Shiro, a cloud that purrs, 2009-2024
In August of 2009, my then-girlfriend and I had been discussing getting a third cat. We had one cat - Maurice - who was an older tabby with a heart condition. And we had a younger tortoiseshell, Ashes, who was kind of rambunctious and kept pestering Maurice. So we thought it might be nice to have another younger cat to keep Ashes occupied and let Maurice have a peaceful retirement.
A friend of my girlfriend heard about someone who found some kittens, and we pretty spontaneously said "sure!". My girlfriend departed from a party we were having at our house with a cat carrier, and returned with this little ball of fluff.
Tumblr media
He was a handful. And so, so so energetic. At the time my girlfriend was playing the video game "Prince of Persia", which lets your character run on vertical surfaces if you're going fast enough.
Shiro would do that.
Now, the original plan pretty much completely failed to pan out: Ashes hated Shiro; she saw him as a replacement for her. Andfor his part Shiro - who was actually sweet to every other cat he met, including on one occasion a bobcat, was hostile to Ashes.
But, that said, they did tolerate each other and Shiro grew into a handsome long-haired cat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With a tail that was bigger than him.
Shiro was, I must emphasize, a "back porch special". But in every respect he was a Turkish Angora. He had the soft, kittenish coat. The smart, curious demeanor. The odd-colored eyes. The love of high places. The friendliness but close bonding with a chosen human. If I didn't know he wasn't a purebred, I'd think he might be.
He was always there to greet me at the door, and he if I sat down, there he would be.
I knew he was getting older, but this all started in mid-October when I noticed him wheezing.
Wheezing is Very Bad for cats.
I took him into to the emergency vet. They found he had fluid in his lung cavity. Their tentative diagnosis was congestive heart failure, which causes fluid buildup in the chest. This gets a lot of cats, and he had dealt with it before: it's what took Maurice. So I didn't panic. This is treatable, and while it's fatal it would be a couple of years down the road. They drained the fluid and sent me off with some drugs and a referral to a cardiologist.
That weekend, he was wheezing again, and just wasn't any more energetic. I went to take him in again, but my usual vet was full and could not take in any more patients with lung issues. I took him to another veterinary hospital, VCA Southpaws. That was, it turns out, a very good call.
They determined he did not have CHF, but rather the fluid buildup was due to a twisted lung lobe (cats have 7 lobes in each lung). It had twisted and was impinging on another lobe. This was terribly rare, and required immediate surgery. Fortunately, we had him insured and once that was approved, we had a very long night waiting to hear the outcome of the surgery.
Aside from being expensive and rare, that was one of the best possible major medical issues: treatable with a single surgery, no ongoing medication, no special concerns in the future.
But.
Because VCA Southpaws is a specialist hospital, and frankly has a higher standard of care than the majority of human hospitals I've visited, I also had them look into an ongoing issue we'd had which our regular vet had brushed off: for the past year Shiro had a massively increased appetite and concurrent weight loss. We were feeding him about 3x as much food as normal and he was only maintaining weight.
Well, the truth is, we never really found out for sure what caused that. But what we did find was lymphoma. That is, cancer.
Now, without going into too many details, there were many junctures in which it might have been one thing which wasn't so bad, or another thing which was very bad. In Shiro's case, at every juncture it was the worse possibility, and it was - as befits a cat who is an incredible statistical rarity in every other respect - the rarest version. As I understand, the body of work for his particular kind of cancer in cats - high grade, non-localized lymphoma with no specific tumors - is basically Shiro. A non-specialist would not even have had the tools to diagnose it. Moreover his presentation was "highly atypical".
Unfortunately, the weirder the cancer, the harder it is to treat. I knew some about cancer, but I learned more. Cancer is all about statistics. And here's a statistic for you: 50% of all feline lymphomas are resistant to treatment. That means you can give them the best care possible, and in about half of cases that will just not mean a thing.
The first chemo protocol didn't help. The second chemo protocol didn't help. We got to the third chemo protocol - a particularly nasty synthetic form of what is known as "The Red Devil" but actually broader and more cytotoxic - but his hematocrit was dropping. He'd been losing weight since October, and having a hard time eating, but at that point his hematocrit was only 14% (a healthy cat's should be in the 30s). We authorized a transfusion, which got it up to 22%, and then he began the third chemo fallback.
Unfortunately, on Tuesday he only ate a very little of his breakfast, and nothing after that. By evening I was deeply worried and we took him back to the hospital. His hematocrit had in five days fallen to 17%. This was incredibly bad; it meant that the cancer had infiltrated his bone marrow and he could not rebuild his blood supply.
At that point we only had bad options.
We could have him given another transfusion and a feeding tube. However, that would only buy him a few days and he would be utterly miserable.
We could take him home, where he would die within a day or so.
We opted to not prolong his misery.
Shiro died in my arms, purring, shortly after 10:30 pm on January 2nd, 2024.
Tumblr media
Goodbye, Shiro. You were a better kitty than I ever dreamed I could have.

https://www.youtube.com/embed/wAtitxi0cEM How Much Are British Shorthair Cats If you're thinking about getting a British Shorthair cat, you'll need to budget $1,270 to $2,605 for their needs per year. This will cover everything from food and litter sand to toys, a cat tree, and annual exams and vaccinations. You will also need to pay for a pet insurance policy, which costs $360 to $600 per year. Cost of a british shorthair kitten The cost of a British Shorthair kitten will depend on many factors, including where you get your pet from and how much the breeder charges. A purebred British Shorthair will be more expensive than a mixed breed, because the breeder has to do more work to produce the kitten. This includes making sure that the kittens meet the breed standard, which is set by the TICA and CFA. If you are looking for a kitten, you should make sure that you get a British Shorthair kitten from a reputable breeder who is registered with the appropriate authorities, which means that their kittens have been tested and registered. Cost of a british shorthair kitten While British Shorthairs are relatively healthy, they are not immune to illnesses, and you should regularly monitor their health. It's always better to prevent than cure, so you should make sure that your cat gets the right amount of exercise and nutritious food. You can also make your own cat toys and treats for your kitten, which can help save you a lot of money. Another factor that determines the price of a British Shorthair kitten is the breeder's reputation. A high-quality breeder will provide kittens with the best physical attributes and temperament possible. Typically, kittens from established breeders are more expensive than kittens from new breeders. The cost of a British Shorthair kitten is not unreasonable, but it may depend on where you purchase your kitten. Registered breeders will charge around PS1200 for a kitten and unregistered breeders will charge between 250 and 700 pounds. You can find reputable breeders in your area by using Google. Cost of a british shorthair cat per month Buying a British Shorthair cat may sound like an expensive endeavor, but if you know how to properly care for them, you can find it affordable. The biggest costs of owning a cat are the medical bills and other expenses. As a result, most people don't have pet insurance, so these costs can be high. Food is another cost associated with owning a cat. Luckily, British Shorthair cats are relatively cheap to feed. This breed of cat is an excellent choice for people who love to spend time with their pets. Its solid build and blue-gray coat are sure to attract a variety of attention. They are also known for being reserved but are affectionate. You should also make sure to neuter your cat and keep up with their vaccinations. A British shorthair's coat requires brushing a couple of times a week. British Shorthairs do not require a special diet, but you should pay attention to their health and keep an eye out for any potential health problems. Most British Shorthairs are healthy and do well on high quality commercial cat food. The average cost of food for one British Shorthair is about $50 a month. British Shorthair cats vary in color, but most are blue-gray. While the blue-gray variety is the standard choice, it is also one of the most rare. For this reason, many cat lovers seek to find a British Shorthair with the same coat color. Prices may vary by region and country, and you should shop around before making a decision. British Shorthair cats are easy to maintain, but they can also develop a variety of chronic illnesses. You should consider a health insurance plan for your pet if you're concerned about unexpected medical costs. A premium for health insurance can range from $20 to $70 a month. Cost of a british shorthair cat's medical checkup If you're interested in purchasing a British Shorthair cat, it's important to understand the costs of medical checkups and vaccinations.
British Shorthairs are a relatively healthy breed, but they need to be monitored regularly to ensure that they're not suffering from medical problems. In addition to regular checkups, you'll also need to pay for vaccine shots and tests. Some tests are expensive, such as those to check for polycystic kidney disease or hip dysplasia. And if you want to register your cat with a feline registry, you'll need to pay for registration fees. These costs are often added to the final price of the cat. Because British shorthairs require frequent dental care and nail trims, you'll need to bring them to the vet regularly. You should also make sure they're spayed or neutered and keep their vaccinations up to date. You'll also want to check their ears for wax and clean out their litter boxes regularly. These cats are very intelligent, and regular visits to the vet can help prevent and cure many illnesses. The cost of a British Shorthair cat's medical checkup varies by breed, but the average annual checkup will cost between $100 and $200. A good breeder will provide the first vaccinations, but it's up to you to continue them. British Shorthair cats are susceptible to kidney disease and heart disease. They're also prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which causes the heart's walls to thicken, decreasing their efficiency. These conditions will need to be diagnosed and treated as early as possible. Cost of a british shorthair's annual exam Annual exams are an important part of your cat's health care. Although British Shorthairs have few breed-specific diseases, they do need to be checked by a veterinarian. In addition to checking for common illnesses, these exams will help identify any problems that may arise. British Shorthairs require annual checkups and vaccinations. These vaccinations may be expensive, but they will help protect your cat from developing costly health problems later on. Generally, a British Shorthair's annual exam will cost between $100 and $200. British Shorthair cats are friendly and easygoing, making them an excellent companion. They easily adapt to their new environment and become attached to their owners. They are also very intelligent and can live in any size house. The breed is typically low-maintenance, so it's an ideal cat for an apartment or a house with a small yard. Annual exams are vital for your cat's health and happiness. They also need regular dental care and eye exams. Your vet will check for problems that may occur and recommend treatment. Your cat may also need a DNA test to determine its ancestry. A DNA test can reveal the exact origin of your British Shorthair. British Shorthairs are naturally healthy but need regular checkups to avoid serious health problems. You should also provide proper nutrition and exercise for your cat. Make sure you keep your British Shorthair out of the reach of children and dangerous objects. In addition to regular exams, you should consider making DIY treats and toys. These are less expensive than store-bought treats and will save you money. Cost of a british shorthair's annual vet visit Although British Shorthairs are not prone to a wide range of health problems, it is still advisable to get your pet checked up every year by a veterinarian. Regular health care will help prevent health issues and increase the lifespan of your pet. Typically, the cost of a British Shorthair's annual vet visit ranges from about $100 to $200. However, there are a few ways to reduce the cost of your cat's annual health visit. Although British Shorthairs Regular dental care is essential for your British Shorthair's overall health. Their flat and short noses make them prone to gingivitis. Dental X-rays may be necessary and, depending on the condition, tooth extraction may be necessary. British Shorthair cats are known for their easygoing, friendly nature and intelligence. These pets have been a popular choice for pets throughout history. They were brought to Britain by the Romans, who smuggled them out of Egypt.
They were used as guard cats for their homes and food. Once the Romans left, the British Shorthair was revived by cat fanciers. Their gentle nature makes them a great choice for apartment living. These cats don't need a lot of attention, but they do appreciate it when it comes. Cost of a British Shorthair's annual vet visit is relatively low. Usually between $1,500 and $2,500. Prices for show cats can go up to $2,200. It is important to note that the price of British Shorthairs varies depending on their quality and age. Adopting one from a shelter or rescue may be more economical than purchasing one from a breeder. Vaccinations, microchipping, and other vet expenses are included in the adoption fee.

All About Cute Breed Bengal Cats

All About Cute Breed Bengal Cats
Back in the 1980's Jean Mill (Millwood Bengals (USA) thought how wonderful it would be to have a domestic size cat with the exotic look and markings of a Leopard! Jean acquired an Asian Leopard Cat (Felis Bengalensis) which is a small,forest-dwelling wild cat that inhabits parts of Asia. Its markings are similar to that of the Leopard. The next step was the mating of the Asian Leopard Cat to the American Shorthair and domestic cat she used these cats to stabilize the timid, shy temperament of the Asian Leopard Cat. After years of frustration and excitement, the Bengal cat as we know it today emerged. Modern Day Bengals The Bengals of today are truly a breed that intrigue and delight almost everyone who comes in contact with them. Their beautiful patterns, colors, and markings along with their inquisitive nature make them a unique breed to own. Colors and Markings Bengals come with varying background coat colors, cream, golden and orange, on these base color's they can have either 'spotting' or the exotic 'marbling' pattern. 'Rosettes' highly sort after as this particular pattern most resembles the markings of the Asian Leopard Cat and the Leopard (see photo on the right) Snow Coloured Bengal's  Bengal's also come in what is called 'snow' coloring and have the same markings and patterns as the traditional 'brown or marbled' Bengal's. The 'snow's' come in three different categories which are as follows:- Seal Lynx Snow Seal Mink Snow Seal Sepia Snow Warpaint litter Bengal Temperament Bengal's are boisterous, energetic and very playful, sometimes a little headstrong and quite often naughty!!! They are very intelligent and can be quite easily taught basic commands. Many walk on a leash and come when called, they love to retrieve paper or balls. They really are more dog like that cat! I am sure they know what you are going to do before you do it! I hope this introduction will encourage you in your final decision into owning one of these wonderful animals. I can almost guarantee you will not regret it!

bengal cats pets Bengal Cats are not wild contrary to many people's opinion. They were bred from the crosses of the Asian Leopard and domestic cats. And, now they are extremely popular since they make good pets and have a beautiful leopard-like coat. The breed is said to be more domestic than wild, yet it has retained some of the habits peculiar for a wild animal such as climbing trees. Nowadays, almost all major organizations recognize the breed and it is eligible for showing. Bengal Cats - Description These are large cats that can reach a size of 15 pounds. Females are usually smaller than males with the average weight being 8-10 pounds. They are robust rather than delicate and have a well-developed muscle structure. The legs should be slightly longer in the back than in the front. The feet are large and rounded. A broadhead that may seem slightly small in proportion to the body characterizes the breed. The muzzle is broad and has prominent whiskers with high cheekbones. Bengal Cats Coat The Bengal cat has a very soft short to medium coat that is slightly longer in kittens. It is thick and luxurious and comes in various color patterns. Some Bengal cats may have a traditionally dark background color with stripes and spots. Others are called snows since the background color is creamy or pale white. It is desirable for Bengal Cats to have glitter.

Those Bengal cats that have at least three to four Bengal-to-Bengal breedings in their background are considered as the best pets. An SBT (stud book tradition) Bengal cat has four or more generations of Bengal-to-Bengal breedings. F1 Bengal cat comes from a breeding of a Bengal cat and the Asian Leopard, so F2 Bengal cats come from Bengal-to-Bengal breeding with one Bengal-to-Asian Leopard Cat breeding, etc. Once, the Bengal cat could be bred to cats with similar color pattern, yet this practice seems to be gradually reduced. Nowadays, most catteries breed Bengals to Bengals and are proud of their pets. The price of a Bengal cat varies from $650 to $800 and can reach as much as $2000. Needless to say, pet quality Bengal cats are comparatively less costly than show quality Bengal cats. Bengal Cat Breeders
Tumblr media
bengal cats pets Of all Bengal Cat Breeders, Jean Mill is definitely the most recognized and famous one, since it was her who created this unique breed, and to who the whole world owes the pleasure of contemplating these sweet little leopard cats. Bengal Cats look very similar to Wild Asian Leopards, as they carry their gene, but they are not wild by nature and are as good with humans as any other domestic cat. Bengal Cats enjoy home life, and they cannot imagine it without interaction with their loved ones. They are very strong and enduring cats and are quick to learn new things and tricks. Bengal Cats enjoy splashing about in water and are famous for the vocal characteristics that single them out from all other domestic cats. Besides their melodic meowing, they can give all sorts of trills, twitters, chirps and so on. They seem to have a much richer vocal language than most other domestic cats, although they are not extremely noisy. Bengal Cat Breeders can tell you all you want to know about the cat’s temperament so that you will see if this is the right cat for you. Many people have a biased attitude toward these cats because of their wild appearance and for fear of aggression. All purebred Bengal Cats of today are completely free from wild behaviors, being even more people-oriented than some most intelligent Oriental cat breeds. Bengal Cats are superb pets, and they never show unmotivated aggression. They enjoy being carried in the arms, and are good with strangers. Show cats are known to withstand over 100 handlings each day without a single growl or bite. If you would like to have a “miniature leopard” in your home but still have doubts about his temperament, it is high time for you to turn to an experienced and qualified Bengal Cat Breeder who will dispel all myths and misconceptions about this wonderful breed. Bengal Cats have a flexible and sturdy body formation. Their coat comes in spotted or marble patterns. There are quite many coat color patterns common to the Bengal Cat, and there are no two identical cats on the planet. However, all Bengal Cats bear a strong resemblance to the Wild Asian Leopard, as this is the reason why they were bred. Bengal Cats are the only felines whose coat has a unique pearl or gold dust sheen and notably soft texture. Bengal Cats are large domestic felines, weighing up to 20 lbs. These cats are capable of expressing their emotions in numerous fashions and can be either rambunctious or peaceful, depending on their mood. Bengal Cat Breeders take great care selling their cats to responsible and trustworthy people, who will not engage in unethical breeding or take to abusive or harsh handling.
Domestic Bengal Cat
The Domestic Bengal Cat is a unique breed of cats, which is not yet recognized by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), but it has a registry with the International Cat Association (TICA). Actually, the Bengal Cat is a hybrid cat that was created by crossing the wild Asian Leopard with a number of domestic breeds with the goat to create a “miniature” leopard with what can be termed as “absolutely domestic temperament”. Indeed, Bengal Cats, though they look definitely wild, are absolutely people oriented and show no more aggression than any other domestic feline. Domestic Bengal Cats possess a characteristic leopard-like appearance and are strongly reminiscent of their wild ancestors. They are sturdy and athletic, with hind-quarters a little higher than the front, and with a characteristic thick striped tail. The coat is spotted or marbled, and there are a number of coat patterns typical of the breed: Seal Marbled Lynx Point, Seal Mink Marbled Tabby, Seal Mink Spotted Tabby, and Seal Spotted Lynx Point, and so forth. The coat is very smooth and feels silky to the touch, and it has a unique pearl or gold dusting glitter. Bengal Cats have dark stripes extending from their eyes and going to the back of the neck. The Domestic Bengal Cat is a very intelligent and communicative feline. He is absolutely free of any unprovoked aggression and will love to keep you company in whatever job you are going to do. Bengal Cats are renowned for their sweet and loving temperament, as they have scores of ways of expressing their emotions. They seem to completely understand human language and can be trained to do a number of tricks. Many Bengal cats learn easily to open doors, turn on and off water taps, switch on and off a light, etc. They are particularly inquisitive about food. The Bengal Cat is one of the few felines that love water. The Bengal Cat is famous for his loud and melodic voice, as well as for a number of other unique, almost bird-like twittering and chirping sounds he can produce. Bengal Cats are not widely spread, and hence they are highly prized. If you feel like having one in possession, you must be ready to pay a large sum of money for a kitten. It is absolutely imperative that you purchase only from a reputable breeder and strictly follow his or her advice on how to properly care for this cat. The Domestic Bengal Cat is a very friendly and affectionate companion, but you must make sure all cats are well socialized and enjoy good care. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({});
Bengal House Cat
Tumblr media
Bengal cats The Bengal House Cat is a great pet, as he is not too demanding in terms of daily care. However, this is quite a rare and expensive breed of cats. The breed originated in the 1970s, by Jean Mill, who strove to develop a unique feline species with the size and temperament of a usual domestic cat and with the appearance of a leopard. In other words, the Bengal cat resulted from the addition of the gene of the Wild Asian Leopard to the domestic cat’s genetic pool. The Bengal cat was accepted as a breed in 1983 by the International Cat Association (TICA). However, the Cat Fanciers Association of the USA rejected the breed as most American organizations tend to be more suspicious about hybrid species. Today, there seem to be few reasons to fear behavioral problems in the Bengal Cats allegedly stemming from the Leopard’s gene, as these cats are more people-oriented and better lap companions than many old and reputed domestic cat breeds. Bengal House Cats of today are not sterile and are bred successfully. First crossings did produce sterile males, but Jean solved this problem by diversifying the animal’s genetic makeup. There are no sterile species in four-generation Bengal Cats. This wonderful breed attracts the attention of cat lovers all over the world by its exotic feline appearance. Their coat features characteristic jaguar-like patterns of rosette-shaped spots on the back and sides. There are distinctive dark lines extending from the eyes and then go backward. Bengal House Cats are large in size, weighing 10-20 lbs; males are larger than females. Bengal Cats come in spotted and marbled colors, which include the following: Seal Spotted Lynx Point and Seal Marbled Lynx Point, Seal Sepia Spotted Tabby and Seal Sepia Marbled Tabby, Seal Mink Spotted Tabby, Brown Spotted Tabby, Brown Marbled Tabby, and Seal Mink Marbled Tabby. Bengal Cats are increasingly popular in various parts of the world. With so many people showing interest in this breed, Bengal breeders and experts have realized the importance of preserving the purity of the cat’s gene pool. For this reason, responsible and reputable breeders tend to scrupulously check potential buyer’s personal qualities and opportunities in order to make sure they can handle them properly and keep them sound and healthy. Every buyer, in turn, must purchase kittens only from reputable breeders, who produce purebred kittens and breed for quality, not quantity. Purchasing from a responsible breeder will guarantee you a happy and funny life with your Bengal House Cat for years to come.
Bengal Cats - Temperament and Habits
Tumblr media
Bengal cats are said to make good pets as they are beautiful and spend much time with their owners. They like to play and often use their claws as hands. Supply them with a toy and see how they will catch and fetch it to you. However, they have retained some of the instincts peculiar for wild cats. They are good tree climbers, so supplying them with a tree is essential. They enjoy the water, which is not peculiar for most felines. Isn't this fact amazing? In fact, they will immediately start playing with water once the owners leave the shower on. Intelligent and playful, they make good companions for children and are generally good with other cats and dogs. Temperament depends much on the background of the Bengal cat. The greater the percentage of Asiatic Leopard blood, the wilder the pet cat is. It is recommended to buy Bengal cats that are removed at least three or four generations from the Asiatic Leopard. Otherwise, they can be hard to manage. Bengal cats make great show cats on the condition that they are well mannered. The standard accepts such behavior as restlessness and anxiety during a show. Yet, Bengal Cats that resist any examination and are unruly during a show should be disqualified. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL44i4o3-gM (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); Follow us on : Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest Read the full article

‘Tiger King’ would have been more disturbing if it had focused on the big cat trade
"Albino" tigers are often just captive individuals bred for specific, atypical features. (Uriel Sobaranes/Unsplash/)
This story originally featured on The Conversation.
Netflix’s new docuseries Tiger King takes viewers into the strange world of big cat collectors. Featuring eccentric characters with names like Joe Exotic and Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, the series touches on polygamy, addiction, and personality cults, while exploring a mysterious disappearance and a murder-for-hire.
To Allison Skidmore, a Ph.D. candidate at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who studies wildlife trafficking, the documentary didn’t bring enough attention to the scourge of captive big cats.
A former park ranger, Skidmore first started studying the issue in the US after the infamous death of Cecil the Lion in Zimbabwe in 2015. She was shocked to learn about how little oversight there was stateside. We asked her about the legality, incentives, and ease of buying and selling tigers.
How many captive tigers are in the US?
Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward answer. The vast majority of captive tigers are crossbred hybrids, so they aren’t identified as members of one of the six tiger subspecies—the Bengal tiger, Amur tiger, South China tiger, Sumatran tiger, Indochinese tiger, and Malayan tiger. Instead, they’re classified as “generic.”
Less than 5 percent—or fewer than 350—of tigers in captivity are managed through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, a nonprofit organization that serves as an accrediting body in the US. They ensure accredited facilities meet higher standards of animal care than required by law.
All the rest are privately owned tigers, meaning they don’t belong to one of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ 236 sponsored institutions. These are considered generic and fall outside of federal oversight.
There’s no legal requirement to register these generic tigers, nor a comprehensive national database to track and monitor them. The best educated guess puts the number of tigers at around 10,000 in the US. Estimates put the global captive tiger population as high as 25,000.
In comparison, there are fewer than 4,000 tigers in the wild—down from 100,000 a century ago.
The new docu-series <Tiger King> gives viewers a glimpse of the poorly regulated exotic-animal trade in the US. (Netflix/)
How do tigers change hands?
The Endangered Species Act and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna prevent the importation of tigers from the wild. So all tigers in the US are born in captivity, with the rare exception of an orphaned wild cub that may end up in a zoo.
Only purebred tigers that are one of the six definitive subspecies are accounted for; these are the tigers you see in places like the Smithsonian National Zoo and generally belong to the Species Survival Plan, a captive breeding program designed to regulate the exchange of specific endangered species between member zoos in order to maintain genetic diversity.
All other tigers are found in zoos, sanctuaries, carnivals, wildlife parks, exhibits, and private homes that aren’t sanctioned by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. They can change hands in any number of ways, from online marketplaces to exotic animal auctions. They can be bought for as little as $800 to $2,000 for a cub and $200 to $500 for an adult, which is less expensive than many purebred dog puppies.
Can I legally buy a tiger?
The US is plagued with complicated and vague laws concerning tiger ownership.
However, there are no federal statutes or regulations that expressly forbid private ownership of tigers. State and local jurisdictions have been given this authority, and some do pass bans or require permits. Thirty-two states have bans or partial bans, and 14 states allow ownership with a simple license or permit. Four states —Alabama, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Nevada—have no form of oversight or regulation at all.
An overarching, cohesive framework of regulations is missing, and even in states that ban private ownership, there are loopholes. For example, in all but three states, owners can apply for what’s called a “federal exhibitor license,” which is remarkably cheap and easy to obtain and circumvents any stricter state or local laws in place.
You now need a permit to transport tigers across state lines, but there’s still no permit required for intra-state travel.
What’s in it for the owners?
Some see it as a business venture, while others claim they care about conservation. I consider the latter reason insincere.
Many facilities promote themselves as wildlife refuges or sanctuaries. These places frame their breeding and exhibition practices as stewardship, as if they’re contributing to an endangered animal’s survival. The reality is that no captive tiger has ever been released into the wild, so it’s not like these facilities can augment wild populations. A true sanctuary or refuge should have a strict no breeding or handling policy, and should have education programs dedicated to promoting conservation.
Bottle-feeding at a ‘pseudo-sanctuary’ in Southern California. (Allison Skidmore/)
Ultimately, tigers are big money makers, especially tiger cubs. The Animal Welfare Act allows cub petting from eight to 12 weeks of age. People pay $100 to $700 to pet, bottle-feed, swim with, or take a photo with a cub.
None of these profits go toward the conservation of wild tigers, and this small window of opportunity for direct public contact means that exhibitors must continually breed tigers to maintain a constant supply of cubs.
The value of cubs declines significantly after 12 weeks. Where do all these surplus tigers go? Unfortunately, due to a lack of regulatory oversight, it’s hard to know.
Since many states don’t account for their live tigers, there’s also no oversight regarding the reporting and disposal of dead tigers. Wildlife criminologists fear that these tigers can easily end up in the black market where their parts can cumulatively be worth up to $70,000. There’s evidence of US captive tigers tied to the domestic black market trade: In 2003, an owner of a tiger “rescue” facility was found to have 90 dead tigers in freezers on his property. And in 2001, an undercover investigation led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service ended up leading to the prosecutions of 16 people for buying, selling and slaughtering 19 tigers.
What role does social media play?
Posing with tigers on social media platforms like Instagram and on dating apps has become a huge problem. Not only can it create a health and safety risk for both the human and tiger, but it also fosters a false narrative.
If you see thousands of photos of people with captive tigers, it masks the true problem of endangered tigers in the wild. Some might wonder whether tigers are really so endangered if they’re so easy to pose with.
The reality of the wild tiger’s plight has become masked behind the pomp and pageantry of social media. This marginalizes meaningful ideas about conservation and the true status of tigers as one of the most endangered big cats.

Figo Earns Our Paw of Approval for the Best Pet Insurance
Since many of us consider our animal companions family, it’s no surprise that more than two million pets in the United States are covered by pet health insurance1. We reviewed and rated pet insurance companies on what matters to pet parents, such as coverage for preexisting conditions, waiting periods, and annual deductibles.
Figo came out as top dog with three levels of insurance coverage that offer comprehensive pet insurance. Figo not only covers vet exam fees for injuries and accidents but also waives your copays for lifesaving treatments. Figo pet insurance plans also don’t exclude hip dysplasia, a common congenital condition for large breed dogs.
We also loved Figo’s cloud-based approach to storing your pet’s medical records and the way it uses the latest technology to coordinate reimbursing claims. All of these perks let pet owners stop worrying about the cost of vet bills and start focusing on helping pets enjoy a better quality of life.

1. Figo: Best for Comprehensive Coverage
Best Comprehensive Coverage
View Website
Figo Pet Insurance has a broad range of pet insurance plans and is one of the only pet insurance companies that offers up to 100% reimbursement based on the vet bill you receive. Figo has three plans, each with a different annual deductible.
No matter which plan you choose, Figo waives the copay in the event your pet needs life-saving treatment. Figo also offers cloud-based, paperless medical records, with automatic reminders for immunizations and streamlined reimbursements. Figo’s pet cloud even has geolocation in case your microchipped furry friend goes missing.
Figo has a relatively short waiting period until coverage kicks in and a wide range of discounts available for service pets, military and veteran animals, and adopted shelter pets. And as long as your dog’s congenital or preexisting condition has been cured for 12 months, they won’t be excluded from coverage.
You’ll also be impressed with Figo’s exceptional customer service and the stellar industry reputation of their underwriter, Markel Specialty.² Figo does have higher priced premiums for basic coverage, a 30-day reimbursement turn around, and no wellness care coverage. But given all the perks your tail-wagger will receive, Figo’s premiums pack exceptional value.
Pros
Choose up to 100% reimbursement
Exam fees covered (higher-tier plans)
No copay for life-saving care
Cloud-based pet healthcare management
Cons
Higher premiums for standard plan
Up to 30 days for reimbursement
No wellness care coverage
2. Trupanion: Best for Dogs
Best for Dogs
View Website
Trupanion boasts a couple advantages that are particularly useful for dog parents. It gets a big paws up for being the only pet insurance company on our list that can directly pay your veterinarian when you submit veterinary bills through their online portal.
This pet insurance company also has a unique deductible that lets you pay a lifetime amount per condition. Once your deductible is met, Trupanion coverage will kick in for the rest of your dog’s life. This can be particularly useful for dog breeds prone to chronic conditions like allergies or hip dysplasia.
Trupanion offers only one plan, but it pays 90% of eligible expenses with no lifetime or annual limits. However, exam fees and preventative care aren’t eligible for reimbursement. And while Trupanion has slightly higher premiums, you’ll save in the long run if you have a young pup or a purebred dog prone to certain conditions that require regular treatment.
Pros
Lifetime deductible per condition
Direct payments to your vet
90% reimbursement
No lifetime or annual limits
Cons
No wellness or preventive care
No coverage for exam fees
Higher premiums
3. Healthy Paws: Best for Cats
Best for Cats
View Website
Healthy Paws keeps it simple for furry friends of both the canine and feline persuasion with one unlimited plan. And Healthy Paws insurance plans do exactly what they state with unlimited lifetime benefits once you meet your annual deductible. Healthy Paws boasts awards as the best-rated cat insurance for the past several years. However, the significant limitations on hip dysplasia make Healthy Paws an unattractive choice for dog owners, especially those with large breeds.
Despite the limitations on common dog conditions, this pet insurance company has a stellar industry reputation and solid customer service ratings.³ Healthy Paws also provides fast claims processing with about a two-day turnaround for most reimbursements. While there is a longer initial waiting period after enrollment compared to other pet insurance providers, we think you’ll find the comprehensive coverage from Healthy Paws worth the wait.
Pros
Unlimited lifetime benefits
Top-rated cat insurance
Great customer service
Fast claims processing
Cons
Poor hip dysplasia coverage
Longer waiting period

If it slithers, flies, or creeps, Nationwide probably has a pet insurance plan to cover it. Nationwide offers plans specifically designed for exotic pets like birds, lizards, snakes, and even potbellied pigs. Nationwide Pet Insurance covers examinations, lab fees, prescriptions, X-rays, and hospitalizations for 23 different kinds of animals, including dogs and cats.
Things to Consider Before You Buy Pet Health Insurance
Age and Breed
The cost of your pet insurance policy is going to depend on a few variables, but the most significant will be the age and breed of your pet. Just like people, older animals are prone to more serious health problems and cost more to insure. Certain dog breeds can also have high incidents of chronic conditions that mean a lifetime of prescription medications and recurring surgeries. Shop around to find the best rate, but be aware that some pets are more expensive to insure than others.
Preexisting and Congenital Conditions
If your dog or cat has a preexisting condition, they can probably still get coverage, but any costs associated with that condition will not be covered by pet insurance. Look for policies that have exceptions for congenital conditions that have been cured for a certain time period and dig into what you’ll have to provide to prove your pet is in good health.
Deductibles and Premiums
As with most pet insurance options, the higher the deductible, the lower your monthly premium and vice versa. Look to strike a balance between a monthly payment you can afford and an annual deductible that won’t break the bank when an accident or illness occurs. Monthly premiums and deductibles can also vary considerably depending on the rate of reimbursement you select.
Wellness and Preventive Care
While it’s not standard in most pet insurance policies, wellness and preventative care is a key factor in controlling costs and keeping your pet healthy. If you’re caring for a young dog or cat you expect to be a lifetime companion, paying a bit more for wellness coverage from an insurance provider may reap dividends through a longer and better quality of life for your pet.
FAQs
Is it worth it to have pet insurance?
When it comes to whether you’ll pay more with or without pet insurance in the long run, the short answer is that it depends. For certain pets, you’ll pay more in monthly premiums than you’ll incur in medical costs and vet bills. Younger, healthier pets tend to be relatively inexpensive to insure and if they end up with chronic conditions later in life, insurance will have been a fabulous investment.
What’s the average cost of pet insurance per month?
Your monthly premium for pet insurance will depend on the kind of coverage you have and other factors like age, breed, and location. On average, you can expect to pay about $40 a month for a standard pet insurance plan for a dog or cat.
Does pet insurance cover preexisting conditions?
No pet insurance plans cover costs associated with preexisting conditions. However, many insurance plans will agree to cover your pet for other health costs and concerns if the congenital condition has been cured for a year or more. If your pet does have a preexisting condition like allergies or hip dysplasia, it pays to shop around.
What’s hip dysplasia?
Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the hip bone doesn’t sit fully within the hip socket, leading it to become dislocated more easily. This is a condition that is common in dogs and is usually a birth defect, specifically in larger dog breeds like mastiffs, retrievers, and St. Bernards.
What is Pet Assure?
Pet Assure is not a pet insurance plan but a discount plan for pet owners who sign up and go to network providers to receive discounted veterinary care. It includes a wide variety of services such as dental cleanings, spay and neutering, and even vaccinations.

6 Reasons Why Your Persian Cat Is So Small
Persian cats are the oldest breed of cats known and rightly called the aristocrats of felines. They are fluffy, big-eyed and gentle and make great pets.
Persian cats are not among the largest breeds but definitely are not small either.
The Persian is a medium-sized cat although the long, thick hair that gives them their distinctive looks makes them look much bigger. In some cases, a Persian does not grow to the normal size and this could be due to malnutrition for various reasons, ill-health or genetics.
It is important to know that a Persian cat’s weight is not an indication of its health. A cat that is smaller than it should be could be so for various reasons and not all of them are related to illness.
A perfectly healthy Persian cat could be smaller than is the standard for the species. Some of these reasons could be
1. It Is The Runt Of The Litter
Like most cats, a Persian cat will average 2 – 5 kittens per litter, and one of them will naturally be much smaller than its siblings.
While chances of survival for the smallest kitten are small, some do manage to pull through. They will always be smaller than normal, even when fully grown.
If a Persian has a large litter, it is possible that all kittens were not provided the required nourishment before birth, and even after birth when mother’s milk is a prized commodity that the larger, healthier kittens are not willing to share.
If you have a cat that has given birth to a runt or are just taking care of one that has been abandoned by its mother or is just too weak to get the nourishment it requires from its mother, take good care of it.
Regular feeding of substitute milk and keeping it warm will give your tiny Persian cat a fighting chance at survival.
2. It Did Not Get Required Nutrients To Grow Well
Even if a kitten is from a small litter (two or three kittens), it is possible that the mother cat was not getting the required nutrition to support the healthy development of the kittens while in the womb.
This lack of nutrition would carry forward to the time these kittens were born and dependent on their mother’s milk.
Not getting adequate nutrients could result in stunted growth, making a Persian cat smaller than it should be throughout its life.
While this is true for stray cats, it is unfortunately also true for those Persians that are not well-looked after by their humans or are simply so fussy about their diet that they do not always eat what is good for them.
3. There Is Something The Matter Inside
If your cat appears healthy on the outside and is eating well, there is a chance something is happening inside that is not letting it grow.
Intestinal parasites are a common problem for cats, and Persians are no exception. If your cat has worms, they could be affecting its ability to absorb much-needed nutrients from the food she eats.
Persians are susceptible to diseases such as congenital hypothyroidism, polycystic kidneys and others which could be keeping your cat unwell enough to not eat and hence affect overall growth.
Persians also suffer from dental problems which could be affecting their diet, which in turn could be affecting their growth.
Have you ever tried eating when you have a cold? How does that go? Now imagine that happening at every meal, every day for your whole life.
This breed of cats has a small nose with pinched nostrils that can affect its sense of smell, which could result in a Persian not eating well.
4. The Diet Is All Wrong
There are many kinds of cat foods available in the market, from canned wet food to pelleted dry food and of course, homemade treats.
The ideal cat food is low in carbs, moderate in fats and high in protein. It is tempting to give cats milk and cream but adult cats are intolerant of lactose in milk and can get an upset tummy if they are given cow’s milk.
However, cats can easily digest yogurt and cheese.
See what food type is suiting your cat and opt for a brand that lists a protein in the first two ingredients, is rich in pro- and pre-biotics, fiber and vitamins, and minerals.
Good cat food should be free of grains and lactose.
Persian cats need a mix of wet and dry food that is especially formulated for kittens and adult cats. Never feed a kitten adult food or vice versa.
The two are not designed to stand in for each other.
5. Your Persian Is A Hybrid
While there are known cases where a purebred Persian cat is smaller than it should be, there are chances that a smaller-than-average Persian is not purebred.
Having a parent or ancestor that is not a pure breed Persian could mix up the genes, so a Persian cat is smaller than the average size.
If you are buying your cat from a well-reputed breeder, they will have its pedigree listed in the registry.
However, if you’re adopting one or buying one that does not come with a registry, there is high probability your cat is a mixed breed and some of the non-Persian genes have dominated when it comes to this cat’s size.
6. Gender Difference
As is the rule in most animal species, the female of a species is smaller than the male. This true for felines as well where female Persian cats will be smaller than their male littermates.
They will be smaller in size and will also weigh less.
If you have a female Persian, its size will definitely be smaller in comparison to a male’s, and it is possible that it is small even for a female.
Related Questions
What is a teacup Persian? Teacup Persians are like regular cats, just tiny even when fully grown. Some are genetically small, but others may be so because of stunting or malnutrition. While adorable, these cats may be the result of bad breeding practices, are very susceptible to diseases and have short lifespans.
Are Persian cats friendly? Persians have the most human-tolerant personality of all cats. They do not mind sitting in a lap and being stroked. They are good with families and do not mind well-behaved children. However, they do need a “quiet spot” for when they want to be on their own.

Best Dog Breeds for Families: A Best Friend For All
Looking to add a new member to the family by adopting a new dog? When choosing a new puppy or dog for adoptions, consider the best dog breeds for families based on size, temperament and lifestyle. You might be surprised to what little (or big) furball is your next most amazing best friend.
Best Dog Breeds for Kids
Kids and dogs don’t always get along. The reason is simple, neither respect boundaries at times. If you have kids, especially younger once who haven’t spent a lot of time around dogs, choose the right breed with a good temperament known for being around energetic kids.
The American Kennel Club recommends considering your home’s physical interior and exterior environment when considering any of the breeds considered great with kids. Your new best friend needs to be a good fit from all sides.
Golden Retriever
Who doesn’t want their own Air Bud? Golden retrievers are loyal, smart, confident and loyal. They are particularly patient with children and seem to relish the extra attention and energy kids bring to the relationship.
Labrador Retriever
Whether it is fetch or frolicking in the ocean waves, Labrador retrievers are great family dogs. Not only are they extremely playful dogs, but they are also protective of the little beta and omega members of the family (aka the kiddos), keeping them safe from all sorts of trouble.
Beagle
Maybe best idolized in the Peanuts cartoon series for decades, kids around the world love Snoopy. The Beagle is a small dog that won’t overwhelm kids. He is patient and calm. For kids who love to be outside, the hound in this dog make him the perfect exploration companion thanks to his keen hunting dog’s heritage.
Collies
Lassie was always there to save the day. But as Babe the Pig learned, Lassie’s cousin, the Border Collie is smart, loyal and playful. Collie breeds in general are smart and easy learners. These medium-sized dogs love showing off new tricks with their kid playmates whenever possible.
Newfoundland
These dogs are great water dogs and considered one of the smartest breeds out there. Many dog experts call the Newfoundland “Nature’s Babysitter” because the big lovable beast doesn’t mind being a pillow and a playmate.
Even though we have highlighted some great breeds made famous in film, television and print, not every breed on television is a good example of a family dog for kids. After 101 Dalmatians was first released, families across American bought Dalmatian puppies only to flood shelters a year later when the high-strung dog either nipped at children or created disarray in homes where they couldn’t be the center of attention. Not every dog is a great companion for children.
Best Dog Breed for New Couples
New couples often adopt a purebred dog before they create a kid. It’s a good way to see how well you parent together. Finding a perfect family companion at a local shelter is a great way to build a family and help a dog in need. Many mixed breeds found at shelters are perfect for new couples.
At the same time, pure breeds are often a gift in a relationship, representing things are getting serious. It doesn’t matter if you choose smaller or larger dogs. Find one that fits your home meeting the needs of apartment living, patio dining or camping trips.
Basset Hound
https://ift.tt/2QnJgpw
If you want someone to take the karaoke mic on Friday nights, the Basset Hound your dog. He’ll howl with you and all your friends because he loves everyone including strangers. This hunting dog breed seems to have endless tail wags unless he catches the scent of something to hunt. These dogs need moderate exercise but are flexible with how. Meaning they are happy with the walk down to the local café patio for an afternoon of people watching.
Boston Terriers
https://ift.tt/2RSd0HA
This breed is a big dog in a little dog’s body. They proudly stand as if they are lions but remain as gentle as just about any breed out there. The short snout makes the Boston Terrier less suitable for places that get extremely hot because they can easily overheat, but these dogs do well in apartments, accept new family members such as newborns or other dogs with ease, and don’t have a lot of separation anxiety.
English Bulldog
A great family animal where there are other dogs, cats and even when kids get introduced. English Bulldogs are gentle protectors that don’t need a lot of space. They do well in temperate climates and become the subject of many social media videos with their snoring while chilling on movie night.
German Shepherd
A great protector because this dog was bred to protect the sheep and goat herds. German Shepherds are outgoing dogs who love to play, are courageous and curious. Many shepherd owners claim their dog is very aloof to strangers much like a lone wolf. These are working dogs that do best with routine and tasks to keep their mind active. German Shepherds do have a tendency to develop hip dysplasia from breeding practices.
Great Dane
Not quite a lap dog, but he might think he is. Hitting the scales at around 120 pounds, these dogs are big but as gentle as they come. Great Danes are stubborn and wary of other dogs on walks they don’t know. Training is essential though they do well with other animals in the home.
Best Dog Breeds for Elderly
Considering dogs for families should consider breeds for a family, regardless of the age. Elderly couples gain a lot of companionship spending time with a dog in the house. Studies have shown elderly people stay healthier with dogs partly because dogs reduce stress, force elderly people to remain active and provide security.
An elderly couple who has grandchildren visiting frequently needs to consider not just a dog that is good for them but is tolerant of the spitballs of energy that come to see them on the weekends. Elderly dog owners should consider smaller dog breeds simply for the safety factor of handling the strength and energy of a dog.
Poodle
Standard poodles are adventurous and require some yard space to investigate and play otherwise they’ll find themselves in the laundry basket. The miniature poodle is known to get particularly attached to one person, making them the ideal lap dog companion. This breed needs scheduled grooming but doesn’t shed much and is low-maintenance between grooming visits.
Corgi
A little waddle encourages a lot of walking. The Queen’s choice: Corgi’s are fun dogs who learn tricks before you even teach them. These are very stubborn dogs because they are so bright. But with a little training, they become loyal and fun companions. They do as much to encourage play as they do cuddling together with cozy nights by the fireplace.
Maltese
Small, loves to cuddle and doesn’t shed. What isn’t there to love about the eyes poking through that long hair around the crest of the Maltese’s head? These are friendly dogs who love just about everyone and are perfect for grandma when home by herself. Then they jump right in when the grandkids want to play.
  Pug
What better dog to understand our aging bodies than the pug. Heck, a few extra wrinkles make this eating and sleeping machine even more adorable. If any dog is a couch potato, the pug certainly is. Avoid giving those silly big eyes table scraps and provide encourage a little bit of play to keep their weight down.
Best Dog Breeds for Active Lifestyles
Families of all sizes, whether with kids or without, who live an active lifestyle don’t want to leave their dog behind. If you love hiking, hanging out at the lake or horseback riding on trails, you’ll want a breed that loves being outside as much as you do.
While many dog breeds are bred for outdoor activities, owners need to be the fun warden. Dogs will push themselves without care for their own health. Extreme weather (both hot and cold), extended activities without rest or not paying attention to the subtle differences of an aging dog can lead to disaster.
Here are some great breed to take with your family on those outdoor treks.
Irish Setter
Amazing athletes who love to play fetch. If your kids are playing at the park, the Irish Setter is just as happy retrieving tennis balls for the afternoon. Their stature makes them great jogging partners and their gorgeous coat keeps them cozy in snowy conditions.
Cocker Spaniel
This is a game dog who might proudly bring you a few birds as gifts. They are great in apartments or houses but do need time to cut loose and run so make sure you set time for them to play. These are easy going dogs who do well on trails, camping or hunting.
Bull Terrier
Spud MacKenzie put the Bull Terrier in the spotlight with his her (portrayed as him) starring roles in Bud Light beer commercials in the late 1980s. This breed knows his role is to be the life of the party, seemingly playing jokes on his family. These are loyal dogs with a ton of brute strength so provide outdoor time where they can explore and release that energy positively.
Weimaraner
A gorgeous dog bound to make friends for the whole family with his hazel eyes and silvery coat. Another sports dog great with the family but need both mental and physical stimulation to exhaust that immense curiosity he is born with. The Weimaraner is fast enough to keep up with you on a mild mountain bike trek and make even sprint for the win at the end (and beat you).
Boxer
Known for their jumping ability, Boxers need a good yard with excellent containment if you don’t want to be chasing him throughout the neighborhood. These dogs are strong just love to be the life of the party. They’ll make you feel safer on a camping trip with their protective nature and keen hearing.
Whatever type of dog you choose for your family, be sure to spend the time and energy to train the dog and your family. Consistency among family members including kids helps dogs understand their place in the pack. This helps reduce dominant and even aggressive behavior.
Always teach young children how to treat dogs and what signs a dog will show when he is stressed, upset or angry. It is always the owner’s responsibility to make sure everyone is safe, including the dog.

The life span of a Bengal cat varies. The lifespan depends on several factors including the cat's diet, activity level and genetics. It also depends on the breed and the environment. However, this is a question that should not be ignored if you want your pet to live for a long time. This article covers the main factors that influence the life span of Bengal cats. Weigh these factors to find out if your Bengal is a good candidate for a long life. The average lifespan of a Bengal cat is 12-20 years. While most Bangladeshis live to be 10 years old, many Bangladeshis live an average of 15 years and very few live beyond the age of 20. Genetics A Bengal cat is a domestic cat with unique genetics. Its coat and eye colour are governed by several genes. The most common one is the "B" allele, which is the dominant allele. However, there are other, recessive alleles as well. Some Bengals are completely black, while others are cinnamon or fawn. In addition, a cat can have a recessive allele for blue eyes. The coat colours and patterns in domestic cats are highly variable. They are determined by several genes with Mendelian inheritance. A 2-bp deletion in the agouti signalling protein (ASIP) gene is associated with melanism in domestic cats. The complete coding region for ASIP has been sequenced in Asian leopard cats and domestic cats. A total of 27 variants have been found. The sequenced ASIP gene in the Bengal cat reveals that there are two different alleles in the Bengal cat. The genetics of a Bengal cat are not well understood. The original breed standard for Bengal cats was based on an F-1 hybrid, which is the first cat born from a mated F-1 cat. The first cross usually produces a cat with hardy, vigorous, and energetic traits. Nevertheless, there is one thing that has remained consistent throughout the years: the Bengal cat has a fertility problem in the first few generations. As with any feline, each gene controls a specific trait. The white cat, for example, has two white alleles. One of these alleles is dominant and the other is recessive. In addition, there are four different karyotypes for the white and non-white cat. In addition, the two rex genes interact with each other to produce the white and non-white coat type. Activity level If you want a long-lived and healthy Bengal cat, you should know that they require a large amount of space and an owner who is prepared to tolerate their high activity level. These cats are lovable and charming creatures, and they will thrive in your home if you can give them the proper care. While this type of cat is expensive, it is well worth the investment if you can spend some time with it and engage in playtime. Bengal cats are so active Another factor that affects the activity level of Bengal cats is their genetic makeup. Some cats are more active than others, and Bengals have a genetic makeup that makes them highly active. Purebred cats are usually less active and more prone to various diseases, and can have an extremely low life expectancy. However, because Bengals are a mix of domestic cats and Asian Leopard cats, their genetic makeup is highly diverse and can make them healthier and longer-lived. The reason that Bengal cats are so active is that they are used to a high-protein diet based on small prey. They are extremely affectionate and enjoy playing with their owners. If you have an active Bengal cat, you will need a large space for playtime. Bengal cats can even be trained to perform simple tricks, like walking on a harness. While this can be difficult, it can be rewarding to watch them perform the same tricks over again. The average lifespan of a Bengal cat is between 12 and 16 years. Although their energy level will decrease as they age, they still have a mind and are prone to medical issues. Regular check-ups are an absolute must. And you will want to make sure that your cat receives up-to-date vaccinations, as well. Having up-to-date vaccinations and routine vet visits will help keep your Bengal healthy and happy.
Diet It is not uncommon for a Bengal cat to live up to 20 years if it is properly cared for. While Bengal cats are known to be hardy creatures, they are still susceptible to certain health issues. Listed below are some common illnesses and symptoms that may require medical attention. Despite the complexities of Bengal cat health, there are a few things you can do to increase your Bengal cat's lifespan. It's important to note that Bengal cats are obligate carnivores. Their bodies have evolved to digest meat, so the majority of their diet should consist entirely of meat. As such, it is important to avoid commercial cat food products with lots of carb sources. In addition, avoiding chocolate, coffee, and other dairy products may make your Bengal cat less likely to become ill. In addition, chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic for cats and can even lead to death. Avocados contain persin, which is also toxic for Bengal cats. In addition to chocolate, alcohol can cause liver damage and brain damage in cats, so avoid it as much as possible. As a breed with high energy levels and an excellent IQ, Bengals need a lot of attention. You'll never find them content with their toys, and they will get bored quickly. These cats are notorious for stealing items, destroying expensive items, and staring at other animals for giggles. Therefore, you should always supervise your Bengal when around small animals and other pets. It's also advisable to schedule regular wellness examinations with your vet, so that you can take preventive measures early enough to save your Bengal's life. Behavioral problems Bengal cats have a high level of activity and can be prone to behavioral issues. Some cats may attempt to climb up sinks and counter tops for various reasons. The sound of running water might attract them, or they may want to smell something delicious on your counter tops. Regardless of the reason, you can help your cat solve this behavior problem by providing it with the proper environment and proper care. If the above behaviors persist, you may want to consider a different breed of cat. In some cases, Bengal cats become aggressive and destructive, and they can damage furniture, the house, and other items. When a Bengal cat feels ignored, they will let their feelings be known through meowing and other behaviors. It's their nature to scratch furniture, and if you don't provide enough opportunities for them to scratch, they will be unhappy. If you punish your Bengal for being a Bengal, you'll only confuse them. Some of these behaviors are caused by the cat's genetic makeup. For example, Bengal cats have a propensity to chase things off tables and cabinets. They'll even chase anything that smells good. If you don't keep your Bengal indoors, they may bite you. To minimize this problem, you should ensure that your Bengal wears a tag collar with contact information. By introducing these behavioral solutions early, you can reduce your cat's aggression and ensure its well-being. Besides fighting with other pets, cats may exhibit aggressive behaviors when they feel pain or fear. Chronic medical trauma can also manifest in aggressive behavior. Make sure you're constantly monitoring your Bengal to avoid these triggers. Ideally, they should be left alone for the majority of the day. Behavioral problems in Bengal cats may be difficult to detect, but they can easily be treated if identified and treated in the right way. And if you see any signs of aggressive behavior, consider getting a different Bengal. Exercise The life expectancy of a Bengal cat is usually between twelve and twenty years. While they do not live much longer than that, a few Bengal cats do survive into their teens. In addition to their long life span, Bengals are incredibly energetic and require plenty of exercise. Exercising your Bengal cat is an important way to improve its health and well-being. These energetic cats do not tolerate sleeping or lack of exercise well.
Bengal cat is usually between twelve Whether it's a daily walk or a vigorous play session, exercise helps to alleviate stress. Regular exercise and a healthy diet go hand-in-hand. A Bengal cat needs at least 15 minutes of exercise two to three times a day. Exercising regularly helps keep the Bengal cat's energy levels down and reduces health problems related to sedentary lifestyle and diet. In addition to proper diet, Bengal cats need essential vitamins and minerals. These nutrients are found in lean meat and fish, so a Bengal cat's diet should be primarily made up of animal protein. Avoid grains, cereals, and sugars, which can lead to digestive issues and weight gain. Also, limit carbohydrates to about 3% of the Bengal cat's diet. Instead of simple carbohydrates, give your cat a diet rich in fibre, which is better for the Bengal's digestive system. Exercising your Bengal cat can help it live longer and avoid many of the health problems that can afflict outdoor cats. A Bengal cat that has regular physical activity can expect to live up to twenty years. It is important to exercise your Bengal on a regular basis, as well as avoid letting them run free in the yard. By doing so, they'll be healthier and more likely to stay happy and healthy.

10 Dog Breeds That Make Wonderful Companions For Seniors
Not only do senior citizens tend to have more time and attention to devote to the care of their pets; those who own a dog have been shown to have lower blood pressure, increased social interactions and healthier exercise habits.
Several lifestyle factors should be considered before choosing a dog. Take into account your activity level, living situation and the amount of care you are able to provide.
The following 10 breeds are excellent choices for seniors, but they certainly aren’t the only ones! Whether you choose a puppy or an adult; a purebred or a mutt; what matters most is that your personalities and lifestyles are in sync and that there is plenty of love between you!
1. Poodle
Poodles are highly intelligent and fiercely devoted to their families. They are known to excel at agility competitions, but they also shine in more mellow roles as service or therapy dogs. Another benefit to the Poodle is that they come in 3 distinct sizes from Toy to Standard to suit any lifestyle.
2. Maltese
Don’t let the Maltese’s playful nature and energetic spirit fool you. These dogs love nothing more than to be the cherished lapdog of their favorite human. They were extremely popular among royalty and the wealthy elite in 20th century Europe. Happy to go for a rejuvenating walk or simply bask in your adoration, the Maltese is a diverse and loving companion.
3. Shih Tzu
These fluffy cuties aren’t so small as to get under your feet, nor are they too big to pick up and snuggle! Shih Tzus are the full package for seniors. They love to lift your spirits with their playful, clownish antics, but they are also content to curl up with you while you read or watch TV. Shih Tzus live to make their humans happy and tend to be highly trainable.
4. Yorkshire Terrier
These pint-sized pocket pups would rarely ever touch the ground if they had their way. They love to be carried and often climb onto their owners’ shoulders in order to be as close to them as possible. Despite their endless affection, don’t forget that Yorkies are still terriers, and have the capacity for high energy and lots of barking. The plus side is, no one will ever sneak up on you with a Yorkie around!
5. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
If you are searching for a gentle, lovable lap-warmer, you came to the right place! Cavvies are friendly, trainable, great with children and highly adaptable. They can be just as content in a one room apartment as they would be in a mansion. All they ask is that their favorite humans are close by their side.
6. Japanese Chin
Although Chins enjoy a nice walk and a daily play session, they are considered to be one of the canine breeds that require the least amount of exercise. Their little worlds revolve around their humans and they will faithfully trot behind you wherever you may roam. Chins are also excellent cuddlers, but watch out for the snoring from those little squishy noses!
7. Lhasa Apso
Lhasas love to protect their humans and they take their watchdog job very seriously. Most of the time they will snuggle up and relax with you, but should a visitor come to the door, your Lhasa will certainly let you know! Despite their unwavering devotion to their main human, they may get a little snippy with kids and guests if not trained properly early on.
8. Pekingese
Described as stubborn, independent, aloof and dignified, these regal pups can be hard to win over. However, they are fiercely loyal and devoted to those humans they deem worthy. Most owners describe them as “one person dogs” meaning they give their whole heart to one special person, then spend the rest of their lives adoring only them!
9. Pomeranian
Poms are often mistaken for stuffed animals, and if you know one, you understand why! As much as they love scampering about with a toy, they also adore perching in your arms and watching the world go by. These devoted little watch dogs also make it a point to “protect” you from squirrels, mailmen and neighborhood cats.
10. Bolognese
Bolos live to please their humans and will adjust their lifestyle in order to suit yours. They are known to be calm, quiet, affectionate and cuddly. Although still rare in the US, they are rapidly growing in popularity thanks to their cuteness, gentle nature and remarkable personalities.
