“Mmm.” Lane agreed from the other side of the room. She was carefully taping together a stack of CDs: When the Pawn… and Sgt Pepper’s as bookends. Rory’s bedroom was an explosion of nearly-nineteen years of novels and diaries and cups. Lots and lots of cups.

“I hate packing.” She proclaimed, frowning at a stack of paperbacks, twisting them this way and that, inspecting her jewels. Lunch Poems and The Outsiders and Anne of Green Gables. She tossed them in the case.

“I also hate –” kicking a pair of leather boots out the way, ones that zipped all the way up to her calves. Keep. “ – choosing. Like, what stuff to leave behind. I can’t Lane, I can’t do it!” Rory clutched a stuffed rabbit to her chest. The eye was falling out. 

“Well,” Lane gently pressed the stack of CDs into the bedsheets. They were a dazzling array of untucked corners and bright blue paisley. “That’s why I’m here. To be your ruthless right-hand man.”

Rory hummed, riffling through fourteenth-birthday cards in her desk drawer. “For instance.” Lane cleared her throat. “Do you really want to bring your I love pesto pasta from the annual Stars Hollow pasta eating contest that was cancelled five years ago?” She fingered the sleeve, the bright green stain. Rory snatched it. 

“Duh!” She brought it to her nose. “Mmm, still smells like 1998 and pesto and winning.”

Lane scoffed. “Okay, fine. How about your broken little miss piggy bank? Your half-depleted out-of-date lip smackers set? My grey guitar sweater?”

I've been writing quite a lot but it's mostly notes for my COBB, a few lines of dialogue here and there but not much actual fic yet. But-but-but, I finally got a little scene going on my subway commute on Monday! AND IT'S AGATHA POV! I struggle with getting into Agatha's POV, and she's looking like she'll have a big role in this fic, which I'm excited about. (I love her.)

I can feel that something is wrong as soon as she opens the door. Minty is perfectly poised, as always. Not a hair out of place. Matching hot-pink velour tracksuit top and bottoms, a new set I’ve never seen before. “Hi, Agatha.” She sounds normal. We hug. I hand her the crisps I’ve brought, and we go into the den. We watch an entire episode of Skins without speaking. “Is everything okay?” I finally ask in the lull between episodes. “Sure, Agatha. Why wouldn’t it be?” “I don’t know…” “I actually have to get ready for dinner with Samantha after this episode.” “I thought we were hanging out.” “We are hanging out.” She looks at me like I’m crazy. (I’m starting to feel like I might be.) “Since when do you double-book on nights we have plans to hang out?” “I already had those plans before you called, Agatha.” (I hate how she keeps calling me Agatha. Usually it’s Aggie, or Ags, or even Taggy – and I hate that one, but right now, I’d be grateful to hear it.) “Well, then why not another day?” “I have plans for every day of break already.” “How is that possible?” “I have other friends, Agatha! hello Anon! First of all, thanks so much for sending this ask. I always love reading other people's posts about their process so this was a really interesting one for me to think about. And I'd be delighted to share, though I can't promise it'll be anything profound!

I'm the opposite of a linear narrative planner type tbh. Whenever I try that approach, it always feels really flat and uninspired. I have a WIP at the moment that came to me in quite a plotty, formal way—it's a fic where there's an emergency at Hogwarts and Albus and Scorpius go missing, and Harry and Draco go there together and have to get their sons back (and fight the Giant Squid). I had an overarching idea, and a flashback/flashforward format with all the scenes I needed. But when I went to write it, it dragged and dragged. I hope to go back to it but I think it really needs to be shaken up!

Normally however, every fic I write begins with an idea for one particular moment or scene. It's almost like a camera flash, like an illumination, a moment of clarity where I can just grasp the mood of this tiny snapshot within the narrative. So everything I write becomes about getting to that moment and capturing the feel of it as truly as I can. It's hard because sometimes, as I write, there's a slippage between what I have in my head and what comes out on paper. My best fics (in my opinion) are the ones where the finished piece matches up with the vision/feel I had in my head.

So in Modern Love, that scene was the kiss in the church. Which, if you've read the fic you'll know, comes almost at the very end. So i basically wrote 60k to get to that: "Draco presses into him, and Harry can feel the answering press of the altar rail behind his thighs, and Draco bends him backwards so his body is a tightly-strung bow, and Draco is leaning over him, holding him up, and they’re still kissing, kissing, kissing."

In Unpin, it was the scene where Harry and Draco are getting into their uniforms in the changing room, and Draco can hear Harry unbuttoning his robes: "The buttons are tiny, impossibly delicate-looking, but he tells me they’re virtually indestructible. I can actually hear the whisper of the buttons as he nudges them shut, that gentle sussurating scratch of the edge of each one as he eases them through the buttonholes.'The kirin horn has protective properties, Malfoy,' he told me smugly when he bought them. 'And,' he added, like the sanctimonious prick he is, 'they look great.'"

In Power Lines, it was the scene with Draco floating in the sea: "They swam every afternoon, Harry mostly floating, blinking up at the flat blue sky, Malfoy with his shoulders pink and peeling and his wet hair bleached like bone from the sun. His Mark had faded over the years, though it was still ugly, and he had a ropey, reddened scar curling around the bracket of his left ribcage right up to the hollow below his Adam’s apple. Harry determinedly didn’t think about how odd it was that he suddenly knew Malfoy’s body like this, so casually and easily."

In Lick, it was Harry with his hand on the Hogwarts wall, talking to the building (and that scene comes right at the start, so in a way that was easier because I had the whole fic to play with afterwards!): "As he touches the wood, leans his forehead against the wall, he whispers under his breath, "Please." And as easily as that, at just one word from him, there's a click—the shockingly mundane sound of a lock turning."

In Our Little Life, it was Draco in a toga: "Harry’s fingers went to the fibula at Malfoy’s shoulder, but Malfoy murmured something about how he should leave it unless he was prepared to redrape it, and anyway Harry found he could get at almost all of Malfoy’s skin by going in from the hem up, and when the dream started to fade, Harry woke with the memory of Malfoy’s ribcage shuddering beneath his fingers."

In Howl, it was an almost jokey recreation of the rain scene in the newer Pride and Prejudice film: "“It worked out okay in the end,” Harry said, voice rough under the patter of the rain that had crept up on them, moving in sheets across the wide bowl of the valley below, wrinkling the surface of the lake. “You’re here, aren’t you? You came to get me.”"

In Countdown to a Life it was Harry thinking he'd enjoy being tied up and realising he didn't like it: ""I think," Harry says, so much later that Draco thought he was already asleep. "I think I'd prefer if it was just you. Keeping me still, I mean. I'd be so good for you. I wouldn't move at all, if you told me not to.""

in Take the Moon, it was Harry bringing Scorpius to the supermarket in the middle of the night and seeing his own reflection in the freezer doors: "Sometimes Harry could hardly see how three years had passed, could barely remember a time before Scorpius, definitely couldn’t count how many nights he had spent here in this particular Sainsbury’s, first with Scorpius in the sling, then as he got bigger, the trolley seat, walking up and down the aisles under the artificial lights that made it feel as though it could be any time of the day or night, Harry’s own warped reflection flickering back at him from the foggy glass doors of the freezer cabinets, rows and rows of chilly ghosts."

You get the idea! This is just a selection from random fics, I could probably go through every single fic and pinpoint that moment/scene that prompted me to start writing. Some are more successful than others in the way they turn out, of course—and I do think it's one of the reasons I think my microfics/oneshots are my best writing. It's because they usually are the essence of that one scene, distilled! So I can really indulge that purity of vision.

I'm not inspired by media like films/songs/books at all really, though I do greedily consume a lot of those (books in particular) and of course every single thing I read/watch has an impact in some way. I definitely write better when I've been reading really good books. This year, reading things like The Bee Sting or Close to Home or Open Water... they all really inspired me to think about craft and style and tone in a very considered way.

And on a final note, I've been writing a lot of original work this year and i've learned that I find it even harder to capture the feel of that one moment when I'm also trying to juggle characterisation and plot!

Hii, usually I am very shy showing this particular piece but, I kinda need some help regarding my wip designs of Lucio's parents:

So this guy here is Dakila, aka Lucio's dad, Dakila means "great or large" it could also mean noble. At first I am lowkey nervous I was unintentionally gonna end up making him look like a fusion of freckle and Nico.. Thank goodness it didn't?.. Obviously it's not fully colored yet, the orange parts are the markings.

He's based on a visayan leopard cat. (Or maral cat for short.):

Questions:

1. Now I do needed some advice or help whether I should simplify Dakila's markings. (Since I can imagine he be difficult to animate, that's just what I think.)

2. I have Lucio's Mother concept design, her name is Amelita. She's a Filipino domestic shorthair.. So could you suggest a breed for her please? If you can.

However I may or want to have her breed mix, since I made Lucio having a darker brownish beige color. Amelita's fur color is supposed to be warm brown, Dakila on the other hand has like an dark orangish color fur, with shades of brown.

So I am like in a crisis and my mind is debat4ibg whether or not I should just make Amelita a grey cat instead- Or brownish gray..

3. Another problem for me is Lucio's eye on my design is a Cooper yellow, while Dakila eyes are either dark brown or black. (Maybe it's just the bug pupils.) And I haven't decided what color Amelita would have. And I pretty much attached to Lucio having yellowish eyes so whoops..

Okay here's young Lucio btw: Its not 100 finalize but this what I think he'll look like when hes young.

Anyways, I have a lot to discuss here so let's start!

First off, I love your ocs as I started analyzing each of their designs. Ngl I also have a crisis when I drew the parents of my OC Amber especially her mother lmao. And yes, character designing can be frustrating too huhu (⁠〒⁠﹏⁠〒⁠)

I am not good at explaining stuff or giving advice, but I will try anyway because yes. of course. absolutely. why not?

Answers:

1. Since you have your reference for Lucio's father, I suggest you keep it simple. You can keep the dark brown streaks on his face to accentuate his features and to makes his design more unique. It also gives him the fierce look of a wild cat too. (Don't worry I don't see the fusion there ✧⁠*◍。)

2. I can't think of any cat breeds for Amelita, except a leopard cat, since there is not much wild cats in the Philippines huhu. Like when I researched it, there are like two wild cat breeds only native in Philippines.

Amelita as a Puspin is also fine too, since you can experiment her color patterns (more like a cheat code lmao). In fact, there is no specific color for Puspin as their color patterns are diverse (I mean EVERY COAT PATTERN EXISTS! ✧⁠\⁠(⁠>⁠o⁠<⁠)⁠ﾉ⁠✧) so there is not much of an issue if you play around on her design until you feel content. Amber's mom is a Puspin too with a tortoiseshell coat (black and orange fur).

I like the idea of Lucio got the genes from Amelita, as her genes are dominant while Dakila is a recessive one. I also like her to be brownish gray as it suits her more than the brown. It would be a nice detail that fits to their offspring.

(It's like genetics but it hurts our creativity AAAHHHH ༼⁠;⁠´⁠༎ຶ⁠ ⁠۝ ⁠༎ຶ⁠༽)

3. I love the concepts you made for the family. The breeds were mixed up, which it made sense since there are streaks from Dakila and the coat color from Amelita.

Also make Amelita's eyes warm yellow, since she would have a brownish gray fur just to contrast the hues and darkness. (It's up to you if you want to change her design)

oooooh okay! generally i dislike any hard absolutes like "don't use adverbs ever" because i mean. no piece of advice like that will ever be universal and it's important to consider what Your Piece of writing needs rather than trying to fit a set of ~arbitrary guidelines~

as for advice i think works, i think consistency in writing will always be key to improvement. i like. very heavily stagnated in actual writing after covid (i was like. good lord i was 15 then. wild) because i got bogged down trying to make my book Perfect. and i think if i had actually written more during that time i would be a much better writer now! more writing = more improvement and practice makes pretty damn close to perfect etc etc

2. you can have dinner with any author, living or dead. but the catch is that after the dinner, you and that author will team up against a third writer in a no holds barred cage match throwdown. which 2 authors do you pick?

OOOOH ok. i'm currently very enamored with andrew joseph white and lee mandelo's writing because they both write GORGEOUS prose so maybe one of them? OOO or r.f. kuang . i think tolstoy should get got in the cage match. cry old man

3. have you ever experimented with poetry, plays, or screenwriting? what was the result?

Hello!!!

First of all, my bad for being radio silent for so long. I’ve been posting progress updates on my Twitter, but now I’m realizing that mayhaps doing that on a private account is not the move 💀 I might need to cross post that here lol

Anyhow, I’m honestly not sure???? I’m really aiming to get it out in the next week or two, ideally before Ramadan ends because I have a couple of friends that are fasting rn and I’d like them to have a new chapter to come back from. Also because I updated last before Ramadan started and it would be pretty embarrassing for an entire monthlong holy period to go by without me being able to update my damn fan fiction once LMAO

Currently, Chapter Three is at about 12k words. I didn’t mean for it to get so long, but then interactions happened and Mika got screen time, and Lewis and Nico appeared and then Nico wanted a turn at being a POV character and it’s still like six thirty in the morning on the day after Chapter Two takes place. I think if I’m going to get it out in any sort of a reasonable timeframe, I’m going to have to up the chapter count, which I didn’t want to do, but the more I look at the document the more I realize this is the only way I can avoid putting out like a 50k word chapter.

Hopefully the back half of this chapter should be faster, though. There were a couple sections I found tough to write, and I decided to deal with the resultant writers block like a total dumbass (starting another WIP that’s now at 11k words, but that I don’t know if I want to post until the first fic in the free use verse is done). Luckily I have great friends who help me through writers block and also some painkillers because I accidentally bodied my thumbnail a little while ago which send my typing speed to the shadow realm.

Anyways, my bad for the long response as well 🤠 thank you for reading and enjoying the fic, and for reaching out!! Hopefully the update should be out in a week or two, but maybe less if I go sicko mode.

Hello! Thanks so much for your kind words! I’m so happy you’re liking the fic so far.

This is a super fun ask. Not sure how coherent or helpful my response will be, but I’ll give it a try. 😆

So, stories like Purgatory, Fuel the Pyre or my WIP dark magic AU, always start out as a bunch of questions.

What if Ezran hadn’t interrupted Callum and Rayla in Viren’s study…

Could a human/elf halfling do primal magic? Can all of them or just a few? What would control that?

What would the world be like if dark magic actually was controlled and regulated.

I usually don’t start out planning a fic when I ponder questions like this, it’s usually just my mind wandering. For me, while I love big, wonderful, imaginative worlds (like the world of The Dragon Prince) what I’m really more interested in is how these things affect individuals. I actually tend to visualise the story before I outline. In fact, I often visualise far beyond where I think I’ll finish the story. (I say where I think I’ll finish because both my current long fics are now firmly in the “after the end of the planned fic” territory)

So, in Fuel the Pyre, for example, I imagine there’s a lot of unknowns for the people involved. Halflings would be pretty new on the scene, all things considered, so the characters themselves wouldn’t have the answer to these questions, which felt like a great excuse to add tension and drama.

Once an idea has got me and I can imagine how that conflict is going to affect the characters, the general outline tends to sort of write itself. I am a planner, so I by the time I start putting pen to paper (so to speak), I’ll usually have a beginning, a rough middle and an end. There will be plot points, tangents, twists and sometimes side stories that I haven’t figured out, but I’ll have a plan for the general flow of the story.

From there, I’ll come up with a pretty messy draft. So, I just sort of go wild in a document. Usually, when I’ve decided I want to write a longer fic, it’s because certain scenes just play on repeat in my head, so I’ll indulge myself and write those out. Then I’ll go back and make rough chapter/arc notes, which usually leads into some other fun scenes I get inspired to write, and slowly, piece by piece, I sort of string the fic together like that.

I used to outline more linearly, starting at the first chapter and working from there, but I found I’d get stuck on transition scenes (the bane of my writing life) and then avoid the fic. (If I put my fingers in my ears and sing very loudly, the transition scene can’t hurt me). I find letting myself write the scenes I’m excited for makes me much more productive. They usually give me ideas for other fun (I use the term loosely, I generally mean “angsty”) scenes and I essentially build my story like that. I do like adding foreshadowing and twists, which is made a lot easier by writing like this too.

In Purgatory, for example, I tried to drop a lot of subtle hints about Callum and his slowly building arcanum connection. It’s so fun when people pick up on that stuff, but I also don’t want it to look like I just pulled a twist or a revelation out of my rear. Nowadays, I do prefer to write the bulk of a story before posting, which this method obviously works better for.

Often, when I start a fic, the beginning and the ending are the most defined parts of the story and the middle is the area that requires the most work, but by stringing the various elements together, I sort of “discover” new conflicts and fun elements to explore, which (hopefully) makes for a richer, more entertaining story.

So, not sure if that was what you’re looking for, but if you could describe the stream of consciousness that is how I write, a process, this is mine. 😅
