In addition to the fact that Buffy having to get a job is a pretty core part of Season 6's wider themes of growing up and having to live in the world and realize life isn't always as romantic and heroic and simple as you'd imagined as a child, I think the show is actually pretty consistent when it comes to Joyce not being all that well off financially.
Sometimes people talk about Tara and Willow staying in Buffy's house over the summer she was dead as if Joyce had left Buffy some vast inheritance which they'd selfishly blown through without thinking, but I don't think that's supported by the text at all.
We know that Joyce started her own business when she moved to Sunnydale (I've seen some people suggest Joyce might be working for an existing gallery that was already present in Sunnydale, but in Welcome To The Hellmouth she tells Buffy "we may have found a space" for it and in Witch the gallery has its "first major show", which all seems to suggest that it didn't exist until Joyce arrived). We know Joyce spends a lot of time and effort trying to make the business work (Buffy says she must be tired when her mom gets home late one evening in Season 1's Angel and Joyce agrees that she is: "we're a little gallery, you have no idea how much..."). We know she doesn't have much of a staff: maybe just one assistant (the never-seen Carol; who might be the person Joyce is thinking of when she tells Buffy she can try to find somebody to cover for her at the gallery for her birthday when he dad cancels). We know that Joyce is bringing inventory home as early as Witch and that she soon starts using Buffy's room for storage after she leaves for college, which suggests that she doesn't have much free space at the gallery or many people to help her. We know the gallery is open on weekends (as per Prophecy Girl), that Joyce has to travel out of town to look for new art to purchase (which is why she's absent in What's My Line?). We know Joyce doesn't have much of a social life outside of work (she met Ted because was selling software she bought for the gallery, and she met I Was Made To Love You's Brian on her first day back at work there).
Obviously there are other, less mundane reasons why Buffy never gets to go on that trip to Disneyland she daydreams about in What's My Line?, but it feels noticeable that -- while her shadow self Cordelia talks about trips to Tuscany and St Croix and Aspen -- the closest thing Buffy ever gets to a holiday is ... visiting her dad in LA over the summer once? The nearest thing to a holiday Joyce ever seems to get is the one year she visits her sister for Thanksgiving. And, honestly, maybe this is part of the reason Joyce makes such a big deal of Christmas despite not seeming to be all that religious otherwise: this is the closest thing to the sort of holiday Buffy used to enjoy that she's capable of offering her now after the divorce.
We know that Joyce is "dreaming of bills" when Buffy wakes her up in Season 1's The Puppet Show, and when she buys Buffy a new dress in Prophecy Girl Buffy protests that "we can't afford this". (Obviously on the actual show Buffy wears an impossibly huge range of different outfits every single day which isn't particularly consistent with this reading, but I think we have to treat that the same way we treat the fact she apparently regularly goes to sleep wearing a full face of makeup: the actual teenage Buffy, as opposed to the version played by SMG we see on screen, probably does not own nearly so many clothes). When Joyce is encouraging Buffy to go to Northwestern in Season 3's Choices she admits it's "not cheap" but says they can make it work "if your father pitches in". When Buffy buys textbooks for college in The Freshman she jokingly worries the cost might give her mother an aneurysm. In School Hard Buffy talks about having a lot of pressure on her and Joyce tells her to "wait til you have job", and while obviously the reason for that line is primarily so that Buffy can look at her Slayer supplies and tell her reflection quietly that she already has a job, it's still a fact that Joyce has a job and implicitly considers it to be a source of a lot of pressure (despite Witch, for example, making it clear that Joyce remembers being a teenager was itself pretty stressful).
So I think it's actually pretty unsurprising that Buffy doesn't have much money after coming back to life. Even ignoring the fact that Flooded tells us Joyce's hospital bills ate up most her life insurance, I just don't think Joyce would have much to give her. I doubt Joyce owned the building the gallery was in, so she's probably renting that for a start (on top of the mortgage on the house), plus whatever she was paying Carol, the cost of acquiring and returning exhibits, the cost of any shows they had to cancel after Joyce's death when the gallery presumably shut down for good... Joyce was a self-employed middle-aged woman who probably hadn't really thought about her health much because she started getting headaches. She probably didn't have much in the way of untapped savings to fallback on: why else would she be so quick to rush back to work after she seemed to recover from her tumour? (She admits to Buffy when talking about Brian that she hadn't had time to get back up to speed on what her assistant had been doing while she was away.)
The Summers family were always certainly middle-class coded (unlike, say, Xander or Faith) and they had a comfortable lifestyle and a surprisingly large house (although, again, as with Buffy's many outfits, I think we can perhaps imagine that the "real" house isn't quite so spacious), but the idea that things were actually somewhat precarious was always there, bubbling under the surface. It just wasn't Buffy's problem when her mom was around.

What kind of work can be done on a commodore 64 or those other old computers? The tech back then was extremely limited but I keep seeing portable IBMs and such for office guys.
I asked a handful of friends for good examples, and while this isn't an exhaustive list, it should give you a taste.
I'll lean into the Commodore 64 as a baseline for what era to hone in one, let's take a look at 1982 +/-5 years.
A C64 can do home finances, spreadsheets, word processing, some math programming, and all sorts of other other basic productivity work. Games were the big thing you bought a C64 for, but we're not talking about games here -- we're talking about work. I bought one that someone used to write and maintain a local user group newsletter on both a C64C and C128D for years, printing labels and letters with their own home equipment, mailing floppies full of software around, that sorta thing.
IBM PCs eventually became capable of handling computer aided design (CAD) work, along with a bunch of other standard productivity software. The famous AutoCAD was mostly used on this platform, but it began life on S-100 based systems from the 1970s.
Spreadsheets were a really big deal for some platforms. Visicalc was the killer app that the Apple II can credit its initial success with. Many other platforms had clones of Visicalc (and eventually ports) because it was groundbreaking to do that sort of list-based mathematical work so quickly, and so error-free. I can't forget to mention Lotus 1-2-3 on the IBM PC compatibles, a staple of offices for a long time before Microsoft Office dominance.
CP/M machines like Kaypro luggables were an inexpensive way of making a "portable" productivity box, handling some of the lighter tasks mentioned above (as they had no graphics functionality).
The TRS-80 Model 100 was able to do alot of computing (mostly word processing) on nothing but a few AA batteries. They were a staple of field correspondence for newspaper journalists because they had an integrated modem. They're little slabs of computer, but they're awesomely portable, and great for writing on the go. Everyone you hear going nuts over cyberdecks gets that because of the Model 100.
Centurion minicomputers were mostly doing finances and general ledger work for oil companies out of Texas, but were used for all sorts of other comparable work. They were multi-user systems, running several terminals and atleast one printer on one central database. These were not high-performance machines, but entire offices were built around them.
Tandy, Panasonic, Sharp, and other brands of pocket computers were used for things like portable math, credit, loan, etc. calculation for car dealerships. Aircraft calculations, replacing slide rules were one other application available on cassette. These went beyond what a standard pocket calculator could do without a whole lot of extra work.
Even something like the IBM 5340 with an incredibly limited amount of RAM but it could handle tracking a general ledger, accounts receivable, inventory management, storing service orders for your company. Small bank branches uses them because they had peripherals that could handle automatic reading of the magnetic ink used on checks. Boring stuff, but important stuff.
I haven't even mentioned Digital Equipment Corporation, Data General, or a dozen other manufacturers.
I'm curious which portable IBM you were referring to initially.
All of these examples are limited by today's standards, but these were considered standard or even top of the line machines at the time. If you write software to take advantage of the hardware you have, however limited, you can do a surprising amount of work on a computer of that era.

"Jesse set me up so bad!" she cried, consumed by a fit of jealousy. Her brother had warned her — in no uncertain terms — not to mess with anything he’d stored in the shed. He made a point of it, even detailing the kind of consequences she could expect if she ignored him.
But being the narcissist that she was — and severely intoxicated at that — Krystal felt he had left her no choice. It was as if the warning itself had dared her to disobey.
She returned home from work the next evening and cracked open the first Twisted Tea of the night. That first sip was always the most refreshing. And there would be many more. After polishing off the first can and getting comfortable with the second, she slipped on her coveralls and headed out to the shed.
Inside, the space was packed. Bags of all kinds lined the walls, leaving barely enough room to move. Duffle bags, hockey bags, knapsacks, saddlebags, and reusable grocery totes were stacked among crates, cans, and cardboard boxes — none labeled beyond the word “JESSE” scrawled in black permanent marker.
Krystal’s imagination ran wild as she flipped open the first box. It was filled with collectible items — sports memorabilia, vintage toys and figures, and other trinkets Jesse had hoarded over the past 18 months. She didn’t care much for sports, nor did she know the first thing about antiques or collectibles — or retail value, for that matter.
She moved to the next box. This one contained electronics, left conveniently near the door. Programmable remotes, wireless peripherals, smart bulbs, and other gadgets she couldn’t identify. There were cables, batteries, and accessories she assumed were important. Her lack of familiarity gave her hope — if she didn’t know what they were, maybe they were rare. Maybe valuable.
She tore into the rest of the boxes, each more intriguing than the last. Most items, excluding the antiques, were new — still sealed in retail packaging, pristine, untouched. These weren’t just personal items; this was stock — inventory — the makings of a business.
Three desktop computers sat against the back wall, along with every cable, adapter, and peripheral they needed. The desks had been abandoned at the last place, but Jesse made sure the functional essentials — the brains of the operation — came with him.
She spotted the Canon Pixma All-in-One printer she had helped him buy months ago. Beside it were unopened packages of photo paper in two of the three compatible sizes. Only a few sheets had been used — test prints, she guessed. A full supply of software, cables, and adapters was stored nearby, ready for setup or repair.

Ain't got no use for AI.
Look, I get it. I work in IT (if indirectly), but I think we need to kill this AI thing in its crib before it results in a majority of the US workforce doing back-breaking non-automatable jobs for pittance.
My job is 70% procurement and 30% e-waste disposal.
My job exists because:
Our procurement software has a UI that I would describe charitably as "openly hostile".
Far too many employees have access to the procurement software.
The finance department does not hold regular trainings on how to use the software and there's no process to notify finance of new employees who have been granted procurement access so the new employees can be trained.
Until recently, there was nothing built into the software to stop people from buying things with money they don't have or that is allocated to other projects. (A janitor could buy a high-spec Mac Studio using another department's money or simply not pay for it after it arrives.) Technically "not paying" is still very much an issue I have to solve.
Until recently, there was nothing built into the software to stop people from buying things without approval. After a few high-profile issues, we finally broke down and bought a plugin to correct this issue.
There is nothing built into the software to prevent people from buying devices that do not comply with our standards or are wildly inappropriate for their work tasks. (Secretaries getting high-spec gaming PCs just because they had the money in their budgets.)
Until I pointed it out, there was no policy in place to divert newly-delivered IT equipment to the IT department for set up and endpoint management. Until I pushed for a policy change, IT equipment could (and often would) be purchased and delivered directly to the department unmanaged or in a few cases a less-scrupulous employee's home address for personal use.
Our inventory system is arcane and there are a sum total of three people with access to it. And that's the system we primarily use for IT lifecycle management!
All of these things could be fixed by just buying better procurement software, let alone procurement software enhanced by AI. The only reason my employers haven't liquidated me is because right now the annual cost of having a human clean up all the human errors caused by the cheap lousy software they bought is still lower than the annual cost of software that would prevent the human errors from happening in the first place. But for how long?
What about all the jobs AI is already taking? All the writing and editing and media production jobs that simply won't exist because it was easier to let a machine do it? (Ignore that all the CGI people have four thumbs and 12 toes, human. Watch our slop content and enjoy it! You aren't worth real art.)
All the marketing jobs that will be liquidated because the algorithm knows us better than we know ourselves. Where are they supposed to go?
What about all the programmers and developers being laid off because ChatGPT does a decent enough job and if you lower our expectations enough, people will just accept a lousy app to purchase their burritos and yell at the human driver when the burrito is wrong?
Where are these people (and many, many more) supposed to work?
We closed the factories. We didn't find new high-quality jobs for the factory workers, did we?
All the factory workers went to work in low-paying retail and service economy jobs. Oh wait, they've been laid off from those jobs too because we had to have self-checkout and self-service kiosks and now entire Dollar Generals are staffed by one employee.
Drive a taxi? Sorry that was replaced by sharing your car with strangers (Uber). Oh no wait sorry, the self-driving cars are taking that too.
Call centers? We shipped those overseas and then shuttered them because a phone tree with a realistic human voice and intentionally vexatious wait times will take care of the pesky callers.
Gig work? If AI hasn't taken them already, they will soon.
Agricultural work? Slaves Prison labor will replace that soon enough (and frankly prison laborers will likely also take many other menial tasks like package delivery or fulfillment warehouse jobs soon)
Again, what are the vast majority of people on this earth supposed to do? Because if you think we're getting UBI in the US, you are deluded.
When the car replaced the horse as the primary means of transportation and other machines took the place of horse labor, the population of equines declined. They weren't needed anymore.
Between 1915 and 2006/7 the horse and mule population declined 63.07% in the United States. The US equine population in 1915 was 26,493,000 (horses and mules). In 2006, the United States had around 9,500,000 horses (1), and the United States Census of Agriculture for 2007 (table 31) counted 283,806 mules and burros (2).
And while the horse population has rebounded in the years since, it's because of enthusiasts wanting to breed more horses for entertainment and luxury purposes.
No one found the horses new jobs when the horse jobs disappeared. We simply stopped breeding horses. (And that's assuming, charitably, that we didn't juice the decline by culling the horse population.)
When our jobs disappear, do you think our overlords will just keep us around? I mean sure we're taking care of the population problem for them (a little too well actually, thus the anti-abortion laws), so they likely won't turn us into glue.
They'll still need people to fix the machines when they break and to continue building and creating better and better AI and machines to take care of their every whim.
And they'll need some people to do all the work the AI and robots cannot do yet.
And they'll want people for entertainment and luxury: Actors, singers, athletes, and playthings they can use as they please.
But ultimately what all these "tech-bros", "technocrats", "effective altruists", and "techno-progressivists" really really want is world that caters exclusively to their needs and all the inconvenient people who have needs of their own are swept into the recycle bin and discarded without a second thought. The techno-overlords are tired of negotiating with us because they don't believe they should have to. We aren't their equals, if they even consider us human. They need some of us to do their bidding and some of us to keep around to torture and dominate to make them feel like gods. Beyond that, the rest of us are just excess people breathing up all the air.
AI has to go, not because the AI itself is dangerous, but because the people whom the AI ultimately serves have told us time and time again who they really are. It's time for us to believe them. Why houses are so expensive in America. - μ's analysis
Inventory.
That's the short version. We just have too few.
But how does this affect anything? After all, places like Seattle have been building apartment buildings a lot recently.
They've been building too few apartment buildings.
Alright, I'll stop beating around the bush. What do I mean?
Well, you see, in the United States (and indeed, in most parts of the world) we've decided to treat housing as an investment opportunity. Buy your house now, and sell it for more in the future. "It helps build the wealth of American families by giving them an asset that will never depreciate!"
And this may have worked a long time ago, when there were fewer people (and when a different kind of development pattern was more common) and wealth inequality wasn't so intense, even if it could be claimed that the housing market was better off in the early 1900s (a point where it got so bad that we created antitrust laws) relative to today.
But the United States has a lot more people than it did 40 years ago. And the way we've changed our land use hasn't exactly helped.
You see, the idea of houses as investment runs into a little problem. With housing being such a lucrative investment where returns are guaranteed, it's really high in demand. But this causes a problem when the amount of newly built/empty housing units in a metro area is less than the number of people who want to move there.
Take the story of San Francisco as an example. Towards the ladder end of the 20th century, the concept of a tech company came into existence. And tech companies, especially software developers, were able to have HUGE profit margins. So, having someone skilled in developing software was very valuable, and worth top dollar salaries. And San Francisco was where a majority of them were located. This quickly meant that someone could go to university, graduate in 4 years with a computer science degree, then move to San Francisco and immediately earn six figures.
Unfortunately, the number of people coming into San Francisco for these jobs was greater than the existing housing stock, causing prices for these houses to tend towards the highest bidders.
And they went to the highest bidders because, if you bought your house in the 1960s for 50k, and now, in the 1990s, upon listing it, you get offers up to 300k, you're probably going to take the 300k offer. Why accept someone else who can only afford 70k for your house?
And the average price of houses drove up, because the number of prospective citizens who were offering massive sums for the houses was higher than the number of housing units that were available for them to buy.
So... how exactly does a city go about fixing this problem? How do they drive down the price of housing?
Some of you are itching to propose that they just build more houses, after all, if quantity is a problem, then quantity should surely fix it.
Luckily, we have a metro area who's done just that.
Phoenix, Arizona
An in-demand, giant metro area with the perfect geography for just building tract housing for miles and miles.
...And we find the same pattern. Phoenix homes in 2020 were an average of ~$300k, whereas they average ~480k nowadays.
Why, then, does this happen? A lot of people have claimed that a lot of different factors are at fault: Houses just... naturally increase this much all the time; companies are buying all the houses and renting them out; Joe Biden.
But the real reason is simple: Single-family houses are really inefficient.
That's the biggest reason. They're just too inefficient to be making up as much of the housing stock as they do.
Just look at San Francisco on satellite view. South of San Bruno Mountain and the Oakland side of the bay are all these detached, single-family houses separated by yards and giant roads.
Don't trust the observations of satellite imagery? Well here are your numbers:
Of the urbanized area, about 75 percent is in primarily single-family residential neighborhoods, representing 69 percent of the region’s total housing stock.
The kinds of dense, mixed-use areas that support walking and high-quality transit make up only 1 percent of the urbanized area but are home to 5 percent of its residents and 29 percent of its jobs.

The average lot for a Single-Family residence in the bay area is ~5000sqft(~490sqm) That means you could put two 2000sqft units on one lot, and still have 1000sqft leftover. And that's not to mention how much more you could get by adding floors.
Assuming three floors, a totally reasonable height that wouldn't really kill the look of any particular neighborhood (especially if this is being built near the transition from residential to commercial and going outward from there) then we could get the following setup:
Two 2500sqft units, three 1600sqft units, and then four 1250sqft units. That means, on the space of a SINGLE home with SINGLE family, you can build a 9-unit apartment building that can hold ~25 people.
This is just more efficient than the current solution: build outward and build low.
And focusing more housing development into replacing old stock towards the urban center from the 1970s means less freeway congestion and more demand for higher-efficiency, environmentally friendly transit modes.

Ok so this old Pikmin OC right? Old art, hadn't really gotten a grasp on my tools yet, blah blah blah, excuses excuses. I figured what about her design left me unsatisfied and what about it was cute as beans, and gave her a rehaul. And some friends.
Introducing the crew of the RMS GUILDMASTER, a team of three space pirates and a horse that travel the galaxy in search of power. Power through force, power through technology, power through artifacts and creatures beyond the scope of their understanding...
Mina Rybakai (Center, She/Her in reference to, uses We/Our when speaking), of planet Rybakai. Her surname is the same as her planet, yes. Only because she's next in line to own the whole thing. Rybakaian royalty is required to perform military service in the name of the planet before ascending, so on a technicality the "Pirates" are legally "Privateers". They hate that, don't call them privateers. The GUILDMASTER belongs to her, or rather her royal family, making her the captain. In practice however, she treats all of the crew as equals as well as generally doesn't quite understand how to lead. She's cheerful and rebellious by nature but has a calculative streak in her a mile wide. Often deliberately, she tricks anyone who dares cross her or the crew into believing she's not a threat with a sweet act, pretending she's just some ditz with a big fork before going in for the kill. Her weapon of choice is tridents, and as a fish-girl she's far more gifted at swimming, floating, underwater combat, and anything to do with bodies of water large or small than your regular old elven spacepeoples. She also has a not-at-all hidden adoration for trashy teen pop punk music and taught herself how to play the bass, surprisingly well for someone without separated fingers. Her preferred Pikmin types are Ice, Winged, and Blue.
Rachel Aragno (Right, She/Her), of planet Kumoshigoto. The daughter of the owner of the Kankor Conglomerate, the most powerful business conglomerate across several planets within the intergalactic commission. She is not next in line for the company as her father intends on marrying her off. She manages to find an out every time with a little hacking, either by draining them financially or by ruining their reputations. Her talents lie in espionage and deception, as well as a general affinity for business and technology. Software only. Try to put her in front of a fried computer and she just might combust herself. She's the most physically capable of the crew, able to carry over her body weight per pair of arms. She's also got a secret pair of arms hidden in her hair. They fold up into her braid when she's in her suit to save on space. Her swordsmanship is unparalleled and relentless, though she lacks experience in fighting anything that isn't another sapient being in a controlled duel. She's more of a captain than the actual captain despite being the newest addition, managing their plans, "earnings", schedule, inventory, everything. If anyone else touches any of her jobs, she'll redo it anyway, since they probably did it wrong. She's serious and cold to anyone that isn't the crew, only showing a softer side to them... And the Pikmin, when absolutely nobody else is watching. She's the type of person to take card and board games way too seriously, competition is one of the few ways to reliably break her composure. Her favorite types of Pikmin are Rock and Red.
Byrd (Left, He/Him), who refuses to reveal his home planet to anyone. Mina happened to pick him up somewhere and has been sworn to secrecy on where that is, too. He's a sharpshooter surrounded by mystery, hiding his eyes, his intentions, and where exactly his horse came from. Or if it's even a horse. He calls it a horse, but nobody's really sure... His energy pistol can draw from proximity, and he's found that the emissions of Pikmin are the ultimate in renewable diverse power. Depending on what Pikmin he's commanding, the type of energy he can fire changes. Red Pikmin offer a beam that's great at attacking enemies, but poor at hitting switches or damaging his surroundings. Yellow Pikmin energy releases in a slow-moving orb that can activate traps or buttons. Blue Pikmin energy releases in a fast wave that can erode away walls, push at light objects, and even part bodies of water if he's got enough of it. He's intuitive and great at puzzles and problem solving, though he also bears a general distrust of anyone that isn't the horse. He's a fair bit on the lazy side as well, just as ready to opt to take a nap and let someone else handle a situation as he is to wrangle it himself. He can't draw any energy his pistol can use, so he likes to just stick easy with the three primary colors.
The "Horse" (Behind Byrd, It/Its or whatever is funniest at the time), nobody knows where it came from. Not even Byrd. He just found it in a traveling xenocircus and stole it. Not even on the same planet Mina found the two of them on. It takes well to any rider but it's favorite is Byrd by a long shot. It isn't bothered by rough terrain or unruly weather in the slightest, it'll march onward regardless. It doesn't seem to get tired either, but it always dons a sort of sleepy expression. It eats primarily vegetation, but it can stomach anything. Alien plants, poisonous plants, plants that might actually be animals... Except the Pikmin. It vehemently avoids eating the Pikmin, going as far as to even avoid explicitly safe food that's been in prolonged contact with them. Maybe it knows something everyone else doesn't... Or maybe you shouldn't base a conspiracy off of a creature that hunts down and eats Skitter Leaves for fun. Any creature, for that matter. The horse does, otherwise, behave like a horse. It neighs, whinnies, snorts and stomps. It's also fond of taking long walks on picturesque beaches and trying to wear Byrd's hat.
The RMS GUILDMASTER is equipped to handle everyone's needs and wants. A complex waterway accompanies and connects every room, a necessity for Mina if she wants to do anything outside of her suit. Like eating. Sleeping. Living. There's also a high-end computer management program installed that Rachel takes the utmost care of, updating it, maintaining every file and ensuring its firewall is up-to-date down to the second. There is an autopilot, but Byrd takes the metaphorical wheel more often than not thanks to the crew's sheer spontaneity and his ability to perform a vertical hairpin turn. Useful for outrunning enemy ships when the weapons and shield system isn't cutting it.
What ties the crew together in their conquest is ultimately a sense of selfishness. Mina could stop at all at any time and take up the mantle of Queen of Rybakai, but she doesn't want to. She wants to keep living a life of adventure. Rachel could go back to Kumoshigoto and eventually commandeer Kankor, but she doesn't want to. She wants to be more than just what she was born into. Byrd could give up the ghost and tell the crew who he really is and where he's from, but he doesn't want to. He wants to keep being nobody and escaping expectations. The horse... Really does know something they don't.
