i was filled with an urge to start working on home stuck sprite game again, but was like "no i probably shouldn't it kinda sucks shit and is cringe"

then i started replaying it again for kicks (and to see what i'd even have to work on next) and my self deprecation was MISPLACED, my ass is fat and i have a winning personality and my shitpost game slaps actually

Vriska’s entire purpose as a gimmick character who starts off with kinda awful stats but get’s incredibly broken if you stick with her long enough FINALLY works!!!! endless random crits if you have the patience to steal them >:)

(waffle cones have a 100% crit chance even though they never attack you, so you could max out her crit rate in like 7 encounters with those guys if you *really* wanted to run around in one spot waiting for their absurdly low encounter rate to trigger)

I understand that the battles should be harder because the story is progressing, but my God, all in moderation. I'm stuck on 4-78 now and man, it's NOT fun. The battles are annoying and they're longer than my lifespan and there are 45+ angels at least and 60+ at most and they don't die fast and there are no means for proper distribution of team members and everyone in my team is popping to death and

edit 22: I stopped trying to get past that battle because first, it got too annoying and two, PB said that the difficulty of battles before Chapter 5 would be reduced in the latest update, so I waited, updated the game today, and... I CANNOT BELIEVE HOW MUCH EASIER THEY GOT. Honestly, I thought the difficulty would only be lowered a lick, but wow, it really was taken down a BIG notch fr fr. THANK YOU PB! I made it to Chapter 5, finallyyyyyy :D Also, Leviathan at the end of Chapter 4 made me really like him for the exact reason a number of people dislike him: his attitude and how he deals with MC. To be honest, everyone coddles her too much and blindly encourages her excessive tendencies, so there must be at least one person who sets boundaries and scolds her when she goes overboard—and that someone seems to be Leviathan (hopefully). I'm aware that he will end up feeling attracted to her at some point too, but he will obviously give her a hard time nevertheless and I'm all for it lol Anyways, I'm going to avoid spoilers like I avoid milk, yoghurt and cheese I hate almost everything dairy until I finish Chapter 5, so...yup!

OKAY. Omg.

So first of all? Soundtrack? SLAPS. We won. We won with the sequel soundtrack. I actually prefer some of the new remixes to the original!

The artwork? Stuck to the original style. Can’t complain at all. The new designs? PEAK. They’re so cool. There’s new shopkeepers- who look AWESOME- who have LORE. We can access NPC LORE. I read about one who is married to one of the players? Catch me eating popcorn at that story.

Shout out to the sprites you get when you’re feeding your party members? They’re so cute. In original TWEWY we just had a voice telling us if they liked it after I’ve fed them. NOW we get to know via their face going 🤢 or 🥺 BEFORE they eat so I can give them something they definelty like! and I think that’s fun and funky fresh.

Gameplay? Fantastic. Absolutely brilliant. - the original game had a switch port and honestly? I really think they should’ve done better with the controls. What worked and was beautiful for the ds- felt very clunky on the switch. Especially when playing console? I mean what in the Wii controller buLLSHIT. I need my attacks ACCURATE and on tv that’s very very hard. My friend managed it but? Maybe I just need to get good LSLGFSPALDL. But NEO twewy? beautiful. Perfect. Great for the switch. no complaints on the new battle system.

The story:

edit: THE HUMOUR IS THERE. I FORGOR. I forgot how fucking funny it is. The amount of screenshots I have? Hilarious. Not any like quotable moments like there is in the original game. But there’s so much silly billy shit going on. Bunch of CLOWNS I swear.

Its messaging is not driven home as much as the original twewy is. Like my friend had to explain to me what they were doing because it’s very very subtle. The characters are changing but only just a little. -unlike the first game which, like? At the end of the game? These guys are CLEARLY not the same people who entered the game!! These are Zuko ATLA level transformations!!!: whereas Neo twewy game says? Hey. Your actions are kinda sucky bro. Ever thought about changing up your style? Like it’s THERE. But it’s clearly not the CORE of the game like the first one. And that’s where it falls flat FOR ME. I LOVE and ADORE character development and it’s just not the focus of NEO twewy. But that doesn’t mean I hated the game. I just don’t prefer it over the original.

What NEO twewy DOES focus on is world building which. I think they’ve made some super cool and interesting choices. Even if I, and many Joshua kiryu fans don’t agree with them. 💛 we just straight up ignore the new lore because we don’t like it- the one around Joshua anyway. They bring in some new reapers and some new plot line surrounding shinjuku. That’s fine. That’s fun. But. Joshua? MY MAN? No square enix, you don’t know my blorbo of 10 years better than me :))

So. In conclusion. I was not DISAPPOINTED. I just think they lost the core of what twewy meant to people for the sake of focusing on the new details theyve added. I think rindo and fret and nagi deserved better development.

ALSO IDK HOW I FEEL ABOUT TEAMS? I MISS PARTNERS. LIKE TEAMS IS FINE I GUESS BUT. PARTNER WAS SPECIAL.

Okokok real conclusion is that I was not disappointed. I had fun. I loved a lot about this game. But the original hit home so hard, and the sequel was just a good game.

Below are some translation notes (spoiler warning)

This was my first ever major translation project. Since it spanned the time of almost two years, the quality of the translations may increase as you play through the game. Nonetheless I have gone back and redone a lot of the earlier dialogue with the help of a friend to make it sound more natural in English. If you find any errors or typos, you may leave an ask and I will correct it in a patch update.

In order to keep the spirit of an actual Ace Attorney game, several things were changed. Most notably, the characters names.

Names:

稲刈たんぼ (Inekari Tanbo) is Phoenix Wruff. People familiar with the Japanese Ace Attorney names may recognize that this name is nowhere near Naruhodou Ryuuichi. That's simply because this character, as with Edgewurrth, were not actually named after the main characters of the original series. I decided to change this given their clear homage. Inekari Tanbo literally means "harvesting (a) rice paddy".

条框蓮司(レンジ) (Jyoukamachi Renji) is Miles Edgewurrth. To be honest, I don't think there is a pun in his name. At the very least, I had trouble thinking of what it could be. If somebody knows, let me know. The most I can figure is the first kanji in his name can mean "streak", and according to Cheshire, Edgewurrth was supposed to get the white streak of hair, not Abe, but he didn't like how it looked on the former.

萬舞 (Man Mau) is Krystal "Kris" Balle. Her name means "10,000 dances", hence her English name.

濡沼 ウキモ (Nuranuma Ukimo) is Ashley Goodhead. Ukimo doesn't seem to have much significance as a word, although it could be related to 浮き which means to float, as in like, floating in water. I say this because the other parts of Ukimo's name, 濡(Nura)沼(Numa) refer to being wet and to swamps.

If this is true, why the name choice? Well, it's very complicated...

濡 Means a little more than just being wet. It also can mean being wet in the sexual sense. There's also the word 濡れ衣 (Nuraginu) which means to be falsely accused of a crime (literally and archaically "wet clothes"). Both these I would say fit Ukimo, not only because of her story position of being falsely accused, but also, well... just look at her design. It would be naive to claim there's nothing sexual about it.

沼 has some connotations among gaming, interestingly. It can mean being addicted to something (that something being a piece of media, typically) or being "swamped" in a game, i.e being stuck and unable to progress.

Now, this meaning of the word has only come into play somewhat recently. Like, 2015-ish. Which makes it sort of inapplicable, since Gyaku San was created around 2003.

A different slang use of 沼 that was used around this time was 池沼 which means, basically, the r slur... in a way? It's used to make fun of "weird" or "cringe" behavior, typically present in those with mental disability. It's a homophone of 知障, which does mean "mental disability​".

With all this in mind, I had a very hard time piecing together a name for Ukimo that would feel at home in Ace Attorney. Especially because I don't know the full extent of what Cheshire had in mind when naming her.

Ashley was chosen given that, to me, it is a very "popular teenage girl" name. "Ash" would also make her closely related to "Phoenix". (Get it? LOL). I almost debated on making any use of ウキモちゃん (Ukimo-chan) be "Ash", but decided it would be kind of weird...

Goodhead was chosen for several reasons. It, of course, is a clear sexual pun, but it is also a reference to James Bond, something I feel could encapsulate some of the slang meanings of 沼 (media obsession) while serving to imitate Ace Attorney's love of pop culture references. "Goodhead" could also be taken literally, as in meaning she has a good head on her shoulders, which would refer to her being innocent; the "false accusation" meaning in her name.

It was the best I could do. Orz.

阿部伊知郎 (Abe Ichirou) is Abe Founder. He kept the first part, although his last name became his first name, and his original first name means "The one wise son". However, without the kanji, "ichirou" can mean to fail your college entrance exam. Considering that he lies about going to a prestigious college when he actually went to a average one reminded me of this, so his last name was chosen to hold similar meaning. "Founder", as a noun, can mean someone who establishes something, and typically this is used with positive connotation. However, as a verb, it can mean "failure", which I think is apt and captures this stark contrast meaning.

Many things in the game were changed to better be understood by a Western audience, such as obscure Japanese pop culture references and suchlike. The backwards poster bit was the hardest, but I managed to pull it off. In short, Ashley's - or Ukimo's - poster originally was a reference to an old Japanese song (likely) that had さんさん(san san) written. When read from the back, さ looks like ち(chi). The "look dood" poster said 犬さんぽ in the original, which means "dog stroll". But when read from the back, it looks like 犬ちんぽ which means "dog penis". I did my best with this, haha.

Got the Octopath Traveler artbook but got no scanner. I'll leave someone else to figure out a pdf: In the meantime, here's a few notes I made for my roleplay group. I'm sure there's more, this was just the most relevant stuff to us it felt.

Overall:

Designs needed to be down to earth compared to other titles to fit with game themes

Care was given to how other background characters of their classes might look, but characters still needed to stand out a little.

It was very very important that the character's personality shone through in all the character job sprites, thus the custom design works for each.

The hearth seems emphasized in all the home building concepts. They're not all build for the same utilisation but they're all reflected pretty centrally. Take note.

Tomes and stories are common imagery in concepts.

There's actually a leaf in the currency symbol!

Belts and cords were used on time-inappropriate designs to make them seem more medieval (mentioned with the obsidians designs). This trick persisted into CotC

Japanese fans sent valentines chocolates to the characters? All who received are depicted in the valentines sprite spread.

Modern stage illustration took specific care to depict their personalities

Characters

Primrose:

Her visuals are meant to carry a sense of both her allure and sadness

Older-sister type inspired animations

The white dress in the end card symbolizes freedom from her burdens, reflecting a "more poignant conclusion" than the other travelers.

Olberic:

"image of a burly, diligent father figure from the Showa era"

His forehead scar also grazes his ear. Armor from the king and sword design resembles his straightforward swordplay.

"UP THE VIRILITY"

Strong and stoic nature kept in mind for animations (radiates some majesty, but not mentioned by that word)

Sprite designer was impressed by his Japanese VA and it stuck with him

Expression slightly more "gung-ho" than usual, in his ending picture sparring with Phillip.

His "Berg" persona is listed among the shepherd designs. "He makes a living bringing wool and ewe milk (sometimes processed) down from the mountain, selling them or exchanging them for goods"

Has "adjusted to life among the mountainfolk" (NOT reflective of his prior lifestyle?)

Olberic and Erhardt are notably depicted together, fighting in the valentines art.

Therion could steal apples from his basket because he lowers his guard around comrades!

Modern Olberic seems to lean towards 80's rock aesthetics (noted by artist) (He's depicted as unusually smug every time he's holding a guitar.)

He is like a full head taller than everyone else in all the group art

Alfyn:

Start image based on "adolescent youth coming home from school activities with the sun in his back. End illustration depicts him "as adult Alfyn" working with Zeph and Nina. Growing up theme implied.

Hair "like grass billowing in the wind"

Axe is a daily life tool first, weapon second. He carries it on his best, around his back, under his vest.

"The type of guy you'd see anywhere, but leaving an impression with a passionate heart."

Quick to "jump the gun", good natured and gung-ho, sometimes gets him and others in trouble.

Apothecary guild sends you a vest and bag once you're accepted. They're uniform. Also implying Alfyn and Zeph swapped Uniform pieces. Vanessa notably only wears a bag, not a vest.

Alfyn got his name from a type of dog (The one on Alfyn's head)

Miguel was originally laughing at crying Alfyn in the valentines art.

Therion:

Isn't shy to steal from friends and teammates

Barely emotes. "Cool handsome dude."

Bemused countdown smirk was made to show a hidden side of Therion that didn't get much highlight in the games.

Yeah no the apple is everywhere in his art. Not just once or twice. Even his crossover with H'aanit have an apple with an arrow balanced on his head. Seems central symbolism.

Therion is purposefully turned away in the depiction of them travelling as friends.

"Quick to draw but whiffs almost every strike"

H'aanit:

Strong and beautiful, but calm core aesthetic. At one with nature. "Natural stand that don't require movements come naturally to her."

No metal on her whatsoever. All "metallic" bits are horn and bone to avoid shine when hunting.

hair is canonically pink-golden.

She is telling her stories to Z'aanta in her ending credits. "They've got plenty to talk about"

Made Linde's tail-decoration herself and put it on her as a child. Made the decorations for Hägen too cause he seemed envious.

Tiny child H'aanit depicted with twin braids and holding a kitten Linde. Met early in life.

Cyrus:

Eyes bright and always seem to gaze off "at some dazzling scenery".

Robe is NOT worn correctly. Uniform robe is more robe-like, Cyrus wears it like a coat.

Split bangs to avoid him looking too young.

"The type of man who looks good while sitting"

Does not pay attention to where he's going. Dense to "ways of the world" (valentines drawing, did not recognize white day.) Odette laughing at him finished the piece satisfyingly according to artist.

Highly expressive but not boisterous.

Dozed over after work in his ending credit. It's definitely meant to be night, showing his continued long working hours

He plays the piano? The art depicting the group taking a load off apparently started with him playing, and everyone else deciding to relax following.

Tressa:

Core concept is her lively, cheerful energy and eloquence.

The folded blanket on her rucksack is her pop-up store blanket.

Closely discerns wares with a serious face.

Different serious face from promotional art, which is "seldom seem"

All areas surrounding her character are designed to be whimsical and adventurous.

Definitely meant to be 18, but short.

Ending credit shows "tangible growth" and her parents are meant to reflect fondness as she listens to her stories. "She won't run out of them soon"

Ophilia:

"Like a wildflower blooming valiantly from the snow-covered ground" "A proverbial guiding star - a shepherd to guide the way" "The image of a sun here suits Philia to a T."

Face and hair edited from early concept to reflect "intelligence and decisive will" to avoid airhead stereotype.

Shares the same strength in her eyes as Primrose

Depicted to thoughtfully share and lead people

turquoise colour differentiates aelfric flame from normal fire. Colour reflected in Ophilia's design for a "pop"

Dress is only not designed to be warmer 'cause it stood out like a sore thumb in warm areas

"Tidy and trim appearance, combined with dedication to her calling."

Receding winter and blooming flowers in their special place is symbolism for Ophilia and Lianna's bright future in their ending card.

Erhardt:

His design was requested ASAP so details didn't get to be brushed up on. (Analyze less literally than others)

Composed stance stands out showing his calm demeanor (Seems contested in early concepts? They wanted him imposing then, but it must've grown on them). Stance allows for MOVEMENT

Knuckles took a deep breath, enjoying the clear air. He closed his eyes and leaned against the Master Emerald.

It was refreshing, especially since he and the others had just gotten home from another adventure.

The echidna was more than happy to be back home. Soaking in the Master Emerald’s warmth, listening to all the critters playing around on the island, etc.

It was perfect.

“Ow, dangit!”

Too bad perfect things don’t last forever.

Knuckles peaked an eye open and looked over at the steps of the shrine, watching as the fox stuck the side of his finger into his mouth.

“Everything okay, bud?” He called, watching as one of the big ears flicked before swiveling towards him, showing that the younger was listening to him.

“Yeah,” Tails grumbled after pulling his finger after his mouth, “this stupid thing just clipped me.”

The echidna hummed before walking over to the kit, taking a seat next to him. He was working on repairing the Miles Electric, it had gotten destroyed during their adventure.

Knuckles hadn’t seen the kid that sad in a while.

Tails glanced over for a second before returning to what he was doing, getting lost once again in his work.

Watching the younger work amused Knuckles. He didn’t understand a single thing he was doing, but it was still interesting to watch.

Tails’ movements were so fluent, so confident. With the way he worked, the echidna was sure he could repair the damned thing blindfolded and with an arm tied behind his back.

Well, until the kit groaned and slammed the tablet on the ground beside him, glaring at it.

Knuckles blinked in surprise, not having expected the small outburst.

“What was–” He started, but stopped when Tails’s ears folded against his head as he looked away from the Miles Electric with a pout.

They sat in silence for a minute. Mostly because Knuckles had no idea how to react to that.

“Uh,” He leaned forward slightly to try and make eye contact, but the younger just turned away and crossed his arms, “are you–”

“I’m fine.” Tails mumbled, one of his namesakes curling around to rest on his lap, “Just frustrated.”

Knuckles thought on it for a second before nodding, showing he understood. He should probably leave the kid alone for a while.

But..

“I’d never thought I’d say this,” He started, smiling a little when he saw the other’s ears flick, “but I just realized I do agree with something Sonic has said.”

Tails’ brow furrowed before he turned to look up at the older, “What?”

The smile on Knuckles’ face quickly turned into a smirk, “You’re adorable when you’re angry.”

He barely kept himself from snorting as he watched the younger’s expression change as he finally registered what the echidna said.

“What?!” Tails’s cheeks flushed, but Knuckles wasn’t sure if it was because he was embarrassed or frustrated, “I am not!”

“Mm..” Knuckles hummed, shaking his head, “that’s what I had thought before. I didn’t think it was possible to look cute when mad, but you’ve proved me wrong.”

“I–” The kit went to argue, but bailed, deciding to turn and hide his face away in his tails. The older let out a soft chuckle, letting his hand gently rub his back.

“It’s nothing to be embarrassed over.” He said, “it could be a useful manipulation tactic.”

“I think I prefer you and Sonic fighting because of stupid stuff over this.” Tails grumbled, muffled by his namesakes.

“If you’re trying to change my mind, this isn’t helping.” Knuckles smirked at the glare he received from the younger.

“I thought I could trust you not to do this type of thing, Knuckles!” Tails whined, his ears drooping, “I already have to hear this from Sonic and Amy!”

“Sorry to have disappointed you, little one, but your cuteness was too much for me.” The fox groaned, dropping his head into his hands.

The echidna laughed and pulled the younger to his side, patting his shoulder a few times. They sat in the same position for roughly five minutes before Tails sighed and leaned into the other, wrapping his namesakes around the two of them.

Knuckles smiled at him, but didn’t say anything. He figured the fox was embarrassed enough for one day.

What's the otome game/romance RPG you've been working on O;?

It is a very self-indulgent lil game I started to make based off a book I was writing that I am very overattached to lol. Basically, the player wakes up in Purgatory after dying, but they're trapped in a circle/level that's the afterlife equivalent of 'closed to the public.' Wherein you then encounter a cast of rotating Mysterious Antagonists who all are clearly looking for something hidden within your new home. So you're trying to figure out why you're here in the first place, what's going on with Heaven and Hell that's keeping you stuck there, who you want to trust, which sides of a centuries-spanning war to support (if any), and all other sorts of messy shenanigans that come with being Dead

And these are of course the Three Big Problem Children. I love them dearly. And if I make any more expression sprites for them out of the dozens I've stupidly drawn already my hand is going to fall off jesus chRIST

I’m working through my inbox but don’t want to drown y’all’s feed in my asks so I’m grouping as many together as I can. Q&A below:

MISC SONIC ASKS

Thank you so very much! I was trying to really combine both Amy and Sonic’s aesthetics. Amy is classy and design oriented so I wanted to keep that feel, but I wanted to show how their home would evolve once she and Sonic start living together. Sonic’s never canonically had a house, but he travels so much that I headcanon that he’s constantly collecting trinkets and souvenirs from all the places he’s visited. So I wanted to give them a very “worldly” design style. If you’re familiar with Uncharted 4, I picture Sonic and Amy’s house being very much like Nate and Elena’s beach house.

I love interior design and architecture but I’m not great at drawing it (yet). Once I improve I want to do a full layout of their house for my stories (and the future Shadora Fortress).

I really enjoyed the movies and I’m excited for the third! I hope they give Shadow a voice that’s deep and delicious and doesn’t sound like a sniveling villain. I don’t like it when they cast him with a very generic evil voice, I prefer it when he’s got depth. Honestly I’d be happy if they stuck with Ian Hanlin, he’s perfect to me. 

For the record, I absolutely love that game. Some of my favorite memories involve me and my best friend playing it. He ABSOLUTELY is an avid gun collector. I love seeing the memes of Shadow just rambling off about gun details. BUT HE KEEPS THAT CRAP LOCKED UP IN A SAFE AND UNLOADED AT ALL TIMES!!!!

At least for my stories he isn’t one to actually threaten to harm anybody for wanting to date his kids. He dealt with that enough trying to be with Aurora. But you can bet he won’t think anybody’s worthy to date his kids lol

First of all, I am ALWAYS down for Sonic singing his feelings. Like that is my #1 favorite thing in every story. Whenever he breaks out the guitar/lute I’m like “HELL YEAH LET’S DO THIS”

Secondly, that SONG omg!!! I’d never heard it before but wow 😭 I couldn’t love it more. I completely agree and thank you so much for sharing with me!

That is so funny that you say that. It was not my intention to make human Sonic look like RCS but honestly he is my favorite Sonic at this point so maybe it came out subliminally! Also I think Roger is just so damn handsome so I will take that as a compliment lol! 

SHIPPING ASKS

I do ship them but I don’t know about them having kids. I don’t really know those characters well enough to write family members for them and I wouldn’t want to do it wrong. Thank you!

I’m fine with any of your ships as long as it’s not with relatives. And as long as you keep my characters “in character” then that’s fine. 

Interesting! 🤔 I haven’t heard that pairing before but hey I’m certainly not going to tell you that you can’t ship them together. 

I loved Amy the minute I saw her so just from a superficial level I was like “These two are too cute together!” But I really fell in love with them when their story evolved and we got to see their dynamism in the games outside of just a cute little pink sprite in Sonic CD. And Sonic X really sealed the deal haha So many romantic moments between them in that show, God bless. 

Sonic and Amy were just making out, not anything more. Orbot and Cubot aren’t accustomed to seeing that so that’s why they reacted that way. 

I don’t have any plans on that at the moment. I like that universe and I especially loved how Sonic acted around her in it, but idk if I’ll make a comic about it. But I can never say never!

PERSONAL ASKS

I’m sorry to have worried you, but honestly I was okay while I was away. I went through a lot of major life events and I had lost my drawing mojo and was fighting to get it back. But now it’s back with a vengeance!

I plan on doing both. I know several amazing parents who do a wonderful job raising their kids and still follow their passion.

Thank you so much! I’m self-taught, but I’ve researched a lot of tutorials and references to help me improve over my life. The number one thing people need to study if they want to do comics or animations or anything is ANATOMY! You don’t have to take an anatomy class (I didn’t), but look up references and tutorials to learn how the spine works, how the muscles work, proportions, etc. Even if your characters don’t fall into the typical human form, you still need to understand skeletal structure and muscles. 

I’m not an avid listener but I do like some if her songs :)

AURORA ASKS

Thank you! Yes that’s pretty accurate. Their family is all about honesty and telling the truth, but younger Aurora doesn’t like to share all the details with Sonic because he’s so reactive with her and will quickly try to fix whatever the problem is and Aurora wants to learn to fix it herself. Amy is more willing to just listen to Aurora and offer advice if Aurora asks for it. Amy WANTS to beat up whoever is upsetting her daughter but she also knows the importance of learning how to fight for yourself so she wants Aurora to feel empowered to do that. 

Thank you! I hope you’re having a great day too! I think Amy is better at TALKING through feelings and Sonic’s better at the overall cheering up way of handling things. So as long as there’s nothing terribly awful bothering Aurora and she’s just feeling a little down, he’ll find ways to make her laugh. Sometimes that means walking in unexpectedly in a costume to shock her or dragging her out of the room to have a musical jam session together. 

Sonic’s also known to give people flowers when they’re sad in canon (he does this regularly in the games and in Sonic X), so he’ll bring her bright, colorful flowers to make her smile. 

In my AU, Eggman has already kind of peaked by the time of Boom!Baby. He’s softened a lot and isn’t interested so much in world domination as he just wants attention lol. Having Sage and becoming a father further helped me justify that with my AU. 

He's also particularly sentimental towards Aurora since he helped deliver her, so he doesn’t really fight the team anymore. He is more like a constant pain in their sides mucking things up. 

Sonic team is busy fighting other, newer foes in my AU.

Their biggest challenge is going to be the Time Travel comic that I haven’t completed yet. It’s hardest because not only will lives be put on the line, but it also touches on trust and when to let go. I’m sorry I can’t give you a more detailed answer yet but I don’t want to spoil the plot! And thank you so much! 

MISC ASKS RELATED TO MY AU

It’s VERY important to Aurora for her parents to give their blessing, so Shadow will honor that and ask them for it. I already know how and when he’s going to do it, but I can’t spoil it for you yet! 😉

They’ve had three litters. I headcanon that back in the day hedgehogs used to have litters (2 or more kids) all the time but that became less and less common in modern day. But I also headcanon that as the Ultimate Lifeform, Shadow was engineered to be able to… multiply effectively. So even though they’ve only been pregnant 3 times, they keep having triplets or twins. 

I do consider the First Kiss comic canon to my AU. But it happened a while before My Gal, maybe like a year or so before. Give them time to stew on that kiss hehehe

They just wanted to make a life change. The stars just happened to align at the same time haha

All the kids’ names are supposed to be based on their personalities or powers. Most Sonic characters are named that way, so I don’t know if it’s canon for Mobian parents to sense what their kid’s powers will be or not. Aurora has dreams that sometimes give her premonitions so she had inklings to what their kids might be like so she and Shadow could brainstorm ideas based on that. Also a lot of their names are outer-space-related or at least outer-space-adjacent and that was because Shadow’s a space man lol So he had influence in that. 

Sonic wants all his descendants named Sonic II so he’s no help lol.

There are 3 litters. The first litter has the triplets Piper, Zane and Nova. The second litter was born almost a year and a half later and has the twins Aster and Blitz. The third litter was immediately after and that has the triplets Cinder, Diamond and Boon. All this information is listed in their character reference post. 

In the beginning the family mostly just stuck to ordering online and getting home deliveries lol. But if they do have to do a grocery store run it’s a full family event. The kids all ride on Shadow (see this post). Their house has two fridges to accommodate for all the mouths to feed!

Their life certainly isn’t boring anymore 😂 It’s exhausting but they’re happy (also there are 8 kids haha!)

Aurora definitely would have asked him about this, but at least in my stories Sonic became an orphan at a young age and I don’t have him with any siblings. 

I’ve had another person ask me who I picture Sonic’s parents as and I do plan on drawing a reference of them, but they’ll be unique to my stories. They won’t be from any other Sonic media. 

I don’t draw Aleena, Manic and Sonia because of a couple reasons. I never watched Sonic Underground so I don’t have the allegiance/nostalgia that a lot of people have to that show. Also for my own preference, I don’t like the idea of Sonic being born to royalty. It doesn’t suit him, in my opinion. That doesn’t mean I don’t respect people who have that as a part of their canon and it doesn’t mean I have any bad feelings towards the Underground characters. I just don’t draw them. I grew up on the games and later Sonic X and Sonic Boom so my stories revolve around what I know. 

It’s funny that you mention that ship because I only just learned about it from Starrjoy’s P!AU comic. Again I didn’t watch Sonic Underground so I don’t know who Bernadette is, but sure I’m down for Sonic having two moms. Families come in all shapes and sizes, so as long as they’re a loving parent or parents then I support it. 

They love all their grandkids and they love spending time with them, but I think in their older age Sonic and Amy go off on more adventures again. They never stopped adventuring, but they settled down a bit while raising Aurora. Now they’re relishing a second wind and they’re frequently going on worldly explorations.  

But they always make sure to attend any events the kids are involved with and are always home on Sundays for family dinner. Sunday night is dinner at Grandma and Grandpa’s! <— I have them always having dinner at their house on Sundays even before Aurora and Shadow have kids

To be honest, I never felt like they needed more. I had a comic where they discussed it hypothetically, but they’re content with just having the one kid. (Don’t worry, just because they’re not having kids does NOT mean they aren’t… active 😈 They’re very VERY much so!). I am okay with fan stories where people give Aurora siblings and there’s a fic I’m reading right now that involves Sonic and Amy having a whoopsie baby way late in life and adult Aurora is having to deal with that and I love it lol. But just for my own writing, it’s a single-child household.

my OCs sprites & suspect lineups!

(SPOILERS FOR GAME 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5)

Faye is the girlfriend of Duncan, and is a carpenter in white peaks! She grew up in Rhyne Canyon, so she tends to wear clothes made for warm weather. Her daughter is Cosette, a more quiet girl. Faye n Cosette met Duncan due to the fact Cosette was the little girl he saved. When he was in the hospital, recovering after being shot in the spine, Faye and Cosette constantly visited him, thanking him for saving the both of them. Soon, when Duncan left the hospital, Faye visited him a lot more, which lead to them getting feelings for each other - and lead them to getting in a relationship. The two of them were disheartened when they discovered Duncan was a serial killer, Faye never stopped talking to him though, even if what he did hurt the two so bad.

Here is Aliah Khan, an Arrernte-Aboriginal woman from Australia. She went over the the Concordia Flying Squad originally for training, until she felt a certain connection to someone - Diego Del Lobo. Though, sadly, she could not properly be with him, as she was stuck in a loveless marriage. Though, with the time she got with Diego, their relationship grew to be strong. That was - until he killed Charlie. In ways, she understood why he did what he did, there was no choice on his part. But, the fact he killed someone they both were close to left cracks in their dynamic. And it didn’t help she had to return back to Australia. Before she left, Diego told her to look through his stuff, to where she found a necklace and a notebook. Telling her to keep it, Diego wished her better times in Australia, and that he hoped she’d write to him. Aliah treasured that notebook - which was full of love notes to her, from Diego - and the necklace, passing the jewellery down generations to keep it - and really, their love, safe and strong.

Brutus & Apollo are the descendants of Aliah, Angel being an adopted brother in their family. Brutus is the leader of the group, and was a detective for Grimsburough, Pacific Bay and the Bureau before making his own police department in his home country, Australia. His best friend, adopted brother and co-worker, Angel, is a loud, party-filled kinda guy. He loves scene music and just being chaotic. Apollo is similar, a care-free man who loves a good swim and a good game of soccer. And AFL. And any sport you can think of, really. Brutus is practically a polar opposite compared to these two social butterflies, he’s practically a hermit, who sucks at social situations. Though, this is made up by his pure smarts and strength. But that doesn’t stop him from being a blunt, awkward man who swears half of the time he speaks. (Also, Brutus has Aliah’s necklace, he just keeps it hidden underneath his shirt.)

Cecilia Serafina Marconi is Ginger and Tony’s child, born in 2009, she is a more quiet child. Blunt like her father, she doesn’t really have a lot of friends. But, she does have Astrid, her absolute best friend. Astrid is a year older than her, and was originally living with her grandmother, Margaret Littlewood before the events of Dog eat Dog happened. Instead of a dog show though, it was a beauty pageant for children. (Yes, that absolutely makes the case more devastating. :) ) Astrid ended up getting adopted by David Jones, as her parents were dead long before her actual case. 5 years later, she ended up being the loud, comforting friend for Cecilia. They both are inseparable - to the dismay of Tony and David - and always want the other to be there with them even for the most random situations.  If you all have any questions or want to know more about them, ask away! :D

TUFF UPDATE 7/13/23

A Developer Soldier Writing Home From The Trenches

It's been a while. And let me tell you- I HAVE MISSED YOU.

I can also say that this point in game dev, I am not the person I started out as. I definitely have been through much more than I or anyone else anticipated getting into game development and design. I am forever grateful for the fellow devs and peers that have been supportive of me along the way, as well as each and every fan who believes in my ability and has stuck with me. You guys have been my saving grace in this.

So where have I been?

I decided (for the last time) to join the Amare Game Festival. I figured I could shell out a small lore game for The Closet Door called Lake of Reflection in a month- why not?

Because game jams aren't for everyone. I spent the month burning myself out and still not being done with the game when the festival ended. (Mind you I loved the jam and you should check out the Amare Game Festival Entries!) But I didn't want to give up on the game. A cast of amazing VAs and a budding background artist helped me bring it to life! Not to mention help from fellow devs that lent me their talents when I inevitably got stuck with programming. I did hit a major burnout. And cooldown time where anxiety of release made every milestone more stressful than enjoyable.

Again, thanks to everyone around me lending me their confidence, I was able to finish and release Lake of Reflection today! It's a fairly small VN/IF hybrid game in comparison to TCD, only claiming 45k words, 6 CGs, 8 sprites and 5-6 endings. But Lake of Reflection boasts a lot of love and that means the world to me.

This story ties into The Closet Door and hopefully for those who play both games, they'll find it a delightful addition to the worldbuilding of TCD. However, Lake of Reflection is also a stand alone project and hopefully will warm the hearts of those who play it of its own merit. 💗

But game dev doesn't stop at this first release! Earlier this year I experienced an event that really made me recognize how childhood trauma impacts us. Because I write about childhood trauma in TCD, it really made me revisit the script. I've made some what I feel are necessary changes. And I think the new build I'm doing for TCD will be better for it.

I'm back into development for TCD now, so I will be doubling down on the grind.

But there's so much more going on!

And most of it requires more time to address. And you know what that means! Yesss, it's time Tuff Mallow returned to Tumblr and social media. I have a lot to share with you:

More Pokemon per Pokemon!!

With the release of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, and a few of the new 'mons, I've decided to go through the pokedex and find out just how many Pokemon are actually MULTIPLE Pokemon disguised as one. I did not count forms that are actually two Pokemon combined, such as Necrozma Dawn/ Dusk wings or Calyrex with its steed, nor the gen 8 fossil Pokemon, which are each two halves of different ancient Pokemon slapped together.

First up, one of the originals: Dugtrio. Literally three Digletts. Now, it's entirely possible that's it's three heads on one body which we never see- but it's still three heads. Which is enough for me to call it three Pokemon per Pokemon.

Similarly, and yet not quite the same, we have Magneton. It's three Magnemite stuck together. There is at least one piece of Pokemon media (the original Pokemon Snap) that shows three Magnemite evolving by combining into one Magneton. The most literal three Pokemon per Pokemon.

Slowbro. "But Nyx," you might be saying, "I thought you weren't counting Pokemon forms that are two different Pokemon combined?" But consider this: This is my list, deal with it. Slowpoke + Shellder = Slowbro. I *think* (and I might be misremembering) there's an episode of the anime where a Slowbro devolves into Slowpoke when the Shellder detaches?? Don't quote me on this I've been awake since 8:30 last night

Doduo. Two heads, one body, I'm counting it.

Dodrio. Same deal, plus another head!

Exeggcute! They can separate from each other! It happened in a short before a movie, the second one I think, and they stole Togepi to pretend they had enough of each other until the other one got found! It's literally six Pokemon!!!

Exeggutor is kinda. I don't think it can separate anymore, but it's clearly all the Exeggcute stuck to a tree trunk.

Weezing is two Pokemon, but according to the dex, sometimes it's three! Never in-game though.

Kangaskhan has a baby! That baby can fight! What!!

Slowking is the same deal as Slowbro, but the Shellder bit its head instead of it's tail (or arm, in Galar).

Girafarig has two brains. This is canon. (Ftr, Wobbuffet does not. It is *heavily implied* that the tail is its actual body or brain or whatever, but it's not outright stated to be the case.)

Mantine, but only in gens 2&3 and in Home, where its sprite has a Remoraid attached.

Metang is two Beldum fussed together, and

Metagross is two Metang, ergo four Beldum.

Combee is three bees! I love them!!

Vespiquen is said to use its honeycomb abdomen skirt thing as a nest for baby Combee, but this isn't depicted in any in-game sprites. Still, more Pokemon per Pokemon.

Cherubi? Kind of?? It has a second head, but unlike Girafarig, that head doesn't have a second brain, and it loses it shortly before evolution. I'm gonna count it anyway.

Spiritomb is 108 souls trapped in a rock. Are they Pokemon souls? People souls? Do 108 people souls trapped in a rock count as 108 Pokemon per Pokemon???

Magnezone is a Magneton that got bigger. It's still three Magnemite per Magnezone.

Vanilluxe is another "two of its pre-evolutions stuck together" 'mon. Two Vanillish, one Vanilluxe. They melted and refroze together, so presumably they can melt apart?

Klink is two Klink per Klink, but it's canon that once they combine, they cannot separate.

Klang- one of the Klink got bigger!

Klinklang gains two more gears, but only the original two are sentient.

Zweilous has two heads, and they hate each other. So much so that one of the heads loses sentience upon evolution. Or maybe they just merged? Either way, Hydreigon only has one brain among its three heads.

While you were becoming a fully formed human adult, I was studying Doublade. Which is two distinct swords. However, I don't think Aegislash retains dual-sentience.

Binacle is two mons in a rock, but unlike Spiritomb we don't have to delve into philosophy about it. They're two physical and distinct entities, either of which can leave the rock to find a new partner.

Barbaracle is just a bigger rock, so the Binacles are seven roommates instead of two.

There are 50 Zygarde cells and 5 Zygarde cores (at least in Sun and Moon), which makes a 100% form Zygarde 55 Zygarde per Zygarde.

Wishiwashi school form is approximately 248 Wishiwashi, according to this person who did the math. Thank you, Goatman879.

I decided to follow Goatman879's example to calculate how many Meltan make up a Melmetal. Per the lore, it's just one Meltan that absorbed it's group (and then when it dies it splits into a bunch of Meltan again, though it's unclear if they're ontologically the same Meltan as before). Per the math, one Melmetal is approximately 100 Meltan.

Cramorant can pick up an Arrokuda or a Pikachu when it surfs or dives, so that's occasionally two Pokemon per Pokemon.

Now for the mon that set this off! It's not new as of Scarlet and Violet- this mon was introduced in Sword and Shield. It's Falinks! Six Pokemon per Pokemon!!

Drakloak carries a Dreepy with it.

Dragapult carries two!!

Now onto Scarlet and Violet spoilers, though if you've seen any of the pre-release material, you might already know about Farigiraf. I have no idea how to pronounce that! But I do know it still has two brains!!

Wugtrio, the not-a-regional-variant of Dugtrio. Though it has the same issue- is it three heads on one unseen body? The dex says no, it's three separate bodies. Not sure I believe it yet.

Tandemaus is the first multiple Pokemon per Pokemon I caught in Scarlet. It's two mice holding hands!

Then it evolves, by which I mean they procreate. Possibly. Now there's four mice, two of which are smaller and baby sized. (Or three mice with one baby size, but you have a random 1 in 25 chance of getting that form.) But it's """unclear""" what the relationship between the three/ four of them is? Or where the tiny one(s) come from??? The little one(s) just "appeared" one day????

Extra spoilers for this last one!! There are special Pokemon that appear to be ancient relatives of modern mons, that somehow survived to the present day? Including a mon known as Sandy Shocks, an Electric/Ground relative of Magneton. It's unclear if this Pokemon evolved from ancient Magnemite relatives, and is therefore also three Pokemon per Pokemon, but it certainly looks like it.

I've been playing rejuv since the ~victini~ days (read: a long ass time) (on the reborn forum I'm sparsyle). I feel like, in many ways, I've grown up with the game (I started it when I was a baby teenager). It's been a comfort through some difficult times, and continues to be to this day. The strength of the game, what sets it apart from so many other fangames, is its incredible characters and story--they keep me coming back, over and over.

I hadn't played in about a year, so when 13.5 came out I decided to start a new save file. I just wanted to say... I'm... absolutely in awe. You guys put so so much love into this. The early game is the best it has ever been, by FAR. So much of the story is falling into place. You brought all of the energy, the humor, the drama, the chaos, that makes the late game so incredible to the start. And the IMPROVEMENTS! Oh my GODDDD!! THE MAPS!!!!! SO MUCH TO EXPLORE!! SO NATURAL AND WINDING!! The quality of LIFE!! LUXURIOUS!! The shiny icon sprites! The custom eggs! Passwords! THE QUEST SYSTEM! THE LEGACY SPRITES! And don't get me started on the MUSIC!!!! SO atmospheric, stunning, gorgeous!!! You kept all the best classics and wrote some stunning new compositions!! AND THE NEW ART!! GIRL YOU'VE BEEN BUSY!! Melia's picnic!! Zetta and the purse!! Keta vs Shadow Mewtwo!! They are not only visually breathtaking but bring so much more emotion to these scenes. And, in general, genuinely, replaying this game with version 13.5... has made me emotional. I am so, so in awe of how far you guys have come over the years, how much care and attention to detail you continue work into this project. This game feels like home. I am so proud to be a fan of rejuvenation. Version 13.5 is truly a gift to the community. That's all I'm here to say. 13.5 has gone over and above and out of the stratosphere of my expectations. So thank you, and thank you to everyone on the dev team. This game is art.

It's really been a labor of love that has spanned over nearly a decade, and I'm so so happy to hear that it's made such an impression on people who have been around for this long. I'm glad we've been able to give you a game that you can take comfort and find happiness in.
