PRINCESS ARIEL: specifically the halle bailey iteration for the tropical water vibes, that absolutely gorgeous tail and despite what certain folks have to say, mermaids are allowed to be black and have been in mythology forever because look at arion's mother. much like ariel, the son of olokun loved his family but never completely felt like he belonged amongst them. he was called weird and feeling alienated for not always wanting the 'traditional' life that his father and grandparents had in line for him. his interests were always beyond the islands where he was conceived and raised. he's very much grateful, regardless of the dangers, that he's allowed to travel and explore the world and even. KATARA: waterbending is the best bending, i don't care what anyone says and this queen has shown us why. obviously as the son of a sea deity, hydrokinesis hopefully would be somewhere in his arsenal and seeing how waterbending is a fighting style all it's own, it's a neat way to deal with enemies physically and at a distance. katara is able to use water to heal, which makes sense since it is the element that brings life. olokun is associated with health, so some healing abilities through water would be neato to align with that concept. AQUAMAN: because communicating with and commanding or rather 'persuading/influencing' marine life seems like a neat addition to his powerset. Also fighting with a trident. chef's kiss. RAIN: the mortal kombat ninja in purple. his aesthetic meshes will with arion's. specifically the mk1 version's fighting style of a ninja utilizing a staff along with his hydrokinesis; since arion uses a trident as his polearm and also commands water, while also being acrobatic and nimble in his physical hand-to-hand combat. also rain's whole regal vibe aligns with arion's background of coming from a wealthy family and olokun's association with wealth and prosperity. KALDUR'AHM/AQUALAD: katara was a beast in water manipulation, kaldur takes it a step further using actual atlantean magic to create weapons and tools out of water. but another solid inspiration kaldur is for arion is that kaldur grew up a normal person with no idea of his non-human heritage and he also dealing with his sexuality. kaldur aligns with arion coming to terms with his half sea god heritage after living as a mundane human and growing comfortable with his sexuality among a heavily homophobic culture. MOANA: raised on an island. he's a boy who loves the sea it calls him. he has longed to travel and explore. he's besties with polynesian demigods. all he's really missing is a mentally challenged chicken.

Sexuality Headcanon: okay so i vacillate wildly between two options because sometimes katara is the kind of heterosexual that makes me uncomfortable and sometimes she is the kind of homophobic that i find comforting. either way, she’s straight.

Gender Headcanon: she’s a cis girl but she 100% knows gender is fake as hell

A NOTP I have with said character: katara/jet and z*tara. jet’s nasty. z*tara makes me uncomfortable on a whole host of levels but the main one is this: i am the same age as zuko. katara is younger than my younger brother. there is no way in hell that i as a seventeen year old would Ever feel comfortable dating a fourteen year old. that’s creepy as hell.

A random headcanon: when she was a little kid, she used to ‘help’ kya make this special tea. after the war, she asks iroh about it and they go on a life-changing field trip for tea. they do eventually find it and katara teaches iroh how to make it properly. after a while, he starts offering it in the jasmine dragon and katara comes to visit as much as possible.

General Opinion over said character: she deserves better than how fandom treats her. idek where the whiny crybaby stereotype comes from considering basically every time she’s mad she tries to kill men? she’s an icon and she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. also, i feel like her flaws are completely misrepresented?? she’s super impulsive and yeah she’s emotional but she’s emotional and a furious way not an upset way? like she cries like twice?? also she’s Not the parent of the group lmao. she doesn’t have the patience nor does she have the organisation skills. i love her but sokka’s the only reason they’re alive.

16 year old Katara: Thoughts

I find it really interesting that the same shippers who reduce her to trophy wife or homophobic suddenly care about Katara’s character and her age. Like, I’m not stoked about the age difference, but Katara always acted older than anyone in the gang (save Zuko), so aging her up won’t change much.

If anything, it gives her more power because she would be next in line as chief, and Katara deserves respect like the queen she is. No one is talking about the potential positivity of this change. The only major thing that really changes anything is Kataang, and even then, she worth more than being a participant in a relationship.

People are saying she’ll be “reduced to the mom friend role.” She already was in certain parts of the fandom. She’s been reduced to “mom friend” instead of “leader” for years. Her age change can be used to emphasize her leadership role, not diminish it.

I’m not saying I’m excited about this development- I’m not- or that I even think Zutara will be canon. I just think it says a lot when it comes to age changes, the only one discussed is Katara and her relationships rather than Sokka or Aang and how it impacts theirs. In reality, it doesn’t really change her role all that much. Again I don’t like it, but it’s overblown.

But hey, maybe a brown girl gaining power is just threatening to some of y’all, and others probably just didn’t think of it in those terms.

The earth kingdom leaves its poor to rot and die, they allow lazy and competent bigots be their kings and queens who are easily controlled by underhanded cowards like Long Feng and they killed our cousin and turned our uncle and you. They are beyond saving and deserve to die.”

Zuko: “Believe it or not Azula, not everyone in the other nations agree to their standards. My friend Katara, fought against the water tribe’s misogyny and revolutionized unisex bending teachings. Her brother, Sokka was once misogynistic but changed his ways. Ever since Kuei found out about Long Feng’s deception, he traveled the world, he learned to fight and studied psychology so that no one can manipulate him again. According to Aang, there was no military and it was all ambush, but Aang has come to learn that the nomads ways are more complicated then he once viewed.”

Azula: “He’s lying. You’re lying.”

Zuko: “Come one, you seen me lie before and saw right through it. Look me in the eye and tell me that what I’m saying is not true.”

Azula looked deep into Zuko’s eyes, she’s unnerved that Zuko really isn’t being deceitful.

Zuko: “Only through the avatar and your spiritual connection to him can you reach your true potential.”

Azula: “Get out! GET OUT!”

Zuko bowed and complied. His words began haunting Azula to no end.

yue gives suki rocks she finds on all their travels and suki lines them up on their mantle around the pictures of them in increasingly weird locations 

suki loves guarding yue’s meetings bc she gets to watch her absolutely rip a new one into misogynistic old men and it never fails to bring her joy

Katara as Lindsay Lohan's character, aka the new interloper who in this version sees through Azula immediately, and is eagerly on the plan to play dumb and dethrone Azula, but gets too carried away in the act of being Queen Bee

Suki as Janis, except in this rendition is a cool ex-jock with slight skater girl / weed lesbian vibes who was best friends with Azula when they were on the girls hockey team in middle school, but in a moment of sexuality crisis, Azula accused Suki of being a lesbian (i mean, she was right, but uh, not cool)

in a rendition of mean girls which is 70% less homophobic and 100% more gay and ends with Suki and Katara making out

"Katara is homophobic" is racist attacks to Katara. Fandom attack her all the time while Fire Nation girls like Azula is a whole imperialist light skinned girl but fandom praise her or headcanon her as "lesbian queen".

Couldn’t have put it better anon. It’s also so disturbing I’ve realised how many people joke about her being homophobic when her daughter Kya is canonically a lesbian.

My personal hc for Katara is that she’s bi but I have seen some very good queer headcanons for her being a lesbian, ace, trans etc which I fully support all of!
