opening with the scene within which i have built a home and become a permanent resident. right here in the moment rashmand smiles stupidly and louis slonks (🤭) every last drop of his blood. how anyone thinks they’re boring idk idk idk
Tumblr media
they are being clear here that this isn’t consumption for the sake of sustenance. this is bloodletting as sex play and as power play. Danny is not having dinner. so its clear that this isn’t feeding as a meal but it is feeding as sexual exhibition at its most delicious. Danny is reading about claudia’s violent acts via the written recording of her victim’s last words while loumand basically vampire fuck at the other end of the table. this is also setting up the sexual violence to come for claudia and also for louis.
i think it is intentional that louis is the one feeding from armand for several reasons. one being because of what lestat does to him, which we see later on. this is power play for louis in a setting where he has voluntarily and possibly in some aspects dubiously relinquished control over to his lover armand. also bc of the connection between daniel and armand. they are revealing rashid as armand slowly here and his and louis’ involvement with daniel in the past. Daniel isn’t dumb. they know he can figure out the inconsistencies of louis drinking from armand and louis drinking from damek. this leads to daniels curiosity about how armand tastes like and his weight and louis puts daniel’s hidden attraction out on display against his wishes to throw him off. and daniel orders rashid around to take back some power.
i also think it’s a call back to the power dynamic of their first meeting. louis has power over daniel, and it seems he’s the one in control of the entire situation but then he checks in with armand before moving forward. in this moment in the present dubai 2020 setting louis has power over daniel (regardless of him no longer being that naive young man) and he plays the role of the one with the power over rashid, but the power he is receiving is from armands 500+ year old blood that he is offering to louis as the character he is playing. lord take me.
i think it’s interesting that daniel is feasting on claudia’s private memories but objects to louis reading and exposing his personal thoughts. even tho louis has shown time and again that he does that and would do it again. choices/consent is the big issue in this episode.
Daniel: man with green vest: please no. man with fat fingers: please stop. window washer: i can’t die like this. woman with purple shoes: please. boy with inner tube and dog: let my dog live. please no. please stop. stop. oh here’s a good one—man in the last row of The Son of Sheik picture show: You said you had cigarettes.
this is the first recounts we hear him read from claudia’s journal—claudia, who did not get a say in whether her voice and story be used by louis, armand and daniel in this way. He reads this and it’s clear that he [daniel] hadn’t actually consented to being the voyeur of loumand’s sex play given his visible discomfort/agitation. He continues anyways, trying his best to focus on the task at hand and not his bisexual longing for the men at the other end of the table bc even with everything he is reading and witnessing he is still attracted to them in all their insanity and monstrosity.
im interested in the fact that he pointedly reads out (“here’s a good one”) the misleading nature of the last one. “You said you had cigarettes.” i think it speaks to the fact that daniel came here to dubai for a supposed second interview and is slowly but surely realizing he is getting something else entirely. he continues “School teacher, guard your heart. i’m trying to think of something more fucked up than this.” he could be just talking about what claudia has written, but i think it’s also the fact that this is the section of his reading that loumand have chosen to be overtly sexual in front of him for as he reads. all this and he doesn’t even know yet of rashid being armand and his role in claudia’s death, though i’m sure he’s having suspicions of everything by now. also that louis, with being faced with the piece of claudia he doesn’t like to acknowledge, the monstrosity of her vampire nature, focuses of drinking from armand the man who killed his beloved daughter (something he said about “i run to the bottle” etc. etc). it does in fact get more fucked up danny.
and when armand implies that daniel is no better by revealing the danger it poses on louis and exposing louis’ suicidality without his permission (“he lives to share these opinions even when they are not solicited”) and revealing he doesn’t even want this book to happen, louis fights back by leaning into his power over daniel and exposing his thoughts about armand, and continues to, even when danny makes it clear his thoughts were not being voluntarily shared—that he did not want louis in his mind at all. he even interrupts rashmand in the middle of telling daniel he wouldn’t let him near his neck to offer up more information abt rashid (much to armands annoyance) that clearly isn’t even true after reading daniel’s mind again when daniel just explicitly told him not to. and when louis does that daniel fights back by leaning into his perceived power over rashid—louis’ servant—by demanding more of something to drink without even looking at him. and at this armand picks up his lil ipad and leaves without even picking up daniel’s glass, being the one who is actually the most powerful in the room. this is crazy. this is actually insane.
all this and armand is the one who killed claudia!!!! the only one who doesn’t get to fight back against her agency being taken from her in this scene!!! i’m going to fucking throw up. who is bored with them!? they are literally putting on thee insane sexy bdsm emo freaks show like…
“ The Son of Sheik” also alludes to the upcoming sexual assault btw. It’s a sequel to “The Sheik” where the protagonist is the son of the sheik in the first film who falls in love with a traveling dancer Yasmine. He rapes her out of retaliation for having been kidnapped and later whipped, which he believes to be her fault bc she is falsely accused of it. like in this episode and like claudia, yasmine’s rape is strongly implied in the movie with the use of pointed language and a scene cut.
this scene closes out with daniel pointing out he can’t get to accurate statistics of claudia’s murders to corroborate her accounts whether he thinks its more or less than what she recounts im unsure. louis points out that he wouldn’t be able to get an accurate account anyways bc of their disposal practices and how cities tend to downplay the dangers within them. daniel wanting all the details and louis making it clear he will have to accept that he can’t always have all the details will be a point of contention later on as we know.

"But killing [insert character's name who murdered a loved one] won't bring them back."
That's the point. The character who lost someone knows that. The person they love was killed and because the loved one is no longer living, neither should the killer. The pain the murdered person felt in their final moments needs to be given it to the murderer. The killer may not have cared for the person's life but the character does and they will bring the killer the wrath of a thousand suns to show that.

"Son Of Nyx" / "Inferno" theory !!
Although the title of "Son Of Nyx" is already very fitting for circle six (Heresy - a belief opposed to mainly christian beliefs) with Hozier calling (i assume) himself the son of the goddess of night, whereas God is the giver of light, I do have another theory in terms of "Inferno" itself.
Before Dante gets to circle six, he is stuck outside the gates of the City of Dis (a walled-off area of Inferno separating circles 1-5 from 6-9). There is a long section where, as Virgil (his guide) attempts to calm him, Dante stews in a fear that he may never be able to leave Hell. After panicking, he feels a presence and looks to see an angel approaching to open the gates of the City for Dante and Virgil so they can continue their journey.
This part of "Inferno" feels very represented in "Son of Nyx", with the first half of the song being melancholic piano and then growing into a full orchestra in the second half. It mirrors the appearance of the angel.
I think this is also representative of the narrative of the album as a whole:
We know that the album is a walk through of a breakup told in terms of the circles of Hell. We also know that "Son Of Nyx" is the crossover song to the second and darker half of the album where the relationship seems to completely fall apart.
Hozier compares the relationship itself to Inferno, calling it dark (the main theme and aspect of Inferno) many times. The last song on the album mirrors Dante and Virgil leaving Inferno, as Hozier himself confirms the relationship is over ("And I am never going back again.") Hozier seems describe leaving Inferno, therefore leaving this relationship, as painful but also a relief. (Feeling the light again, "one bright morning comes", but knowing it also means the darkness, his relationship, is gone.)
How this links into "Son Of Nyx" is that, despite the appearance of the angel in the City of Dis, Dante feels as though all divinity is lost throughout Inferno. In fact, the angel at this mid-point of Inferno is the only thing from Heaven to enter Inferno whilst Dante is there. It is the only light he gets whilst being down there, since Inferno is notably dark and black.
Since "Son Of Nyx" leads us into the final breaking of the relationship Hozier is singing about, I think we can see the second half of the song (the reference to the angel) as, although being incredibly pained by the ending of this relationship (as shown in the first half of the instrumental), Hozier also sees it as a hope to move onto something lighter - the same way Dante's confidence and hope is reinstalled by the angel.
Just a theory and a guess since I think "Son Of Nyx" is obviously one of the more vague songs on the album. Y'know, having no words except "who we are" and "she always wins" so... yes! I hope my vigorous readings of "Inferno" might help us understand the song a little more lmao

Yes, aesthetic is important
when it comes to pagan & witchy holidays! They are spiritual times so people tend to dismiss concerns of aesthetic, saying that decoration and such practices are unnecessary. Of course, during holidays, the focus is to be put on the actual activities and celebrations. However, the spiritual dimension of a holiday calls for a particular mindset. It’s easy to say “Imbolc time is meant for you to reflect!”, or “Samhain is about letting go of unnecessary things!”, but I notice people tend to forget the importance of surrounding yourself with such a mindset. A pagan/witch coud very well just write what they want to let go of on a piece of paper, then burn it and go back to doing whatever it is they do every day. However, if they change things around them in accordance with the holiday, by decorating, for example, they will subconsciously keep in mind the spirit that comes with this particular turning of the wheel. My point is thus: though it may seem superficial and useless, I believe the aesthetic of a holiday is crucial to pagan/witchy mindset. Even if it doesn’t seem like much, never hesitate to put holiday music on, to decorate your home, or to dress a certain way. Don’t worry: aesthetics are part of being pagan/witchy and they do not make you fake, or superficial. There is no shame to be had in enjoying aesthetics, as they are simply ways for you to connect with a holiday’s spirit. Moreover, they are sometimes easier than organizing an activity or celebration and are more discreet ways for closeted pagans/witches to celebrate.

So I have many thoughts about Les Mis (1998), but for now, I’d like to discuss one specific thing. (Disclaimer: I have no problem with people enjoying this movie. I wouldn’t be putting effort into analyzing it if I didn’t somewhat enjoy it myself.)
This movie’s rendition of Fantine’s arrest is… interesting. At first glance, there’s not much wrong with it. But after watching it a few times, I think I figured out what was so strange about it. To put it plainly, the original power shift from the book is nowhere to be found. There is still a power shift, but it’s different. It still starts with Javert in control and ends with Valjean shifting that control over to himself. But because of the drastic mischaracterization of Valjean and slightly less absurd changes to Javert’s character, the dynamic has an odd effect.
In the book, there is specific series of events that show this shift. Javert asserts his authority as a policeman, Valjean challenges him, Javert argues, Valjean tries a moral/ethical approach, Javert still argues, Valjean asserts his authority as the mayor, Javert tries a moral approach, Valjean puts an end to the argument. The movie follows this pretty closely, but misses one part. Javert does not resort to moral arguments in the way he does in the book. Instead, he continues talking as if he still has control. He doesn’t sense that his authority has truly been undermined until Valjean pretty plainly tells him to gtfo. The 1978 movie actually does this part of the scene better. In that version, Valjean proves his point by quoting regulations and whatnot and Javert understands that this is a major roadblock for him. He is not one to argue with any of his superiors, so the fact that he continues to protest is interesting. 1998 Javert just keeps arguing like Valjean hasn’t said anything of importance. His tone doesn’t shift, his tactics barely change, he has basically ignored the fact that he has been rendered powerless.
As for Valjean, my criticism of him is quite straightforward. He does not hesitate to be stern. His softer side is so underemphasized beforehand that the fact we see him truly get angry about something has very little impact. His kindness and generosity is such a crucial part of his character, he’s barely recognizable without it. Before this scene, we have already seen 1998 Valjean behave uncharacteristically, so why should we believe that it is unusual for him to shout at someone, even someone such as Javert.
I think the way this scene is handled is indicative of a larger problem with this movie. They are chasing interpersonal conflicts to the point that they ignore some of the larger themes of Les Mis. For example, Javert doesn’t argue with authority because he sees authority as perfectly just. But he would argue with it if he was the unruly, obsessive cop this movie portrays him as.

srry if this is confusing in advance and this is smthn im thinking abt
but ive been around for abt a year and a half and i have had little to no interaction with source outside of the fandom
not bc i dont want to, just never had a chance
its not like im HIDDEN and i talk to a lot of other systems, but that just means i talk to a lot of ppl outside of my source like sonic the hedgehog or tim drake or dave strider or hell even non-introjects and some singlets too
i miss my brothers and home a lot and i also miss what i was capable of doing source wise (yk like parkouring across rooftops or PORTALLING? good times) but i also have things here and now that i care about
like im waiting for season 2 of school spirits, i have a bag of pistachios hidden. somewhere and a relationship?? ish?? sorta??? and a cat everyone in the system loves or this creek near our apartment tht i need to finish exploring
i think theres some introjects where TOO MUCH of their interaction has been limited to source stuff and theyre usually p bummed which is fair its hard to let go of everything that, to you, you will never get back
and a question ive been thinking a lot abt is if id choose to be myself, in my source from my source, outside of our body and outside of our system or to stay with what i have and i dont think id trade being who i am now for anything tbh
ig what im trying to get at is try to live ur life and do what you want outside of JUST source things, and try to enjoy wht u have

The room was holding it's breath as Shrub came to.
She was expecting to wake up in pain.
It was incredibly off putting when that didn't happen.
Instead she felt...kind of numb. She still felt very weak, like she could barely think, like she can barely move, but she felt... okay.
She opens her eyes, looking around at her surroundings. She sees the mushroom first, and part of her feels comforted. And then she sees the two watching her, clearly anxious.
She quickly looks away, finding her voice enough to mutter ".. what're you lookin at..."
The two sigh, and Gem scribbles in her book.
"Well....we....found you...hurt...and got you here... safe..." Katherine mumbles
The gnome slowly curls in on herself, but it was clear that something was still just...off with her by the way she moved. It was crystal clear that she was most definitely still being affected by Xornoth in many ways.
"Doesn't look very safe. Looks more like I'm a prisoner." She tries to growl out, but it was more just raspy and quiet.
"Well....." Katherine looks down
Shrub rolls her eyes "Thought so." She turns away, realizing that those small movements were taking a much bigger amount of energy than normal.
"..'m gonna kill him.." she mutters angrily to herself, and Katherine frowns
"What? What happened?"
The gnome turns and glares, weakly pulling up her hand to point at Gem who was still scribbling.
"Ask her." She croaks out before laying her head back against the pillow and staring into space.
Katherine turns to Gem with a confused frown. "Gem?"
"Oh...yeah...Sausage and Joey kidnapped me and Scott. Shrub was there, but let us escape."
Katherine gapes while Shrub scoffs quietly. "I only let you go to annoy them."
Gem nods "Uh huh...sure...."
The gnome opens her eyes to just glare at the wizard for a minute before going back to resting her head.
Gem turns to Katherine "Do you have that potion that helped those plants?" She asks, and Katherine searches her pockets before pulling it out.
Gem takes it and does some testing with it. "I don't think this will work on her, but maybe if we can make a stronger one..."
They hear shrub make some noises of disagreement, realizing what they were trying to do.
Gem ignores the sounds, turning and mixing a bunch of ingredients together, while Katherine goes to Shrub.
"Shrub.... we're gonna try to fix you..." She explains gently, while shrub shakes her head.
"I don't need your damn help.." she mutters "I'm not interested in anything you're going to try to do to me."
Katherine frowns "Well ...Gem says that Xornoth has a lot of influence on you. Don't you want to think for yourself?"
"I can think for myself thank you very much." She grumbled. "I don't need any help with that."
"I don't think you can..." Katherine admits, getting a little annoyed at how stubborn she was being. "I think you believe you can think for yourself, but that's just the corruption telling you that. You know deep down you can't really think for yourself. You're forced to do what it tells you."
Gem looks up, surprised. Shrub was left speechless.
But Katherine wasn't done. "I know you're tired of being used as a puppet. I know there's good in your heart. I know there's a real Shrub there, a Shrub that's kind, caring, and funny. And we're going to do anything to bring that Shrub back. Because you don't deserve to be a puppet for the demon."
The two stare at her in shock, and then Katherine realizes and shrugs "Well, I hope so." She mumbles, and her words were so powerful that shrub doesn't fight back when Gem offers her a bottle
She drinks the liquid and immediately feels her head spin, feels the ever present lust for blood and destruction start to fade. For a small moment her head felt empty, and for the first time in a while she smiled, from the happy moment of peace she felt. Before the moment passes out of nowhere, and the twisted thoughts continued, back to the manipulating ways from before.
The other two look at each other and nod, knowing that at least they were on the right track

(its 3 am as im writing this so apologies in advance for any wonkyness)
So this is something thats been on my mind for a while now, but I haven't figured out how to word it until now.
That is, I both do and don't get people, specifically artists, being against headcannons.
It's a bit hard to explain, but I'll do it one side of the argument at a time.
On one hand, I get it since certain artists are very particular with how they want their characters to be viewed as and thus, anything outside of that could be seen as interfering with said vision and I get it from the perspective of something like, "I had a bad experience with a fandom once and they made my character into something I wasn't happy with and hated so that's why I don't like people doing that to my characters.", which is totally fine and respectable to me, your characters are yours after all and if a group of people made them out to be something they aren't so it makes all the sense in the world to be agaisnt it as I could see it bringing back bad memories of said time.
On the other hand, I don't get it since it really feels like you don't want anyone to do anything with your characters, not even in private, so there's not really a reason to even like, be a fan of your characters in the first place, it feels really limiting and that's the other thing I don't get since I've always felt like these types of things are a great way to see your characters in a different light, one you might not have originally imagined when you first made the character and could help inspire you to do something different, let loose some and have fun with them, maybe even make some of the headcannons people have apart of the character in a way.
I know all of this rich coming from someone like me since I have an AU that's pretty much full of this stuff, but that's because I find it fun to do the stuff I talked about above as stuff like this helps breed creativity in my eyes.
Again, I get both sides of the argument, but personally? I'd rather folks just let people have fun with their characters and not feel so overprotective of them for the reasons I expressed in the "i get it" section, that's all.
(sidenote: any artists out there who see this? let me know which side you fall on and why. im not looking to change your mind, id just like to hear why)

Did Trudy name Maggie that way just because she felt it was pretty or was there deeper meaning in it for her?
Magnolia is her name because while it does feel pretty, it also fits with the vibes I got from Trudy's kids. They all have pretty classic/traditional and rich sounding names like Vincent, Lester, and I live by the headcanon that Bo's full name is Beauregard.
To me it feels like an add on to Trudy expecting more from her kids, set them up with a grand name that'd be fitting on newspapers or diplomas. Something high class to make them sound better than they actually are

I have just realized that I can do anything I want on this blog. If I want a magical girl OC based off Halloween then who’s to stop me? Even if the art is ‘bad’ if it’s something I want then why not create it? I mean. We’ve been turning D4DJ characters into jewelpets, why not make other AU’s? Other OC’s? Why not draw them???
This is overwhelming, and our brain is becoming very crowded and while I’m not sure what to do about that, I can say that we are in a place where we are happy with our writing and aspects of our art, and it is because of this blog and how people are interacting so positively with it.
What I’m trying to say is that if you ‘let go’ of (so to speak) what’s holding you back (ie a fear of failure, ‘cringe’, lack of attention, or whatever) and create something you want to, you’ll fell so much better. Probabaly overwhelmed, but happy.

frankly, the people whose kneejerk reaction to bisan asking for a global strike form the 21st-28th is to say that it takes years to organize a general strike are really unhelpful! no one is saying otherwise, but palestine will be a smoking crater if we all wait for years to do anything - bisan is asking us to do something now. Like are we only supposed to do something if we can do it perfectly??? At some point it’s a valid critique about the work that goes into social movement, and at another point I feel like some people are just trying to absolve themselves from not putting any effort into observing a week of economic inaction.
like idk! I get it, okay! People have bills to pay that don’t magically go away for a strike, we don’t have nearly enough social infrastructure in place to support people to fully stop going to work for a week. But fuck, dude! Stop immediately responding in such a defeatist way! Cut out unnecessary purchases! Try to shop local! Put more effort into promoting Palestinian voices online! Attend a protest, call a local rep, do something!
