- Techno, AKA Sanguine - his name [according to google] means, “from Old French sanguin (fem. sanguine) and directly from Latin sanguineus "of blood," also "bloody, bloodthirsty," from sanguis (genitive sanguinis) "blood" (see sanguinary). The meaning "cheerful, hopeful, vivacious, confident”. His name is actually just inspired by a quote from Maybe an elder scrolls game, something along the lines of, “when the night runs sanguine” i cannot remember i do not play elder scrolls- i think you can guess why i chose this name for him, the second part was by coincidence but i still think it fits because of his confident, almost carefree approach to conflict

- Pink. Hes half skywing half icewing, and he is very popular to outsiders because of his uniquely colored scales- some mistake him for icewing royalty because of his resemblance to a certain icewing princess [yes ery is canon in here. my ocs are part of this, your ocs are part of this, its my Au and i get to chose the Characters]. Skywings can be every color of the sunsets- purple, red, pinks, oranges, and even yellow, so yes, he gets little yellowy accents on his scales because it looks like gold

- Both tribes are known for their fashion and jewelry exports, and hes no exception. He actively visits both kingdoms [mostly favors Skywings because they specialize in gold over the silver of Icewings] to see whats new in stock. He has also gained... other things. from the Skywings, most notably their craft of fireworks. i think you can guess what hes used it for

- Very Spiky. because its cool. He looks like a girdled lizard and is very sharp. Covered in ice spikes because again, cool. Even his antlers are spiky because its sick as hell. I couldnt recommend any less trying to pet him the wrong way you will end up losing some aspect of your body one way or another

- Has the same vibes as Blaze, but opposite energy, if that makes sense. He would much rather stay at home than purposefully fight others if it means keeping his scales pristine, but if someone brings the battle to him he can and will kick their ass. Well, at least thats how it is now, back then he totally would find conflict any place he could- to the point where others would either actively avoid him, or seek him out to help them in battles

- kinda unrelated but Technodragon and Sanguine are two different dragons. There are also versions of the rest of the Dreaming Dragons... dragons, who are also just normal ass dragons outside of the restrictions of me manhandling Wof canon to try and make something that works

[ID : 2 drawings of Technoblade as a dragon, inspired by Wings of Fire. He is an Icewing and Skywing hybrid, with pink and white mottled scales and pale yellow spots and accents. He has sharp plates all over his body that resembles a girdled lizards, and spikes on his shoulders, giving him a very sharp appearance. He has long, sharp white spines on his neck, back, and tail, with curly horns that have spikes that resemble antlers. There are small tufts of fur on his chin, ears, and arms. He has wide, pig-like ears, a muzzle that resembles a snout, and short tusks that jut from the corners of his mouth, and he has dark eyes with gold pupils. He is laying on his side with his back to the viewer, propped up on his elbows as he looks back at the viewer. His eyes are narrowed with a tired, almost annoyed expression.

The second image is the similar to the first, flipped. He has a dark red cape with a fluffy lining draped around his shoulders, covering his back down to the base of his tail. He has several gold chain necklaces, one of them with 3 gold hoops dangling off of it. He has a gold band around one of his spines, along with bands around his tusks, and a band around his horns. He has several gold earrings, a chain attached to two of them, with an emerald attached to a length of chain at the end. He is wearing a gold crown with three points and a spike facing down in the middle, a pattern of symmetrical sapphires and diamonds running along the outside with a large ruby in the center, and there is a chain attached to the tip of the center spike that is draped around his horns, the other end being attached to the band around his horns. Dear readers,

One can find and do many things on our Jersey island, its rich soil housing some 107.000 inhabitants. But as it appears, the world has more to offer than multi-horned sheep, lovely beaches and close knitted communities. Today I’m once more writing from the metropolitan city of London, my journey taking me to meet some ex-inhabitants of our beloved Jersey.  

In this “Old Faces goes London”, I’ll be visiting a baker who decided to bring his infamous Jersey-rolls to the great City of London, a linguist who strives to keep Jèrriais (our territories unique Norman dialect) alive and I’ll be having a cup of tea with an exporter of Jersey’s very own apple cider. Yum!

And, as time is ticking I will now bid you all adieu. Or, to keep it in the Jèrriais realms;

‘Morning.’ Henry pressed a kiss on my cheek while he brushed past me, his hands busy with making toast while I prepped some lunch boxes. It was 6 AM on a Tuesday and, though I was far from awake, I did admit that I felt quite happy being here, in Henry’s Mews kitchen. 

In the far corner I could hear Kal hogging down some food after an even more ungodly early doggy walk - from which I thankfully had been spared - and before long the kitchen was filled with lovely scents and we were all enjoying our breakfast.

‘Sleep well?’ I said, keeping my voice down as the walls were rather thin. Henry nodded, cup of coffee hovering beneath his nose, cheeks dimpling with a tender smile. ‘Sure did. Though looks like you are STILL sleeping.’ He laughed. ‘Mmm... I’m very much enjoying this dream, thank you very much. So please, allow me.’

‘Then so I will. So what are you up to today?’ He took a hesitant sip of the far too hot drink, scrunching his nose as he nearly burned his tongue, then decided to put it down, his hands instead moving to cut into the toast, his egg all gooey perfection as it oozed out onto the plate. I could see Kal push his head on Henry’s lap, hoping that his puppy eyes were enough of a persuader to earn himself some bacon. But apparently it was just another part of their morning routine, Henry’s hand near automatically running through the Akita’s fur before returning to his breakfast, no bacon bits shared in the process.

Sweet bears. 

‘Going to have an interview with that baker in a little over an hour, then visiting that publisher followed by some work calls. You?’

‘No baker interviews unfortunately,’ He smiled. ‘Just meetings. Meetings, meetings, meetings.’ Henry shrugged, obviously not looking forward to it. ‘Oh..What do you want to do for dinner by the way?’ He inquired.

‘Eh…eat food?’ I grinned, earning an exasperated look from him. ‘Hahah..sorry..but eh..let’s just cook something at home. Shall I cook or..?’

‘Cooking as home is good, sure. And, Ali, honestly..I’m not THAT traditional. Maybe let’s just say that the first person who gets home, cooks? That seems to be more fair.’ He said simply, hogging down onto another huge bite. 

‘Very well then, my fair feminist knight.’ I winked, also cutting into my toast, my nose sniffing happily as the savoury scents drifted into my nostrils. Gosh, how nice it was to be with a man that could cook!

Still somewhat catching my breath from hurrying from meeting to meeting, I sat before one man called Charles Dunham, his golden nameplate shining proudly on his paper-filled mahogany desk. From the moment I had gotten into his office, it became clear that the old, fat cheeked man was most eager to get me on board; a good cup of coffee and some cookies were moved onto the last remaining bit of his space on his overcrowded desk and before I could even take my first sip of the welcome drink, the offer was already on the table.

‘Simply said; we adore your stories. And from a business point of view we see great potential. You have a solid fan base, and we recently released a similar storybook for adults that sold like hot buns on the Sunday market,’ He grinned happily, throwing three cubes of sugar in his coffee and mixing it with a freakishly small spoon. ‘So we are more than glad to develop this project with you.’

I blinked over the rim of the cup of coffee, hot steam raising up from the porcelain. HOLY DAMN! I let out a soft giggle and smiled. ‘My…alright then. I had expected to have to give you my sales pitch and perhaps a kidney or two. I mean, I even made a whole presentation, but this is far better. Thank you so much for your trust and enthusiasm Mr. Dunham, it truly means the world!’ 

Mr. Dunham chuckled. ‘And the world better be ready. How about we start editing a first version in the next few months, fine-tune a few things? Oh, and I did have one small question; are these based on actual people?’

‘Some are inspired by a mix of people I know, though all characters are definitely fictional in nature.’

‘Well, perhaps you COULD add a slight reference to Superman, since he’s from the Islands as well. Our readers would surely love that.’

I felt my stomach somersault again. Oh Mr. Dunham..if only you knew.

‘Haha..well. We might have to look into copyrights there, but it sure is true that we, I, adore our homeland hero.’ I winked.

Oh the homeland hero. I did adore him, indeed. In fact I craved him really.

The moment I had gotten back to Jersey I felt like I had left a piece of myself back with Henry. Suddenly the air was bleak and my parents house was not my home anymore, the large but comfortable house feeling like but a shell of what it had been just days earlier. And it got even weirder when I was laying in bed. 

Here I was, alone, my hand outstretched to the spot where he would lay if we would sleep together. I even tried to sniff the pillow he had slept on, to see if any of his scent perhaps lingered there.

It didn’t.

It had been a strangely eventful day today. First the very early flight, a sleepy Henry - quite unique to find in the mornings - driving me to the airport. And then the near desperate hugs and kisses we shared, followed by a restless flight. And then I had to quickly drop off my stuff before heading to another doctors appointment. This time for one of a more invasive nature; a number of physical tests had to be performed so I could enlist for a sperm donor. My plan B. Just in case everything failed with Henry. 

But, in all honesty, it felt more and more like a doom scenario I was increasingly less comfortable with. Did I want to become a single parent, if all of this failed? Was that really my dream? Or was a child just a result of something greater I truly wanted, something I had pushed away and hidden from my still beating heart. Did I actually want something quite different?

Did I want..eh..love, actually?

As I lay there looking at the ceiling, small glow-in-the-dark stars speckling the otherwise dark surface, I came to the bitter tasting realisation that I had not really taken into account that there was suddenly this extra person who had come into the equation. This person I had wild make-out sessions with on my parents couch, as well finding in him the person who offers a listening ear and who would consolidate me and be there during a doctors appointment. 

He cared and was obviously not really wanting to leave. And I, to be even more honest with myself, well, I didn’t want him to leave either. I needed to keep him close and listen to him if I wanted this to last. 

Rolling on my side I picked up my phone. 11.30 PM. He’d probably be sleeping now. I bit my lip and decided to text him, even if he’d only read it in the morning.

“I just tried to sniff the pillow but your scent is gone. I miss you😢”

Quite immediately a message returned. A selfie, taken with a flash in the starkness of a dark bedroom. Henry’s face sulkily grabbing onto a pillow. “That makes two. I miss you three!”

I giggled, silly bear, then imitated his picture, taking one myself, his pillow squeezed tightly in my arm, head resting on top. “Sweet dreams bear. I’ll keep your pillow safe.”

And then a little voice chat message came in, his silky deep voice filling my heart with joy; ‘Sweet dreams Ali.’

Oh sweet were my dreams indeed. 

If only..if only he were here to share them with me.

“The mother cow naturally horrified and distressed out of her mind, chases alongside the trailer, bellowing and calling to her baby, while the confused and terrified calf cries back to the mother.”

“It is a deceptive place. Only the ones who are inside really know that. I am not talking about a one hour visit to the farm… Whoever is really inside, knows what kind of place it is. It’s hell. There is terrible suffering there… The screams of the mothers … I still hear the sound. It won’t go away. I keep thinking about it. Today I am a mother, and I don’t understand how people who say that they love animals don’t see it. Don’t understand it.”

“I never realized until many years later that no matter how kind I felt I was to them, no matter how well I thought I cared for them, every single one of these animals was ultimately destined to meet the same fate. Sooner or later they would all end up on someone’s plate”

“ These innocent babies, who don’t ask to be born, are picked up by a truck at four days old and taken to their deaths. Bobby calves are animals who are quite literally born to die. ~ Veal: All calves raised for veal worldwide are male calves that are by-products of the dairy industry. In many countries such as the USA veal crates are still the predominant rearing system. These tiny wooden crates are so narrow that the calves cannot turn around for most of their lives, depriving them of exercise and preventing normal muscle development – to keep their flesh “supple”. They are also fed an iron-deficient diet to produce the anemic ‘white’ veal prized by gourmets. Calves kept in these conditions suffer from high incidences of infectious disease and develop stereotyped behavior patterns such as tongue rolling, crate-licking or mutual tongue sucking. Veal crates were banned in the EU in 2007 but veal production (within any rearing system) still requires calves to be separated from their mothers within a day of birth. These calves are then placed in pens or hutches, alone or with several other calves, before they are sold to be reared mostly as ‘rose veal’. They are then slaughtered at around six months of age, although some may be older. The UK also exports calves to the EU to be raised for veal.

~ When it comes specifically to mother-calf bonds in cows, separation is incredibly detrimental and traumatic, as cows would naturally suckle their calves for nine months to a year after their long gestation period, just like other strongly maternal species, and the strong bond that is formed between mother and calf in the first few hours after birth makes this enforced separation a very traumatic experience. A Condensed History of Iovid

Iovid is a planet of magic and madness. Centuries before the modern day, demigods (called vir’sakam) ruled the world, armed with elemental magic to keep the powers in balance. They created humans (lukan) as pets, companions, and slaves, which eventually resulted in a revolt and war between the two species. At the end of this war, the great demigod Spirit (Norden) gave his life to destroy magic and the demigod species altogether, leaving Iovid broken and powerless.

In modern times, humans give much more importance to science and engineering, creating their own way around problems with iron, current, and coal. Many cities on the main rings of Iovid have a fear and hatred of magic. Modern technology could be considered almost steampunk in its functions and designs.

The main lands of Iovid are drawn in two rings east-west on either sides of the equator, with the north a more powerful and organized half than the south. The sky is circled by space rocks which, in the day, cast shadows along the land, and by night shine like small moons. There are two suns which are slowly eating one another.

The Turquoise Isle

Far north of the land rings on Iovid lies the diamond-shaped nation of the Turquoise Isle. The islands here are covered in snow for most of the year, and are often cold and dark. The main island is often referred to as the Forest of Giants for its massive 300-400 foot pine trees. The trees are dark sea green in their pines and a cool grey in their wood, giving the place a faded greyscale look with blue tints and shadows.

The island is shaped almost like a pyramid or a top, rising as you near the center and shallowing as you reach the edges. The trees further towards the center are taller by nearly a hundred feet to the trees at the edges of the island and grow closer together. Their branches intertwine, creating a nearly impermeable canopy that even sunlight cannot peek through. The peoples living in the Forest of Giants never venture to the center of the island without reason (usually exile), and those that have gone into the dark have never returned home.

Everidin

The only city on the Turquoise Isle. Everidin lies to the south-west of the main island in the Forest of Giants. Buildings in Everidin are built about 40 feet off the forest floor, well above the dangers that crawl below. They are built from the grey-blue wood of the trees, tanned leather, and the black iron of plentiful ore. Some places are painted using the reds and purples of various plants, indicating a special place such as shops and town halls.

The nation is actually a series of towns, called districts, based around clumps of trees, often connected by a series of bridges, all working together as one city. Everidin’s coastal districts control naval trade, through which Everidin gets most of its supporting goods. Chief exports include iron, animal furs and skins, wood, coal, and a few varieties of crops. Everidin is fairly behind in science and technology compared to the mainlands.

The people of Everidin are a bit on the bulky side, often shorter or taller than the average height and stout in appearance. Their hair ranges in blonde, red, copper, and light brown, and their skin is fairly pale and peach. Their tails are thicker and furrier than those of the people to the south. (Think something like Vikings meet Eskimos; Viking in physical build and some attire, Eskimo in more attire).

Clothes in Everidin consist of furs and shaggy cloths traded from other nations, along with tanned leathers and iron chains and plates. Exotic accessories show a very rich trader, merchant, or other business type.

Chieftains

Chiefdom of the inner districts is split between an elder leader, The Old Spear, and his son, The Little Arrow. The Spear is a man leaning more towards honor, courage, and experience. His son Arrow is olive-skinned and dark-haired, a beautiful young man who most suspect not to be The Spear’s biological son; he was first seen at a few years of age holding onto The Spear during The Spear’s return from a trip to the mainland. Together they take on duties of leadership and aim to help the people of their districts.

The chief of the coastal districts is Subiural’dai, which translates to The Great Bull-cat (subiural are a large beast native to the Turquoise Isle, something of a mix between a lion and a bison; more info below). The Bull-cat, as he’s often called, is a stoic and powerful merchant more interested in affairs off of the island. He is very large in height and girth with a yellow-orange mane of wavy hair.

Miscellaneous

Deities

The gods of summer and winter, Vuteka and Deiura respectively, are often used as symbols and referred to in stories common in Everidin. Most of the people of Everidin acknowledge them but don’t often pray to either, unless in desperation when winter lasts too long. It is said that Vuteka lives far to the south in the deserts, and that Deiura lives deep within the forests of the Turquoise Isle. During their opposing seasons, the deities hibernate. As summer starts to heat the land, Vuteka, the giant golden owl, takes flight and reflects the sun’s rays down to Iovid. When the heat fades and rains begin to signal winter, Deiura, the snow-colored stag, gallops across the land, snow following in her footsteps.

Creatures

Subiural, or bull-cats, are beasts native to the Turquoise Isle. They appear as a mix between a lion, a bear, and a bull; a cat-like horned face leads to a hunched back, with thick forearms tipped with massive claws and cloven back hooves. Alpha males stand nearly eight feet tall at the shoulder and are extremely deadly, prone to attacking even when not threatened. Females are less hunched, smaller, and thinner, without horns. An alpha male will lead a small heard of mating females, their young, and smaller males. Females are often hunted or, more rarely, kept as livestock for meat, furs, and milk.

Tree-eaters are almost mythical in nature, hidden deep within the forest and rarely seen or heard of. Known only through tales, tree-eaters are said to be over fifty feet long and fifteen feet tall. They look like large-scaled lizards with flat bellies and tails, a dark brownish in color. Below their scales and deep within their mouths resides an incredibly hot orange glow. Wherever they walk, they leave a charred path where their bellies burn the ground. They move slowly, from tree to tree. At the preferred tree, they will claw away at the outer bark and begin to eat away at the soft, fleshy, sappy insides. The extreme temperatures of their bodies and mouths burn the inside of the trees, and when much of the pulp is eaten, the tree-eater will crawl inside and continue to eat as it climbs. A tree touched by one of these creatures will never know life again. Spotting one of these trees is easy; the inside of the tree is engulfed in a slow-burning flame that lasts for weeks after the tree-eater feasts, hibernates, and moves on.

Setup

You're a young inhabitant of the city of Everidin. As you've come of age, you've begun seeking your future occupation; maybe you've already picked up an apprenticeship with a merchant or a blacksmith or a butcher. You've begun taking steps away from your family and home to make a name for yourself. Still, you have yet to venture to the forest floor, and the thought fills you with nervousness brought on from old horror stories and myths.

It's been the past few months that a curiosity for adventure has taken to you, though. Every now and then, you stare down from the village pathways and bridges to the dark earth below, and for a second you even consider a quick trip down below, just to see what it's like.

These past few months, you've also been rattled by a strange recurring dream. In this dream, you're moving quickly, deeper into the center of the forest. The darkness consumes you, but your senses are sharper than ever; you can see further than ever, can hear every creature's noise as it disappears in the shadows, smell the wet soil and decaying ivy. Even so, the dark eventually consumes you, and your senses fade. Then, from somewhere in the depths, a pearl grows and floats before you. It's glassy and ice blue, almost like a glass crystal ball, and much bigger than any pearl you've seen before. A foreign whispering growl seems to rattle from the blue sphere, and that's when you wake. Often, you wake with anxiety from this dream, more and more each time you have it.

Lately, you’ve noticed that you aren’t the only restless inhabitant in this place. The chieftains seem to be more at each other’s throats than ever before, and the elders and parents seem more stressed than usual. You get the feeling that things are about to start changing, and fast.

If the Delta virus weren’t enough, the global economy must deal with multiple shortages and supply line issues, penalizing production and causing higher inflation. Demand is not an issue, which is very good news, because as these problems abate, production will ramp up rapidly to meet pent-up demand and rebuild inventories that are at record lows.

Employers have to offer higher wages and increased benefits to attract employees. Job openings are at a record 10.9 million while the total unemployed is less than 8.4 million. While many are worried about labor inflation since it is approximately 65% of the cost of goods, we agree with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who said on Thursday that innovation in digital technology would help alleviate some of the inflationary pressures by making work far more productive. The market is in a tug of war between the economy slowing due to the pandemic, shortages, supply line issues, and reopening, which we expect over the next few months as the number of cases appears to be peaking here and abroad, too.

The real question for investors is how quickly shortages and supply lines issues will begin to ease. We do not see much improvement until mid-2022, which means that monetary and fiscal policies will have to remain overly stimulative during this transition period which will backstop the financial markets. Remember that liquidity creation greater than economic needs finds its way into risk assets which is what we see ahead until the market transitions to accelerating global growth as the pandemic comes under control, shortages ease and supply line issues abate.

A successful investor must be willing to look over the valley when it is darkest before the dawn, where real opportunities exist for the patient investor ready to go against the grain. We know that it is not easy, but it has worked for us over our 50+ year career. We are maintaining a barbell approach, owning companies that will thrive during this challenging period, mostly technology companies, and adding to those that will benefit as we make progress to the other side, such as industrials, capital goods, and commodity companies. All our investments are best in class, generating substantial free cash flows, and are selling well beneath their intrinsic value.

We appear to be getting our arms around the Delta variant as the number of cases over the last 14 days has declined by 2% to 148,562 in the United States and fell by 11% to 586,852 globally. Unfortunately, deaths, a lagging indicator, have increased here but have declined globally by 9%. More than 5.63 billion doses have been administered globally across 184 countries at a rate of 35.7 million doses per day. In the U.S., 378 million doses have been given so far at an average rate of a reduced 786,492 per day. It will take five months to vaccinate 75% of the global population, which should be enough for herd immunity. We expect the CDC and FDA to approve booster shots shortly, and Pfizer/Moderna/J&J will have enough doses of vaccines available to handle all here and abroad. Moderna and we believe Pfizer, too, are working on a two-in-one vaccine for covid and the flu. Don’t forget that the flu is very dangerous, killing on average 38,000 Americans per year. The bottom line is that it appears that the coronavirus is peaking, and we can look forward to better days ahead. We are also confident that new vaccines would be readily available if new variants popped up. It is essential that our government support research spending and domestic supply in our drug industry. Any moves to the contrary are against our national interests.

The Fed is on the horns of a dilemma as the economy has slowed in recent weeks, as evidenced by high-frequency data, a decline in eating out, travel, and tourism. Many sectors are also being restrained by continued supply chain disruptions and labor shortages. Businesses are feeling more substantial inflation and paying higher wages, too.  This was all reported in the recent Beige Book. While the Fed appears split on the timing of when to begin tapering, it seems that the date has been pushed out to year-end or the beginning of next year. All of this depends on the speed of opening, returning to school, the impact of fewer unemployment benefits, and getting vaccinated. Remember that the Fed would rather be a day late than a day too early as they want a strong economy. The Fed will also wait to see what Congress ultimately does on its traditional and social infrastructure bills plus the debt limit. The bottom line is that we expect the Fed to remain overly accommodative for the foreseeable future, which will support financial assets. We still do not see a rate hike until sometime in 2023.

In September, Congress has a lot on its plate dealing with the traditional infrastructure bill, the social one, and the deficit. The Republicans clearly will be obstructionists on all counts, so that the key will be the moderate Democrats in both chambers. Biden needs a victory as his polls continue to fall. While the extremists in both parties are making the most noise, odds favor passage of the traditional infrastructure bill as written and a watered-down, much smaller social spending bill without the onerous tax hikes earlier proposed. We continue to believe that the Dems are likely to lose control of the House next year, creating gridlock in DC for the rest of Biden’s term in office.

While not much economic data was not reported last week, the U.S economy has slowed rather significantly over the past few weeks. While covid appears to be peaking, the real issues facing the economy moving forward are shortages and supply line problems. There is nothing that monetary and fiscal policy can do to alter these problems short term. It just takes time but rest assured that everyone is moving forward to rectify these problems.

Hurricane Ida has not helped the situation, as many plants are still shut down and won’t reopen until power is fully restored for them and their suppliers. Damage exceeds $95 billion. While all this will penalize growth in the third and fourth quarters, it is only deferred growth-boosting demand for 2022. We have raised our economic forecasts for 2022 as production accelerates to fill pent-up demand and restore inventory levels to normalized levels. Liquidity numbers remain off the charts. In addition, we expect the infrastructure bill to begin to kick in late in 2022, moving into 2023. This will be a long cycle as the U.S has underbuilt for the last ten years creating unique investment opportunities in EV, going green, 5G, digital technology, and capital goods. Industrial commodity prices will increase next year as demand increases without the proportional increase in supply.

Growth overseas has been a mixed bag starting to improve in the Eurozone and India but not yet in China. The ECB, at its meeting this past week, revised up its 2021 economic forecast to 5.0% from 4.5%, raising its inflation forecast to 1.5%, which appears low. The ECB did not alter its policy, although it alluded to reducing its bond purchases to a “moderately lower pace.” It stressed, however, that its approach will remain highly accommodative. While China’s growth has slowed over the last month, its August trade surplus increased on an unexpected surge in exports, up nearly 26% from last year, to the U.S. and the Eurozone. Iron ore imports hit a record last month, arguing against reducing their domestic inventories of industrial commodities, including oil. We continue to believe that the Bank of China will make additional accommodative moves to assist its economy as it recovers from the pandemic.

Investment Conclusions

The world is beginning to get its arms around the surge in Delta coronavirus cases. While it is not there yet, there is light at the end of the tunnel, as seen by the global reduction of cases/deaths over the last 14 days. We remain confident that enough doses will be available to vaccinate all, including booster shots, over the next twelve months. The real problem that the global economy is facing is shortages and supply line issues. Unfortunately, it will take time for these problems to diminish, and there is little that monetary and fiscal policy can do to change this but provide additional support during this period. There is no demand problem whatsoever and we will come out of this with substantial pent-up demand needing to be filled with incredibly low inventory levels that need to be rebuilt.

A successful investor must be willing to stay disciplined in the darkness just before the dawn. Patience is a necessity as is controlling risk. We are confident that our portfolios, which are a blend of companies that can thrive during this environment and those that will benefit from growth and margin expansion on the other sideas supply line issues abate will outperform.

ooc. absolutely. wyverns are the national mascot of bern ( specifically the rispan wyverns, but it extends to all wyverns in general ), and to poach them for any reason is strictly illegal, punishable by a fine to make your head spin or, in the case of people who are known poachers with a track record, possibly even death. wyverns are bern’s lifeblood, almost literally considering how much they are an integral part of bernese life, so it’s not even like the case with bald eagles where they’re just a representation of the country. 

that being said, it definitely does happen. wyverns in bern don’t really have scales as much as it is like thick leather plates — i imagine their hides are a lot more like alligators than actual scales. they’re not turned into armor, usually, since wyvern hide is also really heavy and that’s what makes them so protective, so for a person to try to move around in that would be ridiculous, but there is a black market that manufactures wyvern hide products to export to other countries — since wyverns are so exotic in lycia and especially etruria, fancy stuff made from wyvernskin is a. very durable and b. classy.

i imagine that this is less so the case in central-southern bern, but especially among the ethnic groups in northern bern, wyvern bone powder is also used as part of traditional medicine, said to cure any myriad of diseases from indigestion to erectile dysfunction to lethal diseases. these bone powders are obviously not licensed for the proper bernese market, but occasionally you’ll find them in back alley little niche shops tucked away from view and only known to certain people, usually labeled as something else. the government has been trying to crack down on this as well, and has been mostly successful ( esp. since thankfully the majority of bernese people don’t believe in ‘hocus-pocus’ medicine ), but it still exists.

it just occurred to me that in the “fairly odd parents” thread with camus, i do mention the presence of poachers — at one point, zeiss suspects the mother of the baby wyverns they find was killed by poachers, since  adult wyverns have no natural predators in bern; they’re the top of the food chain. it’s definitely illegal, but it’s hard to really catch the poachers because they often live secluded in the wilderness of bern where finding them is difficult, and because the black market for anything from wyvernskin products to wyvern horn pays really crazy well. there are also people who are crazy enough to go out there and try to steal baby wild wyverns to sell them on the black market as pets, which usually goes just about as well as you would think.

Diapason Normal is like Guano

The discoveries in articles 282-283 in The Treaty of Versailles are really interesting. As mentioned in my prior posts, these articles in the treaty are where “everything else” went. Being that, you can get a snapshot of the deeper cultural issues of the era. The need to deliver a standard symphonic concert “A” I am sure seemed culturally important to much of Europe but maybe less so to the United States. I don’t know. Later in the century, it became more interesting to the United States because of military and espionage interests. 

What I discovered in the general catch-all treaty sections was a litany of very specific international regulations that often favored specific countries. No surprise there. If you want something, the best time to get it is when the rules are being made.  Let’s start with the first one, Article 282 #1.  

This is an agreement to basically respect underwater cables. It include all of the nitty-gritty issues of nautical behavior and consequences of bad nautical behavior with underwater cables.  These rules had been established way back in 1884 and it seems that they were ratified with little (no?) changes.  But this is interesting because the fact that this is dropped in here is an obvious tie-in to pending military and industrial plans by the controlling parties of the treaty negotiation. (i.e. U.S., France, and England mostly)  England and The U.S. especially would want this sort of international agreement as they establish lines across The Channel and the Atlantic, and at the turn of the century were finally capitalizing on the technology. I have read in the past about the history of the transatlantic cable because of the famous low-voltage versus high-voltage battle of ideology between Lord Kelvin and Dr. Whitehouse. But this treaty clause attaches directly to the tail end of that era and onto the next one post WWI.

I promise not to go through all of the articles. But the very next one jumped out at me and I learned something very interesting when I paddled into this pronouncement:  

 Again, this article leverages a prior agreement from 1909. So this wasn’t something that had to start implementation from scratch. A lot of the clauses are about safety and consistency of usability design of the motor-car.  The agreement is specifically addressing inter-country incompatibilities.  This agreement spells-out horns, headlights, steering, and when a reverse gear was required. But the single most interesting bit is this. I am sure you have seen the international plate designations like this:

I have always understood that these were international identifiers for “motor-cars”. I was told when I was young that this was a requirement in Europe to show the source of the license especially when crossing into foreign countries. And, this is the case. But even in Wikipedia, the references for the source of this specification and rule are much more current than what I see in the original 1909 convention agreement from Paris.  These license ovals were established in 1909, originally enforced in the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, and only later refined and better documented (post WWII). 

Skipping past some railroad specifications, and a bunch of toll rules, and some international nautical cargo guidelines brings us up to the most fascinating socioeconomic discoveries. Let’s look at #15, #17, @18, and #26. We will come back to the others which are even more interesting. 

 15, 17, 18, and 26 are all aligned to be social impact from the white working class; especially post industrial revolution. In general, the western world upper social classes objected to women working in sweat shops (non-white slaves were okay, though) and same for white slaves. I did not look into the obscenity publications reference. There was progressive social trend for more human (white exclusive) rights as a general whiplash against the corporate worker abuses of the industrial revolution. These social trends are indicated in these items.     

And then there were these:

(24) Conventions of November 3, 1881, and April 15, 1889, regarding precautionary measures against phylloxera.  

What is  phylloxera?

Phylloxera is a microscopic sap sucker insect like an aphid that feasts on grape vines. The link here to the regional Franco concern is probably not a coincidence.  I did not trace this one down more but it was interesting to learn what this was.

(16) Convention of September 26, 1906, for the suppression of the use of white phosphorus in the manufacture of matches 

Why white phosphorus?

This was amazing and very much “of this era”.  It turns out that this is linked back to the progressive anti-industrial social activism mentioned earlier. Prior to the 20th century, matches were made of white phosphorus in-the-raw.  The amazing new market for matches in the late 1800′s drove a huge growth in manufacturing of phosphorus matches that were cheap, reliable, and plentiful. Match manufacturers used children and/or poop people in the factories to maximize profits. It turned out that in the late 1800′s it was discovered that exposure to white phosphorus is aggressively deadly with any exposure. The disease is called “Phossy Jaw” and it was a very big deal in the early 20th century. Finland banned white phosphorus in 1887. The United States was just about last to agree to switching to alternatives like red phosphorus. In the Treaty of Versailles the general western world put the ban in writing. (And the U.S continued to lag a few more years on this!)

(25) Convention of March 19, 1902, regarding the protection of birds useful to agriculture

Protection of birds? 

I have saved the best for last. Why protect birds? It turns out that at the turn of the 20th century, there was a mad rush on bird guano. Bird poop was the single best agriculture fertilizer in the world. The best sources for bird poop were tropical islands; where piles and piles of bird waste built up over decades and centuries to provide a fertile export that all western countries wanted.  This ties into a great colonization and aggressive territorial grabs to harvest bird waste from all around the world. (See Guam, American Samoa, etc.)  This treaty item #25 is a posturing to protect the bird fertilizer flow for the western world. It would not be until a decade into the 20th century when discovery of a way to extract nitrogen chemically so that bird guano wasn’t the best source of fertilizer. The general applicability of the Haber process would come for many more years; displacing the wild financial and geopolitical run on bird droppings.

I am only half done reading it, but it does add interesting sauce to this subject of empires.   Since The Treaty was a contract among most of the major powers of 1919, it puts a lot of the needs and greeds into writing and made for a fascinating slide down from what was an initial interest in understanding why a concert “A” was standardized at 440 Hz. Like most things; the answer isn’t simple and there’s a lot more to the story than you’d guess.
