Waking up from years of stasis on a ship in deep space only to find the rest of your crew dead... and when a stranger answers your distress call...what awaits you? Ami wakes up on her ship hoping to see her crew mates, yet when she finds them they are all dead. Now alone on her ship she sends out a distress call, not sure if anyone will respond... but when someone does she is surprised to discover a alien taking the form of a handsome man named Dorian. Dorian offers to help her, let her stay on her ship until the repairs are done, and let her study him... yet the moment she steps onto his ship things begin to get strange. She begins to see shadows moving, visions of her dead crew mates... and her memories are starting to clash. Ami doesn't know what is true or real but she feels like she's been on this ship before... something about Dorian calls to her and the thrum of the ship seeps into her being... what actually happened to her crew and who is Dorian to her? This was such a fun read, especially since its a bit of sci-fi horror, a touch of dark romance, and just all the fun of an unreliable narrator. I had so much fun reading this and trying to unravel the mystery with Ami. I loved the twist and turns and honestly this was the perfect book to read this week (right before I go see Alien Romulus). I am such a sucker for horrormance and this gothic space one just perfectly fit for me.

Chum with a special little human in their small boat for 1 that gave him some cooked fish because they noticed something was protecting them? 🥺 just threw it out to sea, no questions asked ❤️❤️❤️

Chum wasn’t 100% sure why it decided to help out this little boat. Maybe because the person in it was so… small? They had just a small, little boat in a big blue ocean.

If a wave hit the boat, it would make the boat shake a little. If there was a way too big wave, Chum knew it would crash or even tip over. Why were they in such a small boat? Well, Chum knew why! They needed food, huh?

It decided to help.

It watched and made sure that the boat wouldn’t tip over! If it saw the boat tip too far to one side, it would use one of its many tentacles, righting it so the boat wouldn’t fall over.

The person in the boat didn’t notice it at all. Even though Chum was huge, it was an ambush predator. It moves silently, unnoticed, until the lights come on, then the water gets filled with a bright, blue glow, and you know that it has already caught you.

It normally uses its large tentacles to crash ships. It knows that people know it, too. It has heard legends—people talking about the dangerous glow that shows up and how you should be prepared to crash land… if you’re even alive that long.

At least, that’s what it thought. It realized that maybe the person in the ship did notice that it was helping because, out of nowhere, they threw in their largest catch of the day. The fish was cooked, so it knew that it wasn’t an accident. “Thank you for helping me!” They called out, their words being carried by the salty sea air.

Chum slowly moved his hands to catch the food. It might have been huge to the little human, but to it, the fish was nothing but a sliver. Anyway, it ate the food, and it tasted better than anything that it could have caught. Why? Because it was made for it! The food was made just for it to have, to thank it for helping them.

It was made with love.

And after that, it followed the ship as close to land as it could, wanting to see the human get off safely, and once they did, it swam away, back to the cliff that it calls its home. It was going to pay… very close attention to this human.

to the anon who played slay the princess and mentioned stolas being the princess in one hypothetical version: please do not diss my wife that way… the whole point of slay the princess is that she changes and shapes herself around your actions. she isn’t some asshole who abuses you, the only thing she knows is that she loves you in her multitude of fucked up ways, be that possession, beating you senseless, or a meaningful kiss. she loves you.

(all in a very lighthearted way btw, anon! i’ve been a sucker for this game when it initially dropped like.. a year ago? so i’m very passionate about it.)

(SPOILERS FOR SLAY THE PRINCESS: if anything, the narrator should be compared to stolas. he’s the one trying to warp your senses and following one straight narrative to kill the princess, not caring about your feelings nor hers. he will get what he wants. but in the end, you get to finally end him and make the ultimate choice of slaying the princess or getting together with her.)

anyway. if you like comforting eldritch horror that’s also a romance novel, slay the princess is amazing!
