some advice i have for future computer science students
as soon as you learn data structures & complexity, run, don’t just walk, RUN to leetcode while the knowledge is still fresh in your mind. your entire career and whether you’ll get a well-paying job vs an average paying job depends on how good you are at leetcode.
build as many projects as you can, and i’m not talking tutorial projects that take a few hours, i’m talking big projects. working on a project for a month or two will get you really far.
if you don’t have an internship, do not waste your summers, learn new technologies, languages, concepts and build projects you can put in your cv.
try to participate in hackathons and coding competitions. it’s okay if you fail, but you’ll learn a lot.
learn how to read documentation. most tutorials don’t even cover a quarter of what a language, framework or software has to offer. the sooner you make reading documentation a habit, the better it is. and yes i know, documentation is long and hard to read. my advice is only read the sections that are relevant to you in the moment. something i also personally do is look at the code examples at the same time as i am reading the paragraphs, it really helps easily absorb the information.
try not to use chatgpt. and if you do, then at least use it for stuff you know you can do yourself and will be able to correct if the bot gets it wrong. using chatgpt is a very slippery slope and the more you use it the less you learn.
the math is important. math teaches you how to reason and how to develop better logical thinking. just because you don’t see yourself using the xyz theorem you’ve learnt anytime in the future doesn’t mean the math is useless.
be prepared to get comfortable with erros, issues, bugs and just problems in general. you’ll be coding 30% of the time and debugging 70% of the time (i’m exaggerating but sometimes it feels like this is the case lol), and that’s okay, it’s how we learn and the sooner you embrace it the better. if you’re someone who easily gets frustrated, then this is a heads up.
learn as you go. there is no such thing as waiting until you know everything before you start on a project. the only way and the best way to learn in this field is practice, so build, build, and build.
these are all the ones i could think of for now. feel free to comment your thoughts and questions <3

Top 10 Data Science Project Ideas For Beginners - 2021
Tumblr media
If you are an aspiring data scientist, then it is mandatory to involve in live projects to hone up your skills. These projects will help you to brush up your knowledge on knowledge and skills and boost up your career path. Now, if you write about those live projects on your resume, then there is a very good chance that you land up with your dream job on data science. But to be a top-notch data science engineer, it is essential to work on various projects. For this, it is important to know the best project ideas which you can leverage further on your CV.
Start Working on Live Projects to Build your Data Science Career
To get a sound idea for data science projects, you should be more concerned about it rather than it’s implementation. Because of this, we have come up with the best ideas for you. Here we have enlisted the top 10 project ideas that can shape your future in the world of data science. But to begin such programs or live projects, you need to have a good understanding of Python and R languages.
1. Credit Card Fraud Detection Mechanism
This project requires knowledge of ML and R programming. This project mainly deals with various algorithms that you can get familiar with once you start doing your applied machine learning course. These algorithms mainly cover Logistic Regression, Artificial Neural Networks, Gradient Boosting Classifiers, etc. From the record of the Credit Card transactions, you can surely be able to differentiate between fraudulent and genuine data. After that, you can draw various models and use the performance curve to understand the behavior.
This project involves the Credit Card transaction datasets that give a pure blend of fraudulent as well as non-fraudulent transactions. It implements the machine learning algorithm using which you can easily detect the fraudulent transaction. Also, you will understand how to utilize the machine learning algorithm for classification.
2. Customer Segmentation :
It is another such intriguing data science project where you need to use your machine learning skills. This is basically an application of unsupervised learning where you need to use clustering to find out the targeted user base. Customers are segregated on the basis of various human traits such as age, gender, interests, and habit. Implementation of K-means clustering will help to visualize gender as well as different age distribution. Also, it helps to analyze annual income and spending ideas.
Here the companies deal with segregating various groups of people on the basis of the behavior. If you work on the project, you will understand K means clustering. It is one of the best methods to know the clustering of the unlabeled datasets. Through this platform, companies get a clear understanding of the customers and what are their basic requirements. In this project, you need to work with the data that correlates with the economic scenario, geographical boundaries, demographics, as well as behavioral aspects.
3. Movie Recommendation System :
This data science project can be rewarding since it uses R language to build a movie recommendation system with machine learning. The Recommendation system will help the user with suggestions and there will be a filtering process using which you can determine the preference of the user and the kind of thing they browse. Suppose there are two persons A and B and they both like C and D movies. This message will automatically get reflected. Also, this will engage the customers to a considerable extent.
It gives the user various suggestions on the basis of the browsing history and various preferences. There are basically two kinds of recommendation available-content based and collaborative recommendation. This project revolves around the collaborative filtering recommendation methodology. It tells you on the basis of the browsing history of various people.
4. Fake News :
It is very difficult to find out how an article might deceive you mostly for social media users. So, is it possible to build a prototype to find out the credibility of particular news? This is a major question but thanks to the data science professionals of some of the major universities to answer the problem.  They begin with the major focus of the fake news of clickbait. In order to build a classifier, they extracted data from the news that is published on Opensource. It is used to preprocess articles for the content-based work with the help of national language processing. The team came up with a unique machine learning model to segregate news articles and build a web application to work as the front end.
The main objective is to set up a machine learning model that provides you with the correct news since there is much fake news available on social media. You can use TfidfVectorizer and Passive-Aggressive classifier to prepare a top-notch model. TF frequency tells the number of times a particular word is displayed in the document. Inverse Document Frequency tells you the significance of a word on the basis of which it is available on several contents. Therefore, it is important to know how it works.
A TfidfVectorizer helps in analyzing a gamut of documents.
After analyzing, it makes a TF-IDF matrix.
A passive-aggressive Classifier tells you whether the classification outcome is viable. However, it changes if the outcome swings in the opposite direction.
Now, you can build a machine learning model if you have such good project ideas.
5. Color Detection :
It might have happened that you don’t remember the name of the color even after seeing a particular object. There is an ample number of colors that are totally based on the RGB color values but you can hardly remember any. Therefore, this data science project will deal with the building of an interactive app that will find the chosen color from the available options. In order to enable this, there should be a detailed level of data for all the available colors. This will help you to find out which color will work for the selected range of color values.
In this project, you will require Python. You will utilize this language in creating an application that will tell you the name of the color. For this, there is a data file that comes with color names and values. Then it will be utilized to evaluate the distance from each color and find out the shortest one. Colors are segregated into red, green, and blue. Now the PC will analyze the range of the colors varying from 0 to 255. There are a plethora of colors available and in the dataset, you need to align each color value with the corresponding names. It requires a dataset that comprises RGB values as per the names.
6. Driver Drowsiness Detection :
In order to perform training and test data, researchers have come up with a Drowsiness Test which uses the Real Life Drowsiness dataset in order to detect the multi-stage drowsiness. The objective is to find out the extreme and discernible cases related to drowsiness using data science Skill. However, it permits the system to find out the softer signals of drowsiness. After that, comes the feature extraction which needs developing a classification model.
Since overnight driving is really a difficult task and leads to varied problems, the driver gets drowsy and feels quite sleepy while driving. This project helps to detect the time when the driver gets lazy and falls asleep. It produces an alarming sound as soon as it detects it. It implements a unique deep learning model to determine whether the driver is awake or not. This comes with a parameter to find out how long we stay awake. If the score is raised above the threshold value, then the alarm rings up. Now, you can easily be able to get the related dataset and Source Code.
7. Gender and Age Detection :
This is basically a computer vision and machine learning project that implements convolutional neural networks or CNN. The main objective is to find out the gender and age of a person using a single image of the face. In this data science project, you can segregate gender as male or female. After that, you can classify the age on the basis of various ranges like 0-2, 4-6, 15-20, and many more. Because of different factors such as makeup, lighting, etc, it is very difficult to recognize gender and age forms a particular image. Due to this, the project implements a classification model instead of regression.
For the purpose of face detection, you will require a .pb file since this is a protobuf file. It is capable of holding the graph definition and the trained weights of the model. A .pb file is used to hold the protobuf in a binary format. However, the .pbtxt extension is used to hold this in the text format. In order to detect the gender, the .prototxt file is used to find out the network configuration. The .caffemodel file is used here to denote the internal states of various parameters.
8. Prediction Of The Forest Fire :
Both forests, as well as the wildfire, ignites a state of emergency and health disasters in modern times. These disasters can hamper the ecosystem and this can cause too much money. Also, a huge infrastructure is required to deal with such issues. Therefore, using the K-means clustering you can easily be able to detect the forest fire hotspots and the disastrous effect of this nature’s fury. With this, it can cause faster resource allocation and the quick response. The meteorological data can be used to determine the seasons during the forest fires that are more frequent. Also, you can determine the weather conditions and climatic change that can reduce them and bring sustainable weather.
9. Effect of Climate Change on Global Food Supply :
Climatic change seems to affect various parts of the world. As a result, people residing in those areas are also under the wrath of such climatic change. The project mainly deals with the impact the climatic change is having and its effect on the entire food production. Main motive of the project is to determine the adverse effect of the climate on the production of crops. The project ideas mainly revolve around the impact of temperature and the rainfall along with the diversified cause of carbon dioxide on the growth of the plants. This project mainly focuses on the various data visualization techniques and different data comparisons will be drawn to find out the yield in various regions.
10. Chatbot-Best After the Data Science Online Training :
This is one of the famous projects done by the most aspiring data science professionals. It plays an important role in the business. They are used to give better services with very little manpower. In this project, you will see the deep learning techniques to talk with customers and can implement those using Python. There are basically two types of chatbots available. One deals with the domain which is used to solve a particular issue and the other one is an open domain chatbot. The second one you can use to ask various types of questions. Due to this, it requires a lot of data to store.
“ Upskill Yourself Through Online Data Science Courses and Become a Professional ”

Ph.D. Applications for Anthropology/ Humanities/ Social Sciences (with examples from a success story)
Doing a Ph.D. is a really scary thought. Especially in humanities and social sciences. Especially in today’s job market.
Here I’m going to speak a little about my approach to Ph.D. applications, why I chose to do what I did, and how I put it all together including examples.
1. The Doubt
After coming out of my Master's degree, I already had a year of research set up, so I didn’t have to think about jobs like all of my friends I had made during that degree. I watched many of them struggle to find a job offer. Some were successful in attaining a job in Cultural Resource Management, a couple got smaller jobs in local museums, but for the most part it induced a lot of stress to have come out of a Master’s degree with no prospects.
How I imagined my future at that time: I knew I didn’t want to work in a museum, I knew I didn’t like Cultural Resource Management, I knew that after all this hard work I didn’t want to end up underpaid somewhere doing data entry.
A Ph.D. has always been something that I wanted. Ever since entering the Anthropology discipline, I imagined myself working towards becoming a Professor.
Here’s what I was told when I started to consider a Ph.D. Program:
“Don’t do it” (said by someone who already had her Ph.D.)
“I wish I had gone into something with more money, even after my Ph.D. its been difficult to find stable work”
“If you’re doing a Ph.D. in social sciences, ONLY go if you are fully funded, otherwise it is not worth the financial debt”
“Most people don’t get in their first try, that's why people apply to 10+ schools”
Coming up with a plan: After hearing this, I came up with a couple different options. Plan A: Apply to Ph.D. programs, if I get into one my first try and it's fully funded then I’ll do it. Plan B: Find a job in Environmental consulting, I could put my GIS experience to use, make some money, and then try again for a Ph.D. later down the road if I wanted. Plan C: Move to Japan and live out my weeb dreams (I’m part Japanese and have a lot of family there so this wasn’t as crazy as it sounds).
I was genuinely okay with any of these options. They all involve things that I enjoy, none of them are bad options, none of them would feel like “failure” if I ended up not getting into a program. I think this step is very important because it forces you to figure out what you care about, and allows you to be open to change if plan A doesn’t work out.
2. Choosing a Program to Apply to
I knew that I didn’t just want to apply anywhere. Getting a job outside of a PhD is already hard enough, and I wanted the school that I chose to reflect the work that I would put into it. As much as we want to think that name brands don’t matter when it comes to education, it sure as heck does help when it comes to opportunity and being selected amongst 100′s to 1000′s of applicants. Therefore, why not shoot for the stars? What’s the harm in trying. For this reason, I decided to only apply to schools that:
Had a prestigious name
Had a program that supported what I wanted to study and allowed for cross-disciplinary research (Digital Archaeology focused on SE Asia)
Had an advisor that had done research paralleled to mine (whether that included SE Asia or just Digital Archaeology in general).
I started research into programs with the Ivies and went down from there, also cross-comparing programs that had been ranked as best schools for studying Anthropology.
At the time of researching, the programs that stood out the most to me were:
Stanford (ideal because it was close-ish to home, fully funds their Phd students for 5 years, has opportunity for additional funding, had professor working with digital archaeology in Asia)
Harvard (had professor working in Digital Archaeology though it wasn’t in my preferred region, also has good funding, and its Harvard)
U Chicago (traditionally one of the top schools for Anthropology, however I had heard that a lot of this is because of “legacy” professors, and not much has come out of the department in recent years. Did not have someone specifically in my region of focus)
ASU (Also considered one of the top Anthropology schools, but funding is often fought for between students)
UC Berkeley (Had professors studying Asia, but it is a public school and also has limited guaranteed funding)
I sent e-mails to advisors that I thought I could support my research (this was probably around May, when applications are due Sep-Dec).
Hello Professor______,
My name is _______ and I am interested in applying to ________’s Doctoral program in Archaeology beginning in the fall of 2020. I would like to inquire whether you are accepting graduate students for this period, as my research interests align well with your research. I received my B.A. in __________ from _________ in 2017 and am currently _______. [Enter what you’re doing now, and any relevant experience that shows what you’re interested in researching]. [Enter something about their research, and why you’re interested in working with them/why you think you would work well with them]. I am eager to continue along this path and I feel as though your experience with _______could provide an interesting opportunity for future research. I would also be interested in working with [enter any other faculty that have similar interests, this shows that you’ve done some research into the program and the school in general] For your convenience, I have attached my CV here. If you have the time, I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you further about the program and future research.
Best,
Full name
I also researched the financial aid provided to incoming Ph.D. students. After doing this, the only schools that sounded good to me were Stanford and Harvard.
Yeah, I know, only applying to Stanford and Harvard was a “big risk,” but this is how I thought about it:
I don’t want to commit to a Phd program for 5+ years if it's not fully funded, doesn’t have a big name, and isn’t going to guarantee opportunity after graduating.
I wanted an environment where I knew I could be happy under immense amounts of pressure  (California by family, Boston by friends).
If I didn’t get in, I had back up options that honestly sounded really fun to me, so I was okay with pursuing those instead.
I didn’t want a Ph.D. just to have a Ph.D., I wanted a degree that would set me apart from others so that I could give myself the best chance for success afterward. I wanted one that, if pursued, could lead me to become a professor.
So I applied to 2 Schools.
I got scolded for this by many people... but whatever...I got in, so ha. Why spend money and time on an application for a school that you don’t really want to go to? :P
3. Applying to a Program
What an application looks like:
1. At least 3 recommendation letters:
Mine were:
Undergraduate Anthropology Advisor who has been helping me throughout the years with grant applications, etc. She knows me well, can speak well to my accomplishments. She is also a very well decorated anthropologist.
Undergraduate Professor of Geography who can speak to my GIS coursework. I’ve been updating him with my whereabouts and successes since graduating, so we have kept in touch regularly since taking his course.
My Master's dissertation advisor (he stressed me out submitting his letter 3 hours before the deadline >:| )
It’s good to have your recommendation letters come from people within the academic world. These people can write on your ability to achieve your research goals, your drive, etc. It’s okay to have maybe one letter from a workplace environment, however, it’s best to get as much street cred as you can from these letters, and this comes from Professors that know what they’re doing.
2. Curriculum Vitae (C.V.): This is important because it shows everything you’ve accomplished up to this point. This is how mine was set up:
Full Name, Current Position, Email, Phone Number
Education: University Name, City, Degree in ____
Publications: In Edited Volumes, Journal Articles, Manuscripts in Preparation
Conference and Workshop Participation: Papers, Presentations
Grants, Awards, and Fellowships:
Research Experience: Project Roles, Fieldwork
Teaching Experience
Additional Employment History
Leadership and Extracurriculars
Skills/Languages
A C.V. is a list of EVERYTHING you’ve done in your career, unlike a resume which is tailored to the specific job that you’re applying to. If you’d like a specific example, send me a DM.
3. Personal Statement: This is where you tell them why you want to be there and what makes you qualified. Why should they consider you?
Personal Statement Example
1st paragraph, introduce the program and your research interests: I am applying to _____ for admission to the Ph.D. program in Anthropology with a focus in Archaeology. My research interests are to explore [the consequences of ..... on the environment and human responses to environmental change] in [region of the world], and how these actions of the past can be visualized through the use of remote sensing and GIS applications to archaeology.
2nd paragraph, why you’re interested in what you’re doing: I learned the value of digital applications in archaeology through my undergraduate and master’s degree. [Digital archaeology] is appealing to me because [.........]. I first became interested in [example of why you’re interested in the topic/what inspires you].  After witnessing this, I began to seek out opportunities to partake in similar research.
3rd and 4th paragraph, what makes you qualified to pursue this degree?: I have many research experiences that qualify my pursuit of a Ph.D. dedicated to using digital methods in Anthropological research. [Talk about your undergrad experience, do some name-dropping of professors you’ve worked with], [why did these experiences inspire you to take the next step?], [how are you where you are now because of them?]
5th paragraph, what are you doing now?
6th paragraph, why this school in particular?: This is where you name drop the professor you are interested in working with, talk about how their research aligns well with yours by mentioning specific things that they’ve done such as theoretical approaches. What are you interested in doing that would fit well within this program? Are there any facilities on campus that you are particularly eager to work with? Show that you’ve done your research.
7th paragraph, what do you plan to do after you get your Ph.D. from this institution?: With goals of continuing archaeological research in ________ and expanding off the networks that I have established in _______, ________’s doctoral program in Anthropology is the ideal match to further my career as a Digital/Landscape Archaeologist. The Ph.D. in Anthropology at _______ allows for _________[reasons why you like the program]. Ultimately, my postgraduate goals are to remain in academia by continuing research and gaining a university faculty position. My foundation in archaeology gained in my undergraduate, graduate, and ______experiences have equipped me with a unique set of abilities to offer to ______’s Anthropology graduate program, and I look forward to the opportunity to exchange ideas with faculty and students alike.
Have your resume and statement looked over by as many eyes as you possibly can. It took me a good 6-10 revisions before settling on something that I liked.
4. Let the professors that you’ve been in contact with know
This puts you at the front of their minds when application review comes around. They’ll be like “oh yeah, this person messaged me about this.” I hadn’t spoken to the professors that I reached out to since those first few exchanges back in May, so sending this message was very valuable to remind them of my existence.
This email can be as simple as: Hi Professor ____, I hope you have been well since we last spoke. I am writing to inform you that I have submitted my application to _______. Since our last chat I’ve been [whatever you’re up to now that's relevant]. I look forward to hearing from _____ soon. Best, Me.
5. Productive Waiting
Yay, you’ve submitted! That was hard, but you made it through. Time to start diving into those other plans you’ve been thinking about. What will you do if you get into your top school? What will you do if you don’t get into your top, but you do get into your 2nd or 3rd choice? What if you don't get into any of them?
Remember that none of these options are bad, and in this world, you have to be open to change and welcome it. A Ph.D. is a really long commitment, and it doesn’t have to happen right away.
If you get in, accept only if:
It has the research you’re looking for
It has an advisor that’s supportive of what you’re doing
It’s transparent about what it offers its students
The current students are happy with the culture of the program and quality of life
The location is something you're comfortable with (for me having family nearby was a very important factor)
The money you are offered is enough to live the lifestyle you need to maintain good mental health
There is an opportunity for networking and expansion of your research outside of the university
As always, feel free to reach out with any questions at @aal.archaeology on Instagram or DM here! I’m happy to share my documents with you.
Happy writing!

Covid At Home (permalink)
Dutch hacker and XS4ALL cofounder Rop Gonggrijp and artist Vera Wilde have produced Covid At Home, an open-access guide to staying healthy, treating illness, and general pandemic preparedness.
https://covid-at-home.info/ It's an excellent, sober, accessible guide, produced with help from medical professionals.
They're seeking help to translate it into other languages as well. German edition coming next.

Trump wants a US-only vaccine (permalink)
The Trump administration has offered "large sums" to a German manufacturer for US-only access to a potential covid-19 vaccine
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/mar/15/trump-offers-large-sums-for-exclusive-access-to-coronavirus-vaccine
According to Die Welt, Curevac has made progress on the vaccine, and the Trump admin is seeking access "but for the US only."
The company's recently departed CEO, Daniel Menichella, is a US citizen who recently visited the White House.
The Trump administration's failure to understand our shared collective microbial destiny is emblematic. Trump epitomizes the neoliberal sociopathy of "enlightened self-interest" and "meritocracy" and the belief that "there is no such thing as society." It's a pathology as dangerous as any virus, and could yet kill us all. Immunizing America against coronavirus only works if
The vaccine is perfect (they never are) and
The US blocks all entry into the country by unvaccinated people (which it cannot do).
Instead of figuring out how to orient 100% of US capacity to producing enough vaccine to eliminate the virus worldwide, Trump is engaged in isolationist, superstitious fantasies.

Within hours, Curvac had told Trump to go fuck himself and announced that any vaccine they produce will be available worldwide.

Folding@Home to beat covid (permalink)
Since the year 2000 (!), Folding@Home has been harnessing the power of idle personal computers to do scientific work on protein folding, using donated cycles to improve science. Now they're running 23 (!!) projects to help improve our scientific understanding of covid-19.
"We're simulating the dynamics of COVID-19 proteins to hunt for new therapeutic opportunities."
They've already used this to locate sites in the Ebola protein that can be targeted by therapeutics.

Italian hospitals fix their ventilators with 3D printed parts (permalink)
A Brescia hospital urgenty needed valves for their ventilators. A journalist contacted the local Fablab, who contacted a local 3D printing expert who came to the hospital, redesigned the part, and printed a replacement on the spot.

Within a day, 10 patients were breathing with respirators incorporating 3D printed parts.
Tumblr media
How to prepare for coming layoffs (permalink)
It's not outlandish to prepare for a recession (and hence layoffs) as a result of Covid-19. And while techies have a robust labor-market relative to other sectors, tech-workers are not immune from mass layoffs when their employers contract sharply or shut down altogether.
Jacob Kaplan-Moss has been here before and has some tips for techies to prepare for unemployment. He points out that the highest layoff risk comes to juniors (unprotected and easy to jettison), seniors (highest paid), and prickly people (politically easier to lay off) and underperformers (obvs).
https://jacobian.org/2020/mar/13/layoffs-are-coming/
How do you prep for layoffs? First, try to have 1 year's savings in the bank (advice from the 2000 dotcom crash). You probably can't do this, but start saving now. Cancel all nonessential expenses.
Next, update your resume. When layoffs start cascading, being ready to start applying for jobs can give you a head-start over your competition.
Kaplan-Moss suggests setting aside an hour every quarter to update your CV – this is good advice generally, as you never know when someone will ask for your resume (periodically I have to produce one for a visa or a grant, for example).
Practice interviews, using online resources, like this one:
https://eng-hiring.18f.gov/
In addition, contact your "professional network" and start feeling them out;Tb and brush up on your tech skills.
Leaked Tiktok moderation guidelines are a censoring mess (permalink)
There's a lot going on in The Intercept's deep dive into two leaked set of moderation guidelines from Bytedance, parent company of Tiktok, ably reported (as ever) by Sam Biddle.
https://theintercept.com/2020/03/16/tiktok-app-moderators-users-discrimination/
First is a confirmaton of Tiktok's policy of telling moderators to downrank videos from unattractive, fat, old or poor people, and signs of poverty. Homes need to have "no obvious slummy charactor" (sic), without a "crack on the wall" or "old and disreputable decorations."
The reasoning is clear "This kind of environment is not that suitable for new users for being less fancy and appealing" (overweight, poor, old or unattractive users lower the tone). Tiktok spox Josh Gartner said these were to prevent bullying, (but they don't mention bullying).
The leaks are pretty frank about their ableism and lookism, banning "low quality" traits including "abnormal body shape," "ugly facial looks," dwarfism, "obvious beer belly," "too many wrinkles," and "eye disorders."
They also ban "slums, rural fields" and "dilapidated housing."
The flipside of this is that Tiktok mods secretly contacting influencers to clue them in on secret moderation criteria that might get them downranked or banned, creating a group of insiders who are protected from the arbitrary, shadow regulation regime other Tiktokers never see.
That shadow regime is documented in a second set of leaks, which details the subjects and views that can get you kicked, suspended or downranked from the platform. Anything that embarrasses or upsets China is obviously out, like Falun Gong or Tiananmen.
Beyond that, livestreams of encounters with cops, videos that criticize the military, or criticism Tiktok itself are all lifetime bannable offenses – while racism and hate speech get you a one-month suspension.
Also revealed: Tiktok has a bunch of fake accounts maintained by its own staff, who gank influencer videos from Instagram that look classy and fun, as a way of shifting the content mix on the platform.
But even as these accounts were focusing on tags like "#BeachGirl," actual Tiktok users who posted pictures of themselves in swimwear faced temporary or permanent bans.
(You can get a permanent ban for wearing a garment that reveals "outline of female nipples").
There's also a "voice vulgarity" category of guidelines, including bans for "Singing or playing music pornography contents, sexual cues, etc," or "discussing the topic of sexual reproduction." You can also get banned for flipping the bird – but only if you do it more than twice.
Tiktok's appeal is that they use secret sauce to elevate accounts with few followers and share them with millions of viewers. The legend is that this is a way to rocket the humble but meretricious to fame, but the leaks reveal that no olds, fats, or poors need apply.

Canceled Bar Mitzvah is still a mitzvah (permalink)
A heartwarming story of "Covered Dish" behavior in the time of coronavirus! "Friends canceled their son's Bar Mitzvah this weekend but decided to keep the contract with their caterer, a tiny Hmong-owned business. They delivered the food to friends in quarantine & sent pans home with others."

(Disclaimer: many wild liberties taken with the academic hiring process, North Atlantic sailing, etc. etc.)
My writing music for this section: X
Bringing Vero and Cath in on the entire thing proves to be a godsend, and Cath makes it her mission to help Zhenya prepare to try and find work in the Maritimes. She sits down with Zhenya and spends hours helping him translate some of his more celebrated papers and articles into English. He does the basic translation and she refines the grammar and the syntax.
“I’m learning so much about marine mammal behavior,” she laughs. When he tries to thank her she waves it off. “I’m supposed to be taking it really easy, with the baby coming so soon. This is keeping me from losing my mind out of boredom, frankly.”
She’s late in her last trimester, belly swollen and heavy. Zhenya knows she’s probably incredibly uncomfortable most of the time. “You saint, too good for Kris,” he only half-jokes, much as he likes Kris.
“Oh, and doesn’t he know it,” she twinkles, and grins cheekily at her husband as he comes in carefully balancing a plate of doctor-approved snacks.
“Don’t I know what” Kris asks, leaning down to kiss her bright hair.
“Don’t know anything,” Zhenya grumbles, to cover up how much their devoted rapport affects him.
Fuck, he misses Sid.
***
By the time his CV is ready to start sending out, Magda and Sid are somewhere off the coast of Virginia.
The closer they get the more Zhenya’s restlessness sharpens. He buries himself in his research, but Vero seems to know just when he’s ready to tear his hair out.
“Take a baby,” she tells him, and hands Scarlett or Estelle off to him. He’s happy to babysit, after all she and her husband are doing for him. And the kids are sweethearts.
Somehow, time passes and Magda and Sid draw ever nearer.
***
A cold call to the Memorial University of Newfoundland miraculously leads to him being invited to speak to the biology department chair via Skype.
“Your credentials are impressive, Dr. Malkin,” he says. “But I’m told you held a secure position in a prestigious university in Russia. Why here, and why now?”
Zhenya answers as best as he can. “Focus for last couple years has been Atlantic humpback population. This area one of the best places to study. Was here last summer, tagging whales for research study. But that’s not biggest reason.” He pauses, and gathers his words.
“Political climate in Russia is… difficult. There are laws about what they call, ‘propaganda.’ And this winter, I meet someone who live in this area. Someone that is not safe to be with in Russia.”
“Ah,” the man says, understanding dawning in his face. “Well, you know as well as I that the university hiring process works in cycles, and that it’s not the time of year we’re looking to hire new faculty.”
“I know,” Zhenya says, heart sinking.
“But,” the man continues. “I’ve looked over your body of work. It’s extremely impressive. We host a lot of different visiting researchers at the Ocean Sciences Center. I’d like to work something out with you. And in terms of next year, I’m very interested in expanding our course offerings regarding marine mammal studies, if the university can be made to agree.”
Zhenya ends the meeting elated and grateful.

They have a celebratory dinner after that.
“And another thing,” Marc-Andre says as they discuss Zhenya’s work opportunities. “If Sid says yes to making this public, you could probably have any position or facilities you wanted, anywhere.”
“If,” Zhenya stresses. “Up to Sid. And I’m think about this a lot. If this doesn’t work out, can just work on fishing boat or some other job like that. Anything, so I’m close.” Cath smiles and pats his hand.
“Explain it to me again,” Vero asks. “Why tell anyone, ever? Wouldn’t they just, I don’t know, put him a lab somewhere?”
Zhenya feels a wave of revulsion shudder through him. “No. Never. Die before I let happen.”
“Yeah,” Marc-Andre says, jaw set, his normally impish expression serious and set like iron. “But it might… change things. Force the hands of organizations like the U.N. Create a global movement towards conservation. Wake people up.”
They’re all silent for a moment. They all have the images to draw on, the dire statistics and the horrifying data that keep them up at night. But Sid didn’t ask to be an ambassador for his species. The decision has to be his.
***
Kris’s in-laws own a sailboat. She sails best with a crew of three, so Zhenya, Marc-Andre, and Vero start taking her out on shakedown voyages into the Bay of Fundy while Kris stays behind with Cath, whose due date is approaching rapidly.
They figure the boat’s the best way to find Sid once Magda reaches her feeding grounds. Her top speed is about eight knots, or fifteen miles per hour. Just fast enough to catch up with Magda if she isn’t moving at her full traveling speed.
They take a longer trip all the way around the southern end of Nova Scotia, to Halifax. The open water of the Atlantic is rough, nothing like the tropics. But they work together well, and start making plans for the long sail up the coast followed by the more than sixteen hour crossing to Newfoundland.
They spend late nights with charts all over the table, laptops spilling pools of blue light. Every night, Zhenya checks the data to watch Sid’s progress.
Closer and closer.
***
Zhenya nearly loses his mind when Magda lingers near Cape Cod. Then, before he knows it, the tags ping within a day’s sail of Cape Sable Island, right off the southern tip of Nova Scotia. He wants to take the boat out right away to chase them, but he knows it’s foolishness, putting them all at risk.
But they start packing, and prepare to follow, up past Cape Breton and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
***
Two days before they set sail, Cath delivers a baby girl. She and Kris name her Victoria. Zhenya goes with Marc-Andre and his family to visit, bringing along a little stuffed whale, because, why not.
Cath is exhausted but radiant, and Zhenya almost can’t look at Kris’s face as he watches his son kiss his new little sister’s downy head.
“I can’t help but feel that it’s...not good luck, exactly,” Cath says, when Zhenya is given the chance to hold Victoria. She’s so tiny and so light in his arms. “But just… it’s significant somehow. Her coming now.”
“Life,” Zhenya says, staring down as the baby blinks hazy blue eyes and yawns a miniature, perfect yawn. “New things starting.”
Cath smiles at him. “Exactly.”
Zhenya takes a dozen pictures for Sid.
***
The Atlantic feels like it wants to fight them,  either to cast them right out of its storm-shattered currents again or drag them down in pieces. But Vero and Marc-Andre have been raised on the water, and Zhenya’s learned fast. Magda’s slowing, moving less linearly each day. She’s stopping to feed in the rich waters, replenishing the weight she lost nursing Pasha in the Caribbean.
***
The day they come within a mile of the last satellite ping, the sky is gray but calm. Zhenya stays topside, binoculars trained on the horizon, watching for spouts. They put a speaker into the water, playing a looped tape of Zhenya’s voice. When they made the recording, Zhenya was too embarrassed to speak in English, so it’s in Russian. He talks to Sid, telling him how much he misses him, how the months without him dragged.
And then they wait.
***
There’s a thud on the hull. Splashing at the waterline. Zhenya’s binoculars clatter to the deck, he lurches for the rail, and Marc-Andre has to haul on the back of his jacket so that he doesn’t slip and go overboard.
Sid.
There he is, reaching his hands out so Zhenya and Marc-Andre can haul him up. There’s ice-cold water streaming off him but Zhenya kneels on the deck and wraps him in his arms anyway, buries his face in Sid’s neck, can’t stop the hot tears coursing down his face.
Until this very moment, a small, deep part of him had been certain that they’d never find him.
Sid’s making a low keening sound deep in his chest, and his hands are clutching at Zhenya’s jacket like he’s afraid he’s going to disappear. They move to the back of Zhenya’s head, to his waist, back to clutching at his jacket. He wrenches loose, but it’s only so he can take Zhenya’s face in his hands and kiss him, little biting kisses all over his face, followed by a deep press of his lips to Zhenya’s.
“Sid,” Zhenya says brokenly. Sid murmurs back the sound he makes for Zhenya’s name. His eyes are dark and wild. He leans forward and sets his teeth to the base of Zhenya’s throat, holding him in place.
When he pulls back there’s blood on his lips. His sharp canines scraped Zhenya’s skin.
Sorry sorry sorry, he signs wildly, but Zhenya shakes his head. He leans forward, and kisses Sid in the same place, right above the shine of his gold chain. He bites down too, and Sid jerks against him.
Mine yes mine Sid declares more than asks. Mine.
Yes, Zhenya says, and rests his forehead against Sid’s. Yes.

Experiences from Both Sides of the Data Science Hiring Table
You’ve spent years being educated, months skill training, weeks writing job applications, and days going through phone screenings. (At least!) Finally, you’re invited to an interview. How much effort do you put in to best prepare yourself, and is it enough? Be honest…
As scientists, we often struggle to highlight our transferable skills or tailor our academic experience for commercial roles. This can make it a challenge to get invited to interview and so we tend to postpone interview prep while we work on our skills gap and CV. Or worse, we presume that there is very little need for it because we fall for the clichés of “just be yourself” and “act natural”. But it’s naïve to think that interviewing is something you’re either good at or you’re not. Or that it’s just down to luck on the day. If the interviewers catch you off guard with their questions, there’s simply not much you could have done, right? Wrong. I’ve realised that knowing how to best prepare for an interview can make or break your chances on the day. “Practice makes perfect” is a much better cliché to arm yourself with. And while I have never heard of a perfect interview I would like to draw upon my experiences to date, on both sides of the hiring table, to help set you up for one.
You may have heard that people form lasting judgments within the first seven seconds of meeting. I’d like to dismiss that philosophical claim straightaway, at least in the context of an interview. The whole time you are being interviewed you are building a picture of who you are and how you fit the role. It’s a journey to establish your competence, skills and personality. If you get lucky and hit the ground running, then you’re on track to do well. If you have a weak start you still have the rest of the time to compensate. And even if you flat-out make a blunder; from human errors like a misinterpreted question to technical errors like a dead laptop battery, you can still salvage the interview by showing your resilience in the face of adversity. But it’s only by practising for such varied scenarios that you can give yourself the best chance of success.
In my experience, the strongest interviewees seize every opportunity to demonstrate their skills and knowledge. They have prepared and are ready to show this, but with a flexibility that keeps their responses relevant and engaging. They treat each line of questioning, not as an interrogation, but as a welcome prompt for showcasing their strengths. Their answers flow easily because they are confident in them, which results from good preparation. I always appreciate when a candidate is ready and willing to take me on a journey through their experience. And although some people are inherently good storytellers, I do think it’s possible for the rest of us to learn how to do this.
For example, take the time to prepare case studies as evidence of your skills, and script the main points you want to hit upon. I was taught in school to approach essay writing by preparing each topic with a “point, evidence and conclusion”. In an interview, the same logic can be applied using the STAR technique: establish the situation, outline the task, describe your actions, and explain your results. The interviewers need to be shown that you recognize the necessary skills, that you have experience applying them, and that you know how to realise value from them. Key to this is making sure you’re sincere and relatable so that the interviewers can picture you in the role. Try to frame every answer in the context of the team or workplace you were part of, to show that you understand your part in the bigger picture. If you have done your homework and practised speaking this way then it becomes easier for them to envision you in the role as they listen to you.
We may feel it’s a strength to come across natural rather than sounding rehearsed, but the point is that knowing what you want to say can really help when you have nerves to contend with. Consider that you’re probably entering an unfamiliar building to meet with strangers in a whole new environment. It can be understandably nerve-wracking. So do yourself the favour of having prepared the parts that are within your control ahead of time. If it makes you feel at ease, then memorise some key phrases and discussion points based on the variety of questions you might expect. Don’t worry if you think it won’t come across natural, because the whole situation is unnatural. For example, it’s always likely that you’ll be asked why you applied to this company and role. In knowing that, a rehearsed answer can help hide nerves and avoid rambling whilst showing that you’ve prepared and done your homework. It also helps maintain your confidence as you minimize the chances that a question may catch you unawares. And in so doing you will inspire your interviewers to have confidence in you too.
Try also to be somewhat empathic to your interviewers. You want to make it smooth and enjoyable for them too where possible. Employ active listening by practising ways to pause and think about questions. Reword them out loud and ask for clarification when you need it. Be careful about the length and relevance of your responses and watch for cues that you’ve said enough. If you feel you’re starting to ramble, stop and ask if you should go on. This helps keep the interviewers engaged and shows you welcome their guidance. Or when you simply don’t know how to answer something don’t be afraid to highlight it as a current limitation. Honesty is a highly valued trait. Plus, it shows self-awareness and humility. Neither the interviewers nor you will gain from attempted cover-ups, and it rarely works, but the alternative can reflect well on you.
Finally, recognise the opportunity for you to ask questions throughout the process. The interview is a two-way street after all. From the moment you arrive you should show enthusiasm by being interested and inquisitive in the people you meet and their team dynamic and workplace. It can be tiring but valuable. It again shows you are excited about the opportunity and that you have spent time preparing.
While these examples are somewhat general I hope they’ve helped you recognise the benefit of solid interview prep. As with any personal skill it can be hard to measure and takes time to get comfortable with. But there are many varied resources available to help you once you’re willing to dedicate some time and effort to the challenge. So, don’t just be yourself, be your best self. Your future self will thank you.

03.12.2022 - Figuring Out Life Slowly
Today is another Sunday
This is the second post I have made on this account. I decided to make an update post because of a response I got from my last one. I appreciate the time you took to respond and give me well wishes. I also feel that writing another post would give myself some more peace of mind as the last one did.
I had applied to some Ph.D. programs for the Fall 2022 cycle, and I also got an interview though I was rejected in the end. This rejection was not bad or anything though, and it actually gave me more confidence. To give a little context, I graduated from my undergrad with a terrible GPA of 2.79, and I am sure many would not even think about pursuing a Ph.D. with that kind of GPA. Of course, I was the same, but after writing my last post, I have grown and moved on from that. My life had revolved around my GPA since I was young, and I realized that I needed to stop limiting myself. This led me to applying to programs even though I was expecting automatic rejections due to my grade. To my surprise, I was offered an interview at my first choice school, and I had made it to the top 15 students out of 500+ applicants. I was so shocked about the interview invitation that I cried about it. In the end, I was rejected due to my research interest not matching with what the school and principle investigator was working on, and it had nothing to do with my other credential. I was also told that my CV and personal statement were among some of the best that they had received which ultimately led me to getting an interview. There were no mentions of my grades. Therefore, this opportunity and experience gave me confidence in myself, but is also made me realize that pursuing psychology may not be what I want anymore. The rejection cleared some weight off my shoulder and choices.
Currently, I am preparing my application materials for a Master’s degree in Data Science because I want to continue doing research related work outside of psychology. I am also applying to some different research related jobs because I am done working as a research assistant for free in academia. It’s annoying that academia needs so much assistant with their research, but can only pay assistants with “experience”. How lame is that?
I will list 3- year goals here, and maybe, I will have achieved them by the time I return to write another post:
1. Get a Master’s degree in Data Science/Analytics
2. Probably be drowning in debt, but at least, be in a good place mentally and paying debt properly
3. Have a job that is allowing me to pay off my debt (LOL)

Advance Your Career In IT with ITPathfinder
It's no news that the desire for the IT industry is expanding in today’s fast-paced world, which offers more career options for IT experts. However, in today's competitive job market, merely "being there" isn't enough to distinguish most IT specialists apart from the crowd.
The most perceptive technology consultants, like the firms they work for, have a vision of where they want their careers to go, as well as the goals, strategies, and tactics that will get them there.
You must have a strategy in place to develop your career or planning for a career change. Climbing the corporate ladder or taking on new responsibilities in your current role are both examples of career growth. Whatever you want to accomplish, you certainly aren't going to do it without a strategy to help you along the way. Making a career pathway will give you this plan as well as guidelines to assist you to advance in your profession.
Highest demanding IT skills in the 21st century
As the IT industry is expanding with time, these are the skills that are coveted:
1.Business analysis
2.Cyber security
3.Project management
4.Java
5.Machine learning
6.Quality assurance
7.Data science & analytics
8.Mobile
9.Web development
Considering the nature of rapidly shifting trends in information technology, years of experience may not always lead to advancement in a profession. To boost the total worth, IT professionals must establish that they can keep up with developing technologies.
Soft Skills
Soft skills are a collection of personal attributes, behaviors, and social attitudes that enable people to interact effectively, collaborate efficiently, and solve conflicts smoothly. Individuals with decent soft skills have great situational awareness and emotional intelligence, allowing them to negotiate challenging work circumstances while still achieving positive results. Given their wide range of applications, it's not unexpected that employers are paying more attention to a candidate's soft skills during the interview.
If you are planning to advance in your career, you must enhance your soft skills. Some necessary skills that are critical in career growth are mentioned below:
Improve your communication skills
It won’t matter how skilled you are in programming or designing if you lack essential soft skills. Take the risk of offering to give a speech or lead a conference, even if you are nervous. This increases your visibility as a leader and helps you prepare for a supervisory or managerial post in IT if that is your aim.
Develop problem-solving skills
Many applicants try to diminish issues because they don't understand that businesses recruit people to solve problems. Difficulties, potholes, and roadblocks are all part of the job and provide opportunities for learning. The capacity to apply your knowledge to solve problems and develop practical solutions demonstrates that you can handle and exceed in your profession. Building a soft skills CV requires talking about your errors and what you gained from them.
Interpersonal Skills
Building and maintaining relationships, generating rapport, and using diplomacy are all examples of this broad area of "soft skills." Giving and receiving constructive feedback, being patient and respectful of others' perspectives, and empathizing with them are all part of it. This is one of the most important examples of soft skills since it is essential for forming teams that are built on a solid foundation of trust and accountability.
Enroll in a marketing and sales course
Many IT professionals despise sales and marketing since it relies heavily on intuition, opinions, and communication rather than logic and task-oriented skills. However, communication and the ability to sell yourself and your ideas are essential in business. If you're a task-oriented person like most IT professionals, it could be a good idea to take or study a marketing/sales course to learn more about the art of selling. I'm confident you'll find it valuable in your IT career.
Work on goals that stimulate growth
Find a method to care about your daily tasks, whether you're at your ideal career or just keeping busy until something better comes along. If your boss's goals aren't intriguing enough, discover something in your personal life (preferably, something that will enhance your career as well, such as learning a new skill set or taking a course) that you can only do once you've accomplished your work tasks. Employers will notice your passion if you make your daily work interesting in any way.
Consider what's most essential to you in your current job and what you want your future job to look like. What you desire now may not be the same as what you want in three to five years. However, having a long-term vision will assist you in defining your idea of success in the workplace.
Take the time to thoroughly study and understand your roadmap. You can make however many short-term goals you like, but more is preferable than less. It's necessary to extend your long- and short-term goals to your professional roadmap now that you've discovered them. It will be easier to keep on track to achieve all of your objectives if your roadmap is more detailed.
For any field, you must plan separate goals for your professional as well as personal life.
Use SMART goals in your life to stay focused and pursue your goals. SMART stands for :
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Relevant
T - Time-bound
Your personal goals must also be planned with the same method and you can include the planning for the following:
1.Your health goals
2.Your financial goals
3.Relationship goals
4.Personal development goals
Reach out to your manager
Usually, there are a lot more prospects for promotion than you think. Speak with your boss to learn more about the company's employment opportunities. Share your objectives with them and see what they can do to assist you in achieving them. You're placing yourself on their attention by talking to your management and making them aware of your goals. If they're encouraging, they'll offer you assistance and guidance in order to help you achieve your objectives.
Ensure that management is aware of your accomplishments. You have every right to expect recognition for going above and beyond. When it comes to job advancement, individuals frequently assume that their superiors know best. Unfortunately, many employees are only recognized when there is an issue. Stay in touch with the supervisors and keep exploring the opportunities that you might not be aware of.
Network efficiently
The chances of you advancing in your career are directly proportional to the number of efficient people you have in your network. Working individually and excelling in a specific skill helps you get started, but to accelerate and gain momentum, you need to create and expose yourself to a professional network and use them to your advantage.
Networking may seem like an exercise in futility to IT workers who are focused on programming code, using tools, the technological stack, and meeting deadlines. Networking, on the other hand, can become an important aspect of a successful career advancement strategy, the crucial term being "strategic."
If networking is now a valuable factor of a professional growth strategy, it must involve more than just attending events and chatting to strangers. For successful networking, you'll need a strategy that includes doing your research ahead of time and developing a tactic for nurturing those new connections.
Take command of your own career path
Companies today are significantly less nurturing than they once were. Even top achievers may lose their jobs if a corporation fails a quarterly earnings target and is forced to cut back. The moral of the story is that you must always be in charge of your own life. You never know where your job will take you or which firms you will work for, but your knowledge and expertise will be solidified in your brain and body wherever you go.
Help everyone grow
Every human being enjoys a sense of accomplishment. This is why the top project managers and IT executives have figured out how to make people work as well as projects. Teamwork is an important aspect of this. The payout for the team members and each person's sense of self-worth is substantial when everyone feels involved in the project.
Don't give up and stay committed.
Even if you do everything on this article and more, there will be moments when a teammate who appears to be less capable advances in an organization, leaving you behind. Don't be discouraged.  Even if the odds are stacked against you, perseverance will help you make progress.
