ATLA! Avatar au ramblings, cause I need them out of my skull:
[Disclaimer: this is basically just Avatar, but if there were benders. there are no rules. god is dead. I wear his crown. we go by my rules now, even if they break atla canon. canon is a suggestion now]
each clean tends to be made up of benders from two of the elements, people from the clan can carry both traits, even if one is dormant.
for example, the Omatikaya are made up of earth and airbenders. both Mo'at and Eytukan were airbenders, yet their daughter Neytiri was an earth bender, and Sylwanin was also an air bender.
Humans are rarely benders, at least compared to the Na'vi, as the destruction of Earth led to the loss of benders, but when they are benders, they have only been fire benders. this includes avatars. the RDA specifically targets and recruits fire benders.
Fire benders are rare on Pandora. very few clans produce fire benders. and with the destruction the humans and the RDA have caused, fire benders are almost taboo, especially in the forest clans that faced the brunt of their efforts.
Jake is a fire bender, he is heavily disconnected from the idea of spirit, fluidity, or nature within his bending. it gets better as he lives with the Omatikaya, but old habits die hard, so he'll ways be a messy fire user, and his fighting style is messy, MMA like, the reckless assault of a soldier and not an art. he doesn't truly incorporate his bending into his day to day life either, it's like a gun to him, not a part of his spirit and being.
Tumblr media
Neytiri is an earth bender (and in my world, they can bend plants, because fuck you). while she is known for her combat on Ikran back, she is just as deadly in face to face combat, as she is a heavily offensive fighter, and she will punch you in the throat with a dagger she pulled from the earth. but in a more casual day to day, she uses it to get around the forest, to weave and craft, to cook even. she makes something solid like stone and wood look as fluid as air, and something as delicate as plant life look deadly and jagged. and as a healer she uses it not only to cultivate and refine healing plants, and even bone bend.
Tumblr media
a fire bender and an earth bender, have 3 kids:
Neteyam is an earth bender, he presented quite young, maybe 5 or 7, and he takes after his mommy, with the added aggression of Jake's fire bending attitude. he inherited less of his mother's likeness to plant bending, but can magma bend extremely well for his age, keeping that same fluidity. but as much of his life is taken up by combat and training, he's also a crafter and has plenty of little siblings bringing him rocks and asking him to make them beads, so he's also doing a lot of that. (he has attempted to bend a tree fort into existence and fell through it and on his ass, trust, I was there)
Tumblr media
Tuk is an air bender. she's only presented around 7, and only in little gusts, so she hasn't cultivated an exact style, she can only really play with little gusts of air, or go gliding about on her glider, but only when a sibling is with her, in case she falls. she's also just an agile little thing.
Tumblr media
Lo'ak (for angst value) doesn't present for a long while, he makes it to nearly 13 before presenting, and he ends up being a fire bender.... which did not help his self image, in any manner. not only is he the demon blooded son, the one that never lives up to Jake and Neteyam, who looks like a freak, but now he's a fire bender too? just shoot him now.
Tumblr media
Kiri, the child of Grace, who was not a bender, and Eywa, is an air bender (she's already Pandora Jesus, I'm not putting her through being the Avatar as well). she presented at 5, it never seemed like a big thing to her. Neytiri found her floating and that was that. she is heavily connected to her spirit, so she can astral project, and her world, which makes her very hyper sensitive to her surroundings. she uses her air bending to carry stuff, be more spry (in the comics she tends to fall behind her siblings, even Spider, who is much smaller than her. her air bending gives her the leg up to help her keep up). even after she gains an ikran, she tends to go gliding or just. floating. for funsies.
Tumblr media
that leaves my son, my baby boy, Spider:
Tumblr media
I'm making him the fucking avatar because I can.
[more bullshit below, this is just very long and I'd feel bad posting this behemoth and clogging people's feeds]
he is Eywa's first Sky child, her golden boy, and he is the bridge between humans and Na'vi— he is Na'vi in all but body, and human in all but soul —so she knows if anyone can soothe the tensions ripping her world apart, it will be him.
he starts out as a fire bender.
no one is shocked, even though he gave off his first sparks as a toddler. his parents had both been fire benders— Quaritch had mastered combustion, and Paz was known to give off smoke when pissed —this gets him even more ostracized than he was in canon from the get go. no one wants much to do with the fire bending son of Quaritch. no one can truly trust him, even as a child.
who's to say when he will become the wildfire everyone assumes he will become? who's to say he's not dangerous, even as a child? especially without the help of a fire bending master to aid him (could Jake do it? yes. do I think Jake would commit to that long term? absolutely not).
despite this, the Sully kids are his siblings, from the moment they meet. he's their big brother, watching out for them, promising his flames as their shield, forever and ever. no one will ever hurt them. that they don't need to be scared of him, because he'd burn himself to a crisp before burning them. and his will is so strong, he's never accidentally burned them like he has others. his spirit knows better. it's strong enough to render the heat to nothing.
so the second Spider can leave the confines of Hellsgate and go out into Eywa's jungle, he is more than pleased to do so. he isn't judged there. the animals don't flinch away from him or stare at him like they're seeing secrets from the future.
he bends in secret, first with fire, just dancing a flame over his hands, slowly gaining trust in himself and his control, and developing his own style of bending, one similar to the airbenders of the clan, as that's the closest thing he has to go off of.
and if he has dreams of Toruk like creatures, showing him the art of fire, when he falls asleep in the grassy clearings of Eywa's world, he won't question it.
and when he hears whispers of 'try it' when he thinks of attempting to bend a different element, even just pretending, child's play, he listens, because he trusts the soft voice in his ear.
he bends air first. while not rare, those who bend air are considered special, connect to the spirit of Eywa. it's a sign. well, it would be had anyone paid enough mind to the boy to see it.
air bending comes naturally. he'd been watching those around him air bend for years. he'd mimicked their movements while playing with his siblings. it feels right. like it was what he was destined for (Eywa just needed time to manipulate his soul). it keeps him alive in the jungle, not only cause it allows him to take riskier paths and such, but also because it allows him without an exopack.
earth comes next. again. he'd watched earth benders for years. longed to manipulate the forest like them. to create instead of destroy. wanted to heal instead of heal. wanted to use brute forced over his flames, because his flames were looked at with fear, while the other boys trained their bending and were cheered on. he can work plants as if it was as easy as breathing. weaving them together into forts and hide outs and supplies.
water is last, and seeing as it's the opposite of his birth element, he has no mentor, and not even a faint clue on how it works, it is his weakest. but he has an affinity for healing, even if it only works on little cuts and scrapes, maybe a bruise if he's lucky.
by twelve he is mostly living on his own in the woods. it's near impossible to keep him in the compound anymore. he's not interested.
no one has any idea what he is. Spider can't even fully believe it himself and all's down spirals of thinking he's giving into his human greed, somehow (don't blame him, he's just a little guy, a dumb little guy who doesn't know maths, and grew up around people who all but hated him. let him have a dumb dumb complex).
the only people who have a slight idea are his siblings; he bends too much on instinct. he reached out to catch his siblings, shifting the ground beneath them just a tad, or shooting a vine around their ankle or using a swift puff of wind to stop their descent. he heals small cuts while thumbing over them, rolling a little bead of water on the broken or bruised skin. he brings them up into elaborate tree forts.
his siblings only keep from saying something because of the look of pure terror he gets on his face when he catches himself.
as time goes on, he becomes more open with them. by 15 it's common knowledge amongst them who and what Spider is, but he still won't let them tell the clan. but he has Kiri and Neteyam to help him with his air and earth bending, as they can regurgitate their own lessons back to him, which makes him stronger over all, even if he continues to use his own methods.
Jake and Neytiri only find out the night he was taken; when he gave his all to protect his baby siblings from the recoms, all fire benders, and exposed the level of power he held... and was subsequently taken for.
and then he gets adventures with his papa and the squad. that he is so so so so so happy about (kill him).
bonus info that doesn't fit into the vaguely timeline coherent ramblings above:
Spider is a healer by nature, it's in his heart and soul. so while he trains himself for combat, it's simply natural for him to want to fix things, to help people, to give himself and his power over if it means he can soothe one ache in his people. so Spider learns all of the healing arts he can. he develops his own even. refines bone and blood bending to heal people. uses the scientific understanding of things that he picked up as a human to make better medicines, etc.
speaking of blood/bonebending. my boy is going to snap at some point during his captivity and fuck some people up with that, because he knows the dogs of the RDA deserve it. perhaps it's after Neteyam's death that triggers it. or maybe the Tulkun hunt/attack on the Ta'unui. it's something, something that has him going in a carnage spree.
he will train with Mo'at and Ronal when they find out about him. Mo'at will knowingly pass him over — she knew early in he was special, but knew, in terms of his learning, the forest was not his place, for there was too much pain. but she would watch out for him as she had his whole life, in her own ways — while Ronal will become one of his footholds in life. a place where he will always feel like he can drift back to.
~~~
that's all I have for now. it's a shit ton. I have maladaptive daydreamed part this point, but I'll probably be back on my bullshit eventually. I'll have more on Q and the water tribe and what not.
Do you think Jake ever ran out of stories to tell his kids and so just decided to use like religious stories? The kids don't know. How would they know? So he continues telling these stories until Norm somehow stumbles upon him doing it one day like:
Norm: What are you guys doing? Little Lo'ak: Dad's telling us about old human heroes! Norm: Nice, which ones? Batman, Superman- Little Neteyam: Moses! Norm: ... Norm: Jake Jake, desperately: I ran out of stories. They're insatiable. Norm, sighing and sitting down: Yup, Moses. Did your dad tell you about the parting of the ocean yet?
Baby Spider was absolutely littered in bruises and cuts from trying to keep up with his siblings but never complained. He’s always worn the injuries like a mark of pride, like somehow they’re the stripes he doesn’t have because they come from his siblings and they don’t see him like a human, they just see their brother
Hi how are you? If you want, could you tell us what your headcanons would be for what the Sully children's relationship would be like with a human/avatar mother who was mated with Jake and Neytiri? Thank you very much, have a great day!
I can see a lot of possible outcomes for this one! So here ya go! Enjoy!
P.S: Reader will not be given a name in this one, instead she will be called "small mama"
Pinnacle protection
-------------------------------
Pinnacle motherhood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Right off the bat, the whole family loves their third mother, second mate. Jake sully couldn't ask for a better family, and better mates. Especially his little human mate. Neytiri will agree with him, while yes she has her children to hug, her little mate is just what she needs. Something small yet full of love just for her.
Now like any trio, there is a balance between the parents. Jake is the head of the family, the brains with his clever ideas. Neytiri at times can be the brains but most muscle due to her skills in fighting and hunting. And their beloved human is the heart of the family. Keeping everyone together.
And like any child, the sully kids will have favorites. And their favorite is their amazing human mother. She is the most fun, loving parent any child could ever ask for. Are they not getting their way with Jake or neytiri? To mama it is! And mama will always fold by the simple look of her kids.
Another thing about their favorite mama, they all believe she has the power to read their minds. How else would it explain she knows their next move?
Lo’ak and tuk can recall so many instances where they were barely forming an idea only for their mama to say “dont even think about it” or “it is not worth the trouble”.
For neteyam, as he is the oldest he does try to be a good example for his mischievous siblings, along with holding so many responsibilities, but he can always count on his small mama for anything. Small mama consoles him, talking about anything neteyam has his mind about.
Unlike Jake or neytiri who neteyam has to put up a strong warrior face, with a small mama he can revert back to being a baby with her. He feels safe and be a kid again with her. And small mama always called him her “little baby boy”. Neteyam won't admit it but he likes it when she calls him that.
For kiri, she definitely adores her small mama. She is closer to her third parent than she is with neytiri. Not to be mean or anything. But with Jake, Kiri can talk about what odd things happen around her, ask her about her mother and stuff but with her small mama. Well, she can express far more with her, be free to say anything not be judged upon. Kiri can dare say small mama understands her more than anyone in the world.
With tuk, the baby of the family. Why, she loves to be the taller one, it makes her happy. Of course she would never tease her small mama that she is taller, but small mama would call her “tiny tuk”. A name tuk loves and will glady flex it for some reason.
If tuk can't go somewhere with her older siblings, small mama would personally take her anywhere she wants to go. As long as it is safe. With small mama, everything is fun and never boring. Tuk loves the times where her hair is braided or she braids small mama’s hair.
Now, if small mama would use her avatar, nothing much would change. Except that now the kids will demand piggy back rides. Tuk or lo’ak would be front of the line for that.
Hunting would be easier and much more fun with jake and neytiri, running, riding their ikrans, less risk overall.
Even with her avatar, she is still short compared to her two mates. She is smaller than Neytiri by 9 ½ inches. Not something she is super thrilled about. No matter what body, she is still small mama through and through.
Small mama is forever grateful to live her best life with her family, loving them and saying her thanks to Eywa for blessing her to be the best of her two worlds. Through hardships, through trials, small mama has a mighty heart and a roar of an ikran. Yes sometimes she might be stressed or frustrated but life is not perfect. Small mama knows that all too well. But there is nothing better than what she has.
Yeah, Izzo actually mentioned that panel specifically! We technically don't know for certain whether that particular character was meant to be her, but I'd say it's a very good reasonable guess and definitely the closest thing we have! Certainly gonna be my headcanon for now, until/unless we get something a little more concrete.
Speaking of which, I went ahead and transcribed the part of the interview about Norm, tagging @theoptimistictabby again because you're gonna want this, Norm fans are gonna be hype for this one haha. I'm gonna put the full thing under a cut because it's just a tad bit long, but the tl;dr bullet points are:
Izzo really wants to do a Norm comic at some point, exploring his past and/or the gap between A1 and A2
Norm's family probably won't make a direct appearance in the films, but might appear in other media such as comics
One of his kids is named Popiti and she, along with a sibling, do appear in The High Ground; he mentioned the panel with Norm playing the violin specifically
The majority of the Olangi clan died in the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains and the survivors were absorbed into the Omatikaya clan. Norm's mate was one of these survivors and he met her in during the aftermath of the battle.
By the way, for those who didn't catch it on the other reblog, Izzo also confirmed later that day via this comment that Popiti and her sibling are indeed Norm's biological kids, not adopted!
Tumblr media
...soooo with all that in mind, if we take that violin panel you posted and zoom out a bit:
Tumblr media
I think there's a pretty decent chance that those two kids in the front holding hands are Popiti and her sibling! :D
Transcript from interview:
Mako: In the Visual Dictionary and The High Ground, it is hinted that Norm has a family. Do you know if we will ever meet them? Izzo: Yes! So, keen-eyed viewers…well, meet them on film, like, visually? Probably not. That will probably be, like, a lore, derivitive media sort of thing, but keen-eyed viewers…his children appear in The High Ground. They’re in there! There’s a couple panels where you see them, like when the Sully family return, and they have that kind of dance party, it’s at the top of book 1, I believe, where Norm is playing a musical instrument or something like that…Popiti and his other kid are there. They’re in that scene. But yeah, I would love to more with that; Norm is a character that….and actually this is something that again Ray, our creative guy, he’s talked about doing stuff about the Avatar program, the AVTR program, from a comic book perspective, he’s had some really interesting ideas…but Norm as a character is one that I’d really love to do some comic book or some other media about that’s either…y’know…I’d love to do something that’s between A1 and A2. What is he up to, what’s he doing, and y’know, touching a little bit on his past: where’d he come from, his study to be in the Avatar program, his relationship with Tommy, the meeting of all of the Na'vi, and kind of all that stuff…I think that it’s really rich. There’s some really meaty story there that I would love to do. But yeah, going back…the question, probably not on screen, but in other media, would love to. Would love to give it a shot. Mako: Well, I can imagine you just set off a flurry of comic book pages of people going to grab their copy of The High Ground to go digging… Izzo: Yeah, probably! Mako: But you’re right that the comic book format, the way that you guys have set that up right now, lends itself really well to anthology stories and character studies, I mean, the very first one was a Jake character study in a lot of ways, and we had Mo'at, and we’ve got So'lek in the latest ones, of course, so….yeah, it could be really interesting to see a Norm-centric story emerge in that format. Izzo: Just right now, just for the room…and I don’t know if it’s in the Visual Dictionaries…but in our documentation at work...this is all subject to change, so, y’know, of course, I’m gonna say it, but Jim might have different ideas…his mate, his partner, is one of the Olangi clan that he met during the post-Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains, one of Akwey’s people…and because Akwey’s people essentially got destroyed during that battle, the Omatikaya clan sort of absorbed a lot of their remnants, their lost, because that’s what happens during the wartimes…you saw that’s also what happened to So'lek’s clan…they passed away and then other clans abosorbed their survivors, and the Olangi clan came and lived with the remnants of the Omatikaya in their yurts on that border of Hell’s Gate between Hell’s Gate and the Omatikayan rainforest. So yeah, he was….we have it in our paperwork that he’s mated and partnered to an Olangi woman. Mako: Oh, ok yeah. That’s not lore that I personally knew, so that’s really really interesting, and again further stuff to potentially explore in a character study. Izzo: Yeah, super fun!
Norm family lore drop!!
so for Avatar fans who don't already know, Kelutral's "Omaticon" online convention (streamed on their Twitch channel) is going on this weekend, and the kickoff panel earlier this evening featured franchise loremaster Josh Izzo.
Some may remember this little panel in the High Ground, featuring Norm with a Na'vi child addressing him as "Daddy":
Tumblr media
In the Visual Dictionary, there's also a very brief mention that Tuk has a best friend named Popiti.
Tumblr media
...so here's the fun bit:
Izzo confirmed that this "Popiti" is in fact Norm's kid!!
Apparently Popiti also has a sibling, and her mother/Norm's mate is from the Olangi clan (which makes sense given that the Visual Dictionary mentions Norm having a bunch of Olangi trinkets).
ngl I love this lore drop but now I have so many more questions also!! How old is Popiti (I assume close to Tuk's age since they're best friends but there's still some wiggle room there so)? Is her sibling older or younger and what's his/her name? If they're Norm's biological kids, do either of them have avatar features like Kiri and Lo'ak? What's Norm's wife's name, what's their story? Norm didn't get his consciousness permanently transferred like Jake did, so how does him switching between two bodies affect things? PLZ I NEED TO KNOW
Tumblr media
@theoptimistictabby thought you'd be interested in this one ;)
btw let it be known that I speculated all these things like two years ago, my mind is still reeling that what I thought was merely wild wishful-thinking speculation at the time turned out to be CANON lol
Tumblr media
#of course we still don't know how old they are or how far apart they are#Popiti is presumably close to Tuk's age since they're best friends#in that panel her sibling appears to be around that same age too#but seeing as this is High Ground Vol 1 idk how trustworthy those kind of art details are 😅#high ground vol 1 makes Tuk look way older than she should so. yeah#they also both appear to have Na'vi features instead of Avatar features but again. high ground vol 1#which sometimes accidentally gives Neteyam five fingers soooo. yeah again idk how definitive that is 😅#i suppose thematically it'd probably be better if neither of them have avatar features since that'd play more into Lo'ak's character arc#feeling so different and whatnot#buuuuuut at the same time I also think it'd be so interesting if at least one of them DID have the avatar features so!! idk#as far as ages go...hmm.....#I think I'm gonna headcanon that Popiti is roughly a year older than Tuk#mostly because given the huge age gap between Tuk and Lo'ak...#...I think it'd be really funny if the reason Jake and Neytiri had Tuk was because they caught baby fever from Popiti lol#as for her sibling....hmm....let's try bridging the Lo'ak/Tuk gap a just a bit by saying Popiti's sibling is maybe 1-3 years older than her#therefore 2-4 years older than Tuk and 3-5 younger than Lo'ak#(all of this is headcanon of course and subject to change if/when we get more concrete info)#(please mr. izzo can we get the names of the sibling and mate pleaseeee 😭)
death in the family / sully family x human!daughter/sister!reader
synopsis, the sky people return and with them, destruction and distress. lo’ak, kiri, tuk, and spider find themselves in trouble, as expected.
(1) / (2) / (3) / (4* - ur here! ☆) / (5)
+ chapters with an * beside it means that it’s following a plot line as opposed to the scenarios i usually write :)
warning, gun fights and bow&arrow fights, looong chapter
it was a stunning night on pandora, though nights like these were far from uncommon. what was out of the ordinary was the absence of jake and neytiri in your home. having three kids under the age of 2 didn’t allow for much free time, much less time for dates, but the payoff came about… decades later. was it worth it? they would say yes.
“now, no mischief, you hear?” jake said firmly, giving everyone a look as he moved an accusing finger to his youngest son. “that means you especially.”
lo’ak rolled his eyes. “yes, dad.”
“y/n’s in charge.” jake grunted as he finished equipping his belt. neytiri glided across the wooden floor behind him, picking up her bow and arrow. “not that it should matter much. you’re all supposed to be in bed already.” he continued.
he finally turned around, flashing a big smile. he ruffled the heads of each of his kids. neytiri followed, doling out sweet goodbye kisses.
“be good,” she reminded them before accepting jake’s open hand and running off into the night.
the room was silent for a minute. then lo’ak sprung up, clapping once. “well. i’ll see you guys later.”
“lo’ak.” you said his name as if it were the reprimand itself. “they haven’t been gone five minutes.”
“so? it’s not like you ever tell on me.” he grinned, making pinching motions to your face.
you swatted his hand away. “maybe i should start.” you grumbled.
“he’d tell on you.” tuk said, pointing to neteyam.
lo’ak scoffed. “i know.”
neteyam raised his hands in surrender. “it’s not telling, it’s warning. because somehow you always find trouble that i have to clean up.”
“nobody asked you to ‘clean up’ after me.” lo’ak said bitterly.
neteyam laughed dryly and gave his brother a knowing look. “nobody has to ask. that’s how it works.”
“whatever.” lo’ak mumbled and turned to the exit. you shot up and blocked his path.
“you’re not going out right now, lo’ak.” you glared up at him.
he gave you a weird look. “but you always let me go—“
“yeah, when it’s earlier. it’s twilight out there, and… i just have a bad feeling.”
“just five minutes?” he pleaded.
“no.”
he groaned, storming off to his pod and throwing himself into bed. you rolled his eyes at his dramatic exit.
“how do you get him to listen to you?” neteyam asked as you returned to your seat.
you offered him a sympathetic look. “i don’t think anything i say would help you, yam. you’re… you. the beloved first son. he’s just… lo’ak.”
he frowned.
“there’ll be a time where he realizes,” you squeezed his arm in reassurance. “that you’re not an enemy, but a rival. not an extension of dad, but a brother. but he’s young. all of us are. don’t take it personally.”
neteyam gave you an appreciative smile. in a world where a lot rested on his shoulders, the littlest of them all was the only one he could truly lean on. “okay.”
“okay.” you smiled and stood, patting him. “we should go to bed. where’s kiri?” you spin around, counting lo’ak and tuk snoozing.
neteyam towered beside you and jerked a thumb behind him. “she’s been sleeping.”
you shook your head, chuckling. “should’ve guessed.”
neteyam jumped into bed with a long sigh. he settled into his pod and yawned. “night.”
you climbed into your own bed. “night.”
the night sunk deeper in darkness and you thought you were asleep when you were gently jostled awake. it was a steady rumble, similar to jake's heartbeat when he rocked you to sleep as a child, or neytiri's throat when she sang.
when pandora groaned long enough for you to get up and investigate, the last thing you felt was comfort.
new stars in the sky. ships decelerating.
with a threat raining down from above, you wondered what new misery the future would bring.
. . .
"move, y/n." kiri bumped past you, carrying a bowl of salve she whipped up for injured soldiers. "you're going to get trampled."
you glared at her back as she left. one thing that wasn't so great about growing up was three of your siblings entering the teenage stage at once. chaos and snide quips seemed to be the norm.
you knew you were a fish out of water and didn't appreciate the reminder. every time you stepped outside your family tent, you were in someone's way. on the ground, you stood a chance—even outperformed some na'vi children. in the sky, living at high camp in the hallelujah mountains, you were at the bottom of the bucket.
you could scale the large branches and vines in your sleep, but something about the extreme height handicapped you. unlike the rest of your family, you didn’t have a banshee to fall back on.
you were 19 now. neteyam was 15. lo'ak and kiri were 14, and tuk was 7. why were you being treated as the baby—worse, the deadweight?
you worked for 15 years to push your humanness away, yet it was back more obvious than ever.
you glanced off into the distance, wondering where kiri ran off to. she completely missed grandmother's tent. you surged across the base, following until you spot her meeting up with lo'ak and spider.
their chatter immediately diminished when you approached them.
you eyed them suspiciously. "...what are you up to?"
"nothing." they all said in unison.
"we're going out!" tuk chirped from behind you. ignoring lo'ak's menacing look and silent warning to shut up, you turned to your youngest sister.
"out? where?"
she shrugged. “just out to the old wrecks or something. i dunno.”
you raised an eyebrow, turning to lo’ak. “aren’t you grounded?”
lo’ak scowled. “from flying. doesn’t mean i can’t walk.”
“and dad knows about this.”
“…” lo’ak avoided your eyes.
“mom, at least?” you asked, exasperated. this boy kept making the same mistakes and wondered why he always got in trouble. “grandmother?”
“we’re just going on a walk.” spider butt in, hoping to ease the tension.
“a walk into an enemy zone!” you gave them all incredulous looks. “you got told off for being reckless and you’re just gonna do it again?!” you reasoned with lo’ak.
just the other day, he was getting yelled at for almost killing neteyam in a supply run. how he was able to block out all caution was beyond you.
he groaned and ran past you. “we’re not gonna do anything dangerous, don’t worry. come on, guys.”
“bye y/n!” tuk sang as she followed her middle brother. spider and kiri gave you apologetic looks but still ran along with them.
you watched them leave. you almost hoped they would get into trouble just to put some fear and reason into them. you shook the ill thoughts from your head.
should i tell dad?
you didn’t want to infringe on the trust they put in you, but you were positively 100% certain they would find themselves in a sticky situation—it was an uneasy suspense you couldn’t ignore.
you let out a yell of audible frustration. you swiped your bow, arrows, and knife from the tent and discreetly followed behind them.
. . .
the minute i get over my fear of heights, you told yourself, i’ll be unstoppable.
for now, you settled for carefully inching your way down the hallelujah mountains.
you lost sight of the group, but at least you knew where they were headed.
your feet finally touched pandoran soil and you had to take a moment to appreciate its familiarity. the rocks of high camp did not embrace your feet like the dirt did… it felt like a welcome home.
on the ground, you were much quicker. you bolted through the terrain, scaling trees and bounding between branches. coming to an abrupt stop at the old shack, you crept as close as you could while remaining concealed by foliage.
there was a time this place was your home. steel floors that went clank clank clank when you ran across them. you remembered when grace moved her lab to keep away from quaritch’s prying eyes, carrying you along with the crew.
your trip down memory lane was cut short when you saw blue heads poke into your peripheral. from both sides. your sisters, brother, and spider were crouching out of view while foreign avatars entered the clearing and started to rifle around the old shack.
the avatar in lead looked particularly familiar. but the guy you were thinking of was dead.
“we were never supposed to come down here,” kiri whispered urgently.
hm. wondered who could’ve told you that. you rolled your eyes lightly.
you began to assess the situation: there was no way you could take on those avatars alone. if your suspicions were correct, they were highly trained recoms. no one knew where you were, and the avatars hadn’t noticed the gaggle of children ogling at them from a distance.
you reached for your throat. shit. you left your comm at home. luckily, lo’ak had the same idea.
“devil dog, this is eagle eye. over. i got eyes on some guys…”
you didn’t want to drop down and startle them into giving their position away, so you lay in wait until jake inevitably instructed them to pull back.
but of course the idiots had to bicker.
“see, i told you.”
“shut up.”
“i know a quick way. guys, come on!”
“it’s almost eclipse—“
“shh, tuk.”
“you’re gonna be in so much trouble.”
“kiri, stop.”
so consumed by your annoyance, you didn’t notice the movement in the bushes—
“ah!” tuk shrieked, her neural braid yanked back by one of the recoms.
panic flared up your spine. an icy-hot flash radiated up your neck to your face. you slung two arrows on your bow, pulling the string taut. you inhaled deeply.
“tuk!” kiri spun around, racing back to her position. lo’ak whipped a knife, lunging.
THUNKTHUNK.
your arrows pierced the shoulders of two soldiers, who collapsed to the ground.
“na’vi in the trees!” the commander yelled out. the remaining soldiers aimed their guns to the greenery above them, spinning wildly to locate you.
the one holding tuk relaxed his grip, and tuk sunk her teeth into his skin.
“run!” you screamed at the kids, already firing another arrow and ducking out of the way as bullets followed you.
“y/n?!” lo’ak yelled.
“come on!” kiri snapped, grabbing lo’ak and tuk’s arms and racing off.
THUNK.
another soldier dropped in pain. the arrow dug into their arm, and they snapped the long wooden stem in half.
“what the hell is it?!” the commander yelled.
“don’t think that’s na’vi, sir. i think… that’s a human chick.”
keep it together, you silently begged. you’ve done what matters already. hopefully those idiots are on their way home.
you were aware that leaving the recoms out here, alive, was a mistake. but you’ve never killed anyone before. hunting prey, sure, but people? the real thing was so different. your hands were shaking—none of your arrows were as fatal as you’d hoped.
“it’s just one girl,” the commander hissed, snatching a gun and letting some shots fly. “come out, sweetheart. we’re on your side.”
you clamped a hand over your mouth to silence the frightened squeal that threatened to erupt when bullets hit the bark behind you.
you jumped into another tree, hiding behind the trunk. i need to get of here—
“y/n.”
you whipped your head around. there they were, back where you just rescued them from. “what are—“
“we’re not leaving you.” lo’ak said heroically. they were on the ground, hiding behind bush.
your valiant, naïve baby brother. you don’t think he understood how much harder it would be to sneak out as a pack travelling together. if you jumped down now, there was no guarantee all of you were making it.
you wanted to scream in frustration. why doesn’t this boy listen? you softly banged your head on your bow. think think think thinkthinkthink
“just jump down, quickly!” lo’ak waved his arms as if to coax you.
the rustle of leaves was more than enough for trained recom ears, and in the next moment, everything you achieved was taken away from you just as quickly.
“get them, get them!”
“stop fighting,” one recom snarled, kicking behind lo’ak’s knees and forcing him to the ground.
“kiri!” tuk wailed.
“mawey.” kiri tried to soothe her. be calm.
“shut up. don’t move.”
the four kids were seized, hissing and baring their teeth. your bow and arrow was shot from your hands, the near miss of the bullet leaving a trail of fire across your arm.
you along with your weapon clattered to the grass where the kids were kneeling. you stared at them in a state of panicked helplessness, your mind freezing at the worst moment.
you found the courage to step forward just as a punch landed straight across your face, knocking you out.
billions also comedy gold presenting winston as a scapegoat for abuse culture fans when it's like but hey it can't be actual scapegoating if you Enjoy It or consider it Justified or experience Reassurance from Its Opportunity For A Group Cohesion Substitute For A Cohesion Based On An Inherent Equal Degree Of Belonging, The Absence Of Which Allows For, Encourages, Reinforces, & Rewards Scapegoating
it can't be Bullying if someone's Weird or you Just Don't Personally Like Them or Nobody's Actually Stopping You, Maybe At Least If They Don't See Too Much Of It, Maybe Others Are Supporting It
it can't be Abuse if you're just doing things Normally or are Following Rules or Aren't Feeling Malicious And Aren't Getting Divine Revelations Otherwise and probably it's just that a lot of abnormal people are being whiny &/or unfair &/or the Real malicious ones. kinda just like how that scapegoat is the real person ruining everything and really just forcing you to treat them like this
#might note hardly limited to billions; the series doing bog standard suffocatingly common [Being Normal can't be abusive] replication#nor is their Unaware Replication Of [it can't be ableist if i'm not reacting to ppl who walked up & said Hi I'm Autistic]#well abuse & traumatic treatment can't be Everywhere. like how umm sexism can't be everywhere. neither can white supremacy. ableism. cmon.#oh please not everything can be political. Just Be Normal. which makes it ''apolitical.''#now we all agree abuse can't ever be made palatable; insulated; easy. now ppl doing it never said it wasn't That bad.#if they did they must have been maliciously lying. whereas when i say it can't have been That bad; i mean it :)#and if that person says it was; well they must be lying. or clueless. or a pussy. or scheming to destroy me. Must be. Gotta#& we wouldn't be able to look around & see contexts of imbalance. who's vulnerable. who's life gets smaller. who's supported automatically#who's supported if someone even posits they May have done anything like No; Impossible; now instantly definitely get their ass#you can just go on all day about the ''um i'm just the Realistic Normality vessel'' arguments made boundlessly in bad faith#being like ohh Everyday Interactions / ''Normal'' Semi/Public Situations Can't Be Uncomfortable Imbalanced Dangerous Abusive....#if they are that must be So Rare & created only by Rare Bad Actors with Malicious Mens Rea (itself a great concept to make any act Okay)#something framed as Extreme must be an outlier. could never be part of everyone's everyday life & some much more than others.#could never be what's defined as Normal (associated with Superiority) like how Abuse can't be shit i'd think of as Normal#like how damn if ya don't just wanna kill the autistic coworker and everyone agrees & would clap & cheer if you did And That's Great#you'd have to feel Weird / Abnormal about it! b/c Weirdness & Abnormality is what's bad!#like the autism or the cptsd (the Real abuse can only be: inflicting the existence of a victim's survival skills on Superior Normals)#or whatever else gets pathologized with Polite ABA arguments about how it's not ''social skills'' so hide it or suffer the consequences#winston billions#having that perspective too like oh [our blessed successful conformity] [their barbaric xyz Issues]#if the best you can argue for or against smthing is as Normal or Weird respectively like. no. what's behind that door#the authority figure/s who must be supported lest this all crumble. vs the ruinerrrrrr#billions recognizing winston & tuk the next most shitted on would probably get along & have a mutually supportive friendship#billions also recognizing that mutual support better not be Allowed to get that far. lest this all crumble#like look see we Knew it. we knew the bottom tier ppl who don't really belong in the group who we bully & scapegoat are Always Ruining It.
