A Brother| Chapter 1
Tumblr media
It was 12’ noon at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor in Liyue. Hu tao, the owner of the Wangsheng Parlor, was doing her dutys. Checking for service, polishing the coffins, ect. Zhongli, Hu Tao’s employee, walks through the door.
“Miss Hu Tao, the supplies have been ordered” Zhongli says in a smooth and calm tone.
Zhongli was a tall man that stood at about 6’2, dark brown hair fading to a ember color. He had Ember eyes the color of Geo. He was in his late 20s
“Thanks Mr. Zhongli!” Hu Tao said preppy as always.
Hu Tao was a young girl, she was about 5’6. she had long brown hair that faded to red in low pig tails. She had Orange Red eyes. She was in her early 20s.
“Uh, is Miss Hu Tao here?” A man asked.
“Thats me! Do you have a new client?” Hu Tao asked eyes sparkling.
“Uhm..No you have a letter..” The postman said nervously.
“Aww, thats good to I guess” Hu Tao grabbed the letter out of the postmans hand. The Postman bolted out the door.
Hu tao became quiet as she read the letter. Her mouth open agape.
“Miss, Hu tao..is everything ok?” Zhongli asked worried for his boss.
“He’s coming home…” Hu Tao said her voice a gentle whisper.
“What was that?” Zhongli asked raising an eyebrow.
“He’s Coming Home!!! Can you believe that!!! After 5 years of him going around Tyvet hes coming to Liyue!!!” Hu Tao beamed jumping around the office.
“It sounds like wonderful news, but who exactly?” Zhongli asked, crossing his arms.
“My older brother, Y/n!” Hu tao beamed as she showed Zhongli the letter.
“Dear Hu Tao,
Apologies for the late letter, ive been busy these past few weeks. But I decided im finally coming home. By the time you get this ill be already on mu way home.”
-love Yn”
Zhongli read the letter carefully.
“That must be exciting” Zhongli voice was gentle but it was hinted with some curiosity.
Hu tao nodded happily.
“Oooo! I should make him his favorite dish! Mushroom pizza!” Hu tao gushed.
“That sounds nice, but we still have work to do” Zhongli sighed.
“Hehe oh right” Hu tao chuckled nervously.
It was now 4’ noon, Hu tao went out to pass out flyers, which was a weird way to spread the palor but it works.
Zhongli was at the desk, checking schedules, writing notes, ect. Foot steps were heard and stopped in front of Zhongli.
Zhongli’s head trailed up and a unfamiliar but similar man looked at Zhongli.
The man stood around 5’8, he had brown fading to red hair, he had similar flowerly red orange eyes. He had clear eye bags and his eyes were dull.
“Hello, welcome to Wangshen Funeral Palor” Zhongli said with a smile.
“Wheres Hu tao?” The male asked almost in a demanding tone.
Zhongli’s eye brow furrowed.
“She is out right now, but I can help you” Zhongli said keeping up the calm tone.
“No, I’ll just wait for to be back.” The male mumbled standing of to the side.
Zhongli was about to say something on how she was out, again.
“Y/n!?” Hu Tao was standing in the door way with a huge smile.
“There you are” The Male now known as Y/n stood up properly.
Hu tao ran and jumped into the males arms.
“Its sooo good to see you again!” Hu Tao laughed.
Zhongli watched with confusion, the same man who seemed so dull just a minute ago now, seemingly full of life.
“Oo! Right Y/n! This is Zhongli, my employee!” Hu Tao let go of the male and turned to Zhongli.
“Hu tao getting help, thats something i’d never expect from Miss. ‘im going to do everything myself’” Y/n chuckled his voice soft when talking about his sister.
“Hey! Give me a break I was 6!” Hu Tao huffed playfuly.
“It wonderful to meet you Mr. Y/n” Zhongli said in a well matter tone despite their first meeting.
“Just Call me Y/n, I don’t do that fancy Mr and Misses talk” Y/n scratched the back of his neck.
“Hey Zhongli can you close up? I want to take my brother to dinner before taking him to the inn, though he could just stay with me” Hu Tao huffed.
“Hu, as your brother i’m going to say this in the nicest way possible, your sleep walking makes it very hard to sleep cause you would just stare at me” Y/n stiffled a laugh remembering waking up to hu tao in his face as a kid.
“I’m not that bad! anymore” Hu tao mumbled the last bit.
Zhongli had to admit it was quite the show to watch the siblings banter.
“I’ll close up you go enjoy your dinner.” Zhongli said with a slight bow.
“Thank you! Come on Y/n theres this great place..” Hu tao and Y/n slowly faded as they left.
Zhongli began straighting up for the night.
It was now 9’10 at night Hu Tao was walking with Y/n to the Wangshu Inn.
“Theres an adeptus staying at the Wangshu Inn, Xiao maybe you’ll meet him!” Hu tao burst with excitement.
“Mm, I doubt it, I heard Adetus can be pretty private, unless he thinks I’m a threat then maybe” Y/n look to the side.
“You? A threat? Pffft- People would be crazy to think you would do harm” Hu Tao started to laugh.
‘Its best she doesnt know then’ Y/n thought as they got to the Inn.
“Room under Y/n” Y/n spoke to the lady at the desk.
The lady nods “here your key, room is up the stairs and to the right”.
“Thank you” Y/n slightly bowed his head and turned to hug his sister. “I’ll be over once I get up” Y/n smiled.
“Okay! I’ll probably be at the palor but I wont be free till 2 so go look around Liyue! Theres so much to see!” Hu Tao smiled brightly.
Y/n chuckled and nodded before waving goodbye and heading to his room. Y/n shut the door before letting out a deep breath he didn’t know he was holding in. Y/n looked at this hand, a faint red mark layed in his palm. He closed it.
Y/n saw the bathroom and thought a nice warm show would clear his head.
By the time he got out it was around 10’. Had he been in there that long? Y/n thought still lingered so he walked out of his room quietly. He headed up the second pair of stairs to the deck.
He got to the rail and stared for a bit, thoughts that lingered slowly left as Y/n got comfort from the outside air. That was intill he felt a pair of eyes staring at him from the roof. Y/n turned around and looked up to fine, no one. Y/n turned back and gazed over the field, it felt so familiar but so different.
It was late so with one last deep breath Y/n wondered back to his room feeling the same stare on his back once more. Once his head hit the pillow he fell asleep.
“Y/n?” A young girl called out. “Whats going on?” The girl asked as she watched the flames of there old town dance. Y/n just stood watching there whole life burning.

hello! I was wondering if you could write platonic yandere hcs with hu tao, venti, kokomi (separate)! I really like your writing!! Hope you don't mind if i invade your inbox from time to time hehe
Tumblr media
venti.
venti is always around you. he’s always pestering you to go out drinking with him or to listen to a new song he’s been working on! he seems scatterbrained as ever as he disregards your responsibilities, dragging you to hang out with him.
on a more personal level, venti is scared for you. he had a good friend once. the lose of that friend made him paranoid and protective. if he’s always around you, he can always protect you.
Tumblr media
kokomi.
kokomi loves your company more than anything. after a long day of work, she just wants to sit with you and talk about her day. she loves it when you sit in her office as she works. you make silence enjoyable for her.
she’s constantly worried about you and whether or not you’re taking care of yourself. she’ll always be careful of your needs. she’ll take you out to eat or buy you some treats catered to your taste.
Tumblr media
hu tao.
hu tao is extremely possessive over you. almost territorial. she wants to be your only friend, she wants to be the one you spend your time with. she’s always plotting on a way to keep you around her.
her efforts to isolate you won’t stop until she feels all your attention is on her. she’s willing to resort to whatever to reach her goal.

I honestly adore your bitey series, and saw your suggestions were open. Do you mind if I suggest Arlecchino, Beidou, Hu Tao, Rosaria, Yanfei, Kuki, and Ganyu for the Bitey Series? I'm super interested in your hc ideas gkjddfgkl (Don't feel bad if you wanna not write for some of the characters I just listed gjkfdkfjgljk I just went with six because each of your bitey posts also have six so I used it as a baseline jkfgjkdgjk) I hope you're having a good day/night!
Thanks so much for the request!! I’m more than happy to do this, I really had a lot of fun writing the bitey reader series, something about it just makes my little heart happy <3 It seems like you actually submitted seven here, which is alright!! Thank you for noticing about the number of characters i usually have per post, it means a lot to me kjdkdfs
I think i may have to give Yanfei, Shinobu and Ganyu a miss for now since I’m not familiar at all with writing them, but I’ll keep them on my list, don’t worry!
Content: Gender neutral reader who bites as a sign of platonic affection.
Arlecchino is used to being bitten. She works with children who will bite for a large myriad of reasons. She may not like it, but she understands it comes from a place of not being able to verbalise a certain emotion. At first she’ll be concerned that there’s something wrong, and will try to pinpoint what it is. Eventually, she’ll move on to being mildly annoyed, shooing you off, and then finally just settling for it and realising it’s just a way of you asking for attention. If she’s busy, she may brush you off and move away, but she’ll make a note to give you the affections that you’re pining for when she has a moment. If you have a particularly close relationship with her she’ll let it fly if she knows you’ve had a bit of a rough/long day.
Beidou finds it kind of funny, though she doesn’t entirely understand it. She’ll just laugh like you’ve told her some kind of hilarious joke, shaking her head and tutting her tongue as she pats you on the head and jokes that some kind of shark or something must’ve gotten on board while her back was turned. Though if you consistently do it, she may ask if you’ve gotten into the liquor (she’s got a few crew members who get a little… bitey, once they’ve had a few drinks), or kind of semi-awkwardly try to redirect you onto something (or someone) else. Eventually she just resigns to her fate though, and you get to nibble on her to your heart's content! She’ll just sort of phase it out after a while.
Hu Tao kind of adores it - she lives for non-traditional acts of affection and the like, so will almost immediately try to get you back. She’ll turn it up a notch and just CHOMP down on you, giggling all the while. She thinks it's a very silly and fun way of communicating affection, and it feels strangely natural to her, as do most ‘unorthodox’ ways of making people know how much she likes them. She’s fairly well known for doing things like this in her own unorthodox way, and once she knows you're open to it, you'll often find yourself on the receiving end of one of her rather 'quirky' ways of showing affection, which include tying things to the ends of your hair (usually ribbons, feathers or charms for warding off spirits or bad luck), pocketing some of your belongings while you're not looking or just grabbing ahold of you or your clothing and clinging tight.
Rosaria is entirely baffled, and maybe even a little offended. She’ll pull away sharply and give you a stern look, but won’t directly say anything about it. If you try again, you’ll earn an annoyed sigh. Repeated attempts will reward you with progressively more annoyed reactions, eventually escalating to you getting bopped (mostly gently) on the head with a book or paper she has on hand. After that, if you do it again, she can and will just walk away. She doesn’t understand and doesn’t really have a heavy desire to try and understand - all she knows is that it’s bothering her and she doesn’t like it. If you're in a situation that she isn't able to walk away from, you'll likely find yourself getting scolded or grumbled at - don't get too upset though, she isn't really that mad, and will forget about it pretty quickly.
Please don't repost, steal, copy or otherwise plagarise my writing! This includes posting translations to other sites.

OC x CANNON event, thingy. . ?
### ﹒﹏﹒✦﹒`[Noriku Reiko]`
✸ ── age :: 16
✸ ── gender & prns :: female, any prns
✸ ── sexuality :: Pansexual
⌣   ⊧    🩰   ❀
✸ ── personality ::
she’s erm, a little full of herself! ^v^ She is often quite blunt with her words, not really afraid to say what’s in her mind, No matter their role, status. Although some might view her as rude and such, it did not deter her from acting as a ‘savior’. Saving others was what mattered to her, and as long as people were grateful for her services, she would continue to do so. Good or bad, her reasons for saving others were irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
> Noriku's brutally honest nature often led her to point out others' flaws without hesitation. She was not afraid to express her dislike for certain individuals, and could be quite spiteful about holding grudges. That, combined with her tendency to be hard to please, made her a rather difficult person to get along with.
✸ ── background ::
> In her childhood, Noriku often felt overlooked and even ridiculed. As a result, she craved acceptance and adoration from others, to the point where she started behaving in a false and pretentious manner. She put on a pretense of being a "kind and loving girl" when she started attending school, even if it was not her true personality. She figured that this act would please people even if it was not authentic.
> However, now that she has gained popularity and admiration at school, she has become self-centered, vainglorious, self-absorbed, impolite, and unscrupulous. She manages to get what she wants through trickery and deceitful means, regardless of the consequences.
✸ ── trivia ::
➜ pink is her favorite color .
➜ she dislikes intrusive people .
➜ she likes physical affection
➜ speaks in third person.
✸ ── relationships :: Noriku is fine with whoever, as long as they like her, she doesn’t care.
✸ ── Appearance :: a little lady of 16, she has light pink hair, which is often held in pig tails. With some of her hair sticking out behind her neck. Her eyes are dark - bland pink.
“Well, Noriku doesn’t dislike much anything, honestly. Noriku gets whatever Noriku wants already, so why should Noriku dislike anything? Noriku likes herself best.”
Platonic yandere, I doubt you want to write pedophilia.
Genshin please! I don’t really mind any character.
Congratulations on the 1k by the way! I love your writing ^^
(I hope I did this right…)
I have stated it before, but I am able to write romance for character 16 years or above, I feel since I don't write NSFW that it's okay.
Anyways, hope you'll enjoy😄
Trigger Warning: Yandere, Obsessive behaviour, Possessive behaviour
Hu Tao: She immidiatly figures out Noriku's real personality, Hu Tao is a trickster, she loves joking and playing pranks, and she is especially good at reading people, but even if she knows how Noriku really is, she just finds it really cute.
Hu Tao will tease, taunt and pull on every string to get those cute angry reactions out of Noriku, she will probably hate Hu Tao but she can't do anything about it, Hu Tao will threaten to reveal to everyone how she really is, and then no one will want to be around her.
Since Hu Tao is always around Noriku, everyone mistakes them as best friends, Hu Tao doesn't refute it cus it's true, Noriku is her best friend and it doesn't really matter what Noriku wants, Noriku is stuck by her side with no way out.
"I couldn't help but notice you weren't by my side yesterday, wanna explain that Nori... I'll forgive you this time, it better not happen again, okay"
Barbara: She worships Noriku, every word, every move and literelly everything she does is worshipped by Barbara. Noriku is like a goddess to her, she even quit her daily prayers to Barbatos and is praying to Noriku instead.
Barbara believes whatever Noriku tells her, and she doesn't believe it if anyone told her what Noriku's true personality was, she thinks they are trying to ridicule her precious goddess, so she ignores every warning she gets.
Barbara is clingy, wanting to hold Noriku at all times, the best part is that Noriku doesn't seem to mind it at all, Barbara sticks around Noriku so much and threatens the other ones around Noriku that Noriku doesn't notice that the only one left by her side is Barbara.
"Noriku doesn't understand, where is everyone?"
"Oh they just can't see how great you are, don't think about them too much, I'm here after all"

Thinking about Hu Tao and Kazuha again....
I barely see anyone talk about them anymore I miss them so bad can we talk about their friendship potential. Can we PLEASE talk about their potential.
I wanna see Hu Tao visit the Alcor and have dinner with the crew and her and Kazuha bounce poetry back and forth off each other and I want Hu Tao to show Kazuha all her favorite little haunts with that little silly hop in her step she always has. I want them to go fishing together and Hu Tao falls asleep due to being comfortable and Kazuha doesn't have the heart to wake her up, so he watches both fishing rods and cooks dinner from their catch and they watch the stars come out that evening and just talk about anything and everything.
I want them to play more TCG together and just have a silly time ....
I want Hu Tao to put her hat on Kazuha just to see what it looks like and grin toothily and tell him he looks dashing and he just smiles like this c:
Kazuha teaching her how to play music with leaves like he does...them singing together randomly when helping with chores on the Alcor maybe..
Just. Them hanging out. Please.

My team!
Noelle
Hu tao
Kujou Sara
Sayu
Tumblr media
Note: Hello Hello~!
Team Comp: Noelle, Hu tao, Kujou Sara and Sayu
Team Comps Request list: Status: Closed
Sara didn't remember how many times she sighed after she was placed on this team. She didn't get Hu tao’s eccentricities really and occasionally found them annoying. But as long as the girl was serious in her fights it wasn't like she could complain here. Sayu that girl is always sleepy and when you are gone the girl would always hide away sleeping instead of training but Sara knew the girl’s potential, helping them in their time of need with healing and such. Noelle is the only girl that Sara respected to a high standard when she heard about the girl’s training regiment.
Really that day was the day when all the soldiers under Sara started to suffer so much. Sara had asked Noelle for a list of things that she does for training so that Sara could pass it to the soldiers telling them it was their new workout. It was for the sake of the Raiden shogun and you, after all, she has much faith in her soldiers that when they become strong they too could protect you.
But really the team is a mess sometimes, when Hu Tao would try to drag Noelle into the crazy things that she does and occasionally when you are not there and the team gets into trouble Sayu isn't there to help with healing and support when Noelle couldn't. Sara sighed again, but at least... at least they are serious when you are around.

The two gods ruled benevolently across Teyvat, Life and Death, Life was worshipped and praised by both the Archons and Humans, Death was casted aside because they thought they only took the lives of innocent creatures and brought nothing but loss and grief, tho it was lonely without anyone other than your sibling to get along with you got used to it.
As you were assigning people to their deaths you met a young brunette running towards Wuwang Hill, you wonder what she could be doing at such a dangerous please so you follow her to make sure she is safe.
“Grandpa? Are you here?” “Ah, she lost her grandfather, pity” you started to walk away until she tugs your sleeve “Excuse me, the ghosts said you know where my grandpa is, Is… he here?”
You pitied the child to have lost someone dear to her at a young age but sadly it happens to even at some point of life “Your grandfather has already passed, you have my condolences” “I know that but is his ghost here?” “No, it had already crossed to the afterlife, I’m sorry” she looked as if there was nothing left to live left for her so maybe there was something you could do.
“What would you like to tell him?” “Huh” “Your grandfather, what would you like to tell him?” You summoned a typewriter with some paper and asked the young child once more “What would you like to tell your grandfather?”
Her face lit up and started rambling about what she wanted to say and when you were finished with her letter she asked “How are you going to give it to him?” “I’ll follow him and give it to him” “ but he’s dead isn’t he” “I have my ways” you flicked her forehead as you were about to head out until she snatched your arm and clung to it.
You understand what she wanted so you stayed by her side until a few days later she woke up to her room with a letter by her side saying “I sent to you grandfather”

Childe and Hu Tao are two characters that I can’t help but want to see interact with Venti and Xiao so much.
Like Childe is ready to fight always, but he and Xiao share strong protective instincts; they just need someone to bridge that gap between them (because I am also one of those people that believes Xiao would not like Childe at all upon their first meeting).
Interestingly, I think Childe and Venti could go either way. Either they’re super passive aggressive with each other, or they’re like old chums that rile up everyone else around them.
I want to see Hu Tao and Xiao interact because. Well, he thinks she’s funny and she has a (I feel) similar issue of being misunderstood upon first impression.
Yet, Xiao “tolerates” her.
Could he do something similar for Childe when he sees how much of a family man he is?
I want to see Venti interact with pretty much everyone, but Venti is often typecasted to have a similar personality to Hu Tao and Childe (a bit eccentric, mixed public opinion, loves a good joke, but sticks to you once you’re friends), and (while I often headcanon canonical Venti to be a bit more gentle than some of the more eccentric personalities given to him) I’d love to see the shenanigans the three would get in to.
Childe and Hu Tao could be like my platonic duo (the besties) to my OTP and I wanna see them all make ridiculous decisions with decidedly one brain cell shared between Venti and Xiao and Venti doesn’t care enough to always use it.
Or maybe angsty headcanons where Childe is obviously more ruthless than the other three, despite Hu Tao having no filters when it comes to talking about death, Xiao having some restraint in how he uses his “ruthlessness,” and Venti having witnessed who knows what over having centuries of living experience.
Truthfully, I think they all have angsty sides to them, like personality/life-altering events (tho I haven’t listened to Hu Tao’s backstory much), so I feel there’s just a lot of potential between these four to explore.

Practicing ♪
("AU": Rapper!Yanfei)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love imagining Hu Tao listening to Yanfei while the latter is practicing before a rap performance. Just enjoying the moment, the lyrics and Yanfei’s voice. The world around them is calm, and they both forget their problems.
Reminder : Unless precised, my Yanfei&Hu Tao art can be seen as platonic or romantic !

Where the qingxin bloom
Characters: Zhongli (Parental), Hu Tao
Genre: Heavy angst, no comfort
TW: Blood, injury, death (reader), mourning
500 words
AN: Please read the tags. Really detailed/explicit stuff, I wanted to practice writing injuries. No comfort whatsoever. I actually wanted this to be 'a nightmare all along' but I wrote too much for that to work.
You were bleeding out in his arms, onto his land. The dirt beneath you was black with blood. He watched as you struggled to move. He tried to hold you still, any movement was excruciating for you. He could guess that from your screams.
“Please, stop moving. All you need to do is stay awake. Please.” His voice was gravelly and hoarse.
Your eyes couldn’t focus on him. “I’m…” You took a shallow breath. “I’m… sorry…”
“Treasure, you have nothing to apologize for.” He tried to keep his voice even. He couldn’t let your last memories be of his pain.
“I’m… too.. weak.” Each word required a shallow breath as you struggled to make the word.
“No, no, you’re not weak, you’re so strong.” He wondered where he went wrong to make you apologize like this.
“A couple … of demons…” More tears welled up inside your eyes. You coughed, and kept coughing, spitting up blood. Tears streamed down your face, which twisted in pain. You couldn’t even scream.
His eyes teared up, for the first time in centuries. The right thing to do was to end it now, so you didn’t have to suffer any longer. He couldn’t though. There was something deeply unnatural about a child dying before their father. He knew your time would come, but not like this. When he dared to think about it, he imagined you asleep in your bed, face covered in smile lines and crow’s feet. Not like this.
“My child, remember I love you. Just hold on to that, please.”
You turned your head towards him in response. “Not…” You paused to breathe. “Your… fault. Love…” Your voice faded to nothing. He could feel your heart stop pumping, your lungs stop breathing. Your body was cold before he managed to move.
He cradled your body in his arms as he walked to the funeral parlor. It was after midnight so no one was there. He washed off the blood and dirt and dressed you in white funeral robes. He wondered what flower he would dedicate to you. Qingxin, maybe.
Hutao came in to see him standing there, motionless. She darted next to him to prank him but as she did she saw your body. She understood immediately.
She allowed Zhongli to plan your funeral. No expense was spared and it was open to everyone. Anyone could come in to pay respects. Many did, a flow of people in and out, but Zhongli stayed.
He didn’t sleep. Had he been human he would have died from lack of water.
He continued to visit your grave once a week for a year. By then the qingxin had grown and flowered. There was now a sea of them, blanketing the peak. He wanted you to have a beautiful view.

Your sister almost immediately suggested so the moment you two’s grandfather left the house. It was rare for you two to be home alone and whenever it does happen, Hu Tao always takes her chances to do whatever she can’t do when he’s home. And obviously she drags you into her shenanigans because, of course, she doesn’t want to be caught and grounded alone.
“Sis, we talked about this.”
You could only sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose. Truth be told, you still don’t know why your grandfather bothered buying a gaming console if he’s not going to let you two play it. But you knew best that to question your grandfather is akin to asking a wall; you get no answers but rather, even more questions. But you can’t deny that you did want to play it. But being Hu Tao’s sibling has taught you to become more responsible…more or less.
“Yes we did! What does that have to do with anything though~?”
As much as you love her witty remarks, they’re mostly the ones that land you two in trouble. And you wish you could say you enjoy being in trouble with her - she tries to lighten things up, sure, but that usually makes things worse. So like it or not, you had to learn your lesson from so many of you two’s misadventures. It looks like she hasn’t learned anything though and you’re pretty sure that it’s a choice. Your sister is one of the brightest people you’ve known; it’s just that she tends to get bored easily and so does a lot of stupid stuff just for the thrill.
“Hu Tao.”
“That’s me!”
You sigh again. That tone in her voice indicates that she’s not changing her mind any time soon. You surrender - after all, a little gaming couldn’t hurt, right? Screw whatever ‘video games exposes kids to violence’ stuff your grandfather’s always spewing. Plus, it’s not like you two are gonna be playing anything actually violent-
“C’mon, let’s play some Mortal Kombat 11. I miss killing people.”
Ah.
You don’t remember how the heck you two manage to get a copy of that game considering it’s one of the most, if not the goriest game you two have ever had the pleasure of playing. But you join in anyway because what else are you supposed to do? You ask yourself that as a rhetoric question but you can’t help but feel there’s an actual answer to it. But you shrug it off as still being reluctant to do this.
A few hours pass and you two are still in Mortal Kombat 11, nuking it out without a care in the world. Well, except for one care, which is what if grandpa sees this? But you’re having so much fun, you don’t mind being grounded for life and your sister most likely feels the same. Even then, you have this nagging feeling at the back of your mind that there’s something wrong and that everything’s going a little too smoothly.
“I think… I forgot something.”
“If you forgot then it probably wasn’t important.”
“Yeah, you’re right.”
You casually chat with your sister over it during your gaming break. Now you’re convinced that there’s nothing wrong and that you’re just paranoid for no apparent reason at all. Your irritation increases when your sister claims yet another victory over you. But her joy is fleeting - your attention both snap to the suddenly ringing home phone. You run over to it, not knowing what to expect. You pick the receiver and raise it to your ear…
“Hello? Hello hello?”
“Grandpa?”
Now you really want to know who taught him to use a phone - how did he get the home number? Whose phone is he using anyway? Public phones aren’t a thing anymore and he doesn’t have a phone; he’s always refused to use one because he claimed it too complicated. So the only possibility is-
“Aha, it works! Well, it better work. I didn’t spend thousands just for this smartphone thing to not work.”
Ah.
“Grandpa, what are you talking about? How did you get this number? Where are you?”
“Agh, you ask too many questions, kid! Your sister was the one who gave me the number. And I’m coming home from the mall. So no more questions! But more importantly, have you cooked the rice yet?”
Oh. So that’s what it was. Oh no. You turn to flash Hu Tao a quick glare and she responds with an expression that could only express “oops”. You turn back to stare at the phone in shame. But of course you slightly shifted the blame to Hu Tao for not reminding you in the first place. You couldn’t even think about how your grandpa’s answering your questions earnestly for once.
“Um, of course I have! I cooked the bestest rice only for you, my beloved grandpa, ahahaha…”
You quickly lie and hear him laugh on the other side of the line. Thankfully, it seems he has fallen for your lie. As he laughs, you turn your head again towards your sister’s direction and signal for her to rush to the kitchen. She does a brief saluting pose and runs to the kitchen. Lord knows you can trust only so much of her when she’s in the kitchen. She tends to get a little too creative for your own liking sometimes.
“Good, good! That’s my grandchild! Anyways, I’ll be back in a jiffy so you two just wait for me like the good grandchildren that you are, alright?”
“Okay, grandpa.”
You add a nod although he couldn’t see it. He hums happily and hangs up without saying goodbye. You put the receiver back down and run to the kitchen, hoping that it’s not already entirely on fire. And luckily enough, it isn’t. Because your sister is too busy trying her best to wash the rice properly.
“Ai-yai-yai, how could you forget such an important thing, dearest sibling?”
“Like you remembered in the first place.”
“Let’s not sweat the details, okay? Help me out here.”
“Hah, can’t even wash the rice right. And you call yourself Asian?”
“Oh, shut it, you.”
You two bicker off the next few minutes away as you cook up some rice. Though you two are in a somewhat frenzied predicament, you can’t help but smile at how silly and ridiculous you two are. You laugh and she follows - how contagious. So contagious, you foolishly hope that some of that laughter infects a bit of the rice. Maybe it’ll brighten up your grandfather’s mood even more than it already seemed and let you two off the hook this time around.
But well, even if you two are grounded for life, at least you two cooked the rice before he’s home, right?
“I’m home!”
You two yelp. The rice is barely cooked enough to be edible. And you two forgot to turn off the gaming console earlier. ‘In a jiffy’ was too jiffy for you two’s liking. Before you two can do anything about the sticky situation you’re in, your grandfather waddles into the kitchen. He eyes the two of you and the steaming rice cooker in between you and your sister.
“We, uh…”
Hu Tao attempts to make up an excuse, sheepishly rubbing the back of her neck to hide her shame. You only gulp, awaiting the worst punishment that could ever befall a pair of siblings who were innocently distracted by video games. You wish you could at least predict what’s going to happen to the two of you but the thing is, you two’s grandfather is as predictable as a gambling game. You never know what’s going to happen.
“What’s wrong? You cooked the rice, right?”
He asks and you two only tilt your head simultaneously in confusion. That’s all he has to say? You have your suspicions but you start to have a little bit of hope. Maybe all that laughter really was as contagious as you thought it was.
“Well, yeah but…”
“Oh, you two. Come here.”
He says and yet he is the one to move forward to wrap you two in a group hug. This increases the two of you’s confusion even further. As you expected, as predictable as a game of chance, like a throw of the dice. Mayhaps it is no coincidence that your grandfather is a big fan of board games himself.
“You’re not mad at us?”
Your sister innocently questions him, shooting him her most genuine curious look. You look at him too, wanting to see his reaction as well as hear his answer. He lets go of the two of you. His joyful smile turns menacing in the blink of an eye as he utters his next words, though he fiddles with his brand new phone cheerily.
“‘Course I am! It’s just that I’m more happy than angry. This smartphone thing is more useful than I thought.”
Ah.
“So…are we grounded?”
You dare yourself to ask him. You would ask more questions if you could but you don’t want to risk upgrading your punishment from a simple grounded phase to…who knows what? As far as you’re concerned, your grandpa is as creative with punishments as Hu Tao is with her culinary skills.
“Of course you are! Go to your room!”
You’re disappointed but at least it wasn’t anything beyond that. Even your sister seems to breathe out a sigh of relief. The lack of any heavy punishment gives you courage - and so you will yourself to ask another question.
“Uh, how long are we grounded?”
You ask and your grandfather seems to ponder on that question, which is a rarity. Usually, he’d announce “one week!” without any hesitation. So you were reluctant to ask at first but this time around, asking him something is seeming to bear fruit (finally).
“Hmm…two days.”
He decides and needless to say, both of you siblings’ jaws drop to the ground. He went from one week to two days just like that? Who was this old man and where is your real grandfather? You’d ask but before you could, your sister interrupts first.
“Just two days?”
“What, you want more? I can add more.”
“No thank you, bye grandpa, love you!”
Hu Tao rapidly replies and drags you by the hand to your shared bedroom. She slams the door shut and flops onto your bed like nothing ever happened. You sit beside her and stare at the opposing wall, processing what just happened. You two say nothing; simply side by side, ruminating on today’s happenings, with the occasional sound of fighting game characters screaming and grunting coming from outside your room. Ah. So your grandfather’s the perpetrator all this time.
“We got lucky, huh?”
Hu Tao breaks the silence after a few minutes of gazing intently into your bedroom’s wall, its color faded of old age. You two may be as young as the technology in your little house, but the abode itself is almost ancient as your grandfather. Even then, you never saw it as a flaw; old or not, it is the house you and your beloved sister have spent so much time in by being clowns, forgetting to cook the rice and getting grounded. You look to your sister fondly and sigh, a relieved one this time.
“I guess we did.”
