Oogie often boasts that he doesn’t feel fear, but this isn’t the whole truth.

As the Boogieman, he has an absence of conventional fears to detach himself from those he has to terrify with his powers. For example, Oogie doesn’t fear heights, confined spaces or storms, but he does experience moments of ‘anxiety’ and terror which affect him significantly.

Usually, these moments concern flashbacks from his past which become increasingly vivid the more he ignores them. They could also be to do with his family/familial friends; if he feels they are threatened. Another reason he may become ‘anxious’ is when he feels he is at risk of ‘slipping back’ into his old ways (i.e. using fear as a weapon or a means of twisted fun) when he’s too engrossed in his scaring. 

When Oogie is ‘anxious’, he will talk to himself and become very distracted or he will lash out in anger. Sometimes, he will throw things, scream and push others away; other times, he will try and talk about other things to take his mind off what is worrying him, or he will try and surround himself with the ghouls/people to avoid being completely alone; he also becomes increasingly protective of his family/familial friends.

There is only one other being that truly petrifies him: Jack Skellington. Since Jack proved himself in the Scaring Competition against him, Oogie has been intimidated by his talents. One of the reasons he despised Jack so much during their rivalry was because he was able to make him feel fear for the first time in his (after)life.

i just finally started watching LOK and i know that one of Korra’s biggest offenses, in a lot of peoples minds, is that she “allowed” her connection to the past avatars to be erased and ended the cycle, etc. etc. after watching how it all plays out, though, I really do think it makes the most sense for that to have happened. I don’t think it’s Korra’s fault that the avatar cycle has restarted at all.

Wan was alive at the end of the last 10,000 year spirit cycle, the last time spirits and humans coexisted, and he ultimately fused with raava and closed the spirit portals during harmonic convergence to keep vaatu at bay and keep the balance between the spirit world and natural world the best way he knew how, to keep them separate. the humans weren’t, at the time, able to advance, let alone coexist between lion turtle tribes, with the constant threat of the spirits. even after closing the portals, Wan spent the rest of his life trying to keep the physical world from falling apart. and it’s been the avatars duty to do that from then on, Wan’s bravery and raava’s spirit lives in every avatar that exists from then on. there are roughly ~100 generations of people (or 81 avatars) between wan and korra, and the world shifted and changed over and over. even in the 60 or so years between ATLA and LOK, the avatar universe completely transformed from what we saw in ATLA. and aang himself was shocked by how different the world looked after 100 years of being away at the time of his series.

i think 10,000 years is a complete avatar cycle. regardless of wether wan had fused with raava in the last dark/light struggle, raava and vaatu were going to battle again. the planets were going to align, harmonic convergence was going to happen again. it’s spirit world fate combined with natural world fate. the balance of the world goes far beyond any political struggle of the physical world, or any light/dark battle in the spiritual one. it’s not korra’s fault the cycle ended, the spirit world and physical world were just shifting again.

the past avatar advice was crucial for aang’s journey to to bring balance to the physical world. there were certainly spiritual avatars, but it’s assumed the majority of them dealt with political material world conflicts. and again, the world changes fast. you don’t even see aang talk to any of his past lives before kuruk. just 4 avatars ago, and that’s already ~400 years before aang was alive (though that’s kiyoshis fault for living so long) yes it’s upsetting for 10,000 years of connection and lived avatar wisdom to be severed, but that advice is no use to a new 10,000 year age that looks nothing like the previous.

it’s always been the avatar’s duty to keep balance between the physical and spirit worlds, korra’s choice to not close the spirit portals makes complete sense. it had been 10,000 years since it had been closed during the harmonic convergence that Wan saw. 10,000 years of avatars to, as it seems for the most part, assist the physical world and their governments to be able to coexist peacefully as a modern society. and aang finally achieved that by ending the 100 year war and uniting the nations. now it’s korra’s duty to start a new 10,000 year avatar cycle and begin the coexistence of the spirit and physical world. it would have happened if korra or eska or even oogi became the next avatar.

What happened to the trio's parents? I'm dying to know the lore!

This won't be the focus of this AU, but you can have a lil lore as an (angsty) treat 🥲

Each of their families lived in the human world, as many monsters do, either nomadically, elusively in the wilderness, or by masquerading. Lock was born to young, first time parents. Shock was born to a coven. Barrel was his parents’ fifth son, giving him four older brothers. 

They were all born during the height of monster hunting and were three lucky cases found by other monsters and taken to Halloween Town as orphans. Unbeknownst to them, the reason monster hunting took place during that time was because Oogie Boogie was rampantly devouring human children. 

Essentially...they were orphaned because their former boss had given humans in several towns desperate cause to hunt the supernatural.

@revretch​ and I are almost done this book, because we do both really love these characters and their spooky world to this day, but we’ve also now spent much of the book’s third act picking it apart and making fun of its terrible decisions, which include (SPOILERS)

All the other holiday worlds are just populated with humans?

The main antagonist ends up being the Sandman who puts almost everyone in existence to sleep except for Sally, so a LOT of the book is Sally wandering places where no one else is conscious.

Because of this, there is no character exploration or development for anyone but Sally, barely any time even spent with Jack.

This brings us to “Dreamtown,” an ancient world that pre-dates all holidays. Instead of some amazing fantasy land it’s just a city where everybody wears pajamas.

The only exception is that some people in Dreamtown are rag dolls, like Sally.

Oh no.

Yes, this author really went “never mind Sally’s abusive upbringing, she was just kidnapped and has a REAL loving family waiting for her!” I even had a great family myself and I hate this trope, it feels condescending to kids with shitty parents.

Sally, a character famous for being able to break apart and sew herself back together, not only never once uses this in the entire book but is terrified of injury.

In fact, Sally is terrified by a lot of things in this story. Ernshaw seemingly remembered that Sally was sweet, quiet and kind compared to the other Halloween monsters, but forgot that she fearlessly went after Oogie Boogie, that she was totally unimpressed by horror of any kind, and again that she is INVULNERABLE TO MOST FORMS OF HARM.

I know it’s a book for kids but it basically has less tension or character development than the movie it’s actually based on, a lot less. I can’t find much online about the author or her other work, but I get the sense she wasn’t really feeling it, and powering through it for that Disney paycheck. Also THE MOST OBNOXIOUS THING OF ALL: Sally’s core “dilemma” is that she’s not really enthused to be a queen.......until she visits the human world, briefly. Everyone there is asleep of course, but then she finds, I shit you not, QUEEN ELIZABETH II, and there are MULTIPLE PAGES devoted to how the sight of Queen Elizabeth inspires Sally to embrace a love of monarchy. The queen is described as having a “magnificence” even lying asleep in a chair, that just looking at her communicates the “soul” of a queen.

This book is Royal Family wank disguised as a Nightmare Before Christmas sequel.

Elaborating on my silly little idea where the Beifongs keep flying boars as pets.

Lin owns one, he lives in her house in Republic City, his name is Foo Foo Cuddlypoops Jr (named by uncle Sokka ofc) and he is her best friend.

And it's not just a cute little piggy. It's a huge 600 pound beast. It's very protective of his human. I like to imagine flying boars are like semi magical creatures that live super long. So Foo Foo was a piglet when Lin was a kid and they're best friends.

Foo Foo is Tenzin's NEMESIS. This boar hated Tenzin even before he broke up with Lin. Foo Foo would sit on Tenzin and chew on his robes. When Tenzin broke up with Lin, she unleashed her boar onto Air Temple Island. Also i just imagine Tenzin flying on Oogi and the Lin just pulling up on her winged boar, like:

The long, LONG delayed final image in my “OCs & Inspirations” series, at least for now. This was originally intended to be part of a bunch of pics commemorating Disney’s 100th Anniversary, but the artist was facing some difficulties, so it took much longer than expected. I don’t mind in the least, however, because this was more than worth the wait…and hey, Valentine’s Day may not be the most obvious holiday of choice to release this, but a holiday is still a holiday. And with these two, it felt right to post their pic on such an occasion. Oh, on that note, before I go on: the image was made by @hooter-n-company, who also did my image for Nakoda and Kaa for the series a while back. I can’t honestly decide which of them I like more, between this image and that one; they’re both absolutely breathtaking. Her work always is. Thank you, Hoots. <3 ANYWAY…Reno was the first character I specifically created as a sort of “correction” to an old pred crush of mine. Nako and Billy being more “appealing” versions of their source inspirations (for me) was just sort of a welcome bonus. But with Reno, I deliberately created him with the idea of taking a character I used to have an interest in “that way,” but no longer do, and then creating someone I could “kinkify” more easily via the power of Twisted Wonderland’s universe. When I was a kid, I used to have a bit of a crush on Oogie Boogie from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” I even had some rather…VIVID dreams, involving this big bag of bugs, which I shall always remember. However, over time, my interests and ideals with such things changed, and as they did, my love for Oogie dwindled. Reno was my way of trying to do something more “me” with the character.

The name “Reno” comes from Reno, Nevada. It was suggested by my friend, @belliesandburps. Since Reno is just a big a gambler as Oogie, it seemed fitting to use the name of a city known for gambling - and in the same state as arguably the gambler paradise of the world, Las Vegas - for his name. “Rovar” comes from a Hungarian word meaning “insect,” which of course fit perfectly. Combined, the two have a similar sort of “bounce” and syllabic structur to “Oogie Boogie,” and the alliteration was amusing to me. In terms of personality, Reno, in a way, is Oogie…but with a sort of soft side. Like, his source material, he is crass, crude, loud, rowdy, mischievous, a bit sadistic, and constantly thinks with his stomach. HOWEVER, for all his jagged edges, Reno isn’t someone who does bad things just for the sheer sake of it, unlike Oogie. Reno still has the capacity to care about people, and even some of the more “evil” things he’s done were usually out of a sort of bitter desire to get back at people he felt were more fortunate, while also helping himself and those he cared about in the process. He’s not the easiest person to get along with, but he’s not a literal monster.

I decided to sort of reverse things in terms of the way Oogie’s true self is revealed in the film, for Reno. In the movie, Oogie glows green in blacklight, but his actual appearance is a much duller beige hue. And of course, when you strip away the bag, he’s a collection of creepy crawlies underneath. So, with Reno, his human form has dull colors, with a sweater that resembles Oogie’s burlap, but his true form - a sort of “demi bug” - is colored in shades of vibrant green. His Overblot form, meanwhile - which Hoots helped IMMENSELY with working out - has a sort of neon appearance, inspired by the look of Oogie’s lair, and is a collection of different elements from different arthropods.

In this case, I think the different colors help the pair stand in good contrast to each other. ;)

Hello! And no, I hadn’t really thought of this before since the trio’s backstories are something I’ve been meaning to work in my HC for a long time. I think I can come up with a few!

Past Life(Former Human):

Lock was probably one of those kids who got in trouble at school and/or with his parents. Might’ve had to sit through some counseling that didn’t work.

He likes playing pranks and tricks on his fellow classmates(even teachers), coming up with creative ideas to do so. He rarely ever got away with them, though.

He considered himself independent so he had little friends. With the few he had, he insisted on being the leader and bossing them around(getting upset if they don’t listen to him).

^ His drive for independency comes from not really being heard from at home. His family doesn’t pay a lot of attention to him since he’s considered a ‘troubled’ child.

^^ This is why Oogie Boogie was a tempting figure when he met him - he was someone who promised to give Lock attention and reward him for doing what he does best - making trouble. Boogie knew his desire on being a true leader and that’s what he offered to him.

His favorite holiday was Halloween because it was the only socially-accepted time to play tricks on people, and get away with them since he was in costume.

Devil:

Grew up without any parents since they abandoned him when he was little. He had to grow up independent in order to take care of himself.

With the lack of a family, he doesn’t know a lot about his species and secretly feels ashamed about it.

^ The positive part about being alone meant he got to do what he wanted and get away with everything, hence why he loves making trouble and pulling pranks.

He couldn’t make many friends since devils were stereotyped to be untrustworthy. So he had a habit of lashing out at kids his age when they ignored/bullied him.

^ Deep down, he craved to have a family or friends who understood him since he was really lonely. He treasures his cohorts even though he wouldn’t show it/tell them.

Oogie Boogie is the closest thing he’s got to a father figure, who looks at him as more than a devil and never misjudged him(rather, admired what he was capable of).

Since a total of zero people asked me: here are my opinions on Palia non-romancable NPCs after playing the game for about 100 or so hours. And as always SPOILERs:

Ashura: You are my dad. You're my dad. Boogie-ooogie-oogie. I actually don't take to him as much as I should.The fact that he was the chill one in his family makes so much sense. He's such a calming presence. But of course there's the Regrets.

Delaila: Ok but why is she the few Older adult Majiri OG in Kilima? Like have you noticed that she's kinda the only one that's originally from the village? Like, where did she come from? Is she the real leader? Did she secretly take everyone out that she didn't like and replace them with people lured in my her homecooking? Things to think about.

Kenli: What happens when you don't give a nepotism baby a coming-of-age redemption arc. This guy is just trying his best. He likes sandwiches and cute fluffy animals. His best friend is the town priest. But despite it all man understands capitalism like no other (see Maji Market).

Caleri: She's a fav. Maybe I'm projecting but I too would die for my books and eat sleep and breathe in the library. Intelligent, unbothered by village happenings. Yet, keeps a detailed leger of each book bowers status upon the borrowed book's return. However, deeply unhappy with the cards life has delt her. I try to bring her all the glass bulbs so she can read into the night.

Elouisa: The only real G's out there. Sending me on impossible tasks to prove her theories and beat to cryptid allegations. Of course she's the older twin. Intelligent, bothered by village happenings when it comes to her projects. Still watches over her sister and cares in her own way. I love her.

Badruu: Comedic genius. I'm pretty sure when he gave up the bard life for farming, he realized he needed to put his funny guy hat on and has been spitting puns ever since. And yet despite the dad jokes, he asks me me, the amnesiad human for parenting advice. The absolute honor. Also, I just need to see him talk with Einar, PLEASE. The comedic fallout would be unmatched.

Najuma: I make the journey to Bahari Bay every day just for her. Because 1) thanks for the glider I use that every day 2) we are besties and 3) it's good to keep a genius that can blow stuff up on your side idk. We may have different types of Momma Trauma but we are still going to bond over it.

Chayne: I don't interact with him much idk. His dad's raised him right I think. Basically, caretaker for the entire village. Also my Shepp-in-law, grand-Shepp?? idk

Hekla: Jina's caretaker. A bit aloof at first. I also don't interact with Hekla much, but one day I'mma find out what's in the tent.

Sifuu: That's my Shepp! Also a problematic mother that doesn't really understand her child and yearns for days of adventure. And ripped. There's something to be said that she gave me an ornamental sword as a gift. Like insta-loyalty from me even if I wasn't romantically pursuing your son.

Auni: We babe who needed someone is his bug hunting club but mysteriously sucks at hunting most bugs if his item requests are anything to go by. The fact that he ran away from home for the exact length of time that his delivery shift is and wondered why no one was worried is absolutely hilarious and yes I read his journal and laughed.

Zeki: First of all, why is Zeki the only one selling toilets and they are contraband? Has anyone asked this? Is it like illegal to use indoor plumbing and Zeki has the monopoly?? Secondly, I know this fool is scamming me and when I finally get enough gold I'ma buy out him and his whole underground establishment. Respectfully, of course.

Eshe: If Eshe has zero haters, I'm dead. Just because she didn't get with the politically powerful sibling, she makes it everyone else's problem while somehow still efficiently running the village. Even I gotta admit no one's doing it like her. Another member of the problematic mom club but don't tell her she's been grouped with Sifuu. She'll pitch a fit.

Tau: The fact that there's only one of him is a crime. The only good boy.

He finds it so easy to trick people into doing whatever he wants and into whatever deals he wishes, however...when it came to you...this little human who came to him seeking a deal, for whatever reason you scratched that part of him that wanted to do both beautiful and horrific things to you.

Jaakobah isn't a very sexual person to anyone but to those he owns, he gets a rush of power and hypersexuality and its almost like he's a bear In heat as he pins down whatever and who ever he owns and fucks them until they either die or he's satisfied.

When he sat you down on his lap he made sure to have his arms on you at all times, he didn't want you running now not that you would or could. much like his carousel like head and his multiple faces that he frequently flicked through- his dick was no diffrent, he sported about four of them... dicks is the wrong word...he was not made for reproduction nor were his dicks, sure it brings pleasure and "cums" but he is completely infertile.
