No one, not even a fluffy bird, could say truthfully that today was a lovely day in the wild west Highlands of Scotland. Even at noon it was dark, because dense Scotch mist was blocking out most of the light; the wind was blowing, the rain was raining, and – especially if one was already wet as a result of these phenomena – it felt unpleasaantly cold, although in reality the temperature was nothing like as low as it was around the homes of many of Algy's friends in the northern hemisphere. But it's one thing to be cold and dry, especially in calm weather, and quite another to be cold and wet in a constantly buffeting wind…
However, as Algy perched damply in a hypericum bush, rocking resolutely to and fro in the wind and the rain, he suddenly noticed with glee that there were brand new bright green leaves coming out all around him, on stems which only a week or so ago had been almost completely bare. Despite the unpleasant conditions, he was truly delighted to see them, but as he grew damper and damper and colder and colder, he couldn't help reflecting that it was a pity that the weather in this part of the world so rarely permitted comfortable appreciation of the joys of the early spring, for:
In spring a bluster busting up against a wall will lift last year’s leaves higher than trees did.
[Algy is thinking of the short poem Resurrections by the 20th century American poet A. R. Ammons.]

Plant of the Day
Thursday 14 September 2023
Today I noticed these decorative berries in a border probably on Hypericum ‘Hidcote’ (St John's wort), certainly a sign of autumn. This shrub can be pruned to a woody base so it behaves like an herbaceous perennial.

The man on the radio is lively and leading us through Monday morning at quite a lick. Weatherwise this channel is water wings and a boat until further notice. The traffic lady would have told us all about the cars, buses and lorries but technical difficulties mean we'll all just have to draw our own conclusions ... or just look out of the window.
Today's groaner: Mr Gates and Mr Schwarzenegger meet at a celebrity gathering and Mr Gates can't help but be curious to see if Mr Schwarzenegger has upgraded to the latest version of Windows. He approaches Arnie and asks "Have you tried the new Windows yet?" ... to which Arnie replies "No, not yet, I still love the old Vista baby!" ;-D badoom tish ... here all week!!
Gotta go go go this morning as Little Dude needs to get back to the vet for his first check up since his leg operation. He's being a suitably mimbly and pissed off pup. Can't blame him. Even at 13 he's got quite some pep in his step and isn't taking kindly to being confined.
Monday, Monday, Monday and the coffee is copious ...

Hypericum sp. L. Familia: Hypericaceae
Nombre común: Hipérico, sanalotodo, hierbas de San Juan
Del griego hyperikon "por encima de la aparición", planta mágica que se le atribuyó el poder de espantar demonios. This is an arrangement I made for $50 in about 20 minutes. The customer’s directions were to make it orange and they liked it a lot! I used two different colors of spray roses, tinted solidago/goldenrod, alstroemeria in the shade “Party”, dark red hypericum, orange santini poms, and white statice

Il Sole brilla
nella volta celeste,
irradiando il suo calore
mentre i suoi raggi
scendono potenti
sulla terra.
Altri piccoli soli
sbocciano tra i campi
portando la luce,
all’alba dell’estate
