That does indeed rule!
But on a further thought, I think it might also be both. Real space to hyperspace mapping data is a big deal because although space is mostly empty, navigational errors (like attempting to fly through solid objects) apparently have really spectacular results and 0 survival rate.
But all of those hyper lanes also lead to somewhere and transport something for trade, which can be taxed! And vessels probably need to make pit stops for fuel, food or mechanical problems, or to stop to unload/reload cargo to transport it to different lanes and locations. So controlling main trade hubs and strategic points along hyper lanes would also be a thing.
…probably leading to black market routes and trading hubs, i.e. why smuggling may be harder to control in GFFA versus Earth. Although I also get the idea that mapping new hyper lanes is a big deal that takes a lot of resources, so it might be prohibitively expensive for all but the largest of non-governmental organisations.
In the pre-Disney SW canon (beginning in the WEG D6 RPG), hyperspace travel time was based not on distance, but on how well-charted a particular route was wrt the positions/movements of planets, asteroids, and other navigational hazards. So, ownership of hyperspace "lanes" wasn't about owning the actual *space*, but rather the detailed chart data, kind of like licensing copyrighted map data for real-life navigation systems.
Oh that fucking rules actually

Another "space is fucking scary" post but even with how prevalent space travel is in Star Wars, I think the vast majority of people would never actually leave their planet's atmosphere.
At least according to a quick search there are currently 47 active astronauts at NASA, compared to the US population of 340 million that's some 0.000014% or more roughly only about one person in 10 million will be an astronaut. Coruscant has a population in the trillions, using the same percentage that would put the number of active spacefarers just short under a milion. Let's say passengers and non-pilot personnel could be comparable to most commercial airlines where the ratio is two pilots to about 200 passengers, so 1%. So we're on some 101 000 000 frequent flyers. And that's just one planet of a galaxy-spanning republic (or empire depending on the time period), even if the most populous one. If the ratios were comparable on other planets, I think this would easily satisfy even the demands of a military we see in the movies. But in the end it's still only 0.01% of a planet's population.
But in the end why would most people want to leave their planet? The space is scary and so many things could go wrong. Look how many people irl are terrified of flying even though it's arguably the safest mode of transportation. But you can still survive a plane disaster, even if your chances are low. In space, the chances are zero
#star wars#don't think about the math too much#I'm a humanities major I can't do math#but yeah I think space in star wars isn't for anyone#even aside the fact that space is so terrifying it would discourage many people. you have the safety checks. the costs#don't tell me there isn't some insane taxation on the hyperlanes because maintaining those has to be expensive as shit

Art dump part ?: more dnd
This guy was in two campaigns back to back, Lancer and Hyperlanes. He was human in the first one and an astral elf in the second, only the elf version got a portrait oops. His name is Ravi, and his story arc is best summarized as mechanic falls in love and tries to run away with a sentient AI. Romantic tragedy ensues. His callsign was Orpheus for a reason.
Art from early 2023
#my art#dnd#lancer rpg#ravi (orpheus) kalra#his mech names in the lancer game were top tier depressing#his NHP husband presumed KIA was called Dullahan#guess what i named the Genghis Mk I mech when our party found it lol#completely circumvented the scary AI final boss for our hyperlanes game by being friendly and rolling high in persuasion

Me: "Yeah, I enjoyed those episodes, but I'm still not feeling the Star Wars anymore. It's really just not for me..."
Star Wars: "Okay, but what if we make a show where a bunch of kids accidentally get launched into space and none of them actually knows how to fly the ship, so they're lost lightyears away from home?"

H Y P E R L A N E
Music: Skeler - ID
After checking in with Mara, and restocking on supplies from his safe house tucked away in Santo, Jack gets into his modified Mitzutani Shion and makes for the nearest Hyperlane entrance.
Setting the Hyperlane auto-driver to the Northern Industrial District Sector 12 exit.
The steering wheel retracts, his seat moves and leans backwards to a 45 degree angle as the vehicle engages it's mag-lev guided system and launches forward, pulling 2gs, pressing him into the syn-leather seats. The skin on his face distorts ever so slightly, but only takes a few seconds to adjust to this new accelerated norm. 300 mph, driven by a supercharged BMW E30 engine, a swap out from it's stock 5-cyclinder; a twin turbo aspiration for better usage in his races as opposed to a single which would be better off the line. Lastly, the piece that makes this all possible on the Hyperlane, a mag-lev system installed on the bottom of the car that acts like a rail-gun accelerator. Using an advanced Electro-magnet, it works in tandem with the Hyperlane's electro magnets built into the road. I would direct you to this link for in-depth information on how Mag-lev propulsion works if you're not familiar.
It'll be 20 minutes before he reaches the NID at this speed. With the Hyperlanes having a diameter of roughly 100 miles give or take a dozen here and there.
During this time, Jack call's Gordie "Optic" Dockett. A Media out of Watson's mega-building 10. He'd done work with him before, specifically the Dynalar gig with Mara, and the guy seemed capable. Though he didn't like the idea of splitting the pot.
The holo rings…."Jack, Mara tells me you might need a hand?"
"Yea I've got this guy in NID that owes a bookie in Watson money."
"Bookie in Watson? Who?"
"No idea, wasn't in the deets. Anyhow, I'm not sure what I'm walkin into so if you don't mind being an extra body.."
Gordie cuts him off, "I got you Jack, no worries. Just slide a piece of that 10 thou when you're done."
Jack curses to himself. Why the fuck did Mara tell him how much it was?
"Sure, let's call it a flat 2 and see where it goes from there."
Jack rolls a 17 for Persuasion vs. Gordie Dockett's 23
"Woah woah. 20%? Maybe it's cause we haven't worked together enough but I ain't some hired muscle. You call me, shits getting done. I want 40 flat, and 50 if there's issues."
Jack grits his teeth. He rolls a crit success 20 for Cool. He avoids being argumentative.
"Gouging me man. Alright whatever, fine 40 it is. I'll see you there."
Jack sends him some meet-up cords in NID and closes the call.
Jack messages Mara
Way to hand out too much info. The guy is takin half the pot …just let me explain the deets on the gig next time please.
Well fed hands, Jack. He did a lot of work pro-bono for me on my next gig.
For you. This is my gig with a different fixer. Just saying respect the boundaries.
Mara sends a confirmation but doesn't reply.

drafting in dialogue-only at the moment because i'm trying to connect scenes that don't want to be connected. one wants to be at the end of the chapter but i'm trying to explain that there really isn't anything between the first scene and it but it is NOT COOPERATING.
“Where is it?” “Not in a place you should be.” “I'm not going to go there!” “Really. You're not planning on heading down to the lowest level of the Temple I have access to and playing Freia Kallea until you've figured out where its entrance is?” “What’s Freia Kallea?” “A finding game. You put on a blindfold and call out ‘Freia’ while the other person responds with ‘Kallea’ and tries to trick you into not finding them by hiding in the Force or suppressing their own connection so you can't find them that way, and redirecting the air currents to throw their voice.” “So, in this metaphor, the Sith Shrine is the one saying ‘Kallea’?” “You're not going to go looking for it?” “Not physically. How many archaeological digs have been done on this mountain?” “Four hundred and thirty-eight since the reformation of the Republic.”
#keeping up with the skywalkers#galaxies far far away may be closer than they appear#gffa marco polo gets to be named after freia kallea since the entire hyperlane is named after banu hydia#ari: *cupping hands around mouth* I NEED TO BE ABLE TO MEASURE THE DECAY OF DARK SIDE VIBES LIKE CARBON-14#imagining akk dogs going over auction houses like sniffer dogs except they're sith-sensing not drug-sensing#also i need a jedi version of inoue enryō w/ the 'removing superstition from the REAL FACTS religion'#not farfalla. maybe someone from the ambria strike team

Nubank Acquires Hyperplane To Supercharge AI-powered Banking
A sign of the increasing significance of artificial intelligence (AI) in the banking industry is the acquisition of San Francisco-based startup Hyperplane by Brazilian digital banking behemoth Nubank. The deal, which was revealed on June 26, 2024, combines Hyperplane’s foundation model development experience with Nubank’s vast client base and data repository.
Hyperplane: Building a Personalized Banking Experience
Hyperplane, which was founded in 2022 by a group with extensive experience in data science, came out of stealth mode last year with the audacious objective of enabling banks all over the world by constructing a data intelligence layer. With the help of this layer, banks would effectively be able to harness the power of their own client data and provide individualized banking services.
In other words, if banks all over the world have a ton of first-party data, what does it take to construct a data intelligence layer so that banks can plug in their data and use it effectively? This is the issue that Hyperplane is trying to answer, as co-founder Rohan Ramanath put it.
With the help of Hyperplane’s technology, banks can now train their own AI models to support a range of functions, including marketing campaigns, loan collections, and risk assessment. This method gave banks a great deal of flexibility and control over their AI-powered products.
Joining Forces with Nubank: A Match Made in AI
Hyperplane’s innovative approach has now landed them squarely within the walls of Nubank, the world’s largest digital banking platform outside of Asia. With over $2.7 billion in revenue reported last quarter and a customer base exceeding 100 million across Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia, Nubank boasts a significant advantage: a massive amount of banking data.
This data is the lifeblood of AI-powered financial services. By acquiring Hyperplane, Nubank gains access to cutting-edge technology that will allow them to transform this data into personalized financial experiences for their customers.
“Nubank’s mission since its founding is to fight complexity and empower fanatical customers,” said Nubank CEO and founder David Velez. “Our early investments in AI, coupled with the impressive infrastructure and talent that Hyperplane team has been able to put together, will accelerate our mission.”
Velez’s statement underscores Nubank’s commitment to using AI to revolutionize banking. The acquisition of Hyperplane follows a series of tech-focused acquisitions by Nubank in recent years. These include Clojure consultancy Cognitect (2020), digital broker Easynvest (2020), and AI-powered financial management startup Olivia (2021).

So a ship in hyperspace is basically untraceable, but there is technology to simulate the gravity shadow of a planet to kick a ship out of hyperspace
What I'm saying is, what if they have road checks along major hyperlanes
#since smuggling is kind of a big problem in the star wars galaxy#imo it makes sense they would turn on gravity well projectors at random spots along major hyperlanes#and just kick a ship out of hyperspace to check the cargo n stuff#star wars#star wars lore

Watching Attack of the Clones and the refugee transport is just...flying through space at one point.
No hyperspace.
No jumping into hyperspace and then back out precisely at the destination, ten minutes later.
Nope.
It's actually TRAVELING.
With travel time.
Because that's A THING.
#I can complain about whatever nitpicks I want to#anyone can complain about whatever they want#no matter how lame or overly serious#nothing will ever rankle me more than TRAVEL TIMES being eliminated#the OG film had a TIME DEMAND FOR ORBITING A PLANET#let alone hyperspace travel time#star wars writers quit being lazy with travel times challenge two thousand and nope it's too late#you blew it#it's over I'm done#MAKE IT TAKE A WEEK TO CROSS THE GALAXY#WEEKS EVEN#with cooldown times for your hyperdrive#and waypoints#and no don't give me ''hyperspace lanes'' poodoo#just...'''X distance requires Y travel time at Z speed''#hyperlanes are fine for routes but don't go#''oh you can take this route to go a bajillion times faster'' just to explain things#i mean it's kinda cool#but#also#NO
