Last Line Challenge
Rules: in a new post, show the last line you wrote (or drew) and tag as many people as there are words (or as many as you feel like).
Thanks for bullying me into occasionally drawing something for myself as well @insertmeaningfulusername ❤️ (even if just so that I can answer your tags XD)
The old man has way too many lines now. More news at definitely-not-8.

I’m GENUINELY curious. I’ve kinda picked up that a lot of us have at least 1 part of the drawing process that we just fuckin,, hate. I know a lot of us have strong opinions on lineart. Mine is doing the flat colours, that shit is so boring. Rant about what you hate and why in the tags. This is a safe space to be a whiny bitch

(updated) commission info
all money from commissions will go towards my homeless mutuals, not me. i don’t need the money, but she and her partner do. all payment will be made in USD and will have to be sent with confirmation from my mutuals before i begin working on the art. all the details will be below the cut. dm if interested!
what i AM willing to do:
animals (mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, simple insects)
most mythical and extinct animals
humans
anthro/furry
body horror
violence/gore
fanart
original characters
sfw ship art
standalone scenes/backgrounds
(if anything you’d like isn’t on this list, dm me and ask and i’ll let you know if i’m willing to do it!)
what i am NOT willing to do:
anything nsfw
anything hateful/promoting hate speech
pedophilic, incestuous, or non-consensual relationships
heavy mecha
heavy perspective
hyperrealism
i reserve the right to deny any commission for any reason - just don’t be weird and we’ll be fine
please provide references/a detailed description if you want anything specific! personality descriptions are very much appreciated if you’re getting a specific character so i can properly draw the pose/expression.
focal item/character
simple sketch — $7-12, additional $8 per extra character
Tumblr media
if you’d like simple and quick shading like on the first example here, let me know! also feel free to choose background and line colour (default is purple lines & grey or white background)
coloured sketch — $15-20, additional $10 per extra character
Tumblr media
the second image here would be somewhere around $35 for the shading, but i didn’t have many examples for this style lol
plain lineart — $16-30, additional $14 per extra character
Tumblr media
please specify the complexity you’d like by referencing the examples given here! again, feel free to choose line and background colour
reference sheet — $30-45
Tumblr media
please provide a detailed description of the character for this! picture references are best but i can 100% go off of descriptions as well, and please provide a description of their personality, character traits, etc
simple flat colour
headshot: $15-22
halfbody: $20-25
fullbody: $26-35
Tumblr media
for some reason i don’t have an example for headshot for this one but it’s essentially shoulders-up
complex flat colour
headshot: $30-36
halfbody: $35-42
fullbody: $40-50
Tumblr media
please note that the second example here has a complex background that would cost more, but just the main character itself would be around $40
shading
shading prices will be added on top of any of the above
simple shading — $15-45
Tumblr media
the fire in the second example here does count as simple shading and a very simple background so it wouldn’t be any extra money for a fire background like this one
complex shading — $50-90
Tumblr media
all of these prices are set with a presumed transparent, solid colour, or simple background. these are all free of charge.
backgrounds
all background prices are added onto existing focal item prices. standalone scenes and backgrounds without a focal item are the same prices as listed here.
simple backgrounds/flourishes — $10-20
Tumblr media
sorry for the reused pictures i don’t have a whole ton of examples
complex backgrounds — $25-75
Tumblr media
if you have any questions or would like to know what i’d charge for any of these examples here, send me a dm and i’ll answer as fast as i can! lots of detail in the descriptions of what you’d like is very appreciated, and feel free to correct me on anything you want different! dm me if interested!

AAAA THANK YOU. i love how sharp lineart looks, but i hate doing it 95% of the time. I LOVE SKETCHING THO.. so by just going right for flat colours and carving the shapes out, i'm having fun through the entire experience which is.. The Goal. it's like sketching and colouring sametime. so good.. i recommend it to anyone whose in a bit of an art funk!

how clean are you colors before you merge them into the lines for painting? because i cant seem to find a balance between "my god i need to do this whole thing from scratch (too sloppy)" and "well whats the point of painting here (nothing left to paint if i merged the lineart)". sorry if this doesnt make any sense idk how to word myself better sometimes
I think I get you! Honestly I have a kind of threshold I reach where I know that I’ve done all that I can on separate layers and if I were to keep them separate, I’d just be creating more hassle for myself/forced to select layers and keep everything properly organised and it becomes a drag when I’d just rather be painting. And this is usually because I want to take advantage of the mixing effect of Sai’s paintbrush tool to start blending stuff. Also all my colours are on one layer anyway from the beginning (if I need especially ‘clean’ colours I might have a layer for them but I always merge them to the main colour layer before continuing). (also sorry I am away from my pc for a bit so I can’t show you actual Sai screenshots.. you will have to imagine). I ended up writing out the whole process in a way which is probably unhelpful
So for a painting like that one in the last post, I do my lines. Then I close the lines with a separate layer in the same folder (because the lineart looks better with gaps, but i fill colour by selecting outside the lineart while the folder is active, inverting selection, and paint bucket tool. Then delete the layer that closes the lineart). Base colour is usually the most common one in the palette. When I plan to merge the lines I usually make them solid/normal layer mode and colour the lines exactly to match the colours beneath, which is tedious but helps avoid the kind of translucent look lines on multiply layer give. But for that one the lines are on multiply. I lock the colour layer and paint in the other colours - different markings, materials, etc. It can be pretty rough because I know I can just paint over a wonky looking edge, but not so rough that I will have to go over it excessively later. Then with the lines and colours still on 2 separate layers, I put them both in a folder and clip a multiply layer onto that for cast shadows. Paint in cast shadows (again, it’s pretty rough, I know I will be merging & touching up everything at the end so it doesn’t have to be perfect. I hate multiply as a way to shade but I wanted shadows fast, again like I said it was a sketch I over-rendered I didn’t plan to polish it up so much. Normally I choose shadow colours and paint them like normal in the colour layer).
Then I merged the folder and the multiply layer into one layer (i usually make a copy of the lineart to keep it intact, just in case, and keep it hidden in the psd file). I make a new layer and paint in details that need to be sharp - usually around the eyes and face, where there is a focal point. This is because the default paintbrush in Sai has a slight mixing effect, and if I went in on the same layer it would not be as sharp. I use this new layer to paint in areas that need this sharp contrast and clean, tapered lines - like the stray hair and fluffy bits. Then merge all. Now I paint over the main layer all the things that don’t need that sharp treatment, this time taking advantage of the slight mixing effect of Sai’s paintbrush - I like this effect a lot and it’s what I use to blend the lineart into the colours, you can kind of ‘pull’ the lines out a little into the surrounding colour to make them less stark. Then I clip a new multiply layer to it, all one shade, to dim the entire painting so that the stark white highlights stand out more, clip a new layer on that, do the white highlights, merge all and bam it’s done

My birthday is tomorrow (the first of the first girl✨️) so im gonna dump this 2023 SPLATOON art before 2024
Most of them are sketches and WIPs though
Im gonna go through each one too:
Tumblr media
So we got some Terry spread on a page
Tumblr media
Drawing of @slauterhause 's Ebony!
Tumblr media
And this peak tutorial i made in 5 minutes oof
Tumblr media
And this Orion art which i lowkey have a problem with now i just hate it a little bit and the WIP looked better
Tumblr media
But I do like the styles i experimented with here! I want to redo the punk one it needs to give
Tumblr media
This was just a lighting experiment, less concerned with shape and more concerned with rendering and colouring over greyscale
Tumblr media
Lineart for a an isometric WIP i started a while ago
Tumblr media
Drawing of @debbyghost13 's Zero being helped by a particularly charitable and rich fellow
Tumblr media
I was sleepy on christmas and drew this, hoping the height comparison makes sense to me
Tumblr media
Oh and Hubert!
See you next year, everyone!

So I was sketching this as something to use my copics and my mom's ohuhu's on to see if I could colour them better now that I had more colours. And then I liked the sketch a lot and didn't want to ruin it with lineart so I started just lining it with pencil. Then I decided no, I would line it and colour it because I won't get better if I don't try. Then I hated it so I asked for advice on how to colour pencil sketches without it smearing and was told to colour first, then line. So I covered the lineart I had done and redrew it by shining my phone's flashlight through the paper and tracing what was underneath. Then I lightly erased everything and started colouring and I actually had so much fucking fun doing it that way. I got done with Moon and I just couldn't stop smiling. And then I coulered Sun and I had fun with her too.

(Prev. post: on force study)
Once I've measured and sketched it in full like I want it on a separate paper, i used the ye olde pencil transfer trick, which.. haven't used That one since before digital. WOW
Just to make sure the composition was where i wanted it, to avoid erasing and ruining my watercolour paper (bc erasing is a crime punishable by art law (joking) gjyky)
It doesn't need to be the Exact lines, it just needs to be clear enough to draw over
Tumblr media Tumblr media
BUT THEN comes the dreaded question, right, like: " how do i make lineart not Stiff after working and reworking it sm times? " bc at this stage it Rly was looking more Blocky than flowy.
Answer i found:
I rly comes back to that early energy study for me, like: whichever direction the energy is going, that's where the 2d lines need to be going. It's rly that simple, but easy to forget
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had a Lot of fun w the fact that even the strands of caleb's beard and essek's ears follow this line of action XDD
Tumblr media
The more you know i guess
I think i did most of that subconsiously after i noticed that it Worked, but i'll def keep it in mind going forward
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then i did colour. I dread it. I hate it. Paint is unpredictable and i have control issues.
But it worked out so all is well
Aaaand ,, That's it !! Have a nice weekend (i'm playing dnd)
(Does Explaining the magic Ruin the magic or does it encurrage others to make their Own Magic?? Who can say... (magic is art in this analogy btw)).

SW Hades AU Status Update
I wanted to make a dedicated post about what I’m currently working on for the Star Wars meets Hades AU that looks more consistent than just sharing bits and pieces whenever I’m tagged in a Last Line Challenge. Because what else do I have but the poly sketch requests and this AU for my weekends? (If nothing else I know that the Hades AU has got me XD)
For now Obi-Wan and Maul are stuck at the same stage: they are both lined, have their base colours down as well as the two adjustment layers of coloured lighting.
Tumblr media
I suspect if I were ever to get through the agonozing few hours of shading Obi-wan’s face it would be mostly smooth sailing from there. The problem is that there are at least 2 - if not 3 - separate stages where the shaded face looks like I have no idea what I’m doing, and you need to get through the whole thing before it really comes together 😅 on the other hand Hades 2 has a lot of the directional shading I might need for his character art so that might help to get me there.
It also needs to be said that Obi-Wan comes with the extra disadvantage that is the entire background behind him. I’m really hyped to line it finally, it is quite a challenge, but at the same time I’m slowly coming to the realization that I have no idea how I will colour it. Hades backgrounds are so so pretty and full of details and gorgeous colours, and while I’m not delusional enough to think I could match that on first try… I still wish I could, you know? At the same time I will have to erase or recolour a lot of my lines, which will hurt quite a bit, I imagine. I’m so bad at killing my darlings 😅 also I hate laying down flat colours. I just find it very difficult to immerse myself in that process, while lining and shading can have their flow.
Tumblr media
I had covered up so many lines and details in Maul’s spider parts it’s a miracle I didn’t cry XD However, tips on grouping my shadows and allowing the shape to speak for itself and the details in them are very helpful and on point.
Worrying over writing dialogue for them is also not as far down my to-do list as I wish it were. I have a good enough idea for a quip for Obi-wan, but Maul? He’d need a whole melodramatic rant of his own XD
Aphra has gotten some new lines and I had fixed the satchel I had forgotten the last time I shared the rough sketch for her, thanks to the new character art for Hades 2! Seeing Odysseus and Hermès’s updated looks were great helps here, so I might as well move on to lining her, and finally adding another female character to the roster on top of Ahsoka!
Tumblr media
And then there is the biggest update on these little guys below! I will need to clean up the ones I had drawn for Cobb and Boba (and Din) well over a year ago, but with these my version of chtonic companions are done, and thanks to @lesquatrechevrons I have a full list of keepsakes for each character as well. I’m not very good at drawing these little tchotchkes (I say with Rex’s blaster right there LOL) but I hadn’t been very good at lineart or cell shading when I started this project either, so through forced practice I’m determined to change that :D
(It’s not a screwdriver under Boga, it’s one of Cody’s antennas. “It will grow back, don’t worry,” he says as he snaps it off his pauldron and hands it over to Din. Rex backs him up on that one without question. They can't lie for shit but trolling the shiny is their thing.)
Tumblr media
Additional fun fact: the reason why I’d picked up the chtonic companions concepts was because I’d been poking at minor details in the background behind Maul (aside from the Chaos doors), and I started adding credits and recoloured nectar to the corner (before I realized that they wouldn’t be visible once the character interaction comes up oops), and I tried to figure out to whose keepsakes Maul would react favorably. I also mixed up companion dolls and keepsakes, so that’s why the Ahsoka doll came to being (I also forgot that that one belongs to Rex, and not Ahsoka herself but uh… they are close enough that they should count by proxy anyway. It’s not Obi-wan’s cup of tea and that should be enough!). Also bless @mapleowl18 for suggesting Lil Soka as companion for Rex ❤️
So this is the current state of this AU project right now. I have my lists and notes, a few scribbled pose ideas in my sketchbook for Sabine (she might be next, unless Bo and her Nite Owls make a comeback), Satine and Omega (with Batcher), as well as some angry scribbles and question marks for Quinlan (who has apparently made his way back into this AU even though he didn’t get a little icon of his own originally orz), and Obi-wan The Second that would stand with Cody post reunion, but I cannot make that one work for now 😅

Since you like drawing anatomy is there a part you like drawing most or least?
How did you get a hang of drawing certain things like hands, feet, faces etc?
What phase of the art process in your favorite? (Sketching, lining, rendering etc)
How many layers do you usually have on a piece?
Do you find people, objects or animals easy or harder than one another? (Rephrased, which is easier, which is harder?)
Do you often add backgrounds to pieces if so how simple or how complex to they normally get?
Do you prefer simplistic drawings or do you like adding details/making detailed pieces?
How'd you find your style?
-sparrow
Since you like drawing anatomy is there a part you like drawing most or least?
I love drawing hands. It's such a weird thing to like but they're just so posable and they really hold a lot of information. It's also just so satisfying to add each finger lmfaooo. One thing I don't like drawing is the torso. Like oh my goddddd, I get way too confused trying to figure out how to move it around. ALSO FACES. I hate faces with a burning passion.
How did you get a hang of drawing certain things like hands, feet, faces etc?
I used to absolutely hate drawing hands. I'd hide them every and any way I could lmao. But I started using LineOfAction and did the hands practice photos and eventually started to get the hang of it. The more I drew them and stopped hiding, the better I got. It also helps to really break the hands down so you're thinking smaller instead of bigger. Each section of the palm is a shape vs the entire hand as one shape. It makes it easier to tackle.
As for feet, I never understood it until I watched this one video by DrizzleDrawing. It basically breaks the foot down into three shapes. The heel. arch. and toes. You can layer/foreshorten these shapes and it makes the foot look a lot more dimensional and accurate. I don't really know how to explain this in writing haha.
And for faces... I have no mastered faces at all. I'm still hiding from them. But if I've learned anything from my past experinces, I need to just face my fears (pun intended) and start drawing them more instead of hiding.
What phase of the art process in your favorite? (Sketching, lining, rendering etc)
SKETCHING!! I love sketching so much oh my goddddd. I have millions of sketches. I swear they always look so much better than my finished pieces. As soon as I do lineart or add colours my art just goes downhill lmfao.
How many layers do you usually have on a piece?
I like to combine layers as I move along. Normally I'll have my sketch layer. A line art layer. A layer for each base colour. Then a clipping mask layer on each of those base colour layers for shading. After that I kinda just add layers whenever I need them and start merging them when I can.
Do you find people, objects or animals easy or harder than one another? (Rephrased, which is easier, which is harder?)
Objects are the hardest because I'm horrible at understanding dimension and perspective. I've never been formally taught the theories of it so I just make shit up and hope it looks okay. Animals are some of my favourite things to draw though I don't do it often. I love cats in particular. They're probably the easiest for me to draw.
In fact, I used to only draw animals and never draw humans. I just started branching into humans a few years ago so I'm still getting the hang of it. I'd say they're relatively easy to draw until I get to the face. Then I'm screwed haha.
Do you often add backgrounds to pieces if so how simple or how complex to they normally get?
Because I don't really get perspective much, I try to avoid complex backgrounds. However, if I'm up for a challenge, I love making detailed pieces with backgrounds or settings. It's super fun to decorate and create a space. I need to work on my perspective and object drawing so I can do better at it.
Do you prefer simplistic drawings or do you like adding details/making detailed pieces?
I like a good mix of both honestly. I think too much detail can clutter and too simplistic can be 'boring'. So when I make a piece that's simple with just flat colours, I try to compensate by adding lots and lots of content and flow for the viewers eyes to move around. But if I make a really complex rendered piece I try to simplify the subject so there's not too much going on. If I have a very very simple subject, like painting a single flower, I try to compensate by adding something unique or creative. Like a slash of black paint and a value change or something like that. I think it's really just a balancing act and I like to stay towards the middle.
How'd you find your style?
Honestly still don't feel like I have a style. It changes so much. But the more I drew the more it developed.
I think the other biggest thing was taking in as much information as I could. I would watch my brother draw ever since I was a little kid. I observed the techniques he used and I took what I liked and kept it, and I modify what I didn't like, and discarded what I hated. I watch a lot of artists on YouTube too just to see how they do different things and pick up random miscellaneous tips that all combined to develop my style. I think it's also really important to immerse yourself in art. I follow literally like 400 artists on Instagram and I'm constantly being bombarded with the curated art I love and it helps inspire me. Just examining and appreciating the art allows me to find things I like and try to replicate it.
Finding your art style is just as much finding what you like as it is finding what you don't like. You gotta observe first. Then develop by drawing.
Thanks so much for the questions!!! 💜 I hope all of this made sense lmfao if you have any more questions or what help I'd be super happy to help. :)))

do you have any advice on making comics.? i’m getting stuck and constantly losing motivation. sorry for nagging you,
nah, you're good
my advice is work on what feels good. if you feel like scripting or sketching, then just keep doing that. if you wanna work on lineart and/or colour, then work on that
forcing yourself to do it a certain way that it doesnt want to flow is not going to work. thats how i kept losing motivation for some of my stuff, i was trying to force myself into a creation schedule that didnt work for me
also expect it to take time. comics take so much time and thats okay, but if you rush it, then you're just gonna make yourself hate it
also dont go for a full, polished look! it takes so much time and energy! literally the only reason i was able to do that for TSOB was because I worked 4 days a week, overnights, and spent the rest of my waking hours drawing. it was exhausting, rewarding but exhausting. and it wasnt sustainable
and also have other things to work on, so when you dont feel like working on your comic, you can still draw without forcing yourself into burnout by working on something you dont have motivation for
also, and this may seem obvious, but make sure you actually like the story you're trying to tell. the easiest way to burn out, i've found, it forcing yourself to work on something you dont like

How are your 2024 art goals going? Or is it too early to ask?
It's not too early! Though it may be too late... because I can't remember WHAT my goals were...
I remember answering an ask not long ago about my art plans for 2024 but all I remember from my answer was 'more animatics'. I did search for the ask but I can't find it, so I'm sorry I can't offer the BEST answer...
But the short answer is... YES. With no clue what my goals were, I'm very happy with how my art is going this year!
Like... we're not even a month and a half in and already my top four drawings of the year are really beautiful:
Tumblr media
(organized from least to most fave)
And I have some promising sketches too (if I ever complete them):
Tumblr media
Like my art just feels GOOD this year.
I feel like for the first time in a long time, I know how to draw. Do I know how to make my art eye-catching? How to do good composition? Colour? Not as well as I'd like... but I CAN DRAW. And that feels like the base I need to move forward!
When I do the lineart and it looks good, I no longer wonder how I did that cause I've done it enough times, I can just accept, I know how to draw! (Does this whole ramble make any sense???)
Point is, I am happy with the quality of my art so far this year.
I still have a way to go, I'm still touching up on anatomy, still figuring out how to get colour right without toooo much back and forth. Backgrounds.... I hate backgrounds.
But I am getting better and that's amazing.
Plus, I'm finally, slowly, posting art on Instagram rather than tumblr. Way behind, still uploading old pieces, but I think that's going to be a huge step in the right direction for my art because I get to have this page that is just art, which means, when I upload something and it gets zero likes, it doesn't feel like it's now lost forever, it isn't a failure? Rather it's on my page, it's in this sorta public portfolio of my work. It just feels right in a way tumblr never did.
I hope that answers the question... if you want to know specific things like... Have I done any animatics? (I have not) then please ask because I can't find the original post of my goals XD
I'm so sorry for my lack of organisation, but yeah. I'm very happy with my art right now. And thank you so much for the interest!
