sun in 3rd house - talk about thinking out-loud!! sun in 3rd people are such great communicators, they get things across loud and clear. never ones to hold back, natural conversationalists, and you have a voice that often sounds younger. when you talk it's heartfelt and you feel that half-assings in conversations is just not you! sometimes, your age is mistaken due to your lengths of knowledge and the ability to express your inner child through your interests. you use your hands often when you speak! often have such a memorable voice and this placement is a strong indicator of being a music artist too; justin beiber, jay z, drake, britney spears, all very household names and all are always getting their voice impersonated by other people interestingly enough!! there's versatility that spews through these people, not hard at all for them to improvise, standup, debate, etc. can be gossipy though and involved in dramas very easily because of this.

moon in 3rd house - mental clarity goes crazy here. your emotions give you all the drive you need- creatively and you don't hold back on that. they intellectualize their emotions and can formulate feelings into words very well. the kind of voice they have is much softer, eloquent, and comforting. they're the kind of people that send you a voicemail and you listen to it over and over again because it's endearing. venus in 3rd house - first thing that comes to mind is glamorous voice. often times they talk about their love-lives (yes they always have the craziest stories about others or themselves in love). just like the sun, these people have a notable voice too. one that can even get them famous. often these people have strong followings, or crowds that really like listening to them. highly influential and lowkey some party heads. might have some commitment troubles, but other than that they have good projecting voices- soothing, and has good posture too. celebs with this; cristiano ronaldo, taylor swift, kris jenner, etc.

mars in 3rd house - i like to say they have some of the most electric voices ever. seriously. they know exactly how to spice up conversations and they move a lot when they talk. they inspire others to take course of action, usually very good individuals at gaining crowds as well, but what differentiates venusian people and mars people- is the attitude. mars gain people's attention through their eccentric-ness. other people find mars in 3rd house bundles of expression, always on the go and actually very good manifestos. usually has raspiness and deepness to their voices because they tend to shout a lot. celebs with this; miley cyrus, harry styles, katy perry, etc.

jupiter in 3rd house - these people have a love for languages. usually very diverse linguistically, and always the guy that knows a guy. very good at developing acquaintances in their environment. usually has more high-pitched voices, slow and even sensual, but clear. they like knowing a bit of everything while they can. sometimes, these people can attract things out of thin air, and receive many comments on their voice or abilities to make their life experiences sound a lot less gruesome than it really is. kind of in their own little world and has open demeanor. often times you see these people unexpectedly associating with others that "make no sense" for them or in environments that "make no sense for them". side note: the biggest struggle these people will face is people trying to mold them to be somebody they're not. they love to expand wherever they can. celebrities with jupiter in 3rd; lana del rey, lionel messi, jim carey, and gordon ramsey.

saturn in 3rd house - mean big business ok!! let me tell you, these people are amazing at using their environments for their endeavors. they're very humble speakers, reserved and kind of talk when asked to. they are great at explaining principles of underlying things, usually seems older than what they really are. they stick to one thing at a time, and they are actually easy to read while talking to them. their body language is more telling than their words sometimes. watch a saturn in 3rd house's jaw clench when they are stressed, or crack their knuckles while thinking heavily. celebrities with this placement; steve jobs, kylie jenner, bjork, zoe kravitz, etc.

uranus in 3rd house - "you can't outdo the doer," is what i get from this placement. highly intellectual people, makes significant shifts into the world. when they speak, they're actually very good at impressions, get told they don't look like how they sound, or will attract many "haters" because they challenge status quo mentality. they will never stand down when communicating their deepest interests. they seem quirky & nerdy, however highly reliable and feels a strong sense of "these people need me." as they become older, they are more cherished, while they are younger they might seem air headed. their voices are so unique to them, that you cannot easily be reminded of them by others. they are completely in their own lanes. one of a kinds. celebrities with this placement; albert einstein, elon musk, celine dion, michael jordan, etc.

neptune in 3rd house - has a deep understanding of the environment they're in. they are very quiet and timid. these people really like to connect to people based off their souls and not their physical forms. and when they speak, they have a genuine tone and strive for genuine connection. sometimes, these people think many people they cross paths with are meant to make them feel good, feel bad, question, etc. highly accepting and others can admire this person too. seems ditzy, but on the inside is a whirlpool of feeling and emotions they sense. sometimes they can get abnormal praise, simply for the way they express themselves. i notice with these people they love to make facial movements when speaking, like very dramatically sometimes. you can always tell when these people are nervous too, watch how many times they shake their feet to soothe themselves. always seems very introspective wherever they go. celebrities with this placement; al pacino, leonardo dicaprio, beyonce, kendrick lamar, etc.

pluto in 3rd house - bringing pluto into this mix, wherever they go they love to change what they can in their environments. they want to change things for the better, and usually really find interest in talking about things that isn't so typical in conversation. they are very serious people when in discussion. they hate to say a lot without leaving impact. these people will sound much older and have a profound tone. often they bring the collective darkness to a collective lightness. i notice they love using metaphors, talking in 3rd person, and dropping their egos a lot in conversations. makes undeniable changes to societal norms or social structures. these are life changers and add some humanitarianism to everyday encounters, really love dropping a lot of their own lore too! celebrities with this; angelina jolie, martin luther king, adam levine, kylian mbappe.

A little bit of backstory for Eloise - I’ll do an actual drawing etc etc in the future but for now if you’re interested!!:

Eloise has a brother, Leonard (Leo) who is a year older than her (I want to draw him soon!!) and her parents are both (unfortunately 😔🙏) still very much alive. If the family had continued to the 1930s, they would DEFINITELY have been part of the Sacred 28, making it the Sacred 29 instead. Her father was an only child so he inherited everything, and her mother is Elladora Babbit née Black, the woman who started the Black family tradition of beheading useless house elves😭 (and yes unfortunately that makes Headmaster Black Eloise’s uncle😫).

Eloise was kept a secret from the rest of magic society her whole life. In my imagination, the pureblood families have so much inbreeding amongst themselves that it’s not uncommon for them to give birth to squibs. Part of pureblood culture is not announcing they’ve given birth to a child until they’ve shown signs of magic - normally around 3/4 years old at most. When Eloise never showed ANY signs of magic, she was just their shameful secret. On her eleventh birthday when it was all but confirmed she was a squib, she was burned off the family tree and spent the next five years at a muggle finishing school. Always looking to take advantage of whatever they could get, however, Eloise’s parents arranged a marriage between her and the firstborn son of a wealthy muggle landowner when she came of age.

Her family had no idea that she was admitted to Hogwarts (they cut off all ties to her and disowned her) and Leo, who had always been fiercely protective of her growing up was simultaneously devastated and ecstatic that he could see his sister again. It’s been really hard to repair the relationship though, as there is a lot of resentment that they cannot get over even though they want to😭. And, for as much as her parents dictated everything about how her life has gone, Eloise can’t help but try to work hard to get their love and approval as it’s all she ever thought she wanted. And now that she’s in a position to become the daughter they’ve always desired, she feels a lot of resentment towards herself. She feels as if she’s betraying the young girl who was abandoned by her family, because she wants their approval so badly (it will take a while for her to get over this😔🙏)

In terms of the personality I did it a bit like the sims where I just max things out bc I think everything in the middle is boring jajajaja. But:

Shy: not shy in the sense she can’t talk to other people and she isn’t necessarily socially awkward. She just doesn’t always know what to say and will remain silent if she thinks she has nothing to add to a conversation instead of yapping away (BUT unfortunately rambles and over explains herself to not be misunderstood when she does talk, THANKS narcissistic mother), and normally she wishes people would ignore her. When the Daily Prophet article came out about her “miraculous” recovery and introduction to magical society she HATED it & she HATES all of the people trying to talk to her and befriend her.

Active: NOT active as in super energetic. She just wakes up really early and always needs to keep herself busy. She gets anxious if she doesn’t have anything to do - but, she includes thinking as doing something, and often retreats into her thoughts and doesn’t realize when people are talking to her.

I think grouchy and nice can exist together so with this one I put it in the middle. She’s both simultaneously😭

Aaaand with cowardly/brave, she thinks she is really cowardly for going back to her parents so easily and wanting their love so badly, and hates herself for it (not realizing it’s an accumulation of a lifetime of emotional trauma). But lots of times when things get very high-stakes she will jump in and do incredibly reckless things without thinking of the consequences, although if she stopped to think before she acted she would definitely NOT do them. So maybe brave in actions, cowardly on the inside (IDK)

reminder this is based on my own knowledge/observations of these placements, if it doesn’t completely resonate with you remember other placements, aspects and factors could change how your venus manifests itself and these are meant to be general

Aries Venus: Very affection to your face lovers. There’s emphasis on the effort and excitement of the early stages of initiating relationships which is why it’s said they love the “chase” They’re more impulsive in romance so sometimes they can start/end things VERY quickly or they’re quick when deciding if they’re attracted to/like someone or not. Sometimes if they don’t have placements to stabilize the impulsive energy they can move too fast or expect too much too early. NO aries venus making fun of your crush is NOT the easiest way to express your feelings pls. Enjoys being alone but seethes at couples post. Despite having detached feelings they definitely can be possessive. Need relationships that makes them stop and smell the roses but still feel their autonomy.

Taurus Venus: They love to provide wellness and stability in their relationships. He clicked on your photo icon and scrolled through your pictures obsessively. Your profile description simply saying “I get what I want…😈.” He smiled at the quote and continued scrolling through your profile before quickly hitting the like button.

He was growing a bit nervous as the time went by. You hadn’t matched with him yet…You were coming home after a horrific date with a potential, but he was atrocious. Your make up was light, but you looked like you were glowing. You took an Uber there figuring you might just be going with Mr. Strong tonight. You were pulling up and he was standing at the entrance waiting for you. He took a sip of his drink and looked into those green eyes and cleared his throat feeling as though he was being sucked in. “So this is just for fun then?” You gave demur smile and nodded. “Essentially, yes. A connection always leads to something more especially with the physical parts are involved.” You crossed your legs and your foot swiped past his leg.

“I do want love yes..but I don’t know I figured maybe I could find it with someone here. I know that sounds stupid.” You stopped him. “It doesn’t sound stupid. he got shitty grades at school, and specifies that this was because he couldn’t concentrate, but when it comes to cooking, something he’s really interested in, he can completely hyper focus on it with such an intense dedication that he gets *extremely* good at it and neglects his own well-being in the process. when it comes to syd’s business plan, and the IRS stuff that could cause sugar to lose her house, he struggles to focus on it, despite the fact that he knows how important it is. he prioritises the wrong stuff too, focusing on getting fresh ingredients for the beef and fixing up the menu and the way the staff work, instead of the glaring financial problems.

he’s super restless and fidgety, always on the go, fiddling with his spoon. he’s impatient with people and loses his temper really easily which points to a problem with regulating emotions. he’ll fly off the handle, and he’s bitter and spiteful about syd getting a good review. he throws things, he smashes stuff up, he gets in people’s faces and then regrets it later.

he’s impulsive and does stuff without thinking about the consequences. he hires syd without consulting anyone, and isn’t actually in a position to pay her. he organised the ballbreaker tournament to bring in money in spite of the fact that the restaurant wasn’t capable of handling the crowd (side note: he’s so proud until richie tells him off for it and i find it so adorable). he owes money to the IRS and to cicero but he’s gonna use his money to renovate his restaurant instead bc why the fuck not. he jumps in without thinking to break up fights and gets himself hurt and has done this as a little kid.

also the rejection sensitivity! of course it’s natural to be upset when mikey cuts him off, but carmy takes it really really really badly. he’s been rejected and his whole world has ended, it causes a complete downward spiral and he sees the rejection as caused by a flaw in himself. that if he can do something to make mikey proud then it’ll fix things, but it never does, so he just carries on constantly feeling rejected and not being able to cope with it. he’s got extremely low self-esteem and holds himself to very high standards, and uses cooking to seek approval. he wants mikey’s approval, he stuck it out in shitty jobs because he likes when people think his food is good. he’s got problems in his other relationships too, struggling to make friends at school, and cutting people off and withdrawing from everyone. socially he gives up, but professionally he works to become perfect. i remember jeremy once saying in an interview that carmy is very all or nothing and feels like if he doesn’t get what he wants it’ll basically kill him.

also i was chatting with @carmensberzattos about this and she pointed out when he just gives up on his play on the panettone, which seems like classic adhd “this wasn’t perfect immediately so i’m giving up on it”

i also think mikey probably had adhd too, but for him it presented more as him being loud and boisterous, and it also puts you more at risk of struggling with addiction.

ARC Review: Any Duke in a Storm by Amalie Howard

Vibes: romance on the high seas, badass heroines, ridiculously besotted heroes, and sword fight boners

Heat Index: 7/10.

Lady Lisbeth, countess, divorcee, and spy, is on the run. She's taken on the persona of Bonnie Bess, feared by all--except her new sailing master, the infuriating Raphael Saint. Problem one: Raphael may be a part of the smuggling ring Lisbeth is attempting to infiltrate. Problem two: she is, sadly, both extremely annoyed by and extremely attracted to him. Problem three: she may just have to rely on him if they're going to get away from the people pursuing her in one piece.

I was, to be honest, a little worried about how Amalie would pull this off. A lot of pirate-adjacent romances can get super fetishistic super fast. Plus, Raphael (who is of mixed-race ancestry) could easily dip into the Exotic Brown Man caricature. However, after I let her do her thing, I was pleasantly surprised with a romance that is both heartfelt and ridiculously sexy, with a solid dose of adventure. It's worth the risk!

Quick Takes:

--If you're a fan of "man falls first and harder" in romance... You'll love this. Lisbeth is a very guarded, icy heroine who's here to do a job and doesn't have time for nonsense. Raphael... is so naturally flirtatious, first off--but he's also much more in touch with his emotions and isn't afraid of letting Lisbeth know that he's interested. The sexual tension is THICK, but their banter and interplay is another huge part of the fun. They play off each other so well, and it all begins with a SWORDFIGHT!

--Raphael does bring a lot of humor to the story. In a lot of ways, he reminds me (and this is a compliment) of Prince Naveen from The Princess and The Frog? Like, he's very consciously leaning into being FRANCH, and he never misses an opportunity to hit on Lisbeth, but he also genuinely appreciates her talents and abilities and has a lot of really sweet moments.

He's also super secure in himself, which brings up another thing I loved about this. Raphael isn't by any means "feminine", and he definitely has several scenes wherein he takes a dominant role in his dynamic with Lisbeth. But he's also very comfortable with being, like... pretty. And delicate. He's a swashbuckler, but he'll also joke about wearing her blouses, and revel in the newfound possibilities of her taking control in the bedroom. There's a very "local man realizes he may have a bit of a submissive side and he's GOOD with it" vibe to it all.

--I don't usually like kids in romance, but here we have a legitimately good one! Lisbeth comes into the story familiar with Narina, a twelve-year-old girl whose mother she was friends with. Narina becomes a part of their adventures, and she's... fucking hilarious? Like, a foul-mouthed, snarky young girl who has a knack for piracy. And it's one of those things where Lisbeth is always like "DECORUM" because she's attempting to save this child's manners, and Raphael (who of course has an immediate affinity with Narina, NATURALLY) can't help but indulge her and encourage her wrongs. It's adorable, it makes him even hotter in a "doting father" kind of way and I loved the conclusion it reached.

--I'm really not an expert on this particular part of history, so correct me if my impression is wrong. But it felt like Howard made an effort to represent the unique interplay of cultures across the islands, as well as how one really isn't that different from the other. Raphael, as I mentioned, is French--but he's also of Indian and Creole descent. The novel doesn't delve too deeply into the complexities there, but you do get the sense from Raphael that he hasn't really fit into any of the boxes offered to him by nineteenth century society, as a French duke who isn't white and is very much his father's legitimate heir.

But I really appreciate seeing a book that really didn't take place in the ballroom, or ballroom adjacent, or really in England at all. You have a great sense of life at sea here, as well as some island-hopping, a detour to America, and so on. It offers a much bigger, grander world than a lot of conventional Victorian romances.

--There's a great emotional beating heart here, and you really feel Lisbeth falling for this man, essentially against her will, while he steadfastly waits for her to recognize her own feelings. It leads to a great culmination, and some truly swoony emotions.

The Sex:

Um, really good. I do want to call out that Lisbeth is pansexual, and the book doesn't shy away from that; one of the supporting characters is her ex-lover, and at one point another friend is outright like "oh wait, you like dudes too?" I loved that, and I loved that it's seriously not a big deal, just this known thing about her and her experiences.

But yeah. This shit is hot. There's not a huge emphasis on penetrative sex. Like it, happens, but there are a lot of other things that happen, and they do not feel any less like sex. (Including one scene that I don't want to spoil, but you don't see a lot of that exact configuration in historical romance, and..... it's so good.)

Raphael has piercing(s!) and tattoos, and Lisbeth's obsession with them is certainly incorporated. And like I mentioned earlier--there's some exploration of both of them discovering New Things about themselves together. Essentially, they both go into this believing they prefer to be dominant, and realize that they're both, perhaps... switch-y. This leads up to a scene towards the very end that delighted me Very Much. Put simply: the sex in this book is REALLY great.

Like I said, I was at first a little worried about how this one would turn out. However, I was ultimately really happy with where it went. Seeking a "woman and her overeager dangerous himbo go do piracy together" book? This is it.

✦ Overall, I think Gagamaru is good at pretty much all sports. While he’s not especially good at giving advice, he naturally demonstrates how to do things well so you can observe, take notes, and try to replicate.

✦ And unlike Gagamaru, you have a lot of emotional sharpness, which Gagamaru lacks. He doesn’t really get other people’s mentality. He’s not very interested in it, and that distance is also what tends to separate him from others. Not that he complains—he’s very happy this way. But I think he’d be a bit intrigued by your ability to connect with others easily, something he doesn’t have. It’s like you watch him do crazy tricks as if they were nothing.

✦ "I looooove life sciences, marine biology in particular (it’s my major). I love weird little creatures as well, like bugs and reptiles." "I like tidepooling on rocky shores and hiking." "If I have a way to be in nature away from human civilization, you bet your ass I’m gonna be there." All of this is very Gagamaru-coded. Honestly, I don’t see any other Blue Lock character loving unusual creatures on earth as much as he does. He lives in the mountains when he’s not at Blue Lock! He knows tons of high spots, places to chill, and get the best naps of his life. If you can keep up, he’ll show you.

✦ He’s not into theory or what you find in books; he’s not book smart but very street smart. He knows how to handle himself and survive in nature—it’s second nature to him.

"Animal cruelty makes him sad (he said he would fight perpetrators)." "His favorite seasons are all of them since mountains and forests have all kinds of different looks during them." the first Zelda game I ever completed :) it will always hold a very special place in my heart!! I’ve been wanting to replay it again so badly lately even tho it’s only been like a few months since I finished it (I can just use my bad memory privileges—)

listen, Twi’s my guy. I love him sm. I love running around Hyrule with him and holding all the cats and petting all the goats 😭😭😭😭😭 this game just hits on all the nostalgia for me I can’t listen to the score without tearing up 🥺 also I’m ngl at the beginning I genuinely didn’t like Midna at all and by the end I actually physically CRIED when she left so…. good job Nintendo. this game is literally the BEST 20/10 I could play it forever and never get sick of it

Breath of the Wild

so BOTW is actually the game I heard of first? like it introduced me to the concept of LoZ, and I even played it a bit a couple years ago, but I actually started playing it after I finished Twilight Princess. with some experience under my belt I enjoyed this game so much better haha

my favorite part is the way the game lets you solve problems in multiple different ways!!! I really enjoyed the shrines, I don’t think I ever really got super frustrated and had to look smth up with this game and it made me feel really smart hehe :) also the combat is SO satisfying but I rarely ever actually engage bc I uhhh I don’t want my weapons to break 💔

Wind Waker

this one I borrowed from a friend :) my only complaint is it’s far too short 😭 I also went into this one determined to figure everything out by myself (riding my BOTW high) and I got SO confused like halfway through I literally had to look up a walkthrough 😭 ik that’s on me tho, I unfortunately get confused very easily 😔 this is another game that I’m so tempted to replay but I do not own it so 😭😭😭😭😭😭 NINTENDO PLS RELEASE THIS GAME AND TP BOTH ON SWITCH I AM BEGGING

the worldbuilding in this game is INSANE actually like they went so hard??? I love the implications of like… this is the same world from OOT but flooded and the people alive now don’t even realize, the world as it is now is all they know. it’s just so interesting to me. and I love Aryll and grandma sm like I would literally sail to the ends of the earth for them

I promise as the moderator of this competition I won’t campaign for any specific sibling sets after this but I cannot let my faves Jiang Yanli, Wei Wuxian, and Jiang Cheng lose in the first round when they were seeded pretty high.

For context, here is who I’m talking about:

Look at those babies!

The Yunmeng Trio are three siblings from the book Mo Dao Zu Shi or the TV show The Untamed.  They consist of oldest sister Jiang Yanli, middle adopted brother Wei Wuxian, and youngest brother Jiang Cheng.  Their relationship is crucial to the story, as it follows Wei Wuxian and his dynamic with both siblings (but especially Jiang Cheng) influences a lot of his decisions, which in turn influences a lot of the state of the world they live in as a whole.

Could these siblings win a physical fight against other sibling sets? YES.  Jiang Cheng is a very skill swordsman and has a magic lightning whip.  Wei Wuxian invented a new kind of magic and by and large is super overpowered (can take on hundreds of people at a time due to his ability to control ghosts/corpses/harness resentful energy).  Yanli, while not much of a physical fighter, can easily win over anyone’s heart with the power of soup.  (Seriously, in the book it lists her weapons as “love and soup”)  Everyone loves her, especially her brothers, which lowkey makes her an extremely powerful character because they’d do anything for her.

Do these siblings have sibling swag? YES.  They bicker! Especially WWX and JC.  Yanli loves to make her brothers soup and they always argue over who has the bigger portion!  They have inside jokes!  JC and WWX are always nitpicking at each other but will not allow anyone else to do so!  They’re all traumatized by their parents in different ways and therefore lean on each other and are unhealthily codependent because of it!  Whenever one of the brothers goes off by himself Yanli always asks the other one to go bring him back, and when she couldn’t do that she waded out into an active battlefield to try to find them!

Do they love each other? YES.  “We are the closest three in the world.”  Jiang Cheng sacrificing himself so Wei Wuxian doesn’t get taken hostage.  Wei Wuxian convincing his friend to perform ethically dubious and extremely dangerous surgery on him to try to get Jiang Cheng back to 100%.  The sole time Yanli loses her temper in the show, it’s because people are yelling at Wei Wuxian and not showing him respect!  She wore her wedding outfit when she and Jiang Cheng went to visit Wei Wuxian in exile because he wouldn’t be able to be at her actual wedding and she wanted him to see it!  Jiang Cheng suggested that Yanli let Wei name her son!  That scene made me cry no joke!

Are they interesting? YES.  I just described how much they love each other but the show actually begins with us seeing Jiang Cheng supposedly kill Wei before we jump back in time, so you know they have some intense emotional arcs going on!  Wei Wuxian was adopted when he and JC were around 6, and his status as an insanely talented and amazing cultivator plays really interestingly with the fact that his younger brother will be clan leader because WWX isn’t in the bloodline, and that influences JC immensely because in a way he has to deal with some of the worst parts of being a younger sibling while also having to deal with things an older sibling would otherwise have to.  Once Wei starts doing big plot things and becomes Public Enemy Number 1, JC and Yanli have to be careful with how they navigate the political world while trying to rebuild their clan and navigate an engagement that could unite their clan with a much more powerful one, but they still try to protect their brother.  Bodies start dropping.  They’re all traumatized over various events that occur before they’re even fully adults.  They make me feel so many emotions it’s not even funny.

tldr: I love them. please don’t let them lose in the first round please just give them this they’ve suffered enough.

Karina || red flags: knight of pentacles rx, the fool, three of cups || Inconsistent. Get's bored easily. At times, she may have a hard time following through with her commitments. Karina could also be the type to put fun over duty or commitment. Naive when it comes to flirting - as in… she doesn't realize how far she's taking it, and the other person ends up thinking she actually has feelings for them, when she was just having a good time and messing around? Doesn't always realize the consequence of her actions, basically.

green flags: ten of pentacles, eight of swords, the strength || Absolutely not one to backstab others, no matter how much they have hurt her. She always tries to be the bigger person and give them nothing to shit-talk her over. Compassionate, loving, trustworthy. Will always be by her loved ones' sides, no matter what. Even if it looks like she's not super present, if you give her a call, she'll come running to help you!

Winter || red flags: seven of pentacles, the magician, ten of wands || High maintenance. Will drag things out (issues or the talking stages) or create certain situations to test people's loyalty and/or interest. "Studies" people in order to become exactly what they want/like. Becoming close to her is a whooole investment, money wise, time wise, effort, etc. Pretty demanding.

green flags: four of cups, the star, four of wands || For the most part, she's pretty chill, to be honest. Not one to be overly-dramatic or jealous if the other person is paying more attention to someone else. She's just veeery unbothered lol. Doesn't get much influenced by other people's negativity, nor does she want to make people feel affected by her own negative thoughts/feelings.

Giselle || red flags: nine of pentacles, queen of cups, ten of swords || Tends to think very highly of herself; a little vain. Materialistic. Very, very sensitive and dramatic! Needs to be re-assured of people's love for her every other day. Moody. May have a hard time controlling her jealousy. Her emotions easily get the best of her - that's the big point here…

green flags: nine of swords, five of wands rx, king of pentacles || Because she's very emotional, she tends to express her worries often and very openly, which is good. She seeks to fix problems right away because she really doesn't like fighting with people; avoids conflicts at all costs. Compromises easily. Dependable. Doesn't mind spending a lot of money on her loved ones - she wants to provide them with the best there is!

Ningning || red flags: three of pentacles, ace of wands, page of pentacles || Always has an opinion + will give it whether you ask for it or not. Needs multiple people to tell her the same thing for her to take it as a fact - like, "she's a bad friend" or "you shouldn't go out alone after 10PM, it's dangerous" - which can make people feel like she doesn't trust their word enough. May spend money rather irresponsibly since she can get easily influenced by trends and people's opinions on what's cool or not anymore. Buys people gifts instead of solving issues properly?

green flags: four of pentacles, ten of cups, five of pentacles || Humble. Doesn't see anyone as "bellow her"/less than her. Doesn't need much to be satisfied and grateful. Values the small things in life, as well as people's small gestures of kindness. Protective of her loved ones! Puts others before her.

What amazes me most about Wednesday is how the show manages to be so good when so much of it is objectively just kind of crap. Not terrible crap, but kind of lack-lustre and easily dismissed and ignored. But somehow it manages to pull something great out of that.

The most obvious thing is that in tone and vibes, it largely ignores what the Addams family is, how they work and what they stand for. It's actually horror, not horror comedy, and it isn't really any contrast to what we consider normal life. Which is explained in-universe, sure, but I'm not actually convinced that it's the most interesting thing they could have done.

Its setting in a store brand Hogwarts is hardly original. They themed it around Edgar Allan Poe, for seemingly no reason other than that he's cool (I don't think he was a founder or alumni, and he certainly doesn't super relevant thematically). There's the vague idea of "what if Hogwarts had american high school cliques", which they don't do anything with. Harry Potter is nowadays much maligned and for very good reasons, but it did know how to make its fictional school seem interesting, deep and mysterious, and Wednesday is very lacking there. The biggest issue is that we don't spend enough time exploring the various students and their deals. We do it a bit, but it could have been more.

The wider world building creates the idea that the world has "norms" and "weirdos", which seems to be the officially accepted nomenclature, and treats them almost as if they were different sub-species. Some people are just born "weirdo", from "weirdo" families, and that's how it is. That's basic urban fantasy stuff - very basic, in fact. And again, it's not that interesting, and the show doesn't do anything with it. A key bit of classic Addams lore is that they consider themselves to be normal, and everyone else a bit weird, and thus question our ideas of what is and isn't normal. In Wednesday, these things are clearly delineated, which helps with the oppressive tone of the show, but makes it overall less deep.

And then there is the murder mystery, which is the big driver of the plot. Except it's barely a murder mystery at all. Everything we learn is because the main character has a vision that just tells them a key bit of background, or where the next important scene will be set, or, eventually, who the murderer is. Things barely ever flow, and there is very little deducting and reasoning; we just get told stuff. Again, it's not terrible, none of this is, but it could be better.

As for things that are actually terrible, I think enough has been written about the love triangle already. It never feels like Wednesday is ever interested in either the boys (her bond with Eugene is considerably stronger and more important). I think what goes underappreciated in discussions of the love triangle is that both boys are suspects in the murder mystery, and remain so until the final episode. As a result, there is always a certain distance. We don't ever actually get comfortable with any of them; we're always supposed to be wary and keep our distance, and indeed, Wednesday does. In the end, we totally get why the boys are in love with her (how could you not be? Just look at her dancing), but she barely shows any signs of attraction, and they certainly never become close friends. That's not the only problem, but it really doesn't help.

But despite this the show works anyway, because while the overall plot is a bit meh, the moment to moment stuff and in particular the actors are just stellar. Jenny Ortega: Amazing. Gwendoline Christie: Love her, she should be in everything. Thing is just perfect. And while the show drops the ball on the official romance, they really nail the relationship between Wednesday and Enid, the emotional cornerstone of the whole show. I just love watching these two together.

In the end, we have the kind of show where I logically agree with basically every single mean-spirited criticism I've ever seen about it, but at the same time I love it with my whole heart. Because it is flawed on a high level, but it nails everything in the details.

So I take a lot of issue with p much everything that happens after the Alma Toran arc. There were a lot of rumors going around at the time that Ohtaka was being rushed to close things out bc interest in the series was waning or she was gearing to switch projects to Orient or smth, don't know how true that was but from what came out I think it might be reasonable. To keep this short and less literary analysis, I'll stick to my issues with just Ja'far and Ja'far centric things. And imma put it under a read more bc it got way longer than expected lmao

So I loved Ja'far as a character early on, I thought he was super interesting with his dual nature of the brutal assassin & loyal government official and he serves as a great counterpart to one of the most interesting characters in the series, Sinbad. He's someone who is resolute in his loyalty but unafraid to course correct Sinbad. He's a reminder to Sinbad's dark past and the primary motivator of a brighter future. But a lot of that gets lost in the final arc.

I think part of it has to do with Sinbad's character change from morally gray and emotionally complicated leader (something we don't see a lot in anime) to self-serving, fully corrupted 'villain'. I could write a whole damn essay on Sinbad. But in this shift, Ja'far becomes rather weak and disappears into the background.

He's no longer guiding Sinbad or reprimanding him when he goes too far. Instead, he seems suddenly blind to Sinbad's true motives and depressingly lost in the final conflict. Like if they had revealed that Arba had brainwashed him to stand down, I would believe it. Even in his final plea for Sinbad to come down from his high horse, we get a wishy washy, emotional argument that Sinbad easily charms his way out of. When you compare this to the scene at the beginning of season two or even in SnB at the end of the slave arc, it's like a totally different characters. In those scenes, Ja'far was unapologetically brutal, even slapping Sinbad to wake him up and give him a fierce reality check. He doesn't take any of the dour, half-assed promises to do better. He's mean and in SnB he reminds Sinbad that he promised to kill him if he veers too far from his path.

And this has always been Ja'far's role in the series. He is Sinbad's first and most loyal supporter but also his harshest critic. Ja'far, who grew up without any sense of morality, serves as Sinbad's conscious. It's what I love most about their relationship. But all of that seems to disappear at the end of the series. Sinbad becomes the corrupt capitalist dictator and Ja'far his secretary.

Not to mention that when the whole 'mind control' thing happens and we find out that people who were formally fallen are immune, Ja'far was such an obvious choice to lead the main group in their siege on Godbad, to be the guide that shows them the way to victory. He would have been immune bc of his status was a Black Djinn host and also would have been able to kind of fulfill his promise of killing Sinbad until he gets back on course. I cannot explain the absolute jawdrop that transcended the fandom when the final player was revealed to be Whatshisfuck from Reim. People were rioting and fleeing the fandom en masse when the final arc was coming out, it was Not Good.

I love Ja'far as a character and Magi had such a strong play at moral ambiguity and the ethics of global politics and I think a lot of that was lost in the final arc in favor of a shounen typical, he gets the girl and defeats the Big Evil ending and I will forever be bitter about it. Like at one point I wrote out my 'if i was in charge' ending lmao. The last scene of Ja'far standing in Sindria, saying that he's waiting for Sinbad's return was heartbreaking.

omg anon this is a FUN question!!! i’m only going to answer for touya-nii, bmb dabi + tag dabi, but if you’re interested in my other iterations as well (the twins, 50s!dabi + DA!touya) or other characters just send in another ask and i’ll answer for them, too! c:

HAHAHA that is true for the most part, minus tag!dabi + bmb!dabi (at least in the rich boy complex bit but yeah they def all have hard exteriors hehe). one thing they all share is that they each become marginally softer and sweeter beneath the veil of night, particularly between two and five in the morning. it is a combination of the sleepy haze fatigue casts over their brains, as well as the faux/pseudo protection nighttime brings with it—they are all ever-so-slightly more willing and more likely to be more honest, open, raw and vulnerable during the deep, dark hours of the night. it feels as though those confessions and fears and desires mumbled out into her hair or skin or nightgown or sheets will stay hidden in the night, or will burn up with the rising sun, as if they never happened at all.

more specifically, though:

touya-nii: there are definitely moments before my snowman & me where touya is a little softer, with his behaviour in i take my pills and i’m happy all the time, especially at the end of the piece, being a good example. anything that rudely reminds touya that he isn’t actually entirely invincible and completely in control of his life and the lives of those surrounding him will more often than not have him seeking out the comfort only his little sister can provide him with (and his blood relatives are often a very strong and stark reminder of this, and thus a trigger), especially since she is one constant in his life where he can be 99.9% sure she is his to entirely control and predict. it’s kind of ironic that the reminder of his lack of complete and total control is exactly what causes his usually meticulously controlled emotions to spiral.

touya also has a tendency to continually grow incrementally softer towards his reader the longer they’ve been officially together.

bmb dabi: bmb dabi actually gets soft ridiculously easily, and sometimes all it takes is a dazzling smile, or a pretty pout, or glittering eyes blinking wide and pleading at him, to make him totally melt. he is also very much not immune to that sweet, playful begging that’s pitched high and full of giggles but not necessarily whiny or super bratty. bmb dabi is also such a sucker for waterworks and intense negative emotions in those he loves/cares about; reader starts crying in the middle of their fight in part two and his demeanour almost instantly changes.

additionally, bmb dabi just genuinely loves seeing those he cares about happy, especially if he is the source or reason for that happiness (stems mostly from selfishness and arrogance + deeply rooted/buried, subconscious self-esteem issues; it makes him feel very important). while he doesn’t like to be told what to do or ordered around, he does enjoy the payoff that comes with fulfilling a want or need of someone he loves, especially if it’s of his own violation, which almost always works in tandem to satisfy something that he wants as well, or if it’s something that’s been asked of him in a gentle and sweet way (as opposed to demanded, ordered, or whined/screamed out in a bratty tantrum). even so, this emotional payoff is something uncontrollable, and something that still blazes in his chest (albeit less intensely) any time he gives into a request or demand made by his reader, which is one of the reasons why he has such a difficult time saying no to her.

tag dabi: genuine honesty really gets him if it comes from someone he actually gives a fuck about. something that leaves his girl raw and ripped open by her own vying fingers, bearing it all to him, for him, ribs and heart and soul, will somewhat melt his steely exterior. he’s phenomenal at reading others and deciphering the nuances and truths embedded in their facial expressions and tones of voice (which is why he’s so damn good at subtle manipulation), so it is exceptionally easy for him to tell when someone is being truthful and authentic. and despite the fact that he himself often isn’t truthful + authentic, it’s a trait he seriously values in others.

when he is genuine and sincere and truthful with someone, it signifies that he trusts them and cares about them deeply, so to him and in his mind, when someone is genuine and authentic with him, it means they trust him enough to be open and vulnerable with him, and he appreciates that a lot (it makes him feel special and significant, which in turn softens him a bit). this, of course, usually works in his favour as well, as he will exploit the trust + honesty + insecurities of others (shared in confidence with him) as one of his many tools to manipulate them into doing exactly what he wants.

the only other thing that will make him exceptionally soft and is almost completely reserved for his baby and his baby alone is seeing her in extreme psychological and/or physical distress. it ignites and flares his Daddy Instincts, has a fierce need to protect and nurture surging hot and blistering in his chest—a blaze that entirely consumes his being—and suddenly he must shelter and safeguard her, must take care of her, must make it better. this is demonstrated in the beginning of part two, when he tends to her and her psychological and physical wounds at the motel after keigo’s abusive outburst.

so those are the things that’ll make each of them soft with their reader, tho now that i’ve answered and i’m rereading your ask i’m realizing that you might’ve actually been asking what will make them be vulnerable with their reader, in which case the answer is:

touya-nii: exactly the same answer as what makes him soft. touya-nii possesses several sociopathic traits, one of those being his extreme selfishness; the things that make him soft almost always pertain to his own needs or serve him in some way, shape, or form.

bmb dabi: after a sacred or a deeply personal interaction, like sex or being intimate in any way. it’s almost a transaction to him; if you can make him feel safe and you’ve already worked on gaining his trust (as well as have already opened up to him!), he’ll open up to you in these moments of intense or extreme intimacy, or directly following those moments when the remnants of such a substantial and personal connection still wavers in the air between the two of you. in other words, he has to feel a deep connection with you first, and only after that has been established and solidified to concrete will you even have a hope of him being vulnerable, which will only be possible/come out when the conditions are ideal and he feels exceptionally safe. example: when he shares a piece of his past with reader in part four, after a sexual encounter.

tag dabi: either when he judges that it will be beneficial for him to reveal something about himself (example: revealing to reader that his mother was/is an addict in the middle of one of their more vicious fights, in an effort to knock reader down a few pegs and gain the upper hand again) or, similar to bmb dabi + kind of connecting with what makes tag dabi soft, if you trust him enough to be vulnerable with him AND he loves/cares about you, he will be more likely to be vulnerable with you, too. both are crucial components to the equation, and the chances of him revealing a shard of himself to you are even higher if you’ve just been very open and emotional with him, or if you’re going through an exceptionally difficult time. example: him revealing bits of his family past to reader while during their motel stay.

The theme is death.

And I made the mistake of watching this movie after a mini binge of Cinama Therapy episodes, so i went from being an emotional wreck to watching the slowest drama i’ve ever witnesses and the theme is death.

maybe a better analysis would be the theme is the acceptance of death or the inevitability of death.

visually the film changes from black and white to slightly colored to fit the mood, but it’s always muted and almost unnoticeable at first. lots of interesting use of light in the shots. loved the 6 government men in their ye olde cars. the all black aesthetic that the government goons had going on was clearly an allusion to the grim reaper in a black cloak but it was also giving ye olde gangster vibes. also i really liked the ye olde cars.

at one point in the slowness my mind wandered to how good the cast was at acting as if it was the 1950s in a rural setting. and then i started mulling over cellphones and how people have changed over the past 75 years. and how if this movie were made taking place in 2023 that there would have been this sense of urgency that would have muddied the message of the inevitability of death because in the modern era people have attention spans that rival that of fruit flies. ….that’s not really getting across what i’m trying to convey.

in a modern movie about death i expect it to be about fighting death or cheating death or trying to become immortal via magic. like contrast this against the movie I Kill Giants. 95% of that movie is the little girl playing make believe in the woods to distract herself from the fact that her mother is dying of cancer. then the thing she is imagining tells her that death is inevitable and she better go home and spend time with her mother while her mom’s still alive which she does. which is so unbelievable on like a psychological level. but it’s also like, just the first two stages of grief then we skip over 3 and 4 and sneak a little 5 in there just to end it. other media with like bringing someone back from the dead is just stage three, bargaining. this movie is depression and acceptance. mostly depression though. slow depression.

the movie also has non binary rep. and a guy without hands and a blind guy for some disability rep. and an effeminate gay man. the guy without hands is also very autistic. and these characters aren’t villains. from a 2003 movie. so that was a pleasant surprise.

it was also nice to watch something where adults are the intended audience and are treated as adults. yeah yeah i’m sure you’re looking at the other stuff i review and are thinking that’s a load of bull from all the anime i review and from the fact that i still talk about naruto in the year 2023 but back when i was still with my ex i ended up watching a lot of marvel/DC movies and those films do not do that. the modern super hero movie for adults try to get you to take a man in an animal costume seriously and most people do. there’s so much “adult” media that’s just audience self inserts saving the world and the only distinction between adult super hero movies and children super hero movies is how dark the screen is and how much blood they show.
