I'm literally writing a fic right now about them making each other normal (worse). They would fuel each other's fucked up kinks <3 But honestly, at the same time they would make each other better in some ways as well. I love that cute shit <33

And this is where I could have ended this response, but because I love these two so much and think about them all the time, I wrote all this:

It depends on the writer just how ”aware” Jervis is. Some writers like to write him permanently stuck in Wonderland and in some versions (mostly Pre-Crisis) it's like he's never even been there. I prefer the versions somewhere in between; the ones where he's lucid most of the time, but slips back into Wonderland under stress. And I especially like the versions where, at times, it is unclear whether he is actually in Wonderland or just faking it to get out off a situation (think Gotham Central #19-22).

I'm saying all this, because Jervis' awareness is very key to how I write this relationship. Aside from those moments when he is genuinely in Wonderland and genuinely disconnected from reality, he is very aware and has a very keen eye in my verse. This comes from the whole hypnotist and general Mind Games World Champion thing. I think as a hypnotist Jervis needs to be very good at reading people to know exactly what to say and do to put people under his spell. And given that he is an expert in mind games himself, it is impossible to play mind games with him. In general, I love the contradiction of a character who pretends to not even be here mentally most of the time, being actually incredibly keen eyed, smart and fucking with people's heads. They think he's lost his mind, but they're the ones who are about to lose their minds. He might seem like he doesn't understand what's going on at all, and sometimes that really is the case, but most of the time he knows exactly what's happening – even better than most people.

How this relates to Hugo is that he basically has immunity to Hugo's bullshit. You cannot play mind games with him, because he knows every trick in the book. He was there when mind games were invented. My Jervis is like a human lie detector, if lie detectors actually worked and Hugo, as we know, is a big fat liar. I love it, I love it, I love it. Hugo cannot stop lying, it's so second nature to him that he lies even when he doesn't necessarily need to and every time, every time Jervis catches him on it. This is where it's at for me. Hugo has been Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlbossing his way though life for 52 years and suddenly there's this 150cm tall 48-year-old man who finally tells him to shut the fuck up. I love it. Immovable object, unstoppable force. I love it.

I just love the frustration that it ignites in Hugo when he cannot lie to get what he wants, when someone is forcing him to be genuine for the first time in over 50 years. I think it would remind Hugo of being young. See, he wasn't born a Girlboss, he had to learn how to Gaslight, how to Gatekeep. He was always shitty and was trying to manipulate and control others from a young age, but it was hard. He made mistakes and things didn't always work out and it left him frustrated. And it's all happening again now, his bullshit doesn't work on Jervis and it makes him feel frustrated, angry and finally depressed. But ultimately, it is all for the better.

I think it's evident reading Pre-Crisis Hugo issues, that he wanted people around him and not just as his little minions that he would dispose of when they weren't of use to him anymore. He has those too, of course, but I'm saying he wouldn't have made sure Magda wasn't defenseless if worse came to pass, had he not truly cared for her, he wouldn't have healed Bruce's wounds and ”died” to protect his secret, had he not cared for him. He wanted people around him and he deeply cared for the few people he was close with. All of his relationships are fucked up, because he is fucked up, but it is clear to me that this man both wanted to love others and was capable of loving others.

He wants people around, but I think it's very difficult for him to let anyone that close. Even though in my verse Jervis is the one person next to Batman (and mayyyybe Joker) that he respects, I don't think that he would ever even consider letting Jervis close, letting Jervis see behind the lies. But that's just the thing, Jervis saw thought them anyway. It was like he was forced to let Jervis close, because he couldn't keep him away. And as stated, it makes him frustrated, angry and even depressed, but ultimately, it is for the better. It does him good to be genuine around someone for once. To stop lying for two seconds and just be himself. It does actually make him more normal.

For example, if Hugo was upset over something, his first response would be to lie that he wasn't, as to not seem weak. Think of when Thorne had him kidnapped and beaten by thugs and Hugo was still going on about how: ”Threats mean nothing to Hugo Strange! You mean nothing to Hugo Strange!” Yet, after he had faked his death, he spent so much time and effort on getting his revenge on Thorne – TWICE. This man had to avenge what he suffered in Thorne's hands TWICE. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure the torture did mean something to Hugo Strange. Plus, we have seen countless times the way he responds to his plans not working out: faking his own death. Seriously, the tiniest thing goes wrong and he's out there faking his death again. This man CANNOT handle setbacks.

Imagine now if Jervis caught him on that first lie, when he pretends to not be upset. Imagine he was forced to face the fact that he very much is upset. Imagine he had go through that emotion, instead of running away from it (to his ”grave”). If he actually sat through that emotion, he would find it isn't the end. It wasn't that bad. Life goes on. Jervis could never fix him, but I do think that he could make him more normal.

And what does Jervis get out of all this? Well, he gets to play with Hugo's nice round ass <3

 Walking through the sewers your boss called his ‘workshop’, you were bringing in coffee – the man refused to sleep, but him working half-asleep wouldn’t be a good idea, considering all the metal and electricity he was working on an hour ago, when you left. Both your hands full due to the two cups, you simply turned down the doorhandle with your elbow. Pushing the door open with your foot, your face was met with your boss’s fist. You dropped both cups of coffee on the ground, and held your face where he had hit you. 

“Are you fucking sorry?!” He exclaimed, wrench in his other hand.

 “What is wrong with you?!” You yelled back, looking at him with wide eyes. You could practically see the gears turning in his head, seeing the red mark forming on your face and the no longer hot coffee on the ground. The two of you stood there, waiting for the other one to say, well, anything. Riddler wasn’t one to apologize, so you decided to-

 “I’m- Sorry-” His voice faltered, and your mouth hung slightly open at his words. 

 “Are you sick?” You asked in response, putting your hand against his forehead.

 “What are you- Don’t touch!” He took your hand off his forehead.

 “You actually apologised! Are you sure you’re okay? Maybe you should rest-”

 “I am fine!”

SCARECROW

 To be fair, scarecrow had asked for your help in his lab. So, there you were, handing him various chemicals and equipment while he prepared a fresh batch of toxin. You were lost in your thoughts, until you heard a yelp from him, and saw the beaker full of boiling water fall off the hot plate. Before you could move, your face was met with his fist and a bit of hot water, followed by you yelping in pain, and silence. You looked up to see your attacker, and was met with a burlap-covered face. The silence was… uncomfortable, to say the least. He – The scarecrow, was staring back at you.

 “Are you fucking sorry?” He asked, much to your surprise. The fuck was that supposed to mean? ‘Are you fucking sorry’ He punched you, not the other way around!

 “...Excuse me?” You managed to sputter, looking at him with a look of confusion. Hell, if he decided to gas you for your ‘disrespect’, you’d take it. At least it wouldn’t be another punch in the face. Instead of an answer, the silence continued on. You were about to excuse yourself, but were stopped by his voice. 

 “Are you all right?” He asked, voice gravelly as usual. You took a few seconds to respond, but nodded. 

 “Yeah… It just burns a bit, that’s all. You just scared me a bit.” You responded, watching his eyes slightly light up towards the end of your sentence. 

 “Good. You can have the rest of the day off as an apology. I’ll… continue working.”

MAD HATTER

Jervis was quite easy to surprise. That wasn’t what you had meant to do this time, but you somehow had managed to do just that. 

 You walked up behind him, carrying various fabrics for his hats. You didn’t realize how quiet you had been, and tapped his shoulder. You were surprised by him yelping, throwing up his arms, one of them hitting you square in your face, making you groan at the sudden pain. Upon hearing it was you, he quickly turned to face you. He took your face in his hands, Worry plastered all over his face.

 “Are you sorry!” He blurted out, his hat had fallen to the ground in the moment.

 “...What?” You questioned, shocked at his outburst. Considering his confusion at your response, he hadn’t realized what he had said in his worry. You saw his expression turn into one of panic, as the realization set in.

 “Oh, I do apologise, I was not very wise!” He apologised, his hands tightening around your face, squishing your cheeks at the same time.

 “Jervis, It’s okay, It’s okay, trust me!” You tried to reassure him, but not prying his hands off.

"The Victorian Moroseness" Gotham!Mad Hatter

I tend to stay away from y/n directly because for me it disconnects the flow of writing. A lot of people like it but it's not my favorite.

Please pay attention to the trigger warnings on this one, my loves, we're going dark.

TW: Suicidal ideation/discussions of different methods of suicide, hypnosis, murder/stalking/criminal acts and angst

Jervis gets himself into periods of depression and low-feelings when he's alone and not plotting. It's easy to remain whimsical yet delightfully criminal when he has something to focus on. It gives him a wicked purpose. Using his abilities to get exactly what he wants and guide their hands through his.

Yet what does he have when his favorite book has finished it's story once again? His companions have left him or they've been incarcerated. He has no concept of a "normal" existence. Alice, his sister, is gone. She's gone and she left this world trying to get away from him. It all makes the bile build in the back of your throat.

It's these moments he sits in a room and stares blankly at the wall. No witticisms or fantasies that will take him out of it. He thinks of how easy it would be to overdose on any of the drugs he has in his bag. Just drift off to sleep, to Wonderland, and not have to worry about any of it ever again.

Perhaps he could hypnotize a group of people to jump into Gotham Harbor with him. Capitalize on how vengeful and "selfish" he could get. Let the pawing hands of the others drag him down to the water as they scramble to stay afloat when he allows them to "wake." It would be more theatrical than just tossing rocks into his pockets, certainly.

He thinks about death a lot in these moments. His own, Alice splayed upon the spike she fell on, the many others he himself has caused... It's so easy to send them off now. What's one more?

Some moments he jumps into finding a romantic Alice. If only he could find his other half, that would fix him. Very unhealthy, seeking out a partner for the idea of them rather than getting to know them at all. Forcing them to say everything he wants them to say and do whatever he wants them to do without concern for what they want. Usually ends in someone getting seriously hurt or him being arrested (again.)

Then he's back here. Rejected again.

He tends to be saved when either A) a grand idea comes along or B) one of his villainous companions reaches out to him. Ah, well, it's all just sunshine again, isn't it? Another wondrous day in the Wonderland he's making for himself in Gotham. He's in control and this time, this time everything is going to go swimmingly!

He also has a thing for any piercings you have too

He'll play with them too if you let him

He's careful not to hurt you

He honestly doesn't really think anything of it or notice it much

Which isn't a bad thing by any means

Bruce doesn't judge based on looks, so however you decide to present yourself is just who you are in his eyes

But he also cares a lot about your interests

He'll happily sit beside you and listen to your music, shop with you for new clothes, and come with you for your latest piercing or tattoo

You name it, he's there

If it means a lot to you, then it means a lot to him

But he does think it's pretty cool to have such a badass partner

Has helped you dye your hair a handful of times

He kind of gets a slight thrill from knowing that he's the only one that gets to see all sides to you

People may see you one way when you're out in public, but he also gets to see you when you're at home sleeping in his bed or cuddled up on his couch watching some crazy show he's never heard of

Arkhamverse Mad Hatter:

- Jervis is startled at first.

- His first instinct is to detach himself from whatever has him captured.

- However when he sees that he’s wrapped up in your arms–he’s surprised.

- If it were anyone else, Jervis would have rolled his eyes and shrugged the arms away.

- But, it was you…his sweet dormouse.

- While he did find your sleepiness troublesome, he can’t help but find it endearing.

- Especially in this moment, where you were so deep in slumber, you reached out to him and nestled yourself into his side.

- After very little debating, Jervis decides to get comfortable alongside you. A small smile forming on his face that mirrored yours.

BTAS Mad Hatter:

- Jervis usually tries to stay prepared for all your sleeping needs.

- Such as blankets, pillows, or plushies.

- Yet sometimes, like anyone else, he just forgets.

- He never expected you to lean on him one day, however.

- Jervis is instantly a blushing red mess.

- He tries to look around for one of your usual items–to no avail.

- He sighs in defeat, but he relishes in the sweet proximity.

- Jervis will rest his head on top of yours, after pressing a gentle kiss to your temple.

- Wee mad lad is the perfect pillow size.

- Jervis is taken aback at first.

- He’s relieved to see it’s just you that’s got him captured.

- At first, Jervis tries to wiggle and squirm out of your arms–but failed.

- You just end up nuzzling closer into his side, a sleepy content smile on your face.

- The soft look on your face causes Jervis to pause his squirming.

- You truly looked really adorable when you were sleeping, he realized.

- Jervis eventually warms up to the idea of being a human pillow, but only for you, and in private.

Harley Quinn:TAS Mad Hatter:

- He rolls his eyes.

- Unlike a couple other Jervi, he's totally used to this.

- And he pretends to be annoyed.

- Jervis will gently try to shake you or pat you, something to get you to wake up.

- When deep down he actually loves it.

- He loves the warmth of your arms.

- He loves how you cling to him, and how your grip gets stronger if he even remotely tries to get away.

- Jervis ensures that whenever you fall asleep, he'll always be within your arms reach.

Joker’s Asylum Mad Hatter:

- Jervis is stunned at first.

- His heart pounds at the tight embrace.

- The beats get faster when he realizes its you.

- Well, this is quite the predicament.

- He's unsure what to make of it, but he can't say he's uncomfortable.

- You are so peaceful and warm.

- Jervis can easily see why you find it incredibly helpful to sleep with something…

- Perhaps he can talk you into taking naps with him like this from now on.

Secret Six Mad Hatter:

- Jervis literally won't allow you to sleep with anything else but him.

- The only exceptions being your childhood plush that always helped you sleep or a hat he's made for you.

- Like HQ:TAS, he always makes himself within your arms reach, so you can latch onto him.

- He just finds you so incredibly adorable.

- You also make the perfect model for all his little hats he manages to make whilst in your capture.

- Jervis also likes the idea of being the last one you see when you doze off and being the first one you see when you wake up.

- He likes to stick close to you, to protect you while you sleep.

- Jervis just loves to be able to make his dormouse comfortable as they sleep away.

Dr. Arkham sighed. “Harvey, we’ve talked about the language. Before we continue the session, please apologize to Edward for what you said about his mother.”

From his place in the so-called ‘friendship circle’ between Jonathan and Waylon, Edward shrugged, “That’s not necessary, Dr. It’s been nearly thirty years since I’ve seen the woman. For all I know, she could be a syphilitic whore.”

Joker cackled and Pamela made a disgusted noise. Dr. Arkham shook his head. “Edward, please. This group therapy session is meant to foster a positive relationship in Arkham. We don’t want a repeat of what happened in the cafeteria yesterday.”

“We don’t?” Joker asked. “Aren’t we all glad that Jervis stabbed Laszlo with a sharpened spork?”

“You still want us to think Jervis did that?” Jonathan drawled.

“Well he did have the spork in his pocket.” Joker let out an exaggerated gasp. “Wait! Are you trying to imply that he was framed, Spooky? By who?”

“No one’s implying anything Joker.” Personally, Arkham agreed that Jervis didn’t do it, but he didn’t care enough to get the little bastard out of solitary. “Let’s move on. I’d like everyone here to say something positive about someone. Joker, we’ll start with you. Say something positive and keep it appropriate please.”

Joker grinned. “I know something positive! I found out that if you hit Robin in the spleen with a crowbar, he squeaks like a dog’s chew toy!”

Arkham wiped a hand down his face and willed himself not to cry. “I said to keep it appropriate, Joker.” A loud laugh was his only response. Arkham squeezed his eyes shut, internally counted to ten, then turned his gaze to Waylon. “Would you like to say something positive, Waylon?”

Waylon rubbed his chin with a scaly hand. “It can’t be about eating people?”

Arkham resisted the urge to throw his writing pad at Waylon’s face. He had a shock collar on and there were armed guards just outside, but why risk it? “No Waylon, it can’t be about eating people.”

Waylon nodded. “Ok. I have something positive to say about Jervis.”

Jonathan raised an eyebrow. “Really?”

“Yeah. I’m happy that he’s in solitary and I don’t have to listen to him whine about Alice!”

Joker cackled again, as did Edward, Pamela, and even Arnold. Arkham took a deep breath. “Fine, Waylon. That’s nice. That’s very nice. Now, does anyone else have anything positive they want to say?” Edward’s hand shot up. “For the love of God, anyone other than Edward?”

Joker clicked his tongue. “Uh, uh, uh, Dr. Arkham. Remember, positivity!”

Arkham was positively sure he was about to storm out of the room, call Belle Reve and have every single one of these degenerates join Harley down south. “Fine. Ok. What do you have to say, Edward?”

Edward lowered his hand and smiled. “I’d just like to say that I really do appreciate my time in Arkham. Whenever I’m here and interact with you all, I’m reassured that I am indeed, the most brilliant criminal mind in all of Gotham.”

Harvey jumped up and threw his chair at Edward, who yelped and jumped into Jonathan’s lap to avoid it. Waylon caught the chair and threw it back, sending it flying over Harvey’s head. It hit the wall with a crash. Joker threw his head back and laughed.

“Get off me!” Jonathan shouted, shoving Edward to the floor.

“Asshole!” Edward shouted back.

“Narcissistic megalomaniac!”

“Inbred hick!”

“High school dropout!”

Edward gasped. “Jon! You promised never to tell anyone about that!”

Pamela laughed. “All that talk about being a genius, and you couldn’t even finish high school? Pathetic.”

Arkham agreed, but he needed to at least attempt to get things under control, or else the guards would come in and…actually, wait. Fuck these people. The guards could brutalize them as much as they wanted. Edward was up on his feet now and screaming in Jonathan’s face, and Jonathan was screaming right back. Waylon, Harvey, Pamela, and Joker seemed content to watch the show, Joker chiming in with his own commentary. Arnold just kept nervously watching the door.

Dr. Arkham really, really hated his job.
