"tbf most harugoha songs are so #yuri but this one has an actual kiss. royalty x maid childhood friends who have drifted apart over the years and the royal lady (unsure of her english title, in japanese shes just named daireijo) desperately wants to just Talk to her dearest maid dorothy again but can't get anywhere with it (hence the title). In the final chorus of the MV she has enough and kisses dorothy on the lips. They're referred to as "sisters" sometimes but this is a reference to the classic catholic school yuri trope where an older girl will take in a younger one as a "younger sister" and they have a sort of romantic friendship going on. They're like definitely not actually sisters it would make no sense. It's such a good song. the bass in it is really good. please listen to harumaki gohan"

1. Eritav (Homestuck)

OUGHHH where do i start with these 2. Ok so tavros is my fave troll so naturally during the period i was reading Homestuck a lot i stared having dreams about him. And for some reason one time Eridan was also there so i was intrigued and looked into their ship tag on AO3 and found the best fic ever with like the best characterization, writing etc... Before i literally didn't give 2 shits about eridan but it made me love his character as well. It's called "Black sails, Black romance" by mtjester and it's about Tavros and Eridan developing a kismesissitude(which is basically hate love, for those that don't read hs). The reason i put a pic of them down there as moirails is because i can honestly see them in any quadrant, despite them never talking in canon.

For moirallegiance, i feel like it would start out rocky but eventually develop into something better. Tavros would actually be allowed to speak his mind and develop more confidence since i dont think Eridan would shut him down constantly like Vriska, as Eridan is desperate for his quadrants to actually work. And Eridan would obviously benefit from having someone to keep his ass in line.

I can see them developing into matesprits later from that as well.

And as for kismesissitude, well it's already getting too long and i already gave a fic rec for it.

2. Toxic4Toxic/Socket/Rocket x Sinedd whatever they're called (Galactik football)

Must i say anything. They give each other undiscovered mental illnesses and are horrible for each other and i love that for them. Rocket is my favorite character and so his arc in season 2 was most interesting to me, which includes his relationship with Sinedd. I feel like they could have done more with them in s2, but i already made a post about that.

3. Hinadam (Super Danganronpa 2)

AHHHH THEM. Contender for fave rarepair of all time and fave Danganronpa ship overall. Best fics on ao3. 0 fandom toxicity surrounding them. Should be shipped more than k0mahina. Is more canon than k0mahina(I'm gonna get torn apart for this opinion but idc!!!)

like the entire freetime events with Gundham ends with him letting Hajime hold his hand, which he never let ANYONE do due to his touch aversion. He never develops a relationship this strong with anyone, not even Sonia who is his friend in the game. Hajime is the only person he feels safe and comfortable letting down his walls with due to Hajime's genuine effort to understand him better and be his friend. It's genuinely touching to me idkk i think i cried a bit first time i saw it. I'm not going to go into spoilers but good god man...the chapter ....if you know you know

and also in the island mode ending, Gundham asks Hajime if he wants to live a quiet life with himself and his animals. How is this not shipped more they're literally so in love it's not even funny

And NO i do not ship it because gundham is the best character and Hajime is the character i relate to most. but that could be part of it

34. What’s their room look like right now?

Soleil: sol was homeless for a long time, and she gets a home around the time she finds out more about her past (the shining blade feels like maybe a hero like her should have the opportunity to, you know, have a home.) her room is quite empty though, she stores a few weapons in there but that's about it. it kind of just feels like a hotel room shes staying in for a night or so so she doesnt bother making it seem comfortable.

Ayriel: the place he lives at in the grove is probably decorated with little trinkets and magical stuff he needs for studies... he lives in the grove for quite the long time and always brings things back there from his adventures, often to show other sylvari! and no matter how old he gets and where he lives, his space will always be a bit cluttered :)

48. What was their lowest point? What was their highest point?

Soleil: i think most of her low points where her childhood when she was just a kid trying to get by, being treated like shit by everyone around her, even people she believed were friends. HoT will be another extreme low point, and as a human that avidly followed Balthazar, his appearance will probably wreck her the most. In turn, she's the one to actually kill him, which is probably gonna be the highest point: taking revenge.

Aryel: EASILY the death of trahearne. i dont think it can get any worse for him. i haven't decided on whether sol or ary die in PoF, but if soleil dies that'll be another low point. if i choose aryel to be killed then that'd be the lowest for soleil :D (they love eachother a lot). arys highest point is undecided- it'll probably have to do with either trahearne or soleil :)

52. How are you and your character the same? How are you different?

Soleil: she's kinda. not used to people being nice to her and when others treat her with kindness and love she's kinda ???!?!?!?!?! it always surprises her a lot! we're very similar in that way that we take very small kind actions to heart a lot :,) I think both of us also get attached to someone easily if they simply treat us properly :D otherwise, Sol is very different from me, she doesn't take any shit from anyone, she's very brave and very smart which isn't really like me

Aryel: homosexual...... just like me.......... uhmm i think ary underestimates himself a lot which i do too. ALSO!! he's a very shy and introverted person and struggles with communication on a personal level. social cues are a bit tricky for him, having an active conversation alone or even a group of people is very hard for him. HOWEVER people that havent talked to him one on one and only know him as a commander or leader would say that he is very good at expressing himself and acting as a mediator. him and me both are kind of socially incompetent but if we have to, acting as a speaker or a voice of reason (or the only mature person in a petty argument) is kind of our thing and we can both articulate our opinions or arguments well in a setting that isn't as casual. :)

✩ "The little Prince" it's a book that makes you realize that even the most simple things in life, are beautiful and unic. it's a book about growing up, childhood, dreams, and stars. it's the story of a boy who fell in love with life over and over again.

✩ "Coraline" is really good and beautiful. I end up crying at least a bit every time. maybe is a little weird but really beautiful.

✩ If you like a bit of romance, a bit of mythology, war, and tears, i adore "The song of Achilles" there were two boys who raced each other to the sunrise. Say that one went too far, and the other went with him.(one of my favourite books ever).

✩ if you like Harry Potter and reading fanfic you need to read "All the Young Dudes" in ao3. Realyyyyy good. it's about the marauders.

✩ "If not, winter" it's just lesbian poetry from ancient greece. I loved it, but poetry hits different for each person so maybe you dont like it.

Who was your first real crush?: i had a crush on this boy named Lucas and I think also this guy named Christian?? when i was in like, 1st grade. i moved before i started 2nd grade so i dont really remember them and i didnt know them as i grew up. next real crush was also a guy named christian, after i moved to the city i still live in. i was like, OBSESSED with this dude. we had that little childhood romance where we were 'dating' and would hang out on the playground, and when he suddenly broke up with me i was devastated.

something the latest chapter of kaguya-sama made me realize is just how much better all of the characters are doing in their lives now because of their friendships with each other, and i just think thats so sweet.

kaguya herself used to be absolutely miserable and never smile, but then chika made her be her friend and miyuki made her join the student council and over time she became so much more open and happy, you really see just how important all her friends are to her when she’s afraid that she might lose all the pictures of them she’s taken, they absolutely melted this former ice queen’s heart. through the series she gets more and more warm and acts more like a typical happy girl. the ending song for the second season also makes it really obvious that she sees her friends as her happy place, an escape from her terrible home life, she really does love them so much. in the latest chapter she makes it so clear that her friendship with chika is just as important to her as her relationship with miyuki, and that the only reason she didn’t tell her was that she was afraid chika would be mad that she has a new special person in her life, but because chika loves her friend so much she’s nothing but happy to see her finally have more special people in her life too.

and miyuki of course has gotten a lot better when it comes to accepting his flaws and not seeing himself as a failure, he only ever initially drops this facade around chika who becomes sort of like, a mom friend to him, and since a lot of his issues stem from his mom abandoning him its really important for him to see that not everyone will. and later on its much more directly addressed between him and kaguya he becomes much more able to be happy with who he is and not push himself so much or be afraid that people will leave him for not being perfect. not to mention his friendship with ishigami who he actually confides a lot of his issues in, despite the fact that he gets his relationship advice from manga, but the scene of them laying down under the tree and just talking, while very funny, is still a really sweet moment. his relationship with kei is also very big, because thats his sister, but he also sort of fills the role their mother usually would have for her. and though she’s annoyed by it, its really important for her because its implied that when she was with her mom she wasnt exactly treated well, she ran away to be with her father and brother for a reason, and kaguya was the one that actually gave her the strength to do so so it all comes back full circle. 

but chika has her own issues too, she seems like a very simple character, a typical genki girl. but she was a musical prodigy as a child, winning award after award. and yet she was so unhappy with that very ridged life, she had no freedom and all she did was practice. you can see it in her eyes in the flashbacks, despite the praise and trophies her eyes were were so dead and she was so different from the happy carefree chika we know. but then kaguya sort of became the straw that broke the camel’s back that forced her to quit, and it wasnt really out of kindness at first, but their friendship ultimately is what made her become the chika we know, the one who loves to laugh and play, its like she’s making up for lost time and finally getting to be a kid with all her friends. she is very much the gifted child who lost her childhood because of it, but she’s so much happier now. not to mention her friendship with the table-top board game club! its not given as much focus but you can really see her thrive in something she’s truly passionate in now, she loves making games and playing them with her friends!

ishigami’s whole thing can be pretty heavy, its played off as a joke at first but he legitimately is explicitly suicidal, but hes able to get better with the power of friendship. miyuki was very literally portrayed as a light coming into his life when he first enters his room to save him from his isolation. even before that though, miko also helped him, even if he didnt realize it, she was the one that advocated for him not to be held back a year which prompted the student council to look into his case and help him too. he has to get over a lot of his anxieties, at first he’s even afraid of kaguya, but he warms up to her over time too and they develop a pretty sweet relationship with her as his sort of tutor. and very critically, he joins the cheer squad. he actually put himself out there and made “normie” friends and it turns out it wasnt so scary after all. and his crush on tsubame is so important, because she rejects him, but they stay friends. he never once feels like she owes him anything or “friendzoned” him, even if it hurt to be rejected he wanted to be friends. she was really afraid of losing her friend that she loves so much, those feelings of platonic love arent in any way seen as lesser. and she helps him in the end by making sure the school knows that hes actually a nice guy and that means the world to him. theyre still friends and that relationship is important to both of them.

similarly though, ishigami also helped miko before they were even friends without her realizing it. he saw how much she was struggling with the constant bullying and decided to leave her a note to tell her that it gets better, and it was an incredibly important thing that stuck with her for a long time. their entire relationship is defined as “two people who secretly help each other” because theyre both hold such high personal morals that they dont expect good deeds to have to be pointed out or repaid. and then when she ran in the election, miyuki helped her get over her stage fright so people wouldn’t make fun of her anymore, and because he’s such a nice guy he even offered her a seat in the student council where she’d make a bunch of new friends, and despite going through sort of a rough patch she’s still ultimately far more confident than she’s ever been and she’s absolutely ready to become the president next year now, finally achieving her goal. and her relationship with miyuki becomes very sweet as they develop their relationship in the “senpai-kun and kohai-chan” chapters where they just bond as friends, often through her weird emo poetry but he supports her despite being terrified of it. 

hayasaka is one of the most loaded characters in the series despite not being in the student council. the arc that focuses around her is even titled “ai hayasaka’s friends” because they’re what help her out of her situation. since she was a child she was used as a pawn by the shinomiya family, not unlike kaguya herself, and she considers kaguya to be like her precious little sister. but she’s also been manipulated into betraying kaguya by becoming a spy for her abusive family. and the amount of guilt she feels over it is so painful to watch, but she’s too afraid to do anything about it. when kaguya finally finds out, she’s not instantly forgiven, but for the first time in kaguya’s life she wants to forgive someone who betrayed her, and they talk it out, and they can finally become proper friends just like they always both dreamed of. her friendship with miyuki is interesting too, because they have a clash of ideals about not letting your “true self” be seen by people, because they wont love you anymore, and despite miyuki arguing against it, it very much is an idelogy he shared at the time. but when she finally does show her true self she’s loved, and in the valentines chapter she confesses to him, not out of love, but out of friendship. she asks him to be her friend, and her circle of friends just grows from there with all her facaudes dropped.

all of their arcs just play into the greater overall theme of the series, which just comes down to honesty and vulnerability with the people youre close to, the series may be a romance but it places such important emphasis on all its characters relationships and how they can make each other better, its so nice. theyre just friends and they care each other.

He was nervous.

His doorbell rang.

He dashed out of his seat.

He paused in front of the door, making the other wait.

He didn’t want to seem too desperate.

He reached out and opened the door.

“Mingi!”

Yunho’s smile was bright enough that Mingi was half convinced any spectators would see his face lit up like he was burning under a spotlight.

“Yunho!”

Yunho walked into Mingi’s apartment, brushing right past him to cuddle the cats.

“Who are my beautiful babies? Hi lovies! Oh, you guys got even more adorable!”

Mingi couldn’t help rolling his eyes.

“Uh, I seem to remember that these cats are mine?”

Yunho looked over his shoulder. He gave Mingi the stink eye then just turned back to lavishing the cats with his affection.

“Traitors,” Mingi muttered as his stupid cats went back to nuzzling against Yunho’s hands.

Yunho just smirked, that bitch.

“Don’t get too smug, they’re just attention whores.”

Yunho raised his eyebrows.

“Maybe they just don’t get enough affection from their owner, huh?”

Mingi scoffed.

“That’s cheap. You know I love these two lil monsters.”

Mingi smiled affectionately at the cats.

They simply stared back.

“Hm.”

“Shut up, Yunho. You weren’t invited here to watch my cats crush my heart under their cute furry paws, okay?”

“Then we should do what I actually came here for, yeah?” Yunho lifted himself up from the floor with a grandpa-esque groan.

“What are you, eighty? Jeez.”

Mingi hauled himself off of the floor with comparative ease. He smirked triumphantly at Yunho. “See, I’m not-“ He straightened up fully, and his knee popped loudly.

“Fuck.”

Yunho burst into raucous laughter.

“Welcome to the senior citizens club.”

Mingi rolled his eyes again.

“Your eyes are gonna fall out soon if you keep rolling them like that.”

Mingi rolled his eyes yet again and scoffed loudly.

“Bullshit.”

“My mom told me that!,” Yunho protested.

Mingi smiled. “Let me guess, you rolled your eyes too much as a teenager and she tried to scare you to make you stop.”

Yunho gaped at him. “No. No, fuck you, my mom wouldn’t do that! No. She wouldn’t…?”

He trailed off, realization sinking in.

“See?”

He shook his head vehemently.

“Stop ruining my childhood, let’s just watch the goddamn movie.”

They ended up watching The Aristocats after much deliberation, because if there was one thing they could both agree on, it was cats.

There was one thing that they had both forgotten to tell each other that quickly became revealed within the first minutes of plot development.

They cried like babies at the slightest hint of emotion.

As the butler threw the poor cats out into the snow, Mingi buried his damp face into Yunho’s shoulder.

The soft sweater smelled like him, like lavender and warmth and cinnamon with the slightest hint of the familiar musk of cats.

He smelled like familiarity and something new, all at once.

Mingi felt a bit dizzy, but he couldn’t bear to tear himself away from Yunho’s warmth.

He felt Yunho start to lean toward him, and he panicked.

Is he going to push me off? Is he going to kiss my head? Is he gonna leave? Is he gonna let me lie down in his lap?

He felt Yunho’s breath brush across his head, and he resisted the urge to flinch.

“Are you crying? Fucking loser.”

Mingi lifted his head up to glare at Yunho better.

“Wait, you fucking ass, you’re crying too!”

Yunho huffed out a laugh, aggressively dragging a sweater paw across his eyes.

Stop being so cute and annoying at the same time, fucking asshole.

He turned back to Mingi, eyes sparkling.

“I guess I can’t talk then, huh?”

He reached out a hand drowning in blue knit, out towards Mingi’s still-teary face.

The material was slightly scratchy against his face, but the affection in Yunho’s eyes was more than enough to make up for it.

When did he start looking at me like that? And why does it seem more than just platonic?

Yunho gave him a fond smile.

“You look cute when you’re confused. Come on, let’s watch the movie.”

Yunho turned back to the screen, but Mingi’s eyes refused to leave the silhouette of the other.

What do you want from me? Mingi wondered as Yunho laughed at something on the screen, his nose scrunching up in the kind of way that makes anyone look positively adorable.

And Jeong Yunho wasn’t just anyone.

Mingi woke up to a soft sweater, fingers petting his hair, and a wicked crick in his neck.

“Ow,” he rasped.

The fingers flew out of his hair.

He vaguely registered his reluctance to let them go.

“You’re awake.”

Mingi turned his half-lidded, sleepy eyes on Yunho.

“No shit, Sherlock,” he yawned.

The apartment seemed darker; it was pitch-black outside.

“Hold on, how long was I asleep? How did it get so dark?”

“You were asleep for… maybe two, three hours? You looked really tired, I didn’t want to wake you...”

Mingi squinted up at Yunho.

“You let me sleep on you for two or three hours? Holy- are all of your limbs asleep or something?”

Yunho shrugged.

“Just a little bit.”

“Can you move?”

“Just a little bit.”

“Why do you keep saying that? Are you broken?”

A mischievous smile crept onto Yunho’s face.

“Just a little bit.”

Mingi smacked his shoulder lightly.

“Shut up, you dummy.”

They began meeting once a week at Mingi’s apartment.

Mingi would clean up, and make sure he had a good selection of movies available, along with fluffy blankets.

Yunho would bring a large spread of snacks, and occasionally small treats for the cats.

Ever since the first time Mingi fell asleep on Yunho, they had become more comfortable with each other.

The second week, they were only a few inches apart on the couch, dangerously close to touching.

The week after that, they found themselves with their thighs pressed together side by side on the couch.

The next week, Mingi found his head on Yunho’s shoulder again, and Yunho’s arm snaked around his shoulders.

The next week, Yunho’s arm dipped down to circle his waist.

The next week, Mingi’s head was in Yunho’s lap.

The next week, they turned sideways on the couch, with Yunho half-spooning Mingi.

The next week, Mingi fell asleep with his head tucked in the crook of Yunho’s neck.

The week after that, Mingi could swear he felt Yunho press a kiss to the top of his head as he slipped into sleep.

“Yeosang, it’s killing me! He acts all platonic and ‘bestie vibes only’ and whatever half the time, but the other half of the time, he’s kissing my head and spooning me and hugging me and being nice to my cats! It’s like he’s unintentionally doing everything to make me fall in love with him!”

Yeosang, who had definitely been listening to everything Mingi was saying instead of staring longingly at the coffee in his hands, suddenly snapped back into the conversation.

“Love?,” he sputtered. “Remind me how long you’ve known this dude again?”

Mingi averted his eyes.

“Um. Two months.”

Yeosang stared at him again, but for a different reason.

“Two months.”

Mingi nodded sheepishly.

“And you still haven’t made a move.”

Mingi’s shoes seemed super enthralling at the moment.

“Well.”

Yeosang cursed under his breath, muttering something about stupid idiots not realizing that all of the solutions to their problems are right under their stupid idiot noses.

“Dude.”

Mingi whined and complained in a mutter-y, unintelligible voice.

Yeosang just gave him a look.

“If what I’ve heard about this guy is anything to go by, I think you should ask him out.”

Mingi bit his lip, quieting down immediately.

“What if he says no? What if he rejects me, and I ruin everything?”

Mingi could picture it already, the fragile silky fabric of their relationship tearing into millions of luxurious threads before his eyes.

He pictured the threads circling around his throat, cutting off his air.

He’s my best friend, Mingi wanted to say.

He’s my favorite person, Mingi wanted to say.

He didn’t say either of those things.

Instead, all he said was, “Do you think there’s a chance he’d say yes?”

“Yeah,” Yeosang said, looking at him like he could see right through him to the barest parts of his soul. “I think he’d be stupid not to.”

a very late mid year book tag!!

1. How many books have you read so far?

I didn’t get goodreads until around April, so since then 20 books!

2. What genres have you read?

Mainly romance and crime, but now I’m spreading out to Greek Mythology and fantasy 

3. Best book you’ve read so far in 2020

Definitely ‘The song of Achilles’ by Madeline Miller, it took me at least a whole month to get over it and I still dont think I have gotten over it.

4. Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2021

I don’t really read series books that often, but I really liked ‘One of us is next’ which is the sequel to ‘One of us is lying’ by Karen K. McManus

5. New release you haven’t read yet, but want to

‘The lost apothecary’ I’ve seen so many good reviews on this book but I have yet to find a book store near me that sells it, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed!

6. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year

I don’t really know any upcoming releases because I have been so focused on by TBR ahaha

7. Biggest disappointment

I think ‘The invisible life of Addie LaRue’ it was such a big hype up on Booktok, I got so excited to read it, I even got the special edition book, but in the end, it just dragged on and I only gave it 3 stars. 

8. Biggest surprise

‘Caraval’ had a lot of twists and turns in, there seemed to be a plot twist every other chapter, most of them I guessed but a few really shocked me!

9. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)

Madeline Miller (Author of ‘The song of Achilles) and Paula Hawkins (Author of ‘Girl on the train’ and ‘Into the water’)

10. Underrated gems

Definitely books by Paula Hawkins, I don’t see many people talking about ‘Girl on the train’ and I definitely do not see anyone talking about ‘Into the water’. These mystery books were so good and helped me get back into reading. 

11. Newest fictional crush

I don’t really have like a crush on characters that go on outside of the book, once I finished. It’s more crush on their interactions and personalities and relationships in the book but never as an individual?? Or maybe I just can’t choose?

Chaol Westfall from ‘Throne of Glass’ by Sarah J. Maas, I was rooting for him for the whole book.

Mouth Dreams analysis

MOUTH DREAMS

I dont even need to introduce to you the marvelous mash up works of neil cicierega’s mouth trilogy (now quadrilogy i guess). We all know them, we all love them and we all have our own interpretations of what they mean. For some merely musical shitposting, for others clever experimentation laden with phrases, leivmotifs and themes repeating here and there, and for many a deep and rich bounty of lore, hidden messages, subtextual stories and underlying narratives implied across multiple variations of all star, hidden in the meta data and uncovered only after doing spectrographic analysis on the soundwaves of the songs after being played at x0.000003 times the speed. It is usually understood that all the albums together form a unique and rich tapestry, a coherent whole that can be understood in its totality. Im not here to do that.

I came up with my own interpretation of what Mouth Dreams can be read as, independent from the other albums. Think of it as me presenting this entry as the soundtrack of a musical with its own self contained story. It is the interpretation that i chose to go by and i hope its understood the brilliance of these albums lies on how weird and vague and open ended they are such that any number of different readings can be extracted from them. So lets see the one i extracted, without further ado, lets begin.

Yahoo

It is an out of context, in media res, start for the whole story. We hear a voice, echoing in the void, yelling at the top of its lungs, reaching desperately for human conection. One form of looking at this song is that the voice only receives an empty response from its own echoes, but i dont take it like that. The song is too sublime and too beautiful for these, the notes soaring too high, the desperate plead is being answered. Someone is listening to the plead and answering right back, harmonizing.

This whole album is in a way that howl, reaching to others, and we the audience are answering back, listening. But also on another level, this whole album is the protagonist telling the tragic story of his own life to some sympathetic figure who wants to help, perhaps a therapist, perhaps a friend, perhaps a partner, we’ll see. And as the yelling subsides the story starts proper.

Mouth dreams (intro)

We are being slowly taken into the story, entering the psyche of the main character, entering their subconscious, their dreams, their memories and therefore, their past. We’ll see what life they led and how they ended up where they are now and we start right at his infancy with….

Spongerock

Spongebob is a great indicator that we are seeing this person’s early childhood. They seem to be a rambunctious and energetic child. Cheerful and enthusiastic, yet there seems to be some underlying aggression there. The music is a bit to strong, and in comes freddy mercury berating the poor kid “you’ve got mud on your face, you big disgrace”. Who is this entity being so hostile to a poor kid? What lies beneath that image of a happy kid? We are about to see on the next song.

Just a baby

This is where trouble starts. We are treated to a dramatic song about a poor young baby who seems to be having a pretty sad life. Justin bieber, former teen idol, keeps lamenting about the poor baby being stuck in baby jail. This song is very much about loss of innocence. A shadowy figure of the mother is introduced who tells the protagonist to be a good boy. And almost at the end of the song we get a suggestion of what’s so wrong on this poor kid’s life. His mother apparently “shot a man in reno”. We dont know if this is a literal thing the mother did or if this is a metaphor for the mother doing something horrible, commiting some crime, harming someone in some way. While its not clarified we see strong hints of what the mother could have done in the next song

Superkiller

As we worry what may be so wrong with this kid’s mother we come across the title for this song, ominous. Now in the original Psycho killer the killer was clearly the singer, but in here the song is twisted and turned a bit, recontextualized by the beats of “cant touch this”. It seems like this time is the singer the one who doesnt want to be touched by some nefarious figure (the mother? Is the mother a psycho killer?) maybe the kid saw the mother killing people “i dont like people when they’re on fire”. whatever the case might be the kid is clearly strung up and under a lot of stress and we are introduced to the first hint of the insomnia that will plague this persons life who cant sleep because “my bed’s on fire”. The horrible situation in which this kid is living is taking a severe toll on their mental health. How is he going to cope with this?

Get happy

I think everyone can agree that “come on get happy” is incredibly unnerving when mindlessly repeated over and over. A first read might suggest the kid is forced to put on a happy face, to pretend that there is nothing wrong going on with their life. But as the song progresses it could also be interpreted as the kid being tempted to find refuge from the horror by unsavory methods “get happy” as in acquire happiness of a forced and artificial kind, perhaps drugs. But also “we’ll make you happy”. The kid is not running into a rabbit hole on their own, they are being invited. Its possible that the kid is being seduced by a bad crowd to move into seedy circles as an escape from their life.

Ribs

In here we see the kid, probably a young teenager by this point as suggested by the use of marylin manson in this song, falling deep into debauchery. The specific kind is not needed to know, it could be drugs, it could be sexual experimentation, it could be criminality. Point is this is unhealthy and dangerous and depraved, emphasized by the title of the song “ribs” as a reference to the rumor that marilyn manson removed two of his ribs in order to perform autofellatio. Whatever the case it clearly works, the song is actually a great bop, energetic and upbeat, the kid is content with the situation, at least for a while…

My mouth

This song is the coming down from the high. In here we see at full blast how the life of depravity on the one side and their situation at home on the other have turned the character into a hardcore insomniac, their health is severy compromised “My eyes feel like they're gonna bleed

Dried up and bulging out my skull”. Another way to read this song is as we momentarily cutting back to the present. After all, what we have been seeing until now has been dreams/memories and this is a short look at the wreck that the person is as a grown up, stirring awake from their memories and trying desperately to forget or to go back to sleep where they can have a reprieve. As evidenced by the next song

Aerolong

I dont wanna miss a thing is completely turned on its head. As the lyrics clearly demonstrate is the protagonist who cant go to sleep being chased by their memories, specifically the memories of their mother “I don't miss you, babe, and I do want to miss a thing”. As the person is tossing and turning on their bed, unable to sleep they talk about how they dont miss their mother at all and they want to “miss” her as in they want to forget her.

Sleepin’

The character is constantly speaking about how they are “sleeping with their clothes on” this is due to them falling asleep during their everyday life because of their lack of sleep every night, this person is barely functional, their sleep schedule is broken. Also since this song is about the character actually sleeping it also works as a bridge back into their dreams and so into their past.

Aammoorree

Is another vignette about the character sinking into disreputable states in order to escape their shitty situation as a teenager, this time very specifically about being completely drunk and perhaps experiencing romance for the first time. The character is probably at a club or a party, drunkenly hitting on someone, though chances are without much success as the song becomes increasingly more incoherent and we go into a full black out. This gets bad enough that the person finally has to take a look and….

Where is my mom

….stop. It is highly suggestive that in the album the “stop” is part of this song rather than the last one. The person is not only stopping their current alcoholic binge. They are stopping the entire situation and taking a good look at their life, finally confronting face to face what is happening and why it is so wrong. Now “stacy’s mom” was always kind of an inappropriate song due to it being about a child having a crush on their friend’s mom, as sung by an adult. But as it is recontextualized by the instruments of “where is my mind” it takes on a much darker tone. The romantic words are still there but now with a sinister bent. This time the main character asks their friend if they can go and take refuge at their house and when they ask if the mom is going to be there they sound more scared than eager, specially suggested by the way he seems to be stammering the word “pool”, they are nervous and terrified. They also talk about stacy’s mom as “all they want and been waiting for so long”, probably because all they want is a normal, loving mother. Presumably this song is about the main character finally talking about what is going on at his house with a friend, confessing and that confession gives way to realization

Fredhammer

Then realization gives way to anger. During this whole song we see the teenage character finally grasping how fucked up the whole situation is and he gets progressively more worked up with each successive aggravation “Why did it take so long? Why (hoo!), did I wait so long, huh?

Why??? To figure it out, but I did it (huh?)”. From this we transition to the kid actually confronting their mom face to face. The line “So you can take that cookie And stick it up your (yeah!)” can be read as the mother trying to pretend there is nothing wrong or pacifying the kid with empty gestures of motherhood, by making cookies and the kid spitting that back into their face. The kid gets more and more worked up through the song as we seamlessly transition to the next one.

Limp Wicket

This song is pure incoherent chaos but something very important can be rescued out of the chaos. This song uses the lyrics from the “ewok celebration” which is presumably the song the ewoks sing in return of the jedi after the empire was defeated. So in a way is the kid celebrating that he finally confronted their mother and presumably defeated her. This is emphazised by the recurrence of the lyrics ““So you can take that cookie”. Is not specified how the mother is defeated, maybe social services or the police get involved, maybe the kid runs away, either way this song is triumphant. The evil entity that stole his childhood and innocence has been defeated.

Cannibals

This song is slightly different from the rest. It works as a form of victory lap after the defeat of the mother figure, but also as an intermission since it lies smack dab in the middle of the album, and finally as a transitionary song from childhood to adulthood. Is a time skip, we get to see the person grow up in fast forward as the THX song hits its crescendo. This song also makes it perfectly clear that, even though she was left behind, the mental scars that the mother left are still there and still fresh and still very much stopping them from sleeping “She drives me crazy

And I can't help myself”. 

The outsiders

This works as a way to recontextualize us in the life of the character as an adult. Our so called “feature presentation”. It is not altogether clear who these people being introduced are. They could be the people who came to mean something in this persons life as they grew up after trauma, probably multiple foster homes, social workers, friends, bosses, co workers, etc. the fact that they are being enumerated dissapasionatly could indicate how most of his social relationships were basically a meaningless blur for him who grew up socially distant due to trauma. It could also represent the multiple roles that our character was forced to take as they grew up and the multiple things that went through his mind or meant something. There is clearly some desperate attempts to recapture their lost childhood as figures such as “inspector gadget” or “the ninja turtles part three” are named. The song is a fast montage of views and places. That prepares us for the next song.

Johnny

We finally zoom in and take a good look at our main character as an adult. A sad, pathetic figure, hurt and lonely, possibly not very well liked and certainly not respected as we hear boos all around. Despite all this the character is clearly committing themselves to be a good person, to not hurt others like he was hurt and specifically to not commit the same crimes that their mother commited.

Closerflies & Nightmovin

These two songs might as well work as a single piece since they are both more or less about the same thing. We reiterate how this person has been turned into an insomniac due to the trauma that they experienced as a child “When I'm far too tired to fall asleep”. They are delirious and barely coherent, possibly hallucinating as they think about their life in bed. This is clearly hell on earth and it seems like its just never going to stop “Can't wake up in a sweat

'Cause it ain't over yet” but, with neil’s classic sense of humor, the song immediately ends.

Now that could just be for the sake of irony but there is also another level in which it could be read. This suffering stops because something suddenly changes in this person’s life. What could that be?

Whitehouse

“I fell in love with a girl”

As the lyrics say, the main character met someone special and they are deeply in love. But also, because of the past that weighs heavily on him, he is very trepidatious about wether to go on with the relationship or not. He knows he is damaged goods and he doesnt want to drag her down as well, these fears make it so he never fully opens up to her about his issues “She turns and says, "Are you alright?" I said, "I must be fine because my heart's still beating." 

Wah

The use of “war” by edwin starr is a clever reference about how everything is fair in love and war. Now this song is an important departure since it is sung from the point of view of the girl our main character fell in love with. She is a feisty woman who is very clearly trying to establish the terms of the relationship and demanding her partner to open up which the main character, due to his insecurities, takes as a declaration of war and which he deflects by playing dumb, hence the repeated use of the silly “WAH” by wario. 

Pee Wee Inc

The emotional distance from the man is putting a strain in the relationship, so what once was supposed to “feel good” is now this melancholic and unbearable situation. Is no mistake that the song sampled here is “the breakfast machine” from pee wee’s big adventure. After all  a neglected partner can feel like a breakfast machine, an object that is there just to make your breakfast. On top of this you can see that the insomnia hasnt gone away “My dreams, they got a kissing 'cause I don't get to sleep, no”. In a lot of ways the girlfriend is feeling used as just a relief from the man’s suffering but not as someone who is being truly loved.

1000 spoons

We go back to the woman’s perspective. At first it just seems like a simple melancholic situation where she is sad the relationship is not working, but then we see the woman have a full mental breakdown as the song changes and becomes much more deranged and we get to see what is really happening. The man ran away on their wedding day. This is represented by the lyrics “is like rain on your wedding day” because it means the wedding has been ruined. She is heartbroken by this.

Mouth dreams (extro)

Appropriately as the previous song talked about a wedding being ruined by “rain” this song begins with the sound of rain. This is the big emotional climax of the story, the music at its most dramatic. Now i will admit, even for me this is a stretch, im willing to concede most of what i am about to say is essentially built out of whole cloth and me wanting to fit a neat full narrative into this album where there is none, but hey, what is art for?

Essentially the man is about to commit suicide, possibly by jumping off a bridge in the rain as suggested by the song being sampled “drowning”. The fact that this song is named after the album is a way to signify how everything that we have just seen weighs heavily on the man’s heart, his whole life, his memories, his trauma, and he is finally ready to end it all. He jumps.

But at the last second his wife jumps after him and drags him to the shore, the last we see is her trying to perform mouth to mouth resuscitation, as indicated by the song,”love me mouth to mouth now…” he is unconscious and presumably finally sleeping peacefully (maybe dead?) “...cover me with dreams, yeah”.

It might look like he will not survive, as implied by the sinister version of all star encroaching over the song. But as it looks like all hope is lost he finally WAKES UP.

In a way this song is also when we finally catch up with the start of the album where we saw the man desperately hollering for human contact and merely echos responding, except now someone finally answered, and he is finally ready to open up and share his story.

Brithoven

Even though this song is sung by a single person i choose to take it as a dialog between the couple, both of them sharing their regrets about their relationship with each other, her recriminating the fact that she couldnt have known what he was going through “oh baby bay, how was i supposed to know, that something wasnt right here” and him finally admitting that he needs help “My loneliness is killing me”.

Finally they both agree to try it again and give their relationship a second chance “hit me baby one more time”

Ain’t

Part of me is conflicted about this song, i kind of want to disregard it, mainly because i think its kind of a weird way to end an album and also because i just dont feel is a very good mashup really. The lyrics dont mix that well with the song, they are paced in an inconsistent way and overall feel like they never truly click. On top of that it just doesnt fit at all with the narrative that i have been building during this analysis.

There is talk about alcoholism and parent abandoment, this time by the father, a figure that was never mentioned during the album. The last line says “say it aint so” which doesnt particularly seem to reflect on any of the themes i’ve been building upon. Ultimately i think i will just leave it besides and be content that i managed to fit almost all of the album into one story, this process was never meant to be a perfect dissection of the carefully planned story that neil deliberately crafted but rather me having fun seeing pictures in a rorshach test.

So anyway that was Mouth dreams, let me know what you thought.

im gonna try not to get too into it bc i will go on forever but two important things to mention as far as their childhood. the first, when koda was sixteen their parents went through a really fuckin rough divorce. and like any sixteen yr old whose parents are getting divorced it pissed koda off. they have a moderately better relationship with them now but at the time, it was messy. at first, koda was very outwardly emotional about it, but as their emotions were just used as a weapon for their parents to use against one another they shut that shit down immediately. only showed their emotions in a way that was more of a nuisance to their parents: graffiti, petty shoplifting, being a dickhead in school, flunking grades (though they werent great to begin with), sneaking out all the time, all that bs

which leads to thing two: koda was a dealer towards the end of high school/the start of young adulthood. nothing big, bc they were a dumbass teenager in a small town just looking to piss their parents off. but because they were a dumbass teenager in a small town i assume theres a good possibility that if ur character is from reed: koda was their dealer. eventually they stopped bc people figured out they were just a sometimes v annoying middle man for the much easier to deal with guy that koda bought from + too much work. like most things to koda, drugs were meant to be just a fun past time, not a full time career.

after barely finishing high school they had absolutely no want to go to college. even at local reed college it was a lot of money to put down and for what???? for koda to do an arts degree they dont really care about and then do nothing with it ????? instead they just worked more. they’ve had the job at salvatore’s since they were fifteen and its really a staple in their lives. 

when they are not at salvatore’s, they’re still being a menace tbh that did not end with high school or even the dealing. they’re usually skating around (would also be driving around and sometimes they are but its illegal because they recently had their licence suspended), probably spray painting some fence, maybe takin some photos on their barely working dslr, partying, drinking, stealing shopping carts from the local grocer, being a dickhead, u know the ~usual

despite being the local, so far they’ve not had any close connections to the parkway victims and thats unfortunately made them pretty insensitive about it. they’re far, far more interested in figuring out what the fuck is going on than they care about u know the loss of life and danger to everyone else in the town. in stats i mentioned they were an aspiring podcaster and thats because, u guessed it, koda wants to start a podcast about the murders they’re a piece of shit we already know this

I’d go to school and specialize in grief counseling and then make bank specializing in tomb robbers. Last would be Yuuri on Ice universe because then I could see the epic romance between the world’s top male figure skaters happen in real life.
