yea I speak it its my mother tongue I recommend learning the [russian script] cyrillic first and to learn how to read it fast before you do anything else. I feel like once you learned cyrillic its all 100x easier

I had a friend try to learn speaking and reading it witout learning the alphabet first and it barely worked. so Im saying it which I think is just basic knowledge but idk.

Id go with getting books for A1 level. and work yourself up to C2. also practice cyrillic every day cause you dont wanna like forget the differences between и й // ц ч // ш щ // ъ ы ь I dont trust duolingo but memrise seems good? THOUGH memrise literally teaches you to say закрой рот (shut the fuck up) so early on in the lessons it was the funniest thing I ever went through. dont say закрой рот

Everything I wish I could tell myself before starting my language “journey” lol:

🦩Dont be intimidated

Don’t be intimidated, specifically by doing listening or speaking practice. I know in the US (or for most English speakers), when we hear someone that speaks perfect English but merely has an accent we think “they don’t speak English”, but from experience this mentality is not shared with other languages. When you know even a little bit of a language or can’t speak it very well, natives speakers are really really encouraging. I think since we view not being 100% fluent without so much as an accent, as “not knowing any of a language” we are hard on ourselves and give up pretty easily.

🦩Listening practice is as important as studying vocabulary and grammar

When you listen to native speakers talk, you are training your ear even though you don’t understand it. Listen and listen, eventually your brain stops picking out English words that aren’t even there, but rather, starts to catch patterns in the language (for example, the same words sticks out to you over and over).

🦩Set realistic and doable goals or you’ll get discouraged and quit

If you are a busy person, make small goals to fit language study in. Don’t tell yourself that you need to master _____ within a week. Instead give yourself 15 mins of reading in the evening, and 25 mins of language listening in the morning. It’s also easier to add the language into stuff you do on a daily basis anyway. For example if you are religious, find your prayers you pray daily in the language you are learning.

🦩learn to read the language first (obviously this tip might not be applicable for character based languages like Chinese)

I know everyone says “immersion is the best and most important part of language” but honestly, a lot of our native speaking knowledge comes from our literacy education. When we are taught how to read, it’s through reading we can discover new words through context. It’s also easy to pick up new language reading since it’s available anywhere, where immersion is only available when you are surrounded by native speakers. The first thing I do is learn how to read and write the language, then the entire language becomes accessible to me.

🦩Spend time perfecting the sounds of the language that are most difficult for you

The vocal sounds of a language is the foundation of a language. I know we are all impatient and want to simply learn as many phrases as possible as fast as possible, but if you get down the unfamiliar sounds of a language that don’t exist in English, you’ll have a better foundation of the language and your speaking and listening will be better from the very beginning. So take the time to practice those weird sounds by looking into the position of the tongue and where the sound comes from, from the chest to the lips. Look into how tense the mouth is, how much air comes from the lips, what the sound is like next to other sounds. When you master this speaking becomes more instinctual and it’s easier to pick up the language.

🦩Search YouTube, google, Instagram IN THE LANGUAGE YOU ARE STUDYING.

Don’t search “korean music” or “korean kids tv” or even “korean vegetables” in google. Just translate how to say them in a translator app, then copy and paste them into the search bar. This way native korean information, videos, posts will come up. For example, if you’re in the mood for some horror comics, and want to read/watch them in the language you are learning, go to the translator app, and figure out how to say them, then search it. It works way better, even if the translation isn’t correct or more natural, you’ll still get the information, posts, and videos you want to see.

🦩Find ways to practice speaking the language (I use HiNative) and don’t be discouraged by corrections.

Getting corrected does not mean you’re wrong, corrections are the most useful part of learning a language. If you are the type of person who is sensitive to criticism, you need to remind yourself corrections are NOT criticism. They are NOT a reflection of your progress, they are NOT you failing! You will always be corrected as a language learner and the sooner you are gentle with yourself in learning the sooner you will learn more. Get those first corrections out of the way, allow yourself to butcher pronunciation, get corrected for the first 10 times, let it sting a little and move on. Eventually you will be begging native speakers to tell you every little detail in where you went wrong!

🦩Tv and Books seems to be more useful for immersion and listening practice then music does

So far in my experience music is its very weird and abstract, and the things said in music aren’t really useful in speaking? It’s good for gathering vocab, but if you want music listening practice that’s music based try searching for rap in that language, although obviously you’ll be picking up a lot of informal language in music/rap. Tv shows however are typically how people really do talk, so turn off English subs and just listen! Books are really useful for learning new vocabulary, but sometimes written language is different than spoken (often), although when you speak it the way you’ve learned from a book the worst you’ll sound is “formal and poetic”.

🦩Look up “insert language you are learning phrases and words that aren’t useful or correct”

There so many programs and books that teach you phrases you’ll never use or that are only appropriate in very specific situations. I don’t know why language programs do this, but learning which ones are weird or only in specific settings before you start learning really helps. Chinese Especially does this...like I learned so many phrases and words that natives will never use and have no purpose???

🦩Know the different subjects of learning a language and which apps to use for that

Everyone uses Duolingo, but this app alone won’t make you speak a language. Duolingo and Memrise are great for memorizing vocab, but, is it vocab that in the context of your reading and listening practice? Are you learning words you are hearing and reading all the time? Duolingo is a lot of fun but I feel like the vocab is so broad and it doesn’t go deep enough into the language. Feel free to use it at first to get used to the sounds of the language, but try using flash card apps like quizlet or Anki instead where you can write down and study words you are hearing constantly. Memrise does have actually study sets for many language books and lessons! So you can study words you are hearing in specific programs and books which is pretty useful in regards to vocab.

There obviously is more than just learning vocab. What about grammar, listening practice, speaking practice and reading? If you are wanting to use primarily apps find out which apps are available for your language. Here is an example of the apps I use for each subject. Be aware some languages are not available on them.

Vocab: quizlet, anki

Grammar: books (printed or kindle), YouTube grammar lessons, websites

Reading: books (printed or kindle), beelinguapp, instagram (posts that have text), Netflix/YouTube with both subtitles in the language you are learning and spoken in language you are learning, epic app

Writing: just use paper and pencil/pen

Listening: audio books (beelinguapp/epic/kindle/YouTube), tv and movies (Netflix/YouTube etc with no English subs), conversations on YouTube (search in language you are studying, don’t search “Spanish conversations” or “Japanese conversations”)

Speaking: HiNative (pretty much all I use since it’s all languages, quick, and you get immediately answered and corrected by native speakers), get friends in language you are learning through lots of apps

Translator: it’s really hard to find a good one, most of them are really weird so only use them for words and the most basic or simple phrases and sentences, otherwise use HiNative to ask native speakers directly, or ask people on the apps that connect you to native speakers

🌱I should note that for talking to native speakers I only like HiNative, since it’s built to NOT be a form of social networking at all. It’s not personal in anyway, and there’s no way to private message or speak to other users outside a asking questions publicly. The people on there are only about learning or teaching a language, not usually making friends. I’ve found the sites that are built to make native speaking friends aren’t useful to me personally, as most of the native speakers are either dudes looking for a woman to date or people wanting to only practice English with you, so they wasted a lot of my study time. People who are willing to help you learn are there, but it takes time to filter everything else out. If you would find it helpful to make friends by all means use them but I don’t really use it myself.🌱

You don’t want to really study EVERY SUBJECT every single day (unless you have the time). It can get really overwhelming, and you don’t really absorb information that if you are just cramming. While I would say it’s good to read and listen daily, spread subjects out over the week. Grammar on Monday and Friday, vocab on Tuesday and Thursday. Take one day to review all of what you’ve learned all week. Pick a day you have the largest block of free time. Bi-weekly works fine too.

🦩Write sentences daily of everything you’ve learned (no THIS I RECOMMEND DAILY)

Write as many as you can. Use all the grammar you’ve learned, the words you’ve learned, everything! Write them in your notes and submit them to be corrected in HiNative. The sentences they correct, put them in flash cards!

🦩It’s ok to abandon languages you aren’t passionate in

So you’ve learned to read the language, and you know basic phrases, and now you just don’t want to do it anymore. If you can’t think of any reason to maintain it and don’t know why you are studying it, learning some of the language is good! Fluency does NOT need to be everyone’s goal. You can hold a conversation, and that’s good enough for you. Feel free to try out various languages, there will be one or some that really are your passion, it’s fine to have the goal of fluency in those and conversational in others.

Don’t abandon languages however because you feel discouraged. Discouragement is just a bump to get over, when you train your brain to maintain study habits through the days you feel discouraged, you make it habitual. Habits are harder to break and abandon! Evaluate your reasonings for wanting to speak a language, and your reasons for abandoning them if you want. Don’t let difficulty, disorganized, discouragement, or poor time management get in your way!!

🦩With all that said it’s ok to take breaks

It’s ok to get overwhelmed and take breaks from language learning. If you can still maintain what you’ve learned by listening to music in your language or staying connected in some way that’s good, but the “you’ll loose a language” isn’t entirely true. I’ve taken year long breaks and refreshing what I learned previously is pretty easy! Your brain really does go “oh yeah I do remember this!” when you’re studying information you studied years ago.

🦩Be gentle with yourself

Be gentle with yourself. People that claim to be fluent in 6 months are selling something or want to be an influencer. Don’t compare yourself to them. Language learning even for natives is a lifetime education. It’s not something you do for 6 months then stop. It’s continual and that looks different for everyone (yes native speakers included). Don’t bother watching YouTube videos on how to learn in 10 mins or 3 months, you’ll only get discouraged about your own amazing progress and all the work you’ve done.

🦩Plan your “can you say something in it” phrase now

This one is just for fun but after hearing you are learning a language the first thing you’ll get asked is “oh cool you speak (insert target language here)? Can you say something in (insert target language here)?” It does not matter what level of fluency you are at, you will absolutely forget the entire language and your own native language when you are asked this because it sends your brain to another dimension. So think of some funny phrases to say to people who ask, master them, then when they ask what they mean you can have a laugh. Other wise you will say something stupid of jumbled words (my go to was ‘we women are fruit’ for some reason thanks brain you’re incredible) you’ve learned that don’t belong in a sentence, or even worse you’ll run a blank and you’ll just look at them like:

So think of inside jokes to tell your friends, funny phrases, even goofy insults! Memorize them and tell them at your friends and family to torture them because they can’t escape sound waves! It’s a good way to memorize the language but also to become confortable speaking it!

Hello Honey! I just wanted to ask you a little thing, if you don’t mind. I believe you know Latin, right? I remember you saying something along those lines. So the thing is, I took Latin class last year, and learned some basics. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to take it next year, but I also want to improve my Latin, I’m so interested in it because of the reasons you can easily guess😶, so would you have some suggestions as to how I can do that? Do you know some sites or YT channels etc. (anything would work tbh) through which I can learn it further?

i dont know any english resources to learn latin with, but i believe duolingo has a latin course? while i have my issues with duolingo, it's super useful for learning vocab!

i also found this channel on youtube for grammar but ive personally never used it so i cant confirm the quality ^^

the best practice for learning Latin is 100% just translating original texts though! you can find them online :) once you learn how to recognize verbs, different noun cases and sentence structures (Latin is pretty random with those, especially in more stylized texts the sentence structure is all over the place bc of ) you should be able to translate quite a bit! if you come across a structure you cant translate, just look it up and you'll know it for the next time you come across it ^^ Useful practice also includes taking a professional translation (you should be able to find those online!), putting the original Latin next to it and seeing why they choose to translate stuff a certain way.

if you can i would 100% recommend getting a latin-your language dictionary, a lot of dictionaries have grammar help + culture context in the back and different meanings for each word based on context. i got mine secondhand for i think 10 euros? this website is also helpful!

writers i personally have translated are:

- catullus (personal fave, he is super funny and wrote a lotttt of juicy poems about the affair he had with a woman of higher social status, he changed her name to 'lesbia' after the island sappho, who he was a fanboy of, lived on. he had to change her name because these poems were read out in public and they were quite graphic. i love this man, he is hilarious and has very clever metaphors for, well, his cock.)

- cicero (HARD. HE IS SO HARD TO TRANSLATE. he has sentences the length of six normal ones, but so worth it. his argumentation is genius and he is one of the founders of modern rhetoric.)

- ovid (metamorphosen, retelling of greek mythology stories rewritten for a roman public. very entertaining!)

- pliny (the younger) (wrote a lot of letters to his friends, including a few about the explosion of the vesuvius!)

- seneca (bleh :( not my fav)

- tacitus (wrote a bit on nero's whole arson thing, wasn't too hard if i remember correctly but it was pretty interesting)

- virgil (translated a bit of the aeneid, pretty cool)

i do have to note that classical and late Latin are different from the latin used in classical music (which is usually church latin), but honestly, i was able to sight-translate most of requiem during choir practice and i dont think other compositions are much harder lol

if you ever need help w basic grammar rules (i never really learned anything so i cant help much more than that, i usually just translate on intuition oops) or something or if you just want to chat about it lmk >:)

Thay covered Metallica’s For Whom The Bell Tolls and they did it so good! Secondly - The Heart Asks Pleasure First. They basically made their own song based on one of my favourite piano songs. Oh my.. it’s sooo good!

And still talking about music! I just wanted to say that I also love our Wombo edits! That one with Ezio singing Stressed out was perfect! Mr Auditore looked very believably singing it. I liked the one with Edward and Haytham. I don’t know the song but it had such a christmas vibe! It made me think of Edward and Shay singing Last Christmas or some other shitty Christmas song together. Why them? No idea. And! I just wanted to tell you that you inspired me to take japanese lessons on Duolingo. I am aware that such app won’t help me with learning such a language, but at least I can tell you that katakana sucks. Gods, I hate it so much. Hiragana is so pleasurable to learn. And I know katakana is visually similar, but it is a no no from me. I have learnt some basic kanji signs. And I just admire you so much more.

Hey Knifey! I finally have the right mind set to respond to this ask!

As for the rest. You see i have always worked to hard on studying, so hard it actually burned out everything inside so now all i want to do i nothing! But i cant, i really want to go back to spending my free time in more creative way!

Omg Knifey! Finally i met a museum lover! And gods i want to visit them all! And you know? That Icelandinc museum sounds like such a goal, i want to go there 🥺 and Seoul museum of teddy bears?! I want to go there!

Honestly I love all museums and generally history. I enjoy visiting ruins of castles and villages, going to museums of everything! Art, machines, objects! There are always so many things and so many different ways to find the inspiration! And I always take so many photos for 'future references'. Some time ago i was in a gardens which showed different time of gardens of the world and there was this amazing exhibition of demons from Slavic mithology. That was so awesome! As well as Japanese garden!

In began restaurant i have this fried soy bites in some sweet-spicy sauce. So tasty! Im trying to recreate this recipe but so far its 1:0 for the soy :/

As for my leg. Its swollen AF bht i just... Put on my shoe and pretended it didnt exist. I can walk in good shoes but still im worried. As for that little again... I generally have some weird health issues. I had 5 surgeries for different stuff (spine, tumor, nose) so like... Generally i am healthy... Or at least i was until thst damned foot decided to show off. Its been 4 weeks and im still looking for a solution, running different tests and all. Hopefully they will figure out whag is going on.

Tbh i never listen ed to k-pop. I guess its just nkt my type of music but I enjoy some Japanese and Chinese songs (one i like is Arrogant by Xiao Zhang). if its okay can i ask you a question about turkey/people from turkey, its the term 'racializated' used there? its something uhm that is taked into consideration there? let me explain you, im from argentina, my mom is a black brazilian women and my dad just like i dont know 70% of my class is what people from usa for example call 'brown' latinos, like dilan for example of skam es, i and many poc people call those people instead of 'brown', 'racializated' many of them feel and me included tbh+ 1/

+feel the term is not really correct or many friends feel uncomfortable with it so they rated 'racializated', im not sure if you speak spanish there is this person @/haluami they is a indigenous person who wrote very good texts about this topic there is one about racializated people, and basically society put you down because of your skin color, traits, and / or ethnicity, so i can't help but wonder if thats the case of yousef, but im not turkish so i understand concepts change+ 2/

+depends on the country, culture, etc i understand all of that, so i have a lot of doubts because i dont want to break the privacy of course of the actor of yousef but i wonder if the character 'take' stuff about him or if they are statments in the show itself, i dont know, the poc term itself have some stuff people agree or not, its all a very complicated situation i still believe the show treatment to non-white males is bad i dont know but i will hear and see others opinion the 'white washing'

well first of all, I want to say that I’m not an expert on these issues, but I also think that I can answer your questions to some extent, at least I will try my best. and I hope I don’t offend anyone, please call me out if I do so (that’s for my fellow citizens of turkey) so here I go: (sorry it turned out to be so long)

1- I haven’t heard the term “racialization” before, so I looked it up and I realized that I know what that is, just I wasn't familiar with its name. From what I get, it means ascribing stereotypes on people about their races. So if that’s what you mean, then sure, we have this in turkey unfortunately. but i’m not an expert on sociology and other sciences regarding this topic, so any other Turkish person could heard this term, just not me.

2- Turkey is an ethnically rich country, I don't know if you know the historical developments but this is the shortest way to address this, we have a lot of different cultures here, but not as much as the times before the WW1. Nowadays, there are Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, a small amount of Rum (orthodox christians whose descendants are from the Byzantine Empire), Laz (similarly their descendants are from the Pontus Rum Empire which was located in the northern region of Turkey, but they are mostly Turkish nationalist muslims rn) people and other small communities of different cultures. well I'm rambling lol :))))

3-well some of these people accept these “racialized” prejudices when they are not offensive (from what I get at least) for example some of Laz people accept that most of the Laz people have some familiar facial features or some Kurdish people joke about how their uncle/aunt is younger than them due to their family structure etc. but mostly this racialization occurs in an offensive way like calling Kurdish people terrorists (bc of PKK, a Kurdish (terrorist) military group -- this is a way too controversial topic, so I won’t be mentioning this again, I don’t want to talk about this, sorry) or denying Armenian Genocide (again, this is a controversial topic too and interestingly recent although this issue regards the events during and after WW1) so to answer your question, yes there is racialization in turkey.

4- about yousef: well I watched sana season on February 2019 so I can’t remember all the details about him being from Turkey. I just remember he went to Turkey at the end of the season and I kinda remember that he wasn’t a muslim although his family practiced Islam, but I’m not so sure so I’ll just assume I remember correctly. 

5- Yousef isn’t a man of color. there are darker skinned Turkish people for sure but having a lighter skinned Turkish actor to play a Turkish character is NOT white washing. because there are lighter skinned Turkish people too. I don’t really know what comes to mind when you (I mean non-Turkish people) think about a Turkish person, but from my perspective, I can’t really draw an average Turkish person for you. there are caucasian looking Turkish people, there are mongloid looking Turkish people, heck there are afro-Turkish people too. So, yep Yousef is not white-washed. He’s not even white. AND I certainly call that he’s too white to be considered as moc. but I’m not an expert, just an ordinary Turkish woman. 

6- Most recently, Turkish youth tend to leave practicing Islam and instead become atheist or deist or agnostic. I can guess why, though I’m not sure if I should say it but you can search it from google, pretty sure you can find the answer :) So, Yousef being an atheist/not Muslim is a really good rep for Turkish youth bc I’m sure that most people assume Turkish people are %99.9 faithful muslims.

7- However, I can assure you that Yousef does not reflect any racialization happening in Turkey. I wouldn’t want a Norwegian internet show talking about these issues too, but I would really like if Druck (German SKAM) dwelled upon these issues since there is a big Turkish community (I’m talking about a near million in number, maybe more) and there are huge issues of/regarding Turkish people that could be reflected in national tv, and I would like to see a more politically active/woke Turkish character (in a Jonas sense) in Druck (because since 2012-2013, the amounts of politically active youth is increasing more than ever, bc what’s happening rn in Turkey -again, you can just take a look in Turkish news- ) but assuming from the appearance of Ismail Inci (new gen Druck character) this is not the case, one can only hope for deeper (by deep, I mean not just this goofy guy who only talks about kebab or girls or Turkish/German rap) Turkish characters though :(

8- I don’t know much about the actor but he sounded fluent in Norwegian so I can assume that 1) he was born in Norway or 2) they moved to Norway when he was younger. and from that, I can guess that he’s not familiar to racialization as much as a Turkish person living in Turkey and that could be the huge reason why Julie and the crew didn’t give Yousef a chance to dwell upon these. 

9- and I know I told you this, but if someone else tries to read this whole thing, Yousef is not the Turkish version of the name, it’s Yusuf (both u’s are read staccato) and I don’t know why his name is Yousef instead of Yusuf.

So you message him the next day and he takes you to all his favorite places around seoul

You're seeing and eating some of the best food and listening to him talk to the waiter and the attendants everywhere you went

You realize he's famous when you see a picture of him and the rest of the group on your second "see seoul trip" and his ears turn red and suddenly he's apologizing (but he's speaking so fast you can't figure out what for)

Otherwise the apology may be the one thing you 100% recognize from Korean Duolingo

Overall you're in Korea for month after that, just out of college and you choose to explore the world before being forced into the everyday grind... well you spend almost everyday with him even though sometimes it's at the most random of times

Like 2am when his practice is over but the chicken place is still open and he is asking you what you explored today and telling you about his dancing

Or 6am when he is waking up and taking you to his favorite breakfast place and helping map out your day

Or 30 mins at noon and he's staring at you shovel your food in instead of shoveling his own lunch in. You have to yell at him to hurry and eat so he can get back to practice

One time it's in the middle of the day at a quicm lunch and he asks you how your country twerks and you just straight up laugh at him (like maybe you can twerk or maybe you can't but you don't need him to know how to do it...)

Also your korean is getting way better and his english is significantly improving (so much so that his band members are actively noticing he is speaking better on vlives? and disappearing at every break???)

Three of them confront him about it and let's be real this boy can't lie so he spills every detail about you: from the way the light catches your eye when you're talking about your passions to the eager glint when you are trying your best to remember a word for your story

They tell him to be careful because you're not sticking around the city and they don't know how fans will react.

They don't want see his heart broken. But also it's nice to see him so happy

You didn't kiss until the last day you spent together, actually the last few minutes

He came to the airport (though you told him multiple times he didn't have to because of press and what not) but he moved his schedule (and everyone else's) to see you off

It was the worst goodbye you've ever experienced, like leaving college and your safe net was one thing, leaving your mom to flying half way across the world was another, but not knowing if you would see the guy you'd spent the last month with hit so deep you couldn't quite comprehend

At least you'd see your friends again and your parent, but him? He was famous and also from a different continent what are the chances it would ever be like this again? Probably zero.

So that kiss hurt so much but you meet like two dying men deprived of water and when you broke apart (his mask around his chin) he promised to come visit if you promised to come back

And of course you did, promise, though you didn't tell him spending another month abroad probably wasn't gonna work but maybe a few days at least

Then you're giving one last kiss and thinking of what it could be, living in your last moments before you hope on a plane home

okay so idk if you watched/are planning on watching falcon and winter soldier but i watched the first episode the other day and they were speaking french (just a few seconds) and I UNDERSTOOD SOME WORDS DLDJDJ and i was so proud of myself. i‘ve only ever learned french with duolingo lol (i only do like 5 mins a day and that‘s why i was so surprised that i understood some of it!!). and yeah apart from latin i feel like italian, german, french and english are all similar in a sense.. i mean obviously they‘re completely different languages but for example there are some grammatical constructions in french that i think i wouldn‘t understand if i only spoke english? so when i translate those things into english you can‘t directly translate them bc you say things differently, but when i translate them into german then it makes more sense to me. idk that‘s something i noticed so i feel like if you already know multiple languages it‘s easier to learn another language compared to if you only know one language and are trying to learn a second one. even if the languages aren‘t similar then i think you get the hang of it easier.

ikd slsjsjs also i don‘t want you to think that i‘m a linguistic genius or anything lmfao, like i‘m only fluent in english and german and i‘m just a wannabe (ew that word) polyglot sksj (yes i had to google polyglot— i do think learning ancient greek would be super cool tho? like imagine studying latin AND ancient greek, whew). and honestly i don‘t think i‘ll ever be fluent in another language bc i don‘t plan on living anywhere other than germany or possibly england and i‘m not dedicated enough to properly learn any other languages esp if i don‘t have anyone to speak the language with. but i still try my best and i just love language/languages as a whole so yeah i‘m happy & just learning as much as i can dkdjh🥰

Your Spanish is so good! I've been trying to learn for months but I struggle with it quite a lot. How did you do it?

muchas gracias!! la cosa mas importante es practicar. practicing regularly is the only way to retain a language. practice includes reading- i read any material i have access too that was at my level (or a bit above), talking (to other speakers or to my cat lol), and writing. i especially think writing is a great practice. a simple way to do a little every day is by journaling in spanish, its a simple routine that fits into the day neatly like i dont have to set aside large amounts of time or resources to do it. i would write all i could with no translator/dictionary, then add stuff after looking up words, then go through and edit (usually the next day) using a translator or friend. i also love writing extremely simple fiction using words i know. talking to people online also really helps! duolingo is also helpful for a little everyday practice in refreshing your vocabulary. spanish childrens books are also awesome. my copy of the magic treehouse in spanish serves like a bible. i studied it religiously to get all the words and phrases. practicing in my head a lot is also helpful, just keeping the language at the forefront of my mind instead of only digging it out at specific practice times. like when i have a thought in english, i try to translate it into spanish too. it comes easier and easier with practice. simple simple phrases, like “necesito llamar a mi mamá” or naming objects around the house as i approach them (”voy a la puerta” “esta es la cocina, el libro, la guittara, el gato). use every word/phrase you know as often as you can in your head.

i got another ask about learning spanish/italian so tomorrow im going to answer that with more specific advice and links to resources so look out for that!

one problem with my exposure to korean being mostly from kpop (and related content like variety shows and reality shows and vlogs) and things like duolingo is that i have no idea how to swear in korean. 

i know what some korean swears are, or really just the big one tbh (basically the stand-in for “fuck” or “fuckin”), but idk how to actually use it. and any number of other curse words too, like... at least people who pick up a bit of japanese comprehension from anime get exposed to things like that lmao.... or people who pick up like any european language from any european media... and certainly people who pick up english from english language media, especially american, are exposed to a fuckton of swears cause we swear so much that it’s essentially devalued the swear words, leaving them more or less filler words and colloquial slang used by everyone instead of words that hold a lot of weight and power.... 

but korean media is scrubbed very clean of all that stuff, and i understand why. hallyu (the “korean wave”) is one of korea’s biggest cultural exports, and the government has really made a super strong effort to promote it and cultivate it. they really wanna make it look good. i dont think thats necessarily wrong or shady of them, because i think the korean people and language are good, i think every culture and language are good. it’s not like korea is a massive superpower running a gigantic state propaganda program or whatever, they’re a country with a history of being subjected to colonization and war and i think it makes sense for them to want to promote and cultivate some art. 

i also think there’s way more artistry and creativity in kpop than people give it credit too, because sure the money from the government is just so that kpop can be sort of a propaganda and increase korea’s status globally, but the people who actually make the songs, make the outfits, make the stages, make the music videos, train incredibly hard to master their craft of dancing singing and performing, etc... like... a lot of legitimate hard work goes into this stuff. even if you dont like the music or music videos or things like that conceptually, you have to admit that a lot of the stuff is very elaborate, and people put a lot of themselves into that stuff. so i dont think its some straightforward “kpop is just propaganda made to make korea look good” thing, i think it’s just creative people being creative, and it’s the CEOs and politicians who make money from it all who want it to be propaganda. i think the performers and designers and musicians who get involved do so because they want to do their thing, first and foremost.

but yeah, one side effect of that is the fact that kpop idols have to watch what they say. it’s not that different from a lot of media in english, and an american celebrity isnt allowed to swear when they go on certain shows. but at least in that case, there are a lot of other avenues where that celebrity is allowed to swear (or talk about sex, politics, drugs, any number of other topics like that. im just using swearing as an example). korea doesnt have as much of that, and partially that’s because a lot of korean media is made with korea’s reputation to the rest of the world in mind, but another factor is that korea is just a lot smaller than a lot of people realize. kpop seems huge, and there are definitely a lot of people involved in it, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s pretty small. there are probably less than 100 currently active kpop groups who are relevant (sustaining themselves, have a decent enough fanbase, not in danger of disbanding) at any given time, and even that might honestly be a generous estimation, depending on your criteria for those things. the disparity between the top groups and the smallest groups is massive, and yet a lot the members of the top group might be friends with the members of the smallest group, because they live and work and went to one of the two or three schools of performing arts in seoul, and maybe some were trainees together at a company, or they met backstage at a music show, or any number of things like that. compare that to the american music industry... even just within a single genre, you would not be able to list all the currently active and relevant artists. it’s just too big. 

this got kind of off topic, but it’s all a single train of thought, really. i’m just thinking about why it is that i’ve never really encountered the word for “penis” despite having been learning korean steadily for almost two years. i know what it is, but only because i’ve looked it up. that’s just kinda the reality of the situation, for better or worse.

i just hate how im doing nothing exciting for most of my life now like... yeah i used to go to concerts a few times a year i guess but i cant do that now but i sure am not doing anything else thats fun or productive or challenging either :( im not rly drawing, barely make any posts w photos i made, didnt watch any content i couldve gotten from weverse membership despite it costing so much, i dont look for jobs regularly, i dont call back to health organizations or just weeks late, i deactivated my etsy and idk if ill ever re-open it again bc it seems like such a hassle nd requires better quality and a greater audience which i cant get as long as i never fucking draw nor post shit, i still havent watched mots on:e, i gave up on trying to learn basic words w duolingo months ago, my room is such a fucking mess soon after having cleaned it and it just feels so futile to keep cleaning when i have no energy for it, im still nowhere w the improvement of my sleeping schedule i was meant to make, i often dont feel much excitement abt music as i would love to or feel expected to when someone asks me abt a cb, i rly struggle w showering regularly despite being on the verge of turning sick bc my back nd neck r so cold from dried up sweat after working, nd im just frustrated bc i feel like drawing, dancing etc, just creative stuff tht can be a stress-reliever seem only possible once i finally have a more structured daily life and dont need to worry this fucking much abt an income or when i might have a bit more energy / focus / better executive functioning which is like never to me rn. i miss talking to my friends nd i want to watch stuff together online but friends r burdened too w their own struggles or have no time / our schedules dont align well at all and have shitty internet nd i do watch bts stuff and kpop videos in general w my best friend but he doesnt rly emote much to / nags on things he doesnt care for that much bc autism, nd i shouldnt complain abt this either bc im the same, nd i shouldnt force him to watch stuff w me either :(( i just wish i could watch this stuff w a friend who's more interested but still doesnt have like super intense energy or smth. i did use to meet up w a friend who lives in this city but i havent spoken to her in a while bc she eventually just stopped responding to tweets i sent her in DMs and idk why shes not responding bc she always says shes lonely but then ignores my messages since a few months, like initially bc she said she didnt like the idea of meeting up w friends even at a distance, which i get i guess, but then i saw she did go on trips nd whatnot w her friends but i guess those are herhousemates. god urgh i sound so bitter but i just feel so stuck on every aspect nd no its not bc of the fucking pandemic bc ive been in this boring place for most of my life nd the only person who can get me out is myself, if only i TRIED more to do something unknown even if it scares me or TRY to contact someone immediately before i forget or TRY to force myself to think abt other stuff than my special interests too bc i cant get any fucking shit done as long as im not incorporating these tasks into my everyday life.

I dont really know what to say at this point

Im sorry, I feel bad for all this. For being the type of person I am, for being such a mess, by not b e i n g someone. I feel like just,,, a person taking up space? I have no skills that make me useful, I have no interests outside of what people show me. I feel like im overly dependent on everyone around me, and nobody deserves to have to deal with that. I sit and pretend like I a m someone worthy of the love im given and that I could change for the better, but with the way I handle things and the way I a m,,, I honestly dont believe that. Im selfish, overly emotional, overly dependent, easily jealous, dumb, unable to handle conflict or others emotions, not good at comprehension pr processing things, and just,,, I have so many cons with me. The best pro I have is my listening skills, but I hardly ever retain anything I listen to, its a bad habit, and it tends to make me feel like a bad person. For good reason,,, I remember once my best friend asked if I knew their favorite color, and at the time, I just,,, d i d n t get it right, and they corrected me and later asked me again, and I got it wrong again. Its blue and grey by the way,,, But thats probably wrong,,, they could have changed it and I wouldnt know. We dont talk as much anymore,,, I feel bad about it, like im losing everyone around me? Like,, if I d o talk to someone I usually end up manipulating the conversation to talk about myself,,, because as much as I hate the person I am, I s u r e love to make myself the victim and talk about myself,,, because im s o conceited without meaning to be.

I really love the stars,,, I cant tell you anything cool or nice about stars, I just know that its beautiful and makes me feel better in mysterious ways. But anyways,,, yeah, walks are the best way for me to feel better,,, but its risky, so as second best coping thing, its music,,, which is why I usually have that end bit with the music. I think my music is the o n e thing I have that makes me feel as if I a m someone. Yes, my music is literally taken from everyone around me, but like,,, nobody has my exact taste in music and thats what makes me feel,,, good? Like, its my taste! Like,,, my sister and I have several mutual favorite songs, but, she listens to MCR and FOB while I never really got into them, dont get me wrong! I jam! And I respect! But like,,, idk, it wasnt ever my favs yknow? But yeah! Walks and music just make my head seem not so fuzzy,,, and its better than the feeling of wanting to worse things.
