Hi I’m new to tumblr so I’m not sure how you normally post on here but I wanted to try posting some sketches of earth from tsams! I’m not the best with anatomy so I won’t lie I did trace over some photos (REAL PHOTOS NOT ART) I found on Pinterest and modified the proportions to fit my design, but I’m trying to improve lol. For now I just rlly wanted to flesh out my design for earth which I couldn’t do while my anatomy looked like crap 😭 all the full body ones I used references for but the one in the right corner was all me so I’ve got that to my name at least 💪 I’ll include my “reference” pictures as well :> and below the pics is an explanation of the design because I love to gush about this kind of thing. Fair warning, it’s pretty long LMAO

Hehe now it’s time for me to gush about my lil design 😈

So the first major difference you probably noticed (aside from body shape) is the very fluffy clothing I have her in. The leg warmers and… fingerless gloves? Leg warmers that she put on her arms? Idk what the arm ones are called but yk what I’m talking about lol. When I first noticed earths little rainbow headband my brain immediately said “80’s workout videos”. The big hair, the rainbow headband, it just immediately jumped ot at me and stuck. I decided to give her oversized leg warmers in that same rainbow pattern because it made me sad that her actual design doesn’t have the rainbow anywhere else. It’s funky and I like it what can I say.

Next I decided I really wanted her to wear thigh-highs. I personally love thigh-highs and also it gave me an excuse not to think about her leg mechanics. I tend to draw Sun and Moon like ball joint dolls, but it gets a lil funky to draw when they are bending their limbs so having a fluffy excuse to hide them was ideal lol. I decided to go with the bold choice of putting thigh highs and leg warmers on her, which I don’t regret even tho it probably seems like a lot. I might change a few things about her later down the line since these were just basic sketches so don’t worry if you hate it.

I gave her shorts because a skirt just didn’t feel right for her. I feel like a daycare attendant would be very active, even if earth tends to sit with the quieter kids, and a skirt would be very awkward to climb around in. I figured shorts would be good. I drew them like jean shorts since that was the original intention but they could be cloth rather than denim gimme time to think about it 💀

I had a lot of trouble decided whether the thingies on her shoulders were stand-alone or like pieces of hair she keeps up front (probably attached cuz she’s a robot) I decided on making them attached to the bigger floor of hair cuz I thought it looked cutest on the pic with her shoulders up and in front of her face lol.

Onto her chest plate thing, I was considering making it an actual shirt but decided against it. I wanted her to have a crop top bc I love crop tops so I just made it so her chest area was painted like a shirt, and then her middle area was back to her “skin” color, so it’s almost like a crop top but not really…?

Last but not least is her face, I also made that her “skin” color and just put the blue and green as her cheeks! I thought it looked cutest that way. She also has heterochromia cuz when a character has two main colors I really enjoy putting them on opposite sides as often as possible haha. So her green cheek has her blue eye and her blue cheek has her green eye. I know her original model has two blue eyes but this was what I went with.

Anyways that was super long and I’m super nervous about posting this so I’m just gonna hit post and if I find a typo or decide my lil explanation was 4 paragraphs too many I’ll fix it later. Have a nice day whoever is still reading this! :>

As for how I make my AUs/how I approach AUs,,, honestly I think I’ve just consumed so much content in my youth plus my aspirations to work in the animation industry have made me kind of understand storytelling to a degree, so I think it’s fun to take some ideas from content I like and change it to make a whole new story

Like for AT AU obviously there is no Adventure Time character that will perfectly align personality wise with a member of Ateez, so instead of wildly changing someone to force them into the exact role of Princess Bubblegum for example, or make someone Jake, I just take ideas from the series that I really enjoyed (post apocalypse, magic, cursed character, platonic familial relationships complicated backstories and potentially morally grey characters) and then let that inspire me to relate it to in this case, Ateez.

For Mafia au I had a lot of help brainstorming that but I think the root of ideas comes from maybe like. I see a picture and I do a doodle. Then my brain thinks of other things I kind of know/want to see within that world. I drew Jongho and Mingi in mafia au before anyone else and before it was a big au with fics to go with it. After the drawing I kept having more ideas and then @nnnnnnnothingtoseehere had ideas and suddenly it grew. I watched a lot of mafia/crime movies/series during the pandemic tbh so I had lots of inspiration. AUs like this are fun cus while AT AU directly is inspired by a pre-existing series, this AU is just based on an idea and there are a bunch of sources of inspiration!

Then for my Cowboy au that’s kind of like. My own little project. I’m kind of thinking I may eventually change designs around to make it not an au but an original “project” just for something to put in my portfolio. Of if people really liked it maybe I’d do something with it. But sometimes the beauty of an AU over an original project is people already know and love the characters which takes a lot of the work presenting new characters and hoping people enjoy them. Anyways, yea for this AU as it is rn, it’s just born out of my love for the western aesthetic. Also during the pandemic I watched a ton of spaghetti westerns as well as newer westerns and I found I just really love the vibe. Even when I don’t love the movie it’s really the vibe that I enjoy, couldn’t really explain why haha 🥲. I then realized I strongly dislike drawing horses and in fact (controversial opinion but it is my own) I’m not really a big fan of horses so I thought I’d lose interest quickly if I had to force myself to draw horses for certain drawings. I decided to do motorcycles instead just cus I thought it’d be more enjoyable for me to learn how to draw that than horses lol. So then the AU became lik the. Futuristic Cowboys and then that’s how it got the way it currently is

As for making the story it definitely helps to have someone to riff off sometimes. I thought of most the ideas for AT AU story wise by myself but when I was first coming up with it I was sharing all of my ideas with my younger sister, and occasionally she’d get an idea too, or expand on something a little bit. I don’t really know how to explain the way I come up with the overall story I think I just decide on a bunch of bullet points that I want to happen just ideas in the void. Then I think of major plot points I want to happen. Then I think of dynamics of characters. Then I just start organizing those ideas. Not necessarily in that order but those are the kind of starting points I guess!!

Since my old laptop is dead and it’ll be another 2 days before I get a new one, I decided to go through traditional works! Dates and explanations below~ --- First Image: Seedos with and without his mask, then holding a plant, 16 January 2018. To be honest, I drew this bc I was rlly thinking about the past and all I could think about was my fave character from Viva Piñata.

Second Image: Seedos Headcanon Concept, 22-23 January 2018. The scar on his chest was from a fight he got in with Dastardos in my old AU (I hadn’t decided ages but age-wise it didn’t really make sense with the canon information) where Seedos initially confronted Stardos/Dastardos about something or whatever and they got into a fight that got physical and resulted in a wound straight to Seedos’s/Sidos’s chest (it was before he changed his name I think???). He ended up fine and was rushed to a doctor but... it was whack lol. Also in the image he was written as 19 years old and 5′8″ while now I currently headcanon him as 18 and 5′7″.

Third Image: Dastardos Headcanon Concept, 23-24 January 2018. You know, I completely disregarded canon with this one, mainly because of his scar pattern on his arm. In-game it’s stripes/rings around his arms and fingers, while in mine he has non-patterned curly scars running from his shoulder to his fingers. After this I got rid of the scars and I made his hair curlier/messier like his brother’s. I did keep the eye scar, the weird eyes, and the gashes by the mouth though. In this photo he is written as 24 years old and 5′10″, while now I headcanon him as 25 years old and 5′11″.

Fourth Image: Flora Concept Art, 29-31 January 2018. My baby!!! It feels like forever since I came up with her. I do miss the leaf anklets I gave her but it just wasn’t practical (granted her outfit isn’t practical now either but at least I gave her shoes). It’s funny because I remember spending hours on her mask, figuring out how to shape it, and I eventually landed on the design we all know now. She didn’t have a last name at the time, but I knew she would be Hispanic at least. Originally I wrote her as 18 years old and 5′5″, but currently she is 19 years old and 5′6″.

Fifth Image: Flora and Seedos First “Ship” Art, 02 and 05-06 February 2018. The second I designed Flora, I had a weird idea in my head. Flora liked flowers, and Seedos liked (obviously) seeds. Seeds make plants, so maybe the two would be friends? I did end up going a step further and making them possible lovers, but I never fleshed it out back then. It was more of a silly concept than an actual ship. Funny enough, I used to headcanon that she would (surprisingly) have interest in DASTARDOS (don’t ask, I genuinely don’t recall the reason), but I eventually scrapped the idea and stuck with Seedos because it just made more sense.

Sixth Image: Flora’s Mom Concept Design, 21 May 2018. I loved making her!!! I knew Flora’s mother had a major impact in her life (even if not necessarily good), and I wanted to design a mother who looked feminine yet also very stern. At the time she didn’t have a name (I referred to her as “Ms. Bolívar”), but currently her name is Ismeralda Bolívar and she is 39 years old. I still have some more to develop, but I’m planning on writing a story for it.

Seventh (and Final) Image: Flora and Seedos Wedding, 16-17 and 19 June 2018. Tbh I had NO reason to draw this other than the fact that I was SO into the idea that Flora/Seedos would totally happen given the conditions that they would cross paths. This would happen years in the future, and I feel that despite Seedos seeming very antisocial and alien to the idea of romance, as they get older Flora opens him up to the idea and they may never marry, but Flora would like to dream of it happening (and tbh so would I. Imagine the plant-themed wedding!!! Very aesthetic). The text pointing to Flora reads “almost in tears b/c of joy” and the text pointing to Seedos says “uncomfortable in his suit but otherwise fine”. --- Sooo yeah that was my old traditional art!!! Expect more in a day or two because I can’t work digitally ;w;

Sorry if youve been asked this before ;; but i'm in HS rn and im aiming to submit an Sher Animation portfolio soon! And they completely changed it this year so im sUUUUper stressed. Especially for the personal pieces... Do you have any tips for getting in? Also how many tries on average does it take to get in ;; im worried i might not be good enough right now hhh. But I rlly look up to u and i love ur art so it would mean a lot if u would respond!! Thank you for ur time :'D !!!!

hhh sorry for the late reply, i had a big exam this week n its been stressing me out :’) luckily thats over n done now so!! heres some advice!!

im not entirely familiar w the new portfolio guidelines, but i do know in a broader sense the elements that ppl are looking for. I’m not gonna give u a bunch of art tips because you’ve probably heard them all a bajillion times: keep a sketchbook, study anatomy, look at lots of art, etc… see this ask for more technique-based advice.

what i will tell you is, besides artistic technique, the main thing this program wants is artists with a strong sense of STORY. animation is the hybrid of art and story-telling in a time-based medium, and you may b artistically talented but if you don’t have a strong grasp on storytelling this may not b the program for you.

with that in mind, take every opportunity in your portfolio to depict some sort of story.  your personal pieces are the perfect opportunity to display this.  You may rly like a drawing of ur oc that u did, but if you cant get any sense of character traits or narrative from that piece, you should probably pick something else.  your personal pieces should depict some sort of broader narrative, ideally with a sense of composition.  look up some concept art for some of your favorite animation, and take note of how one illustration provides you with an understanding of plot, character, setting, or some other aspect of story-telling.  Try to tell us something about your story, however vague it may be, thru ur artwork.

composition’s a big one too.  obviously this doesnt apply to the more technical portions of the portfolio, but for elements such as your personal pieces and storyboard, composition is rly important.  look for clarity in your compositions, particularly your storyboard.  the purpose of a storyboard is to show the rest of your team how you want a scene to play out, so strive for clear transitions (how did the character get from point a to point b) and insight into a character’s thoughts and emotions.  good composition doesn’t necessarily mean detail, it means creating a piece that is balanced and clear, where the eye is drawn to the most important subjects first.  whether this is done thru line weight, lighting or some other element of design is up to you.

i got into this program on my first try, but keep in mind that a) im 21 and b) i took time off from school to work n save up money, n during that time drew and taught myself stuff as much as i could.  Some ppl i know got in fresh outta high school, others got in after a couple of tries.

what a lot of ppl do if they don’t get in on the first try is study art fundamentals at sheridan for a year.  the purpose of fundies is to give everyone a multi-discipline approach to making art, and from there ppl branch off to whatever program they wanna do.  Fundies is specifically made to help students get into the program of their choice, and offers lots of resources for critique and portfolio-building.  A good amount of ppl i kno in animation got there after taking art fundamentals for a year and then re-applying.

that being said, there’s rly no failsafe way to predict whether you’ll get in on the first try. every wave of applicants is unique and there are definitely ppl who get rejected even if they deserve a place in the program.  That’s just how it goes for any competitive college program tbh,, the whole thing is p subjective.  I kno this probably isnt v comforting, but if you rly have ur heart set on animation i urge you to keep trying, and in the case of rejection, to use that as an opportunity to focus on improving ur weak points.

dream #41

katie asked me to have lunch with her so we planned to eat together with some of her friends after class. they actually ended up liking me and i felt really self confident. after that ended i went home and went upstairs to the guest room where i saw a bunch of friends. idk what we were doing but at one point i could see into the master bedroom and drew was there. i started getting really excited bc i wanted to see her. i saw anika and made up an excuse that she needed to help me with LSOH costume designs so that she would have to get up and bring me into the bathroom. once i got in, nobody really acknowledged or saw me so i stalled a little bit until drew caught sight of me. i jumped onto the bed and gave her a huge hug. i curled up into her and we talked naturally without it being weird. her bf and olivia were there also talking even though i just wanted to spend time alone with drew. i remember pressing my head against her pillow and it smelled so good just like her. pippin was playing on the tv except it looked more like mickey mouse or we caught up and cuddled until gray and olivia said things that made me jealous i wasn’t as close to her as they were anika was actually still in the room but she knew i was distracted so she awkwardly left while i was curled up in drew’s arms. after this part the dream changed and all of a sudden we ended up at the student activities fair??? and i was there being kinda cute and talkative and everyone loved it for some reason. some kids showed up at our table and asked about the organization; then they decided they wanted to join. dream changed again and all of a sudden we’re with all the new students and everyone in the organization in this circle. for some reason we were singing the songs from LLL rather than pippin which was weird. drew sat on the oppositen side of the circle and i felt rlly awk because i kept staring at her. we all played some games but then suddenly this tall asian dude shows up and starts spraying this aerosol can at an asian kid and two kids around him. they start grabbing their eyes and twitching in pain and the asian kid gets up and follows the man, who turns out to be his dad. his dad apparently didn’t want his kid to do something theatre related. before he left he turned towards me and sprayed the can and my eyes started feeling like they were burning??? i got up and wandered around the building, trying to find the man but i couldn’t. when i got back to the circle, a lot of people were gone. i decided i’d had enough and i went back upstairs to leave because i was so shaken. before i left the school there was a classroom filled with cops and i ended up with one of my friends, scared of that aerosol man. she gave the cops a cheek swab and i told them that someone scary was around,,, iggcnuutrdgjn the end lmao
