Tumblr media
In an attempt to preserve my comics, fandom art, and such and the love, effort, and fun I had while creating it, I've been uploading these digital collections for anyone to download ... because I don't see the point of having them buried in my PC catching virtual dust or subject to the nonsense-of-the-week that social media has going more often each time.
And so, I upload them to my Ko-fi shop for free/or on a pay-what-you-want basis.
What I create is for people, not for training software or giving random companies money. I firmly believe that art is only completed when it has a public and that you, dear reader, have an active role in completing a story by experiencing it. So these are for all the fans too, y'all make this house a home.
Tumblr media
And if you ask yourself "Why get the PDF? " I have a couple of reasons:
I put a lot of effort into making some panels and details better, and the comics have fewer typos than the version I posted.
With the way social media deletes things randomly, I really don’t want these comics to disappear into the internet void… This is the best way I have to preserve them and for you all to enjoy them without having to print them.
Extra content! Since I develop ideas for YEARS, I like curating and organizing my ideas/drawings so the whole project feels cohesive, has some behind-the-scenes process, and looks rad af.
I don't like putting fanart behind a paywall but I'm not gonna lie, sometimes getting paid for a bit of hard work is rewarding and any tip means a lot to me. That's why these are up in a pay-what-you-want
I still have so much art to create,  organize, and share with you all! keep an eye on my ko-fi for more <3

They announced recently that John Kearns is going to film his Varnishing Days show, which is great news because I keep reading things about how good it is but I don't think he'll still be performing it by the time I'm in Edinburgh in August (I assumed that anyway, but assume it more than I know he's filming it). I said at the time that I'm surprised he's never released a stand-up special before, even in some underground quirky audio-only medium, as you might expect from John Kearns.
I was immediately corrected on that, and told that he has released a full stand-up show, and specifically has released it in an underground quirky audio-only medium:
It costs a lot of money for something where I was only interested in the digital download, as I don't own a turntable, and I think releasing stuff on vinyl is a neat idea in theory and I respect the underground quirkiness, but obviously I'm actually going to listen to it on headphones. However, to be honest, I do owe the UK comedy venues some money for the amount of stand-up I've been ridiculously lucky enough to hear over the last couple of years, without actually entering their venues to hear it live (I would if I could but there's an ocean). So when I get the chance to pay a UK comedy venue for some comedy, I will take it. I've heard some stuff from The Monkey Barrel for free, they've earned my money. Also I got to save a bit of money by having the record itself shipped to a friend in the UK, so I didn't have to pay for shipping to Canada, and I still got the digital download.
Anyway, it was really good. About what I expected from John Kearns, though I may have been slightly surprised by how little he relied on physical stuff. Which makes sense, as if the show was heavy on visual jokes, he wouldn't have released it on vinyl. But I'd gotten the impression that a lot of John Kearns' comedy is about the wig and the teeth and I think I assumed from that that he has props and stuff and does more of a character. I mean, it definitely is a character. But the character is just an extra exaggerated version of a stand-up persona, when I'd been expecting a character that's further divorced from reality than that.
All of these were good things to me. It was whimsical but not inaccessible, which was great, because I was prepared to put effort into accessing the inaccessible for the sake of John Kearns, but it's nice that I didn't have to. He jumped around from talking about cooking to the ocean to art history to some things that were vaguely autobiographical, and sometimes he'd get existentially beautiful for a bit and then be right back to discussing tuxedos. He sometimes did that thing where he shouts a funny phrase over and over with it taking on 1.5 new meanings and getting 10% funnier every time. It was great. I hugely enjoyed it.
I highly recommend it if you have a turntable and like playing records, think a John Kearns vinyl record cover would look good on your wall, or just have enough money to pay the price+shipping of a vinyl record for a digital download. I am now even more excited for the release of his filmed show.

hello, how are you?
just wanted to let you know that I like your writing so much I'm seriously considering getting into the fantasy xiv fandom just to read your fics there
Also I'm reading voice and vein and I've just started it but I'm really liking it so far :D
You made a rough day a little easier, thank you.
I can't recommend FFXIV enough, honestly. It's the kind of story I really genuinely needed -- probably earlier than when I found it, but still at the time I found it also.
If you, like me, are wearied by stories more interested in fapping to pessimistic nihilism and want stories that are unapologetically what some people call 'cringe', FFXIV is that story. If you, like me, want a story that actively decides to save characters other stories would kill and call it noble sacrifice, FFXIV is that story. If you, like me, want a story that over the course of its maturity actively and consciously chooses to tell the story of how people live, instead of how they die, FFXIV is that story.
It's not perfect, nothing ever is. There's some things I'm a little disappointed they did, and some plotlines which aren't to my taste. There's only one quest chain I'm actively intending to rewrite for my own purposes, and given how much content FFXIV has that's ... that's a high bar, actually. In all the material presented, I feel that urge with just one optional questline.
Moreover, there's a lot of content. So much content. Content for years. If you download it through the FFXIV website (NOT Steam), you can trial up to level 70 across all jobs and classes and commensurate main scenario quests. That's the base game (A Realm Reborn) and two expansions (Heavensward and Stormblood). Three full games' worth of content for free. There is no time limit on this (unless you go through Steam, which limits you to a month. So don't go through Steam).
ARR has 'season 1' vibes and you can tell, but I still love it. There is a voice-actor shift after ARR patches so be prepared for that if that bothers you, but the story picks up with Heavensward and just keeps going. Stormblood isn't as tight as HVW but I love it a great deal because it hits a lot of my personal pings. For my money (which, again, you won't have to pay because all of those are free), all of it is worthwhile. I needed this game and this style of storytelling so badly in my life. It's the kind of game where you can't remember ever not knowing it, even though you know there must have been a time when you didn't.
You will be limited to a few factors while you're on trial. You won't be able to use the player-economy marketboard, and you won't be able to summon retainers for the extra inventory space, and you won't be able to buy or build your own housing. ... I think those are the biggest limitations, but honestly, for how much you get it's ridiculous what the game offers on trial. Just be prepared for some inventory management.
(Also, the fishing minigame is genuinely fun and engaging, when's the last time you saw that?)
... Pretty much, I highly recommend it, for its own sake. That you might come to it because of my writing, though, that's a gift.
Regardless of whether you pick that up, I hope enjoy your time with Voice & Vein, and thank you for your message.

I appreciate all the baked goods you send my way. But I’ve had my own brain worm with all the nsfw asks about the demon/eldritch au like… poor Elesa running damage control every time those guys completely miss social cues. Like she’s been over this- she made a PowerPoint for this!!!
Darling: “Hey Elesa what kind of phone do you have?”
Elesa: “The iPorygonX 13 why?”
Darling: “Well my phone has been acting weird for the past couple weeks.”
Elesa, immediately smelling Tauros shit: “Oh yeah?”
Darling: “Yeah! Ever since I started at the Gear Station I’ve been having weird glitches!”
Elesa, immediately taking an aspirin for the headache she knows is coming: “Wow, that’s so weird.”
Darling: “Right? Sometimes like my messages disappear, and what’s really, really weird is that I can’t download any of the new dating games off the App Store!”
Elesa, praying to Arceus for patience: “Huh, that’s-thats so weird.”
Darling: “And the worst part- and this might be a TMI and please stop me if you’re uncomfortable-“
Elesa, hoping she’s wrong and doesn’t know where this is going: “Y-Yeah??”
Darling: “Lately like- and you have to promise not to tell anybody- none of my… *whispers* none of my porn videos are loading.”
Elesa, regretting begging for her memories not to be erased. “O-oh that’s… that sucks… like a lot.”
Darling: “I am so sorry if that was over sharing-“
Elesa: “N-no it’s fine…”
Darling: “Like I’m pretty sure it’s not the hosting website, but like either they don’t load at all or they load but the people in it don’t look right. Like somebody re-uploaded the video with bad compression to make all the dudes have grey hair.”
Elesa, placing her head in her hands: “Yeah that’s so bizarre, maybe- maybe getting a new phone would help.”
Darling: “Yeah, I think that’s the only option I have left, if it doesn’t work… I don’t think I can do anything else.”
Elesa knows what other options you have, the two of them probably keenly aware that you would be desperate enough to take them up on their offer.
Elesa misses when she was just a model/gym leader and not an underpaid relationship tutor to a bunch of weird extra-dimensional weirdos.
Enjoy the sweets, I will enjoy your excellent dialogue you keep coming up with for poor tired Elesa and poor unaware of much of anything Darling, it's perfect anon <3
---
Elesa: "Man it sure is nice not having my memories erased and instead knowing that the Subway Bosses are freaks from Eeby Deeby" :)
Darling: "Hey Elesa I can't download any dating sim games :( It just always fails or complains I don't have the space-"
Elesa, getting an aspirin ready: "Oh haha that is weird-"
Darling is embarrassed as she asks Elesa "Also... Is it possible for... ahem, "certain websites" to just... break for one person and one person only"
Elesa:
Darling: "Because like- I've even tried to use my friend's computer... to uh, OH- to watch playthroughs of some of these dating sims I like and they always crash or are limited to 144p until my friend tries to watch them later..."
Elesa, knowing full well Darling is talking about porn sites actually because she has absolutely caught the two idiot demons reading human anatomy books and probably found their copy of the Kama Sutra in their office one unfortunate day:
Elesa, downing the entire bottle of aspirin: I'm sorry I need to go fight some literal demons and make some powerpoint presentations
Darling: What-
Elesa, later, staring into the camera like she's in the office: "I never thought I'd find myself sitting in my office writing a powerpoint on the fact it's considered a dick move in human culture to turn someone's pornography into images of yourself-"
Elesa, head in hands and wondering if there's an even higher dose aspirin at the drug store: "-And yet, Almighty Sinnoh continues to work in mysterious ways."
And underpaid?
The twins are not paying her any physical money at all! :)
...but as they learn more about being "friends"- They start to do nice things for Elesa, especially if she brings them gifts of sweets from their favorite bakeries around Nimbasa.
(Emmet and Ingo are starting to think of Elesa as one of those devoted "followers" or "patrons" so many of their kind have, though Ingo is sure that is not what a friend is supposed to be-)
That Raikou joke Elesa cracked back when she found out they summoned Dialga for you? Emmet shows up in her gym one day, in between challengers and presents her with a baby Raikou! Elesa didn't even know that there could be baby Raikou, but that's not important; the Raikou is so cute! It's got big ol eyes and big pointy teeth that are too big for it's mouth right now! And big ol' paws!
"You like cute pokemon and you said you wanted one of these so I found this little guy running around Johto for you!" And it's one of the few times Elesa is genuinely elated at the twins' behavior, and Emmet seems so happy that he did something right for a change!
Also she can just call them now on the X-Transceiver if she needs a change in the weather. :)

What would you recommend to someone thinking about starting with swtor in this day and age?
Huh that's actually a really good question, and it probably doesn't help that I've not been active for the last two years (they made some fairly substantial gameplay changes to the combat that I didn't like the sound of on paper, I have no personal experience with how it's played out and whether folks think it worked out well in the long term)
I'll put this under a cut to spare people's dashes, and if any friends have their own recommendations based on current gameplay and gearing PLEASE feel free to chip in:
The game has free to play options, and in theory it's entirely possible to play up to the fourth (fifth?) expansion without paying a cent. I don't necessarily think it's particularly as fun as it could be on F2P, because obviously they make things just that little bit more frustrating to try and coax you into spending money, but it's not bad. Just a little slower to progress. And really, if you're not sure if you want to invest in the game (time or money wise), downloading the F2P is a good trial move, because the base game is hands down superior to most of the expansions
There are 8 possible origin stories to choose from - four Republic aligned, and four Imperial aligned. Despite stylistically being the same 4 classes, the story telling has always been the strength of the game and the 8 original classes are all fantastic in their own ways. Admittedly, ask 8 people what they think the best or worse class story is and you'll get 8 different answers. I personally rank the Smuggler (a Han Solo-esqye self insert) as my least favourite, but I've got plenty of friends who think it's the best story. I would die for my Jedi Knight but I think the writing from the story is pretty outrageously bad in places. The Sith Warrior class story changed my life. So did the Imperial Agent, but again, I know people who think they're overrated. Just go with your heart and see what appeals to you when it introduces the class options
There are nine packs that I would consider expansions (more if you include mini gameplay expacs that introduced things like starfighter combat, they always have little brief story quests to explain their origin):
Rise of the Hutt Cartel (adds planet Makeb)
The Dread War (adds planet Oricon, technically a continuation of RotHC but different enough in scope that I would count it as separate)
Shadow of Revan (adds two planets, Rishi and Yavin 4)
Rise of the Emperor (adds planet Ziost, technically a continuation of SoR like TDW was for RotHC)
Knights of the Fallen Empire
Knights of the Eternal Throne
Fractured Alliances (technically a continuation of the last two, but adds Iokath as a playable area)
Onslaught (adds three planets Ossus, Onderon, Mek'Sha)
Legacy of the Sith (have not played so not sure!)
KotFE and KotET moved away from planetary expansions and did chaptered missions, so you couldn't visit the areas of the story unless you replayed the chapter, which was a pain if you enjoyed just running around exploring. Technically we got new planets Zakuul, Odessen and Iokath in those expansions, and Iokath did eventually introduce daily missions and explorable areas, but it wasn't the most popular addition to the canon
I personally enjoy KotFE and KotET because of the amount of time I invested in telling my character's stories in that time period, but I think that Shadow of Revan/Rise of the Emperor had the more compelling storytelling and gameplay. Rishi is for sure my favourite planet in the game, although Onderon comes close and I'm sure Zakuul would've won if we got more ability to just run around and explore
Basic gameplay is pretty straight forward if you've ever played an RPG or MMO before. It's entirely possible to play the vanilla stories without ever needing to play any group content, and you can just treat it like a solo player game with some extra fidgety NPCs in the background of your scenes and pretend they aren't other players. The group content - flashpoints (4 players) and operations (8 or 16 players)- are for the most part pretty great, and a lot of their stories bring more clarity to the main game. As the game gets into the expansions, they start introducing solo player flashpoints which then become the chaptered mission when you get to KotFE.
You also get access to companions right from your first planet, which is great! Every class starts with 5 companions, and that number grows as you get into the expansions. Some of the companions can be romanced, although unfortunately everyone was straight-gated up until Shadow of Revan. After that, earlier companions have occasionally been rewritten to be available to all genders, but not all of them which is frustrating at times. The relationships you build with the companions - whether it's romance or friendship or intense loathing - is genuinely such a great feature of the game, and it's something the later expansions have suffered from, not having your core team around you anymore.
SPEAKING OF, I WILL WARN YOU UP FRONT, SHAE IS NOT A ROMANCE OPTION :P I just don't happen to believe in being restricted to canon when it comes to these sorts of things. She's an NPC, and you can flirt with her now and then in the later expacs, but she's not smoochable.
I can't comment on the current combat system, or the current gearing system, as I've been out of active play for the last few years (ESO got me good) but I hear they've worked out some of the kinks from the revamp. I wasn't overly thrilled with it, as I've played fairly consistently since launch and this was going to be about the fifth complete overhaul of the combat and gearing since launch and after going to the trouble of getting all your characters the best gear multiple times only to be told you have to start from scratch AGAIN wears a little thin after awhile. But! If you're not planning on hardcore raiding, gearing changes shouldn't be that much of an issue
The housing system is fun but there's no real way to decorate well without pumping a lot of your own money into the game which is shitty. I've seen the light in ESO's crafting and being able to craft my own furniture is game-changing
Space combat is a nightmare. My spatial awareness becomes non-existent once I have to steer in a three dimensional space. I have one friend who loves it and used to play constantly but I couldn't ever get used to it
PVP is eh. I've had more fun in PVP in other games, but it's not bad.
The crafting system is fun, but unless you're making your own healing packs or dyes, its not really worth much. Sending your companions off on crafting missions can be fun though, as they come with teensy little snippets of lore and some of them are funny or intriguing. It can get expensive real fast though
The only thing I would caution against is that they've made some fairly unpopular changes just in the last month regarding the cost of quick travel to try and rein in the bloated in-game economy and it seems to have been implemented poorly and unfairly effects low to mid tier players as opposed to the high end players
If you have any questions after all of that, let me know! AND GOOD LUCK!!!

hi sky 🥰 I just downloaded gi and I suck at it djuhsdhsjdh any tips for beginners 👉👈? stay safe, hope you get well soon ❤️
Hi gab!!! Ty!!
Omg I hope you enjoy it!! I just reached AR 56 yesterday!
I'd say to not spend all your primos unless you know you want the character on the 5* banner! Also I'd say not to put any money into it unless you can afford it 😭 especially since it's still gambling, you can still get a character you want through being free to play it just might take a little longer but personally I feel that makes the character feel even more worth it! Of course if you have the money and you wanna pay for gems I ain't gonna tell you what to do!
I don't focus on meta teams myself I just use characters I think are fun and I think that's why I've stuck with the game because I think playing with characters I like and not just ones that are guaranteed to get the big numbers makes me have to work more and I like doing that!
Make sure you do cooking so you can heal characters between battles if you are exploring and don't want to travel to the statues all the time to heal up! Especially for beginners where you may not have discovered most of them yet!
Do ley lines when you can to get extra mora and EXP books to level up characters!!
The game can be a little confusing at the start but you definitely get more into it as you reach higher ranks and can explore a lot more! I spent the last 2 hours or so fucking around and that's all I really do atm!

i feel like there is sometimes a misconception about ads and microtransactions and gatcha in video games that i kinda want to address.
like. im a game dev. friends of mine have already released games or are working on games and while you can still bring out pc games that cost money, that just widely isn't the case anymore for phone games. like be really honest here: did you ever buy an app? even if it was like 0.80 ct? did you ever even consider buying it? i don't think you did and even if you did almost no one else does. phone games need to be fast to download, free and easy to play for people to be ready to spend their time with them
now if you worked on a game for a long time and it is a game you really care about, you are fucking heartbroken to ruin your own games with ads. like ive been to discussion boards, even ones where friends of mine were part of the discussion, and the general consensus (in indie companies) is: "if there is any other way, i would prefer not to cluster my game full of ads, because it destroys the game feeling i want to achieve in the game, leaves players frustrated and just really brings down the general experience of a piece of media i have put 100s of hours of work into"
like. the reason ads in games is the way to go is because there is literally no other way to ethically finance your phone games without literally going broke. if you put a price tag on your phone game beforehand, no one will play it, like when i say that, i don't mean: "you only get rich if you put ads in your game" i mean: "you can only make a basic income if you put ads in your game".
there are other ways to finance app games, but some of these are very unpopular by audiences and some of these are really unethical.
a friend of mine released a game both on steam and as an app. on steam it was payment up front and had really good reviews. on phone, he made the first level playable for free (as a demo, so to say) and all other content was to be unlocked when paying for the game. his game was reviewed by an average of one star in the appstore and playstore. why? because people felt entitled to getting phone games for free. playing one level of a game and then having to pay for the rest - a concept as old as video games - felt like a "scam" to them. (by the way getting review-bombed like that is fucking devastating if this game is your literal only source of income)
some other methods of financing your game are straight-up unethical: literal gambling apps and games with gatcha systems or loot boxes or games that have constant extra content you can unlock with microtransactions. so like. the most ethical choice app developers are often met with is putting ads in a game. believe me, most game devs dont want your UI constantly clustered with ads but the market has literally evolved in a way where that is the only thing you can still do without becoming entirely morally corrupt. that is the reason you often see ads hidden behind hints in a puzzle game or in situations where you have an actual choice to watch them
on another note: there is an alarming trend in pc games right now and while some people might be happy about it, you really shouldn't. genshin impact's extreme success is mostly due to the game being free to play. genshin impact is a game you would usually pay 60€ for, but it is completely free because it finances itself over it's gatcha system. for the average player, that gatcha system is almost harmless, if you want you might spend 5€ every once in a while, but won't be pressured into paying money to enjoy the game. i actually myself thought of the gatcha system as a means of financing the game as kind of harmless until i saw the stats of what people actually pay in this game. while most players might have spent between 0 - 50€ on the game, that is not what the game makes it's actual money with: gambling addicts and people who really want a rare, time-limited 5-star character spend thousands of dollars on a single banner, with extremes even cracking the ten-thousands. so while the average player might not at all pay for the game, genshin impact is disproportionately financed by exploiting people's addictions and driving them into debts for digital content that doesn't have any monetary worth
here is the very dangerous thing: if people now start to advocate that they don't want to pay 60€ for Breath of the Wild 2, because they got a similar game with constantly updating content and a massive world for free without the gatcha system feeling predatory to them, studios are put into a situation where they either see that success and want to make the same amount of money as genshin or don't want to do that but are met with more and more people being unwilling to pay full price for a game
smaller studio suffer unter the trends of big studios to go away from standard money-up-front models to unethical, exploitative models because the audiences that aren't the ones being exploited see these models as "better" than actually paying for a game, while big AAA studios usually don't have the moral backbone to stop these trends.
this trend also brings an entitlement to just get video games for free. i cannot stress how much WORK goes into making a video game and while we are always advocating to "pay artists" we don't seem to be holding video games to the same level of respect, even though we pay like 80€ for a commissioned 10h piece of art we get mad when a game that was in development for 2 years and had 80 people working on it isn't free to play. (if you think "who the fuck thinks like that" this might not be about you, but believe me there are enough people saying that every day)
so my message basically is: if you see a phone game or a computer game and you go "you want me to pay for that?", really question what the fuck you just thought

Just a tiny PSA for young people/ teens on Tumblr who might be new to a few things if this is one of their first social medias or if you're just new to it in general:
• Boycotting is done to stop a certain company from earning money, not denying yourself the ability to talk about what is made by said companies; you can still enjoy these things by pirating them or getting them via a means that means the developer isn't receiving royalties or pay from it. And, of course, simply talking about what you like will not grant them money. If you need help pirating, it's okay to ask a friend you trust who knows more about tech and downloading things.
• Callouts aren't going to always be honest and out of concern for safety. Just like irl, people can be petty and may have made it to create rumours for personal reasons; such as trying to get back at their ex or a friend who did something small but meaningful to them and to get back at that. People are people, offline or online, please be safe and aware that people lie.
• If you're a minor, please be careful about sharing your age, any photos or information about yourself, including even basic things. Actually, just in general be careful please.
• Discourse isn't always going to be about what's right or just, sometimes it's about winning an argument to a person on the other side of the screen. The best thing to do is not to argue and just block. I know that's hard sometimes, but they want engagement and they want your anger. With that, it also isn't always obvious when it's someone looking for a response. Sometimes they act polite at first. Be careful out there and it's always okay to block if you feel uncomfortable. And yes, even if you're just a little uncomfortable or they just don't seem quite right. You can always opt out and you're not doing anything wrong by setting boundaries.
• Always do your own research as well, don't just take what someone says on here at face value. I know, not everyone has bad motives, but it's important to still do what you can to stay informed. Sometimes people are just incorrect or haven't done their research fully either. It's always good to fact check!
• Just because someone is similar to you and has the same background experiences and identities, just as being a fellow queer or a woman or any other marginalised group, that doesn't necessarily mean they're trustworthy. People are people, and individuals are always capable of both good and bad. Please don't trust people based on identity and similarities. They can be petty too and they can definitely lie and abuse your trust. And not even for obvious reasons like abuse, but sometimes to tell rumours to get back at people or to just use you for whatever petty reason.
• Online links and adverts for protests aren't always doing to be honest or genuine. Some of them are scams and others are just badly organised. Please do research first before thinking of going to a protest and always make sure you have a friend with you and someone to help you in case of trouble. Preferably, make sure you have a safe support network to return to and people who can back you up financially and legally.
• Check the privacy settings on your apps, including Tumblr and especially places like Instagram and Twitter to make sure data isn't being misused by said apps without your consent.
• Be aware of reposters and AI generated images from people when you post your art online. Always make sure you date your work and, in cases where you're extra worried, add a watermark over your art.
• Use the mute/ filter tags option in settings to avoid topics that make you uncomfortable. You can also filter out nsfw tags as well there.
• Vapes are not only unhealthy and worse than cigarettes, but they also find Israel's genocide. Use gum instead or look into nicotine patches to stave off the craving. There are also helplines out there that can help.
• (This also relates to the above). Certain things are sometimes needed, such as straws for some disabled people, or sunscreen to avoid skin cancer. You're not a bad person for having needs and while some things do impact the environment, it's important to realise that you're one person with a need, not the cooperations burning fossil fuels. Please don't let people pressure you into getting rid of your own needs or making you guilty for them. This also does apply to addiction and if it's hard to quit, not to guilt yourself into feeling worse over it.
• Always ask for help, even if you aren't sure if you'll receive it. If someone is making you uncomfortable, tell. Offline or online, always say when something is wrong and find an adult or close friend (irl) you trust and tell them what's going on. Yes venting to online friends can be helpful, but if you feel in danger, please tell someone in your life offline who can support you.
• If you ever feel like the events in the world are too much, you're not a bad person for switching off and taking time for yourself. I don't mean this in a condescending way but as someone who was a teen who did this exact thing; there are people out there doing the work, adults with support and years of experience for dealing with this sort of stress. As much as it may feel bearable now, it can become overwhelming over time and you can definitely end up in really bad places mentally without realising and thinking you're doing fine. Take time away and please don't doom scroll. Adults are out there and able to handle this, please give yourself time to grow before launching into the world of activism. Preserve your energy and your mental health.
And that's all I can think of right now! Please stay safe out there folks and remember to let yourself enjoy being a kid, a teen and being young. You have all the time in the world ahead of you.

𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝖋𝖚𝖘𝖍𝖎𝖌𝖚𝖗𝖔 𝖙𝖔𝖏𝖎, 𝖌𝖔𝖏𝖔 𝖘𝖆𝖙𝖔𝖗𝖚, 𝖆𝖓𝖉 𝖓𝖆𝖓𝖆𝖒𝖎 𝖐𝖊𝖓𝖙𝖔
𝖜𝖔𝖗𝖉 𝖈𝖔𝖚𝖓𝖙: 1.4K words
𝖘𝖚𝖒𝖒𝖆𝖗𝖞: how toji, satoru and kento would act as your best friend
Tumblr media
GOJO SATORU
- Gojo may not be very loyal as your boyfriend, but he would definitely be one among your most loyal friends.
- Whenever you're sitting down at some place, literally anywhere, be it at a cafe or on some random stone ledge, he'll let you lean back into him.
- Gojo is tall, and he's somehow always so warm, so treating him as a platonic cuddle buddy would be so nice.
- So imagine you're exhausted from a long day and you find this stout little ledge to rest on. Gojo would sit down with you there.
- You could lean onto him, press your head into his shoulder and Gojo would actually feel very relaxed to have someone he trusts and holds dear next to him.
- Knowing that one of his closest friends is safe calms him to an impossible degree. He knows he's lost too many already.
- And if the day has been too long, he'll let you sleep on his shoulder. Let you enjoy having a little power nap while ignoring the little line of drool that will wet his uniform.
- Hip to hip, your head to his shoulder, it does not feel as romantically intimate as it could be, but he loves that you're here with him all the same. He's always been scared of losing his friends, no matter how well he hides it.
- So he'll keep you warm as you nap on his shoulder.
- PARTING FROM OUR ANGSTIER PARTS... Gojo would be the best hype-man.
- You wearing a dress that barely reaches your knees and flaunts your ass whenever you jump? He'll cheer for you and scream, "THAT'S MY HOT BESTIE!!!"
- You have a crush on some dude? Some gal? He'll get very close with that guy or gal and tell them all the good things about you.
- If you like someone from the school it'll be even worse for you. He would blatantly skip missions just to set your crush up with you as your partner.
- Gojo would be a great, awesome, amazing BFF and you cannot tell me otherwise.
Tumblr media
NANAMI KENTO
- Nanami as your friend would just be. Aw.
- He would be the most attentive friend out there.
- You just come back from a mission, hair and clothes a mess, face streaked with blood? He'll let you use his handkerchief to wipe the mess off. And he'll fetch some bandages for you if you need it.
- If you're bed-ridden, he'll stay by your bedside and talk to you there. Silence with him is also just... so nice. So peaceful. So serene.
- Nanami would even make you coffee, tea, whatever it is you like just so he can help you feel more refreshed after whatever tiring mission you went on, or whatever complicated job it was you had to finish.
- He knows what your favorite drink is. What your favorite food is. He also knows the best place to find both.
- Will eat lunch together with you every day at the school, or at yours or his favorite restaurant.
- He can't really make food for you... so he always buys something for lunches at the school with you.
- Sometimes he'll just stand in front of one of the school vending machines, in undeniably deep thought about what your drink of the day could be.
- Whenever he visits your favorite coffee shop, or whatever place sells your favorite drink, he'll ask the cashier to add the specific extras you like incorporating into your drink. He knows all of them.
- AND OKAY. LISTEN. NANAMI WOULD TOTALLY CALL YOU AT THREE A.M. TO RANT ABOUT WORK.
- Of course he would first say something along the lines of, "I must apologize for bothering you. I promise to buy you (insert fav. drink) and (insert fav. food) and (insert fav. dessert) tomorrow. Promise." Then he finally reveals how stressed he is, "But. Are you aware of how much I want to wring Gojo Satoru's neck and kick him off a cliff?"
- It would turn into some sort of comedy, where Nanami mocks every single person who has stressed him out (Gojo Satoru for once in your life just STFU) in that sonorous, baritone rumble of his.
- Imagine hearing something like that at three in the morning. Sometimes it makes you question why it is no one has asked the guy out yet. (AND WHY YOU HAVEN'T DONE THAT EITHER.)
- Nanami would also be the BEST listener.
- You have a problem with something? With someone? Okay. He'll hear you out. Will not interrupt you while you're speaking. Not once will he do that.
- If it's something serious, and you start sniffling or maybe even crying, okay let's be honest he wouldn't really know what to do...
- SO. Because he doesn't know, he'll do what he sees everyone else do.
- He'll hug you. His arms will be stiff and that deep pit of awkwardness will definitely form in his stomach, but if it helps you, he'll do it all the same.
- If this is your first time crying in front of him, he'll only pull out one of his handkerchiefs and hand it to you. Sorry, but he wouldn't know how else to comfort you.
- He'll also comfort you with words of logic. Nanami has that perspicacious outsider's perspective that lets him see the rational portion of everything.
- BUT HE WOULD ALSO BE SO UNDERSTANDING. If you voice that you think your feelings are stupid, or dumb, he would FIRMLY insist that no, no (Y/N), your feelings are not stupid. Your feelings matter to me. And nothing that matters to me is "stupid."
- And he would proceed to help you find a solution to your problem, or would just hear you out some more. You can be honest with him and he would not judge you for any of your feelings.
- In conclusion, Nanami Kento would be the most caring BFF out there.
Tumblr media
FUSHIGURO TOJI
- Okay HEAR ME OUT ON THIS. HEAR ME OUT.
- Toji would be an AWESOME best friend.
- He would be the guy you could punch in the arm with abandon.
- Toji would ALSO be the mean tease of a friend who is able to bed you at least once.
- After getting you in his bed though he'll let you go back to the casual thing you share, if that's what you want. But if you want to be together, well... he would be willing to try, but only because you're his friend.
- It may or may not work out. But he does try to make it work. Whether it does in the end... depends.
- MOVING FORWARD, again, Toji would be the friend you could punch without being hit back for it. He'll just be like yeah, okay short stuff then move on.
- He's just someone you could debate with, have fun with, and tease and test to no end.
- AND TOJI is the type of guy who would be super casual about letting people stay over at his house. You had a tiring day? You want to crash at his house? He'll let you.
- You open his door and he'll look at you like he was expecting you, but maybe that's because you'd just ranted about how someone at work had treated you like shit.
- You know. Through the private messaging app only assassins like him use. But since you're his bestie he let you download it too.
- HE CALLS YOU EVERY SINGLE PET NAME OUT THERE TOO
- And he always greets you with, "Something wrong, short stuff?" when you come through the door
- AND HE WOULD EVEN CALL YOU "PRINCESS" WHEN HE REALLY FEELS LIKE PUSHING IT
- And listen bitch even if you're tall... this asshole is literally as tall as Gojo (I think?????) AND he's a DILF. So shut your mouth, short stuff.
- At his house you can either: 1. Order take-out and eat together on the dingy old table someone's great-grandfather used to eat on; he might pay if you really aren't feeling it but he's also an avaricious, money-hoarding bitch (in other words, broke) soooo don't expect much. Or 2. Just sleep on his couch while he watches TV. His bed smells like shit and really his couch isn't any better buuutt at least it doesn't have... stains.
- And please, don't even think about venting your feelings to this guy. He would either laugh his ass off at you or only nod with a tight smile of discomfort on his face.
- Princess, he won't be tucking you into bed, but he'll definitely have some leftover pizza ready for you in the morning. His love language is lazy as hell, but it's love all the same.
- Though your pizza will most definitely be either burnt or cold as shit.
- But either way, he cares.
- So if you're feeling down because someone looked at you wrong in the streets, expect to see a "Missing Person's Report" on the news in the morning.

I have two episodes left in the Elis James and John Robins Radio X show. Here are some thoughts I have about the latest episodes. The beginning of the post contains music recommendations that I got from those episodes, and that music is a lot more interesting than my ramblings about radio, so while I don't really recommend reading this whole post, you should click on the "keep reading" link if you like nice music, and then stop after the Bandcamp links end.
That radio show has this thing called the Keep It Session Sessions, where at the end of the podcast episode, they spend about six minutes telling us about a band or musician they like that they couldn’t play on the actual show (due it not being in the Radio X catalogue), but they want to share it with their audience anyway, so they tell us about it and then play a 30-second clip (as much as they can without running into copyright issues). It’s quite cool, and I’ve liked a lot of the stuff they’ve played, which makes me now wish I’d saved more of it. There were a bunch of songs that I liked in the moment but didn’t bother to write down.
There are only a few things I've liked so much that I did take the time to go download them. One is an extremely weird song called Horseleg Swastikas by Silver Jews, which I almost didn't mention in this post because the title sure doesn't sound great, but it also has nothing to do with the song. The song, it turns out, is just a really good thing to listen to if it's 11 PM on a Saturday night and you're trying not to drink alcohol.
youtube
The other thing I've downloaded is by a guy they call The Lovely Robin on the show, because he's John Robins' best friend, and for a long time they'd told amusing stories about him and just vaguely mentioned he was a musician. Then one day they played some of his music on the Keep It Session Sessions, and it was beautiful, and I started listening to his stuff on SoundClound and YouTube for, probably, way too long before going to his Bandcamp page and giving him some money for it. Which I did a few weeks ago, bought three of his albums, have enjoyed all three of them in different ways, plus a few of his songs have quickly moved near the top of the list of best songs to play for this kid at work who likes music, so I've spent extra time listening to his stuff because of that. He has quite a range, but I think my favourite album of the ones I've heard by him is Above the Dreamer's Head. So that's a good place to start, if anyone's interested in music by John Robins' best friend. I haven't written about his music before, and in fact even hesitate to type out his full name here, because it turns out writing someone's name on the internet can sometimes work like a summoning charm. But here's a link to where you can listen to his stuff for free on YouTube, and here's his Bandcamp page where you can pay him for his music if you like it. It's good.
He also has a Tumblr account where he writes insightful things that I've found interesting to read, but that is just way too close to here so we'll try not to think about that.
Anyway, I've just found a third musical thing I wanted from the Keep It Sessions Sessions, and it was from their third-last episode, number 262 of 264. To be honest, they are running out of steam a bit as they get to the end of this run. Which is why I quite enjoy that they've given me a new takeaway even at this late stage.
This time it's a friend of Elis James', and I can't say all that much about him yet because I just discovered him about five hours ago when I heard them play his stuff at the end of the podcast episode, but I've gone and bought and listened to two albums. His name is Rhodri 'Ratatosk' Viney, he has music on Bandcamp here, and it's very pretty. I've heard John Robins and Elis James describe a lot of music as "folk", some of which I would not agree with them on that classification (I do understand the pointlessness of gatekeeping folk music, but someone's got to do it, or else we end up with Bon Iver at folk festivals), but this one is just a bunch of really lovely and captivating folk music. I might give it to my dad.
Elis James once said, about 100 episodes ago, "My version of The Lovely Robin is a man named Rhodri." And then never expanded on that, until this, the third-last episode of the whole radio show, when he plays us 30 seconds of the music and it's fucking perfect. How did Elis James go 261 episodes without telling us that he has a close friend who makes perfect music? I was annoyed enough at John for going quite a few episodes telling us pub stories about "The Lovely Robin" without emphasizing enough how great his music is, until they finally played it on the Keep It Session Sessions one day. But at least he didn't wait years.
Anyway, the man named Rhodri makes nice music, and sometimes he sings in Welsh, which is very very pretty. I worry it's borderline patronizing how pretty I find the Welsh language, like my brain problematically reduces it to mystical fairy talk - when, as Elis James keeps reminding us, it is a regular non-dead language spoken by regular non-dead people about regular things. To be fair, in these specific songs, this guy is definitely going for mystical fairy vibes overall, so I hope it's fair if I think Welsh lyrics contribute to that. But I will admit that I find it melodic and pretty even when I hear Elis James speak in Welsh, even though the subtitles tell me he's just doing quite run-of-the-mill observational stand-up.
I have to say it's been a weird end to the radio show (up to my current point, I still have two episodes left). I took a break for a few weeks and then picked it up from episode 251, at the very end of 2018, with 14 episodes left to go. They've been odd episodes, especially coming off the high that they were on with the excitement of their book and tour in fall 2018, and a big live episode for 250. The energy fell off a cliff pretty sharply after that, as Elis missed a few episodes with Isy Suttie being sick in the hospital while heavily pregnant, and John Robins tried to quite vaping and spent a couple episodes in nicotine withdrawal that put him in a terrible mood. Elis came back for a week but immediately disappeared again because his kid was born, then came back and seemed fairly out of it for a couple of months. Which is, you know, the right thing to do. If you have a newborn baby that born early from a pregnancy with complications near the end, you should definitely miss some work and then spend a bunch of time seeming to not care that much about non-family things. If you continue to care about other things as much as you did before that happened, then you're not a great parent/partner/person. And I'm sure Elis James is a lovely parent/partner/person. But it did make for some fairly half-hearted radio for a while.
Most of the show's humour comes from the carefully crafted dynamic between two people who've been fitting this together for years. There's a balance between the two of them that relies on John Robins caring too much about some (most) things and being amusingly aloof about others, and Elis caring too much about many things and being amusingly disintrested-but-plays-along-due-to-the-rules-of-the-double-act about others, and they're interested in a lot of the same things and that creates fun energy, but there's a clear list of things where they differ and that creates pushback that is also funny. And there's lots of comedy from the weird status balance, Elis being objectively more successful but almost absurdly deferential to John anyway. And you have humour from the balance of moods, with The Darkness of Robins vs. The Lightness of Elis.
All of those things are thrown off if Elis James suddenly decides to start living in the real world, where none of this is actually a big deal. It is funny when Elis James broadcasts while distracted, but only if he's distracted by football and immediately admits to that - not so much if he seems like he's trying to a facsimile of his usual self but just doesn't care enough to manage it. And it doesn't help that at the same time, John Robins was oscillating wildly between episodes where he was in a terrible mood due to attempted nicotine quitting (seems to be an off and on effort), and an uncharacteristically lighthearted mood because in the middle of all this he proposed to his girlfriend, which of course is great for the mood because that's a very good idea after less than a year. So there's a while where they've weirdly switched places, mood-wise, with Elis James worried about his son and John Robins happy about intent to get married, and it turns out there's a reason they doled out roles the way they did at the beginning. It doesn't work so well the other way. As they say, the vibe is off.
I suppose at some point they must have known that the show's ending. They haven't mentioned it on air so far and I don't know when they audience was told, but I suppose they could both be phoning it in a touch if they know it's not going to last that much longer anyway.
There were a couple of episodes early in 2019 where Tim Key sat in for Elis James, though, and he was perfect. Absolutely excellent, cut John Robins to pieces while barely breaking a sweat, everything you want from Tim Key.
It hasn't been terrible or anything. I'm comparing this to the quite high bar they set in previous episodes, and even in these last few where it's wavering, there have still been plenty of strong moments. I still don't want it to end, and have been intentionally drawing it out to avoid getting to the end, mainly by continuing my side project of listening to/watching all of John Robins' guest spots on other shows that I can find, alongside the chronology of the radio show. He did Hypothetical and Ultimate Worrier in 2019, which aired later in the year but were recorded in those first few months, so I re-watched his episodes of those. Ultimate Worrier was a bit sad to re-visit just because it seems like the epitome of what I don't like that happened to Jon Richardson, taking everything interesting about him and reducing it to its broadest points packaged into a painfully neat little cardigan as though that's all he ever was. I was also reminded of that shit celebrity feature on Hypothetical, though besides that, I think Hypothetical was a good show. And was starting to really find its feet just before it got canceled. But I suppose four seasons is too long to take to do that.
This was my first time watching Hypothetical after listening to Do the Right Thing, and on a re-watch I can confirm - yeah, they stole it. I mean, Danielle Ward doesn't own a patent on the fairly broad idea of imagining what to do in hypothetical scenarios, but it was fair for her to argue that she should at least have some claim on the concept of having comedians do it for various rounds on a panel show for one person who hands out scenarios and another who hands out points. They're quite similar.
I also can't believe I saw John Robins on Hypothetical a few years ago, and still managed to dislike him until late 2022 when I watched his stand-up. I'd already decided I disliked him because he was such a dick on Mock the Week, and because I was already biased against him, I continued to dislike him on the rare occasions when I saw him on shows after that. I do remember finding him annoying on Hypothetical. But on a re-watch, he was very funny. And gave one of the best, most well thought through and comprehensive answers in the first round that they've ever had, I think. I was also reminded of how great Cariad Lloyd is, which I already knew and never doubted and she has nothing to do with this post (aside from having appeared on Hypothetical with John Robins in 2019), I just wanted to mention it.
I've also added a bit to my Robins audio guest spot folder. In one radio episode from early 2019, he mentioned recording Nick Helm's Fubar Radio podcast, so I tracked that down and listened to it. It was quite funny, and fun to hear them chat about shared and non-shared obsessions over different music and movies. During that one, John mentioned he'd also been on Peacock and Gamble's thing on Fubar Radio, which I'd completely missed in my initial gathering of files for my folder. I found that one too, and it turns out he went on there with Sara Pascoe in 2014. So I have that one saved too now, but I think I'll listen to it after I finish the last couple of Radio X episodes.
I've also decided what I'm going to do immediately after I finish those. During one of the 2019 Radio X episodes, Elis mentioned that Isy and her ex-boyfriend, whose name we definitely don't know because she's almost as good at disguising identities as Richard Gadd is (too soon for that joke?), used to go to Tom Waits shows together. And I said yes, I know that, Elis, please don't remind me of that. Isy has a song about how her ex ruined Tom Waits for her by having sex with her to his music, but now because of that, both of those people have ruined Tom Waits for me as well, because I cannot hear Tom Waits' name without thinking of Isy Suttie and a man I know too much about having sex in 2002. I like that guy very much but I don't want to picture him having sex in 2002 or in any other year.
However, Elis bringing that up did remind me that I've been meaning for a while to get to Isy Suttie's book, The Actual One, where I believe she expands on some of the stories I've heard her tell in her stand-up/radio show/podcast. And that are enjoyable stories, even if they do occasionally ruin an American singer for me. So I'd like to hear more of them and this seems like a good time.
I've procured a copy of the audiobook to The Actual One, and I'm going to listen to that after I finish the Radio X episodes. Then... I don't know if I'll jump right into the BBC shows. Not sure where I'll go. Maybe shoot for the opposite of a radio show where two guys were starting to grow up and possibly grow out of their old and immature dynamic - if I enjoy the Robins/Pascoe episode of Peacock and Gamble enough, I do still have the Peacock and Gamble Podcast saved from where I left off, seven episodes into it. That would be going back to 2009, comfortably far enough into the past to be before anyone started growing out of anything. Though if I do get into that show properly, the completist in me would probably have to go back even earlier, and start with the Ray Peacock Podcast. I realize that one of the two Peacock and Gamble people did eventually grow up, but not until quite a while after 2009, at least. I'll see how things go.

Hi Chekhov! Really enjoying your white diamond au! I had a quick art question: How do you start comissions? I've been improving my drawing skills and thinking about drawing for others after having fun in artfight, but I don't know where to start? How much to charge, how to get paid, etc. Do you have any tips? Hope you're doing well! :)
Alright, since a few people have asked, I’ve decided to put together a few things about how to get started on commissions - what you need, what you should make, and how to keep things organized.
This will get a little long, so I’ll divide it into 4 main sections:
1) Draw Art - Getting started
2) Get Commissioned - Making a commission sheet, Advertising
3) ??? - Communicating, Setting Limits, Running the Business
4) Profit - Pricing Yourself and Getting Paid
* Disclaimer: I’m an artist, so this How-To will be illustration-focused. I’m sure many of these tips can apply to ANY types of commissions, but I will be focusing on the type I know best. If you are proficient in other types of commissions for other types of art - music commissions, photography, etc - feel free to chime in and leave a comment or make your own tutorial!
Tumblr media
1) Draw Art
I think this is probably the most obvious part, but it needs to be said:
Before you start making art for other people, you must first be comfortable making art in general.
I’m not saying your art has to be Disney-quality, or industry-level! Not at all.
BUT! You must be comfortable creating what you sell. If you try to sell something you have little confidence in, you will stress yourself out and possibly end up losing time AND money.
Don’t shoot for the moon if you haven’t landed on it even once. Sell what you know you’re good at. Your commissions don’t HAVE to include full-body illustrations if you don’t know how to draw feet/solid stances. Limit yourself to what you can do.
Things you need to should probably have before starting commissions:
1. Access to art materials or a fully downloaded art program
DO NOT - Use a free tutorial version that will expire in a month and leave you without a way to draw! If you are having trouble finding a program, try free ones like MediBang Paint Pro.
2. Free time to complete the amount of commissions you want to take.
DO NOT - Take on or offer commissions if you KNOW you’re going to be overwhelmed with school or personal life for the next 2+ months. Pace yourself, otherwise you’ll burn out, get stressed, and get discouraged.
3. A reliable way to communicate with your customers like a commissions-only email
DO NOT - Use your friend/family/college email. It’s hard to keep track of things as it is, and creating new emails is easy and free. And keep it professional if you can! Not many people will reach out to dong-wiggles20434 to ask for a design. Ideally, your email should be close to your brand - however you want to brand yourself. Usernames are fine!)
DO NOT - Use Instagram/Twitter/Tumblr to collect commission info unless you are ready to do the organizing yourself. Some people make it work, but in my experience, if you use these SNS sites to communicate with friends and network... you’re going to be losing commission inquiries right and left and accidentally ignoring people. Email is much easier to organize and sort into folders.
4. A portfolio or at least 2-3 pieces of each type of art you’re planning to sell.
DO NOT - Advertise commissions without having any examples of the art you plan to sell. People will find it difficult to trust you if you can’t even give them a vague idea of what sort of drawing they’ll be getting.
Disclaimer: These are not hard ‘do not’s. If you have had a different experience, I respect that. I’m simplifying for the sake of streamlining this advice.
.
2) Get Commissioned
So - you have your art, you have your art program, and you’ve got all the time in the world. That means.... that’s right! It’s time to let the world know you’re taking commissions.
One of the most common ways artists signal to their audience that they can do commissions is by creating a commissions sheet. There are MANY ways to make this - and they range from simple and doodly ones to VERY complex designs. For example, here’s mine!
There are many ways to organize a commission sheet. At its core, a commission sheet should display the types of art you WANT to be commissioned to make. Let’s go over a few ways they can be done!
Tumblr media
#1.... Body Portion Dividers!
Tumblr media
This sheet is most common with those who want to capitalize on drawing people and characters. If you want to draw lots of characters, this is a great way to offer several tiers of pricing based on how much of their character your customers want to see.
#2... Complexity Scale
Tumblr media
If you’re open to drawing many things but want to base your pricing off of how complex something is, you can split your tiers into done-ness. This type of commission is popular with those that draw characters AND animals, furries, etc.
#3....  Style and Type
Tumblr media
If you’re more on the design side of things, or if you have various niche art styles that you can’t quite lump together, display a variety of your skills alongside each other! It helps if all the ones you have can be organized under a common customer - like those looking to advance their own business and get logos, websites, or mascots made for them!
.
3) ???
You got your first commission... what happens now???
Well, ideally you have the time, tools and motivation to make things happen! Now all you have to do is... sit down and... draw.......
I’m going to say something that may be a little controversial:
Commissions aren’t fun.
No, no, hear me out: I have fun doing commissions! I genuinely enjoy drawing characters and coming up with designs. But even with all that said, commissions are, first and foremost: WORK
I’m not saying this to discourage you, I’m saying this to keep things realistic. When I first began commissions, I thought it would be just like any other type of drawing. I would sit down, imagine a thing, draw it... it would be fun!
But then I realized that I couldn’t just draw what I wanted - another person had an idea in mind and had asked me to do it. I stressed over getting the design correct from descriptions. I stressed over not having the right reference for the pose the commissioner wanted. I stressed over not being able to draw the leg right in the way I had promised I would do. I stressed about billing. I stressed about digital money transfers. It was difficult, and time-consuming, and I did not enjoy it. At all.
Tumblr media
And a part of that is definitely on the commissioner - we, as artists, NEED to demand proper references or descriptions. We, as artists, NEED to limit the amount of changes we’re going to make at the flick of a finger. We NEED to demand clear instructions and set boundaries. That’s also super important.
But also - don’t be discouraged if you find yourself exhausted drawing your first commission. MANY artists go through this. Adjust your rules, fix up your limits, practice putting your foot down on finicky commissioners who expect you to read their mind! It does get easier, but you have to communicate and put in the effort and act as your own manager AND your own customer service AND your own accountant. That’s what you’re looking at.
Good limits and boundaries to set:
Limit the amount of changes a person can ask to make. “I want blue hair.” Next email: “No wait, yeah, make it red.” Next email: “Actually I changed my mind, can I get the blue but like, lighter?” Next email: “No, not that light.” ... At some point, we have to stop. I personally allow 2-3 changes on the final stages of a commission before I start refusing or start asking for extra money.
Demand clear instructions and/or references. If something isn’t described, you have to take artistic liberty and design it, but that’s difficult! And if the customer is not happy with it but can’t tell you more? That’s not your problem - the burden of reference is on THEM. You cannot read their mind, and that’s not your fault.
Get at least half the payment up front! This is a good balance between the ‘pay before art’ and the ‘pay after art’ conundrum that will limit the amount of woes between artist and customer. (I’ll touch upon this a little more in the Profit section.)
Organization:
Where possible, create good habits! Tag your emails and organize your folders. I have a tag on my emails for active and finished commissions. I also keep my emails on Unread until I have time to sit down and properly look at/reply to them.
My Commissions in the folder are also organized chronologically and I mark down which ones are paid and which ones are not.
Tumblr media
(I understand not everyone can do this, but if you want to give it a try, it does make things easier in the long run. Again, this advice is just what I have found personally helps.)
One last thing - I do not want to shame ANYONE for taking their time with commissions! Commissions are complex, and they take time and work. You can draw in 8 hours, but some things take research, materials, etc. Some illustrations realistically take up to half a year, or, depending on what’s involved, several years!!
THAT BEING SAID - it’s good manners to be upfront with your customers about how long you expect the commission to take. If you think you’re busy, just say that! Explain that you have a lot going on, and you will probably take (insert time period here).
And if your commissioners are worried, work out a system to keep them updated! I send my commissioners updates when I finish the lineart/flat colors/etc and I try to be clear about how long everything will take. I try to estimate with a +3-5 days buffer to give myself extra time... and recently I’ve been using it. Always say a bigger number than you think you’ll need.
If someone wants a rushed commission... make them pay more. If ANYONE wants a commission done ‘by the end of the week’ - that’s an automatic rush-job for me because I’m juggling an irl job and several commissions at once. I WILL charge a rush fee and I won’t feel bad about it.
If someone wants a commission within 24 hours...... Well, they better be paying you 3x your normal amount, or more. And remember - you CAN refuse! It’s perfectly reasonable to say ‘No, sorry, that sort of turnaround time is not realistic for me.’
Food For Thought - Invoicing
Many artists I’ve commissioned in the past have not used Invoicing, but I’ve recently begun to fill out invoices and file them in my Commissions folder just to keep track of things. It’s not necessary until you start getting into the Small Business side of Freelancing, but it’s not a bad idea to get into the habit early in case you might need to do it later for tax purposes.
Here’s what my Invoice looks like, for example.
Tumblr media
I’ve optimized it to help me remember who, what, and how much is involved! It also contains important info for my customers like where to send the money.
Which brings us to...
.
4) Profit
One of the hardest things for artists is pricing themselves. I’m not going to tell you which way is BEST - there is no BEST way, only the best way for YOU.
One of the options available to you is pricing by the hour. It includes averaging out how long it takes you to draw a specific type of art (whatever you’re offering as a commission) and multiplying that by an hourly wage you’ve decided on.
Tumblr media
When you do this, I stress - do NOT price yourself below minimum wage if you can help it. When you first start out, aim for the $15/hour mark and adjust accordingly.
Other ways to price your art:
- Per complexity: Portraits vs full body should be scaled based on how difficult you find one vs. the other. You can also easily decide on a price for a sketch and double it for lineart, triple it for full color, etc.
- Per type: Look up for industry prices for website design and logo design. They may surprise you! You don’t have to charge that much, but it helps to keep things in perspective.
It’s okay to change your prices! Keep your commission sheet image handy so you can update the amounts as you grow. :)
Payment up front or after completion?
Some artist take full payment up front. Some only demand payment after they’ve finished and sent out the piece. I personally think these are both risky for everyone involved.
I recommend doing at least HALF of the payment BEFORE you start the commission. Calculate your full price and ask for half before you start working on it in earnest, to make sure the person can actually pay you. Then, when they receive the full piece and are satisfied, they can complete the payment.
I personally work in this structure:
> Someone emails me with their idea/reference
> I send back a rough draft sketch that shows the idea/pose (only takes me 10-20 minutes so not a huge loss if they ghost) and quote them a price
> They can pay the full thing upfront OR pay half
> I finish the commission and send updates when I do the lineart/colors to double check anything so they have multiple chances to spot any errors
> If the person paid only half on completion, I send them a low-res version of the finished thing, they finish up their payment and THEN I send them the full-res version plus any other filetypes/CYMK proofs, etc.
Many of the people who commission me pay me up front even though I offer they pay half - and I’m really flattered that they trust me that much! Because of that, I feel encouraged to update them frequently and ask for their input as I work, so they have the peace of mind knowing I’m actually doing their commission.
Great, but how do I get PAID????
There are NUMEROUS ways - these days money is relatively easy to transfer over digital means, and you have a few options.
Tumblr media
Paypal is perhaps one of the oldest digital wallets and is geared towards businesses. By setting up a PayPal and connecting it to your debit card of bank account, you can tunnel a pathway from your online business directly into your hands in a matter of days.
Paypal also offers Invoicing - you make an invoice, price it and send it to the person’s email and they can pay whatever way they need! (It also allows partial payments.)
Pros: transfers from PayPal to bank account are free, and take a couple of business days. It also has no upper limit to the amount of money you can move in/out each month. It can force refunds due to the nature of its business-oriented payment system.
Cons: Because it’s used by businesses for larger transactions, PayPal may demand a more rigorous proof of your identity. It may also take longer to set up and be harder to get used to. I’ve also heard that they can be a hassle when it comes to closing your account.
Tumblr media
Venmo is another type of digital wallet that acts much like paypal, except for a few key differences - it is NOT made for businesses (so depending on whether you’re officially registered as a freelancer, you may not be able to use it). I personally don’t use venmo, so I cannot speak to its usefulness, but I know a few people that use it for casual transactions. It’s easy and quick! :)
Keep in mind that you cannot force a refund over venmo! The transactions are final.
There’s also CashApp, GooglePay (which could load gift cards but also allows peer-to-peer transactions) and I’ve heard good things about Due, though I’ve never personally used it.
Other ways to pay: I’ve had people pay me over Patreon by upping their pledge, and I’ve had people pay me over Ko-Fi by donating a specific amount.
Many people even use Etsy - the website specialized for independent small businesses selling art - by listing their commission sheet and offering up several ‘slots’ of commissions, which allows you to track taxes AND allows your clients to pay using whatever they feel comfortable with.
If you’re in Canada, you can even pay by emailing money directly from bank account to bank account - check whether your country offers this type of service! There’s no shortage of ways to move money in the digital world.
Just like everything else, there’s no singular ‘Best’ way. It just depends on what works for you.
I think that just about wraps it up! I can’t quite think of what else to put here - but I’m sure other artists will chime in with their own advice. :) I’m very sorry this became so long but I hope it was helpful!
Obligatory Disclaimer: I’m not qualified to give legal or accounting counsel. Please double-check the laws in your own country/state in regards to taxation of freelancing work and do your own research. If you are underage, DEFINITELY get an adult’s permission before you start doing commissions, and have the adult help you through the process.

do you pay for any subscription services? or just old school torrent pirating?
I've bummed Netflix from my high school best friend since they legit sent DVDs in the mail and I will 'til I die or until Netflix/him physically stop me. I don't care. That's just how it is. I refuse to alter the status quo lol.
Amazon Prime comes with my Prime account and that's the only reason I have it. I've watched something on there maybe...five times??? Look, we can argue about Daddy Bezos all day long but I've been in quarantine for two years. I legitimately can't fucking go to the grocery store or stores in general because of my health issues. I need to get my groceries and everything else I need delivered to my doorstep. I have to boop beep boop them on Amazon. That's just how it is. Sometimes evil overlords are what keep you alive. It's either them or Walmart and Walmart doesn't have half the options that Amazon does. The Waltons are also billionaires. It's all going to billionaires anyway. I choose to give it to the most convenient billionaire of the two.
I used to also have Hulu but that was only because it came included for free in my Sprint phone account but I switched out of Sprint last year so I don't have Hulu anymore.
The only standalone streamer that I go out of my way to outright PAY for every month is Discovery+ lol. So fucking random, I know. But I'm a WHORE for The Food Network. When I lost Hulu I needed to get my Food Network fix somewhere so now I pay the $4.99 for Discovery+. It comes with like nine other channels that I never watch. I'm just there for my cooking shows lol.
There's nothing my VPN and torrents can't cover so why would I pay for streamers? This new generation has to learn you don't need to give Disney your money to enjoy their content...I got my Kate and Yelena fix just fine and never gave them a cent. Do you maybe have to wait an extra hour or two? Sure. Wow. How hard must your life be! Go for a walk while the torrent gets uploaded/downloads. You won't lose a limb. I promise.

Im more excited about the In The Heights movie than the Hamilton movie.
Here's why:
It's obvious to me that the Hamilton film is another cash grab for Disney. To put it simply, they're putting far less effort into it than Warner Bros is with In the Heights.
By filming a live action version of the Hamilton Broadway production, they are deciding to not produce a genuine film adaptation of it, which would take more time and cost more money.
Look at their trailers!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
From the very first shot we see the difference.
In the Heights has an animated long shot following two children through a bustling street, with tons of extras and a clear setting. The Hamilton one has a bird's eye view of what I think is "The Room Where it Happens", which is hard to see and lasts for a second.
I immideately get a feeling of warmth and excitement from the In the Heights shot. But the Hamilton one gives me nothing to feel, as a viewer.
Is it wonderful to be able to see close ups of the Broadway cast as they preform in a way you can't in person? Yes, absolutely. I'm not mad about that. There should 100% be more musical films. It's impossible for everyone to pay hundreds to thousands per ticket to see a musical on Broadway. It can take $10-25 for a ticket to the movies or a DVD/download. If you want people to become interested musical theatre, it has to become accessable to the masses. Otherwise the artform will die.
But if you're going to do it, why would you half ass it?
How many more people are more likely to see In the Heights because it genuinely looks like a movie? But Hamilton looks like a musical, and so those who aren't interested in musical theatre will write it off.
I want to actually see the battlefield during the Battle of Yorktown. I want to watch them argue in the middle of a stuffy courthouse in the Cabinet Battles. I want it to look and feel like we're in colonial America, ready to start a revolution. I want to see Hamilton bleed.
And it's not just a lack of imagination on my part. I have actually seen Hamilton preformed on Chicago Broadway, and it was wonderful. I cried many times. But when it comes to a film adaptation, from the biggest film company in America (the world?), it's just not what I expected or wanted.
"Well, what do you want op?" I want what In the Heights did! They have taken the musical and put it into a movie format that is pleasing to the eye and enticing to the people. I want a full production with casting, reshoots, and sets. Does this mean the Hamilton movie would have a different cast than the OBC? Yes. But that's okay! We can like multiple characterizations.
Why did Disney do this?
Tumblr media
Time is money. Production is money. Sets and costumes and casting and crew all takes money. But using a filmed session from several years ago? That just costs royalties. And man, did they pay A LOT for those royalties.
I was unable to locate a budget for the Hamilton movie, but Disney spent $75 million on the royalties alone. If their entire budget was $100 million, then they are spending 3/4s of it just on the right to make it. That leaves very little for a production stand point. So they make it as cheap as possible and pump it out asap; so they can get their cash back.
You could say that they didn't make a proper film adaptation because they don't want to deal with Hamilton's nonstop lyrics throughout the film. In the Heights has dialogue in between songs; Hamilton's entire show is sung or rapped.
However, we have Les Misérables. The film has a 69 (nice) on Rotten Tomatoes and made $441.8 million worldwide, with a budget of $61 million. So, from a money standpoint, it was a huge success. And most of the critical responses I remember from the film were due to personal taste and commenting on actors singing ability.
And Hamilton is (arguably) the most successful and influential Broadway musical of recent history. Even people who don't know about musicals have a small idea about Hamilton. So it's going to make money.
They know it's going to make money, but they want to do it the cheapest way possible. I know other musicals have been filmed in this fashion and the film adaptation concept is newer in comparison. But damn Disney. Can you even pretend like you're trying?
I'm still going to see the Hamilton film, and I'm still going to enjoy it. But I know the In the Heights film is going to be far more impactful within pop culture. I feel like Warner Bros has made the good choice here and Disney once again fell flat.
EDIT: Y'all really hated this one, huh? So, here's the thing. When I wrote this, it was late at night and I was drunk. So I didn't fact check to see if the show was ever going to be a film adaptation or if they always planned it to be a pro shoot.
Apparently they always planned it to be this way; good for them. I still have the same opinion: I'm more excited for In the Heights than Hamilton because ItH is an actual production. I'm a filmmaker, not a thespian. My interest is different than yours. That's ok.
I still believe the general public would react more positively and be more interested in a film adaptation. A pro shoot is more interesting to theater nerds. Again, that's okay.
As the pro shoot was filmed in 2016, the footage always existed. If I were in charge of production, I would've made a film adaptation and then had the pro shoot be bonus footage for the DVD. Best of both worlds! I'm sure they'll do a reboot or remaster in a couple years where they actually do a film adaptation for Hamilton. And that would be cool as hell. And then Lin and Disney will get money for the same content twice.
I'm not going to reply to anyone's comments or reblogs anymore, as some of y'all argue just to argue. Sorry I went off on the anti-capitalist argument; I should've focused more on my own opinion: I will enjoy In the Heights more, as a film.
Pls stop talking about this now. Thnx.
