Saiki Kusuo was the unhappiest boy in the world. Until you.
Saiki met you completely by accident. A strange occurrence for him, to be honest. He usually anticipated everything, down to every nudge of his glasses. Not you. He could never have seen you coming. His feelings didn't hit him like a truck, he didn't spend days on end thinking about you and grumbling about his irritation that you had gotten under his extremely thick skin in a matter of two and one third minutes, thank you very much.
He was completely unfazed and everything was normal.
He was staring at you out of rage. ‘I am. I don't like them. They suck. I hate them. They make me angry.’  He kept repeating that all throughout the day. Maybe at one point he’d accidentally told you telepathically, because you came up to him out of the blue.
‘How didn't I know they’d do this?! What a pain.’
That was the other thing he “hated” about you. He always seemed to block out your thoughts. You had thoughts, but he got mad and made sure he couldn't hear them. (He misses them a bit. They were nicer to listen to than classes and Kaido.)
But, you’d come up to him. And you were upset.
“Hey,” you started.
‘Hi.’
“Are you nice to anyone at this school?”
He never answered.
He thought about it that night.
‘Why would I be? Everyone at PK’s annoying.’
He didn't sleep.
The next day, you were talking to Nendo. You were entranced. And, of course, he walked right by, ignoring both of you. He also ignored your conversation about him. He didn't want to hear it. (He should've listened.)
A week later, school was almost over. You were friends at that point, if you called tagging along whenever Kaido and Nendo pulled you out for a day. He’d admitted he found comfort in your less… moron-esque personality. You were still more prone to adventure than he was, but respected his space.
Your sleep schedule was very sporadic, though. Often you fell asleep on a bus or train ride. If it was late in the day Saiki thought you looked like an angel. Even prettier than Teruhashi.
Not for long though, you always woke up. You almost thought you saw him smiling one time.
Summertime was here! The days were longer, golden hour was more prevalent, the sunrises were lovely, everything was calm. Most families had gone on vacation, leaving a few people in the area alone to hang out by themselves. That’s how you found yourself playing old video games with Saiki, when it was too hot to go outside. Otherwise you’d be outside, but you’d almost gotten a sunburn walking to his house.
The fan placed haphazardly in the corner of his room blew cool air over you, sending goosebumps along your arms. You regretted not bringing a sweater, Saiki’s room was always so cold.
‘Want one of mine? My mom made most of them and I never wear them anyways.’ He suggested, his eyes not straying from the screen.
“Nah, I’m probably gonna go home for lunch and do summer homework for a while anyways.”
‘Mm.’
You two sat in peaceful quiet, and you ended up leaving as the sun was setting.
‘So much for homework, huh?’ He smirked, and you rolled your eyes.
“Oh please, you love my company,” you laughed, strolling off into the street. He waved after you, then pulled his hand down and slammed the door immediately. He never waved anyone goodbye. Least of all you!
‘Good grief, its the second week of summer and I’m already back to the same dilemma as before.’
He made himself dinner.
He didn't sleep, but you did. You dreamed about a lazy day with him. In your dream, he noticed how his dream version seemed less tense. Dream Saiki’s shoulders were slumped, and he let Dream you know about his thoughts. His complaints, which were surprisingly close to his real life ones. At the end of your dream (your wonderful perfect dream he wanted to live), Dream Saiki took off his glasses and devices, held your dream face and looked in your dream eyes...
Then Real Saiki fell asleep.
He always dreamed about nothing. He never dreamed about anything, because most dreams he could come up with while he was awake and so he stopped having them. But that night, his dream was vibrant. You laughed loudly, you held his hands, you looked at him, you felt him, you saw him, you loved him so much and he… stared.
Like always.
Halfway through his dream, he started crying. He’d never cried before. He didn't like it. Maybe he did. It felt good to prove he wasn't stone cold. That he had feelings. They were real. He hated the weird choking feeling though. He felt weak.
Then Dream Saiki let himself cry really really hard.
He woke up with stiff, itchy streaks drawn down his cheeks from the sides of his eyes. He scratched them and nothing happened. Then he sat up and got water to wet his throat.
As he ate breakfast, he tried to remember the ending of his dream. Nothing. Dreams are pointless anyway, he didn't need to know.
Real life you showed up at his door around eleven in the morning, completely soaked. It was hot day, but it was raining. The air smelled like wet, hot pavement, and soggy bushes. It was thick from the moisture, sticking hair to your foreheads.
He swung the door closed as you removed your raincoat, peeling it like a second skin. He took it and tossed it over a chair to dry.
As the sun came out from behind the clouds, Saiki’s living room was bathed in soft yellow light. He froze, it was exactly like his dream. Of course it had been a premonition, and of course it seemed too impossible to be anything but a dream. He glanced over at you, your eyes seemed to be fluttering shut. You slumped over onto his shoulder.
At this point the TV had been completely disregarded, Saiki’s gaze was focused entirely on you. It probably looked very creepy, but he didn't care.
You woke up when he shifted to move you, blinking as the light filled your eyes.
You looked at him.
His face was completely blank.
‘Sorry,’ he said quietly. He sighed.
“S’okay. I like being awake better than sleeping anyways,” you hummed.
He never figured out what that meant .

Colours of Summer
Karmagisa Week 2021 day 7 prompt: colours wordcount: 2418
basically: a collection of short scenes occuring on one hot summer day with Karmagisa, based on colours and summer objects. (might be extended some time after Karmagisa week, on AO3)
---------------------------------------- --Pink Swimming Trunks--
“What. is. that?” Karma uttered.
Nagisa sighed in response, turning a little red in the face, but hiding most of his embarrassment by avoiding eye contact. The object of embarrassment? the soft pink swimming trunks he was now wearing. Karma had never seen his boyfriend wearing them, and he didn’t think Nagisa ever would. Nagisa had a bad relationship with the colour pink.
“T-they’re supposed to be white,” Nagisa explained, “My mom washed them but accidentally mixed some laundry and-”
“You’re kidding me,” Karma started laughing, “What kind of cliched tv trope shit is this?”
Nagisa didn’t respond to that, instead walked past his boyfriend to put on the white shirt he’d brought for himself. Karma did the same, not wishing to travel all the way to the beach shirtless, but he was still laughing as he did so. At least he tried to do it quietly.
Eventually, he had enough of their silence. He turned to his boyfriend again, who was now putting food into their bag, and walked up to him. He threw his arms around him, hugging him from the back, and rested his chin on his head. The height difference made this a very simple gesture for him. Although, he was sure Nagisa wasn’t that big of a fan of the reminder that he was small.
“Pink still looks good on you,” Karma said, as a form of apology.
At first, Nagisa didn’t say anything. He just stood there accepting the embrace. Eventually there was a sigh, a shuffling of shoulders, and a soft humm. Karma knew that pretty much meant forgiveness. Still, he kept the other boy in his embrace. Well, with Karma’s superior power it was also a bit like a form of restraining the smaller boy.
“Come on,” Karma finally said, “We have a hot summer’s day to waste.”
--Blue Water--
Nagisa had been standing on the edge of the water for a while now, hesitating going in. Every once in a while, he stuck his leg out when the high tide came close enough to him, carefully trying out the water’s temperature. Every single time, he shrunk together slightly, and moved back a few small steps. Karma was getting a little sick of waiting.
“Can you come in already?” He complained, “the water is really nice once you actually get used to it.”
A difficult look appeared on Nagisa’s face. It appeared he was considering his options. Really, there wasn’t much to consider. They’d traveled all this way to have a fun beach day, at some point Nagisa would have to get in the water. Stalling it would only make it worse. For someone who complained so much about the hot weather, Nagisa sure was being petty about a little cold water. He should just get in and feel refreshed.
Karma looked over his shoulder, taking in the view of the sea stretching all the way to the horizon. The blue sea was shimmering, reflecting the sun’s light, and shining in Karma’s eyes. When he turned around there was no sun irritatingly blinding him. Instead, he saw Nagisa once again jumping away from the water.
“If you don’t get in now, I’m going to drag you in here myself,” Karma threatened.
Nagisa pursed his lips, looked down at the water, and took a moment to consider the threat. Of course, Karma knew he was serious, but he figured Nagisa knew it too. This was the kind of action Karma was very prone to: annoying and physical. Still, Nagisa was one of the few people capable of escaping these situations. Basically, he could ‘cute’ his way out of it. Karma was always a little weak to his boyfriend’s charms. So, Nagisa just stood there. He didn’t make any move indicating he was going to get in the water.
Karma looked him in the eye, trying to send him a warning glare. Nagisa, in response, just put a slight smile on his face. There was no denying for Karma that Nagisa looked pretty and soft right there, however, there was also no denying Nagisa just had to get in the damn water.
“Do I need to count down?” Karma asked, as if he was talking to a toddler.
Nagisa rolled his eyes. “I’m not eight.”
For a second, Karma considered his next comment. He decided to not go for the comeback, trying to somewhat stay on his boyfriend’s good side. Then again, if he did really drag Nagisa into the water, that would be ruined anyways. To be fair, that would be laughed off. A comment about Nagisa perhaps looking like an eight year old was something Nagisa was a little more sensitive about.
“3” Karma started counting.
Nagisa squinted for a second, but then crossed his arms, standing by his decision to annoy Karma, apparently. That wasn’t going to stop Karma just yet.
“2”
Nagisa looked away for less than a second, before looking back at Karma. Most likely, he was considering whether Karma was being serious.
“1”
Nagisa still stood there. It appeared he was not getting into the water of his own accord.
“zero, okay here we go.”
Karma moved forwards, quickly running towards his boyfriend with water splashing at his side. Nagisa barely had any time to react, making an attempt to turn around and run away, but he was just a little too slow to escape Karma. Karma held his arms open wide and embraced his boyfriend, entangling his arms in there as well, but instead of making it some kind of hug, just picked him up.
At first Nagisa just yelped, confused about what had just happened. Then, he started kicking, trying to wiggle himself free from his boyfriend’s grip. There were some noises of complaint, but Karma ignored those. The grip he had was tight and just a tad too powerful for Nagisa to escape.
He walked back into the water until it came up to his knees. With the struggling Nagisa still in his grip, he took a ready stance. His lips were curled into a mischievous smirk. He was excited for this part.
All of a sudden, he dropped Nagisa. Well.. dropped… It was more like he threw the other boy into the water. Nagisa yelled and, with a big splash, landed in the water. After struggling for just a short moment, he sat up, shoulders and up above the water. The look on his face spoke of dissatisfaction.
Karma, on the other hand, just laughed.
“And now you’re in!” He announced.
Before he knew it, Nagisa had gotten up. With inhuman speed, he moved around Karma, hooking his leg around his, and used his hands to push him over. Karma was being tackled. He made an attempt to save himself but, sadly, Nagisa’s tackle was pretty waterproof. Karma, on the other hand, wasn’t waterproof, and landed in the water with a splash.
When he came up again, he had a challenging smile on his face. One look at Nagisa confirmed he was feeling the same. His boyfriend looked proud, but not entirely done with their insignificant battle. It also, to Karma at least, looked a little hot.
“That's how we’re going to play this, huh?” He raised an eyebrow.
“Depends,” Nagisa shrugged, “Are you ready to fight a battle you can’t win.”
There was no malicious intent in either of their words. Both of them had meant it in a playful manner, and both thrived on the friendly competition between the two of them. So, yes, Karma was more than intrigued by Nagisa’s sudden cockiness. He had to make sure he got rid of that arrogant smile on Nagisa’s face.
“Game on.”
--Red Burnt Skin--
When they’d gotten back to Karma’s place late in the afternoon, nothing but complaints left Karma’s mouth. His skin was burning red, slight patches of white skin visible on places that had been covered during the day. The contrast was great, and so was the pain.
“My skin is going to burn off,” Karma grumbled.
“No it’s not,” Nagisa spoke matter of factly, “and I feel like this is the perfect time for an ‘I told you so.’”
Karma just grumbled, really not up for that discussion. As he fell down on his couch, his skin rubbed slightly against a pillow with a more rough fabric, and he felt himself cringe all throughout. He pouted, trying to gain pity attention from his boyfriend.
That attention didn’t appear to be happening. Nagisa was just unpacking some empty food containers from their bag, focused as he stacked them up in an attempt to bring all of them to the kitchen in one go. From the look on his face, one would say he wasn’t too bothered about his boyfriend’s pain. Karma, being said pained boyfriend, wasn’t a fan of that.
“Nagisa~” His voice came out in a singsong manner, “Don’t be mean, I’m suffering.”
When Nagisa turned around to look at him, the look in his eyes spoke of book volumes. On a surface level, he looked unimpressed, eyebrows raised as he looked down at Karma laid down on the couch. In his eyes was also a hint of disappointment. Karma had grown rather familiar with that particular look, so he was one of the few people who could read past the bigger emotions Nagisa portrayed on his face. Yes, he knew Nagisa very well, and he knew Nagisa thought that Karma was overreacting.
“I got a little burnt too,” Nagisa argued.
“You didn’t get sunburned,” Karma complained, “You got sun kissed.”
Karma couldn’t help but be a little grumpy about it all. Although there was some truth to Nagisa’s words, a little sunscreen like his boyfriend had used would have been wise, it still felt unfair how easily Karma burnt in the sun compared to Nagisa. Even without the sunscreen, Nagisa barely tanned. Meanwhile Karma had to live like a lobster.
“I have some aloe vera,” Nagisa offered with an annoyingly caring tone, “Do you want me to put some on your shoulders?”
“... yes please.”
--Orange Sunset--
Nagisa poked Karma’s bright red arm, earning a groaned response from him. He was still a little grumpy over the whole sunburn ordeal, but at the very least he had now somewhat cooled down due to the aloe vera Nagisa had been so gracious to share with him. So, the complaining had stopped, and Nagisa suggested going on a walk to end their long day. To Karma, ending a long day with another physical activity was a little weird, considering it just made the day longer, but Nagisa seemed really eager to go outside again, so he opted to not complain about it.
It was a rather enjoyable walk. Nagisa talked throughout most of it, Karma only interjecting a few times with a funny side comment or fact Nagisa wasn’t aware of yet, and that was just fine. Karma liked hearing Nagisa’s rambling. The enthusiasm in Nagisa’s voice as he described a particularly spectacular scene in an action movie he’d recently seen was cute. Why would Karma ever complain about seeing Nagisa happy?
“Oh woah,” Nagisa suddenly interrupted himself mid-story, “The sky looks so cool right now.”
The sky they were looking at was in fact very pretty, Karma had to agree. Above them, an orange colour had started to spread out, becoming a deeper version of its own colour as their eyes were directed towards the horizon. The sun, another shade of orange, was about halfway down by now, yet still illuminated the world very well. Just like the rest of the day, there were no clouds to interrupt the bright colours of the sky.
When Karma looked back at Nagisa, he noted that the orange lighting of the sunset was more than a little flattering on the boy. His skin was touched by the light, changing its tone and making him appear like he was gold. If Karma didn’t know better, he would say Nagisa looked like a god.
Except, he knew better, and Nagisa would respond awkwardly to that statement. He wouldn’t know what to say and just stammer his way through. On any other occasion, Karma would have made the comment, considering he enjoyed teasing his boyfriend. At that moment, however, he didn’t feel like ruining the moment.
“It’s pretty,” was all Karma said.
Nagisa seemed a little taken back by the comment. “That’s all? Just pretty?”
“Well, it is.”
“Not even a ‘like you’ comment?”
“Are we fishing for compliments now, Nagisa?”
Nagisa turned red, although his cheeks had already been the crimson colour because of the day’s worth of sun. He looked away from Karma, a slight pout on his face and a loss for words. It was a common, yet still amusing, sight. So, Karma just laughed at him. That was his usual response.
“I didn’t mean it that way!” Nagisa defended himself, “I-I meant it like-”
Karma just held up his hand, interrupting the other boy’s explanation. He didn’t need a stuttering explanation of something Karma fully understood. He’d been joking, obviously. There had been so many occasions where Karma had made the exact joke Nagisa had been referring to, so he couldn’t exactly blame Nagisa for almost expecting it. It had been the perfect set up, actually.
Instead, he turned to look at the sunset again, admiring its beauty and the moment it was creating for him. As cheesy as it all was, he really did feel the need to share that moment with Nagisa. Sunsets were, perhaps, a little overdone as a romantic setting, however, it still worked so well. Why fix what wasn’t broken? Why not use this moment for his own cheesy gains?
Nagisa seemed to share that sentiment, because the moment Karma held his hand closer to his boyfriend, he immediately grabbed hold of it. They swung their entangled hands about for a bit in silence, watching the sun slowly disappear down into something unknown. Behind them, the sky had already started turning a darker shade of blue, but that didn’t matter to them. The approaching darkness wasn’t the thing they were focused on in that moment.
With the last rays of sunshine still hitting their face, Karma turned to Nagisa, pulling his boyfriend closer to him. One hand went to hold Nagisa’s cheek as he moved forwards and connected their lips. Their kiss went on until the sun was completely down, darkness slowly falling over the world, and the summer’s day had finally ended.

Chapter 1 / Chapter 2 / Chapter 3
Chapter 4
The Preserve had originally been an isolated island about 50 miles off the coast of the mainland.  Over the decades, the land had been expanded with man made floats serving to support the extra buildings and complexes that cropped up to cater to the small human population that stuck around to help out.
The wolves still kept to the interiors, most of them having built huge cottage-villas which could house the entire pack, territories marked out clearly to avoid disputes. A few of the very traditional ones lived on the huge mountains that lined the northern end, opting to stay in their wolf-forms most of the time.
The island itself was beautiful, rich vegetation , a thriving fauna and a landscape that was lined with beautifully stark cliffs up high and private little coves and beaches scattered below.
Taehyung and his daughter lived on a beautiful beach side villa, which had its own vegetable garden , a staff of over 8 to take care of everything, a private jetty for trips to the mainland and a helipad/ airstrip.
True to his word, Taehyung did not stay around most days. He was busy with his campaign and I spent the first week recovering. The doctor visited everyday and by the end of the week, most of the internal injuries were healing well, the pain well managed with meds.
Luna had moved into my room, pretty much and I spent the days with her curled into my side, reading from her favorite books, stopping when she encountered a particularly difficult word, ebony eyes turning to mine for help. We read countless books, and she introduced me to all her best friends : Mr. Ted the bear, Kihyun the bunny and Momo the panda. The stuffed animals had a small baby carrier of their own and she liked carting them all around the house.
“She was really pretty. Mama....” Luna whispered one night, as we lay curled on the window seat in my room, a fur throw covering us up as we stared out into the rocky beach far below.
I felt my heart lurch in shared grief.
“Was she? What else do you remember about her....?” I asked softly.
“Her scent. “ Luna said quickly. “ She smelled just like you. Like home and fresh cookies with sugar sprinkles. And rainy puddles you can jump in.”
I bit my lips, mindful that Luna was just listing her favorite things. I didn’t know much about how weres scented other weres or humans. But i supposed it made sense that her mother’s scent should remind her of things that offered her comfort and joy.
But her next words threw me for a loop.
“Daddy didn’t like her much....” She said suddenly and I felt my throat close up .
“Oh-Oh?” I was genuinely shocked. Taehyung had looked devastated when he had told me about his wife’s passing....
Luna shook her head.
“My friend from school, Mina? Her mommy’s still alive and her daddy likes her. They kiss and stay in the same room. Mommy and Daddy never kissed. Mommy lived on the east wing.... That’s on the other side. Near the rose gardens.”
I bit my lips, feeling incredibly guilty for some reason. This information felt somehow private and not for stranger’s ears. I didn’t want Luna to get into trouble for saying this to me .
“I miss her sometimes. I’m glad you’re here.” She sniffled and i felt my heart crack in two. The girl was replacing her mom with me, I thought miserably. I couldn’t in good conscience let this happen.
But as the days stretched into weeks, with Taehyung out and busy most of the time, i couldn’t bring myself to leave. Luna did appear to be calmer, more grounded and happier with me around. She liked staying close to me, at touching distance and she often buried her nose into my neck, sniffing till I had to gently pry her off.
Although, absent physically, Taehyung called every day. He facetimed his daughter twice at least and I got a call every night at exactly nine. It was usually curt and formal but he did tell me what he was upto.
“The elections are coming up soon.... I need to work a bit more on the immediate reforms we’re planning to launch...I won’t be available this week, Luna’s keeping well?”
“Yes, she is. We made a modern recreation of red riding hood and the wolf today with play dough.”
Silence.
“Interesting choice of fairy tale, Mi Rae ssi...” He drawled.
I flushed at how my name sounded in that voice.
“It’s a bit different plot wise. In this case, the granny is just a meanie who likes to order Red about and the wolf is the one who rescues her.” I grinned.
He chuckled amicably.
“Bit of a stretch , that. But I’m glad you’re happy. I didn’t want to pressure you too much and i know its asking way too much of you . But Ms. Lee says that Luna is happier than she’s ever been and I do believe you’re the one I have to thank for that. “
I bit my lips. I wanted to tell him that Luna was getting way too attached. That I was afraid of what would happen when it was time for me to leave, but already i could hear voices in the background, people calling for his attention and I remembered that he was doing something important.
 He was trying to build a better world for his little girl.
In the long run, all of this would be for Luna’s benefit only.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
it had been nearly a month since I’d last seen Taehyung . A whole three months since I’d moved into his villa. My paycheck as a nanny was three times what I was paid as a lab tech. But I hadn’t stopped working at the research facility either. I spent the days there, when Luna was busy with her school work . The vaccine had been successful but somehow, my father’s company had pulled some sort of nonsense with the patenting and not everyone had got the shorts.
I stared out into the murky blue waters as they crashed into the jagged black rocks that lined the private beach. The huge bay windows in the living space offered an unfettered view of the rocky beach.
Next to me, Luna was pretty much bouncing around, trying to find all her beach day toys. I watched her fondly, feeling something squeeze my heart when I thought about not seeing her again. The elections were done, the results were due any day now and Taehyung had already told me that he was looking to end this arrangement soon.
Luna had a mind like no other. A vibrantly curious child with the most incredible questions, it was clear that she adored her father more than anything else in the world. In the evenings, she liked to play near the small water inlet that fed into the Ocean. The water was shallow, barely an inch or so deep, the terrain covered in small smooth pebbles in every shade of brown of grey.
Luna and I  spent most of the weekends exploring the small beach around the villa, foraging around in the coves while her caregiver watched me covertly from a distance. She clearly didn’t trust me much, but I tried not to let it get to me.
I wasn’t here to stay. Taehyung had sent me a mail the previous week, letting me know that I was no longer had to babysit, because he was planning to move to Seoul himself. He would be renting out a condominium there and hiring a full time nanny.
And that was fine. it wasn’t like i hadn’t seen that coming. I had a life of my own and i had to get back to it. My cottage near the research facility was fixed now and I was looking forward to getting back to my life, no matter how much it hurt to leave Luna behind.
 I was a little upset that he had sent an impersonal mail to me instead of talking to me in person. Or maybe spoken about it over the phone at least. But I knew that he was just trying to make it easier for me to cut all ties.
Okay, fine, maybe I was a little bit bitter that Taehyung hadn’t even offered to hire me to take care of Luna .  I wasn’t qualified , yes, but so far Luna had been a dream to stay with. She was so inquisitive and bright, so full of sunshine and happiness.
After three months of her unconditional love for me,  the idea of not coming home to her vibrant laugh and endless giggles, it just felt so painful.
“Rae Rae, let’s gooooo....” Her voice broke me out of my thoughts . Despite endless protests from Ms. Lee, Luna insisted on calling me Rae Rae and I found it adorable.
I jumped a little, hastily moving to grab the sunscreen, the hat and gloves. While Luna did heal quickly courtesy her wolf-y genes, she was also incredibly prone to sunburn. The first few times, she had promptly shifted into her wolf form when i tried to put it on her, snipping my fingers angrily. The chemical was supposed to be unscented but her sensitive nose had clearly picked it up anyway.
It took a lot of bribing with delicious meat patties and steak bites, for the girl to shift back and let me apply it on her.
But now she was comfortable with letting me apply it on her when we went to the beach.
She picked up her backpack, a baby blue fur lined affair with twin bunny ears near the handle , and the small tote bag full of her collection of seashells and skipped out of the room happily. I finished packing the rest of her beach stuff : towels, napkins, hair pins and a change of clothes just in case.
We were just climbing down the huge stairwell, when Taehyung’s voice rang through the foyer, startling me badly. i hadn’t seen him in a long time and against my better judgement I almost half ran back to put some make up on at least. I probably looked like an ogre with smeared sunscreen and my hair uncombed and in a bun.
“Lu - Lu? Baby???” He called out, his deep voice pretty much reverberating off the walls .
“DAAAADAAAAAA”
I watched her almost tumble headlong the stairs in her rush to get into her father’s arms and I hung back, letting them have their reunion.
I waited till Taehyung called out for me, before moving to greet him as well.
The first thing that stuck me was how incredibly handsome he looked, hair now fully black, swept straight back from his forehead. He was dressed in skinny jeans and a loose black shirt, buttons undone to show the lines of his pecs and a pair of dangly earrings caught the light as he turned to stare at me.
“Mi Rae ssi....i see you’re all ready for Beach day?” He grinned softly.
There was something radiant about him, a definite lack of anxiety. He looked relaxed almost.
“You won?” i blurted out. “ You won didn’t you?”
Taehyung’s eyes glinted .
“Its not officially announced yet, but yes, the Commission called me today . They think I’ve won by a landslide.
Before I could rethink my impulse, I flung myself into his arms, genuinely thrilled beyond belief.
“RThat’s so incredible, Taehyung ssi...i’m so happy for you and-”
“Tae? Should I get the other suitcase?”
The female voice made me jolt, and I pulled away, arm still arapped around his neck, intensely aware of his hands on my waist.
Three feet away from us , stood an incredibly beautiful young woman. She was almost as tall as Tae, probably the same age as him and her eyes flashed red when she looked at me.
I flinched, stepping back like i’d been scalded.
“Just leave it sweetheart, one of my men will get it. Come meet my little girl.” Taehyung said casually, shooting me one brief intense look of.....anger? annoyance? I couldn’t figure it out.
 Sweetheart? did he just call her-
Luna had shuffled to hide behind my legs now, her fingers gripping my waist as she refused to greet the newcomer.
“Luna, this is Ms Jihyun. She’s a very good friend of mine.”
Jihyun dropped to her knees, eyes flashing red again as she smiled a tight lipped smile.
“Hello, Luna. How are you doing?” She said seriously. Luna’s grip on me tightened.
“She’s a little shy.” I choked out, trying to tamp down the rising sense of heartbreak. No. i had actively fought against feeling this way. Every night here, I had told myself that I would not think about Kim Taehyung. Admiring him for what he did , for how hard he worked for his kind....that was one thing ....but this. This was madness.
Taehyung reached out around me to lift Luna up into her arms.
“How about we go to the beach with Jihyun and Ms Lee today?” He said casually, holding his hand out to me.
I almost did something stupid, like press my hand into his before realizing that he was asking for the bag i had over my shoulders. Wordlessly, I handed it over.
“I want to go with Rae Rae....” Luna said sharply, lips jutting out in a petulant little pout.
“Well, Appa and Ms. Rae need to talk about something and once we’re done, I’ll join you there okay?” He ruffled her hair softly and then gently placed her back down.
Luna gave me an imploring look.
“Are you leaving me?” Her lips wobbled.
I shook my head instinctively.
“Of course not baby, I’ll be right there. Just a few minutes, okay? Don't forget your sunscreen.” I smiled and Luna pouted again but moved to Ms. Lee’s side hesitantly.
Taehyung waited till the three of them began leaving before turning to me.
“Thank you.” He said quietly , gaze moving to me with the same intensity, and this time I knew what he was doing. He was trying to gauge what I was thinking and I remembered, weakly that Alpha wolves could sometimes sense moods, changes in a person’s body temperatures and things like that. It wasn’t like mind reading or anything but a perceptive enough werewolf could definitely guess what kind of mood someone was in.
I fought to keep my face neutral. There wasn’t much I could do about how clammy and cold my entire body had gone after meeting Jihyun. It wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to guess why I didn’t l;ike Jihyun there.
“It’s not you.” He said gently.
I swallowed.
“Sorry?”
“You’re beautiful. If we were.... the same kind of people.....I wouldn’t be saying this. But because of who we are.... I’m going to say it. It’s not a good idea.” He whispered.
I flushed, feeling like my entire body had been dipped in ice cold water.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said evenly.
He hummed.
“If you leave today, there’s a job waiting for you in the Research Center. It’s a level up from what you’re doing right now. I’ve asked them to put up extra security around your cabin and I’ve talked with the wolves here. No one will come anywhere near you. “
I nodded bleakly.
“Thank you.” I said quietly.
“You’re going to forget me and Luna in a few weeks. And I would rather that things end now, before Luna becomes more attached.”
I nodded.
“Can i talk to her before I leave?” I asked softly.
He hesitated.
“I don’t.... I mean, I would rather not have Jihyun be present for that. She’s.... well she’s someone I’m getting to know and she may feel -”
I wanted to kick myself in the face for ever having agreed to this whole thing.
“I understand. I’ll be back tomorrow morning to get the rest of my stuff and to say goodbye to Luna.” I said shortly.
Before he could reply, I brushed past him and ran up to my room. I had to get out of here as soon as I could.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Luna cried inconsolably and I was eternally grateful that no one else was there when I carefully unpacked the huge carton of snacks and toys , I’d packed for her. Taehyung had made things a little easier, by telling Luna that it wasn’t me who was leaving but it would be them. They were going to a new place so they would be leaving me behind because I had stuff to do here.
“I’m not going to be gone completely. I’m going to come visit you as often as I can alright and look....” I pulled out the small phone I’d brought her.
She stopped sniffling and held her hand out. I placed the flip phone in her hands.
“Theres just two numbers there. See the picture of the wolf? Thats daddy..... And see the one with the flower.....that’s me. If you want to talk to either of us, all you need to do is press this button.”
Luna hesitated.
“Daddy said, I can’t have any phones.” She said hesitantly. What a wonderful child, i thought fondly.
“Yes, but this isn’t the kind of phone that could hurt your eyes. It’s just a talking phone. Besides, your daddy already knows and he’s okay with it.” I smiled.
She nodded, turning the little device over and over in her hands.
“Daddy say’s we’re going to the city. Why don’t you want to come?” She said angrily and i sighed.
“Its not that I don’t want to come, baby. It’s just that my home is here. I help take care of the little pups here remember? Some of them get sick and I help make them better....” I smiled, ruffling her hair.
She nodded.
“Good girl...Now how about we go see the sandcastle you built yesterday...? See if it’s still there?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Life went on and I found myself busy enough to not dwell on Taehyung too much. The vaccines were rolling out much faster now and most of the cases were milder . i spent the days in the research center and went home to my cozy cabin. Taehyung had been true to his word an an electric fence ran around the perimeter , twelve feet tall . A security guard stayed near the gate at all times, a beta werewolf named Minjun.
Two weeks after Taehyung had moved out of the island, a distraction arrived in the form of one Jeon Jungkook . He was a year younger than me and finishing his internship before becoming a radiologist. He was smart , handsome and an alpha wolf with a deceptively cute bunny like smile.
Jungkook liked following me around when we had free time and I found his incessant noona , noona...endearing. But I was also not an idiot.
Jungkook was looking for a fuck buddy and I was convenient. The only female in the research center. Werewolves didn’t do one night stands with each other, because being intimate always left a scent and it would make things messy. So weres  generally went to humans for no strings attached sex.
It wasn’t that I minded , but a part of me was terrified i would do something stupid. Like call him Taehyung in the middle of us fucking.
But of course, stupid decisions were my forte.
So I did end up sleeping with him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Well, you look miserable.” Jimin commented mildly, as I stumbled forward to the counter. I hadn’t slept much the previous night and had nearly missed the ferry to the mainland in the morning.
“I’m fine oppa. Just frazzled. Give me something strong but sweet...” I begged, riffling through my bag for my wallet. Outside, the rain poured in torrents. I was still dripping water from my hair and my jacket, although I’d been out of the rain for a whole five minutes.
“Taehyung’s been asking about you....Why don’t you pick his calls?” Jimin said casually and I flinched.
“I did pick his calls. a couple of times....” I muttered .
That had been a whole experience. Taehyung had called me two weeks back, frothing at the mouth about something.
Apparently, Ji Hyun the lovely girlfriend that Kim Taehyung like flaunting all over town, was also the older sister on one Jeon Jungkook. And because we had had sex the previous night, Jungkook had smelled like me when he visited Taehyung and Ji hyun. Even Luna had picked up on the scent.
How on earth was i supposed to know?
Taehyung had been so furious that I’d hung up the phone midway through.
“And, what happened?”
I shrugged.
“And then I got busy. Why? I’ve been talking to Luna... I even met her a couple of times. It’s not like I have any other reason to talk to him.... “ I protested.
Jimin hummed.
“He’s still seeing that model. Jeon Ji hyun? I heard her brother works in the Research center?” Jimin raised an eyebrow, sliding my drink across the counter. I stepped out of the line but stayed near the counter, staring at him. Damn it. Had Taehyung actually told Jimin about it?
“Jungkook? Yeah. He’s a doctor... He’s doing his MD , radiology and he’s here for exposure , apparently...”
“Alpha?” Jimin continued flitting about, making orders but his tone held a note of sympathy.
I shrugged.
“Yeah, he is. But we don’t talk much. We went out one night but then he’s been aloof ever since.” I shrugged again hoping that Jimin was buying my nonchalant act. i still didn’t know how much he knew.
Jungkook was a nice guy and I was a little peeved that he didn’t seem to want anything more than a friends with benefits thing. But that had less to do with him and more to do with the fact that men, in general, never seemed to consider me as a potential girlfriend.
But then, the poor guy was in probably the most crucial part of his education. Relationships were probably the farthest thing from his mind.
Jimin stopped when the last customer in the line left. He stared at me.
“Taehyung told me Luna called you one morning and Jungkook picked the phone.”
I froze.
“What?!” I hissed, completely thrown. This, I hadn’t known.
“You went out? With Jungkook?  And he stayed over , I’m guessing....I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you guys did not play Jenga all night?” He glared at me. I flushed.
“Fine. We slept together. We are sleeping together....its just consensual sex between two willing parties,  . It’s no big deal.” I said flippantly.
“You don’t think that’s why Taehyung has been calling you? That’s his potential brother in law right there. It’s too messy. I think you should stop. ” He frowned.
I rolled my eyes.
“Listen it has nothing to do with me. I’m not going to marry Jungkook okay? I’m not going to be calling Taehyung my brother in law either. Its not going to happen. i just had this...stupid king of crush on him and he knew about it. He turned me down too, did he tell you that. He told me him and I were too different.... meaning I wasn’t a were so he wouldn’t consider being with someone like me. ”
Jimin groaned.
“you know why he feels that way. Don’t make this about you. It’s not personal.”
“Then why is it spilling into my personal life? I have no obligation to him. I can sleep with who I want.....”
Jimin rolled his eyes.
“Taehyung’s a were. He’s not going to see it that way.”
“Well, I don’t give a damn how he sees it, I’m having sex with a handsome young man who is attracted to me. That’s a good time, right there and I’m not going to stop having a good time just because it offends Taehyung’s delicate sensibilities.” I snapped.
Jimin shrugged.
“Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When I went back to my cabin that evening, I found Minjun missing from his usual place near the gate. The gate was still locked so I didn’t think too much about it, merely slotting the rusty old key into the huge lock and prying it open.
I made my way to the door, opening it carefully.
i nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw who was there.
“what the- Seo Joon?” I said in disbelief, stumbling back when the tall alpha stumbled to his feet from where he was lounging on the couch.
“Well, look who’s here....if it isn’t the slutty little bitch who wants to sleep her way through every were on the island....First Taehyung and now Jungkook.....you sure know who to pick, huh.....? All powerful, influential wolves..... “ He slurred.
I stared at him. This wasn’t good. I turned on my heel, ready to run back out but he was faster than me. I groaned when he slammed into my back pinning me to the door with so much force that the wood splintered,.
While my bruised ribs had healed, they still hurt a bit. And the force of his actions left my mind reeling from the pain.
“Get off me!! “ I screamed, “ MINJUN!!!!! MINJUN HELP!!!”
“SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU WHORING BITCH!!!”
He slapped me right across the face, the strength of it sending me crashing into the side table. I whimpered as I tried to get on my feet, fingers fumbling for my phone .
“it was you wasn’t it? I was supposed to be the deputy minister.... Taehyung’s supposed to be my fucking friend. instead i got fired like some lowly runt ...... It was you wasn’t it? you convinced him that humans are our fucking friends....”
I shook my head, frantic.
“No...i swear I’ve not spoken to Taehyung...i didn’t say anything... Seo Joon please don’t...” I screamed when he reached down and grabbed my hair, yanking me to my feet till my scalp felt like it was on fire.
“Maybe I should fuck you too....since that's the thing people seem to be doing these days....Its because of your father isn’t it? That bastard has been all over the news,  talking these past few weeks about how his precious daughter is doing a lot of work for the welfare of wolves....Maybe I should fuck his daughter too....  ” He began, reaching for my blouse.
I barely registered the nonsense about my father before a loud sound broke through the din.
The door swung open and the sound of gunfire made me scream.
 I stared at the door only to see the security guard staring at us with wide eyes.
Minjun , panicked and completely overwhelmed , had blindly opened fire on both of us.
I felt the touch of the bullet to my shoulder, before the blinding explosion of pain.
 But he seemed to have hit Seo Joon as well, enough times for the were to let go of me and I crashed to floor, clutching my shoulder in agony.
The sound of gunfire had attracted more people and through the throng I heard Jungkook’s voice.
“Noona.... Mirae noona is that you----???”
“Kookie!!” I croaked out desperately. Jungkook’s eyes went wide when he saw, me, pushing his way past the other wolves before letting out a snarl. The sound seemed to make the others cower and I remembered that he was an alpha too.
I gripped his arms when he reached me.
“Don’t tell Taehyung...” I gasped out, still clutching  my shoulder.
“God, what the fuck.... We need to get you out of here...” He was already dialing for the ambulance. I waited for him to finish, gasping from the pain. Fuck, it hurt like hell.
“We’re going to get you to the research center first.” Jungkook said frantically.
I nodded, stumbling to my feet when he tried to lift me up.
“It’s okay...just...get me something to …” But he was already peeling off his shirt, wadding up to press against the bleeding bullet hole .
“Hyung is going to kill Seo Joon.” He said grimly.
For once, I didn’t particularly care.
My mind raced because I hadn’t thought about my father in years.
What did that tyrant want with me now??
Because you guys are literally the best followers/supporters/mutual/human beings ever, I am hosting an event!
First off, I want to give a big THANK YOU SO SO VERY MUCH to everyone who has supported me in any way!! Even if you have simply just read my work it still means a lot! You guys truly are amazing and mean so much to me! ❤️
Now, on to the fun stuff! The event!
Rules
Anyone can join this event!
This is an sfw event so no smut or dark content!
I may end up doing some angst for this event but it depends on the request and such!
Characters will be listed at the very bottom for who I will write for in this event specifically!
So, for this I decided to add a little twist to it! I have placed a prompt list below with 25 prompts on it. Each prompt may be requested 3 times (if that many people even want to participate 😳) and each character on my list below may be requested 5 (I changed it cause three’s too little) times. As requests come in I will edit and mark the prompts accordingly so you know what’s what.
MRkings: • = how many times a character has been used. I will write what character has been requested with what prompt beside the prompt.
There will also be a word bank with 50 random words at the bottom of the prompt list. You may request up to 3 words with 1 prompt and 1 character! These will all be oneshots so they will be a bit more time consuming! So please, be understanding and patient with me. As for the unique twist, each of the prompts are a quote from some of my favorite songs. Apologies if the quotes aren’t interesting or are kind of “weird”. My music taste is everywhere. Have fun requesting! I hope you all have a good day/night!
Hey folks!
Here’s my Day 1 post for Soma Week 2021. Tooth-rotting fluff towards the end - please enjoy. ^-^
@soulxmakaweek
Maka awoke with an audible groan, first registering the lack of her weapon’s familiar soul wavelength in the room before anything else. Whether she was disappointed or grateful of his absence was difficult to determine in her hazy mindstate.
Soul had been fussing over her for the past day, and while his concern for her comfort was endearing - his mother hen routine got old fast.
His over-attentive behavior was at least understandable. He had little to do cooped up in their hotel room, and ended up alternating between watching cooking shows at a considerately low volume, pacing around what little square footage they had, and laying in his bed beside hers tapping out the rhythm to whatever was blaring from his headphones. He was sure to pester her about how she was feeling at least every 20 minutes and his restlessness had been grinding on her last nerve before she fell into a fitful sleep.
If she had to hear “you okay?” or “need anything?” one more time, she was liable to snap and throw the closest object to her directly at his dumb, fluffy head. Not that he actually deserved it.
If she were being honest with herself, she was mostly frustrated with the situation itself - not Soul.
Well, maybe she was a little frustrated with Soul.
He may have been outwardly kind towards her in her predicament, but she could feel something else beneath the surface of that. She was well-versed in the subtle language of Soul’s facial expressions after all.
He was dying to tease her, and while she commended him for keeping his mouth blessedly shut about the humor in her suffering - she knew it amused him at least a little bit.
Because despite the fact that they had been sent to the bustling beach-side city of Recife, Brazil to take down a particularly cunning and repulsive kishin - she was not stuck in bed over any kind of work-related injury inflicted during their battle with the corrupted beast.
There was no glory or dignity that could be gained from the current state of her weakness. She had not received her injuries from a tense and thrilling battle, but instead from being negligent in her application of sunscreen before falling asleep splayed out on a beach towel under the unforgiving afternoon sun.
Soul had even recommended that she apply sunscreen a second time for her “hella pasty” skin and she responded to his comment in kind by throwing the sunscreen bottle at him with impressive accuracy and force.
Now she was bedridden with what was likely sun poisoning and had a complexion comparable to a hot dog.
Perhaps she should have taken Soul’s advice after all.
She also may have reached her last straw with Soul’s smothering behavior earlier and said something along the lines of “please get the hell out of here and give me at least an hour of peace,” before taking her rather unsatisfying nap.
That certainly explained his absence.
She let out a heavy sigh before deciding she would deal with the pain of moving so that she could re-apply aloe vera for the twentieth time that day. Only this was the first time she would be doing it without Soul’s assistance.
It was difficult to reach most areas of her back without him. She was certainly flexible enough to do it on her own, but the pain that came with stretching her arms was something she would prefer to avoid experiencing if possible.
She started on lathering her arms and chest area first, grounding herself in the way it stung yet soothed at the same time.
She only got through a small portion of her back before the combination of fatigue, nausea, and pain convinced her to give it a rest.
Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to just figure out where Soul was. She didn’t need him or anything. She was just checking in - making sure he didn’t get himself into any trouble while she was asleep.
She made an awkward hobble across the room to retrieve her phone, careful to avoid bending her scorched appendages on the way there.
It only took a ring and a half for Soul to pick up her call, and she cursed herself for the way her entire body relaxed a little at the sound of his voice.
“Hey. Everything alright?”
He had that pleasant gravelly quality to his voice that usually indicated he either just woke up or he had a few drinks.
“I’m fine, Soul. I just woke up, actually. What have you been up to?” she’d tried to sound casual, but the hitch in her voice when she tried to lower herself back on to the bed betrayed her. The soft cotton sheets felt like they may as well have been a brillo pad against her sensitive flesh.
“Just givin’ you space like you asked. Found a neat little place to drink just down the road from us. To be honest with you, I think it might be a swinger bar or somethin’ - everyone here is middle aged and horny as hell.”
Maka felt a twinge of irritation at that last comment. Was he really off flirting with a bunch of Brazillian cougars while she was stuck in bed?
“S’not like I’m interested, but they keep buyin’ me drinks anyway. I don’t speak very good Portuguese and they seem to think that’s pretty sexy of me,” he added with a throaty chuckle that raised goosebumps across her skin.
“Why don’t you just stay there all night then! I could care less what you do!!”
She felt a bit childish for her outburst, but blamed it on Soul’s innate ability to push every last button she has in very few words.
“If you don’t care, then why’d ya call me in the first place?” She could just tell that his lip was curling into a smirk by his voice alone. Oh, he is so lucky he’s not in book-throwing distance.
“Just wanted to make sure you weren’t dead in a ditch somewhere,” she murmured with only a little bit of edge left in her.
“Oh yeah? That all?”
“.... Also, I guess you can come back to the hotel room.”
“Sorry? Can you speak up a little?”
“I said you can come back to the hotel room! Don’t make me say it again or you can sleep on the streets!”
He responded with an amused snort, “Oh, that’s very gracious of you. What a loving and benevolent meister I have.”
“Yeah, whatever. Don’t fall in a ditch on your way here.”
“Love ya too, Maka. Be there in a few.”
With that the phone call cut off, and she was left staring at the ceiling and feeling an overwhelming warmth in her face.
She decided to blame that on the sunburn rather than her weapon’s comment.
It only took about 20 minutes before she heard the click of the hotel door as it swung open, her partner poking his head in first and flashing her a shark-toothed smile before he kicked the door open the rest of the way. He was carrying an entire pack of drinks under his arm and a plastic CVS bag in the other.
“Stopped by CVS round the corner. Dunno if you’ll like ‘em, but I got these weird electrolyte drinks. S’posed to help hydrate you better or something,” he said as he plopped down at the end of the bed, emptying the contents of the plastic bag.
“Also got you some ibuprofen, more aloe, and a couple snack things. I know you said you weren’t hungry, but you should really try and eat at least a little bit.”
Maka only nodded, slightly overwhelmed by how caring he was being despite her recently sour attitude.
He tilted his head to the side for a moment, regarding her with gentle eyes before he got up and sat closer to her on the bed, being especially careful not to let his legs touch hers.
He slowly placed the back of his hand against her forehead muttering something about a fever, but she was too focused on his close proximity to her to even register what he was saying. He smelled of beer and limes and sunscreen.
His skin was a perfect bronze color, and he was showing off a lot more of it than he usually did. He was clad only in swim trunks, slider sandals, and a loose-hanging tank top that the top of his scar peeked out of.
He had been out in the sun just as long as she had, napping right beside her even, and yet his skin only tanned; never burned. The lucky bastard.
He used the same hand he’d checked her forehead with to brush back a few stray hairs from her face. “Sleep okay?” he asked in a hushed tone, as if he were worried his voice would bother her.
“I slept okay, I guess. Not much else I can do right now anyways.”
He nodded and gave a sympathetic click of his tongue, running his hand through her hair a few times before reaching for the aloe on the nightstand.
“Need me to get your back?”
She ignored his question, opting to rub the short-cropped silver whiskers covering his jaw with her palm.
“You need to shave.”
He rolled his eyes and let out an exasperated huff, squeezing the tube of aloe into his palms and rubbing them together.
“I’ll just take that as a yes and pretend you think I’m roguishly handsome.”
That earned him a laugh from her that clipped short when he placed his hands softly on her back. It only hurt for the first brief moment of contact, but she soon hummed her approval as the stinging sensation in her back felt dulled and soothed wherever his hands caressed her.
He was talented with his hands - knew just the right amount of pressure to give and take at each moment. She really had needed this. Trying to reach that spot between her shoulder blades on her own had been a nightmare.
Minutes passed with only the sounds of their breath and Soul’s practiced hands over her skin. It should have been awkward, but it wasn’t. Everything was just easy with him.
“Hey, Soul?”
He acknowledged her with a noncommittal grunt.
“Thank you. I know I haven’t exactly been pleasant lately, but I really do appreciate all of your help.”
She wanted to say more, it felt as though she hadn’t really expressed to him how much he means to her, but Soul wasn’t one for flowery words and declarations of love. She knew that was enough of a thanks for him.
“You don’t gotta thank me for all that, Maka. We’re partners, this is what we do for each other.”
“Right,” she whispered, a faint smile gracing her lips.
“All done,” he announced, “you gonna hang tight and read for a bit?”
“No - I’d like to, but I just feel too tired and nauseous to focus on anything like that right now. Maybe I’ll just try to take another nap.”
Without a word, he sauntered over to the book she had brought - a period-piece romance novel that he would make fun of at the first given opportunity. After it was in his grasp, he collapsed on his back right next to her. He really did kind of reek of beer, but she didn’t have the heart to push him away.
Once he found her bookmarked spot, he started from the top of the page with a hardy clear of his throat, reading the lead male love interest’s lines in the most posh and ridiculous accent she could have imagined.
She immediately burst into an uncontrollable fit of giggles and snorts, which only encouraged him to continue, smiling from ear to ear as he did.
She nearly ran out of breath when he began reading the female heroine’s dialogue in a shrill voice that sounded more like an old British nanny than a pretty young woman.
He continued this entertainment for an admirable hour and a half before he had to admit that his vocal cords were defeated from the strain of ‘fancy British lady voice.’
By the time he had put the book aside, she had a hand curled around his bicep and her face was buried in his neck.
He’d said he was watching TV, but he fell asleep within 10 minutes of setting her book down much like an old man.
Her skin felt dry and tight, a feeling she was easily able to ignore while Soul was reading for her. She was aware that she’d need to get up soon to re-apply aloe, or she’d regret it later. Yet, it was so difficult to move away from him.
He was breathing deeply, and he smelled less like a bar and more like a beach the closer she was to him. He always looked so peaceful when he slept too. He looked young, like he didn’t carry the exhaustion that he usually does.
Despite the calm, collected demeanor he always tried to hold around others - he carried a lot of weight on his shoulders from pretending to be the person that other people need him to be. From taking the load off other people’s backs, he only strained himself and she felt this tiredness from it all that seeped into the very cracks of his soul.
She wished he didn’t have to try so hard all the time. She wished he could let himself be taken care of for once.
“I know you told me before that I don’t need to thank you. That the things you do for me are what I should expect from a partner, but you really are more than that to me, Soul,” she’d only whispered this into the crook of his neck, but she lifted her head up just to check that he was still unconscious.
He appeared serene, his breathing steady and not a crinkle in his face to indicate her words had disturbed him from his slumber.
“You can always depend on me too. I’d love to take care of you the way you take care of me. You deserve that - you know that, right?”
Not even a twitch.
She sighed, not expecting him to respond in the first place, but a little disappointed she hadn’t had the courage to tell him this while he was awake. She assumed it safe that he was in a deep sleep and began threading her fingers through his thick tufts of hair sticking up from his forehead.
“I know that when you say you love me, you’re talking about as a partner, as a friend. Well, I love you too. I love you a lot, Soul. I’m always afraid to say it back ... because it would carry a different weight when I say it. It’s like I’m afraid you’d just know.”
His breath hitched for a moment and her heart nearly jumped into her throat.
He only readjusted slightly, pressing his cheek against the top of her head and making a small sound akin to a whimper before his breathing evened out again.
She let out the shaky breath she had been holding and turned her head ever so slightly to press a soft kiss to his throat, where she could feel the warmth of his pulse.
“I hope we stay partners for a really long time.”
Finding Home
Chapter 1 [Part 1] (Dave & Roxie)
Tumblr media
“Are you sure you wanna do this?”
The chopper pilot’s voice was stolen by the wind as Roxie and Dave leaned out the side door to have a look at Isla Nublar approaching on the horizon, “this is a suicide mission! You’ll probably die! I can take you back to the mainland right now!”
“Not a chance!” Roxie yelled back to him, tightening the backpack they had filled with rations and camping gear for the trip, “I’ve waited three years for this! Drop us there, on the North Shore!”
“You’re both crazy!” The pilot complained, turning the chopper anyway to begin descent towards the Island, “I’ll be back in four days for you! If you’re not there, I’ll assume you’re dead and leave without you. This is an unsafe fly-zone!”
“Just do as the lady says!” Dave called through the wind, clinging to the doorframe and his own backpack of supplies, “you don’t wanna be on her bad side!”
“It’s your money, amigos! I won’t be landing here though, you’ll have to jump for it!”
Nodding affirmatives, and with Dave throwing up his thumb, the pilot shook his head in disbelief and lowered the chopper down close to the shore. In the midst of billowing sand clouds, Dave and Roxie leapt from the chopper and onto the beach. Their boots sunk in the soft dunes, and ache from the landing quivered up into their knees. But as they turned, they could only see the bottom of the chopper’s blue and white cabin as it rose back up into the pristine sky.
“We made it,” Roxie breathed, brushing herself off and turning to look at the jungle ahead of them, “we’re actually here.”
“You know he’s right though,” Dave commented, ruffling his hair as to shake away sand grains, “we could get eaten before four days is up. We might not even get past today.”
“I’d rather die trying then never have tried at all,” Roxie shot back, “you’re not getting cold feet, are you?”
“No. Just making an observation, that’s all. So, where exactly are we?”
Removing a folded paper from her interior pocket, Roxie scanned the map of the island. There was a red X on their landing spot, and the place they’d have to get to should they catch the chopper again.
“We’re here, on the north shore,” Roxie said, pointing to the spot and tapping it, “Camp is...was...just across the main Gyrosphere paddock here. It’s a straight shot, we could get there before nightfall,”
“And what if we encounter a dinosaur before then?”
“We shouldn’t if all the fences are still up. A Compy or two perhaps,”
Dave didn’t appear to agree with her assessment of the situation, as his normally loose and humorous brows furrowed up into his hairline. But he said nothing on it, merely exhaled a puff of air and nodded.
“Ok. You have the map memorized, you lead the way.”
“Keep close to me,” Roxie insisted, reaching out her hand for Dave to take and giving the warm palm a solid squeeze, “this place has probably grown a lot in three years. It’ll be a miracle if there’s anything left to see,”
Walking carefully into the underbrush, the mission was officially underway. Roxie wasn’t sure what she was expecting upon finally getting back here. After all, it felt like a lifetime ago. She could memorize and map all the trails and access roads she wanted, but jurassic undergrowth was a menace. For a while, the two of them walked in silence, listening to a slight breeze which rustled the leaves in the canopy. They strained their ears for noises which sounded out of place, but there was nothing but nature.
“So...” Dave spoke up eventually to break the silence, nearly giving Roxie a heart attack, “have you thought about it?”
“It?” Her heart jumped at the oddity of the question. Of course, she knew what it was, and the truth was that she had put quite a bit of thought into it.
But marriage?
It was a lot to take in.
“Though I appreciate your transparency on the matter, love. I’m not sure this is the right time to be having this conversation,” Roxie managed out finally, placing each word together as though pulled from a scrabble bag.
“I don’t see why not,” Dave complained jovially, “I mean, it’s kinda romantic being out here with you. And we don’t have much else to talk about,”
“I hate when you make good points,” Roxie mumbled under her breath, only to stop and slam her arm out for Dave to halt as well, “hold on,”
“What?”
“Shh...I hear something,”
Roxie listened hard again, and for a second she thought maybe she’d just imagined it. But then, somewhere in the distance, was a familiar guttural roar. But it wasn’t my dinosaur which Roxie knew. No, this roar was something else...something far more familiar.
“Is that a car?”
“Rox...”
“No, no I’m serious,” listening harder, Dave was moving across the ground, causing it to crunch under his feet.
“Roxie...”
“It’s an engine. But that not possible...”
“Roxanne!”
Whipping her head up, Roxie was just in time to duck as something was swung at her head. The whoosh of air made the skin on her ears tingle as the attacker pulled back for another go. In a blur of motion, Dave reached up a hand and grabbed whatever was being swung, only to grunt as a foot made contact with his exposed chest and sent him reeling backwards.
“Dave!” Roxie cried, wincing in solidarity as her boyfriend hit the ground with a moan of pain. She was just in time to move as a baseball bat nearly crashed into her outstretched arm, and she realized finally that this wasn’t any animal attacking them, but another human being.
Shuffling backwards to put a few more feet between her and the newcomer, Roxie wondered how they hadn’t seen or heard them coming. Hidden in the deep indigo shadows of the trees, a pair of shining green eyes stared out intently.
“W-we don’t mean you any harm,” Roxie said, grappling for the pepper spray hooked via carabiner to her backpack strap, “please. We’re here to help,”
The stranger said nothing, merely shuffled closer as the baseball bat in their hand dragged across the dirt. To Roxie’s surprise, it fell to the ground with a wooden clunk a moment later. For a second, she wondered if the person would stop. If they would leave them alone. But there was a silver glint in the dark as a knife was pulled from inside a hidden sheath, making a horrible scraping noise.
“Oh...god,”
Jerking as she found herself with her back against a tree, Roxie yelped in panic as the figure leapt at her. She saw a metallic shimmer as the blade sliced through the air and forced her eyes closed. She waited in anticipation for the pain, or the feeling of flesh tearing open. But there was nothing; just a pained, raspy panting and the overwhelming smell of forest and decay. Cracking one clenched lid back open to see what happened, the serrated knife was still held in the air, poised to strike.
The person holding the knife was now fully illuminated by a patch of sunlight, and Roxie had to pause. Green eyes met brown, and the knife lowered as a teenage girl stepped back with a harsh gasp of surprise. Roxie opened her mouth to speak, but there was only a croak.
“...Brooklynn?”
The name almost didn’t fit on her tongue. How she somehow connected the pink haired social media star to the figure before her, Roxie want sure. The stranger — identified now as Brooklynn — tilted her head, furrowing her brows up into her hairline. Unlike three years ago, the pink to her hair was all but a memory. A brown, ratty mess was pulled up behind badly sunburned ears, and skin freckled by long afternoons sparkled with a sheen of mud and sweat. Some of that mud was more red then brown, and Roxie realized it wasn’t just dirt, but also blood that coated her body.
Brooklynn stared at Roxie for a hard moment, her brain whirring behind those piercing green eyes. She then turned to where Dave was now sitting up, rubbing a hand against where he’d been kicked.
“...oh...”
Had she not been so close, Roxie would’ve missed the word. It was barely a whisper, one which was easily taken away by the breezes. Two adults stared down a teenager who had been ready to kill them not a moment before, jaws agape.
“Brooklynn...?” Roxie asked, causing the girl to glance up at her. Her eyes were wild and uncertain behind long bangs, “what...w-what happened to...you?”
It wasn’t a good question; but what really was at this point? What could she ask that she didn’t already know deep down somewhere? Roxie had dreams of rescuing children; the children she had left behind. The children who’s eyes would light up like fireworks at the mere mention of Dinosaurs. But she wasn’t expecting them to actually be alive after three years. She had been expecting to pick up some old relics to bring back, to show the families just to prove she had been on the Island and had done everything in her power to make things right again.
She wasn’t expecting to nearly be murdered by one of the kids she was supposedly here to save.
Brooklynn didn’t say anything, merely pressed her lips together and glanced down at the knife still held in her hand. It almost appeared as though she were forcing it away; like her arm wouldn’t respond to the command of letting them live. The metal scraped back into its holder, and Brooklynn mechanically walked back towards where the baseball bat lay in the grass. She picked it up, clutching the bottleneck grip in both hands.
Then, in a second, she was gone.
Roxie didn’t even have time to call out; the girl had vanished while her eyes were wide open. Were she not still pressed up against a tree with the smell of decay lingering close to her nose and throat, Roxie might’ve believed she was simply seeing impossible things.
“Rox? You ok?”
Jumping as Dave’s hand brushed against her shoulder, the woman opened her mouth but no sound came out.
“No,” she choked finally, turning to the broad chest beside her and seeking solace between his arms, “Dave, we thought none of them survived,”
“Yeah,” glancing down at one another, Roxie felt a horrible thought creep into her gut, “you got really pale all of a sudden,” the man above her commented, “what is it?”
“Dave, what if all of them survived?”
JJ Maybank was like an open book. When he was surrounded by his friends, he would not hesitate to tell them what was on his mind. He spoke honestly about how he felt and always openly stated his opinions. It could be brutal sometimes or really strange, but no one really cared. That was just how JJ was.
Sometimes he would slip small secrets in conversations without realizing it, especially if he was drunk or high (which frankly happened often). But JJ was really good at keeping bigger secrets, his more than anyone else’s. He had collected over the years a total of five secrets that he had (and would) never reveal to anybody. Even his friends. Here’s what they are.
#1 He had his first real kiss at 14
He always told everyone that he had his first kiss at 11, with a ‘hot touron’ (his own words). He had lied to impress his friends - and others too - and it worked. His real first kiss had actually happened in a game of truth of dare, three years after the rumour was spread. He had wanted to tell the truth for a while, but he was ashamed of the story he had made up.
#2 His Dad was an asshole and often used his son as his own punching bag.
This one was the only exception. (Every rules have some exceptions anyways) JJ never wanted for his friends to find out about his abusive father, but they all eventually knew. The first to find out was John B. The two of them hung out almost every day. One time, John B simply asked where the bruises that decorated JJ’s body came from and the blond spilled everything. He was too tired of hiding this secret to himself. It was a huge burden for a boy like him. Not long after, he told his other friends. He didn’t want to hide it from them anymore. It was the hardest thing he ever had to do, but once it was all out, he was relieved they knew.
#3 He had once gone almost a week without eating.
It happened when he was younger, not long after his mother left. His dad had been so angry that he purposely deprived his son of any food. As a kid it was hard for him to find any food by himself and he was ashamed of asking for help. He couldn’t tell anyone. After five days, y/n had noticed that JJ didn’t have any food at lunch and she told her father. Big John, having known Luke when he was younger, had decided to take the boy under his wings. He invited him to eat at the château whenever he could and overpacked John B and Y/n’s lunch so that they would share with him. He was sort of a second dad for JJ.
#4 He had a mild fear of storms.
As a kid, he always compared them to his dad. The quick and bright lightning bolts represented his short temper and the loud thunder claps represented his anger and all the violence he could create. So JJ always made sure to be surrounded by his friends during storms. It brought him reassurance and peace.
#5 He was completely in love with y/n Routledge and she had no idea.
He had know for a long time now, but he couldn’t do anything about it. Instead he drowned his sorrow with alcohol and one nighters with tourons. She was his best friend’s sister and a fellow pogue. The rule was clear, no pogue on pogue macking. Besides she deserved way better than anything he could offer. She could never love him, there was no chance she’d ever feel the same. Right?
>>>
The wind was blowing harshly at this point, whistling as it travelled between the thick branches of the trees. Y/n felt a small shiver slide beneath her shirt and dance along the line of her spine. She tightened the blanket wrapped around her body, readjusting the grip on the book she was reading.
Well, reading wasn’t really the word to use. It was more like staring. She had brought her favourite book outside with her as a way to distract herself, but it didn’t quite work. You see y/n had a twin brother and as much as she loved John B, sometimes he could be really stupid. Like when he decided to go surfing right when a hurricane was hitting the island.
Y/n was absolutely terrified of anything involving the ocean, so at the moment she was practically shaking with fear. She tried to breathe as slowly as she possibly could. She hated being outside during a big storm like this, but she also hated the thought of her brother drowning in the wild waves. So she sat down on the old couch on the front porch of the château, with a warm blanket and a book, waiting until John B came back, hopefully in one piece.
She had always been an anxious person. As a child she would often worry about small things like speaking in public, different events coming up and a bunch of other stuff. She had been diagnosed with anxiety at 10 years old, after having a panic attack in the school hallway. She never received any treatment for it though. Doctors thought she was too young for medication and well therapy was expensive.
Nonetheless, she found ways to cope with it. Tips and tricks that helped her manage it. With time her levels of stress and anxiety lowered and the attacks were rarer. It hadn’t completely disappeared of course, but it was better.
After her father disappeared, it became much worse. It was like she suddenly had a hundred more things to worry about. She and John B had to find enough money to pay for electricity, water and also food. Plus she had to deal with DCS who threatened to send them to foster care. It was unbearable.
“Hey there,” a familiar voice spoke.
“JJ?” Y/n squinted trying to see the boy standing in the dark. “What are you doing, it’s raining you’re gonna get sick.”
He was drenched, completely soaked with water. She didn’t know how long he had been walking in the storm. The rain was falling down so heavily it could soak you to the bone under five minutes. She stuck her hand inside the open window of the living room and reached for a towel. Since they lived near a beach, there was always some lying around on the floor or onto the couch.
“Here,” she handed him a large fluffy towel. “ I can’t guarantee it’s clean, but at least it’ll keep you dry.”
“Thanks.” Y/n let her book fall on the porch.
“Are you okay? You seem, tense.” Her voice was tinted with worry. JJ was one of her closest and oldest friend, she knew perfectly how to read his emotions.
“Yeah, I’m good. Just tired, I guess,” he shrugged nonchalantly.
“JJ you- ” She was about to finish her sentence when the thunder clapped loudly above their head, making the girl flinch at the same time.
JJ was just as scared as she was - maybe a bit less or more he couldn’t really tell - but he didn’t show it. Knowing that she was sitting beside him completely terrified made him feel braver in a way. She seemed so small and vulnerable, he didn’t want her to feel unsafe. He knew that admitting his own fear would only make hers worse. So he hid it in a small box at the back of his mind, hoping he’d eventually forget about it.
“You know, John B might be an asshole sometimes,” he paused, ruffling his wet hair with the towel, “but he’s not dumb. He knows when to stop, when it gets too dangerous. Besides Pope’s with him, he couldn’t be in safer hands.”
“Thank you J. That, um, that made me feel better.”
Her hand was resting on his shoulder. Her touch was warm against his bare skin, sending small ripples of goosebumps throughout his body. A soft smile was drawn onto her lips, her cheeks slightly flushed by a sunburn and her eyes glinting in the darkness of the night. She was so beautiful, it was almost painful. It made him feel warm and fuzzy inside.
“Do you mind staying with me?” asked y/n with a small voice. “At least until John B comes back.”
“Sure.” A smile stretched itself onto his lips. “Wasn’t planning on going home anyway.”
“So,” he got up from the couch, removing his dirty shoes, “wanna go in and watch a movie before the power goes out?”
“Can we watch Peter Pan?”
“Peter Pan it is.”
And as JJ disappeared into the warmth and comfort of the château, y/n’s smile grew even bigger. She was so deeply in love with him, how could he not see it.
It’s hazardous to breathe... [GNR Mad Max AU, pt. 1]
This is the first half of a AU inspired by the movie Mad Max: Fury Road that @smokeandmirrorz and I came up with after he posted some awesome art for a Mad Max AU!  This oneshot very loosely follows the plot of the movie, it may make less sense if you haven’t seen the film. I split it into two parts so it would be more readable on tumblr, the second part is here and the whole fic is also on AO3.
*Contains mpreg, character death, and plenty of unpleasant things from the Mad Max universe, including implied/referenced sexual violence, some regular violence/gore (more so in the second part), and Immortan Joe.*
----
It wasn't often that the wives were brought outside their chamber.  Less often still that Steven got to be present when they were – so he considered himself lucky to be in the same room when the Immortan's only surviving wife emerged from the biodome to watch Immortan Joe send off his top Imperator on a mission to recruit more valuable full-lives after the untimely deaths of his other two wives.
It was a little known truth that Steven and Slash had history.  'Little known,' because if the Immortan caught wind that the two had become close when Slash was first brought to the Citadel and Steven was just a War Pup, he would be toast.  As little as they'd talked in the years since then, Steven still considered Slash... if not a friend, at least an acquaintance.  And that's more than he could say about his fellow War Boys.
Being allowed in the same room as Slash was the first step to reigniting their friendship. Now, if only Slash would acknowledge him...
"Steven." Slash's voice was barely loud enough to hear.
"Yes?" Steven perked up, encouraged that Slash hadn't forgotten about him after all.
"I need you to do something for me."  Steven nodded eagerly.  "I need you to go to Imperator Stradlin, and tell him to come visit me as soon as possible.  Can you do that?"
"Of course.  Anything for the Immortan!"
It wasn't for the Immortan, but Steven didn't need to know that.
"One more thing – It's top secret.  You can't say a word to anyone else, alright?"
--
Getting to the wive's chamber wasn't hard for Izzy: all he had to do was convince the guards he was on official business, and then once he was inside the vault, the soundproof walls would take care of the rest.  All the same, he did not have a good feeling about this "meeting."  Whatever was going on, it was going to be trouble...
The thick vault door swung open, revealing a scene straight out of a dream, so serene it seemed impossible that it could exist in the same world as things like gas wars, and tumors, and the Wasteland.
Sunlight streamed through huge semi-opaque windows and illuminated the smooth sandstone walls.  Green plants and relics of the old world surrounded a pool of crystal-clear water.  And in the center of it all, clothed in the purest white, was the Immortan's most prized treasure:
"Slash... the Desired."
"Imperator."  The wife looked him dead in the eye; his hair was restrained in a ponytail and draped with the same white fabric as the rest of his body.  It was the first time Izzy had ever seen Slash's face completely clear of dark curls, and the first time he'd seen him with enough clothing to cover the rest of his skin.
“Why did you ask me to come here? Does Joe want something from me?”
Slash’s mouth twitched into a frown at the name, but he responded in a carefully level tone:
“I have a proposition for you.”
Izzy raised an eyebrow. What could a wife possibly have to offer him? Besides the obvious, of course, and that... that was more trouble than it was worth.
“I can’t stay here any longer,” Slash explained.
“You’re crazy if you think he’ll just let you leave,” Izzy replied with a startled laugh. It was inconceivable, but Slash was looking at him with complete sincerity.
“He won’t. But you want to leave too.”
“Do I?” He did, but Slash definitely wasn’t supposed to know that.
“Please, you hate it here, it’s obvious.  You want to leave, and I want you to take me with you."
“Fucking hell – don't you think I would have left by now if I could?  And why would I help you anyway?  How do I know you're not just testing my loyalty to the Immortan?"
"Don't be ridiculous.  Me, doing favors for Joe?"
"Alright, fine. Then what if I betray you? I could be rewarded for... keeping the Immortan's property safe."
"What if I tell everyone you took advantage of the Immortan's absence to take his one and only wife for a test drive?"
"Fuck. You're not as pure as we've been led to believe, are you?"
Slash snorted.  "Not by half."
"But that doesn't change anything.  The Immortan would rip my throat out with his horse teeth for trying to steal one of his breeders –"
“Don’t call me that!” Slash snapped.
For a moment, Izzy was reminded of a younger Slash, fresh from the Wasteland and ready to bite at anything that got too close.
But Slash quickly composed himself, trying and not entirely succeeding to recapture an air of calm assertiveness.  "Look, just... Just think about it, alright?  We have a chance, I know we do, and really... How much more of this do you think you can take?"
Izzy sighed. "I'll think about it," he conceded.
"Thank you."
Slash did his best to hide his disappointment, and Izzy wasn't about to stick around and make things worse by trying to console him.  He turned around to leave the wives' sanctum, but hesitated before he reached the doorway.
"Slash... What really happened to the other Wives?"
"One... One miscarried. The Immortan wasn’t happy about that. The other tried to..." his lips faltered at the worst profanity in the Citadel, "... abort her pregnancy, it didn't end well. The Organic Mechanic couldn't do anything but give her something for the pain.  They give us a serum, sometimes, to help us sleep.  I gave her my dose."
--
The scouting party brought back a feral! they said.  Full-life and raving mad, driving an Interceptor, can you believe it?
No, Izzy couldn't believe it.  Couldn't believe that Axl Rose, MFP legend turned Road Warrior, could get taken down by a pack of half-dead War Boys.  But the proof was in front of him, shivering in a cage, starving and in dire need of a shave.
"...I-Izzy?"
His voice was exactly the same as it always was, the respirator that Izzy cobbled together a lifetime ago couldn't hide the low timber that sometimes still appeared in his dreams.
He'd made a mistake when he thought he could play it safe at the Citadel.  He should have listened when Axl told him they were better off on their own.  The Citadel was a shrine to depravity, and he wouldn't let Axl become another one of its victims – he needed to get them out of the tower walls and far away as soon as possible. It would be a challenge to escape unnoticed... but Izzy knew the perfect distraction.
--
"I'll make a deal with you, Slash."
Slash didn't have the decency to look shocked when Izzy barged into the biodome uninvited – or the decency to put on the thin white shirt that lay discarded on the floor.
Actually, Izzy was the one looking shocked when his eyes fell on Slash’s bare belly and his carefully planned proposition died in his throat.
“What’s the deal?” Slash asked, but Izzy was more concerned with his unfortunate new realization:
“You didn’t tell me you were pregnant! What were you thinking, asking me to help you? The Immortan is going to shred me to pieces!”
“He’d shred you anyway, this won’t change anything,” Slash gritted out. Pregnant or not, there was no way he was about to let Izzy back out, not now. “What’s the deal, Stradlin?”
Izzy hated to be caught off guard, but he could use this to their advantage.  Joe would never risk hurting a potential heir, making Slash an even better shield than before.  And once he and Axl split off, there was no way Joe would waste time and resources going after a twice-disgraced Imperator and a feral bloodbag before he got his pregnant wife back, giving them a valuable head start – if it came to that.
"I'll take you with me on my next supply run.  Ten days from now.  We'll go to the Buzzards' territory, trade guzzoline for another vehicle.  Then we part ways, got it?  I'll get you out of here but I'm not babysitting you or your sprog for the rest of my life."
"You don't want to get caught with me, you mean.  Stopping to deal with the Buzzards will give the Immortan time to catch up to us.  I'm fucked on my own."
Izzy didn't respond, and tried to look like it didn't matter to him whether Slash took his offer.
"Fine.  If they catch up... At least I'll die historic on the Fury Road," Slash said with a sardonic smile.  "But I have a request – I need you to find me a driver.  Someone who doesn't serve the Citadel, someone no one will notice is missing."
"There is no one like that."
"Really?  All those people down there, and none of them can operate a car?"
"If they could, they wouldn't be there."
"There must be someone," Slash insisted.  Izzy sighed.
"I'll see what I can do in ten days.  But what the hell do you need them for?"
"Well... I can't drive."
--
On his third visit, Izzy had spent enough time in the biodome to say that stepping inside the pristine vault always made him feel like a dirty rag, used to wipe away sweat and grime then left out to stiffen in the dusty waste.
But if he was a dirty rag, then Duff was roadkill.  He was a half-life, one of the Wretched who clung to the sides of the Citadel like barnacles, bathing in dust while the Immortan bathed in Mother's Milk.  He was lanky – no, skeletal, nothing but sunburned skin and bone.  He carried the Wasteland with him wherever he went, tracking dust with each step.  Izzy bit down on the irrational urge to warn him not to touch anything in the vault.
The black leather collar around his neck marked him as a former denizen of Gas Town, one who had likely outlived his usefulness if his rickety prosthetic leg and the cluster of nasty tumors half-hidden by his hair had anything to say about it.  Clearly, he was in no shape to labor in the refinery.  Rumor had it that The People Eater was a cannibal – as his name suggested – but evidently Duff had escaped that fate, perhaps because he had no meat on his bones to speak of, and instead sought out clean water, abundant food, and fresh air at the Citadel.  Hah.
Slash stared at them over his shoulder, wide-eyed and seated in the shallow pool in the center of the room.  Tiny bottles lined the edge of the pool, and the scent of flowers wafted in the air.
"A bath? Now, really?"
"It might be the last chance I get," Slash countered, but he rose from the water, the beads on his skin already drying in the inescapable desert heat.  Izzy averted his eyes as Slash wrapped a length of gauzy white cloth around his waist, tugged a loose shirt over his head, and bent forward to twist another cloth around his damp hair.  Then, finally, he turned to face his guests. "Is this...?"
"This is Duff, the Wretched.  Not a War Boy.  He came from Gas Town, so he can drive."
"Good."  Duff was staring at Slash like a mirage, but Slash knew how to get on a person's good side: "Do you want some water, Duff?"
--
"How the fuck did you get in here?!" In a heartbeat, Izzy's handgun was aimed at the War Boy's head.  He saw movement out of the corner of his eye.  "Slash, get away from him."
"No! You can't kill Steven!"
"He knows too much, he's a liability.  Kill him and let's go," Axl advised.
"No! Stradlin, who even is this guy?" Slash demanded, but once again, he received no explanation.
"Slash, what's going on, where are you going? Please don't leave me!"
"Steven, I –"
"Take me with you! I can help!"
"Slash, I'm serious.  Step away." Izzy inched closer, his gun unwavering.  War Boys were unpredictable, Kami-crazy.  You never knew what they might do when backed into a corner.
But Slash was crazier – he pushed Steven back, placing himself between Izzy and his target.  Izzy recognized the steely glint in his eyes before Slash even spoke: "He's coming with us."
--
They were curled up in the hold of the War Rig, surrounded by food and supplies that would never make it to Gas Town like they were supposed to.  Duff was happily munching away at a carrot, and Slash was sitting with his legs curled up to his chest.
"Are you scared?" Duff asked.
"... Yes," Slash admitted, barely audible over the roaring engine.  "Are you?"
"No."
"Why not?  If we get caught, you'll be punished too, for helping me.  And he doesn't care about taking you alive."
Duff shrugged.  "It doesn't really matter, does it?  I've got a few months left, at best."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be.  I've had my whole life to come to terms with it.  Well, half-life."
It was a terribly morbid joke, but Slash still laughed.
“So... You’re not afraid of anything, then?”
“Well, I don’t know – When Izzy brought me to you, I was scared. It was like he’d taken me out of the real world and dropped me in a fantasy. I thought if I touched anything, I’d destroy it; if I spoke, I’d break the spell and wake up in the Wasteland, half dead with a crow pecking at my tongue. I thought if I got too close to you, I'd pass on my illness, and if I looked at you too long, I'd go mad and start believing in things like beauty and health and the goodness of humanity."
Slash could have laughed at the momentous gap between Duff's perception of the biodome and his own.  Instead, when Duff finished his recollection, Slash crawled across the middle of the hold and pressed himself against Duff's side.
Duff tried to scoot away, but Slash entangled him with the soft touch of fine cloth and uncalloused hands. He wrapped his arms around Duff’s thin torso and laid his head on his shoulder.
“No, don't go.  You don't have to be scared, Duff...  You're the cleanest person to touch me in a long time."
Hesitantly, Duff reached up and let his good hand rest on Slash’s back. Slash’s hair brushed against his collar, even softer than his clothes, and when Duff breathed deeply he could still make out the sweet scent that filled the room when they first met.
For a moment, Duff let himself get lost in the fantasy world that still surrounded Slash, even in the hold of the War Rig, miles from the Citadel. He could forget about the danger they were in, the cruelty they’d experienced, and even the ticking time bombs in his own flesh.
“Do you think your baby will survive?”
“I don’t know.” Slash didn’t sound optimistic, he toyed with his sleeve and avoided Duff’s gaze.
“I’ve never seen a completely healthy baby before, I didn’t think it was possible. But then I saw you, and you’re perfect, so maybe...”
Slash scoffed.
“The Immortan is toxic. He taints everything: the water, the people... and me. If I was ever perfect, I’m sure as hell not anymore, and neither is this baby.”
Duff hugged Slash closer, and slid a hand down to his belly.
“We’ll see.”
For the Summer of Whump Day 7 - Sunburn
The best part about having free run of Tony Stark’s penthouse in the Tower is the Olympic sized pool that overlooks all of Manhattan. Peter could happily spend the whole summer here.
Relationships: Peter Parker & Tony Stark
Characters: Peter Parker, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner
TW: Teenage Dumbassery
Read on AO3 or below the line break.
“Why are you wearing the Armani?” Peter asked, pushing the pair of battered bodega sunglasses he had been using for the past two years up to sit in his chlorine damp hair and squinting as his eyes adjusted to the dimmed lights of the penthouse. FRIDAY closed the automatic door to the balcony and pool behind him.
“First of all this is Tom Ford how dare you,” Tony said, pointing at him with the ‘dad finger’ but not looking up from his rapid texting. “Second of all I’m wearing the Tom Ford, not Armani you absolute heathen, because I have to step into a couple of meetings this afternoon.”
Peter hummed in confusion, taking a bottle of cold Gatorade (the red one because it was clearly the best flavor) from the fridge and chugging it before sitting on one of the barstools. Tony flicked his eyes away from his phone to glare at the puddle dripping off Peter’s swim trunks pointedly – Peter just smirked at him and cracked open the second bottle he had pulled from the fridge, sipping on it slowly. “I thought you were playing hooky all week?” Peter teased, referencing the plan Tony had laid out earlier in the week to do absolutely nothing of value while Pepper was out of town.
“That was the plan,” Tony conceded, tucking his phone into his inner jacket pocket and then fussing with the immaculate pocket square. “Pepper was supposed to land thirty minutes ago but she had to divert her plane to our LA office for… something. Honestly I wasn’t paying attention.”
“And that leads to you going to meetings?” Peter asked with a raised brow.
“Apparently,” Tony groused, pulling the colorful beach towel from around Peter’s neck and dropping it to the floor to soak up the puddle forming under the barstool. “Sorry buddy – I know I promised a week of fun bullshit but I think we both would prefer that I keep my head attached to my body so…”
“It’s fine,” Peter brushed off and it really was. To be honest, he was still tired from their thirty hour workshop bonanza and he could do with a nap. It was a pleasant day for June in New York with a good breeze and some light cloud cover – a nap on one of the obscenely large pool floats sounded heavenly. “I was thinking about napping anyway.”
Tony’s brow furrowed for a second before his hand darted out to land on Peter’s forehead. Peter batted his hand away, narrowly avoiding falling off the stool. “You don’t feel warm. Are you sick? FRI is the kid sick?”
“All vitals within normal limits Boss,” FRIDAY answered, almost sounding amused.
“I’m not sick! Teenagers can enjoy naps you know.” Peter protested, dodging another of his mentor’s attempts to check him for a fever. “It’s pretty much our MO actually.”
Tony rolled his eyes before slipping his tinted AR sunglasses onto his face. “Oh to be young again,” he said sarcastically, gathering up a couple thin files and his StarkPad, tucking his phone into his inner jacket pocket. “You sure you’ll be okay for a few hours?”
“Yes, Tony, jeez.” Peter said with an exaggerated eye roll.
“Oh joy, teenage snark. Aren’t I lucky?” His mentor questioned as he ruffled Peter’s hair into disarray, flinging little water droplets on the counter top and causing the loose curls to tighten up more as they dried. “I’ll be back in time for dinner. Want to grill?”
“Sounds good,” Peter said with a smile, finishing off his second drink and tossing the bottle in the recycling and waving as Tony entered the elevator. Peter let out a large yawn and stretched, sighing happily as his back popped and realigned, before hopping of the stool to gather his towel off the floor and get a couple bottles of water from the fridge.
The sun was bright and warm as he stepped back out onto the pool deck and Peter luxuriated in its warmth, momentarily blinded – he hated the cold more than anything and loved being out in the heat. It took him a few minutes to pick his pool float, Tony had collected an obscene number of ridiculous ones over the past month, but he eventually decided on the watermelon one for its large round shape. He loaded it up with his water, towel and sunscreen before pushing it into the pool and following it with a splash.
He agilely climbed up to sit in the middle and took the bottle of sunscreen, spraying on another protective layer before wadding his towel into a lumpy pillow and face planting into it. “Hey FRI?”
“Yes Peter?” FRIDAY’s voice asked from the waterproof speakers situated around the pool.
“Can you play my lofi playlist?” He nearly slurred, already half asleep.
“No problem Peter,” she answered before the soft music poured from the speakers and Peter let out a sigh before fully relaxing. There was truly nothing better than a nice warm nap out in the sun. The gentle rocking of the water was quick to put him into some of the best sleep of his life.
————————————————
“Peter? Peter! Wake up kiddo!”
Peter groaned, his body stiff and tight and hot and he cracked open his crusty eyes to stare at the edge of the pool. “T’ny?” He croaked out, mouth impossibly dry and vision blurred.
“Yes, Jesus, you really cooked yourself buddy. Can you paddle over here?” Tony was looking at him with worried eyes, pulling his jacket off and slipping out of his Italian leather loafers.
“Come over there?” Peter questioned, confused. The sun had sunk behind the tower and the rooftop was now covered in shade and Peter shivered. Why was it so cold?
“Pete focus up now. I need you to come to me.” Tony said, his voice patient but with the clear undercurrent of concern that he used when Peter had gotten himself into some form of trouble.
“Okay,” Peter grunted. He tried to shift his heavy arms and then gasped in pain, clenching his eyes shut. “Ouchies,” he mumbled, not making any effort to move again. A splash sounded and Peter opened his eyes to see Tony in the water with him, efficiently swimming over to his ridiculous pool float. “But Tom Ford,” Peter protested dumbly.
“This was last seasons suit anyway,” Tony dismissed as he reached the edge of the float, treading water. “I’m gonna help you get into the water Petey – you’re way too hot. It’s not going to feel all that great but you need to trust me alright?”
“You’re Iron Man,” Peter agreed, groggy. “Trust you.”
“Good to know buddy,” Tony said as he carefully reached out and put his arms under Peter’s chest. Peter let out a gasp as his mentor’s wet sleeve rubbed against his sensitive arm but kept his body limp and let Tony maneuver him to the edge of the float while barely keeping it from tipping completely over on them both. “Alright kiddo, take a deep breath for me and hold it okay?”
“Yeah,” Peter grunted before pulling in a large gulp of air and squeezing his eyes shut. To his benefit, Tony was fast – he lifted Peter off the float and dumped him into the water before hooking his forearms under Peter’s armpits and pulling his head up above water again. Peter coughed as he surfaced, more awake and aware now, and really feeling just how truly fucked he was. His skin from the back of his neck down was tight and burning and he remained limp to not stress out the damaged skin any more. “That sucked.”
“Sure did,” Tony agreed, carefully paddling the both of them to the shallow end of the pool where a gentle incline would lead back up to the pool deck. “Think you can walk if I help you?”
“Maybe,” Peter answered, but did adjust himself in the water so he was floating next to Tony with his arm wrapped around the man’s shoulder and Tony’s arm wrapped around his waist just below the edge of his swim trunks to prevent him from touching the tender skin of his back. Exiting the pool was difficult since Peter realized he had definitely burned the bottoms of his feet but, with Tony’s help, he was able to limp out of the pool and towards the penthouse door.
“We’ve gotta get you in some oatmeal,” Tony told him as they entered the living room. The cool air from the AC made Peter shiver but the cool polished concrete floor felt like heaven on the soles of his feet.
“Why oatmeal?” Peter asked, letting Tony steer him down the hall and past his own bedroom towards the master bedroom and into Tony’s own ridiculously huge bathroom.
“It’s an anti-inflammatory,” Tony told him as they entered the bathroom. The large porcelain tub that could probably fit seven or eight full grown men was filling with tepid water mixed with oatmeal – clearly FRIDAY had been listening to their conversation and had acted accordingly. Well that or Peter had missed when Tony had asked her to set it up.
It took some maneuvering, but, soon, Peter was lying face down in the tub, his head pillowed on a pile of soft towels with Tony applying damp washcloths soaked in the cool water and oatmeal to the parts of his back that weren’t submerged in the water. Peter shivered violently once, his failing thermoregulating attempting and not succeeding in functioning, before he just lay, missable, in the tub.
“Close your eyes,” Tony said, wetting another washcloth in the sink with clean water only and wiping his face down. He frowned as his hand ran over Peter’s forehead and he draped the cloth over Peter’s face and eyes to cool the reddened skin. “You’ve got quite the fever brewing Webs.”
“I just wanted a nap,” Peter moaned and he heard Tony let out a little sad sounding chuckle.
“I know. Just relax and try to cool down for now,” and then he stood up and walked to the door. “I’m going to grab you some dry shorts and get the bed set up. Try not to drown.” It took more effort than Peter thought it would but flipping Tony off over the lip of the tub was totally worth it.
He fell into a light doze from there – drifting off as the stinging in his back dulled down to a more comfortable level. “Oh Peter,” Bruce said from above him and Peter jerked in the tub, dislodging the washcloth from his face and causing his body to let out a sting of pain and protest. He let out a little grunt and Dr. Banner winced from above him. “Sorry Pete. I thought you heard me come in. You really burnt yourself.”
“I know,” Peter said, wanting to be irritated but too tired to feel much of anything. Bruce gave him a sad smile.
“According to FRIDAY your temp is down enough we can get you out,” Bruce told him as Tony leaned over the tub as well so both of them were staring down at him. Peter just blinked. “Let Tony and I do most of the work – you don’t want to stress your muscles. Once we can get you out and dried off I’ll get you started on some fluids and electrolytes and that should help some. And my aloe plant donated a couple of leaves to the cause.” Dr. Banner joked. Peter gave him a weak smile in response, not really looking forward the the execution part of Bruce’s plan.
Getting lifted out of the tub was nothing short of agony even though Tony and Bruce lifted him under his armpits again and left him leaning his chest heavily against the bathroom counter to keep as much weight off his feet as possible. Bruce pointedly left the room and Peter endured a few mortifying moments where his mentor had to help him dry off and change into a loose pair of athletic shorts that sat low on his hips so as to not interfere with the burn. He was going to have an awful tan line by the end of this he thought sadly, taking in the lobster colored skin of his back and neck.
Bruce crept back in moments after and had Peter lean his hip against the sink so that he could place the IV catheter into his forearm while standing – making it easier on both of them once they would get him settled into bed. The California king sized bed had been stripped down to just its fitted sheet and, with a little assistance, Peter did a controlled flop face first into the memory foam pillows, letting his eyes shut as he felt Bruce connect the IV line and the cool rush of fluids through his veins.
He was nearly out when a cold plop on his back tore his eyes back open in surprise and he felt immediate relief from his tight, hot skin where the wet mass had landed. “Feels good,” he slurred drowsily as a careful hand massaged the goop into his back. A second set was working on his tight calf muscles, loosening them up and easing the burn.
“Fresh aloe,” Dr. Banner told him. Nothing better for a sunburn.”
Peter hummed in agreement and let himself drift off, finally comfortable.
—————————————-
“I just wanted a nap,” Peter whined as he limped and hobbled into the kitchen of the penthouse almost three days later, Tony following a few steps behind to catch him if he fell over and relying on the walls and his ability to stick to anything to keep him from falling. “I wore sunscreen!”
“Clearly not enough,” his mentor told him, voice tight with irritation. Peter had been saying the same thing on repeat since he woke up from his nap and it was clearly grating the man’s nerves. Peter opened the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water, cracking it open and taking large gulps. Even days later and after Bruce pumped him full of fluids Peter still felt parched and dehydrated. “You know you’re supposed to reapply like every hour in direct sunlight and water right?”
“Well I do now,” Peter answered, leaning against the stove so he could take the weight off his legs. His skin still felt so tight that it felt like it may burst. And the blisters… best not to think about it. Tony clocked the movement.
“Time for more aloe,” he said pointedly, shooing Peter off toward his bedroom. “I’ll get it out of the freezer and be right behind you.”
“Thanks Mr. Stark,” Peter said as he hobbled away. He passed by the door to the pool, the water sparkling brightly in the mid-afternoon sun and he looked at it thoughtfully. “Redo next week,” he promised to himself. He’d just have to get FRIDAY to wake him up every hour next time. Besides, he needed to even out his tan.
Snail
Tumblr media
Disclaimer: I do not consider Jaehyun a fuckboy in the derogatory sense of the term, he’s just very flirty and cocky in this piece for entertaining purposes okay lol alright let’s go; also, no, the snail title has nothing to do with the sexy situation lol dw, it’s a cursed one but not that cursed Words: 5K Warnings: mention of blood (regarding a little cut on the hand, nothing serious) related to the plot not the sexy bits | manhandling and rough | oral (both) + swallowing + face fucking
As the floor trembled and your escargot went flying all the way until meeting the handsome face of a stranger, you promised yourself to learn how to say no more often. You had no idea why you accepted to be on a cruise in the middle of the Pacific. Wasn't the Pacific supposed to be, you know, pacific? Or were you just that clumsy?
Your mouth was open and it continued to grow ever wider at the look of one escargot sliding slowly on the man's eyes. He was standing there, with hands wide open in front of him as if someone splashed a bucket of cold water on his whole body. "I am-" you got closer with the first napkin you could find, "-mortified" you added, trying hard to build up courage and wipe the garlic off his nose. But you didn't manage to as he preferred to wipe his whole face with his palm instead. You watched him with a sorry and disgusted face, while awkwardly holding the fabric with both of your hands. Then he suddenly opened his eyes and gave you the most assassin of looks. His wet eyelashes accentuated the growing redness and his furrowed eyebrows created a deep, scary shadow. You gulped loudly and jolted as he slid the napkin from your fingers with a violent movement. "I apologize, I didn't-" you tried to speak again but as the man finished to wipe his face he turned his back to you and walked away throwing the napkin at your feet. "-mean to…" you whispered without completing the phrase as no one was there to listen to it anymore.
Your sister laughed loudly for a solid minute into the phone. You sighed but you felt the chuckle warm up your chest and you found yourself grinning as well. "I can imagine his face even if I don't know what he looks like-" she spoke again but choking on the words as another laughing fit interrupted her. You shook your head as if pretending to be disappointed by her behavior. "It was terrible. I've been here for 20 minutes and I've already made a fool out of myself," you commented. "Y/N, I know you don't like stuff like this, but that fundraising party is vital for the image of my company," your sister finally was able to catch her breath. You rested your elbows on the iron rails and looked down at the shining water. "Yes, don't worry, I can deal with all of this". "Just smile and shake hands and tell people who is giving the money you're giving," you listened to your sister's voice through the phone. The sun was so bright that it was almost difficult for you to keep your eyes open. You suddenly started to feel hot and tired, already socially exhausted after interacting with only one person. Turning around, you stared at the colorful clothes people were wearing, yellow, red, green, white, pink, bright blue and your head started to hurt. Everyone was chatting loudly, holding drinks, telling each other about their last investments, yachts, airplanes, jewelry, celebrity parties, vacation plans. What in the world would you talk with them about when your dress was $15 and your earrings probably plastic? You sighed again. "-and remember to talk to the fundraiser. He's a pain in the ass but rather charming if you know what buttons to press," you listened to your sister's last words while wondering what she said before that. "Alright, get well soon," you replied, eager to sit somewhere in the shade with a nice refreshing lemonade or something. You walked around the deck, thinking about how nice it would be to put your hot feet inside the cool water of the pool. But no, the fundraiser wanted a chic, semi-formal look for the party. As if anyone cares. You rolled your eyes, having a full-on conversation with yourself inside your mind, hovering over the refreshments. You poured yourself whatever looked fresh and not too sweet and downed it all. It was only when you turned around, hearing the mic being hit as if someone was trying to grab everyone’s attention that you realized you just had a big ass glass of alcohol. “Thank you for being here,” said the man. He was on top of the small stage from where the live band was providing people with background noise. People clapped and you imitated them, trying to walk at the front and see the fundraiser’s face. Finally, he was speaking. Afterwards, it wouldn’t be that weird to just go inside your cabin and chill for the rest of the day until dinner, would it? You “sorry, uhm, excuse me, haha, mind if I just-, thank you” ed you way until being able to see the man’s feet. First thing: boat shoes. Okay, you were on a boat, kind of, but, honestly? Come on. Then you raised your eyes to see his cream shorts and sighed. In the end you eyed his red shirt with black palms on it. What a rollercoaster. But it wasn’t until you saw his face that you felt like falling down.  “Snail man!” you gasped covering your mouth with your hand. Curious eyes looked at you from left and right and the man himself stopped from talking and looked down at you. You didn’t yell that just now, did you? Now you were definitely going to be thrown off the ship. Snail man’s eyes were firing but his lips smiled when he cleared his throat and just continued the monologue as if you were a little fly not worth his attention. You pressed your lips together, hoping that your warm cheeks would be mistaken for sunburns instead of killing mortification. After everything was finished and the band started playing their music again, you debated whether talking to the fundraiser or not. He didn’t look very pleased to see you and you were afraid you were going to embarrass yourself even further, but your conscience didn’t let you just run away. You didn’t apologize properly and your sister would be upset that you didn’t talk to him at all. “Uhm, excuse me,” you spoke to him, rising your hand a little as when you’re too shy to call the waitress to ask for more breadsticks. He turned his head to look at you, one hand in his pocket and the other one holding a glass of champagne. His eyebrows got furrowed very quickly and you sensed that he was doing everything in his power to not roll his eyes. “Ah, snail woman herself,” he commented with a dry voice. You walked towards him hurriedly as if glad he gave you a chance to talk to him. “I wanted to properly apologize for the incident. I didn’t do it on purpose… uh…” you knew his name was Jung Jaehyun but he was too young for you to use honorifics with him. At the same time, he definitely looked like someone wanting to be called Sir. He sighed. “Call me Mr. Jung,” he told you. Yep. “Mr. Jung,” you repeated. He sipped on his drink again. You stared. Uhm?? He should tell you that he’s forgiving you now, right? That’s how human interactions work. I’m sorry. Oh no, it’s alright. “Is there something else you wanted to tell me?” he spoke after the awkward pause. Was there something else you had to tell him? You were kind of panicking. How do rich people talk? “I am Y/N?” you question, hoping it was what he wanted to hear. Nice to meet you Y/N, let’s just pretend that we didn’t have an abrupt first contact and let me help you feel less embarrassed. But no. He laughed at you. Yeah. Just like that. He laughed loudly for everyone to hear while your whole face got even more flushed than before.  The people that were close enough to you to hear your conversation, chuckled secretly, giving you weird stares.  You stared at his face.  If you didn’t feel a slow-boiling rage inside your chest, you might have considered his laugh charming, with those white teeth and deep dimples of his. But you were indeed starting to feel rather irritated. You did splatter him in buttery escargots and called him a snail, but you apologized and he definitely saw how mortified you were. Was this a way to make you pay? You looked around and felt the urge to hug yourself but you didn’t want to look more vulnerable that you actually were. “Okay, I’m sorry,” he talked again and you locked eyes with him again. He was still amused but a softer light adorned his eyes. “I’m messing with you. It’s fine. We’re cool, don’t worry about the snails,” he added, walking towards the refreshments table and looking around, unsure. You tailed him to be able to hear what he was saying. He was probably those types of people that were used to just walk around a company while six people surrounded him taking notes and helping him to take off his jacket. “Escargot,” you whispered. The man shrugged. “Snails that you eat. Besides, you called me snail man, not escargot man”. You took a glass of orange juice while he smelled some pastries. “Unless you wanted to say that I look like a snail,” he considered. “Oh no, you don’t look like one at all,” you assured him. “And how do I look?”. “Very handsome-” you sputtered before being able to stop yourself.  Okay, what the actual fuck? There were legit thousands of different ways to say it. You look fine. You look nice. You look good. Nonchalantly Y/N. More casual. As if you don’t care. No. You look very handsome. God. To the snail man that embarrassed you just 1 minute ago. Mr. Jung looked at you with the corner of his eye and smiled. Who knows how many times he has heard that before. “Honestly, you caught my eyes as you entered the cruise. I was there when you tripped because I was coming to talk to you,” he confessed. His tone was flat though as if he was talking about the weather. Your head jerked into his direction.  How does one reply to that? Thanks? Should you feel flattered? Okay, he was a very handsome man but if he needed only a piece of garlic thrown to his face to change his mind about you (when it was an accident) then you didn't want it. “I see,” you talked awkwardly while your hand tried to put down your empty glass. “Hey, caref-” Mr. Jung warned you but it was too late. Your nerves were so thin that you didn’t realize how fragile crystal glasses actually were. “Oh, shit-” you stared at the shattered pieces in your hand. One of your fingers was quick to bleed little beads of blood. “I am so sorry,” you apologized for what you felt was the 20th time that day. For no reason.  “Let me see,” Mr. Jung ordered, carefully cleaning the skin of any remaining fragments after you opened your hand. “I have a first aid kit in my suite. Let’s go,” he spoke again and taking your other hand he just walked away, as if completely sure you'd follow him. You tugged a little trying to convince him that you were fine. “It’s alright. I have a band-aid in my purse”. Mr. Jung just stared at you without saying a word as if his eyes were powerful enough to command you to do what he wanted. Not negotiable, they were saying. You softened your grip and let yourself be dragged away with a sigh.
His cabin didn’t look like yours at all. It was much more spacious and elegant. His bed was round and luxurious. It looked so sensual with its red and black bedding that you had to look away. Your heels got buried in the soft and thick rug placed in the middle of the floor. Mr. Jung’s perfume impregnated the whole room and you felt a little light-headed. He took you to the desk in front of the big windows that were showing the lazy waves underneath the cruise. Leaving you there to rest your hips on the wooden furniture, he opened a cabinet and retrieved what he needed to disinfect your cut. When he turned around and got closer you could see how his expression was serious and stern, no trace of the flirty light from before. Maybe he didn't want you to sue him for hurting yourself on his cruise? You breathed sharply through your teeth when he placed the cold and wet cotton on your finger and he raised his eyes to look at you. You returned the glare. “It’s alright,” you whispered, inciting him to go on. You had no idea why you kept your voice so low. Maybe because he was standing so close to you, almost touching your knees with his thighs, or maybe because he looked so concentrated, his plump lips slightly open and a little line between his eyebrows. As he was looking down on your hand, you looked at his face for the first time without feeling shy. You didn’t like to see blood or maybe it was the sun hitting your head but you suddenly felt all your limbs very weak.  When he was done and looked up, you swallowed and made sure to be caught gazing at the surroundings instead of the nude collarbones his unbuttoned shirt revealed. But maybe he wasn’t that stupid. “You look very pale,” he commented while raising a hand and brushing his thumb on your lower lip. “You also look a little shocked,” he added more amused when you jolted at his touch. Yeah, because you’re touching me, not because of the cut.  What was he doing? Do rich people think that they own people as well? You tried to express that with your eyes but he looked unfazed as if doing that was as easy and normal as to shake someone’s hand. You knew you had to move away, tell him that you just need to get some rest, maybe lay down for a bit. But your limbs wouldn’t move.  You cleared your throat. “Thank you,” you murmured moving your hand as to indicate what you were referring to.  Mr. Jung was just staring, apparently not used to reply to gratitude, eyes slightly narrowed as if analyzing you, then they went down and openly looked at your breasts.
Okay.  Alright. You didn’t wear any bra because it would have ruined the dress silhouette and you were already anxious out of your mind wondering if your nipples would show or not, so you definetly didn’t expect people to just staring at it. You gulped and let out a little nervous laugh while shifting your body, trying to do something that would distract him from staring at your boobs, not because you hated it, but because you suddenly felt exposed, shy and, God save us, maybe a little turned on. You shouldn’t have drunk that glass of alcohol. “Your suite is very nice. The color scheme is intense but charming-” you started to cary the conversation but felt your breath hitch as he got suddenly even closer as if not listening nor caring about what you were trying to discuss. “Please, don’t stop talking,” he purred. “I love your voice,” he added distracted.  “You’re not even listening to me,” you replied with a tiny sound. “Mm, you’re right, I’m focusing on other things right now,” he smiled finally lifting his gaze on your face. “Your dress has a blood spot right here,” he pointed to one of your nipples, touching it, definitely feeling how it got hard because of it. You quickly dropped your head to your chest to see. Damn it!, that was a big ass spot on your fucking bright yellow dress. “Why did you wait so long to tell me that?” you jerked your head up again.  He shrugged. “I got distracted”. And you knew what he meant with that. You rolled your eyes, crossing your arms on your chest and puffing your cheeks. He found that very funny and just laughed at you. Again. “I think I should go now,” you nodded to yourself as if building up the courage to get up. “Yeah”, Mr. Jung agreed. But you didn’t move nor did he. So, he tilted his head on the side and wetted his lips with the tip of his tongue,  getting as close as to whisper on your lips.  “Or maybe you’re waiting for me to help you get undressed?” he asked teasingly. His hands were pressed on the desk around your body, his arms feeling like a cage and his presence so intense that you physically shivered. “You- you should let me go,” you stuttered, even if you both already understood that you had no intention to go away. Mr. Jung let his dimples appear in a shiny smile. "What if I want to do something else?" he asked without breaking eye contact. You kept in a whimper, not used to hear people talking to you like that. "You'd have to at least buy me dinner first," you tried to joke and keep up with his vibe. "I'll fill you up so well that you won't want to eat anything else," he whispered and you've never felt your guts do what they just did ever before. Fuck.  "I-" you blinked unable to look at his eyes. What was happening? Why was the fundraiser flirting with you? Why weren't you already on your feet walking towards your cabin? Why were your fingers moving slowly to touch his wrist? Why did you were feeling the urge to let it brush his skin and follow the vein on his forearm until reaching the bicep then upon his shoulder, caressing it when it reached the soft part of the neck trying to understand if his pulse was beating as fast as yours or not. He let you do that as your eyes followed your hand and when it was close to his face you saw his jaw clench. You stopped.  "Go on," he ordered but you couldn't bring yourself to, feeling your cheeks suddenly burn. So he took your hand and forced it down on his chest, slowly, letting you feel his muscles underneath the thin shirt fabric, going down on his abdomen, making your breath hitch as he flexed his abs on your fingertips, not stopping, letting it slide on his cold belt until your palm was all the way on his turgid length. He pressed his hand on yours even harder, letting you understand what you were dealing with, not looking away from your face, loving your reactions. Oh, you were wet, fuck you were so wet. "Okay," you breathed out, "okay, okay, you won Mr. Jung". "But there is no game," he explained with a sly smile. "If you're trying to make me pay or embarrass me because of the incident, then I'm sorry again Mr. Jung-” you spoke trying to keep your composure that was holding itself on the thinnest thread ever. He chuckled. “I’m trying to tell you that I want to fuck you, miss Y/N,” he whispered against your ear, articulating every word, slowly, as if he was touching you already with his voice alone. You let out a tiny moan that became suddenly bigger as his tongue lightly traced the curve of your neck, making you stretch it to the side. Then he just bit down, hard, with no warning, sucking on the skin, grabbing your thighs, digging his fingers into your flesh and lifting you into his arms. You yelped and tightened your arms around his neck not expecting the movement and not expecting his throwing you on the bed either. You exhaled sharply as it knocked all of the air out of your lungs and he didn’t even give you a single second to breathe in again, that he was already on the bed, on his knees, between your legs. Oh, God. It’s about to happen. But he didn’t do what you thought he would do. His smile never flattered and his eyes never let you go while his palms caressed your legs slowly, from your calves, going underneath your knees, tickling your sensitive skin, then upon your thigh where the dress split started. You looked down at his hands and just gasped loudly when he held the fabric and just tore it apart. “It was ruined anyway, baby girl,” he assured you seeing your shocked expression. You jolted again when he touched your stomach and ripped your dress again, this time until the tear reached your chest and you felt the material sliding off your skin to the sides. Naked in one second, you shivered certain that your cheeks were burning. You wanted to say something, but you had no idea what should one say in these types of situations. “Would you help me take this off as well, babe?” Mr. Jung smiled. “I can’t possibly tear that apart,” you sat up shocked. Jaehyun’s deep laugh tickled your ears. “Just unbutton it, love, it’s enough,” he suggested and you obeyed lifting your hands to rest on his chest for a moment then slowly tackling the task. You felt Mr. Jung’s gaze on your body just as present as his fingers drawing little circles on your bare thighs. “You are so beautiful, miss Y/N,” he suddenly said making your hands tremble on the last button. His compliment didn’t linger in your mind too much though as the image in front of you knocked your thoughts out of your mind. You touched him, starting from the bottom, pressing your hands hard then going up scratching his skin with your nails. He breathed out as your fingers spread on his chest and you expected him to finally kiss you but he just raised one hand and cupped your face, feeling your cheek with his thumb then letting it descend on your neck, massaging your throat, applying some pressure, enough for you to open your lips in an attempt to breath better. Your legs squirmed around him, trying hard to get together, indicating him that something between them needed attention. But he just smiled and didn’t budge. His hand continued to go down on your body until reaching your soft breasts, cupping them, feeling the smoothness of your skin and the plumpness of your hard nipples. You whined at the touch and your eyes implored him to go faster. “Be a good girl for me, or I will stop,” he warned you softly. “You want me to stop?” You shook your head quickly, so easy to submit yourself to him. He smiled as if pleased and let your breasts go to unbuckle his belt. His pace was so calm and slow, so different from just a minute ago when he literally ripped your clothes off your body. He was a surprise and your core felt even wetter at the thought of what he might do next. When he let his thick cock out, pumping it slowly, licking his lips teasingly, you thought he wanted you to go down on him, and oh, you were so eager to do it, letting your tongue feel his veins and taste his flavour.  But he clicked his tongue with a dimpled smile as if reading your mind and directed his length on your breasts, hitting your nipples with the tip of his cock, little drops of precum smearing on them, making both of your breaths hitch. You looked down at how it moved and promptly grabbed your chest, tightening it around him, opening your mouth and letting a trail of saliva fall on it. Jaehyun hummed appreciatively and moved his hips between our breasts, loving the way your skin felt on his hot cock, grunting every now and then and biting his lower lip. You, on the other hand, were panting loudly, soon shut up by his fingers shoved inside your mouth to suck on them. Your tongue wet them well while looking up at him with lusty eyes as if asking if you were being a good girl or not. The answer was that you were so good that he had to feel that tongue on his cock as well. So he just grabbed your head by the nape and filled your mouth all in one go, hitting the back of your throat with the hottest groan you’ve heard a man do before. “Oh- oh fuck, fuck-” he managed to say as his adam apple went up and down, swallowing hard. He was so hot, rolling himself on your tongue, chocking you, thrusting fast, holding your face with both of his hands, staring down at how his cock disappeared between your lips. You whined at his size and you would have let him know that it was too much if he didn’t release right at that moment with a shudder of his hips. His expression was pained from pleasure and he tried to pull out but you grabbed his sides to keep him in place and he cursed again, feeling his cum slide down your throat as you swallowed around him, adding to the euphoria. A little trail of it came out your lips and down your chin that you promptly collected with your finger and licked off, slowly, not breaking eye contact.  “You are driving me fucking crazy,” his voice came out deep and dangerous just like the look in his dark eyes and just like his manners.  He grabbed your shoulders and pushed you down on your back but not giving you a second to catch your breath as you were already turned around on your stomach with a dull thud, his hands forcing you to get on all fours in front of him. Your panties were quickly dragged down your legs but your needy core wasn’t left bare too long as his tongue replaced the fabric, hugging your form tightly, vibrating restlessly on your bundle of nerves, smacking it by tugging it with his lip, caressing it with his thumb, stretching you out to fuck you with his fingers. Previously upright on your hands you just had to let yourself fall on the mattress, not having a single ounce of force in your arms anymore, pressing your face on the covers, mumbling nonsense as Jaehyun was sending you into pure bliss. His teeth followed his tongue on your thigh, biting the soft flesh and sucking on it hard, adding to the sensation his fingers provided so deep inside of you. “S-sir,” you whimpered breathlessly, “don’t stop, please,” you begged. And he didn’t. “Does it feel good, princess?” he asked before going back to tease your clit.  “Y-yes, yes, please, I want-” you whispered.  He knew what you wanted.  He kept on pumping your core fast even when you let out a high pitched sound, gripping the sheets underneath you and squirming restlessly. Your legs were still shaking in spasms when he rolled your over on your back again digging his fingers into your skin, not worried about leaving marks. You looked at him and whined seeing his cocky smile, knowing that nothing good would come out of it. Sprawled like that in front of him, letting him look at every inch of your body in broad sunlight, with your head clearer thanks to the explosive orgasm you’ve just had, you let your hands cover your breasts as if helping to cover you a little. A little tingle of shame caressed your spine and you couldn’t bear to look at Jaehyun in the eyes. He smiled placing his hands on your waist and dragging your body towards him, opening your legs around his hips with a rough movement. “Are you getting embarrassed for behaving like a little slut just now, angel?” he teased you, caressing your thighs. “Let me see everything, put your hands away,” he ordered. You looked at his face for a brief moment and gulped, nervous, still very turned on but so shy at the same time.  “I said,” he lowered his voice by a few notes, making your breath quicken, “put your hands away,” he added, intimidating as never before.  His expression was lusty but dangerous and you were about to obey, but he didn’t have much patience. He came closer as lighting and grabbing your wrists, he pinned them above your head, keeping them down in an iron grip. His chest was almost touching your breasts and his cock was laying between your wet folds. Jaehyun started to slowly roll his hips and you felt him harden at every movement, twitching on your raw clit, making you jolt. You breathed on his lips, thin moans forming on your tongue, mind starting to get foggy again, your everything telling you to just let yourself go.  “Please- please I want-” you mumbled choking on your breath while his other hand traveled south, kneading your hip and pressing your leg against himself even harder. “Yes, darling?” he whispered back, pelvis moving at a slow pace, driving you crazy. “Please- I want to feel you inside,” you confessed with a tiny voice before suddenly losing all air in your lungs as he penetrated you in one go, burying himself deep inside, thrusting hard as to make your body shift on the bed sheets back and forth. “Like this, baby?” he asked with a broken voice. “You wanted this? To feel my cock stretch your sweet little pussy like this, huh?”. You tried to hum back but only high moans escaped your mouth as he was pressing so hard into you, isolating his pelvis movements as if hammering, making your toes curl and legs tighten, all of your muscles tensioned and twitching underneath his weight. “My little disobedient princess had the courage to ask for my cock? Now, you’re going to get it” he got up on his knees again, caressing your stomach then sliding down and rubbing your clit with his thumb.  You arched your back, eyes rolling back in your head, hands shifting while trying something to hold onto.  When you lifted your hips so close to coming undone yet again, he descended again, stopping with a deep thrust. Remaining still inside and holding you tight, he wrapped your body with his, squishing your breasts with his hard chest. You whined, clenching around him, so so close, please, you were so close. Against your neck, you heard him breathing heavily and chuckle before leaving wet kissed on your skin. Reaching your lips he thrust in again, pushing you into the mattress, repeating the same movement as before, knocking the air out of your lungs, making you moan as never before. You wanted him to move, you wanted him to continue to hit that sweet spot again and again until you would lose your fucking mind. But you had no force to articulate any words so you just wrapped his neck with your arms and dragged him down in your first kiss, letting your tongue communicate what you couldn’t say, whining and wincing, making him growl as you clenched around his throbbing cock while he let his hips move again until they lost rhythm.
Stuck in the Middle 7
It had been a few hours and Percy had taken a much needed nap under the watchful eye of his sweetheart, Ritz. Of course he had managed to fall asleep in the bandit's lap, his arms wrapped around Ritz's neck and his head on the blonde's shoulder.
Ritz enjoyed feeling the gentle rise and fall of Percy's body with each breath he took, the bandit did notice a slight shudder with each breath, the ranch hand must've been hit in the chest at some point. Ritz gently combed his fingers through the blood caked brown hair, slowly working tangles and knots out.
Those few hours were up as Ritz gave his sweetheart a soft shake until he finally awoke. The bandit pressed a butterfly kiss to Percy's lips as he tirefly grumbled about having to wake up.
"Have a nice rest, lover boy?" Ritz mumbled and kissed him again, "we should probably get ya all cleaned up, hmm?"
Percy reluctantly nodded and stayed where he was, arms embracing the love of his life.
"As much as it pains me, ya have to get off my lap." Ritz said with a light laugh and Percy gave an annoyed sigh before climbing off his boyfriend and crossing his arms. The ranch hand watched as his beloved got up and went over to his saddle that sat propped against a rock, he brought a canteen and one of his spare bandanas back over before he sat down again.
Ritz poured some water onto the bandana and gently began to wipe and scrub blood from his lover's face, he tried to be as careful as he could but there were so many bruises. He saw Percy wince and a few involuntary whimpers came from the boy's throat as Ritz cleaned off the blood and flaking skin from his sunburnt cheeks.
"I'm sorry Ritz… I think I bit off a lil more than I could chew. But, I knew you'd come back for me, buttercup."
"Don't apologize, loverboy. If this was anyone's fault, it was mine. Ya suffered cuz of my mistakes."
Percy let out a quiet hiss of pain as Ritz cleaned the blood from his nose that looked like it was from a bad nosebleed. The bandit gently dabbed the cool damp cloth against Percy's burnt cheeks, he watched the boy nearly sigh in relief.
"I coulda kicked their asses if they hadn't been cowards and tied my arms behind me. I did manage to beat up that Archie guy." Percy said confidently.
"Sweetheart, ah'm sure ya could've and by the looks of it, ya beat the shit outta him." Ritz said with a laugh as he could finally see the freckles he loved so dearly, peek through the bruises after the blood that had been covering them was wiped away.
Percy couldn't help but stare at his beloved, the determined look on his face and the clear line on his cheeks from where his hat shaded his face and where the sun hit it. He couldn't help but admire the beautiful whiskey brown eyes that darted around looking for the next scrape or patch of dried blood to clean. Now that he looked closer he could see dark circles under those maple eyes that indicated Ritz had barely slept these past few days, if at all.
"Have you slept at all, buttercup?"
"Not yet, ya were my top priority and besides, ah can sleep later." Ritz mumbled and leaned forward to press another kiss to Percy's chapped lips.
"Ritz, I know you told me not to apologize, but I at least want to thank you for coming back for me…" Percy muttered hesitantly.
"Darling ah would come back for ya everyone, even if the stars above decided ta fall, ah will always come back for ya." Ritz said gently and cupped Percy's face in his hand, being mindful of the purple bruises.
The ranch hand smiled and wrapped his arms around Ritz's neck and pressed a love soaked kiss to his boyfriend's lips. Ritz wrapped his arms around his beloved's waist and they fell backwards onto the dusty ground. Just loving the way that their bodies seemed to fit perfectly into each other's embrace. The world could wait while their time together seemed to make time slow, they were finally back together and intended to stay that way.
Some mountains and a dog part 3
Part 1
Part 2
Jaskier was snoring in his ear when he woke up the next morning, and Geralt had never felt more at peace.
No, that was a lie. He felt calm every time he got to enjoy moments like that, every time Jaskier reminded him how much he trusted him by simply falling asleep next to him. Geralt was about to get up and start packing up until he remembered that they had nothing to do – he could stay here and enjoy the moment.
He stayed still approximately thirty seconds before he got too restless and had to get up. He woke Jaskier up by doing so, and smiled as the other man grumbled about needing five more minutes. He would get them – they were in no hurry.
Once everything was packed and they had eaten, they started walking again.
The morning passed slowly. They were simply enjoying the warmth of the day, and the landscapes, which Jaskier had been commenting out loud. It was nice to hear the bard’s every thought about the things they encountered; Geralt couldn’t believe that after all he had gone through, Jaskier could still marvel at the beauty of a flower, at the way a bird sang. Geralt had once listened to him trying to whistle like a warbler.
It was…. nice, Geralt thought, to simply enjoy walking like this. No contracts to fulfill, no obligations; only him, Jaskier and Roach. Life would be simpler if every day looked like this one.
“Geralt,” Jaskier started, and Geralt glanced at him. “I’m hungry, do you think we could stop?”
Geralt hummed, looking around them for a good spot to rest.
“We’ll walk until that tree over there, then we’ll eat the things you packed.”
The tree was a big one, its leaves offering shade. It would protect them from the sun – Geralt, with his pale skin, was not protected from sunburn, as he had discovered. It amused Jaskier to no end, that somehow the mutations that changed his hair didn’t add the bonus of not having to fear the sun. It wasn’t a problem most of the time, since the sun wasn’t as vicious in the plains as it was here, but with no trees to protect him Geralt knew it was only a matter of time before his skin turned pink – he didn’t get mean sunburns, only moderated ones, but he still wanted to avoid it as much as possible.
They walked to the tree a little faster, now motivated by the thought of eating lunch.
“I bought dried apricots before we left the last town, I know you enjoy them, my dear. We’ll eat them for dessert, what do you think?”
Geralt nodded. Jaskier was thoughtful like that, reminding Geralt that sometimes life didn’t have to be only made of pain. Though with Jaskier by his side, it wasn’t a difficult thing to remember.
He loosely tied Roach to the tree, trusting her not to go too far – there was more than enough grass here, and she happily started to eat. He rejoined Jaskier where he was sitting; he was carefully pulling out their provisions from the bag he had stored them in. He handed Geralt a piece of smoked rabbit and passed him the waterskin.
A bee made its way towards them, landed on Jaskier’s knee and then took off again. Geralt looked at it as it flew away.
“It’s not so bad, isn’t it? To simply be here. I’d play a little, but to be frank I like being here and doing nothing.”
Chewing, Geralt didn’t reply. They ate the rest of their meal in silence and then they enjoyed the apricots, Jaskier thoughtfully looking at the meadow in front of them and Geralt looking at Jaskier.
“We could stay here,” Jaskier suggested, “until it isn’t so hot anymore.”
“You’re wearing your cloak,” Geralt replied, just because he knew it would annoy him.
“Ugh, Geralt, you know what I meant.”
He did.
“We could- read,” he tried.
“Read? I’m sorry dear, I haven’t taken any book with m-”
“I have,” Geralt cut him before losing his courage.
Jaskier looked at him, surprise coloring his face. Gods, Geralt loved him.
“I- saw you were reading it before we left Kaer Morhen, and it wasn’t finished, so I thought- I bought another one but the opportunity for you to read didn’t come up until now.”
“I- You- Really?”
“Really,” Geralt smiled, “Let me take it out of the bag, I’ll show you.”
He stood up, and removed his clothes from his bag; he had wrapped the book in an old shirt of his, to protect it from shocks and from the rain, should the leather not suffice.
“Here.”
Jaskier took it almost reverently and opened it to the first page, his cheeks still a bit red from the surprise.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged- You did it! Oh, Geralt, I-”
Geralt smiled at him, and came back to sit close to him. He had made Jaskier happy; he hadn’t known whether he would enjoy it, whether it had been a good idea, but to see Jaskier sitting next to the tree, his hands almost caressing the cover of the book, and looking at Geralt like this-
He had made the right choice. But the bard was still speechless, so he nudged him with his elbow before leaning his head against the trunk of the tree.
“Read to me?” he asked, closing his eyes.
He heard Jaskier moving around, probably trying to find a more comfortable position. Then he felt him leaning against his right side, and he smiled, still not opening his eyes. Jaskier tended to do that – getting close to Geralt whenever he could. He didn’t mean it like Geralt wished he did, but it was alright. Jaskier being here was more than enough, he didn’t care if their relationship was platonic or if it was – or if it was not.
“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife,” Jaskier started, and Geralt let himself fully relax.
He could hear the smile in Jaskier’s voice as he read on, and here, sitting in the shade of the tree next to the man he loved, Geralt thought that indeed, life wasn’t only made of pain.
***
“Say, Geralt…”
They had set up camp earlier that evening, Geralt not wanting to go on when the night was already falling around them – the mountains were nice, but if he had learned one thing during his life, it was that danger was always lurking and ready to reveal itself when you expected it the least. It wouldn’t have been a problem if he had been traveling alone, but his companion was too precious to risk it.
So settling camp early it was – not that Jaskier would know that Geralt could have gone on; he had started to stop traveling at night when Jaskier first joined him on his travels, first because he thought the bard wouldn’t be able to defend himself against whatever could have attacked them, and then because he didn’t want Jaskier to have to defend himself at all. His hands were made for playing the lute and braiding flowers in Roach’s mane, not for using a sword or his powers against something dangerous. No, that was Geralt’s job, and he was happy to do it if it meant that Jaskier was safe.
Wait, Jaskier had asked him something. He looked at the bard, who was currently lying on his bedroll, face turned towards the stars; Geralt liked to think that Jaskier’s face was illuminated by their light, but it more likely was the fire that was warming them up that was making shadows dance on his cheeks.
Apparently, Jaskier saw on Geralt’s face that he hadn’t heard because he repeated his question slowly, seemingly deliberating about which words to use.
“I said- are you… happy? That we’re here?”
Jaskier bit his lip, an obvious sign of nervousness. Geralt hummed, trying not to think about Jaskier’s mouth.
“Are you?” he asked in return, not to be difficult but because the answer mattered maybe more than his friend would think.
“Am I- You don’t get to do that, I swear, every time I ask something- Yes, you idiot, I am. Now, no getting out of this. Are you?”
If you are happy, then yes, of course I am, Geralt wanted to reply, felt the words burning his tongue as he did his best to hold them back. With you here, how could I not?, he tried to say.
“You’re here, so- yes,” he mumbled, eyes cast on the piece of wood he had been curving. Damn it, he had been so close.
But apparently it was enough, because Jaskier gasped. Geralt absolutely had to look up at that, and here Jaskier was, half-smiling to himself, cheeks red, eyes shining, still lying down but turned towards Geralt.
“Well- I’m glad,” Jaskier said, “I’m glad.”
Silence fell around them - a comfortable silence, one during which thinking about what to say next was not needed because enjoying the other’s presence was enough, a kind of silence that made you want to smile and close your eyes just to be able to enjoy it in its sheerest form.
Sure, there were things that were breaking it – Geralt could hear an animal running a bit far north from where they were, and of course insects were buzzing around them. It would have been overwhelming, but Geralt had found out long ago that focusing on Jaskier’s breath and heartbeat was enough to drown it all out. The very presence of the man was enough for Geralt to feel – well, good wasn’t a feeling, but Geralt had never really succeeded in naming what he was feeling.
Smiling was easier when Jaskier was with him – because Jaskier made him feel happy. Yes, happy, that was the word, Jaskier had had no idea what he had been asking Geralt. It had been like that even before the mountain – though he hadn’t realized how important Jaskier was until he faced the idea of losing him.
Losing Jaskier had always been what Geralt thought about. First he feared that the man would simply grow bored of him, his new fame requiring him to play in courts, away from the path, away from Geralt; then, when it had appeared that Jaskier wasn’t planning to leave, Geralt had feared the man’s mortality. He could defend Jaskier from monsters and at this point would have died to keep him safe, but Geralt couldn’t fight time itself. So when Jaskier had turned out to be as immortal as Geralt was – well. It meant that if Jaskier wouldn’t grow bored, wouldn’t die of old age, Geralt would lose him to his own incapacity of being able to talk.
Ironically, it had been his capacity of being able to talk that had almost made him lose Jaskier.
Jaskier started humming, effectively dissipating Geralt’s dark thoughts. All of that was in the past, he had apologized – no need to think back about it. Jaskier was here, with him, still the same after all these years spent together.
Geralt, on the other hand, had changed; where Jaskier had only lost his boyish features, Geralt had earned new scars. It might have bothered him if each of those new scars didn’t bring with it the fond memory of Jaskier tending to his wounds, frowning like he did when he was really focused on something. Jaskier was in every part of Geralt’s life – of course he was happy to be here with him.
“Geralt?”
He looked at Jaskier. The bard was sitting now, playing with his hands like he often did when he had nothing to occupy them with. Geralt longed to take these calloused yet soft hands in his, but he stayed where he was. He wasn’t allowed to do that, Jaskier was part of his family but- not like that. Which was fine, as they were already physically close – Jaskier would always sleep snuggled against his back, or steal his ale while leaning against Geralt’s side, and that was enough.
“Do you think- Well, I can’t read right now, not enough light, and the stars are just right here, do you think we could- watch them together?”
That would mean lying down next to Jaskier, so close and yet so far, his hands right there to be held – it would feel like torture.
It would also mean making Jaskier happy.
“Okay,” Geralt finally replied, putting down the thing he had been carving. He was trying to make it look like a cat, because Ciri had mentioned that she loved them, but right now it looked like- well, not a cat. But it was okay, he had all year to progress.
He stood up, checking the fire before sitting next to Jaskier, who beamed at him.
He’s smiling as if I have hung the moon and the stars, Geralt thought before snorting. It would make a great joke, if it didn’t reveal a bit too much about what he was truly feeling.
He carefully lay on his bedroll, making sure not to crush anything worthy – Jaskier had once sulked an entire evening because Geralt had inadvertently crushed a flower. How was he supposed to know that the yellow thing next to Jaskier’s bag was a flower and not a weed? Now Geralt didn’t dare to step on any colorful weed either.
Jaskier sighed, before lying back too. Geralt felt him hesitate, before a head carefully rested on his shoulder. It was nice, and Geralt allowed himself one smile.
“I read a book this winter,” Jaskier started, his voice carefully low, “about the constellations and how people had different names for the same ones.”
“Hmm?”
“Okay, so this one-”
Geralt wanted to close his eyes and listen to Jaskier talk, but he found himself unable to stop looking at the constellations Jaskier was showing him with his right hand. The left one was on top of Geralt’s right arm, as if to prevent him from standing up – as if Geralt would ever willingly go away from him. Silly bard.
They stayed up later than they usually did when they slept outside, Jaskier unable to stop talking about the stars and Geralt unwilling to stop listening to him.
If Jaskier’s hand found Geralt’s at some point, well. It was only because he felt cold. Nothing more to see here.
UNEARTHED by @nakamoto
for @11thsense (3.7K)
(There is a reason why Aidonsvalley stands alone, makes its own decisions, attracts and denies, takes and leaves. There is a reason why it has a heart of its own.)
On the door of the Church of St. Agnes, a page was stamped: “1 PETER 2:4-6 — As you come to him, the living Stone - rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him - you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For in Scripture it says: See, I lay a stone in Zion, a chosen and precious cornerstone, and the one who trusts in him will never be put to shame.”
A crimson thumbprint was displayed alongside the words, and Raheem didn’t know whether to take it as some extremely obvious omen or something that should be ignored. He shrugged and went on his way. He had things to do. Nothing necessary, of course.
Aidonsvalley attracted a healthy amount of tourists due to its strange nature. The sun appeared at dawn and left at dusk just like it did everywhere else in the world. Everything worked as it should, but evidently something was amiss. The land chose what it acquired and what it discarded. It chose what it claimed and what it dismissed. And if you did everything right, (and you had to—those who didn’t could never die, those who didn’t would wander and lead a life of toil forever) then the land embraced you warmly enough and you would never get to leave. Raheem had been claimed not too long ago. Partially because of his transformation when he was fifteen, partially for a reason he had not yet understood. That knowledge was long overdue.
Aidonsvalley loved the supernatural, he knew that much.
Despite the wonders it did for the town’s tourism, he couldn’t help but mess with the newcomers everytime they arrived. They marvelled at the aging billboards (“Look, honey, this is the ‘56 ad! From the D’Arcy era; you know I love my beverage trivia—”) and the churches at every corner, more churches than convenience stores. They usually arrived in the evening times when it was cooler, because that was when the neon electronic advertisements would light up. No one ever donated their used dreams, but they sure loved staring at it.
Raheem, from a folding chair situated near a rhododendron bush, noted that these particular tourists looked alike, but not so much that you could mistake them for siblings. They were both wiry and tall, limp blonde hair; one was pulled back in almost identical ponytails, while the other was closely and badly shaven. Diligently poring over the maps in their hands.
The couple peered at the statue before them—Edmund Aidon, the founder of the town. His image was said to be greatly exaggerated, as his biceps were larger than what seemed humanly possible, and his canines were unusually blunt. Still, he looked important, so tourists adored him.
The woman, the one with a fascination for old Coca Cola television advertisements, tapped lightly against Aidon’s thigh. Her partner asked, “Isn’t it magnificent?”
“I’m not too sure,” she said, giving it another light knock before straightening and snapping a photo. “Smile, Edmund Aidon. 1834 to 1911. Timor dei in terra. I think that’s his own personal motto, or maybe something for the town. You studied Latin in school, Geoff, what does that say?”
“All I got was ‘terra’,” he said with a shrug, “Land. And are you okay? Why are you obsessed with that thing?”
Raheem had never offered the statue anything other than a sidewards glance. The tourists in the area generally camped near the lake, hoping to catch sight of the legendary local siren (or something close to that—there wasn’t a word to accurately describe her). Or sometimes they lingered near one of the many churches, over-analysing the scripts hung to the doorposts or trying to catch a word or two from one of the sermons. A rumour had started spreading amongst the tourists a while ago of demons being summoned in church, the house of God being used as a cover. As a demon himself, Raheem knew that was untrue. But its unlikeliness didn’t stop the persistent, eager tourists.
If they were going to remain here, poking at the statue and conversing, they should spend some money on him and make themselves useful. Raheem continued listening to their conversation, considering whether he should use his influence. But unfortunately, he wasn’t really in the mood to make them both walk off the pier, hand in hand, and become April’s supper, or cause them to develop a sudden intense fascination with his father’s restaurant.
The woman turned to her partner. Raheem could see her face from here, all sunburned skin and worry in her eyes. She scratched at her crooked nose and gave the statue one last tap. “I don’t know. It feels hollow, almost. Forgive me for this, but slightly corrugated, even.”
“Don’t be ridiculous,” ‘Geoff’ said, not even bothering to check for himself. Idiot. “The guide says it’s made of marble. Marble doesn’t echo.”
“This does.” She sighed and stood up. “Whatever. We should head to the hotel now. I’m starving.”
It started with Alex losing sleep. Then his jaw would begin to grind against itself while he was both sleeping and awake. His eyes would redden and become sore, the skin on the tips of his fingers would begin ache before breaking and bleed in preparation of what would happen next.
It did not matter whether he was indoors or out, visible to the moon or hidden, awake or asleep. It was an inevitable part of his life. There would be a chanting in his head (run run run), the urge to find someone and pull them apart. Then there would be prey underneath his fingernails and between his teeth, blood would taste more like fear than copper, and the ground would move beneath his feet so quickly it would hear but beneath him. When the sun would rise he would become still and straighten and look eastwards, then shortly find himself waking on the forest floor. That was routine.
This moon was particularly awful. Coffee severely worsened things, made the readjusting of bones so much more painful, and he had been drinking it no less than ten hours ago in order to stay awake and supervise his younger sister’s recent dressmaking project. His parents were not pleased with him being left in charge, especially since the moon was so close, but there had been no one else.
Alex picked a piece of bone from between his teeth, imagining it came from his father’s femur or his mother’s skull. They were the more harmless Aidonsvalley folk—or, at least, the sort that believed themselves to be harmless when they were just weak—and he despised them for it. They were related to him but were not his family.
He suddenly felt around for his glasses’ case. He was not especially helpless without them, but they were the key to looking relatively normal. Only a select few people knew who he was. His moon-addled mind had concluded that his glasses were the key to stopping the residents of Aidonsvalley from looking too closely at him and figuring out exactly what was wrong.
Alex gave up and struggled to his feet, holding a tree for support. Within the forest stood an oak, with the beginnings of a treehouse balanced atop it.
He grinned. It’ll never be finished. Aidonsvalley chose what to keep and what to throw away, and buildings would never be included in the former. The most recent home that hadn’t been destroyed by the town had been built in the mid-twentieth century. It was just another strange part of the town that Alex was simply not particularly interested in solving. However he did like to reminisce about Anita Darlington’s attempt to build a windmill when Alex was younger. She was his aging neighbour, and spent an entire season constructing her windmill, which stood next to her vegetable garden.
It was struck by lightning less than an hour after it’s completion. Alex had been riding his bicycle next to her house when the incident occurred. He still remembered the flash in the sky moving downwards, his hammering heart, the smell of burning wood. He remembered the fright in his chest and Umi’s terrified face. He remembered how pleasant of a day it had been beforehand: warm, but not overbearingly so. Not a single rain-cloud had been sighted.
•••
“I’m telling you,” Raheem insisted, his hand holding onto Umi’s upper arm. “I’ve never seen someone stare at it for so long. You have a good eye—”
“So do you,” said Umi. He gave the statue a gentle knock and frowned. “It feels cheap. Too light. It’s almost like sandpaper. I’ve felt something like this before.”
A week had passed since the incident with the tourists, and Raheem had spent it scamming them by selling useless trinkets and completely fake stories about the origin of the town’s strangeness. He usually undertook little projects throughout the year, but it was summer and he deserved somewhat of a break. The ancient Coca Cola bottle he found buried in his garden and had subsequently sold to the blonde, observant woman would support his expensive lifestyle for at least a week at most.
If Raheem scraped the top layer of the soil in his garden, he could find enough things to set up his own museum. It was not a phenomena exclusive to him, and additionally, no one knew where all those things came from originally. Once, when uprooting weeds, one of the townsfolk, Amara, had discovered that her front garden was soaked in blood, not water. That explained why she couldn’t grow anything more demanding than cress.
Kel took Umi’s hand. He had sort of forced himself into this boring excuse of an adventure, but Raheem didn’t mind because he didn’t mind Kel. He was quite fond of anyone who sought out an entertaining experience.
“Never knew a tourist would work you up this much,” said Kel cheerfully, before pointing to a mark behind Edmund Aidon’s knee. “Hey, what’s this?”
“Looks like a square,” said Umi, leaning forward to see it clearer. “How did you spot this anyway?”
“Not sure,” answered Kel, despite obviously knowing that the mark had shifted itself, working up towards their line of sight so it could be seen. Those sort of things were ignored here. Everything had a life, and its own motives and ambitions. “In my opinion, it looks like a jackhammer, a bit. If you turn your head and squint.”
“No it does not,” said Raheem, annoyed. “It’s a cradle.”
Yes, it did appear to be a cradle the longer he looked at it. The thin bars grew clearer. Somehow he could tell it was wooden. But something about it all wasn’t right—it didn’t look like something carved into the statue. Rather, something that had been a part of it ever since it was constructed. Aidonsvalley didn’t have a symbol, official or unofficial. Something strange was certainly going on. Raheem wasn’t sure if he wanted to dig deeper.
“This is odd,” remarked Umi. “This is the only thing that survives Aidon—no other records as far as I know, and there’s something carved here. Should we look into it?”
“Maybe,” said Kel. “This isn’t very strange for this town, but it’ll be fun to investigate. But where? The library won’t be much help. They don’t keep records there.”
The only library in Aidonsvalley was this stuffy building from the early twentieth century that held absolutely nothing of value. Investigative material couldn’t be brought in for some reason or the other. It was all rejected in some form. The town archives had to be kept elsewhere because of it. As a demonstration of this fact, once, the mayor's niece Stephanie Murray attempted to trace the nearby lake’s history. Her paper had promptly burst into flames, and she decided to complete her project in a café maybe an hour or two away from the town. Really, the only thing the library had going for it was its complete Toni Morrison collection.
“They keep the town’s archive in the church on main street,” said Umi. “You know the one: St. Agnes. Apparently there’s a cellar underneath the altar, but I can’t be too sure.” He turned to Raheem, expressionless. Unsure. “Look, if you can find a way to get in, I’ll help you out. You know I’m not too certain.”
“I know,” replied Raheem brightly. “Doubting Thomas. Do you even think there’s something strange afoot?”
“Well there’s always something going on here,” said Umi, affronted. “If we get caught, it’s your fault. I’ll get Alex in on this as well, it’ll make things easier, I think.” Pause. “Do you want to get ice-cream with us?”
He waved a dismissive hand and turned back to Aidon. “Sure. Go ahead, I just need to check something.”
The two waved—Umi visibly confused but still sure in his own decision, Kel apprehensive and glancing around—and made their way to the nearby parlour.
Raheem placed his hand flat against the statue. Something shifted beneath his touch, he heard a faint noise like a beating drum, and he frowned.
Half an hour later on the other side of town, Alex stood at the lakeside. The lake beside Aidonsvalley (still technically within the town but somewhat shoved to the side) was the subject of many rumours. The tourists all cleared out before the sun had fully set, interested in what apparently went down beside the lake, but still in possession of some sense of self-preservation. Unfortunately, Alex did not have the aforementioned sense of self-preservation.
The only harm that could possibly befall him was if he lost his balance and fell down into the lake. There were pointed rocks below, carefully sharpened at dawn and at dusk, and if he pierced any part of his body, he most certainly would not survive that experience.
There was someone standing on the jetty above the lake. Alex recognised him as one of the Fallow brothers, three siblings from a family of mechanics. They handled the people who “washed up at the town’s shores,” fixed their cars, cleared their memories and sent them away. He was a high school student. Perfectly average. Nearly unnoticed. Graduating this fall.
And April was also below him, treading the water. Her hair floated on the surface. Alex averted his gaze, half out of respect and half to avoid her hypnotic technique. But he still saw her from the corner of his eyes, saw the way she unhinged her jaw and said the Fallow boy’s name: Matthew, in a voice she didn’t possess.
The boy moved closer to the ledge. He crouched and peered through the water. April’s power was clouding the air, turning it green. Matthew moved slowly, as if he were running through a lime cloud as if in a trance. Or a dream. Then he called for his mother and April responded in kind. He, foolishly, reached for the water, looking at her face and seeing his late mother instead of what she truly was. April grabbed his wrist and pulled.
He toppled over easily, and didn’t struggle until April sank her teeth into his neck. He flailed desperately and cried out from under the water. His movements slowed with every second until he finally fell still.
April emerged from the lake a moment later, her upper half collapsing on the ledge. She looked up at Alex and grinned. “It’s rude to watch a siren eat, you know.”
“Really?”
“No,” she said, “But it is an indicator that you’re the main entrée.” Her smile widened. “Kidding, I love you.”
Alex continued to watch the water. “He wasn’t claimed, you know. He can’t die until he gets things right. I’d expect to find him in the sewers. Or in the church.”
“Why’d you think I chose him?” April questioned.
They stared at each other for a moment before Alex reminded her of the time he saved her from these ‘low-quality’ whalers, as he dubbed it. She owed him, she even said that earlier. Then he told her that he needed her help breaking into her uncle’s church. Her hand shot out so fast, tightening around his earlobe, that he shouted and wobbled perilously on the edge.
“Idiot,” she chastised, “Why’d you wanna do that?”
April had this unfortunate habit of being constantly hesitant. It was not a con, for sure, but it certainly hindered any interesting activities Alex thought up. This was the wrong time to be careful, he reckoned, because if there was a mystery surrounding Aidonsvalley, then it was bound to be serious. She should know this.
“Something weird is happening,” said Alex, separating her fingers from around his ear and trying to keep his tone light. If he appeared to be desperate, she might decline just to fuck with him. “Raheem told me.”
“Raheem is a compulsive liar.”
“Not to me.”
He belatedly realised that it was the wrong thing to say.
“No,” April answered with a grin. “Not to you.”
Sensing a serious change of subject, Alex quickly arranged himself to a sitting position further up on the ledge. He balanced his chin against his palm and gave her a long look. She raised her brows in turn.
“Do you not have the stomach for this, April?”
“Of course I have the stomach for this,” she snapped. “I’m just careful, unlike you lot.” She paused. “I’ll help you plan your little heist, but don’t tell me what it’s for.” Despite herself, April grinned at him. “If that happens, I’ll get really interested. Things will all go down from there.”
•••
Raheem sat on the stone steps of St. Agnes, a book in hand. It was in French, a language he didn’t recall ever learning, but he could understand it perfectly. Strange. Even stranger was the fact that he could not walk past the altar for some reason, so Alex and Umi were the ones who had to retrieve the appropriate town records. Raheem was not pleased. He started this adventure, but had been forced to play whistleblower instead.
“How annoying,” he said as his phone began to ring.
“Found something about the town’s origins,” said Umi, breathing hard. From a distance, Raheem heard Alex laugh. “None about Edmund Aidon himself, though. I’m beginning to doubt his existence.”
“Tell me more. Is it interesting?”
A sharp inhale. “Oh, very.”
And it went like this:
The Preston’s were a family known for their hatred for supernatural creatures and how they exercised the aforementioned hatred. Once they were a few generations into the family practice of murder, several other families joined together with them to help achieve their shared goals. They called themselves The Cradle. Soon enough a town was founded for the five thousand or so members, and its name was unpronounceable.
About a century after the town’s creation, someone received word of a counterattack. In just a matter of days, vampires, werewolves and other supernaturals would band together and burn the town to the ground. Fearing something a little worse than death, the townsfolk hypocritically sought out a method to save them. They selected a random person in the town and made them live forever. The exact method, Umi stated, was not stated. Then the other townsfolk transformed themselves into the town—they knocked down the church and all the homes and created new walls out of their own flesh. The altar was made of bone. They drained the lake and replaced it with their own blood. The grass and the trees were fertilised with people, and the person they left behind was meant to bring them back once the danger had been averted, but they didn’t.
With a chill creeping down his spine, Raheem noted that the person might still be in Aidonsvalley. He glanced around in worry for a moment, as if the person might just be standing at his shoulder. Thankfully no such thing existed, but something else attracted his attention.
A porcelain statue near the church’s pillar, of a mother holding its child. It could be mistaken for Mary and the baby Jesus, but its features were hauntingly realistic and unlike the usual paintings of the Madonna and child. Beneath the porcelain was flesh, presumably. Raheem stared at the child holding his mother’s finger, sat in her lap, and felt a feeling both strong and indescribable.
“So presumably Aidon came across an already furnished yet empty town, then re-established it,” said Raheem, “But if that’s the case, wouldn’t there be anything about him? It’s like he just sprouted here.”
Things in this town tended to do that, he reminded himself. He was used to everything here. The tourist had described the statue in a strange manner. Slightly corrugated. That could mean skin, but it was hollow—
“There’s a chance that he was the person left behind,” said Umi slowly, “and no one ever thought to write it down since he’s a constant. You wouldn’t take note of the colour of the sky everyday? It’s either blue, red and sometimes black. We know that.”
They both hung up after Umi agreed to finish up shortly. Kel joined Raheem on the steps, very carefully not meeting his eyes. Perhaps the blue colour was too bright for this time at night, Raheem told himself.
The more Kel touched a stone step with his fingertips, the more it wore away until it revealed a portion of a face. Grey-skinned, open-mouthed, expression trapped somewhere between terror and exhilaration. The person’s eyes, fixed skywards, slowly lolled down to look directly at Kel. If its mouth was visible, Raheem would have received confirmation that it was smiling.
That was two incidents now, he stated privately as his heart jumped. The first was the cradle appearing just as Kel drew near, the second was the face.
When Umi and Alex returned and led the other two away, the stone replaced itself and the face was safely hidden away. As the four followed the path they had followed for well over a decade, Raheem distinctively felt like he was being watched. Perhaps it had always been this way, but now that he knew that Aidonsvalley was a real, living, breathing town, he felt it strongly.
There was one thing he knew for sure, though. When he would eventually sit in his living room, surrounded by relatives that were not family, and press his head against the wall, he would hear breathing. A deep inhale and exhale. It makes the whole world shake, but he’s the only one who feels it. He’s one of the only people that knows this town is made of living stone.
SSR Azuma [Mankai Glitter]: Backstage Translation
Azuma is really growing on me, Idk why... Anyway, slight update for my life, I passed my exams! So, I will start working from... tomorrow... Well, of course following that, I wouldn’t be able to do my translation as fast and as often as before, but I do still plan to translate as much as I can~ Hope everyone understands~
Summary:
Azuma and his wish to ‘Hello Celestial Sphere’
Tumblr media
Disclaimer:
A3! is owned by Liber’s Entertainment
To Aquarius: Azuma
Translator’s Note: They refer to a story where Winter Troupe went skiing/sledding together in the past. A friend told me that it refers to the magazine story, it can be found in yaycupcake under this link.
Tumblr media
Azuma:
Good evening.
Hisoka:
… Azuma, welcome.
Guy:
Welcome. Are you alone today?
Azuma:
Yeah, I just met my acquaintance earlier.
Guy:
I see.
What would you like to order?
Azuma:
Hmm, then I’ll get the recommended wine.
Guy:
Understood.
<Short Time Skip>
Guy:
Sorry for the wait.
Azuma:
Thank you.
By the way, the acquaintance that I met today said that they are into skiing lately.
When I heard that, I remember about the time we went skiing together with Winter Troupe.
In the end, it wasn’t really skiing though, it was more like sledding I guess?
Hisoka:
Yeah. We fell in the middle of it, it was quite troublesome…
Guy:
Is that a story before I join the troupe?
Azuma:
… Yeah, Guy wasn’t there yet at that time.
But when I remember about things related to Winter Troupe, I feel like Guy was always there somehow.
Hisoka:
Me too, I feel the same way.
Guy:
If that’s the case, I’m happy that I managed to blend in that much with everyone.
Azuma:
Yeah…
Guy:
Speaking of which, I have something that I need to hand over to Yukishiro.
Azuma:
Something you need to hand over?
Guy:
It’s that thing that has become the custom for every birthday.
Azuma:
… Oh, that.
<Shifts to Lesson Room>
Director:
… That’s all for today. Good work.
Tasuku:
Good work.
Hisoka:
Zzz.
Tsumugi:
Ah, by the way…
Azuma-san, have you decided on your wish for the ‘Hello Celestial Sphere’?
Azuma:
About that, I just received it from Guy the other day, I’m thinking about it now.
Well, it is said to be able to grant your wish for one day, I’m quite lost to what kind of wish I should make.
Tsumugi:
Then, why don’t we try going out somewhere?
I came up with my wish when I went out last time, if you change the environment, you might be able to think of something new.
Guy:
If that’s the case, how about we all go to the place that Yukishiro wants to go.
Tsumugi:
Sounds like a good idea.
Homare:
I agree as well.
Azuma:
Then, I have a place that I want to go with everyone.
Director, will you go with us as well?
Director:
Is it alright?
Azuma:
Of course.
Director:
Then, I’ll be in your care.
But where do you want to go, Azuma-san?
Azuma:
Fufu, about that--.
<End of Part 1>
Tumblr media
Azuma:
I’m glad the weather’s clear today.
Director:
It’s a perfect day for skiing.
Hisoka:
The snow looks sparkly.
Homare:
Looking at this beautiful snowy landscape filled me with nothing but motivation and inspiration!
Tumblr media
Tasuku:
But, I was quite surprised to hear that Azuma-san wants to go skiing. You weren’t very enthusiastic the last time we were here.
Tsumugi:
Well, that’s true…
Tumblr media
Azuma:
The other day, I was talking to Guy and Hisoka about the time when Winter Troupe went skiing.
But, that was a story before Guy joined the troupe, so I thought it would be a good idea to create a new memory with the 6 of us and Director as well.
Guy:
I see… Thank you, Yukishiro.
Tumblr media
Homare:
We’re used to Guy being here now, it certainly doesn’t feel like he wasn’t actually there at that time.
Azuma:
Fufu, I thought the same too.
Tasuku:
Anyway, since we’re here, are you going to try skiing too, Azuma-san?
Azuma:
I just want to ride the lift.
Tasuku:
To come this far just for the lift, you’re the same as usual…
Director:
Well, well, this also serves as a birthday celebration for Azuma-san, isn’t it fine to listen to what he wants.
Hisoka:
You can ski as much as you want later.
Tasuku:
… Fine.
Azuma:
Fufu, thank you everyone.
<Short Time Skip>
Azuma:
It feels nice to be surrounded by the snowy landscape.
Director:
Is it alright to not ride with everyone else?
Azuma:
In times like this, I think I would like to ride with Director first.
Director:
Eh? Umm, thank you…?
[
[
Option 1: I’m getting embarrassed somehow…
Director:
I’m happy that you say that you want to ride with me, but I’m getting embarrassed somehow…
Azuma:
It’s only the two of us on the lift and we’re sitting quite close together.
There’s always a saying about people who fell in love in ski resort, it might be because of the lift effect as well.
Director:
Re, really…
*lift shook abruptly*
Woah…!
Azuma:
Are you alright?
Director:
I was just a bit surprised.
Azuma:
You can hold on to me if you’re scared.
The story about love that’s born in ski resorts, it might be because of suspension bridge effect as well.
Director:
… Azuma-san, are you teasing me?
Azuma:
Fufu, sorry. Director, your reaction’s too cute.
]
]
[
[
Option 2: The lift is fun!
Director:
The lift sure is fun!
Azuma:
Director, are you alright with high places?
Director:
This much is alright. The view’s great as well, it feels very nice here.
Azuma:
You’re right. I’m glad we went here.
I don’t think we’ll normally get the opportunity to see this much snow.
Director:
Let’s go skiing as well later!
Azuma:
I’m satisfied with just riding the lift.
]
]
Azuma:
Even so, the snow reflection is quite strong…
Director:
You’re right, it’s so dazzling…
But, I’m sure Azuma-san has taken the necessary measure right.
Azuma:
I’ve done what I can. I’ve also borrowed a recommended sunscreen from Azami.
Director:
I feel that it’s definitely an effective one if it’s recommended by Azami-kun.
Azuma:
Yeah, I think so too.
<Shifts to Ski Resort’s Lounge>
Homare:
I was just sliding happily, but by the time I realized, I was roped into Tasuku’s spartan coaching, it was rough…
Tumblr media
Guy:
But, I feel like I have improved due to his coaching.
Hisoka:
I’m tired after all the skiing…
Tasuku:
Let’s try challenging the advance course next.
Homare:
I have to decline!
There’s no way I will have enough energy to do that.
Tsumugi:
I have to stop as well.
I will be in trouble if I can’t come down halfway…
Hisoka:
Me too, it’s enough.
Tasuku:
Geez, where’s your motivation gone to.
How about you, Guy-san?
Guy:
Let’s see. Since we’re already here, let’s challenge it.
Tasuku:
As expected of Guy-san.
Then, let’s go there later.
Director:
(Everyone seems to enjoy themselves here.)
Hisoka:
Azuma, have you decided on your wish?
Azuma:
Thanks to this trip. I thought of something when I was riding on the lift with Director just now.
Director:
Eh?
Guy:
If you have decided, you can go ahead and use this.
Azuma:
This, it’s the ‘Hello Celestial Sphere’…
You actually brought it all the way here?
Tumblr media
Guy:
Yeah, I have a feeling that it will be necessary.
Tsumugi:
You even bring the ‘Hello Celestial Sphere’ to a ski resort, you’re so prepared.
Homare:
As expected of Guy-san, it’s flawless!
Azuma:
Thank you, Guy.
I guess I will use it since it’s already here then.
Director:
(I wonder what Azuma-san’s wish will be…?)
Azuma:
Hello, the stars of Aquarius…
I want to see a world without UV rays.
Tasuku:
A world without UV…?
Director:
Ah right, even I got worried about the sunburn when I was on the lift…
Guy:
You’re fine with that wish?
Hisoka:
I thought you would wish for something grander.
Azuma:
Something more grand huh…
But for me, this is an important matter.
Homare:
But speaking like Azuma-san, it really sounds like a wish made by Azuma-san.
Tsumugi:
But, what kind of world is a world without UV rays…?
Azuma:
About that, I’m just going to look forward to it when my wish is granted.
<End of Part 2>
Tumblr media
Azuma:
Hmm…
(It’s dark outside… It’s still nighttime huh.
I’m just going to sleep until morning.
… Eh? Guy’s not here…?
Also, I have a strange feeling.
I woke up in the middle of the night, but I feel refreshed somehow.)
<Shifts to Courtyard>
Tsumugi:
Good morning, Azuma-san.
You’re pretty early today.
Tumblr media
Azuma:
Early… It’s still nighttime though?
Tsumugi:
Eh…? It’s morning.
It’s rare for Azuma-san to still be half asleep.
Azuma:
Morning…?
(Even though it’s this dark…)
Tsumugi:
I woke up early because I have an errand today, but as I thought, waking up early is a pain…
Taichi:
This is bad! I’m going to be late!
Tsumugi:
Taichi-kun, have a safe trip.
Taichi:
I’m going off!
Azuma:
He’s going to school even when it’s dark.
Do they have a special event going on?
Tsumugi:
Eh? Isn’t it just the usual thing.
Azuma:
Going to school in the middle of the night is a usual thing…?
Tsumugi:
That’s why, it’s not in the middle of the night, it’s already morning.
Azuma-san, what happened to you today?
Azuma:
Ah… Nothing.
(What is happening here.
… Perhaps, it’s the ‘Hello Celestial Sphere’s fault?
I wished for a world without UV rays, maybe it becomes a constant nighttime because of that.
Is it going to stay like this…
Even though I hated morning, I want to see morning arrives right now.
I never think that it’s going to be like this…)
Tsumugi:
Azuma-san, are you tired?
If that’s the case, it might be better for you to rest a bit more…
Azuma:
Ah… Yeah, I’m alright.
(The effect of the ‘Hello Celestial Sphere’ is supposed to last for one day only. When today’s over, morning should come as per usual.)
<Shifts to Azuma’s Room>
Azuma:
Hmm…
(It’s bright outside…
… I’m glad. It’s the usual morning.)
Guy:
Yukishiro, you’re up early today.
Azuma:
I’m just awake somehow. Good morning, Guy.
Guy:
Yeah, good morning.
Azuma:
It’s not that bad to wake up early once in a while.
Guy:
? Yeah…?
<Shifts to Courtyard>
Azuma:
Good morning, Tasuku.
Tumblr media
Tasuku:
Good morning.
Azuma-san, you’re up early today.
Azuma:
… I guess, there’s a reason for people to bask in the sunlight.
Tasuku:
Huh?
Azuma:
It’s just a story about knowing it’s importance only when you have lost it.
Tasuku:
What…?
Azuma:
Fufu, I feel like going to the skiing place again somehow.
Let’s go there again one day with everyone.
Tasuku:
Why would the very person who was bothered with the UV rays say that.
… Geez, I really can’t understand you.
Drabble 122
Vampire Bats 1 (AU)
At 14, Varian was a very logical person. He didn't believe in ghosts, or werewolves, or witches, or magic hair (despite all the rumors surrounding the newly-returned Princess of Corona.) He believed in science and the things he could study and discern their physical and alchemical components. Which was why he had no qualms abut going into the orchard late one foggy evening to retrieve firewood while his ailing father slept.
It was chilly as Varian walked, looking for dead wood they could burn so they wouldn't have to resort to chopping down any tree. A less scientifically minded teenager might have been scared, but Varian knew that the cool temperature was the reason for his goosebumps- not fright. And his breath certainly didn't catch in his throat when he heard a rustling sound behind him.
“D-dad? I thought you were still in bed. I-I'm big enough to do this chore on my own. You need to rest and recover.” Varian stammered. But it wasn't Quirin behind him. There was nobody there but Varian and the shadows surrounding him. Okay, maybe it was a little creepy, but Varian could handle this. He reached into a pocket and pulled out a small vial, glowing with a green liquid Varian had synthesized. The shadows retreated somewhat and Varian caught a glimpse of a bat swooping in his direction. A bat? He almost laughed out loud at his foolishness, but then the bat swerved and dived straight towards his head. Varian ducked, but too slowly, and the bat nipped at his neck.
“Ow!” Varian yelped. He rubbed his hand against his neck, wincing in pain. He hoped it was a small wound, and not one that would bleed a lot, because Varian tended to faint at the sight of blood. At least, if he was bleeding now, Varian hadn't seen it. Thank heavens for small miracles.
Varian bent down, grabbing the nearest pieces of firewood. Once he had a good-sized bundle, he turned around and headed home, no longer thinking of the bat bite and the fear he'd briefly felt.
“I'm back, Dad.” Varian announced. He could hear snores from his father's room, and he relaxed. Quirin would sleep off his illness and the household could go back to it's normal state. Varian knew he should sleep too, but for some reason his head was buzzing, and he couldn't get comfortable in bed, try as he might. Perhaps he was getting sick, too...
Morning came, far too early for Varian's liking. He'd finally managed some sleep, by lying upside down and letting his head dangle over the edge of the bed. It was weird, but it had worked, so Varian wasn't complaining.
“Morning, sleepyhead.” Quirin greeted him, passing a plate of eggs and toast to Varian. Quirin seemed to have fully recovered and had quite the appetite. But Varian's stomach turned at the sight of food, which was strange, as he usually loved his Dad's cooking.
“I'm not hungry.” Varian mumbled.
“Oh? You're not catching my cold, are you?” Quirin worried. He placed a palm on Varian's forehead. “You don't feel warm, quite the opposite. But you are looking pale. I think you might want to lie down.”
Back in bed where he had hardly slept? That didn't appeal to Varian at all. “I'm fine. I got the firewood last night, and I guess I was up later than I realized.” Varian made an excuse.
“Thank you, son. We're probably going to need it, it looks like we'll be in for an early winter this year. There's already frost on the grass and on the windows.” Quirin pointed out. Varian looked outside but all he really noticed was how bright the sun was shining, and how it gave him a headache.
“...You sure you're fine?” Quirin pressed. Varian nodded. “Then we'd better get started on picking those apples. A little frost won't hurt them, but we need to get the harvest in soon.” Quirin said.
Varian pushed aside his uneaten breakfast and went to get the wheelbarrow for carrying the apples. Quirin tidied up the plates and hummed out of tune. Soon father and son were ready to go the orchard, both bundled up in jackets and scarves.
But Varian soon came to regret wearing a jacket, because despite the signs of frost, Varian felt as if he were getting sunburned with every step and the extra layers only added to his discomfort. Quirin didn't seem to notice, he was too involved in his work, which was good because if he had looked closely at Varian, he would have surely sent his boy back inside.
Varian climbed up and down the ladder numerous times, picking the red fruit. He'd never noticed before, but the color red was very appealing. Unconsciously he ran his tongue over his teeth, and noticed the canines seemed sharper than usual, almost nicking his tongue. And then there would have been blood, and that would have been... not as awful as he used to think. Varian wondered what had brought about that change, but if it meant he'd finally gotten over one of his fears, he wasn't going to question it. So he kept on picking apples with Dad, stopping every so often to wipe the sweat off his face. Why did the sun have to be so darned hot, anyway?!
“Ready for a break, Varian?” Quirin asked.
“Okay, Dad.” Varian agreed. Anything to beat this awful heat!
“We got a nice harvest today. Good job, Varian.” Quirin praised. Varian didn’t respond, just stared at the apples in the wheelbarrow. He wasn't hungry for eggs, but he might take a bite out of those juicy, red apples. Varian grabbed one and popped it in his mouth. It looked good, but unfortunately it had very little taste. Perhaps it wasn't as ripe as it seemed.
“Help me put these apples in the barn. We can feed the animals while we're at it.” Quirin said. Varian followed, not feeling his usual enthusiasm for the task. At least not until he saw the pigs and cows. Varian licked his lips as a particularly fat pig wandered over. Varian liked the taste of ham and bacon, but he'd never felt the urge to eat any of the farm animals before their time. Today though, he found himself not caring if the meat was raw. He moved his tongue from side to side again, this time cutting his tongue. He tasted the coppery sensation of blood and found he liked it, which was by far the weirdest thing about a very weird day.
“Varian? What's the matter?” Quirin asked.
“I-I don't know.” Varian admitted. “...maybe I am sick after all?”
Quirin nodded. “You definitely look it. Go lie down, I'll finish up in the barn.” Quirin said.
Slowly, Varian walked back to the house. Once inside, he tore off the jacket and scarf, briefly touching the puncture wound on his neck. It was inflamed, probably an infection on top of a cold. No wonder he felt awful.
So Varian headed to his room, satisfied that he had finally put together what was making him feel so bad. He almost flopped straight onto the bed, but he decided instead to look in the mirror first, see if he really looked as bad as he felt.
Varian stared at the mirror, and let out a cry. He no longer had a reflection! But if he could have seen his face he would have known that the blue stripe in his hair was now a dark red.
The End
I don't know if I'll ever continue this (I'll just leave it as a one shot for now) but it was kinda fun exploring the Vamparian AU.
