right, so, Johnny boi dies and Ghost starts to, eh, lose it? Reg isn't in the picture here, so, yeah. Ziese, as a person that only ended up here by accident and has a pretty firm grasp on recognizing 'bad mental state', very much wants Ghost off the team, because homeboy is going from 'weird murderous fucker' to 'actual liability' at this point. Ghost starts talking to Johnny and Ziese goes 'NOPE! He needs an exorcism!' But Ghost is still sorta functioning during missions? And people would rather keep him where they can see him than somewhere else.

Cue to Ziese being send to Ghosts location, my man is technically here for extraction and transportation after all, only to find Ghost completely gone and sitting in the muddle of a bloody mess, eyes empty and unseeing, being very rude to some corpses he is the maker of. Ziese tries to snap him out of it, it comes to a fight during which Ghost is very much out of it and barely functioning, and Ziese ends up accidentally shooting him through the head.

Ghost becomes Ziese's first, real kill and it messes with him bad. Not only did he kill his teammate, he also killed 'The Ghost'. Word gets around, nobody knows what really happened, but the callsign Ziese suddenly holds a weight he never wanted. He gets stuck in a position he doesn't know how to escape and decides to sucumb to his fate, inadvertedly starts turning into a husk of his former self and goes full 'if ya can't beat them, join them'. His reputation grows, he becomes a creature his friends and family could never recognize again, not that they've seen him since his first kill because he wanted to keep them safe, and all in all its pretty fucked up.

In the end, he becomes everything that he feared Ghost to be during his last few weeks, hallucinates Ghost a lot and is a terrifying and lost creature that should just be put down.

had myself an ugly time rereading some good ol' 80s comics, which feature imho some of the most devastating pages in dc comics history. tl;dr, its after '85 crisis, meaning kara has died (dick giorlando you live up to your name) and has also been pretty much wiped from existence in very comics fashion. she doesn't appear in continuity from '85 crisis until 2001, i dont think--with one exception. christmas with the super-heros #2 (1989). my babygirl.

its not super complicated--each hero gets their own little story on how they spend their holiday, helping others (superman), feeling sad about robin (batman), let some rich guy pretend to be santa (hal and barry), and deadman possess a repo man to make him give money to the people he's hurt. he also sends some wine and presents to his old friends.

and he's lonely. no one can see him. what's the point? is misery the reward for his acts of good?
