On Elriel, themes, and character arcs

This blog is for my Elriel ramblings, and I feel like rambling about Elriel tonight.

I quite like to explore theme and buildup and such things, and I really like how SJM has set up Elain's story and arc. So I wanted to write something about both Azriel and Elain's character arcs.

I'm just going to pour out some thoughts here on a whim before I'm going to bed. Everything I say here will be an exploration of canon but it is not a judgement on shipping outside of canon. Fandom is where fiction gains a life of its own. Fandom is where we can ship based on vibes, whereas fiction is where ships are built on themes. And this specific post is about canon and themes.

Something I think often happens when people discuss their views on where ACOTAR is heading is that discussions revolve around individual plot points, quotes or individual character traits, but do not relate them to theme. That becomes quite fruitless if we are interested in getting to the bottom of where canon might be heading (which can be fun!). It's a good example of not seeing the forest for the trees.

So, I want to take a step back and look at the bigger picture. I want to look at the forest (theme) instead of inspecting single trees (individual plot points, individual character traits etc, seen in a vacuum). Then it becomes so clear to me where this story is going, and I’m just left with peace and quiet, and appreciation for SJM’s skills in utilizing theme to effectively convey messages - and the beautiful character arc she has created for Elain! (And I happen to really like where she is going with Elain and Azriel.)

What is a theme?

I think of themes as the underlying messages that a work of fiction is exploring, which often ties to moral and ethical dilemmas and the human condition (the Fae condition?). It can be: good vs. evil, fate vs. choice, or forgiveness/redemption for example. They are the most fundamental drivers of a story as they shape the entire story and all its components.

How? Let’s look at three basic components : plot, characters, symbolism.

Plot: The theme shapes the plot by guiding the direction of the story.

Character development: The theme shapes character development, by making characters confront and in various ways relate to the theme. 

Themes equip character with different traits, virtues, and vices (which can be nuanced) that guide their behaviour in relation to the theme. Here we also have character arcs - how characters develop in their confrontation with the theme. There will be a starting point for the character, there will be some form of turning point that sets them on a trajectory to develop/change, they will face moral and ethical dilemmas that connect to the theme and eventually there will be a resolution where the outcome shows how the character has progressed from where they started.

Symbolism: the theme determines how symbolism is used, because symbolism is often there to enhance or reinforce the theme.

By tying all these components to an overarching narrative, message, themes give the story a common thread. Cohesion if you will. A story without themes will be all over the place.

I’ll focus here mostly on the realm of characters and character development. We have followed Elain and Azriel over four or five books. We have seen enough of their character arcs already to have a very solid understanding of the direction SJM is heading with these characters and to understand what character development for them would be, and what would be regression.

What I think is important to point out, is that SJM has stated that the ACOTAR books are about female main characters and their male love interests. The male love interests take a little bit of a back seat in ACOTAR (compared to for example TOG). This is in itself also a theme - female empowerment - that is present throughout all the books. So when looking at love interest, I think it is how the male love interest ties into his female love interest's arc that is most important (this is certainly true for Nessian and Feysand). The female main character in ACOTAR will never take a backseat to her male love interest. (And I'll get to why I think Azriel is pretty much a manifestation of Elain's progression as a character because they complement each other's arcs so well).

So, enter Elain.

Elain’s arc

How can we explore an arc? Identify themes? We can start by looking at a character in their starting point. What are their weaknesses? What obstacles are there for their happiness and fulfilment? Whatever that is, is what that character will have to face in order to progress. And in that, we can identify themes.

Elain’s arc has been constructed around the theme of reclaiming agency. Underpinning Elain’s journey is also her discovery of identity. To have agency, to make choices, she needs to know who she is and what she wants outside of expectations that shaped her in childhood.

Let’s look at her arc so far to understand why I consider these relevant themes for Elain.

Starting point

Elain starts out as someone heavily influenced by her mother's expectations, moulded to be an asset for marriage. Her mother quite literally says she (11 year old Ellain) has no wants or ambitions, she's just a pretty face and her and Nesta's (who was 12) "maneuverings" will secure an advantage marriage for Elain. Elain was groomed into having no say. Her sense of purpose seemed tied to her ability to live to up to the expectations put upon her. We see this in her holding onto hope that her relationship with Graysen would work out, even when all feasibility was gone, because it had been her life’s purpose to marry - it is how she was to bring prosperity to her family.

Turning point (What sets her on a trajectory to change)

When Elain is Made into High Fae and Graysen rejects her, she faces an identity crisis. Her carefully constructed future crumbles, and she is removed from the childhood environment where she was groomed. All of this pushes her to eventually have to confront her own wants and desires rather than the obligations forced upon her through childhood. Of course gaining seer powers is also extremely relevant here, but I'm focusing on the romance in this post.

Conflict

As she is Made, she is also given a mate, and within Fae society it is expected of you to be with your mate. It is a mirror to the expectations put upon her by her mother. But, removed from her childhood circumstances, we see her actively having to confront the expectations put upon her. She rejects the notion of a mate, refusing fate to dictate her life. And over time, we see her starting to learn to navigate High Fae society. She finds friends, hobbies, and purpose. She is learning to identify what she wants. She is beginning to develop an identity of her own.

We also see this in how she in ACOFAS and ACOSF acts “out of character” if compared to Elain of ACOTAR and ACOMAF. We see that in her sense of humour, in her standing up to Nesta, and wanting to get in on the action of the IC. That tells us that who she was in her starting point was a suppression of her true self and she is now in the process of confronting the expectations that dictated her life and finding her identity.

She was groomed by her mother to fit in a mould, but she is not who she was forced to be. Rhys has noticed, Feyre has noticed, Nesta has noticed, Amren has noticed. We all have noticed.  She also develops feelings for Azriel, and in his bonus chapter we find out she is ready to act on them. She is on a trajectory towards character development, and clear conflicts have been laid out that relate to her reclaiming agency - fate vs. choice.

Resolution

We have of course not reached the resolution yet, we have only barely touched on the conflicts and dilemmas she has to confront, because we don’t have her book yet – we only have its setup. But, given the arc that has been set in motion, what is the next, thematically cohesive, step? It is for Elain to move from being a passive participant in her own life, doing what is expected of her, to an active one. To becoming a subject, a being that acts upon other things, rather than an object that is acted upon and pushed around. To make her own decisions based on her values and desires.

Despite not having her book, we have already been introduced to some of her values and desires in regards to romance. That love would trump a mating bond. That a mate is not entitled to her time and affection because he is her mate. She desires choice in love. For her arc to be complete – she would have to go with her choice in love, Azriel. She would have to reject the external expectations put upon her and let her choice trump those expectations.

What would be regression for Elain?

The antithesis to exerting agency is to obey and fall in line. What could such regression look like for Elain?

Elain gives in to external pressures by accepting Lucien as her mate (despite wanting Azriel) for the sake of political alliances and social expectations. By doing so she loses her independence by once again conforming and prioritizing her duty over her desires.

Elain suppresses her emotional connection with Azriel and her own values – that love would trump a mating bond – and forces herself into a relationship that is “correct” by societal standards, but personally unfulfilling – once again acting out of duty instead of choice.

By doing the above, she would end her arc exactly where she started it, or worse. She would end as a trapped and powerless individual.

This would be an unhinged story to tell.

Lucien

Could SJM write Elain to change her mind and choose Lucien? As a hypothetical, yes. But it removes all the narrative impact of Elain’s choice. Because she doesn’t need any progression to make that choice - there is no growth! Elain’s choice would be the one that is socially expected, the one that is determined by fate, outside of her influence. So it is not an arc of character development, it is one of regression or stagnation. That is not how a story is told. It is not the story SJM has written.

The idea of Elucien often relies on SJM’s tendency to write fated mates. It is true that she often does (but not always). But that is irrelevant if it breaks thematic cohesion to follow that same pattern in this story. This story doesn’t follow the thematic buildup of other stories. It’s its own story.

It seems to sometimes be forgotten, but Lucien does not  want this mating bond either. A mate was thrown at him, like it was at Elain before they even knew each other. Lucien, having grown up within Fae customs, is reluctantly trying to entertain the idea. But Lucien had known real love, and the one he loved was nothing like Elain (sometimes people aren’t into each other). I think Lucien and Elain have a thematic buildup that is leading them both to find purpose away from each other – which I think sets them up to tell the story of a rejected mating bond - of reclaimed agency. But that’s maybe for another post. Lucien's arc is one I look forward to.

Azriel’s arc

Azriel’s arc revolves a lot around themes of self-sacrifice vs. self-worth.

What have we seen of his arc already, and what is the thematically cohesive continuation of it?

Starting point

Azriel starts out as guarded, self-sacrificial, perfectionistic, full of self-loathing, and as prioritizing duty and his Court over his own fulfilment. He never expresses wants or needs that are rooted in his emotional well-being. This entails that he believes his value lies in how useful he can be for others. He beats himself up if he doesn't perform his duties perfectly. But we have seen that the work he does with his hands (as interrogator and torturer) and the childhood trauma that is manifested on his hands have made him emotionally guarded, feeling self-loathing, touch-aversion and unworthy of romantic love.

Turning point

When Azriel meets Elain he starts behaving differently. He is drawn to touching her like we don’t see him with anyone else, and she never recoils from his touch – she encourages it. Her small acts of kindness (like gifting him the headache powder) has him feeling joy in ways we haven’t seen before. He relaxes with Elain in the garden and during Solstice.

He chooses his desire to save Elain above the security of his Court by, without hesitation, risking his own life to save her right before they are about to go to war, knowing how important he is for his Court as Spymaster, rare shadowsinger, interrogator, and warrior. This is a self-sacrificial act, but not one born out of duty. The difference from his previous self-sacrificial tendencies is that he is choosing to do it despite dire consequences of his choice for his Court if he dies in the process just before a war is about to begin. Before this, we’ve seen him prioritize politics and his Court over his own wants and needs (like choosing the alliance with Keir over Mor’s contentment, despite how we know he cares for Mor). His rescue of Elain is narratively important, and SJM gave it pages upon pages, and keeps pointing this rescue scene out in the books.

He also lends TT to Elain, which he has never done to anyone, telling her he wants her to use it.

Something is shifting his internal narrative about himself that has him behaving differently, and in opposition to his self-loathing and workaholic tendencies, when Elain came into the picture. (Don't forget the secret glances and brushing fingers - very much not ACOMAF Azriel behaviour!).

Before this, he seems to have been stagnant for 500+ years. Remove Elain, and he would still be stagnant.

Conflict

Azriel develops romantic feelings for Elain and is torn between his deep feelings for her and his belief that he should stay away because she has a mate. After ACOFAS we see how his choice to stay away is ruining him throughout ACOSF. He can’t sleep, he is isolating himself because he can’t attend family dinners, he is throwing himself at work and training again. All of this creates tension between his sense of duty (staying away from Elain out of respect for the bond and the political ramifications of getting romantically involved with her) and his personal wants, needs and fulfilment.

The discovery that Elain wants him too, Rhys ordering him to stay away, Azriel questioning the Cauldron and then discovering that the Cauldron is corrupted are clear conflicts and dilemmas he will have to tackle to set him on the trajectory to discover how he can learn to find himself worthy of romantic love and reach self-acceptance.

Resolution

Of course we don’t have the resolution to his arc yet. It will happen in the book. But based on what has been laid out – what would a thematically cohesive resolution be? His self-loathing is tied to his inability to see himself as worthy of romantic love, not friendship (he does have friends). So his arc would conclude with him accepting that he is worthy of romantic love - not because he is useful but because someone simply loves him as he is - and choosing to prioritize his own emotional needs and wellbeing over his duties and orders. All of these things are thematically tied to Elain – she has been depicted as the one that accepts and invites his touch, that Azriel chooses to relax with, the one he wants and that wants him too.  

What could be regression for Azriel?

The antithesis to Azriel acknowledging his self-worth would be to retreat back to his work and duty. How could this play out?

Azriel rejects the possibility of being with Elain, thinking he is too tainted by his work and his past to deserve it. He remains trapped in his viscous circle of self-sacrifice, putting duty, work, training and the well-being of others ahead of himself.

He retreats further into training, duty and work. This would deepen his feelings of self-loathing. His touch-aversion would probably get worse, and he might become more closed off from everyone in the IC because of his avoidance of Elain and his suppression of his feelings for her (since she is part of the IC).

He would end up exactly where he started, or even worse.

This would be an unhinged story.

Just to touch on G/wynriel very briefly: Azriel character development needs less duty and training, and training and duty is all that ties Gwyn and Azriel together. Because he is just her trainer. So, G/wynriel is not where we're heading because it breaks any and all thematic cohesion. It cuts the current thematic trajectory off like Gwyn cut  that ribbon and starts from scratch with nothing - leaving both Azriel and Elain stagnant or regressing, which is not going to happen after all this buildup (Azriel has also nothing at all to do with Gwyn's arc).

All in all,

As the character arcs of Elain and Azriel has been thematically laid out, it is Elain and Azriel this story is heading towards when it comes to their love interests. This is only reinforced if you further include plot and symbolism.

For Azriel to fulfil the trajectory of his character arc, as SJM has written it, he needs to prioritize his wants and wellbeing – his romantic feelings for Elain. He needs to de-prioritize duty, defy Rhys orders and act on his and Elain’s mutual feelings. To not do so is character regression.

Elain has to choose her wants, needs and values – manifested in her choosing Azriel – and defy societal expectations for her character arc to reach its resolution. To not do so, and once again obey societal expectations, is character regression.

Azriel and Elain are the manifestation of each others progression and the antithesis to each other's regression. They perfectly complement each other's arcs.

To not follow this thematic trajectory would be as if Frodo, when he had finally reached Mount Doom, about to complete his arc of the reluctant hero whose humble resilience saves the world, would have decided that he is actually not very heroic, handed the ring to the nearest Ringwraith and headed back to the Shire. It would be a bad and absolutely unhinged story.

This is why Elain and Azriel are ending up together. Because it really is the only thing that makes thematic sense for Elain’s story.

And then, when I have taken a step back to see the forest and not get stuck on the trees, I can go back an admire all the individual trees of their story in peace. But now I'm going to sleep.

Hey, good morning, good afternoon, or good evening! What do you think are the biggest myths in the world of Boku no Hero? Things that people believe, but are actually incorrect? (In this case, not within the universe, but what the fans believe.)

This is hard to talk about since there aren't a lot of myths. At least, none that I can think of. Information is so readily available it's hard for myths to even form as opposed to older series like Naruto, Bleach, or One Piece. Then again, it could be that I run a blog that explains a lot of those away. So for this, this is going to cover more misinterpretations and misunderstandings about the series, like with the villains.

-The Quirk Singularity: Fans tend to massively overestimate the importance and meaning behind the Quirk Singularity, especially with how little it is actually mentioned. It's not some major plot device that never got resolved, but more there to reinforce the ideas and themes of the series.

-Quirkless People: This ties into both the idea that Quirkless people are oppressed and that they could totally be heroes. The actual "oppression" is entirely confined to Izuku and Bakugou's dynamic and the story makes it very clear that being a hero without a Quirk and purely physical abilities is a death sentence.

-The Hero Commission: The Hero Commission is not pure evil. Morally dubious would be the best way to describe them, using less then heroic methods to try to keep everything falling from apart. It doesn't make them right, but it makes a little more complicated then a lot of fans tend to make them out to be.

-The Ending: I questioned whether or not I should bring this up in the first place, but my goodness, there is a lot of misinformation being spread around or people straight up lying with what is going on with the ending and what it is going for. I go into more detail with my big review of it. So feel free to look at the for those clarificaitons.

-Momo: There's just a lot of about Momo as a whole that people misunderstand. Everything from reducing her to merely being fanservice, ignoring the arc she goes on through out the series, and a lot of misinterpretations about how her Quirk works and why she uses it the way she does. That alone makes it worth noting here.

-Hawks and Twice: There's a lot that I think tends to get overlooked about these two, but Hawks killing Twice is the most obvious one. While it was morally wrong, it wasn't practically wrong. Twice was one of the biggest threats among the villains and was going to hurt countless people with his power. If it was him or them, I'd pick them.

-Izuku/Uraraka/Bakugou: I'm tying these three together since people tend to confluate them is staggering. Bakugous is not a misunderstood bad boy, but he isn't the devil either. Uraraka does love Izuku, but there is a lot more to her character then that. And the amount of misunderstandings about Izuku is staggering.

-The Todorokis: It's really the whole situation, but mostly about Enji. The amount of bad faith and misreadings that surrounding his character is so frustrating to see. He isn't a good person, but so much of people's thoughts on seem to come less from the story and more from the worst interpretations and exaggerations possible.

Why do you think so many people ignore that Azula respected the Dai Li even though they were from the Earth Kingdom? Doesn't that prove she had the potential to no longer be racist?

Azula has the potential to not the be racist regardless of how she treated any non-Fire Nation character because the show explicitly says "Everyone is capable of great good and great evil" and it even ends with Zuko telling OZAI that he believes Aang is right and maybe he will change someday. Not everyone will see the error of their ways, but everyone has the potential to do so, Azula very much included.

As for the Dai Li, she "respects" them the same way I "respect" the broom I use to sweep the house. It's a tool that did it's job without issue and that doesn't need to be thought of for a second longer after it.

The highest compliment she can give them is "They're Earth Kingdom men, but their killer instinct is so firebending." Their nationally is treated, very explicitly, as the negative thing about them, while the stuff that reminds her of her own nation is the good. "You're one of the good ones" is still saying there's something wrong about what/who you are.

Azula literally says she (and her family) have the divine right to rule. She fully believes they have every right to invade these people's lands, force half of them to submit and kill the other half. Her using the Dai Li to do some of her biding in the Earth Kingdom because they're power system that already existed there is not the same as being able to respect them as people, it's simply her being practical.

How do you think european nations managed to colonize countries that had populations much, much larger than their own, at the same time and for entire centuries? They'd include some of these people in the plan, not as victims but as perpetrators. Using some of the local forces to keep the mass under the control (and thus not risking too much of your own forces if something goes wrong) is colonialism 101.

Azula already has trouble seeing Fire Nation people that are under her on the nation's hierarchy as equals, even when she genuinely LOVES them (see Mai and Ty Lee). She was never going to start magically seeing Earth Kingdom citizens as people just because she intimidated and manipulated the Dai Li into following her. She calls them "souvenirs" when she brings them to the Fire Nation and they were literally among the first groups that she threw under the bus when she had her breakdown.

She does not care. She does not respect them. They're useful tools, but that's it.

In my opinion, Azula is simmilar to Iroh when it comes to potential for redemption: it could only happen after she experienced some major tragedy that would rock her wrong and potentially kill the faith she had on her father's way of doing things. She was indoctrinated from birth to believe that foreigners are not as human as she is, so she doesn't have to care about their suffering, even if she/her family/her country is the one causing it. She'll see THEIR tragedies as "the way things are."

That's why Ehasz was pushing for her to be redeemed after she recovered from her breakdown with Zuko's help. She needs the old system to fail her and, more importantly, for a new, kinder system to save her. That's the only way she'll finally realize the old ways were absolutely TERRIBLE and couldn't give anyone anything but misery.

TY FOR ASKING BTW I DON'T REMEMBER WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME I HAD A CHANCE OF YAPPING ABT IT UNAPOLOGETICALLY. My lore for them is actually a mix of nearly everything, from sedition tapes to personal headcanons and Alagadda to fanfics I read YEARS ago as a new and innocent fan. Then I closed it all in bottle, gave it a good shake, and just let it sit in the back of my mind like wine.

So first of all, Alagadda of course works completely different from our world, so there 049's procedures actually work and he's able to return people from the death with little to no side effects. So if someone fucking dies in Alagadda, and one of the lords/ambassador/king is unhappy by it for any reason, 049 is the one who they call. This gives him somewhat important status in higher society, so he has an apertunity to chill around them, but he doesn't use that privilege very often because he just doesn't want to.

But there IS one lord that somehow managed to get close to him and slowly they both fall for eachother and become lovers. My boy my bbg my child I personally gave birth to 035. Unfortunately this fuck gets in so many conflicts with nearly everyone that it's just unsafe to let others know that he has someone he cares about (spoiler: that didn't help).

And then one day 035 gets fucking assassinated🩷🩷 (also keep in mind that I am NOT refreshing my memory about how Alagadda works so I may be wrong about it and in that case I'm sorry)

Under Ambassador's secret order, because in my head he's an evil fuck who wants all the power to himself, a group drags my boy to the sea and just drops him in there. The sea decomposes his og body and teleports him the fuck to Earth, this is also where his black shit originates from because as far as I remember it's also black. But that's not it, because ambassador sensed 035's closeness with doctor and decided to get rid of him too for a good measure. Idk what they do to him, plot holes are my hoes, but anyway he gets sent to Earth too.

But they had very different experiences with all that teleportation stuff because in the process 049 gets amnesia and doesn't remember anything about Alagadda or Dýo, even tho expects Earth work similar way to Alagadda subconsciously, and this difference and the fact that his procedures don't work anymore, with his anomalys way of sensing death on top, leads him to the pestilence as the only logical explanation.

Anyway at some point they finally met each other and Dýo is like "love! Omg I can't believe you're alive!♡" and Doc is like "who tf are you" and Dýo is DEVASTATED. Like honey we've been together for God knows how many decades fuck you mean no homo. He even thinks that doctor is just messing with him or mad at him for letting assassination happen, but unfortunately no and 035 learns that slowly and painfully. And unfortunately it leads to 035 following Doctor everywhere in hope to return his memories but from Doctor's perspective he's just being stalked by some weird dude that talks nonsense.

And so the same thing happens, they go back and forth about it, but unfortunately they both SUCK at communicating properly. And so Dýo is like "ok, fine, I'm fucking sick of you, I've never needed you anyway, chao" and he leaves and tries to live his own life and let go. And he's even being kind of successful, he can distract himself enough to almost forget about it, but his ass is doomed by the narrative. Every single time he practically gets over Doctor, they run into each other again. And every single time without a fail 035 can't help but get obsessed over and over again, drowning in all the memory and regrets and sleeping feelings waking up. At some he just gives up on returning 049's memories and tries to at least befriend his bird ass, and that's going at least somewhat successful. But not for long, at some point they get into argument again and one of them leaves. So really it's just "meeting again→sunny day before storm→storm→leaving and letting go→meeting again.." cycle of hell. But then Dýo gets locked in the crypt during one of these storms and he's found by foundation all this jazz.

They WILL tho one day get their happily ever after because I want these faggots to be happy and because they are meant for eachother, they're so bad separately that they're good together, but if I ever figure out how they will get there then I'll probably write a fanfic about it. I didn't cry at the end of episode six because they broke up.

I cried because Crowley was cast from Heaven for asking questions, for loving his creations, for being so *in love* with life he couldn't bare the thought of it being destroyed for nothing. So he asked questions. He challenged god's plans and ended up in hell with people that despise him for the very same - being too much in love with earth.

Then he found Aziraphale and suddenly his lonely existence no longer tasted like despair, it tasted like hope, like a choice, like the future. They intertwined their fates from the beginning and no amount of arguing against it ever undid that. After quite literally shielding each other not only from the world (Eden's storm and the star storm), but also from heaven and hell. Crowley found himself on earth outside of everything he was supposed to be, he found a way to simply *be*.

With Aziraphale.

He orbits around Aziraphale like the earth orbits around the sun, but you cannot expect a sunset to admire you back. Except that this one does. Aziraphale loves Crowley, but he has never fully cut the bonds tying him to heaven, never realized that asking questions wasn't the evil part but casting an angel out for doing so.

I cried because Crowley gave him EVERYTHING. He changed, he talked, he tried so fucking hard to be good enough for Aziraphale, worthy of being seen, worthy of being allowed to simply exist no matter what. And yes, there is an unhealthy codependency that he needs to untangle eventually.

But Aziraphale said "I forgive you" and he said "you are still going to fast for me Crowley" and he said "wait for me to catch up" he said "we can be good together in heaven, just allow me to give back what you lost."

And Crowley said "don't bother". I won't wait. There is nothing in heaven that would give me anything but pain and he KNOWS how much pain they can cause you. Yet Aziraphale still thinks Crowley is bad, is still stupid like heaven wants him to be, and not even Crowleys desperate love could make him realize that.

I cried because Crowley is alone. Lonely, carved out corner without anyone to share it with. All the pain and waiting, all the times he saved him, all the times they got drunk in the book shop and Crowley *could have* but didn't because he was scared of exactly this. Of being pushed away, of being told to leave. Of being told deep-down he is too tainted to be worthy of an angel's love, that he needs to become angelic to be worthy of Aziraphale (whether he actually meant it that way is an entirely different post).

Still, he lingers, watches as Aziraphale disappears. Now earth is nothing but a living reminder of what has been, what could have been, and six thousand years of loved lost.

With all its faults, i enjoyed the story of Stalker 2. It feels like home.

After 2nd pt, I grew to love Faust, easily one of the most memorable and iconic characters of the franchise. I still wish monolith and ex-monolith had more screentime besides being the go-to adversaries for exploration shootouts. The few quests they had are not enough, especially given the tragedy of Strider and his entire group. I'm still not over his death, he of all people in the franchise deserves better. The way he tried to shoot himself right after the Signal went off broke my heart. And the death scene, where he's free of monolith influence again, realizing he nearly killed Skif........................

Surprised by Korshunov, like super surprised. First time i did Varta-Varta-Strider-Strelok-Doctor (i also did permutations of the last two to see the three other endings), and this time I did Spark-Spark-Varta-Strelok-Doctor. I expected him to be a typical soldier bossman, someone who would betray me and who would try to off me, but nothing like that, and he actually respects Skif and does not consider him to be a meat on legs. He's very convincing, menacing but not evil, likable also. The "i can't even bury them" speech hit right in the heart - he's got his men at the top of his priorities, and it's a breath of fresh air to see a military man in a media to not think of his subordinates as of disposable.

Dalin Jr. is the same revelation. I thought he'd be a scumbag, a scientist without morals, another trickster, but nope, man with a heart of gold following after his not so good father. Feeling a bit guilty for not trusting him the entire time the first playthrough. I laughed my ass off during that one section at the institude where Korshunov casually watched Skif assault Dalin, as if it's a regular occurence at the place.

Scar is one big holy shit. I both love him and hate him. He's definitely not something i thought him to be from Clear Sky, but he's entertaining nonetheless. He is actually the ruthless and crazy motherfucker i believed Korshunov to be, with absolute fuck all about human lives. Proper terrorist. And his S2 story tying with CS - i can't help but pity him, groomed to be used as a modem by people with power.

Separate mention to Spark's Star. The guy had at most 10 minutes of screentime total, but he's got some real good chemistry with Skif.

Richter is a whole nother beast. He's like an autistic golder retriever puppy. Jesus, man, just kiss Skif already, you aren't gonna see him ever again anyway.

I swear, if the game was less depressing, Skif, Richer and Star could be boyfriends.

Strelok is everything i thought he'd be and would become. Definitely didn't disappoint, tho at one point i questioned where tf he got so much money hiring all those mercs lmao. He definitely had his brain scorched with an idea, but he's somehow still rational about everything else. Clever, stubborn in his ways, rigid, unable to see thru some subtler parts.

Really glad to meet Doctor proper after so many years. He's everything I expected him to be and more. What I didn't expect is him throwing heavy as fuck lines constantly, making me question every single step.

Degtyarov... had crininally little time after introduction. Certified badass tho.

Oh my god Agatha the bitch. This is the ruthless person I believed Dalin to be. The Varta ending is easily THE BAD one because of who she is, who she is serving and what their plans are, though not even remotely as depressing as Scar's. The old hag had my homie Korshunov follow her without any doubt. Ugh I wish there was a way to knock some sense into him....

For the Varta ending, Strelok literally says they're going to use the Thread project for something during that one infiltration mission with the TVs, but he doesn't know exactly what for. I followed Korshunov's reasoning and logic that the Zone is to be destroyed, but somehow, i disregarded Agatha completely. And then the ending hit me. Ye, the Zone is gone, but something far more sinister is in its place, with project X finished after so many years and its goals fulfilled. And those TVs at the end, being creepy. Nah, never picking that one again.

The Scar ending is easily the most depressing one. First Korshunov kills Richter, but then turns out that O-Soznanie is legit and exists in the subtle matter, and Dalin is ecstatic to finally be able to talk to his father. And then the O-Soz representative sends you to the generators, and it's surprisingly peaceful and not dangerous at all, rainbows everywhere, and you chill near the blue campfires under emissions with your now suddenly alive-but-not-really Richter and other dead homies from the subtle matter (Strider is suspiciously absent), and Richter shows you the way like a fucking disney princess. And you think, hey, it's not as bad as I thought it would be. WRONG. You get to the X-lab, and Scar is having a life crisis cuz his entire life in the Zone was a lie, his memories have been imprinted from another stalker, and he himself was programmed for this exact job, but then he comes thru and decides to go into the fish tank anyway. And then it's butterflies, poppies, unicorn farts everywhere, all dead people are alive, and Skif be having a grand time of his life chatting with homies.... UNTIL THE FUCKEN CAMERA SHIFTS, and turns out it's all in his head. Yeah no, never again.

The Strelok ending is probably a good one. Or at least neutral. He gives his reasoning, he tells everyone to fuck off, he prohibits exit and enter into the Zone, and he's now the entity guarding her like a loyal dog. The Zone supposedly (because let's face it, this balding mofo's in charge now) has no masters anymore, no one can abuse her ever again, but she's not free either. Tho it's kinda a weird one with him. He wanted the Zone gone, but now he put her under his own protectorate? I mean, it's been 10 years, a man can change, but... would be interesting to hear a more elaborate explaination than "she gave me a new life" or smth.

And then the Doctor ending. Some say it's a bad one, but I really do love it the most. I knew i wouldn't be able to kill him as Strelok wanted, and he gives very compelling arguments against Strelok's crusade... and you spare Doc, run to hide into the basement of his house from the emission... only to find more notes down there, talking about the O-Soz agents and him using them and scaners and alpha-artifacts for something... makes you question if he wasn't the mastermind behind all this. Maybe even his couriers were behind the explosion at Skif's khrushovka. Maybe it was a setup to bring an outsider to make his plan come true. And then, at the end, as the Zone finally frees herself of her shackles, expanding worldwide (i doubt it's an actual expansion, more like local anomalies appearing worldwide), Doc morphs into Faust and makes you question the entire Doctor's story. Was it Faust the whole time? Was he not killed by Skif? Is he a manifestation, an illusion? Was it Faust himself that is the mastermind behind all this? And then remember that reactivated monolith-Strider tried to kill doctor. Was it a coincidence? Was it a command to kill Doctor Kaymanov by O-Soz, was it a command by O-Soz to kill Faust while pretending to be Doctor because he's sorta gone rogue/against his original program, or was it a command by Faust himself to get Skif to trust the illusion?

And the awesome part is that all of the endings-related parties are right about their respective things.

This is the game narrative-wise I wanted Veilguard to be tbh. But here I am, left alone to geek out about stalker 2 instead. Oh and in this game they drop some serious lines, most notably Doctor, as I mentioned above. His "But how does one know the value of freedom if one has never been free?" hit me like a truck. Strider's monologue after his death about monolithians being puppets brings tears to the eyes.

Ugh, this makes me think what kinda ending woulda been if Strider was alive and still himself, if he went into the aquarium instead of everyone else.

Oh by the way, the Faust theme, 0:40 - 0:50, I swear I can hear "let me out". Not creepy at all, but checks out.

“You made yourself a different person than the one I loved” – on Kit’s letter, his projections & idea of Ty

aka where i try to make sense of kit’s letter in the context of who ty was to him. basically i think that understanding that kit may not have had an accurate image of ty in his head helps to contextualise why kit believes the things he does, regardless of whether they’re fair to ty or not. it makes more sense reading lines like:

“in all the world, kit had never met anyone he believed to be so incapable of evil”

“all his energy had gone into ty, all his devotion and hopes for the future”

because you can see so clearly how much kit was projecting onto ty. ty, more than a friend—or whatever you might call it—was also the personification of this new world and all it meant for kit. kit saw him as this overwhelming force of good, beautiful as an angel, someone who not only wouldn’t do evil but was “incapable” of it.

so you can kind of see why everything was lost for kit once ty went through with the necromancy: because by doing so he was breaking the image kit had of him. of ty as a saviour of sorts from kit’s previous life, the person who convinced him to stay, who made kit feel like he was really a part of something, something magical and exclusive that not everyone got to be.

further evidenced by other lines:

“he had been too fixated on losing ty to tell him what he needed to hear” -> kit knows he should have told ty much sooner how he really felt about the situation. kit knows he deflected and in various ways lied to ty about trying to bring livvy back. but kit had wanted to stay by ty’s side, stay included in ty’s plans, more than his desire to tell ty the truth that he hated the idea.

“you made yourself a different person than the one i loved” -> ty as a person being shaped by kit’s projections of all his hopes and dreams, the face of this new world kit was drawn into, the first person he really got close to after he was pulled from one world to another, the person who convinced him to stay.

was the “person [kit] loved” an accurate reflection of who ty really was, flaws and all? unlikely. and the image of ty in kit’s head didn’t allow room for the real ty’s complicated, overwhelming grief, either, and the ways he would try to cope with it: and i believe this is part of why kit was so shocked by what happened and why he’s still so angry at ty. because ty proved to him that he wasn’t what kit believed him to be, and so all of kit’s hopes for his new life came crumbling down.

do i think it’s fair to ty? no, i don’t. but i think both can be true: that kit is upset and had gone through a traumatic situation, and has valid feelings about it while also understanding that he had a very skewed perception of ty that wasn’t fair to him.

mostly i think we need more room for understanding ty’s feelings*. how it must have felt to lose his twin sister in a horrifying way, devised a plan that (to him) seemed completely reasonable** only to have his best friend switch up on him last minute, tell ty he loved him mid-ritual, later say he wished he’d never met ty and basically tell ty that he was selfish and then on top of that leave without saying goodbye.

i also stand by my belief that “how long do you think it will take you to forgive me” is something both ty and kit could/should be asking each other, not just one way around. i honestly don’t understand why both kit and ty would think only kit needs to forgive ty and not both ways. mostly i just don’t think the narrative that ty’s the only one who needs forgiving is very fair, or makes much sense with their characterisation + the context + what actually happened.

in sum, when kit says “you made yourself a different person than the one i loved”, the person he’s referring to is an idealised version of ty whom he had projected all his hopes and dreams for the future onto, and by going through with the necromancy ty completely shattered kit’s understanding of him. this is consistent with other lines in his letter: “you wanted that more than you wanted me”, “when you brought livvy back, you changed yourself” (did ty really change? or did he just prove to be different from kit’s idea of him? genuine question), and perhaps most strongly evidenced by this line: “i don’t know the person you are now. you took yourself away from me. i can’t forgive that.” i don’t understand why he can’t forgive ty for not being the person kit thought he was, nor how on earth ty was supposed to know this, but i digress.

* i hope this is addressed in TWP because between TDA and now, we’ve had FAR more insight into kit’s thought processes than ty’s and as such we’re only really seeing one side of the situation.

** i also think part of the glaring misunderstanding between kit and ty can be understood from their respective backgrounds. obviously for kit, growing up away from the shadowhunter world, something like necromancy is completely out of the question. the way it would be for you or me. but ty grew up in a world where bringing people back to life was something that could and had actually happened. so it’s a far crazier, more impossible idea to kit than it would’ve been to ty.

Eclipse huffed as he stared at the three daycare attendants standing around the chair he was tied in. He had intended to just teleport in and quickly get out, but he was quickly met with guns pointed at him by the computer, a forcefield, and Monty grabbing him. "So what? You think tying me to a chair will stop me?" He knew he was defenseless. Moon took the Star.

"And you think we can't either?" Moon smirked with a bit of bite to his words. "We have the Star, so you can't teleport out of this situation."

"I'll find a way. When I get out of this I'll-" Eclipse started only to get interrupted by Sun.

"You'll do what? Mildly inconvenience us again? Erase everyone's memories again? What good will it do you if we can fight back?" Sun growled. He was tense, but quickly relaxed as he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder as Earth lightly rubbed her thumb to try and calm him.

Eclipse went quiet. What was he to say? Sun was right, yet he refused to believe it. Because he's a villain! Everyone hates him! Yet why did he not feel entirely... Unsafe. Was it Earth maybe? He figured it could be, but the last they talked, he insulted her.

"Well you have me now, so what the hell are you going to do to me? Hm? Torture me? Because if that's the case then fine! I'm too tired for this anyways." He growled, though a bit quietly.

Earth sighed as she sat to Eclipse's height. "I'm willing to give you a second chance."

"Oh please. You really think I'll believe that after our last conversation?"

"I like to think you will..." She added, her voice soothe.

"...Fine. What do you want me to do then, hm? Apologize? Because that's not happening."

Sun crossed his arms, huffing as he rolled his eyes. Even Moon seemed interested in what both Earth and Eclipse had to say. "Can I just go clean... Or something? I don't want to be here with him."

Moon looked over and took note of Sun's clear discomfort. "If you need to step out, then do what's best for you. If something goes astray I or the Computer will alert you."

Sun simply nodded as he shakily made his way out of his and Moon's commons.

Eclipse simply watched as he turned his attention to Moon. "You're staying...?" He seemed startled at his own confusion. What the hell was he saying?! He didn't need anybody!

"I'm not leaving Earth by herself with you of all people."

Earth smiled "I appreciate that, but I'm fully capable of handling myself." She lightly stated.

"Oh I know, but I still want you to be safe." Moon smiled, making Earth grin back.

"God help me..." Eclipse mumbled. But soon sighed without thinking. This wasn't a normal sigh, however... No, this was a sigh of jealousy and sadness. The last time he ever had someone smile towards him was... Lunar.

"Feeling left out big guy?" Moon teased, making Eclipse flinch.

"May I interject?" Zero asked suddenly.

"Uh, sure? Is everything okay?" Moon looked towards the intercom.

"I am detecting high levels of stress from Eclipse. He seems as if in distress. Though he is not showing it." Zero pointed out.

"Detecting feelings of guilt, pain, and lonelyness as well." One commented as well.

Both Moon and Earth turned towards Eclipse, who wasn't struggling anymore. Didn't move, nor say a word. He just stared at the floor... Shaking... Was...

Was Eclipse crying?

Eclipse was crying!

Moon sat there now shocked. Eclipse of all people was crying? Earth picked up on Moon's stunned state as well.

"It's very natural to cry in a situation like this… Especially after all that was told to us."

"Why should we feel sympathy after everything he's done to us?! To Sun! To Lunar! This man has been nothing but evil from when I woke up!"

"You really think I can't feel?" Eclipse suddenly started, making Moon jump. "You think I don't feel regret?! I have been antagonized about my feelings by that stupid Solar Flare for months! And you know what?! He's right! I have been lonely! I have been feeling guilt! I only killed Lunar to get at you two, but I realize that I lost my only friend."

Moon couldn't help but grow just a bit angry, but he decided to say nothing as Sun came back.

"I heard yelling, is everything… okay?" Sun stopped in his tracks as he saw Eclipse panting and oil leaking from his eyes.

"I… I'm in so much pain, so tired. I have the power of Gods and yet I don't know what to do with it."

Pain? Were Sun and Moon right? Was the star actually killing Eclipse? So he did care after all… he just refused to acknowledge it around the others.

"Oh you poor thing…" Earth sniffled. She knew she didn't have to cry, yet she couldn't help but feel the genuine pain in Eclipse's words.

"Earth…?" Sun called to her softly.

"I'm alright…" she smiled to Sun, "I just feel that he's being honest."

"I get that you don't like me. I'm not asking you to. Hell you don't even have to forgive me because I know you won't. Just. Let me leave. That's all I ask."

"And have you go back to whatever you were doing?! No!" Sun yelled.

Eclipse sighed. Of course it wouldn't be that easy. So what did he- huh?

Eclipse sat stunned as a feeling of warmth flooded his sensors. Earth… was hugging him. Why was she…? After everything he said to her?! Tears started up again in his shocked state. He hadn't let anyone hug him, let alone touch him in… so long. He never wanted Lunar's hugs.

Lunar… he had been so cruel to him. He abused him so much. And for what? Because he was simply just nice to him? And yet the little one had still loved him after everything… but he lost that. Eclipse saw that. And in the end he only killed him out of an act of what? Revenge? Jealousy?

Oops he sat there too long.

"Uh- Eclipse?" Sun started, "Hello?" He waved a hand in Eclipse's face making the latter blink and recoil.

"Get away from me-!" Eclipse cried.

Sun put his hands up in surrender and backed up. "Okay, okay-!"

"He's scared." Earth pulled away from the hug, much to Eclipse's dismay.

"What?" Both Sun and Moon questioned.

"He's scared… He's injured and afraid."

"I'm not injured…"

"Not just your Core… but your heart. Your heart is heavy."

Eclipse said nothing.

"I'm untying him… We need to get him fixed."

"Wait what?! Earth you aren't implying we keep him here! Are you? After everything?!" Sun tried to stop Earth from breaking the bounds.

"I believe he's not going to fight, Sun. I don't think he has it in him right now…" Earth and Sun looked towards the one in question.

Eclipse sat there panting, trying to hunch over, still crying, but less than before. He seemed tired.

"I mean he has been stating that he's been exhausted… Computer scan Eclipse for the damage."

"Scanning." One starts.

"Damage level to his body and core are dangerously high and could shatter if he continues to use the Star." Zero finishes.

"Thank you." Moon hummed and turned to Earth and Sun. "I'm going to hide the Star away. You two untie him and make sure he doesn't move too fast. I need to grab a few tools."

"You can't just-!"

"Sun, trust me on this."

"...Alright. I will."

Moon left and both celestial animatronics got to work on the binds. As soon As Eclipse was free, he immediately curled into a fetal position on the chair, gripping at his chest cavity.

Earth gently scooped up Eclipse, oddly making him yelp, yet he didn't fight it. Instead, he curled into her for warmth. He clinged to her, sniffling softly as she sat on Sun's couch and started gently rocking back and forth. So this was her motherly side Eclipse always heard about.

Sun watched carefully, making sure Eclipse didn't try anything funny. Though to his surprise, Eclipse just fell asleep in Earth's arms. And soon all he could see was just an emotionally damaged child.

A child in need of help…

Sun sighed as he joined Earth on the couch, though he distanced himself the best he could from Eclipse. While he saw how damaged he was, Sun still could feel hatred in his own heart. This was still the source of all his problems after all…

Hi! Is it ok if you elaborate and/or explain how disabled characters within Wings of Fire aren’t treated well and/or written well within the series (and/or that Wings of Fire is very weird about disabled characters) please?

sorry it took me a bit anon, but i needed to gather my thoughts.

But basically; while there is alot i could focus on, that even with disabled characters that are good, their disabilty isn't really all that researched (both starflight and tamarin for example, but i don't know enough to make a whole post about them), or how narrative often treats them as disposable or not as important as rest of the characters (ospery literally exist just to be killed. and yes alot of characters die in wof, but he is one book and then is killed off for other characters progression) (also whiteout. but i will make analysis of her another time). or whatever stonemover had going on.

and even with jerboa iii / boa, she hides her missing talons out of shame in her story, but it almost seems like its so the auhtor is more comofrtable with her, and idunno maybe she stops doing that later but it does feel gross to me. < and yes i am aware that loss of her talons was in a traumatic way but it doesn't really justify it, especially with how other disabled characters are written.

and even fucking Scarlet, who is disabled as a punishment (in the narrative, not the story itself. also she hides her scar in some instances with animus magic, and yes im especially including her).

clay's disability is mostly forgotten both by books and fandom, and much more.

but i do think one of the things that angers me the most is chameleon, and how you can't really fix that without literally not making him a villain. HIS WHOLE MOTIVATION is that is he is disabled, angry at the ableism, and changing himself due to that. and greed too i guess, but you can't really ingore the disability part, and i just look at how he is written. HE IS LITERALLY EVIL BECAUSE HE IS DISABLED... in text he has a facial difference (even if he is rarley drawn with it), a sleeping disorder, and of course, not being able to change his scales. its the most visible one in fact. he is kicked out from his kingdom literally because he is disabled, and he is angry, and finds the scroll, and does evil things or whatever. (and also has peril and is a questionable father).

I can't really describe how angry i am at his character existing. And you can't fix him! At best you could have rainwings with his disability who aren't evil, but even then, his motivation is that he is disabled, and its his primary motivation. It fuels his anger, its why he takes on multiple forms, its why he attacks Kinkajou, its probably why he tries to change Peril. < also greed, but im ignoring this on purpouse because it isnt relevant to the discussion and it doesn't erase the fact that his main motivation is that he is angry because he is disabled and how he changes himself into different dragons, and how he has distain for other rainwings, all that.

Why is it a problem? Well because it implies disability can make you evil and also even if we are symphatetic to Chameleon, there is no solution for his anger. The problems aren't fixed. And we never get another Rainwing character who can't change their scales. His evilness is tied to his disability, both of them connected. If one was to fix that, you would need to redeem him or not make him a villain in the first place, but then what is the point of his character. Its not just lack of reaserch or few things in poor taste, ITS HIS WHOLE CHARACTER!

And for the record, im not calling tui an evil horrible bigot, but she is not immune to bias. Its not just ableism of course, series has other issues, but its really really glaring.

Coming back to some characters; how Boa hides her disabilty, its of course of internalized ableism, but characters do not exist in a vaccum. Blind characters are commonly potrayed with cataracts (clody, foggy eyes), regardless of their actual type of blindess, or with something covering their eyes (like a blindfold). disabled characters are often killed off or not important to the narrative. While we do have few disabled protagonist, its after their pov, so we don't get a point of view of a character who is disabled.

Im probably missing something, but i think its enough things to say hey. Wings of Fire has ableism problem.

also a lot of people completely miss genesis as a person outside of loveless reciting and degradation, i feel, to the point that sometimes it's hard to read fic without finding him being essentially an odd stereotype of his usual crisis core behavior...
