Fourteen: What you have done is terrible, and now you carry it with you -- "Four Walls" by Bastille

It was nearly 4pm when you returned to Quantico. You flew up the stairs because the elevator was taking too long. You barreled through the glass doors, earning confused and stunned looks from the entire team, including Derek who was getting ready to leave.

“Nope,” you shook your head at Derek, pointing at him to put his stuff down. “Team meeting. All of you. Where’s Garcia? Rossi?”

“Up here,” Garcia said quietly, standing in Rossi’s office, him behind her. She looked scared. You wondered how much Rossi told her.

“Let’s go,” you nodded toward the conference room. 

You bounded up the stairs, into the conference room, flicking the lights on. You paced at the front of the room as everyone filed in, filling the chairs around the table.

“What’s going on, kid?” Morgan asked, resting his hands on the table. “Are you okay?”

“No,” you answered honestly, ceasing your pacing for a moment. “Rossi, would you like to start?”

He pointed behind him to the bullpen. “I need to see where Strauss is.”

“I’ll start, then,” you nodded, placing your hands on your hips. You removed them almost immediately, feeling the cuts on your back stretching and beginning to sting all over again. At least you’re wearing a dark shirt, in case they start to bleed.

“What is this about?” Garcia asked. “Rossi gave me a location to look into, but it’s just a random motel three hours from here, and everyone’s being so secretive, so can we please—”

“Baby girl,” Morgan shushed Garcia. “Give her a minute.”

“JJ, the files you’re missing are not random, or a coincidence, or a freak accident,” you began, watching them closely.

She stared at you. “...okay.”

“Hotch took them with him when he left,” you said. “And he’s been killing those unsubs since.”

“What?” Morgan said, immediately defensive. “Kid, that’s…that’s a big accusation.”

“Do you think I’d be standing here saying it if I didn’t know that?” you snapped. Morgan stared at you for a second, but eventually relented.

“Are you sure about this?” Reid questioned.

“I’m positive,” you replied. “I don’t want to be, and I wouldn’t be telling you this if I wasn’t certain.”

“How do we know this?” Emily asked. “Have you spoken to him?”

“Yes,” you said, pushing the fact that you had sex with him both times far from your mind. “I just got back from speaking with him. Strauss had me follow him this morning when he left, and he realized I was tailing him.”

“Of course he did,” Morgan said. “This is Hotch we’re talking about.”

“Yes, but it’s not the Hotch we knew,” you insisted. “He admitted to killing Holman and Edwards, and told me there are more.”

“I still don’t— I don’t understand this, I mean, why would Hotch do this?” JJ asked. “We can’t be certain based off a few misplaced files, I mean, that’s ridiculous.” She laughed as she said it, utter disbelief covering her face. “It’s Hotch, he wouldn’t…”

You looked at her solemnly, shaking your head. “I’m sorry.”

“No,” she said, shaking her head back at you. “This…this can’t be—”

“It’s true,” Strauss said, breezing into the room with files in hand. She passed them to each member of the team, and one to you. “This is the investigation that is now open into the murders committed by Agent Hotchner. Can you turn the screens on?”

“Yeah,” you nodded, reaching for the remote, turning the TV on. CCTV footage appeared instantly, and you had to look away.

You hadn’t noticed the camera across the street at the gas station. You should have known it would have one. They almost always have at least one, no matter how shitty the quality of the camera might be.

The image was grainy, but clear enough. Hotch had you against the car, your chin in his grip. The room was silent as they watched Hotch force you to look at him. Force you to listen. And you did.

Rossi was the first to speak, only for you to hear. He stood next to you, resting his hand on your shoulder. But you refused to look at him.

“Are you alright?” he asked. “I didn’t know he hurt you.”

“I’m fine,” you said, louder for everyone to hear. You lifted your head, and Rossi’s face softened.

“Y/N…” He went to touch your arm, most definitely to offer comfort, but you slapped his hand away, the noise drawing everyone’s attention.

“Sorry,” you said. “Anyway, um— He got in my car and held me at gunpoint and I had to drive us away to where there was no cell service,” you admitted. “We argued. He told me to leave him alone and not get the team involved in this, but obviously,” you waved to the room, “I couldn’t do that.”

“You’re bruised,” Reid said quietly, his fingers touching his chin.

Instinctively, you raised your hand to cover where Hotch had his grip just hours ago. It was strong, but you didn’t think it was strong enough to bruise already. 

“This is obviously not a normal circumstance,” Strauss began, “but normally, the team the agent belonged to would not handle this. I am overriding that rule because I believe you are the only set of people who can find him. And we must find him. I received a call a few hours ago that another unsub had been murdered.”

Your eyes snapped to Strauss’s. “When?”

“Two days ago,” she replied. “His name was Steven Landam.” 

JJ locked eyes with Rossi. “That’s one of the files I’m missing.”

Strauss sighed. “I figured as much.”

“I’ll get the list of all of the files,” JJ said, pushing her chair back from the table and leaving the conference room.

“Agent L/N,” Strauss said, motioning to you. “I need to speak with you privately.”

You nodded, following her out of the room and into Rossi’s office. But Rossi did not follow like you expected him to. 

Strauss shut the door and stood in front of it. You didn’t know if she thought you might run, but it unnerved you nonetheless.

“Is there anything you would like to tell me regarding your relationship to Agent Hotchner?” she asked, keeping her gaze trained on you.

You swallowed. “No ma’am.”

“Do I need to ask again?” she pressed, raising her eyebrows at you. “What did I witness on that camera?”

“You witnessed him trying to intimidate me into lying to you and the rest of the BAU,” you replied firmly. “You should be thankful he didn’t succeed. Or do worse.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“He threatened to kill me,” you said. “Multiple times.”

She studied you. “But there is nothing to your relationship with him.”

“There is no relationship at all,” you replied, meaning it for the first time. “There’s nothing.”

“Should I take you off this case?”

You tried not to let that get to you. “If you do, I don’t think you’ll find him.”

She nodded once. “Good answer. That is all.” She opened the door and stepped out, and you followed, returning to the conference room. Where you should be.

JJ was back with her list of missing files, the team crowding around the table still. She crossed off Holman, Edwards, and now Landam. That left three other names. More than you wanted there to be, but it could have been worse.

“We’ll need to narrow those down to two, hopefully one that we’re sure of,” you said. “He’s determined, and he knew where he was going. We don’t have much time to catch up with him.”

You felt it when everyone turned to look at you. You continued to stare at the list, but the silence remained.

“Can you guys stop staring at me?” you asked softly. “Please?”

“Sorry,” Reid murmured, shifting in his chair.

“I know it’s a lot,” you said. “I know I’m asking a lot. And I know you have questions, but I can’t answer them until we find him, so we need to just— We need to find him, okay?” You lifted your head. “Help me find him.”

“Okay,” Morgan nodded. “Let’s start where we always start. Profile. What do we know?”

“He’s killing unsubs from cases we worked on,” JJ began. “The unsubs were acquitted or given a short sentence.”

“Were any of them not convicted at all?” you asked.

“Uh, I’d have to check, maybe,” JJ said. “Garcia, can you bring up um— Matt Philips, Danny Newman, and William Pearson?”

“Yep, yep, and…yep,” Garcia replied, her fingers clicking on the keyboard of her laptop. “Philips was acquitted,” she said. “Newman served two years, got out on good behavior, and Pearson…Pearson died last year in prison.”

“Oh,” you blinked. There was one impossible option, at least. “Okay. So, Philips, he was acquitted, what did he do?”

“That was the same year as Holman,” Morgan said. “He did not like Hotch.”

You looked at Morgan. “What do you mean?”

“I remember that,” JJ said. “They were at each other’s throats.”

“Was there ever a physical fight?” you asked.

“No,” Rossi said. “It never got that far. But I remember him. When we got the news that he was acquitted, it didn’t sit right with Hotch. It didn’t sit right with any of us, but it bugged Aaron.”

“Bugged him how?” you asked, frustration settling in. It had to be Philips that Aaron was after now, but that meant nothing to you if all you had was the name.

“I don’t know,” Rossi replied. “He didn’t talk about it. I’d ask, and he’d say he was fine. And we went on other cases, and I stopped asking. I thought Aaron had let it go.”

You sighed. You needed more than that. “What did he do?”

“He murdered entire families,” Reid said. You could tell he didn’t want to tell you about the case, but he continued, because you stared him down. “Wife, son, and father. He…” Reid averted his eyes to his hands. “He made the father watch.”

You closed your eyes, all of it making sense now. “The others killed families too, didn’t they?”

“Yep,” Morgan said.

“Okay, so Hotch is killing these unsubs because they didn’t…what?” JJ said, exasperated. “Get the punishment they deserved?”

“Exactly that,” Rossi said quietly. “He’s taking matters into his own hands by killing them.”

“So, he’s a vigilante,” Emily said.

“Kind of,” Reid replied. “Vigilantes typically operate in a group or in a specific community, and they don’t discriminate between criminal charges. Technically, Hotc— He’s on a revenge spree.”

“I figured that,” you said, settling down in a chair and putting your head in your hands. “What does that mean, Reid, normally?”

“Well, it—” He stopped himself.

“Reid, please.”

“It means he’s incredibly hard to predict,” Reid added. “Unless we know the exact, specific reasoning and details of the event—”

“We do,” you insisted, lifting your head. “We know Foyet killed his wife and son, then he killed Foyet, but it wasn’t enough revenge, so now he’s killing these old unsubs. Why isn’t that enough?”

“Because these aren’t personal,” Reid explained, looking just as pained as you felt. “These aren’t old friends or family members that wronged him.”

You understood that, but it didn’t make you feel any better. “Where does Philips live?”

Garcia typed frantically. “Stony Creek. About two hours south of here.”

You furrowed your eyebrows. “He went west, though, he wasn’t going south.”

“I know,” Garcia. “You were outside Bridgewater at the motel. Almost to West Virginia.”

“Okay, where would Philips be, then?” Emily asked. “Where’s he from?”

Garcia typed quickly, her eyes scanning her screen underneath her glasses. “Uh, born in Texas, moved to Missouri when he was five, stayed there until he was twelve, then moved to Ohio.”

“Okay, um…” you paused, trying to get your bearings. “He probably— Fuck, I don’t know.” You leaned over to Garcia. “What else can you tell us about Philips?”

“Well,” she chuckled. “He graduated high school top of his class — weird. Never went to college, bounced around states and jobs for his early twenties, racked up a few petty misdemeanors until his first sexual assault charge when he was twenty-five. He collected those like candy for the next six years, then the murders of the families started. Two years of those across the US until we found him, and he was acquitted, not enough evidence, blah blah blah.” She scrolled. “Ah! He got married. Well, then got divorced two months later — yikes. And they— Oh no.”

“Oh no? What? Why oh no?” You leaned over, reading her screen. “Fuck.”

“What?” Emily asked.

“They have a son together,” Garcia said. “And his wife died ‘suddenly’ last year, so Philips has custody of the son.”

“What?” JJ said. “How did she die?”

“Natural causes,” you read from the autopsy report. “Natural causes at twenty-eight? Are you kidding me?”

“Okay,” Morgan said, trying to steer everyone back. “Okay— So Hotch is going after this guy because he killed families, got off easy, and now has custody of a son. He must think Philips killed his wife.”

“Uh, the autopsy report does look fishy,” Garcia said. “Not to defend him but…never mind.”

“Would Hotch go after a guy with a kid, though?” JJ asked. “Would he kill the kid, too?”

“I don’t know,” you muttered, shaking your head. You wanted to say no, he wouldn’t, but you didn’t know anything anymore. He was out for revenge, and he was going to do whatever it took to get it, no matter who got caught in the crossfire.

This unsub was smarter than Hotch thought. He wasn’t at all where Hotch thought he might be.

He should’ve seen that coming, considering this was the only unsub able to evade Hotch the way he had. It pissed Hotch off, yet he admired the chase. It made things interesting.

Besides, Hotch had one other unsub he had to handle. It seemed like a worthy pitstop.

The Bill is set in the fictional Sun Hill which makes up part of the also fictional Borough Of Canley. It's roughly set around the areas of Whitechapel, Stepney, Shadwell, Spitalfields, Portoken, Limehouse and parts of Aldgate, Bishopsgate, Shoreditch and Mile End. It's also known as the Tower Hamlets area. Mike Dashwood once describes its location as 'Tower Bridge and turn right'. Maps of Sun Hill show the Isle Of Dogs area.

The station address is: Sun Hill Police Station, 2 Sun Hill Road, Canley, London, E1 4KM. The telephone number is 020 7511 1642.

In 1988 Sun Hill (not Canley as a whole, just Sun Hill) was described as being 6 miles long and 2 miles wide.

Andrew Ross - DCI if I remember rightly he was part of MIT and kept coming over for murders - the Serial Killer/Des's Firebombing/Cathy's murders etc.

Frank Keane - DCI from MIT. Rubbed everyone up the wrong way and thought the sun shone out of his daughter - Emma's - arse.

Karen Lacy - stuck up DI from SO15 who immediately alienated most of Sun Hill after Emma's death by refusing to let her friends in uniform help and would only let them man a cordon and then told Jack that CID could only help if EVERYTHING was run by her and came back to her and her alone.

Tom Baker - TREV which was a fan-coined term that stands for Totally Reliable Extra Veteran'. Tom was an outstanding backup CID member for over a thousand episodes. He's even in the Guinness Book Of World Records for it.

Terry Knowles - Terry was a Special Constable who idolized Des and wanted to be like him. He tried to copy how he'd seen him pick up a woman and flirt at a blonde in a convertible. Unfortunately, it all went wrong when she stabbed him in the neck and severed his jugular and he died, leaving a 2-year-old son fatherless.

Doug Wright - husband of Sgt Nikki Wright. Nikki transferred to Sun Hill when she got fed up with the confusion over two Sgt Wright's and then having to work opposing shifts. He's based at Sun Hill but they cross over to police a football match. Sadly Doug ends up getting stabbed and they realise there's a Cop Killer on the loose after he taunts them and goes on to murder new recruit Billy Rowan on his very first day.

Mark Rollin - Lance Powell's Boyfriend/Fiance/Civil Partner/Husband. Mark is a Sgt in CO19 and keeps his sexuality hidden to avoid the banter and bullying. He goes to pieces after shooting dead Jeff Clarke and he and Lance separate - only for Lance to go out drinking to try to cheer himself up. It ended with Lance being murdered by a gay serial killer pair.

Steve Hodges - an irritating little man who was the Detective Superintendent at CIB at the time that Claire Stanton was undercover trying to get information to prove that Don Beech was corrupt. He expected Claire to pull evidence out of her arse and moaned constantly.

Rachel Kitson - Crime Scene Photographer who murdered old school friend turned Super Model Cindy Statham. She got away with it and someone else was accused and locked up...but then Jo went back and looked at the footage again as she had a niggling feeling. Rachel realised she was on to her and took her hostage at gunpoint. It was Stuart getting suspicious when he received a text calling him 'hun' and realising that something was very wrong that saved her life with seconds to go.

Important Reoccurring Characters (Civilians):

Rod Jessop - June's second husband after Jim. He is a headteacher and a good man who has 2 children of his own. At first, June isn't too sure as she thinks he's a little too keen but she warms to him and they fall in love and take early retirement together.

Irene Radford - Mother of Karl, Wayne and David Radford, a large crime family with a history going back decades with Gina. She takes Gina hostage at one point and she and David are literally seconds from killing Smithy and Kerry at another point!

Louise Larson - Wife of Pete Larson. Unhappily married but settled until she met Smithy. Feisty, sarcastic and full of one-liners, she kept him on his toes and they wanted to leave after she agreed to give evidence (Pete was arrested after almost murdering Smithy. I'm sensing a theme here).

Abi Nixon - The cause of Sam shrieking "MY DAUGHTER!!!!!" Had a fling with Matt Boyden - as you do. Then ended up pregnant and engaged to Hugh Wallis - a profiler - who manipulated Abi into it as revenge. He forced Sam to think her daughter was a victim of the Serial Killer. She keeps the baby and her relationship with her mother improves.

Cindy Hunter - Phil Hunter's wife who sees all he does on the side and - usually forgives him, even when a major criminal demands he be allowed to sleep with Cindy. Gregory doesn't force her to sleep with him but does take degrading pictures of her to wind Phil up. She still forgives him... but she can't get past finding out he has a daughter with another major criminal's wife when they are trying for a baby of their own and they finally split.

Jenny Delaney - The girlfriend of George Garfield at first, Jenny is the nurse who looks after Dave Quinnan when he is attacked and left for dead in a youth club. She and Dave fall in love and have an affair which ends up in George leaving Sun Hill. They marry but do not get their happily ever after as Dave and Polly grow closer... and closer...

Kristen Shaw - Drug dealer who Zain goes undercover to catch and he ends up falling for her. She accidentally murders Honey by shooting her when the gun goes off in a struggle (Honey was trying to get Zain to do the right thing and arrest her with him). Zain reluctantly puts Honey's body in the water and they try to escape but in the end, he can't go through with it and refuses to get on the boat with her to escape. He removed the bullets from her gun and so both ended up arrested.

James Tennant - The father of Amy Tennant. This storyline goes on forever for over a year and Neil and James get close and become good friends through it before Amy is found.

Scott Burnett - Scott is the husband of a woman who is found murdered. At first his best friend is charged with it and as his FLO, Honey helps support him through it. They fall in love and in a whirlwind romance they get married.... only for Honey to realise that Scott actually murdered his first wife!

Laura Meadows - Jack's long-suffering wife of almost 30 years who put up with a lot, including affairs. It comes to a head when Jack - in full midlife crisis mode - thinks he's in love with Debbie McAllister and wants to support her and her new baby. Debbie thinks of him mostly as a father figure and is horrified when he finally puts the moves on.

Lilian Rickman - Cass' mum is devastated when her daughter is killed by the Sun Hill Serial Killer. She travels down and bonds with the team and later invites them to the funeral in Liverpool which some travel up to and then have to go straight on shift once they get back to London. She later returns to tie up the sale of Cass' flat and she and Tony grow closer and end up sleeping together.

Marie Graham/Carver - The bereaved mother whose daughter killed herself after being accused of sleeping with underage students. She's an alcoholic who seemed to understand Jim and all his problems... and then started to abuse him 2 days after their marriage. (he should have known it was a bad omen when he and June almost kissed the day of the wedding when trapped with Polly and Tony!)He is accused of abusing her before he ends up in the hospital (Gabriel hit him over the back of the head with a vodka bottle - long story) and he cracks under accusations and shows his many wounds. He leaves Marie and goes on to recover and get back together with June... only for Marie to turn up on THEIR wedding day and cause a scene at the reception and then fall down the stairs and knock herself out. Jim, with a sprained ankle, ends up going into hospital too!

Pauline Smith - Smithy's mum seen in Killer On The Run. His father was an abusive drunk who used to knock her and Smithy around until Smithy was old enough to go out with his friends. Smithy has little to do with his unnamed father and next to no contact. Pauline adores her son and is very proud of him. They are close and Smithy has a key to her house. He also had an unnamed little brother as a PC (mentioned in Soft Talking) but this seemed forgotten when he returned as a Sgt.

Part 4: Killadelphia Isn't For The Weak

[Sitting on the couch, her eyes glued to the TV, the shrimp lo mein on her chopsticks was coming toward her mouth as she listened to Derek Morgan and she nodded. “David Parker Ray? How about John Edward Robinson? See, at any given time, we have at least twenty-five open cases. Every year we're able to close around fifteen, yet new ones still seem to pop up. There are more serial killers out there than you may think.” It was true. It was completely true. She knew she was a glutton for punishment. When she finally did get some down time, she spent it watching things that sounded exactly like her day job, but it was nice to watch someone else do the thinking. She was about to take another bite when she heard the doorbell and her brow arched. Security had always been important to her. She saw people getting hurt every single day due to faulty locks and cameras that just didn’t work. And she wasn’t going to be a victim if she could help it. She walked over and looked on the little screen that was beside her door, something she had installed after she had a case where a man stalked women and when they looked through the peephole, he would shoot through the door. She rolled her eyes when she saw Dom standing there. She reached for the lock and then opened the door leaving the chain over. He chuckled when she saw his dark eye peek through the crack.

“You’re alive? Well, then I guess ya just wanted to stand me up.” Shit. She had forgotten about the lunch. She shook her head, closed the door, pushed the chain over and then opened it up.] Hey, I’m sorry…I’ve just been swamped and I…[He finished her sentence. “Forgot. As per fuckin’ usual, Vance.” And then he just walked in and walked past her.] Won’t you come in…[She closed the door behind him and turned to walk into the living room since he seemed set on going in there.] You know what I’ve got going on, but I’ve got a desk full of cases and the other analyst job is still open and there’s only two candidates. One that’s fresh out of training and the other…well, I just don’t like his vibe. Nothing personal. [He dropped down onto the couch, picked up her takeout container and sniffed it. “You’re just a control freak.” She walked over and snatched it out of his hand.] Don’t do that…I don’t know where your nose or your hands’ve been. And it isn’t that I’m a control freak, I just like people poking around in my things. [His hand came out to grab her beer and swatted it. He chuckled and pulled his hand back. “That’s the same thing, Thal.” She shook her head.] No it isn’t. Now, why are you here? [He blew out a breath and shook his head. “I went to see a few of my informants. There’s not a lot on your trafficker. Most of the runners are secondary runners. The product being moved is going through so many hands, it’s hard to find any focused direction.” She ended up sitting down on the couch, her brows lifting.] Well…did you find a direction or are you just here to eat my lo mein? [He looked from her to the TV. “Well, I’m not here to watch Criminal Minds. And don’t you get enough of that shit at. work? You can’t help yourself, can you?” She pulled a face, but didn’t say anything. “Alright…alright. I did find a source that seemed promising, but they’re paranoid as fuck. It’s gonna take me some time to get someone in there. But it’s the best I can do. But you’re not gonna like where it’ll likely go down.” Her eyes got a little wide.] Don’t tell me it’s the Badlands? [She was of course referring to the section of North Philadelphia and Lower Northeast Philadelphia that was known for all of the open-air drug markets and drug-related violence. “I wish. Nope.” He shook his head. “Kensington.” She groaned and her eyes closed for a second. It was single handedly the reason why Philadelphia had been known as Killadelphia because of the high murder rate.] Do you trust the sources you're gonna put in down there? [She looked over at him with an arched brow and he nodded. “Trust’em with my life.” She cleared her throat and nodded.] Alright, I trust you know what you’re doing. [She looked back over at him. “I trust your gut, Vance. I always have. I mean there was that one time you got that profile wrong, but nobody’s perfect.” She rolled her eyes.] It’s as much an art as it is a science. Sometimes you have to go with your gut and my gut was wrong. [He chuckled and just as he was about to lean back, his phone started to ring. After a quick exchange, she ended up shaking her head. “Gotta go. Body in Strawberry Mansion. You gonna eat that? You did force me to pay for my own lunch. It’s the least you can do.” She motioned for him to take it. He reached down, closed it and snatched it off the table.] Stay safe, Dom. [He chuckled as he headed toward the door. “I’m always safe.” He chuckled and smiled as he walked out the door. She sat there for a moment longer, but then went to the door to bolt it and put the chain over. She knew the doorman let him in because he flashed his detective's badge and it hadn’t been the first time Dom dropped by. The two of them had worked plenty of cases that lasted into the night, but he was a damn good cop and he believed in what she did. Not every detective thought behavioral characteristics and patterns could catch a criminal, but they couldn’t argue with the truth. And she always found her truth.]

Malibu Rising Riva Family Fancast

I loved Taylor Jenkins Reid’s latest novel “Malibu Rising” so much!!! :D She’s become one of my favorite authors and this is part of her interconnected universe shared with “Daisy Jones and the Six”, “Evelyn Hugo”, and a soon to be 4th book. This one took place in the 80s about the children of Mick Riva, a fictional singer in the style of Frank Sinatra/Elvis, and I loved them all so much. You can see how Taylor based them all off of 2nd generation celebrities like Brooke Shields, Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen, Julian Lennon, Drew Barrymore, and so many more. I made a fancast for “Daisy Jones and the Six” before they casted the miniseries and now wanted to do one for the Riva family as I saw them. They do all have blue eyes but it’s because of who I saw for Mick as I kept noticing how similar he was to Frank and Elvis, both known for their dark hair and blue eyes.

And for a bonus I saw Lili Reinhart as Ashley, a younger Stacey Keebler type as Lara, young Andre Agassi type as Brandon, Annie Murphy as Carrie, and Jenna Ortega as Vanessa. There’s so many guests at the party too and I did picture mostly actors in those parts too but just limiting those mentioned here to who had larger roles in the story. But back to the Riva family with gifs.

Nina (Kaya Scodelario. She’s based off many daughters of famous actors/singers like Brooke Shields and I can easily see Kaya playing this role especially compared to her show “Spinning Out”.)

Jay (Froy Gutierrez. The character reminds me in ways of Froy’s character Jamie from “Cruel Summer” but he’s much nicer and a prosurfer.)

Hud (Barrett Carnahan. This role feels so well for him and similar to how he was as Derek on “Cruel Summer”. He and Froy also have been compared as looking alike on that show. Also Hud’s based a lot on Julian Lennon who not only is a singer like his father but a photographer.)

Kit (Mary Mouser. I can easily see her playing this role too as how she is on “Cobra Kai” as Sam.)

Mick Riva (Edward Burns, especially in his younger years but even now.)

June (Jenna Coleman. Just everything about how June looked and being a waitress at her family’s restaurant and then raising the kids on her own just made me think of her.)

Casey (Brec Bassinger. She popped in my head as I was reading and got to her part and how she is as Courtney on “Stargirl”.)

Review 2021 Kuromyu – Namashitsuji Secrets of the Public School Arc

Disclaimer: This is not an unbiased review so please proceed knowing that it is heavily opinionated.

2nd Disclaimer: I have never seen the anime or read the manga of Black Butler. All of my thoughts are based on comparisons to previous musicals and comments from fans about how accurate their portrayal is. I understand this may turn some people off my review which is understandable but I think an important thing for shows is how accessible they can be for people who don’t know the source material.

 Overall Summary:

I think the show was excellent and showed respect to the old shows but also did quite a few new things. All the scenes and songs had clear thought put into them and the acting showcased these things very well. It was not quite like what I expected it was going to be like but now that I’ve seen it, I can’t quite think of what I expected. I think if you like 2.5D or if you like Black Butler or the actors in this show then you will enjoy the show quite a lot. It is not exactly the same as before from every standpoint apart from it being Black Butler so I would say don’t go in expecting it to be just the same.

 I will move to a spoiler review under the cut but plainly, this show is very good and I think all the actors did a great job.

As I normally do I am going to give my thoughts on story, acting, songs and directing, then mention some extra stuff that I might think of at the end. I am sorry if I bring up the fact that I’m British and went to boarding school like my parents too much.

Story: The story was mostly pretty easy for me to follow, especially as a British person who knows about Cricket and boarding schools. I haven’t seen Campania so the dolls confused me a little at first but that is completely on me for not having seen the previous show. When watching I was very confused about what was going on towards the end but looking back on it that was mainly because of my migraine and not because it wasn’t clear. Scenes were set out well and the camera work was done in a way to make it very easy to follow along. But omg the cricket made me a little upset. It was super fun and all. But it was so inaccurate XD. I guess I now know the pain of people who like tennis when they watch the Prince of Tennis.

Acting: I am going to go actor by actor and give a rough overview of what I thought of them

Tateishi Toshiki as Sebastian Michaelis

I felt like we didn’t get a terribly demonic Sebastian in this show but otherwise I loved Toshi as Sebastian. He felt very elegant and reserved most of the time which contrast well with the times in which he was annoyed at Ciel. He wasn’t terribly present in a lot of the show but I did really enjoy him when he was on stage. His singing voice is excellent and I loved hearing him sing, will go into more about it later during the song summaries.

Konishi Eito as Ciel Phantomhive

I thought Eito was amazing as Ciel and he is my favourite Ciel so far. He showed Ciel’s switch between cute and normal so well and it really made me think about how good of an actor Ciel is. I don’t know how he did what he did to his voice but he makes himself sound like a young child with a slightly higher and scrapey voice than normal and it really makes you think that he is very young. I know many people were worried that they were casting an adult as Ciel because they wanted to sexualise him and this was not the case at all. He only showed any skin in the very first scene when in the cage and he had the sheet/robe-thing showing his shoulder. His singing voice is quite a lot mature than the previous two Ciels, for obvious reasons, and I think it really helped me enjoy his songs.

Okayama Ryousuke as Soma Asman Kadar

While I would still say I prefer Sho’s Soma, mainly bc Sho is one of my fav actors and I am biased, I really liked Ryousuke’s Soma. He was super energetic and friendly and really gave off this air of innocence as he believes Ciel’s reasoning for him to join Weston. His cricket was also very fun. His singing was pretty okay. I think this was as his singing suffered when he was trying to sing in Soma’s voice.

Ueda Kandai as Undertaker

I was honestly quite surprised how good Kandai was as Undertaker. I think his Undertaker voice got better as the show went on so I assume the reason it was less good at first was nerves. He wasn’t in it too much but I thoroughly enjoyed him in every scene he was in. I think I would love it if he learnt to sing in his Undertaker voice more but I also understand that is quite difficult so understand why he’s not doing that.

Sana Hiroki as Edgar Redmond

I thought he was very good as Edgar and carried the emotion needed for the more serious scenes, like the flashback about Derek, very well. He definitely emphasised the queerness of Edgar and had some rather flirtatious moments with Maurice and Joanne. However, despite being flirty and not seeming to be very serious, I completely bought it when he became serious and he played the shift very well (such as in the Maurice reveal scene). His singing voice is good.

Tazuru Shogo as Herman Greenhill

I thought Shogo was really good as Herman, even if it did feel like him playing a slightly nicer version of Sanada – his character from Prince of tennis. He was my 2nd fav of the four and I always enjoyed watching him in his scenes. He played the emotion in the Derek flashback amazingly and you could really see the pain in his eyes when he realised what he had done. His voice was really perfect for Herman.

Satonaka Masamichi as Lawrence Bluewer

I really loved Masa as Lawrence. I don’t know how accurate it is as he didn’t seem very sweet from what I read on his wiki page, but his Lawrence seemed quite tsundere. I loved his bit in the Cricket match when he was talking about wanting to win in his very last year. He also just seemed quite cute. I really enjoyed his singing.

Goto Dai as Gregory Violet

I LOVED Dai as Gregory. He definitely gave off the aura of being weird but he also seemed very sweet to Cheslock and the two actors had really good chemistry. He was really cute in his Cricket gear. He was by far my favourite of the prefects. Despite seeming cute and sweet to Cheslock he definitely retained the aura of mystery and you could never tell what he was thinking. His singing voice is pretty good but he didn’t have many solo bits.

Furuya Yamato as Clayton

While at the beginning I did get an intelligent stuck up vibe from Yamato as Clayton that kinda died away as the show went on and he became much more of a dork. I dunno how much of this is in character but to me it felt slightly like Yamato playing himself. As I think Yamato is an excellent actor, I was a little bit disappointed to see his character change quite a bit but I don’t know how much was him and how much was the direction. Since Yamato is known for comedy and his adlibbing I wouldn’t be surprised if this was actually just direction and the route they decided to go down for this character, hence why they scouted Yamato. I know his singing voice may not appeal to everyone, but I really like it.

Nakajima Takuto as Edward Midford

Takuto was very good as Edward and I think he played his straightforwardness quite well. I love Takuto but I don’t think Edward had much to do apart from the cricket which Takuto did very well. His singing voice is excellent.

Warning: Tsukasa is my favourite actor, and I am very biased

Taguchi Tsukasa as Maurice Cole

Tsukasa was AMAZING as Maurice. He played the changes in his character so well and even though he’s not a very nice person I felt really bad for him during his breakdown as Tsukasa’s scream was heart wrenching. When he was pretending, he felt so light and sweet and then when he was being his normal self he dropped down his voice and even changed his accent slightly as well as changing the way he would stand and walk. Ngl I was not paying too much attention to other people when he was in the scene and I don’t know if it’s just because I’m biased or because his command of the stage is that good but I really felt his stage presence. I loved the way he repeated 2 O’clock to Edgar and the others and how he mirrored the way he did it with Ciel and all the subtleties to his acting were great. He didn’t get to sing very much but he sounded really good.

Fukuzawa Yu as Cheslock

Apart from Tsukasa I think Yu was my favourite in this show. He brought so much energy to Cheslock and I don’t mean making the character energetic, just that he always has so much power and feeling behind his lines and he was so good and cool! He had good command of the stage and worked so well with Dai to be the one the stands out and the one that fades into the shadows. He mostly rapped so I don’t remember his singing voice very much.

Uchino Fuuto as Joanne Harcourt

Fuuto didn’t really stand out to me very much and I don’t think he had very much to do. His singing voice was pretty good.

Hayakawa Iori as Macmillan

He served his part in the story well and was very cute and energetic which I liked. He kinda reminded me of doll a little. His singing voice was pretty good.

Yamaguchi Kooki as Derek Arden

He wasn’t in very much of the show but he played his part very well and even though we got so little of him being unpleasant the way he played it made me hate Derek immediately. I don’t think he got any solo singing bits?

Takahashi Shunichi as Johann Agares

He filled his role very well. The most impressive thing was his falling from the stairs, I was very worried he was going to hurt himself, so I was really glad he was okay as he went from pretty high considering there were lower stairs. His singing voice was good.

Songs: I really love Yu(vague) the composer of the show and he is my favourite music composer. I think he did a really good job with the songs on the whole. I think he did well making them seem different and new yet familiar.

Opening song – 7/10

I think this song was a good opener. I wasn’t too sure about it at first, but it got better as the song went on. Toshi’s voice didn’t sound to be working with the song at first but since he sounded fine later, I think it was just his voice wavering at first from nerves so I’m excited to see what he’s like in the last show. I like how they did short recaps of the previous shows from Lycoris to Campania so the fans are caught up on what has happened, especially since it becomes important when Undertaker comes back with the dolls at the end.

2nd song, I think it’s called ‘It’s perfect black’ – 8/10

I really like this song. I think it is a nice scene setter and is very well sung by everyone. The dance works well and kinda brings Druitt’s dancing to mind with some of it. The song features the full cast and is effectively the Pawn and Sword song of this show.

Welcome to Weston song – 10/10

My first 10/10 song. I really love this song and I already can sing along to it. I love the prefects singing and that the others sing the chorus for them. (Also partly love it for its reprise but I’ll get to that later) I love how rigid and together it sounds. By that I mean that everyone is singing their lines as quite cutting and the harmonies are very crisp. Everyone is perfectly in time and there is no deviation. The rigidness shows the formality and tradition of the school which is reinforced by the students marching around the stage to get to the places. This is the case for everyone except the prefects who have more flowy lines and they walk a lot more freely showing the school’s hierarchy. I also love the prefects pushing Ciel around and surrounding him which foreshadows how he his treated.

Only Prefect Four – 9/10

I might be slightly biased as a Mankai stage fan as this song sounds so like a Mankai stage song but I love it so much. It would be 10/10 but I think their harmonies at the end could be a bit tighter. I think the soft and flowery and upbeat music works really well after the last song. Kinda indicating that the prefects live in a different world to the rest of the school which kinda serves as storytelling so that later when they’re so surprised by Derek’s actions it makes sense as they feel kinda separate from everyone else and it makes sense that they wouldn’t know what was going on in the rest of the school. I also love how they each get their solo bits which tell you stuff about the characters. Edgar’s dance is really reminiscent of Druitt which I really love. Herman’s music is a lot less flowy with a base note and the dance, using cricket bats, really gives off an image of strength. Lawrence’s mixes classical music into the instrumental and it has a more traditional feel. The dance involves a lot of stepping and stopping showing a formulaic approach rather than being flowy or strong. Gregory’s music has a grand feeling to it and it goes lower. Gregory doesn’t move much while Cheslock is doing some hip-hop dancing next to him. And instead of singing a solo section he talks about how he wants to go to bed.

Yes, my lord – 10/10

My favourite song in this show. It shows Ciel being told to do things and him passing his chores to Sebastian and Sebastian getting more and more annoyed with him, even breaking and calling him a brat at one point. The upbeat tone is quite fun and it works really well as a montage song. I like how it goes from Ciel saying ‘Yes, Clayton-senpai’ (senpai is a polite suffix for names of people who are higher up than you) to dropping senpai to just saying yes then turning to Sebastian. It really showcases brat Ciel.

Soma’s song – 10/10

His song is all about being Ciel’s friend and it’s really cute and energetic. The outfits from Soma’s song in Circus and brought back and it has a similar instrumental to his song there. He messes around a lot more in this song, though. Even though he is now much older than Sho was when he played Soma through this song he feels far more youthful through the more relaxed choreography and the energetic music.

Ominous prefect song – 9/10

This song is so cool. I really like the sharp shapes being projected onto the back with lilac light and the softly ominous instrumentals. (it comes right after Edgar mentions ‘the secret of what happened that day’). The vice-principal walking around at the back is really interesting as it looks like he is monitoring them. And the other students walking around with lanterns gives the song an almost supernatural feel. And then Undertaker peeking out from the back at the end gives a more direct hint of what is going on.

Nightmare, opening reprise – 8/10

This is just a reprise of the 1st song but I like it a bit better because it is shorter and the choreography of the cultists surrounding Ciel’s bed is really nice.

The Headmaster’s decision – 10/10

I like the fast pace of this song as Ciel runs around to ask about Derek and keeps just being told it was the headmaster’s decision. The students moving and singing together, then encircling him reinforces Ciel’s feeling like there’s a secret that everyone knows but isn’t telling him. I also like the use of Derek’s actor walking around the stage, always just beyond their sight from where they are.

Cricket song, last song of Act 1 – 6/10

This song is good it’s just not super enthralling. I think it’s probably the weakest pre-interval song out of the Kuromyus. At the beginning Sebastian and Ciel’s mics got really quiet for some reason and the instrumental was a bit louder than them. It’s a nice gentle and weirdly happy and hopeful instrumental which is a bit at odds with the past two ominous songs and I can’t decide if I like that or not. Also, I think the harmonies are a bit off so hopefully that will be better by the final performance. A lot of the singers sound like they have tension in their voices so I think they were all pretty anxious for this song. I do like the song and it might go up a bit if they can get the harmonies in the final show because they got almost none of them in this show. (The one that they did get sounded really good though)

INTERVAL

Cricket tournament – 9/10

While the previous song was also more upbeat than the ominous songs I don’t think it worked due to being directly afterwards, as the first song of Act 2 I quite like that’s it’s more energetic as it gets you hyped for the 2nd Act. This is the song that some Tenimyu, Prince of tennis musical, fans are saying was inspired by Tenimyu. And I will say, it was 100% inspired by Tenimyu XD. Yana-sensei is a fan of Prince of tennis and Shogo, Herman’s actor, was cast in a role very similar to his Prince of tennis role then the Green Lion section literally has lines that are exactly the same as lines from the team Shogo was in. Also, the music during their bit is actually somewhat reminiscent of the music that team normally has.

[Yu(vague) is so good at changing types of music during songs ahh, the Green Lion to Scarlett Fox transition is just so good.]

Honestly, this song would be a 7 or 8 out of 10 without the Violet Wolf part bc omg that part slaps so hard. Gregory and Cheslock high-five and the music just switches to electronic disco music and they rap most of their bit. I love it so much.

Sapphire Owl’s bit is cool too.

Scarlett vs Sapphire Cricket match – 6/10

It’s pretty good. Solid song but isn’t too exciting. Soma’s solo bit is really cute. Main thing letting it down is the ‘It’s cricket’ refrain that is in all three match songs. I was already done with it after like 30 seconds in this song and this song doesn’t have anything else lifting it above like the others do.

Violet vs Green Cricket match – 8/10

Cricket match as a rap battle. I dunno why Violet House became a rap house but I love it and I love Cheslock rapping about his awesome pitch. Then he and Herman having a rap battle is just so fun. I don’t know if this is as fun to Black Butler fans who know the characters a lot better or whether it would be uncomfortable but I had a blast in this song.

Sapphire vs Green Cricket match – 7/10

I really like the beginning instrumental and the short song bit at the very beginning of the song but the refrain hit again so it couldn’t go above a 7 for me.

Victory song – 6/10

Not a bad song but I don’t think the harmonies were there for this one and so I’m excited to see it in the last show again and hear if they improve.

Weston Reprise – 10/10

Oh my god I love this reprise so much. At first it sounds very like the original song then as the prefects slightly lose it as they realise what they have done it becomes more out of sync and the music quietens and it sounds more acapella and they sound slightly like they’re losing it due to the horror of what has happened. And the scratchiness of Gregory’s voice making it sound like he’s going to cry really reinforces that they are just children and they cannot deal with something like this.

Fight song – 7/10

I love the Undertaker taking Ciel to the side and staring at him crazily and singing at him. Again, I could hear Toshi’s nerves and I hope that he can sing the song better in the final show. I really love the Undertaker and Sebastian’s duet though and I think their voices sound really good together and I love the blood refrain in the song.

Finale song – 7/10

A pretty short but solid refrain of ‘It’s Perfect Black’

Direction: I thought the direction overall was pretty solid. There wasn’t anything really innovative attempted I don’t think but I didn’t really feel like there was anything lacking.

Overall: I really loved this show and look forward to seeing the final show and I think this show set up the new cast well for future shows.

Do I recommend buying the stream and DVD?

If you are a fan of 2.5D, any of these actors or Black Butler I really recommend trying to see this show. (The final show with be on 4th April on theatre-complex.jp and you can buy a ticket with just a vpn) While it is very different I feel like it was fairly faithful to its roots but is also trying to grow into something new.

Team Jacob

Written for @sterekweek-2020, Day 1: Scene stealer, and I have no excuse apart from a very sleep deprived mind and that one pic from Season 1 where Derek looks extra pale, you know the one! All sentences you recognise are obviously from Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight.

About three things Stiles was absolutely positive. 

First, Derek Hale was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him - and Stiles didn’t know how potent that part might be - that wanted to eat him. Though probably not in the fun way.

And third, Stiles was not going to be the Bella Swann of this scenario. 

Which is why he’s standing in the woods with said hungry vampire and quoting Bella Swann.

“I know what you are.”

As if to prove Stiles’ theory, Derek’s brow wrinkles artfully.

“You are impossibly fast and strong. Your skin is really pale, though I have no idea whether it’s cold or warm because there’s never been any good opportunity to ask to feel you up. I’ve never seen you eat or drink anything, though that evidence is inconclusive because I’ve pretty much only seen you in the woods or creeping around school, and you are definitely not seventeen, but then not everyone has to be bitten at seventeen, right? But anyways, I know what you are,” he ends triumphantly.

Derek looks - mostly constipated actually, but perhaps that’s just par for the course for vampires.

“What are you talking about?” he asks and Stiles rolls his eyes.

“I know what you are,” he repeats, and Derek finally returns to the script, at least mostly.

“Well, say it then.”

“You’re a vampire,” Stiles states proudly and is more than a little offended when Derek snorts loudly.

“What?!”

“You’re a vampire,” Stiles repeats himself again, glaring at Derek’s stupid, grinning face. He hadn’t even known the man could smile, never mind grin! He’d say it suits him, but it’s a grin at Stiles’ expense, so obviously it’s horrid. (It really, really isn’t.) Derek still doesn’t look convinced, so Stiles also repeats his list of hard, cold evidence (get it? Hard and cold - like a vampire!):

“You are super fast and strong, way too pale, live in a house - of sorts - in the woods, you are a terrible creeper around high schoolers, and I’ve definitely seen your eyes change colour, though I don’t know what colour blue represents - eats only fish? Are you a pescatarian vampire?”

“You think I’m a pescatarian vampire? When I don’t even sparkle?”

Stiles gasps and points excitedly:

“You’ve seen Twilight!!!”

And then Derek has the chuzpe to shake his head.

“No, I haven’t.” But then he smirks and adds: “I’ve read it.”

“That’s worse!” Stiles shakes his head. “Something’s obviously very wrong with you.”

“But at least I don’t sparkle,” Derek offers and Stiles sighs. 

“I knew something didn’t fit. But what are you then, and don’t even think about lying, because as I said, something is clearly very wrong with you, and it’s not just that you’ve read Twilight!”

“I’m not a vampire,” Derek starts and Stiles rolls his eyes. They’d certainly established that. 

“I’m a born werewolf.”

Stiles really should have seen that one coming.

“As if,” he scoffs and Derek frowns.

“No, for real, I’m a werewolf, look” he insists and Stiles yelps when Derek’s impressive eyebrows suddenly disappear, no, transform into sideburns? And then there’s the fangs, can’t forget those, and of course the blue eyes.

“So I guess blue eyes don’t mean pescatarian then, do they?” he asks and Derek shakes his head. For some reason such a human gesture looks extra weird with the decidedly superhuman face.

“You’re no Jacob, that’s for sure,” Stiles mutters and yelps again when Derek’s features transform back suddenly, revealing a frown.

“At least I’m not in love with you just because I will be in love with your child,” he snipes back and Stiles gapes at him.

“Shut up,” Derek grumbles and Stiles squawks.

“I didn’t even say anything!” he protests and then narrows his eyes as a thought occurs to him suddenly:

“You can’t hear my thoughts, can you? That was totally Edward’s thing, not Jacobs’!”

“No, but I can hear your heartbeat,” Derek replies and Stiles scrunches up his nose.

“That’s only mildly less creepy, thanks.” 

He chews on his lower lip for a moment and then comes to a decision.

“Okay, you are going to buy me a lot of curly fries and a big milkshake and then you are going to explain all of this properly - especially what’s wrong with Scott, I really need help there.”

To his surprise, Derek doesn’t even object, just turns and starts leading them out of the woods again. Stiles watches him walk away for a few seconds and then shrugs and follows him.

“I did always like Jacob better,” he mutters and ahead of him Derek stumbles over thin air.

"If Spencer does not come tomorrow I swear that I will make his life hell" said JJ leaving the room ready to sleep with a white T-shirt and long light blue pants "seriously, we will all be present to arrest him and nothing happens ”

“ I agree ”said Emily grabbing a few blankets for four o'clock; even though spring was approaching, the cold was still present in the city "I don't understand why it's like this"

"It's obvious !!!!" Penelope yelled, scaring everyone

“Oh come on! I know Spence doesn't like me "

Private Practice was a fantastic show, because it stood really well on its own, but gave us a great crossover episode every once in a while.

Cristina Yang: She stayed true to herself, seeking out opportunities to learn and grow as a surgeon in a state of the art cardiac research facility in Switzerland.She said her heartfelt goodbyes, before dancing it out with her ‘person’ one last time.

Preston Burke: He did ground-breaking work in Zurich. He mended fences with Cristina, before choosing to spend time with his loving family.

Nathan Riggs: He found happiness in Malibu with his long-lost fiancé and her beloved little boy.

Stephanie Edwards: She literally left Seattle in a blaze of glory, having saved that little girl’s life during the fire. I hope she is fully recovered, traveling the world like she wanted.

Erica Hahn: She stood by her principles, protesting Izzy’s theft of a donor heart for Denny. I hope she is out there somewhere, doing groundbreaking surgery alongside a lovely lesbian.

Callie Torres & Arizona Robbins: Arizona prioritised her daughter’s needs in moving cross country so she could be with her Mama in a show of successful co-parenting. Though Callie’s original exit (in pursuit of Penny) was regrettable, a simple text was enough to rekindle the Calzona flame.

Derek Shepherd: His death was untimely, but it allow Derek and Meredith’s eternal love to live on. He left his wife one final gift, in the form of their daughter, Ellis.

George O’Malley: His death was suddden and tragic, like many in the real world. Perhaps George was taken too soon. Perhaps it would have been more realistic if he died in the line of duty while serving in the military, but you can’t deny that his final elevator scene was iconic.

Reed Adamson & Charles Percy: Frankly, I never developed an attachment to either of these residents, who came to the hospital after Seattle Grace was merged with Mercy West. However, no matter who you are or what you’ve done, a mass shooting is not a nice way to go.

Leah Murphy & Shane Ross: Some crack under the pressure of surgical residency and some are home wreckers. It was lucky they weren’t killed off in a bid to appease outraged Crowen/Calzona fans.

Izzie Stevens: I think it might have been somewhat neater and/or more realistic if Izzie had died of cancer as originally planned. I started watching the series in Season 7, before eventually binging all previous episodes, so Katherine Heigl has never really had a special place in my heart. But I’m still glad she got to have kids, live happily on a farm in Kansas.

Heather Brooks: Electrocution was a horrible way to go, but at least she died while trying to save the beloved Richard Webber.

April Kepner: I’m a huge Japril fan, but no matter how you feel about April and Matthew as a couple, she deserves to be happy. It is some consolation that she is alive and well in Washington, so perhaps all hope is not lost for her and Avery.

Lexie Grey & Mark Sloane: Their death was terribly sad and anything but the happily ever after Slexie deserved. I’m forever bitter that Lexie didn’t just take a research year in New York. Sloane could have realised his true feelings and followed her there to propose. Eventually, they would both find permanent work and decide that NY was the best place to raise their kids. This would have made Callie’s decision to move to New York a lot more sensible for Sofia. It might have been tricky to manage Meredith’s relationship with Lexie off-screen, but why not, if they did so for her best friend? I’m sure the fans would have played along. Either way, the plane crash was a little far-fetched.

Alex Karev: I’m aware that the writers did not have a lot of time, but Justin’s exist storyline was quite poor. It’s not so much a question of why, but how. It’s understandable that Alex would want to be with his kids. Maybe there was a possibility that he would have fallen back in love with Izzie over time. But for him to ghost his wife for 6 weeks after they have only just renewed their vows? For him to explain himself in a letter containing divorce papers? To leave his best friend, his second family and the woman who has been left heartbroken by any family member she has ever known? That meant destroying 16 seasons worth of character development in one foul swoop. No, these are not the actions of Alex Karev. He should have invited Jo to Kansas to meet the kids. They would have tried to make it work, even as his love for Izzie grew. Then perhaps he would have been the one receiving a goodbye letter, as Jo set him free to be with his family before returning to Seattle. Later, Zola, Bailey and Emilia could visit the farm with Meredith, only to come back to the hospital, full of excitement at having made friends with Alexis and Eli.

I wish Justin every health and happiness in his future endeavours. It seems there is a lot going on behind-the-scenes. It can’t have been an easy decision to go, but sometimes you have to do what’s right for you.

Jack’s Story

So this is Jack’s Coming Out Story - I as a straight female have obviously never had to go through anything like this at all before so please read this and let me know if I’ve got anything wrong or if anything makes any of you uncomfortable and I’ll be more than happy to change it 

From the moment Jack had set eyes on him he had known he was fucked.

He had run into Robert in a cafe a little longer than a week into the term, the two of them having known each other as a result of Freshers week.

“Hey, Jack! How are you?” Robert beamed at the man. Jack adjusted his hat and took Robert’s hand with a smile.

“I’m good thanks, you?”

“Yeah, I’m good - I’m here with my roommate, have you met him?” Robert asked innocently.

“Don’t believe so, no,” Jack said with a shrug.

Robert stepped out of the way and Jack could have sworn he was in a shitty romance film with how everything else seemed to slow down just a little bit upon revealing the other man.

“Jack Twist,” he introduced, swallowing hard and offering his hand. The blond man nodded his head, taking the hand.

“Ennis Del Mar.”

Jack kind of wanted to hate the man from how he made his heart flutter just from one look. 

Jack had always known that he wasn’t like the other kids at home. The other boys, more like. But he came from such a conservative town from such old-fashioned parents that he knew there was no chance of him being able to come out back home.

It was part of the reason why he had been so eager to move out of state for university, to get away from the small town and the people with equally small minds.

Back home he had tried to hide his sexuality when people began to get suspicious through dating a girl. Lureen. She was a rider. 

Jack had broken up with her after a few months. Well, she had really broken up with him but he always said he was the reason for their split. Which, truthfully, he was. Lureen had cottoned on to the longing looks Jack would give to the other boys in their classes. She had him figured out.

Though she had swore not to tell, knowing that it was an important aspect of Jack’s life that he needed to sort out himself.

Lureen had also met Jack’s parents before and knew exactly what their reaction would be.

But the damage had been done and the rumours surrounding Jack’s sexuality had begun to die down.

Even without the whispers following him everywhere he still had to get away.

Jack took every step he could in avoiding Ennis.

Only lately, mind. The past few weeks. Before that, the two of them had been close. Ennis was a dark, brooding man who Robert declared could only be brought to laughter by Jack.

And Jack had been more than willing to keep him laughing.

A part of him had even, genuinely, begun to think that Ennis liked him back in the same way that he liked him.

As soon as he found out about Alma, though, he hated himself for the hope that left a bitter-taste in his mouth now.

“I thought Ennis was coming?” Jake asked, his arm wound around Y/N’s shoulder, holding her to his chest and he kissed her temple lovingly.

Jack hated the jealousy that boiled in his stomach at the sight of such gentle domesticity.

“He is - but I think he’s bringing his girlfriend.” Robert said from the other end of the table where him and Donnie were attempting to talk Lou into taking shots with them.

“His girlfriend?” Jack asked, snapping to attention. Jake and Y/N looked at him in surprise at his sudden question. 

Morf frowned just a little at him from his place next to Jerry. Morf’s arm was around his flavour of the week - a man called Ed that the rest of the group liked but Quentin wasn’t so sure about since he had thought Derek was just a really long, misshapen rat and had thought Quentin was playing a joke on him when he tried to explain that a ferret was a real animal, not something made up in Lord of the Rings.

Jack felt another surge of jealousy at that. That Morf was able to be exactly who he was around everyone else without feeling worried about being rejected.

Admittedly, Morf probably would have been the one to talk to about Ennis and Jack’s feelings for him. But there was no way that Jack was going to go through with that.

“Yeah - Alma, I think? He’s been seeing her for a month and a bit now? She’s really nice,” Robert confirmed.

Jack felt his heart drop.

For the two weeks since meeting Alma, Jack had done anything and everything that meant he could avoid seeing her or Ennis again.

“Jack, dude, talk to us, yeah?” Jake asked. Edward was stood right behind him, worry clearly written across his face as the two men watched the First Year university student cry on Jake’s doorstep.

“Come inside, Jack. We’ll make you some tea and you can talk to us about it?” Edward suggested. Jack wiped his eyes roughly with his sleeve and nodded.

“Sorry,” he rasped.

“Don’t even worry about it, dude. Go into the living room with Ed and I’ll make us all something to drink, yeah?”

Jack nodded and allowed Edward to lead him gently into Jake’s living room, one hand on his back to push him through.

Jake returned into the room five minutes later with five mugs of tea. Jack had taken off his hat and was running his hands through his hair, visibly stressed and beyond upset.

“I’m sorry to just barge in like this,” he finally said.

“Stop apologising, man. You know my place is basically just a refuge centre at this point,” Jake joked, raising his eyebrows at Edward. “I mean, Ed just comes over here whenever Jamie’s being too loud with a girl.” Jack breathed a shaky sigh.

“Where are the David’s?”

“They’re at astronomy society,” Jake said gently. 

“I - uh - I need to tell you two something,” Jack confessed, squeezing his eyes shut.

“Yeah?” Jake probed, leaning towards him a little.

“I - I’ve never told anyone this before,” he said with a wet laugh, sniffing his tears away. Edward placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

“Take your time, Jack,” Edward said and Jack nodded, taking another deep breath.

“I - uh - I... I like... I... I don’t... like girls,” Jack saw Jake and Edward exchange a look.

“Alright,” Edward said at last. Jack looked at him in surprise.

“Is that... is that it?” Jack asked. Jake chuckled, squeezing Jack’s shoulder.

“You’re still our friend, dude, if that’s what you’re worried about. You’re the same guy you’ve always been and... and nothing’s going to change that, especially not your sexuality,” Jack bit his lip, trying hard not to smile.

“You really mean that?”

“Of course we do,” Edward chuckled. He brought Jack into a short hug. “If you need any support though, Jack, you know where we are. We’ll help you however you need us to,” Jack nodded.

“Thanks,” he breathed. “Could you... maybe not tell the others yet?”

“We wouldn’t take that away from you,” Jake promised.

“You want my advice?” Morf asked, raising his eyebrows at Jack.

It had been a slow process but by two weeks after coming out for the first time, all of his closest friends knew he was gay.

Apart from Ennis.

Though Jack wasn’t exactly sure where they stood on the whole ‘friend thing’ anymore anyway. 

“Well... you’ve clearly told guys you like them before,” Jack pointed out and Morf chuckled, raising his chai latte to his lips.

“It’s the same as telling girls you like them,” Jack rolled his eyes.

“Funnily enough I haven’t done that either,” he pointed out.

“Who’s the guy?” Morf asked curiously. Jack dropped his gaze to the cafe table. “Is it Ennis?” Jack’s head snapped up and he looked around, wide eyed and worried.

“Keep your fucking voice down!” He hissed and Morf lent back with a smirk on his face.

“I knew it - I’ve known it since that night we met Alma,” he declared.

“Great. Congratu-fucking-lations. I’m so proud of you. Have a gold star,” Jack muttered.

“Ennis likes you too,” Morf said and Jack rolled his eyes.

“Thanks for the vote of confidence but he has a girlfriend. I’m hopeless but I’m not stupid,” Jack spat.

“Have you seen the way Ennis looks at you?” Morf asked gently. Jack looked up and shook his head, swallowing. “I have. You should talk to him. Or try to.” Silence fell over the friends and Jack mulled over Morf’s advice. “And if that fails then I know some great gay bars that no one else will come with me to.”

“Robert’s not in,” Ennis said, opening the door to his dorm room, visibly surprised to see Jack on the other side.

“I know. I was just with him.” Jack nodded. “I need to... I need to talk to you.”

“First time in a while,” Ennis pointed out with a wry smile but stepped back to allow Jack to enter into his room.

The only time Jack had ever seen Ennis without his hat was in his dorm room. He thought that it made him look softer, without the hat. A look Jack couldn’t deny he adored on Ennis.

Jack seated himself on Robert’s bed and Ennis sat on his own, opposite Jack.

Jack’s eyes scanned the room and his heart clenched when they landed on the photo of Alma Ennis had on his desk. He tore his eyes away and settled them back on Ennis, who was watching him expectantly.

“I have to tell you something,” Jack admitted.

“Yeah?”

“I... I’m gay,” coming out had gotten easier for Jack the more he had done it. And yet with the way his throat constricted with the words it felt like the first time all over again.

It was even worse waiting for Ennis’ reaction than it had been waiting for Jake and Edward’s.

He knew Ennis came from a town even more conservative than his own.

“Oh... right.” Ennis swallowed, avoiding making eye contact with Jack. “That’s... that’s fine.” 

Ennis looked like he was in physical pain as he spoke.

“That’s not all,” Jack admitted with a sigh. Ennis’ eyes widened, panic clear in them.

“That’s not it?”

“No... I’m sorry, Ennis,” Jack whispered. Hot tears built in his eyes.

He couldn’t do this.

But he had to.

“I just... I wanted to let you know that... that if I’ve been acting weird lately around you... around Alma.... it’s... I like you Ennis Del Mar.” 

“I’m not gay,” Ennis immediately snapped.

“I know... I just... had to tell you,” Jack’s voice was hoarse and he stood up. “I’ll... I’ll leave,” he decided, seeing Ennis’ stricken face.

Jack was down the hallway towards the stairs, tears threatening to fall when he heard footsteps behind him.

“Jack! Jack wait!” Jack turned at the sound of Ennis’ voice.

Growing up, life for Sebine Laurent had been anything but normal. Her parents had died at a young age, leaving her growing up as an orphan on the South Side. Early in her teen years, she fell in love with a young South Sider named Edward Anderson - the youngest son of the Serpents leader. The two were together for years, but despite this relationship when the Smythes came looking for a wife for their youngest son, Sebine ended things with Edward per her new in-laws demands; they shoved a hefty prenup in her direction demanding she not bring any scandal to the family name via her relationship with the South Side boy she had been involved with for so long, and she had begrudgingly accepted it in search of a better life.

Years passed without any contact between Edward and Sebine. She gave birth to two beautiful twins, Sebastian and Sebrina, and her life seemed perfect; her marriage was far from perfect, but she loved her family regardless. A chance encounter brought Edward and Sebine back into each other's lives, and the spark quickly reignited between the two of them. The Smythes knew what was going on between their daughter-in-law and her old flame, but they let it go. They had their picture-perfect family and their beautiful grandchildren. As far as everyone else was concerned, the Alexander and Sebine Smythe had the perfect family. Problems quickly arose, though, when Sebine fell pregnant, and it was clear that Alexander wasn't the father this time.

The family threatened to leave her completely desolate if she didn't end things with the Serpent once and for all, including giving the baby to the Sisters of Quiet Mercy once Sebine had given birth. They thought they had everything under control until Edward refused to be pushed out of Sebine's life for a second time. He had secret, grand plans to sweep Sebine away from her life in the North Side so they could run away to be together, but her in-laws intercepted. They gave Edward a counter-offer that was almost too hard to refuse. Sebine would never leave with him, but he could still have a piece of her; they offered to give him a substantial amount of money to get out of the gang-life that was expected of him in the South Side as well as to leave Riverdale with the baby and never return.

After trying and failing to convince Sebine to leave with him, Edward refused the Smythe’s offer at first, though instead of leaving town like they had asked, he simply took Cassie and left the North side. He returned to the familiarity of the South Side with his daughter, but instead of pledging his loyalty to the Serpents like he was expected to - like his older brother, Bruce, had done - he joined the Ghoulies alongside his best friend, Luca Gilbert. His brother was furious at this perceived betrayal, especially since Bruce had taken over the Serpents in the wake of their father’s passing in the years before. Knowing how angry Bruce was, Edward and Luca prepared for some sort of retaliation, but after weeks of quiet on the Serpents end it seemed as if it wasn’t going to come. In retrospect, Edward should have known better.

Time passed and a relative peace between the Serpents and the Ghoulies settled in. Weeks turned into months. Months into years. It was just long enough that Edward and Luca began to let their guard down, and that was all the chance that Bruce needed. He knew attacking Edward wouldn’t work - while Bruce was brutal and merciless, his brother was worse, and he knew Bruce’s few weaknesses. Hurting Edward himself wouldn’t work, and even he wouldn’t have touched his newborn niece, though he’d never admit that particular fact to anyone. Instead, Bruce turned his rage towards Luca and Derek Gilbert; Luca was Edward’s best friend, and he’d come to see Derek as a son himself. Hurting Edward by killing his family was the best kind of revenge Bruce could have come up with; he knew it would break his baby brother.

Two years of relative quiet between the gangs on the Southside passed, and then suddenly Luca and Derek went missing. Edward had searched for his family for a few days until he got the word from fellow Ghoulies that they’d found Luca’s body beside the river that runs through Fox Forest. He’d been beaten and clearly tortured to death, but they’d been unable to find Derek; from what they could tell, though, it seemed as if he had suffered the same fate as his father. From what he’d seen of the scene himself, Edward suspected that Bruce had dumped Derek’s body in the river as a means of torturing him even further. There would be no closure without the body, and Bruce knew Edward enough to know how much that would bother him.

Losing both Luca and Derek did exactly what Bruce thought it would have done: it broke Edward. When Bruce threatened to kill Cassie if Edward didn’t leave Riverdale behind him, Edward had no choice but to take his daughter and run. He didn’t stick around long enough to learn that police found Derek wandering through the woods alone days later. Instead, he went back to the Smythes. While they wouldn’t give him as much as they had initially offered, they still gave him a hefty amount of money when he threatened to make his affair with Sebine public knowledge. Taking the hush money that they gave him, Edward changed his last name and left the small town in his rear-view mirror with his daughter in tow. Moving them all the way across the country, Edward set out to put his past in the past and start over.

Cassie spent most of her early life in Port Townsend, Washington, a small maritime town located just north of Seattle, with absolutely no recollection of her early life in Riverdale. Edward wanted to get as far away from Riverdale as possible, and a small town located literally on the other side of the country seemed like the best option to him.

Six months after moving to Port Townsend, Edward met a woman named Athena working as an emergency room resident in the local hospital. He’d been working various protection details for important people around the city and had been stabbed while protecting someone. What started as innocent flirtation between Athena and Edward quickly blossomed into something more. She looked beyond the damaged and rough exterior to the broken man inside, and it was Athena who helped him begin to heal. She knew who he was and what kind of man he had been raised to be, and she loved him anyway. She treated and raised Cassie as her own, and she is the only mother that Cassie has ever known.

Shortly after Cassie’s ninth birthday, Athena took a job at a medical center in the South Side of Chicago, and before she knew it, Cassie’s life was being uprooted and moved back east. Edward took various jobs in an attempt to keep up the semi normal life he’d been living in Port Townsend, but eventually he fell back into the only life he’d ever known, working as an enforcer for a local mob group in the city. It was the only real talent he had, and while Athena didn’t necessarily approve of it she stood by the man’s side regardless as he fell back into the familiar role. As she grew older, Cassie began following in her father’s footsteps, though Edward’s way of life was the last thing either parent wanted for Cassie. With time, though, they came to realize that there was no stopping the young woman. Much like both of her parents, once she set her mind to something there was no way she was going to budge.

Shortly after graduating from high school, Cassie literally ran into the man of her dreams. Anthony had stopped by a local diner for lunch; the same diner that Cassie was working part-time in. She had been in a hurry and not fully paying attention and slammed right into the taller man as he went to take a seat at one of the booths; luckily, his reflexes were amazing, and strong arms caught her before she could stumble backwards. He was only home on leave for a few weeks, but it only took a few short weeks for Cassie to fall head over heels in love with the Marine. Their relationship took off faster than most, but even to those around them it was as if they’d been together for years.

Cassie and Anthony were together for six months before he asked her to marry him. Her parents weren’t exactly thrilled at just how quickly the two had gotten to that point - it was one thing to approve of it, quite another to be okay with your daughter getting engaged after such a short time - but they didn’t object to it. Both Edward and Athena agreed that Anthony and Cassie were good for each other; the fact that he was going to be serving an entire deployment before they actually got married also helped Edward accept their engagement a little easier.

Tragedy struck their small family, though, when a notification party showed up on Cassie’s doorstep one morning to inform her that Anthony had officially been declared as Missing in Action, and Cassie and her family were listed as his only next of kin. Given the fact that he was a member of a Delta Force team, there wasn’t a lot that they could tell her about his disappearance, but they were certain that he had been gone missing during one of their missions. He had been presumed dead, but they hadn’t found a body so they couldn’t officially declare him Killed in Action yet. Cassie was torn apart at this news, but Edward and Athena were there to help her pick up the pieces. Even still, she hasn’t dated anyone since; there’s a part of her that hopes Anthony will show up on her doorstep one day.

Despite helping her father whenever she could, Cassie still had her own life as well. She had her own passions and interests outside of following in her father’s footsteps. Cassie had always been a curious nature, and after spending years of helping people on the South Side (of Chicago) with their own problems she decided to make a career out of it. Cassie enrolled in a local college to study criminal justice, though she dropped out just a few credits shy of graduating when another tragedy struck her family once more.

Throughout his years as an enforcer, Edward had made more than a few enemies. He never worried about it until the day that one of those enemies came after his family. Athena had been waiting outside of a local, family-owned restaurant for Edward and Cassie to meet her there for a family night out - a tradition they had started when she began college - when she was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting; Edward and Cassie had arrived moments later, and Cassie’s world began to come crashing down around her. Athena bled out in Edward’s arms while Cassie watched horrified from the sidelines.

In the months that followed, Cassie’s life was turned upside down. Not only had she lost the only mother she’d ever known, but she uncovered a truth she’d never thought possible. Edward had never hidden the fact that Athena wasn’t Cassie’s biological mother, but he had always told her that the woman who’d given birth to her had died in childbirth. Cassie had always believed him - she’d never had reason to doubt him - until the day she stumbled across letters between Sebine and Edward. She hadn’t thought anything of them at first, many of them were from when they were teenagers and before she was born, but then - as she continued to read - she realized that they continued for nearly a year after she was born. Letters in which Edward spoke about how he still loved her, but he understood her decision to stay with the Smythes, and he would continue to send her photos of Cassie as she grew. Not only had Edward lied about her mother’s death, but he’d kept an entire family from her for years.

In her anger, and after doing months worth of research on her mother and the woman’s family, Cassie left Chicago without a word to her father. She wasn’t sure exactly what she was looking for in Riverdale or from Sebine, but she knew she had to see the woman in person.

Victor Reyna (10-3, 32 years old, Pro since 2012) vs Miguel Baeza (6-0, 26 years old, Pro since 2015) Welterweights

Victor Reyna Where He Fight At? Like a lot of dudes from Texas, Reyna has pretty much stuck to that region of the United States. He fought a few times in Legacy Fighting Championship and has been primarily fighting for Combates Americas as they've undergone a bit of a growth spurt since 2017. Who’d He Ever Beat? Evan Cutts has some MMA name panache I suppose. Cutts was a part of Bellator's attempt to make a TUF and he's also known as the dude who ended Reagan Penn's brief pro MMA career. He also has a win over Daniel Rodriguez; a then undefeated fighter who has an 8-1 record and a few Bellator appearances. He's even got a key loss on his resume vs Kevin Holland. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? Reyna's fought A LOT of guys who fight quite a bit and so his record of opposition is 80-40. That's pretty damn solid! TUF veteran Marc Stevens was 20-10 when they fought (also Reyna's last loss) as well as 4-0 Kevin Holland, 6-2 Evan Cutts and 6-1 Andrew Parker. Reyna's last fight was against 16-10 Heyward Charles. Why Is He Here? Well he's the beneficiary of an injury!  Fortis MMA's Ramiz Brahimaj got hurt and on 10 days notice, Victor Reyna gets the call up. Reyna has bounced between 170 and 185 lbs a lot in his career so I'm a touch concerned about the chances he makes weight on short notice (although on some of these fights, he weighed as low as 174 lbs). Reyna is here because they needed a Contenders Series main event and he was available. About it. This doesn't mean he CAN'T  get a deal! It just feels more like a case of needing a guy on short notice and having the right number to the right matchmaker or so on so so forth. Reyna's interesting in that he kind of embodies the prototypical MMA prospect tester on the regional scene.

Miguel Baeza Where He Fight At? Florida and only Florida. Places like Fight Time and Titan FC adorn the short resume of Mr. Baeza. Who’d He Ever Beat? Nobody of note! At 6-0 and fighting primarily out of Florida, Miguel's pretty limited in his opposition. The most interesting/insightful factoid is that he holds wins over a pair of brothers in Florida (Gus and Mike D'Angelo). Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 14-10 is the record of Baeza's six opponents at the time of their fights. Gus D'Angelo was 2-2 and Mike D'Angelo was 3-2 when they fought. 5-2 Leo Valdivia is probably his best record opponent who he beat by split decision. Why Is He Here? Baeza was originally supposed to face Fortis MMA's Ramiz Brahimaj in what feels like one of those DWCS fights that's name prospect from region A vs name prospect from region B and whomever wins gets a contract a la Austin Tweedy vs Te Edwards. Baeza has limited footage out there on the interwebs but from what I've seen; he fits the Contender Series model. He's an athlete young guy who seems to hit really hard or at least hard enough to overcome his sometimes apparent flaws. He also fights with an air of composure about him and being composed and knocking people out gets Dana White excited.

Alton Cunningham (7-1, 26 years old, Pro since 2017) vs Tony Johnson (7-2, 32 years old, Pro since 2007) Light Heavyweights

Alton Cunningham Where He Fight At? Alton Cunningham is a former DWCS guy! He fought last season vs Bevon Lewis. Beyond that? Cunningham has a few LFA cameos and a Pure FC spot or two (a developing little regional promotion in Wisconsin). Who’d He Ever Beat? Nobody of note. Cunningham's toughest opponent was the aforementioned Bevon Lewis who he was finished by in the first round. He's beaten a few fighters with winning records but nobody you've heard of beyond that. The most interesting bit of Cunningham's record is that his last four fights have been at LHW, MW and HW. Dude's been all over the damn map so far. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 54-39-3. Is that good? Bad? I'm kind of not even entirely sure. The undefeated Bevon Lewis at 5-0, 16-27 BJ Lacy and 4-1 Eric Murray Jr in his last fight at LFA are pretty much his best opposition. Why Is He Here? Well there are a few things I suppose. For starters, he's an under 30 guy at 205 lbs. That on its own gives him a secondary chance at the Contenders Series. Most of the guys who get second shots on the Contenders Series are fellas who fight at the bigger weight classes because need trumps value sometimes. Cunningham's also a pretty solid regional prospect at LHW which adds to his value. He's also, when he's on, a really good action fighter. Alton Cunningham struggled with the power of Bevon Lewis which is horrifying since Lewis is a natural 185-er and Cunningham is a big dude 205 lber but all sins can be forgiven I suppose. They literally found a dude who fought twice since 2015 to fight him in hopes he'd get a win. Cunningham is here because there just aren't a bunch of dudes like him here.

Tony Johnson Where He Fight At? Tony Johnson has been boxing and doing BKB stuff more than he has been doing any sort of MMA. Case in point, Johnson has STRIKEFORCE (and not the version of it most of us are familiar with) on it. The headliner for the Stikeforce card he fought on? Babalu Sobral vs Bobby Southworth. He did fight on a Bellator card in 2018. Who’d He Ever Beat? Justin Baseman in 2013 (!!!) is a pretty quality win from a regional perspective. Johnson also fought Clifford Starks and lost back in 2011. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 31-25. His two losses are a combined 12-2 which means his victories are 19-23. Not a very pretty record. Why Is He Here? I'm not entirely sure? I hate to be negative when it comes to stuff like this but Tony Johnson is 36 years old, has fought infrequently since 2007 and has more highlights of his exploits in boxing than he does in MMA. I cannot believe anything other than "Tony Johnson is just here to get finished by Alton Cunningham so Alton gets a deal." Fine if so but this still feels awfully transparent. Maybe I'm wrong though and Tony Johnson is here to pull off an upset. He's a guy who has fought for over 10 years in various sports and Cunningham was rocked and hurt by a MW.

Zach Zane (12-7, 29 years old, Pro since 2015) vs Justin Gonzales (9-1, 28 years old, Pro since 2016) Featherweights

Zach Zane Where He Fight At? ALASKA FIGHTING CHAMPIONSHIP, BABY. I'll never not be amused when somebody from AFC winds up on a UFC platform. Zane's fought primarily in Hawaii, California and other Northwestern states but has reinvented himself fighting dudes down in Alaska. Who’d He Ever Beat? Decky Dalton is probably the best win to report; an Irish dude who fought primarily out of BAMMA. Zane's got some reputable losses though! Former DWCS fighter Joey Gomez (lost a split decision to Kevin Aguilar), former UFC fighter Chris Avila (the Diaz Bros training partner dude) and undefeated AFC fighter Nick Novelli are some of his seven losses. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 56-36 would be the record of opposition at the time Zach Zane's opponents fought him. Zane is currently riding an eight fight winning streak and of those wins, his opponents were a combined 16-10. So if you want to get even MORE math-y, you remove the eight fight winning streak with the opponents at 16-10 and focus just on his 4-7 record prior to the winning streak and his strength of competition THEN was 40-26. Why Is He Here? On paper a dude with a 12-7 record who is about to hit 30 isn't exactly DWCS worthy. Dig deeper though and you're talking about a guy who has an 8 fight winning streak with all 8 fights coming by way of some form of stoppage. Kane has also been fighting across four different weight classes across 145, 150 at a catchweight, 155 and a short notice call up for 170 lbs. If the big goal of the Contenders Series is to collect raw athletic dudes with upside then I'd argue it's secondary hits should be experienced dudes fighting out of nowhere who are lost in the cracks. He also has sort of fixed his career while spending more time at Blackhouse MMA. He also just sort of looks like the kind of guy who the Contenders Series would look; a reckless striker who attacks subs consistently in grappling situations. Also of note is One FC signed him and was going to use him but he fell out on them at the last minute and I guess they just axed that deal right away.

Justin Gonzales Where He Fight At? Justin Gonzales has fought out of one place every single time. He's fought at SCL; a promotion that's held over 70 events in Colorado. Big fan of the name Sparta Combat League. Who’d He Ever Beat? The resume is actually pretty damn good for regional MMA. Gonzales has wins over then undefeated Derek Brenon (who was making some noise with CFFC and LFA), 8-1 Bruno Ferreia and Combates veteran and then undefeated Enrique Gonazles. Throw in regional veteran Drew Brookenshire at 18-8 and there's damn good competition here. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 54-15 is what Justin Gonzales has faced in his undefeated career. Again among those were 18-8 Drew Brookenshire, 6-0 Derek Brennon and 3-0 Enrique Gonazales. His last fight out with a win over 8-1 Bruno Ferreira. Why Is He Here? He's the kind of guy who should be here. Justin Gonzales is an undefeated high level wrestler who has finishing chops on the feet and on the ground. He fights at a weight class of power where the top talent really does shine through. He's here because if you made a show LIKE this, you'd want a guy LIKE this on it. Gonzales IMO is the one dude who is a near lock to get signed if he wins.

Michael Lombardo (8-1, 29 years old, pro since 2016) vs Kyle Daukaus (6-0, 26 years old, pro since 2017) Middleweights

Michael Lombardo Where He Fight At? An ATT guy and a Florida native, I suppose it's no surprise Lombardo fights primarily in Florida and Louisiana. He made a few appearances in Titan FC and also pinch hit at a Bellator card too. Not the world's worst places to ply your craft. Who’d He Ever Beat? A whole lot of fluff. There's nobody here you'd know of but who he could've fought (Punahele Soriano) is the most interesting bit of the resume. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 25-25-1. Lombardo's strength of schedule is not exactly his strong suit and that kind of record speaks to it. His best opponent is 6-3 David Mundell who he lost to decision against. Why Is He Here? Gym, record and weight class! Lombardo is an under 30 middleweight as the division is undergoing a bit of a renaissance in the UFC. He trains with ATT and so you know the good word has probably been put in a time or two. He's 8-1 and comes into this fight with five straight wins and four of those before the final bell. Lombardo's got some fights out there on youtube and he doesn't really strike me as anything but a middleweight-y type fighter. He's big on takedowns, he clinches a lot, he's a brawler in space and he tends to fight in spurts. He's not a bad fighter and we've seen middleweights find homes  in the UFC before and stick around with that kind of style. Just not sure if THAT gets him signed.

Kyle Daukaus Where He Fight At? CFFC and ROC! Those are really good regional promotions on the East Coast. Who’d He Ever Beat? Daukaus enters the UFC with pretty much much the best win of any Contenders Series guy so far; Jonavin Webb. Webb is a former UFC flame out but a pretty high level East Coast fighter well worthy of starring off on a resume. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 27-12 is the record of opposition for Kyle Daukaus. The fact that Webb was 12-2 when they fought means that his opposition outside of the toughest fight of his career is a not too pretty 15-10. Still not entirely awful. Why Is He Here? Beating a UFC veteran can/should always make you somebody of note to promoters and matchmakers. Jonavin Webb is a super reputable high level win worthy of flexing about. The fact that he's a fight finisher who hasn't seen the judges in his career and fights at 185 lbs makes him all the more intriguing.

Richie Santiago (7-1, 26 years old, Pro since 2016) vs Miles Johns (8-0, 25 years old, Pro since 2014) Bantamweights

Richie Santiago Where He Fight At? CES MMA. The former home of BATISTA has become a pretty reputable East Coast regional organization that's churned out Contenders Series guys and  quality fighters. Who’d He Ever Beat? NOBODY! I guess his best win is Billy Giovanella who had a few Bellator appearances in 2015. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 31-32-2. His record of opposition is not exactly going to get mounted on anybody's wall. It's somewhat skewered by a very rough opening to his career (his first four opponents were a combined 8-17). His pro loss was to a 3-2 fighter. It also was last year so it's like it happened in the deep past. Why Is He Here? Well for starters, watching Santiago suggests that he's not a bad fighter and the sort of dude the UFC SHOULD have an eye on. Maybe it's the face and the bald-ish head but dude reminds me a lot of Eddie Alvarez from an offensive standpoint. I've seen him hurt, rocked and then rally back with some surprisingly crisp striking. His big performance is an LFA fight where he got hurt a bunch, wobbled a few times, landed a big knee and then scored a RNC sub almost within the blink of an eye. He also is a part time flyweight as well which sort of gives him a leg up if that division is going to stick around.

Miles Johns

Where He Fight At? LFA mostly. He's the current LFA bantamweight champion to be exact. Who’d He Ever Beat? A lot of really great fighters on the regional circuit. Wins over Levi Mowles, Adrian Yanez and Caio Machado may not be super big wins or the kind of stuff that gets you shuttled up to the UFC but they're impressive enough that his DWCS spot almost feels a little unncessary. Win an LFA belt and you get into the UFC; thems the rules. Record Of Opposition At The Time Of Their Fight? 40-12 would be the record of opposition for Miles Johns. Wins over 11-3 Caio Machado, 7-2 Adrian Yanez and 6-2 Levi Mowles stand out big time.   Why Is He Here? I mean the Contenders Series really should be based around THESE sorts of fights. Two guys with pretty records on paper, both big deals of their respective universes, fighting for a contract. Johns is clearly ahead of the curve though vs Santiago. Primarily or namely speaking, Johns trains with an elite gym (Fortis MMA is DWCS royalty at this point), he fights with the bigger org and he's fought the better competition. He also has the sort of style I can see Dana liking a lot. He's here because he belongs here.

I'm working on a HP fanfic and I'm wondering what would be Petunia and Lily parents names? I've looked it up and it's something that JK Rowling hasn't mentioned. What would you suggest for their names? Or what sources can help me figure it out?

Unlike the Potter family J.K. Rowling hasn’t given us much on the Evans family. What we do know of them is that Mrs. Evans and her husband lived in Cokeworth, England. The couple had two daughters: Petunia, born in the late 1950s, and Lily, born on January 30 in 1960. And that they also died from natural causes before Harry and Dudley were born. It’s quite plot-convenient for both grandparents to be out of the picture.

Anyway, we can guessed that Mr. and Mrs. Evans were born around the 1930s (possibly 1935)? As that would put them somewhere in their early to late 20s when they had Petunia and then a few years later (possibly 2-3 years) they had Lily. So now we have a year range, but we need an location to narrow things down.

Unfortunately Cokeworth is a fictional town in the midlands of England, Great Britain. You won’t be able to get an accurate list of names that were popular during that time period without an actual location. If it was a real place you could have looked for specific sources such as birth certificates, census statistics, yearbooks, etc. Keep in mind that not every information is easy to find or available online for everyone to access. However, that does not matter as you’re not writing a research paper or a nonfiction novel. So all you need is a general idea of what were the popular names during 1930s.

Office for National Statistics (ONS) is a good place to look for names given to babies by local authority within England and Wales. If you were looking for popular baby names in America, Social Security Administration (SSA) would be helpful as they allow you to select the decade and state. What I did come across is…

There’s also a theory or fanon that you might want to consider. It’s that on Mrs. Evans side of the family they have a tradition of naming their children (possibly just the girls) after plants, specifically flowers. Which is why most people believe Mrs. Evans would have had a flower name. And if she had any other children besides Petunia and Lily they too would have been given a flower name. 

It’s also possible that if Petunia or Lily had any daughters they would’ve continued on with the flower name tradition. Such as Harry Potter might’ve been known as Heather Potter instead? Or Holly Potter? Don’t want a flower name starting with the letter ‘H’? Maybe something like Rose Potter? Or if Harry Potter had a sister then she would’ve had a flower name.

It isn’t too far fetch to believe because J.K. Rowling did give the pure-blood Black family a penchant for astronomical names. Besides, in the late 19th century, floral names were extremely popular in the UK. That may be where the flower name tradition began for Mrs. Evan’s side of the family (if you choose to go with this theory). And from what I can see of popular baby names during 1934 in the list above, some flower names are included. So it would be quite possible for Mrs. Evans to have one of them for her name. o   This is the angsty fucked up version of a forced bonding fic. But I’m trash, so I love it.

o   When Jim is attacked by a telepathic species, Spock bonds with him to save his life.

o   A classic forced bonding to save your life fic. Focuses on the discomfort of the sudden intimacy and how that brings them together.

o   "You had no idea that it was going to work!" Stiles throws his hands up. Derek says, "You reeked of me," which is unfair.  Stiles only smelled because he'd gotten covered in Derek's bodily fluids trying to staunch the bleeding.

o   (Reluctant!Soulmate AU) An unexpected bond forms between Tony Stark and one of his greatest enemies. But not everything before is forgotten, or forgiven.

o   This relishes in the awkwardness of forced intimacy as Tony has no understanding or patience for the bond. It’s laid out as a series, but really this should have been chapters of one fic.

o   In an AU to Changes, Harry sold himself to John Marcone instead of Mab. They both take a while to adjust to this. Written for the Kinkmeme, for a prompt requesting both serious treatment of the issues and smut. Contains non-explicit reference to past child abuse and rape.

o   I love this fic so much. It has perfect pacing and character development. The love and growing trust between the characters is so obvious and yet understated.

·       A Shove Towards Love  by General_Button (Voltron, Teen, 31K, 2016)

o   A simple rescue mission turns into chaos when the species on the planet Novaria take an interest in the lives of two of its paladins.

o   [Klance, meddling aliens, aliens made them do it, but there’s no smut, bickering, pining, mind meld, forced proximity, soul bond]

o   This is great example of the trope. Keith and Lance are somehow both pining and acting like they can’t stand each other at the same time, and you just want to smack them, until you don’t.

·       ♥  Debt of Honor by Brianna Falken (Star Trek, NC-17, 33K, 2009)

o   Six months after being taken prisoner and raped by a Vulcan captain, Kirk finds that same Vulcan is now being assigned as his first officer when peace between Vulcan and Earth is declared. Originally published in the print fanzine Beyond Dreams 7 (2004)

o   This starts with a pretty graphic rape scene so please take care of yourself, but if that isn't your trigger or you can get past the non-con, this is a lovely story about forgiveness and healing. It’s actually one of my favorite star trek fics, something about the characterization both breaks my heart and gives me all the feelz. Literally the definition of a fandom classic since it came out of a fanzine.

·       Defendere by Lomonaaeren (Harry Potter, Mature, 37K, 2012)

o   When Harry stumbles into a magical ritual meant to enslave Draco, he manages to create a bond that leaves Draco with some free will. And the ability to irritate Harry in the name of "guarding" him.

o   [Drarry, forced soul bond, dub con, lots of consent issues, free will issues, slow build, pining, UST, angst, forced intimacy]

o   This one felt weird because of all the consent issues, but it does deep dive into the forced bonding and intimacy, and it’s well written. I’m just not sure I think this relationship is actually healthy, but it’s fanfic so, ehhh. The author does address the consent issues, don’t get me wrong, I just couldn’t 100% believe that they were solved.

·       Unexpected Consequences by lauren3210 (Harry Potter, Explicit, 39K, 2015)

o   Harry was going back to school. He was going to play Quidditch, sleep in lessons, hang out with his friends, and generally just enjoy being a kid for a change. And he was also going to do it while being bonded with Malfoy, because apparently life was just going to continue throwing curveballs at him. Harry didn't know why he expected anything different.

o   Draco is completely in Harry’s power and must learn to trust his jailor. It’s very good. One of those classic Drarry fics IMO. It’s what Defendere could have been.

o   When Stiles's best friend Scott presented as a werewolf, it was just the worst. Worst by far was that it meant Scott had to leave immediately to live with the werewolf pack in the mountains -- which no one knew anything about. Stiles couldn't even visit, so he only got to see Scott once a month when he came back to visit his mom. It sucked. A year later, he presents too.

o   As you can tell from my tags, this fic has precious and wonderful world building. I absolutely adored it. It’s everything you could want from werewolves. It’s also well plotted and fun as hell.

·       Rare Merchandise by CateAdams (Star Trek, Explicit, 120K, 2015)

o   Jim and Spock are kidnapped by Orion slavers during a diplomatic mission, transported to a location outside of Federation space and sold to a mysterious woman who commands an entire world. Once there, they are forced to participate in her terrifying agenda: their friendship used against them and their strength brutally tested. Can they survive and escape, or will they be used to bring down the Federation itself?

o   [For want of a nail, angst, action, Non-con elements, character torture, forced bonding, mind meld shenanigans.]

o   This is a very action oriented fic that will keep you reading late just make sure everyone lives through it. It has some mind rape elements though, so be careful there.

·       ♥♥  other things the road to hell is paved with by LuciaZephyr (Dresden Files, Explicit, 138K, 2011)

o   Book One of the Matter of Chicago series. Diverges from the canon plotline from Fool Moon, chapter 23, running on the idea of Marcone not holding the Idiot Ball and thus getting Harry to sign his contract. Very slow burn romance. Essentially an AU take of the entire series.

o   This is one of those perfect fics. I don’t know what else to say; look up a summary of the Dresden Files and then read this if you haven’t read the books. It’s better than the source material. The bond is more an oath of fealty/obedience than the more traditional telepathy or empathy version.

·       Human is Just a Word by lady emebalia (emebalia) (Teen Wolf, Explicit, 173K, 2017)

o   Getting claimed by a werewolf has so not been on Stiles' agenda for the night. But at least he can choose whose human pet he's going to be. That's a plus, right?

o   This has a lot of similar qualities to Present, so if you liked that, then you’ll probably like this too. It has a different concept of the intimacy of wolves and enough drama/tension to burst a blood vessel.

o   Yet another one of those Harry and Draco Are Forced To Be Together By Something Beyond Their Control And Then Stuff Happens Leading To Twoo Wuv stories.

o   This is the OG best of the best of Drarry bonding fics. If you haven’t read it and you like either Drarry or the bonding trope, then what even are you?

·       ♥♥ The Saffron Soul by BeautifulFiction_FMA (Fullmetal Alchemist, Explicit, 267K, 2010)

o   When a serial killer blurs the lines of alchemy in an effort to seal two souls together, Ed finds himself under suspicion from the police. Can he prove he is innocent, or are he & Roy doomed to suffer the consequences of the killer's ideals?

o   This is one of my favorite fics of all time. I’ve reread it countless times. The characterization is amazing, the plot engaging, and the writing wonderful. All of her FMA works are great but this is the masterpiece.
