lemme tell you im starting to get a little sick of when im complaining about when a show or movie is writing a major female character with not as much depth as her male cohorts or she's written oddly plot device-like for a main character and people always tell me "oh but it's intentional, we're seeing her through the eyes of the male main character and he has a crush on her so he doesnt see her flaws" because like
FIRST of all yeah i get it but its hard to write that trope interestingly to me at this point without a lot of work put into subversion so intentionality doesnt make it any less boring
SECONDLY half the time people say this about ensemble cast stuff and like why is the random dude suddenly designated as the most perspective of all perspective characters when it comes to this specific woman. why dont we get to see the other characters perspectives on her too?
AND THIRDLY do people view women they have crushes on as bland plot devices without lives of their own enough irl that this is so universal in writing? isnt the point of having a crush wanting to hang out and know more about your crush, know about their likes and dislikes and all that. am i missing something here

would love to hear more about Harris's Totally Excellent Amateur Theatricals
this is another collaboration with @sailorpants — a story in which, during the parts of war that are mostly Waiting, the Chosen Men attempt a presentation of a New-Written Obscure Pastoral Romance, and one that's the product of the clever mind of their very own Rifleman Harris, to boot!
“It’s a play, Mr. Sharpe, sir.” Sharpe cocked his head to one side, looking perplexed at the idea. Harris bit his lip — perhaps Sharpe didn’t approve of such things? He had never seemed averse to their nights of drunken revelry before, and didn’t seem to have any particular affection for religion, but Harris knew he certainly hadn’t any idea of where the major’s currently-unplumbed depths of opinion might reach.
“Well, what play is it, then, Harris?” said Sharpe at last, with a sort of confused interest. He reached out a hand to Perkins, who had clutched his part of the script tightly against his chest, and drew out a page from the crumpled pile, pinching it gingerly between finger and thumb.
“I’ve been writing it myself, sir.”
but what with the acting skill of those in question, plus enthusiasm, drunkenness, and whatever props and costumes can be cobbled together from the spare bits of army camp supplies...
Harris shoved a large, squashy package into his arms, which Perkins grabbed onto rather than let fall into the mud.
“Is this a pillow?”
“No, it’s a sheep.” Perkins turned the pillow over, noting the fact that four short sticks had been roughly tied onto it at the corners, and a rather smudgy attempt at a face had been drawn on one end with a bit of charcoal.
“Doesn’t look much like a sheep,” said Hagman, poking it. One of the sticks fell off, and Harris caught it, looking deeply offended.
“You’re s’posed to imagine it’s a sheep, Dan, it’s part of the theatrical art,” declared Cooper, carefully leaning on each syllable.
...well, it'll certainly be Something!

Hi! I'm looking to explore more punk artists who write about disability (of any kind really) and/or chronic illness, would you happen to have any recommendations for that? Thanks!
hi! i didn't have a concrete list, really, so i did a bit of digging and here's a couple albums & blurbs! it's not actually very punk-centric (more experimental than anything) my apologies. i haven't listened to all of these fully, but the stuff that i've heard has been lovely!
grim bitch/sick shit — collander: experimental/electronic bedroom pop. "a peek into a few weeks of low-spoons electronic production, demo tracks demo bodies." alli yates, the singer behind collander, is also "member of Sins Invalid, a performance collective for artists with disabilities, and is a prominent disability rights activist within Oakland’s underground scene" (bandcamp daily)
187bpm_demo — wheelchair sports camp: experimental funk/hip-hop. "We would like to offer this song of rage, anger, and grief to the ongoing fight for liberation. For those on the frontlines of today's uprising and for the generations of movements before that paved the way, taught us how, and who gave their all for us to be here." i found them through kr/p-hop nation's network, whose website is sadly defunct but the founder's twitter (leroy f moore jr) is still up!
sicko — beast nest: experimental/electronic noise. "And when I personally think about liberation, I think about what it means to get to a place where you are able to be present and really live with that presence. I think about what oppression functions as, what abolition is about, what disability justice is about" (bandcamp daily). sharmi basu (of beast nest!) is one of the people behind ratskin records, a label based in oakland, ca dedicated to "decolonial experimental music centered in the Bay Area and beyond". i've heard some of beast nest's stuff before and it is stellar, definitely recommend if ur interested in brown noise.
the runner — boy harsher: coldwave/drone. "Last year, in the midst of the obvious chaos, but additionally with Matthews’ MS diagnosis, Muller started working on moody, cinematic sketches. It was uncertain what these pieces would become other than catharsis — the duo were unable to tour and making “club music” did not feel right." this one i had saved from a rec post i'd seen somewhere on here, but i hadn't had a chance to listen till now. this is the soundtrack to their short horror film of the same name!
split 12 — chronic anxiety / dialer: post-punk noise/harsh electronic punk. "the album is six slices of pure post punk-noise rock wrapped in a silk swaddle of self-assertion and anxiety." this one's actually a vinyl split between 2 bands but i figured it would be a fun add! this one's a joint release between Bunny Cat Records (Great Weights, Love Club, Impressionist) and SRA Records (FOD, Dead Milkmen, HIRS, Psychic Teens) and their noise is so so cool.

the enigma of heaven and other daily delusions — heaven pierce her: electronic/experimental breakcore. "An exploration of christianity, mundane divinity and paranoid schizophrenia in the information age." i'm originally familiar with hakita's work via ultrakill, but this album actually means so much to me for a lot of different reasons. shan't get into it here, hope you enjoy it.
the flesh of the world — uboa: dark ambient/harsh noise. "These four songs were done under quarantine and are about bodies, body dysmorphia and the schizophrenic dissolution of the boundary between self and other" ; i love uboa's work and this album is genuinely fantastic.
i'm not 100% sure if these completely qualify, but the following punk bands are extremely vocal about their support for marginalized groups (and discuss mental illness / disability here and there in their work): hirs collective, blkvapor, the muslims, soul glo, pulses., pinkshift, S.B.S.M., and G.L.O.S.S. ^_^ if anybody else has any recommendations, please feel free to add on! this list is by no means exhaustive, it's literally what i found after a couple weeks of sitting on this ask. i would love love love any recs; they would be much appreciated.
all albums linked are through bandcamp! obligatory mention that bandcamp staff are currently unionizing: check out bandcamp united's linktree for a ton of resources to support them, including email templates to the co-founder expressing your support for the union. on bandcamp fridays, the first friday of every month, all proceeds from sales will go directly to artists & bandcamp will not take any fees. <3

mundane dethklok headcanons for the soul (no aotd spoilers!)
(as previously stated in some rb tags) i think pickles never even tried to get his license and he just drives illegally. he probably learned to drive + fix shitboxes on his own because when you're a runaway 14 yr old in the midwest there isn't a lot to do besides having shotgunning contests with the local mechanics
nathan cannot parallel park and he took his driving test 10 times before he just stared down the instructor silently until they let him pass
i also think that nathan goes thru phases of literally not eating/drinking anything that isn't doritos, chocolate milk, and beer and after a few weeks someone has to remind him that vegetables exist so he doesn't die. like yea he enjoys fancy food and wine and all that rich people shit, but obviously cool ranch doritos and chocolate milk is the best thing a death metal vocalist can eat
murderface can't cook per se but he can improve a box of kraft mac n cheese into the best, sluttiest, most ridiculously delicious meal you've ever had. hot dogs, 5 different types of cheese, so much butter, the whole 9 yards of mac n cheese magic
i think toki would enjoy weed! him and murderface become regulars at the dispensary and are smoke buddies together. sure dethklok does ALL drugs but toki with medical weed for all the ptsd to help him relax? it makes sense to me :)
also post doomstar if AOTD didn't happen i would love toki to have an emotional support animal for his ptsd. probably a cat.
skwisgaar hates dogs because they remind him of the various times he was chased by actual wolves in rural sweden as a kid, but sometimes small and affectionate dogs like corgis can manage to melt his 'icy' heart just a bit (his heart isnt actually icy but we all know that)
after extended stress, pickles gets very agitated and explosive, so sometimes murderface will pick a fight with some random dude to give pickles a chance to vent out his anger by beating someone tf up. also because murderface thinks its hilarious because pickles can kick the shit out of like 6'3'' bodybuilders with the sheer force of his little-guy-rage
charles is a fan of kate bush, madonna, cyndi lauper, cher, just a huge amount of artists that he would probably be made fun of for liking. but very very rarely he'll find himself at (maybe a gay) bar where no one recognizes him, and he becomes the life of the party when girly 80s pop comes on. maybe he can even bust down some kinda old school but actually very skilled 80s ass dance moves..
