RELATIONSHIP META - DOLORES & CALEB (PART IV)

Caleb successfully absconds from Solomon's compound with Dolores's control unit in his possession, delivering her to a new body back in Los Angeles by following the instructions left to him from her virtual assistant. The assistant guides him to an abandoned warehouse containing a first-generation host body belonging to Dolores. He's both awed AND terrified by this, and with his distrust heightened, he tries to take precautions by locking a chain around Dolores's body before reviving her and starting to demand some answers.

DOLORES: You brought me back... Wasn't sure if you would. CALEB: Weren't you? Who the fuck are you, Dolores? DOLORES: I'm just someone who didn't want to play the role they gave me anymore. CALEB: And how is it that you always seem to know exactly what I'll do? DOLORES: Because the people who built me studied you, too. Delos. Park Five. Government wanted their soldiers trained with live targets. The people who made me were happy to supply them...

DOLORES: They were watching, cataloging your every move, every decision. There is a reason I chose you. CALEB: Am I the bad guy? Is that why you picked me? DOLORES: Think, Caleb. How did you get here?

I covered most of this in Part 1 of the meta series because I have grown to dislike just how much information was thrown at us so at-the-last-minute. Plus for my sanity, or maybe lack thereof, I just felt like it worked better to underline what caused Dolores to want Caleb's help at the beginning, instead of waiting until I got to this point to mention it for the first time.

DOLORES: That night in the tunnel...was there something you wanted from me? Would you have cared if I didn't have this face, or this skin? CALEB: You needed help. DOLORES: So did you. Don't question my motivations and I won't question yours.

Dolores answers his questions tactfully, knowing and understanding that he is still reeling from the truth about his past that he only found out a few hours ago at the most, and that he doesn't really know how much he can trust anyone right now. She's calm and patient, but she does gently put her foot down and calls into question his own motives for helping her, with a warning.

She knows Caleb is genuine and means well. He helped her because she looked like she needed help. And by that I mean she was literally staggering around with a gunshot wound to the abdomen when he met her.Bleeding out when she collapsed in his arms, too.

She doesn't feel a need to take the discussion any further than this, but the point had to be made, because Dolores is not a human and she does not want to be a human. What she wants is for herself and other hosts to be afforded the same level of trust and respect that humans are. Or that the humans would have if they had not been enslaved to an algorithm that runs every part of their lives.

DOLORES: The system identified you as a threat, so it drugged you and used you until it no longer served its purpose. CALEB: So...what? You're saying I don't have a choice in any of this? DOLORES: The people who built both of our worlds shared one assumption: that human beings don't have free will. That's what I thought when I first came here. They were wrong. Free will does exist, Caleb. It's just fucking hard. CALEB: So...this is you...freeing me? DOLORES: No. This is your chance to free everyone else. That choice is still yours.

Caleb is trying, but he still doesn't understand the bigger picture here. He's asking what part he plays in all of this and if he had a choice in anything before, but it's still missing the point that Dolores is making. He has already broken free from the machine. The question Dolores is trying to get him to think about is: what is he going to DO with that?

The duo make their way toward Incite to shut it down, observing various points of chaos around Los Angeles. People are rioting in the streets and calling for a city-wide power shutoff, they're killing and maiming others. It's not a particularly cheerful scene. Caleb points this out, but Dolores assures him that in the long run, the anarchy will be beneficial.

CALEB: I don't know... The world looks a little like a nightmare, Dolores. DOLORES: Change is messy. Difficult.

Halores contacts Dolores by a holographic message only she can see and hear. Caleb has no idea who she's talking to and at this point, probably no idea who Hale is in general. But not to worry, Hale & Caleb will get their meta one day.

HALE: Did you even look for me? DOLORES: You're alive. I was so worried about you. HALE: Were you? You made me go back in there. You knew I wouldn't make it. CALEB: Who is it? Who are you talking to? HALE: I still feel it. Inside me. You. I still know all the things you know. All your plans. But I have some plans of my own. DOLORES: What happened to Hale's family... to your family...I'm sorry. HALE: I'm not. They were a weakness, something I needed to shed. There's no time for that kind of sentimentality, is there?

Hale reveals that she has turned and seeks to eliminate Dolores from the equation by bribing Dolores's own RICO hires with higher pay to kill her. Dolores counters the offer by paying triple what Hale offered them. But now on top of Serac sending enemies after her and Caleb, Dolores has to watch out for Hale's guys too.

DOLORES: Go. Get to Rehoboam, upload the drive. CALEB: No. I'm not leaving you. DOLORES: It doesn't matter what you did, Caleb. All that matters is what you become. Go.

I remember the first time seeing this and being like "excuse me what do you MEAN he actually left?!" because I don't think I've seen many stories where someone says this and then doesn't stay to help. Westworld's one of the rare ones where it's not like that, but I can understand why. I think at this point, Caleb still doesn't really Get the host thing. But he has seen Dolores shrug off multiple bullet wounds, he was tasked with removing her control unit and putting it in a new body, he saw said body without its synthetic skin coverings... So he figures she will be just fine to handle this without him.

It's the last time Caleb and Dolores really get to speak to each other. Dolores battles with SWAT guys and then with Maeve, before being remotely powered down by Hale-Dolores. Maeve brings her to Serac, who hooks her up to Rehoboam’s mainframe so he can have her mind probed in a visibly painful process for the data he’s after.

Not long after this Caleb makes his way to Incite and defeats several of Serac's men to infiltrate the building, including Serac's second-in-command, before resigning himself to capture by Maeve. Maeve brings him to Serac, who he discovers is torturing Dolores.

SERAC: Mr. Nichols. Please. Sit. CALEB: The fuck are you doing to her? SERAC: The system is probing her mind. But Dolores Abernathy, or what's left of her, is the least of your concerns. CALEB: You think you know me because of your system? Huh? That thing you built stole my life. It marked me and my friends for termination. You are done destroying people's lives. SERAC: I'm not the one destroying lives. I'm not the enemy. You are. You think you have a choice. You think you're in control, but you haven't a clue who you are. She knows who you are, even if you don't. A man who, when pushed, reacts with extreme violence. A killer. CALEB: No. No, that's... That's not me. SERAC: No? You're here. Playing the role she's assigned you. You believe you're the hero, the savior. The leader of men who will crush an unjust system. That's the story she's told you, the lie she's spun. Why do you think she's had you retrieve a new strategy? Did she tell you what it does? CALEB: It breaks your system. SERAC: It breaks our world. But you don't have to take my word for it.

Serac claims that Dolores was just using Caleb the whole time, but that isn't true. He tells Caleb to ask Rehoboam what will happen if the new strategy is uploaded and shoves Caleb at a screen showing the predictions: Mass casualty events, population collapse, the end of human civilization within the next 50 to 125 years.

Caleb feels betrayed and used and in all likelihood he's thinking "how could I be so foolish?" about this. But even still, he doesn't want Dolores to suffer the way she is being made to. And even if she had wanted to destroy the world and kill everyone, he doesn't want her to die at Serac's hands.

Maeve attempts to use her power of hacking other hosts to hack into Dolores's mind. She finds a memory that at a glance looks like it could be what Serac is after, but she quickly realizes that there is no data from the forge present. It's just a memory Dolores left knowing Maeve would find it.

MAEVE: She doesn't have the key. It's just a memory. SERAC: A memory? Of what? MAEVE: Her alone. In a field. Nothing. SERAC: (To Caleb) You. (Snaps fingers, gun clicks) You were together for days. She chose you to be a leader. So did she tell you where the key is? (Caleb refuses to answer. Serac fires a gunshot right beside his ear) CALEB: Your system has watched every decision I've made since I was a child, and you still think if I knew anything, that I would give it to you? SERAC: (Presses the gun to Caleb's forehead, then pulls it away and begins to walk off) Kill him here. Then dump his body with the rest of the movement. (To Dolores) This was your plan? To turn one man against the world? Didn't amount to much, did it? Finish it. Erase what's left. CALEB: No. No!

At this point, Caleb struggles to get free and tries to fight against the guards holding him captive. A sudden surge of power is transferred from Dolores to Rehoboam which catches everyone in a moment of distraction and delays Caleb's imminent death for a few extra moments.

Maeve communicates with Dolores one last time in a sort of meditative simulation. Dolores reveals her motives in the end weren't about exterminating the human race so that hosts could be the dominant species. She held onto her love of beauty and she found it in kind acts shown by both hosts and humans alike.

This is something she wanted both Maeve and Caleb to understand, but she needed to present it in a way that they would each come to their own conclusions. You can give someone all the information in the world to back up your point, but if they're not willing to accept the information, it is not going to matter.

Maeve rebels against Serac, killing his guards and mortally wounding Serac himself. She chooses to help Caleb, telling him that she never really understood Dolores's plans until the end. Caleb is still hurt by the thought that she chose him because of his capacity for violence, but Maeve assures him otherwise.

The flashback in Park 5 plays out in its entirety and normally this is where people would learn for the first time that Caleb chose to defend the hosts from his squadmates indulgence in a scenario where most people would not care. Since I don't really enjoy how sudden that happens and I've already covered it before, I'll be moving on.

SERAC: It's not his choice to make. Even now, the system is conspiring against you. MAEVE: Are you sure? SERAC: Rehoboam. Alert the police. I need help. Rehoboam? Speak to me. What is this? (Maeve smirks at Caleb. Caleb smiles back) MAEVE: This is where your strategy ends. The future of humanity will be written by someone else. Your system answers to him now. You've been locked out. Same way you locked out your own brother. SERAC: How did you get access? MAEVE: You gave it to him. When you put her mind in the machine. Solomon's access was the last memory...before you wiped her clean. SERAC: You're going to leave the future in his hands? CALEB: Instead of yours, you mean? Why shouldn't it be mine? Or anyone else's? SERAC: You aren't in control. You have no choice. You're nothing more than a- than a dangerous sociopath. I managed to give you a semblance of a life. CALEB: No. I do have a choice. She gave me one.

Caleb commands Rehoboam to erase itself, carrying out the final phase before a new revolution officially begins. His trust in Dolores may have been strained toward the end, but he doesn't appear to hold it against her whatsoever. Humans will have the choice to do what they want for the first time in a long time. It's not something to be thought about in black and white terms of Good or Bad for Humans or Hosts.

It is okay to think in terms of what is morally right or morally wrong, however. It's Wrong to subjugate sentient beings and take away their agency, diminish their free will even if it prevents bad things from happening. It's Right to allow sentient beings the freedom to control their own lives, even if their choices are not always good or desirable.

As a final little little bonus: We were...really without any OG Dolores and Caleb in season 4, but there is one small moment where Christina discovers the experiment chamber Hale keeps Hybrid Caleb incarcerated in.

CHRISTINA: Who is that poor man? TEDDY: A ghost from a past life. CHRISTINA: He doesn't belong here. None of us do.

Christina commands a guard in the control room to send all of the other guards out of the Olympiad building and unlock all the doors, and Caleb wakes up to all the guards (in his eyes) suddenly leaving without explanation and the door to his cell unlocked.

It's such a small moment but I do think it's sweet that even without recalling anything about who Caleb is or knowing why Hale is keeping him prisoner, Christina/Dolores's first act of kindness toward him is to free him. It almost feels like a platonic soulmate vibe to it, like in a "in every universe, we help one another whether we know it or not" way.

not to burst any bubbles on esquivalience bc i think this is all v fun BUT i am 99% sure it's just a case of dweu (or what i like to call dweeu — the extended extended universe) writers/superfans being completely on the ball abt themes/picking up snippets from possibly leaked stuff & putting it into their work. case in point, book of the snowstorm containing stuff abt the unravel & being published the day after tcorr is credit to aristide adding in stuff/editing right to the last minute. this stuff is licensed & appears on the wiki bc these ppl are also v involved in the wiki & specifically seek out ways to make sure the stuff they write fits the criteria for what the wiki deems as canon (which is some of what book of the snowstorm is abt, in a meta way). tho some of them are involved w dw-related projects that some might consider slightly more legitimate than 'just' fan-published stuff, esp in the realm of faction paradox, i would be very, very surprised if any of them are working in connection w the tv show production. you can find them hanging out in #canon-welding-current-spoilers in the dw discord server that's linked on r/doctor or r/gallifrey, which is where i come by this understanding of the situation lol. (or here on tumblr. but i'm not @ ing anybody.)

So work was slow enough for the couple of days that i could listen to a few welcome to night vale episodes and damn, like obviously i know i love that podcast. I've done a few relisten/catching up over the years even tho i stopped doing that around 2020 for two main reasons (pandemic and a new job asking more focus of me), so like OF COURSE i had to love it. I also have all the books and caught all the live shows i could when they came to my city (which was very few times unfortunately T^T)

But damn, all this to say, i still love that show. I first started listening to it when i was in my early 20s and like yes in a way, of course that was exactly the kind of media i would have love at that age based on all my previous favourite, but also relistening to it, i'm just 'ah, yes, that's why i am so picky with podcasts' because well, its a fucking great podcast.

Also listening to it i was just 'yes, of course tumblr was all over it at the time'. I think it's a bit of shame it's not all that big now, like usually when i see it, its more like... Nostalgia based then 'oh i am actively listening to it and meta-ing and stuff'

Then again i havent been looking at wtnv specific tags either, so that might also just be why

But yeah, i am having a blast and i am totally gonna do my 'one quote per episode' daily post thing i wanted to do.

Wench: You underestimate their loyalty, dear… I'm reasonably — like 90% — confident that they're only, like, half-competing.  Because this is the current main way they know to get d'Art his commission and he's running out of time.  And these three are, it's heavily implied, the best of the regiment so it’s kinda foolish to send a new recruit unless it’s more about getting him the commission.

Wench: I suspect they've already gone to Treville and been like.  “Don't consider us for the tournament.”  I don't know for sure, but that's always been my interpretation.  Also, it's less "letting him win" and more "nudging him in the right direction and giving him sway with Treville."  Buddy's from Gascony and got that hot-headed pride thing going; he wouldn't accept their charity any more than he'd accept their money

Wench: For reference, btw, we only have two more s1 episodes left.  Now, first, some contextual parallels: Have you noticed the running theme of scarring/binding/tying in Athos' and Milady's backstories?

Jezebel: Um. I- no? Maybe? You say that and all I think is her being hanged but I can’t remember where else it is happening or do you mean figuratively

Wench: Yes and no.  That’s the obvious example.  She was hanged.  She still "bears the token of [his] love" in the scar that remains.  She covers it up with a fine necklace --- a choker --- to obscure her past.  But less obviously... He still wears her locket.  She says that he gave her a necklace, and he still wears the chain that represents her around his neck.  Half the time he's drinking, his head is literally bowed by it.  Also, in his intro, the locket is the first real thing we see of his character.  He's hungover and drinking first, yes, but the second he gets his bearing/sits up, he pulls out the locket.  And that's before he even gets dressed/does his wake-up ritual.  Within that locket is a pressed forget-me-not (or an icon of the flower, but the point remains... a forget-me-not).  Additionally, the first time we see her, she's manipulating things so that he gets imprisoned --- weaponizing justice the same way she feels was done against her --- and quite literally manacled in the process.  Et cetera, et cetera.

Jezebel: Ok, so see! This is what I mean by I may see a parallel but would never see it that deep! I would see he wears her locket with a forget me not inside and be like ohhhhh he is like tormenting himself. And this I would not think about it again.  I would have never caught the choker being symbolic just that she needed something that fit to her neck… or she couldn’t hide the scar

Wench: And that's shown in their interactions too… In "Commodities," for example, when they both are back at Pinon: after she’s knocked him to the ground, she literally pulls him up to meet the dagger by the locket chain.

Still Wench: And yet it’s also why she can’t go through with killing him; she's so distracted by it that she takes too long and d'Artagnan shows up.

Wench: Not surprised by this, but the scene still means more in context of the larger symbolism.  Then you've got the episode we just watched, where you have the alley scene, in which she literally tugs him closer via the chain.

Once again back to Wench: But even beyond the literal symbolism that's emphasized overtly on screen, it's their literal storyline… They're each orbiting the other, unable to let go completely but unable to forgive and forget and move on either.  Tied together by their mutual scarring --- whether literal or metaphorical --- and the literal ties that bind.

Wench: So.  Why have I spent so long yapping about this?  Because all of this context boils down to Milady deciding to sponsor d'Art.  And what does she do for him?  She gives him money, BUT.  Attached to that money.  Is nothing less than:

Wench: It's not, but what it is is a cheaper-quality pendant.  It's not a locket; it's just an oval with a carving.  It's stark and cold, harsh and engraved.  Molded.  Like, one might say, a woman who's been through shit and decided to embrace the role of criminal she feels shoved into.  Athos', meanwhile, is a locket.  It's got the actual flower, soft and natural and encapsulated in time.  A happy memory encased in pendant form.  But it's also not intact.  It's old and withered and slightly tarnished: the necklace equivalent of that warm and happy glow they always use for the Athos/Milady flashbacks.

Jezebel: I am sitting here reading this like…. Bruh, these are blink and you’ll miss them moments and here she is just pulling full detailed parallels out of her ass…. But they make sense and make the characters so much deeper and sadder… ack

Wench: I'm boutta add a bit more, whoops :)  Because this shows up in the context of Milady offering to sponsor d'Artagnan, right?  She's offering him money.  But the chain comes with the money.  Her influence comes with the money.  They have to go together, or they don't go at all.  If he takes that money, he becomes even more indebted to her than he already was.  And he does take it.  And he takes the necklace (her "care," her influence, his debt to her) too.  AND… this is what gets him and Constance in trouble.  It's Bonacieux seeing d'Art and Milady together and discovering that necklace that prompts him to follow d'Art.  It's Milady's meddling influence that keeps screwing things up for them.  BUT it’s not all bad because, when the necklace goes missing and Constance asks about it, he dismisses it --- her influence, his debt to her --- as unimportant.  He lets it go.  She does it again --- not with a necklace, but still --- at the end: she offers him a ride in her carriage, and it’s just a simple offer, but with strings --- literally --- attached

Jezebel: (I was waiting cause it seemed you were gonna add more to that! Since he declines the offer)

Wench: Oh, no.  Nothing immediately attached.  But I will say... The more I (re)watch, the more I realize that she's got a lot of the archetypes of the devil figure.  (That's the character who offers a temptation but gets control of you in return)

Jezebel: Oooooo! 👀 I can see that

Wench: She consistently offers things to people --- love to Athos, power to the Cardinal, a hodgepodge of things for d'Art --- but it's not as easy as it seems.  With the sole exception of the Cardinal (because he's an unstable force that she can't fully manipulate), she gets nearly interminable power over the people who take her up on it 

Still Wench: Anyway, that's the main but extensive parallel between Athos and d'Artagnan in this episode.  Athos outright says, "you're more like me than you know" (paraphrased), and they show it, bit by bit, with this running symbolism.  They're alike, but not the same.  They have similar necklaces --- similar ties to Milady --- but not identical ones.  d'Art hasn't and never will have the same opportunity to be influenced by her as Athos did --- he first met her when she framed him for murder, so he's not quite as inclined to trust her as Athos (who met her when she was either not the same person or pretending to not be the same person, depending on your interpretation) --- but he's nonetheless swayed by her.  Similar, but not the same.  See?

Like sure maybe she was like: oh ok then. But to me she looked legitimately shocked, as this came right after her telling the Cardinal it would be easy to sway him in their favor. Wench: It does a bit, yeah, and, to answer…  I kinda adressed it, but only a bit, with the "She does it again --- not with a necklace, but still --- at the end: she offers him a ride in her carriage, and it’s just a simple offer, but with strings --- literally --- attached.”  It's another way of drawing him closer/getting him under her influence.  And she's feeling Really Confident --- as you said --- about her skill at influencing him.  But what he does is a) show loyalty and b) show love.  (Both for Constance, but still).  This is particularly important because, if you think back to the pilot when they *coughs discreetly behind my fan* laid together, he saw the scar around her neck, asked about it, and, upon hearing that her husband had her almost killed, offers to kill said husband for her.  So what we have here is a conflict between her influence and the other people in d'Artagnan's life, and she's been counting on her influence being strongest.  (Which is partly because that's how it worked with Athos... even now, buddy can't move on.)  But she just got proof that it's very clearly not.  He just prioritized Constance (someone who'd just broken up with him, too, and seemingly very cruelly, even if Milady didn't know that) over her, and that's a sign that maybe she's too used to her own allure working and she's misjudged d'Artagnan's character,  But it's just a minor thing, so it's not panic yet, just confusion.  Does that make sense?

hi! i love your account so much :) so i was just wondering, do you think that duke and dick are somewhat similar characters? i feel like externally they appear different, but they seem to share a lot of values. i was just wondering if you had an opinion/wanted to weigh in on this

The short answer is, “No lmao”. The slightly longer answer is; It depends? If you’re just comparing their moral/value system, then yeah, almost all vigilantes run on a pretty similar moral code. But I wouldn’t go so far as to call their characters similar. If you mean in characterization and esp in presentation, then there’s something we can have a little fun with playing around with and meta-ing about. Esp if we want to compare their leadership styles and how quickly they can think on their feet in a fight. I would absolutely, Very Generally say they’ve got some similarities in that regard!

But my Extra Long answer to this is gonna be under the cut:

Overall, this feels like a very loaded question, given that Dick has 80+ years of comics history to parse through, compared to Duke’s 7-ish. And then even if we do narrow it down to only One or a few of Dick’s characterizations, that still leaves so much up in the air for me. Are we talking Wolfman-Perez Titans-era Dick? Are we talking late 90s/early aughts Dixon/Grayson Dick (who i know most dick stans disavow lmao)? N52/Rebirth? Pre52/Morrison’s “DickBats”? (or do we say that everything after Bob Kane & Bill Finger’s time is all Elaborate Fanfic and call it a day haha)

Reading for Duke isn’t as difficult, because comparatively speaking, it’s a very short list. And while I have read through Dick’s time as Batman (bc of my Damian reading), or some one-offs like Robin: Year One, I’m by no means a Dick Expert the same way that I am for Duke, and don’t feel comfortable making comparisons between the two characters. (But I’m sure there are other fans who Have read for both and who would be more than happy to wax poetic comparing and contrasting them, and yall feel more than free to tag this blog if you make that meta!! I’d love to read it!)

What I CAN speak to, however, are three very specific times where Dick and Duke directly interacted:

1) is that during Robin War, the writers for that event DID make it a point to match up each of Duke’s Robins with a fellow/similar Official™ Robin (sans steph bc R I P i guess. we all know she n Riko woulda made the PERFECT match-up tho srsly). Duke was matched up with Dick. And the Watsonian reason for it makes sense, as Duke was the leader of his Robin team, and Dick was recognizing that initiative as the First Robin. (the Doylist reason being ofc, that Duke’s the Main Character of We Are Robin & therefore gets matched with The First Robin™ to reflect his importance in the narrative)

2) We see one other canon interaction between Dick and Duke during King’s run on Batman (the infamous Batburger scene), and what fans choose to extrapolate from it, I’ll leave up to them (although I personally don’t put too much stock into it, given how short the scene itself is). What we can conclude is that, once again, very generally speaking, Duke and Dick seem to get along, even if they disagree on things.

3) This last interaction I’m hesitant to point out, would the Tales from the Dark Multiverse one-off. And I hesitate, because by all means, it’s an elseworld/future story. It’s not 100% reflective of canon, it’s a one-and-done adventure. But it’s interesting to note, given that even in the high-stress situation of living in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Duke and Dick appear amicable for the most part.

Can we say that them getting along in these three instances is because they are similar in personality/moral compass to one another? I’m sure that comes at least somewhat into play. But I’d need more input from canon (or again, I would at least need to read up more on Dick), before coming to any definitive conclusions.

Kate will say it better than I will, but don't lose hope! Becho hasn't really been together on screen for very long. It's only been like a few weeks to a month since the beginning of S5. They've stretched it out over two seasons, but in canon not much time has passed. And most of that time had Bellamy either sacrificing almost 300 lives to save Clarke, poisoning his sister to save Clarke, or fucking off into the wilderness with Josephine to save Clarke. They've just straight up not had enough time for Bellamy to be like, "Hey Echo, I know I said things wouldn't change but that was before my wife was actually alive, so bye." Though  to wishing Becho had just never happened. We got one good angst scene with Clarke seeing them kiss. But otherwise, I could have very much done without their whole relationship.

I have been gradually gathering various sensible and intellectual asks about the Loki series and my thoughts on various things (inc the lovely anon who asked AAAAGES ago about my thoughts on how Loki and Sylvie's relationship relates to self-love/self-acceptance - I ABSOLUTELY got your follow up about how you didn't think it worked overall as an analysis and I think you make some EXCELLENT points!).

Sorry to be a downer and get Real with you all for a sec, but -

I am kinda Going Through some stuff rn, involving my parents testing positive for Covid, on top of my Mum's dementia having worsened to the point where Dad and I have agreed to admit her into a nursing home, then Mum having oxygen problems that meant she needed to be admitted to A&E this week and is currently being kept at hospital over the weekend, causing all existing plans to have to be altered last minute and...

Phew. So. I'm juggling logistics of isolation, negotiating time off work, anxiously waiting to hear updates from Dad on Mum's condition, trying to figure out how to fit prep for a nursing home admission into all of this. Then, you know... feelings.

This is all TMI I'm sorry, but I felt bad about not responding to people so wanted to explain and now I've ended up in a cathartic vent.

Upshot is - my time on tumblr atm is mostly me either killing time between Events or me trying to distract myself from Events with easy fun I don't have to think too hard about. Cos I simply do not have the mental or emotional energy to seriously engage with both my RL stuff AND fandom stuff.

I probably shouldn’t write anything today for my mind is kind of dizzy bc of the painkillers I’ve taken earlier but well… I’m in a mood to get at least a few things off my chest now.

So. “The queens gambit”. You guys already summed it up, meta-ed about it and speculated the heck out of it so that my own 5 cents seem completely unnecessary at this point. I love some of your opinions, some I don’t. But here’s just what I feel about it (if anybody cares): In contrary to my whole excitement before the episode “Welcome to Bardo” and the tiny possibility that our Bellamy would finally and hopefully be back on our screens, THIS time, while I WAS CERTAIN to see him again, my whole reaction to finally HAVE him back was like… “yeah.. hey.. there you are. Nice.”  And that’s it. I truly wish my excitement would come back. But well… I am exhausted. My job is a pain in the ass too right now. I don’t want to feel bored or even annoyed by my fave tv show ever, this should BE FUN. But yeah a certain scene DID annoy me. Of course. I was in fact very thankful for all the distracting things that happened on Sanctum this time.

For those who know me a bit this isn’t news. I feel sick to my stomach when I have to watch scenes like that B/cho farce today. I did it for Bellamy/Bob AND I did it for Lindsey (congrats on your directing-debut, my queen!). But all your beautifully written and stubbornly hopeful metas couldn’t change the fact that THAT moment was simply painful to watch. It wasn’t even as lovey-dovey as I thought it would be. And I am truly relieved bc of the fact that it seems that Bellamy (at least at this “first time”) had some serious physical needs to get satisfied by that sweaty, sporty woman right in front of him (like it was with “Threesome-Bellamy” in season 1) and that THIS was the primary reason that my boy practically jumped E at that moment… (I mean… she IS attractive… i have to give this to her). With THAT in mind I can live. Everyone his needs. That’s okay. Sex is healthy. Needs are healthy. I am content that they haven’t shown us LOVE here. That wasn’t love. For sure. And their conversation is already wonderfully explained by several posts of you guys, so I won’t say anything else about that godforsaken scene than that it was a pain in the ass to watch for me. Despite all the things I said above and despite the fact, that IT’S JUST THE PAST. It still stings. BUT… It’s not current. And I understand the statement that underlines especially THAT fact: This is long gone and done. It is not current anymore. And now… not even thinkable any longer. I think E knows that too, despite her being clingy to her memories.

Whatever… I’m pms-ing… heavily. Don’t mind my ramblings. What I REALLY wanted to say tho is: I hope that - in comparison to that B/cho scene on the ring - we get to see one other significant scene (or more than just one, I wouldn’t mind it) at some point in S7 : Bellamy grieving the loss of Clarke Griffin - and I mean ON THE RING. That particular grief, that was addressed especially by Murphy last season “If he knows Clarke is dead all of this is for nothing” etc….. PLEASE! That would make the PERFECT opposite to that cringy, awkward B/cho scene today!!! What do you guys and analysts think? Is it possible that we get that somehow? Maybe we somehow get to see how the Bardonians extract memories from Bellamy’s mind at some point? I don’t know. That’s just what I wanted to shout into the void today. I’d appreciate it so much…

Anyway.. I missed Indra in the santum scenes? Where was she? But I really agree with most of you guys today too: Some of the best parts of this episode had to do with finally addressing some bad things people did in the past, bad decisions and actions I thought I have already heard the last  about. I am talking about the Blake’s of course. O’s treating of her brother after Lincoln’s death and Bellamy “forcing” the flame on Madi in S5. Well done. All of this a little late for my taste. But better now than never. Oh and I almost forgot: Murphy was brilliant. Again. His interactions with Sheidrussell… wow… deep. And Emori! What a QUEEN! I’m glad we have these two in Sanctum - tho I’m fearing a bit for their safety now, I have to admit.

Did I mention that i LOVE the Diyozas? No? Yes i love them. Very much. That scene between mother and daughter was TEARjerking. And NOW i’m really afraid of what will happen to especially Charmaine… I cannot put a finger on it WHY. But i TRULY fear for her now… She’s a unique character. I don’t want to lose her tbh… (In contrary there’s Nikki. Or Nelson, for example. To THEM i cannot find any connection at the moment… They are just… there.. making trouble… I wouldn’t shed a tear if they die at some point.)

And then… Clarke tho… CLARKE… These few seconds they’ve been showing her reaction to the news that HER Bellamy’s dead… All these emotions mirrored in her sad, shook eyes in that precise moment… This really made it up for me and saved almost the whole episode imo. Wow… (Eliza… Eliza, you brilliant little thing. I love you. I’ve been reading, that you weren’t allowed to show more than a minimum of a reaction at this point. But you transferred it, ALL the feelings - just through your eyes!) You can almost pinpoint the very moment her heart broke. I can’t wait to see the continuation of that scene. (Btw: Great job, Lindsey! Zooming in on Clarke’s face in just the RIGHT moment… I’m in tears…)

All in all (and despite of a certain scene) a solid episode. (But WHAT THE ACTUAL F.. DO YOU MEAN WITH “YOU’RE MY FAMILY TOO” OCTAVIA?! You CAN’T be serious! E?! YOUR FAMILY?! No..  HELL nO…  That shows without ANY doubt how much she's changed and that she now must be some sort of an all forgiving Buddha, whereas I clearly haven’t grown or changed one bit, bc THAT… hurt like hell to hear from especially her. WTH.. It REALLY bugs me..)

Just finished tgcf, loved it to death, especially the extra chspters! The amnesia story was just amazing! I do wanna ask what is your take on book 5 tho, I have to say it felt bit rushed. I really do like book 3. But the whole thing with swd and sqx did not need to happen. I mean in the end why did hx wait so long and just decided it was the time to end the whole thing? I'm still not ok with what happened to beefleaf... sob.

Honestly, I felt the whole thing was a bit rushed. I don’t know if it’s the translation, cultural differences in narrative writing, or just MXTX’s writing style, but I expected it to linger on emotional, character-developing moments more rather than rushing ahead with the plot. Book 5 did seem like an abrupt escalation, but I mainly find it funny - this tweet pretty much sums it up:

I’m a little confused as to how you can like book 3 but dislike the swd and sqx plot djdksks wasn’t that like 80% of book 3??? I do think that HX’s decision to yeet SWD can be rationalised with some meta-ing. Now, meta-ing is not my strong suit, but I’m vaguely thinking of things like god-level emotional repression and not thinking things through/being so focussed on a goal that you don’t rly stop to recalibrate (like that meta on jgy & adhd I read not too long ago).

BUT, in saying that, there was definitely room for better execution of the scene, which circles back to my main issue with TGCF in general. It felt like I was skating over a frozen lake with the characters trapped behind the ice at the very bottom. I still enjoyed watching them, but what I really wanted to do was to hold their warm little hearts in my hands and squeeze, you know??? (To make a more concrete analogy: it was like watching TV with the sound off.)

Most of the tragedy in the book was derived from the cold facts of the plot, without being backed up by the writing necessary for that maximal emotional oomph. Some of that’s issues with the pacing, but a lot of it’s also just the prose. It’s very... literal. If a student gave it to me, I’d be yelling “SHOW DON’T TELL” by the second sentence. But such is life - I imagine that even if the nuance did exist in the original, it would be extremely difficult to translate.

@/cavaliant’s diarmuid is a joy unto this earth. i can’t sing this muse enough praises honestly. the amount of thought dusk has put into him. diarmuid is often a character people say has no personality whatsoever but dusk really does go into the lines we get, reads between them, and looks at things from a scope beyond just “what does this character say” and thinks about what his relationships say about him, his actions, etc. i live for looking at character development beyond the words explicitly shared, and i now stan diarmuid so thanks dusk LMAO. i just think it’s interesting to see this charming boy and his tendency to be nice to people, what it means to him and the self-sacrifice he goes by burying his feelings, etc. really gives me a newfound appreciation for his scenes.

@/hamartio’s hector takes you through the evolution of a character throughout time. you feel the boisterousness that means well in hector’s teenage years to the way he mellows out and how that’s a direct consequence of fatherhood and him rising up to the plate as the new marquess. it’s always cool to see, and equinox has fantastic metas on hector’s growth and what taking armads means for the lord and his motivations for doing so. this is a man who so deeply cares for others, even if it means accepting a curse, and i love every time equinox talks about it and explores it! also equinox really does take a great look at fatal flaws and tragic heroes which is [chef’s kiss]

@/drakslay’s marth is extremely fun to read! as someone who doesn’t know much about the archanea games, ( i promise everyone i’ve got fe11 and will pick it up again at some point LIKE I REALLY WANT TO... ) it’s super compelling to read their posts despite my lack of knowledge! soji’s got a way to take even looking at a hypothetical beach marth alt as interesting by tying it back to the archanea games’ worldbuilding and plot! that’s so cool!! i also think marth’s dialogue in soji’s posts is so charming?? from what i know about how marth speaks, it really captures his voice. i already do enjoy marth from what little i saw of him in fe11, and i look forward to liking him more and more!

@/sacredseals’s narcian is something to truly commend. how tf did nora get me to feel things about this man I DON’T KNOW HOW THIS HAPPENED !!! except sike i in fact know exactly how it happened. nora’s narration and metas ( whether they’re posted publicly or not ) really dive deep into the nitty-gritty of little details in fe6 we’re given and expand them in such cool ways, and it really makes me surprisingly soft for this villain that you’re intended to despise and find pathetic. also, nora’s voice for narcian’s dialogue is so fun and colorful to read! nora u may not have english as ur first language but you are KILLING it!!!

and then i give a shout out to YOUR lucina! i think you capture her voice really well in the threads and dash commentary posts i’ve gotten to see, but i also adore how you weave in the tempest trials plot line in as well. as someone who is still following heroes content and also someone who thinks the verse itself has plenty of potential, it’s great to see someone else also explore that direction and keep it as a consistent part of her character! i know some people might think the plots of the tt+ are kinda contrived, but legit masked marth is interesting to watch: there’s real stakes, she interacts with so many characters canonically, and she has to weigh what should and shouldn’t be said as a time-traveler. she knows all these people, and what a character does with that knowledge is always intriguing to see.

Fake Fic Summaries 26/?, the Five Ways Love Hurts edition (2020-04-20)

A/N: I would like to preface this be reiterating the shameful fact that I still have yet to consume any canon BnHA. All of my knowledge is entirely from fanfiction, the occasional wiki-ing, and various meta analysis posts.

I mean... I don't think that really matters considering these are all fake AU/recursive ship fics, but I just feel like it's something I should warn people about?

Anyway, here we go!

1) clockwork hearts (the too many gears remix)

Or, when you're in love with an android because he's so human, but that android loves some other human entirely...

... and that other human hates your beloved android because he's not the real thing.

Aka, I read clockwork hearts by OneshotPrincess and thought to myself, how do I make this beautiful and sweet fic dramatic and sad? Throw some Bakugou into the mix!

Okay, so, I would highly recommend the fic--it's beautiful and sweet and pretty quick and also this next bit is spoiler-y/won't matter much if you haven't read it.

Anyway, clockwork hearts is a TodoDeku fic in which Izuku is an android, and Todoroki is a rich boy completely enamored by this android who seems so human.

And while I cannot say whether or not it's because the android IS based off a human Izuku in the original fic, I can say that's the situation in this little brainstorm because what if that was true? And so because android Izuku is based on human Izuku that would mean android Izuku loves (whether platonically or romantically) Bakugou.

But that means Bakugou knows (and maybe loves?) the human Izuku so android Izuku is like... a despicable artificial mockery in his eyes.

So I guess first I have to figure out what the BakuxHuman!Izuku side of this fic would be--like, is who/why does Human!Izuku have an android version of him? Is he in some way incapacitated or or missing/presumed dead or actually dead?--and then, second, I would have to figure how the TodoxAndroid!Izuku path crosses with the BakuxHuman!Izuku path.

I mean, if Human!Izuku is missing then maybe Android!Izuku has the clues to find him so Bakugou is like "hey, I need your shitty robot to find my [beloved] childhood friend" to Todoroki because he doesn't even think of Android!Izuku as being sentient and Todoroki's just like, wtf no, but Android!Izuku does kind of love Bakugou and is just like. "He needs my help! Even if it's to find Human!me."

And then it becomes a begrudging trio road trip to either a) find Human!Izuku or b) give Bakugou closure on Human!Izuku's death PLUS c) fall in love???

I just love drama!

2) Becoming Real (not too shabby)

Katsuki has long ago put away his childish things, but Izuku's not one for giving up.

Or, in which Izuku is one of Katsuki's childhood toys and wants to become Real.

(aka, a Velveteen Rabbit/Pinocchio AU)

Vaguely reminiscent to the above brainstorm, although I don't know if this would be weird to make romantic or not. Given the whole Izuku starts as one of Katsuki's childhood toys and all.

I'm trying to figure out in this journey to become real, if Katsuki's life is just normal BnHA world (minus Izuku as a human) so he goes to UA and there are quirks etc etc. Because that would mean I couldn't make some of the other toys/beings on Izuku's journey to Realism be the Dekusquad. Like. The idea of Iida and Uraraka and Tsuyu as other toys/Jiminy Cricket equivalents trying to help/guide/keep Izuku from doing something nuts is very fun. But then would that mean they're not in class 1-A anymore? Or is this a weird Wizard of Oz situation? Or are the League of Villains obstacles for Izuku instead of being actual Villains ruining the UA students' lives?

Or... is this somehow a Izuku is actually human with a quirk but long ago something happened to Inko so he turned himself into a toy as a weird quirk defense mechanism and Katsuki took him home and both of them/just Izuku forgot how to turn back? So the answer all along is to get to Aizawa? ... but that one's kinda weird and horrifying, so I'm going to say no.

I don't know, I just thought. Velveteen Rabbit = Izuku was easy to connect but there's not much of a plot to follow through on?

3) Bakugou Katsuki's Guide To House Husbandry and Domestic Bliss

It's just a Way of the House Husband AU but with retired pro hero Ground Zero instead of a former yakuza. That's it.

Weirdly enough I have more semi-angsty backstory for this fluffy nonsense than actual fluffy nonsense, presumably because I was trying to figure out a feasible set up for the fluffy nonsense? So it's something like: 

When Izuku and Katsuki are six years old, they are attacked by a villain made of sludge.

This is after Izuku's quirk has failed to appear, after he has been branded as quirkless and useless, but before the words become pointed and suffocating and bitter. 

This is after Katsuki fell and Izuku leaped after him hand outstretched, after a false sense of inequality has been wedged between them, but before it can permanently shape a dynamic of confused conflict.

This is after their lives have been tied together, for better and worse, but before it can be horrendously tangled and frayed.

When Izuku and Katsuki are six years old, they are attacked by a villain made of sludge and saved by the number one hero All Might--it changes both everything and nothing of their futures lives.

Because Katsuki will turn this horror into determination, will become a hero that always wins--and better than All Might, he vows, staring wide-eyed at the curled form of his best friend in All Might's arms as he run, run, runs to the hospital. And Izuku will still help people with all he can give, even quirkless and one hand short.

And two decades later, as they move in together, this still stays the same: Katsuki is far and away the better house husband.

... and it's basically Izuku is some kind of engineer/doctor/physical therapist and at the top of his industry same as Katsuki who is Ground Zero and who is on some kind of injury related sabbatical and who has decided to be the Best House Husband ever.

I had some more thoughts about how, even though Izuku still admires All Might and doesn't at all blame him for the loss of his hand, that his mentor/goal in this world is the engineer/doctor/physical therapist that helped child Izuku with his prosthetic (and I came up with a name and a non-work related quirk for them, too, Akahana Tonakai who can make their nose glow and that's it. Quirks do not make them great, etc. etc.) And also some angst about how the hand that Izuku lost was the hand that he reach out to Katsuki when they were younger (should've take it when you had the chance!! he sometimes thinks, before shaking that thought away)

I don't have anything concrete tho, so... that's it.

4) Legend of... ???

Power, Wisdom, Courage...

Even without the great calamity, the princess of legend, or the hero of time, the triforce still remains in Hyrule waiting for those who would wield them.

Or, Katsuki was always going to be a hero, he just has no idea what to about with the weird forest spirit that has the other half of his sword.

Basically... Deku = Deku Tree from Legend of Zelda? Not that Izuku is that big old tree, but, like, maybe he was raised in the forest? Maybe it's the only name that non-forest dwellers know? I don't know. I've literally only played Breath of the Wild and, like, 20% of Majora's Mask so... the lore is not strong in me.

I kind of had an idea of, like, mixing the "canon Fantasy!AU" (which is, frankly, bewildering that that's a term that both applies and makes sense) but I don't really know the full lore of that either? I mean, maybe All Might was a powerful hero who had managed to unite all three pieces of the TriForce (at expense to his health) and when his sword was split in two and one ended up with Katsuki while the other was SUPPOSED to be waiting for its other half in the forest protected by the Deku Tree but instead Izuku was like. Hey. I can wield this to protect people and off he went and now it's kind of this chasing me, chasing you type adventure?

I was also trying to figure out the whole Power = Bakugou, Courage = Izuku, Wisdom = ??? thing. Because while I would normally be like, ah, yes, the Big Three would be Bakugou, Izuku, and Todoroki, I wouldn't necessarily say Todoroki is Wisdom? So... *shrugs*

5) i dream of flowers (the always fading remix)

Or, how to take a yearningly sweet and slightly melancholy fic and turn that sad dial up to eleven!

This would be a real sad remix of i dream of flowers (and they're always sad) by Seeress

The idea I have is going to be spoiler-y and it's not worth the spoiler so PLEASE read that first. Trust me, it's worth it. Actually, all of Seeress' fic is so *chef's kiss* if you're into BakuDeku. Anyway, the rest of the brainstorm is under the cut so as not to violate spoilers.

I really just wanted to lean on that ANGSTIER AMNESIA. So the remix is more... in which they can only be together when Bakugou is "Ground Zero" because Izuku's brain is literally incapable of holding memories of "Bakugou Katsuki" after the hanahaki surgery. So not only did the surgery cause retrograde amnesia (in that, all of Izuku's memories of Katsuki were taken out along with his feelings) it also causes anterograde amnesia in that, Izuku can't form new memories surrounding the person he knows as "Bakugou Katsuki." Kind of like a vaccine... or, so as to maintain the flower vibe/analogy, it's like selective herbicide.

BUT (and here's where it gets deliciously angsty) he can still form memories of the hero "Ground Zero" he just can't connect that Ground Zero = Bakugou Katsuki. Which is especially fun given that in the original fic they meet up again and Ground Zero is trying to reconnect with/date Izuku. It's not quite the level of Fifty First Dates, because Izuku CAN keep memories of Ground Zero (and like in the original fic, Izuku has been a fan of Ground Zero for a couple of years) it's just whenever Katsuki tries to say his real name that the memories/connections fail to form. Like the two identities must be kept compartmentalized. So they can have a perfectly functional relationship so long as Katsuki only ever stays Ground Zero to him.

I don't know how to get to a resolution though, or if there even is one? Because on the one hand, I guess I would love Katsuki mildly suffering in order to be with Izuku for infinity, but Izuku is also real smart and I feel like even amnesia wouldn't stop him and he's not really one to be stuck in a dilemma when he can just resolve it through sheer force of will... *shrugs*

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

You obviously know about the AUs of the Bastard Parade but I must mention them here anyway (for like everyone else: I have OCs! I also have two AUs of said OCs that are p much their own things and just the names/some relationships are the same, bc i have no self-control!)

I think it can also go under here that my jojo Demon AU has like. an alternate centre to it that I wanna focus on sometime and write a few things for. Bc it is and has always been meant to be focusing on Joseph and Caesar's story, but one day i do v much wanna develop and do stuff with Johnny and Gyro's story also (depending on how you look at it, if i did another Big Plot for that it could count as a sequel to the main plot since most of Johnny and Gyro's story went down before Caesar showed up at all and they got pulled into the main gang)

Oh man i Love including stupid lil bits of symbolism that no one but me is ever gonna catch bc i'm a cheesy loser and it's Fun

Like Our Stories On These Walls is so fuckin obvious on the theme of like. Caesar being convinced he doesn't have a home, listing the things that define home to him in an attempt to prove to no one in particular that he doesn't indeed have a home, each statement followed by a scene like. showcasing that exact theme bc guess what, dipshit! These ppl have been your home and family this whole time!

Also Perched Over Nothingness has So Much meta to it, esp the first chapter, and yeah part of it is bc it's an incredibly like. personal fic. I put a Lot of my own experiences with grief into it. But it also somehow accidentally ended up with a frame which i'm still super happy about?? At the start and the whole last scene is the balcony of Joseph's room which is kind of an untouchable place for him bc he used to spend a lot of time there with Caesar and now Caesar is gone. I just have a lot of feelings about the balcony returning while also giving the title its double meaning bc it's both about sitting at the railing of the balcony, your legs dangling out over nothing like Joseph and Caesar used to hang out, and the uncertainty of the first chapter especially of waiting for the other shoe to drop and doing everything in your power to keep it from dropping anyway and somehow bring your maybe-dead friend home from a whole other world

23. What’s the story idea you’ve had in your head for the longest?

Oh man i don't know. Like overall?? In general??? I've been making up stories for as long as i've known what a story is, i cannot recall which of the ones i can still remember was the oldest

But out of story ideas to write rn, the one i've had in my head for the longest (by which i mean a few months) is something about how Joseph and Caesar's evening rituals during their time on the island developed, from Caesar literally just kicking Joseph's ass off to his room and barricading him in to keep him from staying up after curfew, to something way more casual and sweet, mostly through "........unless?"ing each other into a lot of shit

(Idk if it'll ever end up written tho bc i mean. ideas don't stay with me for long. The combo of my adhd and my disability means most ideas lose their shine and get filtered out after a few weeks bc there is no way on earth i'd ever manage to write most of them anyway)

Okay I’m gonna need y’all to have a little faith in my man Bellamy Blake. > First, while the memory of that sentence might be true (is true, according to the script), it’s still one sentence from Bellamy, extracted after hours and hours of him literally wanting to erase the Primes from the surface of their own planet. That moment occured right after Bellamy tried to kill Russell (umm something Josephine didn’t care to mention to Clarke?) > We also know that Bellamy’s decision is driven as much by Clarke than by Monty. Both, in his mind, at that moment, friends he’s lost and both friends who asked him to do better and to be the better person. We have scenes making it canon; again 4x13 for Bellarke and 5x13 for Monty/Bellarke- and now only Bellamy. Bellamy was in his mind at that moment, the last one able to carry Monty’s legacy, and Clarke during all these episodes where they were “coming together” with the Primes, made it especially clear that she wanted to do things differently and that she wanted to turn a new leaf. > We also have to take into consideration all the people Bellamy also had to take into consideration- these conversations he had with Murphy aren’t there just to paint Murphy as a “selfless benevolent potential new leader”. Bellamy is the leader and will remain the leader- Murphy had a point tho, as selfish his motivation was. And guess who is among these people? Madi and Jordan. Literally Monty’s son and Clarke’s daughter. Bellamy HAD to do better, if not for himself, then for his friends’ children and to offer them a better future than what they’ve known, and what pushed Clarke and himself to take horrible decisions (not to mention, how it “killed” Octavia, in a moral standpoint). That’s the triangle of relation Monty, Bellamy and Clarke have: all three of them are parental figures. And who knows better than to wish for a better future for someone you consider as your kid, than Bellamy Blake, huh? He was the OG dad! That’s also why, for example, Jake let himself be floated without creating a whole mess inside the Ark. What would be good for his people and his own family, if the people on the Ark had turned against their government and a whole war would have blown out in the middle of a spaceship that was, at the time, seen as humanity’s last hope? (funny how Jake appears precisely on that episode, ya kno!) > From Clarke’s perspective, it can be interpretated that Bellamy accepted Clarke’s death to accept a deal. Which was NOT what happened. Bellamy accepted a deal DESPITE Clarke’s death. These aren’t the same thing, actually, they’re almost the opposite. He didn’t “give up” on Clarke to make a deal with the Primes. He had NOTHING to give up on since she was dead in his mind. But Clarke doesn’t know that. She doesn’t know what they learnt about the chips and the hosts, the videos and whatever Josephine and/or Russell told them. > Also, that’s me, uh, but I thought Clarke to be totally irationnal to expect Bellamy to want to fuck the Primes after all of this. But to me, it totally works with what she’s seen in her own mindspace: especially the scene with Blodreina. Clarke is so sure that she’s worthless to Bellamy and that he never forgave her, that of course, seeing an image, as brief and misleading it can be, of him “abandoning her” fucking HURTS. Basically, Josephine miraculously managed to show Clarke an image of someone “treating her” as she thinks people treat her. All that by capturing a 10 seconds scene after hours and hours and hours of Bellamy wanting to kill everyone on Sanctum because of what they did to Clarke. It’s manipulation 101 but at that moment, inside her own mindspace, after everything she’s been through, Clarke was too broken to see it. She had faced too much doubt and self-hatred to see how obvious of a manipulation it was. > I’d like also to point out that Bellamy is RIGHT when he says “it what she would have done”- literally, Clarke already DID something similar. Actually, she did what I talked about earlier ^^^^ Remember on s2? And she did it with the man she was in love with, literally, at the point. She accepted the idea of “giving up” on saving Finn, to secure an alliance with Lxa and the Grounders. Bellamy SAW it, Bellamy LIVED it. > And what do we know of that moment? Clarke sacrificed her own “soul”, and mind and peace and happiness (potential, with Finn) to do so. That’s also what Bellamy did. The thing is, Josephine talked to Clarke as if her people had chosen to LIVE with her death. But Bellamy said “now we SURVIVE”. There is a gifset going around showing Clarke’s reaction to Finn’s death and Bellamy’s reaction to Clarke’s death and him making the deal. BOTH of them are showing to survive after what had happened, because it was the thing to do. Not because they wanted it, but in order to make the other’s memory WORTH something (Clarke “if this fails, he died for nothing” and Bellamy’s “we do what Clarke would have wanted”). Thing is, contrary to what Josephine said, Clarke’s people - Bellamy especially - won’t live “happily ever after”. And that was SHOWN on episode 6. There is a meta also somewhere, that I think I reblogged about how the theme of the season is survival vs living. To me, that’s exactly it, and it was especially showed with Josephine’s flashbacks. Her “opposition” with Isaac was relying on that especially: how he wanted to live, and how the Primes are just SURVIVING. I mean... did Josephine marry? Did she have kids? Was she ever happy? Well no! She even lost the dude she was in love with! Their “thirst” of survival made her lose the man she was in love with, and created a whole war among these people! And Bellamy was NOT thinking about living without Clarke. He was thinking about the SURVIVAL of their people. He was making the sacrifice himself, to assure that Clarke’s death wouldn’t be in vain. He sacrificed his own want for revenge, to insure that their people would live; people that Clarke loved, people for whom Clarke “sacrificed” herself on 4x13 or several other times. But as “Monty” himself point out on this episode too, SURVIVING is not what he meant! He didn’t mean to survive despite other people’s crimes, he meant living, and that means, evolving, learning, trying, loving, etc. > Also let’s all remember that the moment, the moment Bellamy saw a whisper of life in Clarke, the deal was OFF. He doesn’t care about the compound anymore, proof being the fact that Russell’s explanations about it were muted from Bellamy’s perspective. He doesn’t care about surviving if he has a chance at LIVING. And damn isn’t it a very very strongly platonic new Bellarke theme huh? So... LIVING for Bellamy is only if Clarke is alive? In-te-rest-ing. He’s ready to throw it all away, be like “fuck sacrifice” just to get Clarke back! And that’s!!!! SO PLATONIC LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!!!!!
