You were on edge. This whole week had been just shitty for you; one too many things gone wrong, one too many inconveniences, one minute too long trapped inside your own head. And you were trying your best as to not let it all blow over as you sat in the passenger seat of Simon's car, picking at your nails.

You were on your way to your parents' house for the holidays, a fresh apple pie sitting warm and pretty on your lap as you try your best to stay out of your head and focus on the present.

He looks over at you, alerted by the way you're silent even though your favorite song is playing on the radio. Usually, you would be enthusiastically singing along, trying to get him to join you (which would more often than not lead to an annoyed, but affectionate grumble from him)

"You alright, love?" He asks softly, bringing a hand up to tuck a stray strand of hair behind your ear. You glance up at him, before nodding with a smile. "Fine, babe. Just had a long day at work."

You knew that you didn't have to hide how you were feeling from him, but, since it was the holidays, you would rather him having fun and bonding with your family than worrying about you. Your parents were expecting you guys to arrive in a joyful mood with bright smiles on your faces fit for the holiday season anyways, so it was best not to let anything dampen the mood.

Simon considers you for a second, before he turns back towards the road with a hum. You're not sure if he buys that excuse or not, but you try not to dwell on it. Instead, you focus your attention on the scenery zooming past you and not the thoughts swimming endlessly through your head.

"You know you don't have to hide anything from me, right?" You turn back to face him, and he's already regarding you with a comforting look in his eye. Even with half his face hidden by a face mask, you can still see his expression so clearly; it's the kind that he only reserves for you, the kind that lets you know that you're safe and loved. The softness in his gaze makes your heart ache, and you briefly consider letting it all come out.

He must notice how your face falters (of course he does, he notices everything), because a second later he's pulling into an empty parking lot. You anxiously rub your neck out of habit, about to protest that you're fine, before he slides a big hand over yours, effectively silencing you.

Commanding you gently to follow him into the backseat, Simon immediately pulls you into an embrace as soon as you get settled. His actions catch you off guard; usually, you're the one initiating hugs. But this time, it's exactly what you need as you feel one of his hands rubbing soothing motions up and down your back.

"You're stressed." He says for you, and you can't help but snort at the way he got it right on the dot.

"Yeah." You breathe into his chest, closing your eyes and letting yourself melt into him. "This whole week...has been so hard and I can't focus on anything." You say softly, feeling tears prick at your eyes at your confession.

Simon hums, still soothing your nerves with his touch. "And you don't want to go to your parents' house either, do you, dove?" You grimace, knowing he's right, but still feeling the need to show up anyways. You seldom ever see your family nowadays, and you feel that you owe it to them to at least visit during the holidays.

"No...but we need to. It's the holidays, after all." You frown up at him, and he runs a hand over the top of your head.

"No, we don't. What you need is to relax, back at home. We can tell your parents we got into a crash or something." He mutters, and you giggle.

"Yeah, and then they can come over and hit you over the head with a frying pan for driving so carelessly." You retort, finally feeling your nerves start to ease up. A soft smile spreads across Simon's face at the sound of your laughter, and he presses a kiss over the top of your head. You bury your face into his chest again, and all of a sudden, you feel like everything's going to be alright again.

autistic ramble about twilight sparkle because i love her sm and shes my fave autistic comfort character !!!

this took a really long time to make, and im really proud of it, so any reblogs/reshares would be appreciated ! especially if you like mlp !!

when people say she isnt autistic, i always find myself very surprised. i think to myself, have these people even watched the show??because yes, while the writers and lauren faust may not have intended for her to be explicitly autistic, she is very clearly portrayed that way, intentional or not. not to mention that lauren faust (creator of friendship is magic) has recently responded to a tweet saying that she thought pinkie pie being adhd was obvious; lauren faust has adhd herself, so its not surprising that so many of the mlp fim characters also posess many of the same traits as her. and i also raise the question; if she thought pinkie pie was obvious as having adhd, then why would twilight be any different?? she is very clearly autistic, but i dont think twilight's obvious neurodivergence has been addressed by lauren yet (unless im wrong of course, but i just haven't found anything about it when ive searched for it).

anywho, to list just a few of twilight's autistic traits:

- trouble socialising and making friends (this is literally the main plot point of the first few seasons and is even still present in the later seasons, so its not like this was just a one time thing). an example of this would be in the very first episode when twinkleshine, lemon hearts, and minuette invite her to moondancer's party; she awkwardly declines, saying that she needs to catch up on her studying instead. to this the other ponies say, "ugh, does that pony do anything except study? i think shes more interested in books than friends"

- she has a very obvious special interest in reading, books, research, and the study of pony magic. she indulges in these interests to such a level where she often loses track of time and stays awake all night, and often misses out on opportunities to socialise with her friends. when she cant indulge in them, she gets upset. this ties into finding comfort in routines, too.

- taking things literally (e.g: that part in "look before you sleep" where she takes rarity's statement about them getting warmer in regards to playing a game literally). look before you sleep is also a great episode showing her need to have everything planned out; in this episode, twilight has her first slumber party, and uses a slumber party planning book as a guide. she thinks has to follow every single instruction in the exact same order, and when rarity and applejack dont oblige, she gets upset.

- HEAVILY relies on schedules and planning. she utilises all kinds of lists; visual lists, written lists, checklists, etc. when she's unable to stick to her routines/plans, she becomes irrationally upset and/or angry, lashes out at other people and can have meltdowns. this is again shown all throughout the show, but is more prominent in the episode "lesson zero".

- LOVES organising, lining things up, and finding visual patterns in all sorts of things. she'll often just do this for fun and as a way to calm down, while others might find this more of a chore. i suppose this can be done as a form of visual stimming? I don't really know what this is called; but i know a lot of autistic people do it. i suppose this could also tie into needing routines and structure, as organising things can help autistic people feel more in control and can provide a sense of stability.

- she can often come off as insensitive or rude without meaning to, and sometimes she struggles with tone as well as being quite blunt. this is most likely due to her misunderstanding or being unable to read typical social cues. this could also perhaps be linked to low empathy, which is something a fair few individuals on the spectrum experience. this is especially true in the earlier seasons, but still shown in the later seasons as well.

- twilight also struggles with regulating her emotions and having meltdowns; this is typically the result of her needs not being properly met and her routines being changed. and when she's not having full blown meltdowns, she can at least be seen being snappy towards her friends when overwhelmed.

- stimming !!! oh boy does she stim a lot. stomping her hooves, jumping up and down, PACING (this is a big one), teleporting spontaneously when overwhelmed, flapping her wings, etc. in fact, twilight once paced so hard for so long that she made a groove in the floor without even realising !! (this was seen in the episode "its about time" - which is also a good episode that showcases her autistic traits)

- shes also sometimes shown struggling with overstimulation; in the third episode of the series, "the ticket master", twilight gets overwhelmed by her friends crowding around her and loudly shouting, resulting in her running off and snapping at them.

- shes often shown struggling with generalised anxiety, which is another common trait of autism.

and the best part is, this is obviously a common occurrence, and her friends fully support her through her struggles !!! her meltdowns, overthinking and anxiety are so frequent, that her friends know exactly what to do and how to help her.

obviously, this isn't every trait, this is just all the surface level stuff !!

i would have included more video and photo examples, but tumblr has a limit on how many you can add to a post :( i hope i still got my point across despite that !!

all in all, i think she's wonderful autistic representation !! even if this wasn't intentional, i still think it's great and love the way her personality and traits were portrayed. the main character of a children's show possessing these traits is awesome and something you don't see too often !! i hope lauren or at least someone on the production team talks about this, because it means a lot to myself and many other autistic people who love mlp <3

▷ You and schlatt enjoy teasing each other as you brainstorm costume ideas. Schlatt might suggest something outrageously silly, like a giant banana, while you counters with a proposal for a matching peanut butter jar… (IYKYK...) After much laughter and playful banter, you’d settle on your quirky and obscure, couple's costume.

▷ Insisting schlatt wears at least one of the multiple flannels you had bought him. After all, he looked like a handsome lumberjack… 🫣

▷ You can't get enough of pumpkin spice, so Schlatt goes along with it, sometimes pretending he hates it. You indulge in pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin pie, and even attempt to make pumpkin spice-flavored dinner dishes. It's all in the name of celebrating the season, even if Schlatt makes sarcastic remarks about it.

▷ Each Halloween, you and Schlatt engage in a pumpkin carving contest—or rather, a race with this boy. When the set time runs out, it's time to reveal your masterpieces. Schlatt's creations never fail to entertain, to say the least.

▷ Being renowned for his bravery and ruggedness, Schlatt insists on visiting a haunted house. Though you weren't particularly fond of haunted houses, you couldn't resist his enthusiasm.

▷ "I'm so nervous," you whispered, clutching Schlatt's arm tightly as you both ventured through the large entrance of the haunted attraction.

"Don't worry, hun. I'm here," he smirked, snaking an arm around your waist before pulling you close.

As you wandered through the park, actors in elaborate costumes often approached you. Yet, their initial enthusiasm would dim once they caught sight of Schlatt's intimidating, stern expression, causing them to rethink any plans of startling you. It was the least he could do, knowing you had reluctantly agreed to go in the first place.

Then came the pivotal moment – the entrance to the haunted house. Your reluctance to enter was palpable, and Schlatt recognized it immediately. With a reassuring squeeze of your hand, he offered a tight-lipped smile, silently letting you know that he was there to protect you.

The haunted house loomed ominously ahead, filled with dark corridors, eerie soundscapes, and costumed actors eager to terrify. Yet, with Schlatt at your side, you found a newfound sense of confidence. As you stepped across the threshold into the chilling unknown, you knew that you had a loyal protector by your side, determined to make this spine-tingling adventure as enjoyable as possible.

"Wow, that was actually really fun!" you admitted, walking hand in hand out of the haunted amusement park.

"I told ya, toots. I'm always here," he grinned, kissing your cheek.

▷ To cap off each October day, the two of you curl up in bed and listen to a scary story podcast. Schlatt jokingly dismisses the stories as "not scary enough," all the while discreetly clinging onto your torso.

▷ As autumn brings its cooling effect, you find yourself "stealing" Schlatt's hoodies more than usual. Once he takes note of this, he definitely starts buying more hoodies, making sure there's always an extra one for you to take.

▷ Once Halloween night comes to a close, the two of you curl up together on the couch, exchanging candies and stories about your Halloween adventures. Schlatt might jokingly complain about your "stealing" all the best treats, leading to adorable candy-sharing moments and sweet smiles.

▷ As the nighttime slowly starts bleeding into daylight you both decided it was time for bed.

“Cmon, get up lazy bones.” Schlatt grumbles, stretching his arms as he got off the couch.

“Mm no. I’m too comfy. “

With a playful sigh, schlatt gingerly scooped you up in his arms. “Alright sleepy, et’s get you to bed.” Contently you rested your head on his shoulder as he gently carried you to your shared bedroom.

Once in your bedroom, Schlatt gently placed you down before lying beside you. Instinctively, he wrapped his arm around your waist, pulling you close to his chest.

I have a rant regarding Usopp in the live action, one thing I noticed (and infuriated me) is the many many new fans that inmediatly "clocked" Usopp as the Straight Character™ and are therefore like "well I don't care about straight characters, so im going to ignore him, teehee" and AHHHH FIRST OF ALL IF YOU KNEW THE BISEXUAL VIBES THIS MAN EXUDES, and I don't even want to blame the Kaya kiss because it was cute and they're lovely together 😭 (tho I also see the pattern of which Character the Fandom decides are Straight™ and therefore ignored...)

But I also feel like maybe the Live Action didnt really give Usopp enough moments to shine, here's hoping for more (San)Usopp moments in the second season, they really underuse him in the first one

Okay, first of all, if you think Usopp is straight you're definitely reading his character wrong because look at him. Just look at him.

Yeah, no. This guy doesn't care about gender in the slightest.

And people assuming a guy is straight because he,,, Has a girlfriend,,, Wow,,, A bisexual man who kisses a woman,,, Who would've thought that bisexual people could fall in love with anyone,,, As if that wasn't the literal fucking definition of bisexual. And you could also headcanon him as gay or any other sexuality! Why does he have to be the straight character for having a girlfriend in canon? You can do whatever the fuck you want with it. Fuck canon. People make my blood boil. Also, the whole "I don't care about straight characters" thing is something SO common and it makes me so angry because-- First of all, who said he's straight? He's a fictional character, do whatever the fuck you want with him. And second, it's alright to like specifically queer characters because they give you comfort and representation, but instantly ignoring a character just because they are not queer? Uh. Like, I understand, but it gives me the ick. It's just weird. Off-putting. Because there's a thin line between focusing on the characters you think are queer for comfort and reducing them only to their sexuality and ignoring everything that matters in the show. But you know? I don't think that's exactly the issue here and we both know what it is. Like. Between you and me, anon, we both know.

I am white by the way and I'm not used to analyzing black characters in terms of how the fandom views them and stuff, but isn't it quite curious how Usopp is always the ignored character from the East Blue Crew, and he's often used as a comedy relief in OPLA? "He has a girlfriend and he's straight so we don't care abou-" Sanji has flirted with Nami. Visibly. In front of your fucking screen. And you don't say that about him. Or any other character, really. That's just an excuse and we know and everyone knows and you don't have to analyze shit to know this because it's obvious. And if somebody comes at me saying "oh! But it's just because his personality is softer and he's a coward and most people hate that in shonens so he's a boring character" I am going to fucking combust because everyone knows that if Usopp were white EVERYBODY would be calling him a baby boy and a soft boy and a cutie pie and he'd be one of the favorites (cofcof Koby cofcof) (<- I love him too btw but you know what I mean).

That being said, OPLA doesn't even give Usopp enough screen time to be a character because his personality there is used to crack a few jokes and have THE romance in the show. That's it. He's the comedy relief character and the one who gets the girl because Netflix would cancel the show first before not doing any romance. God forbid people read between the lines, oh my God (<- I love Usokaya and everyone knows btw I am not complaining I cried when they kissed. I'm just saying that that's quite literally all he does. But Usokaya my beloved).

His OWN arc in OPLA is stolen by the screentime used for the Marines and Luffy is the one doing the work. They don't let Usopp follow through with what he actually does in the manga and it's very frustrating not being able to see him shine IN HIS OWN ARC. They barely give him any important scenes in comparison to the other characters. It's incredibly infuriating. See? I am now infuriated.

And now a lot of people watching OPLA have said they prefer OPLA Usopp rather than Manga!Anime!Usopp or that the live-action has made them like him better. I don't know what bothers me the most, really. People literally don't care about the characters, they just want them if they're hot. Which, by the way, it's insulting because if you don't find Manga!Anime!Usopp hot ?????? Please, go to the ophthalmologist because I think you need glasses.

I really hope we get more Usopp moments (hehe and Sanuso moments. My beloveds. They got their four cute short scenes in OPLA and I was the happiest person alive) next season because otherwise, I am going to fucking lose it.

Hello, as the days count down and the Bad Batch finale draws closer, may I show to the fine folks of tumblr my first Star Wars OC in 20 years, created thanks to this show? 😃

there's, uh, a big mess of words under the image because I wanted to put into words the importance this show has for me, and I am bad at doing so.

I want to get some thoughts off my chest, because I have no one in my day-to-day life who cares about the animated Star Wars shows, and especially the Bad Batch. (well, other than my mom, but I don't want to bore her with my rambling too much. she already banned star wars from me once, i won't let that happen again lol)

I can't stop thinking how much I don't want Bad Batch to end.

This show has been so dear to me. I can't remember the last time I've loved something this much.

Before the second season started, I had an artistic block that had lasted way too long. Anything I drew or wrote, mostly turned out a horrible mess after staring at a blank page for hours and hours, if I ever managed to create anything at all. For someone who tends to draw whenever their hands aren't otherwise busy (aka all the damn time), such a block weighed down on my mental health.

Well, then season two happened, and full-on gave me back my love for Star Wars, a love that had somewhat gone out over the last few years. Then, Plan 99 happened, and broke me because again my favorite character "died" (I'm in team Tech lives until I draw my last breath or until proven correct. That chocolate-eyed cutie-pie is alive nothing will convince me otherwise). Pretty much after finishing the episode and staring at a wall for another 30 minutes, I said "nope" and began writing.

I wrote for hours. I believe it's been well over a decade since I last wrote fanfiction, but here I was, creating a Star Wars oc, something I'd last done as a ten-year-old. And now, roughly a year later, I think I've written over a hundred pages of (very self-indulgent) fanfiction with the Batch, and with my oc that I've come to love.

And drawing, oh boy, have I been drawing!

(... Sure, I've mostly been drawing Tech, over and over again, to a point I once actually considered lying and saying "yeah that's my boyfriend haha!" to a man at my job last summer, when asked who it was that I was drawing for maybe fifth day in a row 😂 likely would've been a more acceptable excuse for someone my age. But, I mean... I just really love drawing him, not only because he is my favorite character of maybe all time, but because he is just so fun to draw! And most of all, at least I draw again!)

And it is all thanks to this wonderful show about a bunch of defective and effective copy-paste boys and their sister.

It's probably something many say, but I've always felt like a bit of an outsider. I've felt like I have no place; when I was a kid, my interests were very different from the other kids of [gender assigned at birth], and trying to play with them while inserting my own interests into the games, often didn't go so well. I was... kind of an odd child (although now, older and questionably wiser, knowing that I might actually be autistic, many things make more sense now. me kind of discovering this about myself is also partially thanks to Bad Batch)

Also, growing up trans/non-binary, while not even knowing what that is or having a word for it, didn't really do much to help with the feeling of "I'm different and an outsider because of it". Perhaps it was one more reason I fell in love with Clone Force 99, because I could see some of myself in them. Being different from the "regs".

I love this show, and these fictional people have become my family, and I am not ready to say goodbye to them.

The L Word: Faerûn, Part 3: The Chart, Pre-Canon

Previous part.

Having explained the overall premise and basically who "Alekto" is, it's time for the real meat of The L Word: Faerûn which is who's fucking who and when and why.

Thus, in more or less chronolgoical order, the pre-canon (pink lines) relationships/hookups/drama is as follows...

(over 100 years ago) Isobel and Aylin meet, piss off Isobels' dad, and lose each other, exactly as occurs in canon. Similarly, Jaheira lost Khalid as in canon.

(? years ago because these are just for seasoning and timing doesn't really matter) Helsik and her #1 rival/frenemy/LOHL Korilla have been on and off forever. They don't know they're desperately in love. Helsik has definitely also ~encountered~ Harleep and Mizora is too nosy and obnoxious to have never crossed paths with Harleep, and crossing paths with Harleep seems to mainly mean one (1) thing.

(c. ~30 years ago to ongoing) The long, rocky relationship between Alekto and Florrick was laid out already in the previous segment, since it explains much of the backstory for the entire TLW:F concept.

Alekto, Florrick, and Naoise Nallinto are also connected as part of a polycule. Alekto is more or less monogamous, but flexible enough for a well-definied poly relationship if desired by her partner. Florrick is definitively poly, and she and Naoise have been involved consistently for quite some time, including during Florrick and Alekto's relationship. Driven by their connection as city-dwelling wood elves, they find each other grounding and enjoy spending time together, but aren't compatible enough to be very serious. Florrick and Naoise remain involved with one another, even though Alekto split away some 10 years pre-canon. Alekto and Naoise had little in common, so they rarely spent time together without Florrick, but consider each other acquaintances up to the present day.

(c. ~30years ago to just before canon). Shadowheart and Nocturne were long-term sweethearts, each other's rock in the harrowing environment of the cloister, although if asked, either would downplay their feelings for each other in accordance with their lady's teachings. They never really broke up, but rather were on-and-off due to Shadowheart's sessions with the Mirror of Loss and having to often rebuild their not-a-relationship from scratch. Due to this, the eternal denial of their true feelings for each other, and the overall culture of sexuality in the cloister, they both often were involved with other members of the cloister (represented as Mirie on the chart but could be really anyone/multiple people) both individually and also there were definitely orgies.

(~20 years-5 years ago) Florrick and Nine-Fingers Keene also had a rivals-and-lovers situationship going, as a gung-ho younger Florrick hoped to make a name for herself in the Flaming Fist by taking down the rising star of the criminal guild, but things got sexy and dramatic fast. It has been several years since they last slept together, but the sexual tension endures. (For what it's worth, I think Nine-Fingers is in her mid-forties as of 1492.)

(~13 or so years ago). Teenage Hoodlums Karlach and Skoona were a casual, infrequent thing before Karlach went under Gortash's wing.

(~10 to 1ish years ago) After Gortash betrayed Karlach, she found some kind of fun, comfort, companionship (against her better judgement) in Flo the Garotter. Karlach would never admit they were ~together~ at all let alone for that long, but if you look at the facts, they don't lie.

Now look at Allandra Grey and tell me that woman is not running some kind of racket out of that temple!! Obviously Nine-Fingers would have a finger in that pie, and a finger in other things if you know what I mean. The city could NOT handle them together, it's like how the horses in Macbeth start eating each other to signify a rift in the natural order. Umberlee probably drowned a lot of people over it. Of course (not pictured) the Polycule From Hell that is Nine-Fingers' Ladies and the Umberlee cultists is alive and (not) well.

Now in the peri-canon realm (within the 1 year prior to), we got a lot going on in the Harper Corner:

Jaheira and Nine-Fingers have had a little casual thing going on for several years, nothing serious; Jaheira doesn't want a new one and only because she already had her one and only. They have some fun, they share information, they pick this thing back up in a couple months.

Now with the Harpers, Jaheira isn't out looking for anything, but you know when you're working so closely with people, and the stakes are so high, and the nights are so cold... shit just kinda starts happening. So Talli and Jaheira developed a bit of a thing while working together to mobilize the Harpers to go to the shadow-cursed land and take on Ketheric. Talli's a good gal, salt of the earth, humble, hard-working; she's ready to settle down but Jaheira is so far beyond settling down that it's just... not a good situation for either of them. Feelings hurt, Talli rebounds with Lassandra and that's really fine, but they just didn't have enough in common to build the kind of relationship either of them want, but they made for good bedfellows while it lasted.

Meanwhile, at one point Jaheira and Isobel get drunk, start reminiscing about their lost loves, and have sex. It WOULD be a secret they both take to their grave if literally everyone didn't know about it.

In the tiefling region, sorry but Lakrissa has bag-fumbler written all over her!! Of course she and Alfira flirt, but Lakrissa fails repeatedly to seal the deal and you know Alfira doesn't make the first move (hence why they have no pre-canon connection). (Also Alfira was desperately in love with Lihala in the most hopeless, idol worship crush way, but this was 100% one-sided so not on the chart). It also doesn't help that Lakrissa's ex-teenage-sweetheart from Elturel, Xeph, is also in their caravan. Xeph dumped Lakrissa because Lakrissa wouldn't get serious about her, a mistake Lakrissa claims she will never make again, but... bag-fumbler. Lakrissa also has some bouts of low self-esteem and since her post in the grove overlooks Aradin's crew camp, I imagine she got into a little something with Remira even though Remira, like Aradin, is a piece of shit (but she is also hot, so).

Lastly, we of course have the Minthara-Orin thing which is honestly not my cup of tea whatsoever, but exists and is thus on the chart. Just because I wanted her on the chart, I feel like Minthara and Roah Moonglow have banged at least once in the goblin camp since Minthra would need to blow off some steam with someone hot and also clean.

And of course Z'rell needed to be on the chart, so the question was, who could handle her? The answer was obviously Araj, whose unflinching craziness yet delusional serenity would be a fun and equal match to Z'rell's intensity. They smashed like 2-3 times in Moonrise.

for seriously, though, Donatello does seem to deal with a sort of ambiguous grief about his pre-mutation life, maybe more so grief for what his current life isn't than what his old life was, bit still. When it gets to the eps that are dealing with that it really resonates with him. For the like seven or however many seasons before that, he's just focused on how useful she is, how often right, how strong as well. He's like 'she's so talented, just like me :)'. Her bluntness is also relatable for him

Michelangelo I think would also love Fluttershy. She takes care of the animals, he could watch a whole nine seasons about just her doing that. He's really invested in Twilight's arc, too, and Rainbow Dash grows on him, but Fluttershy is forever his favorite. Plus, him and Leonardo can get each other excited about it which makes it more fun for both of them!

January 23rd is National Pie day.

Is it really a year since I last posted on this? Last year I took us on a journey of our Nations favourite, The Scotch Pie, everyone has their go to Butchers or even Bakers for theirs. The Killie Pie is legendary, The Macaroni Pie is another legend, you can still get this elsewhere, but Greggs discontinued their version in 2015. The  Mince Tattie and Baked Bean Pie was always a favourite of mine growing up, our local bakers did a great job of this, sadly the bakers is no more. And this time of year you can find Bells Steak and Haggis usually on offer at the supermarkets throughout Scotland, especially for Burns Night, which is only a couple days away.

Anyway this year I want to concentrate on the Steak Pie.

Us Scots love a steak pie to celebrate the New Year and cannot get enough of them, according to industry experts. But why has it become an annual tradition across the country?

One theory holds that steak pie became the national dish at New Years because January 1 wasn’t generally taken as a holiday so families were too busy to cook.

They would buy steak pies to feed their families instead, this continues to this day as people want a delicious meal after the previous night’s celebrations. So you could say it was essentially one of the first ready meals.

Or is it that the Steak pie is the nation’s hangover cure on what is often the roughest morning of the year for many, after a night of celebratory drinking?

Another theory is that because it is a big meal you can keep warm and serve to visitors throughout the day, as people come to the house. I don't buy into that one, we Scots always put on a spread on the table, Shortbread, Black Bun, even Dundee Cake was waiting for any first footers and others coming through the door in the wee sma' hours.

In days gone by oor mammies used to cook their own steak pies. so here's a recipe for a traditional Scottish steak pie, as seen in the main pic.

Things you’ll need to make a Scottish Steak Pie

Large Pot/Pan

Mixing Bowl

Pie Dish.

Ingredients

800g Diced Beef Stewing Steak (Approx 2lb)

2 tbsp Plain Flour

2 tbsp Olive Oil/Butter

2 Large Roughly Chopped Onions

500ml Beef Stock (Approx 2 cups)

35ml Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce, Pronounced – Wooster-sher ( Approx 0.14 cups)

1 tbsp Tomato Puree

1 tsp Dijon Mustard

Salt and Pepper to taste.

Now my mum always cheated buy buying ready made Puff Pastr, but you can make your own.

Add ons

Many Scots swear by a Steak and Sausage pie, rather than just steak alone. We don’t mind adding sausages also, but personally like to have just steak most of the time. However, this recipe is easy to adapt if you want to! We’ll share more in variations below, but you can add 4-6 sausages if you like as well.

ake your mixing bowl and toss the beef in the plain flour, this will help insulate the meat while browning as well as helping the sauce to thicken. You can season the flour to help add an extra depth of flavour if you’d like.

Heat your pan and oil/butter, once hot add the onions and cook until soft.

Once the onions are soft add the beef to brown it, this should only take a few minutes.

This process of browning simply means to lightly cook the surface of the steak to caramelize it and add a richer flavour to the meat.

Once browned add the stock, Worcester Sauce, Tomato puree, Dijon mustard and seasoning.

Bring the mixture slowly to the boil.

Once it begins to boil reduce the heat and allow to gently simmer for 2.5 hrs.

During this time stir occasionally and, if you have a gas stove that doesn’t have a low enough setting to simmer keep rotating the pan to avoid too much heat in one place.

If you’re adding sausages (see variations) then you can chop and add them about halfway through cooking. If they have a high fat content you may want to fry off in a separate pan or even boil for 10 minutes to remove some of the fat so that the pie won’t get too greasy.

Once the sauce is good and thick and the meat is breaking apart nicely tip the mixture into the pie dish, it should be roughly 3/4 full.

Preheat your oven to 180°C or 356°F, approx gas mark 4.

Cover the top of the pie dish with the rolled puff pastry, use your thumb or a fork to push down or crimp the edge of the pastry along the rim of the dish, helping to seal the mixture and the flavour in.

Make a hole in the centre of the pie to allow steam to exit during cooking.

Place your pie into the preheated oven for roughly 30 mins or until the pastry has risen and is golden brown.

Reading this fic that touches quite often on the theme of "getting what you deserve" and how Dean has never believed himself worthy of any positive thing (being saved, being loved). Dean thinking his ending was always going to be bloody and that an apple pie life was never meant for him. He doesn't deserve it. Or so he says. But then season 2 episode 20, with the alternate reality dream that the djinn shows him and realized that, is not just low self-worth that he has, but also thinks he is paying penance for being selfish. For wanting too much. Because how dare Dean wish for a happy life not only for him but everyone else? He can't have both right, that's the point? He is asking too much of the universe. Either those people are saved or he is. That's why he doesn't deserve to be saved. His salvation is the world's doom. "You don't think you deserve to be saved," and why would he? Last time, he saw a world where he didn't suffer a lot of people were dead by the things he hunted in the dark. To maintain the world order, Dean must suffer so that people can live. Every day, he wakes up and offers himself as a sacrifice for other's salvation. Which makes it even more fucked up when he has those suicide attempts because it means he thinks he really has nothing else to give. Idk, maybe I'm just projecting but like that episode really fucked me over. Cause what do you mean I can never truly get what I want? That this being who traps people in their perfect dreams could only conjure up a reality that met 5% of my wants? Am I really asking for too much? When I say I want a family alive and well, am I asking for too much? You saw my subconscious and couldn't foster up an image of someone I once loved to make them my partner? Is that what you saw in my brain or what I see of me?

Tf2 mercs + birthdays hc:

I don't Scout likes birthday parties. Mostly because they bring up bitter memories of deflated balloons and empty chairs: how he was stuck in a beat-up birthday hat with nobody else around, all at work or in jail or in a fistfight, waiting for a man he never knew to come up and celebrate with him. He for sure had faith his dad would eventually show up. Eventually I think he stopped caring about birthdays--or acting like he cared--and left the celebratory events to someone else.

Demo has mixed feelings on them. On one hand, opportunity to get wasted + have fun + party + good food. On the other, his birthday parties were always. Tense. Very overbearing parents and all that--made it a little hard to enjoy his presents when it felt like there were strings attached. Overall, the sentiment is positive. Some of his better memories came from big DeGroot birthday celebrations, full Scottish style.

Engie doesn't really…Have any I don't think? In my min his family celebrated them much--he doesn't strike me as the kind of person to care much about birthdays.

Heavy loves them! They remind him of his family and his sisters. He's an acts-of-service kinda person, so he'd often decorate their cabin when birthday season ran around. Sometimes his ma would scrape enough food by to make some banger piroshki. He treasures the warm memories he has of his birthday. Sniper is in a similar vein as Scout: bitter! Especially post comics Sniper. Birthdays molded from a small celebratory event and a good slice of pie to a harsh reminder of what he lost. A reminder of the people he lost all for a bunch of useless fucking rocks. I think he's not a big guy for grand gestures anyway, so when his birthday rolls around (if he even remembers it) he doesn't do much other than call home to a phone that'll never pick up.

Medic likes celebrations and tends to go all out. Okay, yes, he is being dramatic, but his general philosophy live life to the fullest and cuss out anyone who doesn't like it. In my mind he has a thing for birthday steak, not cake: probably from the whole being the kid of a butcher thing.

Spy has a very. odd stance on birthday parties. She never got any, I don't think--old money family and all that--and the loneliness which came from her birthday isn't something she's fond of. That being said, he's got the energy of someone who would like birthday parties. In a very odd way. Spy is the best at giving people well-matched gifts and, on occasion, some scrapbook pages. Don't ask how he knows that or where she got that picture. For you own health, just. Don't.

flightfoot, if you want a break from Miraculous Ladybug fandom drama, here's something to make you laugh: did you know that Weird Al Yankovic canonically "did it" with Pinkie Pie from Friendship is Magic (or at least his pony-sona did)? Yes, I'm serious. He played a character named Cheese Sandwich, a "party pony" like Pinkie, and while they had a rocky start, they eventually hit it off, and even have a foal in the finale. Weird Al even joked while signing a fan's artwork, "I stole your waifu!"

I'm very familiar with Cheese Sandwich, I started watching MLP: FiM in season 1, and continued until the end (though I did start skipping episodes around season 6 I think). I also read a CRAPTON of MLP fanfiction, they have some of the best around, and have the most fanfics of any Western Cartoon, though the vast majority of those are on the fandom-specific website Fimfiction.net, which is why you don't see a ton of them on the main fanfic websites.

Anyway, I loved Cheese Sandwich, and episodes with him were often the best Pinkie Pie episodes! Pinkie-centric episodes were often very hit-or-miss, since she could be portrayed as so childish and oblivious that it got annoying, especially the times when she ends up hurting other ponies accidentally, and the show didn't have her learn a lesson from that. But they could also be really good, like in Cheese Sandwich's introductory episode, when the show really went into Pinkie's whole party-throwing philosophy, and had her be more concerned with Rainbow Dash being happy than being the best. The ending to that episode was also one of the sweetest in the show!

1. Favourite season?

Firith.

2. Favourite food?

Apple pie.

3. Favourite plant or herb?

Dandelions.

4. Favourite person/being?

Probably Glorfindel, in the same way that something that's been your favourite for a long time will always be your fave no matter how many shint new toys you get distracted by, but also he loves all his children so much as well, and if asked, he would say he could never choose between all of them.

5. Favourite place?

In the arms of those he loves, or by the hearth on a cold winter night, with a blanket and a warm drink, surrounded by his family.

6. Favourite animal?

His specific favourite is probably Asfaloth. As he doesn't have his own, he does frequently assist Glorfindel with his care. He is grateful to Asfaloth for bringing Glorfindel home.

In terms of which type of animal, I'm not certain he has a favourite. He likes to feed wildlife around the cottage, but doesn't keep any pets for himself.

7. Favourite drink?

He enjoys a good cold tea with lemon.

8. Favourite hobby/activity?

He certainly finds his way to the library very often and enjoys reading and writing in equal parts, as well as he enjoys improving on or learning new skills in general. That said, I don't think he has a single favourite hobby, more so that he seeks -- in any activity -- a sense of peace or joy or fulfillment.

9. Do they like to read? If so, favourite genre?

He reads all the time. Most would believe his favourite genre to be history, as he is so knowledgeable about the subject, but most also fail to realize that this is mostly because he was present for a lot of major events and the first-hand experience makes it easy to remember.

Instead he prefers texts on language as he's always found them to be a fascinating look at different people and cultures, as well as being educational in nature.

However, those who really know him know that he prefers poetry above all, as he enjoys the fullness of emotions that only poetry brings him. He's especially fond of romantic poetry, and poems about longing in general, as even after the return of his other half, he longs for him constantly -- for his presence, his laugh, the feeling of his arms around him...

10. Do they like to dance?

He likes to dance, but not in public. He especially likes to dance under starlight or in front of the hearth with his lover.

11. What is their favourite room in the house?

Definitely the living room. He enjoys the warmth it brings, and the way people naturally gravitate towards each other while sitting in front of a fire.

12. Favourite place to travel to?

Although mostly travelled-out after all the wandering of his youth, Erestor enjoys visiting Lothlórien from time to time, and sometimes insists on accompanying Elrond and Celebrían's children himself as a poorly veiled excuse to revisit Galadriel and Celeborn.

13. Who is their best friend?

I don't know that I've ever considered Erestor having a best friend, rather he has family and he has acquaintances. The closest person to him would be Glorfindel, though prior to his return that might have been Galadriel or Elrond.

14. Favourite bioregion?

He's very comfortable in Rivendell, but sometimes he misses Gondolin and its snowy winters and temperate summers. He does know he's not a fan of the warmer weather in Gondor, nor the humidity of Lindon in general.

"Yes! Quite a few actually, there's always something to do on the farm. My favorite hobby is baking, especially when all the fruits and berries finally come into season! Not only do I use them in baking but I also make a collection of jams and jellies!"

Why I like them: Well, for one thing, he's hysterical, but he's also a genuinely friendly guy who rarely means anyone any harm (even if he causes problems for others out of stupidity, his intentions are always good).

One thing I don't like about them: There are a couple episodes of the post-first movie seasons where he's turned into a completely oblivious idiot. It feels very jarring.

A headcanon I have for them: I think the random moments where he's acting meaner than usual are actually the result of resentment towards the other characters - when you come down to it, he's been treated pretty lousily by them multiple times (the second movie, "Whatever Happened to SpongeBob", "Gone"). He probably just likes to forgive and forget, but every so often the lid blows off and he lashes out at the people who've hurt him.

Also, I believe that at least SOME of the episodes released after the first movie (mainly the ones with Plankton and/or the Krusty Krab) take place before it. I know the show doesn't have much in the way of continuity, but I refuse to believe that all of SpongeBob's hard work in the movie and Plankton's comeuppance were for nothing.
