Underrated aspect of NPMD that really captured me is the kids and the relationships they have with their parents

We already knew Mayor Solomon Lauter was a bad dad from Abstinence Camp, so his behavior here was nothing per se, but... Wow, he really truly doesn't care at all for Steph, huh? "Damn you soul to five eldritch abominations, I'm not messing with them again!" he basically says to his teen daughter before getting demolished by a ghost. Again? Never did I think I wanted to learn more about that nasty man before, but... Now I am intrigued.

Grace's parents make me so fucking uncomfortable the way they speak to each other tbh, but also in terms of their relationship to her? Yeah I fucking see where she's coming from now, her parents are so controlling and stifling that it's no wonder she gets a little bit of power and goes insane!

Pete and Ted's dad sells ladies shoes and? I think that's all we ever get about their parents iirc, but we do know that they were both sent to Camp Idontwannabang and despite both of them being weird, they also seem to me like they might just have the overall most loving and normal parents. We know Ted's personality changed over time, and he and Pete seem to have an overall positive relationship as far as I could tell, but it's not like? Foster's level of caring for one another in their parents stead and the fact that we never hear anything BAD about their parents make me think that they just aren't very remarkable, so like? Good for them honestly

Ruth??? Oh my god Ruth is so lonely and starved for love and affection I cannot imagine a world in which she has loving parents, she mentions talking to fucking telemarketers all the time but never once talks about her family and honestly??? That kinda says it all for me, Ruth seems to be in a very unloving home and I'm so sad for her- her focus on broken families in The Barbecue Monolgues feels like it's also indicative of her personal life tbh, poor girl!! I'm glad she has Richie and Pete, she's weird af but so are they and they make it work!

Richie says nothing about his family either so I'm just gonna. Headcanon him having like, a normal family who thinks he's a bit weird but loves him all the same and doesn't like, try and stop him from living his life because that's the kinda environment his very open love of anime seems to imply to me

And finally... Oh my god, Max... Yeah his dad is 100% abusive. Him being afraid of going back home even when he's frightened of ghosts and skeletons, the way he loiters around public places after school looking to take out his own frustration on others... His bullying and abuse seems like learned behavior and I actually feel so bad for him, he's a complete dick but he's also not wrong about the way literally nobody cares about him once he dies. Is it weird that I feel like the school is seriously failing him by brushing off his behavior rather than checking on his life situation of trying to find where it's coming from? Like, I get it, he's the star quarterback, they don't wanna mess with him or something (I'm not gonna even pretend to know how American high schools seem to work, the whole school environment before he dies is completely foreign to me) but??? Surely letting him just run wild like that would raise SOME alarm bells in someone's head that there's something wrong in his life???? I had forgotten how unexpected and jumpscare-y the first time Nadia dies is.

RUTH MY DARLING. HOW I MISSED YOU.

I could be at the best party of my life, surrounded by the people I love and who love me, and yet I would spiral into a sadness dissociation. Nadia is just like me fr. (I know the trauma was very recent but you get what I'm saying)

It's actually so much interesting to see the people around Nadia slowly lose their sentience as the universe continues collapsing their reality. A great example of it is Maxine. Love that she still thinks it's the drugs and not just the misfortune of being the victims of universe's educating spree.

My favourite thing about Nadia, as a protagonist, is that she's not a saint, she's not likeable all the time. She has a lot of fuck ups, even if she's suffering at the whims of the universe. The way Nadia is slowly being consumed by the grief of this reality of hers. Seeing John have his heartbroken again and again. It's just. Your grief just doesn't affect you, it affects everyone, it consumes everything around you. (I wish I could articulate my thoughts and feelings better. I struggle to even form coherent sentences these days)

"You created an impossible game with a single character who has to solve everything entirely on her own. That's stupid." "Watch and learn, baby face." This is what we call foreshadowing.

It's about community and love and connections. And how we as social beings need other people to survive and thrive and be safe. In every way, the physical, emotional, we need people. We cannot be loners. That's not a viable way of living. The moral of the story is let others help you, believe that the world is a better place because you're in it.

Not just that but a sub plot (the building block to the major plot in S2) that no matter how much you suppress your inner child, no matter how much you try to forget them, they're still within you. You cannot take care of your present self or improve things for your future self until you acknowledge the child.

It's just, how beautifully it is shown the importance of human connection, loving and caring for others, why it is the utmost responsibility as humans to keep each other safe and well. Humans didn't come all this way without that love and compassion, and this recent trend of hyper-individuality has really fucked us over.

I never show my other ocs because they’re way less “complex” (I don’t share much Ruth background but she’s a well built character in my mind, phone notes and in Maria’s chat box lmfao. still a huge wip but I like discovering things about her I just like to flow and just come up with things that make sense instead of sitting and writing in a blank sheet) but I don’t think any of my ocs are very relatable for me so far except for little hobbies they have, or sense of humor or minimal details like these. nothing big or personality defining traits that I can go “oh yeah she’s just like me fr” maybe ruth and I share not being able to lie because we’ll always choose coming out as mean but telling the truth instead of trying to mask the real thing to please someone in let’s say a “tense conversation” context with someone we don’t particularly like/agree with

oh, yeah, I totally get that and I definitely understand why it resonates with you. I think they did a really good job showing the tensions between ruth and lee, and I would've loved to have seen that explored some more. and I'm really glad the film was something you were able to connect with like that, though I definitely understand the pain and pressure that comes from an overprotective or overly invested parent. I was raised in a Muslim family, and I'm quite lapsed from it now, but my mom still constantly asks me to pray and tries to pressure and guilt-trip me into it. just the other day, she essentially ordered me to do one prayer a day, not even asking me if it's what I want, and that gave me such a helpless feeling. I remember watching the film, and thinking I could definitely relate to lee trying to rush the end of the call when her mom asks if she's still praying JDKSDJS because I, too, will literally laugh it off with my mom and try to switch the topic super fast 😭

NO FR like, it made me actually bugged that people felt like just because lee didn't perform or engage with society's narrow, specifically set of standards designated for social interactions, she must be rude or not care for ruby, like 😭 I really don't like that, since it essentially pushes this narrative that if someone doesn't mask and doesn't perform society's "rules," they must be behaving rudely or angrily, which ofc is not true. and omg please, let's talk about it more!! after seeing longlegs, I immediately searched up that night if anyone else thought lee was on the spectrum, and I was so glad to see other people identifying with her. like, you're spot on, I remember seeing how she interacted with agent carter (also omg I loved him sm) and agent browning, and being so happy to see a neurodivergent character in a horror film. and for sure, I thought her accepting the invitation was def a sign she was open to seeing ruby again!!

omg right, I'm seriously hoping they release the alternate ending. I know some people said in the credits, there was an actress whose role was "Adult Ruby," and honestly, I'd love to see an ending that shows how ruby has been impacted by the events of the film + if her and lee are still in touch. and same, i really would've loved the film to be longer, or to have it turned into a series ;-; my main complaint of the film was that things weren't fleshed out enough, and I feel like a series would've done a brilliant job at expanding certain elements. plus it gives more lee harker content 💗_💗 HAHA

augh that sounds rough, i totally understand where you’re coming from ;-; i haven’t been a practicing catholic in quite some time, but a lot of that thinking has been ingrained into my behavior, so it’s taken a lot of work to undo it. some of my family outside my mom are still very much in it (and wish i was), so i try to avoid religious talk with them, but oh man. i feel “trying very hard to switch topics when talking to my mom” A Lot. i love her ofc, but sometimes the way she acts feels like more of a guilt trip than a conversation, and forget about disagreeing with her!

anyway - yeah🤨 it’s interesting that some people are drawing that conclusion with lee when your typical detective procedural protagonist (mostly played by men. interesting) has those same antisocial qualities, they’re beloved.

and oh?? i must’ve missed that…gives me another reason to watch the movie again lmao

but yeah😔 sadly movies only have so much time with the characters and their world. i know i definitely would’ve liked to spend more time in longlegs’ universe
