since we all appear to be talking about izzy 'calling the police' on stede id like to offer my silly little two cents:
its not like the navy wasn't actively looking for him anyway??????
at most, izzys actions sped up badminton catching up with stede, but its made very clear that badminton wanted Stede dead well before this, and was willing to use whatever he could to find him- whos to say jackie wouldnt have cut a deal on her own? that any other pirate thats seen them being unsubtle in a port wouldn't take the opportunity to make a quick buck over a guy who is Nobody and holds no influence that could lead to any consequences for them?
in reality izzy is probably the only person who would receive negative repercussions to selling out stede, given his personal connection with ed- any other pirate would probably have gotten away unscathed, anonymous. they likely wouldnt have even been present like izzy was. izzy had personal stakes, anyone else would have taken the money and ran
the way i see it, with or without izzy the events of episode 10 probably would have happened in some degree, izzy just expedited the timeline

Pretty boring take on the whole deal between Izzy, Spanish Jackie, and Badminton to me is when people kind of imply it was an above board arrest of pirates on the Navy side.
Like - ok, first, I do have completely genuine and serious thoughts about the whole thing I alluded to here where Chauncey is acting as a person who wants revenge and not an agent of the empire and that accidentally screws him over on a narrative level (in a different way than being the empire would) by allowing everyone around to be people too. But beyond that...
This isn't a real arrest! It's a bunch of dirty cops doing an off the record meeting with mobsters in a warehouse! There's lots of fandom discussion on Izzy's deal with the devil but Chauncey did the same thing! Not much of a bitter deal for him if the extent of his sacrifice was having to enter Jackie's bar.
No, Chauncey is not operating with the full control of the situation and enforced power of the British Empire, and you can tell.
I mean, The Plan - prior to Edward and the Act of Grace - was for Chauncey to sail over, make a big show of arresting and interrogating all these pirates to confirm what he already knew (that Stede killed his brother), hold a sham trial to tell Stede dramatically that he was going to die, kill Stede, and then leave all the other pirates and the ship with Izzy, Ivan, and Fang entirely free to go about their business. (Like, they do this. No one on Stede's crew is even bound during the episode and none of them need an Act of Grace.) Izzy can be dumb sometimes, but it would be entirely new monumental levels of stupid to have no guarantees that this was going to happen beyond an Admiral's pinky promise, and even stupider on Chauncey's part not to immediately renege on this deal and arrest / kill every pirate on the ship. Unless he couldn't. And it becomes really fucking obvious that he couldn't once Edward gets caught too.
(If I'm going to speculate, that's probably what Spanish Jackie is bringing to this deal. She's negotiated with the Spanish Navy before. Presumably she has a way to ensure the Brits don't do something like just arrest everyone as soon as they have Stede - just like how Geraldo can safely head home from the Spanish ship despite apparently being an infamous gang member.)
Chauncey literally has Blackbeard in custody happily admitting to death penalty crimes and he's just announcing mid "trial" that Edward will be heading out with his First Mate on Stede's ship without any sort of punishment or supervision? And no one questions this at all? Yeah, no fucking way are the actual events of this day in any way official, nor do I buy that Chauncey did not already have his hands tied in some way making him just let Edward go. The "legal record" stuff is all just pageantry / falsifying evidence for the story later and everyone's in on it. Also why Stede's Act of Grace doesn't mean shit unless Edward signs too. This isn't a real arrest that Stede's legalese-ing his way out of. It's just Edward making a better offer (+ required narrative spin) to the other British officers than Jackie and Izzy did.
Somehow - and this is a comedy so we're going to waive the actual how - the only person whose fate was up in the air was Stede. Which works really well in terms of all the antagonists getting together to make an "enemy of my enemy" deal, and for Chauncey getting blinded and eventually screwed over by his quest for vengeance. If he'd done things officially, as a pirate hunter going after a pirate, then he wouldn't have had Edward and Stede's crew just hanging around in the peanut gallery to screw him over. Probably wouldn't have been doing this in an isolated spot in the middle of nowhere at all. But he made a deal instead, and sacrificed control of the situation for it.
Which is why I find it kind of lame and boring to read the situation like Chauncey did have the power to just do whatever he wanted, and instead simply chose to let everyone go and not screw over Izzy for giggles or weird antagonist solidarity. As if he had the opportunity to put "guy who executed fucking Blackbeard" on his list of accomplishments but wasn't feeling it that day, so might as well just release him.
This definitely throws a wrench in blaming Izzy for all the hypothetical stuff that could have gone wrong in a real arrest (and for stuff that didn't happen like "selling" Edward - a British citizen who can't just be sold to some guy by the Navy even if he was actually in custody), but it actually makes sense as a deal all these people would make instead of Izzy, Ivan, and Fang just strolling onto a ship with fingers crossed that arresting bonus pirates is not a priority today.

I've been reading a lot of conspiracy theories lately for fun and it's wild, sure, a glimpse into the mind of an insane person, but honestly it does kinda get boring after a while once you recognize all of the tropes
It's a real thing that happens and it was a fear for me at first but now? I genuinely don't get how "conspiracy reading for fun" could act as a pipeline to being a conspiracy theorist, like are you stupid?? Were you already susceptible to this brand of thought??? Literally all of these are either odd interpretations of economics, wishful thinking, reboots of antisemitism, or just plain regular bullshit, and like it's really easy to see that, like all of this is dumb, people who believe this are dumb, it's absurd
Fantastic fiction though, these could be good books or games or movies, and like that's what they are and that's their primary audience, people who want to pretend they're the protagonist of a movie, of a grand plot, every bad thing doesn't just happen or are perpetrated some random disturbed people! It's an organized movement at the top of everything responsible for every bad thing ever to keep us in line! It can be a kind of anti-religion in that sense, malevolent gods are better than none
There HAS to be gods at the top of it all, who put ridiculous references to themselves in everything and monolithically control the entire world, because if no one is in control, then that'd be terrifying

okay so friends dragged me into watching jujutsu kaisen and then Obviously Gojo The Tired Millennial Math God was my favorite character so I was dragged into reading the manga flashback arc and just, like. it has been haunting me that clearly everyone only learns about curses in school bc the conversation that pushed Geto over the edge should have gone like this
Yuki: non-shamans are the ones who produce all the cursed energy
Geto: .....so killing all non-shamans would mean no more curses
Yuki: yeah I guess that’s one way to do it but wait, let me do an order of magnitude estimate..... 8 billion* 100/(125 million) ... yeah that’s like under 7000 not to mention that most shamans are already related to each other, shamans would die out too bc humanity’s genetic bottleneck is generally understood to be about 10,000
Geto: what the fuck is a genetic bottleneck
Yuki: oh yeah I forgot y’all don’t actually go to school for anything but curse-destroying, if a species drops below a certain number inbreeding will cause them to die out. humans it’s approximately 10,000. if you assume there are 100 shamans in Japan, which is rounding up, divide by the population of 125 million and then assuming the ratio of shamans to population of the world is the same as in Japan-- which it’s not, we have a higher concentration, but whatever-- multiply by eight billion to get total number of shamans in the world. it’s 6400 using those numbers, which is well under 10,000, and those were all overestimates. if you were able to snap your fingers and kill every single non-shaman without harming any shaman whatsoever they would still almost certainly die off because of the genetic bottleneck
Geto: .......
Yuki: that’s also not to mention all the dangerous things sitting around like nuclear power plants and nuclear arsenals that require human upkeep also how are all the shamans at growing their own food and creating their own clothes and ensuring clean water and I guess so long as we’ve got people with reversed cursed techniques we’re sort of okay on the medical front, but, like, the general supply chain for all modern goods would be completely collapsed
Geto: ..........
Yuki: nice thought though, fun mental exercise, but yeah, science rule number one, always do order of magnitude estimates before running off the deep end with these things the genetic bottleneck is even worse bc most of those shamans are related to each other.
Geto: ...................okay very good to know before going off the deep end

Not to be all 2012 r/atheism but it is kinda frustrating how hard it is to get people to understand that I don't believe in ANYTHING spiritual or supernatural. Like I say I'm an atheist and people think that just means I think church is homophobic but also still totally believe in god and heaven and souls and w/e. (I actually would like to go to a UU church if I still had the ability to regularly wake up on a Sunday morning.) So then I try secular humanist, and they still don't get it. Like the more I try to explain in a way that might get through to people, the more I start sounding like the most annoying condescending things Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris have said.
I have dealt with multiple therapy groups that say they do "holistic" therapy and list stuff like art therapy and music therapy. But then it turns out they also do acupressure and ashwagandha and qi. This latest one was so annoying because I said I was a secular humanist, I don't believe in anything spiritual, I only believe in science, I specifically listed some of the alternative "medicine" stuff that's been pushed on me in the past that I don't want. And then the lady assured me that oh dw by holistic they just mean art therapy and music therapy. It was only after she told me they were affiliated with one of the worst, most toxic, most unscientific groups I've had the displeasure of dealing with, that I pushed for more clarity and she admitted that they would use reiki in meditation. (Meditation is evidence-based, reiki is not.) Like the fact that she didn't realize they could be done separately was just *sigh*
Like why not just be up front? Why not just say "we do holistic therapy, such as acupressure, reiki, and natural herbs"? Why pretend that all you got going is art and music and yoga? Are you trying to trick me into practicing your bullshit?
My religion is science. Please respect my religious beliefs and don't try to force yours on me.
