What are the Bad Kids' favourite Death Grips projects? (Fantasy High)
Tumblr media
I've been having a blast watching Fantasy High: Junior Year, and I have also been relistening to a lot of Death Grips' discography. So, like I do with most of the fandoms I'm in, I'm going to guess what I think each of the Bad Kids' favourite Death Grips project would be. I will give reasoning for each one, but be warned that they are almost completely arbitrary.
Adaine Abernant: n-ggas on the moon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While on one hand I feel like Adaine would find some of the band's heavier albums a bit startling, I think she'd love n-ggas on the moon. It's got this whimsical atmosphere that I think a wizard would really vibe with, and I can see drunk Adaine wilding out to the more high energy tracks like Have A Sad Cum BB and Billy Not Really. Not to mention she'd have a great time deciphering what are arguably Death Grips' most cryptic and mysterious lyrics. This is a party wizard album for sure.
Fabian Aramais Seacaster: Fashion Week
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we all know, Fabian indulges in the finer things in life, and I think his taste in experimental Sacramento-based hip hop would be no different. Fashion Week is the closest Death Grips has ever come to luxury and I'm sure that would attract a young Seacaster. He's totally the type to brag about how refined his taste in music is, evident by how he chooses one of the band's more obscure, instrumental projects over the mainstream slop that is The Money Store. As for the music itself, I feel it's perfect for some wild interpretive dance, and I think Fabian would agree. I can already picture him doing some crazy sheet dance to Runway E.
Fig Faeth: Jenny Death
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jenny Death is the heaviest album in Death Grips' discography, almost acting as fully fledged psychedelic, punk metal album, so I can't imagine why Fig wouldn't adore it. The loud, abrasive guitars, the hypnotic production, the drums that practically punch your ears; it all just screams Fig to me! I mean when I saw the band live the songs from Jenny Death were easily the ones that caused the crowd to go completely wild, and we all know Fig loves a wild crowd. Even the names of the songs are perfect for her: I Break Mirrors With My Face In the United States, Centuries of Damn, Beyond Alive, and The Powers That B all sound like they came right from the Archdevil's own mind.
Also yes, I'm aware I missed an opportunity to assign her Bottomless Pit, but these are the sacrifices I make for accuracy.
Gorgug Thistlespring: Exmilitary
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For a barbarian drummer, I can see no better fit than the band's debut mixtape, Exmilitary. This mixtape is so raw and primal, I mean the drums sound like war drums. We already know that Gorgug loves heavy, intense music, so I think he'd totally rock with this. I also think that the tape's unique, grinding production would appeal to his artificer side; it's a perfect mix of rage and technology, and I can imagine him blasting something like Takyon or Guillotine as he hacks through some enemies.
Kristen Applebees: Government Plates
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For someone who's constantly riddled with feelings of doubt and confusion while also maintaining a general aura of weirdness (affectionate), I think Government Plates is a good pick for Kristen. It's the kind of album that you have to sit down and listen to a couple times before you really vibe with it; it doesn't want to be understood, but that doesn't mean you should stop trying! Not to mention the pure emotional intensity of tracks like You Might Think He Loves You... (I'm not writing the full title.), Two Heavens, and Bootleg (Don't Need Your Help) suit Kristen very well imo. An underappreciated album for an underappreciated character.
Riz Gukgak: No Love Deep Web
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And for everyone's favourite little weirdo is what I consider Death Grips' certified weirdo album (They're all weirdo albums, but this one especially so). Though my reason for choosing No Love Deep Web as Riz's favourite Death Grips project isn't because of the music itself, but rather the history surrounding this album. If you didn't know, this album was released through a secret Alternate Reality Game on the deep web where fans had to solve incredibly cryptic puzzles over a few days in order to gain access to a link that allowed them to torrent the album, and I think that Riz would be all over that shit; I can imagine him setting up a little cork board with all of the clues and whatnot strung up. I don't even know if he'd even like the music, I think he's just invested in the mystery!

EPISODE 21 TRIVIA:
- CROP TOP KARATE KID
- "ashe is an edgy kid thats mad at his dad, but when you tried to get him arrested i really didnt know how he would respond to that"
- "wavelength has a +10 to deception." "YEAH, AND THAT SHOULD BE A RED FLAG"
- THE CHOICE THIS EPISODE. to go with either tide or mark. it was flipped! they went with mark bc in a meta way they thought that would be the most exciting/dangerous and going with tide wouldve been the safe route. this is not the case if they wouldve gone with tide something crazy wouldve happened !!! mark was the safe option. hehe
- now theyre all disappointed they didnt go with tide:
grizzly: "what happened, charlie? you were so set on going with tide at first"
charlie: "i KNOW!! because he was THERE IN THE ROOM WITH US and hes TIDE and hes my... FOSTER DAD!"
- grizzly: dakota would always go with tide no hesitation. the only reason he didnt is because william said otherwise and he trusts william (<< im literally always so fucking crazy every time he says something ljke this)
- LOTS OF WILLIAM CRUMBS THIS EPISODE. i havent actually relistened to it yet and charlie is being really vague about what they are so i dont remember but. apparently there were a lot of little conversation moments that were dropped in here that allude to wiwi backstory
- "mark is a bitch" << theyre so fucking mean to him in the rolleds all the tjme. free my man
- "ashe is really mad at him right now but if he lost mark he wouldnt have any family left" HEY YAKKO???? hey yakko im at work rn dont do this to me .
- condi responds to this immediately with "welcome to the no family club, me and dakota are already here" guys please
- chorus of "i love tide"s . these kids have a favorite divorced father fr. sorry. no im not
- AND THUS BEGINS THE INFAMOUS LIZARD DISCUSSION. FORGOT THIS STARTED HERE. OKAY. im so mad this happens almost entirely in rolleds because most people miss it and the payoff is SO fucking funny. theyre discussing power levels. and in the m&m handbook it gives like. template enemy statblocks and some of those are animals and for whatever reason theres just a WHOLE PAGE of this that are various kinds of lizards and they all find this so funny. bc pd at this point is power level 6. the first thing listed on that page is an alligator..... which is power level 7. "we are not even strong enough to defeat an alligator at this point, we cant even go to florida safely" "dont worry tide we'll come save you from your inevitable offscreen death because we didnt come with you and instead went with asshole mark" (bizly, in tide voice:) "dont worry, just bring 4 alligators with you" THIS GOES ON. FOR A WHILE. ITS REALLT FUNNY. this continues to be a topic of conversation for ljke the next 3 rolleds so prepare for more lizard power level discussion
- they start talking about tides powers and apparently they thought he could breathe underwater and talk to fish but bizly describes him as "more like a water bender than aquaman"
- grizzly said this was lame bc he thought it was the other way around but then charlie was like "listen, we already have aquaman on just roll with it and its gillion tidestrider" this is not relevant at all but i have to include every time gillion is mentioned outside of riptide bc i hear his name and my ears perk up like a dog
- anyway. CONCLUSION to that is that tide cannot talk to fish but it is unconfirmed whether or not he can breathe underwater. which i think is neat :]
- "do you think people let le frog rob them because they feel bad for him" "do you think le frog gets hired for childrens birthday parties"
WAVELENGTH HAS A PLUS 10 TO DECEPTION. YEAH. BIT OF A RED FLAG THERE. JUST A BIT
NOOO they could have gone with tide and had exciting times but instead they had 2 babysit mark the depressed widowed dad </3 thats ok tho i love when they have to babysit this grown ass man. i love the pd + mark winters shenanigans
"ashe is really mad at him right now but if he lost mark he wouldnt have any family left" WHAT IF I EXPLODED??? RIGHT HERE AND NOW???? HELLO
the lizards..... i an beginning 2 understand why overlord's reveal was so fucking funny. it was funny without context but the context is funnier
MAC GOING CRAZY ABOUT ANY MENTION OF GILLION TIDESTRIDER (A SEA THEMED CHARACTER). FORK FOUND IN KITCHEN!!!! (<<said very affectionately)
i like 2 think le frog gets hired for birthday parties <3 i love le frog. le frog i love u. favourite pd character right here. le frog u are everything 2 me <3

Recency Bias is so wild bc I’m relistening to the newest episode (S2 Ep. 30 - Mrs. Swallows Oak Garcia’s Home for Peculiar Teenagers) and I literally love Jodie sm???
He’s such a disaster but in such a dad way.
Everyone yelling at Jodie to stop butting into the argument and him sounding so offended going “YOU’RE IN MY HELL?!!”
When Nick was like “don’t listen to my dumbass dad, you kids should separate.” And Jodie claps back with “OH, like your arms have been separated from your BODY, NICK?” FUCKING ICONIC??
Him calling up Hermie after being kicked to the first level of hell, saying I love you and then immediately accidentally hanging up before Hermie can respond?? DEAD.
Jimmy’s so goddamn funny I miss him already.

i finally finished Bridgewater season 2!
(i know i'm way behind but i was listening on my drive to and from work but then i lost my job and suddenly listening at home felt weird but i binged the last handful of eps this long weekend so now i wanna share some thoughts..)
best finale bits:
- realising francine was spn alumn/battlestar galactica's tricia helfer (wish I'd realised this sooner bc i think i would've enjoyed her character more)
- jeremy becoming an unexpected father to a time travelling kid he spent the whole season vocally not giving a shit about (serious s13!grieving!dean vibes here)
- the setup for season 3! would love to get some pov from folks in the fae realm!
best s2 bits:
- aside from misha, soni has been my fave thing about this series (his voice acting is So Good) and this season we got more vippin and more of him interacting with other characters!
- learning more about jeremy: he visited fairyland as a kid! he was a teen wiccan! he just wants a friend! he's happy without a partner and kids! (the phonecall to his british colleague was a fave scene)
- peyton! wish we'd gotten more of her, hope she returns next season.
- more hillary! she's not in it much but we got a few long scenes with her and it was great to hear her flex her voice acting chops.
- tudyk! i was sceptical at first (i'd really been looking forward to fillion) but he was stellar. his distinct voice is perfect for voice acting and his vocal control and timing was really superb. his and misha's scenes were a highlight but there were also a few delightful and emotional scenes with other characters (including a makeover!)
- MONSTERS. one of the huge draws of this podcast for me was the supernatural element. this season had a bunch of different creatures appear and there were mentions of way more that had me googling and learning so much (yay fic fodder!)
a few s2 cons (imho):
- this season is a lot compared to season 1. more characters, more plot, more at stake. it was hard to keep up with what was going on specifically with all the fae stuff. i had to relisten to numerous scenes multiple times to grasp what was happening.
- it kinda feels like season 1 was written not knowing how everything would play out bc all the fae stuff feels shoehorned into the relevant parts of the s1 narrative. they make it work but some explanations seemed like a bit of a stretch.
- as much as i love her on-screen, i didn't really enjoy helfer in this. i don't know whether it's because i found her character annoying from the jump or if it was her vocal style being a little too overdramatic and on the nose (that could've been a director's decision in which case it makes sense, but i really didn't enjoy her personality as the legend tripper or her almost comical portrayal as fae)
- the finale was a lot of exposition, and it got very convoluted with different characters wanting to sacrifice themselves over each other, and the whole fae deal thing was still unclear and confusing despite being explained. tbh i was bored for most of it.
- the first 19 minutes of the finale was an uninterrupted convo between jeremy and francine. that's too long, it's half the damn episode. and francine was doing most of the talking (almost monologuing) and since she's the badguy of the season it felt like a poor choice (or maybe that's just my bias for not liking her portrayal?)
- anne and thomas going through the portal made total sense and I'm glad that's what happened bc thomas was sick and anne had missed her life BUT that made all the arguments over who should go that much more pointless. the arguments felt like filler, going round in circles with people ignoring each other's sound reasoning.
- there were quite a few noticeable editing mistakes this season: chopped dialogue poorly stitched together, misspoken words, and dead air that did nothing to set the tone but instead felt like they hadn't bothered fixing.
closing thoughts:
i preferred the mystery of season 1. this season was a lot of focus on the how's and why's of all the monster and fae stuff with character studies crammed between, whereas season 1 was more concise in the investigation and character focus and there was always room to wonder what was going on (i preferred that) but there was also room for the narrative to breathe; season 2 is crowded. it's a lot of fast dialogue and info dumping, a lot of characters - some interesting, some annoying, a few pointless. I'd listen again for clarity and enjoyment of particular scenes and dynamics, but more often than not i found myself confused, left with more questions than answers, and therefore not being able to enjoy the journey. there were definite high points, including the many monster cameos, but it lost that eery feel that season 1 did so well; this season felt like multiple genres rolled into one with all of them fighting for dominance - horror, fantasy, drama, mystery - whereas season 1 melded themes and genres effortlessly. season 2 also didn't have the emotional chords that season 1 played so beautifully (I'm looking at you, emotional jeremy realising his whole life was a lie) the finale should've been a tear-jerker, it wasn't.
it's always hard to follow the success of a first season, especially when the second decides to explain all the mysteries season 1 set up - and given how season 1 ended there was a lot that needed explaining. unfortunately (for me) the story felt caught up in the details and yet it explained things without explaining things leaving me wanting for clarity that never came. often it didn't bother setting the tone (or an intriguing tone) and more characters meant less misha which is always disheartening.
i'm looking forward to season 3 with papa!jeremy(?) and fae realm content (I'd love more fae) i just hope they can recapture the thematic feel of season 1 (it can be a different vibe but it has to permeate the narrative) and refocus on our main folk (jeremy, vippin, anne, thomas, olivia) instead of introducing too many new characters and elements that will steal more scene time.

My thoughts while relistening with headphones:
Lavender Haze - Okay wait. Wait a second. This is so good??? I like it a lot actually.
Maroon - Still like this one, like it even better now. Also putting it in the Betty folder. 😶
Anti-Hero - I love the moments of emotion in the vocals on this track! That almost growl of "it's meeee" at the end? TAYLOR!!
Snow On The Beach - Still love this song. It sounds like snow on the beach, weirdly. Like summer music with a wintery, almost holiday vibe. Love the whole concept really. Also was that a Rocky Horror reference in the bridge?? 👀
You're On Your Own Kid - I feel like this entire album is full of so many old Hollywood film references and I'm only catching less than half of them. This song hits me square in the chest, Jesus. Also the length of some of these phrases, how big are her lungs?!
Midnight Rain - Unpopular opinion (maybe?) I like/get the distortion of the chorus/pre-chorus on this one. It really makes the one time we get Taylor's undistorted voice on it stand out and feel like someone finally saying out loud what they could only whisper before. Also, I'm not sure I've ever related to a song so hard??? Like shit Taylor just read my damn diary out loud I guess.
Question...? - This is such a stream-of-consciousness song and I like that about it. Jesus Christ I cannot overstate how much listening to this on headphones improves it. Every little sound is picked out with such clarity and her voice actually ISN'T overshadowed, it's supported by everything around it.
Vigilante Shit - Oh godddd as good as this song was already it is INFINITELY better with Taylor singing it directly into my ears. 🥵😳 Her voice in this is so good, she's pulling some lounge singer tricks in this and I LOVE IT.
Bejeweled - Fuck me this song is so good and fun. Someone on my dash said it sounds sparkly and it DOES.
Labyrinth - Truly the number of details I missed on this damn album listening to it via a single speaker. The way Labyrinth starts with this semi-vocalized heartbeat sound and the entire song is also synched to a heartbeat-like rhythm. This one sounded the messiest in the single speaker but sounds really good in headphones. I do still think the high parts were straining the top of Taylor's range but only just barely.
Karma - This still strikes me as a very angry song and I love that for it. It's giving extremely reputation vibes and that's one of my favorite Taylor albums so. This one is another that sounded extra messy in a single speaker, but sounds amazing in headphones. The lyrics are so much fun. Also "karma is my boyfriend" objectively hilarious and great line.
Sweet Nothing - Still love this one, it's very sweet. I still think it lets her voice shine the most out of anything but Vigilante Shit, but the difference isn't nearly as stark as I thought. The songs Taylor chooses to close out her albums have a particular flavor, and this one is like that. It's a great penultimate track but could have also been a great final song.
Mastermind - This song IS extremely electropop even in headphones but it doesn't drown out Taylor's voice and it sounds way more skillful in headphones. I enjoy the way the music provides a sort of hectic counterpoint to her lyrics and singing which are much more even and measured.
Overall: I would like to sincerely apologize to Jack Antonoff. I should never have doubted you! It's not your fault my television apparently has only one single shitty speaker. The album is still pretty poppy but it WORKS. It's simply an album that requires stereo sound. The whole album sounds amazing in headphones, her voice shines through just fine when I'm listening through decent speakers!

vienna philharmonic 2023 new years’ concert thoughts bc it doesn’t air here until fucking prime time 😛
ok like this went by so fast?? idk if it’s just because i’ve gotten used to the length of this concert since i’ve been watching it for several years in a row or if watching opera has just desensitized me to performance length but i was genuinely shocked when it was time for the first encore. i was like there HAS to be more
something else we generally thought there should be more of: my parents were watching with me and they could not stop commenting on how few women there were this time
anyway. yeah
is there a word for feeling homesick for a place that’s not actually your home? because that’s what this concert does to me every year :( vienna my beloved :(
and especially the musikverein my beloved…out of pure sheer dumb luck did i get to go there and i swear it’s become my one personality trait since
those music stands aaauuughh yelling i remember them and the FLOOR that’s all scuffed and marked AAAGGHH
at this point i just realized that somehow i missed like six pieces off the program, which would definitely explain why i felt like it was shorter. silly me. will investigate why i missed six pieces off the program. sigh
OBOE 1 BESTIEWORSTIE DOPPELGÄNGER ALERT! OBOE 1 BESTIEWORSTIE DOPPELGÄNGER ALERT! OBOE 1 BESTIEWORSTIE DOPPELGÄNGER ALERT!
tumblr has ruined me because i can’t even talk about classical music normally anymore (i mean like i ever talked about it normally ever, in my life) i really wanted to say that the dialogue between the winds and firsts in zeisserln was pussy popping good but my parents were there and i couldn’t
i’m back to talking about the hall bc it’s my one personality trait the standing room at the back is closer to the stage than the broadcasts make it seem bc you can see very clearly what goes on back there from the stage
i genuinely didn’t think there was that much room in front of the organ to put three rows of a chorus but they did it, the madlads
god what i wouldn’t give to see this place again and hear this orchestra in it. em focus
really felt like the orchestra drowned out the chorus at some points during their bit :( but the kids were great!!
that fantasy for orchestra. screaming crying throwing up i loved it
ALSO that hellmesberger polka and gallop was 👀 will definitely relisten when i find the recording
this concert always makes me happy. though i can’t believe i missed six pieces off the front of it. devastating will go back and see if the DVR picked it up

Drunk Texting Is(n’t) Bad for Your Health- Chapter Five
Series Summary: Talk about your unconventional meet-cute! Bucky receives a text by mistake requesting he prove he's not Reader's sister. The easy dialogue between Reader and Bucky sparks a natural friendship, but could it lead to more? Bucky still deems himself unworthy of any form of affection or love. Reader is hellbent to prove him wrong. With the help of some (meddling) friends along the way, Bucky may get his happily-ever-after after all.
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Word Count: 3601
Warnings: ANGST, Bucky most definitely needs a hug halfway through this, bad language words
A/N: I’m flattered and frankly overwhelmed with the love and support everyone is showing for this little story. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! 🥰
A/N 2: divider credit- @firefly-graphics
In case you missed the update, I will try to publish a new chapter every Saturday from here on out. 🤞

Whistles and sirens were blaring inside Bucky’s head as he stared at Peter’s neighbor. Everything within him was screaming at him to run away. His anxiety ticked up. Could this really be (Y/N)?
He would have recognized her voice anywhere. God only knew how many times he’d listened and relistened to her voicemail. He wasn’t obsessive; he just liked the dips-the peaks and valleys-in her voice and the self-deprecating laugh she’d made. And with his super soldier hearing- he’d learned a knack for these things.
Bucky stood unmoving and breathless while shaking (Y/N)’s hand in front of her door. All he could do was stare at her. He had never imagined in a million years meeting her face-to-face. It was like a dream. A weird but wonderful dream.
He was stunned by her beauty as he gazed into her smiling face. Not that he’d ever pictured her being unattractive.
No siree.
It was a shock to have her here now, but to have her looking the way she did? (Y/N) was gorgeous. Her eyes sparkled with giddiness, and pink tinged the apples of her cheeks.
He must have finally died and gone to heaven. That was the only explanation he could think of right now.
Because there (Y/N) was, in front of him and in the flesh, still shaking his hand.
Still.
Bucky’s stomach swooped with the feeling of embarrassment. He could feel the skin of his face warming quickly. He was just like Lang meeting Steve at the airport in Germany. An overeager puppy.
God, he was an idiot.
He caught an uncomfortable look flash across (Y/N)’s face but continued pumping her arm. Peter cleared his throat beside him, and (Y/N) grinned wider in response.
A dazzling smile.
“Gonna need my hand back to unlock the door,” she said with a soft chuckle.
Bucky dropped it like he’d been burned. He could see Peter giving him a goofy look out of the corner of his eye. Like that kid wasn’t awkward as fuck around girls. “Sorry,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck with his flesh hand.
What was he thinking, shaking her hand so long?
Bucky clumsily followed (Y/N) and Peter into her apartment after the deadbolt was unlocked and nearly dumped her grocery bags on the floor. He couldn’t take his eyes away from her. Peter threw him another weird look.
“Please excuse my friend,” Peter quipped, patting Bucky on the shoulder.  “Apparently, he just learned to walk yesterday.”
(Y/N) laughed politely at the joke, and Bucky blushed furiously.
From the stories Steve had told him about their past and “sweeping dames off their feet,” why was this so hard? It should be like taking candy from a baby. He had a rapport with her, not that she knew, but it should be more comfortable than it was. His shoulders slumped.
“S-sorry,” Bucky stuttered out. (Y/N) smiled sweetly at the apology, and his chest constricted.
“Don’t worry about it,” (Y/N) reasoned, “I just had the floors waxed.” She winked at him as she grabbed a bag from his arms.
Bucky’s breath caught in his throat. She winked. She fucking winked!
Was (Y/N) flirting? Did he flirt back? Did he even remember how? He would have known what to do if they were texting instead. Their whole relationship was easier when they weren’t face-to-face. When he couldn’t see how the light in the kitchen made her hair shine or how her eyes twinkled when she laughed, he was a lot smoother.
Smooth like creamy peanut butter.
It was so frustrating only remembering bits and snatches of his old memories. This situation was nothing like the girl at the coffee shop he sometimes visited or the corner market’s cashier. This was (Y/N). This was someone he’d reciprocate the advances from- given half a chance. Someone he definitely didn’t have feelings for, though.
Nope. Not at all.
From somewhere hidden deep inside, the darkness crept in. You think she’s flirting with you? You think she wants someone like you? She pities you, his inner voice said—pity for a sad, broken man.
The breath previously stuck inside him rushed out in a sob.  His stomach plunged to his feet again, but not in embarrassment this time. This time, it was for actually believing he might have a chance with (Y/N). Thinking she’d settle for someone like him.
He was dangerous. He was a murderer.
(Y/N)’s face filled with concern, eyebrows pinching together, and she edged closer. She raised a hand to touch him but thought twice. “You okay?”
Bucky shook his head to dispel the bleak thoughts. “Ye-yeah, sorry.” The room kept spinning.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost. Would you like some water?” (Y/N) asked, rushing to the cupboard to pull down a glass to fill.
Peter stepped closer to his side. “You don’t look too good, man. Yer not havin’ one of your flashbacks, are ya?”
Bucky looked at Peter for a moment, puzzled. Flashback? His grapefruit was too scrambled to conjure up any of the horrors he experienced at night during the day. “No, kid. I’m fine,” he lied.
Peter inched back slightly, but still within reach if the worst should happen.
Bucky saw (Y/N) watching him expectantly, tilting the glass in his direction. “No, thank you, ma’am. Water won’t be necessary.”
He observed (Y/N)’s eyes slowly widen in shock.
“Ma’am?” (Y/N) asked in mock offense. “Ma’am?”
Peter started laughing as Bucky’s mouth popped open in a horrified “O.” He tried to protest, but nothing would come out.
(Y/N) turned to Peter, who was now gasping in laughter. “It’s the cardigan, huh?” she questioned jokingly. “It makes me look like a crazy cat lady, doesn’t it?”
Bucky’s face flushed instantly. “That’s not…” he argued, the end of his sentence coming out as a groan instead.
How had this night and their meeting gone downhill so quickly? He couldn’t do anything right around (Y/N), it seemed.
How could he win her heart if he was just some bumbling fool?
Oh, god! Was he actively trying to win (Y/N) over?
Bucky’s pulse hammered underneath his skin. He’d finally met the girl he was falling for, and he was mucking up the whole thing. The instinct to flee suddenly kicked into high gear.
He took one last look at Peter, hunched over in laughter and holding his stomach. Bucky narrowed his eyes at the kid. He had some nerve! He slid his eyes over to where (Y/N) stood. Her expression was rapidly morphing from good-humored to regret.
Bucky placed the final bag he held on the counter and huffed a sigh before walking past (Y/N) and Peter out of the kitchen, heading for the door. (Y/N) caught the nook of his elbow as he passed, stopping him.
He looked down at the delicate fingers wrapped around his arm, and his heart lurched. She wasn’t afraid, he thought. She knew who he was- what he was- and she wasn’t afraid. He brought his gaze back up to hers. He could easily break every finger of her hand, but there was no fear in her eyes—just remorse.
“I apologize,” (Y/N) assured. “I didn’t mean to embarrass you.” Her hand skimmed down his forearm to his wrist and left behind the fleeting feeling of her touch.
“It’s fine,” Bucky said gruffly. “I was leaving anyway.” He nodded at Peter, who had managed to pull himself together from his laughing fit, and gave (Y/N) a thin-lipped smile. He made his way to the door.
(Y/N)’s face dropped as he walked away. “Oh. Well, thank you for your help with my groceries,” she called.
Bucky’s step faltered as he walked through the doorway. He glanced over his shoulder at (Y/N) for a moment and shut the door.
He had had no desire to leave the radiant presence of (Y/N), but if he didn't, the fluttering he felt inside would have turned into a full-blown panic attack while thinking about every misstep he’d taken.
Reaching the sidewalk outside (Y/N) and Peter’s building, Bucky expelled a huge exhale.
“Well, that was a fucking disaster,” he grumbled to himself.
He stomped down the sidewalk to where he’d parked the car he’d borrowed from the compound. He wrenched the driver-side door open in frustration, nearly ripping the thing off. He slid inside and stared out the windshield. Was there a way back from this? Or was he destined to spend eternity in the friend zone?
Bucky wrung his hands around the steering wheel and let out a moan of exasperation. He started the ignition and gave one last glance to (Y/N)’s building. He tucked away any hope he thought he might’ve had with her in the far recesses of his mind and drove away.
Tumblr media
Bucky was trembling by the time he returned to the compound. He clenched and unclenched his fists as he strode down one of the many halls leading to his quarters. He had worked himself into a frenzy on the drive home.
It was her, he thought, gliding his gloved hand through the hair that had come loose from the earlier knot he’d tied. It was definitely (Y/N).
There was no mistaking it was her, now. Bucky was absolutely sure. (Y/N)’s voicemail had played over and over in his mind on the ride upstate.
Bucky stalked down the hallway, cursing himself again for blowing any modicum of a chance he had with (Y/N).
What was he saying? Did he stand a real chance with her? He was The Winter fucking Solider. The Asset. Soldat.
Of course not.
He growled as he moved closer to his apartment, his sanctuary. It was the only place he could find any real solace nowadays.
Struggling with his internal conflict, focusing too much on the what-ifs, he didn’t see the solid wall of muscle until it was too late.
“Whoa, Buck! Easy there,” Steve said as he steadied his dazed best friend. “Where’s the fire?”
Bucky glimpsed into Steve’s eyes, his own shimmering with sadness. Steve thought the world of him. He could do no wrong, according to Steve. What would he think after this?
“Are you okay?” Steve asked, voice full of worry.
“I fucked up, Stevie,” Bucky lamented, eyes now downcast to the floor.
“What happened?” Steve asked, grabbing hold of Bucky’s shoulder.  “What did you do?”
Bucky’s eyes flicked back up to Steve’s face, and he watched fear crawl across it.
His body practically crumpled inwardly. “It was her,” Bucky said. “She was right in front of me.”
“Her who?” Steve questioned. The look of fear slipped into one of misunderstanding once he realized no immediate threat or harm was coming to Bucky.
Bucky chuckled. “(Y/N).” His focus wasn’t on Steve anymore, but just over his right shoulder. His eyes were wistful.
“(Y/N)?”
“Yeah,” he sighed. “She was so...God, she was just so beautiful.”
Bucky proceeded when Steve continued to stare at him blankly. “She was a breath of fresh air after you’ve run at full-speed for what seems, like, forever.”
“A breath of fresh air?”
“Yes!”
“I’m still not exactly sure who we’re talkin’ about,” Steve confessed.
“God, punk! Pay attention,” Bucky groused, swiping both hands through his hair.
“Who’s (Y/N) again?”
“She’s the girl,” Bucky explained.
“The girl?” Steve asked, still not quite understanding.
“The girl,” Bucky emphasized.
A look of realization finally dawned on Steve’s face. “(Y/N)? The girl you’ve been texting?”
“YES!” Bucky exclaimed emphatically. “For a smart guy, you can be pretty dense.”
“Wait, how?”
“I was helping Parker with some schoolwork, and she’s his neighbor, apparently,” Bucky answered.
“She’s Peter’s neighbor? In Queens?”
“Did you have a stroke or somethin’?” Bucky wondered. “Yes, in Queens. Next door to Parker.”
“You didn’t tell me she was in New York,” Steve said, a hint of hurt in his voice.
“I didn’t think it mattered at the time,” Bucky admitted. “It wasn’t like I ever planned to meet her in person.”
“So, what now? Did you ask her on a date?”
“What?!” Bucky asked in disbelief. He goggled at his best friend like he’d grown a second head. “What part of ‘I fucked up’ didn’t you understand?”
“It couldn’t’ve been that bad,” Steve soothed. “What exactly happened?”
Bucky recounted the whole bungled interaction, down to every gory detail.
“And you just stood there, staring at her?” Steve asked, slightly wincing in secondhand discomfort.
“With my mouth open and everything. Like I was a goddamn fish out of water,” Bucky stated candidly. He scuffed a foot across the linoleum floor. He could feel the anxiety building inside him again.
“Maybe it’s not as bad as you think?”
Bucky pulled his phone from his pocket and thumbed to the messaging app. “Parker said, and I quote, ‘Way to make it weird with Miss (Y/L/N).’”
Steve looked nonplussed. “H-how?”
Bucky threw up his arms in defeat. His hands landed atop his head, and his fingers snaked into his hair, pulling at the roots. “I dunno what happened! I realized I was actually talking to (Y/N), and my insides turned to jelly!”
Steve stepped forward and guided Bucky’s hands from his hair. Empathy and compassion filled his crystalline eyes.
“How...how do I fix this, Stevie?” Bucky whimpered softly.
Steve sighed. “I don’t know if it can be fixed, but you need to talk to her.”
Bucky blanched at the thought. “I-I-I can’t,” he stammered.
“Why?”
“I like what we have,” Bucky explained. “I like that I’m just James from Brooklyn with her.”
His mouth thinned as he picked at his flesh hand’s thumbnail. “Plus, if I tell (Y/N) who I really am, she’ll judge everything going forward on today’s meeting.”
“You really like her, huh?” Steve queried.
“Well, yeah,” Bucky answered, blushing a bit. “She’s pretty great.”
A smirk lifted at the corners of Steve’s mouth. “No, I mean, you really like her.”
Bucky’s blush deepened. “I don’t-I don’t know what you’re talkin’ about.”
Steve huffed a small laugh, faintly shaking his head. He held up his hands in mock surrender. He took a step closer to his best friend. “Whatever you decide to do- whether it’s to tell her the truth or just suss out the situation- just talk to her.” He placed a hand on Bucky’s right shoulder and squeezed gently. “Don’t wait too long, though, and miss your opportunity. You’ll be kickin’ yourself.”
Bucky nodded his head in agreement. “I know.”
“Everyone deserves good things to come to them. You most of all, Buck.” Steve squeezed one more time before dropping his hand to his side.
Bucky blinked rapidly at the sentiment, trying his best to keep the emotion out of his eyes. He smiled. “Thank you, Steve. For everything.”
Tumblr media
After a long shower to help himself unwind and wash away all the stress of the day, Bucky was sprawled out on his bed in a t-shirt and loose-fitting sweats. His phone was in the palm of his hand, and his heart was doing flip flops in his chest. His anxiety was gradually spiking, undoing the purpose of the earlier shower. It had been nearly two hours since he charged out of (Y/N)’s apartment. Why hadn’t she texted him?
Before he could overthink it more than he already had, he punched in a text and initiated the conversation.
Bucky Hey, doll. How was your day?
He stared at the screen of his phone, willing (Y/N) to reply.
He watched the words go in and out of focus as he continued to observe the unchanging text thread. His right palm was beginning to sweat.
Several minutes passed before Bucky gave up and threw the phone to the bed. He tapped his fingers in a rhythm against his thighs to keep them occupied, only to find himself crossing his arms across his chest moments later. Seconds afterward, he uncrossed his arms, balling his hands into fists. He reached for the book on the nightstand, hoping for a distraction from the silence of his phone.
He was inevitably waiting for a text he knew wasn’t coming.
Bucky consciously tried to read the words on the page, but his mind kept drifting. (Y/N) was smart. She had obviously put two and two together, and she was currently composing a polite yet firm text dismissing him.
He couldn’t take it anymore. The silence was maddening!
He shoved the bookmark back in the book, tossed it on the nightstand roughly, and got up from the bed to start pacing. Periodically, his hands would find their way into his wet locks, tugging ever so slightly.
After what seemed like the twentieth circuit around the bedroom, a soft buzzing came from the mattress top. Bucky rushed toward the bed and retrieved the device. He clutched it to his heaving chest before exhaling loudly.
Moment of truth, he thought.
He raised the phone to see the screen.
(Y/N) Hey, sorry! I must’ve dozed off while taking my bath.
(Y/N) Didn’t mean to leave you hanging!
A weight lifted from Bucky’s shoulders. She hadn’t purposely meant to ignore his text. He breathed a sigh of relief.
Bucky Don’t worry about it.
(Y/N) I guess I was more tired than I thought.
Bucky Should I let you go?
(Y/N) No, no...I can chat.
Bucky So, how was your day?
(Y/N) It was good. The subway was on time this morning. Timmons wasn’t too much of a pain in the ass, even though we are in the middle of putting together a huge, new account.
(Y/N) I had dinner with Robyn at Penelope to discuss centerpieces for the wedding.
Bucky held his breath as he watched the ellipses blink on his phone. This is it. This is where (Y/N) let him down easy.
(Y/N) Then, I came home to a hot bath and a bottle of wine.
Bucky reread the last text three times before it sank in that (Y/N) hadn’t mentioned anything about running into him. Maybe it really was okay.
(Y/N) Oh, and I met my first Avenger today.
There it was. That’s what Bucky had been waiting for. Butterflies erupted in his stomach and flapped slowly up to his chest. His thumbs gracelessly typed out his message.
Bucky Oh, yeah? Who’d you meet?
Bucky tried to calm his breathing as he anticipated (Y/N)’s reply.
(Y/N) It is was something like Bunky or Borky. The one with the metal arm.
Borky?!
Bucky You mean Bucky?
(Y/N) Yup. Thats the one!
Bucky Well…???
(Y/N) He was absolutely adorkable!
Bucky Adorkable? 🤔
What the hell does that even mean? Bucky wondered, gripping his phone a little tighter.
(Y/N) You know, adorable but dorky. Adorkable!
Bucky Oh.
(Y/N) He wouldn’t stop shaking my hand when my neighbor introduced us and he was just staring. he almost dropped my groceries all over the kitchen because he wouldn’t stop staring.
Bucky Wait, your neighbor knows an Avenger?
(Y/N) Pssh! Im pretty sure hes an avenger too!
Bucky What?!?! 😳 Which one???
Bucky’s heart started galloping as he read (Y/N)’s words. Did she know about Parker?
(Y/N) hes obviously spiderman
Oh, shit! She did.
Bucky How do you figure?
(Y/N) same height/build...ive listened to interviews with spiderman...sounds just like peter...he has an “internship” at stark industries...and i saw peter climbing up the side of our building once in the spiderman costume
(Y/N) spiderman is peter parker
(Y/N) dont tell anyone i told you though...its a secret
Bucky How much wine have you had, doll?
(Y/N) 1 or 2 glasses y?
Bucky chuckled at (Y/N)’s obliviousness. She was quite “adorkable” when she was drinking.
Bucky Your grammar has gone to shit, and you think your neighbor is Spider-Man.
(Y/N) grammar schwammer and he is
Bucky threw his head back in a full laugh. He was suddenly glad he took Steve’s advice and texted (Y/N). She really wasn’t bothered he’d made a fool of himself earlier. At least, not with a little wine in her.
(Y/N) Like borky, you should have seen borky barnes! he turned red as a tomato when he almost dropped my stuff...i think someone was smitten
Bucky’s stomach rolled when he noticed the subject change. She wasn’t going to let it go.
Bucky Can you blame him? I bet you’re cute as a button.
(Y/N) well obvi...i feel bad though...i kinda gave him a hard time for calling me ma’am...i regretted it the sec it happened...he kinda stormed out...i know i hurt his feelings
(Y/N) he was just being polite cuz you know- manners
Bucky What would you do if you saw him again?
Now was his chance to see where he stood. To know if he even had a fighting chance.
(Y/N) probably apologize profusely then ask him out for a cup of coffee
Bucky You’d ask him out for a cup of coffee?
(Y/N) y not? hes easy on the eyes and when those baby blues are locked on you-its hypnotizing
And just like that, Bucky knew he was back in the game.
Tumblr media
10:37 pm- later that night
Bucky Hey, dipshit. (Y/N) knows you’re Spider-Man.

TTS Songs Ranked Worst to Best
Tumblr media
Someone asked me to rank my fav and least fav TTS songs a while back, but I’ve since then relistened to the soundtrack and there’s a whole bunch of songs that just forgot about, so here’s a more accurate ranking now that the songs are more fresh in my mind
32 .  Life After Happily Ever After (Reprise)
Tumblr media
This song is infuriating, because the finale is infuriating. Listening to this song just makes me angry all over again because it reminds me just how unsatisfying the ending to TTS was. I wanted to turn it off at several points. I barely can get through it despite it being so short. It doesn’t help that the soundtrack leaves all the dialogue in there and fails to actually end the song. It just cuts off before the final note.
31. Hook Foot’s Ballad
Tumblr media
Does this even count as a song? Why is it here on the soundtrack but not the Hurt Incantation? Did Menken really waste his talent writing a joke and did the showrunners really waste money and limited resources on this?
30. Friendship Song
Tumblr media
Bland, boring, and pointless. It was clearly written as a marketing stunt for the radio disney charts and not as anything to do with the plot of the series. They just throw it up on screen to fill out the running time and don't even let the whole song play through. It’s pitiful.
29. Waiting in the Wings (Reprise)
Tumblr media
I didn’t think much of the original song one way or the other, but the reprise is soooo dumb. The plot twist it introduces winds up ruining the whole show and sabotaging both Cassandra’s and Rapunzel’s characters. It’s not even a nice sounding song on it’s own. The kid’s voice is irritating (who I’m sure is doing her best, but really little kids shouldn’t be made to sing professionally as a general rule) and the melody just as bland as the first time it was played. The only reason to like this song is if you’r a mega fan of Cassandra’s or her VA, which I am not. (Note: this is not a criticism of Eden Espinosa, I just don’t happen to follow any of the VAs in this show)
28. Through It All
Tumblr media
I like the instrumentals in this song, and that’s about it. Everything about this song is wrong. It doesn’t fit the story, it’s a misuse of the cast and songwriters, it’s a waste of valuable screen time, the melody is dull, and the dang soundtrack had to throw in that lame dialogue about ‘greatest threat ever’ at the beginning. If you want a pump up song in your story then you got to earn it. You can’t just tell us things are bad, you got to show it. A joyful horseback ride and everyone sitting in a bar safe and sound isn’t threatening or depressing enough to warrant a cheering up session. Plus the song itself doesn’t add anything to the overall story.
27.  The Girl Who Has Everything
Tumblr media
Sometimes I think the writers were willing trying to sabotage themselves. It’s as if they were determined to make the only two main female characters in the show unlikeable bitches in season three.   Don’t believe me? The creator Chris has said this song only exists to highlight how much easier Rapunzel has things than Cass and went onto say that Rapunzel was in the wrong during their conflict because ‘she held Cassandra back’. (Oh yeah she totally ‘held back’ the grown woman who left on her own accord, returned on her own accord, and then assaulted and tried to murder a bunch of people for no reason of her own accord.) But this song does succeed in furthering season’s three narrative that Rapunzel is a spoiled selfish brat. Shame the story fails to address this setup and never has Rapunzel learn to be a better person. Rather the narrative bends over backward to tell us how special Rapunzel is without any sense of self awareness and this song falls into that same trap; making it both irritating and pointless.
26. Listen Up
Tumblr media
Yeah, I talked about this on my salt marathon, but I just don't like this song very much. The melody is fine but the lyrics are a real miss in my mind. It doesn’t help matters that the song is indeed pointless in the grand scheme of things.
25.  Livin’ the Dream
Tumblr media
This is much on the same level as Listen Up as it features the same problems. It doesn’t add to the narrative and the lyrics kind of let it down. I placed it higher just because I like the melody a little more.
24.  More of Me
Tumblr media
This song is a lot like the Friendship Song in that it was created to be an end credit song for the pop charts and you’d be forgiven in forgetting it even exists. However, it at least got to actually play all the way through. I think this song was a real missed opportunity. I honestly believe that it should have been the opening theme song of the show instead of Wind in My Hair. It’s more built to serve such a purpose and it’s a waste of resources not to actually use it. Alternatively, I would have accepted it being reworked into the actual series as a character song. Especially since we’re missing a song in season three due to budget cuts.
23. Wind In My Hair
Tumblr media
Speaking of theme songs, I think I would like Wind In My Hair a lot better if i didn’t have to listen to it every episode. On its own it actually has a lot of things going for it; a nice melody, interesting instrumentals, good singing, ect. Unfortunately it’s just over exposed, and none of those elements lend themselves naturally to an intro song for a tv show. In fact the theme song feels really out of place and is edited oddly to fit the shorter intro.
22. Wind In My Hair (Reprise)
Tumblr media
Honestly the theme song is mostly comprised of this reprise, but it has the opening instrumentals from the OG song frankensteined onto it. This means that the version that plays before every episode is on fullblast all the time to keep the energy up, but that’s not how the song is suppose to go.  The actual reprise that plays in the pilot builds to a crescendo, starting soft and melancolony and getting louder and more hopeful and determined. It sounds a lot better in full because of that.  It’s still too overexposed though. Both these songs would probably be higher on the list of not for the theme song version.
21. With You by My Side
Tumblr media
This song is fine. It’s nothing special, but it’s not bad either. What knocks it down the list is the fact that Lance isn’t in it, despite Lance being right there.  Like don't bother hiring a famous Broadway singer if you’re not going to have him sing!  But that speaks more to the poor writing of season two than anything else. This song also doesn’t really add anything to the narrative as, contrary to what the writers intended, it doesn’t actually enhance the emotional impact of Cassandra’s betrayal later in the episode. The song itself is just tacked on and doesn’t take the opportunity to lay down any foreshadowing for that plot point.
20. Next Stop Anywhere
Tumblr media
Another perfectly serviable song. It’s not bad but nothing outstanding. It gets the job done. It’s also really ho-hum and the soundtrack keeps all the unneeded dialogue, which is a pet peeve of mine.
19. Waiting In the Wings
Tumblr media
Despite it’s hype, I never thought much of Waiting in the Wings. It’s got nice instrumentals and Eden Espinosa gives it her all in the singing department. The problem is it’s too generic. It’s a bare bones basic ass ‘I want song’. Cassandra's movations are weak and unsupported by the narrative, the melody is boring, and it honestly doesn’t add anything to her story. I mean it should, it’s her character solo, but because she’s written so poorly the song just winds up undermining the character in the end.   All I’m saying is that, this is not the song from season two that I would have nominated for the Emmys. But it’s still Alan Menken, it’s still nicely performed, and given the rest of the competition for that year, it did deserve to win.
18. If I Could Take That Moment Back
Tumblr media
This song is also pretty generic, but it’s less boring than I See the Light, (yeah, I said it, I See the Light is boring) so that’s a win in my book. Ergo this holds the title of the only New Dream duet that I enjoy. But there’s better stuff on this list.
17. Next Stop Anywhere (Reprise)
Tumblr media
Well no, I take that back. The reprise of Next Stop Anywhere is also technically a New Dream duet. It’s still not anything amazing, but it works for what it is. Plus, Adria’s opening dialogue in the soundtrack version doesn’t bother me quite as much as some of the other dialogues choices that were kept in.
16. Stronger Than Ever Before
Tumblr media
I really enjoyed this song in the moment. It’s catchy and fun, and it finally has Lance doing something rather than ignoring his existence. However it is borderline unnecessary in terms of story placement, and I’m slightly mad at it now that I know that we could have gotten a Rapunzel and Varian duet but it was scrapped for this instead.
15. Crossing the Line
Tumblr media
Keeping with the theme of ‘songs I have conflicting emotions about’, we have Crossing the Line.  This song is confused. It starts and stops, the melody isn’t clear, the orchestration is playing tug of war with the singers for dominance, and it’s basically Alan Menken and the show’s creators ripping off Frozen. (I guess he’s kicking himself for leaving that particular project?)   But it’s interesting. I never heard anything quite like it. It’s memorable even if it doesn’t fully work. It’s got these interesting bits and pieces to it that just never quite comes together as a whole. Some of the lyrics are some of the best Glenn Slater has ever wrote and is far better than the story actually surrounding the song. Yet there’s other lines that are total cringe. Sometimes the song is bold and catchy and gets you all hyped up, and then other times its limp and staggering and feels so awkward to listen to.  Yet it’s not boring or generic and so I have to place it higher than the rest of the songs that’s come before. (Also, there’s some amazing orchestral covers out there that really pulls together the various parts really well, just fyi)
14.  Nothing Left to Lose
Tumblr media
I really don't like this song.  I’ve been one of its biggest critics ever since it was leaked by the marketing team earlier this year.  And yet... I can’t in good conscience place any lower on this list.  All of the problems I have with it are the exact same problems I have with Crossing the Line. It’s confused, the various pieces don't line up, the instrumentals are competing with the vocals, the song’s progression is weird with it’s constant key changes, some of the lyrics are good while others are absolute shit, ect and so forth.  It also actively works against the story it's trying to tell. The song wants you to sympathize with Cassandra, but her lines are as shallow as a puddle and makes her look like a sociopath. Especially when she’s physically attacking Varian through out for no reason. Also neither character learns anything from the exchange and it fails to impact the story.  By all accounts this is a bad song.  But I’m Varian trash.  There I said it. You happy?  Varian’s parts in the songs are fine, good even, and the song is anything but bland. I would rather listen to a mess then be bored to tears by a competent yet standard four chord pop song.
13. I’d Give Anything
Tumblr media
This song is nice to listen to. Story wise it absolutely sucks and shouldn’t have been in the finale at all. But it sounds pleasant.  This is one of those songs that could pop up randomly on the radio and I would just think it it a nice sad break up song. I can’t say that about some of the other misplaced songs in the show. This one however, you can very much, absolutely divorce this song from the narrative and it would be fine.  Now that’s not good writing, and it’s very much a waste of limited resources, but I’m rating the music here first and story second.
12. Buddy Song
Tumblr media
The Buddy Song also absolutely did not need to exist but it also sounds nice. Plus, it makes use of Lance so I’m a little more lenient towards it.   I can’t however place it higher since it really is just Alan Menken ripping off Alan Menken. Like, I would not be at all surprised to find out that this was originally a deleted song for Aladdin or something.
11. Bigger Than That
Tumblr media
What can I say, Lance just gets good songs. When the show bothers to give them to him.  Unfortunately, it’s not the best placed. It kind of interrupts the more important drama of Be Very Afraid, and probably should have been saved for a later episode. Especially since it hinges on a plot point that is contradictory to Lance’s character.    We should have gotten a Varian and Rapunzel duet here and given Lance his own episode in the second half of season three. This song could have easily been refitted into being a bonding moment for him and the girls. That would also have filled out the season’s original songs to the usual eight instead of only  seven.
10. Life After Happily Ever After
Tumblr media
Now we’re getting to the good stuff. The top ten. The best of the best.  This song makes the cut for three reasons.  1. It lyrically and musically interesting 2. It does the job of furthering the story and the characters  and 3. Eugene’s part is so damn good.  Like this song could have easily fell down into the ranks of ‘fine but generic’ if it wasn’t for the bridge with Eugene. That puts it over the top and to my mind makes it better than anything from the OG film. (well almost anything, Mother Knows Best is still great)    This is the barometer by which I measure all of the music in the series. Is it better or worse than Life After Happily Ever After? Because this is the level that I equate good musicals with.  What keeps on the tenth spot and not higher is the dialogue that still left on the soundtrack and the lack of a Cassandra introduction. That and also the rest of the songs are just flat better.
9. Hurt Incantation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hurt, Decay, Reverse, whatever you want to call it, this was such a cool fucking concept. One that was utterly wasted by the show.  I place this so high because it just sounds awesome! It looks good too, and it offered up so many possibilities from a story perspective.  What lets it down is the lack of follow up for it and it’s too short. There’s needed to be another verse. It also should have been on the actual soundtrack instead of  Hook Foot’s Ballad.  (The Heal Incantation also was sung in What the Hair, but I’m not counting it since it was written for the film)
8.  The Girl Who Has Everything (Reprise)
Tumblr media
I hate the initial song and the set up that it took to get here, but I love this reprise. It’s perfect. This is what the story needed more of. Rapunzel taking her life into her hands, and her proposing to Eugene would have been the perfect capstone for her arc.  In fact I’m angry we didn’t actually get that. There’s absolutely no reason why Rapunzel couldn’t have done so and we could have had her and Eugene engaged during the second half of season three. How much better would have it been if Cassandra threatened their wedding plans and that’s why they couldn’t go through with it until after the series ended? So much more tension that way.
7. I Got This
Tumblr media
This is a really good song that actually futhers the characters and the narrative. Moreover it’s refreshing to see the heroine not be perfect and to fail sometimes due to her own inadequacies. It’s just a shame that the series didn’t follow through with this set up, but I appreciate the attempt all the same.
6.  Set Yourself Free
Tumblr media
This is the only song in the series that’s an actual satisfying pay off for anything. Music wise it’s nothing too special, but in terms of context it just works. We were sorely deprived of such resolutions and songs with actual meaning in the show.
5. View From Up Here
Tumblr media
This song is too good for the episode it actually appears in. We needed something like this back in season one to introduce Cassandra with. It also sadly doesn’t fit with the wider narrative after season three. However I shall still appreciate it as a ‘what might have been’ type song.
4.  Let Me Make You Proud
Tumblr media
The only reason why this song isn’t higher is just overexposure and I’ve no one to blame but myself for that. I’ve listened to this song way too many times. As such it tends to alternate between this, View from Up Here, and the next song on the list. But make no mistake it is glorious. Fantastic instrumentals, set up, and of course amazing vocals.
3.  Everything I Ever Thought I Knew
Tumblr media
Yes, I know this plot point didn’t lead anywhere, but it works for this song at least. Also Eugene’s VA is a really underrated singer. He sounds nice and he emotes really well.  Though I’ll be honest, this jumped up to third place because it was fresh in my mind after listening to the soundtrack before making this list. I’ve always liked the song and I do rate it highly, but it can change places with Let Me Make You Proud and View from Up Here at anytime depending on my mood.
2.  Let Me Make You Proud (Reprise)
Tumblr media
This song is heartbreaking!  Story wise it probably shouldn’t exist because it gives away the twist too soon, but who cares, it’s awesome!  Varian’s arc is the most compelling in the show and the only thing that saves TTS from falling into mediocre obscurity; and it’s songs like this that help make the arc stand out even more than it already does.
1. Ready As I’ll Ever Be
Tumblr media
I said it before and I’ll say it again; Ready As I’ll Ever Be is the greatest thing Alan Menken has ever written in his entire career!  If you know anything about the multiple award winning songwriter then you know that is no faint praise and I do not dole it out lightly.  This song is the reason why this show even has a fanbase. People are still getting into the series because of this song. And no matter how many times you listen to it just rocks!   It’s complex, layered, moody, and with a fantastic beat and energy. The performances are wonderful and the instrumentation glorious. It belongs in the hollows of Disney’s greatest hits and not regulated to a spin-off tv show that failed to make its money back.  I weep for the lost potential that this song and this show had. It hurts to know that so many people will never see this flash of brilliance that has come out of the House of Mouse, will never know the wonderfulness that is Varian.  Ah, ‘c'est la vie’, I suppose. Tangled the Series got what it deserved, but it's crew did not. While I can not in all honesty recommend the series in full; I do sincerely urge any Disney fan to check out the songs at the very least. Especially this one.  And that’s it. There’s my official ranking of all the songs, and I hope those of you read my Tangled reviews appreciate the hours it took into making this.

Pokemon Legendary Themes Ranked
I saw a video of a youtuber I like doing this tier list so I thought I’d get my own opinions in first so I’m not biased by theirs. This list is a little incomplete- there’s a few things I know are missing, most pointedly side game stuff, but I suppose they can’t win em all. Thus, here are my objectively factual opinions, no nostalgia bias here surely. Here’s a link to the list in case you want to do the same.
(Tiers are sorted in increasing quality right to left)

Mewtwo (FRLG): Y’all know Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres also use this, right? It’s just a marginally more dramatic version of the regular wilds music, so it gets the fail from me.
Mew (Emerald): This is the same as the last one! Except it gets the edge because it is slightly higher pitched, and because it’s in a game where it’s not a remix of a song you’ve just heard dozens of times.
Mewtwo (XY): I just really dislike the soundfont XY uses for most of its themes. This sounds like a shitty youtube remix from the late 00s with like 300 views, and most of them are the same person who really likes the song for some reason. Am I just biased against the kanto wilds theme? Maybe.
Regis (Crown Tundra): Narrowly dodges being the worst Regis theme since the Platinum one exists (It’s not on this list though). I think a lot of the more recent versions of older themes suffer since they were designed with the lesser hardware in mind. It is a shame because I do really like some of the additions to the theme.
Tumblr media
C Tier
Dynamax Legend (Crown Tundra): Mewtwo is already back for his last appearance on the list. It’s just a remix of the max raid theme, which I don’t really care for- especially after hearing it over and over and over again grinding Lairs for shinies.
Calyrex (Crown Tundra): This song being dramatic makes no sense in universe- the player knows this is the big legendary, but the character sure doesn’t- but it ultimately feels hollow. This is deliberate, since it’s actually just one half of another song.
Steeds (Crown Tundra): h o n s e theme is the other half of that song, and it’s the better half, but its still incomplete.
Aura Trio (X/Y) and Solgaleo/Lunala (S/M): These two get lumped together because I always get them conflated, which signifies to me that neither has made a strong impact. Listening to both again, I think I like the latter more, but it’s narrow.
Regis (ORAS): It’s just not the same without the horns. My gen 6 bias is showing, but I don’t really like the soundfont.
Deoxys (ORAS): similar to the Regis, this is held back by the soundfont (why the fuck is there an organ in this??) but also by the fact that at this point, the Deoxys theme just isn’t special anymore. And that’s kinda sad.
Calyrex 2 (Crown Tundra): The full version of this theme is much better, obviously, sounding suitably regal for the king of the tundra, but it overall lands at a meh. The percussion sounds like it’s trying to rip off the Weather Trio’s, which is a big no-no.
Tumblr media
B Tier
Eternatus 1 (SwSh): We are now entering the songs I like zone. Eternatus 1 goes in a lot of different directions, and despite how 13-year-old me would balk at it I actually enjoy the dubsteppy bits of it. Sorry to disappoint you, you edgy fuck.
Ultra Beasts (SMUSUM): I don’t know why these are separated, they’re the same theme. I really like the UB theme, but the thing is it isn’t really a legendary theme- it had to be a bit less bombastic seeing as you can just encounter a bunch of these bad bois. And while it sounds suitably alien, I still think it doesn’t belong on this list.
Weather Trio (ORAS): Why is this listed as this, its just for Rayquaza. Extremely dramatic, but a retread of one of my S-tier picks (spoilers oops) and not different enough for the remaster to make it worth it.
Primals (ORAS): the same as the previous, but I do like this much better, what with the song “reverting” to the original every so often. This should probably be higher, but I don’t want to separate it from the “full” version.
Eternatus 2: It’s kind of a shame how little time you get to hear this, because it’s a big ol “you’re fucked” and that’s pretty great. There are bits of this that sound like they’re sampling Kirby Super Star, and I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Galar Birds (Crown Tundra): While I know everyone used to adore this one, I think the honeymoon phase is over for me at this point. I still like it, but at the end of the day it’s still a Kanto Wild remix.
Legendary (BWB2W2): This is really good! The way the tempo shifts around the song is a really nice touch, and that build section is excellent. Just a solid overall theme.
Tao Trio (BW): Reshiram and Zekrom’s themes are slightly different, but even Game Freak forgot that one. Kyurem’s is the same but where they have different SFX it just has dead air, which while fitting is a bit less good. I adore the beat this one has running, almost a throbbing bit going on there.  Edit: Ok on relisten I’ve heard Kyurem’s a bit closer, and it’s a little different with some record skips, but they’re pretty unecessary imo.
Zacian/Zamazenta (SwSh): This is one I kinda wish was less dramatic, considering it’s not as oh shit as the situations their other themes have. I kinda hate the opening to this, but the rest of it makes up for it I suppose.
Eternatus 3: Yeah this is a Z/Z theme not an Eternatus theme let’s be real. A suitably triumphant third act to the climax of SwSh’s (lackluster) story. This is kinda just a banger, very much appropriate for the beatdown it accompanies.
Dialga/Palkia (DPPt): Closing the tier with a song that I actually love, but it’s occurred to me that it’s a little odd sitting next to some of these other ones. I mean, it’s mostly built around this very pretty little piano line, which makes it feel less weighty than the competition. It’s a classic, and hasn’t aged poorly or anything, but it’s less of a climax than I would expect. With that in mind, I shudder to think of what would happen to this in a potential remake.
 A Tier
Tumblr media
Mysterious Being (SwSh): This is getting carried here by that bass alone. The rest of it is ok I guess.
Arceus (DPPt): Ah, the track no one ever got to hear. I really love how sparse this is, being basically only percussion most of the way through. I think the Arceus event is something we should have actually gotten to experience, I’m pretty sure it would have blown little me’s mind.
Lugia (HGSS): HGSS, the games where every legendary got its own theme. Bring this back please, I’m begging here. I understand the reason this sounds the way it does is because it’s based on the Shadow Lugia theme from XD, but I haven’t played that one, so I can’t comment. I’m sure not complaining, though- considering Lugia’s other main appearance (in the movie, of course) I wasn’t expecting such a menacing theme.
Legendary (DPPt): For a “generic” theme (fucking Rotom gets this btw) this has a lot going for it. The animation that plays when you start a fight with this music is burned into my brain. It’s fast, it’s tense, and it sounds great.
Lake Trio (DPPt): Unlike Mysterious Being, while the bass slays here, it’s not alone carrying the song. This track was always my favourite out of Diamond and Pearl, and those games have a fucking great soundtrack, so.
Black/White Kyurem (B2W2): I really love that this is a remix of the (also very menacing) theme you hear when you boot the game up- you’ve heard a version of this while staring at the fucker, now here’s the real version for when you have to fight it. The references to the regular Tao Trio theme are well placed, but this more bombastic version sounds like Kyurem is here to fucking kill you, which to be fair, it kinda is.
Legendary Beasts (Crystal/HGSS): I’m lumping these together since, although HGSS gave each their own remix, they’re basically the same theme. This was the first Legendary music ever written for the series, and it still holds up really well. As for the HGSS remixes, I don’t think Entei’s slower rockier version works as well, but I really like the punchy percussion on Raikou’s version.
Regis (RSE): Hella bass and Hoenn Horns? What’s not to love? I do think the original version of this theme is by far the best one, being an ample payoff for the puzzle that was getting to it in the first place, and it makes hurling balls at the golem’s much more tolerable. I literally never caught Registeel as a kid so I could go back and listen to this whenever I wanted.
Tapus (SMUSUM): Again, why are these separated. Considering this game has literal aliens in it, the Tapu theme in SM is somehow the most messed up sounding one, but it works extremely well. The surprise vocalisations work really well with the… I’m hesitant to say tribal, but I don’t have another word for that vibe to be honest. It does feel like you’re doing a transgression with this song, which you are (why the fuck are you allowed to catch these things in universe lmao).
Ultra Necrozma (USUM): Probably the most climactic song in the entire franchise, and it makes sense- this isn’t just the climax of those games, but the finisher to the entire 3DS era of the series. The church organs, therefore, are pretty justified. This song sounds like a Big Deal, and the organ getting pretty jazzy when it gets to some of the less intense bits is a really nice little touch. And then the percussion picks up again and oh fuck here we goooooo. A fitting track for arguably one of the hardest fights in the entire franchise.
 S Tier
Tumblr media
Dusk Mane/Dawn Wings Necrozma (USUM): Haha oops I like this one more than Ultra. I think it’s just the unstoppable percussion that opens this that does it. I don’t think anyone who went in blind saw this moment in the games coming, and the intensity reflects this- its like a prelude to Ultra but it doesn’t have as much of a low point, with the onslaught of noise fitting the sheer OH FUCK that is seeing everyone’s favourite bag-dodger getting bodyjacked out of nowhere.
Weather Trio (RSE): Anyone who understands my bias is gonna understand this one. It’s almost entirely carried by nostalgia, but I just love this fucking song. Compared to some of the other things on this list, it feels nearly minimalistic, seeing as it’s pretty much just the drums, horns, and that bell, but that’s all it needs. It’s the first song in the series for a proper legendary, and it suits that fact.
Deoxys (FRLG/E): By contrast, the Deoxys theme is pushing that GBA soundfont to its absolute limit. You can hear some of the best of both the FRLG and RSE soundtracks in this song, with the Kanto percussion and the Hoenn horns both doing their part, but whatever instruments the rest of this is going for are absolutely not slouching either. It’s somewhat telling that the best soundtracks for FRLG romhacks (e.g. Clover) sound more like this than like the other themes in the game.
Ho-Oh (HGSS): Oh fuck is that a koto I love kotos. By contrast with Lugia, Ho-oh is a more relaxed track that takes a lot from traditional Japanese instruments, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dramatic- far from it. The groove in this makes it sound like it comes from another series entirely, being so incredibly different from anything else the series had to offer at that point. That main riff is so fucking perfect, man.
Giratina (Platinum): I remember having my mind blown when I first heard this. Giratina went from the generic DP legendary music (which is obviously still good) to this chaotic energetic power play, and I was sold on Platinum immediately (like everything before XY, Platinum came out in Japan some months before in other countries, so I heard this well before the game dropped). This song has so many different lines, so many different builds, and yet none of them feel out of place. I almost feel like this song is what started me down the path that would lead to me being a prog fan. After the haunting ambience of the Distortion World, this sheer energy is such a shock to the system, and the climax of the song hits harder than any individual moment on any other song in the series. It’s my number 1 pick, and I love it to bits.
Thus, the full list is as follows. If you end up doing your own, link me up, I’d love to see how wrong you are your opinions.

My thoughts on the Sanders Sides Spotify playlists- Janus Edition!
Note: this is Purely me saying whether or not I like the songs, not theorising about any deeper meanings. I’ve done them all, so just click on the names to see my reactions to the others: Virgil, Patton, Roman, Logan
Impressions from looking through the playlist: Ok. So I am pumped by some of the songs on this playlist. Seriously. Prepare for my excitement over certain songs.
1: ‘Black Hole Sun’, by Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox, Haley Reinhart. So, this made me realise the original version of black hole sun isn’t in my 32 hour playlist, even though it’s an iconic song, so that’s been remedied! This cover was really cool, and also somehow more Janus-ey. Also I was gonna call bs on Janus’ intro just based on hearing this one song, but then I remembered lyings kinda His Thing so it was probably very purposeful. This is now on the 32 hour playlist.
2: ‘It Seemed the Better Way’, by Leonard Cohen. I mean, it’s Leonard Cohen, so obviously I liked this. It’s Leonard Cohen. It only made it to the 32 hour playlist though.
3: ‘Anywhere’, by The Scarring Party. This was jaunty, and another one I could easily imagine doing tap to! It ended up in the 32 hour playlist, but I don’t think I’ll specifically seek it out at any point in the future.
4: ‘Talking At The Same Time’, Tom Waits. This one I was a bit iffy on. It was interesting, it just wasn’t necessarily my cup of tea. I wouldn’t skip it in the future, but it’s not on my 32 hour playlist.
5: ‘all the good girls go to hell’, by Billie Eilish. This one was already on the 32 hour playlist, because Billie Eilish is iconic. Relistening to it on here prompted me to put it on the 10 hour playlist. Honestly, most of Billie Eilish’s songs belong on the ten hour playlist. I might go ahead and add them all. They are where they belong now.
6: ‘Denial’, by The Vaccines. This song was a bop!! It’s on the 32 hour playlist now, and I snorted at the combo of title and band. (get vaccinated, kids!)
7: ‘Trust In Me’, Scarlett Johanson. I haven’t seen the live action jungle book, but this song was good! It’s been ages since I saw the original as well, so I couldn’t tell you if i liked it more or less than the og version, but I liked it enough to add to the 32 hour playlist.
8: ‘Razzle Dazzle’, by Richard Gere. Over ten years of doing dance means that I’ve heard most of Chicago’s soundtrack through my jazz classes. This was no exception, and is on my 32 hour playlist now although it also made me feel sad again about the fact that I had to quit for medical reasons (but didn’t make me as sad as all that jazz, cell block tango, or we both reached for the gun would have). God I miss dance.
9: ‘When the Chips Are Down’, by Anais Mitchell, The Haden Triplets. One day, I’ll be able to watch hadestown. I mean. It’s a Greek mythology inspired musical. It‘s gotta be iconic. And also, this song was cool! It’s now on my 32 hour playlist.
10: ‘Mandy Goes To Med School’, by The Dresden Dolls. This one was interesting! It took me a while to work out how I felt about it, but I eventually decided I liked it enough for it to at least go onto the 32 hour playlist.
11: ‘I Put A Spell On You’, Nina Simone. Does anyone not like at least one version of this song? Because if so I’d like to meet them. This got added to the 32 hour playlist.
12: ‘Evil Night Together’, by Jill Tracy. This was cool as hell, very dark Disney-villain esque. It’s now in in my 32 hour playlist!!
13: ‘Cabaret: Don’t Tell Mama’ by John Kander, Joel Grey, Jill Haworth. Y’all can probably guess my thoughts on this song if you’ve read my other reactions, given it’s a showtune. It’s on the 32 hour playlist now.
14: ‘You’re a Cad’, the bird and the bee. The title of this song made me smile, and I ended up really liking it so I was glad! The only reason it’s not on my 10 hour playlist is I can’t decide if it feels like ‘normal people’ music enough. I might just add it, I think my mum would get a chuckle out of it if it played while we were baking together at least, and it feels like it would garner more amused looks than confused ones.
15: ‘As Far As I Can See’, by Phantogram. This song was a Bop! An unusual bop, but a bop nonetheless. ‘Tis now on the 32 hour playlist.
16: ‘Criminal’, by Fiona Apple. This song was a vibe. I really liked it!! It was only added to the 32 hour playlist, but it was cool.
17: ‘Change’, by Lana Del Ray. I really liked this one! I mean, I’m not shocked as I don’t think I’ve heard a Lana Del Ray song and Disliked it, but I liked the vibe of this one. It’s one the 32 hour playlist now!!
18: ‘Devil In The Details’, by Bright Eyes. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this, given I really didn’t like the Bright Eyes song on Virgils playlist, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one! I didn’t love it, but I liked it enough to add to the 32 hour playlist.
19: ‘Come Little Children’, by Erutan. Y’all know how at the start I got Really Excited about a song being on this playlist? Yeah. That was this one. An online friend sent me two of Erutan’s songs late last year (this one and the willow maid) and I Loved Them. I should probably add the rest of her songs to my 32 hour playlist. I just,,, hhh they’re So Good.
20: ‘Into The Unknown’, by The Blasting Company. This song was really good! It made me sway lightly in my chair, and got added to the 32 hour playlist.
Final thoughts: Before I actually looked at the songs in this one, I was not expecting to end up liking it this much. At the start, I figured I’d like Roman’s or maybe Patton’s the best. This one, however fit more into the corner of music with one off songs I love, rather than the music that I just like. My favourite New song would be you’re a cad. 19/20 were added to the 32 hour playlist, and 2 to the 10 hour one. I’ll reblog all of these posts later (when more people are likely to see it) with the updated times of said ‘32’ and ‘10’ hour playlists, as well as a link to said playlists in case the couple of people that see these are interested.

Music Reflection II, Early 2000s' was a Trip
Well, it has been a hot minute since I wrote a music reflection post. Last time, I talked about various songs from my childhood from the likes of Britney Spears to Stevie Brock. Now I am back to tackle some more music from my most formative years that will make you question how my music taste ever escaped cringy pop music from the Top 40. Coincidentally, all of these tracks are from the early 2000s’ so no 90s’ music here today. Here we go…
Miracles Happen by Myra
This song is the anthem ofThe Princess Diaries. That movie was one of my most watched VHS tapes next to the first Harry Potter film. It is the movie that sparked my interest in film soundtracks, and one of the most recognizable and memorable songs from the album was easily Myra's Miracles Happen.
It can be easy to forget how much work was once put into acquiring music in an age where most music is available instantaneously. As a kid, my ear was always turned toward the music in any given film and when I got to an age (around 9-10) when I realized these tracks were sold in one package known as the film soundtrack, I made a point to get my hands on a copy. The Princess Diaries is the first soundtrack I remember owning outside of soundtracks from Disney films.
My most stark memories with this soundtrack are playing it in my bedroom at my old house. Toward the end of our time living there, my family painted my bedroom a light pink and I got a desk that had a CD rack built-in (this was a big feature at the time). My boombox sat on the large desktop against the wall and I can remember listening to The Princess Diaries soundtrack on repeat. There are a lot of great tracks on the album but Miracles Happen is the true star and the true representation of the movie.
Before I talk about the track further, I just want to point out that this movie is great. We could talk about its problems, which it has many, but it remains funny, heartwarming, and a joy to watch from start to finish. This movie introduced me to Anne Hathaway and she just shines. Plus, Julie Andrews is in the movie and she steals the show! I know my opinion is partially influenced by nostalgia goggles but hey...just let me have this!
Back to Miracles Happen. What is easily the strongest aspect of the song is the chorus. It is so catchy and fun to listen to. The verses are enjoyable enough, but they feel a bit detached from what makes the song so good. The bridge is pretty lackluster. As discussed a bit in my first reflection, way too many songs struggle with their bridges. Look, I get it...but still. The only shining light is that the bridge at least transitions into a tune that sounds similar to the chorus which is pretty great.
The lyrics are fairly generic which is par for the course. They say a bunch of random things like "we found the missing pieces" and "nothing should ever bring you down", lyrics that have little to no emotional attachment to anything beyond it is a thing people say in this context. But all things considered, it is still a really fun song to listen to.
It Happens Every Time by Dream Street
Dream Street is one of those boy bands that flew pretty far beneath the radar for most people. Their first album released in 2000 and I distinctly remember the marketing campaign on television playing over and over again so that they were drilled into our brains. I guess it worked because I really wanted this album as a ten-year-old.
My friends and I loved Dream Street. I had their poster hanging on my bedroom wall (their album booklet unfolded into the poster). We made up dance routines to their songs. We even blasted the music through my friend’s house and somehow her parents never became angry with us. My most shameful confession about Dream Street is that we used to try and find their phone numbers to call them. Unaware that phone books are limited to local numbers, we would call random numbers to see if Chris or Jesse were home to talk. They weren't, and people were annoyed by our calls.
One thing people probably don't know is that Jesse McCartney's music career began with Dream Street. I'm proud to say that he was my favorite from the group at the time, and vocally he is the strongest of the group. His voice had not matured yet so it is always fun listening to his performance with his young voice!
It Happens Every Time was their big single and the song most used in TV adverts, accompanied by the music video. What got me thinking about the song and the group recently is due to some unfortunate events. I learned back in July that one of the members, Chris, died in June due to complications with COVID-19. He would have been 35 this year. Chris was often looked at as the Justin Timberlake of Dream Street. He had the fancy frost tipped hair and swagger to him that the other members couldn't compete with. After the group disbanded, he never found success in the same way he did with Dream Street. He died too young and too soon. After his death, I started relistening to Dream Street and it was this relisten that encouraged me to write another Music Reflection.
As with Stevie Brock from the first installment of Music Reflections, Dream Street's songs mostly center on their lust for girls in a way that is pretty uncomfortable looking back. These boys range in age from 11-13 if I am not mistaken, and their songs deal with mature themes that predate their young years. Not to mention that society has young boys singing about these ideas that they can't help their actions when they lust for a girl or they can't control themselves because a girl has them wrapped around her finger. Our culture normalizes this idea that men are vulnerable to female woes and that they can't help themselves. It is always a bit gross hearing young boys sing about it, especially before they’ve even hit puberty (i.e. Justin Bieber).*
It Happens Every Time is a song about...a song. It follows a boy who hears a "silly little love song" every time he sees this girl or thinks of her. This plane of existence, a magic place where angels sing all around them, is known as Dream Street (name drop!). Admittedly, this song is probably the tamest when it comes to the themes I mentioned in the previous paragraph.
Now I won't lie, this song is a bop. I'm still unsure if that is the nostalgia talking or not...I will have to dig deeper some other time. But damn I'd be lying if I said I don't enjoy this song. It is so catchy. The boys sing really well for their age. I am a sucker for listening to little Jesse McCartney belt his heart out. Jesse is the highlight of this song, getting a nice solo line toward the end of the second chorus followed by the entire bridge and some overlapping vocals in the final chorus before ending the song. He just sounds so good and I will admit to feeling a small sense of pride listening to him. I was there before his solo career and entry into Radio Disney hits and commercials all over ABC Family. Sometimes it feels like Dream Street is still so unknown that I can keep my memories of them all to myself. Though their time was short-lived, they stayed with me and so has this song.
Ordinary Day by Vanessa Carlton
Earlier, I talked about how difficult it was to acquire music before the internet. In the case of a song in a movie, there was a good chance that the song you liked would be on the soundtrack, provided a soundtrack was even released. Songs on the radio were difficult because you had to buy an entire album when you just liked one song, or make sure you had a blank tape ready to record when the song came on. Then there were songs you heard while out and about with no context. Those were the worst because you had to try and memorize the song and hope you found it somewhere, someday. That was kind of what happened to me with Vanessa Carlton.
It was her song A Thousand Miles that really gripped me as a 12-year-old. I loved it so much and heard it everywhere I went but never knew who sang the song or where I could get a copy. Eventually, I heard the song on the radio and bought her album...and ended up only listening to the three tracks I liked. One of the tracks, and my favorite of those three, is Ordinary Day.
If my memory is correct, this song was never as popular as A Thousand Miles on the radio, but it was super popular on the internet. This album came out around the time I first started using the internet and discovered movie montages. I don't mean montages used in movies but montages made by fans on Windows Movie Maker, cut together with a somewhat fitting song. If you were a teenager obsessing over Disney or Harry Potter or...something, you know the songs that people generally gravitated towards with these videos (the band Trading Yesterday were a staple of these montages). Ordinary Day was a movie montage song (every time I listen to this song it reminds me of an Aladdin montage it played over (which I sadly can't find)).
I decided to watch the music video for this song as I was writing this and boy is it a product of the early 2000s. Can we all just agree that the early 2000s were equivalent to that awkward stage of everyone's lives that we try not to think about? This music video is so clumsy and confusing. There are so many close up shots on Carlton and strange shots of people making out. Who thought this was a good idea?
But back to the song. One thing I appreciate about this song is how it builds itself up. The beginning piano is very nice but then it builds up with orchestration and I love it. I'm sorry I can't talk about it more but I won't embarrass myself with lack of musical instrumental lingo and knowledge.
The lyrics of the song are...ehh? The song is basically about seeing more in the ordinary and how the narrator is shown from an "ordinary boy." It isn't terrible but like the music video, a product of the early 2000s.
I unapologetically love this song. Yes it is corny and it isn't as musically sophisticated as I would like, but it always makes me smile when I listen to it. I can remember listening to the song on my headphones on long car rides and with friends. It is just a song that makes me feel happy and gives me no reason to feel otherwise.
All I Can Do by Jump5
Well...I'm surprised it took me this long to arrive at Jump5. What is there to say about this Christian pop sensation? Quite a bit actually. I was only obsessed with them for a good chunk of my early teens. Reflecting on that time of my life is strange because in hindsight, it was such a short period but it always feels like it lasted much longer.
Everyone has that one band that they really connect with as a teenager that basically shapes their entire life and...well, yeah, that band for me is Jump5. I'm not kidding, I could write an entire book about how this band shaped my entire life (and believe me, I am working on it!). As much as I'd like to talk about all of that, we only have a short amount of time so let's talk about this song.
As with Ordinary Day, this song reeks of the early 2000s. However, unlike Ordinary Day, the music video is much more successful in its execution. I couldn't believe myself when rewatching it...it is actually pretty darn good as far as music videos tend to be.
Choosing what Jump5 song to talk about was pretty difficult because there are so many in their arsenal that I can talk about for long periods of time and connect to life experiences. But All I Can Do seems to be a special one because I'm almost certain it was the first track I ever heard from the group. As with Dream Street, Jump5 had a big TV marketing campaign for their second album, All the Time in the World (in which All I Can Do is the first track). It was their TV advert that put them on the radar for me. I vividly remember seeing the commercial at Christmas time. It was the first Christmas spent at our new house and I can remember watching the TV with my gifts and snow falling outside. At this point, seeing pop bands advertised on TV was nothing new. There were always new groups trying to make it big as other pop acts had before them. But other than my memory of seeing this commercial, it otherwise didn't leave a big impact on me. I wouldn't start listening to Jump5 until a few months later after getting into Radio Disney. And even after I got into Jump5, All I Can Do was never one of their songs that I gravitated towards.
I wanted to talk about this song because of how well it represents Jump5 as a group. All I Can Do is their quintessential track, packed with energy and fun lyrics. But the track is also a representation of the group's core aesthetic of disguising "Christian values" as a pop song about a crush. For anyone who grew up on a Christian media diet (as I did voluntarily as a teenager), this is nothing out of the ordinary for this type of entertainment. In fact, it is basically a meme at this point. All I Can Do may be the least overt example of this from Jump5's library, but it is still an example nonetheless.
“It's like I got nothing to do but think about you,” (you being God), "I've got all the time in the world," (implying that time does not matter because in God you have everlasting life), "if you look at my heart, you'll know from the start," (meaning God knows your true heart and He knows from the start). I could go on but I think you see my point. There isn't anything inherently bad about this example and it is fairly harmless, but this isn't always the case when it comes to Christian entertainment.
Another trend from the late 90s' and early 2000s' was a pop group being a mix of both guys and girls but the guys rarely sang (A*Teens is another example that might come to mind). This song is dominated by the girls who share most of the song equally. The guys are hardly ever heard at all except when Chris gets his time to shine echoing the song's title over and over. It is easy to forget about them but alas, they are there.
Jump5 were known for their dance routines that they performed alongside their songs. They would often do cartwheels, flips, and very technical dance routines that blew many other pop acts out of the water. They also performed these routines live on tour, not just in their music videos. This dance routine is a really memorable one, showing the group doing a train-like dance which I remember performing with a friend. It is a lot of fun and I won't let anyone tell me otherwise! It was a lot of fun revisiting this track.
Is It Saturday Yet? by Nick Carter
Well here we are, at the final song, and boy is this choice...let's go with interesting. Nick Carter, known for his Backstreet Boy fame, recorded his own solo album after the group disbanded. What we got was Now or Never which is only ever remembered by the song Help Me, and even that is pretty forgettable. All that said, I owned this album and listened to it quite a bit as a tween. My most specific memory with the album is listening to it on a long car ride to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Is It Saturday Yet? is the seventh track on the album and out of the five tracks I liked, this was probably at the bottom.
So why talk about it if it was my least favorite track? Well friends, this track is so bizarre that I question its existence on a frequent basis. It is insane how often this song gets stuck in my head and won't leave.
The song seems to be about a disengaged teenager being raised by Jerry Springer and video games (video games got a low blow for warping kids brains back in the day. They still get blamed today but it isn't to the same extent) who just can't wait for Saturday to come so he can be rid of his responsibilities. The lyrics are...dumb. They are clearly trying to make a point but the song is so ridiculous that it is white noise. And why is it that Nick and Aaron Carter always have to reference each other in their songs? It was cute at first when Aaron did it in his classic track Oh Aaron, but now it is just old.
"Is it Saturday yet? Cause I wanna get up. Is it Saturday yet? It just feels like a Saturday. Maybe it's a Saturday." Those are the lyrics in the chorus. It is a song so devoid of meaning and so lazy to its very core. It contains lazy rhymes and brutal instrumentals. This song is the reason so many people describe pop music as empty trash. Like, don't get me wrong, a lot of music on the radio is pop trash and is clearly put together by big corporate higher-ups to make a quick buck on teenage stars locked in a contract. But some of that music is meaningful and deserves to be recognized. This song, however, deserves to die a painful death. It is just terrible.
And yet, despite all of this, the song somehow still appeals to me. I still listen to it. I still find joy out of it even though it is just awful in every possible way. I think that speaks to the whole point of these reflections on the music I listened to when I was younger.
Is It Saturday Yet? may be the worst of the bunch, but a lot of music cranked out back in the day was mindless entertainment. As much as it bothers me, I won't lie and say there is no place for music like this because there is. Sometimes when I am driving, I get so sick of the music I normally listen to ("good" music) and I just want music from my childhood that won't make me think but will just allow me to bake in nostalgic goodness.
Revisiting these songs was fun, but I know there are more I want to talk about in the future! Stay tuned! What are some songs you listened to in the early 2000s’ that make you feel super nostalgic today? Let me know in the comments!
* It should also be noted that the band broke up because of a lawsuit in which the majority of the parents of the band alleged that the underage band members were "exposed to booze, women, and pornography."

Frank thoughts on Fine Line
Today I discovered this blog and felt such relief! I truly thought I was going crazy, because of all the positive FL reviews (by people who are older than harries), but also twitter/tumblr praise from harries. I could not for the life of my understand how such a huge % of directioners stayed for this totally new sound. Were they faking loving 1D for 5 years? Or are they faking it now? Were they just super lucky that their taste "developed" from pop to psychedelics like harry's?
None of my friends listen to 1D as a band or any of the solos, so I couldn't ask them. I decided to google things like "HS2/FL flopped", "unpopular opinion: I don't like FL", "am i the only one who isn't digging HS2", "I'm falling asleep to HS2", but nothing was coming up (which is why I swear it's a miracle I found you!). Pages upon pages in google search were giving me 4-5* reviews of FL and fans being hysterical over this new aesthetic. I'm not usually the one affected by mass opinion, but I really started to question whether I understand anything about music and whether I really can't see a genius behind FL. The worst is that all tumblr-harries per-song-reviews were not articulate at all. Just "aaaaaaaa, this is aweeeeesome, hell yeah liKe WhaT eVen iS my bOOIII" or "i jUst CaNNNt this is the best what a time to be alive I'm gonna tell my kids that's their dad". BUT:
1) Lyrics on repeat - as a former larrie I thought that lyrics were almost his only chance to get the truth out. "the script was written and I could not change a thing, I want to rip it all to shreds and start again", "I've got scars even though they can't always be seen", "The shell of a man who could never be his best" speak volumes to me. These are actually sentences, not a repeat of one noun! (I think I'll make another post where I give the count the most used word in each song on FL). I don't care whether it's shrooms or not, tbh, I just want a melody and a chorus that I will not forget after 2 mins of finishing the song. When LP1 got out and everyone was saying "ugh, he repeats in-my-beeeeeeed like 50 times", I didn't know Harry would follow the suit. Don't even care whether the album is about his relationship with a man or a woman, because I thought Harry had so much depth that he could see the person for who they are rather than a gender. And it's true, he doesn't talk about getting lost in her eyes or missing her fingertips, nor does he talk about stripping her down or her getting on her knees. If with Larry songs there was at least a narrative of being caged by management and having to play pretence, then here I cannot fully invest into his struggles, worries, jealousy, pain, happiness, joy, discovery. Either because we didn't get that much Camille content or because he doesn't talk about his partner with depth of a human being? Dated for 6-10 months, broke up, got therapy is all I got out of it. He didn't have to dedicate a whole album to one relationship (even taylor had non-Joe songs on Lover like The Man, Soon you'll get better, Miss Americana) and I think he has so much more to say than he did! If I was a larrie, trying to make it seem like FL was about louis, I'd almost be disappointed by how shallow their soulmate-ship has become.
I know Harry is breaking the usual verse1-chorus-verse2-chorus-bridge-chorus template, but what we are left with is a broken record of a song! I am kinda jealous of all the people who can comment on the melodies separately from the lyrics, because the lyrics ruin everything for me. I actually wish someone would make FL with just the melodies so that I could appreciate 101 musical instruments that were involved!
2) Monotonous - meet me in the hallway and from the dining table grew on me like FL could never. I listened to the album around 10 times by now, trying to find gems. First I listened with very high expectations (thanks to all the reviews..), then I relistened straight away, didn't help. I gave it some more time, went back to HS1 etc. By the end of the day, I thought I should let my ears rest. The fact that many people say "oh, this one is great to listen to when driving along the beach", ummmm.. yeah, cuz most of his fanbase are living in LA and drive cars while blasting out HS.
3) Tribute or plagiarised? - someone else said that FL sounds like meet me in the hallway, but I actually think She (first 12sec) sounds like MMITHW (first 9sec)! I often throughout the album had to put it on pause to try to remember which songs it sounds like (sadly, I don't think many people know those artists because at least for me it sounded like some non uk/us music and so they wouldn't recognise the same chords). I think a looot was original that no one has every done before (and thank god for that), but then some of it was like a harried-version of existing songs. He seems to have "found" his sound unlike liam, but I'm not sure it's my sound and I'm happy for all the harries who are lucky enough to be in sync with what harry is doing now.
Overall, I think I could continue listening (apart from AY, LU, WS) to Golden, Falling and Canyon Moon, although I expected to be in love with at least 9 out of 12 songs :(

Ketch-Up: Jan - Mar 2020
Okay so I’ve been terrible at this blog thing, only posting sometimes, but I guess that’s why I have it, it’s just for me to post shit when I feel like it. So I decided to do this new Ketch-Up series for whenever I want to talk about a bunch of stuff at once. So a lot has happened at the start of 2020, musically, in the book world and with TV. So my plan is to just talk about certain things in each category and see what happens.
Movies:
Since getting Netflix for Christmas, I have been watching a lot of stuff. There are five movies I’d specifically like to talk about, which I watched from January till the beginning of March, but these are by no means even half of the amount of movies I watched, just the ones I need to write about.
6 Balloons
So I started watching this after I finished Now You See Me 2 and I just wanted more Dave Franco because I love him, so 6 Balloons popped up as being one of his recent films and I decided to watch it after being intrigued with the synopsis. Firstly, I was not expecting it to be scripted and filmed the way it was. It was super emotional and I have mixed feelings about it, although I do not regret watching it. It’s major theme is addiction, so if you're not into that, or it may trigger you, don’t watch it because that’s all it’s about. I really did like the brother and sister dynamic that it had, but the whole journey that the main character goes through to help her brother is stressful and it had this creepy stress reliever audio going on in the sister’s head which really put me off, but was powerful at the same time.
Miss Americana
This one is the documentary of Taylor Swift and I loved it. I thought it was so interesting and even watched it again with my mom because I thought that Taylor’s story was such an intriguing one. I really understand now where she was at with the Reputation album and the reason for the song choices she had. At first I was not a big Taylor Swift fan except for the occasional song, but now I gotta say that with this Lover era and Taylor being more open and using her voice for what she believes in, I may become a full blown Swifty.
P.S. I Still Love You
The sequel to To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is a rom com, based off of the YA book series, which I have read and enjoyed. The first movie was really great which I have watched more than once, so I was expecting good things from this next movie. And it definitely wasn’t bad, but I did not fully enjoy the second book, so it’s not surprising that I didn’t love this movie. I’m just a big Peter Kavinsky fan and when John Ambrose McClaren shows up, I just cringe. Also Lara Jean is more cringy in this movie because of the way she plays both John and Peter and is practically running away from her problems with Peter, and reliving baby school romance with John Ambrose. I just think the idea of liking a guy that you had a crush on when you were ten is so stupid because no one is the same person from when they were ten, and all those “moments” that you had were really nothing more than two kids hanging out! I would rather have just had the first book be a standalone I think.
Marriage Story
This movie is really sad. It won an Oscar so I thought I should look into it. I saw it on Netflix and really liked the plot so I watched it and boy was it ever sad. The whole plot is about divorce and the whole experience and journey to actually getting a divorce and how it is so easy for it to get messy even with two adults who are still friends. I thought it was a very well made movie and I loved both Scarlett Johanson and Adam Driver in it. They did so well.
Crazy Stupid Love
This was one of my more recent watches and I was pleasantly surprised with the way the story went. I really liked a lot of the elements of the story, but some parts did make me feel uncomfortable. Like the babysitter having a crush on the dad and was going to send him nudes, while his son had a major crush on her. It was just really weird, but the overall themes of family were really sweet, and the same goes for the friendship the dad had with the young guy in the bar who started to date his oldest daughter. But overall it was really good.
TV Shows:
Formula One: Drive to Survive Seasons 1 & 2
As our first real Netflix watch, my family and I got addicted to this docuseries. I thought it was interesting and amazing for the whole first season and when the second season came out, it just got better. In the second season we got to see the bigger formula one teams as well as all of the drama with the smaller teams and see the totally different worlds with the ones with money and the ones without. It was honestly an amazing ride and I can’t wait for the next season.
Sherlock Season 1
This is the other full season that I watched in these three months and I got to say that I really enjoyed it. Honestly some parts freaked me out, but overall I loved learning and seeing Sherlock and Watson grow together. The mysteries were all very intriguing and made me want more and I will definitely continue watching through the next seasons.
Books:
This list is without my most recent read, Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare, because I have a whole other post/review for that one, so if you want to hear my thoughts, check it out, either on my post list, or scrolling down to the post before this one!
Beartown by Fredrik Backman
This book was amazing! The way it was written was literally the most powerful thing I have ever experienced. This book does deal with heavy subjects, but the way it is told is so cool, showing everyone’s perspective. If you get the chance to read this, then do it because it will change you.
Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor
So this book I had heard so many good things about so I was excited to read it, but the problem was that I have been in kind of a reading slump, and starting a new fantasy series is never the smartest thing to do when that happens. But I had heard great things, so I thought that this book would get me out of that slump, but it epicly failed. It was a good book and I enjoyed the plot, but there was nothing supper exciting or special about it. I think I’ll still read the second book, but it’s not high on my priority list. It just wasn’t the best time for me to read it I guess.
China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan
This book was fun to read. I had been wanting to read it ever since I finished Crazy Rich Asians, but just hadn’t gotten the time to, but I’m glad I finally have because it’s such a nice fluffy read, filled with drama, but you don’t really have to think during the read. It’s a perfect reading slump read. Definitely recommend the series, it’s a ride in a good way.
Catharsis: Pain by Rowan Dugray
This book is actually all poetry which is very outside of my comfort zone, but a girl I knew in high school wrote this so I had to buy it and read it. I got to say that I was really impressed and I really liked a lot of the poems. Lots of them were very thought provoking and relatable, while others were just very sad and painful. But that’s the beauty of poetry, it’s pure emotion and abstract feelings put into words.
Romanov by Nadine Brandes
This one was also a slow read, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t enjoyable. It was actually very educational and I loved seeing the way that Russia was during the revolution. It was a slow burn type of book, but the characters were fun people to read about and see interact, so that made up for the lesser plot points in the book. I loved the end and thought it was a very good book overall.
Music:
These are just a few of the songs and artists that I had a lot of feelings about and which came out during these months.
Faouzia- The Road
The Road was Faouzia’s first song out in 2020, but I also want to talk about her many singles that came out in 2019 as well because wow! I love Faouzia and all of her songs are just so powerful and beautiful. I need an album from her ASAP because I get literally too excited for new singles to come out and it’s almost toture waiting. She also posts her ‘work-in-progress’ snip-its and I literally just keep relistening to them when I get a craving for Faouzia and new music. When she comes out with an album, I will definitely listen to it on repeat.
Olivia O’Brien- The Results of My Poor Judgement
So at first I wasn’t sure about these mixtape things Olivia was starting to come out with, especially with the first one that was released at the end of last year. It was called “A Sad Fucking Summer” I think, and I wasn’t like really impressed, until this next mixtape came out. This mixtape, “Results of My Poor Judgement” has three songs on it, unlike the first one that only had two, and I am in love with all three! Literally they are just so good and I can’t stop listening to them. Josslyn is a literal bitch fest that makes me so happy, while the other two just hit hard in the emotions while they are still great bops. I don’t know how she does it!
Katy Perry- Never Worn White
For this one, I saw the video first when it was released and the number one viewed video on YouTube. At first I was confused because I didn’t know Katy Perry was engaged, and I was like this is for sure a wedding song. And then I got to the end of the video… and she’s pregnant! It was her pregnancy reveal, and I thought it was the most beautiful thing ever. I am a sucker for personal songs that show the singer's personal life and obviously have a lot of meaning to them. That’s probably why I never really liked Katy Perry’s newest stuff before, because it’s never felt really real to me and more just to make a pop album. But to see Katy Perry in this video, singing this song, made me so happy, especially since she was like my idol when I was little and now she’s growing up and moving on in life and it’s just really nice to see.
Julia Michaels- Heartless
I am a big Julia Michaels fan. (Not as big as a Halsey fan, but I do love Julia!) So until Julia starts releasing her own projects again, like hopefully a Inner Monologue Part 3, I will have to settle for collabs like this one. Honestly though, I really like this song and it’s got a lot of feeling to it while still making you want to get up and dance. It’s just a really good country number and I hope Julia does more country, because she sounds good in it.
Alec Benjamin- Narrated for You and These Two Windows
So the newest favourite artist I found these three months was Alec Benjamin! I love the newer music he’s releasing right now and can’t wait for his new album to come out in April, but also I discovered his debut album, which I was really impressed with. Lately I’ve been feeling like I haven’t had any good male artists in my phone that I’m supper obsessed with, like Ed Sheeran. But I’m hoping with this new year that changes and I already see it starting to, especially when I find good ones like Alec Benjamin.
Noah Cyrus- I Got So High That I Saw Jesus
I feel like this will be a good year for Noah Cyrus. It’s high time for a debut album from her, or even another EP, but I just need something because her newest music has just been stellar. I was worried at first that her brand would be more in the rap or emo stuff, but her music has been more my kind of music, slower and softer tunes with lots of feels. This song definitely shows that side of her and I love it.
If you made it to the end, thanks for reading my thoughts! I know it was long and probably boring, but oh well.
Until next time!

RQG 65 Actual live blog*
*bc I am not emotionally up to either relistening or editing this as much  as usual. I really should have stuck to my guns about avoiding spoilers - I am too aware of impending heart aches to relax and enjoy this. Also I abuse the semi colon in this; I'd apologize but that would imply I have an intention of changing. Have you ever tried to find a location on a university campus? They really should have come up with a clear meeting point or a way to communicate. Zolf tried to use his official docs to get through quickly, that backfires Sasha slips through unseen Bertie in what possible world is your tank cosplay going to be suitable for pulling a Sasha? The sword is his best hope one way or the other. Ah I forgot he has a knack for bsing people who don't know him long enough for the glamour to wear off. I'd object but in real life coming across as old money actually does get a lot of people to do whatever you want if only to get you out without complaining to the manager. Baggage handler please be conning Bertie Not the worst plan Zolf, you could use a drink and a break I missed how Hamid got out of the airport I can't lie I love Bryn's cheesy jokes Sasha weighing whether not losing track of the team is worth the awkward of Zolf being emotional is almost  a throw away line but it is so relatable. People always expect "the girl" to be eager for someone to cry on their shoulders; but honestly no one I've met who wasn't a mother (by virtue of experience) or a therapist (literally trained in it) actually feels like they know what to do when someone is emotionally hurting. Plus when it's someone who doesn't like to show emotion it feels like you're forcing them to show you their diary just by being around when they can't hide their emotions like usual. Or spying on them since it isn't them choosing to trust you with their emotions, you are just there when they can't hide it and they know you are seeing them in a way they don't want to be seen. Ah Alex gave in and gave Sasha a ride on the crane Come on someone has to see through Bertie,  please? Oh right he actually has a rank in bull. Hamid and Zolf talking is going better than I feared. Doesn't mean this isn't painful but at least they don't seem to have bad blood except for Bertie. Oh crap all the points I made to mitigate Zolf trying to kill Bertie are being listed off as why he can't trust himself. Oh poo he makes a good case for them keeping Bertie too. Especially since I still don't know what Alex was thinking to let him within a mile of anything with a name like "the circlet of command". Hamid is about the only one with a shot at getting Bertie to actually behave. Poor Hamid,  I think the pep talks do help,  if only by letting Zolf know he cares; but Zolf doesn't really change moods quickly and usually has his mind made up before saying anything. I'd blame Hamid's "I believe in you" speech but there was no way I was going to get through this episode without crying. The actual worst part is Zolf wouldn't be so worth keeping if he wasn't a good enough person to be this concerned about the damage he might do if he stayed. Oh Sasha, for some whose charisma stat might actually be in the negative numbers you can be really eloquent at times. It wouldn't be a team worth keeping if members weren't able to leave. Zolf side quest please? Zolf as admin please? Zolf in any way shape or form. Honest to God the only reason I'm not sobbing loud enough to scare the cat is that I know he eventually comes back (after like 50 episodes) Someone shoot me if I give in and play "how can I help you to say goodbye" it's such a cliche and metaphor wise it's a daughter helping her father to say goodbye not a mother helping her child. Is that actual mercy from Alex? Lightening the mood by cutting to Bertie before the kids can break my heart further? Of course Bertie is bearing out Zolf's fears.  James has cinematographic narration with a nice sense of timing. Hamid I love your priorities: Sleep and eat. If you are going, go with some pocket money so you are OK on the road. Of course Zolf won't let them fuss over him and have a goodbye dinner. Hamid are you compensating for Zolf by over feeding Sasha? Like "I can't fix this but I can feed Sasha so I will do that as much as possible"

Northern Migration- Chapter 21 (Notes + Preview)
We’re finally out of the Suffering Game, so you know what that means! We can finally move on with our lives and stop being anxious all the time in case someone else manages to get their souls kicked out of their bodies. But hey, let’s reflect fondly on our times here in Wonderland with our final set of notes for it. Like always, be sure to give the actual chapter a read but if that doesn’t float your boat then I guess you can just sink (jk).
Spoilers Ahead!
So since the previous chapter was a break from the slough that is Wonderland, I tried to make the opening scene a refresher of what’s going on, where everybody is standing, and what condition they all are in. Hopefully, I worked or else that fight scene got real confusing real fast.
I mentioned this a long time ago, but when I started this fic, I forgot that Avi is a massive jock. Like, he has two character traits and I completely forgot one of them. In order to convey my falsehood that he’s a nerd, I made sure to emphasized at every given moment that even though he has a sword, he has no idea how to use it. Now that I know better, I’m starting to incorporate the fact that he’s a jock back into the story. In this case, by having him jump onto a mob of mannequins and just brawling it out. I’m going to make the fact that he carried around a sword he did not know how to use a sort of character beat (that I’ll hopefully actually remember to go back to), but just know that I do notice when I make mistakes like that and there are times when I will do my best to reconcile my fic with canon.
In another instance of revisionist writing, I also did not realize that Maarvey is the leader of the Hammerheads until I was relistening to the Petals to the Metal a while back. Of course, I already wrote in a new boss for the gang, so I guess they’re married now. Guys, the Hammerheads are going to be so insignificant in the long run. Please don’t think about it too hard. I’m trying.
A whole lot of you were getting super excited to see Merle rescue Barry, and I was so sure you guys all forgot that Sloane was following Johann around. I don’t blame you guys for forgetting since it was actually months ago, but now I just feel foolish for not sticking a reminder somewhere in the story.
Lydia and Edward’s fighting styles as Lucretia and Taako are, of course, twisted versions of the magic the people they’re possessing are known for. I made sure to only have Edward use spells only Taako knows, which was actually super fun to write. I chickened out a bit with Lydia since some of the different ways I thought barriers could be used were a little bit too gruesome for my taste.
Also, I really hope that fight scene wasn’t too confusing to read. There were too many things that had to be happening at once for me to choose one character’s perspective to stick with, but a lot of the sequences were way too short for me to break up with lines. I tried doing this sort of long shot effect where I started with one person and used things from the environment as an excuse to track the camera to someone else. So for example: Julia in trouble > Davenport can’t reach her due to beam > Ren can feel vibrations of the beam. If it was too confusing to read, just say so and I will never use this format again.
Where do I start with Ren and Lup? Remember two chapters ago when Not Taako first appeared and the umbra staff flew from Ren’s hand into his? That was supposed to be Lup thinking that Taako had come back to her, so when she realized seconds later that this is a fake, she zapped him. No one seemed to have caught onto that, or at least no one told me they did. So in this chapter, when Ren senses Lup being upset, this is Lup essentially thinking that Taako is gone forever.
I imagine that the umbra staff’s ability to help Ren know where everything is in a given space is the same ability that Lup uses to spread her senses beyond the umbrella. Essentially, Lup handed over her sense of sight to Ren so that she could “see.”
I never mentioned Killian having different types of crossbow bolts before because???? I don’t have a good excuse?? So sue me???
I actually had to look up spells for this fight scene so I guess I’m officially putting more work into this than I first said I ever would.
I hope with Kravitz’s arrival in this scene is a good indicator of how differently time passes on the Astral Plane. His arrival also marks the spot in the story where I should have spilt this chapter into two parts but oh well.
When you really think about it, bardic magic sounds terrifying. Anything can count as being music, so like you really got to be careful not to insult those suckers or else they’re just gonna scorn you.
I apologize if the POV got really wonky for the second half of the Hammerheads scene. Again, there was a lot of things happening at once, and the moment Barry went unconscious, I was having problems finding a good perspective to anchor the rest of the sequence on, especially since I wanted to give Merle some kind of moment in this chapter but I also had to explain Johann’s plan. It got real messy and, once again, I am so sorry for that.
Okay, so I wrote the song Johann sings. And by wrote, I mean I threw some lines with a rhyme scheme together and called it a day. It’s like not good at all, and really it’s super bold of me to claim that it’s the most beautiful thing Sloane has ever heard.
We’re going to talk a bit more about Stevie and John because I still have more to say. Stevie and John’s subplot is my favorite to write, and I am very excited that I can now start giving you guys a real idea of where it’s going. Initially, when I first started writing this story, I knew that I wanted John to play a major role before the story’s climax and I knew that I wanted Stevie to be more than just decoration for her parents. Putting these two together has led to some ideas and plot points I can’t wait to show you guys and I really hope that you’re as down to see them as I am. Everything I said in the in-chapter notes about Stevie having a good ending is true. Right now I am on the fence about how this will end for John because I can either let it end with him redeeming himself like in the original show or I can make it an excuse to reinforce his villainhood. Tell me when you guys would rather see, and I’ll do my best to make it happen.
Also, you know how John says he forgot Stevie’s name, giving her the opportunity to say it again (and essentially introduce herself for the first time without her realizing) and how Stevie never catches on that she got played? I once watched a Harry Potter movie where something like that happened and I remember thinking to myself “damn, that one smart kid for realizing they’re something fishy in someone doing that” and that’s where this was born from!
Also, I hope Stevie’s choice at the end there makes sense because I didn’t want to overstate it since it really is a culmination of her character arc so far.
Julia hitting Not Lucretia with her prosthetic leg and yelling “horseshit” is the best moment in this fic thus far.
The ending of actually collecting the bell is really rushed but the chapter was getting really long I didn’t want to have to spilt it up into two parts. I hope it does work, and whatever you think needs more time to breathe will probably get more air in the next few chapters.
I debated if I wanted to let Taako’s line be the ending note for the scene because, on one hand, I had a completely different moment in mind where Taako reunites with Magnus and realizes that he’s missed out on so much. But that lined happened and, even though I don’t have Taako say that catchphrase a whole lot (since he doesn’t actually say it a lot in canon) it felt like such an emotional peak that I knew I could not do better than that. The chapter had to end there because Taako saying his own name just felt right.
So I’m going back to school in a couple of weeks, which means that updates are going to slow down to a crawl. I’ll do my best to keep you guys posted on how things are going writing wise, but please feel free to drop in and strike up a conversation about anything. I am a lonely person and I always like hearing from you guys. In the meantime, please enjoy this preview for the next chapter:
It’s been a long time since he’s had to mess with the gurney. It’s made from a light wood, carved from Magnus’s deft hands. Taako puzzles over it for a moment, trying to figure out how the intricate straps are supposed to work when the mystery woman interrupts his thoughts. “Just help me sit right there,” she says, pointing to one end. Both her teeth and red bandana are bright against her dark skin, and his eyes hurt to even look at her.  “Just sit opposite. I’m pretty sure it’ll balance itself out.”
“Yeah. Fine. Sure.” He’s not heartless, so he grabs her arm and drags her close enough to the gurney that she can pull herself on. It’s hard work, and the sweat that drips down his back is as unpleasant as he remembers it being. She shifts, makes sure she has her sword and shield strapped to her back. When he takes his designated spot, she tells her stone to lift them up. The ground disappears under his feet. From this high up, he can see all that remains of Wonderland—nothing but a pile of junk and rock. He spits down at it.
A second later, he hears Kravitz’s distant but still clearly disgusted shout. Taako cackles.
[...]
When the gurney reaches the deck, the murky feeling from before comes back in full force. He jumps over the rail, feet landing on the familiar wood. It’s the same silver railing, same layout from stern to helm. After all this time, nothing’s changed. Sure, Lucretia is laying on the ground with Davenport still worrying over her, but that doesn’t count. Everything else—the scratches on the wood where battles had been fought, the carving of their names by the helm for future prosperity—is still here in mint condition. Nostalgia sweetens his lips, punctuating every step of movement as he spins and takes in the sight of home. This is home.
And there’s Magnus. He’s standing by the buttons that operate the gurney lift, eyes wide as he stares at Taako. He’s older—thicker in some parts, worn out in others like a bruised shield. But his smile is the same as he takes three large steps from the buttons and engulfs Taako in a hug. “Holy shit—Taako!”
Taako wheezes, every rib cracking. Magnus’s arms are thick and strong, and Taako can’t deny how great the feeling of being affectionately suffocated is. “Ey, big guy—”
“I thought I was never gonna—”
“Momma!” At the sound of a girl’s voice, Magnus drops Taako. Hug over. His hands stay resting on Taako as the little human girl who is peaking out from the steps below deck, hiding for a moment longer before racing up to the gurney.
Taako feels Magnus’s hands leave him. “Jules,” he says, his hand now brushing over the little girl’s head as he approaches Julia. His mouth agape, he tries to find a place to start. His hands hover over Julia under she takes one of his and presses it to her cheek. His other hand copies it, and Taako can see the gold glint of a ring on his left finger. “Jules, what happened? This is… what happened?”
Taako stares at the ring, then at the loving sadness in Julia’s eyes. He looks down at the child, and a part of himself he really hates can piece the narrative into a whole picture. “What the fuck?”
