i put this in a longer post but i feel like saying it again; the first time i watched farleigh and oliver’s sex scene, i couldn’t quite place why it made me sad (besides it being dubiously consensual and ambiguously moral). but it wasn’t until i started rewatching, and rewatching… and rewatching saltburn that i realized what it was.

the lighting. the softness of moonlight and the stark contrast of shadow. it’s only farleigh, in this scene, that is illuminated. not entirely, not completely; the details of his face are obscured by the night. it brings him to life, though. the arch of his nose, his lips, the curls on the side of his face, and his eyes. in agonizing contrast to oliver’s silhouette, the moonlight shines the brightest in farleigh’s eyes.

it’s the feeling of life, soul, emotion. that sparkle that can either mean infatuation or misery; farleigh looks caught between the two. he looks young, below the darkness that swallows oliver whole. i kind of hate it.
