let’s tackle this real quick. if you follow me you know most of my fics are based on COMIC gwen unless specifically said otherwise to the plot or the description, meaning she ages from 17-21 in my writings which is appropriate. that’s why most characters are randy, avril, harry, etc because i go off the comics that have more information and world building. and if we wanna keep going off your lopsided logic let’s bring up the actual scream movie since you’re bringing up ghostface gwen… baby billy was 17. stu was 18. do you know that this is because they were in their senior year and were legally becoming adults?? so it’s not crazy or unsafe considering they are gonna be damn near adults?? you tried, next!

This isn’t exactly RP stuff, but do you know any specific resources for writing fan-servant skills in “proper” notation? To give an example of what i mean:

Fgo wiki says Charisma is: “Increases party's attack for 3 turns.”

Gamepress says it’s: “Increase ATK for all allies (3 turns).”

But the actual official NA localization in game is: “Increase all allies’ ATK (3 turns)”

I try to make my fan servants look as close to genuine as possible and the biggest issue I have is how hard it is to find the proper notation for an original skill. It’s at the point where unless one exists i’ve just missed (entirely possible. Im generally an idiot.) I’m heavily considering systematically going over in game servant profiles and archiving a database of notation formulas myself. I can use Rayshift.io to search for and view profiles of servants i don’t have (but obviously I’m gonna have to wait for unique and JP only skill effects like Cu-ster’s LB6 buff)

I think it might be more a matter of translation. The original Japanese text for Charisma in FGO is:

味方全体の攻撃力をアップ(3ターン)

According to google translator, the closest would be something like “Increases the attack power of all allies (3 turns) ”. Every single one of that versions is how whoever is translating that part felt would be more appropriated. Some of the FGO wiki is directly translated by the fans, either via reddit or some other source. Moreover, I also believe that sometimes the FGO NA team also makes slight corrections and adjustments in the translations.

My advice is that you analyze the meta of your OC Servant and don’t think too much about details. Again, let’s go with Charisma. According to Fate/complete material III:

Charisma (カリスマ) is a composite Skill consisting of a person's charm as well as the natural talent to command or unify an army or country. Increases the ability of allies during group battles. A rare talent, and an ability inherent to Servants of the Saver class.

Basically, this is a skill reserved for leaders, usually for kings but some like Sakamoto Ryouma has the ability to inspire and lead groups. Is your Servant a leader or very good at inspiring people? Then perhaps they have Charisma, something that even in the real world is associated with leaders.

To make things even more confusing, each can have a slightly different flavor text added to it. Let’s pick Gilgamesh for example. He has Charisma A+, but the description for it both as an adult and for his child counterpart differs.

Often praised as the greatest king, Gilgamesh’s ability to command and lead great armies is excellent. An egotistical Gilgamesh radiating with self-confidence will surely boost the morale of his army to an extremely high level.

Archer Gilgamesh (Fate/complete material III)

Often praised as the greatest king, Gilgamesh already has an extremely high Charisma from a young age, as if it was a spell (curse).

Kid Gil (Fate/Grand Order material III — Profile of Gilgamesh (Child), translated by Kinalvin at Reddit.)

Write down the things your OC is known for. Things that made them outstanding and try to translate it into the skills. Are they nimble? Then perhaps they have one of the Mind’s Eye (true or false), and so on. Once you get that, pick the “flavor” of translation you like the most and, if you feel inclined to write even more, consider writing a more personalized version. Some people might have their own opinions about which translation is the best or more appropriate, but that isn’t a consensus and rather borderline personal taste. I personally would be inclined to go with the official NA translation, as it is the most accessible to the majority of players.

New Year’s Eve, a time for resolutions. My life was a mess, but I could clean my room.

It was somewhere around hour two when my dad came in.

“Hey, let’s go for a drive.” He asked me.

Dad took me to the diner down the road. The diner was stuck in the past, but in that way that made people gravitate to it in search of simpler, happier times.

“Oh, here’s a song your mom loved,” my dad said as we sat down at a booth in the corner. “You know she’d go over to that jukebox and play this song. And then when it was over, she’d play it again. And again. And she wouldn’t just sit here and listen to the song with me, she’d get up and dance in the aisles. All while people were eating.” He pulled out his wallet, revealing a picture of my mom. “I used to think it was so embarrassing, but now I look back and think of how stupid I was. I should have been dancing with her.”

I looked down at the picture he’d handed me, seeing my mom look so happy, dancing her heart out. I smiled, “That sounds fun.”

“There are so many things I should have told you and your sisters about her, but I haven’t.”

“That’s okay, dad.” I whispered to him, knowing how hard it can be to willingly remember her.

“No, it’s not.” He sighed, “I’ve relied on you and Ari too much. I know that, especially when it comes to Sof. You’re seventeen. You don’t have to be an adult yet. You shouldn’t be an adult yet. That’s why I was so happy when I saw you and Shawn.”

“I don’t want to talk about Shawn, please.” I said shaking my head.

“Really?” I said completely unimpressed.

“Dad,” I mumbled, feeling tears well up in my eyes, “I really miss her.”

It was first day back at school since winter break, and the hot tub escapade.

“I didn’t hear anything about it,” Lucas said to me as we walked towards my longer.

“No, the debate team scandal definitely knocked it out of the top spot,” Chris laughed.

“Well that’s good news?” I asked hopefully. “Officially back to being invisible.”

Lucas, looking forward, was the first to see the crowd. The crowd that was gathered suspiciously close to my locker. Pushing through the group of people, towards my locker, I finally saw what everyone was whispering about. A picture of me and Shawn kissing was taped to the locker, with black writing underneath saying, “It’s always the one’s you least expect.” It reeked of Gen’s doing, but let’s be honest, that meant nothing now. The damage had already been done, when the video was leaked.

Chris ripped the picture down, just as I pushed my way back out of the crowd, rushing down the hall, hearing Chris call after me.

“Woah, hey, what’s going on?” I hear Shawn from in front of me.

I look up, sure that my expression is tumultuous, confusion and anger all coming together in one odd, unknowable emotion. “You’re just going to let everyone believe that we had sex in the hot tub?” I screamed at him. “When you know that nothing happened? I’m sure you’re glad that video leaked.” I stalked away from him, not wanting to ever see Shawn Mendes again.

“Are you going to do something about this?” I hear Chris behind me, being the best friend that she always has been.

“Listen up, everyone!” I hear Shawn yell at the top of his lungs, getting everyone’s attention. I turn, stopping to listen to what he might have to say about this. “Not that it’s anyone’s business, but nothing happened in the hot tub. So if I hear any of you talking about Y/N or that video, I’ll personally be kicking all of your asses. You understand?” He turned towards me.

“Listen, I’m so sorry about everything, okay.” Shawn said, running in front of me to stop me from walking away. “Look, if I knew who did this I would--”

“Well, I know who did it.” I said. “So should you.”

“Okay, okay.” Shawn whispered, “Let me just talk to her, okay?”

“No,” I responded. “This is my fight. She’s not doing this because of you Shawn. It’s because she hates me. I have to handle this myself.”

Going up to Gen would normally terrify me. I used to be so scared of standing up to Gen, despite the horrible way she treated me and everyone else around her. But there was something that had happened to me over the last three months. Maybe it had something to do with opening up to the world, like my dad had mentioned. But I wasn’t scared of Gen anymore. I was finally realizing that Gen was just as sad and pathetic as I’d been when I was scared of her. She was insecure, just like every other high school girl, no matter how much she tried to convince other people she wasn’t.

“I know you posted that video,” I said as I marched up to her in the bathroom.

“Um, nope that wasn’t me,” She said.

I scoffed, “Please Gen. It’s bad enough that a guy would do this, but that a girl is doing? That’s fucking despicable. Girls shouldn’t be tearing down other girls!”

Gen walked away to dry her hands, “Well, like I said. I didn’t post it. But you know,” She turned to look at me. “I’m glad someone did. Because now everyone will know who you really are.”

“What are you talking about?” I asked.

“Shawn, he’s not as confident as he pretends to be. I am not as tough as I pretend to be. But you, Y/N Y/L/N, you are not as innocent as you pretend to be. Because you kissed the boy that I liked!”

“You guys are broken up!” I shouted at her.

“No, not now. Before, before we ever even dated, you kissed him.”

“That was seventh grade! You’ve got to be kidding me!?”

“You know that I liked him, and you kissed him anyway!”

“It was spin the bottle you fucking psycho! And it was tongueless”

“Okay, well it wasn’t tongueless to me!” Gen shouted back before turning around and storming out of the bathroom, leaving me alone.

I always thought no one was paying attention to what I was doing, that the only drama in my life was in my head, but it turns out, I wasn’t as invisible as I thought.

“I feel like I owe you an explanation,” I told Josh from my spot on the sofa.

Josh just smiled at me.

“See, all of these letters I wrote, they were based off this feeling. Just like a fun little spark, that I wanted to explore in my mind. But my letter to you, it was based off actually knowing you. You were the first boy that I ever really liked. And I didn’t really realize how I felt about you until after you and Ari had started. But over time,” I shrugged, “That feeling just faded away, and I missed my best friend. The best friend I had before you and Ari. And it wasn’t love, I was just jealous of the time she got with you because it felt like she had stolen something from me.”

“Why didn’t you just tell me that earlier?” Josh asked quietly.

“Well, I just...I didn’t really realize until Shawn.”

Josh sighed. “Right, Shawn.”

“It was real in a different way, and I’m really sorry.”

Josh looked over at me with these sad eyes, “There’s no reason to be sorry. I know where you’re coming from.”

“Did you stop loving Ari, after she broke up with you?” I wondered.

“Well, not right away. At some point it changed though,” Josh scratched at his arm, “But the longer she was away, the more I realized why she did what she did. Do you feel the same way about Shawn?”

“I know you don’t like him…” I said, not sure if Josh actually wanted to talk about this or just wanted to be polite.

“Well, I liked the way he stood up for you today,” Josh admitted. “He should have done it sooner, but I’m still glad he did it.” Josh looked at me, “Look, if you miss him. Just tell him.”

“No, I can’t,” I stuttered.

“Why not?”

I choked, not wanting to admit the reasons. But under Josh’s gaze, I didn’t have much of a choice. “Well, if it wasn’t real, then I didn’t lose anything. But if I admit that it was real, and he still doesn’t want me, then…”

“Then at least you’ll know,” Josh said kindly. “Look, Y/N you can’t sit up in your room your whole life, writing love letters that you’ll never send out. You have to tell people how you feel, when you feel it. Shawn wouldn’t even be in your life if the letter hadn’t gotten out in the first place.”

“You’re right.”

“You can’t exist in fantasy forever,” Josh whispered.

“I’m just tired of writing love letters, Josh. It would be nice to be receiving them instead.”

“Y/N,” I heard Sof say, slowly walking up to me. She was holding the blue box I had once hidden my love letters in. “I have something I think you should see. Please don’t kill me,” Sof laughed lightly, “But you were always throwing these away, and...I thought you’d want to see them one day.”

I opened the box, looking up at Sof carefully, not sure what to expect. But in the box, I saw bits of paper that I recognized instantly as Shawn’s lyrics for me. I’d never read them because I knew they hadn’t been for me. Or well, I thought they hadn’t been for me. They were just for show after all, to make Gen jealous.

Each note was addressed to me, with a heart after my name in Shawn’s scribbly handwriting. I began to read them aloud.

I get a little bit nervous around you. Get a little bit stressed out, when I think about you.

Baby, anytime you’re ready. I’m waiting.

What if my daddy’s write when he says that you’re the one?

Every single night my arms are not around you, my mind’s still wrapped around you.

After Josh had left, I began to strategize with Sofia to determine the plan of action. How were we going to get Shawn back. We’d spent some time trying to write a song, thinking it would be a cute way to reconcile, to sing a song to a songwriter. Sofia had even retrieve an old out of tune guitar from their dads room. But it turns out, that while Shawn may be stellar at song writing, Sofia and I were certainly not.

“Maybe, let’s just go back to the start,” Sofia suggested. “Write him a letter?”

I shrugged, “Maybe, but don’t you think that’s a little impersonal?”

The doorbell rang before Sofia could respond. Leaving the mess of notes and Sofia on the floor, I stood to answer the door.

Shawn stood, with his hands behind his back.

“Okay, before you slam the door in my face or tell me to go home, please just let me explain everything.”

I smiled at Shawn, who looked a little shocked when I invited him inside rather than kicking him to the curb.

“Okay, first off,” Shawn brought his hands in front of him revealing a drink and flowers. “A horchata, and flowers, because I want you to know I’m being completely serious right now.”

I smiled up at him, thanking him for the items.

“What’s all of this?” Shawn asked as he came to see the mess Sofia sat amongst.

“Oh, nothing,” I rushed at the same time that Sofia said, “Y/N is just trying to figure out how to win back your affections.”

I shot a glare at Sofia, “Go away.” I gritted, turning to see Shawn smiling shyly at me.

“It’s okay,” Shawn murmured, “I’ve been doing the same thing.”

I sat on the couch, allowing Shawn to follow suit. “Listen, Y/N, the only reason I went to see Gen that night was because I went to tell her that we were over. Like completely done because I only wanted to be with you.”

“Really?” I asked suspiciously.

“Really,” Shawn smiled. “Y/N, I am so in love with you there could never be anyone else.” Shawn said sincerely.

“You’re what?” I squeaked.

“I’m in love with you.”

“I wanted to tell you that I liked you, in a not fake way,” I said quietly, looking at Shawn’s feet. “I’m in love with you too,” I looked up at him. “But I’m so scared.”

Shawn shuffled towards me on the couch, his hand coming to rest on my neck. “I”m scared too.” He shrugged. “But we’ll make it.” Shawn leaned in to brush his lips lightly against mine before he seemingly got distracted.

“Who plays the guitar?” He asked pointing to the guitar on the floor.

I laughed, “Um no one.” I ran a hand through my hair, as Shawn eyed me quizzically. “Sofia and I might have been trying to write a song for me to sing to you.”

Shawn laughed, “Really?”

I nodded shyly.

“That’s the cutest thing I’ve ever heard, but…” Shawn reached for the guitar, cringing at the out of tune sounds it was making. “Maybe I can be the one to sing a song to you.”

I smiled at him, as he mindlessly tuned the guitar for a couple of minutes before a soft, beautiful hum came from the guitar.

Shawn began plucking out a smooth melody, “Don’t cry or do, whatever makes you comfortable. I’m tired too, there’s nothing left to say, let’s call a truce.” Shawn crooned the words to me, his expression telling me everything I needed to know about how he felt.

“I’m so sorry,” Shawn sang, “That we’re still stuck in the middle.” Instantly, I recognized the song as lyrics from a not Shawn had previously given to me. Hearing the words in song, was somehow so much better.

“Can I kiss you or not,” Shawn smiled, laughing a little, “Cus I’m not really sure right now of what you want. Are you still mad at me? I’m hoping not.” I smiled at him, leaning closer to him, wanting to breathe in every part of this experience that I could. That’s what my dad had said right? Don’t close myself off to moments like this.

“Tell me what’s inside your head, no matter what you say, I won’t love you less. And I’d be lying if I said I do.”

Shawn ended the song and placed the guitar at his side, “So,” he smiled. “Are you still mad at me?”

I shook my head, laughing, “God no.” I crawled into his lap kissing him quickly. “You’re the best thing to ever happen to me. I couldn’t possibly stay mad, even if you deserved it.”

“I need to thank Sofia for sending me that letter,” Shawn smiled as he leaned in to kiss me again.

I've come out to a handful of irl people as trans this week. I still have a smorgasbord of feelings on the matter, though. As such it has been on my mind a lot. As much as I'd like to be a Real Guy, I can't totally divorce myself from my biology with a clear conscience. I don't want to go under the knife unless medically necessary.

In my younger years, I had bad bouts of dysphoria. I was often mad or at least disappointed that I couldn't be a guy. Of course a lot of it I believe was fueled by what I was constantly told people should be like according to their equipment. I remember as a kid, wanting to ID as a guy and my family was very adamant about me not doing that. My aunt would get upset and say "I don't let boys spend the night with me".

Even when I was in kindergarten, I asked an older first grade boy to teach me how to be a boy. (I vaguely even remember him trying to teach me a "boy's" version of hopscotch.) Our Sunday school classes at church were even separated by gender for a time and I was thrilled when a chance came up for us combine.

My desire to "belong" with males has been an ongoing theme in my life, even if it's been subtle. I've always been drawn to guys moreso than females (and the few I was strongly drawn to usually turned out to be queer, too). This was really awkward when all the boys seemed to be in that "ew girls have cooties" stage. That on top of being neurodivergent, I ended up being the class weirdo more often than not. (On a side note, in a couple psychological evaluations and they outright told me that I seem to think more like a male or something to that effect. I forgot the exact details and context but that definitely stood out to me.)

This kinda thing carried on into my teen years on and off. Then there was the onset of puberty... and PCOS. I started losing my hair when I was 16. They diagnosed me with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. This was causing my hormones to go all wacky. My body was producing a lot testosterone. I also had other issues that came with this. Gained a lot of weight (which I was frequently tormented for at home. My eating habits were scrutinized further making me miserable.) My cycles were irregular. My voice was also changing.

That made things a little awkward when I joined choir in high school cus I love singing. And yes, I took full advantage of my deepening voice to sing in the tenor section with the guys. It was a validating experience. The director still really wanted me to work on my "girl" voice but it felt so awkward and forced. She backed off when I printed out an article about my disorder and highlighted the parts about voice change and irregular hormones.

In all this time, I never gave serious thought to being a guy. Oh, I thought about it, but I didn't feel like I would ever be in a position to actually do anything about it. It wouldn't have been received well at all at home. My entire family (save for a few people) is quite vocal about their homophobia. I was there for a while too, though.

But one thing that I realized more as I got older that sorta helped me cope, is that no matter what kinda equipment I have, I can still be myself. Ones identity shouldn't be so deeply rooted in gender. This especially held true when I gradually gained more sense of control over my identity as an adult. I get "Chris" on my name tags. I haven't worn a dress since 2011. I finally mustered the courage to get my hair cut short in 2018. I also realized that a big part of what exasperated my dysphoria was also me internalizing people's shitty ideas about gender.

I've come to terms with the fact I'll never quite be the guy I'd like to have been. I have a functioning body and as I mentioned before, I don't want to undergo any surgeries unless medically necessary.

I have learned more about gender and I feel that non-binary and transmasculine are good descriptors for me. (As such, I also id as gay or mlm). In a way, I wish I could simply tick "male" but like I mentioned before, I can't completely separate myself from my biology. I can't speak for anyone else but for me, that is a big factor. My body is still very female presenting. I'm very short and I have large hips/thighs that give me away. (Wish I could wear men's pants comfortably but alas...). I fully intend on getting a binder too. I wish I had been built more like a truck than a clown car.

But at the end of the day, I'm me and gender is (and really should be considered) just one of many attributes one possesses. That's why I don't want to be picky about pronouns. Sure, it feels kinda nice to be called something other than "she" but at the same time, I don't think it should really be a huge deal to me.

This was fucking reckless. Beyond normal levels for sure but hey. It wasn’t going to stop me. I couldn’t care less if they found out. It’s not like they could stop me. They haven’t hiked this spot as much as I have. I felt my phone go off in my pocket and as soon as I could safely, I pulled it out and tossed it into the trunk. I didn’t want to deal with anyone. I just charged straight into them and got into a fight. I had just finished when I saw him. Panting but looking pretty decent still was ardyn. He stopped to breathe and looked up.

I couldn’t hear ardyn so I was assuming he was back towards the bottom now. I took the reapertails on easily. A few well placed blows usually sent them to meet their maker. The demons inside the dead end were going to be the issues.

“Why is it always Wyverns….?” Five were flying above as spiracorns were fighting with three Reapertails. I sighed then and took a second to breathe before walking into that.

It was a mess. The spiracorns was a major pain but added onto the Wyverns, I didn’t really have much of a chance alone. I was still trying though, swinging when it came charging at me cutting off it’s horn making it go up on two feet screaming. I took my chance and pulled a gun and shot it under the chin. The Spiracorn finally died but that left me with the flying bastards. At least until one fell with a crossbow bolt in its eye. I looked back from where it fell and was shocked.

“What the fuck!?” Ardyn just smiled and aimed again taking out the last four. They fell around me then and I growled. He sent away his weapon and started walking over.

He stumbled back and I dropped my weapon and went for a kick. He somehow dodged it but not the fist to his gut. He doubled over and I got his hair tightly.

I’ll make sure you don’t make it back down.” I ran and jumped then getting a hand hold high above my head and pulled myself up the rock wall climbing. I could feel tears threatening to fall but I wasn’t going to let them. I couldn’t let anyone see me that fucking weak.

I finally got up the walls and found the haven. I just ditched my pack there and kept going. I avoided the killer wasps barely and found the nest. I slid down into it and stayed there in the shadows for a second. This is why I wanted to really come up here. I could be perfectly alone and if I did throw my sword or kicked something, no one else but me would be hurt. That was the main part. I was going to be the only one hurt if things kept going south.

I could see the haven she was camping at. She was trying to set up the tent now but I could hear her talking to herself. I walked forward and she looked up. A first there was shock but it quickly changed to anger. She threw down the poles then and stood up.

“What the hell did I tell you? Why didn’t you leave you dumbass!?” I shrugged then smiling.

Finally though, I had her pinned against me tightly with her feet off the ground. She was only a few inches shorter so it wasn’t hard. She was still squirming but it wasn’t as strong as before. Finally I heard it. She was sobbing. I sighed then and eased up.

“You stupid stupid man…. Just let me go… please!!” Her voice was strained but you could hear it. She was breaking inside.

“Too damn much….  Just….Too much.” I felt her touch my arm shaking then. She was gripping it lightly like she was scared of hurting me.

The rest of the night was relaxed. We got the tent up and got the sleeping bags in there as well. Dinner was nothing fancy but it was worth it. I got her to start talking to me about everything bugging her. She had baggage for sure but it went well with mine. I think she slowly started realizing that as well because she didn’t lock up ever. Finally when she was all talked out, we brought the sleeping bags outside and laid out watching the stars above us. It was an amazing spot for stargazing honestly. I knew more than she did and was telling her what stories I could remember when I felt it. She had moved closer to hang onto my shirt a bit. I looked over and her eyes were closing.

“Someone tired?” She nodded, not even arguing. I chuckled and got my arm around her and held her tightly.

“It’s safer inside the tent Skylar.”

“Hm… Didn’t know that. Smart boy.” She patted my chest then giggling. I sighed then and sat up holding her. She wasn’t even trying to move.

“Fiiinnneeee….” It took everything not to chuckle. She was such a child right now honestly. We got everything back in and she quickly got comfy after zipping the tent closed. The fire would burn itself out through the night but it was a warm night. She was still in my coat as well. She had refused to give it back. I didn’t mind. As long as it kept the smile on her face. I never wanted to see her cry like that again.

i think one thing that makes a lot of my favorite characters my favorites is that theyre not just quirky “meme” morally upright completely “perfect” people. theyve got sides to them that isnt always the best thing to do, and often is kinda morally hecked up, but they have reasons, whether directly stated or implied, for this.

for instance (a big one) cu, he can be ruthless and kill without hesitation no matter who it is, and thats why i like him. he’s not just a “oh funny big pupper lol!” character, hes not just “muscles and a heart of gold uwu” he’s dangerous and unpredictable, like a storm. he has his own morals, but they’re not guaranteed to be ones considered “good” by the popular morality.

a lot of my faves i like bc they also have an aspect to them of doing bad things due to physically not knowing how to do anything otherwise (mozart, kyle, bel, nizou, ect). like three out of the listed ones are basically lab experiments who have no moral code save for what their “creator” taught them. mozart had no real dependable adults, and only his vague memories of his past life, and as expected, he can act like an immature child- getting upset when not constantly given attention, insensitive to others’ feelings- and this extends to all of the loids tbh, not just my boy (which is something a lot of the fandom doesnt get haha). with the other three its also more implied, esp kyle and nizou who arent really given backstories. but kyle and bel, like the loids, are artificially created humans- bel basically a being of anarchy and cunning, so given that he only knows how to be an ass. his personality is the manifestation of “if i light this on fire will it burn”, because its all hes known. kyle as well, i think he only knows how to be a manipulative bastard- his goal has always been to get information/get the feathers, and hes followed that through- why should he care abt anyone else along the way? nizou is the only one out of these four who is like. a regular human, not a lab experiment or anything like that, but i kinda have way big feels for him so. i think its clear in his dialogue that hes only really felt satisfied for a long time (maybe as long as he remembers) with the feeling of destruction and killing, and thats what he believes in the most- the ability to wield his sword and take lives. he’s not known anything besides that for a long time, and its become his reason to live.

i guess in regards to this i do like to put myself (or my insert in the case of kisumi) in a situation of kind of showing them a different path(s) and alternatives to this lifestyle. with mozart this is most clear, as he is a good person (and was) and occasionally really showcases his best qualities- empathy, optimism, ect. he values the lives of others immensely, even if he doesnt understand them all the time or even was on bad terms with them. for me this more than outweighs his brattiness- in fact that negative trait makes me like him more than if he was just pure and good and perfect all the time, it makes the moments like him saving schuu or understanding wa kuns feelings all the more meaningful and important.

the others, in the roles of “villains” dont really get their positive traits shown, but i still think they have them. its not necessarily all positive but theres things i really like abt kyle- his strategy and his self sacrificing nature. the first, i say isnt all good since its this strategy that is cruel to others for the sake of achieving his goals, but just kinda the will and spirit to follow through those goals is something to admire. and gosh dang is he cute when hes smirking smugly. the second, ofc i dont like fully (its why he dies dangit) but i also respect it, it goes with his “achieving goals at any costs” and i think its one trait i really like overall in characters, especially when i feel like it adds to them being more morally grey- others being gareth and hrid for example.

nizou i could go on about for days, but ill try to keep it short. i think its his dedication that i... enjoy? the most. like w kyle, its not an all positive trait- its this stubborn dedication that keeps him locked in this destructive (and self destructive) mindset that eventually leads to his defeat. but its also... like damn. this guy is such a master of the sword- hes an undoubtable expert, and all without the ability to see. and it seems like its something hes lived with his whole life. and like, for sword things, its a pretty dang important sense, so just the fact hes had to adjust so drastically and become so skilled at it? and like, it shows in his personality. even when hes shown suffering physically from the demon sword, he still has those perfect reflexes, he still goes out there to have a final showdown w gin chan- he keeps powering through. its something i try to do myself (on a different scale and way ofc) and something i can really admire.

beli is. hm. i think part of it is just the way the rest of the story’s cast try to convince the player he’s the “worst ever”, like haha. u sure bout that. he’s def an amusing character- humor is, in some ways, an aspect i really enjoy abt characters. i tend to gravitate more towards... like “bad” humor rather than the “witty flirty character that everyone loves~” type, and as far as that goes i would tend to prefer mozart’s childish crude toilet humor to belials constant innuendos. but they have their charm too. hes also very. attractive. in a kind of “pretty boy” way but also just a little bit dangerous? and just enough that to not be like the “conventional” pretty boy almost.

And I was determined to find out how and where the fuck these people come from. The three of us (Adriana, my roommate and I) were out on campus one day. The roomie had to go back to our place to get some work done, leaving Adriana and I alone to go about our day. This was our first time hanging out one on one, therefore our first chance to have any kind depth conversation. She had to go to the post office to pick some stuff up and offered me to come along. On our walk there our conversation was very forced. Neither of us new each other very well so I scrambled to find some common ground to talk about. A movie, a TV show, Drawing, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, WHATEVER!!! I can’t remember how it started, but the topic of depression came into play. I almost shit a brick when I found out this happy go luck girl struggled practically every single thing that I did, and more. Depression, Anxiety, Suicide, self harm, and more. She had a tough life, and spent a lot of time in forester care. She felt abandoned, worthless, and had a multitude of insecurities. That led me to my next question. How the hell did this girl go throughout her day with all of this weighing down on her shoulders? She couldn’t give me the secret ingredient that I was looking for. The honest truth is everyone has their was of coping, and that was hers.  Happy, bubbly, friendly the sun will come out tomorrow, Adriana was a mess, and I wouldn’t have bet bottom dollar in a million fucking years.  It just goes to show you. I’m not saying that everyone is like this. Some people wear a smile on their face and in their hearts. It just goes to show you, depression has no face.  So the next time you see that kid who looks like they have it made. Keep in mind that you never know what’s going on behind the scenes.

I feel so sad I don’t know how to bare this emotion I want to drink, but I don’t want to feel sick I’m tired of running from this One of my greatest desires in life is to be accepted and desired, maybe not just that but to be recognized. But I wasn’t always like this. You know that old saying, Your life can change in an instant. It’s so fucking corny, but it’s true in a way. We’ve heard it in the movies countless times. Not to mansion real life. It’s always there whether it’s acknowledged or not. I never hear it used in a positive light though. “you’re life changes in an instant” is most commonly used to show some form of loss or unfortunate occurrence that has changed your life for the worst. Not to say your life can’t change in positive ways instantly, but we tend to take those little moments for granted.  We all like good things to happen to us.  Sometimes we don’t even realize how easy it comes. My first “life changing event” that I can remember, was nothing bold, nothing out theer, nothing anyone can detect. No one but me I guess.  It was a subtle shift, something I think wouldn’t change my life in the long run. But here I am 20 years later still thinking about it. The other day I was cleaning out my room and I found a shit ton of old junk that I had when I was in pre school. They were papers and reports basically talking about my development and how I interacted with other kids.  I was surprised to see the words “leader” “”social” “”outgoing” “energetic” and friendly in my reports. Since most of my childhood I made an effort to stay a loner.  I knew I had not always been a loner, but it was refreshing anf somewhat fascinating to see it written down on paper by an observer. That brings me to discuss my first life changing event, which is, of coarse, when I decided to stop being all those things.  I must have been 3 or 4 at the time. My best friend was this girl that lived down the street named Molly. And I literally was best friends with her ever since the day I was both. She was 3 months older than I was and since her family lived not too far away and my parents were already well acquainted with them she was constantly over at my house.  Every time my parents set up a playdate I would be like YES YES YES.  I loved hanging out with her. Having her around was one of my favorite things ever. One day the phone was ringing and it was Molly’s mom. “Hey Jordan” my mother said cheerfully, “Would you like Molly to come over for a play date.” My immediate answer was yes of coarse because I always LOVED seeing Molly. But then something happened. I had these sudden flood of unfamiliar emotions. “Wait,  I can’t have molly over, what if I get bored and want alone time.” “What if I just don’t want to see her right now.” “Will I regret this decision in the future?” It was as if a switch flipped in my brain. I went from being fully exited and happy, to immediately regretful and unsure of myself.  After this weird flood of emotions I immediately said to my mom. “Never mind, I don’t feel like seeing anyone right now.” And from that moment forward I kept a cautious distance.  Whenever I was asked to see her again, I would say things like, “ok, but only for an hour” or “maybe later, I don’t feel like it right now.” I don’t know exactly why but I just felt like I needed to be alone. As if alone time was “better” in some way.  That one switch in my mind mapped out a majority of my childhood and adolescent social life.  And to this day I wonder, if I ignored those emotions that day Molly’s mom was on the phone and just said yes as I always do, How different would my life be today? In the grand scheme of things I really didn’t mind being alone all the time.  But I could definitely tell my parents were concerned.  I was brought to all these doctors as a kid and they’d always ask my about my social life and how things are going. I’d just always be like “things are good”

“How are friends at school?” “Things are good.” “Do you enjoy interacting with the other kids?” “Yeah. I guess.” “Do you ever invite them over to your house?” “Sometimes.” “Why don’t you invite them over more?”

Like… I understand the concept of therapy. But when I don’t understand is how a parent will legit just bring there little kid to some random office, have them sit down in a room alone, with a woman they don’t know AT ALL. And expect them to actually say to that random stranger, in that random building, siting in that random office how they actually feel.  Like, the whole Idea of giving those doctors even a shred of personal information, was beyond me. I know some people who go to therapy today AS ADULTS who feel uncomfortably sharing shit with there therapist. So the idea of an elementary schooler doing it is beyond me. It wasn’t until years later when I was 17 that I actually chose to go to therapy again because I was ready to open up.

2017 Jaguar F-Pace Long-Term Verdict

We fell in love with the sporty style and sharp handling of Jaguar’s F-Pace at our 2017 SUV of the Year competition, but a starchy ride and polarizing interior torpedoed it from the top spot. Still, we had to know what a yearlong jag with this all-new Jag would be like. Could we deal with the stiff suspenders? And what of the whispers of questionable reliability? Thirteen months of “loanership” later, we have plenty of miles and, oddly, some feelz (as the kids say).

As I live only 3 miles from work and travel regularly, I cannot take credit for all 22,431 miles we racked up. It took an army of commuting colleagues and long-distance haulers to spin the odometer, from social media editor Carol Ngo, to photographers Jade Nelson and Robin Trajano, to online pros Colin Woodard and Erika Pizano.

Everyone raved at the F-Pace’s curb appeal. “Beautiful design and everyday usability,” Instagrammer-in-chief Ngo noted.

I too liked how it looked from the beginning all the way to the day we handed the keys back. This is pretty rare, as I normally go blind to my long-termer after a two- to three-month honeymoon. But even to my jaundiced eyes, the F-Pace looks as fresh as ever. Taut, muscular, well-proportioned, and perfectly sized for my ’hood and lifestyle.

As Carol notes, the flexibility of this two-row, midsize SUV is compelling. Surfing is my regular thing, and fitting 6-foot boards in bags with either the 60- or the 40-side seat folded down was never an issue. The optional heavy-duty rubber mats in the cargo area and footwells were also a godsend for containing sand and moisture.

Our F-Pace even does a pretty good job as an impromptu shelter, associate online editor Woodard noted: “When we forgot our tent on a camping trip with features editor Scott Evans and his wife, my wife and I spent the weekend sleeping in the F-Pace. It wasn’t the Four Seasons, but we actually slept pretty well. We even had a good view of the stars thanks to the panoramic moonroof.”

For me, the drive was like a broken-in pair of jeans by the end of our loan, but only in “light load” mode, with 9 pounds of air pressure removed from each tire. At factory specs, the F-Pace’s ride crashes over the line of acceptably stiff. If you’re going to live with this vehicle in an area with especially bad pavement (hello, Detroit), consider avoiding it entirely—or swapping to a tire and wheel combination that gives you more bump-soaking sidewall.

The 340-horsepower V-6 took a second to spin up, but once underway it was always ready to punch holes in traffic, with a satisfyingly hollow growl. I spent the first 5,000 miles driving around in Normal mode and most of the rest of the time in ECO, which limbers up throttle response and aims for the most efficient gearing. Mother Earth–loving chill-out modes like this usually come at the expense of immediacy, but Jaguar’s ECO mode is one of the best. It didn’t turn the F-Pace into a penalty box in exchange for fair fuel economy. The 35t powertrain struck quite a nice balance, so it’s a shame the engine is an orphan, launched in year one as a stopgap ahead of the turbo four-cylinder gas and diesel options (a 380-hp version of the engine remains available, however).

All 2016 and newer Jaguar vehicles come with “EliteCare,” which is a limited warranty covering five years or 60,000 miles, complimentary scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance, and updates to the infotainment system (which are regular). Jaguar claims EliteCare is best in class, and a quick check of the competition reveals that to be true, sorta. Audi, BMW, Infiniti, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz offer fewer years and/or miles on their warranties. The only one that matches Jaguar (and betters, with an additional 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty) is Genesis—but it does not currently have a CUV that rivals F-Pace.

The only mechanical issue we had with our vehicle was the combined ignition and auto stop/start gremlin, which was covered for free under EliteCare. While in for that service, we requested a four-wheel alignment that cost $99.00.

At the very tail end of our loan, our F-Pace did start to creak a bit coming in and out of driveways and over speedbumps, similar to the way our long-term BMW M3 did. I didn’t get a chance to have the dealer check out the problem to see if it was pieces and parts of the interior rubbing or the dust-in-the-door-seals issue we discovered in our BMW. That will unfortunately remain a question, but for the record, our F-Pace never left us stranded or completely failed to start, and none of the major systems threw error codes or warning lights. For at least one of the aforementioned road warriors, this wasn’t enough.

“I’m torn on the F-Pace,” Woodard said. “It sounded great, the V-6 made plenty of power, and it ended up being surprisingly fun to drive. It was also a practical daily driver, offering plenty of room for four adults, a week’s worth of groceries, and with the rear seats down, two bicycles. On the other hand, it had way too many electrical issues for a new car. From the infotainment system regularly glitching to the rearview camera occasionally not coming on when I put the car in reverse and all the surprise shutdowns, there was just too much that kept going wrong. Jaguar has some work to do before I’d feel comfortable recommending the F-Pace to a friend or family member.”

I can recommend an F-Pace, new or off-lease, provided interested parties are fully informed of the issues we had. Part of this is because of a new wrinkle to my loanership experience this time around: I discovered the extremely helpful world of online forums. After publication of our F-Pace intro, Greg Craig, an owner of the more powerful F-Pace S, reached out with the helpful suggestion to reduce my tire pressures and to consult the community at fpaceforum.com if I ever needed assistance. And so I did, about random topics including the stop/start issue, updates to the ICTP system, and creaks at 22,000 miles. The ability to compare notes and seek advice from a community was helpful and reassuring.

As my time with the orphan F-Pace 35t drew to a close, I found myself oddly sad about its departure. I’m normally an “on-to-the-next” kinda guy, but this Jaguar had character rare in modern cars, beauty and athleticism I never tired of, and flaws that weren’t deal breakers.

What are legal steps to resolving an auto insurance claim?

Allstate was supposed to compensate me for X amount of damage done to my car by the driver who had insurance upto 5 grand. Notice that I did not have insurance with AllState but that because the driver was at fault, and had coverage of upto $5000, AllState has agreed to pay me a portion of that 5 grand. However, the problem is the driver who was at fault is not agreeing to this and demands more in loss from AllState. We won’t say, “Be careful at night.” We would say something like, “Have you had interaction with a man knocking on your door at night?” The client says, “No. I have not.” Then we say, “Be careful of the knock that will come in the evening. Keep your doors locked, look through the peep hole, and, if you don’t recognize him, don’t open it up.” We pick up on a detail and hone it down; sometimes we can hone it down to hair color, ethnicity, height or personality. I think that’s why [my character] Abby Cooper has worked so well—because she is very detailed while discussing things to come or things that have happened involving a crime. She gives a lot of clues, but never the answer. The tricky part of writing an intuitive-based novel is retaining the mystery while giving enough specifics to make it believable.

What tips do you have for writers on writing realistic psychics and mediums?

It’s a difficult task. It came easy to me because it’s what I know. Avoid all the stereotypes: the overly-dramatic, fainting, bangle-wearing psychics. Avoid the psychic who is always on the verge of panic in talking about difficult subjects. Intuitives have touched on difficult subjects enough not to have super huge emotions over it. Sit for a couple of readings from good intuitives. We have a similar language; we say things like, “It feels like this…” or “I have a sense of…” It’s important to discuss the physicality of how we look when we are reading someone. If you look at my videos, you can see: When I’m cued in on someone, there is a look that comes over me. When I’m giving a message, I tend to look down and to the right. Most good intuitives do this. When I did research on this, I was intrigued—looking down and to the right accesses memory. That is a telltale sign that you’re in front of a real intuitive, because they are tapping into something, energetically speaking, that feels more like a memory. It’s not something they are making up.

What tips do you have for writers who hope to pen a mystery?

I think it’s really important to get dialogue right. A lot of writing can be really stiff and formal. You want to write the way people speak and the way you speak. I think it’s so important that people read their dialogue out loud to themselves. Read every word, and try to take the stiffness out of it.

As far as tips for writing mystery, I’m a big fan of a twisty ending. I am a big fan of writing myself into a corner and seeing if I can get myself out of it. I think it’s important to make sure that you’re going in a direction that hasn’t been done ad nauseam and isn’t too obvious. Make sure you have enough dead bodies and suspects to make it interesting, and have an ending that the readers can’t see coming.

Describe your current novel, When, in your own words.

When is the story of the importance of realizing that our time here is limited. To me, it was important to get the message to young people that we have a limited number of days. I wanted readers to consider what their expiration day is and that maybe it’s closer than they think. Question the choices you’re making; if they are bad, change them.

How did you come up with the idea for the book?

My best friend’s father-in-law was dying of bone cancer. She was caring for him in her house. She called me, exhausted and depressed. She said, “This is unbearable. He is in pain.” I told her he would live through the holidays and die shortly after that. He did. He died in January. I heard a tiny bit of relief in her voice because his suffering would end. In one way, it was a cool ability in that moment to offer her a bit of peace, but it was awful to have to say, “You’re gonna lose him.”

We all know our birthdates, but not the day we die. I thought, Wouldn’t it be interesting if I had a character who could predict the exact date that someone would die? How would that affect them and the family around them? She is a young adult, so that makes it harder for her. I wanted it to be a mystery, so I threw in a serial killer, and you have When.

Mysticism, mystery and murder are essential in your fiction. Do you deliberately pursue subjects that involve these elements, or do they come to you organically?

They come organically, the path of least resistance. It’s easiest for me to write this way; it’s organic. It’s become my style. You can recognize a book from me.

Can you describe your writing process?

I head to the library Monday through Friday, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. I take a backpack, and I treat it like going to work. I crack out 1-=0 pages in that four hours, and I have a book in six weeks.

How do you discover your characters?

Most of them come from interactions with people I know well. Cat is loosely based on my sister. Most of my villains have shades of my mother; rather than spending time on a couch [at a therapist’s office], I write.

Tell me about your publishing journey.

Abby Cooper was my first foray into publishing—and she got rejected. I sent queries to 121 agents. A couple said, “Send me the full manuscript,” and she got rejected by every single one. My current agent, whom I adore, left the door open for a rewrite. I returned it to him in 10 days. I rewrote 11 chapters. He thought, since I returned the changes so quickly, that I didn’t take him seriously. He was disappointed, so he didn’t even open it for a month. When he finally opened it, he was like, “Oh, she did make the changes.” He offered me representation. I knew, in that moment, my life had changed. Abby went on to sell 250,000 copies.

How did you cope with rejection in the querying process?

Not well. Who does? It’s terrible. There was wine—me whining with wine. Rejection physically hurts. There is a quote that gets me through: An agent who rejected me sent a pamphlet that said, “If anything can prevent you from becoming a writer, go ahead and let it. If nothing can, persevere.” If I wanted to be a writer, and I couldn’t let the rejections stop me. Writers write. It’s what we do. I learned to take in the hurt, have a pity party, and keep going.

Looking back, is there one moment that you consider the biggest in your career so far?

I’ve been very lucky. Making the New York Times Bestsellers list was lucky. Warner Brothers optioned When, [for television], so my character Maddie is heading for big things. The one moment when my life changed direction in a positive way—and the highlight of my career—was getting my agent. It was an overwhelming feeling, having an agent who got what I was trying to do. He was excited, and he was ready to be my knight. That was the biggest moment—my favorite.

Did you celebrate becoming a New York Times Bestselling Author?

The day the list came out, I went to Starbucks at 6:00 in the morning, in the pouring rain, and had the barista take a picture of me holding the list up while I’m sobbing and crying. [Later I celebrated] with a glass of champagne—I had a bottle in the fridge because I had been close. I made the extended list a few times. The bottle has been in the fridge for three years, so I drank it. I was like, “Why am I drinking this? I don’t like it.”

Any advice for new writers?

This thing is such a gamble. Not being published says nothing about your talent or ability; it just means you haven’t found the right person to fall in love with your stories. Publishing is hard. Hone your skills, and keep working at it. Write a little every day. Keep it routine.

How has your life changed since publication?

In great ways. I have been able to quit the day job, and that was wonderful. I get to do what I love. I make myself laugh every day. If I don’t, it wasn’t a good writing day. I have colleagues that I love, like my editors and my agent Jim. They have become like family to me. They have enriched my life in so many ways.

What’s up next for you?

I’m working on a spin-off from the Abby Cooper series featuring Cat and Gilly. I am really in love with that now. I am writing a YA endeavor. I’m working on a fantasy series. It has a protagonist who’s not quite bad or good—she rides that edge. It’s a fantasy-based mystery series that has a mystery within a mystery. It’s told from her point of view in addition to a man’s perspective, and they overlap. I’ve also been thinking of doing another series that’s been in my head and won’t leave, so I am thinking of developing that—a sort of adult mystery, darkly humorous series.
