One of the most generally useful things to come out of Hbomberguy's plagiarism video and Todd in the Shadows' similar video on misinformation is how they bring transparency to the internet phenomenon of "I made up a guy to get mad at".

Seriously, I've seen people make up a lot of stupid shit on the internet over the years and it's often just a manipulative attempt to paint a group of marginalized people in a bad light.

That's the TL;DR version of this post. 

ANYWAY here is the long version

Those videos are mostly about James Somerton's plagiarism of other queer people's work. However I'd like to talk about that 20-30% of Somerton's original writing- and oh boy. It's mostly about complaining about White Straight Women and misgendering well-known trans creators such as Rebecca Sugar and calling Becky Albertalli a straight woman while it's pretty common knowledge that she was forced to out herself as bi because she received so much harassment over "being a cishet woman who appropriates LGBT+ stories".

One thing that irks me especially is how in his Killing Stalking and Gay Shipping videos Somerton brings up how straight women/ teen girl shippers exploit gay men for their personal sexual fantasies. This gets brought up several times in his videos.

Being all up and arms about Somerton being a "White Cis Gay Who Hates Women and Queer People tm" is not that useful because the kind of rhetoric he's using is extremely common in fandom and LGBT+ spaces on Tumblr, TikTok and Twitter. We really don't need to bring Somerton's identity to this since he is in no way an unique example.

It's hypocritical to make this about an individual person when I've seen A TON of posts, tweets and videos where queer people talk about these Sinister Straight Women who are supposedly out there fetishizing and exploiting queer men. It's pretty clear to me that this is just an excuse to shit on women and queer people for having any sexual interests. At worst these comments are spreading misinformation about BL, a form of media that has been excessively studied by both Asian feminists and Asian queer women.

This all sounds really familiar and I think it's good that people are calling it out as what it is: misogyny and transphobia. I'd also point out the potentially racist motives behind being this hypervigilant about Asian media.

People can absolutely be misogynist regardless of gender or orientation. I really don't know why we need to create some kind of made up enemy to get mad at. I actually think it's almost sinister how "anti-fujoshi" people call Slash shippers and fujoshi misogynists or claim that they have internalised misogyny while being dismissive about women's interests and creative pursuits under Japanese obscenity laws, China's censorship, book bans in American schools and various other disadvances that are part of being a queer and/or female creator.

I think we shouldn't be naive about the bad faith actors who want to turn queer people against each other. For example Fujoshi.info mentions anti-gender (TERF, GC etc) movement using this kind of rhetoric as well.

My worst teaching experience so far was last semester when in the last thirty minutes of class I assigned students an article for discussion. The article was about how laws vilifying transgender children were abusive, a standard article from the resources provided by the department; I did choose to add it to my syllabus, but it wasn't me going rogue with some out-there thing, just dipping into a small pool of approved teaching materials. The ensuing discussion was pretty fucking horrible to say the least.

I'm not even trans but the sheer blatant contempt for the article and its author was eye-opening. A little frightening even, considering that this is apparently the kind of opinion fuelling real laws that are killing trans people. In my fairly conservative home country, people just don't talk about it and most people don't seem aware of trans issues at all. I guess I assumed that liberal US college students would be more accepting. But some of these undergrads were calling the authors of the former social justice warriors, complaining the article was judgemental, biased, unscientific, did not consider the validity of bigoted alternate perspectives etc. Right after we were discussing common logical fallacies.

For the record: I felt like I handled it badly. I tried pulling out stats and countering arguments to persuade them. We had 10 minutes left. I later consulted with my mentor and addressed the snafu the next class, but I doubt it did anything. The news and rightwing politicians scaremonger about colleges brainwashing young people into tolerance but I couldn't even do that. I keep going over what I should have said and done instead, imagining that maybe another professor with more experience and authority could have refuted every argument perfectly and maybe changed even one mind. It's just a big fucking regret.

J.K. Rowling’s supporters frequently claim the author has never actually said or done anything transphobic. It’s a position you can see on social media, in the pages of the New York Times, and even on a new podcast with Rowling herself.

It’s also an easily debunked lie.

Although some in the media distort the anger directed at Rowling from trans activists, trans people, and allies, the truth is those feelings — not just anger, but betrayal and grief — are justified. Rowling has made her antagonistic position on trans issues clear through tweets, sound bites, actions, and even a 3,600-word blog post. By 2023, her transphobia has become so rampant and constant that it’s difficult to build a completely comprehensive timeline of it. For those attuned to it, she doesn’t have to spell it out every single time; it’s a huge part of her identity. 

We actually didn't set out intending to write this article, but it turns out that it's really hard to find a full, comprehensive, clear rundown of all Rowling's major transphobic statements and actions. Most of what's out there either includes extraneous info like what Harry Potter actors think, or stops around June 2020. But of course we all know Rowling has kept going.

This timeline starts in 2014 and is current as of a month ago.

Tang Sanzang looked up at Sun Wukong's call and felt a smile form despite himself. "Oh, how lovely!" A beautiful meadow of wildflowers spread out as far as the eye could see. After weeks of just traveling through farmland and villages, the sight was welcome, if not a little unusual. Sanzang was used to the tame gardens of the emperor's palace or the monastery. "It's nice that you have such an appreciation for nature, disciple."

"I'm not even gonna respond to that," Wukong instead grabbed Ao Lie's reins. "Can we take a quick break here? Ao Lie's looking pretty tired." Sanzang glanced down. The dragon-turned-horse did look a little tired, considering how the in and out of his breathing felt a little quicker under him.

"Hey!" Zhu Bajie said. "I'm tired too!"

"You're not carrying anything," Wukong didn't even look at him. "Please, Master?"

"Alright," Sanzang slipped off Ao Lie's back. By now, he was well-trained in the art of mounting and dismounting. The emperor, who long mourned his lack of grace when it came to riding, would be pleased. "It will be nice to meditate and take in this scenery-" And Wukong was gone, already wading through the flowers. The monk sighed and settled next to Ao Lie, who had transformed into his dragon form and now laid on the road.

Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing settled next to him, watching as Wukong started to gather flowers. "How unmanly," Bajie scoffed, tapping his fingers against his knee. "He's acting like a maiden with all those flowers."

Sanzang moved to scold, but based on the slap of a hand against skin, Wujing was already beating him to it. "You promised to say nothing about his gender, you ass. And, there's nothing wrong with gathering flowers," the river demon said. "They're beautiful and a good way to relieve stress. Didn't you say that his mountain was heaving with flowers?"

"Yes, but-"

"No buts, Bajie," Wukong was back. Somehow, in the few minutes he had been away, he had an arm full of flowers that he didn't set down until he was sitting across from Sanzang. One cosmos flower was tucked behind his ear. It was an odd choice, considering the flower's meaning and Wukong's personality, but he held his tongue. Wukong actually looked strikingly young at the moment, with flower petals in his short curls and a radiant smile across his features, and he didn't want to ruin his peace. "Otherwise, you're not gonna get a flower crown."

"Ooh!" The sound of magic twisting was before Ao Lie, in all his bubbly glory, rested his chin on Sanzang's shoulder. "May I have one Wukong?!" Wujing was already nodding in agreement while Bajie looked away.

"Yeah!" Wukong was already pulling out flowers, twisting and braiding the stems together. His fingers were nimble and quick, suggesting years of practice. "But I'm making a flower crown for Master first."

Sanzang blinked. "Me first?"

"Yes, you." Wukong glanced up at him, a soft chuckle coming out at whatever expression he had. "It might be a little shabby since it's been a while, but I wanted to make yours first."

Ah. The monk wasn't sure how to respond to that, to any of this. He looked away from Wukong's soft expression, unsure of how to respond to even the way his heart beat in his chest. Before he could figure out something, his hat was pulled off. He looked back in time to see the green settle on his head.

"You look good, Master!"

This had been a bad idea. This was so bad for his heart.

"Thank you, Wukong."
