yooooo im SO tired, have a health update 💞

(which was going to be another video update but then a bird came and i got distracted and now im too tired to speak lol. also WOW imagine being so pale you create your own god rays slkdjf)

so, ive been feeling like hot garbage for some time, which is perhaps not surprising with the whole "was poisoned via chemo for a year, is still recovering" thing. Recently my heart has been feeling Not Good TM, and the fatigue waves are getting pretty extreme at times.

So, I followed this up with my doctor, very much expecting it to be a case of "no you're just out of shape / your asthma is playing up / you're just being super lazy, try harder, etc". He booked me a specialised heart test which I had last week.

Uhhh apparently I wasn't just being pathetic! (Which is somewhat gratifying to know that there is a reason things have been so hard lately and it's not just in my head)

There is a thing called your Ejection Fraction, which is essentially a measure of how much oxygenated blood your heart is pumping around your body -- its the factor that keeps you feeling energised.

Mine has dropped. Fairly significantly. When I had the same heart scan in October, mid-way through chemo, I was still retaining a lot of my heart health and muscle mass from when i was pre-chemo, so my EF was sitting at about 80. Which is a sign I was initially quite physically fit (or, to quote my oncologist: "giiiiirl, you a Boston Marathon runner or what?)

Since my last scan, my EF has dropped to 58. Which is still actually higher than average, most people sit at about 55, so I've dropped to an average range lol.

My heart is working, but such a significant jump is still cause for concern. My oncologist said that if I had been less young and fit, it would have been a case of dropping from 55 to somewhere in the 30s, to which he said "you'd struggle to even walk down that corridor at that point."

At this stage, I have a (hopefully reversible!) cardiomyopathy. Unfortunately, reduced heart and lung function can be complications of the two immune therapy drugs I am taking to prevent my cancer from coming back. So the current course of action is to put my immune therapy treatments on hold for 9 weeks to let my heart recover.

Yes, that is a tad spooky, but the drugs have a very long half-life, so I should be okay not taking them for that short period. On the plus side, this should hopefully improve my overall quality of life while my heart heals, and a break from immune therapy will be really nice anyway, because that shit hurts lmao.

Otherwise, the metastatic cancer in my spine and my hips remains stable and is still showing signs of healing because I am AWESOME AND COOL. Oh, and I also had a massive internal lesion (a chemo complication I never mentioned here bc like... if I told you guys every little thing that's wrong with me, we'd be here all day lmao) but that is now healing on its own too!! Woo!

So... ye. Gonna have a nap, knowing that medically my heart is broken and I have yet another reason to take it easy now haha.

Send me lots of "oi don't get cancer again in the next 9 weeks you absolute nugget" type vibes. I don't think I will, I'm not worried, but yk yk vibes are nice 🥰💝💖💓💕🩷💞 if you are still reading, I hope you have a wonderful day!!!

not to be very annoying, but do you happen to know any good books/resources about lgbt slang/identities in victorian/edwardian/etc england? (i mean, things such as lesbians calling each other "toms" and the like). don't worry if you don't know any, but i just figured i'd ask since this was kinda in your Area Of Interest so you might know some off the top of your head.

the not annoying at all but this is a more complex question than at first glance hahaha

TL;DR: there are many types of queer language / we have way more info about men, who have their own lexicon / this era is widely seen as the era in which the concept of identity is actually coming into play / books list at the end, scroll down til you reach bolded text if you don’t want my commentary.

so when you’re looking at mid 19th - interwar lgbt communities, whether in europe or the uk or the usa it doesn’t really matter bc this is quite universal, you’ve got at least three registers, for lack of an easier word:

how self-identified homosexual, inverted, queer, abnormal etc men (henceforth gay men) speak with each other

how self-identified “” women (henceforth lesbian women) speak with each other

interactions between these groups

these naturally intersect with other socioeconomic class factors.

back to england specifically:

despite legal considerations gay men have the most agency and ability to move around and therefore are more likely to interact with each other and form communities. so now you have additional registers:

upper middle / upper class

middle / lower middle / working class (more registers here but nobody asked me and i promise i will give you recs soon)

again, interactions between them

the latter category has limited applications; most of them have to do with prostitution or casual sex and tend to be about categorizing people in terms of what sex acts they participate in. (this is universally true of most forms of gay slang and/or their origins for obvious reasons) think locker room talk. OR, we’re looking at cross class relationships and how other people view members of cross class relationships. not to generalize bc there are other things than this but what is best documented here is the upper class pov of these interactions

for the first category there is much less slang & unique community language, when you look at letters and works of literature etc etc people are picking and choosing from both medical/psychiatric terminology, which is developing rapidly from the 1860s on, and like, classical works; you get a lot of alluding to things. artistic communities (bloomsbury group, natalie clifford barney’s harem in paris and what have you) meanwhile are sort of all over the map. but bc this isn’t Polite Society talk, most of the sources for this kind of language tend to be limited in scope. which is true for all subculture language really but like in this case, authors of the day who are writing what they know are we think giving a pretty accurate picture of what their actual communities were like... but it’s put through a filter for publication.

by the 20th century urban working class gay men in certain circles are using polari, a subcultural lexicon which came from mid/late 19th century theatre and music hall slang, which came from fairground cant, seafaring , labor slang, Yiddish, cockney, theatre slang, fishmarkets, French, Italian, underground crime rings literally i could go on and there’s lots of debate about this. it’s turn of the century when it comes to be used very widely within the gay community, and while its origins are in london it made it to other uk urban centres fairly quickly. this lasted well into the latter half of the 20th century and is the base for a lot of community slang today, which leads me to

lesbian women, who also used polari, albeit to a lesser extent. these were primarily lesbians who were also in the 3rd camp above - ones who are involved in the community and interacting w/ gay men regularly. (”straight women who work in theatre” is another category of woman polari speakers haha but performance slang went thru many changes and eventually things got p separate so you had fairground & theatre cant and gay subculture slang having similar roots but very distinct in usage)

for lesbian communities the same thing as w gay men applies for the upper classes just to a lesser degree due to the relative lack of a community experienced by women

but a very important point here is that, ESPECIALLY during the victorian period, less so moving into the 20th century, intimate relationships between women are viewed very, very differently than those between men - male relationships have hard and fast boundaries of what is and isnt acceptable, those of women do not. 

the development of identity w/ sexuality for women i think in many ways had a lot more to do with women who expressed their gender differently than women who had intimate exclusive relationships w/ other women 

anyway the point is there unfortunately is no like comprehensive text for All Queer Language at this point in time, nor for the development of sexual identity, and the nature of this field (linguistics + history + sociology about queer stuff) means that a lot of the good work is in academic articles which i do NOT know off the top of my head. :-( but here’s some stuff !!

LIST OF THE ACTUAL BOOKS SORRY ABOUT ALL THAT

ok so these are all nonfiction, mostly academic nonfiction, but i want to stress that contemporary literature is a REALLY good way to get a (often rose tinted but not always) look into subculture and there are many novels that play with and/or poke at the ongoing development of sexual identity, especially in edwardia, especially especially in the 1920s, so if youve got endless time to read on your hands it is absolutely worth poking around there.

i have a list in the works of 1920s literature that has lgbt stuff in it and i realise thats a bit late for you but even so!!

also: compilations of letters, memoirs, etc are like super super invaluable

I really liked your addition to the meta about Sansa's relationship with Ned. You write in the last paragraph that Sansa is very different from her siblings and doesn't really interact with any of them which i found really interesting since Arya (and sometimes Jon) is always thought of as the 'outsiders' at Winterfell. Do you think it's maybe more fair to say that Sansa was the outsider in the family in a way despite her adhering to and being praised for her proper, ladylike behaviour?

You pose an interesting question that is also hard to answer because there is hardly any canon material about how Sansa interacted with all her siblings at Winterfell. Of all the Starklings, only Jon is really a bit of an “outcast” because he’s a bastard and that has a very real effect on his place in the family and how he’s treated. Arya may feel like an outcast because she doesn’t conform to gender expectations but she only appears to have a contentious relationship with Sansa - and that has to do with their differences and Arya’s low self-esteem. And when you add Ned’s obvious favouritism of Arya over Sansa, which Sansa noticed and resented, then you get a volatile brew.

She does have a fond memory of a snow ball fight with Arya but not much else though we do know that both Arya and Bran thought her romanticism stupid. A lot of fans seem to think that Robb and Sansa had a special relationship but there’s actually NO textual evidence for this whatsoever! Her relationship with Arya was contentious for several reasons I think - they are very different people with different interests and we do get a few hints that Sansa would have liked that her sister also had an interest in the things that Sansa likes. Another reason that their relationship is conflict-ridden even at WF (though it gets so much worse after the Trident) is partly due to Arya’s low self-esteem because she’s not good at the stuff Sansa is good at and in this respect we mustn’t overlook the part that Septa Mordane played in this. That woman is the root of Arya’s self-esteem issues. I do recall something about Sansa being closer to Bran but it’s been a while since I’ve read her chapters. We don’t know much about her relationship with Jon but most assume that it is distant because she calls him half-brother. I do think that there’s some truth in this but it is also notable that he has fond memories of her - and it is just adorable that she at some point instructed him in how to talk to girls. 

We hardly get any examples to examine the sibling dynamic of the Starklings as a whole. However, there is one example that may be somewhat illuminating:

Suddenly Arya remembered the crypts at Winterfell. They were a lot scarier than this place, she told herself. She’d been just a little girl the first time she saw them. Her brother Robb had taken them down, her and Sansa and baby Bran, who’d been no bigger than Rickon was now.

…

Robb took them all the way down to the end, past Grandfather and Brandon and Lyanna, to show them their own tombs. Sansa kept looking at the stubby little candle, anxious that it might go out. Old Nan had told her there were spiders down here, and rats as big as dogs. Robb smiled when she said that. “There are worse things than spiders and rats,” he whispered. “This is where the dead walk.” That was when they heard the sound, low and deep and shivery. Baby Bran had clutched at Arya’s hand.

When the spirit stepped out of the open tomb, pale white and moaning for blood, Sansa ran shrieking for the stairs, and Bran wrapped himself around Robb’s leg, sobbing. Arya stood her ground and gave the spirit a punch. It was only Jon, covered with flour. “You stupid,” she told him, “you scared the baby,” but Jon and Robb just laughed and laughed, and pretty soon Bran and Arya were laughing too. (AGoT, Arya IV)

Both Bran and Sansa are pretty scared - Sansa so much that she runs away. But while Arya gets mad, she only gets mad on behalf of Bran - and neither Robb nor Jon, who oare the oldest, bother to run after Sansa to reassure her. The result of the prank is a lot of laughter in the end - and here Sansa is excluded from the sibling camaraderie because none of them bothered with her. It is rather sad when looked at from Sansa’s POV. It is only one incident and thus we should be careful to generalize but it could indicate that Sansa was indeed isolated from her siblings.

I do think that there are several factors in play that results in Sansa being somewhat isolated within her own family when it comes to her siblings. I’ve written about this in the first essay in my Winterfell’s Daughter series so I’ll just quote myself:

Sansa is very much a child that conforms to the expections that accrues to her gender and her social status. She is a conformist and obedient child and yet she is also a bit of an “outsider” within her own family. This “outsider” status is visually articulated from the very beginning of the story. When we first meet the Starks, Ned, Catelyn and all they boys are outside in the castle courtyard. On the other hand, the audience meet Sansa and Arya in an indoor space, engaged in the art of embroidering, which is coded as exclusively feminine. However, Arya quickly leaves the confines of the sewing circle and runs outside to engage in archery with her brothers. Sansa’s difference from her family is further emphasized when the Starks line up to meet the King. All of the Starks are clad in fur-decorated cloaks. However, unlike the cloaks of her parents and her siblings, Sansa’s cloak is of of a light blue colour that matches her dress. Visually, she sticks out like a sore thumb.

From the very start, Sansa is singled out as different from the rest of the Stark through purely visual means. It isn’t something that the show (or even the books) delves very deep into but part of Sansa’s isolation within her own family is tied to her gender. Like all other highborn children, boys and girls are educated differently in the Stark family. The distinction between inside and outside spaces encapsulates the gender divide in the very first episode.

The lives of highborn girls are proscribed by a number of restrictive social conventions – almost all highborn women in Westeros are forced to engage in compulsory femininity. This is not a problem for Sansa since her interests and talents conform to the social restrictions placed upon her gender. Arya, on the other hand, doesn’t conform. She rebels and engages in activities normally reserved for boys. In that sense, Arya shares something with her brothers that Sansa doesn’t. In fact, Sansa’s feminine world is very much cut off from the sphere her brothers inhabit. Thus, Sansa conforming to gender norms also marks her as a bit of an outsider in a family of four boys and one tomboy. Therefore, it shouldn’t be that surprising that Sansa is eager to leave Winterfell – even if it is her safe and loving home. She desperately wants to find a place where she “fits” in a way she doesn’t “fit” in at Winterfell.

This analysis is show based but I think it holds true for the books as well. Both interests and gender norms played a part in separating Sansa from her siblings - gender dictated differences in education, most notably when it comes to weapon’s training for the boys and sewing and music for the girls. Interests also matter - and it is noteworthy that there’s very much an inside/outside divide between Sansa and her siblings when it comes to their interests. Sansa likes doing embroidery, reading, singing and playing an instrument and writing poetry. All indoor activities whereas the rest of her siblings favour outdoor activities. 

So yes, in this sense, Sansa is a bit of an outsider in her own family - she is really the “odd one out” since none of her siblings really share her interests - and both Arya and Bran find the things she likes stupid. Because Arya and the boys prefer outdoor activities, they share something that Sansa is excluded from. It really isn’t very surprising that Sansa so eager to leave Winterfell and find a place where felt that she would “fit in” at the beginning of the story.

A/N: I soaked off my acrylics because I couldn’t stand not being able to write for you guys. But now I’m all good, and I’m writing this one a bit longer to make up for how shitty the last one was. AND Y’ALL SHOULD SEND IN MORE REQUESTS BECAUSE I WANNA WRITE SOMETHING THAT YOU GUYS WANT T~T please…

      “… And we need more milk, and your candy, and some- Tae, where’d you go?!” Looking around, your friend had already wandered off to the other parts of the store. “Goddamn it Taehyung…” Jimin had left to get a few things he needed, so you were stuck with the duty of finding the lost puppy alone. Pushing your cart with a heavy sigh, you started walking down all the isles. Where would this boy be… A sudden jump on your back had you swinging around, bringing a knee to the accuser’s crotch. A low groan came from the man, your eyes locking on the mop of brown hair. “Shit, Tae?! Fuck, get up, get your ass up!!!” Trying to tug him up by the collar of his shirt, a breathy moan came from his lips. hOLY FUCK, WHY IS HE MOANING??? WHY??? NO??? THAT’S NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN??? “Tae, get up!”

      “Fuck, sweetheart… God, shit, ugh, you have a good leg…” A blush was bright on your cheeks, helping him up and sheepishly smiling to the people around you. His hand slithered its way around your waist, kissing your temple. “Oh my god… Okay, I’ll remind myself to never give you backhugs. Goddamn.” His low laugh floated in the air, taking hold of the cart and walking along with you. “Now, we’re gonna go get some candy, and then we’ll get everything else. Are you okay?” Looking back up to him at his words, you realized you were zoning out because of a few factors. You kneed him in the dick. You heard him moan, and shit, it was fucking hot. Then he got up, kissed your temple, held your waist, and walked around with you like a couple. That’s totally normal, right?

      “Huh? Oh, yeah, um, I’m fine. Don’t worry.” You tried to give him a smile, but a quick peck to your lips had your eyes widening to saucers. “Wha-” Taehyung’s grin grew, an adorable giggle falling from his lips. His hand ruffled your hair, as he pushed the cart further. 

      Once you heard your name, you snapped out of your daydream and looked back up at Tae, who had his eyebrow quirked into a perfect arch. “Did you even hear me? Are you okay?” Fuck, I IMAGINED THAT?! GOD FUCKIN-

      “Yeah, yeah, um, I’m good. C’mon, let’s go.” Tugging on his sleeve, you trudged your way through all on the isles. Fucking imagination, ruining my dreams… “Get all the stuff you want, I’ll leave it up to you.” A boxy smile adorned his face, as he walks along you and throws some stuff into the cart. Upon seeing how gloomy you were suddenly looking, his grin faded to that of a frown. He couldn’t stand to see you like this. And he couldn’t stand the fact that you didn’t know. So, coming up behind you again, he hoisted you up onto his shoulders, laughing at the way you grasped his head. “Tae! What are you doing?! You’re gonna get us kicked out!”

      You were sure this wasn’t your imagination, and you tried to scramble your way off of his shoulders. But, his huge hands had a tight grip on your thighs, keeping you there. Falling backwards, you sighed as you dangled off him, your hair sweeping the floor. “Tae, if you drop me, you’re paying for my medical bills.”

      Another laugh bubbled from his throat, and he pulled you back up to a sitting position. “You looked sad, I hate seeing you like that. It makes me sad. But anyways, I think we have everything we need. I’ll pay.” he pushed the cart up to the registers, laughing and thanking people when they commented on how you two were the, “cutest couple they’ve ever seen”. The only thing you could do in response to that was to bury your head into the crook of his neck, getting “awww”ed even more. You weren’t against the idea of dating him, at all. I mean, really, who would be? After helping him carry everything out to the car, you put the car into shift.

      But, not before Jimin jumped onto the hood of the car and scared the living shit out of you.

      You jumped up as fast as humanly possible, banging your head threateningly hard against the roof of the car, your head slamming back down. Your movements stilled as darkness started to engulf your sight, black dots growing bigger and bigger. 

      Until it was all black.

      Quiet, gentle callings of your names woke you up, which then turned into hoarse, desperate please for you to wake up.

      “wHOA, whoa whoa whoa, what’s up? Tae? What’s wrong? Oh god, Tae, don’t cry, please don’t cry, it’s okay, I’m okay. Don’t worry.” You took his head in his hands, clutching it to your chest was pounding, your heartbeat pounding in your ears. Everything was spinning, the bright lights blinding, but you focused on the few tears slipping from his eyes and rolling down his flushed cheeks.

      The door busted open, a teary eyed Jimin coming. “Oh god. (Y/N). I-I’m so sorry, I was just gon-”

      Your laugh stopped him mid sentence, looking up at him. “Jimin, miss me with that bullshit. It’s okay, and I swear, if you try to apologize, you will trade places with me. Now, come on, I’m not staying in a death house thing any longer.” Jumping up, you ripped off the IV drip and headed to change in the bathroom.

      Also not knowing that the two boys got a clear view of your ass in the hospital gown.

      After signing out with two unusually quiet boys, you headed back out to the car. “Why are you two so silent all of a sudden?” Turing to look at them, you noticed how they both immediately looked back down to their feet. 

      Jimin was the first to speak up, scuffing his feet on the floor in a shy way. “Well… We-”

      “We saw your ass.”

      “TAEHYUNG!”

      “WELL AT LEAST I TOLD HER!!!” You were doubled over laughing, gripping the edge of the car. 

      “C-c’mon, let’s just get Jimin back to his apartment.” You weren’t allowed to drive, so you laid down on the blanket bed Tae had made for you, and watched the glaring fest the two at the front had. Once Tae had pulled into Jimin’s lot, he murmured a quiet “bye”, before speeding back to the dorms. You laughed as you saw how white his knuckles had turned from his grip, resting a hand on his shoulder so that they’d go back to normal.

      “Tae, calm downnnn. It’s okay baby boy.” You laughed and thought nothing of the little name you had called him, not noticing the bright blush on his cheeks. “Let’s go, we’re back.” You opened up the car door and slammed it shut, opening his as well and tugging him out. “So I was thinking we just binge watch whatever the hell you want tonight, and I’ll get popcorn duty. Sound good?” A simple nod was all you got from him, so you smiled and unlocked the door. As soon as you shut it, your body slammed back onto it, being met with the lust filled eyes of Taehyung. “T-Tae, what are you-”

      “I don’t think you’ll be calling be ‘baby boy’ for a long ass time after tonight.”

      And that definitely wasn’t a part of your imagination.

      The morning sun had shown through the windows, lines of light flooding into the small room. A quiet moan left Taehyung’s mouth, his back arching with cracks echoing through the air. “Babe?” His voice was husky, even lower than normally. “Are you awake yet?”

      A groan escaped your lips as you rolled over into his chest, as you quietly sighed. “What time is it…?”

      “Oh fuck. U-um, it’s… One?” This caused your eyes to shoot open, looking straight at him.

      “IT’S ONE?! OH MY GOD, WE’RE LATE!!!” You threw the covers off of you, standing up from your makeshift couch. “Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck… Where are all my shirts?” Rummaging around, Taehyung propped himself up on his elbows, a smirk tugging at his lips.

      “I don’t know about you, but I’m staying here. You can join me if you want~” You stopped in your steps, looking back up at him before ripping your shorts and shirt back off. His low laugh danced around you, the sound brightening up the room even more. Plopping back down next to him, you handed him the remote, tracing light circles on his chest. 

      You two stayed lounging around all day, slow and loving kisses being shared, tickle fights turning into make out sessions. The day was calm and quiet, something that you wished you could have every day. But, maybe in the future, add a few mini Taes running around, and your life would be complete. You were never into the idea of finding the right person and having kids - you were a more, “I’m gonna find a place, own some giant dogs and a million cats” type of gal. Now, running off to some warm, beach side house in California with Tae sounds like the perfect dream, having a couple of kids to grow up with the waves. It was your dream.

      You had both stayed up throughout the day, keeping each other company and snacking on bowls of ramen. You two had been reading a book to each other, going back and forth, before a loud bang at the door stopped you both.

      “Who is it…?”

      “Jimin!”

      FUCK.

      You jumped up, throwing on one of Tae’s shirts. You cracked the door open, looking up at him. “What’s up?”

      “I was wondering if you two…” His sentence ran off as he peeked through the crack at your body, lightly covered by Tae’s shirt that only went just below your pantie line. “Are you wearing his shirt…?” You felt a pair of arms wrap around you from behind, looking up to see Tae glaring at Jimin. Once again.

      “Yes, she is. And no, we’re fine staying here tonight. Now, anything else? No? Okay, bye Jimin.” He shut the door with a sigh, and looked down at you. “Baby… What’s wrong?”

      You found out that he had already known about the incident that happened between you and his friend previously, so you knew he didn’t mean that. “I mean… I don’t even know. I just don’t want you two being torn apart because of me, that’s all.” His lips pressed against yours as he grinned, his eyes fluttering back open to look at you once he broke away.

ive been feeling super weird lately and it’s probably partially bc i’m on my period but do you ever just feel like you’re being pulled in so many directions it might rip you apart? well i’m not gonna rip apart but i feel like so many ppl have been demanding things from me, my attention, my time, my energy, and it’s so draining. i feel like i need some quality alone time. but i’m a people pleaser i guess? i have such a hard time saying no to plans or cancelling on someone so i never do it even tho i should take time for myself. i always put ppl ahead of myself in that way. and then i keep thinking about how lance called me selfish and i can’t get it out of my head. he’s still mad at me about this fight we had two weeks ago and i think i’ll call him later. but i’m feeling so anxious and i can’t focus on work. which is making me more anxious. i stayed up til around 2 or 3 last night bc anthony came over bc he was upset about this situation he’s in with the girl he’s been seeing/the love of his life lol. he told me days ago that he needed a friend to talk to and i would usually drop everything to help a friend, but i wasn’t able to, so i had postponed it for a couple days and didn’t wanna cancel or flake again. and didn’t wanna neglect him as a friend. i wanted to help him out/be a shoulder for him to cry on or just be an ear for him to spill everything out to. i knew that having him come over would mean i wouldn’t have time to activate my new phone, work on my stories for work, or call lance (which i really need to do...), but i had him come over anyway bc he needed it. and this is something i normally wouldn’t think twice about, bc i tend to put peoples’ needs before my own pretty often, but i’m thinking about it now bc lance told me i’m selfish. and i feel guilty for not calling him yet. but i will.  i also keep thinking about the term “empath.” like a lot. i know i’m an empath. not like meaning i have supernatural powers bc obvs that’s ridiculous but i can definitely feel peoples’ emotions vividly. idk how to explain it. ever since i was little ive felt like ive understood how people felt about me. i could sense when a boy had a crush on me and i was always right about it. i would joke to myself that i had a sixth sense, but i never told anyone this out of fear of sounding crazy or narcissistic. but then years later, karen said something similar. something like she knows when a guy likes her or something and i was like yooo we both have a sixth sense. it doesn’t just apply to romantic feelings. and when someone i care about is hurting, it hurts me to the point where it’s (sometimes) physical. today jake told me he loves me bc i’m very compassionate and caring. i think i have a large capacity for empathy and it’s taken me a long time to be able to identify and articulate that. i think it’s part of why so many people are drawn to me. i read somewhere that people who need healing will gravitate towards empaths. that reminds me of my relationship with my emotionally abusive ex. it makes sense. but i also think some guys are attracted to me bc i’m sure of who i am. i’m also a pretty positive person, and i tend to smile a lot (notes ive picked up from people around me lol). i think people who are genuinely happy are naturally attractive. people are drawn to happiness and can tell when someone is feigning it.  i was thinking about this today: i have spent years cultivating my confidence. i would say “cultivating confidence” but i want to say cultivating my confidence bc i feel like its my own, it’s very personal. it’s different for everyone. i’ve spent so much time and energy working on myself, looking inside and analyzing myself, analyzing my insecurities and figuring out how to become more confident, bc i knew that everything i wanted would fall into place after that. i knew i would land any job i wanted, i would get any guy i wanted, etc. lance has told me so many times that i have a good head on my shoulders and that he admires how i’m able to do anything i set my mind to. and idc how corny it sounds, it’s true. i created this formula for myself and it’s worked. i can honestly say i’m happy with where i am in my life. i’m happy with who i am. i think big mouth is the tv show i was watching that touched on this. they said something about people who “know who they are.” i think people who are introspective and have figured themselves out have a certain glow. and they attract people who are still searching.  i think at a young age i realized that fear was stopping me from reaching my potential, and i simply wasn’t having that. i recognized my privilege and wanted to use my resources for good. i knew i had a talent for writing, rampant curiosity, a desire to help others, and a hunger for learning, so i became a journalist. but my point is, i reflected on my high school years a lot and i realized how much of it i spent being nervous. i remember feeling so nervous about such trivial things. and i didn’t want to be held back anymore. so i decided i wouldn’t be.  “So please ask yourself: What would I do if I weren’t afraid? Krisztian says: I've been mostly Paleo for about 5 years now based on one of your piror books.  Overall, it has worked well for me, with one exception.  I started to develop kidney stones on a regular basis.  I finally had them analyzed and they turned out to be calcium oxalate stones.  Upon reading up on this condition, it stems from a high amount of oxalate in the diet.  Unfortunatley, most of the foods I liked on Paleo happen to be super high in oxalate... spinach, nuts, seeds, dark chocolate, sweet potatoes.  The other wammy here is that I was initially avoiding dairy on Paleo which turns out to be worse for stones because one way to counteract high oxalate intake is to match it with high calcium to avoid stone formation.  I've since gone back to eating plenty of cheese and high fat dairy in my diet.

I'm curious if this is a common issue that you've seen and I'm wondering if this is something that might be helped by going to a keto diet.

2. [5:33] Sugar addiction Kathryn says: Hey Robb, I am really hoping you can give me some insight into why I can't seem to fully recover from sugar addiction. I have had a sweet tooth my whole life, but in recent years I have learned that I have a true addiction to sugar. In the last four years or so, I have studied a lot of nutrition, functional medicine and ancestral health perspectives and gone on a strict paleo diet for months at a time. In almost every way, a clean diet of whole foods makes me feel amazing (better sleep, clearer skin, joints and movement feels better, etc.), except, I become very depressed. It's not a mopey, weepy kind of depressed, it's literally a depression of all feeling, like I feel very little at all. But I do sometimes feel really, really irritable, or sometimes bouts of rage that don’t match the situations they arise in. But most of the time, I just feel blah. I thought this would go away after a couple of weeks or even a month or two of eating clean, but it didn't. In happy or exciting moments, it was like I just couldn't feel those emotions fully. I also noticed that I didn't crack jokes like I usually do or feel like being social. All my feelings were dulled. Even sad ones. And when I did fall off the diet, and eat sugar, I immediately felt cheerful again. To me, it seems that the years of sugar abuse have altered my brain enough that without sugar, I can't feel normal emotions anymore. So my question is concerning healing my brain. Is it possible to reverse these effects? The longest I have gone on a strict paleo diet is three months. I admit it was hard to keep going when I just didn't see myself ever feeling happy again. If it's possible to heal my brain and increase its capacity for proper dopamine signaling again, are there certain therapies or supplements that can precipitate and accelerate that healing? Perhaps I am ignorant of some other factor or mechanism at work here. I would be grateful for any insight or help you can give. [11:32] Metabolic Flexibility and Weight Loss/Maintenance Julia says: Robb and Nicki, I am very interested in the concept of metabolic flexibility and eagerly waiting to hear your upcoming lecture on this topic. Intuitively it makes sense that given variation in season and climate that humans would have relied on a menu of macronutrient combinations. My question is: how can developing metabolic flexibility be used as tool for weight loss/maintenance? I have been about 90% ketogenic for the past 28 months; the other 10% would be high carb meals which I have allowed as a metabolically flexible person. I can swing in and out of ketosis with ease; however, I have noticed that if I go through periods of higher carb, it does result in weight gain which is tough to lose even when reentering ketosis. I do crossfit almost daily and practice the 18:6 IF schedule, and I don't notice either of those things affecting my performance. Thanks!

Laura says: Hi Robb and Nicki, Thank you both for all you do! I've been a huge fan since 2010 and admire your relentless pursuit of the truth when it comes to health and nutrition.

My question is about my extremely low energy in the early afternoons. I know it is a common complaint, but I feel like I've done everything I can to fix the common mistakes  that lead to the afternoon slump, and I also feel like my exhaustion is too extreme to be normal for my age and health status.

I'm 32 years old, I eat low carbish (75-100g most days), have toyed with keto, eat mostly paleo with the addition of some dairy and occasional non gluten grains. I do crossfit 3x/week and spend most of my time chasing my 2 year old around. My sleep is good most of the time, and I do not have any major life stressors that effect me currently. No diagnosed health conditions, no rx meds.

I had bloodwork done recently, and my doctor was very impressed with the results, especially my blood lipids. A1c was 4.8, C-reactive protein 0.8, no thyroid antibodies present. Fasting blood sugar 78. The only things that were slightly out of range were homocysteine (slightly low at 4.6), Uric acid low at 2.4, serum iron slightly high at 148, and my free T3 was a little low at 2.5. Another Doctor years ago prescribed me naturethroid but I never took it.

Ive tried changing my diet in every way imaginable to try to combat a possible hypoglycemic or food sensitivity related slump after lunch.  I've eliminated various foods that people can be sensitive to,and ive even tried more carbs in the morning, but that leads to blood sugar imbalance and cravings all day. As a result, my breakfasts and lunches would fall under the keto umbrella, as I feel better when I eat carbs later in the day.

The only thing that seems to slightly help is not eating at all, but I just get so hungry! My activity level is fairly high and I don't feel like I'm a great candidate for intermittent fasting at this point.

My mom, who has had MS for about 30 years, does not eat all day and only eats dinner because she's says eating makes her tired. I just can't handle not eating at all, and I do feel fatigued and hypoglycemic if I try to skip meals.

I read Wired to Eat while I was pretty deep into a ketotic cycle, so I didn't immediately get to the 7-day carb test. Years of self-experimentation have led me to a relatively low carb (<50g/day) Paleo diet with an occasional 48 hour fast, an occasional ketotic cycle, and a very occasional carb re-feed. Genetic testing revealed some SNPs that predispose me to insulin resistance, and others that positively affect my fat metabolism, reinforcing the fact that I look, feel, and perform better eating in this fashion. I do enjoy my occasional carb binges, so I'd like to perform the carb test in order to whittle my food selections down to those least damaging to my metabolism; but I'm concerned that my postprandial blood glucose readings will be skewed upward because I don't regularly eat more than ten or fifteen grams of effective carbs at a time. Should I bring my daily and per-meal carb intake up for a certain period of time before starting the carb test, or is a 50 gram bolus of carbs small enough to give me a true measure of glucose tolerance for the purpose of food selection? Do you still do caffeine?  Do you force yourself to take breaks during writing?  How do you avoid sitting for 5/6 hours straight?

Sorry for all the questions, I've just been thinking about this a lot lately as I enter into a career pursuing my passion as a writer while trying to balance and prioritize my health.  As I am sure you can attest, writing can be all consuming if you let it and setting boundaries is vital -- though difficult, especially if you're in "the zone."  So I'd love to hear your thoughts.

[33:18] SECONDLY:  I'd love to get your thoughts on the mechanisms at play when writing or doing anything else that requires intense mental focus in regards to willpower.  Correct me if I am wrong, but it feels like for me, many aspects of writing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle (choosing healthy food over shitty stuff, hitting the gym, walking, etc.) can drain from the same willpower tank (if not just psychologically, and physically -- physiologically as well).  This isn't to say that both can't exist -- rather does one need to be given priority based on ordering of events throughout the day? 

For example, I feel my creativity comes to me first thing in the morning.  If I were to wake up and hit a Metcon first thing, I feel my creativity gets depleted from the shared willpower tank.  I feel this to be true with little things that chip away at my early morning start time as well.  For example, taking the time to make a big healthy breakfast, sitting in the sun, even a short walk, all delay me tapping into when I feel I am creatively primed -- but is it worth the sacrifice of my health?

I was curious if you have any thoughts on when or how you prioritize creativity.  Or maybe this is all just a bunch of bullshit like Robert Rodriguez says -- and our creativity is totally out of our control. 

Anyways, love the show and everything you do.  If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.

Good evening, everyone~! This week’s Thursday Book Club is officially beginning! Today we are discussing Goddess of Paradise by Dee S. / Beedee~! (http://paradise.bluedubia.com/)

Remember that Thursday discussions are completely freeform! However, every 30 minutes I will drop in OPTIONAL discussion questions in case you’d like a bit of a prompt. If you miss out on one of these prompts, you can find them pinned for the chat’s duration. Additionally, remember that while constructive criticism is allowed, our focus is fun and respectfully appreciating the comic. All that said, let’s begin!

QUESTION 1. What is your favorite scene in the comic so far and why?

my favorite scene so far i think is when eridu runs into ekka. it was nice to see a character actually be happy to see her after a slew of eridu running into charas who dont really care all that much. and i just think its a good balance in general to all the hard truths eridu has woken up to.

although my second favorite scene admittedly is probably when she meets amun. just cause amun is gonna win all those awards for being lazy and laid back

but in general i liked how casually amun reveals that nah bro, its been 1200 years of slumber. as if its no big deal (which tbf for gods probably kind of isnt to a degree but still XD)

My favourite scene was near the start of Chapter 4, with the human encounter. In large part because there was mention of a "dead human", making me think "wow that took a dark turn"... then it turned out she wasn' t dead and there was the whole "ick" factor, that wasn't dark at all.

Nice sort of twist, is I guess what I'm saying.

I also do like the Ekka scene though. In part because of my tendency to enjoy yuri ships.

ah that was a hilarious moment. where eridu is basically treating the priestess like shes some dead insect or roadkill. but i also like within the comedy you see a really blunt and significant view into how she views humans

Amun was cool, it was a good way to advance the plot, I'm not always keen on the laid back types though, heh.

Yeah, roadkill's kind of a good word the way that happened. ^.^

It's really interesting the way it's developed in first person overall too.

Reminds me a bit of a picture book, but the first person is a different take on that too.

for the record you mean 2nd person. first person is "I do this thing" second person is "you do this thing"

but yeah this is probably the first 2nd person comic ive run into. im interested to see where it goes cause 2nd person is generally the more difficult pov to make work but theres also a lot of potential for creative stuff

another scene i really like is when eridu shows up back on the island and all the green sprouts. cause its beautiful imagery. but im also haunted with questions about what happened to those two people who were watching

Oh yeah, that was great. Goddess of amazing entrances or the like - though we saw the real one later on. ^.^ In retrospect, I feel like that made sense too, with humans being a footnote that she hadn't even expected to be there.

Though I do wonder about them too.

Maybe they were worshippers.

QUESTION 2. After a 1200 year slumber, the Goddess Eridu finds the world quite different. Besides people being on her island, what else do you think will be a culture shock for Eridu? Do you think she’ll be able to adjust to all the changes, or will she refuse to accept them and continue to try to return the status quo? What do you think the other divine aspects have been up to over the years? Do you think more will be glad to see Eridu, like Ekka, or will more act like Amun and not care? Do you believe Eridu will manage to gain back her divine powers, or will something prevent her? Overall, how do you think this journey might change Eridu’s perspective on her divinity, on humans, or anything else? What will that change (or lack of change) mean for Eridu’s future actions?

I wonder if technology exists on a world where Gods/Goddesses are just wandering around.

depends on how we want to define technology. like for instance back when the world was young a loom would technically count as technology just cause it was a machine for advanced tasks.

im gonna laugh if eridu gets to a village and like theres electric lights everywhere. and she flips a light switch on and off wondering how humans came upon such magic and which god gave it to them

i feel regardless technology would advance

since if eridu can be considered a look into the average god/goddess than they probably mostly just ignore humans

Well, that's a fair point. I guess I feel like if you can just ask a god to turn on the lights, there's not much need to do the inventing.

I also kind of wonder if one of the divine aspects is what put Paradise to sleep in the first place. Like, maybe was in league with that Enki new God type.

Unless Enki turns out to be a posturing human that the divine aspect was using as a puppet or something.

this is also a large possibility. i considered that too. that whatever the island is it might not be representative of the world. honestly it could be argued the island has more old world values even cause theyre the only ones with a shrine left

but yeah the twist, i just wouldnt think itd be possible cause the divine aspects are like parts of herself. so itd be hard to imagine one getting powerful enough to oust her. but that is what would make a twist like that so interesting cause it seems so unlikely

i think as far as the aspects though were gonna meet more amun's than ekka's XD not necessarily as laid back as amun, but more like they moved on in life/got bored

Might not be old world values as much as it's just new gods have taken over everywhere and they haven't gotten around to dealing with the island yet.

I kinda thought about the parts of self thing... but isn't there a part of ourselves that we sometimes hate, and wish we could get rid of? And the Goddess doesn't seem like she'd be the nicest person to that part of herself, maybe. Though who knows, I may be way off.

I wonder if some of the others might also be asleep, or be serving other goddesses or something.

the impression im getting is theyre all in their inner sanctums. so cant exactly serve anyone if theyre stuck there. and i also doubt they would cause i dont get the impression they think eridu is dead

QUESTION 3. The largest mystery presented in the story is why Eridu slept for so long. Who do you think forced Eridu (and her spirit aspects) away from the physical plane? What do you think the reasons were? Was it someone trying to do away with Eridu, or was it for some larger, greater good purpose? Does whoever Enki is have something to do with it? Or is Enki just some innocent bystander who was mistakenly identified as the one who created Eridu’s island? What do you think will happen when Eridu finally runs into Enki? Also, considering Eridu was already forced away from the realm, do you believe this could easily happen to her again? What is stopping the culprit from banishing Eridu back?

QUESTION 4. Eridu’s arrival seems to coincide with several “coincidences” within the story. Why was the Dragon-God Kur also slumbering for at least 1000 years? Is it somehow related to Eridu, or was it for a separate reason? Why has Kur woken up early? Also, what is Ekka making for Kur that he even goes to the effort of sending Eridu to help get it? Further, we see a few other gods talking about Kur. Why is Shulsa seeking out Kur so desperately? What exactly could go “badly” that Zida leaves to prepare for it? Also, who is Daiard looking to settle a score with? Lastly, why do you think the priestess of Enki was conveniently near where Eridu crashed? Was that just a coincidence, or was she there for a related reason to Eridu?

Kur forgot to hit the snooze alarm. Or whatever the equivalent is. (Oh, maybe that's what they were bringing to him...) I'm also not sure what to make of the interlude. Does make it clear that there are other Gods around, the Priestess wasn't making things up or delusional or something.

Maybe Enki told the Priestess to go there because of all the vegetation.

Boyle column: Yep, I've been a bit stupid while hiking

When Karen Chávez gives you grief about your hiking behavior, you know you need to shape up.

Chávez is our outdoors writer and an experienced hiker. She’s also had the unpleasant task of writing about lost hikers, including Mitzie Sue “Susan” Clements, the Ohio woman who died in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park after going hiking with her daughter and getting separated Sept. 25.

Eight days later, Clements’ body was found 2 miles west of the Clingmans Dome parking area and three-quarters of a mile south of the Appalachian Trail. The cause of death was unknown late last week.

I related to Karen how my wife, Grace, and I had gone hiking out in Haywood County last weekend, venturing up to Purchase Knob. Now, it’s about impossible to get in trouble going up to the big house on the property, which is now an education center but formerly a private residence and hilltop land the owners donated to the park.

The 2-mile “trail” is their driveway. Seriously, it’s a gravel driveway, which is not exactly real hiking.

Where we got in trouble was in trying to some “real hiking” by making our way to Purchase Knob. A map at the education center showed the knob but stated, “Knob view grown in, trails unmaintained.”

We’ve done a fair amount of hiking in the mountains — not crazy long stuff, but a lot of healthy, 5-mile day hikes — so we thought, “How bad could it be?”

In the weeds, literally

The first part was not bad at all, as it was grass. That quickly gave way to a clearly visible trail but one strewn with rocks, sticks and even downed trees.

Then, about 15-20 minutes in, we hit a patch of shoulder high weeds, including a lot of delightful stinging nettle plants. If you haven’t had that pleasure while wearing shorts, it’s a real joy — and just what it sounds like: a plant that delivers a painful, irritating sting to bare skin.

We thrashed through a good 40-foot-long patch, and while I could still identify the trail ahead, Grace had lost her enthusiasm, not to mention her confidence in my outdoorsiness. Hey, she’s not wrong. I drink beer well outdoors, but Daniel Boone I am not.

Also, it was after 5 p.m. at this point, nobody else was on this trail, we had one bottle of water left between us, nothing to start a fire with and we were wearing light clothes.

In short, a cold beer in Waynesville was calling. So, we wisely aborted the mission and retraced our steps.

“Had you told anybody where you were going?” Chávez asked me first when I related this tale.

“Uh, no.”

A look of scorn mixed with sadness crossed her face.

“John Boyle, that was not smart.”

Indeed, it was not. We should’ve texted our kids or noted on Facebook where we were going and when we should finish up.

Chávez also chided me for us barreling through rocky, weed-covered terrain where a broken ankle or snake bite could’ve posed a major problem, especially on an unused trail. My wife and I are both 54 and in reasonable shape, but we’re not hard-core hikers.

I also had no decent map of the area, just a cellphone picture of the map at the education center.

We did have cellphones, but I don’t know if a signal is possible out there.

How to stay safe

In exchange for my lack of judgment, I assured Karen I would once again publish her safety tips for hikers, which we’ve had to run way too many times. I know it’s easy to think, “Oh, I’ll never need these. I know what I’m doing,” or, “I’m certainly not as dumb as John Boyle,” but trust me — they’re worth taking to heart.

They are: 

Don’t hike alone. You are safest with a group.

Leave your hiking plans with someone at home and check in frequently. Establish a time you will check in upon completion of your trip, as well as a procedure to follow if you fail to check in.

Be wary of strangers. Be friendly, but cautious. Don’t tell strangers about your plans. Avoid people who act suspiciously, seem hostile or are intoxicated.

Bring a map and compass and know how to use them (a decent topographical map is really helpful). The Great Smokies website also notes, “Do not rely on technology to save you. Cellphones do not work most places in the back country and GPS is sometimes unreliable.”

Carry a cellphone and a flashlight, even on a day hike, and carry a small first aid kit.

Bring extra food and water. The park recommends a minimum of 2 quarts per person per day, but better is 3-4 quarts per person. 

Bring extra layers of synthetic clothing. Avoid cotton, which doesn’t dry quickly and can lead to hypothermia when it’s wet.

Check the weather forecast and be prepared for quickly changing conditions.

Wear shoes or boots that provide good ankle support.

Generally, we’re fairly cautious hikers, and Grace is the queen of preparedness. On a positive note, I had brought along a small backpack, which included a first aid kit and a flashlight, and we were both wearing sturdy hiking books with good traction and ankle support.

But still, it’s smart to double up on the caution, and bring a decent flashlight (your cellphone will die sooner than you think), and a way to start a fire (some dryer lint, matches and a lighter will help). I’d also suggest bringing more water than you think you’ll drink, or some water purification tablets (available at hiking and outdoor supply stores, or online). We have also bought some of those foil Mylar rescue blankets, which come in a small packet and are really light.

We’ve gotten turned around before, or turned the wrong way on a trail where it seems impossible to get lost. Sooner than you think, everything starts looking the same, and then you realize you’re really not ready for a night in the woods.

Don’t judge

That’s why I really try not to judge people when these lost hikers stories arise, and they arise frequently.

In her excellent story on the Clements tragedy, Chávez noted that rescuers conduct about 100 search and rescue operations each year in the Smokies, the most visited park in the National Park Service, with 11.3 million visitors in 2017. Most rescues wrap up in a day.

Some end in tragedy.

The park notes that these factors often result in emergencies:

Failure to plan and prepare.

Inadequate footwear, clothing, or equipment.

Lack of skill or fitness level for type of terrain or outing.

Impaired or poor judgment, sometimes induced by fatigue, exhaustion, or hypothermia.

Failure to let family and/or friends know of your specific plans or route and date of return.

Failure to keep your hiking party together.

Significant hazards that you may have to contend with include stream and river crossings, precipitous cliffs and ledges, unstable sedimentary rock, dangerous wildlife, and ever-changing weather, including snowstorms and lightning.

Bring a map — and check it

I happen to sit next to reporter Mark Barrett, who’s what I’d consider an expert hiker, the kind who goes on multiday backpacking trips. He stressed all of the tips above, but also offered some really good common sense advice.

“One thing that’s really important is to check your map every so often,” Barrett said. “People don’t realize they’re lost until they’re lost.”

He said he also always brings extra clothing, even if he doesn’t think he’ll need it, a good topographical map, a first aid kit, a knife, food, and a flashlight with extra batteries.

In our case, Grace and I were lucky. Honestly, I didn’t think it ever got that hairy, and we were at least wise enough to realize it was time to throw in the towel. Grace, the voice of reason in our marriage for over two decades, begs to differ with my assessment.

In short, that potential view from the knob was not worth a bad fall or getting lost, or honestly, more encounters with the stinging nettle plants. We weren’t terribly smart, but we wised up at the right time.
