im re reasing all te h pjo books hoo and toa too im in teh middle of the lost hero and i read these books years ago ok i forgot half the things i didnt know quintus was daedulas or that they met haphaestus in teh book or that tyson and grover went on their own little quest together adn its slowly coming back and i just rmemebered. zeus had two kids with teh same woman in his greek and roman forms. i. i also haven't read son of neptune when i was reading the series for teh first time i decided to skip it because tower of nero was supposed to come out pretty soon and i had to coemplere hoo + toa in time to get to read tower of nero as it was released and i ended up finishing 3 hoo books and 4 toa ones before the release date anyway. in like. a month i inhaled those books and i am now i had gforgotten how much i liked them yes i'll admit it isnt the best tsorytelling but it gives me nostaligia the goo dkind and im just so. overwhelmed i lvoe these books if not for the storytelling for being the only thign getting me through being 11-14 i rememnr i used to curl up adn read them all day and then i wen tot pinrteret adn thus wwent on to become a pinterest tumblrina and then acn actual tumblrina wow

DCRC Week 4 Don Rosa. In week 6.

Okay so, life has been a struggle and I've generally been prioritizing other things BUT i do intend to catch up this week, starting with these two comics.

First of all I want to say how funny it is to me that he just like. casually Thinks to himself that yeah! The triplets are the sole recipients of my will! Sorry I'm just thinking in contrast to where it came up like. exclusively as a gag you know. Stories like this make me see the purpose in Gladstone as Donald's ideological foil, especially in situations Scrooge would care about such as these.

Scarabia: Kalim KALIM IS LIKE A CLOSE SECOND TO JAMIL IN TERMS OF FAVORITE and considering they're just two people i really have no other choice - kalim ;;; my beloved sunshine boy it's weird labeling you as least favorite scarabia character

Pomefiore: Rook rook is another level of UNHINGED omg i like seeing how others interpret him though, it's so funny amping up his stalkerish behavior, which is the thing that really puts me off about him but i do like that he sees the beauty in everything that's like the only redeeming quality i can think of for him hfdksjfldj

Ignihyde: Idia another instance of having no other choice because it's only two characters in the dorm 😭 the only reason i chose him here is because i disliked idia at first because of his ;;; tendencies in general but he's kinda grown on me recently especially after book 6

Diasomnia: Sebek i have ;;; mixed feelings about sebek tbh didn't like him at first but book 7 and interpretations of him had me thinking a bit differently i think i just like him in the context of the rest of the diasomnia cast ;;;

I think we’re reading May We Be Spared to Meet on Earth at roughly the same time and are currently at roughly the same parts. I just wanted to say I think that’s very cool of us 😌 Do you have any favorite letters so far?

You're right that is very cool of us! Let me just uhhh look through my notes...

So far my favorite letters have been Goodsir's letter to his dad which I reblogged from you, for the reasons in the post. Goodsir is so bluntly endearing, somehow. He seems very young. Oh I've just looked up how old Goodsir was when the expedition vanished and he was 28. Oh alright then. I'm emotional about this.

Other favorite letter so far was unexpectedly one of John Irving's, to his sister-in-law Catherine. This paragraph really hit me as like, a premonition of the upcoming disaster:

"I intended to write something to amuse you, but I find I cannot help being serious. Everything around me, and every duty I am engaged in, tend at present to make me so-- I mean all keep me so much alive the feeling of a long separation from those near and dear to me. Even in writing I am reminded that a terrible long pause of anxious suspense is before me, when I can only hope, without the prospect of tidings of good or ill. So, my dear Katie, do not blame me that you should have been, whilst reading the mass of scribbling, obliged to banish your usual smiles. I will write you yet again, so I shall not take a very formal farewell of you at this time. My most brotherly love to my dear Lewis. --Yours very affectionately, John Irving."

Irving also sent back to England a number of drawings. Several men did but Irving's seem to be the best of the ones included in the book. Also, of two skeletons returned to England at the time of the McClintock expedition, one of them was identified as Irving by the presence of a maths medal next to the body, which I find deeply endearing. This book has made me a big Irving fan, honestly. Didn't have any strong feelings about him before starting reading this and now I'm like ough... my guy.

My other observation so far is that it seems like Franklin was unfairly characterized in the show, as his letters so far paint a picture of a fairly cautious man.

It is Fitzjames who is the king of hubris.

There are multiple letters where the endnotes make note of how the things he is saying shows he does not have a good understanding of the Arctic and that's really interesting to me from the perspective of seeing show!Crozier and Fitzjames' relationship conflict early on as coming from a place of Crozier's experience vs Fitzjames' support of Franklin's dismissal of him, with the idea (I had always thought) being that Franklin thinks his feelings of optimism and belief God will see them through are substitutes for dealing with the material realities of that place. And like, no! Actually that should have been Fitzjames, going off these letters! But it makes sense from a character writing perspective. Foolish, foolish man. Excited to see how my opinion of this evolves as I continue to read.

Also, Fitzjames' aggressive confidence in repeatedly pestering John Barrow Jr. about whether he's gotten the position or not is honestly kind of inspiring in a "if this man from the 1840s can speak like he knows anything when he clearly doesn't I myself should step up game in these job interviews". There's one particular letter that absolutely floored me, and it was the 11th of February one:

"In case of Crozier's appointment I send you a letter to Beaufort asking him to try for Le Vesconte which pray send at once as soon as you know I am not to go-- if I am appointed tear it up-- .... Mind I am in confident expectations of the Second Ship in Franklin's expedition nothing else is worth having." [I have used italics where there were underlines]

Nothing else is worth having. Absolutely awful, vainglorious man. This has made me dearly want to write my own version of my headcanon first meeting of "Fitzjames puffs himself up, fails to impress Crozier, feels rejected about it and forms a grudge" because holy shit, he is actually so much worse than I already thought. Also because "nothing else is worth having" would be a banger title.

I do appreciate that Fitzjames seems to have been a man who is eager to lift other men up, as this is not the only time he makes suggestions to Barrow Jr. about appointments and promotions-- if he was obsessed with status for himself he was at least trying to lift his friends up, as well. Pity this doesn't extend to Crozier! Would have been a very different expedition if it did!

OUGH very cute indeed this is 100% canon in my mind.

In addition to reassurances from Anna, Don, Gilda, and Nat, Yuugo's words would keep them grounded with his steadfast conviction that Emma would pull through and Ray would return within three weeks, even with the latter happening and Emma still not having woken up yet.

The youngest were already so keen on being around him even before his turn around that I feel like it wouldn't take much convincing to get them on board with the first one.

Assuming Yuugo doesn't fix the cup he was sipping air from before this a second time, I wonder if he would automatically include it among his set-up or if the kids would notice and insist on setting another place to honor Dina and the rest of the group from Glory Bell. If the latter, Yuugo would surely be touched and be one of many instances where he can't stop himself from thinking a combination of just how good these kids are and how he's grateful he's alive to participate in this.

The older Grace Field kids wouldn't take much prompting to join either, with the exception of Gilda. She was ready to follow through on her threat to blow up the shelter after seeing Ray didn't return with them and Emma was in critical condition.

But once she understands the situation, she's quick to adapt so Emma's life can be saved.

Still, there's probably a bit of awkwardness once everything's calmed down. I love the thought of the younger kids pulling her into either the first or second one and her being a bit hesitant, but Yuugo, handling it with grace and without drawing much attention to why that might be, hands her a cup with a small but kind smile. She accepts it with a smile of her own.

Understandably, there's more focus on his relationships and dynamics with Emma and Ray, but I love whenever creators focus on his relationship with Don and Gilda considering the four of them maybe have…two or three months at the shelter with him and Lucas before they're killed compared to the rest of the kids who stay behind? Same with Zack and Violet.

(Mystic Code Book Chapter 7; the timeline's a little fuzzy on how much time they spend at the bunker between the East and West expeditions.)

Love a bunkerman getting to know and spend time with all his kids. Naturally, this extends to all of them participating in a tea party at some point. There's not enough cups from the set him and Lucas brought from Glory Bell, but if the shelter doesn't have any spare sets, they make due with what they have since it's not the type of cups that matter, but that they're all taking time to enjoy these little moments of happiness with one another in the new home and family they've made for themselves.

Other odd thoughts:

• I'm not sure whether it's funnier to have the kids teach Yuugo proper tea party etiquette or if he surprises them with his knowledge on the subject based on what he learned back at Glory Bell or what he read in some books in the bunker library. (Over the course of thirteen years, he might have come across something, but put the books down upon coming across those passages because at the time, it was too painful. Now he has a reason to go back and read them.) • Gillian would 110% be on board for pulling out all the stops for this and along with Pepe would be stepping up the dessert game. • Pepe would also have his own assortment of tea blends to share, along with Lucas and Paula. • We see Paula eating with the rest of the group in chapter 98

so the ritual of eating with Adam shown in the chapter 92 bonus sketch might have been left at Goldy Pond, but on some occasions where she seeks out a more quiet spot to enjoy her tea, Adam ends up accompanying her.

3. Who is more into taking showers/baths together? Who tries to make it relaxing and who tries to make it sexy time? i think belle is definitely more into it than adam. adam Enjoys it, don’t get me wrong, but he’s such an autistic loner boy (honorific) that i think he just enjoys having his alone time sometimes. which he does get most of the time, since belle is in general a way busier person than he is. it’s easier to find windows of time that he can take for himself. (that’s before they have kiddos, of course. it gets more challenging later on, lmao.) and for the second question, i’d say belle slightly more? but she also just likes to get in the bath with him to be with him. it’s not always a horny reason. sometimes they just sit in the bath and read their books in comfortable silence. (but belle, being an adhd queen, can definitely get more easily distracted by the handsome naked man across from her 😊) (not to say adam’s NEVER been distracted by the beautiful naked lady across from him, of course😏)

Who likes to put their fingers in the belt loops? oh adam’s always reaching for her hand. i feel like every time i write or just imagine a scene in which adam is walking up to her, he just instinctively laces a hand with hers as they greet one another. physical touch is one of his love languages !!!!! he’s happy to see her so he holds her hand to prove it!!!!!!!! as for grabbing the other’s butt, though, that’s all belle adjsjd. funnily enough i actually have a fic that’s from one of these silly prompts. the entire thing is her secretly putting her hands on his BEHIND at a BALL and he’s like WOMAN!!!! WE’RE IN PUBLIC!!!! blushing very much. it’s very silly :3 also i feel like they both put their arms around each other’s waists quite often. they slip into little side hugs so regularly. they’re so very clingy… 🤧 (and idk about belt loops. that’s too specific for me sjdksj. they’re more hands and waist people.)

OUGH!!! yeah you already know 😭 adam NEVER feels like he’s good enough for belle. he does not Understand why she loves him so much. he thinks she’s the most incredible woman to have ever walked the earth, and she chose HIM??

he also just feels so so guilty about how they met. like even though he’s grown so much and changed and very much apologized for who he was, he still can’t shake the feeling that she’s staying there out of pity or obligation. i have a really rough draft of a wip where they get into some heated argument about something else but the underlying truth is that adam just feels like everything negative that happens to her (in their royal court) is his fault. because he kept her here in the first place and now she’s stuck here. and she’s like ?????? because she could’ve left a million times by now!!!!! she had every out in the world, she had every excuse in the world to leave him, but she didn’t care about any of that! she loves him! and she CHOOSES to be with him! she CHOOSES to be his wife! every day!!!!! and she says something like “you need to forgive yourself for who you were. because if you don’t, it is going to break us.” and it’s so INTENSE because like. HE NEEDS TO FORGIVE HIMSELFFFF. or they’re just never gonna be able to move forward. and he works through it and does eventually, but he still always quietly basks in her magnificence and wonders how he got so lucky.

who’s more afraid of losing the other?? OUGH. i think they’re both really scared of losing the other. belle is more level-headed about it just because she’s more emotionally stable, lmao, but like. watching him die was Not something she very easily got over 🥲 she had nightmares and she still always clings to him so much when they sleep. she always rests her head on his chest just to listen to his heartbeat. it calms her so much. and OF COURSE adam is terrified of losing belle. his entire family has been so riddled with death, he almost expects he’ll lose her when they’re young. growing old with her is his greatest honor in life. and same goes for their kiddos too!! he worries SO much about his family because they’re just… truly the life he never thought he’d get to live. they’re his whole world 😭😭

and lastly for this one, who thinks they keep messing up !! agh. it’s both. but different ways. adam always thinks he’s messing up as a husband and a father. which is ironic because those are the jobs he is truly best at. (and belle says so in a toast for one of his birthdays. but i haven’t written anything beyond her little speech so. 🤫) but yeah i mean, it goes hand in hand. he never feels worthy enough for belle, so of course he thinks he falls short. but belle always reminds him that she’s happy, their children are happy, and they love being loved and protected by him.

i think — and gosh i’ll try not to tangent too much here, famous last words — i think that’s a big part of it too. the way his father abused him psychologically, was by telling him he was never man enough. too weak too quiet too scared. so adam, growing up, has just always had so many issues surrounding masculinity and what it means to be a man and all that. he’s never been very masculine but he never disliked being a boy/man either. he was who he was. but he had to mask so much of it, to the point of becoming just as ruthless and awful of a man as his father was. becoming a monster, even. so now that he’s all new, clean slate, he’s in this weird ambiguous state of being allowed to be himself but struggling to recall who “himself” is. and now he’s “husband” and now he’s “father” and he’s seen what those words have meant in the past but what do they mean now? what kind of husband does his wife need? what kind of father do his children need? and i don’t know. i think he just struggles with that. he doesn’t feel like he does a good job of being those roles, because maybe it’s not the way it typically is done. but he feels so protective of them all, so he lets that drive it, and he worries about them, and loves them, and cares for them when they’re sad and hurt. and that’s precisely who they need :”) he keeps all of them very grounded and secure <3

BELLE ON THE OTHER HAND!!!!! doesn’t super struggle being a wife or mama (no more than the average person, i mean) but she very much does always worry about her role as queen. she’s so Not Used To having ANY kind of power in her life, let alone RULING A COUNTRY, so it’s a very insane flip for her. but being who she is, she does jump right into it!! she dives head first into projects and changes and ideas and !!! she’s so full of ideas !!!! but the people of the court are snarky and rude and bitchy and it takes many of them a LONG time before they decide she’s “one of them”. she’s STILL an outsider. she’s STILL the weird one. no matter where she goes. she was too different for the villagers but she’s still too different for the aristocracy. so she struggles a lot with finding her place. and like, sure, she has the title, so Legally people DO respect her. but behind closed doors, within the court, gossip swirls and people are just awful. and she struggles to tell adam about it because she knows he’d take the blame for “bringing her into this life.” (which comes full circle back to the beginning of my answer to this question. how did i do that?? so powerful.)

anyway she DOES tell him things but it’s just always so hard. and she feels like such a failure sometimes. and they make her feel so crazy for having the ideas she has. and it just SUCKS. but adam is always so firmly in her corner, ALWAYS backing up her ideas when she presents them to councils and things (which is hard for her too, to accept his help. she’s just so stubbornly independent. they had a convo in my head the other day about adam offering to write to someone, to perhaps sway them in the right direction of belle’s idea, but she’s like no no i got it. and adam’s like “i know you do and /i/ know you’re capable of this, but a lot of these people don’t. and sometimes you need to speak their language in order to gain what you want.” and it’s just like UGJGJDKFJ!!!! it sucks how often they’ll disagree with her but then adam steps in and says he agrees/likes it and they’re like oh yeah nice totally!!! like. she may be queen but she is first and foremost a woman🫠.) anyway. belle struggling to be accepted/be herself is something i wanna grapple with more. and i do i think but. need to do it more. WHEW. okay, next question.

30. Who is embarrassed when they have to wear their glasses and who thinks they look super cute? HEHEHE that’s so cute. i have an old headcanon that adam gets reading glasses in his 40s (belle has like super powerful eyes and doesn’t need them til her 60s??? adam is very jealous) anyway adam Hates his glasses he thinks they look so STUPID. but then belle wraps her arms around him and calls him her sexy librarian and he rolls his eyes but also blushes SO MUCH >:3!!! she really does think he looks so good in them, which certainly boosts his confidence <3

barely posted about the books i read last month but here they are!

i did talk about murderbot & these letters end in tears, and i just finished blessings & y/n at the end of the month. i liked reading blessings back to back with these letters end in tears, but it did also kinda emphasize the issues i had with these letters.... blessings, unrestricted by the letter format, felt way more intimate & had the bonus of alternating povs which i really enjoyed. that being said both are decent reads that give some insight into lgbt lives in both cameroon and nigeria, and i appreciated them for that. they're also both debuts, so i'll be keeping an eye out for more from both authors in the future.

y/n was. Weird. there is no way for me to review this book so i just havent lmao. it's not rooted in reality, it's like one long fever dream, and i did actually enjoy the first half. the mc is pretentious and completely obsessed with a kpop idol which leads to her spiraling and writing really intense y/n fanfic about him (and ultimately stalking him to seoul after he retires from the band). but it is WEIRD!!! like. that synopsis does not really give you an idea of how bizarre this book is. unfortunately the second half really lost me, it dragged on for way too long and the pretentious writing, while amusing at first, just got exhausting to read. i didn't hate it but i didn't really like it, either... just a weird experience all around.

and finally. the spear cuts through water.... favorite read of the year so far, it's shot up to my current favorite book of all time. mr. jimenez..... this book is just. a masterclass in storytelling. there are about 3 different layers going on simultaneously, with the frame story, the inverted theatre performance, and then the story of keema and jun. and the restraint this author had..... there are so many little threads to this narrative that he holds on to for SO long, and i really enjoyed seeing this trust in the reader. so many books these days overexplain themselves or talk down to the reader, but this one really trusted us to be patient and to follow the story along with the "you" in the book. and the way everything slowly unravels and then weaves back together at the very end..... OUGH. chef's kiss. i cannot recommend this book enough. so so so good.

umm and that's all. i'm tandem reading thirst with audio & the physical book and also reading the fireborne blade to start off sapphic september. i have at least 6 books lined up to get thru so fingers crossed i manage it and maybe even more 🤞 next month we will be going into a full vampire lockdown for halloween so i'm excited for that >:)

okay so . a lot happens to betty,

starting with the pre-canon stuff from fionna and cake. before the mushroom war shes shown repeatively sacrificing for simon, they start officially dating when betty misses her bus for simon, they go on an expedition to find an ancient book and when they do she makes simon take all the credit for it. theres a scene with them sitting at the bus stop after with the song "everything in you" (written for the show) playing. lyrics im normal about

original show betty plotline now.; in the episode "betty", simon gets turned back human after getting too close to this wizard thing that steals magic (long story its not important right now). he makes a portal back to the past to say goodbye to betty, and she jumps through the portal. the crown doesnt work anymore and simon starts slowly dying so betty goes and just beats up the wizard thing to get the crown's magic back. this works and hes the ice king again. she then starts obsessively trying to cure his curse and keep him alive

she does a ritual with magic man (this other guy. all you need to know is hes magic and insane) to help him become the ruler of mars. finn and jake intervene and it goes all wrong and betty gets all of magic man's insanity and wizardry. and magic man is now normal man.

in "king's ransom" she takes ice king's crown and does Some modification to it. in "broke his crown" princess bubblegum and marceline go into the crown with virtual reality and find out betty put an ai of herself in the crown to fix the curse. the ai causes ice king to act Really weird like he just can not function. they destabilize the ai and everythings good now

in the elementals miniseries, she gets finn and jake to collect gems to power a spell to go back in time to stop the entire mushroom war. ice king stops this (albeit unintentionally) and accidentally zaps betty to mars.

in "temple of mars" we see her on mars, trying to get over her obsession with trying to cure simon's curse. she does not get over it

in "come along with me", the series finale, she does a ritual to summon golb (basically god). it works, ice king and betty (also finn hes not important right now though) end up getting eaten by golb. golb digests them and strips them down to their core forms (ice king -> simon, betty -> not insane anymore) and betty pushes them out of a hole in the side of golb. she uses the crown (which was originally a wish crown, it was cursed by the first wisher.) to wish to "be able to keep simon safe no matter what" (which is her deepest want since the crown only grants what the wisher wants most. shes so obsessed with her cringe ass husband...). she becomes golb.

back to fionna and cake: simon repeatively tries to go to golbetty (golb+betty) through a ritual and succeeds on the 3rd try. after some non-betty related things, golbetty talks to simon through a mental reliving of when simon stopped betty at the bus. he says he couldve tried more to support her like she supported him. he tries to go on the bus with her, stops and says "this isnt how it happened". im just gonna write the dialogue here it makes me . SO insane

B: "we made our choices. we couldve made better ones, but i dont have any regrets. you were a wonderful experience." S: "you were... everything."

UGHHH those 34 seconds make me so insane oh my godddd. the scene ends with simon saying his life isnt worth less than his friends' and symbolizes him getting better. god fionna and cake makes me so insane. simon and betty's relationship is so well written and makes me so normalcore

Finished book one of the Good Witch of the West today...! I had about 3 chapters left and I just read it all in one sitting... Go me! 30 pages! Grew on to me, more than the anime actually.

Lengthier in pacing compared to it all which I thought was a flaw. I usually like more episodic works and hate when the plot stays at one point for too long... BUT this makes it work. Such detailed descriptions, even if the characters remain in one spot and the plot drags they make sure the setting reflects the characters, and the kingdom is beautiful. I long to write as descriptively as this.

At times, I was ripped from descriptions to a telling of a character's emotions. Something I do sometimes. This book was reassuring bc I'd tell myself "Well I can't just say that. I have to show it." which is true sometimes, but this book taught me that it is okay to just say things instead of slaving over symbolism just to express something. I really liked the more in depth characters here, it never stayed on one's thoughts. Switched POVS which helped me understand side characters thoughts as well as the mains. How their thoughts contrasted and built up dramatic irony or even more a bond with some.

I loved the art work too... a given.

I have the second book as well. Need to get thru it. I reread the first chapter, then read the second. Currently on chapter 3. The sequel has my favorite arc in the show in it, so very excited... I will try to get thru it faster.

I'm a little proud to say I am reading more and faster. Getting thru 30 pages in a day used to be a chore for me. But I did that today and more. In total I read 64 pages. Partially thanks to the short chapter lengths... If this keeps up I can finally read some longer chaptered fics maybe?

After Good Witch of the West I think I'll try to read the rest of Sabikui Bisco... Then I bought Gideon the 9th... ough... Not sure I'm ready for that... So I'll either try that orrrrrrr try out reading Katanagatari as I really like the artwork for that LN... and Like GWotW, Kukui sings a song for it and I am heavily biased to media Haruka Shimotsuki does music for. Love her <3

HELLO. About those tags on my Frankenstein post..

What do I think about it?

Book? Second favorite book ever, plan to reread it soon and I adore it. The only book I prefer over Frankenstein is the count of Monte Cristo, which is another can of worms entirely.

I think Frankenstein is good and a must read for everyone. Obviously yes the story is good but the sheer amount of misinformation about it pisses me off so very much and that would be fixed if reading the book was mandatory for living /lh. There's two (main (don't worry about the rest)) versions, 1818 and 1831. 1831 is the more famous one, basically Shelley just made some minor edits to things she didn't like. Best (and biggest edit) is that she removed the incest.

Sorry I am going to talk about multiple versions of the story.

Musical? There's two, iirc. There's 'Frankenstein: a new musical' and 'young Frankenstein'. I have only listened to the former one because I am scared to learn what the latter is. All I know is that it uses a design for the monster that I hate, which is 97% of my reason for not listening to it.

The former is from 2008 and not very famous. The actors have absolutely AMAZING voices, like genuinely words cannot describe my love for Victor, the monster and Elizabeth's singing. The rest are good too, but it's those three that especially stick out to me.

It doesn't have a single bad song. Vibe wise, I'd say it's a bit like Jekyll and Hyde and Sweeney Todd. Lots of bangers but obviously only listen to it after reading the book. It's also a fairly faithful adaptation. There's only two major changes from the book and I like both of them.

Junji Ito manga adaptation? Ough. I'm only 50~ pages in so far but WOWZER it's amazing. Junjo Ito is the perfect mangaka for adapting Frankenstein. I was super excited to read it because I like some of Ito's other works so I'm very pleased that this one is good (so far (I've heard the entire thing is good though))

1931 movie? UGHH. I think it's good on its own. Completely divorced from the context of the book, it's good. Compared to the book though, absolutely dreadful.

Order you should consume them in?

1931 movie first so you can enjoy it properly, the actual book and then it doesn't matter if you do the musical or manga next. Also there's a 2004 two episode long mini series that I have not seen yet but supposedly it's a very good and faithful adaptation.

Would I recommend original language?

Idk. I've only read it in English but I'd imagine there's good French translations. It's one of the most famous books ever so there's absolutely a French fella who did an absolutely amazing and flawless translation. I'm sure there's also versions in English with updated more modern language but I think that classics should always be read in a version as close to the original as possible to preserve artistic intent.
