sharing some of grandma's recipes 🩷 she's OUR grandma now. she tends to give simple recipes for easy bases - add whatever you'd like to them!
recipes:
- chicken noodle soup
- chicken salsa soup
- sweet potato curry
- gumbo
- how to make rice
- homemade bread. peasant, flat, and fried
CHICKEN NOODLE SOUP
- buy roasted chicken. place in pot with water filled about halfway up chicken. leave to boil for 40min-hour [good for walking away and doing things. boiling it makes it super easy to get the bones out. you can also just pick the meat you want off if you're in a hurry)
- pick out bones / add boneless meat to pot with water or broth from store (as much broth as you want)
- 1tb bouillon, bay leaf [i double this for stronger flavor]
- any seasonings you want. my personal favs are creole or yellow curry. parsley is delicious as well and discourages bad breath >:]
- veggies: sliced carrots, celery, chopped onions
- bring to a boil for cooking then turn down heat, leave for 10 min
- noodles! any that you want. grandma's favorite are egg noodles. cook until noodles are desired texture
great granny made this for my gma served on top of mashed potatoes
makes multiple servings! good for easy leftovers
CHICKEN SALSA SOUP
- saute / fry chopped onion in butter. add 1 pint water and 1.5 cup salsa
- 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp chili powder, 1-2 tb bouillon, as much garlic as you want (i personally double this)
- when it starts boiling add 1-2 cups of corn (canned or frozen)
- add bite sized chicken. i always buy my chicken precooked bc i have anxiety about it LOL. cook for 5 minutes longer
serve with sour cream, chips, and cheese
SWEET POTATO CURRY
- fry 1 chopped onion and 1 chopped sweet potato together with butter
- add a little water (don't fully cover food) and cover to steam about 10 minutes
- buy bottle of red or green curry sauce. 3 tbs. or about half the bottle. curry paste or powder also works! use same amount and adjust as desired
- add 1 cup of water with 2 tsp bouillon
- i personally add some cooked shredded chicken and a bit of creole seasoning and parsley. not called for in recipe
- add coconut milk once potatos are fully cooked and soft
- low heat until desired temperature
served with rice and flat bread
COOPER FAMILY GUMBO
cook in a big pot
- 1 bag frozen okra. chopped or chop yourself. fry with small amount of oil until it stops being stringy. takes about 10 min depending on amount. add to pot after
- add chopped: onion, green pepper, celery (1 onion, 1 big pepper, 2 celery for base recipe. i do some spicy peppers as well. add more as desired)
- 1 24-32oz can of diced tomatoes
- 2tbs bouillion (i use veggie bouillion, meat kinds are good too) (grandma uses this for an easy roux replacement) (roux recipe: butter and flour in low to medium heated pan. mix until golden brown. add creole seasoning)
- about 1 qts of water (i personally love broth so i just fill until im satisfied) (i will also use 3 32oz containers of broth instead of water for flavor)
- season with parsley, 2 bay leaves, plenty of tonys creole seasoning (i also add curry powder, onion powder, garlic powder, and lemon black pepper) (creole is main soup seasoning for gumbo) (the brand is just Cooper Family preference)
- once veggies are soft add bite sized cooked chicken, sausage, shrimp (i don't usually include shrimp bc of texture. i use a cooked chicken from the store and just tear it up so it's stringy. creole or beef sausage is my favorite) (i recently found some dried shrimp at my store and added that, good replacement for texture issues)
serve over rice with bread. best breads are garlic french bread or flat bread. normal bread slices also work just fine
creole is a little spicy, so taste test for desired amount as you're adding
FOR RICE IF YOU DONT HAVE RICE COOKER:
- add 1 cup rice or more
- WASH! rinse rice in water, mix with hands, and drain multiple times until water is no longer milky colored (doesn't have to be 100% clear)
- fill water until it's a little above the rice. measure with finger, i usually do a little under the first knuckle
- cover pot and leave to cook on medium heat. if it starts to boil, immediately turn down heat to low.
- once all water is evaporated, add butter and salt! serve with whatever you'd like
for YELLOW rice add 1-2 tb butter and 1 tsp turmeric, throw in some fried onions if you're feeling fancy!
grandma liked adding 1-2 tb of ketchup and fried onions to plain cooked rice. said it gave it a great reddish color LMAO
HOMEMADE BREADS
PEASANT BREAD BASE RECIPE
- 2 cups of warm water
      - for rosemary bread add crushed rosemary at this part
      - add any seasonings you want or leave plain! either way is delicious
- 1 tbs yeast, 2 tbs sugar, 2 tbs salt
let rest until yeast is activated (looks sticky/foamy/expanded)
- add up to 4 cups of flour. mix each cup in as you pour, the dough will be sticky and can be mixed with a fork
- cover with cloth and leave it to rise. will double in size. i usually walked away to leave it for an hour, im not sure if it actually takes that long tho lmao
- preheat oven to 375
- get your baking bread bowl or pan and butter VERY well to prevent the dough from sticking. i tend to cover the dough and pan in butter. if you don't have an oven bread pan or whatever it's called (my gma called it a cereal bowl i DONT think that's correct hahahah), then a flat pan will work just fine! bowl is just for shape. gma divides bread into 2 loafs, i divide into rolls or flatten it for flatbread!
- cover again in rag and let dough rise a 2nd time before placing in oven
loaves take about 20 minutes, but just bake until bread is a golden brown :] grandma likes adding sesame seeds before putting bread in oven
recipe works for pretty much anything! pizza dough, loafs, rolls, flatbread
FLATBREAD
- follow peasant bread recipe up until the 1st rise of the dough
- butter or spray cookie sheet with oil, spread dough thin
- brush top with melted butter, sesame seeds, parsley, and parmesan cheese
- bake at 325 until golden brown
i personally add some sliced chery tomatoes, rosemary, cheese, and creole seasoning to top bread before placing in the oven. then more cheese directly after pulling it out.
FRY BREAD
- after 1st rise, divide and hand flatten dough into thin circles
- paint with melted butter and let rest for 5-10 minutes
- fill a pan about 1/3rd with oil, high or medium heat while dough is resting in butter
- cook in oil until crispy golden brown
delicious with curry or gumbo!

I'm the same guy but Freemind/Barmey food headcanons? (sorry)
dont be sorry i have these ready to go in my brain for a reason
Barmey food headcanons;
He's not that picky and will eat just about anything even if he doesn't enjoy it
Didn't know how to cook real food for a long time bc he never learned and didn't want to.
loves big sandwich.
Chips and random snacks are his favorite things to eat he'll eat doritos for 4 weeks straight as his only food if he wanted
Can eat an entire buffet by himself
By default everything freemind makes is his favorite things to eat
Likes Muffins. Even if they're dry and not that good he still enjoys them
Favorite breakfast is Crepes but only if they're made right (He hates crepes from ihop. he'll still eat them though)
has been eating like a college student since he was born
His favorite fast food joint is burger king
fave ice cream is any of them with as much syrup and crap on them as you can put in there
Will eat a snack in every situation. He could be in a room where they say to not eat or you'll die and he'll do it anyways
Only time he doesn't want to eat is if he's like REALLY REALLY fucking depressed. but that doesn't happen that often.
He could maybe forgive too many things if u give him something to eat directly after
Usually gets the same things off the menu but has no problem trying something else
Would eat any slice of pizza and doesn't care what's on it
Freemind food headcanons;
gets the same exact item off the menu every single time. He would have a full meltdown if his favorite item is taken off and would rather drive into a wall then try something new. this has ruined his day or week multiple times
terrible at knowing what he wants from restaurant menus. He will be stuck on two items bc he doesnt know what he would enjoy more (also he has a weird minor anxiety like "what if i choose x and i shouldve chosen z and now i've irreparably damaged my future). this can be avoided if Barmey is with him bc Barmey will go "choose that one" when he's struggling
He thinks burgers from fast food places are shit. he hates burger king. He will still eat carls jr n shit sometimes tho. not mcdonalds or burger king though
Favorite dessert is a specific creme brulee from a specific fancy place. His fave NORMAL dessert is pumpkin pie though
His favorite fast food place is KFC
He loves spicy shit. even if it hurts. he could eat carolina reapers for fun
Unbearable need to steal as many sugar packets as he can fit into his pockets. he WILL in fact eat them straight up
Favorite ice cream is Pistachio AND Banana, he has a hard time choosing which one is his fave fave
Favorite breakfast food is breakfast burritos. though he doesn't eat much breakfast
he tends to skip out on breakfast and very rarily he'll have chips for lunch. Depends on day/mood/year. He's got kind of an unhealthy relationship w/ food for a while but it gets better.
If he is at a restaurant and he finds hair in his food he's usually grossed out but he can still eat he'll just. section off that bit that had it in there but if he's having bad enough day he'll just leave. he wont even pay
Chronic chewer of random rubber. He is not against just straight up eating it too if it just happens to happen. counting this as a food thing
claims to not be a sweets guy but 99% of the snacks he eats is candy. fave is laffy taffy (banana)
Pizza order is exactly this (taken off dominos so i could visualize it better);
EXTRA tomato sauce, Bacon (NOT CANADIAN), Chicken, Pineapple, Mushroom, Red and green peppers, banana peppers, Jalapeno peppers, black Olives, Buffalo sauce (optional), if he doesn't get buffalo sauce he put sausage on it instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's the visualization (left is sauced right is with sausage instead) + Extra cheese. He will actually hurt you if u make fun of him for this order
He likes to organize the food on his plate from least desirable to best so he can eat his favorite part/food last.

Some recipe suggestions/tips from someone who hates cooking, doing dishes, and dealing with produce:
Ingredients I get in bulk/always have on hand:
corn tortillas (get the giant bag of them and stick it in the freezer, they make great snacks on their own, and you can put mish mash in there and call it a taco!)
Pasta/Lentils/Rice
Tomato sauce and paste
Canned/frozen veggies (I like beans, corn, potatos, and peas especially but to each their own. Chickpeas are usually pretty good too.)
canned refried beans
Ground meat (I buy in 1lb increments and stick in freezer for easy protein)
frozen chopped onions
diced garlic in water
spices (Garlic and onion powder, cumin, curry powder, paprika, cayenne, oregano, basil, rosemary, bouillon, etc)
condiments (soy sauce, sweet n sour sauce, mustard/ketchup, honey, peanut butter, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, etc)
Recipes:
Samosa filling
Boil potatos or heat up canned ones until hot and soft. Microwave frozen peas, corn, carrots (or whatever veggies u like) until not frozen, or used canned. Put some fennel seeds into a pan for a little while until toasty, then add some oil/ghee and dump in your veggies/taters, plus some onions and garlic. Mush with a spatula and add curry powder/cumin/paprika or other savory spice mix to taste and cook until it smells/tastes good. Put in a tortilla/pita with some sweet n sour sauce if u want.
Lentil/Chickpea mishmash
Boil lentils until soft and the skins are kinda peeling, drain. Add to pan w canned chickpeas. Add some broth or water, just enough not to burn. Add savory spices, stir until chickpeas are softened. Optional: Cook garlic/diced onions in pan before adding lentils and chickpeas.
Soup
In a pot, cook some ground meat until browned, add some italian/savory spices. Dump in canned veggies, if using frozen then microwave first so it doesnt mess w cooking time too much. Season to taste. Add broth or water and buillon until desired soup consistency. Bring to a boil, then add short pasta noodles (like bowtie or fusili). Cook until pasta is almost done, then turn heat down and simmer and add spices until it tastes/smells good. You can freeze portions for later too.
Homemade pasta sauce
Storebought is expensive so: diced onions in a pan until soft. Add garlic, then tomato sauce (enough to coat amount of pasta u want). Add some tomato paste and italian seasonings (oregano, basil), then cook until it doesn't taste like raw tomato. Salt to taste. (Optional: cook ground meat until browned with the onions. if cooking from frozen wait to add the onions until meat is halfway cooked.) Boil ur pasta, then drain mostly (leave a little water) and pour pasta into the pan ur cooking the sauce in. stir to coat pasta.
Smashed cucumber salad
look up a recipe, there's a thousand out there, but usually i just cut up persian cucumbers, pour some vinegar/soy sauce/sesame seeds/chili flakes on there and boom
Peanut cucumber salad
Peel and slice american cucumbers, put in bowl with a lid. Add halved cherry tomatoes and peanuts. Add balsamic vinegar, olive oil, peanut butter/peanut sauce. put lid on, shake vigorously. If u dont have lid, then combine sauce ingredients separately and whisk to emulsify before adding to salad.
Also quick and great: Bean and cheese burritos, peanut butter sandwiches, eggs, caprese salad.
Thanks so much! There's definitely a couple in here I could fuck with, and yeah having more canned stuff sounds like a good idea. Not as good as fresh obviously but better than fast food right? Also, truly wish I could eat refried beans without shitting myself to death afterwards lmao that and chalula or tapatillo is why almost every mexican dish makes my intestines radioactive

tracked u down bc i can't just. leave this comment in the open on ao3. sweetie. that's not how tomatoes work. /o\ you're thinking of apples or maybe persimmons. the whole core of a tomato would be 75% of the size of the fruit. that's not a scrap. the outer layer is not going to be that much softer than the core. and if it's a hard woody core from being heat-stressed or certain varieties - no one can eat that core. it's a piece of wood. he'd leave a stem behind - and again, nobody eats the green stem.
i could be wrong because there are hundreds of varieties of tomatoes but still if he *is* eating a tomato that size ratio? for certain that boy has an entire front shirt covered in tomato juice - i dont care how good of a ninja he is, unless it's some kind of uchiha magic. sasuke could murder someone and have less red juice on him. no one eats the large 'steak' tomatoes or the sauce-making ones whole in their hands. they slice them first. on a plate or a slab or a board. usually some oil or dressing on it, or even a pinch of salt. and they eat the core. the cherry varieties are eaten whole, like popcorn, and they do not have large cores.
and slices imply a very, very sharp knife. nobody knows how ninja wire works but even if that does - even if a jutsu does - mikoto would slice it like normal with an actual kitchen knife. if sasuke shows up with sliced tomatoes itachi will be looking for the blade. unless of course the uchiha have a tomato-slicing jutsu.
your best bet for what you want to accomplish is a bunch of cherry tomatoes and leaving their branching stems. i'm sorry about losing your apple metaphor but tomatoes are simply not apples.
i know this is a typo but there's a reason why i can't pass this over. none of your commenters is saying anything. and there's a percentage of them who *don't* get any fresh fruit _who'll believe you_. with the rates of poverty worldwide that's not a reach. are you kids eating your vegetables
Okay, so, first of all: it's absolutely wild you tracked me down on tumblr over a tomato. Did I ever even mention having a tumblr? Insane.
Second of all: I regularly eat tomatoes like apples. Not the big steak tomatoes (although if I could get them where I live I would probably eat them too), just normal globe tomatoes. They are delicious. I do not not need to augment them with anything. Since Sasuke's favorite food is known to be tomatoes, I figured that'd be a fun little quirk to add.
Third of all: yes, I probably could have worded it better but it was a crack fic i wrote in like an hour. By 'tough inner core' (or whatever my exact wordage was), I meant the tough, kind of weirdly stringy columella (and placenta, maybe), which is my least favorite part of a tomato because of it's difference in texture. Having eaten a tomato out of my hand (without making a mess) in exactly this way, i know from personal experience that what's left behind very much resembles what's left behind when someone else eats an apple.
I used the apple metaphor for the tomato because it was an apt way to describe it, it was funny, and it was a way to put a piece of myself into the story without making it terribly, horribly obvious. Also i just don't really like cherry tomatos. Too sweet.

I have my family over! We're busy cooking andcatching up, then plan on going on a walk in the evening because it just rained and everything smells so fresh. I'm half tempted to take them through the creepy tunnel to the village. Lol but the payoff is a convenience store with a vending machine that sells local stuff. Walnut yogurt drinks, peach milk soda, barley and cassia tea, and my mom's favorite, a sweet tomato-milk drink. It sounds weird, but it honestly tastes like a cold tomato bisque soup. It's just very salty though. I prefer the cold cucumber soup.
We already hear fireworks down the mountain near the reservation. The towns below are starting early and I'm so glad I bought all the food we needed a few nights ago, because we avoid down the mountain for the next two days. The traffic and other hazards are a nightmare to navigate, especially in Rio Rancho, Albuquerque, and Santa fe. And the majority of village via the tunnel will be closed on the 4th, with exception to the gas station and medical clinic. Also it's very easy to accidentally hit a wild animal on the road because they're fleeing the noise and activity. So we sit tight til everything cools off.
We don't celebrate the 4th like what a typical American family will do. There is no big party, alcohol (none of my family drinks), loud music, a ton of people over, or the TV blaring. We don't even watch football, none of us have ever cared for it. Yeah, I know, that's blasphemous in American culture, but it's the truth. I just don't care.
Our holiday celebrations are not really focused on the holiday itself. In reality, it's just an excuse to get together. Well even use holidays we dont even believe in to get that day off. We'd visit each other more if we lived close by, but my duties keep me here and my mother has obligations down south. So we use any holiday as a kind of family reunion. It usually consists of cooking food and catching up, and the environment is very chill, so much so we sometimes take a little stroll to the creek or a drive up the mountain.
What my family does celebrate more seriously is the seasons. We pay attention to the changes around us. The first green of spring, the rains, the sound of cicadas, the seasonal crops, the turning of the leaves. We observe a lot of the solstices and equinoxes, as well as celestial events. A solar eclipse is a big thing to my mom, and a lunar one is special to me. My brother loves astronomy and keeps us updated on all things space related. We plan whole get togethers based on meteors showers and super moons throughout the year.
Celebrating this way is less hectic as well, because everything is gradual. My seasonal decor isn't just a one week or one day thing. My decor changes slowly with the seasonal flowers and animals I'll see in my area. So there's no hassle of taking down things once the holiday week ends. Also, less consumerism. I've reused my decor for years and add one or two new things every few years. I love my little wooden forest animal set, because I can dress them up for any season. They can stay up year round this way. Candles can be used year round, only their scents getting rotated. Tea and incense get rotated by season too. There is a personal ritual to it that I enjoy and it's not centered on one particular day, but based on the subtle cues of seasonal changes. So I never get stressed out by a deadline for a particular holiday. I have weeks to celebrate a particular season.
To give an example of what seasonal celebration is in my household, here's some of examples:
Spring is watching the world wake up, dirt on my hands planting seeds indoors, the sweet cold smell of thawing frost in the early morning on the pines, the burning of resin incense, a calm thankful spirit, the sound of a kettle, sweet grass burning, feeding birds. Fresh pickles and drying slices of orange and lemon in garlands.
Summer means the sound of wind chimes, iced sun tea, finding tiny golden shells in the streams, the sound of frogs, bug catching at night, and whispering scary stories during heavy rain with candles. It's hot spicy foods, eating outside, watching the moon, the smell of henna on my hands and feet after my mother decorated me with symbols of protection because she loves me.
Autumn is the smell of a bonfire, burning leaves, roasting sweet potatoes in the embers, drying meat for jerky, and the drying of seasonal fruits of elderberry and persimmon. Canning the harvest, dipping candles, mulching my garden, hanging herbs all over my room and kitchen. Long walks under the shimmering aspens.
Winter is filled with sounds of a crackling fire, the sound of wind, lighting lanterns with the community, the smell of dried herbs on my hands as I restock my inventory, a hot mug of tea, the sweet scent of beeswax candles burning, the taste of orange and fig cider, and getting up at 2am to watch the last brilliant meteor shower of the year.

Today’s pointless fun fact about Bunni! I’m 74 inches tall and apparantly I attract coincidences like flies
You see, I havent ever measured my height since I was in high school, and I’ve just been saying ‘i think i remember it was something like 5′7″‘ cos 74 is my favourite number and I know I’m not 4 foot. But I just had the random impulse to measure myself with a tape measure and apparantly i’m literally 74 inches OKAY WTF Also apparantly in feet that means I’m 6′1″??? EXCUSE ME tfw u accidentally tall
I mean seriously ive never measured my height in like ever, i had no idea! It was like when i was 15 that some random doctor measured it last and i couldnt remember it cos it was never important to me. I always assumed my estimate of 5′7″ was taller than I actually am, I’ve always considered myself completely average height. I knew I was taller than all of my high school friends but i just thought they were short, lol! I mean, i suppose since a lot of them were cis men then I should have realized I was tall by cis woman standards. *shrug* But there were always people my age who were way taller than me so I never considered myself tall. I guess I was like ‘if im not THE TALLEST then I cant be tall at all’. I am medium tall! Yay! I am taller than average but not super tall! Thats good, i wouldnt wanna aim for anything higher cos I dont wanna draw any more attention to myself than I already do with my appearance, lol. Not that you can choose how tall you are tho, i mean it sucks that you can just be born looking ‘weird’ in some way and you have no way to change that. I dunno why height is even classed as a ‘weird’ thing, and stuff like having glasses is ‘weird’ and just... wtf they dont affect anyone why is it a big deal. But still I’m weirdly cheered up to know I was wrong about something, I guess? Even though I didnt want to be tall?? Its just an interesting surprise to know something I assumed for ages was actually wrong and all I had to do was check. Opens my mind to think that maybe other things I think are unchangeable are perhaps not, yknow? As a depressed person I think thats a good thing to remember. I guess I’m lucky I’m a weirdo who gets easily impressed by really random things, its the best remedy for anxiety disorders XD
Anyway im a bit hyperactive and also tired so this post probably makes no sense aaaa ive had too much sugar and pizza and they had this new meatballs soup thing at dominos too??? ive eaten way too much i think im gonna puke but also I’m ENERGY OVERDOSE AAAAA bunni should not be allowed to order pizza! but like let me waste my money on a good meal once a month yo also it was my friend’s birthday earlier this week and I was SO HAPPY that i was able to afford a £40 present for like.. the first year ever! hope that makes up for me being one day late cos of my shitty sense of telling the time omg ITS BEEN A REALLY GOOD WEEK i really love and appreciate my friends and apparantly I’m tall I’m so confused by life right now how can i be tall i thought all my body mass was wasted on becoming fat instead Lol no wonder everyone stares at me in the street if I’m both tall AND fat. and like.. i have blue hair. this actually makes me feel better now, they aint judging me I’m just a natural attention-hog and i cant control it. I FEEL BAD FOR THAT THO! I should try harder to be boring but i did that thru all of high school and i was really looking forward to dyeing my hair aaaa why am i getting sad now man im drunk on pizza WHEN U DONT EAT TH PIZZA OFTEN TH PIZZA IS REALLY TH GOOD also i dont get enough sleepe have a gud day everrybody i think im gonna take a pizza nap even tho its like midday

☕️ vegetables
VERY good tbh I usually prefer the veggies in my food more than the meat.
Onions- absolutely always loving these bad boys. Enough to sob through cutting them lmfao
Tomatoes- okay I hated tomatoes when I was little but my thing is that I generally only like them cooked. I still like BLT and tomato on my burger, but like I have to be in a mood to have them cold any other time. Most of my favorite foods have tomatoes as a base. They compliment a wide variety of flavors.
Corn- very cool, very cool. On the cob that shit will wrecks my gums but we still love it bc it's yummy especially slathered in butter. Mm.
Carrots: UGH so versatile. I like them raw with onion dip the best <3 tbh dip in general, a lot of dips just work out best with baby carrots.
Idk if they're a veggie but I LOVE water chestnuts what the fuck. They just soak up all the good flavors of your stir fry and stuff.
Spinach: sometimes I feel compelled to eat it raw idk what's wrong with me. Refreshing.
Cabbage: okay so like. Accidentally bought this bad boy instead of lettuce (for blt) and I was like what the fuck do I make with cabbage??? Well now its main part of my favorite recipe that I just pulled out of my ass. We love cabbage.
Eggplant: very cool but you gotta be in the mood. Good for veggie stacking recipes like ratatouille. (Yes I've made actual ratatouille. It's very good but labour intensive with cutting phhft)
SQUASH IS VERY EPIC I LOVE ACORN SQUASH ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY IN FALL AUGGGGH also yellow squash goes great with steak! I personally dont like steak much so it kinda balances stuff out!
ZUCCHINI IS THE S H I T I love it so much. I love it especially in lasagna!!!!! My mom can't do like regular noodles so we did it with zucchini noodles that we sliced up- literally 5000000× better than regular lasagna with noodles. Also healthier if you are like, obsessed with carbs (bc they're good.) I also put it in my spaghetti in little chunks in the sauce! They just hold sauce so well.
Broccoli: okay. It's good... but I do have to say it does get boring fast. Pairs great in cheese based dishes.
Brussel sprouts: LOVE THESE LITTLE DUDES WITH BUTTER AND CHEESE.
Bell peppers: versatile kings. And queens. These are actually sexed lol! I prefer yellow ones bc I think they just add nice color into a dish which just looks yummier and feels better if you have a lot of red and green in your diet.
Potatoes- good. Good. sWEET POTATOES are where it is AT though. With butterbutterbutterbutt er buter butter and CINNAMON and CHEESE and BROWN SUGAR and sometimes sour cream. Some ppl like that... it's not my thing tho ^^; BUT AAA it's also good with my good friend cayenne pepper! And who doesn't love sweet tato fries? Goes great with most anything. Plus. They're cozy!
Celery: satanic. Choked on this stringy bitch. I choked on carrots too but that's okay we're cool with that bc it didnt feel like swallowing a gosh damn unraveling sweater
Mushrooms.... love the flavor, but the bite texture just messes with me. Still like them sauteed on a swiss cheese burger or just in soup though.
Peas.. peas are good but get boring plus they're hard to eat all of :/ I like split pea soup though
Asparagus is yummy when done right. I like the tops of them best bc they hold seasonings so well XD very good with chicken breast.
Cucumbers are meh. Good in salads tho.
Dont like Kale. Tastes like grass.
LOVE PUMPKIN. idk if it's a veggie but it's so yummy.
Beets are epic and I love that they stain stuff pink tbh. Very cool of them. This is one where I think just plain salt is good, the natural flavor of beets just go nice with salt. I eat them plain too I just think they have a rich flavor of their own.
And of course.... stitchface is the best veggie.

hi! would you be comfortable sharing what you eat on an average day since going vegan, or what some of your favorite vegan substitutes are? im almost completely vegetarian and i've tried going vegan, but i can't get over my craving for cheese!
of course!! I’ll put it under the cut bc this might get a lil long :))
for breakfast usually toast + sunflower spread/jam/marmalade/peanut butter/avocado or shreddies/weetabix and dairy free milk (i love soya and oat!)
lunch is usually just the leftovers from my dinner the night before or i make toasties with vegan cheese - I’m not sure where you’re from but in England most supermarkets have their own version! But the brand Violife is really good!! Most vegan cheeses you need to melt but once you have the texture is stringy and tastes just like normal cheese tbh (also violife is the brand Pizza Hut now uses for their vegan pizzas so you just  k n o w  it’s good)
for dinner it usually varies day to day and depends how much time I have/ if I’m cooking for my family but here’s some of the ones i make the most often:
Spaghetti hoops + toast
Tomato pasta w/ vegan sausages (+ garlic bread)
Veggie fajitas or fajitas w/ vegan chicken (+nachos)
Veggie cous cous (also good in wraps)
Veggie quinoa (also good in wraps)
Veggie stir fry w/ tofu
Quesadillas but swap chicken for tofu/vegan meat replica and add a lot of vegetables n ofc swap for vegan cheese (these are my fave to make by far)
Vegan beef burger
Vegan chicken burger
Vegetable burger (these are the best i think)
Bean burger (with any of the burgers usually just add some frozen veg n sweet potato fries on the side which are super cheap n filling)
Vegan pizza
Vegan roast dinner (vegan sausages + vegan gravy + veg + mash/roast potatoes)
if you have an aldi or iceland near you they seem to be the best for vegan substitutes which are cheap!
here’s some pics of a few substitutes I get from aldi:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
linda mccartney also does some amazing vegan/vegetarian things, especially sausages and they’re usually like £1/2 for 6 so you can use them for different meals
as for the craving cheese thing, I used to  l o v e  cheese and couldnt get enough but honestly just watching things on the dairy industry has completely put me off it n i dont want it anymore, especially when there are a ton of options, this is a really good video which is short but gives lots of info on it and definitely made me go completely off dairy, but I’d definitely check out violife because they have so many different types like blocks and slices and grated n it tastes amazing!
another documentary which is really good is what the health on netflix, its really eye opening!! I havent watched them yet because honestly im too scared too but dominion, earthlings and cowspiracy are all supposed to be really great vegan documentaries too
my food is all v simple because its mainly what i used to eat before just altered to make it vegan but there are some great instagram and twitter pages out there with recipes and advice which could be handy to look at!
okay summary for substitutes:
milk: soya/oat (but there’s a ton more out there like almond/cashew/rice etc)
cheese: Violife/supermarket’s own brand
eggs: (I was never a fan of eggs before I went vegan but you can make scrambled ones out of tofu/ use flaxseeds for baking apparently)
burgers: Vegan versions/bean/vegetable
chocolate: bourneville/any dark chocolate without milk tbh
ice cream: vegan magnums/vegan swedish glace
I’ll link some people I found super helpful when I was going vegan in case they can help you too :))
amyythevegan (twitter) + amyythevegan (insta)
accidentallyveganuk (insta)
veganrecipevideo (insta)
livekindlyco (insta)
vegandowndown (insta)
veganvideos (insta)
here’s my twitter too which I’ve started using as a platform for veganism n have retweeted stuff from people you might find it useful to follow too if you have an account
hopefully this has been kinda helpful and I hope it all goes well!! going vegan is hands down the best decision ive ever made so im sure you’ll love it too!

I’ll just slip into the moonlight (and catch a trail of stardust in your eyes)
JILY CHALLENGE | @prongsno vs @petalstofish disney + "but i would be so much happier with just you, i dont need the title or your money - though the elephant is pretty cool i must say" aladdin au read on AO3, wc: 8588, chapter 1 of 2
Lily Evans was not a thief, she only stole what she couldn’t afford. And she only took things that people wouldn’t generally miss.
One loaf of bread here, a tomato or apple there. With a simple and quick distraction, caused by Mary MacDonald - who was always one for the dramatics, Lily would be able to slip something up her sleeve unnoticed in less than seven seconds.
Mary was currently scavenging around the area for bits of scraps, hoping to find a few things to sell for the next day, which meant it was Lily’s turn to go through the markets, alone.
She loved to walk through the market streets in the mornings. The sweet scent of bread rose through the stalls and danced around in the wind. The spices, mixed with lemon and jasmine always managed to set her senses on fire. The market never slept, it was always full of life - no matter the time of day. But in the mornings, with the air a little cooler and the sun slowly rising in the pale blue sky, it felt as if there was magic all around her.
“No dawdling!” yells the apple vendor, ushering past her as he tends to a customer. He barges past rudely, knocking her into the table that’s to her left.
Lily scowls and, when she’s sure the vendor isn’t watching, slides an apple down her sleeve.
It’s then that something glimmers, and she stops dead in her tracks. It glows again, catching the light of the bronze pots in the sun, shining so bright she has to shield her eyes with her hand.
For a second she thinks it’s a trap, someone must have caught her stealing and now they’re ready to catch her. But the markets buzz by in the usual morning rush, nobody else seems to notice her. Everyone is oblivious around her, undeterred by the bright light that had blinded her for a second.
She scrambles through the crowds as calmly as she can, keeping her eyes set on the furthest corner.  She comes across a pile of broken junk; smashed pots and bowls, bent utensils and old children toys. But then she sees it - a small golden lamp, hidden away underneath a wooden train with one wheel and a flat teddy bear with no stuffing.
She gasps, pulling the lamp out of the pile as quickly and quietly as she can. It doesn’t seem broken - in fact it looks brand new. It’s so polished, she can make out her grubby face in the reflection, down to the soot mixed with grime that clings horribly to her hair. Around the edges lies an intricate pattern of delicate flowers, trailing along a path of thorns.
The more she stares, the more convinced she is that some of the flowers are moving, the petals breaking off the stems and falling down the lamp before they vanish in a puff.
She blinks, her fingers shaking as she brings the strange object closer to her face.
A crash in the marketplace, followed by the sound of smashed glass, makes her jump up. The lamp, all of a sudden, feels hot and heavy in her hands. She doesn’t know what on earth she has just found, but there’s no way she’s ready to part with such a unique item yet.
She slides it into her cloak, hugging it safely to her chest with her free arm. Then, with a slow and steady breath, she hurries back into the crowd. She gets the feeling that someone is watching her, her skin tingles and heart bangs anxiously against her chest. She lowers her head and keeps her eyes on the floor, careful not to draw herself too much attention.
It’s when she turns a corner that she realises someone is following her.
They’ve been tailing her for a while; she had first noticed the heavy footing not five minutes ago, but had quickly dismissed it as the crowds were still heaving with people. But they’re definitely following now, of that she’s certain. She quickens her pace and turns left instantly, hurrying down the busy street that’s full of the vendors selling hot foods.
Her body aches for her to stop but she rushes on, her legs burning. The food smells delicious - hot oats mixed with maples, pumpkins and chestnuts cooked in sweet saffron and sliced mangoes, served with hot coconut milk. It feels like she hasn’t eaten in months, and the markets make her dizzy with hunger.
A hand grabs her by the shoulder and, before she can manage a scream, pulls her into a quiet alleyway.
She notices her kidnapper in an instant - an old man with a long, white beard stares at her in amusement.
“Dumbledore?” Lily gasps. “How did you find me?”
The man brings a finger to his lips, and she finds herself holding her breath as he watches the crowds pass by suspiciously.
He eventually returns back to her side, but he keeps his voice hushed to an unnerving whisper.
“They can smell him.” His voice sends a shiver down her spine. “People from all over will be able to sense him - anywhere you go.” He speaks urgently and he continuously glances behind them. “You found him, didn’t you?”
Around them, the market stalls are loud with laughter and aimless chatter, and Lily has the horrible feeling something isn’t right. Dumbledore wasn’t the one following her at all.
Her hand shakes against the strange lamp, still hidden underneath her cloak.
“No,” she stammers. “I didn’t find anyone.”
He knows she’s not telling the truth - and she knows it. The way his eyes twinkle, a little too knowing, and his smile, that forces her to look anywhere but him.
“Curiosity,” the old man says, “is not necessarily a bad thing.” He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a gold coin, it shimmers in the sunlight for a second before he places it into her hand. “But you have to be careful.”
It warms instantly in her hand, and feels unusually heavy for such a small thing.
“I can’t take this,” Lily gasps, shaking her head. “We didn’t trade. I don’t have anything to give you-”
“Next time, Miss Evans.” Dumbledore says with a small smile. “I think you’ll be needing it more than me.”
A child laughs in the distance and Dumbledore looks up in a hurry.
“Did anyone see you?”
She shakes her head.
“Were you followed?”
Her heart skips a beat. “I…” She swallows, her throat burning. “Maybe? I don’t know.”
The old man seems disturbed and shakes his head, muttering quietly to himself.
“Dumbledore, what’s going on?”
“You can’t trust anyone! Not with what you just found, you have to keep it secret. Everyone will have heard it."
She opens her mouth, ready to ask what he means, when he hurries away down the alleyway - lost in the crowd in seconds.
The lamp feels heavier than ever, and it burns her hand as she takes it out of her cloak. It looks bigger, the flowers much larger than she noticed before. Something tickles in the atmosphere, a strange buzz. Her ears tingle and she blinks, unfocused.
It’s like the lamp is speaking to her. Whispering her name through the soft hum of the wind. Her hand shakes, but she inches her fingers forwards and hesitantly rubs her thumb against the trail of thorns and flowers.
Then the lamp glows, brighter and brighter and brighter until it’s so bright that she drops it in surprise, shielding her eyes.
Then she notices two things. The first is that she’s in an unfamiliar room. And the second, is that she’s not alone.
Before she can manage a scream, the stranger beats her to it. But he doesn’t scream out of fear, it’s excitement.
“I never thought I’d see the light of day again!” The stranger exhales, bending his knuckles and rolling his shoulders back. Bones and joints click and crack, like the strange boy has never moved before.
Lily stares, shocked. The boy looks to be around her age but he walks with his back hunched, like he needs a stick to lean on. Like he’s not stood straight in a long, long time. He stretches his back and, when there’s a click, finally straightens.
There are so many questions buzzing about in her head, her brain feels fuzzy. The world tilts around her, her head swaying as she tries to focus.
“Sorry about that,” the boy twitches his nose. “I forget sometimes that not everyone can apparate. I mean, jump from place to place.” He scratches his chin and gives her a funny sort of look. “We were being followed.”
It takes her a moment to notice the small bangle that’s wrapped around the boy’s left wrist. It’s the same deep gold colour as the lamp that lies by her feet. She picks it up, noticing how light it feels.
“Dumbledore,” she stammers, not letting the boy leave her sight. “He was talking about… he was talking about you, wasn’t he?”
The boy lets out a half shrug, surprisingly casual and complacent given the strange circumstances.
“What are you?” she asks. “Some sort of genie? A fairy?”
He laughs at that. “I’m a wizard, actually.” He clicks his fingers and the room is suddenly bright with candle light. “I never did like that name - genie. Wizard is more, well, fitting for me.”
“Is there a difference?”
“A wizard can do magic and a genie grants wishes. And I can do both.”
“Is that even possible?”
He nods his head and a flower shoots up from the ground, instantly blooming in front of her. “Anything is possible.”
He reaches out his hand and, now that she’s closer to him, she notices the strange bangle looks more like a handcuff. “I’m Sirius. Your personal wish granting wizard. For a limited time, anyways.”
“Lily. Nice to meet you.” His fingers are terribly callused, rough and hard against her own.
“Now, to business,” he says, bringing back his hands as he claps once.
Her clothes, once tattered and frayed, are now decorated with fine stitches and embroidery. Beautiful satin and lace, mixed with soft cotton. She feels like an empress.
“Do you have any wishes?” He leans back, suddenly sitting on a comfy looking armchair. With his legs crossed and his arms folded, he looks like he’s interviewing her for some kind of job. “Three, in fact. I never understood the meaning of three. But three it is.”
“You’re pulling my leg, right?”
He’s silent for a second, then his eyes wander to her feet. “I can assure you - I am not.” He waves his hand in her face, and she swats it away with a small laugh.
“You seriously grant wishes?”
“Well,” he shrugs. “There’s a bit more to it than that - there are a few terms and conditions. But I won’t bore you with the details.”
She wonders if that’s why he ended up in a strange golden lamp, but the boy seems too delighted and she can’t bare to ruin his mood with such a morbid question.
“Anything?”
“Within reason, I guess. What about gold? Wealth beyond imagination?” He turns into a banker, putting an enormous amount of cold coins on a tiny weighing scale that tips up at the immense weight.
“That’s very kind of you but-”
Sirius snaps his fingers, the money scale vanishing and in its place lies a castle in clouds. “Your own kingdom, perhaps?”
“Not really-”
Now there’s a small child with red hair, looking upset as she looks around the room. Lily feels her heart tighten, a strangled breath escaping from her burning lungs.
“What about a friend? You seem awfully lonely.”
“I have friends,” she replies, a little sharper than she intends. The girl looks up and vanishes in an instant.
“Okay,” she bites her lip, refusing to meet Sirius’s gaze. “I have a friend. But that doesn’t matter - we stick together. She’s like a sister.” Lily breathes in, scratching her nose. “Closer than a sister, in fact.”
“I didn’t mean to upset you,” Sirius apologises with a small shrug. “But I’m glad. It’s always nice to have someone you trust. I forgot what that was like.” He’s silent as he scratches his chin. “Keep your wishes for now. We’ve got all the time in the world.”
A bang from outside makes them both jump and Sirius runs to the window, looking out of it cautiously.
“Dumbledore said you were smelly.”
“I could probably do with a bath.” He laughs again as he turns back to her. “But that isn’t quite what he meant.”
“People can smell you ,” she says. “Smell your magic?”
He nods. “Y’know, some folk devote their entire lives to finding a genie. The idea of having that much power, it drives people nuts.” Sirius lets out a shudder, and Lily’s skin tingles. She can’t even imagine what it must have been like for him. “Let’s just say, there’s a pretty big price practically tattooed to my forehead.”
“So whoever it is… they know what you can do?”
“And what you can do. You have the key, right?”
Lily shakes her head. “I don’t have anything.”
Sirius flexes his hands and does a strange movement - like the twirling of his wrist, a flick once to the left. A red satin fez, vibrant and as bold as the sun, sits upon his head and his feet, which only a few seconds ago were bare and dainty looking, are now dressed in sturdy brown sandals.
“You must, how else would I be here?”
“Good timing? Luck?” She shrugs.
“I always did have perfect timing,” he grins. “But to unlock a genie you need a key. They vary in size and shape, but each key is unique solely to each genie. The key will get hot when it’s near the right lamp.”
The only thing in her pockets, apart from the stolen apple that she stares at guilty for a fleeting second, is the coin that Dumbledore had given to her just moments before.
“This?”
“That’s the one,” Sirius nods. “Looks shinier than when I last saw it. Dumbledore must have polished it.”
“But why did he give it to me?”
Sirius hesitates, he opens his mouth for a second and then snaps it shut. “He must have thought it’d be safer with you,” he says carefully after a few moments.
The air is tense and unsettled around them. But Sirius clears his throat, forcing a smile back on his face. He hums and a small pebble on the floor turns into a bed.
“I need to get back to my friend, she’ll think I’ve run off again.”
Sirius nods, blinks and a cloak, the shade of sand, falls into her hands. “You’ll be less noticeable with this, though I can’t guarantee it’ll shield you from everyone.”
The cloak is soft in her hands, like pure cotton. “Thanks. I’ll come back for you, soon.”
“No need,” he’s already made himself comfortable on the bed. A bookcase now stands near the wall, painted red and gold. “It’ll be safer if I come to you, that way this place and I stay hidden.” He gestures around the room and the wooden beams on the ceiling straighten and mend, now the dark blue shade of the night sky decorated with dozens of tiny stars.
“You just need to call my name, and I’ll be there. Ready to do what you will.”
Lily frowns. “I’m not going to order you around. You’re my friend, not my slave.”
Sirius is eating what looks like cake now and, when the word friend falls out of her mouth, he chokes once before looking at her like she’s the queen.
“I haven’t had a friend in years. You can’t take it back now, you’re stuck with me until…” he pauses, looking slightly uncomfortable for a second. “Until, well - until you get sick of me.”
“That won’t be any time soon,” she grins. “I feel bad, leaving you here though. Are you sure you’ll be okay?”
He’s back to scoffing cake again, his mouth too full to speak so he gives her a thumbs up instead.
“I’ll just make sure Mary - my friend - is okay and you can travel with us. We’ll get out of the city, somewhere safer.”
She clings the cloak tightly around her, shielding her face as she hurries out of the building. The market stalls aren’t too far away and so she turns right, away from the district, into the small town where the buildings are stacked high against each other.
Two lefts, a sharp right, forwards until she sees the red potted plant and then another left.
Their door is wedged open, broken and hanging off the seams.
There’s a faint hint of gas in the air as Lily kicks the door down, screaming out Mary’s name. The room is in ruins, the table and chairs toppled onto the floor, broken pots and pans everywhere.
Mary is nowhere to be seen.
The window is wide open and Lily dodges over the broken pieces of glass, leaning out of the window as much as she can. There’s no sign of her.
Her heart skips a beat.
“Sirius?” Lily calls out frantically. “Sirius!” The air tingles around her.
He appears suddenly, not like a puff of smoke but like the breaking of the sun through thick clouds, like he was there all along - she just didn’t notice him until now.
“Redecorating, are we?”
For a moment his humour calms her, but she gulps down the laughter like it’s acid in her throat.
“Mary’s gone. Someone’s been here, someone’s taken her.”
She spots a letter stapled to one of the toppled chairs, and rips it off.
“A life for a life. Give the genie and she may be spared.”
“May? How generous of them,”
“Please be serious,”
His lips flicker into a small smirk. “I am.”
The clock, hung on the wall with a scrap nail Mary once found in a pile of rubbish, chimes. It seems to be the only thing in the room to be fully functioning.
“How did they know we live here?”
“They’ve probably been watching everyone here very, very closely.” Sirius crumples the letter in his hand and drops it. “We’re not safe here, at all.”
This whole… situation is so strange for her. Lily Evans is a thief, she’s a nobody in this dreary town. She picked through rubbish piles and sold junk pieces to merchants. Her hands and nails were sore and dirty. And yet here she was, a strange boy who could do magic at her very command.
“I don’t get it though,” she says with a gulp. She’s tired, her body is aching and her mind is numb. “You’re so... valuable to these people - to, well, anyone who has you right?”
Sirius nods. “But?”
“But - you were in plain sight.” It’s rather strange, now that she comes to think of it. It’s unsettling, and despite the humidity in the air she’s shivering. “Next to broken toys and old pots. I don’t understand why they - whoever they are - didn’t just take you when they could? Why wait? Why wait for me to get to you first?”
Sirius is quiet for a moment, then he lets out an aggravated sigh and scratches his head.
“There’s a lot of politics involved. You don’t just need a key, there’s other things. It’s a little complex.” He taps his index finger on his lip, thinking hard.
“What, don’t think I’ll be able to understand?”
“On the contrary, you’re smarter than you give yourself credit.”
“Then tell me, you have to-”
“They’re here!” The door smashes open, completely breaking off the hinge and smashing even further.
She doesn’t manage to catch a glimpse of them; Sirius is already grabbing hold of her arm and then they’re spiralling, flying through the atmosphere until they stop. Her stomach flops up and down as she steadies on her feet, toppling onto the floor and landing onto a wet patch of grass.
“Sorry,” he says. “You get used to it after a while.”
“Where are we?” She marvels at the grass, threading her hands through the thin stems and curling it around her fingers. “It’s not rained in Cokeworth for months.”
“Godric’s Hollow,” Sirius says as he pulls her up. “I had to take us where we wouldn’t be followed.”
“I always wanted to come here,” she says, looking up at the sky with a small smile.
In Cokeworth you were lucky if you spotted a single, wispy, small cloud amongst the vast scorching blue sky. But here, in Godric’s Hollow, it was so different.
Everywhere she looked and turned there were clouds. All of them big, deep and grey. There was a thunderstorm coming. A distant echo of thunder, miles away, rumbles above her.
Cokeworth is so far away.
Mary is so far away.
“We have to go back.”
Sirius shakes his head, his eyes hard.
“We can’t.” He speaks slowly, like she’s a time bomb just waiting to explode and he’s expecting it at any second. He looks fearful, watching her so carefully.
She lets out a frustrated yell, pulling at his arm; she can feel the desperation clawing its way up her body.
“Mary’s back there, we need to find her!”
Lily kicks against him but Sirius holds her back.
“We will, we will - I promise.”
An invisible force, gentle but firm, pushes her back, a barricade blocking her from him.
“I promise, we will.”  He says again, louder this time.. “But they’ll be waiting for us and if we go back right now we’ll walk straight into their trap. We won’t be rescuing your friend, we’ll be in the same situation as her.”
She doesn’t move an inch, but curls her fingers into a fist. “I could just demand you take me there right now. Wish us there, right?”
Sirius lets out a shaky breath. “You could.” His movements are slow as he leans back against the nearest tree, legs slumped and marking the dirt. “It wouldn’t be very sensible, but… You could. Yeah. Will you?”
The thought dashes through her mind and the word burns against her tongue.
She could say the word right now, and Sirius would be forced to listen to her. Forced to obey her.
She could change everything in one second.
So why can’t she bring herself to?
Sirius watches her, fear in his eyes.
She can’t do that to him, it would make her no different than the people who had last locked him in the lamp.
How long had he been imprisoned for? Pressured into fulfilling selfish human ambition? How long had he been alone for? Wishing that someone could help him?
“No.” Somehow, she always knew that would be her answer and a peacefulness settles in her fingers. She feels the absence of the barricade, a gentle wind lulling her forwards. She puts a hand on his shoulder, hoping it speaks for her. She’s too ashamed to speak.
Sirius looks relieved, though he can’t meet her eyes. “Good. We’ll find a way to help her. We just need a plan.”
The ground underneath them shakes, and they only have a moment to look at each other before they’re suspended in mid-air, caught in a giant net.
“Not exactly what I had in mind,” Sirius says rather flatly. He grasps at the net, pulling the material tight around him. It’s no use - it’s as strong as steel.
“Tasty food!” A troll grins, poking out from behind the clutter of trees. It licks its lips hungrily and prods a grotesque looking finger into Sirius’s side.
“Oi!” Sirius huffs, looking rather repulsed. “Watch it!”
“It needs more meat,”
The troll pokes at Sirius again, and he falls backwards against the netting. His red hat topples off his head and tumbles through one of the gaps, despite Sirius all but lunging to the base of the net and flailing his arms about through the holes.
It’s no use, the hat plunges into a muddy puddle and the troll picks it up, fascinated.
“My hat!”
“Is it tasty?” A second troll asks, stomping over from a newly lit bonfire.
As the two trolls argue about if the hat has a flavour or not, Lily shifts nervously.
“I think,” she says with a little gulp. “I think we’re food .”
Sirius nods, grimacing as one of the trolls give his hat a precarious lick. “I have to agree with you there.”
“I’m sorry, okay? About what I said before-”
“It’s fine. You were upset. Friends?”
“You don’t even need to ask, you numpty.” The look on his face, the pure joy and relief is such a happy thing to behold. And for a second she almost forgets about the trolls underneath them, talking about how delicious they’ll be.
“Can you get us out of this?”
He shakes his head. “My normal magic won’t cut it, the net or this whole situation.”
“What do you mean?”
The troll obviously finds the taste of the fez revolting, it shudders and throws the hat into the fire.
Sirius lets out a sigh.
“I’m not really supposed to do any magic unless you wish it, I wasn’t even supposed to apparate us here without you wishing it. And I tried to just before, but this stupid thing-” He grasps tight of the net, shaking it violently as if just pure anger alone will break it. “It’s got some sort of magic charm on it. Essentially, my magic won’t work until we’re out of this.”
“So, I guess we’re food then.”
“Which one shall we have first?” The troll who threw Sirius’s fez into the fire asks. It prods Sirius again and then turns to Lily and does the same.
“The funny looking one,” the other troll replies.
“Good choice, I was thinking that one too.”
A shiver shoots down her spine. “Which one of us do you think they’re talking about?”
“You, obviously,” Sirius says with a grin. “I’m definitely not funny looking.”
The troll grins, steps forward and pulls out a very long, a very pointy knife. “We’ll cut off it’s legs first, the legs are the best bits.”
The knife swings forwards and Lily feels her heart plummet to an icy stop. Sirius sucks in a breath, clinging onto her hand so hard it feels numb.
A howl scatters through the nearby trees, and the troll drops the knife to the floor.
“What was that?”
The trees sway and a cat dashes from the bushes.
“It looks tasty!” The troll says gleefully. It steps towards the cat, but the cat - clearly irritated by the disturbance - trots off.
“I’ll go get it. A tasty dessert. Come here crunchy.” The troll stomps away and the remaining one picks up the knife.
“I don’t think your fire’s hot enough.” Sirius says in an instant.
The other troll frowns. “What? It’s fire.”
“I don’t know about my companion here,” he says with a nod towards Lily. “But - I know I’d taste ten times better once my skin is - um - crispy enough.”
The troll is silent for a moment and grunts. “True.”
Then it turns around and uses the knife to swing and hack at the trees, branches fall like an avalanche to the floor and the troll bends down, hurling them onto the bonfire with ease.
And then, as if the arrival of a large ginger cat hadn’t been weird enough, out from the shadows emerges a boy.
His sudden appearance doesn’t seem to shock the troll, unlike Sirius and Lily - who wave their hands and plead for help.
“More food!” is all the troll says with a happy grin, stepping over the mound of branches to reach for the boy.
“Sorry to disappoint,” the guy shrugs, reaching a hand over his back to draw a sword of his own. “But I’m not on the menu.”
The troll pauses for a second, eyes drawn cautiously to the sword the teen holds in his hands. It clambers forwards, hoping to catch the boy with its hands.
The boy’s feet are quick, he dodges the attack effortlessly and swings his weapon against the troll’s legs. The troll lets out a howl and brings up its injured knee, hopping backwards… straight into the pile of branches.
It howls out again, tangled in the branches and twigs. Then, it falls to the ground like a limp fish and the boy does a running jump, screaming out a manic war cry as he knocks the troll unconscious with a blow to the head.
Its eye roll back and its tongue slips out, hanging like a dirty, slimy snake as it falls.
“That, was AWESOME!” Sirius lets out a hoot and clambers over Lily, knocking her off her feet, to give the boy a high five.
“Please.” Lily grumbles, glaring at Sirius’s feet. “Can we just get out of this now?”
“Oh, sorry.” She hears movement, then the sound of rope being slowly cut into with a small blade.
The boy whistles as he slices through the ropes, like there’s not an unconscious troll a few inches away.
“I’m James, by the way.” James says happily.
“I’m Sirius, and this is Lily.”
“Are you two, like, together?”
Lily barks out a laugh. “Are we heck.”
“I’d rather be eaten by trolls, thank you.” Sirius replies.
“So you met by, what, coincidence?”
“Sort of,”
“You could say that,” They say at the same time.
It’s like they’re sitting around eating cucumber sandwiches and drinking sweet, pink lemonade. Lily rolls her eyes, though she can’t help the smile that follows after.
And, finally, the rope snaps. Then, the tree groans and the net comes crashing down onto the floor, smashing branches as it tumbles downwards.
She meets the ground with a thud, her face planted into the wet, muddy grass.
“That wasn’t so bad,” Sirius grins as he gets up off her back. At least he has the decency to give her a sheepish smile, then bends down and grabs her elbow, pulling her up.
“Yeah,” she says with a scowl. “A right walk in the park that was.”
She can feel grass in her mouth and she starts spitting it out, desperate to get the gross, earthy feeling off her tongue.  She stops when she feels two gazes almost piercing through her and turns around, grass dribbling down her chin.
“ What? ”
Sirius is trying his hardest not to laugh. He gestures to his own chin and she follows, wiping the lower part of her face with her sleeve.
“You’ve got - um - a toad in your hair.” The stranger, James, says.
Her hand flies to her hair, brushing out the slimy toad with her fingers. She turns around, and instantly mouths out a frantic, ‘ OH MY GOD ’ to herself.
She hadn’t been able to see him properly through the net - he was shockingly and annoyingly handsome. How does someone like him turn up, at random, in the woods and save her by man eating trolls?
Fate was having a right laugh. It was giving her too many hands for her to handle at the moment.
She bends, pushing the toad gently off her hand and onto the ground. She takes a moment to recollect herself, smooths her slimy hands down her pants and, after a few moments of cursing under her breath, turns around.
“So uh,” James lets out a little laugh as he brushes a hand through his hair. “This may sound a little awkward and random but - have you guys seen a cat around here?”
Lily feels her limbs freeze, and Sirius catches her gaze, eyes wide.
“A cat?” He coughs. “Why would a cat be out here?”
“We were going on an errand - of sorts - but I got hungry. And while I was distracted Algernon, he - my cat - ran off.” James is a mumbling mess, arms wild and open as he talks fast.
Sirius scratches his head. “Did we err see a cat…”
“I just hope there aren’t any more trolls about,” James says with a small sigh. “Trolls will eat anything.”
He gestures to the pile of logs, trying to change the subject and hide the fact that he’s very close to crying. “Anyways. I’ll just, um, grab some of these smaller branches, we need to move from here. It’s getting dark.”
She’s still frozen, too frightened to even think of the possibility. She had always wanted a cat. Sirius stares at the floor, scratching his ear absently.
“I wish Algernon comes back,” she says as casually as she can, trying to catch Sirius’s gaze.
“Yeah,” Sirius mumbles as he stares at a dandelion. “Me too.”
“Me three.” James sighs.
She kicks at Sirius’s foot and, when she finally has his attention, nods towards James.
“I wish Algernon comes back,” she says again, whispering.
“ Oh! ” Sirius’s lack of subtlety is astounding, but he manages to clear his throat and lowers his voice.
“Lily… are you - are you sure?”
She nods in an instant and shoots James another quick glance. “A hundred percent.”
Sirius looks a little worried. “It’s just… I should have mentioned it before. My terms and conditions. I can’t bring people, things back from the dead.” He clears his throat. “If the cat is… gone then it won’t work.”
“Try it anyways, you have to. Look at him .”
It’s like Algernon is James’s life line, because he is a complete mess without the ginger cat. He trips up countless times, dropping his branches everywhere so he has to start all over again.
Sirius nods his head and she holds in a breath, waiting.
Nothing happens.
The clouds are darker than ever, and the thunderstorm is so close Lily can almost taste the electricity in the air.
“I tried, I’m sorry. There’s nothing I can do.”
The two of them watch, wracked with guilt, as James continues to pick up bits of wood. When his hands are full he turns back, a little surprised he has an audience.
“Let’s go this way,” he says, nodding left. “There’s a cave nearby.”
“You want us to come with you?” Sirius asks a little suspiciously.
“Safety in numbers, right?” James shrugs. “Unless you’d rather stay here.”
It’s almost poetic how the heavens open at that moment, when James’s body begins to move lifelessly and Lily and Sirius follow after him, shame tormenting them into a horrible silence.
She’s never seen rain before, but she can’t bear to look up at the sky. If it was any other situation maybe she’d start dancing - but the dread she feels in her stomach is all too real, and the empty look in James’s eyes is a constant reminder that life is severely unfair.
Sirius trips up and falls face first into a puddle, and when he stands his hair falls like wet curtains down his cheeks.
The rain pelts down mercilessly and by the end of the walk they’re all soaking, shivering, hungry and low in spirits.
James spots the cave first, pointing down by the river where a small alcove drops into the ground. What’s unusual, however, is the strange bright orange light, like fire, shimmering out of the cave.
“Someone’s in there?” Lily asks, stopping so instantly that she bumps into James’s shoulder.
James shakes his head. “That’s impossible, no one knows about this cave apart from a few of King Fleamont’s most trusted allies.”
“And you are?”
“What?” James casts her a glance, his gaze weary as he meets her eyes.
She takes a deep breath. “One of ‘King Fleamont's Trusted Allies ’?”
He shrugs and takes out his sword. “I know some people, you could say.”
On Sirius’s count of three they all enter the cave, treading carefully in the hopes of catching the enemy unaware.
They expect a fight, but what they actually find is rather surprising. There, waiting on a fluffy cream rug, sits Algernon. The ginger cat is surrounded by food, and three chairs that are placed around a roaring (and somehow) contained fire.
James drops his sword in surprise, but Algernon is already running towards him and the boy throws his arms around his cat, scooping him up.
“What the heck is all of this?” James asks Algernon, who meows once and begins to purr.
“Indeed,” Lily bites, side eyeing Sirius.
Sirius is trying his hardest not to laugh, and he walks further into the cave to inspect the sizzling pot of food that is perched on a small table.
“Sausage anyone?”
“Do you think we should?” James’s stomach growls as soon as he asks the question.
“Why not?” Sirius asks, mouth full already from two sausages. He licks his fingers and lets out a satisfied hum as he does so.
“Because they’re not ours, we could be ambushed at any minute by whoever owns all of this.”
“Finders keepers,” Sirius shrugs, not bothered at all as he stuffs another sausage into his mouth.
“It does smell pretty good,” Lily admits, and when she grabs a handful James is following right behind her.
The food is hot, and it warms up their toes all the way up to their ears. The rain batters down outside, but the cave keeps the uncanny group of four safe and sound.
“You know the King of this land then?” Sirius asks once they’ve scoffed up all of the food and they’ve retired to the comfy looking chairs around the fireplace.
“King Fleamont,” James says. “I do.”
“Could he help us? Or anyone. We need a lift to Cokeworth.”
“ Cokeworth ? Why on earth would you want to go somewhere so dreary?”
“As if Godric’s Hollow is saintly, it’s raining buckets out there,” Lily says with a tight glare. James raises an eyebrow at her. “I’d rather see the sunshine and feel the heat of it on my back than none at all.”
“We get the sun,” James grumbles, embarrassed. He turns in his chair, turning his back away from them as he tries to get comfortable. “Just not as much.”
“Back to what I was saying,” Sirius says with a wave of his hand, though he’s clearly enjoying the back and forth banter. “Could someone get us into Cokeworth, unnoticed?”
“The King’s ill, poisoned. The entire court’s in disarray, I don’t think anyone would be able to help - even if they wanted to.”
His back is hunched, and Lily wishes dearly she could see his face.
“Poisoned?” she asks. “So who’s in charge? The Queen? A Princess? Prince?”
“The family’s being held in the Kingdom. Lord Voldemort is running all affairs.”
“By his own doing, I gather.” Sirius says darkly. “Selfish human ambition never ceases to amaze me.”
“What about you? Can’t you at least help us?”
“I’ve got my own set of troubles to worry about.”
The fire crackles and James seems to shrink even further into the chair. He doesn’t say anything else.
“You like him, don’t you?” Is the first thing Sirius asks, rather smugly, when James announces the next morning that he’s going to wash in the river.
She stops stroking Algernon immediately. “ No !” The cat gives her a haughty look before pattering out the cave.
“That blush on your cheeks says differently, love.”
Lily swats away Sirius’s poking hand. “I don’t know what you’re on about.”
“The sausages, fire, warm rugs and Algernon safe and sound? That was all you.” He folds his hands against his chest, rocking to and fro on his legs.
“It was you. I can’t do magic.”
“But, it was your wish.”
“And that matters?”
He nods. “On rare occasions. Passion and feeling can affect a wish so much that the result sort of,” Sirius gestures around the cave with a grin, giving Lily a sly wink. “well, intensifies.”
“So you’re saying-”
“You used your first wish for him, it’s quite obvious really.”
“I do not have a crush-”
“Algernon! Give that fish back or so help me.”
The cat in question lets out a yowl as it scurries back into the cave, a fish hanging from his mouth. James is by his tail, clothes messy like he threw them on in a hurry, his hair an erratic mess like he’s been blown about in a typhoon.
Lily blinks, taking him in. Water droplets drip down from his ears and splash down onto his white shirt like paint on a canvas.
“Cheeky git! That wasn’t for you.”
“I don’t think the cat cares,” Sirius regards Algernon with a snort, who sits down in the corner and eats the fish with his back to the rest of them.
“Guess not,” James glares at the cat and turns his handmade fishing rod in his hands. “Suppose I’ll have to go and catch some more. We can’t do anything on empty stomachs.”
He turns to leave and, when he does, Sirius throws one of the plump cushions at Lily’s face.
“What?”
“You’re staring, it’s embarrassing.”
“It’s just,” She sighs, tugging at a strand of her hair. “He’s got these eyes that just - and that hair! Wow. And - his smile ?”
Her cheeks are red as she mumbles, a bright and dreamy smile stretched on her lips.
“Could not agree with you more, what a pretty boy,”
“Don’t make fun of me.”
“I’m not! Just saying - if you’re planning on using a wish to woo him then it won’t work.” He’s picking at his nails when Lily turns to him. “I can’t make anyone fall in love.”
“I’m not asking you to. It’s not a crime to find someone attractive is it?”
“No,” he says with a smile. “It’s not.”
James manages to catch them all a fish eat, and they sit around the fire, waiting for it to cook. Algernon’s grooming himself rather contently and James gives him a gentle pat on the head as he turns the fish over.
“I wanted to apologise for what I said last night,” he says finally.
“About Cokeworth?”
“Not really, I still stand by that.” He laughs, giving her a smile that makes her heart flutter. “But I am sorry for belittling your problems, everyone has their own battle and I shouldn’t have shut you both down like that.”
“So you’ll help us?”
“Better than that - I’m coming with you.”
“Oh, that’s not really necessary-” Sirius starts.
“But before I make up my mind, I need to know why you’re so desperate to get to dreaded old Cokeworth.” The fish sizzles and they take one each. “ Unnoticed, I might add.”
“We’re going to save someone we love.”
“She loves, not me-” Sirius says quickly. “I’ve never even met her.”
“But you will love her. Mary is a darling.”
“If you say so,”
“So it’s a rescue mission?” James asks, grinning.
“Well, I guess so.”
“Then say no further, Lily. Count me in.” James says proudly. “I’ve always wanted to go on a rescue mission.”
“What’s changed your tune? You seemed pretty against it all last night.”
“There’s nothing for me here,” James tells Sirius, who leans back in his chair lazily. “My errand is hopeless and Godric’s Hollow is a lost cause. I need to leave here, as soon as possible.”
“But King Fleamont isn’t dead, the kingdom still has hope.”
James shakes his head. “Not for me it doesn’t.”
“What you’re asking for isn’t easy, boy.”
They had walked for hours, eventually stopping at a small village that was on the outskirts of the Hollow where James asked around for safe passage into Cokeworth.
“I can give you ten galleons.”
The man in front of them bites his lip. Soft brown hair, like caramel, falls into his eyes as he looks the three of them down. Algernon, who’s scooped up in James’s arms lets out a purr and the man looks slightly taken back by the sight of the giant cat.
“Okay. I’ll do it,” he says finally. “But you gotta do something else for me. The money is a deposit, if you’re that desperate to get out of Godric’s Hollow then you’re all going to do me a little favour.”
Lily squirms next to James. “What is it you want?”
The man reaches a hand into his inside pocket and Lily feels James tense next to her. He takes a deep breath, time seems to freeze around them. The man fumbles around in his pocket for a second until he pulls something out.
Sirius squints at what’s in his hands. “A rose? What do you want us to do with that? Plant it and start a garden?”
“I want you to give it to someone. A lady, called Andromeda.”
“That’s it?” Sirius raises an eyebrow.
The mans nods. “That’s it. You give this to her, and I’ll take you there.”
“Where can we find her?”
“Hogwarts Inn, ten minutes walk down that way. But one of you stays here, with me. Not being rude but - just in case, right?”
“Of course,” James says in an instant. “I’ll stay.”
“No, I will.” Sirius replies, picking Algernon up from James’s arms. “You’re from this place right? We need someone who knows their way around.”
“I don’t really know this area of Godric’s Hollow that well,” James with a nervous laugh. “I won’t be much use.”
“I thought you looked familiar,” The man says after a moment, and digs his finger into James’s shoulder. “Haven’t I seen you from somewhere before?”
“No, I don’t think so.”
The man doesn’t look convinced. “But you’re from here-”
“Yes but-”
“Then you can go, with your lady friend. We’ll wait here. Please, I’m not asking much.”
“What if she asks for your name?” Lily takes the rose with a smile.
The man shrugs, but a blush does creep onto his cheeks. “She’ll know who it’s from.”
“I don’t get why he couldn’t just give the stupid thing himself,” James grumbles five minutes later. He keeps his head down, staring at the ground when people pass by. The village is small, and only a handful of people are around.
“I think it’s romantic,” Lily says, sniffing the rose fondly. “He’s confessing his love.”
“By making someone else do it. That’s not love, that’s slothfulness.”
“I’m sure he had his reasons,” She grins and elbows his side.
He looks up in shock and she feels a strange tingling in her toes when he meets her gaze. He clears his throat and turns away, pointing to the inn that’s to their left.
The inn is small but beautifully decorated, with a cobbled thatched roof and dainty looking stained glass windows. The door creaks as James pulls it open and a woman, with wild, black hair, gives them a dirty look.
“We sell rooms for sleep, not pleasure. Go and do somewhere else.”
“We’re not-” James gasps, spluttering out as his ears tinge with red.
“We’re here to see Andromeda,” Lily says. She places what she hopes is a comforting hand on his shoulder, and gives him a small smile.
The lady sneers and stomps away. The entrance to the inn is deathly quiet, but there’s singing and laughter in the next room so loud that it feels like they’re in the centre of it all. The lady comes back after a minute with what looks like her sister.
“I’m Andromeda,” The sister says. Her hair is less wild, soft looking curls fall down to her shoulders. She gives them a kind smile as the other sister gives them a glare before stalking away.
“Sorry about Bella,” Andromeda says with a sigh. “She’s hated these coronation parties.”
“Coronation?” James asks, craning his neck to look into the room. His eyes are panicked at the word, and he wipes his hands onto his trousers.
Andromeda nods, looking at him carefully for a second before turning back to Lily. “The King is dying and, with the prince in prison, the title passes on to Lord Voldemort.”
“On whose authority? That’s treason!”
“James! Calm down!” She has to grab at his arm, pulling him back. He’s breathing deeply, fingers curled around her wrist so tightly it stings.
“Voldemort cannot rule,” his voice is shaking with anger but he whispers the words, his breath fluttering hot on her skin.
“We’re leaving, we’re leaving Godric’s Hollow - remember? You’ll be gone.”
He stares desperately into her eyes for a moment, his body still shaking desperately. He only gives her a quick nod, and swallows slowly before taking his hand off her. Her wrist is red, swollen.
“I’m so sorry, your wrist-”
“We were told to give you this.”
Andromeda sighs as she takes the rose.
“Oh, Teddy,” she smiles. “Thank you, for this. Please, tell him: ten o’clock. He’ll know what I mean.”
They walk back in silence, James kicking at stones moodily behind her.
“What’s gotten into you?” When one of the stones flies at her and hits her back she turns around with a glare. “You’re going to be leaving, isn’t that what you wanted?”
He shakes his head. “You wouldn’t understand,”
“Then just talk to me! Help me to understand.”
His face is dark like thunder as he tries to blink away angry tears. But suddenly he grabs hold of her hand, pulling her behind the nearest trees.
“Don’t,” he says softly, pleading as he puts a finger to her lips.
There’s a group of five soldiers walking down the main pathway, clad in the royal crest, holding swords as they inspect passersby.
“Please, just stay quiet.” His face is so close to hers, he only needs to breathe out the words for her to hear him.
She nods, and his hands settle on her shoulders.
Her weight is pushed into him, and his into the tree, and they stay in silence for what feels like an eternity.
It doesn’t feel too bad - staring into his eyes, picking out the different shades of greens and browns that make up the beautiful hazel colour. She can’t pinpoint what it is, but there’s something about him. Like she could trust him with anything.
Finally he moves, dropping his hands off her shoulders as he takes a step back. “They’re gone, let’s go. Quick - before they come back.”
Sirius, Algernon and Teddy are waiting when James and Lily return.
“Well?” Teddy asks, crossing his fingers.
“She said ten o’clock ; she said you’d know what that means.”
“Aye, that I do.” Teddy smiles in relief, shaking Lily’s hand energetically. “Hagrid is waiting down the lane for you all with the carriage. You can’t miss him. It’s a three days ride, if you don’t want no trouble. Now excuse me - I’ve got my wedding to sort out.”
True to Teddy’s word, Hagrid waits for them. The man was right, you couldn’t miss him - for Hagrid was actually a half giant, standing tall at 8 foot 8.
“Don’t let me height scare ya, and the kitty’s coming in the front with me. I love cats.” Hagrid coos at Algernon, who purrs delightfully as he scratches behind the cat’s ears. “We all set to go?”
The sun is starting to set and Lily squints up at it. “The sun shows up, just as we’re about to leave. Typical.”
“Plenty of sun in Cokeworth,” Sirius shrugs and jumps into the cart. “You coming in or what?”
James nods, but doesn’t move an inch. “Sorry, yeah I’m just…” He looks back behind him, there’s just trees around them for miles and miles, but James acts like there are people all around them. “Just got a funny feeling.”

INTRODUCTION TO KETO Keto is an amazing diet and/or lifestyle that when paired with multiple other forms of healthy choices can be a quick way to lose a few pounds or a healthy way to live longterm allowing you to still enjoy life without estranging yourself from your friends and family.  It is very flexible and people that stick to keto find themselves in love with it and raving about their success, as long as they gave it the proper chance! I myself lost ten pounds the first week I did strict keto and I knew then I was hooked!
SCIENCE BEHIND KETO AND WHY IT WORKS The common american diet is very high in sugar, carbs, unhealthy fats, caffeine, sodium, etc. This recipe is a disaster waiting to happen, heart disease, obesity, cancers, diabetes, among a plethora of other terrible life stealing diseases that effect millions of americans. Whether you do a low carb, or low calorie, or low red meat and fat diet, the idea remains the same.  Reduce calorie intake vs output, avoid foods that cause inflamations or gastro-intestinal upsets, and eat filling whole foods that offer a lot of nutrient density. Now, the reason that keto works so good is the science behind the diet: When you reduce the amount of sugar (glucose)  your body intakes, which is its normal source of fuel, it panics, uses what it has, burns glycogen which is stored in the liver and muscles, and finally switches your body to KETONES (which burns FATS for fuel instead).  When your body is in Ketosis, it will burn your body fat and consumed fats for energy, to do normal body functions.  This sounds like a miracle, and I can honestly say it is.  Most average americans have anywhere from a 20%-50% body fat ratio, men usually on the lower end of that, where anything over 30% is usually considered overweight.   That being said, most people have a lot of fuel to burn that they would never have burned if they were eating a large amount of carbohydrates that the body prefers to burn first.  You literally have your own fuel just waiting to go, and you will feel awesome when you see the fat melting off your tummy, thighs, back, face.  :D
Myths and Misconceptions When I first started keto I thought I could eat as many hot dogs, burgers, chicken wings, ranch dressings, etc as I could stuff in my face.   Truth be told you can, but your body will be severely lacking vitamins and minerals that you need to be healthy so I would suggest making sure to vary your diet, always include a healthy fat (example: salmon, avocado, macadamia nuts) and lots of greens whenever possible.  If you absolutely cannot, taking a high nutrient density multi vitamin is really smart, as well as looking into electrolyte mixes or supplements. People will try to bully you or shame you for not eating "just one this" or "you have to try a bite" and after a little while, you absolutely can! But during the first month or so, til you become "fat adapted" it is best to be as diligent as possible, and you will be really proud of the results. Not all fats are created equal:  While dirty keto does exist and sometimes is necessary, try to remember that quality of your fuel will always dictate how you feel.  Will you feel better after a slice of greasy pizza or a big salad with lots of veggies and roasted turkey? Easy concept. You don't have to starve yourself.  This was the hardest part for me to learn at first.  Keto foods are filling, yummy, and full of flavor, so eat til you're about comfortably full and give the fork a rest.  You'll find you're sated for many hours! Not all people get the keto flu.  Some adapt to eating high fat really well with minimal issues.  If you are feeling dizzy, lightheaded, or stomach sick, make sure you have plenty of water and if you need to, have a shot of pickle juice or a sprinkle of salt in your water.  Vitamin water ZERO is also a decent way to get electrolytes without having to spend a lot on a supplement.  I'd avoid zero sugar gatorade though, the sweetener in it is sucralose which is bad for ketosis.
NOW TO THE FUN PART: THE FOOD! I do most of my shopping at a normal grocery store, and most of the things I mention can be bought at meijer, target, walmart, or whatever your local chain is. Buy organic if you want! But it isnt necessary.  Meats and dairy foods are best when bought all natural or organic if possible.  Look for words like grass finished, or pasture raised.
Breakfast ideas: Omelets - add whatever meats veggies and cheeses from list fit your choosing Cauliflower "hash" - sautee pieces of cauliflower with meats, veggies, top with cheese and let it melt :D keto "cereal" - 2 cups unsweetened coconut, sprinkle with cinnamon, stevia, coconut oil, pecans, macadamia nuts, whatever.  bake two minutes per side around 375 til toasted.  cool and serve with unsweetened hemp, oat, almond or soy milk and fresh berries if you want! Chorizo and eggs with avocado and sour cream - they do make turkey chorizo too! or make your own by adding hot sauce and spices to ground turkey.  :3 "Two Good" Makes a super low carb yogurt that tastes amazing  - i eat it with berries or a "Quest" brand protein cookie for breakfast! Chia pudding - 2 T. chia seeds, milk substitute or water, stevia, and whatever flavor you want to add! Peanut butter, cocoa powder for PB cup,  raspberry/almond,  blueberry/pecan.  Chill overnight, awesome grab and go Egg muffins  - mix up eggs like youd be making scrambled eggs, add some ricotta or cottage cheese (full fat only), add toppings, bake for 5-10 mins til middle is set (use a tooth pick).  Can freeze and pop in microwave or last a week in the fridge.  I like mine with pesto and mozzarella with tomato on top.
Lunch ideas: La tortilla factory low carb wrap "blt" - these tortillas are amazing and come in many sizes.  If you cant find those, find any brand that says "low carb" - look for net carbs under 6 for best choices.  Add avocado, turkey bacon, mayo if desired, lettuce, tomato, peppers, etc.  Eat with cheese chips (recipe in snacks) Soups:  Creamy chicken chili, broccoli cheese (substitute heavy cream and broth in place for milk in recipes) bone broth veggie soups (imagine PHO or Ramen with no noodles!) MAKE A BIG ASS SALAD WITH WHATEVER MEATS AND CHEESE AND VEGGIES YOU WANT   (that are safe on the list ofc) this is what i do a lot, and i put the dressing on the side so i can just munch on it throughout the day without it getting soggy.   If you find yourself picking certain parts out of your salad right away, try to focus on those more until your body is craving other things.  Some days i eat my meats right away, others i eat all my veggies.  Your body often tells you what you need without even realizing. If you're a grazer make a fruit and nut tray, or "lunchables" almost. There is a recipe for whats called CLOUD BREAD. It's basically like a fluffy meringue that is made with cream cheese and eggs. I dont make it a lot, I almost always would rather have those wraps.  They're that good and last longer :D Try to keep things with you that you know you will eat, rather than things you think you're supposed to eat, because cold fish sounds disgusting vs that yummy five piece chicken tender with hot sauce. >_>
Dinner Ideas: Dinner is my forte because for a long time I was doing OMAD keto, aka "One meal a day keto" where I would fast until dinner every day, except for coffee, tea and water.  During these times I dreamt up many cheat meals that I JUST HAD TO HAVE and went home and keto-ized em.  If there's a will there's a way, bahahaha. OMAD is not recommended at the start of ketosis because you may feel low on energy or dizzy sometimes and we want to avoid bad feelings during initiation so when you see the success you have you won't have a negative feeling as to why it happened.
LITERALLY IMAGINE YOUR FAVORITE DINNER. Whatever you're craving.  You can hack it. We got this.   Chinese/Take out? Easy mode.  You can make stir fries, fried cauliflower rice, sweet and sour chicken (using parmesan for a crust!), peanut "noodles" or "zoodles", egg foo young, etc! American: Wings, burgers, brats/sausages, grilled chicken, etc - most cook out foods in whole form are totally safe. Pair with grilled veggies or a salad, or make a pasta salad from zoodles with homemade italian dressing.  YUMMMM bish Italian: Low carb tomato sauces and "noodles", Fat head Pizza (link to fat head dough recipe will be at bottom.  This shit is dope.  I never even liked pizza before this).  Chicken Parmesan, "Spaghetti and Meatballs", Lasagna: AND OMG GUESS WHAT. Alfredo is like totally fair game, and its really good with mushrooms and chicken. :P Mexican: HOLY FUCK I EAT THIS STUFF SO MUCH.  Like, pretty much everything but the chips and rice are totally gucci for keto.  Taco/Burrito bowls, fajitas, ceviche, salsa, avocado salad, guacamole, and for dipping I make cheese chips or thin slices of cucumber spritzed with chili lime and salt. Greek: Greek salad, schwarma, gyros (either without bread or use the low carb wraps), hemp seed "Falafel", tzatziki sauce, feta cheese, olives, etc. I have even made indian and thai curries, moroccan food, middle eastern We have made chicken tenders, french fries, chips, "nachos", fish fry, breaded mushrooms, mozz sticks, cheese curds.  All your craving foods! The internet is wonderful for this, just make sure you are paying close attention to how much a portion is, or if its higher in carbs than you're allowed for the day.
Above I posted a picture for a shopping list.
This is a nice shopping list but I find it is sort of strict.  Try to stick to these items to start but You can add in things like more nuts or avocados, almond and coconut flours (to make cakes and breads!), and higher starch veggies and fruits as time goes on.  I get down on some cantaloupe pretty often, and have a cupcake at least once a month.
Intermittent Fasting IF is typically considered an advance technique or body reset especially after big meal days or cheating, and while it has amazing health benefits, I would suggest you research it yourself and decide if it's right for you.  I had a lot of luck with it because I hate to keep track of my calories on an app so I knew if I ate whatever I could within a five to seven hour period that the chances that I would eat more than 1800 calories would go way down.   Each person is different, if you feel physically hungry, don't deny that feeling. Here is a link that describes and explains types of IF. https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/intermittent-fasting-guide#methods
What to do when you go out to eat We live in a time where many people eat low carb, or restaurants are very willing to wiggle with ingredients or substitutions.  Remember that nicer restaurants appreciate this less, but if you know that it will be happening, you can always call the restaurant and let them know in advance.  Many chefs are reasonable and want your business and willing to help. Always check the menu for words like, naked, ask for sauces on the side, try to stick to things that are usually safe, blue cheese, ranch, vinaigrettes, mayos.  When a dish comes with a carb side, most places will double up on steamed or grilled veg for very little extra or no charge.  I get steak with a literal dick ton of broccoli or asparagus and lotsa butter and its good and filling. :D Burgers can be put on top of a side salad , or ask for a lettuce wrap.  Make sure wings and chickens arent breaded before frying or baking.  Chinese restaurants usually have a section that has all the same ingredients but sauce on the side and veggies steamed, good for when you go out.  Egg drop soup is usually ok as long as you don't eat a gallon of it. If something comes that you really want, but can't have, just have one small bite and cover the rest of it with too much salt or ketchup or something than you can handle, or trade it away.  This will prevent you from eating it all. There's lots of options and understand that whenever you go out, there is a chance that you might slip out of ketosis.  Don't be discouraged because a small slip is a lot easier to deal with than a big one, and you will feel fine within 12 hrs.
What to drink and when Coffee, espresso, unsweetened teas, club soda or la croix like drinks with zero fake sugars added (look for aspartame, sucralose, dextrose, erythritol, etc), pure liquors with no added flavor or sugar (vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, tequila), dry red wine (cabernet, merlot) dry white wine (sauvignon blanc, brut champagne, pinot grigo, chardonnay).  Keep in mind that alcohol still contains a lot of calories and while it will not likely bump you out of ketosis, it does delay your body burning calories because it is too busy trying to destroy the evil alcohol from your bloodstream (dramatic music) so limiting intake in the first month really helps you to get in the swing and feel good and hydrated :P. Side Note: Ketal One makes new no sugar added Botanical Vodka and the Peach one and the cucumber mint one are fucking amazing, the end.
"Carb cycling" cheat days, and how to IF YOU KNOW YOU'RE GONNA CHEAT mentally prepare yourself for that.  Know what you want to eat, what isnt worth it, and how to stop yourself when you are done.  Ever been on a bender where you drank like three days in a row and by the end you're like dude wtf happened all I wanted was to drink friday night and now its sunday where did it go".  This has happened to me lots with holidays and special occasion weekends, and the best advice I have for you is to pay attention to how cheating makes you feel.  Don't feel guilty unless you feel bad for your progress or your body.  Sadly, potatoes make me feel like garbage so I try to avoid them like the plague even when I do cheat. Try to not eat for as long as you can handle after you cheat to allow your body some rest and to burn the glucose and glycogen that may be still in your system.  If you feel good enough some cardio or lifting may help to get you back in faster. Ultimately, if keto is a lifestyle for you, remember that life happens and its ok to be human, and eat things that are unhealthy as long as its not the normal.  Remind yourself that you deserve to be happy as well as healthy and balance that in your mind.  Being positive and recognizing this will help you to not fall off the deep end either way, by being too strict or completely abandoning keto, which often in the early phase will lead you to gaining all that weight you lost back. Carb cycling is a form of keto diet for athletes or very physical people who benefit from a quick carb before intense activity in order to feed their muscles or whatever but as I am not one of those people, I just stick to my higher carb fruits and veggies when I think I might go for a run or walk, or drag my ass down the road, whatever you'd like to call it. >_>
Things to avoid that are a waste of money Don't buy "exo ketones" or "Keto drinks" or powders, anything "bullet-proof" is basically bullshit, you can make the same things for zillions of dollars less and it will taste better as well. Keto urine strips are pretty much just a waste of money, they aren't really indicative of where you are at. Expensive "keto" supplements aren't necessary, take your multi and drink your electrolytes and you should be good to go.  Keep in mind if you are an intense athlete I am not so like talk to your doctor or coach dude.

Review: Jollibee
By: RJ (@rga_02) & Amr (@siegarettes)
If you manage to find yourself inside the Seafood City Supermarket on the 5000 block of Elston Ave. in Chicago’s North Mayfair neighborhood you might find yourself looking at this overly enthusiastic bee.
Tumblr media
You might know him from such hit YouTube videos such as this or this - but he is more than a man in a suit dancing to questionable pop songs, he’s the mascot of a fast-food chain that serves one of the best-fried chicken and spaghetti out there. That place is called Jollibee.
For those who don’t know about this mystical place, let me give you a brief history lesson.
Jollibee is a Filipino fast food restaurant chain that was founded 41 years ago in the Philippines. It first expanded overseas in 1986 with a location in Taiwan and has since opened up various locations around the world from the United States to Saudi Arabia.
But what makes Jollibee so special and unique from their competitors is the food that they serve. It is a blend of your typical Americana mixed in with Filipino comfort food. The most notable items from the menu are the aforementioned fried chicken and spaghetti, let’s look over the spaghetti first.
Tumblr media
The Spaghetti
The spaghetti is unlike the typical dish that you would find elsewhere. Instead of the usual marinara sauce, it’s dosed with ketchup - specifically banana ketchup. There is another history lesson behind the reasoning for this. During World War 2 there was a shortage of tomatoes in the Philippines, so they had to use banana ketchup for their spaghetti dishes. This gives it a unique sweet and savory flavor. Also present are sausage slices instead of ground beef. In the Philippines, this is usually interchangeable with hot dogs. On top is melted cheese which balances out the taste of the meat and the banana ketchup.
The Chicken
Next, we’ll discuss the chicken. Until my last breath, I will state that fried chicken from Jollibee is up there alongside Popeyes and Harold’s Chicken. Do you remember this screencap of a reviewer talking about Gears of War 2?
Tumblr media
The same idea applies to chicken from Jollibee. Sometimes, it’s just too good.
I know I might sound shameless right now, but the crispiness of the chicken gives it a favorable juicy bite with a distinct aftertaste - but the aftertaste is also its downfall. If you eat large amounts of the chicken, the aftertaste will start to overtake the taste of the chicken.
Let’s Talk About That Gravy
Tumblr media
Amr here. I've never been to the Philippines. Well, not as an adult who can remember it anyway. So I can't tell you if Jollibee is just like it is "back home" or whatever. What I can tell you is that it smells the way church potluck did. There's those very specific smells of Filipino cooking. Being fast food doesn't dilute it much either. Filipino cooking was always something for large groups--to serve families and gatherings of friends. It only makes sense to see a crowd all sharing the same meals.
The second thing I can tell you about Jollibee is that their fried chicken and spaghetti is a big deal. RJ's got your rundown on that spaghetti so let me just talk about that damn gravy. Peppery, slightly sweet, with maybe some soy sauce and chicken stock? I'm not sure exactly what's in it but the important part is the fragrance. It's got something full-bodied, that makes me feel like I've already eaten a great meal before I've even tasted it. And it pairs with basically every part of the meal.
Tumblr media
Gravy complements the perfect crispy breading of the fried chicken with a contrasting texture and strong spices. Don't discount the chicken--it's great enough to stand on its own--but if you're not having it with gravy you're not doing it right. Same with the fries. They're basically mashed potatoes in a crispy crust, the platonic ideal of fast food fries. And potato mash needs gravy.
Tumblr media
This time around I got the Adobo Rice as well. Basically rice made with beef adobo in it. It's got a fantastic fragrance to it. Adobo is pieces of meat cooked for a long period with tons of soy sauce, garlic and vinegar, so as you can imagine it's got a STRONG flavor and aroma. The rice here isn't anywhere as strong since it lacks the actual adobo sauce, but it retains a touch of that garlic and vinegar smell that makes it good. It's honestly more of a garlic rice with vinegar but it's still a good compliment so I'm not complaining. And yes, it does taste great with gravy.
Tumblr media
Pricing
Jollibee’s pricing is on par with the likes of KFC and Popeyes. For example, the meal I reviewed above was around $7 for the price of two chicken strips, spaghetti, and a medium sized pop. - RJ
Final Thoughts
Jollibee is a fantastic fast food joint that offers distinct flavors you wouldn’t find elsewhere. The downside is that their menu can be a bit lacking in variety and if you do somehow eat here every week, you will most likely be tired of the menu by the end of the month.

Note
Im arriving tomorrow in Romania for Euros and some tourism. Since I dont really know anyone to ask, could you advise me on some food and beverages that you like or that are typical and one I should be aware of etc? Thank u!
Hope you have fun! Most touristy restauntants, like the ones in city centers, have menus in English, too, so you shouldn't worry about not knowing what things are.
Fair warning, we celebrate Easter this week, so if you go to restaurants and see Easter specials/menus, that means a lot of lamb meat. Also, on Saturday at midnight, people go to church, so don’t freak out if you see literally everyone in the streets with lit candles on Saturday night hahahah.
Ok, here are some of the traditional things.
Soup/Ciorba
So, 'ciorbă', is some kind of soup, only it's sour. Kinda like the Russian bortsch? Soup is 'supă'.
'Ciorbă de fasole'. It's beans (sour) soup. Some places serve it in bread, instead of an actual plate. Like they have a round bread, cut it, carve the soft, middle part and replace that with the soup. Some add bacon to it. Sometimes it’s served with pickled onions. It's really good!
'Ciorbă de perișoare'. Sour soup with meatballs and vegetables.
'Ciorbă de burtă'. It's tripe (sour) soup. It has tripe in it, so it might be a a turn off lol. I don't know about this one, it's kind of an acquired taste, you might not love it. I definitely don't.
'Ciorbă rădăuțeană'. I think this is meant to be the ligther/less difficult to like version of the tripe soup. It's similar in taste, but instead of tripe it has chicken breast strips. A safer choice, if you ask me.
Then there are soups, like tomato soup, chicken noodle soups, etc., but those aren't particularly special. I mean, we eat those a lot, too, but they're not different from how others make them.
Main Course
'Tochitură'. Several types of meat (sausage, pork, chicken bits) in tomato and red wine sauce. Comes with polenta and a fried egg and grated cheese on top. My favorite Romanian dish tbh, I even made it for Christmas lmao.
'Sarmale'. Minced meat rolled in sour cagabe leaves. You can have that with polenta. You can have anything with polenta here probably lol. My second fav.
'Mici'. Minced meat rolls made of beef, pork and lamb meat and spices. They go with fries and mustard.
You'll find all sort of other meat based dishes, because we eat tons of meat, like men! Fried, grilled, you name it. ‘Chiftele’ (meat balls), all sort of pork, ‘Șnițele’ (fried chicken slices), ‘Ardei umpluți’ (bell peppers, baked and filled with, you guessed it, more meat).
I don't think we have much traditional street food. You'll find a lot of 'șaorma' places, though (shawarma / souvlaki wrap thing).
Desserts
'Papanași'. They're donuts with sour cream and jam and they're awesome!
'Clătite'. they usually translate as pancakes, but they're not the fluffy, American pancakes, but thin, rolled and filled with jam, or honey and nuts, or chocolate.
'Cremă de zahăr ars'. This is pretty common too, it's basically Crème Brûlée.
‘Kurtos Kalacs’. I think these are more of a Hungarian thing, but are typical for the Transylvania region. You’ll find these in shops and they usually make them on the spot. It’s sweet dough coated with sugar, nuts, coconut, cinnamon, etc. Can’t wait to have some in Cluj, since you rarely find them in Bucharest.
'Cozonac'. You don't usually find this in restaurants, but it's a traditional Easter dessert, so in case you come across it, it's sweet bread, sometimes filled with chocolate and nuts, or turkish delight. Everyone and their mothers are making it at home this week for Easter. If it's not well made, it's not exactly great, though.
Drinks
I don't think we have some specific soft drinks. You'll find the ones you can buy anywhere, like Coke, Pepsi, etc. Because of the lemonade discourse post, I have to say, if you order 'Limonadă' (lemonade), you'll get tap or mineral water with freshly squeezed lemon juice and sugar/honey. Not Spite, or 7up.
For alcohol, we have a lot of local wine, which is pretty cheap if you buy it at a supermarket. I think the best local kinds are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, of Fetească neagră.
Some traditional alcoholoc drinks are 'Țuică', or 'Palică'. Those are basically fruity spirits, țuică being made of plums exclusively. They are served in shot glasses and generally both are stronger than vodka (it depends, though). I find those a punishment for your throat, so beware lol.
Ok, I might forget a few things, but this turned out too long as is hahah. Romanian food is really tasty, but it’s also pretty fat/greasy, so there’s that. Hope this was helpful. Enjoy!

The Coronavirus Diet...according to the WFP
On March 23, the World Food Programme issued guidelines on the “do’s” and “dont’s” of eating while on quarantine.
Here are the 7 tips on keeping a healthy diet in the face of coronavirus…according to the WFP… and my personal take on each of them…
1. Hydrate, hydrate…
The body is made of about 75 percent water. The usual recommendation is eight glasses per day of fluid. As we are less active during lockdowns, and may not feel as thirsty, it is important to set regular reminders to ensure we are hydrating our bodies.
For flavour and additional nutrients, add slices of cucumber, lemon or orange to the humble glass of water. Avoid sweetened beverages such as soft drinks and soda because of high sugar content. If you want to know more about sweeteners, check the article posted on the 6th of December 2019 entitled “Food Additives To Avoid(Part 2/3: Sweeteners)”.
My take:  As you can see we are back to basics (Level Zéro Maslow pyramid  kind of basic) with what would easily hold number   1 spot in  a moronic pamphlet called “Survival Tips for Dummies”. This first “tip” is such an obvious one that  it makes me  feel  like nutritionists might not deserve the kind of  praise, reverence and respect they currently do. Having said that, I would still commend the WFP for the gentle reminder…
2. GO foods
These foods are essential for energy, which is crucial for thinking, working, and fending off disease — think staples such as rice, pasta, bread and root crops. Choose things like wholegrain bread and mixed-grain rice, which release energy more slowly, fuelling you for longer and helping to maintain your weight.
My take:  Wait…What??? Did I read this one right? This must be a joke…right? How on earth does shoving carb-rich staple foods while on quarantine (aka: not moving your butt for most of the day) help promoting healthy eating habits, let alone combating viral infections.  Look, as much as I understand and even encourage safe social distancing during these unusual times (read “not making as many trips to the grocery store to buy fresh fruits and vegetables”) I don’t see how so called staple foods (most of them starchy) are going to help us fight this  virus. Moreover, I was under the impression that this was going to provide all of us with an opportunity to hone our healthy cooking habits/skills…I don’t know about you but I don’t see how dropping a bag of rice in boiled water remotely ressembles the cookbook definition of a “recipe”… . All jokes aside, the only thing that these so-called staple foods are going to do is to spike  your insulin without your body’s ability to metabolise/burn them, unless you are practising a moderately intense physical activity , in which case the integration of low GI starches into your diet does add value. Otherwise, please do yourself and your family a favour and stay away from high GI foods and focus instead on fresh/frozen low GI fruits and vegetables (the greener the better). Think spinach, asparagus, avocados, kale, zucchini, courgettes, etc… . We need to look for foods that are rich in essential vitamins and minerals…basically anything that can strengthen our immune system. Feel free to take supplements, especially vitamin D-3 as most of us are not getting as much sunshine as we normally would.
3. GROW foods
These help physical growth, especially for children. GROW foods rebuild your body when you are unwell or have an infection. They are often required in small amounts, but are essential to be consumed daily.
These include meat, fish, eggs, milk and other dairy products such as cheese and yoghurt. It’s worth buying UHT milk and other dairy products which have a long shelf life and freezing meat and fish.
Depending on the expiry date, eggs can be kept in the fridge for up to three weeks from the time of purchase. Eggs are a good source of low-fat protein and a range of vitamins.
Limit the consumption of canned meat because it is usually high in salt and fat. Canned tuna is a healthier alternative. Plant-based sources of proteins such as lentils and beans have a long shelf life, and are rich in vitamins and minerals. Rinse dry foods thoroughly before cooking.
My take: This third “tip” makes much more sense…even though I would caution against overdoing it on animal proteins, especially certain dairy products such as UHT Milk, yoghurts and cream cheese. Stick to harder cheeses such as gouda, emmental and cheddar as they contain lower lactose concentration. Try as much as you can to substitute cows milk with alternative milks such as almond milk or coconut milk, whether to make your morning latte or simply add some creaminess and flavour to your recipes. Also, try to avoid cold cuts such as ham, salami or carpaccio as they tend to be loaded with preservatives and additives.
4. GLOW foods
These make sure the body works well, help to protect the body from diseases and fight off illness. All foods have some vitamins and minerals, but colourful fruits and vegetables are generally rich in vitamins and antioxidants.
Build a colourful plate with:
Green fruits and vegetables: broccoli, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, Brussels sprouts, green beans, cucumbers, zucchini, peas, green pepper, green apples, kiwi, green grapes, lime, avocado.
Orange and yellow fruits and vegetables: carrots, pumpkin, sweet corn, sweet potato, yellow pepper, yellow tomatoes, yellow apples, apricots, oranges, grapefruit, peaches, mangoes, papaya, pears, pineapple.
Red fruits and vegetables: tomatoes, radishes, red cabbage, beets, red grapes, strawberries, watermelon, cherries, raspberries, pomegranates, cranberries, red apples.
Blue and purple fruits and vegetables: eggplant, purple cabbage, purple potatoes, blackberries, blueberries, purple grapes, plums, raisins, figs.
Preserved fruits and vegetables: whether canned, frozen, dried or fermented/pickled, these are a great alternative source when fresh fruits and vegetables are difficult to find due to seasonality or if they cannot be bought daily.
My take:  Once again, the WFP almost hit it on the nail with this fourth tip. With the exception of preserved  fruits and vegetables and certain high GI fruits such as pineapple, papaya, mangoes(any tropical fruits really) and sweet corn(aka “GMO in a piece of food”), this colour-coded list of fruits and vegetables is spot one. Try to privilege green vegetables(at least 50% of your plate) and complete your plate with the remaining colours.
5. Fortified foods and supplements
Depending on your situation, fortified foods and supplements may be required or combined with meals to supply required nutrients, especially in contexts where diets are of poor quality and limited quantity due to food insecurity.
My take:  I am a bit confused with this one… . What does the WFP mean by food insecurity? Do they mean food scarcity due to supply chain instability and/or insecurity prone locations (as in human beings carrying loaded guns while grocery shopping … and potentially threatening other shoppers over a T-Roll). All jokes aside, if you live in such an insecure environment and feel like your life is at stake, it would  indeed be a good idea to stock up on food with longer shelf life, whether fortified or not…just in case.
6. Exercise
Don’t forget to also squeeze in some physical activity! The World Health Organization recommends 30 minutes of physical activity a day for adults, and one hour a day for children. If allowed, go outside for a walk or a run, while keeping a safe distance from others. If you cannot leave the house, find an exercise video online, dance to music, do some yoga, or walk up and down the stairs.
My take: Why is exercise part of  a list on tips on keeping a healthy “diet” under quarantine? Looks like the folks at the WFP haven’t looked up the definitions of “quarantine”… .Truth be told, exercise is a vital component of any human beings ability to physically and mentally sail through such uncertain times. Beyond the fact that we all come with varying degrees of  “insanity" thresholds, whether programmed or triggered, the reported feeling of powerlessness in front of the forces of nature currently at play affects all of us on a deeper level, regardless of our age, race, status, educational background, income levels, etc…. Letting the steam off through exercise is therefore a good way to keep a balanced lifestyle…as long as you don’t put other people’s health and lives at risk.
7. NO foods — what to avoid
Foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt (heavily processed foods) are not considered part of a healthy diet. It’s particularly important at this moment to avoid these foods, as they do not provide any nutritional benefit.
My take: Really!? Did they really have to add such an obvious tip on the list. Looks like whoever started the list (hydration)  received the honour of finishing it up with another “dummy”. In case some of you still have doubts, I am sorry to say that the jury (over 100 studies) has confirmed that any processed food is…definitely…unquestionably…ultimately…1000%…bad for you!!! Case closed.
There you go…the 7 tips on keeping a healthy diet in the face of coronavirus…according to the WFP… and my somewhat condescending take on each of them…for which I make no apology… . You can thank me once we are through this… .
Coming up next: The Actual Coronavirus…according to yours truly…
Until then…take care of you and your loved ones.

Can I Eat Fruit On a Keto Diet?
Question: “Can I eat fruit on a ketogenic diet?”
Answer: “Sure, if you want!”
I’m kidding, of course. I know why people ask this question. It’s because in the keto world fruit is a confusing, often contentious topic. You’ll sometimes see keto folks draw a hard line in the sand, saying that all fruits, or sometimes specific fruits, are “not allowed” on a ketogenic diet. I’ve written before about why I feel it’s inappropriate to label foods as “keto” or “not keto.” People need to consider their own goals, health, activity level, and food preferences when formulating their eating strategies.
Nevertheless, it’s true that it can be hard to figure out how to incorporate fruit into your keto diet. On the one hand, it’s “real” food: unprocessed, “whole,” and full of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and phytonutrients. It’s also Primal/paleo approved in moderation. On the other hand, the carbs in a typical serving of fruit can amount to a considerable chunk out of one’s daily carb allotment, especially for people who adhere to a very strict version of keto that only allows 20 to 30 grams of carbohydrate per day (as opposed to the Keto Reset Diet’s 50 gram per day suggestion).
So where does fruit fit for the average person following a Keto Reset Diet?
Keto People CAN Eat Carbs
Sometimes you’ll hear someone say that keto-ers can’t eat fruit because they “don’t eat carbs.” They really mean that keto folks don’t eat sugar, which is still a gross oversimplification because keto people absolutely do eat carbs. If you’re eating according to the Keto Reset Diet, you’ll start by aiming for 50 grams of carbohydrates per day—perhaps somewhat less if you are dealing with type 2 diabetes or metabolic syndrome—with some wiggle room if most of your carbs come from above-ground veggies and avocados.
From the point of view of the Keto Reset, we want you to choose your carb sources from among those included on the Primal Blueprint Food Pyramid. That means no grains or added sugars, but eating nutrient-dense vegetables and, yes, even some fruit if you wish.
What Fruits Are Best For Keto?
When picking the “best” fruits for keto, it comes down to how many carbs are in a serving. Higher carb fruits are going to be harder to incorporate into a keto diet while still allowing room for the liberal intake of vegetables and avocados encouraged in the Keto Reset.
The information below is taken from the Cronometer database. Make sure you pay attention to the serving size. I selected what seemed like reasonable servings of each by volume instead of weight (who knows what 100g of grapes looks like compared to 100g of watermelon?). I also provided the weight for reference, as well as the fiber content. The Keto Reset Diet does not recommend counting net carbs for fruit though.
Before getting to the data, note that this list omits foods like tomatoes and olives because that’s not what people mean when they ask about fruit.
Let’s also get two items out of the way that always appear on “keto approved fruits” lists:
Avocados: Is there any question about them being keto-friendly? So you know, one whole avocado (136 grams) has 12 grams of carbs (9 grams fiber), as well as 21 grams of fat.
Lemons: Most people aren’t eating lemons but juicing them, right? The juice from one whole lemon has 3 to 4 grams of carb (about 1 gram per tablespoon).
Now for the rest…
Berries:
Blackberries (½ cup, 72 grams): 7 grams carb (4 grams fiber)
Raspberries (½ cup, 62 grams): 7 grams carb (4 grams fiber)
Blueberries (½ cup, 74 grams): 11 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Strawberries (½ cup halves, 76 grams): 12 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Stone Fruits:
Apricot (each, 35 grams): 4 grams carb (1 gram fiber)
Plum (1 medium, 66 grams): 8 grams carb (1 gram fiber)
Peach (1 medium, 150 grams): 14 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Nectarine (1 medium, 142 grams): 15 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Melons:
Watermelon (1 cup cubed, 152 grams): 12 grams carb (1 gram fiber)
Cantaloupe (1 cup cubed, 160 grams): 13 grams carb (1 gram fiber)
Honeydew (1 cup cubed, 191 grams): 17 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Tropical Fruits:
Papaya (1 cup cubed, 144 grams): 16 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Pineapple (1 cup cubed, 165 grams): 22 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Banana (1 small, 101 grams): 23 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Coconut meat (½ cup, 163 grams): 25 grams carb (15 grams fiber)
Mango (1 cup sliced, 165 grams): 25 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Other Fruits:
Clementine (each, 74 grams): 9 grams carb (1 gram fiber)
Fig (1 medium, 50 grams): 10 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Kiwi (1 each, 69 grams): 10 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Orange (1 small, 96 grams): 11 grams carb (2 grams fiber)
Apple, green (1 small, 144 grams): 20 grams carb (4 grams fiber)
Grapefruit (1 small, 200 grams): 21 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Pear (1 small, 148 grams): 23 grams carb (5 grams fiber)
Apple, red (1 small, 158 grams): 24 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Cherries (1 cup, 154 grams): 25 grams carb (3 grams fiber)
Grapes (1 cup, 151 grams): 27 grams carb (1 gram fiber)
You can see why it is difficult to work fruit into a ketogenic diet, and also why blackberries and raspberries are the most often recommended fruit for keto-ers. Nevertheless, it’s possible.
Just for comparison, the 7 grams of carbs you “spend” on ½ cup of blackberries could also be allocated to any of the following:
1 cup of cooked whole Brussels sprouts
1 cup cooked chopped broccoli
2 cups of raw chopped broccoli
1¾ cups raw shredded cabbage
8 medium baby carrots
4 cups of baby spinach
5 cups of raw kale
1 whole small cucumber
1 medium red bell pepper
Tips For Incorporating Fruit Into Your Keto Diet
Select lower-carb fruits and limit portion sizes.
Eat whole fruit, not fruit juices. Whole fruits induce a smaller glycemic and insulin response. Smoothies can quickly become carb bombs, and they are generally less satiating than their ingredients eaten separately because you don’t have to chew them. Include smoothies mindfully.
Consider timing them strategically around the times when you are most insulin sensitive: in the morning and especially after exercise. (This is solid advice for any higher carb food or meal.) Likewise, you might save fruit intake for designated higher carb meals (“carb ups”) if this is part of your routine. However, if you struggle with insulin resistance, any kind of carb ups might not be appropriate for you at this time.
Eat seasonally and locally. This recommendation isn’t unique to keto dieters, but eating seasonally and locally will automatically limit your consumption of fruits for much of the year unless you live someplace warm (in which case, hopefully you’re getting lots of outdoor time and sun exposure year round, too!)
But I Heard I Need to Avoid Fructose For Health?
Fructose is often demonized because it’s thought (incorrectly) that fructose uniquely contributes to de novo lipogenesis. As Mark has written previously, although fructose and glucose are metabolized differently in the body, it is probably splitting hairs to argue that one is more or less healthy than the other when they are considered in the context of one’s entire diet. And while reducing sugar intake has been shown to improve various health markers, this usually means cutting back on high fructose corn syrup and other added sugars, not eliminating a green apple and a serving of berries. If you’re eating a Primal-aligned ketogenic diet and are already limiting your total sugar intake, it’s probably not necessary to specifically avoid fructose that comes in the form of whole fruit.
That said, some of the GI disorders that are so common nowadays might be attributable at least in part to issues of fructose malabsorption. If you have been diagnosed with IBS or otherwise experience chronic GI symptoms, you might consider asking your doctor for a hydrogen breath test to detect fructose malabsorption. You can also try eliminating and then reintroducing fruit to see if it affects your symptoms.
Remember, Constant Ketosis Is Not Required
If you’re avoiding fruit because you’re afraid to get knocked out of ketosis, remember that once you’re keto-adapted it’s unnecessary to stay in ketosis 100% of the time unless you’re using a therapeutic keto diet to treat a serious medical condition. Also, if there’s a fruit you especially want to include in your keto diet, you can also test your individual physiological response to it using a blood ketone meter.
A final word: When considering whether to add more fruit to your keto diet, ask yourself whether you’re still at a point where you would be better off abstaining in order to avoid triggering cravings for sweet foods. This is an n=1 situation. If you feel like some fruit would add to your general enjoyment of your keto way of eating, or you’re looking for ways to incorporate more Primal-approved carbs, go for it. If you’re still struggling to break the sugar habit, perhaps hold off for now, knowing you can always choose to add fruit later.
