Full-Size / True Color Version
Sometimes I think about the fact that first living being to orbit the Earth couldn't understand what was happening to her, couldn't understand the history she was making. Laika wasn't a volunteer. The technology to bring her back alive didn't exist. They sent her up anyway. She died, scared and alone, in a malfunctioning spacecraft hastily built to meet a political deadline.
When her heart rate tripled from the stress of acceleration, did she understand the magnitude of what she was experiencing? When she saw the stars outside her little window, did she believe the world had gone dark? In her final hours, did she feel wonder, or just fear?
"The more time passes, the more I’m sorry about it. We shouldn’t have done it. We did not learn enough from this mission to justify the death of the dog. When you understand that you can’t bring back Laika, that she perishes out there, and that no one can bring her back…that is a very heavy feeling."
Oleg G. Gazenko
For me, there's some small consolation, at least, in knowing that although her death was unnecessary and cruel, Laika will never be forgotten. I love you, Laika. May you find peace among the stars.
Prints are available here.

been reading the Alexander Trilogy and kept making fun of Hephaistion for being so thoroughly whipped for Alexander but then actually decided to draw him all bright and a little sweaty after exercise and yeah, yeah I see the vision
(referenced these ivory sculptures for the face reference, this would be when he's maybe 18-ish, presumably before exile)

This is such a wild departure from what I usually post but due to the cyclical nature of my interests, I can't stop thinking about Higekiri and Hizamaru's Kemono performance in the 2020 SOGA musical because like?? LIKE??
Nevermind that I'm just very interested in the twins in general, nevermind that I've always held SOGA up as the gold standard when it comes to outfit design in the myus (which has only very recently started being genuinely surpassed with productions like Hanakage's concert outfits or Goumyu's gorgeous, gorgeous tailoring) but there's also something about the whole presentation of SOGA that gets to me. Like a lot of things concerning the Genji twins, the presentation of the play (staging, choreography, costume design) is based around the Higekiri and Hizamaru being two halves of a greater whole, meaning that they parallel each other throughout the whole two hour jaunt. Kemono is such a perfect microcosm of the mirroring they've been doing for the whole production, including them doing the same choreo at specific times, as-above-so-below imagery with Higekiri on the balcony vs Hizamaru on the center floor
But there's also the way that their crest placements have been mirroring each other's on all of their outfits and now, for this performance, they both wear it on their left breast, right sleeves in their respecting black and white.
Just UGH - Toumyu is generally very impeccable with it's sense of staging and organisation of visual themes but they really knocked it out of the park for SOGA and I just needed to talk about it a little.

take two on aerin’s wardrobe! I'm much happier with how these came out :) dark haired version is from my own needlessly complicated au timeline; blond version is from the hotd timeline where he's a son of saera targaryen who comes to westeros shortly before the dance and winds up screwing over helping the greens :3c

Help girl I’m thinking about Warcraft lore again because of that post about Cleo and my desire to mould this into a backstory for Cleo the minecraft roleplay character, and it led me down the mental path of remembering that one of the natural enemies of zombies in that lore is werewolves. They come from neighbouring kingdoms that were both once human, but who became zombie/werewolves as part of some disease/curse that ultimately destroyed their nations.
And as an enjoyer of the Cleo-Ren dynamic (and a zombiedog shipper) that is very interesting to me actually. You could do something with that.
Cleo and her people were turned into monsters.
Ren and his people turned into monsters to defend themselves against the other monsters.
Both of them had a struggle with instincts making them feral and violent, only to regain control of themselves, left to pick of the pieces of a fractured life that could not be repaired.
Now they live next to each other and Ren makes Cleo wear silly hats while they fondly tease him about his middle management aspirations.
It is about the healing and it is also about the goofiness.

@heartofstanding tagged me in this meme months ago and unfortunately it took me this long to get to it because I had a mild crisis over how long it's been since I've read a novel, let alone one that I loved 😅 so this is nine of my favourite novels (not books, because if I included manga/short stories/comics/etc this would be giant)
0The Picture of Dorian Gray -- Oscar Wilde// Pyrrhus-- Mark Merlis//The Scarecrow--Ronald Hugh Morrieson//Unnatural History--Kate Osman//Tunnels of Blood--Darren Shan//The Coffin Dancer--Jeffery Deaver//Hero--Perry Moore//Frankenstein--Mary Shelley//One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-- Ken Kasey

oooh number 6!
6. 3 characters that inspire you
Honda Tohru (Fruits Basket)
I fell in love with her when I first read the series when I was 11 and her kindness and openness with love is something that's always stuck out to me.
Louise Banks (Arrival)
Linguists? People who are multilingual?? ♡ ♡ ♡ But the choice she made at the end of the movie, having seen everything play out? That's what gets me.
Cassandra
That Cassandra was cursed to see the future and have no one believe her, but continued going is something I will always love. That she continued to try to warn those around her despite knowing they would not trust her and that it was her fate for spurning a god is something that I will always love.

like...not trying to offend anyone but I’m honestly becoming more and more convinced that catholocism (& probably christianity as a whole) are simply irredeemable? like I understand that the actual message in the bible is all about love and peace or whatever, but I don’t understand how you can look at all the harm that christiandom has wrought and continues to wreak, all the people they have hurt in the name of their faith, and think that the probably intention of some dudes a couple thousand years ago means more than...all of that.

Tumblr moves so fast, and rewrites its history so fast, I just can’t keep up. What I mean is, the whole debate about the word queer used to have people who were really, really pro trans and often trans themselves on the side of ‘please don’t call me queer’ and ‘I have concerns that this umbrella term may be used to conceal differences in our marginilisation’. Or even just ‘if you like the term qu**r you must be a white bigot because it’s a slur!’ (With this one I have a specific person in mind, a trans woman who is a youtuber and twitter commentator, who I won’t name but if I say she made a very famous video essay about SU then you will probably know who it is. She used to often say things like this, to the point that the SU video essay even blocks out the word queer in an image of different identifiers that she uses to illustrate an unrelated point. I believe her neuroatypicality makes her fixate very strongly on issues in a black and white way, so that may explain her stance on a number of issues, and if she doesn’t think this way any more she certainly did a few years ago.)
I’ve been there for years of this endless debate happening on tumblr and don’t recognise the version a lot of people are talking about. I feel like my head is on backwards when people essentially use the argument ‘well TERFs hate the term queer so......you’d better start liking it’. I feel like some people who are queer agnostic will say ‘ok say no more!’ to this argument because they don’t want to be like TERFs, but it’s not actually a good pro-queer stance, it’s manipulation, in the same way as that one (pro-trans btw) communist blogger on here used to yell that anyone who liked the term queer must be middle class, educated, and have never faced any real hardship in their lives. Being faced with manipulative language like this, a lot of people will change their views, but it’s not particularly fair, especially when you weaponise the ways people really want to do the right thing by other marginilised groups against them.
It’s very easy to say ‘well don’t listen to their manipulation, listen to MY manipulation because I’m right!’ It would be harder but ultimately more honest to use real arguments. If someone doesn’t like something you do like, or vice versa, they are probably just someone with a different opinion formed by their different set of life experiences (used in a morally neutral way not a ‘maybe you/they are overly privileged!’ way). I don’t read people like the above two examples who use manipulation and social justice language like this any more, because I realised that I didn’t have to in order to be a good social justice person who listens to marginilised people. (FYI that idea also from tumblr, for a long time it was very un-nuanced and also gave the strong impression that the more uncomfortable a marginilised person’s writing makes you, the better, leading those who were more exrtreme in their views to get more airtime.)
Let’s not forget the history of emotive writing on tumblr used to manipulate. Let’s do better.
