Pirate101 ask Meme!!!
Questions 1, 2, 4, 5, 6,7, 9, 10, 12, 18,27, 28, 34, 38, and 41!!!
oh man that's a lot of questions, ok lets go
1 - Favorite crew member/companion?
bonnie anne my beloved. she’s so cool I wish foxes were real.
2 - Favorite world?
marleybone. the aesthetics and music go hard and the story peaks here
4 - What is your favorite class to play as and why?
musketeer for soloing cause it's the easiest imo and also the most fun, privateer for group play cause I like playing support
5 - What are the backstories for your Pirate? (Parents' death, where were they trained, Etc.)
Esmee: armada/skull island. Grew up among the rats in the sewers, having to steal what she could to get by, leading to her being quite adept at sneaking and using daggers. Strongly despises the Armada since she lost her parents to them, so she tends to be a lot more reckless whenever in a battle against clockworks.
Remmy: storm/marleybone. Was aboard a ship with his parents and sister, Maeve, when a storm struck. His parents died in the storm while he and Maeve where separated. After which, he was found by a Marleybonian ship and the dogs took him in. He grew up in Marleybone training to be a privateer but eventually found ranged weapons to be more to his liking. Was aboard a cargo ship tranporting weapons to Port Regal when he got captured in ambush by the Armada, and met Esmee that way.
Brynn: lost/marleybone. AU character of my ice wiz Brynn, just thought it would be fun to have her as a pirate so yeah no backstory.
Flint: mutiny/mooshu. haven't really worked out a backstory for him, this is just what it says in game. Will likely be change once I develope him more.
Maeve: squid/krokotopia. As mentioned earlier, she is Remmy's sister who was seperated in a storm (that a squid may or may have not been present in idk yet). Ended up in Krok where she learned magic.
6 - Who is your LEAST favorite crew member/companion and why?
wing chun, his voice and personality is a bit grating. idk I don’t really hate any of the mainline companions, and most of the non-story ones aren’t memorable and are lackluster combat-wise so they all meld together, so again I don’t have strong negative feelings towards any one in particular.
7 - How many Pirates do you have?
six, have five maxed out, the sixth was actually my first pirate I made, a musketeer named Ingrid, but I didn't make it that far into the tutorial before stopping. Later I made Esmee and it was then I got super into the game. I don't plan on questing with Ingrid anytime but I don't really feel like deleting her so she's just kinda there
9 - Any headcanons for your crew?
uuuuhhhheeeeuguh i got nothing sorry
10 - What does your flag look like? What are your crew colors?
Esmee
Tumblr media
Remmy
Tumblr media
Brynn
Tumblr media
Flint
Tumblr media
Maeve (hopefully I stay settled on this one instead of changing it a fifty more times)
Tumblr media
12 - Do you headcanon anyone as LGBTQIA+? If so, who?
yeah I got a few. Bonnie: Lesbian, Ratbeard: gay, Toro: bi, Gracie: aro/ace, Sarah: lesbian. I would include Catbeard but that's canon now so.
as for my pirates, Esmee: ace, Remmy: bi, Brynn: pan, Maeve: trans mtf.
Flint is the token straight who's on thin ice
18 - Opinions on Cool Ranch?
love Cool Ranch. Visually it's gorgeous and the music absolutely slaps, however some parts of it drag and I don't like having to choose between wearing something culturally offensive or having shitty stats for my witchdoctor.
27 - Is there anything you wish was in the game? (Crafting? Fishing?)
tbh I find crafting really annoying in wiz so I hope it never comes to pirate. But I would love to see events akin to wiz's lost pages/five boxes. Especially five boxes I would love to see pirate get its own version of that.
28 - How long have you been playing Pirate101?
at least 3 years, can't remember exactly when I started
34 - What are the hardest and easiest parts of the game to play for you?
easiest is pretty much everything up until Cool Ranch, which is where the difficulty starts to ramp up. hardest is definitely the new updates, Tartarus and Wheeler especially.
38 - Is there anything you hope for in a future update(s)? What would you like to see?
would really love to go to Albion sometime. as for features, pretty much stuff we already have in wiz like character name/appearance changing, option to hide quests, and setting a minimum player requirement for team up, and please for the love of all that is holy give us the option to trash doubloons
41 - How did you first discover Pirate101? (Commercial, a friend, fanart, etc.) What inspired you to play?
kind of always knew about it through wiz, wasn't until around 2020/2021ish that I got interested in playing

Anything to Add?
The final question in this survey was a write-in section for people to leave any additional comments. 113 people responded.
Important/Particularly Interesting Comments
• I hope this goes well for you because you seem nice and if you have any advice for new to the community 15 year olds like me, don't be afraid to share because I'm trying to embrace my sexuality as much as possible but it can be hard when I don't know where to go or turn to to find what I'm supposed to do and where to ask questions and just fully embrass this part of me and it can be hard when I don't even know many if any aspecs so representation is great and it is helpful to hear your experiences and how you handle certain parts, so just keep doing what your doing because it is making a difference [note: 🥺🥺😭]
• i often consider myself more as just aroace rather than aro and ace seperately so i prefer seeing the blue and orange aroace flag over the individual aro and ace flags
• I don't really shorten my identity often with aroace, only when im feeling very romance repulsed and its been a while since I felt romantic attraction. I am a pan-demiromantic asexual. My pan label makes me feel more connected to the lgbt+ community bc it feels like my nonbinary and intersex status doesn't count either. I know I belong in the queer community, but the lgbt+ community is so sexual orientation focused.
• Thank you for having a wide variety of labels to choose from in the options!! I don't see the term aegoromantic very often on things, it feels nice to be known I guess haha
• Thank you for this, i recently started thinking about being in arospec and it was so relieving, all this time i thought something was wrong or maybe i was broken. I'm still trying to learn more about it, and I'm grateful for people willing to teach and help
• didn't realize I hadn't experienced sexual attraction until I finally did and was like "OH, no wonder all my other relationships felt like I was playing pretend"
• I dont often tell people I'm gray aroace. Not because of shame or it not being "as important" (I'm a gay trans dude) but I think because I just feel its a very intimate part of myself, as well as my romanticism and sexuality (in terms of like asexuality) feeling as though it doesn't always need a label. I'm fine just being myself most of the time, a lot of labels can be tricky for myself I think. I'm happy the label exists nonetheless though because Its nice to know I'm not the only one who feels like this.
• I'm queer! But if I'm getting down to the bones of it, I'm pan/ace. Still relearning how to be proud of that, after The Grand Clusterfuck years back.
• even though I would be considered to have an alloromantic orientation, alloace isn't really a term I feel any strong connection or attachment to
• i'd like to add that i do consider myself alloaro and use that label openly but i'd also not consider myself 100% allosexual. i'm questioning my sexuality but even if i do end up feeling more solidly ace-spec i'd still use the alloaro label
• Idk who else does this or if this is interesting enough to write down, but I thought I would! I use Aroace as a label. Other, smaller labels inside that would probably fit me better! Aroace feels too big, like it doesn't *really* define exactly who I am. But at the same time, I prefer using it because more people know what Aroace means (at least compared to myrromantic and myrsexual). I use Aroace so the public can define me. I don't typically use it around my close friends 'cause they already know my idiosyncrasies and where I really am. They already made their own definitions for me, so I don't have to make one for them!
• I'm still figuring myself out, so I leave myself at the blanket terms and hopefully everything'll work out in the end
The rest of the responses are below:
Comments Alerting Me About Typos (that I was then able to resolve)
• There's a typo in your "sexual orientation labels" question, because you have Aroflux listed and not Aceflux, but I didn't want to confuse things so I put Aceflux (which I do use) under Other. I also am polysexual (I flux between polysexual and asexual but I am always aegosexual) but didn't know if I should but it under Other anywhere since it's not an acespec label. I consider my polysexuality tied to me being aego/aceflux though, which is why I mention it here.
• the sexual orientations options are the same of the romantic ones ( for example, there's arovague and arospike in the sexual cathegory)
People Clarifying/Expounding Upon Their Own Identity/Experiences
·  to clarify: i'm unsure whether or not i am demi or aceflux; so i use graysexual since both labels technically fall under that as an umbrella term.
• I’m still a confused gorl and I really only know that I don’t like sex it sexual acts but I do like romantic and sensual acts
• Sex/romance repulsed and I have aesthetic attraction
• I'm also animesexual and fictosexual (and romantic I guess but I don't like using the SAM for myself).
• I have never seen most of these labels, haha, I expect one of them is the one I always forget that's for being aro due to past trauma but people always assume it's romantic/sexual trauma so I don't use it and thus have forgotten it...but that's the essay I'm not usually up for writing: was biromantic but then had several awful life events on top of each other and had a complete breakdown and have been aro since. Unclear if it's permanent but it's been 14 years now. [note: I believe this person is thinking of caedromantic]
• I tend to use the word ace more than asexual because it's shorter, but I don't feel more favorably about one than the other.
• i can't tell the difference between platonic vs romantic attraction, and am unsure if people i have "liked" in the past was romantic, platonic, or a fake stemming from peer pressure.
• Also Gender-Neutral/Agender
• I’m gray-aro but identify more with being biromantic even though I know I’m aro-spec. As for sexual orientation, I’m just completely ace xD
• The fact I'm still trying to figure out my gender makes it harder to pinpoint exactly what my orientations are :( but I usually say I'm queer, and if it's safe: Bi Ace, and if I can get more specific: biromantic grey-asexual
• I also use a platonic label (biplatonic). I use it not in a friendship way, but more like in a QPR way.
• Thank you for doing this! My identity on the aro/ace spectrums has shifted a lot over the years and while I’ve just settled on aroace and queer for the most part, this community is so diverse and under appreciated. People who find joy in/identify with micro-identities are valid and deserve representation!
• I'm still figuring out my romantic orientation but it's looking less allo by the day lmao
• My romantic label is very fluid, but in terms of sexual labels, very sex repulsed Asexual
• Content with just Aspec cause it's difficult to pinpoint anything but cool with both asexual/ace and aromantic/aro
• I think of my romantic orientation as halfway between aromantic and homoromantic
• I'm a polyamorous ace, if there'd be a way to include that sometimes that'd be neat :)
• I am still questioning my identity
• I used to identify as 100% ace but now I have no idea other than that I seem to be pan-ace in some way shape or form so my identity is ???people???
• Sex/romance repulsed and I have aesthetic attraction
• to clarify: i'm unsure whether or not i am demi or aceflux; so i use graysexual since both labels technically fall under that as an umbrella term.
Queer Rights
• Trans rights, baybee 🤠🦂
• I just hope a-spec and aro-spec people will experience less negativity and hate this year <3
• Aspec rights!!
• aspec rights, baby

• love you, hope you have a great day
An A-Spec Person Being Rude to Other A-Specs
• If you enjoy sex with your romantic partner then you are not asexual
A Person Who Is Not A-Spec Being Rude To A-Specs
• sweetie im sorry that you're so insecure that you feel like you have to make up new identities to feel better about yourself. if you are a lesbian or bisexual please know that you are welcome in the community, but other than that making thousands of microlabels like this makes a huge joke out of what was once an important and respected group. nobody takes us seriously anymore because of this shit. does labelling your identity like this really help you with anything? demisexual and fraysexual and all this are just fancy words for normal human feelings that everyone has. there is no need to microlabel it.
Other
· [variations of “no” (12)]
• not sure that helps lmao but still hope it does. all the best
• Axolotls (or as I like to call them, asexulotls) are amazing and I love them [Note: the man in question]
• Sorry, I can't remember the names of any blogs that do edits
• Ok random but the colors of the aro/ace flag? The blue and orange one? They’re gorgeous.
• I'm not so sure if I should use the aroace flag, I feel comfortable using both aro and ace flags, but I don't like the colors for the aroace flag :c [note: these are in chronological order, it’s a total coincidence that these comments are together]
• Curious to see where the survey goes
• It would be cool if you could also do some aplatonic-spectrum edits!
• there were fully half of the terms on that list that i had never even seen before. like, everything below litho down to no label was entirely new to me. at some point i will look into those! (but not right now, my brain is full enough at the moment)
• actually had to look up the majority of these orientations. Thank you for the opportunity to learn!
• Gonna reblog and follow and hopefully learn a bit more, about others and myself
Note: The only comment that is not listed in order is the first comment, which I put at the top because I found it the most important. It’s so important that kids and teens have space to explore their identity and learn about themselves. The reason I made this blog in the first place was because I was 19 and working on figuring out my gender and sexuality. Now that I’m a bit older and understand things better, I’m so glad that I’m able to help people in this way.
I make it a point to be very openly queer in my life and at work because I need LGBTQ+ people, especially youths, to know that we’re here. I’m lucky that I live somewhere that I can be visibly queer and speak about it openly. We are everywhere, and there’s more of us than you think!
Something that I really like about the comments at the top is that they show how diverse we are, and how people use words differently. Some people feel like they’re more aroace than aromantic and asexual separately, and others consider their romantic and sexual orientations to be completely different things.
I definitely relate to the person who identifies are myrromantic and myrsexual with their friends but just says aroace when speaking with people they don’t know as well. I believe a lot of people use different words depending on who they’re speaking with.

You know what. I realized I cant fight with them. I wont win because they think theyre right no matter what. They already rook the words of the attackers over the victim so no use arguing with them. I deleted by reblog. I'll just continue to support gayherobrine on my own posts and theirs.
If you think gay_herobrine is lesphobic because they didnt include a lesbian parrot, unfollow me. They've literallt already made a lesbian cat. They arent excluding anyone but they had limited textures. And its /their/ peoject they can chose whatever flags they wanted. They tried to be as inclusive as possible even. They could have just done flags relevant to them. Which is also not exclusion they are simply supporting those groups.
As for their responses, they started out calm. Explaining their choices. Then they offered to commision the flag. (Why do people take this free stuff for granted? They dont owe you anything). Then they started to get tired. And heated. After multitudes of asks and messages. Many i'm sure we didnt see. Claiming lesbians were more opressed and deserved it more. That they were lesphobic because lesbians deserve inclusion in apparently every pride post ever.(cant include every group everytime guys. Sometimes a post supporting a few groups is fine! Weird right?). Going as far as to make SEPERATE posts calling them out as lesphobic (based on the original false claims!!) Because they got mad at these anons and shit!
Seriously. I never called anyone panphobic for not including my flag. For including us under the bi flag. Or the rainbow flag. I never called anyone out for making a post supporting lesbians and gays, because they didnt include me. Its not exclusion. They didnt say no lesbians. They actually included lesbians, under the true meaning of the rainbow flag.
Y'all just wanna start fights. I still think its exclusionists who started this. Someone supports ace or trans people?? Oh how long until they get called out on some bs claims?? Second popular blog I follow this has happened to this year. Think critically before just believing every callout post ever guys. Maybe actually fucking go look at the blog too. You'd see their other pride posts(that included lesbians) and maybe even their new project. (Which also includes lesbians. It was one of the first flags they did actually).
Sorry if I sound mad. This mineblr as far as I've seen, is a good person. Theyve been veey inclusive of all pride groups. And this new war against them is unfair and cruel. And to see people on my dash supporting the false claims against them makes me want to cry. Half of the argument too is they should have included the lesbian flag instead of one of the others. Like my flag. Apparently supporting pan people is a cancellable offence now. ;_; C'mon guys. Just think before you reblog please. And if after all of this you still think gay_herobrine is lesphobic... You night as well block me. Because I dont want to be around that type of person.

Sapphic Solidarity Flag as designed by me, January 2019
[Image description: a flag with three vertical stripes. All of them are of the same width. From left to right the colours are violet, a lighter rose, and a magenta-pink.]
Are there thousands of flags yet? yes. Am I sorry for creating another one? no, although I did hesitate.
Background: I myself currently identify as Bi, but most of last year I’ve been questioning if the label even fits me or if I’m actually a lesbian. I started following several wlw blogs and they all helped a lot. On top of that a good friend of mine came out as a trans woman to me and we found a lot of comfort in each other during last year. I am so thankful for this community and for everyone who helped me figuring this out. During all this I learned how important the solidarity and support for one another is in this community, but I also saw a lot of intra community disagreements or even bigotry. So I got this idea for a flag like this. One that celebrates all wlw, that stands for the support and solidarity, and is explicitly including trans women, always.
About the design:
It features the colour purple/violet for lesbians, the light shade of pink from the transgender flag, and a slightly less saturated bold pink from the bi flag. (Less saturated so it doesn’t clash with the other two colours)
I chose 3 colours because it makes the design easier to remember, also a design of 3 looks more balanced & harmonic in this case
at first I had the stripes in the common horizontal fashion, but then I thought that I’d prefer them to stand equally next to another. Additionally it makes the flag stand out in the sea of horizontally striped flags.
not only do I prefer the look of the transgender flag pink in the middle, it also has a meaning for me: per design it is 100% included and there to stay.
Who’s represented with that flag? Who can use it? (before anyone asks)
lesbians, no matter if butch, femme, bambi, ...
trans women, no matter what their orientation is.
wlw who are attracted to multiple genders (bi, pan, poly are all summarised under the stripe of the bi pink)
I know that people who ID as wlw/sapphic can have a difficult relationship with gender, so of course it includes NB people/people who fall under the NB umbrella.
questioning wlw. Labels can be difficult and we’re here to support & uplift one another
If you’re ace/aro and ID as lesbian, bi/pan/poly, are a trans woman or generally go by sapphic/wlw, then you’re included too of course.
you are any of the above and want to express your love and support for the others represented in this flag. This flag is supposed to be a direct statement against hate & bigotry.
Who cannot use it?
Transphobes, Terfs, Truscum, Transmeds
lesbophobes & biphobes
racist folks
generally: if you discriminate based on gender, orientation, ethnicity & race, religious believes, disabilities, class, ... I need you to better yourself. Until then this flag isn’t for you.
cis people who are not wlw
you’re a MAP
Additional notes (because this is the internet):
This isn’t anti gay/bi/trans men. This is not supposed to be a new, seperate community, instead it is about strengthening the wlw parts of the community and about the rejection of intra community transphobia. It is a symbol for the solidarity and respect I wish to become the future for the whole LGBT+ community. We’re the strongest when we work together.
While cis non-wlw women are not included in this flag it doesn’t mean we don’t care about them. Feminism is deeply rooted with sapphic and trans women, and we sure as hell won’t make exceptions when it comes to our feminism.
This flag is about love, compassion, support, solidarity, respect, united strength and acceptance. We stand up for another and won’t tolerate hate against any of us.

like do i think a 30 something cis aspec het whose worst deviation from normative straightness is only ever crushing on fictional characters with deep buttery baritones is going to have a lot to say in complex intercommunity discussions of homophobia or transphobia? probably not but like... otherwise... who gives a shit oh my GOD. even if u think her experiences with being aspec are caused just by misogyny... AS A LESBIAN I LOVE BITCHING ABOUT MISOGYNY. HALF OF WHAT I DO AS A LESBIAN IS BITCHING ABOUT THE SPICY MISOGYNY I FACE BECAUSE OF WHO I AM AND AM NOT ATTRACTED TO. SHE SOUNDS LIKE MY TYPE OF GAL. i really don’t give two shits whether she considers herself part of the lgbt, part of some seperate aspec community because as an arospec bitch whos been in non-aromantic lesbian communities all my life i think it might be for their own good not to fight for the right to Not be in certain relationships in the same community as a bunch of people fighting for the right to Be in certain relationships, or whether she just considers herself a spicy cishet. if she wants to start acting like iding strictly with her agab and being only attracted to men doesn’t give her privilege over gay and trans people? then i have a problem but otherwise like. who cares that much about pride flag toting strangers on the internet.

How to Fix A Drug Scandal (2020)
6/10 - Interesting enough that I watched the whole thing, but not so much that I'd recommend it. The actual documentary is okay and they do a good job, but the story really got me thinking about what makes a drug addict, the powerful role addiction plays in our society, and white privilege.
How to Fix a Drug Scandal is a documentary, done in 4 parts, following two consecutive incidences of misconduct that occurred seperately, in Massachusetts' two evidence-processing drug labs. The primary story is about a young women, Sonja Farak, a great student and athlete with a promising future and a happy family, who graduates UMass with a degree in chemistry. She gets a job working at the state's drug lab in Boston right out of college. She enjoys the job, but hates the cost of living, so she is happy when she is approved to be transferred to the state's other, smaller lab out in Amherst, which processes all the drug evidence for Western Mass. In the Amherst lab, things are much more laid back. There are only a handful of people who work there, and the chemists are mostly unsupervised. One time, when she is alone in the lab, Farak decides to try a little bit of the pure methamphetamine that the chemist use as a standard. In her confession, she says she does it because, as an undergraduate, she had been depressed and had done a lot of research into recreational drugs. Farak thought back then, if she could try any drug, it would be meth, so when the opportunity arose, Farak thought it couldn't hurt to try.
I think now it is appropriate to mention that Farak is gay. She is visibility butch in appearance, an athlete type, and the documentary mentions she has a long term girlfriend from college who moved with her to Amherst. Perhaps the queerness of the area was another reason she was happy to go to Amherst. Perhaps she also hoped for less supervision, a chance alone with the drugs. It's funny how we can have so much: intelligence, an education, physical health, family support, a partner, a job; and still be so sad. It's true of all people, but especially with queers. A lot of modern white queers, and white women, live their lives in resentment of the privilege they thought they were promised, but fell they never fully obtain. This is partially because the world is changing: white millennials and zoomers are not inheriting the economy their parents had, they're getting something much different. As a young white women raised in a liberal Massachusetts town, just like Farak, I was told I could use my intelligence and girl boss energy to get anything I wanted, but that's actually not true. As queer people, especially queer women, it becomes even harder to catch the privilege that comes off the coat tails of cishet white men. As white people, we often act very immature because of this angst. Many white cis gays are so ready to throw black people, trans women and gnc lesbians out of their community if it means more privilege for them. Closeted, passing gay men have been doing this in Western society for centuries. Many white lesbians are ready to forget about black and indigenous people and trans folks in order to advance their ideas of feminism.
We never learn about what happened between Farak and her girlfriend. Was it trouble at home that drove her to try the drugs? Her family is interviewed for the piece, and they seem very ordinary, supportive, and compassionate for Farak. The girlfriend is not interviewed. How long did they live together before she found out about Farak's drug usage? Was she using too? Did she try to make it work or did she leave immediately? I respect her decision not to talk -- I wouldn't either -- but I am still curious. Perhaps, simply a life of feeling like you don't belong manifested as a deep depression, something that drove Farak to drugs. Perhaps it had nothing to do with her queerness.
Farak moves from meth to other standards, and eventually she starts taking drugs from large evidence hauls. At first, she claims the drugs helped her do the menial task of testings, helped keep her hyper-focused and moving fast. Eventually, she was leaving the lab multiple times a day to smoke crack, and she had long ago gotten sloppy and started doing suspicious things. Obviously, she looked horrible, but she claimed she was having health problems.
When they find her crack pipe, law enforcement attempt to bring justice down quickly. She signs a plea deal and gets a relatively short sentence. A couple of months worth of cases are thrown out, but some defense lawyers are suspicious. They believe more cases should be thrown out, since it was likely that Farak had been using for several years - she has, and eventually evidence that police tried to hide, shows this. The documentary spends a lot of time exploring this and what it means for the justice system as a whole. Farak doesn't believe she messed up all the cases. In fact, she believes in the justice system pretty full and naively (more evidence that queer =/= progressive). She claims that if evidence was sent to her, it was probably really drugs, and if she messed up a test, the accused should know and request a retest. There's a little truth in this: yes, most of the samples sent to the drug lab were probably real drugs, but police also make mistakes and are corrupt, so definitely not all the samples were illegal. It should be obvious that the drug labs are a line of defense to help people remain innocent until proven guilty, and it's so selfish and privileged of Farak to care so little about the lives of people who are targeted by the police. She shows no empathy for fellow addicts or families torn apart by carceral justice, poverty, and addiction.
The state had Farak sign a plea deal, hoping to brush the extent of her misconduct under the rug as to limit the repercussion for the prosecutors, who would have to re-try all the cases Farak was involved in without the drug lab evidence. Without that evidence, tens of thousands of people could be set free -- and eventually, 24,000 were. On top of this scandal, the state was just recovering from a scandal that happened in the Boston drug lab only a few months prior. A star chemist there, Dookhan, who had for years been churning out more tests than any other employee, was found to have been faking results to get ahead in her career and forge relationships with the prosecution. The documentary doesn't talk much about Dookhan. She doesn't have a drug problem. She came to America at a young age, graduated UMass Boston with a B.S., and was divorced with a son. She chronically lied about her resume and her personal life. Her misconduct led to the release of over 20,000 offenders. Apparently her supervisors had ignored many red flags, like frequent simple mistakes and impossible speed. Her co-workers had been complaining about her for a while before a probe was launched that ultimately uncovered her wrong-doings.
Farak's case was similar: there were red flags, although smaller, that were ignored. At the Amherst lab, however, people were less concerned with Farak's work. The lab was underfunded, in disrepair, and inundated with cases. No one cared what Farak did as long as her work got done. There was no one to supervise her and no one that objected to her working her own hours. Perhaps then, it wasn't her queerness that pushed her to drug addiction, but the tediousness of a job that pays poorly but demands specialty, carefulness, and long hours. Perhaps it was merely a crime of opportunity: she should never have been alone in that lab, it was totally against protocol, but still, a common occurrence.
The documentary, obviously, never, as it cannot, identifies the reason why Farak became a drug addict. It could be anything: relationship troubles, alienation related to queerness, capitalism, or simply genetics. All we know is that Farak was sad and vulnerable when she first took those drugs, and the problem snowballed. Neither, can we diagnose Dookhan with a personality disorder that caused her to be a compulsive liar with little empathy, although it is likely linked to trauma and genetics, just like Farak. We could make reccomendations to fix the justice system, but the problems are way bigger than two drug labs in Massachusetts. The justice system is shaped by white supremacy (ex. majority white judges and high carceral rates for black and brown communities) and capitalism (ex. prison industrial complex), the same forces that allowed for the scandals to go on for so long and that pushed these people into addiction and other mental health issues. The same forces pushed the state to cover up the extent of this misconduct.
In a lot of ways the story goes full circle, and in that way, it is a very interesting case. As I grew up in Massachusetts, I am interested in stories that are based there and how they are shaped by social norms there and in turn, shape social norms there. This story really highlights the class difference in Mass, the divide between the professionals and the criminals, is not a moral one, not an issue of intelligence, assiduousness, or hard work.
