you had just gotten gotten into hudol, and sure it was no adventuring academy but you worked hard to get in. did you stay up (partly because you have never been able to take a long rest) to study for that entrance exam? did kristen put her hands on you shoulders, casting bless on you as a gentle reassurase that you were going to do great on the exam, and you did. you got in. a clone in a prestigious college full of wizards and sorcerers, a cleric surrounded by nothing religious. did you start feeling homesick already, knowing you were going to be gone from your creator, from the reason you exist and her friends?

you started making friends of your own, forging your own identity as you did. then you started feeling sick and you thought “shit i might be pregnant.” every test you try and take comes out positive, and despite the anxiety and uncertainty of the future you go to a party because your possible baby daddy might be there aswell as all of his friends. you go and be supportive, the boat gets rocked and takes to the skies, and you climb up on deck, watching the corrupted cloud form of your goddess. you watch your source of origin struggle to make a connection, struggle to save you all..so you step forward.

I think that before Kenny would keep it pretty chill and just encourage Kyle to have some cake and live a little. He'd sprinkle in a (flirtatious) compliment in there but it's subtle, because I think he'd prob hold back on his feelings yet yanno. Unless Kyle's having a really shit birthday lol.

I always love the idea of him working extra or doing extra things to scrape up a bit of extra cash for a gift though.

When they're together I could totally see him getting really in his head and stressed about getting Kyle something extra nice because a Good Gift costs some fucking money and he's gotta make it good. And honestly, if he really wanted to put his mind to it, I think he could make something too, but I don't think it'd be his first choice lol.

Though I do have a soft spot for it being a handmade gift lol... I have a drawing idea for that one.

Idk about the whole K2 thing, sure it was silly, and we may have missed some characterization bc of the bit, but tabletop as a medium will inherently produce things like this. Fully fleshed out plot, arc, and characterization is hard to pull off 100% of the time in an improv based medium like this imo

i've gotten so many asks like this, that boil down to "you shouldn't criticize the events of the finale because xyz". this one is the most polite but is also my breaking point, so unfortunately it's yours i'll be going off on.

i fucking know that that's part of the medium. of course i know and respect that. where did i say that i don't?

more importantly, though, why do you and everyone else who has sent these messages think that we shouldn't talk about the unique aspects of a medium and the things it leads to that we dislike?

i'll also criticize movies for not spending as much time as i'd like on certain things. but that's how it is sometimes, with the limit of the length of a movie. i don't think i'd get this many goddamn people up in arms in my inbox about it.

the energy i've gotten from some people is similar to what i got for saying that matt's dm style isn't my cup of tea during ravening war.

this idea that you can't love a show and dislike parts of it, or that if you do dislike parts of it, you shouldn't talk about that, is fucking ridiculous.

touch grass and accept that people don't have to like everything all of the time, nor do they have to write an essay of nuance about the nature of ttrpg actual plays every time they voice a less than glowing opinion.

finally finished the season and was curious if you had any thoughts on the junior year finale?

Yes! I watched it when it came out and I'm kind of bad at remembering what happens in shows, haha, but I do have some thoughts (these will probably be more "entire season" thoughts rather than JUST the finale thoughts).

Overall, I really enjoyed this season. It was really funny, and maybe one of the seasons I laughed at the most, and since I view Dimension 20 as a comedy show first, that's a big selling point to me.

I don't know how I feel about the down time mechanic. On the one hand, I think it's the only way they could have done this season, since it seemed like they were pretty set on it taking the whole year. On the other hand, there were quite a few rolls that Brennan said we'd come back to that I don't think were fully addressed (I could be wrong about how many, I'd have to go back and re-watch.) When they first introduced the mechanic, I thought it was basically a way for time to quickly pass while establishing how the school year was going, so each roll wouldn't involve too many scenes or roleplay, which I thought was smart. But then they did involve a ton of scenes and roleplay! So I have mixed feelings.

Similarly, it did feel like some things that could have been fun were underexplored because there was SO much jammed into this season, plot-wise. That's partially the medium of Actual Play, and partially being ambitious with how much they included. I love the idea of character foils or "dark reflections" of characters, and I wish we would have gotten a little more time with the Rat Grinders. We ended with a lot of implications about them, but I kind of wish there would have been a "this is what happened with them exactly" kind of moment. I guess they were all killed by Porter while on an adventure? Maybe I'm forgetting stuff and there was a more clear answer. I'm usually playing Power Wash Simulator while I'm watching Dimension 20 so sometimes I miss things.

Specific finale stuff! Gorgug and Unit and Gorgug and Mary Ann were both so funny. Zac is one of the funniest people alive. Brennan cannot keep his NPCs from flirting with Zac, and Zac cannot say no to a funny bit. I thiiiiink the finale was also the "Say it don't spray it" moment, which was incredible. Murph using Hold Person to take out Kipperlily was great, so tactical, so timely.

Maybe this is an unpopular opinion but I think the finale episode retroactively made the infamous "blimey" moment less funny. I wish Brennan wouldn't have gone back on having K2 destroyed. His rationale was that she actually did have access to Divine Intervention but also he gave advantage on the roll which isn't how the ability works, so I think having K2 be destroyed was fair and also really funny.

I was a little underwhelmed by the Bad Kids reactions to Ankarna's scenes with each of them. It felt like none of them knew exactly what was going on, and even though they had some good character moments, it felt muddled and I wasn't sure what was supposed to happen or honestly even what *did* happen there.

I liked Buddy's new god and Kalina showing up. I don't think she's evil, I think she just knows that Ankarna wants to kill her, so she's hitching her wagon on a new star.

Brennan said something during the final Adventuring Party about how if people would have laughed more at Gilear saying they were getting a dog that Fabian's mom wouldn't have been pregnant, which confirms something I've always thought! Obviously a lot of Dimension 20 is planned in advance because of the sets, but I've always felt like sometimes when things don't make sense it's because they decide something on the fly because it's funny. Even Porter being evil was decided because it would be funny (although that obviously wasn't decided on the fly). It makes sense why sometimes the pacing and plot of the shows are a little weird, because they're actual plays, and they're comedic APs at that. It's kind of heartwarming that it seems like even though they're making a show, they're all mostly just trying to make each other laugh, because if they make each other laugh, it'll probably make the audience laugh too.

Cassian’s head pounded the whole ride back to base. A trooper had cracked him over the skull with the butt of a rifle, nearly rendering him unconscious and leaving him with a rather prominent purpling welt. Everything after that was blurry and muddled in his mind. The combat he scrambled through, the bodies lining the halls— all of it had clouded black edges when he tried to recall it. The full picture never coming back to him at once.

Jyn lay beside him on a stretcher on the floor. Cassian had extended his leg against her side to keep her steady as the ship jostled wildly, barely being held together as it limped back to base with the rest of them on board.

Jyn was sporting a similar knot to Cassian’s, but hers was in the very center of her forehead. She held it together like she always did when the stakes were high, but her vision had gone black as they retreated to the ship. K2 scooped her up without missing a beat, catching her before she even hit the ground.

Cassian had a firm hand on her shoulder. He told himself it was to hold her head still as the craft rattled loudly, but a good portion of him wanted to feel her, to be near her. He pressed the back of one of his fingers firmly against her throat, keeping count of her heartbeats. They were steady, but he would be the first to know if that changed.

In the medbay, they carted her off with no great urgency. Cassian assumed it was a concussion, nothing more serious, and that she would be awake soon.

He knew that, and still he worried. Still he hung in the halls after he was cleared and discharged. Still he asked to see her once she was in a recovery room.

He thought about knocking to announce himself, but worried that the sharp sound might irritate her head even more.

He slid the door open and crept in, being careful to shift his weight so as not to make too much noise with his boots. The lights were dimmed, and Jyn looked rather pitiful in one of the orange medbay gowns. Strands of hair stuck out every which way like they didn’t even bother to smooth them back into place after examining her.

Across her cheek was a gash with a sickly green bruise around it, and her arm was sporting an IV tube with a pale yellow liquid dripping into it.

“They said I look like I don’t drink enough water,” she said with a gravelly voice.

Cassian chuckled and stood at the side of her bed with his hands clasped awkwardly behind him. The mission today wasn’t the only thing cloudy in his mind. The tightness in his chest when she was struck, the tremble of his hands while they skidded into in the hanger— he didn’t know if she even wanted him here right now.

Was he there as her partner or as more than that.

“You can sit,” she patted the bed clumsily.

“Are they giving you anything for pain?” he asked.

Jyn nodded dopily.

That explained her causal demeanor. She wasn’t her normal sharp self.

“They’re keeping me overnight for observation,” she slurred through the last word.

“Do you feel alright?” an air of concern in his voice.

“Just tired.”

Cassian nodded, rising slowly so as not to jostle her.

“I should let you rest.”

Her hand shot out and grazed his fingertips.

“Don’t leave.”

Her voice sounded smaller than it ever had before.

“Okay,” he whispered.

So I floated the idea to my D&D group that in future when some people are missing and we can't run a game we could do one shots. I SPECIFICALLY had in mind that I could run a Fantasy High one shot.

The plan is to set it in basically a wiped-clean version of the Junior Year set up. So everything is the same, with all those great NPCs, but none of the current campaign events are happening. The tricky thing is that you need Aguefort to be kind of around-but-not so he's there if you need the help (and because he's the NPC of all time) but you have a reason why he isn't solving every problem. I figured I'd have him go on vacation like in the actual show, but leave behind a semi-functioning simulacrum of himself that would act more like a video game NPC most of the time with limited and repeating dialogue and odd(er than usual) behaviours. This was before K2 in the show so I'm DELIGHTED by how that's backed up my plan.

In any case, long story short, this entire plan has now become a straight up mission to work in a reference to Aguefort testing positive on pregnancy tests.

🟠= Restoring the Star League. It was by no means the perfect society, but it did lead to centuries of effective peace and cooperation among humankind. It was the ultimate goal of the Great Father, and one we now can bring to reality - and I have been honored to begin the military side of the process. I am the new commanding officer of a revived Royal Black Watch, will be running the new Gunslinger program and the first new Martial Olympiad, and apparently am on track to become the first Commanding General of the SLDF since Hohiro Kurita in the 3060s. To eventually take on the same position as the Great Father held... is an honor I can barely believe may be in my future. 💰= By far, the worst purchase I have made was the giant inflatable bouncy castle version of a Dire Wolf I purchased for Damien Caruso's fifth birthday. He was the son of the leader of Fursona's Fusiliers, Savannah Caruso. I had thought the purchase would enliven the party. It did. To the tune of at least ten injuries when we adult mercenaries decided to partake as well. And it turns out talons do not mix well with what is essentially a thin, continuously pumped balloon. Making, and subsequently having to see, Damien cry... was perhaps the worst crime I have ever committed. He didn't speak to his "Aunt Mysty" for two weeks afterwards. I felt horrible. ⛓️= I have taken several. The best, the one I miss the most, was Victoria. Victoria Jade Falcon, formerly Victoria Espinosa of the Aurigan Directorate.

I met Victoria in the course of the Aurigan Civil War; her actions in that war would later see her to be known as the Butcher of Perdition. We defeated her several times in that campaign. The first few times she was in her Catapult-K2, until Savannah took it out with a point blank Thumper shot from her Bull Shark.

Victoria survived that Thumper shot, incredibly. She faced us one more on Coromodir, at the hands of a modified King Crab. We took her prisoner, after she came to her senses - once her 'Mech was disabled, and the rest of her lance were dead.

As I fired the shot which disabled her 'Mech, I was allowed to claim her as a bondswoman, though I had to wait until 3050, once her prison sentence in the Taurian Concordat was carried out.

She served well as a bondswoman, and I freed her in relatively short order, during the latter stages of the Invasion. She soon after passed her Trial of Position and became abthaka, joining a second-line unit.

I have been told that she died defending the civilians of São Paulo, during the final battles of the Jihad on Terra. Apparently her last words were expressing a hope she had redeemed herself for what she had done on Perdition, all those decades before, and taking a Manei Domini Heavy Level III with her in the process.

Considering she ended up saving nearly 30,000 people with her sacrifice, I would say she redeemed herself... The Butcher of Perdition died that day, and the Savior of São Paulo was born...

I do miss her. 📚= I am a direct descendant of Elizabeth Hazen (not in the usual sense of her passing on genes used by the next in line, but directly via the original genetic samples she provided) - and also of Turkina herself. I pride myself on that heritage, and try to live up to it. Having the sword that one of my genemothers gave to the other helps me remember. Furthermore, I am a fan of the Great Father (moreso than of his son, the Founder), and of his SLDF our Clans descend from. I try to uphold the Great Father's ideals every day of my life. Lastly, I have always identified with the Royal Black Watch, of which Elizabeth Hazen was a part. I was enamored with the tales of their last stand at Gorst Flats, their campaigns against Amaris, and how, even after being hit with thermonuclear ordnance, the Black Watch survived, and did not give up.

Hey hey I would love it if you explained what you meant by "playing with the kid gloves" this season, I'm a full rat-grinders-should-get-redemption and a kipperlily's-only-fault-is-her-being-jealous-that-KVX-killed-riz's-dad truther [shows ID card] (I get it if you want to answer this privately, I feel like this could ruffle some feathers)

So, I want to make it clear: I'm not a D&D player. I've watched quite a few D20 seasons, so I like to think I have some understanding of what makes combat challenging. But I'm definitely not an expert on this, so if anything I say is wrong, I welcome corrections.

All that said... it doesn't feel like Brennan is challenging the IH's to me. It feels like he is bending over backwards to accommodate 'rule of cool/rule of fun'. Which is fine enough for a home game. But this is a narrative show that people pay money to watch.

The most egregious example, I feel, is the fact that Brennan allowed them to take that short rest. When they crashed Seacaster Manor right by the gym, Brennan tells them that any enemy forces would have definitely spotted them. Because, duh. They didn't exactly stealth in. They landed a huge boat right in front of the boss battle.

But this has... zero narrative consequences. They're allowed to take a short rest and recover spell slots and fuck around with Ice Feast, and the Conspiracy has known that they are there the entire time. Like they're a video game boss, waiting for the Bad Kids to Press A To Start Boss Fight.

I just find that ridiculous. I think that there needed to be much heavier consequences to taking that short rest (Kipperlilly stealthed into the hut and stole the votes, they had an extra hour to prepare and set booby traps, literally ANYTHING.)

Speaking of that... Ice Feast completely undercut the biggest threat of this fight, that being the stunned condition. I do not blame Ally for using the spell, to be clear. It's almost comically made to nerf this boss fight, and them using it was an extremely smart move. I blame Brennan a) for making the spell that overpowered tbh and b) allowing it to even happen.

Because again. The town is in chaos. A rage ritual is about to start. They should need to get their ass over to the gym and get stuff done. Not fuck around and eat snowcones by...

K2!! Why the fuck was she allowed to be brought back! It completely undercuts any narrative impact of Blimeygate. It just feels cheap to me. The whole "she's actually like a sister to Kristen" thing feels so extremely "told and not shown" to me.

And now we have two insanely competent healers. And there's another thing:

I don't think Kristen should have all her spell slots to begin with. I just... I get that Kristen did some meaningful miracles. But I just don't think that a Cleric should be able to function so competently when her Goddess is literally trapped in supermegagayhell. I think she shouldn't have regained her spells at all, or at the very least, not all of them. Which is... harsh, obviously. But I feel like Cassandra's narrative is cheapened by the fact Kristen is all fine now.

Obviously, I'd want Brennan and Ally to work together on some sort of multi-class / homebrew in order to make Kristen not just a sitting duck during battles. It'd be ridiculously unfun and unfair if Kristen Couldn't Do Anything. But I don't think she should be functioning in the way she used to - let alone having TWO of her do that.

I think those are my main gripes...? I'm probably missing some, haha. But yeah. It feels like the party got to do Everything They Wanted with No Narrative Consequences, and I think that makes for a bad finale.
