How Long Does It Take To Date A Werewolf?
300 Seconds to Find and Fight Kalpas
A Werewolf!Kalpas x Hunter!Reader fic, chapter 4 below!
It only took a day to get back to the small town. Since you were the strongest in your little group, you ended up carrying Kalpas on your back the whole way there. Madikis took your pack, and Kailah apologized for not thinking this through every ten seconds. At least you only had to travel a short way to the town and not all the way back.
Inside the gates you were greeted by the same old man you met last time. Despite you dragging in the werewolf that destroyed his village, he was shockingly nice, and vouched for you all when the innkeeper didn’t want to give you rooms. In addition to paying for the stay (thank you Fire Moth) you and Kailah would help the town get cleaned up, while Madikis would stay and guard Kalpas just in case, since he needed to save his energy.
At night, he and Kailah shared a room, meaning Kalpas was sleeping on the floor in a room with you. Every morning, Kailah would administer the potion to keep him unconscious, and you’d be worried about how long he’d been out for if you didn’t know he was a werewolf. Things were going fine, until he woke up.
It was the middle of the night. You had just rolled over when you felt that something was wrong. Instinct was what kept you alive this long, so you sat up and pulled your dagger from under your pillow. The first thing you saw was a pair of eyes reflecting the moonlight that shone through the window.
You weren’t foolish enough to keep a werewolf in your room during a full moon, but the fact that he was awake at all was unnerving. The clanking of chains set you in motion, swiftly climbing out of bed and grabbing your sword without taking your eyes off him. Kalpas shifted again, sending your heart into your throat, but he didn’t make a move to stand. If anything, he sunk further down the wall he was propped up against.
He growled and it startled you so much you nearly dropped your blades, but his words made you replace that fear with anger. “I didn’t expect to be beaten by such a coward,” he spat out and you wished you could stab him. Gathering your wits, you edged towards the door, the whole time those wolf eyes never once left you, and as soon as you were through the door, you bolted.
“Kailah!” you whispered, shaking her awake. She let out a yelp that must’ve woken Madikis, because the room was suddenly bathed in light, making you squint. “Kailah, get up. He’s awake!” That got her moving, and a few seconds later, you were back in your room. Kalpas was still leaning against the wall, but his eyes were closed now.
“Are you sure he’s awake?” Kailah whispered.
“Yes!” you whispered back, though it wasn’t very quiet. Slowly, you both moved towards the wolf, but received no reaction.
“Maybe it was just a nightmare,” you sent Kailah a glare at her comment, but she continued while rubbing her eye sleepily . “Madikis said it should only be one more day. Two nights, including this one.”
“All he needs,” you jabbed a finger at Kalpas, “is two seconds to kill me.” Kailah just shook her head as though you were being overdramatic.
“Even if he did wake up, he’d have too much of the potion in his system to do anything.” With that, she left and despite your best efforts, you spent the next four hours—yes, you counted—unable to sleep.
Just as Kailah said, two days later at dawn, the four of you met outside the village gates. She and Madikis were holding hands, and you couldn’t help but roll your eyes at them. Twenty seconds of very queasy counting later, you were in front of the Fire Moth fortress. It took four seconds for the guards to surround you, and another thirty for Kailah to talk them down. They invited you all inside, but you shook your head and unceremoniously dropped Kalpas face first to the ground.
“I expect my pay within the week,” you waved over your shoulder and left, heading home.
Your gold came with a letter from Kailah. At first you frowned, expecting it to be another Fire Moth request, but it turned out to be a personal message. Even though it hadn’t been under the best circumstances, she was happy to meet you and hoped to stay in touch with you through letters. With a smile, you started writing her a letter back, but she came in person before you could send it.
She and Madikis showed up in the middle of your town—holding hands of course—and both looking a bit sheepish.
“We lost Kalpas again.”
Of course they had.
“But he went through the surgery for a second time, so he shouldn’t be as bad!”
Again? You’d feel bad for the guy if he hadn’t tried to kill you less than a month ago.
“So you want me to find him again?” They both nodded in response to your question. Shifting your weight to your hip, you thought about it for a moment. “You’re coming along?” The question was pointed at Kailah but Madikis responded.
“Yep!” His usual grin was back.
Raising an eyebrow you asked, “you with Fire Moth now?” There was still no insignia on his robe, but that could just mean he didn’t want to cause trouble when entering your very anti-Fire Moth town.
“Nah, I was just with Kailah when she got the mission and decided to tag along.”
“When was the last time you weren’t with Kailah,” you asked, but neither party seemed to hear. “Do you have any ideas as to where he is?”
“He’s only been missing for a day, so he can’t have gotten far. Other than that? Nope!” Kailah shrugged making you sigh again.
“Let me go pack,” you grumbled, but the two seemed to be in their own world, so you doubted they would notice your absence.
An hour later, you found them sitting on a bench cooing at each other. “You guys are disgustingly sweet,” your jab earned you some more giggles, so you decided to leave before you strangled one of them.
At lunch, you still hadn’t found any scorch or claw marks, so you assumed the day would be rather uneventful. You should’ve known fate loved nothing more than to mess with people.
The crushing of branches alerted you to the attack, and you were on your feet in a second. Kailah remained crouched by the fire where she had been cooking, with her eyes wide, and a concerned look on her face. Madikis stood protectively in front of her, invisible strands of magic already gathering around him in preparation.
Kalpas entered the clearing and paused for half a second when he saw you before focusing solely on your friends. He was much slower than he had been the first time you fought, though still insanely fast, like most werewolves. As soon as his attention was off of you, however, your cross was brought down into the ground, and he didn’t even take two steps before he was bound.
Just like last time, he continued snarling and pulling against the chains, but the force behind his tugs was much weaker and you had no problem holding him back. Kailah scrambled to get the potion, and you administered it while avoiding the snapping jaws. In the span of five minutes, Kalpas had been found and subdued. All in all? The mission had gone surprisingly well. After lunch, Madikis took himself and the two MOTHs back to their base, and you started the short walk home.
I don't know why these chapters are so much shorter (this one in particular), but uh here you go!
