I have a question: what made you completely change Pyrrha?
I know she dies in this AU but why change her personality if she is going to die still?
This is going to be a bit hefty. I've explained my issues with canon Pyrrha a bit before but I'm always willing to do it again so I hope this makes things relatively clear:
When volume 1 of RWBY was still airing, I used to tell anyone that would listen that I believed Pyrrha would either die or go through a villain corruption arc. I told people this not because something was setting it up, but because Pyrrha in canon has a personality that embodies the dead wives you see in videos husbands play. They're characters made not to be characters, but to be missed. To be loved and adored by the audience without the creator going in and giving them flaws or traits that make them anything more than a concept to be revered.
It's like the writers didn't trust that the audience could miss or mourn a character who wasn't completely perfect. They seemed so afraid of making her controversial that they barely made her at all. Canon pyrrha doesn't exists outside of Jaune and what she can do for other characters until volume 3. We don't start getting a pyrrha arc until barely a handful of episodes before she's killed off. And after she's gone she's almost never brought up in a context that doesn't include Jaune in some way. Volume 4 has JNR and Ruby traveling together but outside of Jaune's grief we get no hints or indication of the rest of the group dealing with the grief of her passing or avoiding the topic as they pretend they've moved on.
I don't even hate characters like Pyrrha, when handled well it can be a good way to add an emotional center to a characters story. But pyrrha is an actual character we know for 3 volumes who is supposed to feel like her own person with hopes and dreams.
I want her to be human. To be someone flawed and messy that is still growing because she's a person who can change. I want her to exist beyond this idea of being in service to others and instead exist with the idea that because she's been raised to believe she's so fantastic by everyone that she's started to believe it and it's negatively shaped her image of others and how she can connect to them. It gives her a character arc that can then be interrupted by the maiden, while also maybe giving us a reason that Ozpin wasn't immediately willing to speak to Pyrrha about them.
There's also the fact that she's based on Achilles but her personality lends much better to a Joan of arc type (Jaune) than to a demigod known for feats of brutality. There are countless stories floating around of Achilles being horrific and cruel, yet outside of her semblance, skill in combat, and visual inspiration drawn from ancient Greek armor, the writers don't really show any evidence Pyrrha is based on Achilles.
To me her being imperfect and unlikable, only to be killed before she fully grows and changes is far more tragic. Someone with the capacity to be a better version of themselves never getting to grow into it but clearly trying to do so. It would also add emphasis to the fact that Pyrrha was a child when she died, she was 17 maybe 18 if we're being generous. That's so young.
TL;DR: canon pyrrha felt like the writers were shoving a character at us and telling us to love her/miss her then tying her to a man she'd never be separate from.

Heya! Here for the match up thingamajig :) ty for doing this, it sounds really fun. go through this in your own time, i know these asks get long 👍🏽 i'll try to provide some useful information here lol Hm. Ok I get two of the mbti personalities on repeat everytime i take the quiz, either INTP (logician) or ISFJ (defender). Right now, it's ISFJ, though I'm able to speak my mind well enough. Idk what my enneagram type is. My friends have called me loyal, stubborn and strong on multiple occasions. Also that I have a "spine of iron", and I take pride in that. I'm the one in the party that pulls everyone in to dance. I love parties, booze or no booze. I'm a social introvert, if that makes sense. I'm good with a crowd but I don't make friends easy. I'm restless sometimes, it manifests as zoomies and tons and tons of art. I've even made art for the fandom :)
As for the song, I've had Rigamarole by ROZET on loop for a while now. Specifically the chorus, "' 'Cause I ain't satisfied, you ain't satisfied, You know I can't lie, You know I'm bored out of my mind, 'Cause I ain't satisfied, you ain't satisfied, Same thing, new day, man, I'd rather die."
My imaginary friend was the guy that leaped over buildings alongside the car :) more than just picturing him running along the ride, i used to pretend he was real and make conversation.
I like my name, but if I had to change it, it'd be Surya. The hindu god of the sun. I've always kind of taken the celestial body as an example for what I should do. To keep burning and keep shedding light, constantly. I like how you can't stare at the sun for too long. I love the moon, but the intensity of the sun speaks to me.
Now to the redacted questions : I lack appeal for Marcus tbh. Idk why, I've tried, he hasn't stuck. I'm platonically attracted to David Shaw, which apparently is an obvious guess. He's a big man in terms of capability, what with being the alpha to the most famous pack in dahlia. I don't wanna befriend him because of his power - I have this thing where I try to make friends with people who I think are better than me, people that make me uncomfortable in my own pride. I think he's capable of shaking me up because of how he handles intense responsibility alng with everything else.
My favourite playlist rn is my "current favs" one lmao. a bunch of screamo rap and trap rock. Idk it's a phase i think.
And last but not least - my guilty pleasure media is bf asmr 👍🏽

Okay, you’re going to think this is just because of the Sun and Sunshine metaphors, but hear me out, I promise, I swear there’s SO many reasons I want to pair you with Elliott-!
The way you describe yourself socially, the kind of friend you are, makes me imagine you and Elliott as just the It Couple, especially at parties. Elliott also strikes me as the social chameleon type who fits in well, balancing that intro-ambivert vibe of mood making and knowing when he needs time alone with you to recharge. It’s that lovely friends to lovers image of y’all being that couple that never makes anyone feel like the third wheel because you’re so genuinely fun to be around.
I also like the bit where you mentioned surrounding yourself with impressive people you admire, because Elliott is so cool. He’s, like, a government-contracted Defensive Dream Designer which must require skill, ambition, creativity, all that jazz. I can see that pairing well with you and your art. Imagine him taking you into dreams and helping you construct visual models of your ideas, bringing them to life for you to recreate, the two of you making art together!
Song:
Hush, hush, the world is quiet/ Hush, hush, we both can't fight it/ It's us that made this mess/ Why can't you understand?/ Whoa, I won't sleep tonight
I like this song for y’all because of the fun, “will they, won’t they”, undeniable tension vibes of it; like, the opening line is literally “I kind of want to be more than friends.” It’s perfect! I also think it’d be a fun party song for dancing, in my non-party going opinion, and Elliott strikes me as an alt/indie kind of guy, so this seems like the genre he’d like.
Runner-Ups:
I like Guy as a runner-up for you because I think he also has that restless energy and bright, sociable nature that would make y’all the absolute best party guests, However, I love Sam as a runner-up because one, “loyal, stubborn, and strong” is also how I’d describe him, Two, I am obsessed with pairing vampires with partners who radiate strong Sun energy, okay, there’s nothing like it.
note: thank you for your patience, I hope you like your results! 💖
Read this post and send me an ask if you’d like a match-up of your own! 💌

Wait actually I really liked that tag I made: Conformity is hostile & tiring. (also the part about it being dull)
People who only care about
fitting in
looking like everyone else /mainstream
not being weird
finding out the Best™ way to look/live (that's obviously universal)
visual art having to be hyperrealistic or realistic (all other visual art is a failure)
being pretty in a plain way / avoiding visual "flaws"
The only thing that matters about someone is how physically attractive or beautiful they are, whether they're a classmate, themselves, a war criminal or a YouTuber. (their personality or skills or achievements or crimes or anything like that are boring/uninteresting)
participating in pop culture (there's probably more nuance here, but to keep it short)
meeting the status quo
gender conformity in hobbies/sports (big red flag). (referring to activity part in the group more than the group's part of the activity)
only being interested in The Right Things
only listening to pop music / popular genres
something is Only valuable if Everyone already likes it
- are often rude and boring. They're usually the type to insult each other or strangers for not fitting the requirements they set for themselves. They don't want to think about things they haven't thought about before. If they meet or hear about anything different they "cringe" (accusing the person making them cringe of being "cringe" (a punishable offence)) and mock/ridicule them.
Meanwhile, people who
clearly spend little to no time on their appearance - or if they do it's not just The Trend right then, but making their own style
Are interested in uncommon/odd things - whether hated (/considered cringe or boring), unknown or just something people are generally neutral about
have ungendered hobbies/sports (hobbies common among men/boys &* women/girls)
are focused on hobbies/interests
do things because they're fun
care about themselves
never/rarely discuss physical appearance / never talk negatively about anyone's appearance (not even their own)
care about animals and/or nature
are often cooler. They usually don't judge you, and do treat you nicely and talk about stuff they find interesting, fun or funny. Whether they do weird stuff, or just don't actively conform, they're just cool.
*didn't mention nonbinary/abinary people because they don't really have nonbinary norms like that
These are just my beliefs, shaped by people I've known. I'm not saying anyone with a single trait from group 1 always are horrible, but just that people who have most of the opinions there often are hard to deal with, and have at times, completely incompatible world views.
But yeah. people in group 2 are soso cool and if you feel described and also bored or lonely or anything you can very much talk to me. Like, cause you are - as explained - cool imo, an ideal friend. (assuming you want to be my friend, if you actively don't want to be my friend then you're not an ideal friend obviously)

Could you answer this question? I went through a bunch of Sakura fics, many recommended by yourself (many good ones, thanks for your excellent taste!) but I also explored on my own, which is how this question spurred. I was wondering why so many ppl want Sakura to have wood release? &, because it's been a while so my memory's foggy, wasnt wood release sort of a bloodline thing? They had to infuse Hashirama's cells w/ Yamato for him to use it. It seems a little...I guess radical to give it to her? I LOVE Sakura, which is exactly why it kind of throws me off. I think she's already strong as is, & I think being able to utilize genjutsu & slug sage mode are logical expansions of her abilities, so wood release seems very...Idk how to put it but it seems like erasing Sakura. I'm discovering that I truly really dont think I like BAMF Sakura fics a lot bc it just doesnt read AS Sakura. It's like the author's are ashamed of her. Also I dislike when they use Strong!Sakura as a tag on ao3 bc she IS strong that HASNT changed & there's a canonical version of BAMF!Sakura in everything before the Pein arc. Everything after the Pein arc turned the entire series in a bad fanfiction for everyone in itself.
Thank you, I'm happy to know you enjoyed my recs!
Tumblr media
That's a good question.
This is what I think makes Sakura badass ➡ here
I love Sakura the way she is, as well. Her development, however, is lacking not in terms of her personality but her skillset. She has impressive chakra control, monstrous strength and is one of the two frontline medics and one of the best healers in the world. She has impressive feats under her belt as well, two of the most remarkable include her byakugo seal and her fight with Sasori alongside Chiyo. But it pales in comparison to her teammates, including Sai and Kakashi. I don't mind that too, because her journey is different than others, excluding Lee and possibly Tenten. She isn't seen much involved in fights, her attacks are repetitive in the show, she isn't bestowed many techniques under her belt and her best moments are in games and novels. It is not her character's fault but Kishimoto who just doesn't use her strength and intelligence which he (and other characters) have mentioned she has.
She is genjutsu type – but has she ever performed one, or even gotten out of one easily? Whats the use of such information if Kishimoto doesn't use it?
She has near perfect chakra control – she should be easily able to perform many techniques and practice different elements, especially water, but earth style and cloning is what we mostly ever see her use.
She has good foundation in Taijutsu – and that should increase her stamina and therefore her chakra coils, and that in turn will ensure she is able to use many techniques.
Her medical and research skills are only next to Tsunade – and we wish to see her revolutionize the medical field which she has but in Borutoverse. That is time skip. That doesn't really relive you much.
She has resistance to mind jutsus, thanks to her inner personality – and theoretically she should be able to even evade strong genjutsus like she did Ino's clan technique (something never been done before) but Kishimoto only used that incredible ability once. ONCE.
She has massive chakra storage and exceptional chakra control and sensitivity – she should be able to master Senjutsu, a field which is all about chakra. Anything that has to do with chakra control is Sakura's playground.
She is more or less an unofficial poison expert – but we didn't see her playing with poison expertly (a poison that even Suna's poison experts failed to break) after Gaara's retrieval arc.
She is the smart and responsible one of team 7 – but Kishi often makes her look both stupid and selfish. We don't see her use her intelligence much. I hate that more than her lacking in the expansion of the skills.
She trained under a political leader – that itself makes her and Shizune great administrators and governors. So, out of everyone, Sakura is the one of the best Hokage material. Hokage is said to be the strongest fighter of the village but that requirement failed us when Tsunade became the fifth Hokage.
She has yin seal – the strongest seals one can make, in their own body no less. It also shows her expert control of her chakra. She can summon one of the big 3 summons. Sealing is more or less code that requires high intelligence and great chakra control that can be fused into the ink. As far as I can tell, she is one of the best candidates to learn Fuinjutsu.
With all these possibilities of her growth – because it is not something we make up but something Kishi has implied she has but never explored – how can one not exploit it? It doesn't mean one doesn't love Sakura for who she is but that its because they love her that they want to give her what she has the right to. She doesn't have to be expert at something to be powerful, just her putting her skills to best use is admirable as it is. I love Sakura for who she is and who she could be.
Tumblr media
Now, onto the question as to why people seem to favour giving Sakura wood release, this are the following reasons that I think could be it:
Does it have to be bloodline limit?
Kishimoto gave Hashirama a unique bloodline limit that apparently cannot be inherited by any other Senju. That defeats the purpose of bloodline limit. What makes Senju clan so different? Without Hashirama in the picture, you cannot distinctly identify a Senju clan member aside from their strong chakras. Tobirama is identified for his water techniques. Tsunade has perfect control of her chakra that allowed her to exhibit monstrous strength and incredible healing abilities. How come wood release is a bloodline limit but is not passed down the line?
It is complicated because Tsunade is also renowned for her perfect chakra control just like Hashirama. So, some stories make Sakura a secret Senju clan member because of her uncanny resemblance to Tsunade and Senju clan in general. Pink hair can be a diluted version of Red (Mito) and her chakra control originating directly from Hashirama's lineage.
I personally don't like this because I love Sakura being a civilian child.
It's not a bloodline limit:
So, assuming wood release is not a bloodlimit but a very hard technique requiring precise chakra control and mastery of dual elements Earth and Water, then it is possible for Sakura to practice same technique because of her prodigious chakra control. By that logic, we can also assume that Tenzo inherited Hashirama's unique chakra control to use wood release. Because Orochimaru could have used Tsunade's DNA too if it was only about clan blood. So that rules out bloodline limit.
I love the idea of Sakura practising wood release because it is possible for her to do so. So if an author gives Sakura wood release that she hones with practice and control (ref. fanfic: Labyrinthine) instead of having been gifted with it, I'm digging it.
Nature chooses the wood user:
Naruto universe has many references to spiritual entities such as gods/goddesses, reincarnation and celestial bodies. It is conceivable to make nature an ethereal entity that has its own will. Sakura looks like the embodiment of spring with her petal hair and green eyes, and Hashirama can be compared to wood with his warm personality and appearance, these attributes can make them look distinctly attractive to nature. No other characters remind me strongly of nature than these two so I suppose they can be uniquely selected to be blessed this ability. Tenzo's abilities is the result of human experiment by Orochimaru who always cheats on nature so he is an exception.
I only like this because I like the idea of Sakura being Nature's child.
Tumblr media
Most stories that I love don't give her a special edge and only give her more techniques under her arsenal. It is very rarely that I love an OCC Sakura who has a bloodline, a clan or godlike abilities.
After Pein's arc, Naruto turned into a joke. Everyone in team 7 (barring Sakura, Sai and Yamato) and long list of antagonists seemed to get power ups left and right. Sakura got hers in the last moment as a last ditch effort to reunite team 7 as one, a moment that felt so hasty that I couldn't take the show seriously at all. I was so disappointed with the whole war arc. I cringe just thinking about it. I sometimes think if it would have been better for everyone to just die with happily ever after in their mind. That would be tragic but a fitting end because Madara became too OP and Kaguya ridiculously so.
The reason people add 'Strong', 'BAMF', 'Smart' prefixes before Sakura is the reason why people add extra qualities to Sakura's character. They are not satisfied with how Sakura handles herself in fights and many base her fights with the one she had with Sasori. After that, did you see her actively participating in any major fight, barring her attempts to make a score on sidelines? Usually, these fanfictions also justify why she is Tsunade 2.0, something the Naruto failed to show.
By the way, many stories have BAMF tag for Shikamaru, Naruto and Sasuke as well. Are they not already strong af? They don't use Strong tag for them though, and that's because their fighting prowess is already seen. Shikamaru is not much of a fighter as much as he is a strategist and a leader. He is a cool and sly character. Naruto and Sasuke have flashy moves with flashy names under their belt with absurd power levels that puts them in god tier. Sakura has none of that – no signature move that is uniquely her, no clan to back her, no move with a name (barring game moves) – and she is seen useless because she is a healer which is a non-offensive, background job even if it is the most crucial and taxing job. It's significance is even more reduced when people point out how her work is futile because they are again sent to the fight/missions once they are up to go. Most fans only care for visual aesthetics, regardless of how rare and in-demand medics are because of the lack of qualified people who can muster and use medical chakra properly.
Sakura is more than just a healer but in canon she is more or less reduced to that. To make things worse for her, both Ino and Hinata are also shown to have healing techniques. They both also have clan techniques (vastly unknown) with them which makes them appear more 'useful'. Sakura is literally in the shadow of her mentor and her friends.
In Boruto, she is said to be the most powerful Kunoichi of her generation and quite possibly the greatest medic in the world but in Shippuden it is severely undermined. This is also why Boruto fans love Sakura but a bunch of Shippuden fans don't.
I mostly don't judge BAMF/Strong Sakura fanfictions, but I mostly avoid Anbu Sakura fanfictions if I can because I personally don't belive Sakura to be an Anbu material.
.
I want to add more, but I think I got my point across. Thank you for reading this far. I hope I answered your question adequately.

Friday 1/10/21 - Media Recommendations #20
Contents: Deltarune
I'd been meaning to get to this one for ages, so once again, I think to make it easier on myself, and my readers, today I am only recommending the latest videogame creation of Toby Fox. This ended up being quite an extensive article, so I split it into sections:
MY CONTEXT
OVERVIEW/PREMISE
GAMEPLAY
PRESENTATION
CONCLUSION
Deltarune (Chapter 1+2)
Toby Fox
Tumblr media
1. MY CONTEXT
So context for my own gaming experience going into Deltarune, I have never actually played Undertale. Back when Undertale was getting big, it was only a PC game I think, and I just don't play games on PC. I probably should but yeah nah. Soon after it got popular however, I watched a comprehensive Lets Play of Undertale by Rubber Ross and Barry Kramer, and their voices for Sans and Papyrus are still to this day how I imagine those characters. Through that Lets Play, I experienced both the Pacifist and Genocide runs, and got intimately well acquainted with the characters and world Toby Fox had created, and how the actions of the player can shape how we save or ruin that world.
Tumblr media
As a general context, I have always been a person who likes the idea of turn-based, random encounter fantasy RPGs, but the deepest I really got was Pokémon. I've been trying to change that recently, and after beating Monster Hunter Stories 2 a while back, I wanted to try more of the genre. Turn based battles are a lot more my speed than pure skill, like fighting games I've become sick of, and RPGs seem to be big on story, so when I heard the Deltarune demo had an update, I thought this is finally the time to jump into that world.
Going forward in this review, I'm gonna try and stay broad and unspecific with my descriptions, so as to not spoil. I may discuss some gameplay themes and characters, but I'm avoiding giving specifics away. I really think you need to experience all parts of the game yourself first.
Minor Spoilers for Undertale and Deltarune Ahead
2. OVERVIEW/PREMISE
Deltarune is a project of love. Pure charm and personality ooze from every aspect of the game. Dialogue is clever and snarky, and that charm even leaks into item and location flavour text. The setting and themes are fun, but with a bloodstained silver lining that is best appreciated by mature audiences. I guess I should just explain the premise?
Tumblr media
Deltarune puts you in the shoes of a human named Kris. For unexplained reasons you live in a world of monsters and you are the only human. And by monsters, I mean curious looking critters of a variety of shapes and sizes, since, there is really nothing monstrous about them. One day at school, Kris and classmate Susie end up being transported to a whole different world where dark fountains construct monstrous subworlds, and it is up to the chosen ones, the lightners Susie, Kris and darkner (dark world native) Prince Ralsei, to seal the evils of this dark alternate world.
Tumblr media
Deltarune is still a work in progress, and as the subtitle of this article suggests, 2 Chapters of a possible 7(?) have been released, and it is unknown at the time of writing if the rest will come out when the game is done, or as more standalone chapters.
3. GAMEPLAY
Deltarune borrows a lot of theming and game loop premise from its parent game Undertale. The tag line of Undertale was: the RPG where noone has to die. This is because the encounter based battle system is built on two courses of action to take. You may FIGHT enemies and reduce their HP to zero, or you may ACT, and talk the enemy into leaving the battle. Deltarune is built on this same system, but with extra layers. Kris is the stand in for the Undertale MC, who has the options to FIGHT, ACT, ITEM, SPARE, or GUARD. Most of those options were in Undertale too, but Guarding is a new addition where you earn Tension Points, or TP, for not engaging the enemy at all.
Tumblr media
This TP is used for extra powerful ACT actions, or for special moves of the other party members. This is the main big difference in gameplay loop. Since the player controls a party now rather than just one person, each party member can specialise in different action types. Kris's ACT can incorporate input from other party members; Susie for toughness and Ralsei for softness, in general. Susie is the powerhouse, and if you chose the violent route, she does more damage. Ralsei is the Mage, and can heal allies, as well as use magic to resolve fights peacefully. Those extra abilities use TP.
Tumblr media
In most turn based RPGs, there is a back and forth, where the player chooses actions, and sometimes there is a timing aspect to how well those actions perform, and then there's the enemy's turn, where most of the time you just have to wait and let it happen. Undertale and Deltarune have this truly unique system where the soul of the party members, represented by a heart, is directly controlled on the enemy's turn. It's a mini game unique to every enemy type, where you must move the heart around to dodge their attacks, and how good you dodge will decide whether you take a lot of damage, or even none at all. Deltarune adds an extra layer onto this, where if you make the dodge closer, so that the enemy only JUST misses, you earn TP, and open up more options for your next turn. I found this extra detail really endearing, and I made a lot more riskier moves than if there was no incentive to.
Tumblr media
I probably mentioned it above, but just to close out this section, the option to either ACT or FIGHT opens up two types of play. Chapter 1, being a sort of intro part, does not differentiate, but the distinction becomes important later. ACTing to SPARE an enemy earns you money, and in Chapter 2, will lead to befriending monsters. FIGHTing will also earn you EXP in Chapter 2, making your options to hurt enemies more powerful. In Undertale, this difference in playstyle actually changed the ending in real time, and from what we know of Deltarune, it is likely going to be the same case.
4. PRESENTATION
Undertale had this unique visual charm to it that may have been a limitation of its Independent Development, but it was probably also a stylistic choice. Deltarune builds on the same type of artstyle, adorable pixel sprite graphics that bring a lot more colour and depth than its predecessor.
Tumblr media
Many, but not all characters have little character portraits in their textboxes, and they change expressions to match the situation, and its so cute.
Character and enemy design are so top-notch. A team of designers have been brought on this time, and every one of them have brought gold to the table. Every random battle encounter is dripping with personality, as you learn how best to sweet talk your way out of battle, or how to best destroy them. Most recurring NPCs are lovable, and those who you hate, you love to hate. Dialogue is witty and hilarious, and the writing is fun.
Tumblr media
The chiptune style soundtrack is phenomenal. Although I think Undertale's common enemy battle them was more memorable, that may just be that I have become more familiar with it. All character and boss battle themes are so catchy and energetic. Toby Fox is a master of high energy... fun music. It gets stuck in your head, and your brain bounces around at high velocity.
5. CONCLUSION
Ok so this review is already like 3 times longer than a normal Media Recommendation Article, and like 5 times longer than I planned it to be for this one game, so I should probably wrap it up here. Deltarune is a game experience I put off playing for way too long, and now I can't hold my excitement for when the next part comes out. And important to keep in mind, it is essentially a demo, in that it is just a taste of what's to come, but it is a damn meaty demo that will keep you engaged for many hours.
Chapters 1 and 2 are packaged together as a free game on most game platforms at this point, so there's nothing really stopping you from giving it a try. I don't usually rate my recommendations, but since I wrote this more like a review, I might as well...
Deltarune Chapter 1+2: 9/10
Please play it!

Dear Vanessa! I am forever in love with your art and it helped me through my depression back in spring, I am very grateful for it. There is something special about how you painting emotions, it makes me so soft and sentimental, but I can't figure (as a painting method) what exactly do you do - to pass them so truly and touching. I'm working on my drawing skills (I'm a beginner) and faces are my weak spot. If you can - can you give some tips on how get better at drawing them (faces and emotions)?
Oh wow. 🥺 I’m so touched to hear my artwork had a positive impact on you during such a tough time. Thank you for sharing something so personal with me, and I hope you’re feeling much better now!
As to drawing emotions, I’m so happy you think I do a decent job, because it’s something I work hard to improve on all the time. I could probably do a tutorial series on just this topic alone, but as the internet has loads of resources on drawing emotions already, I’ll try to expand a bit on what I do personally to push expressions into more subtle territory.
Let me just start by saying there’s nothing wrong with hunting down photographs and using them as references for painting expressions if you’re having trouble articulating an emotion. It is, however, easy to over-rely on them and—especially where illustration, sequential art, or animation are concerned—you run the risk of drawing a face that, because it’s a facsimile of a photo, might not have that living “spark” that comes of inhabiting a character from the inside and drawing “off-script.” And illustration needs to tell a story, not copy an expression.
1) Step into your character’s skin.
When I drew last Saturday’s scene from Wayward Son, I literally made every expression on the page as I was painting them, because the value of the scene was in the subtext, or things unspoken (i.e. Baz and Simon’s faces needed to do double-duty in communicating what was happening). Making the faces as I drew made a difference because, in wearing the expression myself, I could feel how the muscles in my face changed, and where my eyes, eyebrows, mouth, etc. were “storing emotion,” if that makes sense.
Let’s take Baz’s face in this panel:
Tumblr media
Rainbow gives us a very brief description of what Baz looks like at this point: “His eyes are narrow and shadowed.” Naturally, I started there, but that’s not quite enough to visually convey what’s also happening here:
Baz is hiding his pain.
So what do we do when we are both in pain but trying to shield others from seeing it? When I tried that emotion on for size, I realized I wouldn’t make eye contact at all. My lips pursed a bit, as if to seal my mouth shut and prevent the pain from leaking out. My eyebrows furrowed, not quite in anger, but rather in resignation. Sitting in Baz’s skin, I realized I wouldn’t slouch either. These are all things that informed teeny adjustments to the sketch and helped back up Simon’s assessment that Baz was lying.
Here’s another:
Tumblr media
We don’t get any description of Simon’s horror at seeing what has happened to Baz’s chest. What we get is a gruesome and graphic depiction of what Baz’s skin looks like and Simon’s italicized “Baz.”
It takes stepping into the character’s skin to see what his face would look like (and that would go for anyone who’s reading the book, let alone drawing from it). So I thought to myself, the person Simon loves most has been wounded in a way he’s never seen before. When I “tried on” that scenario, a hybrid expression took shape on my own face. My upperlip was slightly curled in horror. My eyebrows pulled in and up in fear. My eyes went wide, but stayed just a bit soft (because that’s the product of mixing shock with concern). And the end result is what you see above.
Sometimes I have a mirror handy for this sort of operation because emotions are complicated things to nail. But often it’s enough just to feel it and see if what I’m looking at on the screen or on paper is matching what I feel. If not, I have to reassess and see where certain lines can be pushed/pulled to capture what I am aiming for. Occasionally this strategy doesn’t work, but I will say that my success at nailing expressions skyrockets when I act it out myself. Lol
2) Build emotions from broken down gestures. If you are a beginner to drawing expressions, it helps to think of the face as an equation with components that add up to an emotion. Look at comics, cartoons, and other illustrations/art to see where certain gestures show up again and again, and use that exposure to build a vocabulary of features that you can mix and match to create some basic expressions.
For example:
Tumblr media
(Forgive the crudeness of the above illustration. I’m cranking this out on my lunch break! Lol)
3) Experiment! Honestly the best way to get good at drawing emotions is to practice and play (and those are not mutually exclusive terms) with expressions. I started out studying the work of one of my all-time favorite animators, Glen Keane, because I always thought his characters looked so soulful. So I looked at his character sheets for Ariel, the Beast, Tarzan, etc. and tried my hand at duplicating them. It helped me learn that I often had to be more exaggerated with my expressions than I was naturally inclined to be if I wanted people to resonate with the emotion I was trying to convey on paper.
That’s all I’ve got for you today, but I hope this gave you a bit of insight into my personal process. Again there are LOADS of resources on the web if you even just type in the words “how to draw facial expressions,” but the above should help take you a bit further than the tutorials and establish a personal connection to the art that you produce.
Good luck, and if you feel so inclined, I hope you’ll share your creations!

INTERVIEW: That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and So I'm a Spider, So What? Lead Voice Actors
Tumblr media
In coordination with the current season of So I’m a Spider, So What?, Crunchyroll News was given the opportunity to officially translate interviews with the staff and cast of the series. You can read the original Japanese interview between Aoi Yuki and Miho Okasaki right here.
The interview was conducted by Daisuke Iwakura.
So I'm a Spider, So What? x That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime Crossover Interview! "Me" (a.k.a. Kumoko) Aoi Yuki and "Rimuru Tempest" Miho Okasaki.
It's a dream crossover between two anime airing in January: So I'm a Spider, So What? and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime! The interview was held on December 19th, 2020 as part of the Isekai Miracle Crossover broadcast featuring Aoi Yuki, who plays "Me" (a.k.a. Kumoko), and Miho Okasaki, who plays Rimuru Tempest.
These two characters were reincarnated as monsters, and while they have their similarities, they have their differences, too. We spoke to Yuki-san and Okasaki-san about what they have in common, where they're distinct, and what makes each of the shows so interesting.
Tumblr media
A shared concern ... being reincarnated means having a lot of dialogue?!
—I've heard this is the first time either of you have encountered each other's projects. For starters, could you give a brief description of the show? Yuki-san, if you could go first.
Yuki: Kumoko is a girl who was unfortunate enough to find herself reincarnated as a spider after her classroom was blown up. And the type of spider she was reincarnated as happens to be the weakest monster in that world. She's initially pretty pessimistic about what's happened, but her naturally positive and free-wheeling personality allow her to tackle the situation with gusto. She's got a lot of strengths like being quick-witted and staying calm under stress, but I think her biggest appeal is that she's very self-centered, in a good way. The way she's able to focus on what she needs to do, and what she needs to pursue to become happy makes a good match for having been turned into a monster, and really ties into her determination to survive.
Okasaki: Before the interview, they showed me the first episode of So I'm a Spider, So What? and while I did think Kumoko's optimism was charming, I was amazed by how many lines Yuki-san had!
Yuki: It's pretty brutal, right?! It gives the impression that being reincarnated means having a lot of dialogue. (Laughs)
Okasaki: I know what you mean! Rimuru is the same way, he has a lot of monologues.
Yuki: Chalk it up to "things that happened when you're reincarnated." I've reincarnated a few times before ... by which I mean my characters have, of course. (Laughs) But the amount of lines Kumoko has is incomparable to all the rest.
Okasaki: The way she talks to herself so amusingly is really entertaining, and it really speaks to Yuki-san's strengths as an actress. I was amazed.
  Yuki: Thank you so much!
Tumblr media
—Now, Okasaki-san, if you could tell us about Rimuru.
Okasaki: After reincarnating as a slime, Rimuru ran into a character named Shizu-san, and as a result gained an alternate human form. And while I think being able to change shapes is kind of cheating (Laughs), both are really cute, and I really enjoy making each form sound distinct during the recording. In terms of personality, he's got a really big heart. He encounters characters that oppose him, but he considers their circumstances and ends up making them into allies. His humanity really attracts others to him. It's that kind of personality where you can understand how he ended up as a leader.
Yuki: I was shown Episode 25 of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Even in that one episode, you could tell how beloved he is in a way that makes you kind of jealous. Kumoko would love to join Tempest (the Jura Tempest Federation)!
Okasaki: We'd be glad to have you! Our country is very accepting of monsters.
Yuki: Meanwhile, I'm stuck in a cave having to kill other monsters! (Laughs) The problem is none of them will listen to reason, so I just have to eat them.
  Okasaki: (Laughs)
Yuki: I also like how easy-going Rimuru is. Even when everyone is desperate and fighting, he never loses his cool, which really impresses on you how big of a deal he is. It's the kind of composure that comes from being really strong.
Okasaki: That's true, being able to take a step back and look at things analytically is one of Rimuru's strengths.
Tumblr media
—I'd like to discuss the similarities and differences between the two characters. First, since Kumoko and Rimuru have both reincarnated, let's talk about the differences between who they originally were.
Okasaki: Rimuru was originally a 37-year-old office worker.
Yuki: Kumoko was a high schooler, so that's about a 20 year age difference.
Okasaki: Since he's an older guy, Rimuru gets really, really excited whenever cute girls show up.
Yuki: I remember him riding on top of someone's boobs. (Laughs)
Okasaki: That did happen. He often uses his slime form as a means to get to sit in girls' laps. When we were recording that scene, the audio director had to explain the male point of view in that situation. His direction was along the lines of, "You need to sound happier about it." (Laughs)
—Do you try to be conscious about him being a  37-year-old man when portraying Rimuru, Okasaki-san?
Okasaki: I do. I really think his perspective on things tends to be on the mature side. He doesn't feel desperate to survive like Kumoko, and when confronted with an enemy, his reaction is to think, "Well, I'll give it a shot," instead of, "I'm gonna win!" He reincarnated, ended up with a variety of skills, and before long he became a ruler, but he lived 37 years of his life and developed an outlook that keeps him from feeling desperate, and I try to capture that maturity when I perform as him.
Yuki: When you're 37 years old, you're an adult who's dealt with things like taking care of bills and paying into your pension, and you'll have experienced both the sweet and bitter parts of life, letting you see how it all balances out. You're able to approach life in a way where the overarching thought is, "Well, that's just how it is." Compared to that, Kumoko hasn't even started paying taxes yet, and hasn't really developed an outlook to approach life with. As a result, she tackles things with a gusto that makes you wonder if she's going to burn out, which really shows how youthful she is. But I also think the world she's reincarnated into is one where that kind of ferocity is necessary for survival.
Tumblr media
—There's also the fact that currently, Rimuru is surrounded by friends, while Kumoko is all by herself.
Yuki: There's a part in Episode 25 where Rimuru's friends are having him dress up in different outfits, almost like a doll, and I thought that was wonderful. Kumoko has been on her own this entire time, in a cave, and is only able to fantasize about getting to wear clothing.
Okasaki: For as much of a social butterfly as he is, Rimuru actually never had a girlfriend in his past life.
Yuki: Maybe he never seemed like boyfriend material? The kind of person who finds the object of their affection asking for romantic advice.
Okasaki: Oh! I kind of feel bad for him, now ... maybe he lacked that extra spice that's necessary.
Yuki: He's nice, and seems smart, and gives really good relationship advice.
Okasaki: And ended up as a bachelor for 37 years as a result ... But when I think about it that way, the world he was reincarnated to might be suited to Rimuru. It's a world where you get judged for the amount of power you have, so by being both powerful and lovable, he and the world have a mutual appreciation for each other. Rimuru's past life didn't end up being very personally productive, so his reincarnation doesn't seem so bad now that he gets to be surrounded by friends and enjoy life.
Tumblr media
—Since Kumoko is by herself, it sounds like you end up doing a lot of recording by yourself, too.
Yuki: It's so lonely! The second set of key visuals show four different versions of Kumoko, but they're all played by me.
  Okasaki: I didn't know that!
Yuki: I'm still alone, but at least there's a little bit more back-and-forth now. (Laughs)
Okasaki: That seems like it'd be a lot of lines ...
Yuki: It feels like things have gotten even more hectic with the four of her.
—Another interesting point of comparison is how the characters both have encounters with dragons.
Yuki: The Earth Dragon I run into is bad news. Unlike Veldora, it's not interested in talking at all.
Okasaki: I guess communication is off the table. It's also pretty scary looking! (Looking at the art in the teaser visuals.)
Yuki: And it's really strong! And it's definitely going to threaten Kumoko again. The thought of becoming friends didn't occur to me.
Okasaki: I'm not so sure that'd work, even for Rimuru.
Yuki: Rimuru-san's strong too, though, so he'd be able to deal with it.
Tumblr media
—In comparison, Veldora is almost like Rimuru's partner.
Okasaki: That's right. He might look so scary that Rimuru fainted when he first saw him, but he's actually pretty charming when you talk to him. And a tsundere!
  Yuki: That's great!
Okasaki: When Rimuru approaches him about being friends, Veldora says, "Well, I guess I can consider it!" But in the end, they become friends anyway.
Yuki: That's so nice. This might be a little weird, but I always find the fantasy races in stories like this to be charming. That goes for the humanoid ones of course, but even the monstrous ones can really pull on my heartstrings. When I was talking to a friend who feels the same way, they mentioned that Veldora-san is super cute.
Okasaki: That's interesting! Veldora is definitely a popular character.
Yuki: Everyone who finds dragons cute mentioned him, so I've looked at some character art before. Rimuru was in slime form too, so it was like, "This is some good fantasy race content."
Tumblr media
Their circumstances may be different, but these reincarnations would definitely get along!
—We've discussed the things they have in common, and their differences, and now I'd like to ask: Do you think these two characters would get along?
Yuki: I don't think they'd have any trouble in that regard since they'd be able to communicate and understand each other.
Okasaki: The fact that they've both reincarnated is something they'd be able to bond over, and I think Rimuru would be thrilled to encounter another former human who reincarnated as a monster.
Yuki: Kumoko is friendly as long as she's not hungry ... then again, I think she'd realize she's outmatched. And since she doesn't pick fights she can't win, I'm sure they'd get along fine. I apologize if she accidentally eats anyone from Tempest, though!
Okasaki: That would not be okay! (Laughs) Rimuru really cares about his friends, so please try and show some restraint. There's plenty of actual food to eat, instead!
Yuki: As long as there's food.
Okasaki: That's a relief ... but after talking it over, it'd be interesting to see Rimuru and Kumoko actually interact.
Yuki: It'd make a great short anime!
Okasaki: Good idea! They've crossed over before, so I'd love it if they adapted that story! ["Monster x Reincarnation Fair" was an original short story by So I'm a Spider, So What? author Okina Baba-sensei.]
Tumblr media
—Since you're both here, do you have any questions for each other?
Okasaki: Hearing Yuki-san's performance, she's doing a great job of establishing Kumoko-san's character, but at the same time, you can imagine a normal human high school student with the same performance. How did you manage that?
Yuki: To be honest, I already knew going to the audition that I'd be talking a lot with this role, and I realized if I went too hard, the performance would fall apart. (Laughs) For example, talking in a really high voice for an extended period of time wouldn't be possible, right? The end result is what comes from eliminating stuff like that. And since she's a character who can go from really low energy to being super excited pretty quickly, I tried to use a neutral voice that would let me do both.
Okasaki: That's really interesting! You knew you would be talking a lot beforehand, right?
Yuki: You should always be careful with any project that has "reincarnation" in the premise, because you'll end up talking a lot.
Okasaki: Hahaha, you're right! I'll have to remember that. (Laughs)
—Do you have any questions, Yuki-san?
Yuki: Rimuru-san has no gender as a slime. Was there anything special that you did considering that?
Okasaki: I thought he would sound gender-neutral, so I tried to craft a voice that would give that impression. That being said, I'm a woman with a feminine voice, so what worked best was leaning into a boyish direction. I would record the voice I came up with and listen to it, searching for a voice that suits the genderless Rimuru. My own voice isn't particularly exuberant either (laughs), and since I've a relatively huskier tone, I was eventually able to nail it pretty easily. That helps make it come out naturally.
Tumblr media
—Thank you both so much. Before we go, what do you think is the main appeal of your projects?
Okasaki: In Season 1, Rimuru was reincarnated as a slime, got a humanoid form, made friends, created a nice country, and it ended on a peaceful note. But in Season 2, he's going to be encountering a lot of opposition and forced to make some major decisions. Things have been smooth sailing so far, but now he's going to have to think about what he can do for his friends. I've been portraying a new, more heroic side of him, which I think will be a lot of fun to see.
Yuki: Kumoko's story has an element of "survival of the fittest," and there's a kind of exhilaration you get from seeing that unfold. She faces a strong enemy, grows from the experience, and then encounters something even stronger, continuing to evolve. That cycle is really interesting to watch, and her positivity can make you happy just from seeing it unfold, so it might be a good idea to end a long day with watching So I'm a Spider, So What?

I Have A Lot To Say So I'll Read More This.
The short of it?
I'm glad I played Joker- I played it because I wanted to know how DQM evolved when it reached the DS and I got my answer.
It's mediocre. Not bad exactly, I enjoyed playing it, it adds some REALLY appreciated features to the DQM series and if you were playing it at release it had online play which plays well with the post game content which I haven't touched by the time I wrote this:
-but there are some engine/console specific things that made it a drag and there are some parts of the game that are just weaker than the previous games which is amusing since the previous games were simple GBC titles.
And finally, I don't really recommend playing through Joker 1. Can't speak on the sequels, but Joker 1 was a pretty middling experience for me so I'm the wrong person to get a positive recommendation from.
And since the opportunity presents itself: If you like monster RPGs and haven't tried it- go emulate Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 for the GBC, it's really good and also if you emulate you can fast forward the GBC era grind if that's your taste- really a win all around.
On to my rambling:
I debated on writing, rewriting, rewriting, and better presenting my thoughts on this game and the series as a whole but nah, Joker ain't getting that, I'm ramblin'- lol
I will split it slightly between "The ending" and "The game as a whole" though.
Ending:
1:07 - This is slightly a 'game a a whole' thing but honestly it's funny to me that you unlock a permanent repel in this game by doing the main quest. I entered this dungeon feeling strong enough to beat the game, so I just avoided 90% of encounters entirely.
5:00 - I genuinely got a laugh out of Sparkpug's whole deal in this finale. Not story wise, that's fine, no complaints- I mean that Sparkpug is clearly built to be a monster that can carry an ineffective team. He's clearly meant to be bred a few times and a god tier member of a potentially inexperienced player's team- but I literally never used him after the intro.
So during this scene it's supposed to be like "I'm a demi-god monster, you can't possibly beat me" and I'm thinking "Dude, you're like level 10 and shit tier, you can't win, this is hilarious."
Obviously it's a real boss fight and not 'face the monster you once had' but I was having fun roasting him behind the scenes of this recording.
45:00 - What an entirely unexpected change of pace.
Like, I had it spoiled for me by a screenshot that Dr. Snap becomes a monster or something- but I thought maybe he was always a monster or something, and also I got a bad look at him.
HE TURNS INTO A BODY HORROR BEAST, THAT'S NUTS.
Genuinely a highlight of the game.
52:00 - I fucking laughed what a meaningless exchange where the payoff is saying "He was stupid!", it's honestly just silly and dumb but not necessarily bad just dumb lol
55:00 - Not a great 'you won' victory lap. Like at all. Kinda feels like they should have just made this all a cutscene where I appear back at town and see that Solitaire is the leader now etc etc.
I kinda don't understand why it's a victory lap at all? Because all anyone says is "They picked a weird successor to Snap >:(" or "Snap went to the island? I bet he was stopping the calamity :)"
If you have 2 lines of dialogue prepared, maybe don't make a victory lap???
1:00:00 - What a fucking stupid payoff lol
Like sincerely, Solitaire does NOTHING the entire game! She's meaningless from start to finish! And the 'surprise' is that she's the new commish??? And she got the position because she's a rich spoiled brat??? Like LITERALLY that's why????????
What a stupid fucking ending lol
Now her proposed evolution of the contest is fair enough, I mean it's childish as hell, but to be fair- more contests is a fine idea especially since prior games and this game demonstrated the public's interest in watching monster fights. And the goal being to fight her as the final fight is fucking egotistical and stupid- BUT- it does play into the fact that the player didn't get to fight her the whole game so it's whatever?
1:03:00 - This is both the best and worst lol.
This game has no story, like at all, it's fucking empty front to back, and only explodes with like- 1 event at the very end.
This moment is a montage of memorable moments with your 'best friend' Sparkpug. It's cinematically very nice to be honest! Even includes a moment I don't remember at the arena which probably didn't happen lol.
So visually it's cool- I dig seeing the camera zoom out as we run across the beach, and the flashback moments intersplice over us making our way to the scout memorial- that's very well done.
The content is empty lol
As I said there's no story, these moments are nothing lol
And that's that.
All said the ending was a very nice challenge to face with my team- I had to abuse items like mad but I MADE IT! It was a GOOD fight.
The rest I've already said.
On to the game as a whole:
I have issues with this game, but there's good too. It's really like 4 steps forward 6-7 steps back it's weird, it's really weird.
Positives are neat!
> First and foremost- TRAITS!
Monsters in Dragon Quest Monsters have always had a problem with keeping their identity for long. The way I'd explain it to an outsider to the series is that Monsters DO have special stat variance and intended movesets and all that jazz- but the breeding system completely and entirely destroys that relatively early into the game.
While a monster might normally have really high defense and low other stats while knowing buffing magic- breeding, EVEN UNINTENTIONALLY, will have that same monster come out with 9 billion attack and all ice magic.
Monsters in DQM have a habit of becoming canvases for the breeding effects rather than their own mons- and this is undeniably a downside. It makes the game feel unique, it doesn't 'hurt' it, but when by mid-game monsters are more easily identified as sprites rather than strengths and weaknesses or even types (family) it's a slight downer on the series.
Traits fix this a lot by making every specific monster have unchangeable traits which offer things like "immunity to x type of damage" or "higher crit chance"- it's small, but it gives each monster more identity.
> Second and secondmost- SKILLS!
The older games didn't use trees, it used each individual spell as a potential pass on during breeding.
Each monster could have 8 spells, and when you breed two monsters you pass on all 16 spells to the offspring (they don't learn them all at once, they learn them as they level up) as well as the natural spells the monster would learn by level up.
So in the older games it is really easy to end up with a refined and overpowered list of 8 spells on each of your monsters.
Now spells are tied to Skill trees and your monsters can have 3 skill trees total (which are passed on as OPTIONS when breeding).
All to say skills do a lot for removing the "Master of all, weakness of none" spell lists that the older games made trivial to make, now you have to limit your builds and be more specialized- also they added skills like "Attack up" to add more variance to a build- instead of having spells you might just have high stat buffs as skill trees.
Overall I think Skills are an improvement because coupled with Traits it makes each monster feel much more specialized and unique and less like a sprite with no identity.
> Breeding is improved.
This is very much because of skills and traits- again- but also the system is just improved in general. Instead of being told "That's a monster you haven't had before!" and judging your decisions based on the name of the offspring breed, now you get to see a small sprite of the resulting monster to help you decide- ALSO instead of getting 1 result for every combo (to the point where you have to back out and choose Monster A + Monster B and Monster B + Monster A as separate options), you now get up to 3 results to pick between for every breeding opportunity.
It's just better.
> The engine is impressive.
At least to me. This is a DS title using (from what I read) a rework of the DQ8 PS2 game's engine- it certainly looks like it.
Combat models are nice, using moves looks nice, overworld exploration looks nice- it looks nice.
Now for some negative and general nonsense- all of which is more often than not 'weird'.
> I gotta be unfair and say "The Story" first and foremost.
DQM 1 and 2 are not intense story games. They aren't.
But they both knew how to handle their story well for what they wanted to tell, I can and will praise both for their narratives because they know what they are and do it well.
DQM:J does not. It's fucking bad.
Basically: The overall story doesn't exist- you're told to be a spy, but that comes up 1 time towards the end of the game and LITERALLY doesn't matter at any other moment INCLUDING the one time it comes up.
You have NO meaningful objective from the start up until near the end of the game. You show up and have no goal- so you get told to get some crystals with no meaning behind it (not even a lie because they are clearly evil- not even a lie to motivate you! NO MEANING IS PRESENTED! JUST DO IT! TO DO THE CONTEST I GUESS! WHY? SHUT UP!)
So 90% of the game time you're not doing anything meaningful. So what about the islands? Any small narratives to keep things moving?
NO!
NOT AT ALL!
So you go 90% of the game having no real objective, just kinda wandering forward mindlessly- and then the game suddenly goes "Oh! Guy who seemed sus! He's evil! He's gonna unleash the calamity that you were 'kinda but not directly' working towards with your dog! You know, that plot point that's kept vague and paid 0% attention to the entire game? Yeah it's happening! Aaaaand you're done! GG!"
Basically there's just nothing going on in this game, it's all background noise until the last 10% of the game. And that's lame.
DQM1 had a light story- but from the very intro cutscene you have a clear objective which makes every action you do seem relevant as you are working towards that goal.
From the start of the game you know "My sister is gone! The king says a magic wish can get her back! I'll go do that!" and then you do!
DQM2 has a much better story!
You have a goal from the start (The kingdom is physically dying and you have to save it by getting a new plug!) AND it has stories for each world you visit!
THAT'S MILES BETTER! THIS GAME COULD HAVE DONE THAT FOR THE ISLANDS!
Anywho. Story is lacking and empty and lame especially when DQM2 has a similar format but does every part better- you have a clear objective you're working towards AND side stories to keep the light narrative moving!
WTH!
The spy plotline doesn't matter! It could have been used to build suspicion on who's the good guy!
The islands are so empty of story!
DQM2 has a fun mix on how a rival character works which makes every world interesting to see how they get involved!
This game has a rival that does NOTHING!!!!!!!!!
It's just such a step back from the previous games, it's weird to see DQM 1 land a solid simple story and DQM 2 build a great format to expand the story going forward- and then DQM:J just slams its head into the dirt and wipes out.
> Game's slow.
The engine switch is a good thing overall, but it makes combat slower (a lot), adds loading screens to combat (primarily), and they didn't bother speeding up the grind from previous games.
Because of the grind still existing which isn't a problem in and of itself- the game becomes SLOW AS HELL because the engine makes that grind take longer.
Also world exploration is slow which is to be expected when moving from 2d to 3d, but this is countered by adding things to the world to find or do- and Joker tries but it's still noticeable. The world exploration isn't a problem, it just stands out alongside the combat being slow as hell.
The engine change was a great thing- but it feels like they should have put more work into speeding up combat to counter the slowdown of load times and flashy animations.
A GOOD WAY TO FIX THAT MIGHT BE XP!
> Music ain't great in my opinion.
DQ has amazing music. This game has some weak renditions in my opinion. The CELL HQ theme song is a pretty good poster child for the worst there is, but just in general even the better music is lacking compared to the chiptunes of the GBC or the better mixes of the main series.
Maybe it's unfair, it's a DS game, I don't know, I just know I ended up just muting most of the game because it didn't sound great. I played the GBC games OSTs instead for a large portion of my playthrough. I listened to videos instead for the bulk of the game.
It's just not pleasant to me, sorry to say.
> XP!!!!!!!
I'm being a spoiled ass on this but yeah!
XP SUCKS IN THIS!
There aren't good placed to grind until you beat the game! (apparently)
The first level blatantly has too low xp which makes you grind before you can tackle the boss of the island- and the late game has you mindlessly grinding low xp rewards in order to be ready to face the final boss.
It's WEIRD!
Why is it so low!
> Tech is weird!
I could ramble on this alone but here's the short version:
DQ has a unique fantasy world aesthetic that each game has explored in its own way. It's basically "swords, magic, monsters, and charm- things feel light but aren't afraid to get scary sometimes :)"
This game... doesn't.
This game has fuckin' tech watches, jet skis, TOWER PCS????
This ISN'T dragon quest on a world building level.
It's like, contemporary modern world but with slimes.
And that could be good I guess, but it feels so fucking weird to see PCs right alongside swords and axes and a dracky.
Like... why?
It's a poor aesthetic according to my tastes. Maybe I'm an ass for that. The tech is weird.
All to say, in a poor rambling "I gotta get this out of me" kinda way, is Joker was fine.
I enjoyed breeding. I enjoyed seeing the engine. I enjoyed the unique additions like a 'hero monster'.
But I also had to grind mindlessly on a slower game.
I had to endure a story that forgot to show up until the very end.
I sat there thinking about replaying the older ones the whole time.
It was fine.
It's mediocre.
I'm glad I played it.
I'm done now :)

Advice for people who feel like giving up (and why it might help you) by struthless
2:42 AM 6/3/2021
Recently I watched a Struthless video, which are usually so helpful and encouraging to me, which mentioned evaluating which art medium to pursue, by seeing which one yielded progress after time, and I just got really disheartened. Because it's been like 10 years and living as an artist has gone no where for me. I haven't even had the guts to open an online shop in all this time. ;o;! I feel like it's the same type of self sabotage that I did to myself when I was in an office job I didn't care for. I mean, *I* think I've made a lot of personal progress as an artist and have increased my skill to the point of some confidence in having even the teeniest bit of ability...But personal Growth means nothing in terms of competitive professionals. ;_; AT times like this, I wonder what it would have been like if I had stayed focused on writing. That was my real art form, since I was young. I wonder if I'm going to be one of those people who rediscover an art form that I had abandoned years ago. Am I going to later in life become a writer then wonder why I ever detoured into visual arts for all those decades at all?
I loved writing. I only really gave it up by accident. I loved writing so much that I saw everything in my life, in terms of writing. Writing was my lens on everything. Every experience was fodder for my writing. Even when I went through emotionally hard times, I thought of it as valuable so that I could put it into my writing, enhance it with real emotional experiences. It was my whole identity.
But I really respected manga-ka who did their own writing AND illustration. I looked at them with stars in my eyes. I didn't want to just be like the comic book writers who didn't do their own illustration.
And frankly, I had gotten to a point in my writing where I felt frustration with my limitations. I was confident that my writing could continually Grow, but at the same time, it wasn't Growing enough for me to meet the scenes I saw in my head. I could see it so clearly. If only I could just draw it, instead of constantly describing what I saw in my head...
And that's when the trouble started. I had to choose a major in collage, and out of all the core classes, sampling each field, art was the only one that I not only put a lot of unprompted excess effort into, but I actually enjoyed putting in that unprompted excess effort! If you enjoy working hard at something, that's a sign that it's the career where you belong, right? And I was so confident that my writing could continually Grow through my own practice, since that is what I had always done. So if I wanted to be a writer-artist, then I had to admit that when it came to art/drawing, that's where I needed external help. I chose art as a major. I didn't expect it to be so (time) consuming that I would let my writing fall to the wayside. Writing used to be everything to me, my whole identity, and Growing continually on its own... But now I didn't even do enough reading of other people's writings, to nourish my own writing skills. And before I knew it, I hadn't written a story in years. The only writing I still do regularly is journaling, and does that really count? What can I do with essays, if I'm too scared to let my personal opinions known? You can't make video essays or write articles, when the thought of exposing your inner thoughts gives you more anxiety than you can live with. And any attempts to make essays seem impersonal, is just sterilizing, and likely to yield bad writing. ~_~; But how can I get back into narrative writing, when I became so disillusioned with reading novels that I swore off of them for the rest of my life, since the middle of high school. I used to be a bookworm, but after all that girly crap my high school fed us---after they promised they were the type of all-girls school to not restrict girls to outdated female stereotypes---I had just had it with reading novels. I went to comic books, anime, manga, fanfics, and reference books, and never went back. ...But if I don't go back to novels, then how can I become a writer again? What about becoming a writer who can draw my own stories? Or more relevant now, how can I return to the artform that I originally felt at home with, Writing, after being a visual artist has proven a professionally/financially unsustainable fit for me? ;____;
Then again. I always had a sense I'd die young, and I'm getting older. Maybe I'll die soon and not have to worry about any of this.

Hi! 22 years old transmasculine person here. Would probably be good to know that I suspect I might be autistic, and have suffered from depression, anxiety and emotional problems before. Nowadays I'm better and more stable, though.
1. Are there any types you’re torn between? Which ones and why? Look into cognitive functions and really put some thought into this.
ISTJ, ESTJ, ISFP, ISFJ mostly. From tests I've gotten all kind of results - mostly they've been intuitives - but I'm pretty sure I'm a sensor, especially when I compare myself to intuitives in my life. Intuitive types I've thought of are INTP, INFP and ENTJ, even. I kinda see Te and Fi on myself, however also Ti in addition to that. I identify with Si quite a much - I tend to be alert of new situations and I prefer to know what will happen before engaging. (This has been a bit of a problem for me before but I've been working on it slowly.) I somewhat see Ne on my varying interests and seeing possibilities everywhere - though I'm cautious of carrying them out and need to plan things for long time. I see myself more as a thinker than a feeler, maybe.
2. What do you LOVE to do - to the point where you can go all day without eating or sleeping - and why? Tell me about as many things as come to mind.
The first thing that comes to mind is that I just love learning about different subjects (whatever picks my interest - it varies and I become usually very obsessed with it). I love telling about my interests to other people and discussing about them, I like to challenge my thinking even though I sometimes might come off as blunt and strict with my opinions. (When learning I like to ask "Why? What is the reason for this thing to happen?") In addition to learning I like just generally like discussing about more "deep" subjects such as trauma. I'm interested in how other people view the world and what has affected them during their life. How could I get close to them? (However, getting close to people seems to be quite difficult for me.)
3. What’s something that’s obvious to you that most other people just don’t seem to get?
In ordinary life the one thing that I notice the most is the importance of planning things ahead and that having a structured environment where everything is on their rightful place is more efficient. Importance of visual harmony. I dislike chaos. Joking around when work is expected is another thing I cannot stand. Oh, and that human rights are not a subject of "opinion."
4. What’s something that’s obvious to everyone else that you just don’t seem to get?
Enjoying watching sports or driving a car. I just have never understood those things. Oh, and social cues. I just seem to get them very late or not at all.
5. Pick one or two of these prompts that stand out. How do you feel about: [honesty, leadership, harmony, morals, society, truth, management, emotion, efficiency, self-expression]
Truth is the thing I seek with everything. "Why am I like this? Why did this happen? What's the reason behing this?"
Efficiency is the thing I seek quite a lot. Usually it's about forming a routine on something so I don't separately have to think about it anymore. I would wish for having a set list of foods which I eat and make but unfortunately I get bored on them and have to try out new things or modify them somehow.
6. Pick another one or two prompts. How do you feel about [adrenaline, novelty, tradition, meditation, the future, the past, new ideas, comfort, perspective, brainstorming, excitement]
Meditation... Ah, I've tried. I'm not sure if it has helped but I try to remember to do that. I remember being a bit sceptic of it but reading about the benefits made me try it. Actually an one thing I would wish to find from meditation is "coming to truths, conclusions". I'm very interested in the use of intuition in everyday life, tbh. I wish I had Ni, but I think I don't.
The future. I'm optimistic and scared - it varies. I think about the future quite a lot. I would love to achieve something and be appreciatied but especially I would like to find a flexible but secure job I can do without getting bored and having confidence on my skills and being responsible for things.
In addition: comfort. I like to have comfort but I greatly value getting out of comfort zone too. Nothing feels comfortable if you're always comfortable, right?
IXTJ, probably INTJ.  Caution around new situations, needing to plan first, knowing before engaging - this is all typical of being an IXXJ. Your focus on “why did this happen, what’s the reason,” “coming to truths/conclusions,” thinking about the future a lot, and your interest in how people view the world sounds more like Ni than Si.
Your Te came out pretty clearly - coming off blunt, valuing structure and efficiency, forming a routine so you “don’t have to think about it anymore.” Te wants to “set and forget” systems for maximum efficiency.
Other minor points - difficulty getting close to people and confusion over social cues can point to low Feeling. Also, your disinterest in sports and driving could point to low Sensing (but I wouldn’t use that statement on it’s own to make a conclusion)

hi! I'm a small writer on wattpad and I was just wondering if you had any useful writing tips for me and other writers? I love your works and I would really love to know how you write so well! ♡
hello!!
i’d love to give writing tips! thank you so much for your kind words! but i’d say most of my writing skills come from trial and error and experience LOL but here’s what i really have to say:
GRAMMAR
i’m a huge grammar freak when it comes to writing and nothing’s a bigger turn off than reading a supposed emotional scene and spotting a huge ass grammar error lol
i’d suggest (if you aren’t already familiar with grammar) to study up on it
OR you can use sites such as grammarly and hemingway to catch mistakes for you (but they’re not always 100% accurate)
i feel like grammar is over-looked a lot in writing or maybe i’m just sensitive
even the simple wrong usage of the em dash triggers me these days lol (remember, it’s not ‘--’ it’s ‘—’ THERE’S A DIFFERENCE)
immaculate grammar means there’s one less thing that you have to worry about when putting your thoughts on-screen (or paper)
i studied grammar by buying an ACT test prep book LOL but you can probably learn it for free online
INSPIRATION
i think inspiration is really, REALLY important when it comes to writing
it’s always a struggle to come up with an original idea and to flesh it out is even harder at times
world-building is particularly a challenge (especially if that world is set in a futuristic dystopian world)
so i suggest you take time to get inspired (listen to music, get some fresh air, spend time with your loved ones, watch a movie, read a book etc)
writing always comes easier when you feel like doing it
once inspiration hits, don’t hesitate, DON’T DOUBT YOURSELF, just write
write first, edit later (that’s the #1 rule tbh)
gaining confidence through your inspiration is just as important as your writing itself
the writer is only as good as she thinks she is
if you get an idea, DO NOT WAIT TO FIND A NOTEBOOK TO WRITE IT DOWN. 85% of the time, you’ll forget the idea and that is the WORST MF feeling in the world. so please, write it on your phone, piece of scratch paper, on your hand—literally anything
CHARACTERS
my FAVORITE part!! i absolutely love coming up with characters
my biggest rule of thumb is to make a character that would actually fucking exist in the world LOL
well, i guess it depends on the plot or your story, but most times, your story will work better when the characters are realistic
remember, people want to connect to your characters (why else would they want to read about them??)
your characters should be balanced. there is no such thing as a perfect person. (also no such thing as an evil person,,, unless they’re psychologically damaged.) good traits come with bad traits. in fact, their good traits may even BE their bad traits!!
i.e. diligence. let’s say your character is diligent. it’s a good thing, perhaps. they may have a stable job and high income because they work very hard. but, in the end, their diligence turns them into a workaholic and that may cause problems with their relationships with loved ones
i always tell people who are starting off as writers to try to base characters off of the people around them (without making it insanely obvious, of course)—it’s more like picking and choosing traits from a personality pool LOL
if you’re writing romance, the character chemistry should be the plot of the story, which means you’ll have to make sure their personalities don’t exactly clash too much
here’s a character template i made that you can use (i actually use this character template for EVERY story)
PLOT
if you’re starting off as a writer, i can’t emphasize enough how important it is to PLOT
your story will literally flop if you don’t plot (cough cough that one wp ff after)
filler chapters or scenes are ALL RIGHT!! (that’s a common misconception) but they’re only okay IF they offer some insight about the characters’ personalities OR if they deepen the relationship between two characters (probably the future romantic couple)
i personally bullet plot (which means i just sit down and just word-vomit the contents of the story in a bullet-point form)
but the way people plot really differs, so i’ll leave it up to you
here’s a plot template i made that you can use (i don’t use this template very often anymore—only for longer stories, but it helps for beginners!)
sometimes, it works to leave the ending of your story unplotted (but only if you haven’t yet a single clue on how to end your story)
i find that once you write your characters a bit, it becomes easier to figure out what they would do in the future (and thus configure the ending)
A VERY IMPORTANT PART IN PLOT ACTUALLY INVOLVES THE CHARACTERS
your characters MAKE the plot
their choices will DEFINE the plot
if you had different characters, your story would turn out very differently
so always make sure your characters are CONSISTENT (unless they have subtle character development)
i.e. say you have a character who is sort of a curmudgeon lol and they’re living as a recluse and they hate people and romance. you can’t suddenly have them fall in love with the hot neighbor next door. you have to shape the plot so that the story is about the main character learning to understand others and willing to love someone who’s not herself
i.e. but say that you have a character who is a romantic-freak and idealizes romance. when the hot neighbor next door moves in, she’d be all over him (and planning the wedding the moment she sees him lol). the story would probably be about her learning how to be level-headed and lose just a few of her unrealistic ideals. the story would be about maturity, overall. there is such a huge difference in the plot just by switching ONE character
DIALOGUE
i just felt like dialogue had to be addressed because i think it’s SOOO important
dialogue makes up the relationship between two characters. you can REALLY tell where they lie on the line of friendship/relationship just by reading the way they talk to each other
a rule of thumb is to READ the dialogue out loud as you type it out
if you can read it out loud without thinking ‘well that’s not fucking realistic’ or ‘that sounds like a robot not a human’ then you’re usually good
there’s nothing wrong with repeating the word ‘said’ or ‘say(s)’
i’d actually say use other descriptions such as ‘yells,’ ‘whispers,’ ‘sighs’ sparingly. because no one on planet earth sighs 47 times in one conversation
i.e. “you’re not dead yet,” she says.
this is simple. it works. but you can make it better
i.e. “you’re not dead yet, huh?” she scoffs.
even better
i.e. “you’re not dead yet, huh?” she scoffs, shooting him a disdainful look before turning the other way in disgust
great!
try to split up long quotes!!
i.e. “it was always blue outside where i’m from. sometimes we had scheduled rainy days for the private gardens and stuff. you know, at least the food there was good. way better than the crap we're forced to eat here,” he says
it’s just a huge quote block right now
the words blend in with each other
and honestly, if you skim through it, you probably forgot what he’s even talking about lol
but we can fix that
i.e. “it was always blue outside where i’m from,” he says, gazing up rather sadly at the darkened gray skies of the run-down city. “sometimes we had scheduled rainy days for the private gardens and stuff.” he shakes his head in disbelief as if he can’t accept how desolate his home had deteriorated into over the past few years. “you know, at least the food there was good. way better than the crap we’re forced to eat here.” he glares at the muddy bowl of mystery soup he had neglected to touch since it was served
the paragraph is significantly longer, but you’re able to visualize what is happening in this scene much better!!
dialogue is my favorite part of any story LOL so i’m always open to giving more advice if you need it!
NARRATION
oh god this is so fucking important
i write in 2nd pov PRESENT tense and i’ve been consistent with this for over a year now
it’s important to probably choose a tense to write in; you typically have two options: present or past tense
i personally prefer present tense because it gives the feel of the story unfolding right before your eyes in a very linear way
past tense kind of means things have ALREADY happened, so you have more leeway to jump around on the timeline of your story
i recommend writing present tense if you’re writing action, especially, but otherwise, it’s completely up to you
just STICK to one tense. nothing is more confusing than reading a sentence with two different tenses lol
i.e. he sighed as he looks over at the fireplace with deep sorrow in his eyes. “now i’ll never fucking qualify for the championships,” he gripes as he rubbed his hand frustratingly over his forehead
like... what?? pick one and GO WITH IT
i.e. he sighed as he looked over at the fireplace with deep sorrow in his eyes. “now i’ll never fucking qualify for the championships,” he griped as he rubbed his hand frustratingly over his forehead
OR
i.e. he sighs as he looks over at the fireplace with deep sorrow in his eyes. “now i’ll never fucking qualify for the championships,” he gripes as he rubs his hand frustratingly over his forehead
READ
i cannot emphasize this enough
READ. like literally if you don’t have time to read, you don’t have time to write periodt
reading is so SO important when you write
if you haven’t yet found your writing style, reading will SAVE you
you need to read your favorite works, analyze why you love them so much and try to emulate that writing style
after you’ve tried emulating the writing style, try to tweak things to YOUR taste until you’ve developed your very own style
it’s not easy developing your writing style. i’ve been writing for a decade give or take and i refound my writing style like two years ago LOL
the process takes patience and diligence
you don’t even always have to read good books, either
literally sometimes pick up a bad book just to see why it’s so bad and make sure you don’t make that mistake in YOUR writing lol
also, you get better at writing when you begin to edit others’ writings—it makes you self aware of the mistakes that YOU might make
RESEARCH
if you’re writing about territory you’re unfamiliar with, RESEARCH IS GOING TO BE YOUR BEST FRIEND
please don’t write about heavy concepts involving mental health, gang violence etc. without either researching it or experiencing it
your job as a writer is NOT to relay false, unrealistic information to your readers
sure, your story is FICTIONAL, but that gives you no right to romanticize something dark/serious for your pure enjoyment
it doesn’t matter if it’s fictional or not. some things are not meant to be written about in a light-hearted, romanticized way
there’s no such thing as enough research
i’ve underresearched a lot of topics that i’ve written, and i actually regret it looking back because i know for sure that if i wrote it with a little bit more knowledge, it’d become better and more realistic and OVERALL MORE READABLE
there is always more research available online. it’s fucking 2020. use your resources online lol
CONFIDENCE
it takes time to become a good writer
no one fucking wakes up one day and can write like a god
so you can always be in peace when you’re not satisfied with your writing
because 1) there is someone who is worse than you out there lol 2) you will IMPROVE (only if you put in the effort) 3) you may not be in the mood to write today, so take a break!! (it doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t write; you just need time and inspo)
confidence comes with experience
experience comes with perseverance
keep that in mind
you will become a great writer one day, and when that day comes, you will know it. you’ll feel it
the day will come when you’ll be able to sit down and write advice for others. if you can teach it, that’s when you know you know it (:
so keep writing and you’ll get there!
idk if this rambling even helped, but my shorter writing advice post is here! wish you a good time on wp!

Hi how do I become a male witch for real to support to women I love who is a witch and because I'm honestly curious and interested in being a male witch
✧・゚:* Sᴏ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ᴘʀᴀᴄᴛɪᴄᴇ ᴛʜᴇ ᴄʀᴀғᴛ ᴀɴᴅ ʟᴇᴀʀɴ sᴏᴍᴇ ᴍᴀɢɪᴄᴋ ᴀs ᴀ ᴍᴀʟᴇ ᴡɪᴛᴄʜ! *:・゚✧ Merry Meet!  ☆ Thank you for being my first ask! First I would like to begin with the fact that being a witch means something different to everyone.
” Witch for me is my most powerful self. Deeply grounded. Always healing and protecting myself and those I love. Bending attraction into my direction. Spreading peace and love wherever I go. Respecting nature. Following my intuition. Calling on my guides. Working with my inner wolf. Connecting with myself on all levels. Increasing my vibration. Meditation. Gratitude. Love. Light. This is what witch means to me. ” -Lunas Grimoire " I think that magic plays a part in my day-to-day effort to visualize goals, deal with problems, and connect myself to nature. Spells and visualization are all about intentionality and channeling your life force!"  -HS “To put it simply, witchcraft is the practice of magick. This isn't to be confused with magic, which is what magicians do. Magick is a series of techniques a witch uses to harness energy (both external and internal) in order to change one's surroundings as well as one's self. It's also important to note that being a witch is not the same thing as being Wiccan. Unlike witchcraft, Wicca is a religion. However, it is common to meet witches who are Wiccan and vice versa. And most importantly, anyone can become a witch. Witchcraft is truly for everyone.” -The Witch Mommy ☆ So what is a witch?! ”First, many people do still use “witch” to mean “someone who worships the Devil and/or evil and who engages in gratuitous malevolence.” Present-day Witches generally feel that such a definition of “witch” results merely from Christian politics and propaganda. True, there are now “Satanic” churches, the most prominent having been Anton LeVay’s Church of Satan and the Temple of Set, and its members do call themselves “witches,” which certainly confuses outsiders. However, as J. Gordon Melton has pointed out, the members of these churches are actually atheistic, hedonistic, and egoistic in their ethics. Pagan Witches regard Satanist witches as Christian heretics and not Pagan at all. Setting all that aside, we can look at the more positive usages of the term.First, “witch” is often used to mean “someone who practices some form of magic.” But “folk magic” is ubiquitous, and those who practice it usually consider themselves to be devout members of the faith community around them, just with a special gift. They very rarely seem to think that their magical practice constitutes a unique religion. Nevertheless, there are quite a few such “magical witches,” and they logically must be considered part of the Craft movement.Second, “witch” is often used to mean “someone who has and uses unusual psychic talents.” It can thus be applied to Spiritualist mediums, to clairvoyant readers, to diviners, and so on. Again, such people almost always consider them to be members of the surrounding faith community, just with a special talent, and likewise do not regard that talent as constituting a different religion.Third, “witch” is now (and only recently) used to mean “someone who honors or worships the Old Gods” of whatever pantheon, though “Pagan” is also used with this meaning. Here the self-concept is that one is pursuing a religious path different from that of the surrounding community, but such pursuit does not necessarily involve any use of magic or psychic talents. It is only within the Pagan movement as inspired by Gardnerian Witchcraft that these three different meanings have been bundled together into the current concept of the Pagan Witch as practicing a unique and magical religion. At first, before the rise of the festival movement in America about 1980, a fourth meaning of “Witch” was included in this bundle: “someone who has been initiated as a member of an organized group (yes, a coven) that practices Witchcraft as a Pagan religion or as an apprentice of a master teacher of witchcraft.” Once the festivals had evolved to provide people with a way to celebrate the Wheel of the Year, and once enough “how to” books had been published to give people all the information they needed to practice the Craft as a solitary or only within their own families, joining a coven was no longer the only way to follow Wicca or a more generic form of Witchcraft as a spiritual path. There had been some solitaries even in the 1960s and 1970s, but as a result of the festivals, around 1980 the movement divided into two categories, one being a laity, who now constitute at least 90 percent of all Witches in America, the other being those who have been initiated into and practice the Craft within a coven or equivalent group. However, a First-Degree initiate of a coven is not regarded as having any special authority or expertise, given that anyone can learn from the published books about 99 percent of what that initiate would know. Instead, there is another level of meaning.” -Aidan Kelly Before you get started you must understand, there are many different paths or well types of witchcraft. ☆ The most common types usually include: 1: GARDNERIAN WITCH: A Gardnerian Witch is someone who follows the belief system of Gardnerian Wicca, which was created by Gerald Garner in the 1950s.  Gardnerian Wicca is hierarchical system that consists of a high priest and priestess as well as various initiations. So, one is not a Gardnerian Witch until they have learned their specific traditions and have gone through proper initiation. 2: ALEXANDRIAN WITCH: Alexandrian Witchcraft is like Guardian Wicca in that it is a formalized belief system which contains it’s own traditions and initiations.  Alexandrian witches follow some of the similar traditions in Guardian Wicca, but also incorporate ceremonial magic as well as the Qabalah. 3. SOLITARY WITCH: A solitary witch is someone who performs spellwork and rituals alone and without a coven.  This may be by choice, or perhaps they just haven’t yet found a group of fellow witches they would like to work with.  A solitary witch can incorporate various different paths based on their interest and may or may not use witchcraft as part of a wider spiritual path or religion. 4. ECLECTIC WITCH: An Eclectic witch is someone who pulls from various witchcraft traditions for their spellwork and rituals.  They rely on a variety of different cultures, beliefs, and systems to formulate their own personal witchcraft practice which may change and evolve over time. 5. TRADITIONAL WITCH: A traditional witch is someone who takes a historical approach to witchcraft.  They look at old grimoires, witch trials, various witch lore, and historical accounts to lay the foundation for their own spells and rituals.  Often traditional witches focus on working with the nature and history of the place they live and may work with the genius loci, or the local spirits. 6. HEREDITARY WITCH: A Hereditary witch is someone who was born into a family that practices witchcraft.  Usually their knowledge is passed down through generations and each family may have their own traditions and belief system.  Though, just because someone is born in a witch family it does not necessarily mean that they will be more knowledgeable or powerful than a non-hereditary witch. 7. HEDGE WITCH: A Hedge witch works with the liminal spaces and the spirit realm.  In the past a ‘hedge’ would mark a boundary of a village or settlement and thus represents the boundary between our physical reality and the spirit world.  A hedge witch may be skilled at crossing that boundary through practices like astral travel. 8. KITCHEN WITCH: A kitchen witch enjoys making their home and surroundings a sacred space.  They often like to incorporate witchcraft with their cooking and put their energy and focus into to the food and the meals they create.  They care deeply about the ingredients, and may have their own herb and vegetable garden. 9. GREEN WITCH: Green witches are extremely nature based.  They are likely to be in-tune with the seasons and often use natural materials to create their own magical tools.  They most likely try to perform all their spellwork and rituals outside in nature when possible. 10. COSMIC WITCH: A cosmic witch incorporates astrology and astronomy into their witchcraft.  They most likely closely follow the alignment of the planets and they will often will coordinate their spells and rituals based on the location of the planets and the moon. ☆ Labels.. Labels.. and more labels! Also, here are a few labels that are commonly passed around as well! It’s very important to remember that labels should never limit your practice. These are just classifications that I find useful in describing myself, and others have used to describe themselves. This list was made purely for fun. This is, by no means, a complete list. You do not have to ‘fit’ into any of these. A person’s craft is unique to them, that’s what makes it so awesome. (Warning: you may see some repeats from the previous list!) Omni Witch: A bookworm and a know it all, this type of witch studies and practices all the fields of magick. They are innately curious about everything, and love to learn. They are talkative and eager to share the massive amount of knowledge they have absorbed. Eclectic Witch: The Boho witch. She uses a combination or mix of whatever paths suit her best. Typically specializes in 2-4 different sects of the craft. She often will wear a mix-match of clothing, but enjoys long flowing things. She tends to be very random and eccentric, but is friendly nonetheless. Kitchen Witch: This type of witch uses easily obtained items and weaves magick into every aspect of their life. They are particularly fond of cooking, arts and crafts, sewing, cleaning, gardening and baking. They are skilled in potions, herbology, and subtle magick. Cottage Witch: A Witch who focuses on hearth magick. Much like the Kitchen witch, but with less emphasis on the cooking. They are the homemakers, the ones who decorate the house for the holidays. Usually empaths who are very sensitive to the people around them. Practical Witch: A branch of kitchen witch, they are adept at spellwork, and use their magick for everyday, mundane things. They adore the use of sigils and put them everywhere. Very down to earth individuals, who enjoy experimenting with ways to use magick to may their daily life easier and more enjoyable. Stitch Witch: A brand of Kitchen and Cottage witchery that holds magickal fabric work in high regard. They focus primarily on knot and stitch magick. Very scatter-brained individuals. Their room are always in disarray, fabric and thread everywhere. Usually fond of cosplay. LOVE making Halloween costumes for their family and friends. Green Witch: The woodland witches, these earthy individuals protect plants and love to garden. They usually are adept at spirit communication, hearing and responding to the needs of their many leaf-bearing friends. They thrive in natural environments such as forests, lakes, rivers and gardens. Green witches enjoy sunlight, growing plants and collecting rocks. They focus on holistic medicine and are learned healers. They are very familiar with their local region, having memorized all the species of plants, trees, insects, wildlife and flowers. They truly love the earth. Crystal Witch: A branch of Green witchery, these witches primarily work with stones, gems, crystals, and rocks. They LOVE geology, spend a lot of time hiking and collecting crystals. Usually very organized individuals that are in tune with the earth. They always know when the next local rock and mineral show is. Usually broke because they are always buying new rocks. So many rocks. Fucking rocks everywhere omg. Creature Witch: Another branch of Green witchery, mixed with spirit working and hedgecraft, these witches primarily work with Magickal and Astral creatures and spirits. They are very friendly people, and get along with all kinds of physical, and not so physical creatures. They collect fossils and bones and skulls and know the names and personalities of each spirit attached to them.Hedge Witch: A witch that lives between two worlds. They easily cross over into Elsewhere, the astral realm, and do so with ease. Often skilled at working with magickal creatures and familiars, they are very creative and artistic individuals. They are also very adept at psychometry, spirit communication, energy work, and time travel. Also called Astral Witches. Energy Witch: Witches that perform all of their magic internally. Their magic is one of pure energy, using circles cast in their heads and their imaginations to bring their will to life. Are usually shy and keep to themselves. They enjoy divination and astral projection. Also called Intrinsic Witches. Shadow Worker: A combination of energy and hedge magick, the shadow worker tames and summons Shadows of their own past and personality. They regret nothing, are very in tune with their emotions, and spend a lot of time meditating. They are not afraid to confront their mistakes, because accepting the flawed pieces of their personality gives them power. Spirit Worker: A Witch who communes with the dead spirits of humans, animals, and others entities. Some can even communicate with the spirits of trees, rocks, and man-made items. They are usually very outspoken, opinionated people. They use spirit boards and pendulums, among many other tools. They enjoy taking strolls in graveyards and having casual chats with the dead. Also called Mediums. Exorcist: A branch of Spirit Worker. They are usually hereditary, clairvoyant and raised into their practice. They learn their craft as it is passed down from their family members. They practice the archaic tradition of exorcism, aka banishment of dark or foul entities. Very somber individuals, who try their best to be optimistic. Oracle/Diviner: Branch of Spirit worker. Witches who primarily focus their practice on divination. Tarot, runes, pendulums, spirit boards, scrying, crystal gazing, aeromancy, stichomancy, sea gazing, animal gazing, bird watching, lynchomancy, ceromancy, astrology, numerology, amathomancy, dream interpretation, shufflemancy, tea leaf reading, people watching, palm reading, face reading. You name it, they probably know how to do it. Usually clairvoyant and have a number of other psychic abilities. Chaos Witch: A witch who uses baneful magick in their craft. They enjoy working with bones and are skilled at channeling and communicating with spirits. They will sometimes use demons, storm magick, blood magick, and cursing in their practice. They fear nothing. Commonly mislabeled ‘black’ or ‘dark’ witch. Which is not correct. Tsk tsk. Necromancer: A branch of Chaos magick, these witches take spirit working a step further, and are adept at communicating and controlling the dead. Necromancers usually have a familiar ‘wraith’ that acts much like an astral or spirit guide. Some can even raise the dead for a period of time to converse with them. Blood Witch: Another branch of Chaos magick, these witches primarily use blood in their rituals. They have a high pain tolerance, care little about what others think or say, and are very set in their ways. Some do it to prove how strong they are or devotion to their deities. Nonetheless, nice people once you get to know them. Perhaps a bit misunderstood. Sun Witch: A witch who draws their power more from the sun, than the moon as most witches tend to do. Adept at fire magic and are usually very spirited individuals. They use candles often in their practice, and love to throw barbecues and bonfires with their many friends. They enjoy sunbathing. Their magick comes in giant bursts and they will often use a lot of energy at once. Lunar Witch: A witch who primarily draws their power from the moon. They adore her and are usually adept at making moon water and knowing exactly what phase of the moon it is at any given time. They do not fear the dark, do much of their magick after the sun goes down, and have the ability to speak with the Lady Luna herself. These witches also may choose (or be chosen by) one of the moons of another planet, such as Miranda or Europa., and will work with that particular celestial body. Star Witch: Not to be confused with a Space witch, who works with all of the cosmos, primarily aliens and astrology. Star witches draw their power from constellations, stars, and the sun. They love star gazing, have star charts hanging on the walls of their room, and never miss a meteor shower. Very chipper individuals who always want to go to the planetarium rather than out to see a movie or to the park. They may also work with planets as well as stars. Storm Witch: This breed of witch is both terrifying and thrilling. They have a great sense of humor, and are usually very cryptic. They give zero fucks what people think of them and march to the beat of their own drum. They whistle up the winds and summon lightning. These witches are usually very adept at cursing and fear nothing. They like horror movies, cloudy weather, and casting emotionally charged spells. They are empathic individuals and always feel things to the extreme, there is no middle ground with them. Its black or white. Winter Witch: Witches who reside in the colder climates of the world. They cast snowstorms, collect hail and make poppets from snow. Blizzards are their best friends. They love cold weather, and usually draw their power from the snow and clouds, rather than the sun or the moon, as neither are usually very visible during storms. Despite their chilly disposition, they are warm and friendly once you get to know them. Sea Witch: These witches hone their craft near a body of water, and center their practice around it. Some sea witches will work with fresh water, such as rivers or lakes (in which case they will usually call themselves ‘river’ or ‘lake’ witches), some with the ocean. Sea witches without immediate access to a body of water are called ‘land-locked’. They often form connections with fish of all kinds, know their local areas very well, are good at predicting the weather, and are friendly with the nymphs, fae and dragons of their region. They enjoy collecting sand and seashells and are adept at storm and sun magic. Swamp Witch: A witch who works in the rivers and bayous of the world. They are adept at spirit communication and are versed in the traditions of their area. They enjoy wandering around their swamps, meeting familiars and befriending creepy crawlies. Their craft is usually a mix of traditional southern witchcraft and Hoodoo. They are very warm, hospitable individuals, but you should NEVER cross a Swamp witch. They are not afraid to curse your ass. These witches favor the healing powers of mud, enjoy mixing potions, reading next to a roaring fire and being with their family. Witch of the Waste: Desert witches who work with sand and limited supplies. Hardy herbs are their best friends and they often use a lot of bone magic. They have an extensive fossil and skull collection and are constantly pouring over old field guilds for their local area. They can whip up sandstorms in the blink of an eye, and befriend scorpions, snakes, and coyotes alike. They are an enduring species of witch, weathering everything the world has to throw at them. Few things dampen their spirits. Urban Witch: City witches who graffiti sigils on abandoned buildings, grow herbs in pots in their apartments and are very technologically savvy. Technomagic is their jam, usually rocking enchanted headphones, weaving spells from their favorite songs and using their cell phones as scrying mirrors.Tech Witch: A branch of Urban witchcraft, they work with html and other computer codes, have virtual altars to their deities, use old circuit boards as wards, old keypads from cell phones and laptops as spirit boards, and old broken electronic screens for scrying. They typically keep their grimoires as blogs. Very intelligent witches who are always on tumblr. Pop Culture Witch: A branch of Urban witchcraft. Witches that craft their spells based on popular music, movies, books and poetry. They are artistic and very educated and love to laugh. They can also curse the hell out of you. It’s not all Disney movies, folks. Artistic Witch: A witch usually covered in paint from head to toe. They draw, paint, dance, sing, and sew their way through their practice. They enchant their tablet pens and paintbrushes, use storm water for their watercolors, and strike real emotion into their audience. Dance Witch: Branch of Artistic Witch. They use dance in their practice, and are very physically sound. They may practice one on many kinds of dance, or even martial art. And they do so skillfully. They are usually very quiet people, but not at all shy or unsure of themselves. They would rather express their thoughts through movement and body language than actually speaking. Theatrical Witch: Branch of Artistic witch. A player. They act and perform in plays to honor their deities, spend countless hours perfecting their lines and adore being dramatic. Very charismatic people who take pride in their work. Persistent. Never take no for an answer. Melodic Witch: A branch of Artistic that primarily uses song and musical instruments in their practice. They are very busy people, constantly practicing whatever instrument has currently caught their fancy. They easily make friends with Sirens and Lorelai in their common love of song, and attract Fae and Nymphs alike with the sounds of their voices. Fae Witch: These witches are educated on all types of faeries, but usually prefer to work with a certain species or one they are familiar with. They are usually very playful and mischievous individuals, mimicking the creatures they work with. They are very attracted to shiny things and are easily offended. Nymphatic Witch: These cutie pies are usually Hellenistic in their choice of deities, and are well versed in all the species of Nymphs, what they like, and where they live. They usually work with the ones that live in their local area and mirror them in their personalities. They hate wearing clothes, but when they do they prefer pastel colors. They are very whimsical, pleasant people to be around. Draconic Witch: These witches are fearsome. They are knowledgable in all the species of dragons, their personalities and their migration patterns. They usually will have one or more dragon companion from their local area. They are skilled in astral projecting, storm magick and cursing. They love to collect things such as books and crystals. Vampiric Witch: A witch that either works with or is a vampire. They feed off the energy or emotions of others and use it to power their magick. They tend to be kind of clingy, but they are loyal as fuck and treasure their few friends. They have many secrets, and usually a dark past. They enjoy using blood in magick and are adept at healing and cursing. They are kind of vain, love gothic clothing, jewelry and expensive things. Astro/Space Witch: A witch who works with aliens. Usually very paranoid individuals, they adore star gazing, always know when the next astronomical event is, and love the documentary TV Show ‘ancient aliens’. They are usually adept at astral travel, astrology and sun magick. Demonic Witch: These witches work with Demons. They differ from Exorcists in that they actually summon them and get them to go their bidding, rather than casting them out. Can usually hold a grudge a hella long time. Not people to mess with. Stubborn and bull headed. Otherkin Witch: A witch who is Otherkin. They relate to an inhuman or an animal in either personality or spirit, or believe they are a reincarnation of such. They behaviors and choice in deities and certain practices in their craft will usually reflect their kind of Kin. An example would be that a Felinekin might like using catnip in their rituals, and might call on Bastet, Sekhmet or Freya in their magick. Ceremonial Witch: A combination of ceremonial magic and witchcraft. They focus on rituals and formal casting of magic. With robes and altars and everything. Also called Ritualistic Witchcraft or Traditional Witchcraft. Solitary Witch: A witch who works in isolation. Usually very independent and stubborn, they take orders from no one. Subtle Witch: A witch who cannot be openly witchy due to their family, friends or environment. Hereditary Witch: Someone who is born into a witch family and brought up learning about witchcraft, or folk magic. They take great pride in certain traditional magic passed down through the generations. Secular Witch: A witch who does not involve religion in their craft. Now that you’re a bit more familiar with the paths and labels- ☆ Let’s hit the books! Many people assume that becoming a witch simply means giving yourself the title of witch and then casting the occasional spell. This would be like buying yoga pants and mala beads, and calling yourself a yogi. But the truth is, becoming a witch takes a lot of hard work, discipline, and time. Therefore, after you decide which kind of witchcraft you are interested in, it's time to start studying. In order to learn about your craft, get your hands on as many books and articles as possible. Thanks to the internet, you can now watch videos online about becoming a witch, and you can even take witchcraft courses. Being a novice witch can be very overwhelming, so it's also a good idea to find a guide. An experienced witch can recommend reading, teach you some techniques for spells, and encourage you along your journey. ☆ Next gather your supplies!! You can never have to much in my opinion! Of course, you may also wish to buy some supplies in order to practice magick and cast spells. While you don't need to buy everything at once, here are some of the most common witchcraft supplies and tools: Mortar and pestle: These are used to mix herbs and other ingredients in order to create your blends and remedies.
Crystals: Crystals can help purify a sacred space before a ritual, as well as provide healing and protection.
Wand: This is a short stick (often selected from specific trees) used to cast a circle
Salt: Typically used to cast a protective circle
Book of Shadows: This is where you will organize and record things you are learning within the craft, as well as spells and rituals.
Herbs: These are used in spell workings, rituals, and magickal preparations.
God and Goddess statues: Used to decorate the altar and as a focal point during rituals, to draw attention to a particular god or goddess.
Altar: This is where you will hold sacred space, practice your craft, as well as keep your crystals, statues, and other witchcraft supplies. While there is more we could include on this list, these are the basic supplies witches use. As you refine your area of focus, you will have a better idea of the supplies that your brand of witchery calls for. ☆ What about spells?! Now, you're probably wondering, "Ok, but how do I cast a spell?".. The truth is, as frustrating as it sounds, there is no exact answer on how to cast a spell. This is because every witch is different and every witch has their own path. This means that a spell that works for one witch may not work for another. Learning to cast spells that work for you takes research, practice, and introspection. That being said, it can help to have some basic guidelines to get started. Then, you can tweak spells based on your own individual needs. This Simple Pleasures in Life spell is a great place to start. As you can see, becoming a witch and practicing witchcraft involves a lot more than just waving a wand around. ☆ Witch Youtube Channels: https://www.youtube.com/user/VideoJamGarden https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZfyjjVFNqNBLRg6p964AWQ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCO6HYyldrzr3fTUWXLyJ3yg https://www.youtube.com/channel/UChHS4NI6U4XgCuYgsrygVCA https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCoJQafFd9es78EhaqXl4WNA ♡  All credit goes to their due sources.  ♡

•Ice Cream once played Family feud because he is a fan of that show since teenage years. Him and his group played together then won the money.
•his partner Bezai, Carmelo always been beside him and always go with him around for no reason. Because they are partners together, Ice cream and Egg are food related which is why he always have to follow him.
•he is Addy's playmate when he is out streaming. When he isn't playing on his desktop, they go play on the couch play video games on TV, PC and go to the mall to play arcade games to get prices.
•Ice Crean respectedly and acted politely to woman and young ladies. Since he knew about Ninja banned to play with a female player, he followed his advice onto not playing with a female player but he would act courteous when out of streaming or gaming.
•He met Egg when he went to have an interview together before the Masked Singer season 2.
•He can't say any swear words since he never swear in his life. He did hear people swearing but for him, he remains clean to his mouth especially in front of children.
•since his eyes remain close all the time and everyday, he has a emoji that looks exactly his look. His emojis are actually OwO but closing eyes: —w— , ^w^, UwU, ~w~, >w<, XwX, =w=

The Compassionate Hero: Heartbeat
Name: Kalia McKenzie
Quirk: Crowd Control. Basically they're an empath with some telekinetic powers.
Quirk Stuff
Empathy:
Their empathy is tied to their physical senses, with some control over which sense they want to filter it through. Depending on which sense they use, they can gather different types of information.
Anything that obscures their senses also obscures their empathic abilities. For example, even though visually auras look like lights and they can find people in the dark, they wouldn't be able to see auras through thick smoke, they wouldn't be able to hear auras at a loud concert, and so on.
It also works the other way around in that powerful emotions (or a large enough crowd) can drown out the physical input from whatever sense they're using.
The crowd thing is a double-edged sword though, because they're able to vibe off the ambient emotional energy in the environment like a satelite dish, and store it away for later.
One time when they were really young they went to a sporting event at a stadium with a crowd of about 10,000 people and they had so much energy they didn't need to sleep for three days.
They can also use their claws to drain energy from other people. This leaves the target in a sort of "funk" and unable to process emotions, and may lead to memory issues if they drain too much. They only use this power as a last resort, obviously.
Telekinesis:
Works a lot like their empathy, in that it's just as physical as it is psychic. They can use it at range, but using it as tactile telekinesis is vastly more energy efficient.
They grew up thinking they just had a physical enhancement quirk with a weird requirement (their father could enhance his body by absorbing electrical energy) until their mother (a telepath) noticed that the things they picked up got cloaked in their aura as well.
They can use their own emotional power for telekinesis, but when they come down from their power trip... See that point about how they can drain people of emotional energy? That happens to them instead.
Other Quirk Stuff:
Their father's side of the family has this weird gargoyle aesthetic going for some inexplicable reason. It's where they get their scales, claws and tail from, but also why they're so beefy in general.
Strangely skilled at throwing things with their tail.
Because they've been using their empathy to navigate the world since they were really young they never learned how faces work so they technically have a form of prosopagnosia.
Their claws grow super fast and tend to get in the way of grabbing things so every few days they spend like 2 hours with an emery board filing them down. Really good at manicures as a result.
Other Stuff:
They wear their heart on their sleeve 100% of the time.
Likes cute things. Will squeal and cry tears of joy for both babies and animals but especially baby animals.
Gets attached to people really easily.
They're pretty tall for an AFAB person and if you are shorter than them, and they ever give you a hug, you have been adopted.
Their costume colors are on purpose they're super duper ace.
Basically growing up they would always sense this weird emotion coming from other people but never were able to feel it themselves, so one day they got fed up and just asked someone about it.
"You! What emotion is that?"
"Huh?"
"The way you're looking at that person. What's that you're feeling?"
"I... like her."
"I know what like feels like. That's not a regular like."
"I'm... attracted to her I guess?"
"Hmm... Tell me more about this... 'Attracted' feeling."
Much like not being able to understand faces very well, they never really saw gender as an object. They don't necessarily have a problem being refered to as a girl, but they never saw themselves as one. They also tend to refer to everyone in gender-neutral terms unless told otherwise.
More of an investigations specialist but can and will throw the fuck down.
Basically like that "I'm a healer but..." meme but instead of healer it's investigator and instead of a gun it's just These Hands.
Had no idea how to design a costume they literally just said "Gimme a hoodie, Cargo pants, and boots, use these colors, put a heartbeat motif on it, and if you make it skin-tight I'm suing."

First post 8/2/22 6:28AM
This is just a personal diary to get me through my long years as a general surgery resident. I hope to share some of the lessons I've learned as well as other nontangible values and ideals that I've kept close to me on my journey toward becoming a surgeon.
I have COVID. It sucks, but I'm lucky that I have medications, am triple vaccinated, and have people around me checking in on me and getting me food and stuff. I can't stop coughing, so I can't sleep. Thus, I decided to blog since I have nothing better to do during quarantine.
Here are some lessons I've learned in the first month of residency.
Lesson 1.
Be present in the moment...which is easier said than done. My mind vacillates constantly, and it is impossible for me to follow anyone else's train of thought on an auditory level. I think the reason I did well in school was that I learned nearly everything visually. I think it might have something to do with English being my second language, but that might just be an excuse. At work, I'm learning that I need to constantly be attuned to my seniors and everyone else around me. It's been a rather tough adjustment, given that I'm the type of person who daydreams frequently and lives inside of my own head. It's a work in progress and I'm excited to develop this particular skill.
Lesson 2.
It's hard not to like everyone I meet and see the most beautiful things about them; I am a people person. I love being around others and am an extrovert by nature. I tend to see the best in others and I always assume the best in everyone, even when the facts point the other way. It is a great quality in that everyone is a friend at first, and I am one of few people that relatively pass little judgment onto others. But sometimes, it can be detrimental to my well-being simply because I keep investing my time in people who do not enrich my life with a healthy relationship.
I should be jaded and cold, after everything that I've been through. Other than the lack of deaths in my immediate family, I really have endured magnitudes more than most have and have been able to pick myself back up and march right along- as if nothing had ever happened. It's gotten to a point where I've made so many mistakes and gone through so much that I don't even need to process it anymore. The past, the pain, all of it simply exists with me and it neither bothers me nor scares me. My past defines me, just as they do for everyone else, in the sense that these experiences have shaped me into who I am today. Theoretically, had I never gone through xyz, would I be a better person today? Or is it the converse, that I am a better person as a result of accepting that the painful lessons served as a nidus for positive change? I tend to ruminate on the good times rather than the bad, resulting in my having to go through yet another recapitulation of trauma or unnecessary stress. And yet, it seems as if I never learn from my mistakes, because I always see the best in people.
I wonder about the pain that you've been through and how it's made you a better person. I think about the suffering that my drug-abusing patients have gone through, cycle after cycle, and admire them for their tenacity to try yet another time. I always spend the extra 30 minutes a day trying to convince my meth-abusing patient to stop using because his or her life is worth living and they have a lifetime to look forward to-- one in which they are not enslaved to their addiction. Nothing will make me give up on my perhaps childish and naïve, but very necessary hope for everyone who is struggling out there. Because if your own doctor, friend, sister, daughter, or lover gives up on you and doesn't make the extra effort, how will it be possible to live a life that is still meaningful after death?
