I finally got my own copy of this precious little book. Honestly, if I had the money, I'd always have some spare copies in my bag so that I could hand them out to all of my friends and relatives and basically anyone I meet. Am I a pseudofeminist?

This morning, as I slipped on my waterproof boots and pulled over my strategically pink hoodie in preparation to march hand and hand with my fellow woman, I realized one thing…. my daughter was still asleep. All this time I spent scouring the caverns of my mind for the perfect tagline that somehow simultaneously says “notice me” but also “I don't need you to notice me to be worthy”. All that kinetic energy I’ve stored, just waiting for my moment to be heard, well, it would have to wait. Because my daughter was asleep. You know, that peaceful sleep that only a toddler can have after a long night of restlessness. The kind of sleep that begs to be left alone. The kind of sleep that lets a mother enjoy her black coffee in sweet silence while she watches the fog dissipate with the morning sun. Yeah, my daughter was that asleep. However, once I had admitted defeat, that is when my true power arose. That is the moment I realized that it is not my stride that will make a change, it is my words. I am a writer of words and my strength lies somewhere within there. Action is not always walking the walk, sometimes it also needs to be talking the talk.

I often question my level of feminism. What does that word mean to me? I wear makeup, I desperately cling to beauty standards that were not meant to fit me, yet I yearn for the power that is innately thrusted upon men for simply being men. I want to be formidable and instill fear in the eyes of my oppressor. But at the same time I also want that exact oppressor to want me. I want him to be so infatuated that he can think of nothing besides me and the curve of my neck. How can I be so defiant yet so desirous? Can the two exist in the same person, they must because somehow I find they exist in the same breath.

So today, instead of marching alongside my fellow woman in a sign of solitude, I’ll stay home with my black coffee and try to find a way to make my words stand in my place. Try to reach out to others who live in a dichotomous cycle of wanting more power, but also being afraid of the consequences of taking it. Are there others out there who feel this way? Or are we all so black and white that we fall within the boundaries of either hating men or wanting them. I don't know. All I know is that I want the right to my body. To make my own choices based on what I need and not what someone else expects of me. I want to wear a short skirt and decide who gets to look under it. I want to stay at home with my daughter because it brings me joy, not because my husbands job is more important. I want women without the means to have access to basic healthcare even if that basic care involves a safe abortion. I want equal pay for truly equal work. I want to harness the inherent power of motherhood that is given to every woman and turn it into a power that not only creates life, but can decide what to do with their own life. I just want that choice. That is all.

Feminism is for Everybody by bell hooks is one of the best books I read in 2016 and one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I wish everybody would read it. I learned about bell hooks during a feminist art theory class last spring and read this book over the summer. It changed my life. In simple, but not dumbed-down language, hooks defines feminism and describes ways to promote feminist politics. Her approach is up front and honest, her tone optimistic and encouraging. The book is inspiring and I found myself pumping my fist in heartfelt agreement many times throughout.

I’ve been thinking about sharing it and now, given the current state of politics, I feel compelled to do so. I believe it would be helpful if more people understood feminism and why it’s so important. It’s not about women hating men or dominating men or being better than men. It’s about equality for everyone regardless of gender, age, race, or class. It’s about mutual respect and fairness. Feminism is a movement to end all types of oppression. 

I encourage everybody to read this short book, which takes just a few hours cover to cover. By the time you’re done you’ll have a better understanding of what feminism is all about and how you can help to strengthen it through your own everyday actions. If you love it, please tell everybody you know.
