Welcome Back to the Collection of the Odd Cryptid's Writings

Hi! I'm Athens/Andy (they/them). I am a somewhat old yet somewhat new face on writeblr. I'm currently a second year student at a university in the deep south, studying history and anthropology in order to become a museum curator. Most of my free time is spent writing, which is the driving force behind this blog. Writing has become the love of my life over the past ten years.

AthensWrites has had two prior iterations. All I posted here in the previous iteration was privated, including Not Your Typical Fairytale. Don't fear, NYTF will make a glorious return ;)

With all that said, welcome back to the odd writings of Athens, and I hope you enjoy your stay. Below the cut, I've detailed some of my current projects, which range from Sci-Fi (my favorite) to thrillers to fantasy to realistic fiction. I've highlighted key content warnings and tags for each, just to keep you aware. If you'd like to hop on a tag list for any of these stories, please let me know! Not Your Typical Fairytale (#nytf)

Although originally planned as a standalone novel, NYTF has now expanded into three separate books: Knight of Dawn, Queen of Noon, and King of Dusk. There's an additional collection of short stories/untold stories planned as well, tentatively titled Pawn of Midnight.

Knight of Dawn

Piers Hall is the newly crowned monarch of the post-apocalyptic State of Georgia, after their mother, Queen Adele, was declared unfit to rule. Despite meaning well, they find themself unprepared for the role, especially as political rivals, like North Carolina’s President René Dubois and Councilmember Shanna Miles, close in on their tail, seemingly threatening to topple their rule. When various palace staff start to show where their real loyalties, it seems like Grady Yensey, Commander of the Royal Guard and their closest friend, is the only one they can trust. Piers and Grady must scramble to uncover the truth behind Queen Adele’s questionable associates, Piers’ missing past, and President Dubois’ shady activities

International Alliance of Superhumans (#iash)

Superhumans have existed as long as we have, normal people who suddenly develop seemingly magical powers overnight. That’s why the International Alliance of Superhumans was founded in 1945, to help control these superhumans to better humanity. Now, the Alliance's ideals and control is falling apart, as the Underground and the Union threaten its weakening rule over the superhuman community. Fireball is the golden hero of the Alliance , the face of the organization, the beloved apprentice of the Chief Administrator after the death of the one and only GoldenSon. He’s brave, courageous, kind, and always up to take a photo with the kiddos, accompanied by his partner, NightSong. He’s taken down villains from Quantum Rift (the killer of GoldenSon) to Árbol Terror, and now has his eyes set on taking down Hueso Blanco and Morpheus Nox before they can tear a hole in reality. Brigid Roberts is the face behind the mask of Fireball. They’re the only child of the now-deceased Nikki Roberts and find have found themself seeking revenge for Nikki’s death…while also trying to manage this superhero business and their senior year of high school. It doesn’t help that the administration of Wesmoreland keeps threatening to expel them for their aggressive behavior. Hueso Blanco is the epitome of an ex-Alliance villain, a well beloved hero fallen from grace, after Árbol Terror and Quantum Rift convinced him to join the Underground. Now with both of his former allies dead, he leads the Underground, and with the help of Morpheus Nox (an up and coming villain with a terrifying similarity to Quantum Rift) he plans to tear a hole in our reality, ripping out world apart. Martin Garcia-Flores is the sole caretaker of his younger brother, Elias, and would do anything to protect him. After the Alliance's violent threats, he left, in order to protect what was left. He lost friends and family and his love to the Alliance's corrupted side, and now works tirelessly to bring it to his knees…while also trying to work three separate jobs to keep himself and Elias afloat. When fate brings Brigid and Martin face to face, maskless and vulnerable, the two come to understand they may not be as different as they’d both previously thought. Space Clue/The Murder of Fredrik Lexand (#tmfl)

In 2183, humans abandoned earth as her ecosystems collapsed and became uninhabitable. Now, the remnants of humanity live in the Lexand Starfleet, a group of 16 name-brand ships, sailing towards deep space. In control of it all is Fredrik Lexand, the 17th great grandson of the original founder of Lexand StarFleet. From his living pod at the head of StarSeeker Alpha, he controls everything and anything that happens to humanity, from their food to their spouses to where the remnants of humanity will travel to. The weight of the world on one man’s shoulders (who are we kidding, of course he has lackeys who do all the menial work), worshipped as a god. Until the morning he is found brutally dismembered, mangled parts of his body strewn all over his office. Humanity freezes, watching intently, as the Lexand Pod is locked down by Detective Scoud Tambry, swearing to uncover the killer, and avenge the Corporate god-king. Something Queer is Afoot (#SQIA)

Something Queer is Afoot is a massive collection of stories, all centering around queer life and romance. The Queer Crew is the group which most of them are centered around. David Gale Lost Media List (last update: 09/03/2024)

Unknown Status:

1. Boston (shot before 1976?) This film is mentioned as a movie credit in his biography section of the playbill for “Serenading Louie” (1976).

Lost permanently:

1. Encounter (1965)  This was Robert De Niro's film debut, and  various documents credit David Gale as appearing in the film as well. There was only one negative, and it was thrown away.

At least 95% lost:

1. Love is a Many Splendored Thing (1967-1973) We don't know what role David played on this soap, but it was definitely a minor one. The show fell victim to the practice of “wiping” and “junking”, which is when studios erase/reuse film reels to save money and storage space, but the episodes on the reels obviously die in the process. Since this aired before household recording equipment became available (~1979), home recordings do not exist.

2.  The Secret Storm (1973-1974) David appeared as popular/controversial character Father Mark Reddin. Also victim to wiping/junking.

3. The Edge of Night (1976-1977) David appeared as the despicable gangster Beau Richardson. Also victim to wiping/junking.

4. The Canonization of Bishop John Neumann aka “Blessed John Neumann” (1976) This biographical drama was made for CBS News's “Religious and Cultural Specials” block aka “Look up and Live” and only aired twice, originally in March 1976 and again on June 19, 1977. 

5. Divorce Court (1984 or 1985) It's not known which episode he was in, but he played a man named Stewart in either 1984 or 1985.

6. The Silence (1975) Not sure which character David played in this, but records say he was in it. (Photo, he is at the head of the table)

Slightly Better Odds:

1. A Weekend with Strangers / Weekend Swingers (USA 1971, UK 1974) This was an X rated film with multiple documented showings into the 1980′s, and it even got an additional release overseas. This film definitely got around, and has Jennifer Welles in the billing to boot. But it's still extremely rare, and given that it's X-rated, copies were/are frequently thrown away. UPDATE: CJ Scheiner Books has a copy but is unable to locate it. A copy was believed to have been a part of the Institute of Advanced Study of Human Sexuality (IASHS) before it closed in 2018.

2. Search for Tomorrow (1982) David appeared as Rusty and Alex on the show throughout 1982 and 1983. A majority of Rusty's appearances have been found and can be accessed on YouTube, but a few are still missing, and the entirety of his appearances as the character Alex from the summer of 1982 are still lost due to P&G supposedly getting rid of all of their episodes of Search. Before he was a regular character, David appeared on Search for a week in 1977 as “Captain Porter” investigating the death of Wade Collins sometime between August and October.  

Copies are known to exist in institutional and household collections:

1. NET presentations (pre 1973) Vague entry, but David had roles in NET presentations, but which ones are not known. There is a large digital collection of NET productions (National Educational Television, which in 1973 was absorbed by PBS) in the Library of Congress and other archives. 

2. The Jackie Gleason Show (pre 1973) Another vague entry. David was on the show, but which episode(s) are not known. There is also no way to buy or stream the entirety of the show, only select episodes are on the market.

2. The American Parade (The Case Against Milligan) (1975) An episode of a historical drama series that ran on television, and was often distributed to schools on 8mm (?) film. 

3. The Molders of Troy (1980) VHS tapes and reels exist in many collections, but are still rare. I have only ever come across two VHS copies of it, but don't own a copy myself and have yet to digitize any footage.

4. Berrenger’s (1985) He was on at least one episode as a side character named Rick Carol. The whole series minus a few episodes (around 10 episodes) exist in some private collections. I've seen the first ten episodes, so he must have shown up in either 11, 12, or the unaired 13th episode.

5. Loving (1986-1987) David was on this soap opera for at least a few months as a character named “Bishop McMahon”. I have come across people who own these episodes via home-recorded VHS tapes, but I do not have any footage or own a copy myself.

Patterson, 565, Gladstone avenue, in an attempted robbery on the evening of January 29.

Mr. Patterson, who is 73 years of age, was set upon by the two men when locking up the store, and only the sturdy resistance which he offered to the savage attack saved his possessions and resulted in the men running away. He was kicked and beaten to near insensibility. 

Brutal and Cowardly Offence. In passing sentence on the Burkes. Magistrate Glenn E. Strike commented, "to show leniency to men like you would be to set the law at naught. Your crime is one of the worst that has come before me since I was appointed to the bench. I can’t imagine a more brutal and cowardly offence. 

‘It as rather fortunate that you are charged with just assault with intent to rob. It might easily have been a much graver charge.’

Were Under Influence In pleading guilty the pair declared they were under the influence of liquor at the time and were not fully responsible for their actions. Both were arrested a week ago by Detective Duncan McDonell. of the city police force.

SPFPP 302: The Prejudice of Stigma

I wasn’t sure if I’d publish this as a podcast episode considering I’m exploring the new territory of just collecting information from health care providers that can support my mission to help people navigate the stigma that comes with not only a herpes, but any STI diagnosis. As I learn more, I learn more. While I filter and curate this information from them to you, maybe you’ll have my same experience and growth while I’m learning out loud here through these conversations. So I decided to get their consent to share these recordings that aren’t quite podcast episodes, but conversations with providers on their challenges and perspectives as they treat patients. Dr. Lourdes here is the first interview in that series. I look forward to sharing with you here.

Lourdes Mantecón-Garza obtained her medical degree in 1982, at the medical school of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, in Monterrey, Mexico. She continued with specialty studies in Internal Medicine at the SSA Metropolitan Hospital in the same city in 1988. She completed a master's degree in business administration at the University of Texas (MBA, UT-PanAmerican) in 2005. She continue with studies on human sexuality at the Institute for Advanced Studies of Human Sexuality (IASHS) and at the Buehler Institute, both in California USA. Dr. Mantecón is a certified clinical sexologist by the American College of Sexologists International and is also a certified sexuality counselor by the American Association of Sexuality, Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) also in the US. Dr. Mantecón -Garza has fellow studies in women's sexuality by the International Society for the Study of Women's Sexual Health (ISSWSH). She is a visiting professor for human sexuality readings at different educational institutions in Mexico (UANL) and the United States (UTRGV school of medicine and family residency). She has presented research papers at national congresses in Mexico and the United States and world ISSM (International Society for Sexual Medicine) 2018, WAS (World Association for Sexual health) 2019 and ISSSWSH 2020. In addition to her practice, Dr. Mantecón Garza decided to write reference books that could be available to the population without the difficulty of medical technicalities. His first work, “The diet and the diabetic”, was published by Editorial Trillas in 1996, the second is “Healthy Sexuality” in the process of printing with the same publisher. She is dedicated to work as sexuality counselor at her office in McAllen Texas, she also offers services through telemedicine in English and Spanish.

Worldbuilding

Superhumans

As the introduction says, superhumans have existed as long as humanity has existed. Most major religions have some sort of explanation for why superhumans exist, but in reality, no one knows. The population of superhumans seems to be correlated to the human population, but the true number of superhumans is unknown. It is also unknown how the superhumans are selected, as most develop powers between the ages of 7 and 13. There are several records of powers and mantles being passed down through a family, such as Goldenson and Fireball.

Powers and Mantles

Powers are what make superhumans Superhumans. They vary from superhuman to superhuman, and many common ones are duplicated (like pyrokinesis). The options for powers are essentially endless, with the only primary rule being that the powers don't actually modify the appearance of the superhuman (like wings, horns, skin, gills, or anything like that). Mantles are a little different. Each superhuman, hero or villain, has a wearable mantle, which is tied to their identity as a superhuman. When activated, the mantle provides a costume for the superhuman, which can be changed via simply deactivating and reactivating the mantle with the intention of their costume being changed. Mantles are passed down from superhuman to superhuman; when superhumans die, their mantles (and associated powers) are granted to a new superhuman. For example, Fireball inherited the mantle and powers of Goldenson after his death. Occasionally, new mantles and powers will emerge with the growing human population. The true nature of mantles are not well understood, although in the modern day, microchips and other technology have been added by IASH and the Underground.

Superhuman Names

While superhuman names used to be chosen by the superhumans themselves, nowadays the process is controlled by IASH. Names are given to Alliance-sanctioned superheroes by the Naming Committee, which also changes the superhuman names of supervillains who are expelled from IASH. Modern superhuman names generally are composed of two words; those without a space are IASH superheroes, and those with a space are supervillains.

The International Alliance of Superhumans

After the use of superhumans in combat during World War II, and the human rights violations which occurred via said use, the International Alliance of Superhumans was formed around the same time as the United Nations. While IASH is not part of the UN, they have been granted police-like functions in most states which are members to the UN. IASH, in function, is a superhuman police government which spans international borders, and controls the superhuman populace. All superhumans are subject to register with IASH or be labelled as a supervillain. Supervillains are constantly under surveillance and attack by Alliance-sanctioned superheroes, although sometimes the lesser-supervillains are kept around for PR purposes and to make IASH look better. IASH has branches in most party states in the world, most often in populated cities. Some states, like China, the US, and Russia have multiple branches within their borders, while smaller countries like the Dominican Republic or city-states like Singapore only have one. IASH's current Chief Administrator (in the NYC Headquarters) is the formerly Welsh-based superhero, Meremimic.

The Underground

The Underground, founded in 2020, was the first true alternative movement to IASH. It was founded by ex-Alliance supervillains who felt wronged by their expulsion from IASH. Generally, the Underground is considered to be a more violent movement, although they spread their fair share of propaganda. Quantum Shift was the de facto leader at one point, before the organization was taken over by his student, Hueso Blanco.

The Union

The Union is a new movement, founded only in 2048 by the late-Blood Ruby. Unlike the Underground, the Union was founded by a mix of superheroes and supervillains looking to reform IASH.

Wesmoreland Private Academy

Wesmoreland is a prestigious boarding school, housing 6-12th graders. Mel, Brigid, and Madds attend currently. Val and Nikki are alumni. Owen Roberts is a major donor to the school and the single reason why Brigid has not been expelled for their violent behavior.

Further Commentary

IASH is another one of my older WIPs, and was tied closely to an old (toxic) friend of mine. It has taken me a while to rework it to something I enjoy, but this is approaching that final product. Unlike NYTF, IASH focuses on bringing down the "government", rather than trying to fix it. (They do fix it in the end). I will be adding more to the characters soon! I just wanted to get this out for Archie to see :)

Concept:

Super-powered humans have always walked among us, from the beginning, and they will until the end. The year is 2041, and the International Academy of Superhumans controls the day to day life of these extraordinary beings. Those who stand with the Academy are your heroes, the ones who save the day. They protect normals from the villains, those who have turned their back on the organization and are hell-bent on destroying humanity as we know it. As tensions rise, and alliances form, the lines between hero and villain begin to blur.

After the death of Goldenson, the Academy needed a new model hero, one to follow School Teacher’s every lesson and command. FireBall soon filled the void, stepping into the shoes of his father and taking his mantle, and the fire powers that came with it. He stood up against and eliminated the notorious Árbol Terror and Quantum Rift, and with NightSong at his side, still protects humanity from the wrath of Hueso Blanco and Morpheus Nox.

Topaz Roberts was never meant to be the hero. They weren’t supposed to find the mask of their late father laying on their desk, two days after his death. Fighting what seems like an endless war has made them bitter and cold, they’ll admit, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel. If they can finish their senior year of high school at the elite Westmoreland Boarding School, they can escape the grasp of their controlling grandfather. However, as they get assigned a job they refuse to complete, an opportunity pops up, an enticing offer from the very man they’re trying to kill.

Martin García-Flores aka Hueso Blanco

Hueso Blanco was expelled years ago, for spreading propoganda against the Academy. He then joined forces with his ex-partner Árbol Terror (formerly ÁrbolTierra) and the murderous Quantum Rift to tear open a black hole in the space-time continuum, and wreak havoc on the planet. After the death of both Árbol Terror and Quantum Rift, Hueso Blanco joined forces with the new owner of Quantum Rift’s mantle, a young villain by the name of Morpheus Nox. He’s proven to be stronger than the Academy ever anticipated, with Hueso Blanco at his side. Currently, FireBall and NightSong are working on tracking down and putting an end to the duo’s wrath.

Martin García-Flores is a workaholic, to say the least. When his parents were murdered by Academy enforcers (members of the Academy without powers), Martin dropped out of high school to take care of his younger brother, Elias. He’s done all he can to protect and cushion Elias from the Academy, but they don’t seem to understand that Elias is a citizen in this fight, having had his mind erased of Martin’s role by the ex-villain Mind Killer. As all seems hopeless, and the Academy closes in, Martin makes a last-chance offer to the very hero trying to kill him
