yayyy vent time and by vent time I mean complaining-about-ib-econ-and-my-unfortunate- and-horribly-catastrophic-choice-in-picking-that-class time
so was it the worst choice I've ever made in my life?...
most likely
number 1 factor in my annoying period of extra depression² ?...
mhm yes
do I have an exam tomorrow that I am not at all equipped to do?...
absolutely
is there blood rushing in my ears with no signs of stopping?...
seems like it
are my nails and surrounding skin destroyed?...
of course, you best believe it
am I also procrastinating writing this stupid paper II mock exam that is like ¼ complete?...
unfortunately yes (pls end me, what a horrible fate awaits me)
should I have listened when the smartest person I know told me to switch out of this class?...
yes I really fucking should have they were right like always fuck
this isn't even accounting for the other horrifying stress that are in store for me
yes most of the suffering ends friday but that also means that I have until friday to not get fucked.... now lets see what awaits me
ah yes just your usual 1,000 words part ⅔ of my extended essay of which my diploma depnds on and then oh wow would you look at that... another like 1,000 word econ essay which... no way... my diploma also depends on... not to mention my usual list of homework
and now for an even sooner due date of lovely good old wednesday of which i have to finish 10 whole pages of a review packet for apush
opps and what's this... I have to go work at the library for some stupid 100 community hours that... wait... what's that?... my diploma also depends on? who would've guessed... this is literally so stupid what
I hate the public school sy- nono I hate the school system in general
especially ib
like I'm so sorry I have a life and am too stupid in math and don't understand a bunch of graphs
I do not care for your stupid knowledge
what I want to learn I will do so on my own and enjoy my time exponentially more than I ever would by sitting in your horrid prisons of paper and concrete
its funny too because I remember complaining to my mother about ib and telling her that I wanted to and that I could switch academies
then she offered
and wanting to be all strong and brave and whatever other bullshit I was feeling at the time
I chose to stay in it thinking i could do this alone
well would ya look at that losers
guess who's the one losing out in the end
the one time I didn't follow through with my cowardly coping mechanisms of running away from my problems
and what do I get for it?
tears in my face?
ridiculous
well actually the 2 times (not running from ib and not running from ib econ)
only need 3 more for it to be part of one of those fics "the 5 times blank did this and the one time blank did it back"
funny how it'll be over so soon but it sure doesn't feel like it
funny how it all feels so right and yet so wrong at all the same times and sometimes they just take turns
how I can be happy for such few days on the weekends when I get some breaks and then the weeks feel like nonstop punches to the gut
beyond elated for thanksgiving break since they give us a whole week off this year
only thing is...
that's next week
so it's almost like I have to get shot in the face before i can properly rest for a short while
watch me write more in this short time span than I ever will for my stupid paper II or aa2
also wtf I just spent like the last 30mins writing this I'm going to fail my exam tomorrow because I still have to finish the mock exam and then study
#hate everything#ib life#fuck ib econ#i do not understand why this class is just not in a language i understand#almost as if it repels me#hoping college is easier or else we're sending it

Every now and again I have to stop and think about how in pll the smartest character whose main characteristic was being smart copied her sister's essay that she didn't understand anything of and the author picked literally the easiest to understand principle in economics.
#and she took ap economics too#like how are u in ap and u dont understand the invisible hand#how bad is your teacher#sidenote yes theres probably a shitton more to it that i havent studied cus im in ib sl econ but the principle?? that shit is so simple

How to actually sit down and study📚💻🖨☕️📖📓

You've got the textbook and notebook open, the highlighter uncapped, the coffee steaming and laptop switched on.
Now what? Do I just highlight random keywords and write out key concepts whilst repeating important sounding phrases out loud?
While this may have worked in middle school or maybe even highschool, most college and university courses are an entirely different breed. Weekly pop quizzes and an in depth recap each class?
Highly unlikely, at least in my experience.
Uni very much leaves students to fend for themselves, with studying and learning the material taught in class as your own responsibility.
So what's a student to do? As someone who had to get her act together when starting the IB program, and then tackling university, here's my advice on how to actually study productively.
Create a study plan by breaking down the workload
Break down the workload:
Say you have a French vocab set to learn, an English paper due and an econ group project.
Study and write out your vocab, and then meet with your study group for practice.
Plan your paper research: what is the thesis, find relevant literary sources and highlight pontential useful concepts, do an outline of the points you want to cover, and then plan the dates and time that you'll actually sit down and write it out.
Go over the main econ project points, do your bit and then schedule a meeting with your coursemates to do the whole thing.
3. Create and maintain your study space.
If your space is messy and full of distractions, then your study sessions are probably not going to be as productive as they could be. Eliminate any distractions or at least try to minimize them
4. Join or create study groups!
They can be really useful when you actually study instead of hanging out (i'm guilty as charged unfortunately).
Divide concepts and have each member create a cheat-sheet or a short but detailed guide to share, so that you can cover more ground.
5. Use practise and past papers
You need to know how to actually approach the exam questions so that you can make the best use of your exam time, so familiarize yourself with the paper structure and the type of questions e.g. essay-based, scenario questions, numerical.
6. Take breaks!
Studying is important, but so is your well-being.
Schedule 10-15 min breaks for a quick snack and a stroll, but also 1hr-1.5 hr breaks for a proper meal, to catch up wth friends or to watch a show.

Overall, a study plan and a study group can go a long way in helping you get the most out of your study sessions, so do what's best for you!

❛ about me ༉‧₊˚✧
this a personal blog
yes, it's out here and I'll make it as aesthetic as possible but I'm not interested in getting into political discourse
I simply need a tool for self evaluation and to start holding myself accountable
why? you may ask
well, it's not all rainbows and sunshine because I made the horrible yet amazing choice of taking higher level physics.
I love it, but even simple forces and diagrams are hard to do.
my randomly chosen 6 subjects:
HL: math aa, physics, english b
SL: lit, psychology, economics
(no, really, I chose them blindly because I didn't do pre-DP)
despite complaining (I love complaining) I love my life, and to be completely honest I enjoy the workload of Ib. it's better than my previous fixation on calories and nutrition.
I also love the feeling of stress. but let's not unpack that. ever.
I'm not sure if I will update my grades every time something changes, but I need to hold myself accountable, so here goes my biggest problem in life rn:
MATH AA HL: 7 - 6.86
PHYSICS HL: 6 - 4.77
ENGLISH B HL: 7 - 6.81
PSYCHOLOGY SL: 7 - 6.75
ECONOMICS SL: 6 - 5.40
NATIVE LANG. LIT: 7 - 6.64
yes, they're not what I wanted, but guess what? I have another semester to go. (that's what I tell myself to not go crazy)
(btw they go up from .76)
yeah, that's all. your girl has an econ exam in an hour so bye!

I’m a sophomore majoring in Econ. Didn’t know that Princeton wasn’t going to teach me anything about Finance (buyside and sellside) going in. What’s the best way to self-study? I’m not good with retaining stuff by just reading the Vault Guide - looking for literally ANYTHING else (innovative)
Response from Olive:
finance is a pretty broad field, so I would try to narrow your interests down to narrower subsets such as ib/pe/vc and learn the corresponding material. tbh, unless you're going into something super technical like trading you don't need to know anything too in depth. knowing things like financial statements, valuation methods, and common financial metrics can get you a good amount of the way in terms of preparation since they also tend to ask behavioral questions in interviews. it could also help to ask upperclassmen you know in finance about their experiences recruiting at specific firms.

76~77% || Working on review sheets for econ (because condensing the 600pg textbook to 70pg worth of revision notes is still too much). Aim is to get it done this weekend so I can start doing past papers again OTL.

Hey! I’m planning to take HL economics, English Lang lit & psychology. Do you have any tips? Also is the workload heavy? Thank you so much 💖💖💖also I really like your blog x
hi hi!! so sorry for replying to you so late! for starters, i took english literature so i have very little knowledge about how to go about it and it’s content!
i have tips for psych here - this subject is def. content-heavy
econ - i didn’t find it that content-heavy, it was def. my best subject and the easiest for me to manage; some tips:
- study using the syllabus,i cannot stress this enough! literally, go through it and treat it as questions, the learning objectives where you get stuck on make a note of it and study it later. the textbooks will usually have it highlighted so you can go to it and read + take notes. go over it with a study group! and teach each other, this was so helpful leading up to exams
- ^^^ also take solid notes! make sure they are simplified and to the point; make use of analogies they are super helpful for remembering concepts like price floors + ceilings
- make sure you know your defs.!! this goes for almost every ib subject. the very first thing you should in any of the econ papers (other than p3 usually) is to define!! super imp.
- use past paper questions, get used to timed conditions! you’ll be surprised how fast time goes by when doing your papers - you have a lot of essays to write. it also helps you test the concepts that you don’t and do understand, and get used to the ib format, what they are looking for, how its graded. get your teacher to look over some of your work! it will help if you can’t/do understand the markscheme. keep doing them, my econ teacher always said “practice makes better - you can always improve your work, even if they already at the 7 mark band ;D
- get a whiteboard. no, seriously. so helpful for outlining your essays (ALWAYS OUTLINE!!). my econ teacher always said “failing to plan, is a plan for failure” - so if you can time and get all your ideas down - do it! this helped me move my essays from 5-7s. whiteboards are also brilliant for diagrams!
hope this helps and good luck!
