Making Time
After Rukia and Renji's wedding, Orihime makes time for Ichigo
---------------------
Orihime was a bundle of nerves as she made her way to the cafe to meet Kurosaki-kun. She hadn’t been able to relax since he’d asked her to make time for him since Rukia and Renji’s wedding. All the signs pointed to something romantic, but she didn’t dare hope that she was finally going to get her deepest desire realized. If Kurosaki-kun wanted to talk to her about something else, she wasn’t sure what she would do.
It had taken a few weeks for them to find a date that would work for both of them. Orihime had work almost every day and Kurosaki-kun was finishing up his third year of university. Hopefully it wasn’t a bad sign.
The cafe was small and cute. Orihime smiled at a few girls wearing her old school uniform in the corner. She didn’t miss Saturday classes, but part of her missed how simple life had been back then.
Kurosaki-kun was in the very back in a corner by the wall. Two cups of coffee sat before his raised arms and clasped hands.
“Sorry I’m late,” Orihime said. “I had to pop into the bakery real quick to pick up my paycheck.
Ichigo’s eyes flew up, staring up at her in wonder before shaking his head. “No, it’s fine. You’re just in time. I got here really early.”
Plopping into the seat across from him, she took the cup he gestured to and smiled at the smell of hazelnut and the little jug of cream to the side. He remembered how she took her coffee. “How’s everything?”
“Fine, fine. Just got done with exams and talking to my professors about next year. I’m gonna be getting some good mentorship for my translations.”
“That’s wonderful, Kurosaki-kun.”
“What about you?”
Orihime shrugged. “Not much is really going on. There’s been talk from the manager about retiring and I’m considering asking to take over for him. I’d hate to see the bakery close since it’s been so good to me and has a long history. But, I’m not sure if it would be appropriate.”
“He’d be lucky to have you take over for him.” Kurosaki-kun stared deeply into her eyes and said it with such conviction that she almost believed him.
“What did you want to see me about?”
Kurosaki-kun drained his entire cup before staring down at the table. Neither of them made a sound as the soft chatter of the cafe surrounded them. Orihime fidgeted in her seat. Maybe he wanted her help with another girl and didn’t know how to ask her?
“I-” he cleared his throat, “We’ve been friends for a long time, right?”
“We have.”
“And, we’re great as friends.”
Orihime’s shoulders drooped. “We are.”
“You’re one of my best friends. I can’t imagine my life without you at this point. You’re right there when I need you with a smile and a warm cup of tea. Even when I’m being a dick.”
“You aren’t-”
Kurosaki-kun held up his hand. “Please, Inoue. Just…just let me get this out. This is not easy.”
She wished he would break her heart and get it over with. If it was another girl, she’d help him because she wanted him to be happy with someone who he loved. But that didn’t mean she’s be thrilled.
“Back in school,” he continued, “I thought you were the prettiest thing I had ever seen.”
Orihime’s heart rate picked up. Her cheeks flooded with heat as he looked at her with something raw and earnest.
“I still think so, honestly. But all the other guys and some of the girls talked about you all the time like you were something to conquer and I didn’t want to be part of that. So, I buried my feelings for you. And then, we became friends. I never imagined that we would be because you always seemed so shy and timid and I’m, well, me.”
But, she liked him. She liked him exactly how he was. The urge to take his hand and tell him that she would do anything to be with him was strong, but she held herself back. She was curious to see where he was going.
“And then we got to know each other and it was so hard to talk to you every day and not say something, anything, about how I felt for you. It killed me when I found out you went to Hueco Mundo. I should have been able to protect you better. And I didn’t. I buried all of my feelings for you because you deserve better than I could ever give you.”
Clutching her cup, Orihime could barely breathe. This had to be a dream. There was no way that Kurosaki Ichigo was doing this right now. She’d wake-up any moment now and cry in her little futon as the pain of never having her love realized hit her with full force.
Kurosaki-kun swallowed loudly and clenched his fists. “I could see that you liked me, but I told myself again and again that you should have the world and I can’t give it to you. Holding you back isn’t an option. But, I can’t do this anymore. Inoue, I can’t offer you anything besides myself, so maybe I’m just wasting my time here. I-I’m in love with you. The only girl I’ve ever liked has been you and, even if you want to stay friends, I want you in my life in any way that you will have me.”
Orihime didn’t speak. She didn’t know what to say. This couldn’t be real. Kurosaki-kun would never confess to her. He’d marry some girl with good pedigree and had the money to go to a nice university and see all the things she wanted to.
“Inoue? Please, say something.”
Mouth opening and closing a few times, Orihime didn’t know what to say. The very thing she had always wanted was right in front of her and she couldn’t speak. Instead, she took his hand and wrapped her smaller hands around it. She loved how big his hands were, had always wanted to hold them just like this.
Threading their fingers together, she hoped she could convey what she wanted to.
Seeming to get her message, Kurosaki-kun followed her lead and clutched her hand. “Is that a ‘yes’?”
Orihime let out a watery chuckle. She hadn’t even noticed the tears building up. “I never thought you’d like me back. I always thought you would find someone better than me.”
“There’s no one better than you.”
“That’s not true. I can be selfish sometimes, Kurosaki-kun. I probably should have said something years ago, but I was terrified you would reject me so I never did. Even then, I still hoped that you would notice me.”
“I couldn't go a day without noticing you. You’re the sweetest person I’ve ever met.”
Kurosaki-kun lifted his hand up to place a kiss on the back of it. If this was a dream, she hoped she never woke up.
“Do you want to go somewhere else? There’s a new sci-fi movie playing that I think you’ll like.”
“I’d love to.”
Kurosaki-kun paid for their coffee and the movie, refusing her offer to pay each time she tried to push money into his hands. He’d been unable to stop her from paying for their popcorn and drinks as she’d raced to the counter and handed her money to the cashier before she’d even ordered.
The movie had been pretty good, but it was the man beside her that made it worthwhile. He’d lifted the drink holder between them and pulled her closer. With her head on his shoulder and his arm around her, it’d been the best first date she’d been on.
After the movie, Kurosaki-kun had offered to take her to dinner at a nice restaurant. She dragged him to a little ramen stall that sold the best shoyu ramen she’d ever had. “I don’t need you to spend a lot of money to show me that you care,” she insisted. “I just want to spend time with you. Go with me to the beach and park every once in a while and I’ll be happy.”
“You deserve way more, though.”
“Don’t I get to decide that, Kurosaki-kun?” Taking his hand, she looked into his eyes and poured all the love she felt for him into that stare. “I’ve loved you for a really long time and I’ve never wanted you to take me to fancy places. I wanted you to love me back. And, now that I know you do,” she squeezed his hand, “I couldn’t be happier. If you really want to spend money on me, then save it for birthdays or our anniversary.”
“Anniversary?” Kurosaki-kun raised a brow. “Getting a bit ahead of yourself, aren’t you?” The grin he sent her took the bite out of his words.
“Didn’t you know? Now that I have you, I’m not letting you go. I’m a selfish person like that.”
“That’s good, because I’m the same way.” Kurosaki-kun pulled her closer to him as they stood outside the stall. “I’m not going to let you go as long as you want me.”
“Then it’s a good thing that I’ll always want you.”
“It’s the best thing.”
He took her lips with his for their first kiss, sending sparks down her spine and igniting a raging inferno in her belly. Her arms wrapped around his neck and buried themselves in his hair. She’d never felt more loved and wanted.

IH WEEK 2023 ➞ DAY 02. We Do Knot Always Love You
They walked side by side together to her apartment, a heavy silence and a measured distance hanging between them. Ichigo and Orihime parted ways with the others upon arriving back in Karakura Town, Chad and Uryu both having read the mood and politely excusing themselves to give them some much appreciated privacy. From his periphery, Ichigo noticed Orihime tense, holding back a shiver against the chilly night air. He shrugged out of his suit jacket (Yuzu had insisted on pressing it for the wedding) and wordlessly draped it around her shoulders. The corner of his lips turned upwards when he saw her relax into its warmth, just before her wide honey eyes flickered up to meet his gaze. “It’s cold out tonight.” he explained, answering her question before she had a chance to voice it. His throat felt dry, and he had to concentrate on his words to ensure his voice wouldn’t catch. Inwardly, he cursed himself for being so nervous. “Yes, it is.” she agreed, her voice barely above a whisper as she nodded once. She smiled warmly as she looked at him, a light pink dusting her cheekbones. “Thank you.” “O-Of course.” he said without thinking, the words coming to him more easily than he’d have thought. Ichigo tried not to focus too much on how naturally it came to him; caring for her, that is. Instead he forced himself to breathe in and out, to count each step he took (each one far too many), to ignore how his fingers just barely brushed against hers for the third time as they drifted too close together as they make their way to her home — only for them to pull away sharply, as if burned by drifting too close to one another. Like planets, drawn into one another’s orbit. He remembered their exchange before stepping into Senkaimon, how he steeled himself to ask her for something he wasn’t quite certain she wanted to give; how he swallowed the thick lump of fear in his throat, and how her quiet, breathless utterance of “There’s no time better than the present, Kurosaki-kun.” sent his heart fluttering, untwisted all the knots in his stomach, and made his face burn with blush. Ichigo had never anticipated her bold reply (and it was bold of her; even as she clasped her hands tightly in front of her heart and stuttered over her words), but it made his heartbeat race in his ears. How had he quieted his feelings for so long? And if he were to truly believe Renji’s words, how had she?

A Convenience Store in Tokyo, Japan. 2:56am.
‘And there I was. In the middle of the soda and beverage aisle. My mouth wide open and my eyes glued to probably the most beautiful person on the planet.’
The previously scowling man stood there openly staring at the red headed beauty, who was having a tough time deciding on which milk to buy. He told himself that he was only at the store to pick up a few staple items: bread, milk, eggs, cigarettes, and beer. Placing the last item on his list in the basket, he started to make his way to the cashier. That's when he stopped dead in his tracks.
Ichigo Kurosaki, a twenty year old man was a man who had problems of showing his emotions. He usually bore a mean scowl on his face, scaring many people off, and he was known as a rough troublemaker. Of course, he had crushes in the past and thought of some women as attractive, but he never acted on his thoughts. And honestly, they never kept his attention long. He’ll usually get caught up in his job, hanging out with his friends, or unintentionally beat some jerk’s ass. His friends tried to tell him that he should get a hold on his temper and stop scowling, or else he'll scare all the girls away.
God, he should've listened to their advice. While he was gawking at the oblivious beauty, his heart hammered against his chest, which is a feeling he rarely got. He could feel the blood rushing into his face, and his palms were getting all sweaty.
If any gangster saw the former infamous high school bad boy, Ichigo Kurosaki, getting flustered by some pretty lady, they would be finding themselves picking up their jaws.
Finally, the woman decided on 2% milk, and was heading towards the cashier, which was at the front. Thankfully, it was away from him. But then again, she's inching close to walking out the store, and there’s a chance he’ll never see her again. He became more anxious at that thought and he didn’t know what to do. It’s not like he didn’t want to speak to her, he just didn’t know how. He’s not what you would call a people person and he was completely fine with that until just now. For the first time, he wanted to talk to someone, a woman at that. He just doesn’t know how to go about it.
She happily laid her food items on the counter: butter, eggs, cheese, red bean paste, milk...
Okay, okay. Ichigo, we don’t even know this woman. It’ll be creepy to just ask for her number. Plus, she could be nuts for all you know.
He squared his shoulders, straightened his back, and held his usual determined scowl. Clenching his handheld store basket, he made his way to the counter. And he was there, one foot away from the being that was making his heart race.
"Okay that'll be-" The cashier was about to announce the total price, until the lady interrupted him.
"Oh, I knew I forgot something! I'll be right back Mister Urahara!" She hurried to the back of the store, and in a minute or less, she came back with a pack of strawberries. Her eyes laid on Ichigo's, which made his heart rate to a little more faster.
He nervously swallowed, and tried his absolute best not to coward. But unexpectedly, the red beauty gave him bright smile. "You don't mind if I cut in front, do you?" She innocently said, which would make him say yes to anything she'd request.
"Nah. I don't mind at all." Ichigo moved out the way. She smiled even wider, "Thank you, kind gentleman." She slid back, and placed the strawberries on the counter, and the old man rung it up. "Okay, that'll be $15.48." She gave him her debit card and waited for her receipt. When he gave it to her, she grabbed her bags and turned around. "See ya later Mister Urahara!"
"You be careful out there!" The old man smiled and waved. Again, her sweet gray eyes landed on Kurosaki's deep brown ones. "And thank you, kind gentleman." He gently waved back, "Don't sweat it."
She carried her two bags of groceries to her car, which was a red beetle. Put the bags in the trunk and hopped in the front and drove off. Welp, probably the last time you’ll see her again. He silently sighed but shook it off as he laid his items on the counter for the man to ring up. “How are you, Ichigo?” Mister Urahara, the owner of the store. He ran the store for the past eight years and has been a local for twelve years, so he’s pretty familiar with everyone around the area.
"Ya staying out of trouble?" He started to ring me up. I rested my elbow on the counter and cradled my head. "I can't afford to get in trouble." Then Ichigo released a long sigh, "I lost my job today."
The cashier grunted, "What's this? The seventh job you've quit for this year?" Mister Urahara chuckled finishing up his order. Ichigo rolled his eyes, "Nope it's only the second. Geez, I knew you was losing your memory but I didn't know it was this bad." Urahara chuckled rubbing his head as Ichigo continued, “But I had a good reason this time. He was working me overtime not even giving me the pay I deserve. I even tried to explain why I couldn't work late hours but he ignored me."
"That'll be $18.50” Mister Urahara said.
Ichigo sighed, "Kinda like you're doing to me right now."
"I heard every word you said, boy." Ichigo gave him his card. He swiped it. "Well, I guess it wasn't meant to be for that job." He gave me the bags. Ichigo was about to grab them and head towards the door but the man put his hand on his shoulder to stop him from doing so.
"If you need a job, you could work here. I know I always say that, but it’s the truth.” Urahara offered to him. He’s been offering Ichigo the same opportunity for the past months, but Ichigo gives him the same reply. "Please, old man. Why would I wanna work here? They're ain't that much pay in this job."
“True, true," The manager nodded in agreement and retreated his hand from his shoulder. "But the hours here are very flexible, meaning you could come in at anytime and leave at anytime." Ichigo grabbed his bags and headed towards the door, “Appreciate the offer once again, but no thanks.”
“Also, you get the chance to talk to my regular customer Orihime-san.” He mischievously smirked at the younger man and continued. “Yeah, yeah. I saw how you were drooling over the woman.”
Ichigo popped a vein, “Oi, just because you’re a perv, doesn’t mean I’m one. I’m not just gonna accept a job because of a girl.”
Urahara raised a brow, “Oh? So you don’t deny your attraction to the woman?” Ichigo narrowed his eyes and sucked his teeth, “Shut up.” As he slammed the door.
On his way back to his apartment, it started to rain.
"Damn it, why does it have to rain now?" Ichigo cursed to himself while driving on the presoaked roads. It was past midnight and in the middle of December. He didn't really care for driving, especially at night. He brought a cigarette to his mouth reached for his lighter in his back pocket. A thunder boomed in the background, and a thought crossed his mind. Why was she out so late anyway? A girl like her should be at the house getting her beauty sleep. There's perverts and dangerous men-
He almost choked on his cig.
But it was like fate were pulling them together, as he saw the red head on the side of the road, parked near a lake. It looked as if her red Volkswagen Beetle had broken down, due to all the smoke that was coming from her hood.
In a flash, he pulled over.
She was soaking wet, gripping her phone for dear life. "Please pick up Tatsuki-Chan...." She silently pleaded while on the verge of tears. She didn't like being alone in the middle of the night. The thought alone scared her. But she didn't have any food at home and she had to make the choice to stop to the store after work.
"Tatsuki here! Sorry I'm not at home at the mom-" Inoue Orhime let her anger get the best of her as she pulled her phone away from her ear and threw it on the soft ground. She huffed in annoyance, her beautiful face twisted in a distressed snare. "I want to cry." And she did cry. Her eyes puffed up as she looked under the hood. Her motor was giving off pure black smoke. She should've sold this car years ago but her heart couldn't allow her to do that. She held precious memories with Gumball (the name she gave the beetle).
Now, she was left stranded on the side of a highway while it was pouring cats and dogs. She didn’t even have the energy to grab her umbrella, she was already soaking wet. But then she heard a howling nearby. I should get in the car. Coyotes could be out tonight. But she heard a car door slam. Terrified, she whipped her head in the direction of the sound and looked into his eyes.
Chocolate. She remembers those chocolate brown eyes.
"H-hey." Her voice squeaked as she stared at the dude she just seen at the convenience store. He stared back at her as he casually strolled to the car. He looked under her hood, "Damn, the engine's blowed." He stated bluntly then looked at her face which had fresh tears. His eyes roamed her soaking wet body. He quickly turned his head away from her gorgeous curves as he inspected the car further.
"Looks l-like it." She tried to clear her voice to sound more confident but failed miserably. Ichigo looked at the busted motor with some thought. Moments later, he spoke. "I know a car shop around the corner. They can have your car ready for you in a day." He informed her, as she looked up at him surprised.
He gazed into her honey doe eyes, then there was that familiar pound to his heart. "I-uh got there number. I'll call them for you so they can fill in an appointment to fix your car.” He scratched the back of his head uneasily whilst melting under her gaze.
"You'll do that for me?" She asked the man who was more than a foot taller than her petite frame. He could've been intimidating to her if he didn't offer to do such kind things for her. He gulped but slightly smiled, “With no problem.” She gave him another one of her blinding smiles, making him blush a little. Then ran up to the man and side-hugged him. "Thank you, kind gentleman!” He tensed at the sudden hug and cool sensation. “Hey, you’re wet!” She quickly pulled back and chuckled, “Oops, sorry.”
He offered to drive her home and she nodded, thanking him again. He just waved it off and helped her groceries in the back of his Jeep. He also reminded her that he phone was on the ground. Embarrassed, she thanked him as she picked it up. It wasn't a quite drive after she decided that he wasn't a bad guy. In fact, he was rather nice. Ichigo would think on the contrary.
When they first got in the car, she hit him with a bus load of questions. "So kind gentleman, what's your name?" She delightfully smiled. He put the key in ignition.
"Kurosaki. Kurosaki Ichigo." The Jeep started and he offered her a hint of a smile. Her held out her hand, "Great name, kind-oop. Kurosaki-kun!" She giggles at her clumsiness, and he simply smirked while shaking her hand. He drove onto the road.
"What's your name?" Though, he kinda already knew because of the old man. "My name is Inoue Orihime!" She chirped, gladly introducing herself, placing her hand on her hips. "A superwoman in disguise!" She tried to laugh boisterously. He raised any eyebrow at her antics. Okay, she’s kinda nuts. But what’s bad about that?
"So what do you do for a living?" She freely asked, he smirked while reaching in his box for a new cig. "I sell drugs." He said bluntly putting the cig in the corner of his mouth. He lit the cig amused as he looked her face of shock. "K-Kurosaki-kun...."
"Just kidding. I'm actually out of work." He chuckled and she caught on and laughed with him. "Jeez, don't scare me like that, Kurosaki-kun." He chuckled a bit, “Same question for you. What do you do for living?” Orihime hummed, “I’m a part-time baker downtown. But my dream job is to become a nurse. I’m currently going to school for that.”
Ichigo let out a puff of smoke, “Really? Sounds like you got it all planned.” She smiled at him, “I’m trying. It’s not easy as you can see with what happened with my car.” He nodded his head, “Well, you can’t predict everything.” And she agreed and the car was silent for a moment until she spoke again.
“So, would do you wish to be?” She asked him a question on which he doesn’t dwell on anymore. But he hummed and pondered, “I don’t know yet. Right now, I just want a job that’ll pay the bills.” Orihime nodded her head this time and thought for a moment, “You know, you’ll make a great car inspector. Or someone who works in mechanics.” He laughed at that.
“You’re just saying that because I just helped you out.” She laughed with him. “Perhaps.”
After a smooth, short ride. Which was too short for Ichigo personally. The two redheads made it to her home safely. "Welp, we're here." She announced as he drove into the apartment complex's parking lot. He park in a random spot, "Yep." Ichigo said, somewhat deflated.
Honestly, he enjoyed the conversation they had up until now. Sure, the more she spoke, the weirder she was but it in a wholesome manner. Anyway, he became comfortable with her and kinda wanted to see more of her. But he didn't know how to bring that part up since they were now at her crib, dropping her off. He didn't just want to spring the question: 'Ay, so I think you and me hit it off pretty well. So what about it? Six o'clock at Seymour's Restaurant?'
A pregnant pause loomed inside the car. She cleared her throat, adding to the awkwardness. "Would you-"
"So um-"
They both spoke at the same time. Another pause entered until Orihime broke it with a soft giggle. "You go first." She said, he smiled lightly. "Okay, I wanted to know if we could...um, you know. Keep in touch?" He asked, unsure if it sounded too creepy. She blinked at him.
He shuffled in his seat at her reaction and continued to talk. "I-I know we just met like 15 minutes ago, but keep in touch so I’d know if everything went right with your car and you seem like decent company and I thought- n-never mind. If you don't want to, it's fine-"
Orihime laughed, loudly this time. "Kurosaki-kun, it's fine." She pulled out a notepad and written something on it. After a few seconds, she handed the paper to him. "Here's my phone number. My phone is wet right now since I dropped it. But make sure you text me so that I can have your number.” Orihime handed Ichigo the slip of paper. He smirked, “I will. Take care and make sure not to throw your phone in anymore water due to anger.” She giggled and pumped her fist into the air, "I'll do my best!" Ichigo slightly shook his head. Then her smaller hand was placed on his larger hands, "I did enjoy meeting you, Kurosaki-kun. I think you're nice company too." She smiled sweetly making the guy next to her blush. He fiddled with his collar, trying to loosen the fabric.
"Yeah. I do my best.” Was all he said, as she grabbed her belongings and said her final goodbyes as she walked towards her apartment. This was about to be very interesting, he thought. Little did he know, that was also what Orihime Inoue was thinking.
The old man had just finished counting the money in the register and was about to move to sweeping the nasty floor. He was humming an old tone, till he heard a car door slam from outside.
He didn't pay it no mind until a man came running frantically to the register. "What in the ham sandwich-" He stopped as he recognized the face. "Boy, whatcha doing around here again?"
"I'll take it." The orange head said, trying to catch his breath. The old man squinted at him like he grew a second head, "Take what?"
Kurosaki Ichigo gave him the same look, only with a hint of determination. "What do think I mean? The damn job!” He said as Urahara blinked in shock. Then the owner started to smirk but before he could say anything, Ichigo beat him to it.
“And no, it’s not because of the girl, you perv.” Ichigo rolled his eyes as Urahara chuckled but gave him some paperwork.
“Sure, it’s not.”
end of chapter.

Day 01 - Warmth
Around half past ten, Orihime began to feel her eyelids grow heavy. The thick, heady atmosphere of the local bar had become overwhelming a couple of hours ago, but she had fought through it then on account of her friends. They were having a good time. She couldn't bring herself to ruin that.
If nothing else, she would need to see her best friend home safely. She had watched with bated breath as Tatsuki tossed back glass after glass of beer.
This wasn’t something they did, she and her friends, but it had been some time since they had all hung out and since that last time, not all of them had been of drinking age. As much as she had wanted to say no, she couldn’t deny their enthusiasm.
She’d been working on the same glass for the past two hours, truth be told. It was warm now, and hadn’t tasted very good to begin with. They were all half-tucked into a booth in some corner, and of course Tatsuki and Keigo were being particularly rowdy.
The bar itself was loud. Music blared, and several groups of salarymen shouted and laughed around them. This must have been a standard Friday night. Personally, after a work shift and a couple of classes, she felt a little too drained to be here.
Beside her, Tatsuki had begun to sing. Her body swayed against hers, hiccupping and giggling and shrieking when one of the boys chimed in with all the wrong words.
The booth formed a half-circle. The spot beside her had remained vacant most of the night, but right now, Ichigo scooted into that space as Keigo forced himself across the laps of their friends. His smile was an oasis, he leaned into her for a second to ask, “You okay, Inoue?”
“I’m okay,” she mumbled back, closing her fingers around her glass.
“Not really my scene, either,” he said.
She noted that he hadn’t had very much of his own drink.
“Wanna go outside for a bit?” he asked her.
After some shuffling around – forcing their friends out of the booth to let them out – they made their way out to fresh air.
It was the dead of winter. For the first moment or so she didn’t notice she’d forgotten her jacket. The cluttered heat of the bar had left her warm enough, but as they chose a spot away from the entrance, the chill began to shiver through her.
“How was work today?” he asked her. His jacket had also been left behind, but he managed to look much cozier than she felt. He wore a thick knitted sweater, patterned in black and dark gray, and a pair of old combat boots.
“It was okay,” she said, folding her arms against herself. She thought about leaving it at that, but the way he looked at her made her feel as if he knew there was more she wanted to say.
His smile was gentle and prompting, and his gaze was warm.
“My – My boss asked me how I felt about learning the trade a little more,” she said softly.
“More recipes?” he asked. His expression was telling. As much as he teased about the bread, he definitely never refused them.
“Well, the business aspect.” She rubbed her hands together, watching a group spill out from the bar. More salarymen, hanging off of each other for dear life. “I’ve been in charge of the marketing for a while – apparently! I thought posting on our social media accounts was just for fun, but he said it’s a big part of marketing. Today, he showed me our preferred vendors, then he showed me how we pay them. And then he showed me the budget and stuff.”
“He’s showing you how to run the business,” Ichigo said, brows raised. “Is he trying to promote you?”
“Not sure,” she murmured, before breathing onto her hands. “It was pretty quick. He had me back at the front end afterwards.”
“Would you want to run the business?”
“That’s the million dollar question,” she sighed, wrapping her arms around herself. “Is this what I want? I can’t figure out what I want to study. It feels like I’ve hit a wall and I’m running out of time.”
“That’s not true,” he said softly. “You have plenty of time to decide.”
“I mean, you say that, but…”
“No, I mean that,” he continued. He had moved a little closer, and in the remaining space between them she could feel the warmth radiating off of him. She felt herself trembling, and she ground her teeth together to keep them from chattering. “You’re so smart, Inoue. You’ll figure it out, and even if you don’t…”
He hesitated, and for the life of her she couldn’t figure out what he was trying to say. His fingers curled and uncurled into the sleeve of his opposite arm, thinking, but he never continued the thought.
“Hey, buddy!” a foreign voice shouted at them.
They both jumped a little in response. The group that had spilled out of the bar had found a little spot in the middle of the street, half of them sitting on the ground and the other half trying to map their way back to their homes. And at that moment, one of them – sitting with his legs splayed and his shirt fully unbuttoned – was shouting at them both.
Face red, words slurred, he said specifically to Ichigo: “Buddy! Are you blind or something? Your girl is freezing her ass off out here! Share a little of that body heat, would you?”
Ichigo’s head jerked toward her, and before she could start in on reassurances and downplaying and such, he quickly took both her hands in his.
His warmth was blissful, and while she shut her eyes, allowing him to link his fingers through her own, he hissed at how cold her hands were. “Why didn’t you say anything?” he mumbled, pulling her hands toward him. He cupped them toward his mouth and she couldn’t even bring herself to feel embarrassed when he started breathing warmth back into them.
“I barely noticed,” she said.
“Liar.”
A nervous giggle bubbled from her chest before she could help it.
“Let’s go inside.”
Tatsuki half stood on the seat, clutching Orihime’s coat in one hand and banging the other fist against the table. As soon as she spotted them she yelled, “There you are – forgot your jacket! What were you thinkin’!”
Ishida, who looked decidedly more sober than her, collected the coat before Tatsuki could spill anything with it. “I think it’s time we call it a night,” he said as he placed it in Orihime’s hands.
“One more round!” Keigo shouted over him.
Orihime shrugged on the coat as the waitress was flagged down. Outside, their friends spilled into separate cars. Mizuiro manned one, which even in Tatsuki’s state of mind she refused to get into. Sado, Ishida, and Keigo looked very much like a group of clowns squeezing into his sedan with him.
Ichigo manned the only other car. He half-carried Tatsuki – her arms wound about his neck as she mumbled nonsense into his ear – and tucked her into the backseat carefully. She sprawled across it, and for several minutes Ichigo struggled to get her to curl her legs into the car. Tatsuki giggled uncontrollably, kicking, and Ichigo cursed quietly as he caught at her ankles to stop her.
“Tatsuki,” Orihime chastised softly, reaching for her from the passenger seat. It settled her pretty quickly, and Ichigo was finally able to shut the door safely.
“Okay,” he sighed as he finally settled into the driver’s seat. “What’s the plan?”
“I’ll have her stay the night with me,” Orihime said. “She might get a little sick tonight.”
“Good thinking,” he replied, and routed them to her apartment.
She led him into her room, where they carefully tucked Tatsuki into bed. “Thanks for helping,” she said as she shut out the lights.
“Don’t mention it,” he sighed, rolling his shoulders. “Just wanted to see you home.”
“Are you thirsty or anything?” she asked, smiling.
He thought about it. “Do you have anything warm?”

Ten Words, Five Lifetimes, One Love
I was inspired to do the "one word prompt-one sentence fic" thing, but I played fast and loose with the rules, so some of these are two sentences, haha. I think usually it's 50 words/sentences, but I decided to start with 10 to not overwhelm myself! I hope to add on more to this work eventually though! :D
https://archiveofourown.org/works/46605418/chapters/117365740
1. Luminous Her hair is bright and shiny, her eyes sparkle with inner light. But Ichigo thinks that most luminous of all is her smile.
2. Scorching The feeling of Ichigo's soul is rough and fierce, like it could burn anything, but it never scorches her. The feeling of Orihime's soul is passionate and warm, as the sun itself, but it never scorches him.
3. Bellowing He sees her struck down, and he bellows her name in horror, fearing the loss of his heart.
4. Gentle People say he's a rude punk, that he's violent and crude. But she knows how kind and gentle his heart is.
5. Carefree Even after all they've been through, Ichigo loves her ability to laugh and to smile and to love as if nothing was ever wrong. He thinks he could live such a carefree way, one day.
6. Cathartic When they kiss for the first time, it is as if the weight of years of longing disappears in a cathartic explosion.
7. Somberness Orihime is a happy person, but even she has her sorrows. When her smile fades, he never fails to feel somber himself.
8. Garden When they move into their first house, she decides to make a garden. One flower for every person they've ever saved. It ends up being a really big garden.
9. Crunch Her latest culinary work looks disastrous, and when she lists the ingredients, it sounds like the work of madness. Ichigo has learned the difference between madness and genius by now, and bites into it with a loud "crunch".
10. Comfort Even in the midst of all their troubles, be they supernatural or mundane, deadly serious or minor irritations, they can always find comfort in each other.

A visit to Orihime's house. (🧡Contains Ichihime,some swearing, and slight suggestive themes🧡)
Tumblr media
*Ichigo's pov* About a week ago, I went to Orihime's house for the first time. When I say the first time, I mean by myself.(A few months ago, I asked her out.) So we were trying out all sorts of dates. (They've all been successful😏) This time, I was heading to her house for tea. But, I planned on suprising her with a new cake I bought. (Since Orihime works at a bakery, she knows every cake flavor) I was busy fixing my jacket, when I heard a familiar annoying voice. "Ichigo! Your seriously going to Orihime's house!?" It was Kon. Ever since we started dating, Kon's started desperately trying to go with me. Everywhere. "It's a no." I said flatly. I didn't have time for that. "Godammit, Ichigo!" Kon yelled. "You never take me anywhere!" I scoffed. "What kind of idiot would walk around with a stuffed bear?" I said. (I'm 18 years old, for god's sake.) He huffed. "Why can't you just tell Orihime I'm a stuffed bear you bought her!" He shouted. That's when I started getting pissed. "That way, I can finally be squished in between her massive-" Before he could finish his sentence, I stomped on him. "Your not gonna do jack-shit." I said through clenched teeth. He was shouting other things, but I couldn't understand him. That's when I remembered something. I glanced down at my watch. It was 1:00. I was supposed to be at Orihime's place 12. I grabbed the cake and zipped down the stairs. .
*Orihime's pov*
I was so nervous at the time. I was pacing back and forth, wondering what could be taking Ichigo so long. Was it a hollow? His sisters? A kungfu rabbit? I couldn't pick one. I didn't know if he was in trouble or lost track of time. That is, until I heard the doorbell ring. I opened the door to Ichigo. A out of breath, sweating Ichigo. (I still hope he didn't see how red my face got) "Orihime," he said through breaths. "Yeah?" I said. My heartbeat was getting quicker by a minute. (I'm gonna be honest, seeing Ichigo like this. Opened my eyes to whole new world of attractiveness) "Suprise." He said holding a white box. I wasn't sure what it was, until a sweet scent hit my nose. "Is this the new apple crumble cake, I saw?!" I know that aroma anywhere. Ichigo smiled and nodded. Then muttered 'So much for a surprise' I laughed to myself and grabbed his hand. "Come on in, I bought a new candle!" I said pulling him inside. In a way, it was a good thing Ichigo was late. The sun ended up shining right in my window! (Perfect lighting!🤩)
*Ichigo's pov*
When I walked in, a blast of Caribbean peach hit my nose. (I was at the store with her when she bought it) Her livingroom looked alot different than I remembered. Sure, I was only there once, but it looked completely remodeled. "Nice place you got here." I said. 'Was that too casual?' I wondered. She gave me a cute smile. "Thank you, Tatsuki and Keigo decorated it for my birthday." She said, twirling a bit. I chuckled, and sat down. (Keigo?) Then Orihime grabbed my arm. "Oh, we're not sitting here." Huh? "We're going to my room!" She said smiling again. (Well, she's always smiling when I'm around😏) Embarrassingly, my face did turn red. "Y-your room?" I repeated. She nodded and offered her hand to me. I inhaled and grabbed her hand. Apparently, Tatsuki redesigned her room as well. My heart pounded when a picture of me and her on Orihime's night stand. While I was admiring the picture, Orihime was setting up. "Ichigo," She said. "Yes?" I said putting the picture back. "Here's your pillow!," she said passing me a mint green pillow. "I'll be back with the tea." Before I could reply, she said dashed out of the room.
*Orihime's pov*
I slowly closed the door. (Well after I saw Ichigo sit down) I took a breath, and squealed. I couldn't help it, Ichigo was actually in my room! I'm covered my mouth, but couldn't help but giggle. This was really happening. I skipped to the kitchen, feeling better than ever. When I grabbed the tea tray, I started to remember Tatsuki's boyfriend tips. Bring to the room, talk,... what else did she say? I couldn't remember at the time (or now😅) so I decided to shrug it off. Unfortunately, I couldn't skip back, since I didn't want be break anything. After somehow opening the door with my foot, I was ready. "Ichigo, I got the tea!" I said gleefully. My voice immediately cut off when I saw Ichigo. His face was stuffed into one of my teddy bears. I had to stifle the laugh in my throat. What was he doing that for? When he pulled his face out, he was breathing hard again. "It smells just like her." He muttered before putting his face back into its stomach. This was a bit much for my heart. (And my arms were starting to hurt) I cleared my throat. "Well it is my favorite to hug." I said, startling Ichigo.
*Ichigo's pov*
The moment I heard Orihime's voice, I tossed the bear aside. (She simply smiled at me.) Since I didn't have a believable excuse, I quickly changed the subject. "Lemme get that for you." I said standing up. "I got it." She insisted. As usual, I took it from her anyway. As I set the tray down on the table, my foot nearly slipped from under me. Luckily, I braced myself, but that didn't stop me from letting a few cuss words fly. Like anytime I swore, Orihime snickered. (I still don't why she thinks it's funny) After getting situated, Orihime poured the tea, and I was gonna cut the cake. That is until I saw the whole thing was crumbled. On instinct, I slapped my hand against my forehead. (I don't what I expected, I ran pretty fast) "Something wrong, Ichigo?" Orihime asked, pressing her shoulder against mine. I didn't say anything, just pointed at the cake. She looked at it and then back at me. My face reddened a bit. Why was she staring at me? "Ichigo," she said. I braced for impact. "Did you run all the way here?" Wait... how'd she know?
*Orihime's pov*
From his expression, I was right. ( They were leaves in his hair🤭) Ichigo's cheeks turned red and he looked away. Which made me feel bad. I didn't mean to poke fun, I was honestly asking a question! I hugged onto Ichigo's arm. "But, I'm sure it still tastes good." I said, hoping that'd cheer him up. He turned and smiled. "Only one way to find out."
After alot of cutting, we finally managed to get 3 pieces. (1 for Ichigo, 2 for me) Unfortunately, most of the apples fell of the cake, so Ichigo asked if I wanted one. It was whipped cream on the apples, so of course I said yes. He grabbed one, motioned to me to bring my plate over. But, I opened my mouth instead. (Something Tatsuki said I should do) "What are doing?" He asked, with a confused smile. I pointed at my mouth. He chuckled and placed the whipped cream covered apple in my mouth. When Ichigo pulled his hand away, I remembered something. Tatsuki told me to bite down on his fingers! "Shoot!" I accidentally said out loud.
*Ichigo's pov*
Uh, wait? Did she break her tooth, or something? (Believe me, it happens) "Are you okay?" I asked. I was gonna worried. Her cheeks turned red. "I'm fine!" She said. "I just bit my tongue." She said looking elsewhere. I kinda had the feeling she was lying, but didn't press the subject. As long as she's okay. I laughed in my throat. "Does it taste good?" She nodded. After eating in silence for awhile, Orihime crawled up on her bed. I was content with the pillow, until she patted the spot next to her. So I got and sat next to her. Unfortunately, I didn't know her blankets poofed up her bed, so I nearly felt into it. Orihime laughed and kissed me on the cheek. Which made me blush. "That's not funny." I said under my breath. "It was too, Ichigo!" She said. "You were all 'Holy crap!'" She said imitating the way I fell. Not gonna lie, it did look really funny, but I didn't want to let her know that. "Alright, alright, stop it." I said starting to laugh. Which immediately cut off when I saw Orihime stuck her tongue out at me. That's it. Time for revenge.
*Orihime's pov*
I was busy having a laugh, when I felt Ichigo's hands on my waist. "Ichigo-" my voice cut off. He started tickling me! I burst into laughter. This wasn't fair. I tried to get away, but he laid me down. (Still tickling me🤭) "Hold still, geez." Ichigo said with a big smile. I was having fun, until Ichigo brought his hands up further. Which did tickle. But in a completely different way. I had to stop him. I intended to move my hands, but moved my leg. Right into Ichigo's *ehem* (😶) We froze. He inhaled sharply, and spoke. "All you had to do was say stop." He said in a weak voice. "I'm sorry!" I said. What kinda girlfriend knees her boyfriend in the treasures? He simply shrugged it off. (Although his eyes looked wet) A laugh started to build in my throat, but I stifled it. But the more I thought about it, the funnier it got. Ichigo must've noticed me wavering, because he stared into my eyes. "Don't laugh, I'm in pain." That got me. I burst into laughter again. I couldn't help it. Apparently, Ichigo couldn't either, because he started to laugh with me. After a few more minutes of laughing, we stopped for air. It immediately got hard to breathe, Ichigo's chest was pressed against mine! Unfortunately, this led to me thinking about the other stuff pressed against me. "Orihime." He said, pulling me from my thoughts.
*Ichigo's pov*
My heart was beating like crazy. I stared into her beautiful brown eyes. Before I could stop myself, I kissed her. (We've only kissed a few times) When I pulled away, Orihime's face was red. Once again, my body moved on its own. It's not like I didn't want to kiss her, I just wondered why I felt like I had to. I pulled to breathe and then continued. In the middle of it, I felt Orihime's arms wrapped around my back. I felt a shiver up my spine. That's when I finally realized what might be happening. I raised up. "Orihime." I said, through breaths. "Can... I continue?" I asked, starting to tug on my sweater. She blushed and nodded. I smiled and laid her back down. Right before I got started, Orihime's phone rang. Let's just say, it scared the hell out of the both of us. I got up so she could get her phone. Turns out, it was Tatsuki. Figures. After Orihime rushed Tatsuki, there was a awkward silence in the room. "Um," She thought for a second. "So, Tatsuki and Keigo will be here in a bit, so..." Her voice trailed off. "Mm." I simply nodded.
I wanted to ask her she wanted if wanted to "finish up", but my throat felt closed.
*Orihime's pov*
I wanted to say something, but I couldn't find the right words. So I simply used body language. I walked over to the bed and hugged him. I stroked his hair. His arms curled around my back. "Maybe next time?" I offered. Sure, the mood was perfect right now but they'll be other chances. ...Right? He chuckled. "It's a date, then." I sighed of relief. I was so glad he wasn't mad. That's when something struck me. "Ichigo," I said. "Do you think Tatsuki and Keigo are dating?" Ichigo's eyes widened. He probably didn't think of it before🤭
The end🧡
*Extra*
The moment they walked in, I was onto Keigo. I simply slung my arm over his shoulder and smiled. "So, Keigo, how've you been?" I was trying to fake the friendliness, but apparently the real was showing. "Uh, I've been fine." He answers, looking for way to escape. "Muziro isn't still stealing your girls, is he?" I said, starting to hint. "Nope, not at all." Now I knew he was lying. Only a few girls are immune to Muziro. I was about a ask another question, when Tatsuki cut me off. "Let him go Ichigo." She said in a stern tone. I immediately pulled my arm away. (Tatsuki was still scary as ever) Keigo sighed. "Whew, thanks, babe." The whole room stopped. Tatsuki blushed, Keigo slapped his hand over his mouth, and me and Orihime were in shock. I inhaled and started cracking up. "Shut up, Ichigo!" Tatsuki said, blushing. Orihime simply stared at Keigo. (Who buried his face in a pillow) I'm on the other hand, couldn't laughing. "Of all the guys, you chose Keigo!?" I said through laughs. She frowned and clenched her fist. Before I knew it, I was whacked in the face with a pillow. Looming over me was Tatsuki. "Don't you ever talk about him like that!" She said while tapping her elbow. Holy shit.

What is your favorite dialogue you’ve written so far?
For any project you choose
We all know Moon likes dialogue.
Super partial to this one at the moment.
“And you just…kept liking me because I was funny?”
Shaking her head, Orihime sent him a gentle smile. “You understood me. I never knew how to explain just how big a hole Onii-chan’s death left in my life because no one else really seemed to understand except Sado-kun and Ishida-kun. But, I didn’t even have to explain it to you. You just knew. And you accepted all my weird habits that I inherited from him. I don’t think you understand just how many times you saved me.”

This story is an AU that takes place in a different timeline where Orihime dies young and becomes a Soul Reaper.
There are so many implications when taking Orihime out of the events of the Bleach we all know and love, but I’m not going to address those in this story. In order to tell this tale, I have to ignore those and just get on with it. But, you may find some characters alive, that otherwise died in the canon arcs. You can attribute those to ‘butterfly wing changes’ in the events that took place without her there. So, I hope you can set your preconceived notions aside and just enjoy this little tale.

LOVED your response to the ichihime ask about ichigo's feelings, and i guess i wanted to add to it by asking how you would envision ichigo's crush on her, what kind of thoughts he would think, because he's very hard to read in the romance department lol
i got another ask similar to this one about ichigo's feelings, but my inbox seems to have eaten it up because i don't see it here anymore (even though the number of unread asks it says i have still hasn't changed...), so i guess i'll answer them both here
i mean, we know their first meeting had a big impact on ichigo, even if orihime herself doesn't remember the encounter, and we also know based on what he says to rukia that he'd kind of been keeping an eye on her ever since their paths crossed in high school, so i'd say it began as a kindred soul thing: she lost someone close to her, he lost someone close to him, he knows what it's like, so he can't help but keep an eye out for her, worry about her, etc. he notes that she gets hurt every day, so i'm guessing it was a kind of situation where he'd be minding his own business or going his own way and then out of the corner of his eye, he hears/catches sight of her getting into something clumsy as usual. a dropped book here, a loud crash there.
i'd say his feelings at this time are pretty similar to orihime's feelings in the 'one way sympathies' chapter. he begins to understand her or feel closer to her because of this loss, but they're not necessarily close friends so he can't explain why he feels close to her. he mostly just ignores it all as background noise unless she's directly in front of him. we also know that she told him about her brother and her hairpins some time pre-canon, so maybe she brought it up in casual conversation once ("i never go anywhere without them" etc etc) and ichigo remembered it because he remembers seeing her and sora at the clinic and he knows how much sora meant to her. it's not unreasonable to guess that, having sisters of his own, he could kind of put himself in that situation and feel vehement about that happening to his own sisters. who would take care of them if he died? little sisters need big brothers, and having lost hers, ichigo probably couldn't help but really feel for her.
i think it's important to remember that ichigo ends up caring about people deeply very easily. after orihime encourages him to save rukia, and after she accompanies him with his other friends to help him fight a battle that has nothing to do with her, i think it's safe to say he's touched and he considers her a friend–and a cherished one at that, since she ends the arc by telling him she's sorry she couldn't protect him. ichigo doesn't get to hear people say things like that to him often, because he's....usually the one saying them. so his face in that moment speaks of fondness, tenderness, maybe even a little gratitude as orihime cries about his well-being.
ichihime really gets its push in the HM arc, though, i mean it's no surprise that the amount of ichihime fanfics probably tripled in number after the arc began. and for good reason! it's kind of incredible how many times orihime gets singled out this arc even before she gets kidnapped, like the time ichigo promised to protect her, even though chad and tatsuki were also there and also injured. it's clear that he feels like he's got something to prove in front of her, and i think, at the time, he justifies it to himself as needing to make it up to her because he let his own insecurities about his hollow get in the way of protecting her from yammy. and i don't think he's even lying to himself about it. ichigo was very, very occupied with his own trauma and the plot constantly happening all the time so i think he was satisfied with surface-level reasons of, "she's a pacifist, she has trauma with her brother and THAT'S why i've got to personally make it up to her."
but i do think, deep down, he has this tendency to only ever want to look good and strong and kind in orihime's eyes, because he likes the way she looks at him when she lets some of that love and admiration shine through. he's seen it before and i think he's a little addicted to it, because when he later remembers moments where he was proud to be a shinigami, orihime shows up there twice, both times crying about how much she cares about him lol. he clearly loves it whenever she expresses her feelings for him, though i don't think he's examining it as anything deeper than the simple joy of making his friends happy.

the repeated hand motif is another thing that i think is an important indicator of how ichigo feels at the time. here's a post i made about it a while ago that never came out of the drafts:

all this to say, i think ichigo has a feeling all throughout the HM arc that orihime left her heart with him when she said goodbye. he doesn't know how to justify this feeling, just that it exists and it's strong and he needs to prove to her that he won't be letting her down. the anime surprisingly rounds this out nicely by having ichigo hold her hand after the grimmjow fight, but so much of ichigo's behavior this arc feels like the narrative's response to orihime's insecurities about their bond in chapter 199. ichigo does some pretty balls-to-the-walls crazy things this arc for orihime, so it's kind of like he's responding to her confession with magnanimous action of his own (though he doesn't know that's what he's doing; it's subconscious behavior, coming from the part of him that heard her even when he himself was asleep—his heart. this repeats for a second time when he dies at the tower but his heart hears her again. not the physical, beating thing of course, but the metaphysical thing that transcends physical form). what does orihime mean to him at this point in the story? he would say she's his friend, of course, but to us it's clear that their bond continually reminds him of what he's fighting for. he sealed his promise to her with the kanji that makes up his name. his life's purpose lies in protecting people, and as long as there's someone to protect, someone he promised to protect, he'll never die.
fullbring arc shakes things up by a) having them get closer as friends who share mundane interests, like reading the same manga or sharing mutual friends (esp tatsuki, who he seems to have made up with) or just chilling and hanging out in his room and b) having him actually acknowledge that orihime wants to protect him, too, and is now actually capable of doing that. before, ichigo could easily brush her under the wing of his protection, but it's here that he's got to contend with the fact that he might have an equal soon—a potential battle partner, which is something he's never had before going into horn of salvation.
which brings us to the 10-year-timeskip. i've said it before, but once the surface-level reason of wanting to protect her, just like he wants to protect everyone, is swept away, i do think he's got time and space to consider the fact that he might actually have a crush on her. AKA, this, to me, is the first time he realizes it for what it is and says it out loud to himself. he's always been able to distract himself or justify his feelings to himself using plot events before, but they're in a period of peace now and that's when i think he realizes that he wants to be with her. i don't think he could have ever had that realization if he was still paranoid about her safety, because duty comes first to him, but now that he's not, i think he realizes that he just likes spending time with her and spending hours in his room, with or without their friends, just talking and relaxing. they grew up together and she's seen every side of him—pre-powers, shinigami, hollow, quincy, powerless, what have you—so i think it moves him, knowing that she's been by his side through it all, seeing him up close in all his forms and versions, and maybe he's ready now for her to see what he's like as a lover too. if she'd love that version of him, just like she did with everything else! he's sensitive and protective of his own feelings, so he'd only make that move once he had a guarantee that it would be accepted. that he would be accepted. and orihime has obviously always tried to accept him for who he is, even when he was at his worst, so he feels safe in giving this side to her too!
