I was dared to put it in here so here we go.

Long soty short, one of our players left the campaign, and since her character was my characters girlfriend, he is now single and ready to mingle.

And then there is this one, totally most likely a villain, who is a long lost twin of the other character, that I would like to have a shot at. But since her twin brother is as stable as uranium on a seesaw our every encounter develops into... an altercation.

So as any serious adult I made my DM a powerpoint presentation on why they should give me an ocassion to charm our maybe-not-but-most-probably-a-villainess.

On Models of Magic

A lot has been on my mind Magically

I do like the idea of Animism, but also the Psychological model, but also the Energy model. It really does feel like there are threads amongst them all? Like many who practice Animism talk a lot about being older than humanity who will be here long after we are gone. And that speaks too much of Hierarchy to me. As if such things are somehow on a level “above”. However, I can see spiritual things existing in an ecosystem

Psychological models definitely appeal to my science and investigative mind. However, as a phenomenological study, my own experience of magic suggest something more than pure psychology

And energy models are fascinating and describe a complex metaphysics that aligns well with current models of the universe. But there’s almost something TOO materialistic about it. Too much trying to appeal to epistemological ideas that are not it’s own

My proposed synthesis is thus:

There is a “substance”, in that it has Qualities that make it That Particular Thing. A Hylomorphic Soul, a substance of Particularity. Somewhere in our Embodiment, that Negation that Creates Itself, is this Substance found not only in ourselves but also our environment

If we all are continually in an act of Creation of not only Ourself but our Environments by our Embodiment, a Hylomorphic Self defined by our continual Meaning-Making. Which itself is an Ecosystem of Selves…

Then maybe We are all really defining our Own Magic? Maybe, rather than some Perennialist Nonsense, the Metaphysics of any magical system is True, inasmuch as the Magician is wielding this capital-S Substance within themselves and their environment. Whether they believe in magic or not. Under any model. Two magical systems can be wholly incompatible but contain Truths, even those that do not agree.

Magic as a flexing of and wielding of our Ecosystem of Selves, which is our Soul, which persists over time, and extends into our Environment. Suggesting a spiritual ecosystem created by all these Souls, and their Environments, even non-human animals and plants, but not suggesting a Hierarchy to the Immanent, but allowing for Transcendence because your Particularity is still a Truth even after the physical form of your body ceases to be. Suggesting whatever afterlife may be there for you would be based on the Environment of your Selves, which is your Soul, and as grand or simple or nonexistent as you yourself deigned it to be

Because you’re creating it every day by how you engage with yourself and the world around you, you’re an ever convoluting fractal, a natural garden changing with every moment. And Magic is how we flex and wield this Phenomenon, this Meaning-Making, whether you believe in Hard, Soft, or Purely Materialist forms of Magic.

Everything is Permitted, because every Phenomena Experienced by a Magician is a Real Change of their Embodied and Extended Self, which is itself an Ecosystem of Spiritual Forces, which is in an constant act of Creation, which would persist as a Hylomorphic Soul even after the Material of the body ceases to be, Existing in that Environment of its Creation, continuing to Create as Creation by Negation is to Exist

Describe Your Blog Meme

I wasn’t tagged by anyone, but @chyrstis​ said “just about anybody” so I’m going to do it. Also not going to tag anybody; if you want to do it? Have at it.

1. Icon: Technically a character from my novel series, but at the time, she looked enough like me to be a good icon. Honestly, I should change it to the one I commissioned to reflect my quasi-recent haircut, but I haven’t got around to it yet.

2. Content: I’m another LJ refugee, but I figured out the queue and reblog thing really damn fast. So mostly it’s cute animals, funny or weird shit, inspirational stuff, ace pride... For the stuff that’s my own, there’s occasional fic, rants about work, and a terrible lot of me Having Opinions. I have side blogs, but the one I use most often is the one for my D&D group write-ups.

3. Letter color: Black on white. I could use something else, but this is clear and fairly simple.

4. URL: Taken from Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series - generally known as Thessaly or Larissa, last of the Thessalian witches, woman feared by all the gods. Originally it was a username I took to distance myself from my original username when my first fandom became ... untenable for me. I’ve just stuck with it ever since.

5. Header: Made by @ichimakesart​ - sort of. Art I commissioned for my D&D group. The group size and makeup has changed a bit since then, but I haven’t had the discretionary funds to commission the entire group all over again, so this’ll do.

6. Blog title: Thess vs the World

Sometimes - okay, most of the time - it feels like I’m more or less at war with a world that perpetually wants me to not be happy, healthy, comfortable, sane, or even alive at times. The bits that aren’t directly against me are often things I cannot let pass without opposing in some way. So behold the Social Justice Barbarian, taking arms against a world that needs to be kinder.

So, just in case you don't know. This is Monkey King. Wild tiefling that spended most of his life in the Jungle among monkeys and apes. With Mufti the Judge always by his side.

5. On an average day, what can be found in your character’s pockets?

Kumquats, some cookies from Viktoria, ballbearings, remnants of the skull of the last Monkey King, and Mufti's collection of seeds from various fruits.

6. Does your character have recurring themes in their dreams?

Fire

Voices that speak in language of hissing smoke and scorching ambers.

19. What is your character’s biggest relationship flaw? Has this flaw destroyed relationships for them before?

Distrust I think.

You can't destroy a relationship if you didn't even tried to have one... His conviction that he is selfreliant, that he doesn't need anyone, almost cost him to loose everyone that came close to call his friends... and his last chance for love.

20. In what ways does your character compare themselves to others? Do they do this for the sake of self-validation, or self-criticism?

He would say he doesn't need validation and there is nothing to criticise. There is nothing to compare! He is the great Monkey King! He became strong by himself, they should compare themselves to him!

But he has a strong sense of rivality.

35. How does your character behave around people they like?

He is still learning how to do it. Showing someone that he likes them is still foreign to him. But he decided to try. He is not afraid to touch Viktoria. He knows that his companions are not evil and won't hurt him. But when he forgets his doubts he's playful, eager to laugh, he would love to do more pranks on snooty rich people with them.

Thess vs MCM Expo Spring 2019 - Day 1

I forgot to bring my GW2 liner notes for Troy Baker to sign, so I just went for a really awesome head shot. Our conversation while I was having my little pre-autograph moment was as follows:

Me: Really, I’m here mostly for Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Him: You have excellent taste in games. Republic or Empire?

Me: Both. (cue stunned look from Mr Baker) But my main is a Jedi Consular.

Him: *signs calling me “Rebel scum!”* That’s awesome.

Me: Thank you; have a wonderful time at the con!

Him: You too!

No, I did not have the heart to tell him that I haven’t actually played since soon after KOTET dropped. Besides, I am Rebel scum! Just like @generalmaximus.

(Thought of you as soon as I saw that, man. Hope you’re doing okay.)

After that, I milled around looking at things. There are some awesome panels upcoming. But mostly I was there for the Comic Zone, which most cons call Artist’s Alley. I was there because I promised myself I’d look for an artist to do art of the two of my D&D players who don’t have @ichimakesart art. I found a charming young man from South Wales going by Marco Drago who does some fantastic stuff, so Nai and Ava will have shiny new art (though the actual posting it on a title screen is going to a little wonky owing to having to take a picture of it, at least until I can borrow the scanner at work). We talked D&D characters for awhile and I am going to blend him a scent blend for his shiny new drow sorcerer - not because he asked me to, or because I’m being paid to, but because the prices he gave for the commissions were ... well, let’s just say that a) I’m on my fourth read-through of In An Absent Dream and I believe in giving fair value, and b) I was in a Marie Kondo kind of frame of mind in that I was determined to bounce around finding ways to spark joy. Also I am going back and buying the Ace pin badge I saw on his stall when I go back to pick up my art. I just ran out of change.

Which is how I wound up having a really great conversation with James Gifford, who’s starting a Kickstarter sometime next month that needs to happen. He’s got some of the best ideas for magical items and he’s running the Kickstarter to get them printed on flash cards. It’s fantastic stuff and I may go back now that my main expenditures are done and buy his comic, because it looked fun and the online version bears that out and damnit, I want to actually put money in his hand for it.

Also I bought dice. Because dice are a thing that have to happen. And I got a free pin badge and so many business cards.

Two more days of fun and some really interesting looking panels and I may skip the Nolan North autograph because fuck it, Troy Baker called me Rebel scum. I can live with that. But now my feet hurt so I am going to go lie down.

Thess vs Art Assets

...Aw hell, now I need to raise some money and see if @ichimakesart will be kind enough to revise that art she did of the Cupcake Coterie. Again.

Well, I’ll find something suitably elfish to use in the meantime. I just hope that this is the last time the party changes overmuch. It’s kind of nice to have Flitty in the intro sequence, just as a fun little aside, but ... mnegh.
