Sozin's Comet Part 3: Into the Inferno Re-Watch

Wow, I'll be honest I forgot how many parts this finale had (& thank goodness because it's way too much to cover in one post.) While I've randomly re-watched various episodes of this show a lot, this is my first time doing a full re-watch & only my second time re-watching these finale episodes. That's because....well, this finale doesn't fuck around!

Let's get right into it. I gotta be petty & say it's kinda funny this show is so disdainful of its own main "romance" (& calling it that is a stretch) that they have Katara & Zuko go together on a ride or die life or death journey to the Fire Nation after baiting their noncanon romance quite a bit in the last few episodes. Fun! I'll briefly address that I know a lot of you guys don't like the setup for the Zuko Vs. Azula fight, & it's certainly a little flawed but...& this might be a hot take - Zuko showing up during Azula's coronation to claim the throne & the two of them having an Agni Kai does make a certain amount of narrative sense. It's just that a few details about the setup itself (the time it takes to get from Ba Sing Se to the Fire Nation, Iroh knowing that Azula would be crowned Firelord, in general, the buildup to Zuko's decision to become Firelord) could have been executed a little better. But I still love the beautiful tragedy of the final Agni Kai & I still think it was overall set up well save for a few details.

Zuko Vs. Ozai I would argue is pretty perfectly set up by the previous episode. Aang is ready for this fight. And Ozai is ready for genocide - & showing off his abs! I'm sorry if this upsets some of you but Ozai is getting +1000 iconic behavior points for stripping off his shirt for this fight & generally acting like a dramatic king. Yes trying to burn the world to the ground is pretty bad, but Ozai sure does manage to be a fun-to-watch villain while he does it. I only wish we'd gotten more scenes showcasing Ozai's personality & badassery throughout Book 3 to really set him up as the Final Boss.

I can really appreciate that Aang is out of his comfort zone here. Throughout this entire show, Aang has been an evasive fighter. He's not aggressive. He prefers to deftly outmaneuver his opponents & cause them to wear themselves out rather than attacking directly himself. Aang doesn't have that option this time. First of all, Ozai is just a very aggressive fighter who is determined to take Aang down. Second of all, this is the big battle - Aang needs to do something to take Ozai down, & he knows it. I have to appreciate that Aang offers Ozai the chance to back down. Obviously, it seems silly - of course Ozai won't take this chance. But it means something that Aang offers it anyway.

Sokka, Suki, & Toph's mission feels so desperate & scary. Toph gets +1000 iconic behavior points for her badass metal bending. Then Sokka comes up with a plan that will help protect the earth-kingdom but also might just kill them & shit gets real when they're separated from Suki. My heart dropped during that scene. Sokka protectively crouching over Toph just makes me so emotional. +1000 iconic behavior points to Sokka for this insane & potentially suicidal but brave plan.

Speaking of being emotional.....Let's get into the beginning of the end for my favorite emotionally damaged war criminal. Azula's downfall is heartbreaking. I didn't understand what was happening the first time that I watched this show, & I was just confused about why Azula was banishing everyone until it slowly crept up on me that she was paranoid after Mai & Ty Lee's betrayal. This show is incredibly well-written & as I'm re-watching again having put a completely normal & not at all insane amount of thought into Azula's characterization, I realize that it's so much more complicated than that. Azula was abandoned as a small child by her mother, who she believed never cared about her. Later, her brother is banished & after she finally gets him back, he abandons her too - for reasons she cannot understand. Then Mai & Ty Lee too. No wonder she can't trust anyone.

And even if it weren't for all of these people turning on Azula for reasons she doesn't get, Azula was taught that "trust is for fools, fear is the only reliable way" by her genocidal egomaniac father who burned her brother in front of her when she was eleven. The same father who just abandoned her (just like everyone else does) to fulfill a rather pointless role (now that he's the Phoenix King). I'm not sorry but what the actual fuck is wrong with people who can't sympathize with --- nope, I'm just. I'm....moving on, let's continue the analysis.

Let's talk about the mirror scene for a second. This is another scene that's been highly analyzed & discussed already but I want to talk about it a little anyway. It's important to remember that this is a hallucination, meaning that what we're seeing is what some part of Azula's mind is conjuring up. Ursa doesn't call Azula a monster, interestingly. She says "I love you, Azula, I do." Is this what Azula remembers her mother saying? What she wants to believe her mother is saying? We just don't know because we are simply not given enough information, but I think it could be a mix of both.

I also think it's very interesting that Ursa says "I think you're confused." Again, this is some part of Azula's own mind manifesting. I think this is pretty strong evidence that Azula knows that she's wrong - this as well as the comment in 'The Beach' about believing herself to be a monster - but I don't think she has the context to really understand how or why she's wrong. How could she? She's never had the opportunity to learn from sources outside the Fire Nation, or adults other than her father, the way that Zuko did.

And then of course....we have the showdown that breaks my heart the most. Zuko & Azula's Final Agni Kai. When Azula says "I'm sorry it had to end this way, brother," & Zuko says "No, you're not," that truly is the culmination of their entire relationship, isn't it? And it's so devastatingly tragic because it didn't have to be this way - they could have been normal siblings, in another life - but at the same time, it did always have to be this way, because of generations of toxicity, because of Ozai & his choices. +1000 iconic behavior points to each of the fire siblings for being dramatic fucked-up bitches.

I think that Azula really is sorry it has to end this way, she does not understand Zuko's reasons for abandoning her or their nation after she did everything she could to put him back in his rightful place at their father's side. And Zuko doesn't believe her, not for a second, because their father has always made him feel like the mental, emotional & physical abuse he's been put through is all because he can't measure up to Azula & he sees her as an enemy & believes that she hates him even though she doesn't. It's all just incredibly fucking sad.

And I want to be super clear, I sympathize with both siblings here a lot, but Zuko is right to challenge Azula. Ozai & Azula need to be taken out of positions of power at this point in time. Whether Zuko or Iroh or whoever "should" have the throne, it definitely shouldn't be Azula, & Zuko & Katara are doing what they have to do here.

The music, the animation, & voice acting during the final Agni Kai is beautiful. It's just an incredible scene. It's haunting, honestly. One of the most intense & emotionally charged battle scenes in any show that I've ever seen.

And of course...Zuko taunts Azula until she shoots lightning. I think it's worth noting that Azula was avoiding doing so up until now. Almost like she didn't really want to kill Zuko. And then Azula goes for Katara. This is a coldhearted & calculated move, in a way. Azula is manipulative even in the midst of her breakdown. She knows that going for Katara is the way to disarm Zuko. But I also think that it's because she didn't want to kill Zuko. Sorry Azutara besties, but Azula didn't know Katara at all on a personal level, so I think she made the quick decision in a desperate moment that if she had to kill someone, she didn't want it to be her brother & that this would be a great way to get Zuko distracted so she could burn him & win. But like...I also think this was all whizzing through her brain in chaos because she's also mid-breakdown & had to think fast.

Anyway, Zuko takes a heroic & brave dive & saves Katara. This moment just gets me every time. However, you interpret the relationship between Zuko & Katara (for me personally, I see it as a deep friendship) this is an act of love. +1000 iconic behavior points for Zuko. Pretty sure Zuzu is already taking the lead, but I can't not award him points for saving Katara's life.

I'll end this review by saying that Aang redirecting lightning against Ozai (but still not killing him) was a really amazing moment & I loved it. +1000 iconic behavior points for Aang.

the end is near. im not ready. but if i had full control over it i would want some real damage done to ALL of the main cast, obviously sasha loses an eye but dammit i am really into the anne losing an arm theory i really want it to happen just because if sasha loses an eye she would lose an aspect of wit, and marcy already lost her “heart” when she was stabbed through the chest, and anne losing an aspect of strength would be super thematic and cool. i want anne to also go into marcys mindscape to save her from darcy, while sashas fighting to protect anne from darcy which ends in him losing an eye. but honestly? i really really want them to be able to still travel back and forth from earth to amphibia, and maybe marcy and or sasha decide to stay in amphibia. anne has too many connections on earth but marcy and sasha grew and changed so much as people there and seem more fit to be on amphibia, repairing the world than back on earth at school. like they can come home to earth sometimes to hang with anne and everything but i just. theres not that much for either of them on earth (id argue sasha has the least since divorced parents and clearly a bad relationship with them and the way his only positive adult relationship is with grime) and them having to stay somewhere theyre not built for sounds shitty. like i want them to get to earth but i want them to also have options yknow? also calamity powers for all of them.

Eldarya Come-Back

Eldarya EU servers are back up. For people out of the loop, a fire destroyed both the servers and the backups of Eldarya. It's not beemoov's fault.

BR and US servers, stored somewhere else, are perfectly ok.

The FR server accounts were lost, but the story retrieved.

All the others (IT HU PL DE ES RU) have both the accounts and the story wiped out. ANE has been re-translated/Recovered, but origins is currently only playable in english.

Only the first 2 episodes of ANE have been translated so far. Errata corrige: PL, RU, ES haven't released any ANE episodes yet. DE IT and HU have the first 2 available in english. DE and HU appear to be broken.

Level 7 and episode 6 of origins (completed) are needed to access the market.

BUG REPORT: Currently there is a bug where if you change the name of your companion for the first time after evolving it you lose 100gc. please take care.

However, if you paid by credit card or paypal you have to send an email to the support (you can get the adress by clicking on "other"). In the mail you should include:

- Old/New Username (if they aren't the same) - The email address associated to the accounts - The date and the amount in €/$ of a recent transaction (max 12 months old, the most recent, the better). - Last 4 digits of the credit card you used. - I'm not sure what happens if you you used more than a credit card, I'd suggest sending one transaction per credit card and telling them about this issue.

Paypal:

Other than the event companions that you like you should probably consider...

GET:

Minaloo and Draflayel. These only comes from the purro'swap. Once the store closes, if you're unlucky, you'll never see them again.

Calunko and Bunraku. They're 2 of the japan expo rewards and with the merchandise boutique closed, they're incredibly hard to obtain, you need a physical code.

Chiromagnus, while you can get this from explorations, the scroll for it is extremely rare, and 2000 AC is stealing it.

ON THE FENCE:

The Seryphon , Poulpatata (both of them) and the chestok. These can be found on AH but require Gold coins to get in exploration. Personally I won't get them, but it's personal preference.

SKIP:

All the normal explorations companions, no matter how rare. They'll start popping up at the market soon enough

2. CLOTHES:

This is clearly completely at your own discretion, Events and ranking rewards should be considered. However there are some times never released before, like the fireflies so...

Fireflies. A beta-tester reward item, they were never made available to purchase before.

Steam girl set (Total: 1594 AC). It's the japan expo 2017 reward, 9 pieces

Maana demon and its other 3 colorations is a skin never seen in the game, previously reserved for admins. It could however be added to explorations, like other items of this kind.

Frency French was once an inside joke for ChiNoMiko, has not been made available to the public before, you can buy the skin, the hairstyle (it's a special jackson), Frency French Top, etc it's just a joke, but it's still something you won't see again, if you like it.

Depending how much you hate alchemy, you can consider some alchemy stuff.

Some rare Skins like Nan'vi, that could be hard to find in explorations

Id Purpose and why it’s my favourite final map theme (aka a long rant about how much I love Awakening)

This isn’t a groundbreaking analysis, just a long rant about all the things I love about the final map and Awakening. ****Awakening spoilers ahead****

There are seven Id themes throughout the Awakening soundtrack (not counting Id Hope from the DLC.) These themes are all Robin’s leitmotif, with the names of the Id track referring to the story/Robin’s feelings in that current situation (for example, Id Sorrow playing when Lucina decides she must kill Robin to protect Chrom.) There are speculations about why these tracks are called Id, but the most popular explanation seems to be that the Id tracks are a reference to Freudian psychology and Id, which expresses the primal urges and unconscious desires/emotions.

During the final map, Grima wounds the Shepards, and gives Robin a choice: he can either become one with Grima to spare the rest of the Shepards or he can resist and watch his comrades die. No matter what choice is made, Grima attempts to join with Robin anyway. While being taken over by Grima. Robin begins to to control, and feels himself slipping, until he hears Chrom’s voice begging him to return (now Id Return begins to play.) One by one Robin’s friends and family beg him to come back, to which Robin eventually returns to the battlefield to face Grima. Robin hears Chrom telling him that the bonds he created are stronger than the fell dragon’s might, to which Id Purpose begins.

Two major themes for Robin throughout the game has been destiny (spurred on by the mark of Grima on his hand) and belonging. Since Robin is an amnesiac and has no recollection of his time before meeting Chrom, he spends much of the game wondering what the mark means, and how he fits into the world. He has no family that he remembers, so after spending so much time protecting the Shepards and Chrom, they become his family. Unlike Chrom’s mark of the Exalt, Robin sees no greater heroic meaning behind his mark, and spends much of the game in the dark about his past. That is until the Valm/Fate of the World arc, where Robin learns that he was specifically born to be a vessel for the Fell Dragon, Grima. After wondering for so long, he discovers that his destiny in life is to become one with a dragon that would destroy Ylisse and kill his found family. (This makes sense to the player, for the paralogue of the game shows Robin killing Chrom and dooming the world to Grima’s destruction in an alternate timeline.)

Later in the game, Grima is awakened, and Robin learns that there are only two ways to defeat the dragon. If Chrom strikes the final blow with the Falchion, then Grima will be sealed for 1000 years. However, after 1000 years, Grima will return and bring the same set of problems to future generations. Since this version of Grima is linked with Robin, another option is that Robin can land the killing blow, destroying Grima for good. However, Robin will disappear with Grima. While Chrom is against sacrificing Robin, Robin begins to wonder if it is selfish to lose the chance to destroy Grima for good. This choice is ultimately given to the player, but I prefer the option where Robin sacrifices himself, so I will be talking about the game with that choice in mind.

That brings us back to the final map. Robin understands that in this final battle his purpose is to protect his friends and family by fighting against Grima, and that the mark that tied him to the dragon is a blessing, for it allows him to save the world from Grima once and for all. This culmination of Robin’s struggle with his destiny and love of his found family is what makes this final map so powerful, and the creation Id Purpose goes to represent Robin’s determination to save the world. 

Again, Robin has spent the second and third acts of the game uncertain of how to feel about his past, but here in his final moments, he is happy that he can protect his friends and family. After dealing the killing blow to Grima, Robin begins to fade away while Id Serenity plays in the background. This track is previously played when he first meets Chrom in the beginning of the game and when Robin S-supports (aka marries) another character. Like the title suggests, this is played during moments where Robin is happy/content, which makes it hit even harder as we hear it play while he fades away.

On a more meta note, theres also the fact that Awakening was supposed to be the last game in franchise before Nintendo pulled the plug on the franchise (unless it sold .) In a way, this was supposed to be the climax of the entire Fire Emblem series, and just knowing that this map was FE’s swan song makes it even more emotional. Of course, Awakening set off a Renaissance of Fire Emblem games which allowed us to continue with the franchise. In short, I love Awakening and Robin’s story. I got into the franchise through the Awakening cast, so it has an extra special place in my heart.

Anyways that turned into a long rant, tldr: go play Awakening.

What was the first fandom and/or pairing that you wrote fic for? Uh, probably Danny Phantom when I was like twelve 😂

Do you participate in any writing events or challenges throughout the year? If so, what do you like about them? Nope bc this is a small fandom and we don’t do many of those.

Do you write fics from start or finish, or jump around? I usually start at the start and then when I get stuck I’ll just skip that part, keep going, and come back to it later.  If I have an idea and I’m afraid I’ll forget it, I might also skip ahead and write it.

Do you outline before you start writing? If so, how far do you stray from that outline? I love outlining more that actually writing lmao, the longer the fic the more I outline.  I usually stick to it pretty closely, which isn’t aways good for my writing...

What is the perfect environment for you to write in? Quiet and private.  Other than that I haven’t figured out the tricks to getting myself to focus :(

If you’re really concentrating, how many words can you write in a day? Occasionally when I’m really inspired I’ll write like 1000, but more often I just write a paragraph or two.

Which part of writing do you struggle with most? Too many ideas, too little actual writing capacity.  It’s hard to focus on finishing fics bc I get too distracted by my other ideas, and I rarely write sequels bc there’s so much I haven’t gotten to share yet.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, share a song that’s been inspiring you lately. Nope, can’t write with music, I get too distracted.  

Do you prefer to write AUs, canon divergence, or canon-compliant fic? AUs!!!

Do you enjoy writing dialogue, exposition, or plot the most? Probably dialogue? Exposition is great bc I get to explain the AU, but It’s not good for the flow of the fic.  Dialogue can be really satisfying to write when you get in a groove with it.

If you could only write angst, fluff, or smut for the rest of your life, which would it be? Fluff!

Is there a trope you haven’t written yet but really want to? Oh god so many.  I have notes on tons of tropes I’d like to write... I’d like to do a college AU (and I meant to do it while I was actually in college but oops).  I posted a soulmate AU once but I’d like to do another.  Oh and I have lots of ideas for crossover AUs and I’m still deciding how to handle those.

Is there a trope you wouldn’t write if it was the last trope on earth? Honestly probably not.  I’m not huge on character death, genderbends, or reader inserts, for example, but I have ideas for fics involving all of those. 

If you were stuck on a desert island with only two characters, which would you pick? No one from gnr that’s for sure, that’d be a disaster.  How about... Percy Jackson and idk Wonder Woman?

A Hollywood producer tells you that they want to film just one of your fics. Which fic would you want it to be? Hmm out of the fics that I’ve posted... maybe Sumthin’ for Nuthin’ actually? I abandoned that poor fic but I still really like the plot.  And there’s plenty of longer, more plot-heavy fics I have outlined that would be cool to see as films.  In general I often imagine concepts visually instead of with words.

What is your most underrated fic? Saving Grace didn’t get a lot of notes and I get why – it’s kinda niche and there’s no actual romance.  But I think it’s well-written and I’m proud of it.

What fic are you most proud of? Maybe the whole cat!slash universe?  I don’t think it’s my best writing per se, but I’m still really attached to the concept and it was a pleasant surprise that other people seemed to like it too.

What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene. I’ve always been partial to the paragraph in Sweetness that ends with “Their coffee has long gone cold (and so has Duff’s spine - snakes give him the heebie-jeebies), but Slash’s enthusiasm is sweeter than the Duff’s half-eaten bowl of melted ice cream, and Duff is eating it up with a spoon.”  Just... the coffee is cold and so is Duff’s spine, Slash is sweet and so is the ice cream, and using “eating it up with a spoon” idiomatically while it’s also thematically relevant to a sentence about dessert... I really like to layer meaning when I can.

Who is the easiest/hardest character for you to write about? Why? Slash tends to be the center in most of my writing, but actually I think it’s easier to write from Duff’s pov.  Maybe bc when I’m writing sluff I can just channel my crush on Slash through Duff lmao.  Interesting tho bc when it comes to the real people, I find Slash much more relatable than Duff or the others.

What’s your favorite minor character you’ve written? Hah maybe Slash in the funeral home AU, it’s a duzzy ficlet so he’s just a side character but I got a kick out of writing his and Steven’s background antics.

What is the one fic that got away? Well, I really wish I’d finished Sumthin’ for Nuthin’ before I kinda lost interest in Motley Crue, that fic was gonna get more dramatic from there.  Would it be worth it to just post the outline?  Plus there’s a few potential longfic ideas that I’ve put a lot of love into, but I doubt they’ll ever be posted or completed considering the way I can’t seem to focus on one idea long enough to write more than a one-shot :( But hey I guess you never know.

Have you cried while writing a fic? Nope.  I do have some angsty ideas though, hopefully they’ll surface someday.

If you had to remix one of your own fics, which would it be and how would you remix it? Someday I’d like to rewrite the cat!Slash fic from the beginning, make it a real multichap or at least a proper series of vignettes.  Id also be interesting in a darker version of that AU, since there’s definitely potential for that in the concept.  But I’m pretty attached to the fluffy little universe I made, so I’d probably prefer to explore those darker themes in a different (but maybe similar) universe – I have a few ideas.

How did you come up with title for [x fic]? Most of my fics have self-explanatory titles or none at all, the only one I have much to say about is Saving Grace.  Duff needed a miracle to get out of his situation, Slash was his saving grace.  But also, Grace is the name of Duff’s oldest daughter, and Duff’s motive in the story is trying to “save” her.  Despite the double meaning in the title, I avoided referring to the child by name or as Duff’s “daughter”/explaining how they ended up together.  I wanted to maintain some of the mystery of the apocalyptic genre: characters with mysterious origins, found families, aliases, etc.  That’s definitely one of the ways that Mad Max and DOOM influenced this fic.  (Oh, also Serpentine is a dick joke via a wttj reference: “My serpentine.”  That’s it tho, the rest are pretty straightforward.)

Tell us an idea for a longfic you want to write in the future. Ok, so I have three main longfic ideas, but the easiest one to explain is an AU set in a version of the 1980s where ancient greek deities exist, Axl’s life is parallel to that of Perseus, and Slash is cursed like Medusa.   Lots of drama, lots of influence from greek theater, untrustworthy gods, unrequited feelings, dramatic irony... fuck I hope I write it someday.

starhearth: episode two

First Month of Spring, Days 5-7

With a new morning dawning it’s time to really start getting this colony underway. They’ll be needing beds, and a roof over their heads, and more food, preferably before all those plates of berries run out.

First off, Uhura is assigned a little patch of territory near the stockpile to do her trapping in. This will at least supply us with a considerable amount of dried jerky, which will keep the crew from starving if all else fails.  Then it’s time to consider our first building.

Stonehearth comes with a few pre-made building templates, but by and large you’re expected to design your own; once designed and placed in the world, your hearthlings will construct them from your stockpiled materials. I’m not exactly what you might call good at designing buildings, but fortunately hearthlings aren’t too picky about architecture and even I can manage to stick a few walls and a roof together. This first building is basically just one big room with a couple of smaller rooms attached, which is meant to eventually serve as a kind of tavern/dining hall, but more immediately will give everyone a place to sleep and eat inside until we can build some individual houses.

The finished schematic (such as it is) calls for a bit more wood than we currently have, but there are some trees in the way of where I want to put it anyway so that works out alright. A few people are sent to cut down those trees; in the meantime, Kirk studiously patrols around the camp, while McCoy crafts himself a Herbalist’s Workbench, which he’ll need to craft other things.

Once the trees are down, the building is placed in a spot close to the lake, next to a young chestnut tree. The chestnut tree isn’t strictly necessary. It just seemed nice.

Time to start building! It’s going to take rather a while, though, because Trappers, Herbalists and Footmen can’t build, so it’s just Scotty and Sulu working on it for now. And with Scotty initially busy making the doors and windows, it’s left to Sulu alone to begin laying the flooring. Unfortunately, he’s chosen to do this while drunk.

Kids! Don’t try this at home. Combining carpentry and alcohol rarely ends well.

Then he falls asleep on the spot. Oh well, that might be for the best. At least now he won’t wind up nailing his own hand to the floor.

Having finished his workbench, McCoy goes to gather some herbs and edible mushrooms, starting a makeshift garden next to the stockpile. Meanwhile, Scotty has finished building all the furniture for the tavern, which has raised him up to Level 2. With that done he can start helping Sulu build the actual structure.

The next day brings us a couple pieces of welcome news. The first is that a passing explorer has happened by and they’ve got an offer for us.

This is a stroke of luck, especially so early on. Cricket golems will haul items, meaning hearthlings have to spend less time doing it, which is especially helpful given that hearthlings kind of suck at cleaning up after themselves and tend to drop things all over the place. Also, they’re super cute. We definitely want these, and Scotty can easily crank out those window frames in time, so the offer is quickly accepted.

The other good news is our Daily Update. The Daily Update checks your town’s total net worth and your total amount of provisions, and if both are high enough, a new villager will come to stay. And today, we’ve got enough!

New villagers will have randomly generated names, appearances, stats and traits, and while you can freely change their names at any time, the only way to get new stats and traits is to save immediately beforehand and then reload until you get one you want. Which I...may have done. A few times.

In the end (I’m gonna decline to comment on exactly how long this took) we’ve got a newcomer with 4 mind, 6 body, and 3 spirit, with two traits: Animal Companion (this time, the animal is a fox) and Storm Chaser (which...I’m not actually sure what that one does, but my best guess is that it gives them a happiness boost in stormy weather).

By default in Stonehearth you’re not able to change the appearance of any hearthlings aside from your starting five. In the interests of having everyone look somewhat remotely recognizable as themselves, I employed a mod that lets you change the appearance of new villagers. The downside to this is that the town quickly wound up becoming remarkably homogeneous, but, well, that’s TOS for you.

At any rate, our new villager has the stats to be a good combat unit, and we’ll need an archer eventually, so I decided to make this one Chekov. Because...firing phasers is kind of like firing arrows...look, just go with me on this.

For the moment, however, we need more hands to build the tavern more than we need an archer, so Chekov won’t be taking up his job for a while yet. While he gets to work helping Scotty and Sulu, McCoy harvests some nearby berry bushes and makes some healing potions—more because he needs the experience than because we need healing potions, but hey, they might come in handy.

With the additional help the floor of the tavern is soon finished, and work begins on putting the walls up. But it’ll still be a while before it’s done and in the meantime, sleeping on the ground is making everyone grumpy, so Scotty’s made some extremely basic beds, which are put out near the fire. Before all the beds are even placed, Sulu and McCoy have passed out in a couple of them.

When I started shipping them: Uh, immediately, I think? I mean, I knew they were A Thing before I started watching the show and thought they seemed cute, especially when I started to get more of their story.

My thoughts:

Frankly I don’t know what I can say here that I haven’t already posted about elsewhere on this blog, but I just think they’re among the most unique couples I’ve ever seen in fandom–just fun and genuinely loving and SO SO GAY LIKE!!! There’s literally nothing bad about them 1000/10.

What makes me happy about them: Forbidden romance? Yes. Each of them proving their love and giving up everything to save the other? Yes. Lesbians? Yes. Cool animal themes? Yes. Like this ship was tailor-goddamn-made for me if I’m being honest.

What makes me sad about them: Aside from the obvious thing where they, uh, die, the one bit of canon that I prefer to just outright ignore most of the time is the one where Hurley started racing because she thought Sloane was hot. Like, nah. They are both absolute adrenaline junkies and I’m convinced that they bonded specifically because they were both into racing first. This is the hill I will die on. (And @ fandom MAKE MORE CONTENT OF THESE GALS DAMMIT THE LACK OF IT IS WHAT MAKES ME SAD.)

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Just FYI, none of this is actually bad, just a matter of taste! I have stopped reading fics because Hurley was described/portrayed as stuffy or no-nonsense before she met Sloane. Like if anything Hurley is the more chaotic one and I will never be convinced that Sloane was the one to make her walk on the wild side or whatever. I also prefer it if Sloane isn’t overly snarky and teasing, especially when she’s getting arrested? Just…eh, it’s kind of an overused trope with thief characters and I find it a little dull. ALSO HURLEY IS A TOP STOP WRITING HER AS A BOTTOM.

Things I look for in fanfic: I just love people filling in the gaps of their fascinating-but-vague implied back story and coming up with reasons for this really objectively bizarre relationship to take off and succeed against all odds. Like “sandstorm” by the merienes tranch on AO3 is the platonic ideal of the Hurloane fic i m o. But I also love AUs and things that concern their lives after the events of canon! Idk I’m not terribly picky.

My wishlist: Griffin where the fuck is my spin-off podcast where they’re vigilante dryads investigating crime in Goldcliff and eating the rich?

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: I have never seen either of them shipped with anyone except each other, and thank god, because let’s be honest, they’re a package deal. The only way I’ll accept them not being together is if they date me instead.

My happily ever after for them: I really just want them being recognized in Goldcliff as guardians and around Faerun as these, like, immortal spirits of enduring love. I want them, above all, to recognize that they’ve achieved peace and to settle into that idea after both of them were running so long, and that they don’t ever have to worry about being separated again.

Towels Equal Power

[I still need to write that Bellagio (and Vegas) got wrong and right, but one of the things the Bellagio got right is so huge that it needs its own entry.]

Longtime readers will know that one of my biggest pet peeves about going on vacation is when  a hotel rations towels. I don't necessarily mean in the bathroom -- most hotels allow you to request more and honestly I use my bathroom towels more than once even on vacay.

The type of towel rationing which is decidedly not luxurious is when each hotel guest is permitted just one beach towel or is expected to use a towel card in order to get a lone towel for the beach or pool. Giving over room number, last name and ID is more like being at the DMV than being at a tropical locale.

I first came across this at Club Med, where you are given a towel card for a single towel. I argued and got an additional one. By the end of that trip I managed to wrangle six towel cards which means if ever in prison I would surely run shit. I have long acquainted towel acquisition with prison rules. Meaning in prison the person who has the cigarettes, drugs, or extra commissary  is a boss. You want an extra honey bun, well then you owe me five when your commissary comes in. And bitch you better pay up. But being in prison doesn't remind you of a vacation, right? So any hotel that makes me feel I have to hoard towels and plan out my days of having to secure a prime chair gets a big thumbs down from me.

A single beach towel might be doable if there was another way to save a seat at the pool and beach. But because people get out there at 6am to save a coveted beach seat under a palapa and/or a pool seat under an umbrella  one needs to get up super early and place their beach towel on a seat in order to be assured of a spot for the day. But if you want a seat at both the pool and beach you need more than one towel. And that also means you have no towel to wrap around you or use to actually dry off.

Now Club Med isn't what I'd say a luxurious property so I could kind of see why they are rationing towels. (It's not an environmental thing -- plenty of plastic everywhere and unlimited bath towels.)

What ends up happening is that people will take a towel off someone's chair and return it so they get an extra towel card for the following day. And then when you are cardless you have to argue with the towel gestapo to get another.

Either way, not what I'd call a relaxing vacation.

Then more recently Club Med did a huge renovation and started charging more than double for their top-tier rooms in Turks and Caicos. We are talking to the tune of about $550 a night. They got their 4th trident which means they are supposed to be like a five-star resort. Yet the towel issues continued. Thankfully in the VIP rooms you are given two towel cards per person and they are less likely to argue with you if you want an additional towel or two.

Most other places that are considered luxury properties handle the beach towel service as an amenity that is included in your resort fee. I prefer this. They set up your chairs and umbrella at the pool and beach which means you don't have to bother yourself keeping track of towels. They put two or three on each chair for you and are happy to provide more throughout the day as needed or desired.  Most resorts i go to charge hefty amenity fees - Gurneys, the Ritz, 1 Hotel all charge them. They tend to run from $25-$40 per day and ensure you get two seats at both the pool or beach. Loews in Miami charges that same amenity fee but then fucks you over on umbrellas at the beach. You get chairs and unlimited beach towels but still need to fork over an additional $25/day for an umbrella. This irks me to no end. [For this overcharge I encourage everyone to take home their famous black and white striped beach towels to compensate.]

My favorite place in the world is the Viceroy Riviera Maya. Just 40 private villas where they indulge your every whim. While super pricey (all inclusive will run you about $1000/day) the best part aside from the personalized chef-prepped unlimited food is that there is no additioanl resort fee, your chairs are waiting for you all made up with four towels each, an umbrella at both the pool and beach. (Add to that they offer chilled hand towels every few hours, wash your sunglasses and flip flops and bring out little treats like frozen fruit and smoothies, and it is paradise!)

At my recent trip to the Bellagio in Vegas I noticed they got something very wrong: while there were hundreds, if not thousands of chairs at the five pools, they'd all be filled by 7:10am. The pool areas opened at 7am -- the elevator wouldn't even go down to the pool area until then -- and people would be running out to snag chairs. There were literally lines at hte elevator at 6:45 with people teeming to be the first in. This ruined the trip for me and others because how the hell wants to be out and about at 7am just to be assured a spot under an umbrella by the pool? (There were tons of other less prime chairs but they were simply on a concrete area with no pool, bathroom area or bar and also didn't have shade from the sun or offered umbrellas.)

But the one thing that Bellagio does right is: UNLIMITED BEACH towels. While they don't set up your seat for you (downer!) you don't even have to give your name or room number to the towel window in order to get any amount you  want. Imagine: Towel Nirvana. Clouds of warm, white, fluffy towels as far as the eye can see. You want an extra one for a pillow? No problem. Want to use one to use as a turban around your wet hair? Bingo. Want to fashion a terrycloth gown out of one and dance around the sprinkers? Go for it!  Now that is what I call vacation!

At one point seeing that I was up at an ungodly 6am to get a pool seat I asked for a whopping eight towels and set up two chairs in different areas of the pool -- one that gets sun in the morning and shade later and the other which got shade in the morning and sun in late afternoon. I bounced around between both, a sort of vacation from my vacation.

This is a long-winded way of saying very clearly that in the world of luxury vacations, towels equal power.

So imagine my surprise when on the aforementioned recent Vegas vacation, while ensconced in a terry-clad chair in a prime spot, reading Kelly Oxford's memoir I came upon this passage:

The only thing I like better than free frozen grapes delivered to me is icy cool serendipity.
