ok i'm gonna layout the events post-sunny's totem pop because i was watching it back and the details of it actually confused me a little. when i saw it live, i assumed tallulah was calling leo a cheater for hitting sunny after the totem popped, but watching back blurred that a little for me and i'm wondering if other people have any thoughts on it?? it's now unclear to me who tallulah was calling a cheater since she seems to be like firmly cheering on leo the whole time and didn't really look at sunny at all. sunny and tallulah's relationship has been in a weird spot for a while ago (and this adds a whole 'nother layer to it even tho i think from her perspective tallulah could just be supporting her sister leo who is often left out and not really thinking about sunny at all) and i could write a whole essay about what i think is going on there. but like who is tallulah calling a cheater? leo for hitting after the fight ended? sunny for breaking leo's totem? why is what leo did okay then? did she see who started it? so many unanswered questions anyway this is long and unnecessary so i'll put it under a read more, i got half way through doing this before deciding it was pointless but i figured i might as well post it anyway so everyone has the play by play and can see what i mean lmao

ok so the totem pops. sunny and leo both hit each other once immediately afterwards (still in the momentum of the fight) then sunny backs away and turn to leave. it's worth noting here that tallulah is on leo's "side" of the arena cheering. she moved basically immediately when leo enters the arena (unlike every other match where she stayed with the group in the centre/centre-left) and stays there the whole match. it could be her wanting a different angle but i'm not sure.

leo follows sunny, swinging her stick, and hits her as sunny is leaving (note: sunny is unarmed here but she switched to the bread to eat like the same second leo hits her so i don't think leo wasn't purposefully hitting her unarmed but she could tell sunny was leaving) (also note: pepito's been on the floor since before the floor ended, poor baby does not like watching the sisters fight, also got told off by guard at the beginning for opening door like pepito wanted to follow pepito's sisters in 🥺🥺)

leo then spams hits sunny back (~4 times) as she switches to a stick. ramon starts rushing forward. sunny starts hitting back (~3 times) and pops leo's totem. she then turns and leaves just as ramon comes between them. he switches to an enchanted axe briefly facing leo but quickly swaps back to stick, seeming to realize the fight's over for real now. leo starts victory dancing as sunny exits the room entirely. ramon exits quickly after (and stands to the side thereafter). cucurucho laughs and says good like the drama-loving asshole he is.

tallulah puts down her sign after sunny exits the room (she's just behind empanada here), but sunny doesn't read it since she's facing away the whole time. it's worth noting as far as i can tell (from audio and a brief frame with the maraca in it) that tallulah only moves towards the centre after the leo's totem breaks. pepito goes in towards leo. empanada comes and throws bread at sunny (it is empanada not tallulah i checked). sunny starts writing a sign

after her sign's down, tallulah then rushes into and jumps excitedly at leo and throws bread at her. she then comes out and breaks her 'CHEATER' sign (which neither sunny nor leo read) before returning back to leo. em asks if sunny's okay and sunny finally finishes her sign she started typing when she first exited. she leaves it up about 5 secs (we never see it RIP)

leo puts down a sign saying 'SLAAAAAAAY SOPORTA' and tallulah follows up also saying 'SOPORTAAA'. I'm not great at Spanish but soporta usually means like 'support' but i think (and i'm also not super familiar with mexican slang) this is also another way of saying like la queso which is drag slang for 'like it or not' (kinda idk how to translate it)?? i'm not sure tho. if someone knows better please tell me.

anyway so that's that. all the other eggs basically just watch the aftermath or aren't paying attention. ramon's intereference and pepito cheering for both but congratulating leo on her win after and empanada supporting sunny after all make sense to me as reactions. but tallulah confuses me a bit. it seems like she is pretty supporting leo during the fight and after. she doesn't act like she thinks leo did something BM afterwards (which i think she'd at least admonish her if she did even if she was still excited leo won). neither sunny nor leo sees the cheater sign and she breaks it fairly quickly. did she regret it? did she think sunny got to read it? did she not want leo to see it? it's such a small thing but that cheater sign baffles me.

there are so many intricacies to the sunny's relationships with tallulah and leo that i think were all made worse by this fight lmao. the little girl drama i live for it @.@ can't wait for qsmp to return so i can have more to do than analyze a 3 min fight for 2 hours

So, I’m trapped in this cycle of watching Velma video essays because for the life of me I cannot figure out how it went nearly as wrong as it did in the end because as a finished product the show makes absolutely no sense.

And it feels a little like…. Idk “we watched those weird early 2000s cartoons but we all grew up in LA and went to private school and don’t know how to write broke rundown middle of nowhere towns” which is creating a feeling of “they’re poor but definitely not poor” which creates a massive tonal and cultural schism.

The logic of the universe doesn’t make sense. And I’m not sure why save a potential skill issue? Editorial issue? Management issue? What caused this?

so the authors of wt included a bunch of scans

most of them are richey’s essays and letters to friends when he was in uni or even younger

but they include some of his personal writings from when he was in hospital

(ironic considering one of their claims is that richey didn’t want the jfpl lyrics used)

and idk i didn’t really read through them because it feels bad and weird since richey clearly intended the jfpl journal to be used in some way (there’s a note in the front about which songs are better, it’s curated with art and collages and things, it was handed off deliberately to the band as a present, they’d already demo’ed at least 2 songs that are in the binder before it was handed off) and he most definitely did not intend for his personal journals to be published

but i read through them just now and like....

truly wild for the authors of this book to be claiming richey was like a heroic genius with incredible foresight and powers to long-term plan a complex disappearance who was deliberately manipulating how people saw him, and then publishing these pieces of writing which (especially alongside the unedited JFPL ephemera + other summaries in the book of non-scanned pages) are clearly a person absolutely flailing in terms of belief in anything and completely overwhelmed with the overstimulation of the world but obviously obsessed with it all at the same time.

like one of the papers scanned he’s written a couple fragments from the myth of sisyphus, but only the parts about why a suicidal person commits suicide and its relation to absurdity, but not the parts about why revolting against death upholds the absurd and that the absurd man lives by accepting not understanding anything but remaining curious. in fact he wrote an excerpt from the middle of a paragraph where camus says that “suicide is a repudiation [of the idea of the absurd keeping one alive]” and then Richey writes “No? Yes?” next to it.

because debating camus on suicide while struggling with religious conflict (a la doors closing slowly/all is vanity) and addiction to multiple things and anxiety caused by the speed of the world (a la peeled apples/me & stephen hawing) and self hate and severe depression and doubt in like everything and like the exact opposite of ego death and all that shit is just such a good idea

i feel so bad for richey reading all these things because he was clearly so failed by the treatment he received and the people who were supposed to help him but nicky has said by the end he was so tangled up he wasn’t able to communicate to his friends what he needed or what he was thinking and stuff and it’s mostly just really sad and depressing that this book takes his obviously painful mental struggle (which has been talked about over and over in books on the band anyway) and transforms it into this weird heroic intellectual power and esoteric knowledge or whatever and this idea that richey just really wanted to become a rock n’ roll myth and not that he was just suffering and didn’t get the right help

someone please help me. why do I have such an unreasonable attachment to tsumugi shirogane. Please. She's not even that good of a character! She only gets a personality within the last like 2 hours of the game, & she only exists to move the plot along, but for some reason that was enough to shoot her up to #1 on my favourite V3 characters list. Like this is the same game with characters like Kokichi, Kaito, Maki, Shuichi, & Kaede, but nooooo. The fucking sayaka-lookin ass cosplayer who makes JJBA references is somehow my favourite. Make it make sense!

It's probs just for the same reasons that Haru's my favourite P5 character, which is....

well, shit. I actually don't have a real reason for why Haru's my fav. I only like her cuz I feel bad for how the narrative treats her. I guess the same then applies to Tsumugi??? idk man id be so fucked if someone asked me to explain why tsumugi's my fav V3 character I'd literally have no answer the whole time I'd just be going "buuuuhhhhhhhhhhahaha la mayo funny blue hair girl go brrrrrrrrr"

(inspired by me writing a whole essay in response to someone on why I like V3's ending. Tsumugi gets 1 out of the 3 sections dedicated to her so I've been having real bad brainrot about her lately. helpppppp i love her so much she's such a good commentary on entitled fans & franchise fatigue & bright-eyed excited fans who get to do official work for a franchise they love, only to eventually turn their favourite stories into just another corporate product with no soul behind it. I love her. She killed a bunch of teenagers but I can fix her. She has a incest kink but hey she's still best girl. She's boring & personality-less for 99% of the game but hey look! She made a funny JoJo's reference!!! All is forgiven!!!!! All is well!!!!!!! Al hail smoothie shinigami!!!!!!!!!)

List the first lines of your last 20 stories. See if there are any patterns and choose your favourite opening line!

Tagged by the inimitable @cicaklah ! It’s an interesting exercise; i realise i definitely don’t invest in one single knockout opening line, and if there are any patterns it would be that my openers fill the function of “in this essay i will” - they set up that this is a concluded story with an ending, told by someone who knows the ending. Could be interesting to get away from that and try a different narrative structure, but at the same time that sounds like so much work?

“It started with emails, and he just never expected anything so mundane.” (Fool me twice) A thematically appropriate mundane opener?

“The first time you speak to him alone, when it’s not an audition and there’s no one watching, he jumps.” (The physics of mass and velocity) idk why I did the open and close to this fic in 2nd person but I just think it works, ok. References a much referenced encounter, but makes it intimate again? So different from all the others that it might actually be my favourite.

“In 1984 he won the Valley’s most famous karate match on a fluke – or did he?” (Daniel LaRusso, karate, and the soul of the San Fernando Valley) Sounds like clickbait, was supposed to sound like clickbait – possibly I put more thought into this first line because my POV journalist would also have put more thought into it?

“Waking up with Daniel LaRusso in his bed is really fucking weird.” (Like a coastal shelf) Sets the scene, gets to the point but otherwise meh. Although good echo of previous story’s opening line, which is also Johnny waking up in his own bed and being surprised by the person he finds there.

“There’s an old Asian guy standing at the end of his bed when Johnny wakes up, frowning at him like he’s a disappointment to him, personally.” (Anabasis) A little bit funny and better than the above. Also sets up a good joke in the next line.

“It was weirdly easy to convince LaRusso sneaking into the All Valley Sports Arena at night was a good idea, and maybe that should have tipped him off.” (In the arena) I like the warning of impending something, and the implication that these are people who do not openly discuss things that it might be a good idea to discuss.

“Amanda opens the front door to hear yelling coming from the kitchen.” (Sometimes there is a luxurious amount of time (before anything bad happens)) I was proud of this fic and the writing but this is a weak first line. I knew it at the time but it was just too much like hard work to think of a better one.

“Anthony LaRusso pushes open the door to the guest room to take a fancy white towel he’s not supposed to touch, and trips over a pair of boots.” (The morning after the night before) Another opening door? Move on already. But I like the rhythm of it and Johnny’s boots disrupting life in the LaRusso house just as Johnny disrupts life for LaRusso pere.

“If he’d known Amanda wasn’t going to come, Daniel would never have suggested to Johnny that they go in the first place.” (High School Reunion, class of '85) A pattern is starting to occur to me: I use the tags, summary and author’s note as my marketing material (ugh), so I’m not really asking the first line to do much work. These are all REALLY weak out of context, but does that matter when people are reading them IN context? If I want to half-ass my fic, who’s gonna stop me, the Fanfic Effort Police?

“Rosalind became the Countess de Stael when she was nineteen years old, and even then she knew she’d been lucky.” (the other half of his life) Functional! But the tags and the excerpt I used for the summary were great.

“It was highly gratifying to be approached by not one, not two, but three beautiful women together who apparently just adored his music.” (La belle au bois dormant) It works, nice rhetorical flourish that suits the character, ‘apparently’ is working hard there.

“The path down from the mountains was steep and the stones slid treacherously underfoot, and it took all Jaskier’s concentration to get down without falling.” (A history of dragons in popular culture) Workmanlike, should have avoided repeating ‘down’; there must be 10000 Witcher fics out there that open in a similar way. Again, the excerpt I chose for the summary was much stronger. And that’s why I chose it.

“In hindsight, there had been clues. One of them was in the British Museum, in the Mesopotamia room.” (is that your flaming sword (or are you just pleased to see me)) All the way back to Good Omens already! Apparently I like the ‘in hindsight’ construction for my first lines, I’ve used it since even if not in so many words. For a certain length of story with a certain degree of conclusion to be had, it works. Sets up the let me tell you a story which is complete vibe.

“After She’d done her first six days of work and decided that it was all Good, the Almighty wasn’t given much to editorialising.” (a design for life) C’mon, I’m mildly amusing. Sensible chuckle-worthy. Good imitation of the Gaiman & Pratchett writing style.

“For many years, the King’s Cross area of London was known for its grim and noisy railway station and the drug addicts and sex workers who frequented the streets around it, which also boasted a handful of insalubrious nightclubs and a cinema known as the Sodom Odeon.” (the technology is neutral) I was writing about the Scala cinema and Kings Cross as much as Crowley and Aziraphale, and the opening line does reflect that.

“On the Tuesday after the apocalypse wasn’t, they went to the theatre.” (the first week of the rest of their lives) I like the contrast of the very human concepts of Tuesday and theatre with the huge religious concept of apocalypse.

“It wasn’t at all what he was expecting Aziraphale to say over the second bottle of champagne after their truly spectacular lunch at the Ritz.” (the sublime physical manifestation of divine love) Barely makes sense when taken alone! Obviously first lines are followed by second and third lines so that’s ok.

“A successful thief knows how to leave the past behind, and Peter Nureyev is not just successful, he’s exceptional.” (theories of (in)secure attachment) Look at that, a first line that does stand alone! I guess I can do it when I want to.

“There is no Resistance any more.” (scenes from a revolution) ah, Star Wars of my heart, back when we still thought they knew Finn was the main character.

Sleep like unconsciousness, dreams that are closer to hallucination. That’s what he chiefly remembers from that time as they escape. (the fall of rome) yes this is two lines but they fitted on one line. I like the backwards construction of somebody very tired, the detail before the context.

Anon anon anon you do NOT know how happy you just made me. I’ve been working on this for MONTHS, ive even gone so far as to write an outline. I’ve NEVER done that before, even with my 100k word fic. This au is my BABY. My CHILD. I‘ve done SO much worldbuilding and you bet your ass I’m working on more.

I’m super proud of my crews sjsjs even though some of them are so so short but I don’t have to introduce ever sailor on the ship, so I don’t gotta worry too much lol.

As for the namings, The Blade and Nightmare are pretty obvious, but Fate Fatale was named after Femme fatales, bc Y’know, puffy is a woman and she will kill you, but the first part was change to Fate because it is INEVITABLE that she kills ya, or so they say. Ossium was named after Quackity’s horse (it means bone in Latin). I may or may not change this one, but I like the idea of ppl calling the Bone Ship, and Quackity calling it his Ivory Steed or smth. I would t called it las Nevadas, but that’s still a country here lol.

the plot doesn’t actually line up with cannon chronologically, there is no L’manburg ship that Wilbur and Tommy are on and Wilbur blows up (though his backstory does include that he was the captain of the Symphony before his crew mutinied. I’m rlly proud of that name), there is no ‘Tubbo being the captain’ or whatever, there aren’t even any discs (they weren’t invented until 1880 or smth, and this is set in a vague 1700s time). So, it’s a pretty organic plot line. But! I do keep somethings in! Like exile, for one. It’s not actually exile, but it’s got the ‘Dream manipulating Tommy‘ part in it!

Speaking of Dream!!! There’s magic!! There’s magic in here and my writing teacher helped me write the entire magic system!!! I’m bit gonna put all of it down bc that is LONG and also some of it is spoily, but basically there’s 3 types of magic: Nether, End, and idk Earth magic? Still working on the name of that one. Anyways, the Nether and End are basically the afterlifes, but because of demons there can be travel between. It’s basically unheard of for an Earth person to go through to the other side (or a dead person to come back 👀👀) , but there’s legends. Nether demons are curious and and come over fairly often, therefore there’s more known about the nether.

Each person can be aligned with one of the three magics (more than one will kill you, end of story) and learn them— Earth being the easiest, as it is easily gained naturally (sirens, saytrs, druids) and easily learned. nether is the second easiest, with Nether demons being almost common in some places, and End being the hardest and most dangerous to learn (but the most beneficial!)

If you havent guessed yet, Ranboo is an End demon, and Bad is a nether demon. Tubbo, Puffy, and Schlatt are all saytrs, Sam is a siren, Hannah is a druid. Phil studies End magic, and thats how he gets his wings!! Elytra!!

Okay, since this is getting as long as some essays, I’ll just leave with a few fun facts:

in the Antarctic Empire, it’s an old custom to grow one’s hair out of theyre keeping an important oath, to show their commitment. Their hair is also very commonly a bright red!!

El Rapids, a small island nearby to the badlands, was annexed by Las Nevadas

people from L’Manburg are called L’men. Or British. Lots of people don’t know why they’re called British, but there’s stories about L’Manburg once being a colony of a small country called Britain, but when L’Manburg grew to be bigger than the country, it just kinda... ate it. Like agar.io

despite Britain once existing, the landform is nothing like our Earth’s

All demons have an energy source in the center of their chest that produces their magic. A Nether demons is called their Star, and an End demon’s is called their Pearl!

Pippa and Theo’s Relationship in “The Goldfinch”

(Or: Why Theo believes he’s in love with Pippa when he’s not)

I really enjoyed writing my last shitshow of an essay so now here’s another overly long essay on Theo and His Issues in “The Goldfinch”.

It’s 3,000 words so...good luck!

Pippa and Theo have a close bond, there’s no doubt about that, however, Theo misconstrues this bond in his head. He ends up perceiving the bond he shares with Pippa, on his end at least, for that of romantic love. Interestingly enough, this is not the case – Theo is not in love with Pippa, despite his belief, and Pippa herself understands this too.

One reason as to why Theo may be mistaking their close relationship (even though it’s never that close really) for romantic love is because of the similarities in each of their childhoods. There are many parallels that can be drawn between each of their childhoods, ranging from the death of a parent or guardian to their shared traumatic experience of the museum bombing.

Pippa’s mother, like Theo’s, is dead, as well as her legal guardian Welty (her uncle), who died in the museum bombing - Already they have some common ground through this which is the only established knowledge they have of each other on their first interaction in Hobie’s flat.

Pippa also stays with an adult (Hobie) who genuinely tries his best to take care of her until, right when things start looking up, another, estranged family member shows up to take her away from New York (Her Aunt Margaret who subsequently takes Pippa to Texas, then sending her to the school in Switzerland for “troubled girls”). This reflects the way that Theo was taken away from the Barbours by his father and Xandra to go and live in Las Vegas.

They are both also physically and/or emotionally abused and scarred from this event:

Theo, through his dad (and Xandra) who neglected him and also physically abused him.

Pippa through her Aunt emotionally manipulating her to make her stay at Institut Mont-Haefeli, and the school themselves for not having her best interests at heart.

In the film, Pippa states whilst at a restaurant after seeing a Glen Gould documentary, that “Welty was only with me that day because I was making him take me to an audition”, depicting her guilt – still as an adult – over the death of her uncle.

Theo makes it clear many times throughout the novel and the film how he feels it was his fault his mother died. (If you want an example check the excerpt above.)

How did they deal with it? Why is this significant in understanding their relationship?

Pippa’s grief manifested itself through her physical injuries which had lifelong lasting effects. Her injuries were extremely severe, reflecting the severity of her grief and guilt. (Hobie in Chapter 4 – Morphine Lollypop: “She’s had a bad crack on the head, a skull fracture, to tell you the truth she was in a coma for a while and her left leg was broken in so many pieces she came near to losing it. ‘Marbles in a sock,’ ” he said, with a mirthless laugh. “That’s what the doctor said when he looked at the x-ray. Twelve breaks. Five surgeries. ”)

Contrastingly, Theo was not as physically affected and internalised everything he felt. This illustrates itself through his lack of eating and sleeping due to his dreams that were plagued with nightmares of the day and his loss of his mother (firstly at the Barbours and also depicted in Vegas) and eventual demise into alcoholism and drug addiction (Vegas + the rest of his life dude’s fuckin popping pills – or crushing the pills then snorting them, I guess).

How Pippa and Theo’s grief manifested itself is significant as it foreshadows the later scenes in the narrative and how they each cope once they’re adults and should no longer be grieving. (I say should no longer be grieving as it’s clear that Theo only really lets go of his grief and guilt once his mother visits him in his dream in Amsterdam after the murder - in the book anyway.) By physically showing her grief to the world – by choice or not – Pippa illustrates a healthier way to deal with grief and negative feelings – getting it out there and receiving help. This also allows us to understand, whilst Pippa also never fully recovers too – See: her crying in the restaurant over the Glen Gould documentary - that she was able to deal with it significantly better than Theo did. She even manages to have a somewhat normal and healthy lifestyle as an adult. As we’ve already discussed, Theo’s grief internalised itself as depicted through his physical injuries/symptoms, or lack thereof. Theo chose, though whether he solely can be fully to blame for this, to internalise his grief and guilt through taking drugs and drinking alcohol. (I personally believe he isn’t fully to blame for ending up addicted to drugs because anybody who cared or was supposed to care about him offered him some form of drug or medication and said it would solve his problems, See: Mrs Barbour – sleeping pills, Xandra and Larry – pills for the plane, Boris – literally any drug they did together over the course of the novel.)

Mini Conclusion (for this part): The ways grief was expressed and dealt/not dealt with by Pippa and Theo explains why they behave the way they do, e.g: Theo internalises everything and never deals with anything fully or properly, Pippa on the other hand is better at reacting to things like an actual person as she was able to deal with her grief and guilt.

Why does Theo believe he is in love with Pippa?

I believe that there are four (4) main reasons as to why Theo mistakes his feelings towards Pippa as romantic love.

1. Pippa is the only remaining link Theo has, bar The Goldfinch, to his mother and before the bombing. He desperately wants to return to before the bombing happened - before his mother was killed. Theo met Pippa only moments before the bombing happened which irrevocably links her to Theo’s “Before: When life was perfect and beautiful” view of his life. This is explored, albeit briefly, in the following excerpts:

With Pippa being depicted in the same way as Theo’s mother, we get the sense that Theo associates her, unconsciously, with his mother, and, consequentially, sees her as a link to his mother, thus feeling no romantic love towards her in anyway.

An example of parallels between Audrey and Pippa is through how both of them had to go and live with an Aunt, with whom they did not have an enjoyable time with, in the South.

Chapter 4 - Morphine Lollypop: Theo was thinking about “my mother after her parents died and she had to go live with her aunt Bess, + the mention of horses in this excerpt and how "the horses [were] sold”.

2. Theo also links Pippa with helping lessen his grief.

E.g: Soon after he first visits Hobie and Pippa, his appetite starts to return,

Theo relates Pippa to easing his feelings of anxiety:

With Pippa helping Theo ease his grief, whether realised or not, she becomes a caring figure for him, this could relate to a motherly sense of caring – which the novel could suggest so with my previous point, but hey, maybe I’m grasping at straws, idk.

3. Theo’s personality is obsessive and all-consuming which is depicted through literally any relationship he has had with anything and anyone for any considerable amount of time within the novel.

This is depicted through the obsessive amounts he is able to recount about people and the minute detail in which he does so.

It can also be shown through the act of the years’ worth of letters he wrote to his mother after she died, as well as his relationship with The Goldfinch (obsessed with keeping it as it had a link to his mother and his heart etc).

4. (Again, maybe I’m grasping at straws here) He could be mistaking his love for Pippa as romantic as a result of compulsory heterosexuality (Once again, I’m using compulsory heterosexuality in this case as an LGBTQ+ individual feeling that they have to have romantic feelings/relations to people of the opposite gender/sex, and subconsciously forcing themselves to do so - due to the heteronormative society we live in). This can be found within his romantic relationships with women never fulfilling him and his constant depiction of them as cold (See: Kitsey quotes earlier in essay compared to the way he describes Boris in general) + We all know this motherfucker is queer af, if you don’t believe me check my essay out ;)

In conclusion, I feel like Pippa is able to realise that she is not in love with Theo/differentiate the love they have between them from that of romantic love as she is more aware of her issues and has dealt with them more than Theo has. Pippa managed to remove herself completely from a situation that was causing her pain (New York) and is able to see more clearly from doing so, whereas Theo didn’t. Theo was unable to remove himself mentally or physically and is stuck in the perpetual grief he feels for his mother’s death. The only time we get some sense of closure and complete removal of grief from Theo is after Amsterdam. (In the book this is after the dream he has where he can finally face his mother, and in the film, this is once Boris tells him that “[his] bird is back in the world”). Due to Theo being unable to fully receive any sort of ability to even attempt solving his problems, his judgment is clouded and he believes he is in love with Pippa.

Just watched 13 Reasons Why S4

Ended up making a full blown commentary per episode because this is finally the last season and I’ve been enjoying this mess since S1. I even forgot that it was released until a friend brought it up to me. So in short,

Ep1

i know i’m mostly a star wars killjoy on tumblr dot com lately but allow me to SCREAM about my latest nemesis, a book called “American Dirt”:

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy―two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Forced to flee, Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia―trains that make their way north toward the United States, which is the only place Javier’s reach doesn’t extend. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?

Written by one Jeanine Cummins, who has Puerto Rican ancestry but grew up in the MD suburbs (as I did, tbf) and in 2015 considered herself white (”I am white...in every practical way, my family is mostly white.” [cw for sexual assault and murder at the link]), everything I read about this book has begun to drive me to madness.

Recommended by the Mary Sue book club (the source of the above summary), it has since been retracted bc a) its sucks and b) THEY DIDN’T READ IT BEFORE PUTTING IT ON THE BOOK CLUB LIST (”I try to read most, if not all, of the books I recommend for the Book Club because I truly do love reading, and I want to make sure that if I suggest someone grab something, it’s something I can say I liked. When I was looking up two books to fill out the list, one of them was American Dirt. I saw that it had received a lot of positive press from Stephen King, Rumaan Alam, Don Winslow, Sandra Cisneros, and other literary news outlets including Oprah’s Book Club. It seemed like the type of literary fiction that’s always good for a book club read. I was mistaken.“)

Myriam Gurba, at Tropics of Meta, describes being asked to review it for a feminist magazine, and then being told her review was too negative to publish. It included gems such as:

Cummins bombards with clichés from the get-go. Chapter One starts with assassins opening fire on a quinceañera, a fifteenth birthday party, a scene one can easily imagine President Donald Trump breathlessly conjuring at a Midwestern rally, and while Cummins’ executioners are certainly animated, their humanity remains shallow. By categorizing these characters as “the modern bogeymen of urban Mexico,” she flattens them. By invoking monsters with English names and European lineages, Cummins reveals the color of her intended audience: white. Mexicans don’t fear the bogeyman. We fear his very distant cousin, el cucuy.

[...]

With their family annihilated by narcotraffickers, mother and son embark on a refugees’ journey. They head north, or, as Cummins’ often writes, to “el norte,” and italicized Spanish words like carajo, mijo, and amigo litter the prose, yielding the same effect as store-bought taco seasoning.

[...] Lydia’s husband, a journalist, describes her as one of the “smartest” women he’s ever known. Nonetheless, she behaves in gallingly naïve and stupid ways. Despite being an intellectually engaged woman, and the wife of a reporter whose beat is narcotrafficking, Lydia experiences shock after shock when confronted with the realities of México, realities that would not shock a Mexican.

It shocks Lydia to learn that the mysterious and wealthy patron who frequents her bookstore flanked by “[thuggish]” bodyguards is the capo of the local drug cartel! It shocks Lydia to learn that some central Americans migrate to the United States by foot! It shocks Lydia to learn that men rape female migrants en route to the United States! It shocks Lydia to learn that Mexico City has an ice-skating rink! (This “surprise” gave me a good chuckle: I learned to ice skate in México.) That Lydia is so shocked by her own country’s day-to-day realities, realities that I’m intimate with as a Chicana living en el norte, gives the impression that Lydia might not be…a credible Mexican. In fact, she perceives her own country through the eyes of a pearl-clutching American tourist.

Parul Sehgal, at the NYT, digs into the fact that while the motives of this book may be unimpeachable (tho: are they??), the writing itself is...perhaps less so:

I found myself flinching as I read, not from the perils the characters face, but from the mauling the English language receives. Lydia’s expression “is one Luca has never seen before, and he fears it might be permanent. It’s as if seven fishermen have cast their hooks into her from different directions and they’re all pulling at once. One from the eyebrow, one from the lip, another at the nose, one from the cheek.” Yes, of course. That expression.

Sehgal also highlights my favorite line I’ve heard about in this book: “when Lydia finds she is unable to pray, ‘she believes it’s a divine kindness. Like a government furlough, God has deferred her nonessential agencies.’” The Raised in the DMV Suburbs just JUMPED OUT, didn’t it, Jeanine? But like legit, why on earth would a Mexican bookstore lady’s frame of reference ever be A GOVERNMENT FURLOUGH and NONESSENTIAL AGENCIES. followers, i just about died.

David J. Schmidt, at The Blue Nib, calls out other inaccuracies and stereotypes:

It is worth dwelling on the character of Javier for a moment. A “drinking game” could be created based on all the Latin American stereotypes he personifies. Javier is dapper, yet dangerous. He is charming, yet mysterious. He wears a white guayabera, a shirt the author describes as “more suitable for Sunday Mass than a regular workday.” (Untrue—this is a casual garment, more suitable for a love affair in a Fabio-bedecked romance novel.)

This quintessential “Latin lover” shows up at Lydia’s bookstore and speaks to her in a tone significantly different from the other characters of American Dirt. I must emphasise, Javier’s dialogue does not reflect the normal speech patterns of Mexico, but perfectly reflects U.S. stereotypes. The only way to properly read Javier’s lines is through the most gross of caricatures.

One should imagine the husky voice of Antonio Banderas, speaking at his most sensual and Spanishy. Any character he has played in English will do, although it is clear that Javier was ideally written for the voice of Puss in Boots. When Lydia asks if Javier reads English, the dapper narco responds:

“I try, yes […] My English isn’t fluent, but it’s close. And this story is so delicate.”

The cultural inaccuracies of American Dirt run deep, right down to the language. Throughout her book, Cummins shows confusion regarding the grammatical genders in Spanish. Most notably, she baptises the drug kingpin Javier with the nickname La Lechuza. It is difficult to imagine a macho, womanizing capo using a feminine-gendered noun as his moniker. Would a hardened mafia boss call himself “The Princess of Compton” or “The Belle of Belfast”?

Cummins got a seven figure advance for this. A SEVEN FIGURE ADVANCE. She “wished someone slightly browner than me would write it,” but she did it, and her team is throwing around the fact that her husband’s previously undocumented status as some sort of justification without mentioning that he’s white & Irish.

Also, there’s this news:

Imperative Entertainment, the production banner behind the Clint Eastwood hit The Mule, has acquired the rights to American Dirt, the Mexican migrant drama novel by Jeanine Cummins.

Charles Leavitt, the scribe who penned the Leonardo DiCaprio drama Blood Diamond, has been tapped to write the adaptation, which will be produced by Imperative’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas.

Charles Leavitt is a white guy who, most recently, wrote the Warcraft movie. So, that’s going to end well.

I’ll leave you with this other gem from Gurba (from her essay about it, “Pendeja, You Ain’t Steinbeck “):

Me, says I will be on hiatus and probs won’t post anything cus exams and essays

Also me: procrastinating very hard

Don't mind me just salty about the new episode and what not...also I don’t want to finish my essay.

Anyway since Chat Blanc was basically fanservice that served no significant purpose to the plot of the show other than "what if" scenarios. I've decided to share some AUs to put some good wholesome content back into the fandom.

Also I need to write these things down before I forget....

Previous Holder is now your Babysistter AU

(I don’t have an actual name for it lmao suggestions?)

I’ve had this one in head for a couple of months now. The premise of this AU is the miraculous doesn't just come with the Kwami but a ghost/apparition of the previous holder. Unlike the kwami's they aren't what makes the suit or have any magical abilities. Rather they are just glorified babysitters, looking after and guiding the new holder the best they can. Some are some magical rules with them though:

Only the miraculous holder and thier Kwami can see them, when they are still in their civilian forms.

They don’t disappear when the holder transform.

When other miraculous holders are transformed they can see other holder’s apparition, but when they undo the transformation they can no longer see them.

The holders and kwamis can touch them as if they were real, but they phase through everything and everyone else.

I liked the idea of the holders prior to Marinette and Adrien being a pirate and a sailor who fell madly in love. They unfortunately died together and never had kids so when they came back as “mentors” for two lovesick teens they adopt them so quickly.

Adrien gets Captain Noir, the most ferocious and seductive pirate of the seven seas! And she absolutely adores Adrien and quickly assumes a motherly role in his life. The captain doesn’t like that he is alone in the mansion and gives every second of her attention to him. She calls him her "big kitten" and tries to ruin Gabriel's day every second she can. She also despises Nathalie but tolerates Gorilla.

Marinette gets Commander Bug, a stoic and ever so suave solider of his majesty's Royal Navy. He is very chill and helps Marinette to calm down when she starts acting up. Since he is a high ranking soldier, he often assists Marinette in creating strategies to defeat villains in both her hero and civilian life. Tbh he is a very reliable guy and very sweet.

Honestly the two of them basically become parents to the two lovesick teens... and I imagine the story would literally be them ready to throw hands with Gabriel and Lila. Commander bug though ever so serious, meets Lila and immediately takes on the Captain Noir’s more... vulgar traits.

Commander Bug: Hey Marinette *nudges her* Dead men tell no tales. 😎 *makes obscene gesture towards Lila*

Marinette: FOR THE LAST TIME IM NOT MURDERING LILA

Tikki: no wait maybe he has a point

Captain Noir: Ye really need to scupper that deadbeat father of yours off the side of this building. Hey Plagg, do ye think I can take custody of Adrien??

Adrien: I’m not throwing my father off the building!! He can be nice!!

Captain Noir: Oh no ye have Stockholm syndrome... maybe I can cure it with some rum?? That always helped the new sailors who were home sick! 😱

Adrien: oh my god I’m only fourteen 😦

Plagg: *laughing hysterically* at least you can drink your woes away!!! 😂🤣

And yes they both like the Couffaines mainly because they live on a boat.

The Mythical Miraculous AU:

I wrote and planned this one before it was revealed there are multiple miraculous boxes. So in this universe let’s just say that the events of feast never happened. Prior to the “episode” Fu relinquishes guardianship and loses his memories. Let’s say there is no sentimonster that caused the downfall of the monks but rather Fu causing the temple to burn down another way. How? Maybe he left a torch unsupervised and burned the place down. Why? Idk that’s just how it’s happening now.

Anyway this AU stemmed from doing so many OC drawing requests in January. And I created seven miraculous OC's whose kwamis/concept are based on the seven virtues. They are also all based on mythical creatures.

In the story I imagined that Marinette is 17 and was giving guardianship over the miracle box some time ago. One day while messing around with it, she discovers that underneath the ying and yang centre piece there was cyclinder compartment that contained a parchment. Unrolling it had printed on it six locations along with the name of the miraculous associated.

Tikki informs her of the seven miraculous that were created as backups if the the miracle box or miraculous’ were ever stolen, lost, destroyed etc. Basically the last resort. Thus they needed to be kept out of the miracle box and in the world and always ready to defend. Hence they were given to families across Europe/Asia who promised their loyalties to the miraculous cause.

Marinette decides since it’s summer break and she isn’t busy, to find each of them and get them to help in the fight against Hawkmoth. Tikki just rolls with it.

In no particular order these are the mythical miraculous and their holders:

London, UK ~ The Unicorn and Pegasus Miraculous of Kindness and Humility: They are currently owned by 12 year old British Twins, Iris and Ivy. They come from a rich family and only recently acquired the miraculous from their father and uncle. Ivy is all about sports and is extremely athletic, Iris prefers to read and paint. Apollo is Ivy’s kwami and he is a white unicorn, and Artemis is Iris’ kwami and is a black pegasus. The miraculous are anklets.

Sovana - Tuscany, Italy ~ The Ogre Miraculous of Charity: Currently owned by Raphael, a 21 year old Italian guy studying Archaeology. He lives out in the Italian countryside with his parents and many siblings, he has a big family who owns a huge block of farmland. He is super kind and very charitable and received his miraculous from his Nonna. Orc is Raphael’s kwami and he is a selfish little bastard but he is huggable. The miraculous is a belt buckle.

Nice, Paris ~ The Pooka Miraculous of Diligence: Currently owned by Colette, a 25 year old French girl who is busy teaching six year olds, she doesn’t have any family as she was orphaned as an infant. She has always had her miraculous as she was left at the orphanage with it. She was unfortunately never adopted out, but she is extremely motivated individual with big dreams. Cinna is Colette’s kwami, she is quite lazy and often called Cinna-bun. The miraculous is a hair clip.

Kazan, Russia ~ The Phoenix Miraculous of Chastity/Abstinence: Currently owned by Orion, a flamboyant and arrogant 30 year old. He is extremely beautiful and a very proud man, and most would think he is a bit of a f*ckboi but nope. He is just saving himself for the right person. His father gifted him the miraculous when he was 15. Newborn is Orion’s kwami, and she is little b*tch and very stuck up. The miraculous is an armband.

Nazareth, Israel ~ The Griffin Miraculous of Patience: Currently owned by Nevaeh, a 16 year old revolutionist and active feminist. She has big ideas and big dreams that she hopes with enough dedication and patience she can achieve. Unlike the others, she received the miraculous from her dying neighbour, who was an old man in his nineties who had no children. Nevaeh may not be an intended holder but she is a brilliant one! Constance is Navaeh’s kwami, she is extremely wise and a soft speaker. The miraculous is a thumb ring.

Seoul, Korea ~ The Sea Serpent Miraculous of Temperance: Currently owned by 19 year old aspiring pop singer Levi. Levi is extremely shy and laid back, he tends to be soft-spoken and polite.Often he dreams of being an Idol but his shy personality isn’t doing him any favours. His older brother was originally the miraculous holder but instead of accepting any potential responsibility he dumped it onto him. It was originally gifted to his brother by their mother. Sai is Levi’s kwami, he is extremely skittish and is just riddled with anxiety over the belief of the world ending. He is a bit of a conspiracy theorist. The miraculous is a fin pendant necklace.

Of course Marinette in three months convinces them all to go to Paris and stay there until the defeat of Hawkmoth.

During her travels and time with them, she unravels the mysterious of these seven miraculous and their history. What are their abilities? Why do they specifically correlate with the seven virtues? How powerful are they?

Ivy and Iris stemming from a rich family, rent out a lovely penthouse for the seven of them in Paris. Colette decides to be the legal guardian of the minors since she actually is French. Orion decides he is gonna be a dick. The rest are there for a good time and to kick a buterrfly's butt. And thus ensue chaos, pranks, romance and a whole lotta arguing.

I can only imagine all the kwami’s and Marinette sitting, drinking green tea while watching these seven holders become absolute hooligans.

I already drew up concept art of them but they are not good sketches so yeah maybe I will show you guys another time.

Idk why I think this but I just figured everyone would hate AUs like this so I don’t bother posting these ideas especially if they are not fleshed out. I have so many but these are my most promising ones.

The previous holder AU is one of my favourites because I had Captain Noir and Commander Bug’s story in my head forever. I love me some pirates. I know their whole miraculous story, like how they fell in love and why she became a pirate etc. The part where they become ghost mentors is a fairly new addition, been rolling it around for a month now and it is 100% caused by the shitty parenting via la agreste.

The mythical miraculous one is extremely fun for me, but it was one of those AUs were I believed no one would like it so....yeah enjoy it?

My evening just took an unexpected turn because the friend I crushed on in kindergarten and elementary school and briefly in high school (long story) just texted me and I’m freaking out and my best friend and I are trying to figure out if it’s destiny or just coincidence. I keep playing with this idea. I love it, I actually developed it even further, deeper into Caleb’s past actually, but that’s a story for another day. At the same time, I’m asking myself if it isn’t too much. I don’t know. Not that I hate the idea of soulmates, but wouldn’t this be too cheesy?

I went super short for the first time in years earlier this year and LOVE it. It's shaved on the sides (but a longer shave, not bare skin) and a little longer on top. I also dye my hair fun colors. It's currently fall shades of reds, oranges and some yellow. The sides are not dyed.

Omg that sounds so fun! I would love to do that too. But with how things are developing, I’m most likely going to end up with badly bleached hair and/or badly cut bangs sooner or later...I’m fairly sure I’ll be THAT girl...

Anyway, yeah, to be fair, I’ve never liked this hair either. I never put it on any sims. But I like it on him. It’s just...him. But now, with how far I am in the NSB, I think he has to be sick of it :D I mean, I let my hair grow long for like three years and I got sick of it, he’s had this for what, over a hundred years technically?? The change is inevitable.

And yes, I’ll probably be deciding between 4 and 5. They’re the best.

It’s very hard to top it. It happened to me in both my big legacies. The yellow gen was fun, but when I look at it...it just won’t be as cool as the rose gen. I have hopes for the grey gen though. Things might be a little wilder here...which is exactly what I like. Chaos. Pure chaos. *evil laughter*

Thank you...this week really was the worst so far. I’m starting to feel like I made a mistake and that I don’t belong here. It’s not so bad during the Czech classes (well...I do feel stupid after every Theory of Literature and I have no idea how to write the assigned essay but that’s the least of my problems), but the History ones...I love history, but I’m finding out that I don’t know that much about it and it makes me wonder how the hell did I get here. What happened that they accepted me. I thought I was a history nerd, but there are people who are SO into it, I’m nothing compared to them. They know so much, it almost makes you think they were there to live through those times they’re talking about. I thought that was the kind of knowledge we would get here. Clearly not. And now...idk. I’m kind of paralyzed now. I want to catch up, but I can’t. Yay.

Sorry to be so negative, I just need to vent. I’m not doing too great.

167 cm i think... or 166 cm. i don’t know i should check it out soon lol .

2. what color and style is your hair?

I’m a natural dark brunnete. I always kept my wavy hair very long, especially this year and i seriously need to cut them. Even though medium hair length suits me better i refuse to cut them. I don’t style my hair because i lack the skills, so i leave them down to my waist.

3. what color are your eyes?

Grey blue.

4. do you wear glasses?

Yes! I wear glasses since i was 8 and my myopia is TOO high.

5. do you wear braces?

Yes i used to, for 2 years during primary school.

6. what is your fashion style?

Casual i guess?I’m very simple and during winter i’m bored XD I prefer summer because i love shorts and tops! I wear many fandom/movie t shirts and basic colours. On a good occasion i may put a little effort wearing a pair of hoops and a lipistick.

I was born in a town from Greece and i still live there.

A regular high school which is practically over.

I consider myself to be a good student, especially in language courses ( ancient greek, latin,essays etc) and i fail miserably at mathematics and physics. Even though i have to say ,if i try , i can be more than decent to these subjects. I’m just bored.

12. do you like school?

Right now, no i hate it, i just want it to be over and move on to university.

13. what are your favorite school subjects?

I like literature, modern greek and english. But at this phase because i’m always studying i despise everything lol

14. favorite TV shows?

Well, despite the horrible ending, Game of Thrones will always be my favourite tv show( for now). From season 1 until season 8 episode 3 i loved everything about it. I would like to pretend the rest of the season doesn’t exist, and move on. My favourite characters ( and my OTP Jonerys)will always have a special place in my heart.

Peaky Blinders is my second favourite tv show, i love it! Thomas Shelby is so dark, yet who can NOT love him? Loved every season, i hope season 5 delivers too.

Stranger things is nice, i liked season 1 very much, but not that much the second season. I’m not that excited for season 3 but i hope it surprises me plesantly!

It would be unfair if i didn’t include Glee! I started watching it when i was like 12, i hold on so many beautiful memories from this show even though it is long over. Seasons 1-3 were AMAZING! I need to rewatch them soon.

Honorable mention : Skam! The original of course. I don’t usually like high school tv shows any more but i found it realistic and had cool and iconic characters!

Shows that i started enthusiastically but stopped watching because they dissapoinnted me:Vikings,Pretty Little Liars,13 reasons why etc

They are SO many! I will make a make top 10 list for some of them:

1. Pan’s Labyrinth

2. The Shining

3. Black Swan

4.Perfume: The story of murderer

5.La la land

6. A clockwork orange

7. Rosemary’s baby

8. 2001 : A space odyssey

9.Schindler’s List

10. The godfather part 1 and 2 ( i consider them one film)

I could write a really long list but i decided to stop at 10 lol

16. favorite books?

My favourite book is ‘’Lolita’.Highly contoversial but it’s such a well written book and reading this i understood what is beautiful literature. I mean look at the opening! So beautiful! : “Lolita, light of my life, fire of my loins. My sin, my soul.[...] She was Lo, plain Lo, in the morning, standing four feet ten in one sock. She was Lola in slacks. She was Dolly at school. She was Dolores on the dotted line. But in my arms she was always Lolita.”

Just keep in mind that this is NOT a love story but a twisted dark fantasy from a pervent who basically destroyed a young girls life.Okay i stop here, i just love this book so much. Other books :

A Song of Ice and Fire series. I don’t know if i want to read ADWD now, but they are excellent books. Also the World of Ice and Fire is hands down, BRILLIANT and the illustrations captivating.

The hunchback of notre dame. I can read again and again and not get tired of it.

Me Before You. Read it twice and cried twice like a baby. Heart warming. Same comment to the beautiful Light between the oceans.

17. favorite pastime?

Watching movies and tv shows. Sometimes writing crappy things. Going to the cinema.

18. do you have any regrets?

Yes but i try not to , and look to the future.

19. dream job?

A film journalist or a screenwriter. Anything related to the movie industry.

20. would you like to get married someday?

I don’t know. I would like to live the epic love story and have someone who will love me uncoditionally. Okay and after that i woke up and stayed forever alone. (probably)

21. would you like to have kids someday?

Yes, but iam too young to be that sure.

23. do you like shopping?

It depends. If we go 1-2 hours ( maximum) shopping and then go to the bookstore or somewhere to eat , then i love it lol

24. what countries have you visited?

None. But i hope to, in the future.

25. what’s the scariest nightmare you’ve ever had?

Can’t rememeber right now because my brain deletes unpleasant memories i guess XD

26. do you have any enemies? There are some people with whom I share a mutual dislike, but enemies.. No? Maybe one. Idk.

Nope.

28. do you believe in miracles?

It depends. Sometimes yes, sometimes no.. ( my answer does not make any sense i know haha)
