Don’t touch my child.
<if Paz Socorro lived Au>
Summary: Little Spider keeps getting picked on, Paz isn’t happy about it but kids are cruel. However, adults are old enough to know better and Paz is willing to put them all in their place if they don’t……………even if they’re visiting tribal leaders.
(Both of the clan leaders are real characters so you can google them to see what they look like 😁)
•••
Both the Olangi and Tayrangi clans had been staying with the Omatikaya for the past week. Things had been going reasonably well despite the initial tension of the clans interacting with sky people again after the war.
After the first incident of a few Olangi warriors getting riled up over the scientists, it had been unanimously decided that everyone would be better off if the humans stayed away….. decided by everyone but Spider and the Sully kids that is.
Other than that, as far as Jake could tell everything was going great. The people were happy to have something the celebrate and they were strengthening there bonds with their allies, not to mention catching up with old friends.
So yeah, everything was going great, the evening meeting was getting on almost perfectly….……until an angry Paz Socorro walked into the tent with her son sleeping on her hip.
“Paz, nows not a great time. I’ll speak with you once the meetings over” Jake spoke dismissively before apologising to the others chieftains for the interruption.
Paz scowled at him whilst she gently repositioned Spider so as not to disturb his sleep.
“No Jake. Now” a stunned silence filled the room. Mo’at only raised an intrigued eyebrow in response.
“You do not speak to the Olo’eyktan in that way demon” Akwey, the Olo’eyktan of the Olangi, raised his voice in outrage.
Paz’s cold eye scanned the man up and down before giving a disapproving humph and turning to Jake once again.
“Jake I’m going to need you to translate for me real quick, I want to make sure my words are understood” Paz’s voice was as cold as ice as she spoke.
“Paz, now is really not-“ Jake began to protest before Paz interrupted him whilst rolling her eyes.
“Mo’at, would you be a dear?” Paz asked sweetly as she gave the woman a genuine smile. She’d always been rather fond of the Tsahík since she’s met her.
“Certainly” Mo’at nodded. The feeling was very mutual. Paz smiled and nodded her head again in thanks.
“This is ridiculous!” Akwey yelled in outrage. Ikeyni, the young leader of the Tayrangi, nodded her head in silent agreement.
“Tsk” Paz only clicked her tongue in disappointment, seemingly spurring the man on.
“This demon has no voice here! It is a meeting of our clans!” The man continued yelling.
“You done?” Paz asked, her voice filled with motherly disappointment.
“How dare you-!?” His words were quickly cut off.
“Okay nose pick you had your turn. Now listen up” Paz’s voice was sharp and quiet as she gently bounced Spider, keeping him asleep despite the noise. Jake’s eyebrows shot up as his eyes briefly flickered to the stick piercing the bridge of the man’s nose.
“First of all, lower your voice. My son is sleeping and we’re all adults with fully functioning ears here” Paz said as she raised a disapproving eyebrow.
“This cannot be allowed!?” Akwey exclaimed.
“Akwey, be quiet so this can be done” Ikeyni groaned, earning a shocked look from the man and an approving nod from Paz.
“Thank you sweetheart” Paz briefly smiled to the young Olo’eyktan as if Ikeyni was a small child. Only to get shocked eyes in return from the woman.
Akwey huffed in annoyance.
“I’ll be brief. As I’ve said, this is my sweet little boy. His name is Miles but he prefers to be called Spider, if you talk to him you will address him as such. But” Paz turned towards Akwey as she paused.
“I would rather you don’t go near my son again as it’s you I have a problem with” Paz’s voice was heavily laced with venom she directed towards the man, whilst simultaneously rocking Spider gently from side to side.
“What’s this about?”Jake finally asked in confusion.
“Jake hunny, don’t interrupt me I’m still talking” Paz didn’t even turn towards him, only raising a single finger in his direction as her eyes focused on Akwey.
Jake sat stunned as Ikeyni attempted to stifle a snort.
“Earlier today, you insulted my son before grabbing him by the arm. I’m told you lifted him up before dropping him again after he bit you” Paz’s frown deepened whilst her voice remained quiet and reprimanding. Jake’s eyes widened in shock before his face darkened in displeasure.
“Whilst I don’t condone him biting you as that’s not how I raised him. I also can’t condemn him as you are an adult who should know better, especially after seeing the bruise you left on my little boy” Paz gently pulled Spider’s wrist into view, displaying a large darkening bruise across his forearm.
“Imagine my shock, as a mother, when my son comes crying to me saying this was the work of an adult” Paz gave the man a joyless smile. Jake could feel the malice radiating off of Paz’s small form, slowly but surly building the tension within room.
“So, seeing as no one has taught you this lesson it is my job to do so” Jake watched as the confidence slowly drained out of Akwey’s features. Even Jake himself was feeling uncomfortable and he wasn’t even the focus of the woman’s ire.
“You are a Na’vi adult, meaning you are very big and very strong” Paz paused, as if wanting to make sure the man was still following along.
“My son, is a six year old human, meaning he is little and breakable” Paz placed a gentle loving kiss onto Spider’s soft curls.
“Therefore, you should not put your hands on him, you should not manhandle him as if he was a Viperwolf or some other beast. Do you understand so far?”Akwey hesitantly nodded for the woman to continue.
“Good. So here is what we are going to do, and here is my warning. I will say it once so listen well” Paz’s voice was soft and firm as she repositioned a wriggling Spider, situating him comfortably on her other side.
“Tomorrow morning, you are going to apologise to my son and explain to him that what you did is in no way acceptable, and you feel sincerely sorry” Paz waited a moment, her eyes briefly flickering to each Olo’eyktan.
“This applies to all of you so listen up” Jake found himself subconsciously sitting up straighter. He was relived to see Ikeyni doing the same.
“If my son miss behaves you will bring him to me and I will punish him accordingly. You will be respectful and polite to everyone, including my child, just as you would any member or your clan.” Ikeyni silently nodded along to Paz’s words, although they felt more like orders none would dare to disobey.
“Most importantly, you will never put your hands on my child again, or I will tare you into tiny pieces and feed you to a Thanator. Am I understood?” There was no inflection in the woman’s voice, no empty threat in her words or an ounce of hesitation in her eyes. All three of them nodded instantly.
Jake wouldn’t soon forget the chill that ran up his spine as the woman smiled and nodded, he doubted any of the other chiefs would either.
“Good. Now I need to tuck my little Spider into bed, and you all have a meeting to get on with. Mo’at, thank you for being such a darling and translating for me” Paz grind sweetly at the woman, receiving and approving nod in return.
“Mmhmm mama” Spider mumbled as he began to stir.
“Shh baby go back to sleep, mama’s got you don’t worry” Paz gently rocked him back to sleep as he curled tighter around her.
“Good night” Paz whispered as she walked out of the tent.
“Good night” They all whispered back.
A thick silence fell within the tent, only to be broken when Mo’at let out an amused huff before leaving to…..well jake wasn’t entirely sure what she was going to do.
“I feel as if my mother has just told me off” Akwey spoke hesitantly.
“For one so small………she is fierce, like a mother 'angtsìk……I like her…but she is still very scary” Ikeyni said softly in amusement.
“Your telling me” Jake huffed as he ran his hands over his face and through his hair.
“Ma Jake, are you done?” Neytiri said as she popped her head inside the tent.
Jake took a moment to look at the too faces sat across from him.
“Yeah..yeah I think we’re done for now” despite having talked about nothing they had originally planned, both Akwey and Ikeyni instantly nodded in agreement.
The next morning Spider received a sincere apology, from a very sorry Olo’eyktan, much to the shock of everyone….well almost everyone.
Ikeyni spent the rest of her trip with Paz when she wasn’t needed elsewhere, asking the woman for advise on how to get stubborn warriors to listen to her without hesitation…..and complimenting and indulging Spiders every whim.
If Jake found himself referring to Paz as ma’am more often……well that was nobody’s business.

Hi! I'm curious what you think about the idea where Recoms decided to teach Spider to shoot a pistol and he turns out to be a natural talent. Like very rarely hits a target below 10. I'd love to see reactions from Quatitch, Lyle Zdog etc. and especially Spider.. I think he would be interrupted by how much he likes using this type of weapon..
Oh you KNOW Spider is a natural talent! He has the right energy, the right vibe, and most importantly the right mindset. I feel like sometimes I can be guilty of imagining Spider younger than he actually is, and while that's not inherently a bad thing, I forget sometimes to give him credit where credit is due. He's 16 so of course he feels like he's becoming a young man - a young warrior.
I'm sure he would be able to fire the stolen RDA weapons that Jake brings back from the raids at High Camp, but when he is with the recoms and they decide to try and hone his skills, no one is surprised to learn that he's a natural. Apart from Spider.
Z-Dog raises her eyebrows and begins to smirk the first time he ever shot the makeshift target (painted on a tree trunk), and was only a few inches away from the centre. She quickly realises how talented he is and begins to give him tips so that by the end of the session he's able to hit the middle pretty consistently. She hauls the others over to watch, and it's a good thing Spider can perform well under pressure, because the other recoms immediately start clapping and joking about how they now have to lock all the weapons away from the kid.
Quaritch is the most impressed, but the least surprised. Shooting runs in the family - it was in Spider's blood. Paz had been a natural too, and Quaritch fancied himself an expert. So it was really no wonder they produced a kid that could live up to their skills.
From then on, Spider always asks either Z-Dog or Lyle to practice if he's bored, and often times the rest of the squad would just hear random gunshots coming from somewhere nearby in the forest, knowing that it's nothing to worry about.
For Spider of course, he absolutely LOVES being good at something, and although he'd never admit it, he loved the praise that this particular talent earned him. It felt good to be competent, to be respected for something. He supposed this meant he fit in more with the recoms, but that wasn't why he felt good about it. He'd grown up around Na'vi warriors who could hold their own in a fight, and now finally so could he. He had mastered the bow and arrow years ago, it's true, but this was different. This was far more powerful.
Jake could do this, and now finally, so could Spider. He couldn't wait to show him.

I’ll always be there for you
Tumblr media
Credits: @bluekernal / @quaritchsgirl
Pairing: Avatar!Miles Quaritch & Kid!Miles Socorro
Summary: Even though it's challenging to be a single parent, let alone an avatar, Quaritch is doing his best to care for little Miles. But he still finds himself thinking about his previous life.
Notes: Please take a moment to read this. Check out @bluekernal/ @quaritchsgirl’s blog because she created this AU, and let me tell you, her artwork is incredible. This fanfiction was greatly inspired by her drawings.
While Miles did pass away in this fanfiction exactly like in the original film, the RDA would have started this project earlier because the avatar body was already on Pandora and the humans hadn’t been sent back to earth. The humans are still living there, but the Na’vi still don’t accept them so fights ensure from time to time. Even though Quaritch is an avatar now, he still retains his previous memories, and he continues to serve in the ‘military’ on Pandora without his consent since he literally became the RDA’s propriety, but Jake Sully isn’t that important to him, his son on the other hand is what matters most to Quaritch.
Tumblr media
Miles forbade his soldiers from having relationships between them. His first instruction as their commander was that. A weakness they cannot afford to have in the battlefield, according to his father, is having sentiments. And from a very young age, that was ingrained in him.
He couldn't believe it was him who had broken his most crucial rule.
Paz Sorroco. She was a bold and fierce woman. She had always been a more devoted soldier than he had ever been. Determined in everything she was doing. Paz even disregarded some directives that her superior had given her. She always thought it was worthwhile to fight for their home. She has always been very stubborn, something Miles has always found admirable in her.
Being completely honest, he never imagined that so much could change in just a short period of time. He always believed that there was nothing more in life that he could have asked for. Everything he ever wanted was given to him. But, as all stories go, something–er, someone came into his life. His baby boy, Miles Sorroco, came into the world. Paz’s greatest gift to him. He never understood why she had wanted to name the boy after him, but somehow right now, it brought him comfort. When Miles first saw him, he literally lost his ability to breath. He truly believed that the he could blow him away with only a small exhalation because the baby appeared to be so frail.
When Paz held the baby out to him, he was so insistent on refusing. He refused three times before the colonel finally took little Miles from Paz’s demanding hands. He hadn’t any clue on how to hold him. He had to sit right beside his partener in order to receive instructions. How the tables have turned. He tenderly held his head as he slowly rocked him. It didn’t feel real to him. Oh, how he remembers how his tiny hand wrapped around his finger. Paz could swore that she saw tears. When the little boy first opened his eyes, the soldier was shocked to see how much the boy resembled his mother.
Miles finally spoke “I’m—I’m a father, Paz.” His breathing was wavering and he just couldn’t believe it.
The woman besides him giggled “Yeah, you’re a father.”
He simply lifted the baby’s fist that encircled his finger and kissed it softly. “I promise you that I’ll always protect you little one.” He was unsure of why his father never felt this way about him, but he undoubtedly won't behave in the same way as his old man. He would try his best no matter what.
But he was unable to protect the boy's mother. That was the only time he disliked her stubbornness. Paz wanted to be there, to fight for their cause. So she didn't remain with another unit. Even now, he continues to hold himself responsible, but the idea that he was somehow lucky is something he still finds repulsive. He didn't fully recall how he died, but thanks to some insurance he had, they were able to transfer all of his memories into an avatar body. He was now RDA's property, a “Recom" as they call him.
The tail was what first upset him the most, which was strange. Most of the time, he made an effort to control it but had little success. Though he swiftly adjusted to his new form, he eventually came to terms with the fact that his ears and tail would always respond to his emotions, whether he liked it or not.
Although he was still on Pandora and felt secure knowing that not all of the unit had been destroyed and that it was still standing, he didn't give the other people any thought. His son was the most important thing to him right now. From this point forward, the toddler had only his father and he couldn’t help but feel guilty that his son will grow up without a mother.
For approximately six weeks, the boy had been staying with some nurses. He knew his son was safe but Miles couldn't quit thinking about him. He wasn't sure if the toddler was crying or eating properly, and he wasn't allowed to leave the grounds until the examinations were over. He didn’t like not knowing what was happening to his child.
The first time Miles saw Quaritch as an avatar was when he was a year old. He wasn't sure how the youngster would react, but it wasn't at all what he had anticipated. The soldier leaned over the tiny boy with both interest and fear as little Miles was hugging one of the nurses' legs and then child gazed up at his father. He would certainly not want to frighten the young boy so he moved slowly. He knelt to be closer to the toddler's eye level, but his son no longer turned to face the colonel. He continued to cling to the nurse like a monkey, burrowing his face into her leg. His heart began to race because he didn’t know exactly how to approach the young boy, but he tried, softly asking, "Miles?"
Finally, the young child turned to face him, his eyes a little moist as though he was about to cry. As the colonel drew near, his son murmured in a weak voice, "Dad?" When the child didn't back away from him, he felt more at ease and said, "Yea," chuckling as he added, "It's me Miles, your dad." The young kid immediately recognized his father's voice, but he wasn't certain it was indeed him. When Quaritch reached out with his blue hand, the boy let go of the nurse. Seeing a smile on her face as he looked up to get some form of confirmation, he realized everything was alright.
Little Miles approached the avatar slowly and gazed into the colonel's yellow eyes. Quaritch wasn't sure exactly what to do, he didn't want to frighten the child away, so he didn't move, and the boy eventually grabbed his hand.
He was unable to fathom the boy's current size in relation to himself. The youngster was so small. He didn't believe his son was capable of being cuter than before. When the toddler smiled at Miles, the soldier thought that he would have died of cuteness right there. His son’s little hand couldn't even grip three of his fingers. Paz, you would have cherished seeing this.
It will be hard taking care of the boy, he ain’t going to lie to himself, but he’ll manage, that’s for sure.
Tumblr media
Quaritch heard beeping nearby, which he instantly picked up, but he soon realized that he could actually sleep in today because his meeting wasn't until later in the afternoon. Even though he didn't want to open his eyes, he did so after stretching out an arm to shut the alarm. He checked on Miles and saw that the boy was still tucked in bed besides him. The only problem? Is that the alarm woke him up.
As he turned to face his father, the child rubbed his eyes a little and grinned when he realized that his father was also awake. Returning the smile, Quaritch once again buried his face in the cushions since he was unable to keep his eyes open. God, he was exhausted.
“Dad?” The four-year-old hopped over his father and said, "Come on, it's eight in the morning.” A huff was nevertheless pushed out even though he hardly felt the boy land on him.
“Just give me five more minutes to sleep, boy. “ He muttered into the sheets as little Miles got off the avatar and the bed.
“What am I supposed to do then?” He inquired, his voice containing a tinge of disappointment.
The recom didn't even have the energy to turn his head to look at the boy, only saying, "Play for a little while."
Knowing that his son hardly slept in, Quartich understood it was pointless to try to coax him to. Yet, little Miles never, ever played in silence, which forced him to wonder what the boy was up to. But, the colonel's five minutes of sleep quickly grew into an hour.
He didn't hear the child leave or enter the room again. With his plate of food still in hand, Miles carefully climbed back into bed. The soldier next to him woke up when he sensed movement, but he remained still. Given the smell, the young kid most likely eating an omlet.
“Dad?” his son asked with his full mouth.
“Mm?” He didn’t manage to even form a full word right now.
“It’s morning.” The little boy repeated as he put the plate on the night stand and went towards his father.
For a few minutes, Quaritch remained silent. But when Miles prodded his arm, he finally uttered a worn-out "no."
"Lyle went with me to the canteen," the kid huffed, flopping onto his back and started to gaze up at the ceiling.
The small child was quite frustrated that the colonel was still quiet. He gave him another hour to sleep; wasn't it enough for his father? He wanted to play with him because he knew his father was soon to leave on a mission and he wanted to spend as much time as possible with him before that happened. However, Quartich slept when his father could play with him. That won’t do at all.
The soldier was surprised by another tiny prod, but this time it was against his ribs. He initially tried to ignore it and try to get back to sleep, but then the poking started again, this time a little more forcefully. Little Miles appeared to laugh when his tail began to move slightly under the cover, but he still persisted in prodding his father.
He pushed himself to open his eyes with a quiet grunt. "Bud, please stop." Of course, his son continued on. Back against the pillows, Quartich groaned while pressing his face against them. He sometimes felt like this boy could be the death of him.
“Dad, wake up!” He chanted as the soldier supported himself on his arms to look at the boy. His son gave him a sweet smile in response.
“Miles..” he let a whine as he tried to now grab the little boy without much succes. He flipped over, still with his eyes half closed and that’s when the kid attached to the man before him. He started to use his father as a climbing frame.
As he resisted his father's attempts to catch him, he giggled and said, "I want to play."
Finally Quaritch managed to grab him and wrestle him off his neck. He looked at the boy and understood that there was no way that his son would let him go back to sleep so he accepted his defeat quickly. His tail started to flick playfully and then started to tickle the young boy, who erupted into giggles. A sleepy smile spread across his face at the joyous laughter emerging from his son. Little Miles gasped for air and the soldier finally stopped.
The boy began to jump up and down on the bed once more and the colonel sighed as he finally turned to look around the room, wanting to see the state it was in. The fact that there were toys all over the floor didn't bother him; however, the slime that was stuck to the wall did. How on earth did he pull that off?
He thought that maybe it was more preferable than Miles drawing on the wall. Just as long as he doesn't have to repaint the walls…again—it’ll be alright.
“What did you do to the wall?” Quaritch questioned as his son stopped bouncing and refrained from even looking at him in the eyes.
“I didn’t mean to.” Little Miles spoke in a low voice and he just couldn’t be mad at him. But that doesn’t mean he won’t be the one to clean it.
“It's alright, buddy, but you still need to clean it, y’know.” After receiving a nod, Quaritch picked up his son so they could prepare for the day. He would deal with the wall later.
It was usually simple to give him a shower, but his child loathed brushing his teeth more than anything.
Miles wiggled to be set down as soon as they entered the bathroom. “I don't want to." he complained to his father. The colonel still tried to explain that if the little boy will clean his teeth, he won’t be going to the dentist anywhere near the future, but yet he always misunderstood what his father was saying to him.
His ears flopped down as he made an effort to reason with the 4-year-old. Finally when his kid finally took the toothbrush from his grasp, he began to think about Miles' first trip to the dentist.
When they both entered the hallways from unit 7, the scent of the sterile environment mixed with dental care chemicals was obvious. Quaritch had never been afraid of the dentist, even as a kid because he didn't have any dental issues and usually just went for a checkup. But today wasn’t about him, it was about his son.
It wasn't like little Miles would have any kind of procedure done to him—it was simply a straightforward dental exam—but his kid clung to him as he visibly stiffened. The young boy whispered softly, "I'm scared" as he still didn’t want to let go of his father.
The soldier smiled, attempting to reassure the boy that he had nothing to be afraid of. "All Doctor Palmer is going to do is look at your teeth for a little while," the soldier said. “That's all.”
Although his son remained silent, Quaritch could tell that he was still uncertain. "Do you really believe I would take you somewhere or permit someone to hurt you?"
Little Miles said, "No," as he encircled his father's neck with his arms. “But what if they remove all of my teeth and force me to wear fake teeth?”
Quaritch wasn't at all prepared for such question, and he was certain Lyle was responsible for instilling his kid with that ridiculous idea. He really wanted to speak with his soldier later.
“Don't worry, she won't.” He responded briefly. “And besides, that’s usually done for older people.”
“Oh. Like you and Lyle?" The young boy asked sincerely, and it's safe to assume that his father was surprised. But, one of the dental hygienists showed up before he could respond. He remembered her quite well. When they were still getting used to their new bodies, Doctor Palmer was one of the dentists who checked to see if anything was wrong with any of them.
“You must be Miles.” The little boy, that was still in his father’s arms, received a warm smile from the woman. “We’re ready for you now.” She didn’t say anything as they went to an examine room and as Quaritch ducked under the door so that he could enter, Miles simply tightened his hold on his father.
As she put down his tablet, the colonel also put the boy down even if he did get some protests from his son.
“Alright Miles, if you would take a seat.” Doctor Palmer said as she placed a booster seat on the large examaning chair.
The 4 year old took a step back and braced himself against his father’s legs.
“Miles, it’s alright. I’m right here.” Quaritch reassured him “Go on.”
He gave his father one last glance before turning to go towards the chiar, uttering a low "okay."
The soldier saw his son ascend the booster seat and breathed through his mask.
“Is he allergic to any kind of medication?” The doctor asked his father.
“No” He replied as he watched the woman jot down the details in a folder, then made his way over to the sink to wash her hands. The doctor then donned a brand-new set of latex gloves.
"So Miles, do you have a favorite animal?" She inquired so the little boy could loosen a bit.
“I like spiders.” He declared while beaming enthusiastically.
“Spiders? How so?"
“I saw the movie Spider-Man recently! He is the coolest superhero.” As soon as she noticed that he had somewhat relaxed, the woman smiled.
“I agree. I like how his suit the most.” She said to him as she started to raise her hands “So Miles, let’s see those teeth. Open wide.”
The boy's smile quickly vanished as he turned to face his father, who had a comforting smile on his face. The boy then finally opened his mouth.
Quaritch felt like the exam and the cleaning went well. Miles was calm while Doctor Palmer cleaned his teeth. It was when the metal instruments were starting to get used was when he noticed that his son started to grasp the chair tightly. The doctor was able to calm him somehow, but stopped abruptly when the boy flinched.
The colonel’s ears peeked up as he looked at them unsure at what was happening.
“It seems you have a cavity, Miles" The doctor continued, turning to face his father, "It's on his canine on the lower jaw.”
“What should we do?” Quaritch asked as he looked at his son, seeing that he was distressed.
“Normally, I would be thinking about getting it fixed right now since it’s small, but if you feel like we should leave it alone since it’s a baby tooth, we could do that.” She explained as she looked now at the agitated boy.
“I don't want it to cause him any issues.” Quaritch replied as he drew nearer to the boy.
“Will it hurt?” His eyes were glassy as he observed the woman in front of him.
She assured him, "No," and pointed to the device she was using. She gave the young kid an opportunity to examine the high-speed headpiece in her palm.
Miles finally opened his mouth once more, but he remained silent. But when Doctor Palmer turned on the instrument, that’s when the boy started to cry.
Quaritch still remembers how his son immediately came over to him. He really didn’t think that Miles would get scared, but he couldn’t do anything about that anymore. The cavity wasn’t that serious, but you never know. He would occasionally whine that his tooth hurts after eating sweets, but the baby tooth will fall out really soon according to Doctor Palmer. It wasn’t bad, but Quaritch still wanted to get it fixed. He made an attempt to convince his son, but it was useless. He was adamant about not wanting to visit the dentist ever again.
As he broke his train of thought, a smile reappeared on his face as he observed the child brushing his teeth. His son exclaimed that he was finished after pausing to rinse.
Without wasting any time, he exited the bathroom and shouted that he was going to clean the wall. Quaritch began his own routine but knew that his son would soon require assistance.
Even if being Miles's father was a challenge itself, the colonel couldn't deny that he would be lost right now if it wasn’t for the young child. He wouldn't trade his current life for anything.

Part 1/ Part 2/ Part 3/ Part 4/ ?
Notes: I won't lie; it was difficult to write for both of them, but I genuinely wanted to turn Quartich into a soft dad. In addition, if you guys liked this, I think I'd like to write more of them.😅

I've seen a lot of "IF PAZ LIVED AU" and she always joins the Na'vi but here are my opinions for it (headcannons sort of)
Paz stayed behind because Quaritch lied about when they were leaving so she was with spider when they left (She was cussing him like a dog in Spanish, when he got back it was gonna be 10 times worse)
But he didn't come back instead standing with Parker and the science pukes with her son in her hip inside hells gate, here come's Jake Sully and his little native wife as well as others
She didn't know what was going on but she looked for Quaritch for 10 minutes before Parker walked over to her
"I-.... I'm sorry Paz" and handed her the Colonel's dog tags
Paz stared at the tags for a second or two before she tilted her head back and looked back at the tags her hand over her mouth crying, something she never did in front of anyone but Miles
Jake had watched with a curious look because he didn't know what her connection was to Quaritch
Paz laid with little spider cuddling to her chest holding on to her dog tags that night
Mo'at met Paz visiting Hells Gate with Jake one day and was horrified to learn that Jake intended to put spider in cryo when it could kill him to send him back to earth
She fought Jake, Neytiri,Arwkey, and others to let Paz stay because she had her daughter taken from her,she would NOT willingly put another mother through having to leave or lose her child, after Jake suggested sending Paz back only to send spider back when he was older
In the end Arwkey's mate,Inkeyni and her mate, and most elder's sided with Mo'at,Jake Sully could not force Paz Socorro and her son to leave Pandora
Paz later got a visit from Jake after he had discovered she was Quaritch's lover and Baby Mama
Paz after hearing one worthless, absolutely Pathetic, severely insincere apology from Jake told him to get the fuck out before she shot him
When Jake turned to leave she said this
"You wanna know my babies name Sully? It's Miles Sully. I named him after his daddy"
Jake was pissed and sure Paz had just named him that to get under his skin... It worked better than he wished
But after the war and Jake figures out Neytiri is pregnant.. he usually was found most nights at late hours getting drunk with Paz,the only other person who would understand his thoughts, even though they hated each other
Paz made sure her son knew everything his daddy did but wasn't one sided with it like the Na'vi who said he was a monster while Paz accurately said he did bad things for the right reason and spider agreed with Paz
Spider met Kiri and since he couldn't say it right called her "Kitty" for the first five years of knowing her
Paz loved Kiri because she was a sweetheart little girl who didn't shun her son for being a demon
Paz also will refer to Kiri as Miha or Mi Nina my daughter and my girl
Paz first met Lo'ak while he was trying to show Jake a picture of an Ikran he drew but Jake had gotten very annoyed with it and hissed at Lo'ak to leave him alone for 5 seconds while he did something
Paz had gotten very pissed at Jake but walked over and asked Lo'ak if he would show her his picture which he did and Paz asked if she could keep it because it was so pretty. Lo'ak happily said yes and was all smiles the rest of the day
But the harder Jake and Neytiri got on Lo'ak as he got older the more he drifted to Paz as an affectionate parental figure.
Accidentally called her Mama in English once after getting in trouble for fighting by Jake and Jake Jerking a knot in his tail (Not literally but you get the drift)
Paz was very upset as to why he freaked out so badly about an accident but told him if he wanted to call her Mama he could
He did so often and Kiri seeing the very clear favoritism her parents showed her and Neteyam and Tuk she drifted away some as well.
Kiri calls Paz Sanu(Mom/Mama) and calls Jake and Neytiri Sempul(Father) and Sanok(Mother)
Lo'ak calls them the same thing
Paz has a scrap book with pictures of her and spider, her and Lo'ak and her and Kiri. The kids made a full page for her birthday they planned themselves
Lo'ak wrote under a picture of him being hugged by her after getting his Ikran " Happy Birthday Mama❤️"
Kiri wrote under a picture of her hugging Paz's shoulders and leaning over her shoulder on the side "I love you Sanu" and "Happy Birthday Sanu" below it
And spider wrote under a picture of her hugging his shoulders from behind with her head on top of his "I love you Mami"
Paz also calls Lo'ak Miho and Mi nino like she does spider
Lo'ak and spider came back from the village one day after getting hit and not fighting back. Paz said this
" I don't give one flying fuck if Sully gets mad someone lays a hand on you or Kiri and Tuk you put them flat on their ass and make damn sure to hurt'em"
Argued and won against Jake afterwards
Mo'at and Paz became very close due to understanding each other very well
Paz and Kiri have weekly girl sleepovers and girl talks mostly about boys and men that are hot (Paz The men of the clan/Unmated) Kiri usually spider is her number 1(Paz knew about the crushes before they started) would talk about boys who had already passed the rites of passage (Ikeniyi's clan). She thought they were more attractive and mature than her clan.
Paz was the first person Kiri told when a boy from Ikeniyi's clan started courting her(Right after she got her Ikran) Paz threatened him within an inch of his life
Okay I think I've been at this for way to long now so any readers I apologize for making you read so much but vote please
Also feel free to suggest or request a one-shot from me

Loved and wanted
female spider
Tumblr media
After the humans had been sent back to their dying world, the navi and remaining human had gotten back to rebuilding their lives. There were some stuff that they didn't expect to come across during their exception of the RDA military base. No one their wildest mind though they will come across a sleep baby girl in the quarters of paz Socorro, but many more secrets will be realized about the
Jake " she so adorable"
norm " she is she kinda of reminds me of paz bu her hair color and eyes" a group of adults were looking at the baby girl laying in crib that had been found for her.
neytiri " I never knew the sky people had children among them"
mo'at " yes grace had told us about human children and babbies but I never thought I will see one" mo'at had reach out one of her fingers towards the baby girl, who took touched her finger and smiled.
tsu'tey " she so mall but mighty as well"
neytiri " what has become of the baby girl parents are they here with us" the room had fallen silent after neytiri questions, many death of those who were close to them still affect everyone. Neytiri looked at the baby girl as she smiled looking around the room.
norm " well we all know of her mother she was one of the few military that fought for us"
tsu'tey " was"
norm " her mother name was paz Socorro she was close to us scientists and treated us fairly but she dead, leaving the girl alone in the world"
mo'at " poor child to lose a mother at such a young age what of her father, has the man not stepped up"
Jake " her father was killed in the war he fought for the rda"
neytiri " who was this man anyways" norm soon showed a picture of quairitch the man who was well know by face and voice by all navi.
tsu'tey " that demon is this child father that can't be"
Scientist " it true we ran many test and it came out positive for him, that her dad"
neytiri " why would a women love him he was cruel"
Jake " none of us know why paz had fallen in love with him and had a child with him, but we all know he wasn't that much in her life and had paz sent towards us .... it seems like he wanted the baby girl out of his view"
mo'at " such a innocent child hated by one parent for no good reason"
tsu'tey " what is going to become of her now"
norm " well we can't send her back it not safe for her and she has no family left on earth"
Jake " the scientist have planned on keeping her here and raising her, as this planet is her home she was born here"
neytiri " mother"
mo'at " she is a child of eywa my daughter even due she human she belong here, the great mother welcome all her children" mo'at soon picked up the baby and smile at the little girl.
tsu'tey " dose she have a name"
norm " yes she called myla Socorro or to you guys she will be called myla daughter of paz Socorro"
neytiri " well hello there mlya it so nice to meet you"
Jake " well it seems like it official she staying here on Pandora, we can deal with the rest when the times comes" everyone seem to agree on that, the humans were going to raise this child well and with love. When the time came they will finally tell her about her father, as she will need to know the truth once she old enough to understand.
years later
myla " hahah" a small child myla was running in the human base barefoot once again, as norm was chasing after her once again.
norm " get back here young lady shoes are not that bad"
myla " no" the human have been trying shoes with myla with not use, well she did wear some footwear like sandals but not close toe shoes. The girl had spent most of her time being raised by navi and human, that she had loved walked barefoot that times.
norm " oh come on they are not that bad"
myla " no" myla was running trying to get away from norm as she didn't feel like wearing shoes, as she was racing she soon felt someone grab her.
tsu'tey " there you are wild child"
myla " tsu'tey" tsu'tey and Jake had came for visit and her the whole situation that was unfolded.
Jake " it seems like you are giving norm a run for his money"
norm " haha very funny Jake I blame you all she has gotten faster because of the navi training she was given, now it hard to keep up as she getting smarter each day"
max " hey at leasts he keeps us fit and healthy"
myla " yeah" myla was clapping her hands and laughing as she looked at the adults around her.
max " what do you know so an early visit you both were not scheduled to come until later on"
Jake " well we had some free time and were going to come later but ...."
????? " myla" soon the sound of banning on the window had gotten everyone attention, as everyone soon saw three navi kids standing there.
Jake " they wish to come see myla right away and we not taking a no" myla eyes light up when she saw her friends and race to the door to go outside with them.
Scientist 2 " hold your horse young lady you need mask remember" one of the scientists had grabbed myla mask and myla had soon taken it and put in on.
norm " have it on correctly"
myla " yes"
lo'ak " myle come play with us"
myla " coming"
kiro " we have something cool to show you"
Jake " she coming boys slow down she need her mask" the three boys nod their heads. Myla was soon ready for a new day of play and adventure.
max " remember the rules"
myle " stay close to home and the home tree and don't go near the battle field"
max " good and what else"
myla " see anything strange call for help and don't touch"
max " okay you can go" myla soon opened the door and face outside to join her three friends, and they all soon took off running. The adults soon smiled as they watched the kids have fun and chase flying lizards around.
Present time
myla " ........."
mo'at " you are doing well my child"when myla had become a teen mo'at had started teaching her some of the healers way, seeing that the girl had a talent with healing and kindhearted.
myla " thank you"
kiro " wow myla you are really great with identifying herbs"
myla " thank you I had been doing extra work by collect some data for norm and the others"
kiro " wow" myla had been see as when of the people from a very young age, and had earned the respect of the clan. The girl was shocked that she was still allowed to come near the clan after, finding out about him.
mo'at " what wrong my child"
myla " last night norm had called me for a family talk, Jake was there along with max and tsu'tey they said they need to discharge something relate to me"
kiro " oh did you find out about your dad"
myla " yes he was the leader of the military and was the one who destroyed the first home tree he killed so many, they told me about him ..... now I wonder if I will still be allowed to stay here"
kiro " well if you leave then I will leave as well"
mo'at " no rushing children myla since I saw you when you were a baby I could tell, that you are pure and heart nothing like that man you call father ... you are far from him you will never become like him"
myla " thank you"
kiro " see maya you are love by everyone and we are here to keep you safe"
myla " thank you kiro"
kiro " if you leave me here then I will be stuck with lo'ak as a friend, and then I will be bored out of my mind" myla soon laughs at Kiro words, as mo'at had soon shacked her head. Later that night myla was sitting with norm and max having dinner, she knew that she love by everyone and cared for but she still worried how long this happens will stay.

Plot Idea for Avatar and Avatar:The Way Of Water:
***Warning: brief mention of rape***
Role Reversal. What if Spider’s mom, Paz Socorro, was the Colonel on Hell’s Gate and not Quaritch? She was able to rise in ranks on Earth by being ruthless and cunning and that made her perfect for the job on Pandora. She instilled fear from everyone, including Selfridge. She also has a way of getting what she wants. She was able to convince Jake into spying for her, but the events stayed the same and Jake fought for the Na’vi. Paz died and was able to come back as a Recom to finish the job.
Quaritch, however, was a marine on Hell’s Gate. He was a Pilot in one of the units that helped the scientists. He still has a harsh exterior, but not as bad as Paz’s or his original counterpart. Paz tries to seduce him while on Hell’s Gate, but he keeps on rejecting her. It got to the point that she took extreme measures and ended up pregnant with his son. She uses their son as leverage to get him to fight in the battle against Jake and the Na’vi. He ends up dying due to him and his team switching sides in the end. He returns as a Recom, as well. But this time he goes against Paz and helps Jake so he could be closer to his son.
It is Paz who kidnaps Spider and tries to force him to give up information on Jake. How will things change?
Grace Augustine lives in this fic.

If Paz Socorro Lived.
What if Paz Socorro had had a chance to raise her son?
<<idk if I’m gonna do anything with this, but if I do then this is like a first draft / basic idea>>
What if when the war broke out Paz decided to go awol. Not wanting to fight and die leaving her son alone, but not wanting to go against the people she’s come to know as her friends? As her family?
So she loaded her ship, made sure it was ready and decked out, but what if she’d added supplies? Human safe foods and a few research books, bio scanners, basic survival supplies, blankets and batteries but most importantly…her precious little stowaway. Hidden in one of the boxes used to transport plants from earth that needed oxygen to survive.
She loaded up like everyone else, flew toward to the floating mountains like everyone else. Only she hung back, further from the front lines than she’d ever been before.
When the fighting was in full swing she saw her chance. Using the cover of fire and banshee attacks she pulled back, away from the battle, manoeuvring between everything as quickly as she could. No one noticed. Too much was going on to focus on every single little ship.
No one but Quaritch that is.
Quaritch had seen her pull back. Part of him had been relived to see her making her break. He knew he should have been pissed, knew he should’ve have shot her down for deserting.
But that there was one of the best people he’d ever had the pleasure of knowing. That was mother of his little boy.
So he’d let her leave, hell he provided cover until he lost sight of her behind the floating mountains.
Later, as the Pandora air choked his lungs, as Neytiri’s arrows burned in his chest and his life was nearing its end. He couldn’t help but be relived that he’d at least see Paz escape, at least someone would be there to watch little Miles grow up.
Paz flew her ship towards where Trudy had told her one of the old bunkers were (like the ones they’d used in the first movie) that had been left by some of the scientists, hidden away by the trees.
As she was drawing closer, she was attacked. One of the Na’vi spotted her, attacking the ship until it fell from the sky. The only thing that saved them was the thick vines hanging between the trees, catching them before they could hit the ground.
The glass had been cracked by an arrow that landed and inch away from Paz, sparing her life until enough of the poisonous air could filter through.
Once the fog cleared from her mind Paz jumped into action. Barely remembering to secure and Exopack to her face as she rushed to check on her little boy.
The container had held steady, not a single crack, her little boy still sleeping soundly inside.
“Oh thank god” Paz sighed as she draped her body over the box, catching her breath and allowing her mind to realise she was in fact still alive. That miles was still alive.
Paz eventually managed to force the door open. The distance between the ground and her ship would be a deadly drop. She’d have to figure out how to get both her and her littler boy down safely. Then they’d have to try their luck on the forest floor……trying not to get eaten…….while they look for a bunker……..that may or may not still be intact…great.
Basic idea:
Paz survives and escapes with spider
Her ship crashes after being attacked
She raises her son hiding from the Na’vi and humans a like
Spider gets a parent that really loves him and helps he develop as well as she can while keeping him safe
Spider also can’t go outside since the scientists never would have needed to make him a mask
Spider eventually meets one of the sully kids while Paz is away
A friendship forms but the parents all just assume it’s imaginary friends for a while
The parents meet
Lil spider gets and mask and Paz is really happy for him
Movie stuff happened just with a really protective Paz and a mama’s boy Spider
Not my best writing but you get the point.
idk if anyone is interested in this idea but here it is 😅 let me know if it’s worth taking this anywhere or if anyone would like more✨❤️
My asks at open if you want to ask me anything❤️
I hope you enjoyed reading ❤️

Idea Time
Just me rambling / half writing about a modern avatar au
Tags: Kidnapping, mentioned child murder (no kids actually die though you'll see what I mean), mentioned actual murder, domesticity??? The Sully Family rock idk
BASICALLY what if Spider went missing as a child and Quaritch went to jail for it AND THEN SPIDER TURNED BACK UP AGAIN YEARS LATER??? Maybe I'll actually write this for real maybe I won't. Just felt like jotting it down is all.
The Sully Family is having a typical day on the weekend. Things are normal, the weather is nice, everyone is off work and school on Saturday. Neytiri and Neteyam are in the kitchen doing dishes after family breakfast. Tuk is in the living room watching morning cartoons, and Jake is pretending not to be as invested in them as he really is.
Kiri is also in the living room on her nintendo switch playing Stardew Valley. She's got earplugs in to block out the sound of Tuk's chattering and the cartoons on the tv screen. Lo'ak is at the dining table on his phone, repeatedly typing out and deleting a text message to his classmate Tsireya.
Hey?
Backspace backspace backspace
Good morning, Tsireya!
Did you want to go to the movies today maybe?
Backspace backspace backspace back—
Jake's phone rings and he excuses himself into the hall to answer it. Everyone barely pays attention to the phone call as Jake answers it. Why would they? It's a typical day.
Less than 5 minutes later Jake reenters the living room and calls for everyone to "fall in." His voice is strained, something in it grabbing even Lo'ak's attention immediately.
They all stop what they're doing and crowd into the living room. Neytiri wipes her hands dry on a towel and slings it over her shoulder as she stands in the entryway, Neteyam sits next to Kiri as she pauses her game. He mutes the television and pulls Tuk off the floor and into his lap. Lo'ak sits carefully in the recliner, looking at his dad's face which has paled significantly.
Jake is gripping the armrests of his wheelchair tightly. The phone call must have been bad news. Maybe another military buddy died? Maybe the school called to tell him about Lo'ak's frequent tardiness which is totally not his fault by the way—
What Jake says next sends the world dropping out from underneath everyone's feet.
"They found Spider. He's alive."
Spider. As in Spider Socorro? None of them have heard that name in....well in probably a decade, when the boy first disappeared. An image of the smiling six year old boy from across the street flutters up from the recesses of Lo'ak's mind.
Spider had been presumed dead for years. His dad, Miles Quaritch, has been in prison for the past decade for killing his wife and son one night. The Sully Family were at Disneyland at the time, and while he hides it well, Jake still blames himself a little for not being there. If he had been, maybe he'd have heard something. Maybe he'd have been able to intervene, or see where Quaritch ran off to with the boy.
Quaritch has held onto his innocence every day since. All the way through the trial he insisted that he didn't kill his wife, someone broke in and knocked him out. Yes it was his gun, yes it was his prints, yes it was Paz's blood on his hands when the police showed up after a neighbor called 9-1-1. But if you had woken up to your wife bleeding out right next to you and your son gone, wouldn't you try to put pressure on the wound, too?
Even when Paz's mother begged during the trial for Quaritch to tell them all what he did to her grandson, where he buried the poor boy's body, he wouldn’t budge.
"If I knew where he was I would be the first one at the scene. I didn’t kill him."
But there were no other leads. No other suspects. Quaritch had no alibi or evidence to support his claims.
Lo'ak had been much too small to understand what really happened. He went to Paz and Spider's funeral but barely remembers it, at the time he just knew that his friend across the street wasn't going to be around anymore. Not until he got to middle school and did some research himself did he actually get the situation in its entirety.
And now, everything is changing. They found Spider, somewhere, somehow. Quaritch might very well have been an innocent man this whole time. Jake hasn't gone into detail just yet.
Neteyam asks, "What happened?"
Jake sighs heavily, runs a hand over his head. "That was Norm on the phone."
Norm, their old family friend who works in the police station as a CSI. He was one of the people that analyzed the evidence at the crime scene, he helped put Quaritch away.
"He says that an officer was doing his rounds last night and saw a kid walking aimlessly down the road. When he stopped him, the kid identified himself as Miles Socorro."
"Could he be lying, though?" Lo'ak wonders aloud.
Jake shakes his head. "The fingerprints match from the school database."
Lo'ak remembers vaguely the school-wide event years ago when all the students got their fingerprints taken. He still has the ID card he got from it, buried somewhere in his memories box underneath his bed. The event was for the Child Seeker's Program, developed to protect kids in the district in case they ever went missing.
So much help it had been for Spider.
But here he was, a decade later, showing up with the police. There’s got to be more to the story that dad isn't telling them, or maybe Jake doesn't yet know the details himself. What started off as a normal Saturday has been flipped onto its head.
That leaves them all to ponder the same question. What happens now?

🕸️🕷️ Weaving the Web 🕷️🕸️
Chapter 3: News To Me
Quaritch was fuming as he stormed back to the command center. Ja’s words stabbed at his mind, reopening the still fresh wound from learning that the boy was subjected to excessive interrogation without his knowledge.
You’d have to not be protected by them.
Those were the words his trusted medic said when explaining how a sixteen-year-old human kid had their brain put through four progressively worsening modes of a blender.
Restrictions Omitted.
Who in their goddamn mind approved lifting protective restrictions when it was common knowledge that most prisoners were left with life-depreciating conditions? No more than invalids who couldn’t hold a spoon or their own piss half the time? Some prisons on Earth were no more than adult daycare.
“General Ardmore.” Quaritch said louder than intended, not even announcing his presence before ducking into her office. Calm down. He repeated these words in his head constantly as the woman looked up from her computer screen but did not stop typing. Nothing threw the general off her game it seemed.
“Colonel.” Ardmore acknowledged in response, “Two personal visits in one day. I’m flattered you have so much time to fit into your increasingly busy schedule.”
“The boy.” Quaritch said lowly, unable to stop his ears from pinning back, “Miles Socorro.”
“How is Mr. Socorro?” she asked casually. As if the boy didn’t have the physical manifestation of a psychotic break put him in the infirmary only hours prior.
“I haven’t spoken with him yet. It seems his extensive interrogations before heading out into the wild may be responsible for his condition.” Quaritch growled. Keep calm and mind the attitude. These repeating mantras weren’t doing a good job at staving off the desire to flip the general’s desk clear across the room and enact his own interrogation on what the hell she was thinking.
“Interesting.” Ardmore said as she stopped typing and stood up. She tented her fingers and leaned forward on her desk, leering up at the recom with no fear in her eyes. “He seemed like he recovered so well.”
“He would be recovered if he wasn’t subjected to twice the legal limit of sessions in the neuroscanner.” Quaritch snapped and Ardmore went quiet for a moment. He thought maybe her silence was in response to him having found out about the ‘secret’ interrogation sessions. Maybe he’d caught her in the act of something she wanted to hide from him.
But Ardmore was as difficult to disturb as she was to read. Cold, domineering, and unshakeable. Her next words certainly supported her reputation.
“Twice the legal limit for Earth citizens, colonel.” Ardmore corrected coolly.
“Spider is human.” Quaritch said quickly. The boy was born from human soldiers putting their lives on the line for the rest of humanity. And yet the son of Miles Quaritch and Paz Socorro wasn't considered a human worth protecting?
“But not technically an Earth citizen.” Ardmore said with narrowing eyes.
“Why would the humans born on Pandora be treated different than those born on Earth?” Quaritch asked, shaking his head and holding up his hands to pause the conversation. He could smell the political bullshit a mile away. Before Ardmore could answer, he continued, “What’s the point of colonizing this moon for the sake of humanity’s survival if we plan to punish future generations, the generations to carry on mankind, for where they’re born?”
“Pandora isn’t exactly colonized yet, is it?” Ardmore asked with a dangerous tone, “The politics of Earth don’t extend to our prospering little colony yet. I seem to recall your genetic predecessor enacting martial law under his authority against RDA orders that resulted in his death. But you’re not that man. Right, Colonel Quaritch?”
Quaritch had never felt such a mix of restraint and frustration like this before. Nor this primal desire to tear someone’s head off. Ardmore had quoted what he said to Spider in the cell. Of course she’d watched it. She was probably observing their interaction in real time when it happened. So, what? It was the Miles Quaritch’s fault his son was treated like a native and not a human being? The politics were bullshit and they both knew it. It was just a loophole to let them fully expend Spider’s usefulness when he fought so hard to say nothing.
“No, ma’am.” Quaritch said through gritted teeth., “Should I assume it was under your authority this was approved?”
Ardmore appraised Quaritch carefully before answering with specific terminology, “With medical guidance. Until Pandora and its inhabitants are pacified, we aren’t responsible for their welfare. Mankind’s future, colonel, is priority.”
Everything was dripping red in Quaritch’s vision and how he wished it was Ardmore’s blood off his hands. He mentally sucker punched himself. Where was this unbridled rage coming from? Why didn’t he feel this same amount of drive to take out this anger on the Na’vi? If his genetic predecessor had been successful, none of this would have happened. Including Spider’s upbringing and current horrendous condition. That logic made it seem like it was his fault somehow...
“Colonel.” Ardmore said for a second time if he had to guess by her sterner tone, “You’re needed in the med bay.”
The general’s eyes had dropped down to her computer screen somewhere in the time the colonel had frozen in his thoughts. Med bay? Shit...it had to be the kid. Quaritch managed to salute respectfully before leaving Ardmore’s office when he’d rather have left with a different hand signal.
“Talk to me, Lyle.” Quaritch said as he pressed his fingers to his throat comm and sped his way back towards the infirmary.
“It’s not good, boss.” Wainfleet said back into Quaritch’s earpiece.
Quaritch didn’t need any more motivation to pick up the pace and turn a ten-minute walk into less than five. He burst back into the infirmary’s waiting area and didn't even ask before Ja pointed him towards a hall with the sign “ICU RECOVERY”. His medic had a disturbed look on his face and followed his commanding officer without a word. Outside a room at the end of the row of doors, Quaritch saw Wainfleet pacing.
“Wainfleet.” Quaritch said firmly. Wainfleet quickly strode forward to meet them, holding up his hands to stop the colonel from busting into the room. “Stand down, corporal.”
“Sir, before you go in, something’s still off with that kid...” Wainfleet warned in the most cautious way possible.
“Spider’s awake?” Quaritch inquired, a bit of relief coming to him that the boy woke up of his own accord.
“Yea...and when they called him that, he went fucking crazy.” the corporal sighed. There was no way to avoid the truth. Spider was just as violent and unpredictable as he was before he passed out in the forest. “He attacked the orderly who said it and I had to pry him off the guy.”
“Jesus Christ...” Quaritch said, tightly pinching the bridge of his nose. He knew if Spider was violent, he would be locked away for good. Or put down. He couldn't protect him if he was a threat.
“He’s in a four-point restraint at the moment.” Wainfleet informed quietly. He and Ja had to do most of the wrangling.  The second-in-command already felt guilty for the bruises he'd left on the kid just by holding him down. The colonel’s ears went back and pulled his hand down to reveal an exasperated expression. “Seems to be holding. He’s, uh, a strong kid. They wanted to sedate him, but I said to wait for your order on that, sir.”
Quaritch scrubbed a hand down his face and nodded. He had to pull it together. He was still seething from his conversation with Ardmore, which was not finished by any means, but had to be composed if he was to face...whoever it was from the forest.
“Appreciated, Lyle.” Quaritch said quietly.
“You want me to go in too?” Wainfleet asked, ready to support his friend in this obviously confusing situation.
“Nah...” he replied with a shake of his head. He appreciated the loyalty of his oldest friend from two lifetimes but whatever was going on with Spider had to be handled slowly. Quaritch had the personality traits of his predecessor; he had to see just how violent the boy could be when left unopposed. Maybe his recom self would still be sleeping while the human Quaritch was still in charge if he’d faced some opposition.
Quaritch squared himself up and entered the recovery room. It was...a disaster. His eyes automatically faced the floor when he ducked under the door frame. As his eyes roved up, he saw blankets and pillows thrown on the floor and a broken chair against the wall. The smell of iron and bleach assaulted the recom’s already sensitive senses. IVs and monitor leads were scattered around and splatters of blood decorated on the white linoleum floor. He didn’t know whose blood it was yet...
A low, eerily guttural chuckle drew Quaritch’s eyes up to the bed. There was Spider, bound to the bed by his wrists and ankles. It looked like the staff may have tried to put cross body restraints across him but based on the blood surrounding his mouth, someone may have been on the receiving end of gnashing teeth.
The boy was terrifying to look at. Quaritch had seen how he acted when he was first taken into custody by the RDA. Snarling and cursing. Hissing and switching between languages. Honestly, it didn’t bother him. At least not like this. The way he acted in the cell was no different than the mannerisms he was used to from the Na’vi. It was more disappointing than anything.
But the boy...this version of the boy was something else. He had a grin on his face that couldn’t be described as anything less than maniacal and furrowed his brows like a madman as he glared at the person who dared enter his room. Spider’s inner right elbow was bleeding from where an IV was ripped out, slow drops to the floor accompanied the annoying alarm coming from the heart monitor. He chuckled again, licking the blood off his upper teeth.
Quaritch steeled himself, despite the difficulty of even finding his voice, before asking clearly, “Miles?”
Spider smirked as his tilted his head and raised a single eyebrow, “...were you expecting someone else?”

I’ll always be there for you
Tumblr media
Credits: @bluekernal / @quaritchsgirl
Pairing: Avatar!Miles Quaritch & Kid!Miles Socorro
Summary: In the midst of their celebration because of their mission's successful outcome, Miles Quaritch's son suddenly wakes up from a nightmare. In an effort to comfort him, the colonel takes him outside the unit. By doing this, the man also begins to reflect on his prior life as a human, but more crucially, he begins to think about Paz.
Notes: Please take a moment to read this. Check out @bluekernal/ @quaritchsgirl ’s blog because she created this AU, and let me tell you, her artwork is incredible.

Little Miles awoke suddenly, his heart racing under his ribs like a scared bird thrashing against the bars of its cage. Even though the bedroom was completely dark, he could not shake the impression that he was not alone there. Unconsciously, he extended an arm to wake his father but instead discovered cold, empty sheets where Quaritch should have been.
Why wasn't his father here if he had just returned from his mission?
The child drew himself into a crouched position and made an effort to calm himself. He made an attempt to stop thinking about the nightmare he had just had, but it was useless.
He desperately tried to open the closed door by pounding on it. Regardless of who or what had locked him in, the handle had been removed. Every fiber of his being was on fire, and he could hear footsteps coming from behind him. Little Miles turned to look behind him as the sound of the creature's footsteps grew louder. As the door unexpectedly opened as he was turning back towards it, he didn't hesitate to run into the darkness.
His leg was grabbed by something soft, tripping him as hard, cruel fingers tightened around his ankle. Despite his desperate efforts, the hand tightened its hold till he could feel its fingernails piercing his flesh.
Now that he was helplessly pinned to the ground, the monster was standing above him. The creature's face was still hidden in the shadows, making it impossible for him to distinguish any of its features even if there was a low light in that room.
Tumblr media
The squad was laughing as they told Z-Dog some stories from their most recent mission. She was unable to accompany them because of the injury she sustained during last week's training, but in all honesty, Quartich felt more at ease because his son stayed with her. Although he trusted his soldier more than the nurses, he still worried about how little Miles was doing.
The colonel's ears perked up just as Lyle reached over to grab a few beer cans. Everyone stopped what they were doing when they realized someone was crying.
Quaritch hastily left his team and headed to his room as his blood ran cold. His son's sobbing face greeted him when he opened the door. “Miles? What's the matter, bud?”
When his four-year-old turned to face his father, Quaritch eagerly embraced the child. Miles started crying harder, his body trembling from the power of his sobs as he buried his face in the colonel's neck. He gave the youngster a light tap on the back before starting to rhythmically and slowly stroke the boy's hair while whispering in his ear. "Buddy, unless you tell me what's wrong, I can't help you."
Z-dog had been attempting to calm Miles down every night because he had been having this nightmare for over a week, but the boy couldn't deny that he felt safer in his father's arms. The youngster cried out, "I had that nightmare again!” as he shuddured frantically in his father’s arms he continued. “And the creature almost got me this time.”
Quaritch began to rub calming circles into his son's back as best he could after kissing the boy’s unruly hair. “Easy tiger” he cooned “It was just a nightmare, that’s all. You know that I’m always here for you and I won’t let anything bad happen to you.”
Little Miles’s sobs subsided slightly at his father’s words and then sniffed loudly. The boy hadn't been waking up sobbing since he was practically a baby, and that worried the soldier as he gently rocked them into place.
He started to recall Miles as a young baby who had not yet learned to speak. The concept of falling asleep quickly anymore didn't occur to the colonel because his son had been wailing nearly every night at that time. Whenever the boy was crying, he was within seconds near the crib, gently picking him up and cradling him in his arms.
He didn’t want to wake up Paz back then, because she was exhausted most of the time after she gave birth, so he thought that at least he could do this to help her.
“Shh, it’s okay Miles. I’m here.” Slowly Quaritch rocked and bounced his son, hoping the cries would cease long enough to bring him back down to one of the kitchens to give him a bottle. With no such luck, he rushed down, before he woke up the entire unit, but most importantly Paz.
"These past two weeks, you've been very fussy. What's wrong, little guy?” the colonel asked as he struggled with the late-night feeding.
A few months ago, Quaritch could not have imagined himself sitting in the dark while talking with such a young child. He questioned whether it was stupid to talk to someone who was unable to even speak or sit by himself.
"You don't even realize how much is going on around you." The kid finally gave in to the bottle, softly whining as he drank. Quaritch never grew tired of the sound of his soft little voice or the sensation of his tiny hands in his.
“There you are tiger” he couldn’t help but smile “You’re feeling better, aren’t you? There’s no need to wake up your mother.”
The infant's eyes opened, looking at the bottle in front of him first before turning to face his father. Miles had every reason to believe that he would be able to put his son to sleep once more, but he abruptly stopped eating and started to wail again.
The colonel made a few more futile attempts to get the bottle in his son's mouth before giving up and bringing him to his shoulder. After rubbing and patting the boy's back for a few minutes to get him to rest, he once more cradled the boy in his arms, and the struggle started all over again.
This time, Little Miles finished the bottle, and the colonel began to rock him gently so that he could put him back to sleep. He never imagined becoming a father, but here he was. On a different planet with his family if he dared to say so. He was so terrified that he would lose everything if he simply closed his eyes. There was no point in lying because he enjoyed being a father and loved being with Paz. Although they didn't actually discuss their relationship all that much, his son would not have been born if they hadn't loved eachother.
Although his father was still deep in thought, the boy kept looking up at Quaritch and clenched his little fist around his nightshirt. He certainly helped in caring for the child, but naturally, most of the responsibility fell on her. And she did it cheerfully and wholeheartedly. Yet occasionally, tiredness overcame Paz, and the colonel felt so helpless because he felt like he couldn’t to that much to help her. The least he could was let her rest over the night.
He noticed that his son's eyes were beginning to close when he turned back to face him, so he decided to return Miles to his crib. The infant was awakened by being taken away from his father's warmth and began to cry once more.
As Quaritch lowered his hand into the crib and stroked the baby's delicate hairs, he once more attempted to soothe the young boy. He calmed down for a brief period, but when his father lifted his hand, he became agitated once more. The soldier picked up him once more, and he immediately became calm.
“You simply don't want to be alone, is that it?” Miles questioned as soon as he noticed the infant closing his hands and opening them in a demand-like manner. After giving his son a moment of puzzled attention, the infant suddenly raised his hands, and Quaritch allowed himself to softly tap their forehands as the young child clutched his father's face between his small hands.
His line of thinking was interrupted when the boy cupped his father's face as the soldier leaned in with a softness that was almost heartbreaking. He couldn't help but feel a twinge in his heart when he remembered that moment all over again while holding Miles in this position once more. Since that particular evening, when the boy was just a baby, they have been doing this. It brought both of them some comfort.
It realizaton of much has changed since then hit the soldier like a brick. Everything was much simpler back then, when he was just a human… when Paz was alive. Even though the woman had passed away years ago, he still missed her. He could see her in eveything Miles did and it hurt like hell. Even if he didn’t want to admit that.
As he looked at his son again he took note that the boy was no longer crying, but tears still continued to prickle in the corners of his eyes and the soldier decided to take a chance. “Do you want to go back to sleep?”
When his father said that, the youngster quietly distanced from him and turned to stare at his small mask. Miles didn’t trust his voice right now, but luckily for him Quaritch understood what the youngster wanted and he grabbed his son's hoodie off the chair and gave it to him.
While the boy was getting ready, the soldier went to check the oxygen level in his exopack. 70% Even though he had enough and they wouldn't be gone for long, he nonetheless packed a spare canister of oxygen just in case.
Since his son was still so little and the colonel didn't want him to get hurt, he didn't usually take him outside very often, but it was obvious that Miles loved being outside. The boy loved the nature and he would examine every flower, tree, or insect he could find outside the unit whenever he had the chance. Like his mother, the youngster was utterly enthralled by this world, and he couldn't help but get a warm sensation in his chest.
“I—I’m ready” Little Miles said, and Quaritch proceeded to put the boy's mask on, ensuring that it was properly positioned. God forbid that something happened to his little boy.
“Let’s go then” The colonel took his youngster in his arms and the both left the bedroom as well as the unit, without saying anything to anyone.
Tumblr media
“I like looking at the stars.” The boy murmured somewhat shyly to his father, who smiled in response. They were in the forest now, but not that deep into it. It was about a ten minutes walk from their unit, but God it was so peaceful here. There were no buildings, no machines, there was only nature around them. This area was filled with tall grass and equally tall white flowers that were scattered all across the ground.
Large, leafless trees could be seen in the distance, and there would occasionally be a passing insect that resembled a firefly. It was quite artistically pleasing, and at night, when the moon was shining and there were bright stars scattered across the sky, it was even more so. They were lying on their backs in the grass, gazing up at luminescent stars sprinkled all across the fascinating and mesmerizing sky. Back at the unit, it was unusual to see so many in one location, but they were still lovely.
Although Pandora was a wonderful world, he occasionally missed Earth. There were rumours circulating in the unit that the fabric of life, upon which all humans depend, is still deteriorating quickly as a result of human activity. The quality of life for people and the lives of future generations will be drastically decreased if they continue to lose significant portions of the natural environment, and it appeared that no effective action was being taken. Quaritch didn’t know what was going on inside their heads, but it was very evident that they would not stop causing damage to their home. They gave up on Earth.
He also had a sneaking suspicion that they wanted to invade Pandora in order to establish it as their new homeworld. He wasn't sure how he felt about that, but again, there were only rumors. And they'd better stay rumors.
Then Quaritch looked at his hand, which was glowing in the dark, and even though he was aware that his entire body was in fact emitting a luminous light. Believe it or not, even after all those 3 years, he still thought it was amazing and strange at the same time that he had these distinct patterns of bioluminescent dots on his skin. Occasionally, the boy didn’t let his father turn on the lights in their room so that Quaritch could shine in the dark like a glow stick because apparently he looks ‘very cool’. He sometimes was too innocent for this world.
“You like it here, don’t you?” The colonel questioned as he rolled over into a sitting position. He noticed that his son mimicked him, now also sitting straight up and he couldn’t stop himself from encircling his tail around Miles.
“Yeah” the child answered while keeping his gaze fixed on the stars “But I still can’t find the North Star.” At that his father’s ears perked up then the colonel took his son’s small hand in his own.
He began to lead the boy's hand to where he could find it and said, "First you need to discover the Big Dipper, then look for the two stars on the end of the Dipper's 'cup' and they point to where the North Star is” His son cocked his head slightly before breaking into a broad smile. “I see it now.” Quaritch chuckled a little as he continued to look at the sky.
He released his son’s hand and they both remained silent for a while but the colonel broke the silence by saying, "You know your mother's up there too." The boy's attention was drawn when the man's voice cracked a little at that comment. There weren't many videos of Paz, and the only framed picture of her that Quaritch had was on the table in his room. Even though he didn't want to admit it, especially to himself, is that he missed her every day.
No matter how many times he watched those videos with her, the soldier felt as though he was forgetting her. He knew what she looked like, but it seemed as though he was beginning to forget her features as time went on. Even though it greatly upset him, he could still perceive similarities between the youngster and his mother.
“Dad..do you think that she is watching over us right now?” As Little Miles inquired, the colonel was completely unaware when he began to tear up.
He replied after sniffing "Most definitely," the boy stared bewildered at his father, because he knew that his dad didn’t usually cry "After giving birth to you, your mom actually couldn't sleep more than two hours," Despite his trembling voice, he continued, "Every night she would jump out of her bed and would always hurry to your side to make sure you were okay."
"I wish I remembered her," his son confessed and Quaritch had a bittersweet taste on his tongue. Miles was unable to recall his mother due to his failures as a commander and, most significantly, as a lover. There was nothing he could do about that now, but he would always blame himself for his son growing up without a mother.
Once more, silence fell upon them, but this time it was broken by the kid. “Can we go home?” He asked as he yawned slightly and his father nodded. Quaritch took him in his arms and held him close as he began to walk towards the exit of the forest. Then Miles encircled his father's neck with his arms as he let his head fall on top of his shoulder. I will always protect you little one.
Though neither of them appeared to be aware of the pair of yellow eyes, watching them through the leaves of a tree as they emerged from the woods.

Paz lived but was sent back to earth au
Jake sent Paz back and kept spider with the intent of sending spider back when he was old enough. Ardmore wanted any marines,or pilots, which both were unlikely, who survived the first fight brought back to Pandora and Paz was brought back. The story starts when Ardmore is meeting the ones from the first war.
Paz waited annoyed, she was here to find her Nino, not meet some CEO assholes, and bitch's, She wouldn't listen to them anymore than she had Miles.... Miles, the man she loved... Still did even after 15 years of him being gone.. she still held on,she didn't even know why. She tried to date again after 5 years, but she always ended up comparing it to what she and Miles had had... She missed him so badly it hurt. Age and life had worn down the energetic, always ready to party smartass Latina everyone on Pandora had come to know... honestly? she got compared to Quaritch a lot,by the humans who'd been in charge when he was a new marine. Older, worn down and war hardened. She was still a smartass but not as jokingly childish as she had been before. But after taking two Na'vi arrows to the chest, and her ship getting shot down? No one knew, not even the doctors,How she had survived. Hell she herself didn't even know. Ardmore came walking up with her arms by her side,That was a surprise, she'd expected suits, not a military leader but years of experience and such her reaction was as instant as the others who'd come back with her. They all shot up ramrod straight with their hands up in salute. Except Paz,she just stood straighter. Ardmore looked at them all one by one but Paz caught her attention, she was younger than most, late thirties at least.
"Im General Ardmore. I was the one who offered your second tour on Pandora. Your all here because your experienced and can train humans and tell them what you know better than they do " The General introduced herself
"General Ardmore" an older guy said "Only one of us here has on hands on war with the Na'vi experience."
"Who would that be then?" Ardmore said looking at all the guys
"Lieutenant Passella Marie Socorro. First class Scorpion gunship pilot. Took two Na'vi arrows to her chest and had her ship shot down and survived" The older guy introduced Paz to the General.
"You can call me Paz. I hate being called Passella" She said arms crossed.
"Come on,Boss" Groaned Fike "We've all been stressed for months. a party's just what we all need " Quaritch rolled his eyes l,he'd been listening to their reasons to come for hours now. some science puke was throwing a party for humans, Avatars and, apparently,Recoms alike. He didn't see the point in it. He left Fike to complain by going to his room and laying down,he just stares at the top drawer of a small dresser by the bed.... His memories made the smallest things hurt. Like cooking or watching TV. His human selfs memories made it hurt like hell. Like his heart was cracked... or just not fully there... it wouldn't ever be again either. First thing he did after getting used to this body for an hour or two,was go and ask about her and the kid. He was told that Lieutenant Passella Marie Socorro was Killed in Action. And that no one had any idea what became of their son... the little baby boy that would cling to his hand or dog tags when he had to leave, the little baby boy who cried if someone other than him or his Mama held him for longer than a 30 seconds. He missed that,he missed them so badly but... Jake Sully would die,he caused the war that made him lose the only things he ever had to fight for. He didn't care about Sully's wife, she could live or die,but Jake Sully would pay for it.
"Fine,we can go" He announced to the squad who all cheered loudly.
Paz was leaning against the bar with her eyes closed, this was a little annoying. She used to love parties, but she couldn't love them anymore, not without Miles making it fun with her. She sighed and drained her bottle of whiskey, she still had a waaaaaaaaays to go before she was as fucked up as she wished she was.
"Hey girl where's the party loving Latina I remember" a doctor,Molly, she'd made friends with in the hospital asked smiling
Paz gave her a look.
"Okay, okay yeah I know. Your only her for your son. Did you hear anything about him....?" Molly asked
Paz stares at the ground. she's asked and asked. no one knew what had came to be of her precious little mini Miles. Many thought he was dead, not that they said this to her,out of fear of the woman
"No. I asked. He's supposedly still alive and with the traitor science pukes but..."Paz stopped and finished in a whisper "Sometimes I wonder what'll happen if my baby isn't alive anymore and I'm just up here waiting for him,.... when he'll never come" She shook her head and turned to leave when Molly went to dance
"Hurry up or we're gonna miss it, Colonel" Lyle called out in front of him running to were this... Party was at. nothing but a bunch of dumb kids making fools of themselves. If anything,it was gonna be a first class shit show the next day for'em. Getting up and goin bout with a hangover from hell wouldn't no fun, personal experience speaking. Sides,he was only goin for his squad and to make sure Mansk didn't have ta play babysitter for 10 drunk recoms, toddlers in adult bodies when they weren't on the battle field anyhow. He lost the squad walking as slow as possible,so used to it,e ignored what his tail was doing till someone grabbed and and smacked it. He turned on the human stupid enough or drunk enough to do it and started to growl "The fuck do yo-"
Paz got smacked by some new giant ass avatar, recom whatever the fuck they were's tail. She grabbed their tail and smacked it away turning as Snarling "Watch where your fuckin go-"
Both froze... a moment passed... then two...then three and more...
Quaritch stared. His voice caught in his throat,this.... it wasn't... couldn't. He kneeled down on one knee and reaching out to touch her face... making sure he wasn't dreaming.. and she was really here. "Paz... "
She stared as the minutes passed... she was dreaming right? She had to be dreaming but when he kneeled and touched her face, her hand shoot up and held the back of his hand... she was touching him.. It was real... She reached up with her free hand and touched his cheek tracing her fingers where his scar used to be. He froze and caught her arm by the elbow, gently and looked at her arm with a strange look, his ears twitching like he heard something. She didn't know what it was about before she realized,he was hearing her arm
"It's cybernetic" Paz said lightly "My scorpion crashed after I got shot down.. I got a cybernetic arm to replace the one I lost in the crash"
"It's cybernetic" was all he heard before his mind blanked out until "Shot Down" hit his ears he looked at her,she was wearing a tank top and shorts.. he didn't see any puncture scars from arrows on her... until she subconsciously moved the fabric of her shirt over her chest out of the way... To puncture scars were there... branding her body... Never had he wanted to tear Sully's throat out so badly than at this moment. That bastard caused the war... caused THIS to happen to Paz... Sully would die if it was the last thing he did
"They forgot your scar" Paz found herself saying before she thought about it. It snapped him out of the little state he was in and he looked at her,the smirk she loved so appeared on his face "Can't forget something ya have ta earn,Sugar" He felt his lips quirk. "Miles" She whispered
"Paz" Quaritch whispered and before he could stop himself,he leans down and forward kissing her. Paz kisses back without a second thought,.. oh how she'd missed this . Quaritch wrapped his large arms around her,God his memories didn't do the real thing justice. They kissed for what felt like hours.. They pulled back Paz's eyes were wet with tears,of happiness and love.
"Id say we could go back to my barrack... but.. I don't think you'd fit" She said playfully
"You don't need ta beat round,Mama. Let's go" Quaritch smiles, standing up and Paz follows him to his bedroom,it was just as bleak as it was when he was Human. He sat on the bed a smirked a little watching Paz struggle to get up there. Paz glares at him but gets up there none the less. Quaritch wraps his arms around her and lays back,Paz smiles and snuggles closer to him. "I've missed you so much,Mi Amor" Pa whispered
"Fifteen years is a long time ain't it" He whispered back not loosening his hold on her much smaller body.
He rolled over and let Paz lay her head on his arm and trace the glowing freckles on his face. Eventually, her eyes started to close and she pulled herself directly against his chest and he held her. Quaritch pulled the comforter up and over them whispering the words "I'll never let anything hurt you this badly ever again Paz. I'll die before I lose you again"
Wow this was long. I'm sorry it's taken so long and how long it is. It's been in my head since my "IF PAZ LIVED AU" post. I have other stuff in my drafts but this was what I chose since so many people voted Paz and Quaritch in the poll

Friendly Fire - Chapter One: Wild Animals
Ellie Thibodeaux holds arguably the worst job in Bridgehead City. She’s not a cook. She’s not even a cleaner. She’s the resident RDA psychiatrist, and her next assignment is helping the formerly deceased Project Phoenix come to terms with being brought back to life as an entirely different species.
Enter Colonel Miles Quaritch, the most reluctant, and most challenging patient she’s ever had the displeasure of treating.

Recombinant Quaritch x ofc (currently professional/platonic, enemies/annoyances to friends, could be more) & Quaritch x Paz Socorro

Prologue | Chapter 2
Wild Animals
“Take a seat-“ Sir?
No, screw that, Colonel Quaritch wasn’t her commanding officer.
”-…over there.” Ellie gestured at the comically large armchair placed opposite her own human-sized one.
She stifled a nervous giggle. Strange to be the one giving the orders for a change.
Just make sure these recom soldiers are of relatively sound mind. Flag any issues. That’s your only job.
Ellie understood why her role existed. The big bosses of the RDA were more than a little twitchy at any mention of recombinants after the actions of Jake Sully, Na’vi sympathiser. It could not happen again.
The destruction of the Omatikaya Hometree sixteen years prior had been a colossal waste of money and lives. Ardmore called the shots now, and was determined to do things differently this time around. She figured cheaper and easier to employ a psychiatrist, than be doomed to repeat history. Video diaries alone weren’t going to cut it anymore.
It might be Ellie’s only job, but it was one Hell of a job. She was the one holding the metaphorical scales judging the outcome of Project Phoenix.
She ran through her usual welcome-to-the-session spiel as she sat down to face Quaritch, adjusting her visor under her chin.
That was another thing. Neither of them could breathe the other’s air.
A power move for sure, since she was the one currently speaking through an exopack, the rubber seal itching her face terribly.
Compromise. It had to happen.
Part of her didn’t think Quaritch would even deign to show up. But Ardmore had reassured Ellie that he took his schedule very seriously. And if the Colonel was one thing, it was punctual.
But why would any of the recombinant soldiers bother with a shrink in the first place?
The General had promised certain motivations for those who regularly attended their appointments with Tibbs, M.D. Things that were hard to come by. Items that made living on an alien planet, and in a new alien form, a little more bearable.
Zdinarsik had a penchant for pink bubblegum. Sure thing. Mansk had a quite frankly embarrassing collection of expensive sunglasses. Forget about it, done. Fike and Wainfleet, Ellie wasn’t privy to their wants, but she had a feeling they were of the adult reading material variety.
Still only human, even in a non-human body.
Quaritch, well, Ellie wasn’t sure what he liked yet.
Did he like anything?
Judging by the look on his face, he certainly didn’t like her.
Goddamn it, initiating conversation with these blue giants never got any easier. They were all just so intimidating.
Ellie cleared her throat and tried to look ill-at-ease as she took the first step.
“So, what would you like to talk about today?”
No response.
Well, that was rude.
She tried for more casual, conversational. “How’s Project Phoenix treating you so far?”
Still nothing. Maybe an expletive muttered under his breath as he stared her down.
Oh great, he was going to be one of those.
”Whatever, it’s your hour.” Ellie shrugged. “I get paid the same whether you talk or not.”
They sat in claustrophobic silence for over forty-five minutes, the Colonel clearly going to the place deep in his mind where he could feel no pain, and Ellie wishing she could do the same.
Towards the end, when it was apparent he wasn’t going to give her anything at all, she started writing on her notepad, scrambling for something she could type up later that was incrementally more interesting than the colour of the walls or what the weather was doing.
The incessant scratching of pen on paper was what finally got the Colonel to speak up.
”What you scribbling there?” His cat-like ears flicked back in irritation. “You sketching my portrait or something?”
“Hm?” She glanced up, startled by the sound of his voice. “Oh, it’s just notes.”
”I ain’t done anything.”
”You haven’t said anything.” Ellie tapped her pen against her notepad. “I wouldn't write down specifics we discussed, doctor-patient confidentiality rules. But I can still write about your overall demeanour, how stressed you appear…unwillingness to co-operate. That’s the sort of thing I report back to the General.”
“Got it all figured out, doncha?” His sardonic reply made her stomach drop. “I don’t have to tell you anything, shrink-wrap.”
”No, but you may as well get something out of our session.” She replied, exasperation threatening her tone. “We can talk about literally anything.”
“Anything?” He suddenly leaned forward, fixing her with eye contact so intense she found it hard to hold his gaze. “Stays in this room?”
Ellie tried not to let her excitement show as she nodded agreement. Less than an hour and she was already wearing him down, a notoriously difficult customer. Who said the Colonel was hard to break?
“Alright.” He settled back in his oversized chair with a smirk. “Why don’t you tell me, about how that arm of yours ain’t real?”
Ellie couldn’t catch the shocked widening of her eyelids fast enough. ”Excuse me?”
She fought the instinctual twitch of reaching down to tug at her sleeve with her remaining hand. A nervous gesture, to cover herself.
But he was right on the money. Ellie Thibodeaux only had one arm.
Still a very sore subject. Power moves, indeed.
She could only gawp at him stupidly, speechless.
”I’ve seen my fair share of busted limbs.” Quaritch drawled. “I know a prosthetic, and a bad one at that, when I see one, even with your clothes on.”
Ellie meanwhile, was just staring back in horror.
“What got you? Landmine, congenital defect?” He quirked an eyebrow at her discomfort. “Wild animal?”
“That’s none of your concern.” To her annoyance, she sounded upset when she finally spoke. Ellie’s voice shook as she croaked out her words.
Crap, audible weakness.
With her exopack on, she couldn’t take a sip of water to break the tension. She couldn’t do anything except fog up the inside of her visor with how her breathing had quickened.
“I’m gonna go with the latter. The hand that still moves just strangled your pen to death.” Quaritch nodded knowingly, visibly pleased with his own intellect. “Guess you just didn’t run fast enough, back on Earth, huh?”
“Maybe I’m still running.” Ellie muttered. She blinked after the words hung in the atmosphere between them.
Why’d I say that?
“Are you, now?” He finally looked somewhat interested in her. “What are you running from, shrink?”
The datapad on the table to her right started beeping insistently. Ellie‘s end-of-session alarm was sounding, an entire hour had finally passed.
Thank Christ for that.
She forced an angelic smile, beyond relieved.
”Sorry, Colonel. That’s all the time we have for today.”
“Hm.” He nodded, already standing to leave. ”Was just getting good.”
”Will you be attending our next session?” Ellie asked, unable to keep the hostility out of her voice. She was hoping for a firm no. Fine, let Ardmore deal with him.
Her professional facade had well and truly slipped. Quaritch had successfully rattled her.
”I might.” He didn’t even look back. “See you around, shrink-wrap.”
Oh God. She would see him around, no doubt. Bridgehead City was big, but not big enough. The entire planet of Pandora was no longer big enough for her liking.
Ellie exhaled and slumped down in her chair, exhausted. “Shit.”
That could have gone better.
He’d told her nothing, and gotten uncomfortably close to her heart in record time, homing in on her missing arm as easily as an enemy target.
Who’s breaking who, then?
Obviously, he wasn’t Colonel for no reason. She knew that now.
Ellie was already dreading his second session more than she ever thought possible.

Paz lives modern au part 4
part 1 part 2 part 3
The Quaritch-Socorro household has money. They are firmly upper middle class. You wouldn’t know it though from how the family looks and acts.
They are cheap asses. Not like extreme cheapskate levels of penny pinching but if they can save a buck they will.
Clothes from Goodwill with a few holes that Paz can easily patch up? Hell yeah she got three bags of “new” clothes for her family for $7!
Miles is taking his family for a “fancy” night out? They’re going to the all you can eat Chinese buffet in the Walmart strip mall. Adults eat for $10, kids $6.
If you think Paz is disappointed that this is what her husband considers fancy then think again. For her this is the lap of luxury
They don’t leave until everyone’s had at least three plates because the kids grow like weeds and “mama and papa are getting our money’s worth”
Miles goes hunting with his squad mates and loads up their deep freezer with deer meat.
Paz gardens not as a hobby but because growing food yourself is cheaper than buying it.
She cuts everyone’s hair too, including her own because “why the hell would I pay for that. I can cut a straight line.” (She’s completely unaware that her own curly hair would look like a hack job if she ever straightened it out. Luckily curly hair can hide a lot of mistakes)
Miles has her cut his at the end of every month like clockwork but one time they skipped it.
One of their kids had been born a few days earlier so Miles just let it go for the first time in years.
He was on leave too and helping his wife manage the household so what did he care.
He grew a beard during that time too and Paz was shook.
She didn’t even know her man could look that good, with his curls starting to come in and his mountain man beard.
She pouted for days when Miles went back to work and had to be all “clean cut” again.
We all already know that Spider likes to keep his hair long.
His mom doesn’t care but his dad isn’t a fan.
He blames his wife for it.
When Spider was a toddler, with his long blond curls, he started getting mistaken for a girl
Miles didn’t like that so he started insisting that his wife cut it.
Paz couldn’t bring herself to do it though. Spider’s curls were so pretty. Just like her’s and Miles’ if he’d ever let it grow out just a little.
“It’s not like it won’t grow back”
“Yeah but it’s baby’s first haircut”
“So what! We’re having another baby right now.”
“But he’s my first baby!”
Miles eventually convinces her and they get all set up in the kitchen only for Paz to not be able to go through with it.
She was five months pregnant and overly emotional so can you blame her.
Miles rolled his eyes, took the scissors and just started cutting away himself
Spider was completely unbothered until mama started crying
“He looks like a little man!” Miles just ignored her
But then Spider started crying because mama was crying, which made papa get frustrated, which made them both cry harder.
Miles told Paz to just leave, which she did because she could see how she was affecting her son.
But that only made things even worse because Spider screamed for his mama, trying to wiggle out of his seat, making grabby hands in the direction she’d gone.
Until Spider was five getting his haircut would result in a tantrum.
“It’s because you traumatized him,” Miles would half jokingly half seriously tell Paz. She’d just roll her eyes because yeah he was right but it’s not like she was going to admit that.
No matter how old Spider got he just didn’t like getting his haircut for some reason. He wasn’t sure why. He just liked it long.
To Miles' chagrin his other sons emulated their big brother.
So he’s this gruff clean cut military man, with a wife who despite being ex-military herself wears her curly hair long and wild, dressing like a hippy (loose flowy, comfortable clothes, in fun colors because she had to wear neutrals for too long in the military) his oldest son dresses similarly to his mom, but more skater style. When he gets a little older he starts doing his hair in impressively elaborate braids. Spider's younger brothers more or less copy his style (they also don’t have much of a choice because they get Spider’s hand me downs) and his little sister is mommy and daddy’s little princess and dresses kinda like a nature fairy, all flower patterns, pinks, greens, blues and glitter. So much glitter.
All this to say Miles looks boring while his family looks kinda excentrique.
Some of Miles' work colleagues have caught him out and about with his family a couple of times and if they weren’t scared shitless of the man then they’d probably roast him for having such a “sloppy looking” family.
Miles has more or less made his piece with it though. He might tisk disapprovingly at one of his children's styling choices every once in a while when he’s in a bad mood but after four kids you learn to be less of a control freak
Paz and Miles are low key doomsday preppers
It’s not that they believe the world is actually going to end in some biblical plague or something.
They are just extremely prepared for natural disasters (and terrorist attacks, or World War III)
There basement is loaded with enough food rations and bottled water to keep the entire family going for about twenty years give or take
They run preparedness drills for every scenario they can think of once every three months
The kids hate it
Mom and Dad even ran one while Spider was in school, picking up the ten year old in the middle of the day and taking the entire family on a “camping trip” to a cabin in the woods six hours away
When he was twelve his dad told him that was practice for what they’d do if there was a nuclear attack on major cities.
When Spider was four and really started climbing on things Miles took it upon himself to build his son a “jungle gym” in the backyard
It was really a baby version of an American ninja warrior obstacle course.
Low key Miles was doing military training on his son but Spider fucking loved that obstacle course so it was really a win win.
Miles has a lot of way of “low key” instilling his kids with a military mindset and physical prowess
As a punishment he’ll make the kids do things like fifty push-ups or ten laps around the house
Both parents run the house on a fairly strict schedule, breakfast at 7, dinner at 6, then all the kids do their homework, twenty minutes of the kids cleaning up after themselves, then it’s off to bed.
On the weekends Miles and Paz teach their kids “practical skills” which are really just survivalist skills
During the summer the kids go to “wilderness camp”
Which is really just a rotating cast of their parents' old squad mates taking them into the woods and showing them stuff.
Miles joins in on the weekends or if he can take the days off to teach his kids things like hunting, tracking, fishing all that jazz
Needless to say the Quaritch-Socorro kids are kinda scary because of this.
When Spider was like seven he told a classmate in detail how to shoot and skin a squirrel with a sunny smile on his face. As if he was talking about a cool dinosaur fact or something
The kid cried, the teacher got involved, Spider was sent to the office and his parents were called.
Paz was basically like “yeah his dad taught him that. So what? It’s a good skill to have.”
When dad picked him up from school that day he took Spider out for ice cream as a reward for remembering everything so well.
